Hi, As you are confirming that issue is intermittent, and now its working fine, it means that issue would be of display cable. The display cable would be loose. Issue can be fixed by refixing the display cable, if the issue persists then the display cable needs to be replaced. This is the only reason, I asked you in the previous post whether issue was intermittent or display view changed while moving the display lid. This particualr issue has nothing to do with the temperature. Regards,Sumit I am an HP Employee

"For Dim display issue if you use a flash light and point it on the screen you'll actually see the screen behind....And for display cable failure there will be no display or blurry..lines etc.."IF this is true, when flashing the light on the black screen, I was able to see it, although it was very dim, So, what do i need to do in order to fix the screen?

I was moving our Dell Studio 17 laptop and the screen went blank. I thought it did a power save or something. But I could not get it redisplay anything..no flickers, nothing.

I rebooted, nothing.

I opened up the back and reseated the ram and verified the hard drives were secure. I vacuumed out any dust. No difference.

So I tried using the HDMI with our TV and it displays just fine. I try to toggle the screen (function F8 on my laptop) and it makes no difference. HDMI is always shown.

In the past when we use the HDMI to display netflix movies on our TV, I hookup the HDMI and the laptop automatically switches to the HDMI display and turns off the laptop display. When I unplug the HDMI, it wouldnt turn the laptop screen back on. I would have to reboot with the HDMI disconnected for the display to come back.

Now rebooting doesnt not bring the screen back.

Anything else to try? are there settings somewhere forcing the laptop to not send info to its own screen? BIOS?

This laptop has an ATI card and uses the latest drivers. It does have the Catalyst control center where it detects the displays. It seems the 'unknown' laptop screen and TV (when HDMI is connected, the only way I can see the screen at this time)..but it calls them duplicates and calls both of them #1 display.

Thanks for the help

So, recently my computer's files got corrupted (I think). I was loaded up CS:S as usual, joined a server I love playing on and waited until I downloaded the map. I waited 10 minutes and guessed it wasn't responding, so I tried to force close it's process "hl2.exe" multiple times, but it didn't close, so I force shut off my laptop 5 minutes later. When I booted it - windows recovery showed up. I shrugged it off and let it do it's work. 1 hour later my laptop shut down and tried to run it again but system recovery runs for 5 seconds. Then I tried booting up in safe mode, but it also redirected me to system recovery. Then I got on my other laptop and downloaded a windows 7 iso. I burned it onto my usb and messed with some BIOS settings to boot the usb on start up. I exitted and saved my BIOS settings and booted up my computer, but after that my laptop didn't display anything. Any help?

P.S: I am using an LG monitor with a VGA cable because my laptop's screen is cracked from the inside and I've been using the vga connected monitor ever since without any problems and got used to it sooner or later. I also tried connecting my laptop with a HDMI cable to my tv, but it didn't work whatsoever.

Thanks in advance

A:black screen - Toshiba notebook - boots fine with external monitor

Tricky........

Are you sure that you have not accidently switched to mode where your laptop is only displaying to external monitor. you should find instructions in handbook. See if both external monitor and Main screen show up on display properties, make sure you know how to switch back to your external monitor if it does not automatically find and display on external monitor first.

if the default monitor montor setting is not the problem then your screen has failed and you will need to have your screen replaced. if you still have warranty then send it back to manufacturer or where you purchaced it from.

No warranty? then take to local computer shop, (shop around dont just go to PC World or major outlet)
Laptop displays are very expensive.

The screen on my new laptop has gone blank on starting up, it shows nothing, i tried a hard reset which didn't fix. The external monitor won't display anything.
It's a HP envy 15-j112tx running windows 8. With a hdmi connection i tried to connect to an external monitor. The monitor was previously using vga to a desktop, i unplugged that and connected my dvi cable to the dvi port. The monitor says check video connection then goes to sleep. I connected the cables with the laptop turned off and again with the laptop already on. The monitor still says check video connection. The connection is secure, it is a new cord. I pressed the F4 button to switch between screens and waited inbetween presses but still nothing.

It is still under warranty. I disabled the nvidia graphics card a few days ago to try n save on power usage, as it also has an intel graphics card. It has worked fine for a few days since i did that.
Now that i've powered it on/off about 5 times the hard drive stops whirring after about a minute, yet the power button light remains on. It no longer turns off when i hold power for even a minute. I dont want to kill the thing.

Can anyone help me, i can't find an answer in previous threads.

Hello!
A couple of days ago my Inspiron 8600 laptop screen decided to quit working.  Prior to that, it worked fine.  It hasn't been dropped, etc.
My laptop works perfectly with an external monitor, but the laptop screen shows zero signs of life, at any time (during the boot-up, or after Windows is launched.)
1) I've done the diagnostic that I found on the Dell website.  Everything checks out on the external monitor, but again, nothing is happening on the laptop screen.
2) I've toggled back and forth between the laptop screen and the external monitor using the "Function" + "F8" keys.  All that happens is that momentarily I can turn off the external monitor, but nothing seems to affect the laptop screen.
3) the only thing that is worth mentioning is that I have been using a docking station for a while, and sometimes upon re-booting the computer in the morning, I get a message saying that "the computer was improperly turned off" (or something like that), and that I need to be careful about heat damage.  I then need to press the "F1" key to complete the re-boot process.  This may or may not have anything to do with the laptop screen not working.

What do you guys/gals think?  What can I do about this?  The computer is no longer within warranty.

thanks much -

Richard

Given the age of the system, a worn out backlight bulb is the primary candidate - an LCD repair shop can change this for $100 or so.

Hello-
I have an issue with my Inspiron N5010 screen, it doesn't work when switching on my laptop on Battery or AC mode. It happens a lot of times when I turn on the laptop the power button, the power indicators at the bottom turns on normally and the laptop is running without any weird sounds. But the screen is pitch black even doesn't show up anything when I concentrate on it in with a lamp or any light.
When I press the power button again even after 5 mins from the start time of being running the laptop just turn off immediately and doesn't take time to switch off as If the windows wasn't loaded!
I was resolving this problem by disconnecting the AC adapter > removing the battery > Pressing and hold the power button for 20 seconds technique.but today it doesn't work anymore, If there's anything I can do to get the screen backlight to work normally please If someone faced this problem before which is too common and found a solution I would appreciate any help.
Thanks.

A:N5010 blank screen at startup (External Monitor also didn't work)

Hi,
I really appreciate all the troubleshooting you have already done. If you do not get a display on the external monitor it might be an issue with the video card or the system board where it is connected. When you connect an external monitor to the system press on the Fn and F1 keys together to toggle between the displays, if it doesn't work you can only with the F1, and check if you get display on the external monitor.
I would also recommend you to run the LCD built in self test to check the hardware functionality of the LCD screen, you can run this test by following the steps below:

Power down the system.
Press and hold the 'D'  key on the keyboard and power it on.
A solid color screen is shown and five different colors are displayed. While the colors are displayed, the system beeps every 2 seconds. You can use this test to determine if something is wrong with the display.

You can perform the Dell Diagnostics to determine if there is any hardware failure. To perform the diagnostics, follow the steps:

Turn off the computer; press and hold the <Fn> key, push the power button and release the keys simultaneously.
A blue screen will appear stating Pre-boot System Assessment .
A screen will appear with a message 'Were color bars displayed?(y/n).
Press 'Y' key if the color bars are displayed properly.
If you get any error code, make a note of it and continue testing.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A-215 notebook that I hooked up to my 19" HD LCD TV as an external monitor. The TV has all the normal RCA ports in the back, plus a VGA/audio port specifically for connecting to a PC. So I have the TV working with video only, through the VGA cable. I'm wondering how to get the audio playing through the TV instead of my notebook speakers?

Do I have to purchase some additional converter thing for this to work?? The only idea I had was to hook a regular audio cable from the TV to my headphone jack, but that didn't work. Then I didn't have sound at all because ... it was trying to go through headphones. Unplug it, sound comes through the laptop speakers.

Oh, I'm using Windows Vista if that matters.

Any help is appreciated!

A:Using TV as an external monitor on my notebook

Ashley Beaver,

I am not a pro at hardware but I think I may have run into your problem a while back. You see, I purchased a monitor to hook up to my laptop and I fancied the idea of using an HDMI cable (This is where my comment could lead you astray). turned on my laptop everything was fine and the sound came from the monitor speakers instead of my laptop headphones. Since you are using Vista this may work the same as Windows 7.

Go to Computer from the start menu - Open Control Panel - Hardware and Sound - Manage Audio Devices. If your T.V. Icon is there then perhaps clicking it and setting it as default could fix the problem. I hope this may help in anyway.

I have a gateway C-140 convertible notebook. OS Vista ultimate. I am having trouble connecting an external display such as another monitor or a projector to the VGA port. It worked in the past (less than a year ago when I tried it). I was able to connect a monitor to the docking station and when I connected the notebook to the docking station the external monitor displayed the desktop. I did not use that function much but recently I tried to connect a projector and that's where my trouble began.
Not only was the projector not detected but when I tested the system using the external monitor, it was not detected as well. I can not figure out this problem. Here's what I have tried so far:
Turned off computer, plugged in external monitor and turned on computer - thinking it would auto detect the new hardware. No luck. I tried this in both the docking station and the notebook's VGA port.
I uninstalled the video adapter, rebooted to have the generic VGA display adapter loaded, then re-installed the correct drivers which I downloaded from the intel website for Intel Chipset 965 series Mobile. No luck after reinstalling the video adapter drivers.
What else. . . When I go to the Display Properies I do see the icons for 2 screens with a big number 1 and a big number 2 in each screen. When I click on #2 it does not let me change the screen resolution. It stays on 800x600. But when I click to identify screens with the external monitor plugged in I do not get any picture.

This problem started yesterday.

I was in the middle of using Solid Works and the monitor went blank, my PC was still running, the music i still had int he background was still playing even.

The power light on the monitor is not loosing power, a short while after it seems to loose its signal from my PC it displays a standard "searching for signal" type of message, as if it was not connected at all.

After this original occurrence i restarted my computer, and it seemed to be OK while i used it for about a hour. However, later that day when i got back from class it had done it again (sometime while i was away) while it was just sitting at the desktop.

Now the screen seems to "loose signal" within a minute of turning on, unless i run in safe mode where everything seems to work fine.

Things i have tried:

Over Heating:
Video Card, CPU, RAM, the monitor itself, nothing feels even warm to the touch.

Drivers (Video):
The first thing i tried while running in safe mode was to uninstall my old drivers, and then reinstall new ones.

Resolution Issues:
I dont think it could be an issue with resolution, simply because it goes off randomly during normal operation, not at any special time

Viruses etc??:
AVG didn't pick anything up, i uninstalled AVG and got a fresh copy of the the newest version, still nothing. After that yeiled nothing, i uninstalled it and installed the lasted version of McAfee i could get my hands on (8.5i) it also found nothing.

Hi all,

This is my first post to this forum, and I'm looking forward to meeting and greeting, as well as solving my issue. I consider myself fairly computer savvy, but have been unable to tackle this problem. My specs are posted. Here goes:

I've installed W7 Ultimate 64 bit on my notebook, and often use it connected to an external monitor. The monitor in question is a Samsung 216bw LCD at 1680x1050 and connected via HDMI/DVI cord (HDMI out on notebook and DVI in on monitor). I am using a ATI Mobility Radeon HD4650 card.

My notebook turns off randomly when connected to this monitor. It used to turn off randomly when on the notebook monitor also after being idle for a bit, but I fixed this with different power settings. It doesn't seem to matter what I am doing - anything from internet browsing to games. When it shuts off, I do not get a BSOD, a shut down warning, or anything - it simply turns off like it lost power. I have to turn it back on manually, but have never had problems with it turning back on. It asks me if I want to boot into safe mode, and after I choose it will boot like nothing ever happened.

The only thing in the event viewer is the "Kernel Power" and "6008 event" errors that notify me that it shut off, but it doesn't give me more info to go off of. All of the bug checks are 0x0.

I am dual booting with Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit, and have never had a problem with my notebook in Ubuntu regardless of the monitor being used, leading me to think thi... Read more

I often need to connect my computer to external projectors and monitors.  Normally it works fine - the display automatically switches to extended desktop between the laptop's built-in display the external monitor or projector, but sometimes (about once a week at the moment), when I connect the projector or monitor to the HDMI port nothing happens, and the monitor doesn't show up in any of the display management software - Windows 10 Display Settings, or the Intel HD Graphics Properties or Graphics Options.  Restarting the computer doesn't help.   On four occasions I managed to fix the problem by reinstalling the Display Driver.  Part way through the installation process, the external display would simply start working again.  However, yesterday when it failed to recognize a projector, reinstalling the display driver didn't help. The problem has now happened with three different external displays:- A VGA digital projector connecting via a UGreen HDMI-VGA adaptor- A VGA display connecting via a (different) UGreen HDMI-VGA adaptor- An HDMI monitor connected via an HDMI cable (which subsequently worked) My display adaptor is an Intel(R) HD Graphics 520, and the driver I kept reinstalling was 1131206.inf - sp 74635 Any ideas?  I'm starting to suspect a hardware fault with the display adaptor.  Is there any way to run a diagnostic test on it?

I have a Dell notebook with XP Media Direct. The display goes black soon after boot-up while an external monitor functions. When the notebook lid closed and re-opened, the display comes back temporarily, the external seems to reset, and then the notebook display returns to black. I have hibernate turned off, standby set to never and sleep set to never.

I tested standby and hibernate and they both display that they are either about to switch to standby or hibernate before the display turns off.

I don't think it is a heat issue because it happens even after the notebook has been off for awhile and turned back on. I've updated the video drivers.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

A:Notebook display goes black, but external monitor is functional??

i believe this is a feature, not a problem.

Most laptops will shut off their screen when an external monitor is connected to save power. However, depending on your laptop, there should be a Fn command allowing you to swap display modes (only ext, only laptop, or both)

Very similar to the following problem but i do not have a raid, and it seems that this PC has a raid and i don't, plus it was never really determined what the actual solution was.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/596146-solved-windows-cant-boot-black.html
The basics: XP Professional Boot up screen, right before the windows loading screen, or direct after the F8 Menu if you hit "Start Windows Normally..." it will just lock up, no HDD activity, blank screen. now BSOD, nothing.

All 3 safe mods work fine.

Ran chkdsk /r in recovery.
Ran proper fixboot procedure.

Went into safe mode and checked the event viewer.

The only concerning message i got was: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
AmdK8
Fips
nod32drv

Formatting really isnt an issue since i can back up anything i need through safe mode. However its just the fact that the Windows gremlin has struck me again and i must defeat it once more.

I highly doubt this is a hardware issue as it is more of a driver/software issue.

Anymore information for me, or from me that you need, i would be extremely happy.

Running rstrui.exe from command prompt in safe mode finally got this result in the system error log:

"The System Restore filter encountered the unexpected error '0xC0000010' while processing the file 'wpfb_igxprd32.dll' on the volume 'ShadowMount1'. It has stopped monitoring the volume."

When it reboots it shows the restore failed - no changes made to my system. The rstrui.dat log file is not text and so illegible to me. The above dll is from Pivot Software I believe and I am running the HP 2.0 software + driver package (which I reinstalled) for this monitor.

The CP Display utility won't let me change the settings to get back to a dual monitor system. Troublingshooting and advanced settings there usually crash the system in the above DLL. The registry shows BAD_EDID for my default monitor; but the HP w2408h still works so I thought a simple registry restore and system roll-back would fix it. I have 3 RP all from MS S/W Distribution Service 3.0 before my problems started on 7/8/2011 with a HAL.DLL missing or corrupt. I eventually fixed that after running CHKDSK /P /R and refreshing NTDLR, BOOT.INI, etc. and then this new problem cropped up.

All 3 RP fail the same way on restore attempts. Backup versions of the problem DLL appear to be the same so I am doubtful doing a single file restore will help any.

So I spend all day yesterday trying to figure out a solution to how I was going to make this work I have a 23" HP S2331 LCD Flat Panel that has 1x VGA port and 1x DVI-D port and my main computer has a ATI Radeon HD 5760 Graphics card that has 1x VGA Port 1x HDMI port and 1x DVI-I port. What I would like to do is utilize the VGA port for my KVM switch so when I hook up another machine I can just hit the kvm and use my screen and when I just want to use my machine normally I can switch the input on the monitor to DVI but when I do this now I get a blank screen... The input light stay blue but I get no picture (sometimes it will turn on for a second or two randomly but the picture is completely out of whack like really weird artifacts but it goes out randomly.
Anyone have any ideas? I am waiting for the comp store to open so I can try swapping out the cable but I really don't think it's that...

Please Help...

I have a Sony Vaio desktop, when i went to log in i am not able to see anything after i enter my password, i get a blank desktop with no icons nor tool bar or start up menu. Not even the Ctrl Alt Del option works, the only think that works is pressing the windows button and L and that takes me back to the login screen so i can shut down the comp.

I have had my pc restart on me while it was loading up before and have gotten the blue screen. This is a computer i bought from a friend when it was brand new a few years ago, however i do not have the windows CD.

Anything anyone can do to provide any info would be of great assistance, oh btw when i log in under safe mode i get the same thing cant to anything nor see anything, it seems like its trying to load something but after a period of time i.ll get the blue screen, it will restart, or just do nothing....

Thanks :-)

I think you have an issue with your explorer.exe file. That is the file that loads basically everything on your user-name including wallpaper and icons and such. You may be able to repair it if you have a Windows Xp installation disk.If a mod reads this, could you please move it to the Windows XP forum?

Hi Bleeping Computer....
Right now I have a serious problem on my notebook....
My Notebook is HP Probook 4421s

Here are what happens before it goes completely mess right now....
1. I was surfing on the internet, when suddenly a notebook pop up, and disappear again (this is what i suspected to bee the root cause of the problem)
2. then I continued surfing as usual..after about 1 hour, my screen started to scramble "a little bit", then it goes blank for 1 second, then a pop up on my bottom right screen says something about "disk driver has recovered......"
3. i don`t know what to do, then while I`m searching how to fix the problem, it happens again....
4. it happens about 3-4 times. At the last time, the scrambled screen become worse...
5. I decided to do "system restore", but after restarting, it goes to completely blank screen
6. i turn off the notebook, wait about 15 minutes, then turn on again, still only blank screen
7. i read about "hard reset (15 minutes hit power button while unplug power cord and battery", still blank screen
8. try, 2-3 times, i give up, and wait until tomorrow (today)
9. then i try to turn it on again, the screen is on, showing some vertical thick line of scrambled screen. i can hardly read what the screen is showing, but it still fail to start up the windows...
10. I try to hit F10 repeatedly, then it comes up to some page (hp back up system? with hp logo on bottom right), then it shows some menu, i choose something like "run-in ... Read more

Hello, I've had this problem with my laptop display for about half a year. When the laptop starts, the backlight turns on, but there is no display of Windows. When connected to an external monitor or projector, this displays the image with no problem. Thus, my question is: if my GPU and backlight are working, what component is causing the problem and how can I fix it? It is worth mentoning that sometimes on start up the display came back to life, and then if no shutdown or battery depletion occured, it would function normally. However, if the battery ran out, the problem came back (since I very often just put the laptop on sleep, this system functioned for a while...) Then, a couple of weeks ago this happened again, and the display hasn't worked since. I am now working with an external monitor.  Looking forward to your answers. Many thanks, Stefania

Ok so I recently updated to Windows 10 but now when I connect my laptop to my external monitor the laptop screen doesn't show up on the external monitor.

My laptop's screen is broken so I can't see anything. The laptop is still on the screen immediately after updating so I could blindly work my way through the update screens, but someone would have to upload pictures of the screens immediately after updating to Windows 10.

Thank you for whoever helps!!!!

everything started goin wrong when i went into my bios configuration....my usb hardware wasnt being recognize in windows so i went to adjust the options and changed the usb function to enable...i also did some other things......although my graphic card is agp...on the primary graphic it says pci so i changed it to agp...graphic winsize was 64mb i changed it to 128mb, cpu was 133mhz, i turn on the overclocked and change it to 160mhz....and then restart and everything went wrong, it stayed with the black screen......

when i turn on my computer everything works but my monitor stays blank even with 3 different video cards i tried with...,also thought if it was my monitor so i went to my bros computer and try it but nope even my bros monitor stayed black...so it has to be the motherboard itself...........my fans, harddrive, and whatever works.....mouse(optic) works but keyboard doesnt seem to get any signal...tower light stays green but when turned on, it turns to orange jes like the monitor

i also try taking every card out...sound card, graphic card, and my harddrives(since it was the harddrive that i change the configuration in) but nope still doesnt work

i google my probelm and tried everything and still no luck

If not, can you get the motherboard model and check the manufacturer's website for a manual? hello!

could someone help me with this?
first of all, yes i have read many posts on similar topics and all of them ring a bell but none fits my problem. or then, i haven't found that one. so idecided to actually join one of those forums...

the story so far:

i got this compaq presario x1000 laptop for free because the monitor is not working. actually it would display everything but without the blacklight so after a while i diagnosed that the inverter is not working anymore.

so now i am using an external monitor lg flatron 575lm, res. 1024x768. (i think the laptop itself has 1280x800).

graphic card ati mobility radeon 9200 (although everst says 9000), driver for the radeon 9600 series, have also tried radeon 9000 series, both work nicely on the external monitor)

everything was peaceful, until yesterday when i was playing with a program called smac (spoofing my comps mac address), had to reboot, and both monitors are working! but only until windows starts loading drivers, then it's again only the external monitor. though it seems that the backlight is active now, but the screen is black. immediately i tried to get the monitor working by installing and uninstalling drivers, wiping all ati drivers away with driver cleaner, try again... for many hours...

the result is always the same:
the laptop's monitor works nicely with vga (and the external too), but goes black when i install the ati driver. then the external monitor works nicely, all 3d... Read more

My HP pasilion cames with windows 8.1. My son upgraded it to  windows 10. To some point, he wanted to rollback to Win 8.1, but it never succeeded. Recently he wanted to do a factory reset. We tried, but it did not succeed. And then the laptop always went to the screen of options for factory or so. No matter which option we selected, it never reached the screen of login. After we set 'rollback' as the default option, the system started with blank screen and then shut down in a couple of minutes. I tried to press F2. The HP screen came out. I tested the system, all passed. When we exited the HP screen, then the laptop went to blank screen and shut down in a couple of minutes, similarly to what I mentioned above. Please help. Thanks a lot in advance. Ben

That fixes the issue temporarily, but the issue crops up again after some hours. Any suggestions on what must be causing this? My laptop is just 7 days old..

Basically almost everything i do is on my external monitor which acts as my main primary screen. Thus i do sometimes open some windows or drag a window or so to the other screen like youtube etc to the laptop screen which is the secondary monitor.

My issue at the moment is everything is way too big on the laptop screen. I want to have 1920x1080 resolution but its way too big. I googled what is my resolution on it and it shows 1536 x 864. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080? I googled what is my resolution on the external monitor and it does show 1920x1200 which is correct.

Hi, Posted this in the Vista forum and was advised this was the proper place to post this message.

Let me start out by saying, I'm no techie, but I do try to fix things myself first due to financial restraints as a single mom/nursing student. I really could kick myself for not posting when all this started, but that's not going to help me now. The damage is already done.

My computer is a Toshiba P105, 32-bit, with Vista Home premium.

I have automatic backup through Mozy.com

Here's the story as best as I can remember and as brief as possible: A few weeks back I somehow got a Google hijack virus. I used Malware Bytes and found two Vundo viruses and cleaned them, but the problem persisted. I then used Spybot Search and Destroy, as I keep both anti-virus programs on my machine. SB found some additional viruses--Vundo and some kind of Trojan. I cleaned them off, but again, the problem persisted. I went on a search for Google hijacked, and found this site. I tried searching for a solution. The rest of the story remains sketchy, as I can't remember the exact sequence of events. But I think it went like this--I linked to a program called Combofix and ran it. First it made a restore point. then it found a bunch of what it called "rootkits", a bunch in files titled SKYNET, and some other stuff. I did hand write them out, as Combofix requested me to do so, incase they were needed later. It supposedly removed them, and the problem seemed better for like hal... Read more

A:blank screen on boot up but safe mode works

While booted into the safe mode try looking for any error or warning messages in the Event Viewer, which is in Administrative Tools in your Control Panel. You click either application or system on the left side in Event Viewer, then I do click view, filter, then click to uncheck the box for information, apply and ok, so then only warnings and errors will show on the right. Then just double on one of those to open to see the details of it. Maybe try to run the system file checker tool in safe mode too, click start, run, type in this; sfc /scannow , and include that space before the / too.

Not a lot of info here1) Can you access the BIOS /CMOS screen2) IF yes can you move around the screens and or see that the system has recognised the hard drive. Does the system make any strange noises? How long does it take to switch on ?Is it getting over hot? What happen eventually?Do you can you power it off easily or do you have to hang on to the power button to get it to go offWith it powered OFF!Have you tried removing the hard drive?Reseatting the Memory?Removed the Optical drive? If no then try this below.  Try using a boot DVD/CD to establish if the system will 'get out of bed' Or a linux boot flash stick you can then see if the system is viable and or if the system can access the Hard drive(s) It will also allow you to recover the data transfer to a flash stick.

Both on normal and safe mode startups, it's only a black screen with a movable mouse cursor.

- tried startup repair, no problem found
- tried sfc /scannow, told me it needed to reboot to do some repair operation, did nothing.
- system restore has no restore points
- cd-rom is dead/dying
- have an usb boot image thing and it loads files but then there is only the background image with mouse cursor, no setup or whatever appears. So, same as normal, only with a pic instead of black screen?
- tried both fail-safe and optimized bios defaults
- cleaned for dust and dis-/reconnected some wires
- doing a windows memory scan, because it seems the only option left

long back-story, short:

did a defrag a while back, there was a power loss, .dlls started not be recognized, tried to fix, but no success, found out cd-rom was dying and couldn't use the install dvd, wanted to use usb image to reinstall, but this happened so i never got the chance.

A:[SOLVED] blank screen on startup, only mouse cursor works

While you were in the BIOS, did you notice if the Hard Drive and CD were recognized?

We will need the specs of the computer, what is the USB image you talk about. You are going to need a way to boot from either a CD or USB to test the hardware.

If the hard drive was being accessed when the power failure occurred, there is a chance the drive has been trashed.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C655D laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. Computer was working like a dream and has been for about a year now, when yesterday I booted up after running Windows update, like always, logged on like normal, only to see a blank screen with only my mouse cursor. Neither Ctrl+Alt+Del nor Ctrl+Shft+Esc work to bring up the Task Manager. I am able to boot into Safe Mode just fine, but of course unable to uninstall the Windows updates to the .NET framework.

I have tried System Restore several times now, both from the Safe Mode and from the start-up recovery options accessed via F8 upon system startup. From the same menu, I have attempted Startup Repair but alas, Windows does not detect any problems (go figure, right? ).

I have ran the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool to check if my hardware was going bad, and upon completion, it rebooted, once again, to a blank screen after being prompted to log in. Mouse works, nothing else does. Upon pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del I am greeted with the following message after waiting roughly 5 minutes:

"The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when CTRL+ALT+DELETE was pressed. If the operating system does not respond, press ESC or restart the computer by using the power switch."

^Pressing ESC makes the message disappear along with my mouse, so that I am staring at a completely blank screen.

In your case with the Dell notebook, try holding down the <Fn> key and then tapping the key that is marked with an F8. If that does not work, please give us the exact model name and number of the notebook.

Wondering if someone can confirm if I have a mobo problem.
My monitor is showing a black screen all the time.
It changes from Orange(Stand-by) to Blue(Active) at all the correct times.
This includes at boot up, moving the mouse or pressing a key to get out of stand-by.
I have tried different video card in a diferent slot.
I have tried a different monitor.
I have removed the battery from the mobo to clear the CMOS.
Thru network, I can access the hard drives and files that are shared.
Seems the PC runs fine except for no picture.
I can even hear the start up tune when windows kicks in.
Unfortunately the mobo does not have it's own VGA so I have no choice but to try a card.
It all points towards mobo but was hoping anyone out there might know something else I can try.
Cheers everyone for looking.

I left it sitting over night still never fully booted up. I've followed all of the HP troubleshooting steps. I've removed battery held down power button plugged ac adapter in turned back on and nothing. I've reseated the memory sticks. I've ran the startup fix and says it can't repair problems. I also ran sfc /scannow in cmd prompt and it fixed some errors. I would factory restore the computer but I don't have the reset dvds nor does the person that owns the laptop. Is this a driver issue ?

August, I attached a new SOYO 17" flat panel (DYLM017A) to what was to become my wife's computer and used it to set up our home network. After 3 or 4 weeks it began to flicker, change brightness. Then in mid October it failed. At first it would startup just fine, but in a few minutes the screen would go blank. I checked all connections, cables, etc. I attached an old CRT monitor to the computer and all worked just fine. I replaced 17" flat panel from WALMART. But...

The point of this long narrative is that I now have $160 in a flat panel that doesn't work (Neither Tiger or Soyo will accept a return). I strongly suspect that the backlight is broken. How can I tell if if it really is the backlight. Does anyone know if SOYO uses cold-cathode tubes. Can these be replaced? Is this a repair I might attempt?

The power light remains blue, which I believe means it is still receiving a signal, but screen is blank.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello ,
I recently bought a 2nd monitor and i was intending to have my old one as the 2nd monitor however it's not working properly. The PC detects a 2nd monitor and when i drag my mouse far left side the cursor disappears meaning it went to the 2nd monitor but the monitor is blank so any help would be appreciated.

A:2nd monitor screen is blank

I've read the following thread 'Dual monitor problem - 2nd monitor is blank'. Both of my Monitors are using VGA adapter and are connected to the video card not the motherboard

After a lightning storm, computer has no display at all on monitor. On boot, hard drive is running, but not even a post screen appears. There is a discrete video card, so I removed it and plugged the monitor in to the onboard VGA, still no image. Power supply voltages are good. I removed all external connections/devices, still the same.

I am wondering if bad ram could make this happen. I don't have any spare ram, there is only one ram module. I did remove the ram and tried to start the computer, still no display.

Thanks

I have a new computer and trying to get my multiple display video card to activate, i went into Device Manager and turned off the display adapter (there were two there, but I turned off the one I believed was for the mother board. can't remember what the two options were). I thought this was the way I did it in my last PC, but it immediately turned off the monitor and when I rebooted, I got nothing. Neither on the Motherboard VGA nor on output of the VDI from the card.

I have a Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H motherboard and a SSD drive. the graphics card is a Galaxy MDT-GT610.

Now here's the catch...in the last 2 weeks with this new PC, it boots up in 10-15 seconds...and there is never anything that flashes up on the screen...in 10 seconds, you have the Windows login screen. So at this point in time, I press Del , or F8, or F12...I the screen remains blank. Not sure if it's in bios, in Windows etc... How do I get something back on my monitor???
thanks

A:Blank screen - monitor

Does the report (Name of your system) screen show up? Have you tried safe mode?

Going to device manager and "Turning off" the monitor is not possible. You have either disabled the GPU or uninstalled the drivers.

Does your system have onboard graphics as well?

I recently got a used computer from my cousin that I am trying to set up for my kids. When I turn it on there is only a black screen. It shows nothing. Not a cursor or anything. You can hear the computer start up (the fan, etc) and the green light comes on. I tested the monitor on another computer and it works just fine. My next guess was maybe video card? Bought a new one and inserted but the same happened. I was hoping that maybe after I inserted it I could go to a boot screen and instruct it to install from CD before trying to load Windows by typing f8 or f12 @ startup. No go. Total black screen still. Not even a cursor. It's a dell. I'm not sure what year but relatively new (within the last 10 years). I think Window's XP Home Edition. The inside looks clean. No noticeable sign of damage.

Thanks for your help.

my sons laptop got switched over to the 'second screen only' option by mistake yesterday, to get round this problem ive plugged in an old pc monitor (as his hdmi port doesnt seem to work). i transfered back to 'screen 1 only' (and later on, trying to rectify the problem, been through 'extend', and 'duplicate'). all was fine i thought until i unplugged the vga cable, and both screens have gone black.
the laptop screen now only turns on when the monitor is plugged. it loads the toshiba logo at start up, then turns off before the loading screen and password page.

model: satellite c50-b-1c4.

if anyone can help i would be greatly appreciative as i spent all yesterday trying different things (icluding hard restart) and searching through half the internet.

Borrowed daughters notebook when she got a new Ipad several months ago and
installed Sketchup 8 version 3.0.15158 on 11/25/12 . (used to be Googles software, apparently now by Trimble Navigation).
I shut down to take laptop with me after install, started and used briefly without any problems or errors, then shutdown to bring notebook back home. When I booted up, got the black screen, so immediately suspected Sketchup was the cause.
Since then, have been doing research and suspect it may not be the only issue.

(I can see the Windows logo come up, then spinning cursor and loading chimes, then nothing but black screen with back light on).
I've taken it back to Best Buy and to a local computer shop as well as calling Asus....all said I need a new monitor at a cost of around $180. (Still don't believe that or I wouldn't see ANYTHING try to load).

I've been trying to figure out how to resolve this ever since, as time allows but now it has become urgent since my daughter really needs her notebook back.
Since I'm used to Windows XP Pro and IE8on my Dell Latitude, there has been a big learning curve for me on her 64bit notebook running Windows 7 and using Chrome. Hi

I was wondering if anyone can help with the following symptoms.

My PC has a Gigabyte Socket A Gigabyte GA-7ZMMH motherboard with a 900Mhz AMD Duron processor. It has a seperate graphics card (not sure of the make/model) but it is old. The operating system is Windows 98.

When I switch the computer on nothing at all appears on the screen (which does not come out of standby mode), not even the POST screen. The PSU and CPU fans activate and a green light on the motherboard lights up. The hard drive kicks in as well.

I have tried/tested the following steps.

The monitor/leads tested and work fine on another system.
The PC still does not work when connected to another monitor
New battery in the motherboard.
Graphic card tried in another system and works ok.

Any troubleshooting suggestions or idea's gratefully received.

Thank you

A:Monitor screen blank on boot up

Hi

Things that are left

Make sure everything is clean. Not tons of dust

Try the video card again to make sure it's fitting OK in its slot and there is not a lot of corrosion on the contacts.

Disconnect everything except video card and monitor, RAM,
CPU/heatsink/fan

RAM Take the chips out and reseat them. If you have 2 chips try one at a time Try it on another system or try chips from a working system in the problem one. (Make sure that it's the same type)

Power Supply You can test them, but it's easier just to try another one if you can

Motherboard Not much to do here except replace it

CPU Least likely cause of the problem

Hi Every one at Tech spot, I came here seeking knowledge & Help..(hopefully)..
I always tried customizing my pc by winging it myself half of the time. Until this time I have I Blank Screen?

This is how it happened, two days ago, I was editing a dvd menu in the sonic program, when I was done with the file, I sent the file to process for the dvd. Suddenly my pc goes out, no power, noi nothing, with a screen blank and everything? wow.. So I go a little crazy, It must be the power supply I thought, right? Well I find an ac or dc cord and change it, then the power is back on. Yeah.. But my screen is still blank?why?

I go to the store and by a new graphics card, install it, and still a blank screen, I took out all my ram and left one in.. Still nothing, checked for smells and damage nothing!!

Well, it can be plenty of things, with the motherboard or monitor being a suspect as well. Do you have another system you can check your parts in (And use its parts to see whether your system works) ?

Hi

I'm just wandering if anyone can please help me with my problem.

Today I noticed that after I was booting up it would stop on the memory check - ie it would stop on 992mb or whatever it was.

So I thought weird, I'd turn it off and restart, it happened again.

Then after a while nothing would happen - the screen would be blank.

Any ideas anyone? Please.

CPU?

Motherboard?

Thanks in advance.

A:Blank Monitor Screen When Boot Up

Welcome to Techspot!
If you take a little time and fill in some hardware details on your machine it would help in solving you problem.
Was your machine running before and this problem just started, or had you made any changes ?
If your machine is been running for a good while you may need to remove and clean the terminals with an eraser on the ram and some real house cleaning in your box.
In the mean time , you should be able to shutoff the memory test sequence in your Bios setup .
The idea is to get to run a real memory test on your machine.
There are free programs you can download to do this.

Hi

I'm not sure but I think my monitor is dead, thought I'd post on here to see why you guys think since you quite obviously know more than me.

It's a 19" black Reliyss monitor (used in the UK) with both dvi-d and ... umm ... the blue connection VGA?.

The problem was one night after it went onto powersave mode, I went back to it after my dinner and found although the screen was black the monitor light was green like it was on. I moved the mouse about, pressed a couple of keys but alas no picture. I went to switch the monitor's on off button off but it doesn't seem to do anything. I switched off the computer and back on again, same black screen and green light. I unplugged the monitor from the mains plug, left it over night - same, left it for a week - same.

I was playing about with the psu of my spare computer (linked with the white dvi-d cable to monitor) and I can't help thinking it might be because of this. Is it possible I blew something in the monitor and it never went to powersave? I've tried it with another power lead and it's the same story black with green light.

I was hoping there was a quick fix I could do but sadly I think it's hand in pocket time for a new monitor

Cheers in advance
Gogz

When I boot-up my computer, it takes about 2 seconds longer for the monitor to turn on then usual, and right before the log-in screen the display will disappear, and stay off. The PC continues working normally, as far as I can tell.

What precluded this issue? Why, I haven't the foggiest. Windows update isn't set to automatic, and I hadn't updated any programs/software etc. in two weeks.

Timeline of Events
3.24, morning: PC booted up fine.
3.24, evening: 6 hour car ride with PC in box, cushioned by clothing, buckled in.
3.24, later in evening: Upon boot-up, issue was first discovered

Here's what I've been doing to try to rectify the issue;
-Did a clean install of the newest graphics driver, twiceBoth times, upon restart after installation, PC booted up normally, but I got constant 'The display driver has stopped responding and recovered' notifications.
As well, upon shutting down the computer, the next time it booted the original issue returned, and I had to boot into safe mode to use it.

-Restore the system to it's 3-21 statusWhen viewing the prompt to let me do this, I was there had been no changes between that restore point and present day. The system restore was unsuccessful.
-Tested the original cables with an older CRT monitorSame result, the monitor blanked before the log-in screen.

-Updated and ran malwarebytes and MSEThey didn't find any issues

-Went into msconfig, disabled all startup processes, and restarted the PCAgain, monitor went blank before ... Read more

A:Monitor goes blank before log-in screen, stays off

Hi HannahH and welcome to sevenfourms.

When did this problem start? Did you do any updates or install any new hardware or software?

Is this the built in graphics or is it a graphics card? If so the type of graphics card installed?

Computer specs;

Processor: i7 4790
Motherboard: Gigabyte z97-HD3
Graphics Card: Galaxy GTX 970-4G
HDD: Apacer Solid State Drive
RAM: 8GB

A brand new computer, as you can see good specs. It had windows 7 on it and I tried to install Windows 8 on it. The installation purpley-blue screen began, reached 100% and then the monitor went blank. The power supply was sound but the monitor couldn't find the computer it was plugged into.

I power the monitor on, it turns green and then the monitor goes to sleep outright.

I tried a second monitor with the same result.

I tried a different cable, same result. The monitors work when I plug them into my laptop (which also has Windows 8.1 installed). In fact the HDD also worked when plugged inside my laptop, I could see it at least (though the installation was incomplete and messed up the windows 7 installation to boot.).

I can't fathom what the problem is. This is all modern hardware that worked just fine with Windows 7 but not Windows 8? What can I do to solve this? The machine is under warranty but I seriously don't want wish to return it.

Any ideas on what the problem is, let me know.

I considered that it could be the BIOS set up? I may be able to enter the BIOS if I, again, attach the HDD into my laptop.

Thanks in advance to anyone that reads this.

I usually connect the vga cable from my monitor to the port on my gpu,but for some reason it doesn't display anything now.

I tried to locate the source of the problem by doing these

1) Connected the vga cable from my laptop to the monitor, and it displays the laptop's content just fine so the monitor/cable isn't the issue.

2)Connected the cable to the vga port on my samsung smart tv and to the slot on my gpu and my desktop boots and functions just fine.

3) I opened up my cpu cabinet and dusted the ram and the video card and put everything back in place but that didn't help either.

I don't have a DVI cable with me so I can't check if that works and I don't have another similar monitor either I can test it on other than my tv.

A:Monitor powers up, displays blank screen.

Before anyone can help you, you need to post ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact mb installed, exact cpu installed, exact pw supply installed, etc, etc, etc. If this is a big box system ie dell, hp, whatever, then post the exact make and model# If you have a service tag, post that as well.

Next is this a relatively new build or has this system been running fine for a while?

Background

Computer: E-Machines T2958 running Windows XP SP 2

Summary is at the bottom if you get tired of reading ...

Trying to upgrade from a CRT monitor to a 20" LCD monitor (HP w2007)
The monitor was recognized by Windows and showed up in the Device Manager.
Windows was running and the monitor display was fine.
The monitor reported it wasnt running at an optimal resolution.
I dont know what the resolution was. Possibly 1024x768 as a guess.
The user manual suggested running a software package found on the
monitor's installation CD.
When this software package was run, the screen resolution changed
to 640x480 with 4 colors and the computer rebooted.

Again, Windows booted and the monitor showed the display but
now at 640x480 with 4 colors. In Control Panel, the user could not
change the Display settings.

The user then removed the monitor from the Device Manager and shut Windows
down. The user then hooked up the CRT monitor and rebooted.
The thinking here is that Windows would detect the monitor and
the older CRT could easily display a resolution of 640x480.
I suspect removing the monitor from Device Manager was a bad
idea but that was done.

After the Windows splash screen, the monitor display goes blank
but Windows does boot successfully. The user knows this
because the user starts and signs on to Yahoo Messenger automatically
at Windows startup.

Most online advice is to boot in Enable VGA Mode and change the display
setting to ... Read more

So everything was fine before Windows 10 AU updates. The problem is that if I restart the computer it will I get a blank screen and my monitor(s) goes to sleep and loses signal and doesn't detect the video card so I don't see POST and just a black/blank screen. I'm pretty sure that it must have rebooted right to my login screen because I can tell my mouse/keyboard lighting up and my EVGA GTX 950 fan stop spinning after it reaches the login screen(it uses a EVGA Precision to control the fan).

But on a shut down and a cold boot up it's fine. Only on a RESTART that I will always get this symptom. But IF I shut down the computer and go into the BIOS and exit the BIOS it have the symptom once again like the going into the BIOS somehow make it no longer a COLD BOOT and it reads it as a RESTART.

What I have try and still doesn't work:
-use DDU(Display Driver Uninstaller) to remove Nvidia driver and using the Microsoft Basic Driver so Driver isn't the problem
-turn off FAST STARTUP(Fast Startup is disable in BIOS also)
-unplug and replug the monitor cable and power cable to the monitor
-try DVI and HDMI and still same symptom

Mother board and video card and monitor isn't the problem
-place my GTX 950 into another computer running W10 AU and having no problem
-onboard HD 4000 have no symptom on reboot
-try the GT 430 and AMD 7850 on my rig and doesn't show the same REBOOT symptom

So my conclusion is this. Before the W10 AU update. I remove ... Read more
