Dell Optiplex 745 Win10 upgrade now can't run dual monitors

Q: Dell Optiplex 745 Win10 upgrade now can't run dual monitors

Hello - we just updated our Optiplex 745 from Win7 to Win10 and we cannot get the dual monitors to work properly.
Prior to the upgrade, we were able to run dual monitors (1 primary & 1 extended screen) without a problem. We used a dual DVI splitter to make this happen.
After the Win10 upgrade we have both monitors displaying the same thing and the system settings no longer sees the second monitor in the Graphic or Display Options windows. Additionally, the VGA port is not recognized so I can't run a 1 VGA & 1 DVI combo.
Any ideas why this might be happening?

A: Dell Optiplex 745 Win10 upgrade now can't run dual monitors

Dell hasn't tested this model for compatibility with Win 10, so there might be some compatibility issues.
Did you install the latest Intel Chipsets and Intel Graphics driver for Win 10? Go to the Intel Download site and let their wizard scan your hardware for suitable drivers.
If you have an add-in video card, go to that manufacturer's site (eg, NVidia or AMD) and look for a Win 10 compatible driver for your specific video card.
And keep in mind that an add-in video card disables the onboard video ports. So make sure both monitors are connected to the add-in card, assuming you have one.

I have a brand new Dell OptiPlex 3020m. It has one VGA and one Display Port connector. All the drivers are up to date, yet it will not work with the Asus monitors I have setup.  I have one monitor connected directly though VGA with no problems. I have the other connected though a Display port to DVI adapter and that's the the one that will not connect. Tried different Display Port to DVI adapters, different DVI cables.  The monitors have no auto connect, So I had to set them manually, One is set to VGA, other is set to DVI.
Also checked the Bios for that Multi Monitor setup.  If it's in there, its ether hidden or not available.
Any thoughts, Ideas?

A:Dell OptiPlex 3020m not working with dual monitors

I have the same problem. But tried with other brand of monitors. The display port does not work.
I saw on a differente topic about 3020 model (whithout the "M") and the solution was update bios to A09 version. Then apears a Video option on Bios Setup. But the 3020m has no such option.

I tried to add a PCIe 16x video card to this machine and plugged a monitor into the card as well as the on board VGA in an effort to setup dual monitors. When I booted after that, I was given an error message after POST that said that is in incompataible configuration. I checked with Dell and they said it was too. I've done this exact thing with a PCI card on an older Dell machine and it worked instantly. Are there any work arounds or BIOS settings that I can change? The add-on card is a Dell ATI Radeon X600.

Thanks in advance.

My work PC was just reimaged (10 days later) with Windows 7. Now my onboard video card is not working but the PCI Geforce 4 MX is working as a Standard VGA Adapter. I am only seeing 1 monitor and updating the Intel Q43 display driver does not fix the issue. I went into BIOS and the Primary adapter is set for AUTO. I am going to change this to Onboard tomorrow to see if that makes a difference. Other than that I am extremely happy with Windows 7 being on my computer. It is so much faster.

Please Help!!!

I am afraid that my work is going to need to buy another video card but I am sure there is a way to get this working.

This happens with two batches of 7040s, one with hard disk drives and the other with solid state drives and two different model displays, U2414h and U2417h. The systems are running Windows7.
In each case the display flickers from time to time and, in the worst case, both monitors freeze, one with no display and the other with a few scattered white dashes on the black background. This has NOT been noticed on earlier Optiplex models from Dell. 780s, with a different display model, or 9020s with the U2414h monitors. As far as I know this occurs once or twice in a five day working week.
I have run the built in diagnostics on both the monitors and the monitors without any faults being found.
The 7040s have had the BIOS upgraded and the latest drivers applied as well as the latest Windows updates. I have scanned the event log without finding anything, although I am unsure what to look for.
Is this a known issue? Is there anything I can do to test the systems, other the built in diagnostics.

I am trying to connect an Optiplex 3040 with a 2Gb dedicated video card (AMD R5 340X is only option) to two monitors. The AMD card only has 1 x DP and 1 x DVI digital video ports, while the P2317H monitor (current "standard" business monitor) only has 1 x DP and 1 x HDMI input on it.
My question is:  when is Dell going to release a dedicated video card option that we can actually connect directly to these monitors without having to use converters/adapters etc??? This is nuts.

Hi there,
I've got an OptiPlex 3040 micro running Windows 10 64bit (came installed on the machine) and two monitors (Dell U2415, came as a pair) using extended display. One monitor has an HDMI-HDMI cable going into the computer's HDMI port, the other has a DisplayPort-DisplayPort cable going into the computer's DisplayPort port. (There is no VGA port installed on this machine)
Both monitors are on the correct setting for detecting what cable is plugged into them. Whichever monitor the DisplayPort cable is plugged into cuts out to a black screen with nothing on it multiple times an hour during normal computing (mostly email and web browsing). Not a steady flicker, just randomly goes black and randomly comes back on.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for the monitors, checked all the settings, ran the troubleshooter (no issues found), updated my graphics card driver (it was already the latest version), and nothing seems to be wrong there.
When I swapped the HDMI and DP cables to see if it was a cable issue or the physical monitor, the monitor that then had the DP cable plugged into it started to have the problem, whereas the other monitor (now plugged in via HDMI) had no problems. Originally there was a Mini DP-DP cable connecting one of the monitors and I thought maybe that was the issue, so I replaced it with a brand new DP-DP cable the other day. Still having issues with whichever monitor is connected via DP.

A:OptiPlex 3040 micro, dual monitors using HDMI and DP ports, DP connection unreliable

This does not sound like a hardware failure. Did you check/test all of the Windows 10 power management options? Specifically the PCI Express- Link State Power Management setting? Or just set the Windows 10 power management to High performance and retest. Also, if the U2415s USB upstream cables are connected to the computer, be sure to disable the USB selective suspend setting.

I started noticing about a week ago that my Optiplex 7010, when rebooted from the OS (Windows 10 Pro x64), will not complete the post process and gets stuck at the big Dell logo.  The only resolution is to power cycle it.
Today I ran the complete diag tool on it and it reported no issues.  I did notice that there was a Bios update available and downloaded it in attempts to upgrade the Bios.  However, when the Bios installer reboots the machine, the same thing happens and the installation doesn't proceed.
The only peripherals attached are the VGA monitor, a USB keyboard and mouse, and the speaker cable.  What else can I do to figure out what's causing the system to hang at the Dell logo?
PS.  I did notice however that when I enter the Bios and make a change that causes the system to reboot, that reboot is successful.  So it's almost as if the only reboots not succeeding are ones stemming from the OS.

Hello everyone! I'm new to the forums. I have a new Dell Optiplex 7040 tower and have connected two monitors to the DP video connections in the back. Yes, I have two separate DVI cables into the adapter. (Second came all the way from China).  I'm getting a signal and picture from the primary monitor but no signal from the second monitor.
I looked at the BIOS settings but saw nothing there.
I'm using Windows 7 OS.
Can someone point me to the right place or command for the desktop to "see" and second monitor?
Thanks

A:Dell Optiplex 7040 and Dual Monitor

Which form factor, mini-tower, small form or micro?
If you have an add-in video card, do you know if it supports 2 DVI monitors at the same time?
Look in BIOS setup for an "Intel Multi Display" option and Enable it. Manual doesn't show BIOS screens so I don't know if this option actually exists.
Have you gone to the Windows 7 Display settings screen and clicked the Detect button to see if it will detect the second monitor?
Keep in mind if you have an add-in video card, the onboard video ports will be automatically disabled so you can only use the ports on the add-in card (unless there's an Intel Multi Display option in BIOS).
What other ports does the PC have (on the add-in card)? Have you tried using one of those with the second monitor, assuming that monitor supports other inputs, such as VGA, HDMI or DisplayPort?

I picked up a couple Dell Optiplex 745's that are almost identical. A friend of mine has the same machine that runs Windows 7 flawlessly. I, however, can only install it and run the OS when disabling one core of my Pentium D 2.8GHz (Presler) CPU. When I go into the BIOS and re-enable the 2nd core the system becomes completely unstable.

Some basics:

x86 (32-bit)- Windows Home Premium retail (Came from Dell with XP)

System close to four years old, with format and clean install of Windows 7. Machine does run OK on Windows XP with both cores enabled. Both machines seem to perform exactly the same so bad CPU or memory seems to be a longshot.

Zip file attached. Thanks for any help!

Hi,
I read many posts about the opportunity to upgrade an Optiplex GX620 from a Pentium 4 to a pentium D. upgrading up to a D 930 or a D 960 seems good (according to the feedbacks).
Intel developed a lot of Dual Core processors. For example Pentium E 5500
When we look at the specs we can see that the socket is the same (LGA 775), and the FSB (800 mhz required) also. The voltage of the E5500 seems to match with the voltage of the D or 4 . I understand that E5500 has a smaller TDP (65 W) than a pentium D and should not give problem with heat..
My question is : can we upgrade an optiplex GX 620 from a Pentium 4 to a pentium E 5500 ? and, if it is, does it worth it?
Thanks,

A:Optiplex GX620 upgrade to dual core

Short Answer NO you cannot.
The E5500 will not work in the 620.
Bios MUST BE UPDATED Before changing CPU.

Good evening,

I work for a law firm that uses Dell Optiplex's ranging from 745's to 790's with all inbetween [745, 755, 760, 780, 790]. Our NJ satellite office also has these Dell model ranges, but all of them have Windows XP SP3 installations. These machines generally either have the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Drivers or the ATI Radeon HD 3400 series card/drivers for those models that do not have an available display port. With that said, all machines have dual monitor setups as well.

The issue, put simply: almost a 1/4 of the PC's in our NJ office lose their second monitor on almost a daily basis, where we either have to re-extend the desktop to the other monitor or we have to play the unplug/shutdown/re-plugin game with the display port adaptors.

We're about to run a report containing the following information for the affected machines: OS, BIOS, Video Chipset, Connector Type [VGA2DP, DVI2DP, DP2DP], Power Save Settings. However, I'd like to throw this forum post out there to see if anyone knows any specific Windows XP Pro SP3 issues that exist with utilizing dual monitors on these machine types and/or how to resolve them. Thanks in advance for those who can assist me with any information.

The sticks you want are 512MB PC133 non-ECC with 16 chips (8 chips on each side), don't worry about getting ECC RAM it's probably not worth it. Kingston make suitable RAM, here's a link to their page: http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/con...o.asp?root=&LinkBack=&ktcpartno=KTD-DM133/512

Hi all,
First post! Ok here goes I'll try and make this short. I recently got gently used Dell with 1 gig mem and a celly d. Runs great until I try and multi task. Slows down, no crashes but should be better. Should I try and if possible upgrade processor? If so what do I need to check (mobo, chipset etc) Other then more ram(wich I will indeed increase) is there anything else I can consider to speed this thing up a bit?

Just to clarify..
I am using xp pro.any search on anything slows this to a crawl Also I have conflicting reports, can this machine take 2 or 4 gigs of ram? What do I check to find out?
Thanks for the help by the way
by celly i meant celeron d
sorry for the confusion

A:Upgrade Dell Optiplex 320 w/celly d to?

What's a celly d?
Update the BIOS.
That computer can utilize a lot of memory. That, combined with an update of all drivers from
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...temID=PLX_PNT_320&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
and upgrading to Windows XP Professional will just about do it.
Upgrading the processor will not provide noticeable improvement unless you also upgrade the video graphics card as long as you also upgrade the power supply.

Hello I wanted to ask about a graphics card upgrade for my dell optiplex gx620.

Current specs:

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 HT 3.00Ghz
RAM: 4 GB
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS
HDD: Seagate 250 GB

I am pretty sure I can upgrade the GPU but don't know which card works the best for it. Also my Power supply is 280 watts.

Thanks and if you need more info please tell me.

A:Dell Optiplex GX620 GPU Upgrade

With the very small power supply you will be limited. Unless there is a pressing need for better graphics I would just stay with what you have. Many (most) of the Dell's in the period when the GX620 (2005 area) was made have proprietary power supplies. If you have the full desktop you "may" be able to find a higher power replacement. If this GX620 is the smaller compact case models I would forget it.

Dell only supports XP as the latest OS, although that is not the restricting hardware issue.

Sorry to be so negative, but you are very limited.

Hi Asfand_Munib,
Before installing a new processor, please update the BIOS to latest version from Here.
Note : Please save and close all running programs and documents and disconnect all external peripherals (printer, flash drives, external hard drives, etc) and connect the computer to a surge protector before updating the bios.
If all the lights are green and you are not receiving any beep codes from the system then it means that the processor has been installed correctly. Please check if the keyboard lights (Capslock, Numlock, etc) respond when you press the corresponding keys. Please verify the connections on rear of the system and check if they are connected firmly. Also, check if you are able to hear any windows jingle sounds after some time when you power on the system. Please share the exact model of Optiplex 745 you are using as it comes in 4 form factors viz Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF), Desktop (DT), Small Form Factor (SFF), and Mini-Tower (MT). Please reply with the information. Will take it further from there.

A:best processor upgrade for Dell Optiplex GX620

The GX620 doesn't support any Core processors. The chipset theoretically could do some of the low end ones, but the bios has to recognize the processor and then more or less let the motherboard adjust the voltage provided to the processor.

The best you can get is a Pentium D I believe. The first Optiplex with Core support was the 745 if memory serves.

I am wanting to bump the memory of an old Dell OptiPlex GX110. I inherited it with 256 MegRAM (2x128). I have another computer with similar memory and 256 (so I could conceivably keep one 128 & add the additional 256). However, while researching it online I ran across a note from a memory supplier similar to, "Use only our special memory". Is that hype or is there special memory in these??

Both are SDRAM- the spare 256 is Crucial Memory from an old Toshiba 98SE machine

I had a pair of 256s in one of these and PCLinuxOS runs fine in it--- I am hoping that putting the 384 of RAM to speed things up on this one.

Your thoughts would be appreciated

Regardless, I still am having a difficult time of locating a video card, mainly because most sites don't advertise the minimum PSU wattage. If someone can point me in the right direction, I'd like to have at least a 256mb video card.

For reference the card needs to be the following:

I have a question. One of my friends has a XP SP3 with Dell Precision M6500 laptop with Dual Monitors....one being the laptop and the other being a Dell standard monitor. Here is our problem. It doesn't matter if we use the nvidia driver settings or windows display settings to extend the desktop, it will seem to work in general but whenever you reboot the computer or do a undocking of the laptop and then redock it, it will sometimes lose the settings that you put into it and "forget" which monitor is which...etc.

You can always correct it again but you would have to keep doing this over and over again. My friend is a standard user in windows XP and when I try logging in as an admin, it seems to work for me but whenever we log in as his standard user, everything is forgotten again whenever he undocks or does a cold boot in most cases.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? Wrong drivers or wrong settings?...should we be managing this via the nvidia driver controls or via XP display settings display tab?....bad monitor?....etc....the laptop monitor should always be primary but it will forget that and swap them or lose settings.....again we can fix it everytime manually but we are wondering if it's a driver problem, settings problem or admin-limited user rights problem or something else...please help! Thanks

It is a Windows 7, Dell Optiplex 760.
It has 4 GB of Ram, and an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8200 2.33 Ghz
I am looking for a graphics card that I can install in this computer that will be powerful enough to allow me to play Skyrim on highest graphics settings.
Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a graphics card that would fit in my computers casing. Also I've found that some graphics cards need to to plug in with PCIE express cables.
I'm not exactly super techie so tell me if I stated something incorrectly.
But anyhow, my question is;
What is the best sff graphics card that I can get to fit this computer? And is this computer exactly sff?
I ask because it wouldn't fit a normal card, but I'm not sure if that means it's sff...

A:Dell Optiplex 760, video card upgrade = Problems

you have a dell sff (small form factor) pc....this pc was not designed to play video games
if u were to buy a decent "half height" video card that fit the dell............ then u would have to buy a more powerfull power supply to power it
then there would be airflow issues and overheating
starting to get the picture??? it is just not worth it!!!
sell the dell and lokk into buying a GAMING pc that will play your video games (sorry for the bad news)

Country:Ireland.
The power supplies in the SFF are so small and the case is soo small that there are few to none upgrades.  USFF systems have no slots whatsoever.
The 19W ASUS EAH5450 would be the ONLY one I know works.

The Silent ASUS card fits all models Except the USFF.  Optiplex Tower is a better choice because you can use much better cards.
USFF isn't upgrade-able due to no slots.

I've bought a CPU on the basis that it's compatible with the old dell optiplex SFF that I have and it works but only for several minutes. I think the strongest chance is that it's because of the need for a more powerful fan to keep the CPU temperature within recommended limits.
I've looked at some cheap options but I don't know if I need to connect to another power supply lead or anything else in order to get a fan to cool. The cheap options for doing this are on ebay for about £4 including heatsink (see: )
Can anyone comment and tell me if I can use this type of cheap athlon recommended fan and heatsink in the 740 without any problems?

Thanks,

Having just upgraded from XP using the Nvidia dual monitor desktops for years, I was surprised to find Windows 7 has this feature in-built with the added bonus of slideshow desktop images C00L!
So beyond Win7 eye candy which is better, Does it come down to games running faster under the Nvidia dual desktops, what is the general preference here?

A:Is Nvidia dual monitors a poor cousin to Windows 7 dual monitors?..

afaik, there is no real performance difference, as all stuff is handled by the nvidia driver anyway.

And of course the more monitors the higher performance hit as there is more screen surface to work on (the same as increasing resolution).

Btw, the main pityfall of the multiple monitors is that the taskbar is only in the primary monitor, but there are a ton of good third party programs that can handle this, like Actual Multiple Monitors.

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 3650 with Win10 Home installed. I didn't buy the Win10 Pro version from Dell because I had a Retail copy of Win7 Pro that I was going to install and then upgrade to Win10 Pro. What happens every time (on my third clean Win7 Pro install try now) is that my fully licensed and activated Win7 Pro machine wants to "upgrade" to Win10 Home.

This is not my first rodeo. I have upgraded many of the machines here from Win7 Pro and Ultimate to Win10 Pro without a problem. This includes Vostro 260s, Optiplex 3020s and Inspiron 3847s. This Inspiron 3650 has been a problem from day 1. I've even done a few friends Win7 Home to Win10 Home upgrades on various machines without problem. Anybody have a clue WHY this box won't upgrade to Win10 Pro?

I have just inherited a small form factor OptiPlex 990, and would like to run two monitors.
There is a standard VGA connector on the Back Panel, and a AMD OPGA8 module in one of the expansion slots.  At the moment the AMD module (I think it is a OEM Radeon 6450) is used as the main video interface.
I have installed Windows 10 and all the  Microsoft updates and everything seems to work fine but I cannot run a second monitor on the Back Panel VGA connection.
I have downloaded the Dell support article "How to Setup Multiple Monitors in Windows 10", but I just cant get the OptiPlex to communicate with the back panel VGA socket.
I would greatly appreciate any help.
Thanks

Hi! I just upgraded to Win8 this weekend and so far I really like it. I discovered something this morning that now that the weekend is over is bugging the crap out of me and I need help. I work from home and use this alot so it would be helpful.

I am trying to do a couple things I could easily do in 7,
- have Chrome open in both monitors at once with different things on them.
- currently Chrome has no minimize/maximize buttons on the upper right like it used to. Makes it very hard to multitask.

I have 2 monitors, the main is a 23" touch screen and the second is an 18" non-touch screen.

Also, is there a way to have the taskbar to appear at the bottom always like it used to?

Thanks! I really appreciate the help!

A:Windows 8 Dual Monitors, need help having browser open in both monitors

Answered my own question. Google Chrome was showing in App mode. When I downloaded Chrome for 8 there is an option to have it show in desktop mode and the taskbar, minimize/maximize, and multi window option came back. YAY.

Now if someone could tell me why windows 8 won't fill the screen at the resolution recommended for my 23" monitor I'd be good!

It used to go from one monitor to the other by dragging it from left-to-right. I can't figure out what caused it to start doing this or how to go about getting it back to the way it was before. Any ideas how to change it back. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi,

I am trying to setup three monitors on my Dell Optiplex 7010. I have the integrated graphics with thee ports (2xDisplayPort, 1xVGA) and a PCI graphics card with two ports (1xDVI, 1xDisplayPort).
The three monitors I have are 2xDVI output, 1x VGA output.
I have been using some converters to get my monitors cables to converto to DisplayPort to connect them to the display Ports on the PC.
The two DisplayPort monitors are working fine using the integrated graphics but the VGA is not. I have been told that this is because of the converters I am using.
I have tried multiple different combinations to get this to work with no luck :(.

Could anyone suggest how I could get this to work or what graphics card i would be able to buy to get this to work?

Thanks,

Boldonglen

A:Three monitors on a Del Optiplex 7010

Hi Shawn,

I have been in contact with one of your technical guys and we went through some diagnostic checks to see why I could not get both the integrated graphics and the dedicated graphics card to work. We finally found a solution. Because I am using Windows 8.1 I needed to update my BIOS using this link. Once I updated my BIOS I went into the BIOS and checked the multi-display checkbox. Once this had been done and I restarted my PC I was able to connect monitors to both the internal and dedicated graphics cards and they are all working.

Hope this helps someone out.

Glen Robson

A:how to use 2 monitors on my Optiplex GX220

I'll give this question a shot . Honestly, I've never tried a dual monitor setup with 2 video cards but I don't see why it wouldn't work (that is unless one of your cards is the onboard video on the motherboard). Let me ask this... When you have both monitors hooked up and turned on, do they both display the desktop? If yes then (if no proceed to second paragraph) you can probably just right-click on your desktop > properties > settings tab. In the pull down menu select your primary monitor (usually listed as "1.default monitor on blah blah") and check the box that says "Use this device as my primary monitor" then select the second one ("2. Default monitor on blah blah") from the pull down menu and check the box that says "extend my Windows blah blah blah", and that should do it. I think there may be compatablity issues with adapters and windows XP when trying to do multiple monitors check out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307397/EN-US/ for a list

There are dual display video cards available for really cheap. I've used a radeon 9250 in a dual monitor set up and it worked fine. The only thing you have to be aware of is that the second port is not always a standard vga port. As with the 9250, the second port is a DVI-I port and I had to get an adapter. Shop around, a lot of major stores carry this adapter for around $30-$40 however I found a generic at radio shack for $6 that worked just fine. T... Read more

I've got a new Dell Optiplex 9010 AIO. I have the built in monitor good to go, a 2nd monitor via a VGA connection flipped to landscape mode and also working fine.I've got a HDMI-DVI converter plugged into the HDMI out slot, and plugged into an external IBM monitor. My computer can see it. I can extend the desktop between monitors 1 and 3 (as seen in the image) or 1 and 2 (the IBM monitor) but not all three at once.Dell explicitly states that this computer with the onboard graphics card can support 3 displays (internal+2 external). I've rebooted, reinstalled the Intel video drivers and taken a peek into the BIOS, which didn't reveal anything.Thoughts? Ideas? I can see the 3rd monitor through win7's control panel, and through the intel display management software. Just can't use all 3 at once.

A:Optiplex 9101 All-in-one with three monitors?

Hi trollitc,
To enable triple monitors, you can connect them following either of the connections:

Direct Connections: Have direct connections to the screens via 1 x VGA to VGA monitor, 2 x DisplayPort cables to the DisplayPorts on the other capable monitors. Most do not have DisplayPorts.
Adapter Connections: 1 x VGA to VGA Monitor port, 2 x DisplayPort to DVI Active apapters.

For option 2 it is important to ensure your adapters are classified as "Active". Most adapters that you get for DisplayPort to DVI are "Passive" Active means it keeps active the root port type. Passive meas it changes it to the converted port. DisplayPort detects this and will only do dual monitors when a passive adapter is used.
Here is an example of a DisplayPort to DVI Active Adapter:
DISP PT TO DVI SGL-LINK ACTIVE CONVRT
You can also refer to this link: http://dell.to/WnGflF  It mentions that 3rd generation CPUs natively support 3 displays with the integrated CPU graphics. Three simultaneous display output requires one Display Port with a maximum resolution of 2500x1600 at 60Hz refresh rate and a Display Port and VGA port with max resolutions of 1920x1200 at 60Hz refresh rates.

Hi

New to this help forum, howdy all. (apologies up front for the long post but the details I think might help you understand are in there)

So, I recently installed a second SSD to my PC. The intent was to have a second SSD to boot win 7 from (since I have already upgraded to 10 on the first). So, I disconnected the first SSD from mobo, installed the second, booted with with Win7 install disc, went through install, used it for a day, everything dandy - powder down for the night. Next day reconnected the first SSD and booted straight into bios (motherboard program) and changed the boot order to:

dvd/cd
SSD win7
SSD win10

Then manually selected to boot into 10. Well, the boot procwess started throqing back failures and how it needed to checkdisc preemptive measures - so I let it do it's thing. Well, now whether I let it bown of it's own accord or if I tell it to boot from SSD 10/7 it always boots into win10.

As a troubleshooting measure I disconnected the win10 SSD and let it auto boot and it goes blue screen (but not screen of death) and says there is boot info missing (i don't remember exactly) and to contact your pc mfg or admin. Hooking the SSD back up it boots just fine.

So to recap, I am now booting from my second SSD (the one I loaded win7 on), the first SSD has all the files of windows on it because I can still access it and see for myself - so it's not inoperative, just won't boot itself - I just don't know which version of windows it is. When I f... Read more

Hello,

I received the free win 10 upgrade from an invitation to reserve the upgrade. The other day, a Ransomware hit me, and though I believe I may have immediately tracked & deleted all affected files I could find, I hardly believe I could be so skilled as to be successful.

I had this happen last year, and ended up formatting the unit, and reloading Win 7. I don't want to have to go back to 7, but how do I get another Win 10? Is there a key I need to find & save? A free site that I can get a copy on a flash drive to load from? Any help would be appreciated. I have no clue how to proceed since it's an online download, and once formatted, the unit won't be able to get online without the OS

When the PC starts up, the dell loading screen begins. Normally this takes around a few seconds but this time it didn't end. We've tried all the diagnostic tests and they all came back fine. Also tried disconnecting all external cables (ie headphones, ethernet etc). Powered on and off multiple times and no change.
By the way, I don't know if this is related or not, but last night before the issue occurred, I was randomly logged out. Once it logged me back in, everything was closed and there was a small square of like TV static towards the bottom right corner. I restarted and it fixed the issue there but I don't know.
Thanks in advance, Sean

Can anyone please tell me how to set up another monitor to work with my laptop computer? I've made a little progress, HOWEVER...

I would then like to open my Excel Workbook that has 2 sheets. One sheet is constant data input into various columns using my laptop. In the second sheet, I have formulas which constantly updates the data within a formatted table that I would like displayed onto the external monitor.

My project is to hook the laptop monitor into an overhead flat screen tv using HDMI cable. Then, while sitting in a corner with my laptop entering data, the results would be constantly updated for the audience to see.

Thanks...

A:dual monitors / dual programs set up

Hello dunna, welcome to Sevenforums

With a laptop, (assuming you have an HDMI port), it shouldn't be too difficult. However, laptops are different. For example, mine, you plug in the secondary monitor, and there is a function key (Fn) that you press, and the corresponding key to change the output mode (for me, it is F1). It should let you choose how you want to display to the monitor. Test it out yourself to see, but if you can't find it, let us know. It helps if you provide the laptop type, so we can tell you the keys exactly

I am not sure if I have win 8.1 pro or win 8.1Says 8.1 pro in mscinfo but doesnt allow me to install win 8.1 pro features. Anyway that is not the issue I am writing about. Issue is , I had my laptop crashed 1 month after I installed Win 10. it required HD replacement by HP, at which stage I was told not to ugrade to win 10 as my laptop will not handle it. My Question is:free upgrade to wn 10 ends soon.what happens when my OS will no longer be supported by MSWhat is actually the problem that causes HP notebooks to crash? Is there a feature in win 10 that can be turned off to avoid causing the crash?Atleast we can keep up with the updates!! Need some help to understand what the actual issue is and if there has been some workaround found by now.SD

I have a Dell Optiplex 754 computer and just bought a pentium E5700 processor. The socket type for the PC and the processor is LGA775, bios version is latest but when i put the new processor in the optiplex, the fans speed up to max and nothing appears on screen.

Can someone help me at all?

I thought it would be incompatible but according to some users of the same PC, they have quad core processors in them.

Thank you.

I have an Optiplex 790 Mini-Tower with an i5-2400 and integrated Intel HD 2000 video.
The case has both a VGA and Display Port connector, I am presently using the VGA port. I am investigating going for a Dual Monitor setup and am confused whether I can do so without having to purchase a discrete video card. I am reading conflicting reports that some say yes and others no. Can some kind soul please confirm one way or the other ?
I do not use the PC for gaming, it is work only with the occasional video and web browsing. Mainly I need dual monitor for multiple file editing, scripting, database programming etc.
Many thanks, Fin.

A:Optiplex 790 Mini-Tower Dual Monitor ?

Hi Fin,
OptiPlex 790's onboard video solution supports both VGA and DisplayPort at the same time. You can connect two monitors to the computer without adding a discrete card.
Please let me know if you need further information.

Apologies if this is 'old hat'. I'm having trouble with win 10 (getting wifi working) and have a thread specifically on that subject already open. I'm in the position of installing win10 on my son's laptop and soon have to give it to him - but he lives 80 miles away. Win10 does not work in terms of wifi on this laptop but wifi does with win 7 so how can I resolve this win10 issue when I do no have the laptop? I can remotely access the laptop so is there an option of giving him back the laptop in a dual booting mode using win7 and win10? The win10 install licence is derived from the win7 key so what would the situation be if both OSs were install of the same machine - would it work?

A:Dual Boot Win 7 and Win10

In my opinion based on my limited understanding................... your Win 10 will NOT get activated on the dual boot setup.
It is because your Win 7 is on the computer and its product key is considered " in use".
You cannot use the same key to activated another OS installation even it is installed in the same computer.

That said, I remember distinctly during the Windows Technical Preview era, I had a Win 7 Home Premium laptop which I setup a partition and installed the Preview into it. And it got activated automatically.

So, heck, I can be wrong completely.

I have a pretty hardcore laptop from work, which i am also allowed to use for private use, so I have installed an ekstra SSD disk in the laptop and i was wondering if it was possible to install win 10 on that one and then get an option when i boot the pc, which disk/os i want to start up?
Right now i have my company image of win 10 on the std harddrive and the other one is just empty, but visable (so it works).
How will i go by doing this? Its important that nothing is happening to my company drive/os. I know it is protected by bit-logger, will this make things complicated?

Thanks in advance
/Jack

I am currently running 8.1 I have a separate empty partition set for win 10 install. Currently, the free win 10 upgrade is sitting in my "updates" folder as an optional download/install.

From this point, how do I proceed to install Win 10 in partition D along side Win 8.1?

A:win10 win 8.1 dual install.

since 8.1 will be used to justify the free upgrade, it must be removed after win10 is installed.

Hello
I have recently bought an Optiplex 760 and I am trying to set dual screens up on the graphics card. Using the VGA and DVI ports on the card, both screens will work separately on the VGA port but not on the DVI port. It seems not to recognize the monitor when plugged in to this port.
the card is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 610 with 2GB it has the port I mentioned and a HDMI
any advise on how to remedy this would be grateful as I can not seem to find a solution
I have tried all the suggestions I have found up to now
I have not tried the HDMI as my screens don not have the port on them to use this connection

Thanks

A:Optiplex 760, Nvidia GeForce GT 610, VGA/DVI, dual monitor setup?

I am having the same problem with my monitors. I have 1 with vga, and 1 with DVI. The VGA works on both monitors, but the dvi does not on either. Windows recognizes the monitor attached to dvi, and allows me to extend the display, but the monitor with DVI connection says no signal, and remains black. I can even drag windows from one monitor to the next and back, but nothing appears on the monitor. The problem is not the monitor as both work just fine with the vga connection. Unfortunatly there is only 1 vga on the video card.

Hi!. I got a not so new Dell optiplex 745 with a old Intel Pentium 4 530 @3.00Ghz with 1gb of sYstem RAM, a 80gb seagate hard drive, a 305w power supply And integrated intel gma 3000 graphics, my question is, Can i replace the old Pentium 4 that is 90nm with a Pentium e5500 or a Core 2 Duo e6750 that are 45nm? also, i will buy a geforce gt430 and a 2gb dual channel ddr2 memory. does the power supply support these three components? also is this a good computer or should i buy a motherboard and install everything from the start?

A:Help With Dell Optiplex 745

Minitower Optiplex 745:
Supported microprocessor types: Intel® Pentium® 4, Pentium® D, Celeron®, or Core™ processor
DDR2 RAM should be installed in matched pairs so you'd need to install 2 of them. But there's no point installing 4 GB of RAM with a 32-bit version of Windows which can only use ~3.0 - 3.5 GB of RAM. Note, this system supports 2 GB RAM modules but only those running at 533, 667 MHz. It doesn't support 2 GB modules running at 800 MHz, but apparently will support smallar modules running at 800 MHz.

Hi guys I need some help please my dell optiplex 745 sff will not boot up just amber light at points abcd and real loud fan

A:dell optiplex 745 sff

my guess would be that this was after some kind of storm or power surge. can you see the bios loading? in order to diagnose this you will have to have parts that are known to be good and go through the machine one piece at a time. The main suspects right now is the power supply, CPU, or the mother board. Do you get any audable beeps when it is trying to start up?

I just purchased a (barely) used Optiplex 960 from my office (my employers often sell used equipment to employees if they want to get rid of it).  It's in great shape, clean, and all the hardware seems to work, except for the fan speed controller.  I know it's supposed to adjust the speed of the cooling fan depending on how hot the CPU is getting, but it's not doing that.  The fans seem to stay on low / medium speed even when the CPU is pushing 70 degrees C according to Speedfan...which is WAY too hot.  The only way I can get the fan to speed up is by disabling the auto-speed control in the BIOS and leave it on 100% constantly.
Anybody have any suggestions?  Is the temperature controller damaged, or do these systems normally run hot?  Thanks!

Hello,I purchased an Optiplex 380 a couple of years ago which came with 2x2GB RAM @ 1066Mhz and now I think time has come to upgrade to at least 8GB. So, I tried a kingston value ram of 4gb @ 1333Mhz and unfortunately it beeped with 1 and 3 diagnostic LEDs lit. I know that the Dell manual says a maximum of 4GB ram but I have seen people here on dell forums running 2x4GB without any problems, so according to my thinking, maybe the bus frequency is the problem? shall I try 1066Mhz? Crucial's site also suggests up to 1600Mhz so whats the confusion here?P.S. I have latest BIOS A07 flashed.

A:Dell Optiplex 380 max RAM

Hi,
Thank you for reaching out.
Did you try 8GB(4+4) or Does it beeps even with a 4GB stick in one slot?
Try each stick on both the slots, If that fails, you may try 1066 mhz.
P.S:  We haven't tested 8GB configuration on this motherboard from the factory, If none of the steps works, You may have to revert back to 4GB.
Thanks.

The hard disk is almost full and I wish to take it out and replace same by a 2.5" sata hard disk.
Can anyone tell me whether this is possible and if so how to go about it?
Because it's a small form factor it can only hold one hard disk.

Hi everyone,

I have been looking up about getting a replacement for my existing CPU which is an Intel Core i5 (Version: 2400) and upgrading to the new Intel Core i5 4460 which does support HD better for what I needed, such as movies and gaming (I only need up to 60FPS).

But other than that, I have been looking either at a portable GPU. The GPU is called a Zotac GeForce GTX 960 4GB (from NVidia). I just want to know if this will fit and will it work well with my PC?

I just want to know if the new Intel Core i5 4460 will fit in the Optiplex 390's motherboard, the same for the Zoatac GeForce GTX 960 4GB GPU.

But I would be interested to see what you have come up with any other CPU/GPU recommendations for this Dell Optiplex 390 Desktop.

Many thanks,

Ben

A:New CPU/GPU for Dell Optiplex 390

Because the optiplex comes in three form factors, which one is it? The Desktop ones? or the smaller one?

Anyways, to be able to upgrade to a Haswell processor you'll need a new motherboard aswell (Those with H81 chipset will do). The Zotac GTX 960 will work provided you have enough juice from the PSU to be able to supply the graphics card

I am new to this site, and I am needing some help. I am trying to erase the hard drive on a Dell Optiplex 755 with Windows XP, and reinstall factory settings. I have already reinstalled major drivers once, but the user says that this harddrive is "buggy", and since I'm suppose to be the IT guru he wants me to do a factory reset. My two questions are this. First. Is it Ctrl F11 or F12 that I hold when starting up, and where do i go from there? Secondly. Do I need anything like killdisk or paragon disk wiper pro to fully erase harddrive?

Thanks for youtr help.

This is a continuation of my earlier thread which says it is locked:

https://forums.techguy.org/threads/compaq-presario-particulars.1161610/

Alas, the unit recommended to me in that thread is sold out.

I have been looking at similar units of the same model number but, as best I can tell, although they have the same name/model, the Dell Optiplex 780 seems to come in two different case sizes, a MF and a SFF, the SFF being the smaller of the two.

The SFF seem to be the more plentiful and about $50 more expensive, while having only 1TB SATA compared to the MT having 2TB.

Am I right in thinking that there are indeed two case sizes; and, if so, which is the preferable ?

Thanks.
