I have the following notebook.

I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Proffesional x64.
I used the Asus CD to install all Asus stuff. Even the ones I don't need.

My notebook as two graphics cards. The default Intel Onboard card and the more powerful 1GB nVidia GeForce GT425M 1GB video card.
Before the upgrade (which was a clean install) when I played a game (left 4 dead2, call of duty: black ops) the notebook automatically switched from the Intel to the Nvidia graphics card. But it doesn't anymore.
I have read that my notebook used Nvidia Optimus technology to do this.
Although I can't seem to be able to solve the problem.

I turned off my notebook using the mouse and the screen menu. The computer apparently closed down as it should, the screen went black, but the light on the power switch continues to glow. When I try to turn on the computer again, the power switch has become unresponsive. Now I can't turn my computer on. (I don't actually know whether the computer is turned on or off because the screen is black). The notebook has a fixed battery, so I can't do a hard reset by removing it. What should I do?

When switching on, the power button lights up and f12 (wifi light) lights up orange. The caps lock light flashes twice between pauses. The screen does not light up and the computer doesn't seem to respond to anything. I've tried a hard reset to try and fix it but it doesn't seem to have changed anything. It's just over a year old and is used mainly for the internet on trusted sites.

Can anyone help?

For the past month or so every time I am in the middle of doing something - usually on the Internet - the cursor stops moving and nothing happens when I press the Winkey or CTRL+ALT+DELETE.

I've done several system scans but found nothing. The mouse is built in and not a USB mouse and I am using Vista Home Premium on a Del Inspiron 6400.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

A:Mouse freezes - having to switch off notebook regularly

Can be memory or other causes. Fill out your system specs and I will try to help.

While you get the information that I need, you can download this. You may want to run it overnight, because it needs several runs to be accurate.

Hi I recently purchased a Tiny universal adaptor after having left my H.P charger in a different location which meant I was going to be without it for a week or so.The Tiny charger did not pass on any power to the laptop.. I have since got back the H.P charger which came with the laptop, and tried powering it up. Still nothing.  My laptop is one of the B&O line with a non-removable battery. Do I need to claim on the warranty and replace or is there an easy fix? ThanksWill

Hello everyone,

It is my first post on that forum, so again - hello.

I do have some problems with my notebook - Acer TimelineX 5820TG with PQI S525 128GB SSD drive as a replacement for the oryginal drive.

After using it for three months, it started not to wake up from sleep, running extremly slow on startup, finally my graphics quality and performance in Starcraft II dramatically decreased to the point when even menu was "crippin".

I did reverted the system to the point after just drivers and Office 2010 were installed (+ skype + avira as well). Everything was running smooth for four days maybe. Again, SC2 got unplayable, and moreover, I have occasional BSODs (twice i think) during the GPU switching from ATI to Intel ( external to internal GPU).

Hello there, well... i'm not on the BSOD squad but from what i see in the log, the cause of that particular BSOD is the Avira Antivirus and your Graphic Cards...

I also recommend to download the drivers from the manufacturer's website, in your case, go to:

Graphics Drivers & Software

And download the latest drivers for your notebook.

After that, uninstall your current ATI drivers, run Driver Sweeper to remove any leftover from the drivers, reboot and then install the new ones...

So the other day I shutdown my PC for maybe a little less than an hour, when I booted it back up however it took much longer to get past the bios splash screen. It took about 1.5 minutes whereas normally it would take less than ten seconds.
After this it informs me that one or more SATA drives was not detected, I then get to the screen where asking me to select my OS, I select W7, which is on the HD that I believe to have failed. Of course it doesn't boot giving me some message about the files being inaccessible.

I power down my PC and unplug the offending HD, my PC now boots at normal speed. I then go onto try booting the HD with a different SATA cable, a different power cable, and then finally in another PC. No luck whatsoever. The HD isn't detected in the bios and I've tried different sata ports.

The HD is powering on, but it is making strange noises. I’m honestly not sure if these noises are abnormal or not as I have never listened for them before. The noises only occur for a few brief seconds when the PC is powering on and then stop entirely.

The HD is a Seagate Barracuda 500GB, Model no. ST3500320AS(Crappy Wal-Mart model that I was foolish enough to put faith in). Later I am going to attempt to read the drive via an ehd enclosure, the reason I haven’t tried this yet is that I’ve managed to lose the power adapter, but I’m going to pick one up later. I’ve rather not try anything this draconian, but I&... Read more

I am working on a PC for a friend. PC has a 7S35/7S45 AMD mother board with an AMD1900+ CPU and 3 128 MB Ram Dimms. After an hour or more the system will abrubtly reboot with no warning and often can not reboot XP(getting in a loop with the safemode option screen.) Waiting several hours, system will boot up OK. Sounds like a temperature thing to me and was surprised when I opened the PC up that there is not a fan for the case (only over the CPU and in the power supply.) I ran the PC with the cover off an a window fan blowing on it. I still had the problem. Occassionally when it does reboot, I would enter BIOS and view PC Health and the CPU temperature is never over 40C.

I then took the recommendation I found that it could be the HDD LED wirinng, so I removed all of the wiring except for On/Off button. Still had the problem.

Last thing I did was to pull out all 3 of the 128 RAM DIMMS and put in one of my 256 RAM that I know is good. I have not had the problem. I therefore suspect that either one of the DIMMS is bad or one of the motherboard DIMM slots.

Does it sound like I am going about this the correct way? Any suggestions? I assume my next steps will be to re-introduce each of the original 128 DIMMs, one at a time and see if the problem reoccurs. Thing that still bugs me is, why does it have to wait for the system to be on for awhile? Guess it must be some connection that is failing based upon temperature.

Now it starts up with 100% CPU utilization with svchost.exe consuming most of it. It continues for about 5 minutes and then abruptly shuts down.

My computer is Dell 700m and I work on Windows XP professional.

These are my small business related and I am looking for some help from anyone who can tell me what could be the error /s and how to identify the possible probelm and possible solition.

My ex-wife's computer, an antique from 10 years ago, has recently been making strange, loud noises that I suspected to be the hard drive. Not wanting to lose her data she asked me to bring over an old HD I have to back-up files on. While I had the case open I also took the time to use some canned air, as it hadn't been dusted in what looked like its entire lifespan. As well I took out a modem card and tried installing an old soundcard I had laying around. When I'd got everything in place and plugged it back in, nothing happened when I turned it on. No beeping, no false start, zilch. So I reversed all of my moves and set it back up exactly as I'd found it and tried again. Nothing doing.

I find it a bit strange that the power supply would give out. I suppose it is possible that it was under-performing, thereby causing the strange noises by not giving enough power to components to run properly, and perhaps my tinkering is what finally caused it to die altogether, but that seems unlikely. I am wondering if perhaps there may be something in the hardware that I overlooked. I am certain everything was plugged back in correctly, but it just seems like too much of a coincidence. It's not that big of a deal as a new power supply is cheap, or she may even take this as a sign to upgrade to a new(er) system, but I'd still like to know what may have caused it.

I don't have the specifics of her system, other than it has a Pentium II.

I've had this Vaio Media Center XP for about four months now, and lately it's been abruptly shutting down and restarting without warning or provocation, about once every few days.

It just did it an hour or so ago and when it did come back up there was the popup saying something like "The system has just recovered from a serious something or other; would you like to send an error report, etc." When I sent the report, the MS page that came up said it was related to a driver conflict, but that the cause could not be determined. I haven't installed any new hardware and accompanying driver except a Creative Zen Nano Plus MP3 player. No major video or sound cards, no disc drives, etc.

I'll run a HJT and paste the log below:

This looks like overheating to me. You could try getting a can of air and blowing it in the vents, but it's always better brigning it to a computer shop for them to open it to blow the dust out of the laptop.

For the past week, my windows 7 desktop (custom built) has been randomly restarting, no bsod. It would sometimes last several hours, then restart, other times it would restart seconds after restarting, causing startup repair to come up and attempt repair, only for the restart to occur at another random time. Other times chkdsk run at startup and removes some 'corrupted' disk files, but the system will still restart at random intervals.

I've noticed my computer WILL NOT restart when I unplug the internet cable (USB wireless card) so for awhile I've been thinking its either a USB port problem, or a power problem to my USB port. Because in addition to the internet, plugging in any phone/USB charging device would cause an instant restart on plug in, denoting it probably is a USB/power problem. I have tried all USB ports on my desktop(front, back, 2.0/3.0) still same result.

I have disabled windows automatic restart, scanned my computer multiple times with BitDefender 2015 and SpyHunter, ran chkdsk multiple times, still no luck, I have completely no idea why my computer is experiencing such restarts.

Any help would be eminently appreciated, this has been the most frustrating issue I have experience with this built for the two years I have owned it.

At first, when I checked this on this new rig, file transfers ran between 60-100 mbps, but the last several times it has dropped off to 1-2 mbps. I checked the drive involved with HD Tune, and it performed about the same as it did on the first test, so I don't think that it is a hardware problem. Nothing else was running that should slow things down, so what else could account for this?

Recently, my UPS stopped working for unknown reasons, so while i sent it to repair, my computer had no backup power. Then, there was a storm here that made the lights flicker in a way that my computer shut down abruptly. Not only that, for 5 seconds it turned on and off really quickly. I was playing fallout 3 when that happened, and when i tried playing it again, my save game had corrupted.

That was not the issue though. After this, my windows installation feels unresponsive. Weird little things happen, like sometimes i enter a website's address in chrome and hit enter, yet nothing happens, a white screen loads. I have to refresh, then it works.

Also, sometimes menus don't work, like i hit Apply or Ok, but nothing happens, then i wait like 10 seconds then it works again.

Another issue is my video card. It seems to have gotten loud when i play video games, i downloaded HWMonitor and it got up to 84 C, which isn't melting temperature but it's still pretty high. (it never got past 75 on high load, now it goes up to 80 for non-intensive games).

What should i do to fix/troubleshoot this?

So I was playing playing a little BFBC2 earlier tonight, when by mistake, I disconnected the power cord from my UPS with my foot, resulting in the computer shutting down abruptly.

My question is, what are the consequences of this kind of hard shutdown? should I be concerned with damages done to my system/hardware? (BFBC2 is a pretty demanding game, so my CPU and GPU were @ full load).

Thanks in advanced.

The possibilities range from no damage to complete HD fail. Chances are really high that there was no damage at all and if you have a back up (you do have a backup right?) no possibility of data loss

OK, you seem to have a version of Sasser on your computer. This worm/trojan will cause this 60 second shutdown message. For each of these steps (until it's fixed), if you get that message, immediately go to Start->Run and type in shutdown -a and hit OK. That will prevent it from shutting down.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

I recently downloaded Half Life 2: episode two via steam. It launches fine and the intro video plays fine. But when the actual game starts.. after i make a few movements.. a blue screen is shown. A totally blue screen. There is nothing written on it.. it's just a blue screen. I reinstalled windows.. and after that there is no blue screen. The computer just restarts and when it does, I am notified that the system recovered from a serious error.

Drivers are not the problem. I have installed and reinstalled the drivers for my cards, rollbacked to previous versions, tried on the latest versions and reinstalled directX.. all that has been done.

Hey, everyone. I just bought this new XPS 13 9035 and I'm at a loss for all of the issues I've run into since turning it on.
Out of the box I was getting BSODs (kernel_security_check_failure) when trying to connect to my work network which prompts a web page to sign in. I didn't encounter this when connecting to Starbucks or my home networks. Unrelated to the BSOD, the computer would freeze at times and the screen would go black. Only thing that would fix it was a hard reset.
After I managed to update Windows and a hand full of drivers, I'm still encountering these issues, but the black screen/freezing seems to have gotten more common. It seems to happen most when I'm browsing the web or playing a video (I use Chrome), but at other times I'll just be using MS Word and it'll crash.
-Ran the Driver Verifier and the computer couldn't start. I've included all the minidumps I had, but there didn't seem to be one generated by the Driver Verifier error.
-Sfc /scannow reveals errors that Windows can't fix.
-Memory Diagnostics Tool reveals no errors.
-Don't know if it's all related, but my administrator account lost Start button/Cortana/Action Center functionality a couple hours ago. Some tinkering in the PowerShell window couldn't fix it, but I created a new account with administrator permissions and the Start menu, ect., works fine in the new account only.
Sorry if this is an overload. I thought I'd reach out and see if I ... Read more

I have no idea what the deal is here. I have already run scans with Norton Antivirus 2006, Ewido Security Suite, and Webroot Spysweeper. Any suggestions? (Will post HJT log if needed)
My mouse and keyboard will freeze, and I will be unable to click or hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete or anything else. Also, I recently have had to reformat my hard drive, and my modem randomly disconnects every now and then. Any suggestions?

A:Comp freezes up if prolonged use of internet or abrupt bandwith use. Whats the deal?

Open up your case and make sure you have working fans cooling the system
video card
power supply
case fans etc....
sounds like a heat issue.

you may also want to check all heatsinks to ensure you don't have too much dust bunnies piling up in it.
FANs work better if they can actually cool the heatsink.
dustbunnies don't allow to sufficient cooling

good luck

Yesterday, I accidentally powered off my battery backup while I was playing a game (APB or All Points Bulletin). The next time I turned it on (5 minutes later), I get to the log-in screen, and type my password just fine and normal.

When I get to my desktop though, I will see about half a second of it before I get a black screen and my monitor says, "Input Signal Out Of Range". I googled this problem and tried this solution:

It didn't work.

When I log-in, the monitor says the voltage is an abnormally high number like 127 kHz and my Hz is set to 88 Hz or some random high number. This was with a VGA to DVI plug. Next, I tried plugging in an HDMI-DVI to my monitor and video card (respectively). It just says "No Input Signal" on my monitor. I've even done 2 system restores!

I can go in any type of safe mode fine. I've just about had it and I would looove some help!

Edit: I know it's not my monitor because I can plug my xbox 360 through HDMI and play it normally.
Here are my specs:

HDD: 7200 RPM 750 GB
Graphics Card: 512 MB ATi Radeon HD 4850

Need to no if I have this right

they have a dsl modem going to a Linksys router to a 24 port switch then to a little 4 port switch. sure, so then Would it be modem to router then router to any port on the big switch or is there an uplink port on the big switch it should go to? then you would hook a cat5e from one of the regular ports on the 24 port switch and run it to the uplink port on the 4 port switch need to no if the whole sequence is right. Hope someone can help, john will told me the cable would go from the big switch to the uplink on the small switch but I am wondering if I have it all right or not and wonderiing about from the router to the 24 port switch does the cable just go in a regular port in the big switch or if there is an uplink port does it go there. Hope you can understand my rambleing here. Thanks (please don't send me to a link) just need to no modem to router to regular port or uplink port on 24 port switch then from regular port on 24 port switch to uplink port on the 4 port switch. Thanks

A:Solved: Windows xp hookup question for modem, router, switch, to switch?

Router to uplink port on 24 port switch, and then normal port on the 24 port switch to uplink port on the second 4 port switch. An auto-MDX port on a device negates the need to worry about uplink ports for that particular cable connection.

I have Windows 7 Professional on my PC. In the first load I had, the PC should automatically detect if the LAN cable was plugged in, turn off the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable was now in use.
Unfortunately, I had to reload my PC, and since then I can't get it to do it again.
So, what I'd like to achieve is this: Have Windows automatically detect when the cable is plugged in, turn of the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable is in use - and, obviously, vice versa.
Can someone tell me what I need to do, please?

A:Have Windows 7 automatically switch to LAN when cable is plugged in and switch to wireless when it's removed

There are two methods can help you.
1. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings> and right click your wired and wireless adapters one at a time to change the properties. Select IPv4, click <Properties>
then click <Advanced>. For each one, clear the "Automatic metric" check box and assign the metric value manually. Setting your wired adapter?s metric value lower than wireless adapter one, such as ?1? for wired adapter and ?2? for wired adapter.

2. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings>,
hold down 'alt' to bring up the "File" menu, select "Advanced", select
"Advanced Settings" from the dropdown menu, adjust the priority of your wired adapter higher than your wireless adapter in the "Advanced Settings" window under the "Adapters and Bindings" tab.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click ?Mark as Answer? on the post that helps you, and to click ?Unmark as Answer? if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

I have a wireless router connected to my modem, and ALL PC's connect to that for internet.

I also have a gigabit switch I use to transfer data in between several of the machines. I do it quite often and I don't want it eating up the wifi bandwidth.
I have done it before, but it has been a long time and I cannot remember how I forced internet traffic over the wifi and local traffic through the switch
Is the only way to do it to specifically tell Windows to use the IP address of the LAN connection? I know it will work that way, forcing local traffic directly to that IP, but I seem to remember there being an easier way to do this.

I need to keep the laptop running, therefore I can't put it to sleep and logging-off has become a pain.

Hi everyone, I searched through the forums but couldn't really find what I was looking for.

Currently we have a DHCP server set up to a switch, that has a special line connecting to a switch in our shop which is just across our back lot, giving network access to the few computers over there. They recently put in a new machine that needs network access, but they have already accidentally cut two ethernet cords. I'm looking to provide a wireless solution for the machine, but I don't want to have to spend a few thousand dollars on a large wireless switch.

Can I plug a wireless router into the switch in our shop, and essentially turn it into a wireless bridge, or is there another, simpler way to do this?

If this has already been answered, sorry for missing it!

I thought that I had this all figured out, but my dad just asked me a question about my setup, and I can't answer it.

The setup is like this:
[ip-phones + computers]-->[small switch]-->[managed L2 switch]-->[router]-->[modem]

I have several ip-phones and computers grouped into blocks of 8. Each set of 8 is a medley of phones/computers connected to a small switch

Each of these switches, in turn, will be connected to a managed L2 switch that will create 2 VLANS: One VLAN will contain all of the phones, and the other will contain all of the computers. In turn, each VLAN will have its own router and DSL modem, thereby separating the network traffic.

I know that I can use this L2 switch to make the VLANS based on the MAC addresses of the devices. However, the smaller switches do not support 802.1q [VLANs]. Will it be a problem that the smaller switches do not support VLANs? Essentially, will this setup work to split up network traffic?

Thanks once again,

A:Computer, switch, switch, router, modem

I have the same DELL switch for my phones. You PoE will not carry across the linksys switches, so that is the first problem.
Next are the computers attached to the phones? Or does each device get its own drop?

And whats this about 2 routers and modems? Thats a bit over kill!! QoS would do the trick.

I would run all the devices off the Dell and attach the computers to the Phones (most IP Phones have a passthrough port) Configure the Dell with trunk ports with the Computer VLAN passing untagged traffic making it the native VLAN. While having the phones on a Tagged VLAN(If you phones conig allows you to set the VLAN in its config great! If not you can bind the MAC to the VLAN). The you create a QoS policy giving the VoIP traffic priority!

A problem has recently developed with my Envy notebook.   About 2 weeks ago my entire wireless network began slowing down when on it.   Noticeable on all devices.    When my provider came out, checked and tweaked some issues it appeared to be ok.   I went on with my daughers HP laptop and was drawing 20-24 mbps all over the house. When I reconnected mine to the system I was only pulling 6, 3, 5, up and down.   It doesn't start right away but after a few minutes.   So I put my duaghers right next ot mine and low and behold, when I ran her's it pulled 3 - 6 also.   So I turned my wi-fi off and hers' popped right back up.   I have also tried this with an old XP mini, my i-pads etc.   As soon as mine gets on the network the speed crashes.    This also happens with no one else home and no other devies conncted. I have downloaded the latest up to date Intel driver for this network adapter and it hasn't changed anything. Any ideas?

Bill_Ving Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about wireless networking poor performance and wanted to help. My immediate guess is that you might have mixed-mode networking going on.  This happens when you have two different PCs networking in two different modes -- one using "G", the other using "N".  The wireless router (or access point) can optimize performance for either mode, but not for both.  So, the "G" mode drags down the performance of the "N" mode PC, but even worse, with the router set for mixed modes, it performs more slowly than with either PC connected by itself. Here are some other troubleshooting steps you can try: HP PCs - Troubleshooting Wireless Network and Internet (Windows 8) | HPģ Customer SupportGood Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------Please click "Accept As Solution" on the post that solves your issue to help others find the solution. Please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on the left of the Reply button to say thanks fopr my help.========================================================================

I made a Google notebook to keep the minutes of a meeting my business partners and I held last weekend. I made them all collaborators on the notebook so they could all make any changes or annotations they felt necessary. However, when they go to access this notebook they are prompted for a password.

There is nowhere (at least that I can find) to even choose to password protect the notebook let alone change the password. I'm pretty confused as to what password the notebook could be. The only thing I can think of is that it's asking for the password to my gmail account, which I don't really want to be handing out. Any ideas on this one gang?

We are moving to a new office location. The guys who will be setting our network is proposing the following equipment:

1. 3Com 24-port 10/100 mbps switch
2. 24-port Patch panel
3. 6u data cabinet
4. 1u cable management

The new office will be a 2-floor building with around 40 computers. I asked some of my friends who are more expert on network setup and told me typical switch (Linksys, Cisco) will do if we need to save some money.

What do you think? Thanks a lot!

A:Is 3Com 24-switch necessary or typical switch will do?

Well, first off, I'd be specifying a gigabit switch for expandability, I can't see investing in a 10/100 switch in 2010! If you don't need a managed switch, or need to save money initially, and unmanaged switch will probably be significantly cheaper.

In point of fact, if you want to go really cheap, you can get away for less than $100! switch&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20

I understand that a hub is more like a party line, where all devices hear and read data before sending it to next port, and a switch is advanced hub. But, what is a router. I know what a wireless router is, but they say a router is more advanced than a switch. Can you buy a non-wireless router?

Also, can you connect 2 switches together? So, Modem-----to Switch----to Switch----Computer

And both switches have other devices connected?

A:Hub vs Switch vs Router/ 2 Switch Story

you CAN buy a non-wireless router--but--the two I found on Amazon were only 10/100 (most modern systems use gigabit ethernet 10/100/1000) but wired are generally cheaper than a wireless router(the Cisco below is NOT cheap)--however--it's not necessary to use the wireless part of the wireless router as most have at least 4 ports (wired).

Yes you can connect switches together but they won't allow for multiple computers to connect to the Internet (at least not easily nor in a way that makes sense).

What devices are you trying to connect together?

My wife has a two-year-old Samsung notebook. Recently when she unplugged it the machine cut off, even though the battery said 79% charged (it wouldn't charge any further). I figured that the battery was bad so I bought another one from Amazon.

This one charges to 100% percent and does exactly the same thing. I'm perplexed but think there's something going on with the motherboard that won't let it use battery juice, even if Windows 8.1 says it's 100% charged.

I've tried the hold the power button down for 1 min with the battery out trick to no avail.

Any ideas? I'm stumped and think I might need to get her another notebook.

New here and so I hope that I am posting in the correct place.
My new notebook an M50-MX5 was in the warranty depot as we thought it had a dvd burning problem, however that was not the case; it was the media.

Anyway before it was sent into the toshiba warranty depot the level 2 tech phone support said to get the computer to be like it was when I unboxed it 2 days earlier, this was last month.
And so to my frustration all of my programs were removed, however before doing this the software techie at the office Ghosted it to my Western Digital Storage Unit and then sent it off to the Warranty Depot.

While it was in the shop I used my 3 yr old toshiba satellite 2410 which I am now typing on at this moment.
I was finally able to get the software tech from the office to reGhost my new toshiba M50 on this past Saturday and left it with him for a couple of hrs and then returned to pick it up as there was not much in the way of programs on it and so it wouldn't take long to Ghost the Images back.

Well, in my Western Digital Storage unit are Ghosts of this 3 year old satellite that I am presently using.
After the techie got my Restore Disk installed and tried to reGhost the image onto the New M50, it crashed.

He was using the wrong Ghost, he was using the one that was from this unit???
I was not happy, especially after he claimed that he now had it Ghosted with the proper Image and I tried it out and it was very sloooooow to Boot. He said it was my Norton 2006.

Something you might want to try (it's a pita) is a repair of windows - this may fix some of the slowness issues you're seeing. The install program he's talking about is probably the U3 component of many larger USB pen drives. I think it's on most of Sandisk's newer large drives. A repair of windows might also take care of this. I seriously doubt that putting the wrong image on the machine and then putting another image on could do any damage to the machine itself - the folks here at my job do it all the time.

I am about to add 3 new servers into an existing network, which is currently all on 1gbps ethernet. All of the new servers are SSD-based and to me it makes sense to go with 10gbps coming out of the servers into a switch, and then 1gbps out to the workstations.

The new server location is about 200 feet from the existing networking equipment/old server location, so using Cat 6A/Cat 7 copper would be REALLY nice/economical.

Where I am hitting a jam is any 48 port gigabit + 4 10gbps switch is $$$.

I am trying to find a small 10gbps copper switch, say an 8 port, that is expandable, and compatible with a 48 port 1gbps switch. Does such a thing exist?

Hello. I currently have a home network as follows.

3 PC's connected to router.
router connected to cable modem.

I would like to increase the througput on my LAN (amongst the 3 pc's) so I'm thinking about adding a switch such that it would be [3pc's->switch->router-cable modem]. I was wondering whether adding the switch would actually improve the LAN thoroughput or is this just adding unnecessarily repetetive. I am aware of the "7 layers of the osi model" of networking but am wondering whether switches and routers work on the same layers. Im assuming NO because router bases routing based on IP address while switch will deal with the MAC addresses (am i correct???). Since a switch will perform less inspections on the packets (IP filtering, SPI, etc..) am I going to get better results when adding the switch??

BTW, my router: SMC2804WBR
Switch i might add: Gigafast Mini Switch EZ500-S

A:To switch or not to switch? That is the question.

Your router has a 100Mbit switch in it so unless you are getting a gigabit switch and your PCs have gigabit interfaces you will get no significant boost in network speed.

You may get a small speed inrease if you buy a good 100Mbit switch - the ones integrated in home routers tend to be the bottom of the barrel type - this will give you some extra under very high loads.

What is a "good" switch? You would want something with crossbar fabric and/or cut-through packet forwarding (those are expensive).

Hello ,

When I ran Windows 98, I was constantly rebooting and always switched the whole system off at the end of the day.

What are the pros and cons of leaving Windows 2000 on indefinitely?
Also, will this affect the wear of my monitor? Should that be switched off separately and the system left running?

Win2K is certainly very much more stable than 98, and hasn't crashed since I had it installed.

Pentium III
Win 2K
480 MB RAM
550 cpu

(I am looking to upgrade motherboard and videa card, etc. as soon as funds are available.)

Thanks for any thoughts you may have.

So I just bought a KVM Switch mini size, the guy at the store told me that it would do the trick. The trick meaning that I would be able to switch between the Xbox 360 and the PC with no problems, at first I had a lot of trouble getting it to work until I realised that I had forgotten to plug the keyboard cable into the KVM Switch. At least I managed to get things to work... A bit.
The problem is that I manage to switch between the PC and the 360, but once I've switched to the 360 it immediately goes back to the PC. I've checked everything in the manual and I'm doing it "right" as far as I know:
"7. Switch between the computers (PC1 and PC2) by pressing the 'Select' button on the front panel.

Use the 'Hot Key' command on the keyboard. Press [Scroll Lock] quickly twice and then [1] or [2] to switch between computer 1 and computer 2."

Whenever I do this the KVM Switch beeps, switches to the 360 then back to the PC, could anyone please give me a hand?

Would like to get some opinions on this. I have a Dell N3000 switch and a Cisco 2901 router. Somebody recommend to me to consolidate the two devices and let the N3000 switch and route. My question is, is there are performance increase? What is the downfall of bundling the two devices? What is the upside?

Hi - I am having to extend my network and want to use 2 switches. Current one is a Belkin 5 port 10/100. Now thinking of buying the:

Belkin 8 port 10/100 (F5D5513Iuk8) or
Netgear 8 port 10/100 (FS608) or
Netgear Prosafe 8 port 10/100 (FS108).

Which is the best one to get (I realise the Netgear Prosafe is normally more expensive but I can get it at the same price as the Belkin)?

Could anybody also advise if the second switch will provide as much speed (bandwidth, I think) to the PCs it supplies (3) as the first one which will be linked to my router and 3 PCs and a couple of printers. I would really appreciate any advice you can give - I have spent ages Googling this question and am still not clear.

Many thanks

Hi all,

Just wondering if I can connect a switch to a switch? so my network would look like this

Router ---- Switch ---- Switch - - - - computer connected wirelessly

primary reason for doing this is i want to bring the wireless router closer to the middle of my house... some areas are getting really weak signals..

A:Switch to Switch Connection?

You could do that, but why not just get a longer network cable? Ethernet on Cat-5e is good up to 100m.

I just bought a netgear Cable/DSL router with an 8 port switch built in. I am currently still at school, so there is no need for the router, but I want to use the hardware as a switch. I am confused as to how to set this up.

The router I have is a Netgear RO318.

I know very little about setting up networks, but I assumed it would be the same as just switching out the hub. Boy was I wrong. I switched them out and it doesn't work like I thought it would. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks all.

I am in the process of setting up a pretty extensive gigabit network in my home. I have the new D-Link DIR-655 Pre-N Router with four gigabit ports and I am using all four to run to 8-port D-Link unmanaged switches in four locations. The first location is right next to the router. I have a fifth location. I searched hard for an 8-port wired gigabit router. If I had found one (at a reasonable price) I would use it as the base in from the modem then use the D-Link for wireless only (no routing). Alas ... I was unable to find one and so I am wondering if there are any issues running from a switch to another switch.

A:Router to switch to switch?

Only issue is a slight impariment in speed as it passes thru two switches and the router . . You may not be able to decerne it.

Hi, I have 3 computers in our house. An Athlon XP 2000 (512K DDR 2700), an Athlon 550 and a 233 IBM laptop. All are networked and running WIN98se. The XP 2000 machine is about 3 months old and Iíve noticed that it is not as stable as the older machines. Sometimes it freezes and sometimes I get Ďprogram not respondingí during shut down. Itís not a major problem, just an annoyance, but I wonder why the XP machine is less stable than the others?

Iím thinking of upgrading the Operating systems of all of the machines, but Iím not sure to what. Windows XP seems like the logical choice, but Iíve heard that you canít load it on more that one machine. I want to be able to install the new OS on all 3 machines without having to buy 3 copie$$$. I donít know that much about Windows 2000 Pro. Is it limited to only one machine also? Iíve heard to stay away from Windows ME.

Can anyone give me a suggestion? Thanks.

What is the difference between a hub and a swtitch? I want to buy a Linksys router, but I can't decide wether to buy the one with the four ports built in, or buy the one with the LAN and WAN ports and use the Linksys hub I already have to connect my three comp's. together. Any thoughts?

A:hub vs. switch

Switching hub acts like a traffic cops that allows signals to travel freely without collision. As for Linksys router, get the 4-port one if you don't have a hub. In your your case, I suggest buy the one-port router since your have a hub and plus it's less expensive.

Hi all, I was thinking about getting a router for my computers so that one computer could go on w/o the other having to be on. Anyways I'm gonna get a linksys router but i don't know what a switch is. There's a router w/ it and w/o.

Also, I would still be able to share music and some files across my network that I have right now, Do I use a hub or can I do that through the router? If you could explain networking w/ the router for me that'd b great.

Hi guys

My first post here and I'm seeking help!

My PC has been working fine for months (since new).

It has an Aopen AK86Lmotherboard with an AMD Athlon 64 3200 processor.

I was using my PC this morning and it just switched off! I thought there hd been a power break but no.

I tried switching the PC back on, there was a quick flash of the power LED but that was it - NOTHING.

I removed the side panel and noticed a red LED on the motherboard was illuminated.

I tried to switch the PC on again, the power LED flashed and the CPU fan twitched but that's about it!

I thought it was likely to be a power supply problem so I replaced the power supply with a new one, made off all the connections correctly, connected the mains power lead, the red LED on the motherboard illuminated. I switched on from the front panel switch. Once again, the power LED flashed and the CPU fan twitched, but that was it - the red LED on the motherboard remained lit.

Any ideas guys?

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Since a new psu hasn`t solved your problem, I`m afraid it looks like your mobo has died.

Maybe your other psu went bad and took out the mobo, it`s not uncommon.

Hey i got 2 computer i am trying to connect to one monitor the problem I am having is that one computer is a compaq which has the mouse & keyboard connections on the back, but the other computer is a dell which does not have the mouse & keyboard ports on the back it uses a usb for the mouse & keyboard. The KVM switch I have needs the connection for the mouse & keyboard it does not support the usb is there a way to get it working or is there a different switch I can use. Also I have tried to use the usb to ps2 but it still does not work.

A:Need help with KVM switch

I suppose you could try going the other way and use a switch that uses USB. Both PCs will be connected to the switch by USB cables and you would be using the Dell USB keyboard and mouse for the console end.

That solution will leave you with your present KVM switch doing nothing.

I have been using windows 2000 for a since it first came out. I haven't upgraded to windows xp. I have been following the developements of XPlite. It makes me think that if and when XPlite is released should I change to the xp OS. Are there major pros/cons of windows 2000 vs windows XP? Does anyone have a preference and why.

I know that question is a classic but, in my mind, I want to know if XP is all that and a bag of chips or just a new skin over w2k. Some say that the install on Xp is about 1.2g vs win2k is 400meg. For all that extra size does it offer anything that win2k doesn't?

Any info on this would be great

I Have Windows 7 RC Build 7100 32 bit. I've been playing Fallout 3 A lot recently and been adding many many mods. It seems however, I've added so many that it needs more memory than the application is normally able to address. I have a utility which will allow it to use more RAM, however i need to enable the 3 GB switch for this to work. I know on Vista the command was "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072" However this is apparently not the case in Windows 7. Any Thoughts? Anyone know how to enable this change in Windows 7?

Since I installed my new nvidia graphics card, 7600GT, when I click START - TURN OFF, the PC closes down then reboots itself.

Any suggestions please?

A:PC will not switch off

would you provide more info
make model of PC
do you know if the card is compatable with the PC
can you post the power rating of the PSU {watts 350W, 200W, 400W etc what do you have}

have you installed the card correctly - check nothing has fallen into the slot

can you boot into safe mode - hit F8 as the PC starts up

re-reading the post - does the PC work fine with just the exception of switching off
if so and you are on XP
control panel>
advanced tab>
startup and recovery - settings>
under the title - system failure
untick - automatically restart;en-us;320299

now when it crashes - it willnot restart and the blue screen should stay on the screen
post the info on the screen
it will give the errorcodes and a filename, if caused by a driver.

it may be the video driver and need updating

Today, each time I turned PC on at base of CPU, it turned itself off after a few seconds. Kept happening. I'd had that yesterday too, but after a couple of pressings of the restart button it connected OK, and stayed on. But today it wouldn't open.

I got a local boffin in to give me a quote. He said he'd have to take the hard drive, back up my data, wipe drive clean, reinstall my programmes, and return it. £145. Not bad, really.

But isn't this just a glorified way of switching it off and then on again? I'd do that ; but it means I'd have to re-do all my codes - log in, mail, internet banking, I can hardly remember most of those.

So, 2 questions, if I may : when he arrived the computer had started itself and - so far - is operating perfectly, but he opened something called an event log and showed me all sorts of terrifying data showing how many errors I'd had in the past ten days. Is this log kosher?

Second question : what else might cause a PC to switch off a few seconds after switching on? I wondered if the fan might have a trip-switch that turns off the cpu if there's too much dust.(doesn't seem to be, but.) All the power leads are secure ; and the power-light on the cpu is on. But although the green light stays on, the little red one that tells you something is happening clicks off. Is there, for instance, a virus that makes your pc turn itself off?

Any ideas?

It's working fine now, incidentally ; but I kept it on fro... Read more

Where I live now the ISP Comcast almost has a monopoly. This is a very lousy company and they have outsourced their customer relation people to India, Mexico, & the Phillipines. And they charge so much money to have a pretty good progam with them for T.V. & Internet.

At this point I've spent so many hours trying to communicate computer problems at the number your given for Comcast that I think there is no point in calling them anymore unless I need a service call, because they always tell you the same things which at times makes your problem worse instead of better.

AT&T has been doing a lot of advertising for a while now and send reps to canvas areas from time to time. If I switched to AT&T I would save a lot of money. The reason I haven't yet is that I've heard that the download time is pretty slow.

The last time one of their reps came to see me I asked him what their download speed was. He said it was a guaranteed 24 Mbps. He also said that with comcast there were times when it really slowed down such as when kids get out of school and start using their computers.

I downloaded a site a long time ago called and when I use it with my computer it usually shows I'm getting download speeds of around 36 Mbps. They also have different tiers for your internet use which probably could make it faster....but I wouldn't get one because you have to pay even more. I just have one T.V. & one computer & I don&#... how do i switch my (c with (d?

also if use alot of the 76gb harddrive space will my computer slow down?

A:How do I switch my (c:) with (d:)?

I caught the first part of that but you lost me in the end.

Are you trying to say you want the "C" drive to have 127GB and the "D" drive to have 76.4GB?

First of all make sure your "D" drive has at least 51GB-52GB free space still on it. You can right click the "D" drive in "My computer" and go to property to see how much you have left.

Then download GPARTED from here.
This one brings you right to the download:

Get the latest version.

Then once its installed and running have a nice read.

Another way to do this is by reformatting the computer but this will erase everything on your computer.

And no, your computer will not slow down unless your hard drive is fragmented, it will increase startup and shutdown times though.
