Confused - help!
I get black screen when booting right after splash-screen w. Windows 7 (64-bit sys. in dual boot w. XP-SP3) - but the problem is only there when i have a HDMI-cable attached to the HD4670 card (with or WO my Samsung PS50C7700 hooked up at the other end of the HDMI-cable?).
With no HDMI attached to the grafics-card Windows 7 boots fine!
(EIZO-monitor S2110W on DVI all the time).

So no HDMI in Windows 7 - or what?!?

I have the HD4670 card running on the exact same hardware in Win XP-SP3 (same machine, dual boot) - and it's working just fine in XP-SP3 (WO sound on HDMI though...). What is this all about - pls help :}

System:
Asus P5Q-Pro (BIOS v. 1613), Intel E8400/3Ghz, 8 GB OCZ PC-6400 DDR-2, Sapphire ULTIMATE HD4670 (512 GDDR-3) w. Catalyst 12.2, Windows 7 Home Premium (dual boot w. XP-SP3 on separate HD's). RAID-enabled system w. 1 GB RAID-1 storage attached.

A:HDMI on HD4670/Win7-64 = Black Screen on Start-Up! (works on XP-SP3?)

Had exactly the same problem.

I did two things to fix; First I lowered the resolution to 1280x1024 and it worked, but that drove me crazy, so I bought a Intel card with 1gb of video memory, which I'm told is the minimum one should use if one wishes to use HDMI HD 1920x1080. It probably would have worked fine with an ATI as well, but with at least 1gb of RAM.

The card I bought was a Gigabyte GTX 450 and I might have been able to go lower, but since it was only $90 I figured it was worth it.

If you have a card with 1gb perhaps you could give that a try, or try lowering the resolution and (maybe), color depth.

The machine in question was Windows Server 2008 R2, but hey, it's essentially the same as windows 7.

Just my 2 cents worth.

The problem started as a HDMI-cable was plugged into my running Satellite T130-17E and the screen was closed down. From that point the notebook screen stopped working. When booting the windows start-up logo is on for a couple of seconds and just before the entering the desktop the cursor is visible on the screen. But except from these short moments there is no action on the notebooks screen. When I reinstalled the driver to the graphic card there was some short moments (less than 0,5 sec) when the screen was active.

I can use the notebook without any problems via HDMI to my TV. And when I adjust the screens brightness (FN+F6/F7) the black screen can get more back-lighted.

When I turn off the HDMI-output or plugs it out - nothing happens on the notebooks screen.

Can some of you please try to help me out as I really need my notebook to work normal again. If you can help me sort out this problem I'll be very grateful-

Kind Regards,
Jacob Lindberg

Hello Jacob

Start your notebook with HDMI cable and wait until windows is fully loaded. When you see the desktop on the TV use FN+F5 key combination and switch to the LCD back.

Can you do this?

Hi, As you are confirming that issue is intermittent, and now its working fine, it means that issue would be of display cable. The display cable would be loose. Issue can be fixed by refixing the display cable, if the issue persists then the display cable needs to be replaced. This is the only reason, I asked you in the previous post whether issue was intermittent or display view changed while moving the display lid. This particualr issue has nothing to do with the temperature. Regards,Sumit I am an HP Employee

As topic suggests, I have a new y700ISK NV80 machine that doesn't seem to detect external HDMI monitor. Monitor itself works fine when attached to my desktop's GTX970 with the same cable. Nvidia's display driver is up to date, and I updated the Intel one to one I found on this site. OS is windows 10, freshly installed as laptop is new. Oddly enough display itself does detect that HDMI cable is connected when I plug the cable into the laptop, and detects that there's no signal if I take it out. There's just no wake up signal and laptop itself doesn't show that another display is connected in device manager or display settings.

Hello,
I have a Sony Vaio T-series laptop (model SVT13126CXS) running windows 7. As of yesterday the screen is black...it doesn't display anything.
Laptop powers on (lights are on, fan makes noise, etc.).
I was able to plug an HDMI cable from my laptop to my TV and I am able to use the laptop using my TV screen (laptop screen is still black, but displays on TV works).
And the odd twist... this is a touch screen laptop, so I am able to touch my laptop screen and it makes clicks and moves cursor on my TV. (for some reason, the track pad doesn't work while its on TV display though).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you can give me steps into diagnosing the problem, that'd be great!
I live in a small college town and there is only one computer repair shop and since it's a monopoly he rips people off. Charges $95 for a diagnostic (if you get it fixed, it goes towards the repair; if not, it's $95). Charged my friend $120 for macbook charger and it wasn't even an genuine Apple product!

I was moving our Dell Studio 17 laptop and the screen went blank. I thought it did a power save or something. But I could not get it redisplay anything..no flickers, nothing.

I rebooted, nothing.

I opened up the back and reseated the ram and verified the hard drives were secure. I vacuumed out any dust. No difference.

So I tried using the HDMI with our TV and it displays just fine. I try to toggle the screen (function F8 on my laptop) and it makes no difference. HDMI is always shown.

In the past when we use the HDMI to display netflix movies on our TV, I hookup the HDMI and the laptop automatically switches to the HDMI display and turns off the laptop display. When I unplug the HDMI, it wouldnt turn the laptop screen back on. I would have to reboot with the HDMI disconnected for the display to come back.

Now rebooting doesnt not bring the screen back.

Anything else to try? are there settings somewhere forcing the laptop to not send info to its own screen? BIOS?

This laptop has an ATI card and uses the latest drivers. It does have the Catalyst control center where it detects the displays. It seems the 'unknown' laptop screen and TV (when HDMI is connected, the only way I can see the screen at this time)..but it calls them duplicates and calls both of them #1 display.

Thanks for the help

Hey Guys

I have a Gigabyte Nvidia GTX560 TI Graphics card connected via HDMI to my Asus Screen.

On the back of the screen there is an HDMI Audio out port. (No speakers part of the screen)

How do I get the HDMI Audio play through earphones? And can I in turn connect this through my computer as i do have wireless USB earphones. (Which obviously won't work from the screen port )

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have been trying to figure this out for some time.

Specifications:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
Processor: i5 760
Graphics: Gigabyte GTX 560 TI
Screen: Asus HD MS 228 21.5" LED LCD Monitor

Rayzr welcome to the Seven Forums.

With a USB headset you would be better off forgetting about HDMI and just plugging it into the computer. You have to remember that a USB headset or speakers is treated as a separate sound card and has and uses its own driver.

Hi,

This is on a loptop Meldon E6882, running windows 7, to a LED TV HD.

From a cold boot both the laptop monitor and HDMI screen show the windows starting screen .. But the HDMI screen goes blank when the login screen appears.

I have tried different screen resolutions. No Luck.

I have tried from the 'screen resolution' page to get automatically detect the HDMI - No luck

I have tried from the 'screen resolution' page to manually select HDMI. Only offers VGA or component, no HDMI.

-----------------------
I think this maybe a disabled driver as I did a manual disabling of these some time ago in order to try and reduce the boot time. I cannot recall the names of the drivers I have put into manual start (some time ago), nor have I found any info on what drivers are needed for the HDMI. The screen driver is an Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000.

Any hints? I'd like to look at some video on the larger screen...

A:HDMI works from cold boot to login screen then vanishes.

Ok, please follow this tutorial to see and upload the system specs to the forum. So we know what components there are in that laptop. (As I cannot find anything by googling the name you gave)

Then we can talk about drivers.

SORRY--I ORIGINALLY TITLED THIS AS AN HP 35. That was two computers ago, this one is a 15. HP Notebook - 15-f111dx (ENERGY STAR) Not sure this is where it belongs. The first 50 results of what I thought was a narrow Google search had nothing matching this, and a lot of lockup after password results. While working on the computer, including actively typing, the screen will "blink" black for at least a full second, then come back to wherever I was before. Then a few seconds later, it blinks again and the password screen appears. The machine is well-ventilated and it not doing any processor-intensive gaming stuff. It is similar to a screensaver re-login. Pressing enter after the password returns me to the same place almost instantly. This has continued even after I have done at least two each, virus scan (Avast), malware scan (Malware Bytes), and spyware scan (SuperAntiSpyware). There's also plente of gigs of space left on the hard drive, 8 gigs of RAM, and Task Manager says there's still unused memory and the processor is somewhere less than 80% occupied. So what gives???? Thanks!

Hi everyone!

Recently I bought a new Full HD TV, it's a Samsung LE40B530. I'm trying to get this TV connected to my Compaq Presario CQ50-100ED laptop from hdmi output to the hdmi input on the TV. The videocard is a GForce 8200M. The latest drivers are installed.

The problem is that when I connect the two, the laptop screen goed black and the TV says 'No signal.' Pressing the FN F4 does not work. Also I'm not able to get back into vista on the laptop. The screen stays black even after unplugging the HDMI cable. I have to hold the power button to switch the laptop off. Not a good thing.

Any tips or advice?

Thanks!

Hi all,
(I'm not sure if this is in the rigth section of the forum.)

Today i started my notebook up when i came back i saw my screen was stuck and there ware collored stripes over my screen.

I thought it was some kind of error and i couldn't do anything with my laptop.
So i plugged it out so it didn't had any power source.

Now when i put it back on the screen stays black.
The On lamp burns.
The Cpu lamp burns for a few secunds and goes out.
I still can hear the fan working.
When i put a CD in the driver the Cpu blinks a few secunds and stops.

The Point is that my screen stays black mather what i do i searched arround on the net and i don't think it has to do with the blacklight.

I don't kno what to do.
My last hope is that (i think its stuck in "sluimer mode" kind of stand-by)when my battery goes low it auto shuts it self down.
And be back to normal.

But i want to hear what you think.
Or mybe some 1 els herer had same problem and solved it.

A:Notebook Black Screen

When you say be back to normal do you mean the monitor comes back on, or the signs (as in like fan sounds, etc.), you getting from the laptop go back to how it would usually operate. Also if you could possible tell of any previous problems (no matter how slight the case) you may have had with you monitor also what it was that you were doing before you left the laptop before coming back to it because you said "i started my notebook up when i came back i saw my screen was stuck".
This information may more help to someone being able to have a better idea as to what the problem may be. As for me the most i could probably say (never really worked on a laptop ) is that you take it to a repair station and have it looked at.

I hope that you get a quick response as to your post and the problem you are experiencing

Hi, I just got my Thinkpad P70 4k with Nvidia Quadro M3000M graphics this week, running Windows 10 Pro.I have run into a lot of issues regarding HDMI output - switching to discrete graphics disables the HDMI output and i can no longer change the resolution or scaling (nor does the Nvidia Control Panel show up). In mixed graphics mode the HDMI output works, and i can change the resolution  but after waking from sleep the image only shows on the external (HD display) connected over HDMI.I have to disconnect the HDMI cable to get video on the laptop screen and the reconnect it to get video on both screens.I suspect that the Intel Graphics runs the Laptop Screen in mixed graphics mode, in the Nvidia Control Panel I can only control the external display.    I am running the latest BIOS (2.03) and updated the Nvidia Drivers directly from NVIDIA (10.18.13.6256).  On another note I also had a black screen issue after updating the BIOS to 2.03 (no idea what version came installed) everytime i rebooted and had to disconnect the Bios Battery twice, but that somehow (??) got resolved after taking out a SD card from the Card Reader.

Well, I have changed a few Toshiba Notebook LCD's, and some of them where not even broken, just misconnected or someother causes. But I would recommend sitting down, and removing the screws on the sides of the screen panel and poppin it out and taking a quick look in the back and bottom of the screen to make sure everything is in order.

If you see picture when you boot. I would recommend checking the bios settings. Try looking for video related options.

i have this problem with my Gateway notebook, and i have a few questions about my situation.

it started a few months ago. one day while my laptop was on the screen just went black. the laptop was still running, the screen was just showing black. i could pull the battery and unplug it to shut it off, and then when starting it up again the screen would be ok for a few seconds before going black again.
i was thinking i could just take it into the computer store because it was still under warrenty, but the problem is i have some "stuff" on this laptop i dont want anyone else to see. since i couldnt see the laptop to do anything with the "stuff" on it, i just stored it away and used my desktop computer.
a couple weeks ago i thought i would try the laptop and now it works, the screen was good. i figured there was a chance it could go black again so i thought this was my chance to remove the "stuff" that i didnt want to be seen. i know with the laptop there is a System Restore which will restore the computer to an earlier time, so simply deleting the "stuff" wasnt going to completely remove it, right?
so instead of a System Restore, i used the CD that came with the laptop and did a System Recovery. this puts the laptop back to the original settings that came with the laptop when i bought it from the store. the only programs on the laptop now are whatever was on it when i bought it from the store. in checking the System Restore which rest... Hello,

My laptop's screen goes black when I connect it to the TV via a HDMI cable, however this is completely new as it used to work fine. I can still watch things on my TV but I have to look at the TV screen where text comes up quite small and it makes it hard to do stuff, so I was wondering if anyone would know why my laptop's decided to start doing this, and how I can get it back to both screens working at once? The volume and everything else works ok, it's just a bit annoying is all!

I have Windows Vista Home Edition, not sure of the details, but I got it just when Vista first came out.

Thanks!

Ok so this first happened about 2 weeks ago. I unplugged my Gateway Notebook to move it downstairs and right when I unplugged it the screen went black(not completely I could still faintly see my desktop. I restarted the computer and it started up fine...and it was fine for the next week or so, and then it did it again when I unplugged it. Restarted and it was fine. Last night I did it and it happened again but this time restarting it didn't work. I went on my parent's computer to go to the Gateway support chat room. The guy helped me I hooked it up to an external monitor and uninstalled some drivers and then downloaded some new drivers and he said I was done and i unplugged and it was fine. About 2 or 3 hours ago I unplug my notebook and boom, black screen and restarting doesn't work. I go on the chat support again and the lady basically just tells me to do the same thing as last night and it worked(or so I thought) I end the chat and I unplug to go move it from the external monitor and boom black screen again. I am now waiting in queue for the chat room again, and i'm hooked up to the monitor again and i deleted the drivers again. But I don't want to do this again if it's not gonna help. Any ideas instead of having to send it to Gateway for them to fix/delete my hard drive?! PLEASE HELP!

Hi everyone

I have a HP MODEL: DV6 1131ea. The other night when I turned it on it would not boot and all I got was a blank screen.  I cannot boot into the Bios.

I have been on the HP Website and tried the following:

1.  Removing battery and cables and pressing down the power button for 1 minute.  Then, replacing cables and booting.

2. Holding down the Windows key PLUS the B key and then the power key for 1 second and allowing the machine to boot into bios and restore the bios.   Those were the details I got some the HP website on my specific machine.

So, far nothing has worked.  I have heard it could be a problem with the motherboard.

Does anyone have any ideas?  Is it possible to boot into the BIOS from this situation?

Many thanks

Jake Shiraz

NB: In case anyone is thinking how I know the BIOS is corrupted it has a light which flashes intermittently next to the Capitals lock and another at the top right-hand part of the keyboard.

Hey all,I purchased a new Omen Laptop about two months ago.About one month ago I noticed a thin horizonatl black line appear at the top of the screen, reaching from one side to the other. It has since slowly moved down the screen so it is just inline with the x on the close button of a full screen app. I have taken a screen shot to share with you but it doesn't show up in the screenshot, which makes me think it more of a physical problem. Has anyone come across this issue before, or does anyone have an recommendations? Thanks,Ben

Product name: HP Pavilion DM4 Notebook PCProduct number: LS721EA#ABU I tihnk it is 64-Bit but I am unsure. I upgraded to Windows 10 about 4 months ago.  Hello, I have an HP Pavilion DM4. When I tried booting up this weekend I got a black screen with a flashing white line in the top left hand corner. In the bottom left hand corner I had a message "Press Esc Key for the Start Menu". I tried a hard reset and the caps lock LED button comes on. I have since run the system diagnostics test and the Start-up Test, Run-in Test, Memory Test and Tune up failed. The description for each one is Memory module. The error code is as follows: Tune Up: 64RHWW-5MV85J-XD6V5G-401MO3All others: 64RHWW-5MV85H-XD6V5G-400503 The hard disk abd battery tests passed. I reseated the memory module but that hasn't made any difference (It was positioned correctly when I took it out) Can anyone recommend what I should do next? ThanksSimon

Hi all you spotties out there...
can someone help me,please!?
my sons notebook,an HP G62-b 10sg with core i3,amd mobility 5470g running win7 ultimate has a heat-problem,shutting down frequently when gaming.I tried to clean it,could not get to ventilator cause I can not disassemble/dismantle the machine without destroying it(thank you HP!).well, long story short - I just cut away the plastic covering the vent, cleaned it with vacuumcleaner.so far so good.I installed win 7 on clean formatted hdd.installed all drivers needed.started up the da.. thing but the screen stays black although the system-sounds are playing (that little "I finished starting bleep").
tried everything.no way the display would light up.
installed os again,on oncemore formatted hdd,now it`s telling me that it can not identify the grafics, stops installing driver(from HP homepage) and any other driver (Lan,touchpad, sound) is,in that notebooks "mind" already installed (they are not,it was all clean cause formatted)...
if I just install win7 and nothing else everything is fine, well it`s not - because I can not access internet and video playback stutters.but the display lights up.What am I doing wrong?or is the thing just broken down due to heat? warranty was void before I cut the vent,as it is 2 and a half years old.
any suggestions,anyone?
(hope you get what I am trying to say,I´m from germany and not a native speaker/writer...)
Thanks in advance

A:Notebook screen black - sys sounds playing

Did this laptop come with Windows 7 Ultimate or did you purchase the OS and thus installed it?
Best bet for you is to get the HP Recovery CD or DVD for your model it will have all the drivers needed for your model. Basically it will install the HP Factory Windows 7 along with everything that's suppose to go with it. This process takes a few hours to run.

So contact HP Tech support tell them you need the Recovery CD/DVD for Model HP laptop. There is a cost for this so be aware. Then you won't have these issues saying graphic driver stopped because you don't have the correct drivers etc. The HP recovery will have all those installed.

Also with every HP system you get recovery with it but it's on the HD in it's own partition so whatever got installed might have blown out that partition and now you have an issue.

Hello,

My neighbor brought over her computer this morning saying that she is unable to boot up her computer. After pushing the power button, the DOS looking window pops up that says we can push F2 for Setup but then goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor (for about 3 blinks) and then goes completely black.

We've tried to boot in safe mode, but we still get the same black screen.

The computer is a Gateway notebook with an Atom mobile processor and Windows XP Home installed.

Apparently there had been a virus on the machine that she had cleaned off. They had issues with Internet Explorer failing to bring up a web page on their primary account, but when we created a new account, IE worked just fine. She successfully used the computer for about 24 hours and is now having this "black screen" problem.

Any help would be great!

A:Gateway notebook boots to black screen

Have you checked the Gateway support page...for any data relative to similar problems?

System model?

What makes you think...that the system is now clean...if IE was not functioning properly...after stated "cleaning"?

Not a lot of info here1) Can you access the BIOS /CMOS screen2) IF yes can you move around the screens and or see that the system has recognised the hard drive. Does the system make any strange noises? How long does it take to switch on ?Is it getting over hot? What happen eventually?Do you can you power it off easily or do you have to hang on to the power button to get it to go offWith it powered OFF!Have you tried removing the hard drive?Reseatting the Memory?Removed the Optical drive? If no then try this below.  Try using a boot DVD/CD to establish if the system will 'get out of bed' Or a linux boot flash stick you can then see if the system is viable and or if the system can access the Hard drive(s) It will also allow you to recover the data transfer to a flash stick.

Wondering if someone can confirm if I have a mobo problem.
My monitor is showing a black screen all the time.
It changes from Orange(Stand-by) to Blue(Active) at all the correct times.
This includes at boot up, moving the mouse or pressing a key to get out of stand-by.
I have tried different video card in a diferent slot.
I have tried a different monitor.
I have removed the battery from the mobo to clear the CMOS.
Thru network, I can access the hard drives and files that are shared.
Seems the PC runs fine except for no picture.
I can even hear the start up tune when windows kicks in.
Unfortunately the mobo does not have it's own VGA so I have no choice but to try a card.
It all points towards mobo but was hoping anyone out there might know something else I can try.
Cheers everyone for looking.

A few days ago I was using my computer perfectly normally when I started up a game. If it matters, the game that I was playing was "Rust." I have a decent computer with a Radeon 7870 graphics card and can run pretty much every game fine on high settings. All of a sudden, the game got extremely laggy and random chunk of green purple, red, and more started flashing around the screen. It was completely random and I can't think of any specific action that may have triggered it. Navigating my way through the "fog" of the randomly colored pixels, I ALT TABBED and restarted my computer. I turned it back on, Windows 8.1 is loading, and right when it's supposed to hit the login screen, nothing happens. It goes black. Nothing works.

Important information:

- I don't have a disc.
- Windows 8.1.
- I overclocked my graphics card, Radeon 7870, a week or two before this happened. I'm wondering if this caused all this.
- I can't revert back to a previous state (in the advanced options area when the computer starts up) because it gives me an error and says there was a problem.
- Nothing happens on the black screen. It's completely unresponsive. CTRL + ALT + DELETE doesn't do anything.

PLEASE HELP?! I've looked far and wide all over the internet and I just can't find anything that helps. I've also been trying to figure out a way to un-overclock my graphics card and set it back to default settings, but that seems impossible as well. Any information that you can provide would... A:!HELP! Black screen after loading Win. 8.1, nothing works. !HELP!

From your description of the your problem and the timeline, it may be that you have 'cooked' your graphics card.

The simplest way to test this is to try your computer without the video card - using the on-board video if your computer has this is simplest -  or by substituting another known good card for the Radeon that is in your computer at the moment. Since you are only interested in a substitution test, almost any video card will do. If you don't have one you may be able to borrow one off a friend.

If your computer starts working with a different video source then you can be fairly sure your Radeon is a late Radeon. If of course you still have no video when you try this post back and include details such as make and model on your computer.

when i turn on my computer everything works but my monitor stays blank even with 3 different video cards i tried with...,also thought if it was my monitor so i went to my bros computer and try it but nope even my bros monitor stayed black...so it has to be the motherboard itself...........my fans, harddrive, and whatever works.....mouse(optic) works but keyboard doesnt seem to get any signal...tower light stays green but when turned on, it turns to orange jes like the monitor

i also try taking every card out...sound card, graphic card, and my harddrives(since it was the harddrive that i change the configuration in) but nope still doesnt work

i google my probelm and tried everything and still no luck

If not, can you get the motherboard model and check the manufacturer's website for a manual? Not sure if you fried your chip, but it could be....or it may just be the system is buckling because it won't accept the overclock.

Hey guys

Trying to fix an issue with the mrs' Dell notebook; which is an Inspiron 15z 5523.
1st thing - it's out of warranty, so need to try a self-fix if possible, if not, I'm sensing it may be time for a new laptop for her so any tips on data recovery will be appreciated down the line.
Also worth mentioning that this has come about a couple of days after installing Windows 10 - unsure if that's related, but worth a mention.
The issue is that no matter what, we're faced with a blank black screen, with no backlights or LED anywhere. It's now started beeping 3 times in succession which as far as I can tell from the troubleshooting (here) is a system board failure.
For now though, I've done the following:

Allowed the battery to drain and try running on AC power
Reset the motherboard (using the paperclip/reset button method)
Troubleshooted using the above link
Confirmed that it is out of warranty

The main priorities are trying to get this working again and if not, getting the data from the laptop to allow us to get it onto a new one if necessary.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jesse

A:Inspiron 15z 5523 Notebook - 3 beeps, black screen

Yahooo!! Sorted!!!

Thanks guys for all your help! It's really appreciated!

A few things that I noticed. In terms of getting it restarted when the three beeps were happening:
1. There were no clear "this will always work" instructions. Doing the right thing will work sometimes and not others.
2. The most consistent method I had which resulted in not just clearing the beeps, but a successful boot was as follows:
a. Remove CMOS battery.
b. Either Remove main battery, or move the little switch under the keyboard (to the left) into the off position. This just disconnects the battery.
c. Press and hold the power button to drain the capacitors (Now that the cover is off, this is just a tiny silver button...so you'll need a screwdriver or something to easily press it....preferable an electrical screwdriver!)
d. Leave the computer in this state for some time. At least 10 minutes, but if you're having difficult, do it overnight. I've no idea why this delay should be necessary, especially after draining the capacitors, but it seemed to help make it more consistent.
e. Put the CMOS battery back in, and either put the main battery back in or slide the little switch under the keyboard back to on.
f. Again wait 10-15 minutes. I've no idea why this seemed to help, but it did. Perhaps the CMOS battery does something after being reinserted.
g. Do NOT connect any USB drive. Inserting a USB drive triggers a startup in this case. Instead you should just c... Read more

Hello there. I have a dv7 notebook with Win 7 Home Premium installed on it. Everything is running fine, except a couple of days ago the notebook began to take too damn long to boot up when restarting or just when powering it on.

I noticed it gets "stuck" on a black screen, just like a blank DOS screen, for about 2 minutes before booting up Windows.

I have tried downloading new BIOS from HP website, resetting the BIOS settings, changing the boot order but nothing really works. It always stays on the black screen for around two minutes and then Windows boots up normally. No text is shown, nothing at all.

Does anyone has any clues on what it could be?

Thanks!!!

A:Notebook stuck for 2 mins on black screen before booting up

You may have a driver problem.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode? If your computer starts OK then, we can start investigating why it's not starting normally.

To get into Safe Mode tap the F8 key at startup. In case you're wondering, when you run in Safe Mode you're not loading drivers.

I've installed Windows 8.1 on a Medion Akoya P6634 sporting a Intel HD3000 and a GeForce GT630M.

I had to disable Windows Update because the notebook's screen becomes black after it performed some updates.
Hooking it up to another screen via HDMI works but I can't activate the notebook's screen anymore.

So I tried installing the latest Intel 3000 HD driver manually (like described here https://communities.intel.com/message/248260). It says that the latest display driver is already installed.
When I install the Intel 3000 HD driver via the executable the screen becomes black after hearing the "device disconnected" sound.

When it happened the last time all I could do was switching to safe-mode and disabling the Intel HD 3000 altogether.

Installing the latest GeForce-driver has no effect whatsoever. All the time the notebook's display is running at a 1024x768 resolution (native resolution is 1366x768).

Do you have any ideas what else I can do besides going back to Windows 7?

Bit unusual computer you have there. Could look at BIOS settings and see if there are graphics settings that you can change. Look for something like dynamic or discrete.

I have quite a few problems with my laptop that have been happening since day 1. My laptop screen constantly turns black at night -- this happens while the power supply is plugged in and when it is now. The notebook will be on but the screen will turn black randomly and then come back on at random times. It is very frustrating when working on a project. Also, the screen will just start blinking hysterically. THis happens whether the touchscreen is on or off and whether the bluetooth is on or off. At times, it will just freeze when I am trying to log back in. It will keep spinning and never log back in. I really need help with this issue as I've tried everything. I am in the IT industry so I have a great deal of knowledge with technology. I just can't deal with the screen randomly turning black and hysterically blinking. Anyone else having this issue or know how to fix the issue? Thank you.

I've seen other people report this problem on other sites, but the threads seem to just dead end, and searching on this site keeps throwing an error for me.

I recently installed Win7 (build 7100) on my old Dell XPS 400. At first, it ran fine. A few weeks or months later, however, it just stopped booting properly. Specifically: it reports that it did not shut down cleanly, and gives me the various safe mode boot options. No matter which I choose, I get the Windows 7 startup screen (with the four fireflies combining into the logo), and then a black screen in which only the mouse works. I've left it up for hours like that, with no change.

I've tried booting from the Win7 CD I made, but there are no system restore points, and the repair feature is unable to fix the problem. (I've also tried UltimateBootCD, but I can't seem to find a way to format the partition I have Win7 on, which means I can't reinstall Win7 there from the CD.)

It may have shut down badly, indeed, but I don't remember. (I do have power outages on rare occasions.)

Win7 is installed on its own HD partition, about 30GB in size.

I do browse the web on this computer (Firefox or Chrome, if it matters).

A:Boot to black screen; only mouse works

Download Killdisk and use that to format the HDD that Windows 7 is on. Burn the ISO image using Imgburn to burn it to a CD or DVD.

Then you should be able to install Windows 7 again normally. I hope you aren't trying to install the drivers from Dell as they are probably not support for Windows 7 yet.

I built a custom pc recently and I decided to get Windows 8.1 because it was actually cheaper than Windows 7 ($110 vs $159). I built the pc and installed Windows 8.1 no problem. Rebooted after install no problem. Updated my graphics card drivers (tried playing minecraft and it said I needed to) and rebooted, no problem. Then, the next day when I turned it on, it booted onto the start screen, before the login, I clicked to continue to login and it went black. Everything but the mouse. It would flash on and off every little while. I could move the mouse off the screen to the right and bottom, but not the top and left. I rebooted, same thing. One more reboot, and the splash screen is different . It says "Please Wait" on top of the loading circle thing. It says Recovery. I click advanced settings and continue to windows 8.1. It reboots and works fine. Until next time I turn it off and back on.

I've googled it and came up with people who got this after upgrading from windows 8. And they haven't been able to get in at all. I'm not too worried as it works, although I would like it to work as it should.

These are my specs, if needed:

AMD FX-6300 6-Core 3.5 GHz
ASRock 980DE3/U3S3
2x4GB G-Skill Ares DDR-3 1600mhz
Gigabyte Geforce 650 Ti
Windows 8.1 64-bit (obviously)

not sure what else is needed

I recently got a used computer from my cousin that I am trying to set up for my kids. When I turn it on there is only a black screen. It shows nothing. Not a cursor or anything. You can hear the computer start up (the fan, etc) and the green light comes on. I tested the monitor on another computer and it works just fine. My next guess was maybe video card? Bought a new one and inserted but the same happened. I was hoping that maybe after I inserted it I could go to a boot screen and instruct it to install from CD before trying to load Windows by typing f8 or f12 @ startup. No go. Total black screen still. Not even a cursor. It's a dell. I'm not sure what year but relatively new (within the last 10 years). I think Window's XP Home Edition. The inside looks clean. No noticeable sign of damage.

Thanks for your help.

Hey all,

I'm kind of freaking out since I have a final due in eight hours and my laptop went haywire on me. I've searched this forum and have tried some fixes to no avail.

Earlier today, I was working on my Dell M70 laptop (FX1400 video card) and I was connected to a monitor via VGA. Suddenly, the screen froze and an error msg came on concerning my driver.

I rebooted the laptop only to find my startup screen with vertical hash marks. The Windows XP load screen was fine but after that it went to a black screen. I rebooted in safe mode and this was this colorful pattern in the background (look like horizontal tire marks), then I uninstalled my video card in device manager, cleaned out the driver, and reinstalled the latest driver.

No success.

Can somebody help me out or point me in the right direction? I would appreciate it very much. Thanks.

A:Black Screen, Matrix Code, the works...emergency

If the video corruption occurs on the BIOS splash screen or during the Windows splash screen then you have faulty hardware/video card and you'd have to replace that to resolve it - no quick fix.

Hi,

Can you boot up into the options menu

when you reboot, tap F8 repeatedly until the option menu shows up:

Arrow up to "Last Known Good Configuration" hit enter, see if you can reboot normally.

If you cannot reboot normally, boot back into the option menu again and this time arrow up to "safe mode with networking"
see if you can download and run the following programs

Whenever I boot Windows 7, after it starts, instead of showing the login screen, it show a black screen with a movable cursor. Now, I can go into safe mode, and it works, but, hell, I can even put my password on that black screen, press enter and it will go into Windows and work just fine. But the thing is, it's supposed to show the login screen, not just a black one, so I'm a bit worried of what might be causing the problem, and whether or not it could expand into something worse. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello all, my BSOD problems are thankfully a thing of the past now! However, I have a new issue that has been quite confusing to me. When I log in to Windows normally, I'm presented with a black screen and a cursor. Through findings of my own I've found that it's because windows explorer is failing to launch. Upon trying to start it by opening the task manager via CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and opening a new task, I'm presented with an error code that tells me windows explorer failed to launch (I believe the code was something like 00x000002...I'm currently at work and don't remember it exactly off the top of my head). So I attempted to restart in safe mode, and that worked perfectly fine. I ran my virus scanner (Kaspersky Internet Security) and found no threats. I then attempted a system restore, and that failed to complete for an unknown reason. The next time I tried logging in to windows normally, it gave me the black screen again. After some frustration, I gave up on trying to fix it for a while and shut the computer down. After turning it on, however, I was able to open windows explorer manually through the same method I mentioned earlier, and it actually opened this time. I ran the sfc scan through the administrator's privilege command prompt, and was told that there were files that were corrupted but could not be repaired. I don't have a windows CD and am not sure where to go from here. Should I start my computer on safe mode with networking... Read more

Here is the CBS log I mentioned in the OP. Not sure which information is relevant, but I had to trim most of the document and left just the most recent stuff from the very bottom.

Another note is that upon starting in safe mode, I received a message saying that System Restore did not work, and that an unexpected error occurred while the computer was attempting the restore.

So my 2 year old satellite screen appears "dead". The system boots fine (XP) and I can see everything when attached to external monitor.

Is this video connection? screen? other? where should I have this repaired? THanks.

A:black screen - Toshiba notebook - boots fine with external monitor

Tricky........

Are you sure that you have not accidently switched to mode where your laptop is only displaying to external monitor. you should find instructions in handbook. See if both external monitor and Main screen show up on display properties, make sure you know how to switch back to your external monitor if it does not automatically find and display on external monitor first.

if the default monitor montor setting is not the problem then your screen has failed and you will need to have your screen replaced. if you still have warranty then send it back to manufacturer or where you purchaced it from.

No warranty? then take to local computer shop, (shop around dont just go to PC World or major outlet)
Laptop displays are very expensive.

two blinks is corrupt BIOS. Connect the power adapter to the notebook and the hold down the Windows key and the B key at the same time. It may take a full minute or so of holding down the two keys, but you should  see an onscreen message responce that says that it is recovering the BIOS.

Firstly I'm on Win7 64. Over the last few weeks I've noticed that after starting up my laptop, and logging in just fine, the screen would go black for a couple of seconds-- my cursor would appear and I could move it around, but the screen would be black. After 10 seconds or so, the Win7 GUI would load just fine and there I would be.

I restarted my PC at 5AM this morning and it did the same. All I did at that point was send an e-mail via Gmail and shut it down again. At 2PM I went to startup my PC and everything went as usual except the PC never left that black screen with the responsive cursor.

I searched here and found that problem many times, but with one difference-- my PC starts fine in Safe Mode.

I used Advanced System Care to fix some registry errors and am currently running a Malwarebytes full scan.

It might be worth noting that I recently installed Batman: Arkham Asylum and as it was frequently crashing, followed some advice to enable everything at startup, which I did, fixing my game problem. That was around the time the black screen first started showing up, and I assumed it was a result of more things taking place during Windows startup.

Thanks in advance.

Hey guys.
I discovered that besides VLC player on my laptop all the other video player are not able to work properly (meaning,, Windows Media Player 12, Cyberlink PowerDVD12 and WMPC are able to play only the audio, but not the video, it's just just black screen),, BUT with VLC is no problem playing any video format!! The thing is that I didn't have this problem previously,, all my video players were able to play all the same video files, which they can't now!
I have the latest AMD Radeon HD video drivers installed. As I mentioned I didn't have this problem before,, with a previous versions of the AMD graphics card driver. This happened to my laptop a while ago already,, since I have this problem I updated my video drivers 5 or 6 times at least, and no change so far !!!
Why am I assuming that the cause of my problem is the graphics card driver is, for ex. when I had just re- installed my windows (fresh! from Windows 7 to Windows 8),, the video playback was working, while the graphic card was running on the drivers provided by Microsoft! as soon as I am installing the driver for my model of AMD Radeon graphic card I am staring to have the problem.
As I mentioned I have the problem for some time already, during this time I re-installed my Windows couple of time, plus I even changed the version of the windows (7to8), for the moment I have the last version of video driver installed, I haven't installed ANY codecs
Can anyone help me with this pleas?

You may simply require a codec (code/decode) pack to enable video in other players, have you got any codecs installed ?

If not you could try k-lite codec pack or CCCP seem to be quite popular
You may also require matroska codecs for playing HD contect like .mkv files or HD .mp4

I've gone through the usual searches, but the one thing that is different here is that the netbook still works. I can hold a mini-mag lite up to the screen and it everything is still working.

I did try to update the bios, I don't know which version I have, but I figured it couldn't hurt. My battery is also stuck in the "won't charge because I let it go down too far" status. The new bios was supposed to fix that as well. New version is 3310. I made a bootable flash drive (I think, I'm not sure if I did it correctly as I've never done that before) and attempted to update the bios. It's not doing what Acer and just about everyone else with a how-to says it should be doing.

After about 30 seconds, it just stops booting and starts. Perhaps it had updated the bios, I'm not sure.

But like I said, the computer is still working fine, just no backlighting on the screen so that you can see it. Make sense?

Anything I can do to see if there's just a loose connection or a solder joint I can redo? Thanks!

I have scanned through the other posts and the closest thing that I could find to my problem seemed to involve a video card going kaput. I'm just hoping maybe one of you can confirm this for me before I take my pc up to the repair shop and they try to sell me something I don't need.

So, here's what is going on. Yesterday my Dell Dimensions (2500 I think?) was working just fine. I noticed the fan was running for quite some time so I got up to check and just as I suspected virus scan was performing a scan of my system. After the scan was completed I exited out of virus scan and figured the fan would stop running shortly. A few hours later I notice the fan is still running, so when I go to check my pc all I see is a black screen. The button on my monitor is flashing between yellow and red, so I restart my monitor and the test page comes up. It says my monitor is working and to check pc connection. After that I manually restart and the windows logo comes up but then we're right back to that black screen. I am currently in safe mode with networking which is obviously working just fine.

Now -- about two weeks ago the monitor that came with this system died. I snatched an older monitor from a spare pc in the house and attached it to this system. I don't know if that has any bearing at all on the events that have taken place but I wanted to let you know that I had infact made a change recently.

Thanks in advance for your help.

This is my wife's laptop. The problem started recently, about a week ago When she starts the laptop, often (but not always) there is the hp logo, and then the screen goes black. It does not always happen, and sometimes it happens when the laptop has not been used for a few hours.

The screen seems to wrok okay in safe mode, bit has problems in regular mode. The laptop is about 4 years old, came with Vista, but now has Windows 7 premium home edition. I reinstalled windows 7, but the problem has not been resolved.

Grateful for your advice. Should this laptop be discarded? Repairs are quite expensive in Switzerland, and rather than spend good money on an old laptop, I would prefer getting a new one, if an easy solution can not be found. HP G60-235DX Windows 7 (32 bit), 3GB RAM, plenty of free HD space.

Many thanks.

The laptop startsup into OS and can stay on for a good 10 mins without freezing if left alone. When the computer does freeze it freezes my screen so nothing is moving including the mouse cursor, Sometimes it'll just go to a black screen but the computers fans and keyboard lights are still on. I feel like it could be a ram or hard drive thing only cause I've gotten messages like this one before when just starting up the computer before windows logo even pops up.

And a random blue screen of death one time but rarely ever that.

Any ideas on how I could stop the freezing? Really need this laptop for school!

Borrowed daughters notebook when she got a new Ipad several months ago and
installed Sketchup 8 version 3.0.15158 on 11/25/12 . (used to be Googles software, apparently now by Trimble Navigation).
I shut down to take laptop with me after install, started and used briefly without any problems or errors, then shutdown to bring notebook back home. When I booted up, got the black screen, so immediately suspected Sketchup was the cause.
Since then, have been doing research and suspect it may not be the only issue.

(I can see the Windows logo come up, then spinning cursor and loading chimes, then nothing but black screen with back light on).
I've taken it back to Best Buy and to a local computer shop as well as calling Asus....all said I need a new monitor at a cost of around $180. (Still don't believe that or I wouldn't see ANYTHING try to load).

I realize that there are many threads with this title, but as far as I can tell, my case is unique.

The computer I use is an e-machine ET1331G. Specs are: 6 gig ram, 700 GB hard drive, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

So, there was an instance in which I shut down my computer by holding the power button, due to a problem with windows update being stuck on the first update if I tried to shut it down normally (I did the microsoft fix program the other day, but the thing crept back up and I didn't feel like doing it today).

When I tried to restart the thing, it would lose the video feed into the monitor. I popped my case open to see that the graphics card I installed (a Nvidia Geforce 9500GT) had gotten really hot and I took it out. I went to the PC's integrated graphics card but all that accomplished was getting a black screen with a cursor on it.

Safe mode works perfectly fine, but the normal start up doesn't at all.

I tried start up repair to no avail, I have scanned my hard drive with chdsk with no errors found, used sfc/scannow with no errors found. I have tried to fix windows update with the fix it program in safe mode, but it can't seem to fix it at all, in fact, windows update doesn't open in safe mode (but this could be normal for all I know).

Hi,
I am going to be crazy. I have problems with my webcams VX-2000.
I am trying to connect 2 webcams VX-2000 simultaneously to a PC for video surveillance.
Sometimes, and I don't know why, the preview in Microsoft Lifecam software is blank (black).
The only way to resolve this problem is to disconnect and reconnect the Webcam that is malfunctioning and then the preview displays the real image.
And after many time (I don't know how many: it seems to be a random problem) the problem is coming back and I am far away from the PC: I am connecting to it with Logmein, and with Logmein it is impossible to disconnect and reconnect the Webcam.

I have already tried all what I found on the net about this problem:
Troubleshoot bad or no video or problems starting LifeCam software
LifeCam software displays an error or the video preview is blank.
Resolve compatibility issues between LifeCam and other programs

Nothing works for me.

I have tried on many configurations and the results are:

Hiya

I've moved you to the Hardware forum for more response

Not that familiar with notebooks, but when you boot to safemode, the computer is using the basic of drivers that are installed, to overcome any problems. This, as you've already mentioned, may point towards a driver issue.

Go to Control Panel | System. Device Manager,

Under Display, expand to show the name of your screen, or whatever it shows. What does it say?
Then, rightclick and choose properties, driver tab. Whats the version?

Trying to fix this laptop for a friend of mine.

It is a HP 2000 / Windows 8
insydeh20 bios v3.7

When the laptop is powered on, it goes to a black screen.

Now, upon pressing F10 for BIOS it just reads "F10...BIOS setup options" in the bottom left corner and does absolutely nothing.

Occasionally on power up, it will give a "Hard Disk - (3F0) BootDevice not found" Error, here if I press F10, I can open BIOS

I have tried booting with legacy enabled:

UEFI boot Order:
OS Boot manager
Internal cd/dvd rom drive
USB Diskette on key/usb hard disk
usb cd/dvd rom drive
! network adapter

I dont see the HD, lets say the hard drive is bad, can i get stuff off it still?

Hi there,

My Samsung netbook failed on me today. Last time i used it was last night when i saw a nasty little trojan had infected my machine, so i turned off my wireless and let Sophos anti virus run. Turned off machine this morning (everything seemed ok at that point bar 23 iexplore windows open - guessing that was the trojans doing).

Anyhoo when i went to boot up the machine today it went to the grub menu without issue. So far so good. Ubuntu also boots without issue. So its not a complete HD failure then. The problems occur when i try to boot the windows partition. If i try to just boot all i get is a black screen with bugger all happening. If i boot to windows and then push F8 to get the windows boot menu up no matter what option I choose all that happens is that white progress bar appears at the bottom of the page, fills up about 1/5th of the way and stops and that is it?

Not really sure where to start here, did see a suggestion of using a windows recovery CD but my netbook doesnt have a cd drive :-( Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

A:Black screen after Grub selection (safe mode fails too) - Ubuntu still works though

So, is your netbook a dual-boot Ubuntu / Win7(Starter)?

Re: Recovery CD... a usb cd will probably work.
It may also be possible to make your recovery "disk" a thumb drive.
BUT... the recovery cd needs to be made before disaster strikes.

Since your issue began with Malware, and
Since some "recovery tools" require a "virus free" drive to avoid completely "borking" an OS partition,
I would suggest that you start with the Virus and Malware Removal forum.
I don't know if they can help you, (working from Ubuntu), or not... but I do think it is the place to start.
Try posting a new thread there , with the same information.
See what they suggest.

Reboot to safe mode and --Voila -- I'm in --Took 30-40 seconds to get past the Black screen but I'm in.
Next reboot -was safe mode with Networking and here I am

All data and settings intact.

Yea !!

several mre tries to reboot normally result in a 'Black' screen.
Thought it may be video drivers but search for updated ones found nothing.
Is it possible that the 'Repair' took me back a step and the video drivers are to advanced for the system now -- so a roll back may work??

Am able to back up everything --
A reformat and fresh install not out of the question -- just hate to spend the time setting everything up again. Would very much rather repair what I have if possible.

Home all night and will be playing around with this -- all idea's greatly appreciated.

Bob

A:after system 'Repair' safe mode works 'BLACK' screen at normal reboot

Hi Zappafrank,

Since you are able to boot your computer into safe mode, back up your files ASAP just in case something else happens which can cause your files to be in-accessible. Boot the computer into the recovery console and try to fix the master boot record.

Hope everything works out well for you.

Hello all,

To get straight to the point, I have an Asus G74SX-XR1. It's got an Nvidia GeForce 560M video card. I use this computer for my karaoke business. After one night everything was fine, but then I tried to turn on my computer the next day and I got to the "starting windows" screen but then at login I got black screened. Naturally I thought a driver problem, so I went into safe mode (screen works) and tried different drivers but none of them allowed me to see the normal windows startup.

I thought, ok, I just want and need a working computer, So I decided to upgrade and go to an SSD. I installed it and decided to reformat. Well upon reformatting, I still get the same problem!!! No login screen. The backlight is on but as soon as the finish setup screen appears I lose any graphics on the screen. Please help! Urgent!

EDIT: External VGA monitor works fine. Only laptop display doesn't. It's not the display/screen because it shows the post and starting windows perfectly.

A:Black screen at login, works in safe mode, done research no solution found

If your laptop display is only working in Safe mode, that means you have a driver issue, or you have it set to only use an external monitor.  You can go into the bios and set it to use only the laptop LCD.  Unhook the second monitor from the unit.  Also when you get into Safe mode, uninstall both the monitor & GPU drivers, along with any associated software for the Graphics chipset and monitor.

When windows boots back up, it will find and load the default Microsoft or manufacturer drivers for your machine.  Now of course, you can boot back into Safe mode, and install the drivers downloaded from the manufacturer website for your machine.  NVidia has been having issues with their drivers, both for Windows & Linux, so do not download from their site, the generic drivers for your GPU.

A friend of mine was have a problem with an HP 2000 laptop and against my advice he went in and did a manual BIOS update. Took it from F37 to F10. Dont know much about BIOS itself but that is his claim.
Upon completion of the update the computer reset and left us setting at a black screen with the CAPS locks led blinking. After a bit of research I discovered the blinking indicated did the bios was corrupted and so I went through the recommended steps such as removing the battery and holding the power button, jiggling the RAM among other hopefully quick fixes to no avail. I have since removed the HDD and connected it the my desktop. My thinking is I can restore the original BIOS setting and get the laptop back to a functional state. I however have no idea how to do that as I cannot even find HDD in my computer. I love learning and am a bit of a "do-it-yourself"er so id rather fix the problem myself then send it to "the professionals" so please no replies saying take it to the computer doctor or send it to HP support.

A:HP 2000 black screen after (ill advised) manual BIOS update

If there is a problem with the BIOS (corrupted) you need to (re)install the firmware. If you can't access the BIOS I have no idea how you can do that unless you happen to have the special equipment for "flashing" that motherboard.

I replaced the graphics card on a spare PC, but couldn't install it so changed back to the old one, but before doing so, disabled the monitor. Actually I went into Display Properties and then Monitor, Properties and under Device Usage at bottom, clicked on 'Do not use this device (disable)'

Question is, how do I re-enable it? BTW, I have it networked to other PC but can only get into shared docs

Anyway, now I get a screen view until Windows kicks in and then it goes totally blank (though I can hear Windows start via the speakers)

I've tried to start it in safe mode but it just stops with a list of driver names without going into safe mode (just seems to hang)

I tried using the last known good configuration but this didn't help either

Help please!

Thanks, Stephen

I have an ASUS G75 notebook that I'd like to connect to an LCD TV via HDMI. A few questions:

Does my notebook need to be turned off when I connect the HDMI cable to the tv or is it ok to plug it in while the notebook is turned on?

The notebook's screen res is 1600x900 max, the tv is 1920x1080. (The video card is an nVidia 660m with 2gb ram.) It will be ok to run the notebook at its native 1600x900 while running the tv at its native 1920x1080, correct?

Anything else special I should know about connecting my notebook to a tv?

Thanks much!

A:Notebook HDMI to LCD TV?

Yes, HDMI is "hot pluggable" meaning you can plug it in while either or both devices are powered.

The video will be handled by the TV and the resolution will be resolved. I regularly attach my phone with it's tiny screen to my TV via HDMI to watch video from Netflix and such without issue.
