Your hardware settings have changed. Please reboot...

Q: Your hardware settings have changed. Please reboot...

every time I restart my laptop, I get this annoying message:

" Your hardware settings have changed. Please reboot your computer for these changes to take effect !! "no matter how many times I reboot.

What's the cause, is there a fix or only a clean reinstallation of Windows ?

I changed my mouse settings so that I can tap and drag in the control panel, but after restarting my computer, the mouse settings have that box unchecked.

My computer is this one; specs listed on site: Buy Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga Touchscreen 2-in-1 - Intel Core i5 - Microsoft Store Online

More than likely the problem lies in your mouse driver. I would uninstall/reinstall your mouse driver. Once I find a link to your model on the lenovo website I will edit this for you.

I rebooted my laptop after installing a new program and all my icons on my desktop appear as Internet Explorer icons. If I click on any of them IE opens up. I tried to do a system restore but it wont open. I have booted up in safe mode and tried a system restore - same result.

Anything I attempt to type in the command line results in IE opening. I tried a few fixes I read about in various forums but cannot resolve this issue.

Anyone have any ideas that don't involve having to type in the command prompt in the Start menu because that doesn't work either?

EDIT: Can anyone write a file I can run to fix this. The undermentioned has been suggested:

Steps to recover back all original icons:
Open run command by pressing windows key (windows logo) and R together.
Type ?regedit? and press enter.
Browse the computer system registry to
?HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk? (It may take time to reach there, so be patient)
Delete all subfolders under ?.lnk? directory but under no circumstances must you delete the ?.lnk? folder.
Close registry editor (regedit).
The shortcuts on your desktop will not work until you reboot your system

A:Icons all changed to IExplorer after reboot

There are two things that you could try for that - never tried the 2nd one but the first one runs okay as a .exe when you Save it - it may also be worth running an anti malware scan.

So, very recently I have run into quite an epidemic, that is driving my crazy. I am not an expert when it comes to computers, so hopefully somebody here can help me out.

I rebooted my computer not too long ago. The system gave me an option to boot in an earlier version of Windows, or Windows 7. I chose the earlier version as my networking card wasn't Windows 7 or Vista supported. So, my computer booted into XP like usually I have it do. This time however, something unusual happened.

Now, just note quickly that before the reboot, one of the few things I did was add another virutal drive to Daemon Tools.

Proceeding, when I had rebooted, I had noticed that 3/4 of my desktop icons were not displaying properly. Fine, I'll use TuneUp Utilities to repair the problem. As I expected, it didn't work. Now, when I check "My Computer" I have noticed that the virtual drives I had before reboot is gone, and my alternate drive (D) where I store my large files, is now E, which I suppose is the reason for the icons not displaying properly. Ok, no problem, I'll just change the shortcuts again and just deal with the fact D is now E and E is now D. However, when I launched Daemon Tools again, I couldn't add a Virtual Drive again (Just in case anyone was wondering, I was trying to get a copy of Office 07. I promise to the good lord, I did buy it, but I won't go into details).

Now, the core that Windows is stored on is now on the P drive. I thought it might be ... Read more

I recently changed out my motherboard from a board that supported only a Socket 478 1.7 GHz and USB 1.1 for one that supported a Socket 478 2.6 GHz processor and USB 2.0. The system is running XP Home.

Well after this change I booted my system the first time it would go to the splash screen and then reboot. This was followed by it going to the screen showing the option to boot in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Last Good Configuration or Normally. I tried all the options and was sent back to previously described screen every time.

My only option was to put my XP Setup disk in and do a repair to XP. This worked but my problem is that I had Office and Frontpage installed on my computer. Now when I try and access them I get the following screen: see attachment.

Is there a way to get my Office and Frontpage programs to work short of digging out the original install disks and reinstalling them again.

Thank you in advance.

Solved - I still don't know what happened, but I deleted the font that it was using (0 Buzz DNA - has been on my system for over a year and has been on prior PCs as for years as well) through the registry, and then utilized a reg fix to reset the default fonts and rebooted. That seems to have worked. I'm going to reinstall the font and see if it messes up again or if it was a fluke or something.

Hi -

I just had to reboot after two updates were downloaded and installed (iTunes and MS Security). When the computer restarted (win 7 64) I noticed in two programs so far that the font is now "prettier" than it should be. (Attached) Sometimes it's changed on folders (for example, when I browsed to attach the file, the folder had the font changed, but it's not changed when I click on say documents > screen shots).

Is there any way to change this particular default font? (Apparently restore was turned off the computer, which I'm ticked at because I didn't turn it off.)

ETA: The default fonts in the personalize > window color > advanced are all the right segoe ui fonts. So it's not changed in there.

Thanks so much,

I just installed a new motherboard, CPU, memory, and video card into my computer. I'm not looking to salvage my old OS install, and have all important data backed up, so I planned to just put the hardware in and boot off my windows disk to do a format and reload. However no matter what I do I can't get windows setup or an OS to load. When loading the installer it locks up at the windows splash screen. I've tried booting off the hdd and it does the same thing. I tried it in safe mode and it locks up before it finished loading all the files. I also tried booting mini XP off my Hirens 15 disk and that locks up at the splash screen too.

So at this point I ran memtest to see if it was my ram causing problems but it all tested ok. So anyone got any idea on how to boot off my disk so I can format and reload?

A:Changed hardware, now won't boot off hdd or disk.

What windows installation disk do you have - is it a retail disk or a disk burnt from your previous recovery partition.

Also, for a test try to install a Linux distro - maybe Ubuntu and see what happens. Even a live CD may give you some insight.

Provided your hardware funtions properly, I suspect there is a driver problem. But that is not certain at this level of info.

I recentlly had a problem with my PC where when i turned it on the HDD light would just stay on and nothing would start or come up on screen (no beeps but all fans started). I purchased a new CPU (same model and speeds) to see if that was the problem and it still did it so i got a new motherboard (same model) and again still nothing. I changed the power supply with another i have on a PC i KNOW works and its STILL the same. I even used the power switch out of the other PC as well as trying with no ram and different ram but STILL the same problem. I dont understand how that can be possible when EVER part is different from that of what is in the computer. No HDD or sata or IDE drives were connected, no cards or anything but still the thing wont start.

New/different motherboard
New/different CPU
Different Ram
Different case & power switch
NO other cards or devices

So WHY is there STILL the same problem ????????

The stats of the PC are as follows

AMD Sempron 3000+
Asus K8V-VM Motherboard
1GB DDR400 Ram

Any help would be VERY much appreciated because i am COMPLETELY stumped on what the problem is when ALL the parts are different and i cant afford to be spending any more money on the system.

Thank You

I had a stock system from Dell (an inspiron 530)

[Windows Vista]
Intel E4400
Foxconn G33M02 (OEM motherboard)
2GB DDR2 RAM (upgraded to 4GB)
160GB Seagate HDD for OS
640GB WD HDD (additional) for Storage
NVidia 8600GT

Today I recieved my new Asus P5N-D [NVidia 750i chipset, second hand came with no driver CD =S ] and installed it. It booted up and then came to an error saying that a vital system driver was corrupted (acpi.sys)
I tried many things, like repairing with CD, booting into safe mode etc. but nothing worked (I was unable to enter safemode due to more system files being damaged/corrupt)

I decided to disconnect the WD HDD and wipe the other hard drive using [email protected] killdisk.
Killdisk ran and deleted the existing Windows partition so I could install a fresh copy of Vista.
When installing Vista from the CD a status bar appears with "Windows is loading files..."
When it reaches the end it reboots into an cycle that leads nowhere.

My guess would be that it is hardware or driver related and that I may have to change some BIOS settings, but I have no idea what is wrong or how to fix it.

Thanks in advance,

A:cpu settings changed

The CPU has changed messages usually pops up on ASUS motherboards and in many cases for no reason; its a glitch that ASUS is aware of. It can also happen if the power is lost or if the system is turned off while in the early stages of bootup. Go into the BIOS setup, usually DEL or F1 and then Save and Exit to clear the message. Generally there's no need to change anything. This is not linked to Windows in any way.

Hey everyone. First, thanks in advance for any possible help that you can offer. This problem started just last night. I was browsing a few tabbed websites last night while watching TV, and I turned away from my laptop. I turned back when I noticed that IE pop-ups started firing off pretty rapidly, maybe two or three a minute. I closed out Firefox and when I started it again, an AVG search bar (wasn't there before) was on my browser. That's the only change that I noticed with Firefox. IE pop-ups were still firing pretty frequently. I've restarted my laptop as well, and now AVG is eating up my CPU to 100% almost the entire time. The IE pop-ups are not appearing anymore, but it's only been maybe a half hour since the restart, so I won't neglect to mention it. I've since used HijackThis and removed one or two things that a friend of mine recommended, but I got nervous and decided to go to a forum instead for help.

EDIT: Oops, forgot to mention the AVG settings part. Now when I open AVG from my toolbar, there's no anti-spyware, no services at all showing. I try to start a scan, but the button does nothing to initialize a scan.

I had to do an XP repair install. After doing it, all my desktop settings had changed and most of my programs were gone...or so I thought.

What has happened is that in "Documents and Settings" , a new user folder has been created "bullseye.NET1". The original folder "bullseye" is still there, along with all my programs that I thought were gone, and all of my setting, etc.

So when I boot the system, I am "Bullseye", but XP is loading to the new "bullseye.NET1" folder and settings instead of the "bullseye" folder and settings that it used to load before I did the repair install.....

Any ideas how to get XP to go back to the original folder?

Ugh this is more annoying than a real problem. I was running vista on a 512 meg ram machine that was locking up. I took out the HDD and placed it in a 1.5ghz ram machine. Of course different hardware yadda yadda yadda. The funny thing is it installed like a dream which I was not expecting. The ONLY driver it did not find on its own was a the video card and I made that change manually. Of course after all this on the next reboot it says multiple components were changed this requires reactivation. I tried to reactivate it and it failed. Sure enough each reboot it says reactivate but it never does but I am able to continue using it.
I know a rebuild will clean it all up but is there any way around this reactivation loop I seem to be in?

You are set to the highest color setting, 32bit color. You probably remember 65,536 or 16bit hi-color. You may also have a setting for 16,777,216 colors or 24bit color. In any case, right click on an empty area of the desktop, select properties, and the color depth is on the first screen, you can change the selection there.

I'm not sure where this should really be posted... if I knew then I'd probably not need to post it!

I encountered a strange problem recently and would be grateful for any comments.

An email client (Outlook Express) stopped baing able to receive email, complaining that it couldn't gain access to the POP3 server.

Exmaination showed that both the POP3 and SMTP server addresses had been set to and that the port numbers had been changed from 25 to 5103 (SMTP) and from 110 to 5101 (POP3).

This was certainly not done by human intervention so can anyone shed any light on this?

I'd assume that since 5103 and 5101 are withing the registered port range, they have been assigned to a vendor but which one. I assume some application has performed this change for some reason and really need to find out what and why!

AdAware, etc. didn't come up with much although I'm still awaiting the HJT log to see what curious stuff is in there.

I do a lot of AV system programming, which generally involves having to set my IP address for either my Ethernet port or WiFi card to manual IPs temporarily. I am having an issue on a relatively clean install of Win8 Pro that after I change my IP, when I go back into TCP/IP v4 to change it back to DHCP, it is already set to automatic... but if I right click on the connection icon and go to Status, it still has the static address. I tried to set it to another manual address and to hopefully go back in to revert, but that doesn't work.

The ONLY thing that seems to work is removing the NIC from Device Manager and then re-scanning for hardware changes where it will be automatically detected with DHCP enabled by default.

WiFi card is Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN.

Ethernet NIC is a Broadcom NetXtreme 57??.

I've got the latest available drivers, and using generic ones doesn't help. It's also on both NICs so I don't it is a driver issue.

I used PC boost thinking it would speed up my computer.Fat chance!..
Does anyone know what are the normal settings for a Windows xp home with service pack 2?
I downloaded the service pack and reinstalled it over the old one,but it doesn't seem to fix my problem.
I can't use Real Player or Windows media player. That is not a real big problem as I have other players that do a good job.
The real problem is when I access a folder that I have in my E drive with more than 7 gb in it,I am sent back to the desk top without the icons. It seems that explorer cannot handle that.I have to use the task manager to re-open explorer.
I know I should have backed up these settings before I ran PC booster!...

I'm running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit, with all Windows updates and Kaspersky Internet Security installed and updated. We suddenly started getting a phishing warning message every time my husband tried to log on to his Outlook Web Application from home.
I use Outlook that's part of Office 2010. I checked the status of SSL/TLS settings of the Internet Explorer browser, and discovered that only TLS 1.0 was checked.
I read on (published 11/13) that TLS 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 are enabled by default on Internet Explorer 11. I haven't been tinkering with these settings. BTW, TLS 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 are all checked/enabled in my husband's user account settings,
and in those of the Administrator account. It's only mine that are different, and I am the main user of this computer. What could possibly have changed these settings? I don't run anything in Compatibility Mode.
I have run a full scan in Kaspersky Internet Security, the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, and the Microsoft Safety Scanner, AKA the Microsoft Emergency Response Tool. Nothing shows anything amiss. nstat -ano shows no rogue connections on
the network.
Is the change in these settings something to be concerned about? Should we have TLS 1.0 disabled due to BEAST? I appreciate your help and advice.

Hello all, my question involves two OS's on the same P4 box, both are XP Pro SP3.

The problem started with a P2P virus on OS1. I cleared up the bug with Norton AV. OS1 can no longer access the internet via browser. Firefox and explorer both show "No Internet Connection" standard splash screens. OS1 is able to connect to P2P internet via Azureus. OS2, a clean install, connects to the internet via browser and P2P just fine. So, what gives? Which setting got changed to allow P2P and not HTTP on OS1?

Thanks in advance!

Every now and then while I'm online, the Security Settings on Internet Explorer are set to the lowest level.

AVG found a java virus (Java/ByteVerify) and removed it. I also manually uninstalled Java Virtual Machine and deleted the directory that had contained the virus.

Since then, I've run a full scan with AVG Free, AdAware, Windows Defender and Spybot S&D. None of them find anything but the security level keeps changing by itself. It doesn't happen as soon as I go online, sometimes it takes ages before the Dell sytem monitor pops up and tells me what has happened.

go to here and download 'Hijack This!' self installer. Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu and an optional shortcut on desktop.
Click on the entry in start menu or on the desktop to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

No, nothing specific, but I'd recommend that you keep your backups current and on another media. Things like this can happen and never reoccur. Then can go down permanently and you'll be glad you heeded the warning.

Just to be certain you don't have unwelcome guests, post your HiJackThis log in Security forum and have the experts check it. You might have some Trojan or other malware that escaped your AV scan. It happens.

Good luck.

When my Windows 8.1 desktop boots up, I like that it goes into the Modern UI menu first (that's
the way I have it set in the settings). I think the Modern UI looks cool.

But, when I am in desktop mode, I was missing the start menu so I tried the app. StartIsBack.

Gives a dandy start menu and seems to work excellent EXCEPT no matter what setting I change in
Windows, it boots directly into the desktop.

I might have to do a system restore to a recent backup, save the registry out, then install
StartIsBack and compare the two registry outputs for differences.

Anyone know of any other way besides the documented way (right click on the task bar, go to proerties
and tick or untick the box that says boot directly into desktop or however its worded) to get it to
boot into the Modern UI screen?

****Update*** I figured it out. Right click on the Start Orb and go into settings/properties. Doh!

This morning I found myself unable to access any https sites. I tracked the problem down to the fact that somehow my network settings had been changed to connect via a proxy. Once I deselected this option, I was able to connect again without any problems. I have been advised by the technical support desk at my ISP that this is often caused by malware, and that it means that the offenders can potentially skim important log-in information. I have done a series of scans, but I am unable to tell if the results show anything significant or not.
I have run full scans using Malwarebytes, Microsoft Security Essentials, Hitman Pro and ADWCleaner.
Malwarebytes reported no malware but one PUP - PUP.Optional.Spigot
Microsoft Security Essentials and Hitman Pro reported no threats.
The ADWCleaner log is posted below.
Is anyone able to tell me if I am likely to have been compromised in any way, and if there is any further action I should take?
I run Windows 7 64 Home Premium. My security setup is Malwarebytes Home Premium, Microsoft Security Essentials, Hitman Pro (paid version), Windows Firewall.

We can access the option and uncheck the box but as soon as you click ok, it instantly forgets and reverts back to the original settings that were in there. I've tried looking in registries for permissions, resetting IE etc but nothing seems to work.

My DVD drive is not closing as a cd broke in it.. and when booting my pc just tries to close it but it opens once again and that's what's happening till now..
Rebooted for 3 times to no use please help...

A:changed BIOS settings..:((

You need to reset your BIOS to its defaults. The easiest way to do this is to remove and replace the motherboard battery (CR2032). Unplug your system from the mains supply and carefully remove the aforementioned battery. Wait approximately 5 mins to ensure that the procedure is successful, and then replace the battery and plug your system back into the mains. Switch on, and your BIOS should be reset.

As for your other problem, if resetting the BIOS hasn't sorted it (unlikely), then you will need to buy a replacement drive. These are relatively cheap and easy to install. Just make sure that you get one with a matching interface (SATA/PATA) to the existing unit.

Several of the machines in our office have recently had the IP settings changed on local Area Connection options. We are running Windows XP.
This morning two of our machines could not connect to the internet or get email. So I checked the local area connection in "Network Connections" . I then went into "Local area connection properties" and highlighted Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and clicked on "properties".
There are 2 radio boxes at the bottom of the dialog box. One says, "Obtain DNS server address automatically" and one says, "Use the following DNS server addresses".

Somehow this option was changed from, "Obtain DNS server address automatically" to "Use the following DNS server addresses".

Nobody in our office would know how to do this. How does this option get changed without someone manually clicking on it?
This happended a couple of weeks ago to another machine. Is this just some weird glitch that happens or could this be sabotage?

A:IP settings mysteriously changed

Your in a corporate environment? I'd suggest a audit is in order. Review all activity and changes to the system since you think this occured.

Many things could have changed this, but really you need a networking person to ensure this isn't some patch problem.

No it was NOT within Word.

Are you seeing the whole screen or is it just ZOOMED up on?

Check the zoom setting in the lower right corner of the IE window.

Also check the font size selected under View, Text Size?

If this does not help, can you post a screen shot?

I'm running Vista and usually use Google Chrome as web browser and AVG free edition.

A few days ago, while browsing a window window popped up saying "Your browser is under threat of infections.Windows requires your permission to install online protection tools". Publisher: Microsoft windows. This looked suspicious to me so I only closed the window without allowing.
Since then, when I click on link the browser will open another page at random. (Same things happend whether in Chrome, Firefox or IE.) As an example, I can't attach a picture of the suspicious window. Everytime I click on the attachment button, the browser will take me to some google analytics web page.
Furthermore, I cannot access any Windows update website, nor Windows Defender. All attempt to update will generate an error (and sometimes will block my Internet connection for a few minutes.)
I Have downloaded Malwarebytes but was unable to update it for the same reasons.
I have scanned the computer with :

A:reboot and select a proper boot device also motherboard changed

It's rare that Win7 will boot with a mobo change because the hardware difference is too great. But you may be able to adjust it using this boot disk to Adjust Win7 to boot on new hardware with Paragon Adaptive Restore CD.

I doubt whether activation will hold though because change of mobo almost always causes deactivation, and once you change mobos the Product Key on COA sticker no longer will work because the hardware change is considered too great - unless you change the mobo to the same model.

It's possible that it may by a fluke hold activation, or that MS may allow it if you use Phone Activation after it deactivates and rejects the key.

First let me describe the problem:
All of my Windows Explorer settings appear to be stuck at the defaults. If I go to Tools>Folder options... and change them, the change does not take effect, and if I open the menu again, the check boxes are back to the same state as before.
When I right-click in empty space, my New menu is empty.
Also, if I try to drag a shortcut to the taskbar, or pin an item to the start menu, nothing happens.
Now this all started after removing a piece of beta software (being developed at my employer) using the add/remove programs list (my mistake). It apparently corrupted the registry, causing a bluescreen at boot. I let the system do the auto repair, which
got me able to boot again, but with the problems noted above.
My next action was to try System Restore to bring me back to a state a few days back. Unfortunately, the restore failed, and upon going back into System Restore, I found all of my restore points had disappeared (!).
I next exited Windows and replaced (after making backups) DEFAULT, SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE, and SYSTEM in Windows/System32/config/ with the copies in RegBack. After rebooting, this did not seem to change anything.

Any ideas about how I might still get my old settings back or at least be able to change them again? I was hoping to avoid reinstalling Windows.

A:Windows Explorer settings can't be changed

One important question: If I have resized my disk partitions since I made a System Image with the backup utility in Windows, will I still be able to use the image?

The native image creation tool was Microsoft's first stab at such a facility. The good news is that it's free. The bad news is that it is temperamental, unreliable and that it lacks the functionality that we take for granted with similar but mature products.
Example: it will not restore partitions where the target is smaller than the original partition. But give it a try anyway - I might be wrong.

I have installed a surveillance system that allows me to view the cameras via IE. The IE viewer works well except that every time I start it, it turns off my taskbar's auto-hide feature -- and leaves it off. Also, I have to change it back to autohide manually after the viewer is closed.

I'm looking for a way to stop this resetting of my taskbar's properties and I have no idea how.

So I'm using a widescreen monitor now after years of a 4:3 one, I have it set to the recommended 1920x1080, and I have the DPI set to medium (125%) since without it everything is way too small for me.

It looks pretty alright for the most part, but taskbar icons, particulary the ones in the bottom right, some look extremely pixelled. I read somewhere that for whatever reason Windows 7 doesn't automatically choose a more appropriate icon size in this case and just goes for a 16x16 and lets the magnifier do the rest, resulting in it looking ugly.

Is there a way to force Windows to use one of the higher quality icons for the taskbar? I don't mind if it's a third party tweaking program as long as it does it.

I changed the video settings in my BIOS to try to fix an issue, lo and behold I restart and no picture. I did a quick google search and I tried taking the battery in the motherboard out and left it out for a whole night to reset to factory defaults. Getting very frustrated. What can I do to reset BIOS to factory defaults?

Hello hello!
Well i'm guessing like most spyware attacks, I dont really know what happened!
Suddenly a load of pop-ups, and then everything I tried to open said it couldn't be opened as it was infected, and firefox said the proxy settings are incorrect.. so i've restarted into safemode with networking and changed my proxy settings to not using a proxy so my firefox is able to load up webpages.. (internet explorer isn't though)

I've downloaded GMER.EXE like it's written, but i've hit a speed bump before the programs even loaded..
it says "C:\windows\system32\config\system: The system cannot find the file specified"

I have found a path similar, in c:\windows\system\config\system

i've attached the logs from that DDS program..

Not really sure what else to do at the minute!
Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi everyone.

In the last few days I've been having problems with browser hijacks, for example when I click a link in google instead of being taken to that location I'll instead be taken to an unrelated shopping site or Ask etc.

I've also been unable to download, install and run anti-spyware - spybot S&D, malwarebytes etc. I'm now having a problem when it comes to checking for windows updates - running vista atm. And my Avast antivrius protection level keeps getting turned down to the lowest setting, which is not where I have it set.

On top of that my DNS settings have been changed from my usual to an IP address located in the Ukraine. I change it back to 'obtain server address automaticaly' but when I next start up my computer it's back to this Ukrainian IP.

One last thing, which I'm unsure if it's related or not. Recently I've been getting a little window (not web browser) pop up while I'm online, there's nothing in it at all and it's just the top section of a window with the close button etc. Next time it happens I'll take a screencap to show if my description is going nowhere.

If anyone can help me out with this it'd be fantastic. I've tried running my antivirus and it's not picking anything up so I'm at a loss really.

Here's my HijackThis log.

I don't know where to post this.
Some time ago I changed my Windows (now Microsoft) update setting to install but don't run, so that I can review things first. I got tired of MS using me for beta testing of patch upon a patch. It worked for a while, things were being pushed into my computer and several times I got an opportunity to review and install on demand. That's the way I like it.

Two days ago something got downloaded and I planned to take care of the installation today. Last night I left the computer on, running something long. I forgot to pull the internet cable. This morning, in the system tray was an announcement that MS upgrades GOT INSTALLED and that my computer was REBOOTED. Totally AGAINST MY POLICY.

This is criminal, in my opinion. I checked the security updates settings and everything is set to the default MS likes - download and run. I've seen this happen before as well -- so the question is - HOW CAN I MAKE SURE my settings stay the WAY I WANT THEM? What is changing them?

A:Auto Updates Settings Get Changed From What I Want

I don't happen to know of anything that can change your settings automatically. I know that if you visit the MS update page you will be prompted to change you settings to 'download and install updates automatically'. My best guess is that you or some other user changed the settings, either on purpose or when prompted at some point by MS or by your computer. ???

Two days ago I reformatted my computer. All went well with no problems, so it seemed. After rebooting a couple of times, I noticed that my icons on the taskbar and in the notification bar are not as they were before reformatting. They are now larger, not huge, but definitely larger and annoying to me. Yes, small icons are checked. My screen resolution before reformatting was 1024x768 True Color. It is now 800x600 and nothing I have tried, and I've tried all the suggestions in the various posts on this site, and it will not change back to my original 1024x768.

I've been at the Dell site and have the necessary drivers, which obviously are installed. My display adapter is the Intel® 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller. I only know that there is the Legacy Video Capture Devices, it's a plug and play monitor, and it's a Microsoft System Management BIOS Driver.

How do I get my resolution back to the way it was before reformatting? Webpages are not looking normal either, very large indeed, and yes I have text size set at smallest even, hoping that would help with the text but nothing is helping.

I don't think a system restore back to Friday would do much good, as right after rebooting after the final phase of reformatting, the icons and webpages were messed up. Would it be okay to attempt downloading the Dell video driver again, and if so, do I ... Read more

Well then I put my ms intellimouse in and installed the ms vista mouse software. Problem is I can go into control panel and change the speed of my mouse cursor and it's good for the session. If I log off or restart the mouse speed setting has revereted. The speed won't stay changed. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure this out! I am logged in as administrator when changing the mouse - same thing won't stay changed. Any ideas? Is this somehow a user profile issue in which vista won't let me keep the change as it might affect other users? What would I have to do to make the mouse speed stay changed?

Can I edit the registry key for the mouse speed directly?

Or do I need to mess with permissions or something - maybe a stupid question?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Dear Reader,
My problem occurred when I booted my Windows 7 laptop yesterday (HP), and saw after logging in that my desktop background had reset itself to the factory default. Also, the shortcuts present on the desktop were also different from before, and some files (documents) I had placed on the desktop were not there. The Quick Launch bar was also empty except for Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. When I ran some programs (Firefox, VLC media player) I got some screens saying 'this program is not your default program for ... ' as if I ran them for the first time.
When opening Windows Explorer, I also found the quick access 'Libraries' were all empty. I checked C:/Users/Myname and found all my files there as usual (thankfully), but something is clearly out of the ordinary. It's almost as if I have logged into a different account on the same computer, which is not the case as there is just one (with Admin rights).
Thinking this may have been the results of a virus/malware, I have run a full system scan with AVG and MalwareBytes. AVG removed a few things tagged as 'tracking cookies' and MalwareBytes removed 2 undesirable registry entries tagged 'non-malware'.
Can anyone tell me what may have happened to my computer? And how I can reverse it?
(I can check if it is done automatically, but I do not make system restoration points regularly. Which may be unwise, but I do not use this laptop very often.)
Thank you for any advice!

I noticed two changes that were made to my desktop's IE 11 browser after this patch Tuesday's updates (which is the only thing that has changed that I can think of).

First, I had a separate row for the IE11 title bar on top, followed underneath with a row for all the open tabs. This changed to having both in the same row (and the toolbars were locked all the time).

Second, a center click on my mouse on a link would open that new link immediately into a new tab. This changed by opening a complete separate browser session instead of a new tab in the open session.

These changes only started after I shut down the computer for the evening and restarted in the morning. I was able to reset the IE 11 preferences to restore normal behavior, but I can't understand how they changed on their own (especially with the toolbars having been locked with respect to item 1 above).

I don't know if the changes had anything to do with any update installed, but I did not make the changes, and no one else uses my computer. Anyone have any ideas or a similar experience? Checked for viruses . . . none found.

EDIT: I also had a pending Java Update during that time, but when I went to install it, it reported that I already had the latest version and nothing installed.

Well, I was disabling a few services as per a guide or two (such as black vipers one). And had said its best to leave the services set to "Automatic (delayed start)" set as so.

But I noticed security centre took a while to appear after boot up in the tray and so doing this fixed exactly that.

No difference in boot speed though, on average.

Recently had an issue where I got infected causing my internet settings to be changed so I couldn't access the internet via IE. It was one of those phony "security issues." It wanted me to purchase a anitspyware program and all. I could receive my email, download bank info and what not. Ran my AVG 9.0 it found and isolated 3 trojan horse virus. I was able to find that the LAN settings were changed and I switched them back, just by unchecking a checked box which is normally not checked. The questions is, is there something else I need to do to make sure I'm virus/malware free? I use malwarebytes frequently to scan my computer for malware. Ran it recently, a full scan , and it found nothing. Also use ATF cleaner frequently.

I noticed sometime last week that my time in the system tray had changed to Military (Nautical) time. I wondered at the time what could have caused it, but didn't have much time to think about it. Last night I finally looked into the regional settings and fixed it. Today I went into QuickBooks, and noticed that the date was in European format. I'm not sure what could have caused this, but it seems really strange. I am posting my HJT log, can someone look at it and see if I have something strange in my system.

Hey everyone, I just noticed something very strange today...First of all the first thing I noticed was my mouse pad. I had it set up for left handed users so that when you right-click it is treated a normal left click (for right handed users). I had a Windows Update yesterday, but when I rebooted my mouse setting hadn't changed until I logged on today.

Now the strangest thing is that I haven't downloaded any third-party programs since 2/23 of this year, but something by the name of MyPC Backup has appeared and apparently I installed that today! I'll leave a screenshot of my control panel.

I've noticed a few awkward behaviors prior to this i.e. (resolution changes-- what you'd normally see if you're in safe mode but with wallpaper, mouse clicking randomly, etc.)
But a program I've never installed is definitely most disturbing. I'll post pictures of the enlarged resolution as well.

I hope I can find out a deeper problem.

Has anybody else noticed this on their WIndows 7 Computer?
A few days ago I went to switch off my laptop and noticed the little yellow shield on the "Shut Down" button.
Today, by chance, I noticed that the Windows Updates were set to "Automatically download and Install".
This is NOT MY setting........ I've told Win7 (as with other versions) to "Check and Notify"
Now my PC is waiting for me to turn off the computer so that it can install .........I don't know what.
How can I stop it install something that I didn't ask it to?
Anybody else have this problem recently?

A:Has Microsoft Changed my update settings?

Within windows update in control panel is there any option to cancel, there generally will be at the time when updates are being downloaded but I'm not sure if there is still such an option for cancellation after download has finished and updates are waiting for a restart so they can install. It might be that the only possible method is to restart then find out afterwards what was installed and remove it then. But I suggest you try to wait longer and see if anyone can give further advice. Maybe if the updates are stored somewhere on the system before installng their files could be renamed or something s they wouldn't be installed, But I cannot be sure if this would work, it might instead damage important system files severely.
If you had a system image you could restore to that, but it would be easiest to first allow the restart, see what updates they were and remove them that way instead, most of the time updates can be removed like this, a system mage would only be needed for the few updates which cannot.
The below concerns your problem in general, and is more a guide to working out why windows update's settings changed and stopping it happeneing again. The below won't very likely be of help in dealing with your present situation where you have updates already downloaded and waiting fro restart.
On the subject of the update settings being changed I have heard of this before, but never seen it personally. I can quite imagine how dangerous this could be, updates are somethin... Read more

I tried a thousand fixes and solutions, went to numerous fixes wihtout any budge. As i was exploring this, my problem got worse, i was getting the BSOD. Some people were trying to help me (thank you). without any fixed solution. So i decided to reformat my computer (finally! haha, i don't give in until i put up a fight )

So i reformat my computer. There were 3 things that needed drivers (my LAN card; Video card; and sound device-built in with the mobo). The lan card was easy because i had the CD instant driver 2nd problem was the video card. I got stuck here.

My video card is an ASUS N6600 series.
my mobo is an ECS P4M800PRO-M3.
My CPU is Intel Pentium D 3.00GHz,
with 512MB RAM
OS: XP Pro SP2
(If you DON't want to hear the continuation, move to the 3rd paragraph after this)

Moving on, i tried numerous drivers, but nothing stuck, the effect was something like this: the computer would: restart somewhere in the middle, or after installation. It would boot up with 2 normal single beeps one after the other. Next, the windows logo would come out. However i saw the windows logo still having "lines" like the monitor had something wrong or low quality images (same as when the computer first booted after reformating.) After this, i SHOULD see the ... Read more

Hello - I share a family computer. Someone in the home previously used the computer and told me the browser (Google Chrome) had crashed while she was checking email. As far as I know, nothing new was downloaded. But this person was checking email and has a lot of spam files, so it is uncertain if a bad email was opened. I used CTRL-ALT-DELETE to close Chrome. The next time the computer was booted up, a pop-up appeared stating "A program was blocked from changing your default search settings." I initially used the Chrome options to change back to Google and deleted Yahoo as a search engine option. However today upon startup the same message popped up.

I have run the suggested scans. There were no warnings of rootkit activity from GMER so I didn't save a ark.txt file. Please let me know if I should add it. I attached as suggested by the DDS instructions. Please also let me know if I should have posted the information directly in here. Below are the HiJackThis log and the DDS.txt log. Thank you so much!

Is the other laptop the same exact model ?

If you replaced the motherboard with the same model, Windows should boot. Make sure the hard drive is properly installed.

Does the bios see the hard drive ?

If all still fails...... Re Install windows to the new motherboard.

Tuesday 1-September (hello Football Season)

My Safely Remove Hardware Icon (in System Tray - Notification Area of Taskbar) has changed the way it was working.

For 5 years, when I clicked on the Safety Remove Hardware (SRH) Icon, I got a small skinny pop-up window immediately over the icon listing my USB devices by Drive Letter. I would click which device/drive letter I wanted to remove and it would unmount ! Simple & Quick (no Fuss - No Muss). See #1 jpeg.

Recently, clicking the Safely Remove Hardware icon has not produced the normal function shown in jpeg #1. Instead - the larger Safely Remove Hardware Dialog Box opens up - requiring a series of mouse clicks to select and unmount the USB device I want stopped. See jpeg(s) 2 & 3

How do I regain the way the Safely Remove Hardware icon worked as shown in jpeg #1 ?

Thanks for any help !

Joe B!

My system has been not working right now for about a week and a half. I now have a normal desktop except for a big yellow and blue "Warning Spyware detected on your Computer!" Then in blue below it says Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer. Also after I figured out I had a problem I tried to do system restore but all the previous dates were gone to choose from. Trend Micro PC-cillian was current at the time but cannot fix this problem. Also when right clicking on the desktop I only have 3 choices instead of the 5 normal ones. I have - Themes, Appearance and settings. No desktop or screen saver. I ran Trends Highjack this and have logs. Where to I upload them?

Hi, i'm in a bit of a pickle here, changed one of the monitor/driver/display settings in Windows XP (laptop IBM R31) and my login page onwards is now completely and utterly black!

The setting I changed was in Windows, after I had logged in, I think I right-clicked on the desktop, went into Display Properties > Settings > Advanced, and I think I went into either the adapter or monitor tab as I was trying to see if I could update the driver. The monitor tab didn't give an option to update though, it just said 'Use hardware default setting'

All I can remember was the setting I changed was something to do with a driver/monitor on start-up, and it was set on the option 'system' on a drop list until i changed it to 'automatic'. Really wish I hadn't done this now!

Can't seem to find anything in BIOS to change it either, any ideas? It's all very vague I know, I'm trying to find it on my current PC but I can't find it

Really would appreciate it if anyone has any ideas. Thanks!!!
