Created a wifi hotspot on my laptop, the devices are connecting but with no internet access.

Q: Created a wifi hotspot on my laptop, the devices are connecting but with no internet access.

I wanted to share my ethernet internet connection over wifi so I have created a wifi hotspot on my laptop using "NETSH" commands in cmd prompt.
I have enabled sharing of ethernet connection by going to ethernet properties>>sharing>>check box (Allow other network users to connect through this computer) but the internet is not being shared.
I have configured other devices with static IPs. Gateway and subnet mask is also correct. I am also using different IPs of the same subnet.
Everything was working fine until perhaps I tried installing Connectify software, I uninstalled it later.
Kindly help to troubleshoot the issue.

Dear All,

I'm having iball laptop with LAN connectivity in Windows XP Service Pack 3. I found out how to create hotspot on laptop and tried it. Everything gone fine, network is showing up in my Ipod Touch too. But even after connecting to this network, I cannot access internet!!

Then I checked in Network Connections that both LAN & Wireless Connections are connected, but in Wireless Connection when checked in status the packets are sending but not receiving. I tried checking out solutions for this but no method worked for me ....

This is how it shows with the command "ipconfig"....

This morning i tried to use other devices (another laptop, a cell phone and an ipad) that were working fine before, but now they don't have internet access. The devices can connect to the router, but internet shows "No internet". I was checking if their were getting the info like ip, dns..etc and they had it so have no clue what's going on. The only 2 things that do not have problems is my laptop and a WDTV Media Player.

Hi guys

I want to share my Internet connection through wi-fi and specs are as follows:

Although I have done every thing correct, hotspot created and sharing is also done but don't know why newly created network don't have internet access?

When you check the box "Allow other networks users to connect through this computer's internet connection", you also need to click on that drop down labeled "Home networking connection:" and select "hotspot 2" from the list.

EDIT: I just tried it on my Win 8.1 laptop. The instructions say to select the newly created network from the Drop down list but it doesn't appear in the list.

Good day,

Due to my coming posting to a place without a wifi connection for my tablet, I decided to turn my laptop into a wifi hotspot.

I googled and found this post:

How to turn your Windows 7 laptop into a wireless hotspot | News | TechRadar

I thought, "Hey, that's cool". So I did everything mentioned there to the letter. It worked, my laptop was able to create its own hotspot, which was well cool. I connected my tablet to the new wifi connection. It did work, but I had no internet connection. So I assume that whatever I did, it disconnected my wireless adapter to created the hotspot. So I thought, that's fine, I'll just use a network cable.

Now here's the real problem.
1) I disconnected the connection, but my wireless network on my laptop told me that I had no internet connection.
2) I checked my tablet and reconnected the tablet to my home wireless network. It worked fine. I'm posting this using my tablet on home wireless.
3) No issue with my laptop nor the hardware, because prior to following the tutorial, my wireless network works just fine.
4) I tried disabling the device in Network & Sharing. No difference.
5) I stopped hostednetwork. No difference.
6) I disallowed hostednetwork. No difference.
7) As a last ditched effort, I turned on the system restore and reverted back to an earlier point. That finally work. My laptop finally has an internet connection again.

So my question is, what actually happened here and if I encounter th... Read more

A:No internet connection after I turned my laptop into wifi hotspot

To my knowledge the WiFi adapter work as either a connection point to a WiFi router/Wireless access point or AS a wireless Access Point, WiFi Hot Spot, but not both. So you would need to connect the notebook to a router (internet connection) with a Ethernet cable. Then the computer will take the internet from the Cable and send it out to connected devices.

Hi all,
I have a rather perplexing problem with internet access from my laptop (Win 7 Home Premium, Avast Free). My property is a large building with thick, granite walls so I've added 3 hard-wired, wireless access points (2 recycled, old routers and a TP-Link WAP) in various locations back to the main router (BT Homehub 3), served by up-to 8Mbps BT broadband service (I typically get 6Mbps - no fibre-broadband available here!) Just to complicate things a little more, this is a holiday property with 4 other families staying, so bandwidth use is a little difficult to control.
Mostly, everyone has been fine: my Android phone, my Nexus tablet and my wife's iPad plus other visitors' various devices all connect via wifi from any of the access points. (Everyone had problems this morning but I think BT may have been doing something with the exchange overnight so I'm going to assume, for now, it's just my laptop that's having problems).
OK, the laptop will connect to any access point, including the main router, but generally states "No internet access" from there. I say "generally" because it has done on past visits to the property and sometimes connects briefly - usually if I reset, disconnect or unplug something. Also, I CAN connect the laptop via Ethernet from any point.
Can someone outline a process I can try to identify and fix the laptop please? If problems recur with other kit I may need help with my local network too.
Thanks,

Hi...

I've set up my internet-connected laptop (Acer Aspire One with Windows 7 Starter) as wifi hotspot. The hotspot works to the extent that it lets another computer connect, but it does not provide (pass through) the internet access I have (via 3G USB modem).

While searching the net for useful information I came across the recent thread
No internet connection after I turned my laptop into wifi hotspot

Following up on the two tutorials mentioned in that thread,
Windows 7 Tip of the Week: Use Wireless Hosted Networking to Share An Internet Connection Wirelessly | FAQ/Tip content from Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows
and
Windows 7 Hotspot: Share Wifi With Your Laptop
I noticed that on my laptop the important Share tab is missing that can be seen in the first image in the first tutorial and also in the first image in the section "Changing Adapter Settings" in the secodn tutorial.

The network adapters I can see on my laptop are

Local Area connection
(unplugged)

3G Internet
USB modem

Wireless connection
Atheros AR5B95

Wireless Connection 2
Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter

Many thanks in advance for suggestions and probing questions

A:internet connection not shared by my laptop turned wifi hotspot

If the sharing tab is missing then it means that the driver isn't up to date. About the only way to fix that is to look for a more recent version of the wireless driver. Just updating or reinstalling the driver might be enough although some adaptors simply can't support this feature as per Paul Thurrott's page on this.

Hi,

I am creating Wifi Hotspot in Windows 8.1 using the following command:

Code:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=MyHotspot key=mywifikey

Then I start the hosted network. After starting the hostednetwork, I enable Internet Connection Sharing on my Huawei E397bu-502 device (4G LTE USB Dongle) in Network Connections. I can successfully connected my Android KitKat device to the hotspot and have internet connectivity on my Android.

But the problem is that the Android Phone disconnects randomly. Then I need to run

Code:
netsh wlan stop hostednetwork

Code:
netsh wlan start hostednetwork

After this I can again connect my Android to hotspot. But the process of disconnection continues.

Same happens if I share my Huawei-E397 internet connection via USB to my Android. There are no logs available so i have no idea where is the problem.

Hi. I'm using a Gateway NV54 laptop and the wifi isn't connecting to the home network or internet. The wifi worked before the install, but not after. I have another laptop and the wifi works fine for it.

Recently did a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, 64-bit. Installed all drivers. Current wireless driver is Intel Wireless LAN Driver (since the laptop uses Intel Pentium processor).

When I click my home network in the list of connections it asks for the security key. I put in the key and immediately it says "windows was unable to connect to this network." Tried this multiple times. I can connect with ethernet but not wireless.

Tried pressing Xfinity router wireless button to pick up the laptop but it didn't work. Tried logging into Xfinity router from the other computer and manually put the laptop's computer name and mac address into router, restarted router, still can't connect.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi guys hope you can help,

I am having a problem with the devices on my home wireless network. There is a laptop, desktop, PS3 and an Ipod all of which access the internet through the wireless network, a few days ago however I was unable to connect to the internet with the desktop. It had been fine all day but then I left it and came back to it an hour or so later and was unable to get back online after having tried all the usual restarting of devices. I gave up and went to have a quick game on the ps3 to take my mind off all the work i was now unable to do and found that that too had lost its connection to the internet (also was fine earlier) checked my Ipod touch to see if that had access and neither did that, but in the background the girlfriend was obliviously typing away on facebook or something with no problems at all.

The next day all was well again everything had access to the internet so I just forgot about it and carried on with my life (as you do). However the day after that I had exactly the same thing again, I was using the PS3 online no problems. Girlfriend comes in and turns her laptop on so I disappear onto the PC to do some work and no internet connection again, check the PS3 and Ipod, also no connection only my girlfriends laptop is fine.

So....it seems to me, in my limited wisdom in such matters that, if I turn my desktop on first (before girlfriends laptop) and connect to the internet then all is well, but if she gets to the internet first then thats i... Read more

I have created a wifi hotspot on my work laptop (hp probook 640 g1) I started the hosted network and in the network and sharing page I could see the ssid 'hotSpot1' under the wireless network connection 2 (WNC2) icon. I also could see the ssid in the currently connected to part of the available networks page when selecting the bottom right hand corner bars. i.e.

currently connected to:

workcompany.com internet access

hotspot1 No internet access

However when I share the wireless network connection (WNC) that the workcompany.com is connected to with hotspot1. The ssid is changed to workcompany.com. so both WNC and WNC2 ssid's are displaying workcompany.com.

I have also lost the ssid in the 'currently connected to' section as well it now displays:

currently connected to:

workcompany.com internet access

When I look for hotspot1 from my mobile device I cannot find it. Anybody got any clues. Please help.

p.s. the workcompany.com internet is a domain (if it helps)

You do realize that an Ad Hoc network is sharing a wireless connection to another wireless client?

You are trying to use ICS to create an Ad Hoc network. This isn't a supported configuration although I have seen a few people get this to work but unfortunately it's not repeatable, it's also not reliable even if they do get it to work. It's basically not a supported configuration so it's very unlikely you can get this to work reliably if at all, but if you do find a way then please report the procedure here.

There is more than one way to do this but all require that you are using a certified Windows 7 driver which installs the Msoft Virtual WiFi adaptor which is used to set up the hosted wireless network.

The real problem with this is that if you already have a wireless connection then why would you need to create an Ad Hoc network in the first place?

I guess if you were somehow limited to a single connection it might come in handy, or if you needed to amplify the signal. You can't share through an Ethernet connection, it only works wireless to wireless.

You can set this up using the command prompt or you can install the connectify software which makes it easier for some. The links below explains the details about setting this up, take your pick, the last one is a download for a virtual router if that's what you wanted.

A:Setting up my Laptop as wifi hotspot using datacard

In order for the hosted wireless network to work you need to use a Windows 7 approved driver which will install the Microsoft Virtual WiFi mini port, this mini port is what allows you to create the hosted wireless network.

I'm not too sure about how this will work through a broadband dongle.

This link shows you how to set up a hosted wireless network both manually and using the connectify software.

Half of what I read I didn't get - but I went to HP and downloaded changes to the driver as directed. I still show the timeout issues. When I am tethered to the T-Mobile hotspot I have internet. On my main computer I have Windows 2007 and no issues with connecting via wifi. I called TMobile. They said it is a driver issue. I don't want to shell out $$ for a new computer or updated driver. In beginner terms can you help me out here? Thanks.

I have setup a WiFi Hotspot with MyPublicWiFi. Allowed Sharing in Local Area Connection *2. Everything seems to be in order as the Screenshot shows. But when I try to connect a mobile it gets connected to "MyPublicWiFi", no internet sharing from the USB Modem. I am on Windows 10 Home, with all updates installed.

I saw this post (which is now closed) but I'm not sure exactly what it is asking me to do: http://forums.techguy.org/networking/1002567-possible-use-wireless-router-iphone.html, which seems to tell me what to do but I'm not sure how to make a static IP address etc. Could someone explain this in a different way? I want to use my iphone personal hotspot to access the internet while still being on my home network (which is not online) to connect to my NAS. Ideally my router would pick up my iphone signal and then route it to my NAS and two laptops, but even if I'm just able to use the internet on the laptop while still connected to the home network would be great. Currently I'm running windows 7 on a bootcamped macbook pro retina, and an Asus RT-N56U router.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

My new Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro Laptop has Windows 10 pre-installed on there. I'm able to connect to regular wifi connections (like my home network), but it will not connect to Xfinity WiFi hotspots. I'll see the Xfinity hotspot available (but with a little 'exclamation point' shield symbol next to it), I'll click on "Connect" and it will think for a few seconds, then say "Can't connect to this network".

It doesn't send me to the webrowser log-in, it doesn't say "limited connectivity" or anything else that I'm used to dealing with. I've tried opening up a generic web browser to try to initiate the username and password sign in page, and nothing happens.

I've cleared my cache, restarted my laptop, removed known networks, added them, called both Xfinity and Lenovo, and both say it's the other's fault.

The conclusion I've come to is either somehow my wireless network adapter is not configured correctly to allow this hotspot to work, or somehow my antivirus firewall is blocking it (but I've disabled my McAfee firewall and this still doesn't work).

Is there a different wireless network adapter, or driver, or something that I should install? Is there a configuration I should set?

Please help!

T-Mobile's tech support can't seem to figure out my problem so I'm hoping someone here can help.

I just purchased a T-Mobile hotspot (ZTE) yesterday. It can connect to the T-Mobile network and appears to be working fine. My Wii can connect wirelessly to the the hotspot, but my laptop can only connect to the internet through the USB cord (which it's really not supposed to, because that's supposed to be for charging the device). When I try to connect via wifi to my hotspot, my computer can detect the network. However, after I immediately enter my password, it says that it cannot connect. When I click "Diagnose the problem" it says there was a timeout.

I have Windows Vista and one of the tech support people mentioned that Windows Vista sometimes has problems connecting with handshake devices (but he didn't know how to fix it). Another person said I should have about 20 seconds to type in my password, so it shouldn't be timing out so quickly. Is it something with my computer? I have a Compaq Presario CQ60. I had this same problem when I tried to connect to a friend's hotspot a couple weeks ago (I don't remember if it was also T-Mobile or another provider, though).

Thanks

My laptop connects to the local network, but it has no internet access.
If I run troubleshooting it says that the DNS server isn't responding.
It is not the internets fault, because my room mate net works fine. It's not the cables fault because I tried plugging it in both of my routers and in both of my room mates, using his cable. And it doesn't work.
Wifi works fine elsewhere, but I don't have a wifi router in my dorm.
Things that I've tried:
Flushing my DNS
Adding custom DNS ports, like Googles or OpenDNS
Resetting the laptop to previous restore points
Using winsock reset
Disabling/enabling the network
Disabling Avast

I've changed nothing on my computer. The net worked fine on tuesday in my dorm. I went home and it worked fine there. Yesterday I came back to my dorm and it just stopped.

Apart from that adapter do I need something else?

So I am wondering if I can make a 12 feet long USB cable from the desktop to the window and with the Wifi/WLAN Wireless Network USB Adapter in the window.

Hey all. First time poster, and a little stumped here, and looking for some troubleshooting advice. I'll try to keep this as brief as possible, while still sharing plenty of details.

I work as an IT Specialist for a small organization, primarily as help desk support, but since we're small I wear a lot of hats.

On Monday of this week, a user came to me complaining they couldn't get on our WiFi with their work laptop. I checked all the obvious things, no dice, noticed no other users were experiencing any issues, so since Mondays are crazy around here, I set him up with a Loaner machine, and I didn't get to his machine until Tuesday. Spent most of the day Tuesday troubleshooting, and still haven't found a solution.

Here is our equipment:
User laptop - Lenovo T450s, Win 7 Enterprise, full admin rights (we have a lax environment due to small size)
Server - Windows Server 2008 R2, configured to hand out DHCP
Firewall - Sonic Wall N2600 (recently purchased, and configured by vendor) hands out DHCP on VLAN 2 & 3 our BYOD & Guest networks.
WiFi - Ruckus system, installed late 2015. Consists of 3 Ap's (our office has office space on two sides of a building with a hall in the middle).

Here is the scenario:
User can dock their laptop which is then hard lined to Ethernet and it accesses the web, our file server, print server, etc. If they undock however, it will connect to our work WiFi, initially show an "!" stating no internet connection, then it will go to &... Read more

Running Win 7 64-bit. -Running two routers. 1st router is ISP facing, which is connects via wireless bridge to a second Linksys WRT (don't remember exact model atm) to extend range in my house. Either way, I get the same problem when connecting host machine to either router. When I am connected to downstream 2nd router (via wireless bridge) my default gateway points to the first router. I think under normal conditions the first router acts as DHCP server (second one disabled?)

Basically, I want to set up host machine as ad hoc wifi hotspot via Windows wizard. I set up the virtual wifi hotspot and it seems to work (followed these instructions: How To Turn Your Windows 7 Laptop Into a WiFi Hotspot).

I then try to connect with the client machines to newly created ad hoc wifi hotspot by selecting wireless network and entering password, and the process fails, saying DHCP lookup failed.

I open cmd.exe and run "arp -a" and see that APIPA addressing is active in lieu of dynamic IP address and that the client machine does have an APIPA address, yet I cannot access internet.

Is it a DNS issue? I notice that when I run ipconfig /all on host machine it shows DNS servers as hexademical values (MAC addresses?). I was under the impression that in the absence of DHCP, which the host machine cannot serve to client, APIPA will kick in thus giving address to host machine. But it seems like I can't get onto internet with this machine. I mean, how does the client access DNS tables w... Read more

A:Trouble setting up wifi ad hoc hotspot - cannot connect to internet

APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing - 169.254.0.0) means you couldn't discover any DHCP servers. I don't have much experience in wireless routing but if in bridge mode I guess router 2 was supposed to be somewhat transparent. Normally (shouldn't be the case while bridged) DHCP protocol can't be routed, would need a DHCP proxy set up at the 2nd network segment.

Hmm, to not complicate things, can your host machine connect to the wireless network (normal private IP address)? And if so, to the Internet?

When connected to the 2nd router, in cmd (copy paste):

Code:
ipconfig -all | clip
It won't show anything but copy info to clipboard automatically, paste here.

The Goal: To connect my laptop to the internet through my digital phone.

I have a digital phone with a 3000-anytime-minute plan and I seldom use much more than half the minutes allotted in the plan. I understand thare is a data cable I can get for my phone that will allow me to use my cell phone as a connection to the internet from my laptop's modem.

I have seen "data kits" for sale on the internet; but, none of them mention anything about using them for internet access. They mention fax and other things but not internet.

I called T-Mobil and unlike it was in the olden days, no one knows anything much for sure when one asks questions not in their flow-charts.

Does anyone know anything about these data cables?
Can one actually use one to connect to the cell phone and dial up the internet?
Does anyone know what the transfer rates are?

T-Mobile does have a data package that runs supposedly at 53K and it sounded quite attractive until I found it is cell-phone-access-only and dialup from a land-line is disallowed. I will not accept that restriction.

Dear Friends,

I am encountering strange issue while connecting my laptop to my home wifi router. I have 4 devices connected to router and working perfectly, but my Dell laptop suddenly stopped connecting to internet. It seems to be connected to router, but says No Internet Access. This is new issue, since it was working fine along with other 4 devices in the past.

Tried doing some basic steps, like - Removing the devices from Network Center and adding again, Reset the Router, ipconfig /renew ipconfig /release..but nothing works.

The funny thing is when I do a USB/Wifi Hotspot Tethering using same wifi with my Android phone, the Dell laptop connects to internet.

So, Its clear that Wifi Router is Good, Internet is Good, Laptop Network Card is also good, but something else is wrong. Please help.

I would be happy if anybody could help me solve my network connection problems. I am trying to connect my laptop to internet via wireless router and modem. It successfully connected to router there is no internet access. I have tried wire connection directly to the modem, and it worked. I also know the wireless router is working fine due to we have phones that wirelessly connected to the router, and they are also getting internet access.

Please help!

A:Laptop wifi connected to router but no internet access

I would firstly, double check security and you typed your passkey in right.. sounds dumb but has fixed many peoples errors. Also make sure you didn't block your MAC Adrees.

If still no go, turn off the router security then try to connect.

If no go try updating the drivers.

If still no go then we got issues.

Hi All,

Have tried to figure this out from a few posts here but my situation always ends up different. I have an i-mac that i have no troubles with, it connects via WiFi or a wired connection, with which I am using to post this. I also have a fairly crappy asus netbook with windows xp that i really just want to muck around with. It connects to my wireless network fine with great signal and what not but will not connect to the internet.

What I have tried : going into command prompt to ping. I can ping my computers IP address with no problems (not sure if this even means anything just saw it on another post) but there is no Default Gateway displayed when i >IPCONFIG /ALL. Im wondering if this may have something to do with it as I saw a suggestion to PING the default gateway in another post.

dont know if im heading in the right direction or not? any help from anyone that knows what they're doing would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

I have a home network consisting of a wi-fi router with 2 desktop computers hard-wired to it and a laptop that connects by wi-fi. It works fine. All use WinXP home.

I am located within a wi-fi hotspot and would like to connect to the Internet through the hotspot rather than a broadband modem. I know I could put wi-fi PCI cards in each computer and connect that way. Problem is that only one of the computers is located where it gets a stable (but weak) wi-fi signal. The signal at the other 2 locations drifts in and out continuously.

The question is, can the wi-fi router be configured to operate my network and also serve as link to the hotspot so that I can share the Internet over my network as I would a DSL or cable connection through a modem? If not, is there any way to share the Internet connection from the computer that gets the usable signal?

Hi

I have a new Ideapad y580. My internet access is via acer liquid e smartphone.
My desktop connects via usb to the phone and I have internet access no problem.

However, when I plug the phone into my new laptop's usb, it does not detect it, so I'm trying to use the hotspot function of the phone to get internet on the laptop. 9 times out of 10, the laptop connects (easily) to the hotspot, but I get no internet access. 1 in ten times, for reasons mysterious and unknown, I get internet access instantly, and it disappears just as mysteriously.

I have uninstalled mcafee, installed the latest drivers, done ip removes, refreshes, and resets. I've unchecked ipv6. I do not have readycomm. I've done so much screwing around with it that, being a noob, I thought I broke it more myself. It did work today, tho, so I know I've done nothing too bad to it. I've rebooted the phone, the laptop, and both, with no luck.

Is there anyway to confirm if its the laptop or the hotspot/phone thats the cause of this issue?

I've done so much troubleshooting of the laptop that I have a hard time now believing its an issue with a brand new laptop, rather than my year old smartphone.

Any suggestions would be welcome. Its disheartening to have a new laptop that seems to work (connects to internet) but has no internet access.

Hi fellas!

I need some help adding a wireless public hotspot to my network.

Right now, the network is 100% wired -- 2 Win2K servers (one is the sole DNS/DHCP server, the other a file server), 1 Win2K3 server used for file serving (don't ask -- I'm not allowed to raise it to DNS/DHCP), and about 40 WinXP PCs. Everything's on the same subnet.

Here's my gear:

ISP-supplied Modem --> Cisco PIX 506e --> D-Link DGS-1248T Switch --> Servers/PCs/Printers

The modem is set in "pass-thru" mode, passing everything directly to the PIX.

The PIX is used to serve up the Internet to all the servers and PCs attached to the switch. The PIX is also configured as a point-to-point VPN with a PIX 501 at another location miles away. The PIX is also configured to allow 1 remote connection via the Cisco VPN Client -- that remote connection gets routed to the Win2K file server.

At this point, the switch is still using the default VLAN1 configuration. Everything works like a champ.

I have a new Cisco wireless AP (can't remember the model) purchased for the public hotspot. I want to set up a new VLAN on the switch and connect the AP to that port so I can segregate the internal existing LAN from the wireless hotspot.

It all sounded so simple.

I knew about the "VLAN hopping" issues, so I tried creating two new VLANS, putting all of the wired nodes' switch ports in one VLAN, and the wireless AP on the other, but that blew up almost immed... Read more

A:VLAN for Public Hotspot Can't Access Internet

You have to touch the PIX. You have to give VLAN1 and VLAN2 a layer3 gateway. Inserting them both into the same layer3 subnet gives you nothing....

You need 802.1q trunk for switch to pix. Pix will need to have two subinterfaces and two security profiles. Also, changes are you need to drop VLAN1 entirely.

i.e.

"Wired" network 192.168.1.0 /24 - VLAN 2 - PIX interface "inside.2" 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0, give it a security level of 100

"Wireless" network 192.168.2.0 /24 - Vlan3 - PIX interface "inside.3" 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0, give it a security level of 90

You can then create seperate NAT group for wireless, and wireless won't be able to touch wired.

I just got a new phone that has mobile hotspot access. I try to use it on my laptop but i can't bring up any webpages. It shows that its connected and has a really good signal but it says no network access. I have run all troubleshooters and they all say its an ethernet cable that is unplugged. I even tried to tether it instead but apparently my laptop is not compatible with tethering. Last week i used a different hotspot that wasn't a cell phone but just a box that you add data to and it worked perfectly fine. It connected right away and I could access any and all websites. I am confused as to why i could use one hotspot but not the one on the phone. I have also previously used someone elses mobile hotspot on this laptop with no problems and it was the same cell company that i use now. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have had this laptop for over a year now and this is the first time i am having problems with it but i do seem to be having a lot of problems with it in the last few weeks.

Okay, so I moved my wireless router to a more central location in my house (I got low signal in my room) and since then I've been able to connect to the network but only with limited access. Trying to connect to a webpage results in the "DNS lookup failed" error message (Chrome). My brother's computer had had the same issue, and the PlayStation 3 has had connectivity issues also, however I have been able to use my phone with the WiFi without any issues.

I've tried unplugging/turning the router on and off to no effect. Using a different router does not change the situation either. When I try to diagnose the network connection, it says that it could not identify the problem. Any ideas?

Some information:

Both computers run Windows 8
My phone is a Nokia Lumia 620 running WP8
The WiFi status window states that IPv4 and IPv6 have no internet access
My computer uses a Qualcomm Atheros AR5B125 wireless network adapter and says it is working correctly. The adapter is set to work with IPv4/6. IPv4 is set to obtain IP & DNS addresses automatically.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If your only email accounts are free (Hotmail, gmail, etc.) try this direct link. If you need help with a screen shot see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 8 or 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Identify your network if it is not obvious.

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Hey

I got an ISP that has assigned me a static IP address that is obtained via DHCP. For the connection to work properly, a MAC address of the computer connected to the Internet must be entered into the ISP's system.

I wanted to make a wireless network, so I asked my ISP for permission. They said I could only use my router as an access point and that I had to turn off the DHCP server. I am not allowed to plug in the RJ45 into the WAN port.

Now, in the 'access point' mode, can I somehow connect 2 devices to the Internet using the Wi-Fi? It seems that only the device that has its MAC address entered into the ISP's system can connect to the Internet.

If the above is not an option, what if I used the WAN port and entered the router's MAC address into the ISP's system? Is there a way for them to tell I'm breaking the rules?

In short, how do I connect multiple devices to the Internet and don't get busted?

Thanks for your help in advance and sorry for the newbie question.

Hello,

I have an Asus Netbook 1005P, running Windows 7, SP1, with Internet Explorer 11.

I am often but not always, experiencing the following issue:

When I attempt to connect to Wifi at a caf, the "Wireless Network Connection" for the Network shows "Connected", yet there is no Internet access. Placing the pointer over the Connection icon in the Notification Area displays:

"Unidentified Network No Internet Access".
(The network in question always has an SSID shown in the Wireless Network Connection list.)

This issue occurs whether I am running only the Windows firewall, or am only running the firewall that I prefer which is Comodo.

For antivirus I have Avast Pro (with its "web shield" currently disabled) and so far as this issue is concerned it makes no difference whether this Avast component is enabled or disabled, or whether I disable all Avast Shields.

When this issue occurs, there are often other customers in the caf connected to the caf wifi and also using the Internet.

I have to ask the caf to reset, or turn off and then turn back on, their router, yet other customers do not have to do this to get Internet connection!

This is the issue at whatever caf, to whose Wifi I attempt to connect.

Please help with a solution to this issue.

Hi,

So currently I do not have a router available (I have a wired connection to the internet) but I want to be able to check emails on mobile through wifi. I found a link (How to Turn Your Windows PC Into a Wi-Fi Hotspot) showing how to use your laptop as a 'wifi hotspot'. When the laptop is connected to the wired connection at work and I switch on the mobile hotspot as shown in the website, I am able to connect to the internet on my mobile through my laptop. However, this does not work at my home.

I would appreciate any help given to solve this problem.

Thanks!

The network box shows four bars and says I'm connected when I pull up the list of possible connections, but then when I troubleshoot it says, "no Internet acces".
I have Windows 7 currently.

Hello,

My laptop (an HP Pavilion dv5 using Windows 7) won't connect to my home wifi. Both my iphone and my ipad does without any problems. I've tried removing the wifi network from my laptop and adding it again. When I type in my password for the wifi it tells me there's a key mismatch although I'm 100% certain the password is correct. I kept typing it in and eventually it just tells me it cannot connect to my laptop.

I tried a system restore but my laptop wasn't able to complete it. It told me the restore failed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

About a week ago, my laptop just stopped connecting to my wifi. I have an HP Pavilion dv6 running Windows 7 (64-bit). I've had this laptop for about four years, if I'm not mistaken, and I have never had problems such as this before. It can detect neighboring connections, but it just doesn't detect my personal wifi. The router/modem is not the problem because I can connect to them with my other devices just fine (Samsung Galaxy S3/S4). I am able to connect via Ethernet cable, but of course this is a terrible inconvenience. Cuddling my router is not something I feel I'd want to do just to get some work done.

I have tried:
- restarting my router (Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Router model WNDR3400)
- restarting my laptop
- system restore
- uninstalling and reinstalling wireless drivers (originally was Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN, when reinstalled it changed to Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000)
- changed router settings (router channel, password/security options)
- manually connecting through Control Panel (SSID is not set to be hidden, but still couldn't be found)
- troubleshooting (nothing was found)
- updating basically everything (router firmware, drivers, software, etc.,)

Long story short, none of this worked. I feel as though I have tried everything I could find within multiple forums and endless internet surfing, but I am simply out of ideas at this point.
The connection on my other devices is slow, but they connect nonetheless.

Hello, new to the forum and relatively tech-newb.

I got a new DSL connection in my apartment today. Router was set up fine and most devices are working (my iPhone, my friend's laptop and my old laptop). However I can't seem to connect to WIFI with my primary laptop (Windows 7).

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the network drivers.

I tried turning off the router and turning on again.

I also tried resetting the TCP/IP stack with "netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt" and restarting. (Not entirely sure what that does but I read it somewhere). No improvement.

I can provide two ipconfig logs. The first one is from my old laptop which is successfully connected to the WIFI network:

Hey guys,

So, what i'm trying to do is create a wifi hotspot using my computer. In other words, turning my computer into a router. I'm wanting to do this so i can use my ipod at home instead of only when i'm around other wifi hotspots.

My computer is running off of a wired router, so that i can play online on my PS3 as well. I was told wifi doesn't work well with Ps3's normally so i just bought a wired router. So, the mainline internet cord is plugged into a wired router and then another line runs into my computer.

For some reason, after i make an adhoc connection, the computer is not sending the required information to the iPod so that it connects to the internet.

I've tried entering in the information into the Static tab in my ipod as well, and still only get Local Connection instead of Local and Internet.

This is what my connection looks like through the router using ipconfig /all:

Hi Cromsy,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

Unfortunately, it isn't as simple as that. You are connected to the router fine with your computer, but that tells us nothing about the ipod because wireless is off (but that's not the whole story either - you need something extra to do what you want). The following article should tell you what you need and how to do it: How to Connect iPod Touch to Windows 7 Ad-hoc Wireless Network. Although it says Windows 7, there are procedures for Vista as well (and the software will work with Vista).

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Hi there,

I have a new problem that has just cropped up today. I am no longer able to connect to public wifi or my phone's wireless hotspot. My laptop either will not connect or connect with limited access. It has connected without issue in the past and as soon as I returned home it connected to my wifi here.

What I did notice is I am connected to an unidentified network with no internet access in addition to my home wireless network:
Specs:
Acer Aspire S7 392
Windows 8.1 64 bit
Intel Dual Band Wireless 7260 (driver updated)
Disabled my firewall and antivirus

I just connected to my phone's hotspot again and here is what I am coming up with:
Attachment 57082

And when I run ipconfig/renew
Attachment 57083

Any ideas what could be causing this?

My internet currently cable internet is very very slow. I use it to check sites and play online poker. However internet has all these issues. I used my iphone to play by activating a hotspot for my laptop. The issue with this is im using at least 35mb/hour. I was told it shouldn't be using this much. I dont stream video or check much sites at all. Is there reason why its using up so much data? I have skype turned off as well. But i do have lot of processes turned on but those processes im sure are necessary in order for computer to work. I do have networx in my laptop that shows how much data i use.

Can someone tell me what i can do to make sure all my things are turned off so im just using data for online poker? Also data here is very expensive which is why i ask this and obviously i dont like playing online poker with my data plan as you use it up really easily.

So this has been going on for a few months. I have an HP DV6-7029wm laptop that will only get around 3.3Mbps over wifi. I have Uverse with the 20Mbps plan. Now here is what I have tried and nothing has fixed it.

Had Win 8.1 - Did fresh install to Win 7
Have tried 3 different versions of the Atheros 9485 Chipset Driver
Have swapped wifi adapters from daughters laptop
Disabled wifi security
Turned off Windows Firewall
AT&T swapped out my old gateway for the newest one they have

Now thinking it might be issues between my laptop and uverse gateway, I setup a Hotspot on my Galaxy S5 and used my phones LTE connection and was still only getting around 3.3Mbps. Now my phone will pull upwards of 25Mbps on LTE and the full 20 on my UVerse wifi.

Now the one that confuses me is I have a Cisco USB wifi adapter that I tried. And even with the USB adapter Im still only getting 3.3Mbps.

Any Ideas?

Hi;
Purchased a new HP Compaq laptop that's internal wireless (Intel 802.11a/b/g) capable.
I want to improve the wireless performance, particularly using hotspots where the built-in
antennas are presumably somewhat limited. Would appreciate some suggestions as to the most mobile and effective way to improve/increase signal strength/reception. I've seen everything from external antennas and amplifiers to external devices with their own cards like cantennas, etc. I've seen extenal usb antennas that claim 6db signal increases all the way up to 28db increases involving the installation of an exterior high gain amp and antenna (which is hardly portable). I'm just looking for the most portable/mobile and affordable device for increasing hotspot signal strength- Many thanks in advance for any and all replies-

Last week or so, we had a storm, and devices got unplugged. Internet service was out briefly. Wireless internet came back shortly after, but my desktop and our PS4 both can't connect to the internet via ethernet, and I can't figure out why. I've done the usual stuff: power cycle, tried out other ethernet cords, etc. Comcast has said that it's not on their end, and our wireless signal is fine, so we're clearly getting signal through the modem and out through the router. My desktop is plugged into a different modem, but also won't connect to the one attached to the router. A hard reset of the modem didn't help, whether through the button or through the configuration settings. My desktop is claiming that there's no ethernet cable plugged in, though there definitely is. I'd suspect a broken port if the PS4 weren't having the same issue. I've tried a few things on the desktop, including installing the most recent drivers for the network adapter, rolling back the driver, disabling/renabling, and just deleting it and let it reinstall one on restart, and trying to reset the IP stack. I'm posting links to screenshots of some of the command prompt commands I've tried, and the results. They vary a little bit, I've gone into the registry to enable some permissions after access was denied. Any ideas you can send my way are greatly appreciated.

Hello all. Here is my set up. I have 1.5M internet service coming into my CradlePoint CTR35 wireless router. The two devices I have are my desktop, and an iPad. When doing a speed test at speedtest.net, I find that my desktop running windows 7 gets about 1.45, and my iPad is only pulling 1.36M. I realize that isn't a big deal, but why would there be a varience between the devices? Shouldn't they be able to test out the same?

A:WIFI internet speed varience between devices

The Operating System parameter settings that determine data transfer rates are slightly different on the two machines. Differences between computers on the same LAN are normal.

With many older OS's and probably the one on your iPad these values are permanently set in the registry. They are just general values that will usually give a good data rate. Sometimes these values can be changed to improve the flow.

Starting with Vista and Windows 7, the OS actually monitored the data flow and could change some of the values to improve it.

I have two XP desktops, a Vista desktop and a Vista laptop. All will show slightly different results on speed tests to the same server.

The two XP's have the same values for all their changable settings, but one always tests about 0.04 M higher than the other.

Strangest thing happened today. A couple of my devices quit working on my wifi. I'll start with what I have.

iPad: works on wifi, but doesn't access the internet
HP Laptop: Accesses wifi, but no internet

Everything was working fine this morning. Sometime today, my iPad couldn't access the internet. Naturally, I figured the internet was down, or my modem needed rebooted. I rebooted both my modem and my router. Still no internet on my iPad. Contacted the internet provider, and they said the internet is working fine on their end. Noticed after that, my Desktop is working fine. Went back to my iPad and went into the settings and did a "forget network", and logged back onto my network. Logs in, but no internet. Tried switching to my "guest network", no internet. I can log onto my router via my iPad, and it is showing internet connection, and the clients that are on my network. Later on, I decided to fire up my work Laptop, which was working this morning, and it also can access my network, but no internet connection. I then came back to my desktop and opened my browser and went to my router page. On my desktop, I get a message:

DISCLAIMER: This is my first post so I apologize for any mistakes I make.

Hello all,

Yesterday morning upon waking up I discovered that the Wifi in my house was no longer working. It had worked fine the day before but stopped working completely overnight. At first I thought it might have been Charter Communications (My ISP) throttling the internet due to our bandwidth (My Mom watches a TON of Netflix). But the internet works fine with our two home desktops. It is the same connection but devices such as my iPhone 4, Nexus 7, iPad 3, iPhone 5, etc. are unable to get internet access. They are able to connect to the wifi and you are able to see the bars, but when trying to connect to the internet you get a network error message.

To try to fix this problem I ran measurmentlab (test for throttling), my virus scan (McAfee), and malwarebytes. I was unable to see any noticeable change in my problem.

I am hoping someone might know what I am doing wrong, but I haven't been able to find a thread that has helped me out thus far.

Thanks for reading, Nick

The spec on the receipt states it has wifi, yet we have both looked and looked and can't find any way to use it or connect to the internet. I can't even find anything on the start up menu that relates to wifi. According to the manual, the wifi button is top left of the screen, and it's lit by a blue LED. The machine is on Win XP pro and seems fine in every other respect. It's been a while since I last used XP. I am not a complete idiot, but have limited experience!

The ipconfig /all is showing no wireless connection at all, but the Xirrus showed a connection but with a "bogus" gateway. I have no idea why the discrepancy.

Make sure you have the latest wireless driver from Dell's web site. If that is already installed reinstall it anyhow in case the installed instance is corrupted.

If still not good disable encryption on the router and try to connect. If that is successful try WPA-PSK (not WPA2) encryption.

A:Laptop not connecting to wifi

You do NOT want IP Routing enabled, that's not your issue.

Have you tried disabling all encryption on the router for a test? Where in the connection process does it fail?

Hello, I'm seeking assistance to get connected with my pc to the Internet as I need it for work.. All of a sudden it has lost it's connection and when I run windows network diagnostics it reports
" there might be a problem with the driver for the local area connection".

All my wifi devices work as normal.

I have tried several reboots of the router and changed the LAN cables around but no difference.

Any help much appreciated.

Thankyou.

A:No Internet on desk top but all wifi devices work perfect.

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Can you please provide an ipconfig/all output for review by following this Tutorial?

Also, do a snip of your Network Adapters in Device Manager make sure to expand it and post it here please.

A:devices connect to wifi but puter has no internet connection

If the computer is running Windows ...

Also show ...

The short version..

From the laptop I can get on the internet and access network drives. I have assigned it a static IP of 192.168.0.113. If I disable, as a test, wireless and connect via ethernet, router assigns IP of 192.168.0.114. Same as above, I can see network drives and surf.

Problem comes with remote management s/w (I hope this thread isn't going to get pulled). I can see screen shots of the laptop system with one application, I can view and control the laptop from another app. Beyond that, nothing is working, so I'm thinking something in my network is broken. When I try to look at running processes via net management s/w, I get this: "Error 5 - Access denied". I am an admin on the laptop, and have even launched the system management tool via Run As (administrator), and I still am having the same problem.

Third program ( which I have since stopped using) would never connect after the first session where I added him to the list of remote computers, and when I try and drill down through the WORKGROUP the laptop is part of, it doesn't show up (under that program). I can ping the laptop from the main system and it can ping me. The main computer connects to an 8 port switch which then connects to the router, the laptop connects via wife to the router. Ping time to me is 128ms, to the router @ 192.168.0.1 it's 64ms.
