HP 4540s boot problem

Q: HP 4540s boot problem

I have a Probook 4540s, 3 years old. When I try to move it, the screen becomes black. After that the HDD light becomes yellow instead of white, the fan becomes louder and windows cannot start. Also, after I have read few topics on this forum, I counted the number LED light on caps lock flashes and it flashed 5 times. I've read this is a system board error? I don't know what is considered by system board? After 15-20 minutes the things are normal until I try to move it again....

Hi,last time I tried to start up, my NB 4540s results a start screen with:Windows Boot Manager problem 0xc000000e It says to use the recovery disk, and this is what I did, but each time I try to restart the screen is the same.I tried with ESC, F8, F11, and so on, but nothing solved.I tried to keep pressed ON button withouth battery to descharge laptop, but all is the same. I have seen the recovery disk with windows 8, but this NB has windows 7. Maybe this could be a problem when recovering ? Anyway the disk runs, but nothing different each start, the same windows boot manager windows appears.I can reinstall the system from scratch withouth problems, but how can install from cd ? Thanks

A:4540s Notebook windows boot manager problem

It is likely that there is a problem with either the hard drive or the memory. If either is true it is not going to be possible to restore an operating system unless the bad component is replaced.  Can you get into the BIOS (F10) or diagnostics (F2) at bootup? You should run the hardware testing programs which are available at either place. Let us know what you find or if you have trouble getting there.

When I push the power button to my HP ProBook 4540s, it does not boot, but a few seconds later the fan turns on and the screen remains black.  If there were any error messages, I can't see them.  The only way to shut it back down is to press and hold the power button.  Then I try to boot it agian.  The computer will boot normally about 1 out of 35 or 40 attempts.  Briefly removing the battery and placing it back does not help.   I haven't made any changes to the computer.  It is about 10 months old.  Any ideas???

Hello MS, Question:  Do any of the LED lights on the keyboard turn on when the computer doesn?t boot?  Here?s an HP troubleshooting document for notebooks that won?t start, along with some info about LED error codes: If that doesn?t help, it is probably a hardware issue. Since you've only had the notebook for 10 months it?s probably still under warranty. You can contact HP: Please let me know if any of these suggestions helped.  If not, I will try to investigate further. TobindoHP Representative

Update (Sep 23rd) Figured out graphic will only switch when the AC is plugged out and the notebooks running on battery. While the battery is in and the ac is plugged in it won't switch. (AC in + Battery out neither.) How come the it manges to switch only on battery + after closing the game -> a 100% Bluescreen comes.(I'm sure it tries to switch back to the HD 7650 .. and somehow it does not manage.)_________________________  Hi there, hope you guys can figure something out .. so far i tried everything to my knowledge.First the Specs:HP ProBook 4540s (C5E12ES), 15.6", Core i5-3210M 2x 2.50GHz, 6GB, 750GB, AMD Radeon HD 7650M 2GB(integrated HD 4000) (pre-installed OS > SUSE 11)Current OS: Win 7 Professional 64bitProblem:Installed almost all drivers that were offered here: for w7 64bit; and they claimed to be working)But  it never switched to the Radeon HD 7650M no matter what i assigned in the AMD Catalyst (High Performance) + Energy Mode Max Power (also checked the option all were set for max power). So basically the problem is the discrete Radeon HD 7650M graphics card is never available. I tried disabling in the BIOS the "Switchable Graphics Mode" > causes only that the HD 7650M isn't even visible in the Hardware-Manager + not available + Catalyst shows that it isn't working properly. (+ there is no Option that worked ... Read more

A:Update: HP 4540s Graphics problem with AMD Radeon HD 7650M

Switching problem SOLVED! Since it switched the graphics on battery mode i new that probably the energy-options could interfere - checked all and found one that blocked switching the graphics: > Click the Battery > Energy Options (for the current scheme) > enhanced energy options > check ALL entries there are 3 that can conflict with the switching: > Set the dynamic switchable graphics for battery and ac to automatic> Set the intel gpu power plan for ac to max performance (or both - if you want)> Set the ATI Powerplay-Options to max/optimal performance! Also Check that you have set the application/game to HIGH Performance in yourCatalyst Control Center (+ do not disable the Power Play Option in Catalyst Control Center) (+ don't forget after switching from balanced to high-power or energy-saving these entries must be set as well) ^ Graphic will switch!! What remains ... the computer still will bluescreen afterwards (maybe this also can be resolved by playing around with the Energy Options. !Also keep in mind that applications/games still will show that you can select the HD 4000 only but it does switch to the discrete gpu (7650M HD). Higher FPS + better graphics will also prove that. Screens to make it easier to understand:

Attempted to up-date to Windows 10. Couldn't do it. Microsoft (MS) Tech tried to do it and couldn't do it. It seems there are some security tools that must be removed as they are incompatable with Windows 10. MS tried to remove and couldn't do it. He said they were on the mother board and when he tried to remove them they just kept coming back so once again he couldn't do it. He said contact HP and they could do it. Unable to find anybody at HP that can do it. As you can see nobody can do it so I guess it just cannot be done. That is unless some fine person out there has discovered a way to do it. If thats the case please tell me ho wo do it.

Hello! My ProBook 4540s was working fine until a half hour ago, when I unplugged it to move it and then attempted to plug it back in, and it stopped charging.  When plugging in the power cord (that came with the ProBook when I bought it around 18 months ago), the light above the power jack (and no other lights) flashes white 9 times. I've tried following this fix I found on Google: 1. Turn off the notebook2. remove the battery3. remove the charging adapter4. press + hold the power button for 40 seconds5. insert the charging adaptor only6. press the power button and it supposedly continues but I get stuck at this point, because even plugged in, my ProBook won't start up without the battery in also. Is this a know problem/is there a fix for this?

Hi! is there any solution to delete the forgotten bios password for my 4540s? thanks Klaus

A:4540s Bios password

Hi, Unfortunately,  business machines such as Probooks or Elitebooks have more stringent security than consumer models - they don't produce 'halt codes', the password cannot be derived from the Serial No. and the code is stored in non-volatile memory so removing the RTC cell will not reset the password in this case. If you Contact HP Business support they should be able to send you a customised SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password. Regards, DP-K

This is a new computer and BC50 (Most of yours) is a hardware problem usually. Lets be sure that it is not. If it is you can return the computer. Lets test memory

Run for 8 passes.
Then test each stick in a good slot for 6 passes.
If you have dual channel, the results may be incorrect, if shows pass.

Hello all,

I am stumped on this problem. I have a HP Probook 4540s (Win 7 x64) that has a nic that is not functioning. It acts as if the network cable is disconnected. I've taken the below troubleshooting steps.

- Checked switch port and cable with another device (worked fine).

-Uninstalled and reinstalled the driver directly from HP and then Realtek. The controller is a Realtek PCIe GBe Family Controller. It shows up in Device Manager each time.

- Checked bios to make sure then the device is enabled and disabled LAN/WAN switching.

- Nuked Windows and reinstalled from disk to get a fresh install. I even tried Win 7 x86.

- Tried safe mode (same result).

Any ideas?

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Wow - you have been thru a lot.

I don't have a solution for you, but I'll be watching to see if others do. I support a few people that have this same laptop. Can you tell me how long the cable is that you have been plugging into this laptop. It is possible to generate enough static electricity on a LAN cable to blow the NIC's circuits.

I have a new ProBook 4540s notebook that I shut down over the weekend. I am not sure if I put it into hibernate, sleep, or what as I am still getting use to it. When I tried to turn it on (not plugged in) I got nothing. So I plugged in the power cord and hit the power button again. All it did was the LED above the cord plug blinked about 8 times and nothing else. I let it "charge" overnight and tried again in the morning. Nothing but a blinking LED. I Googled the problem and it said to take the battery out, unplug, and hold the power button down for 20 seconds. I plugged it back in but left the battery out, and still the same thing - flashing LED. HELP! Thanks.

A:the touchpad of probook 4540s i5 freezes after sometime

Hello zamsam,

I understand that your touchpad will freeze.

Do a hard reset.
Turn the computer off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.

This should reset the hardware in the computer.

As you power it back on tap the F2 key. This will load hardware diagnostics.
Run the startup test.

This will test all the hardware in the system and detect any problems.

If the entire test passes, turn off the computer.
As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.

When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.

My laptop is running Windows 10 64-bit.

For the past few weeks my laptop has been turning off unexpectedly.

I've tried with battery only. With battery and power cable and with battery removed and only power cable.

I am using the machine normally and then screen just goes black and power offs - no restart, no hibernation, no shut down. Just instantaneously off.

It's not overheating. Could it be a fan issue?

I don't know - but it's getting quite irritating as I often have many apps open and many files open on each app and takes me 30 mins to get back to where I left off.

Hi,   I went to the HP sitem ( to see if my computer is compatible with the Windows 10 Upgrade (I got an authentication error the last time I tried). But the site no longer has a field to type in the model number of the computer to check for compatibility. Please hurry! I am running out of time. Thanks,Tom

A:HP ProBook 4540s (Model C9K70UT) Windows 10 Compatibility

Hi: When I enter the product number for your PC after clicking on the Upgrade Icon on the link you posted, I get this message... So what that means is HP does not support your notebook with drivers and software to work on W10. That doesn't mean it can't.  It just means there is a possibility that some of the hardware won't work. I looked at the specs for your notebook, and it appears that it should work on W10. I have much older HP business notebooks than the 4540s and they work on W10. I do not use any of the security software such as the fingerprint reader, so I can't say if that will work on yours or not, and mine don't have webcams. There are some W7/W8.1 drivers you may have to install such as the JMicron Card reader driver to get the card reader to work. You can always give it a shot and if it doesn't work, roll back to W7 within 30 days of the upgrade. If you need help finding a driver or so, let me know and I will see what I can do.

I'm having a problem with booting my laptop - but only when cold-booting.

Never heard about this problem before. I can reboot just fine, and if i acces the BIOS and just go straight on exiting, not changing anything - it too boots windows normally without any hitches.

How is booting different from cold-boot to rebooting or through BIOS? I've been toying around with EFI boots, but everything [should be] reverted and i used my windows disc to repair the boot sequence. After the BIOS splash it just lingers and the "starting windows" gui doesnt appear.

Edit and edit2: I've now tried for a couple of times to let it sit, and it does boot up after about 4 minutes consistently. It goes like this:
I press power on. After,
3 seconds the BIOS splash comes on.
7 seconds the screen goes black.
4 min 0 seconds the screen turns off, then immediately turns on again with a black screen.
4 min 3 seconds the BIOS splash reappears.
4 min 7 seconds the "windows starting" gui comes on.
4 min 25 secs windows is booted up and responsive.

So the Black screen is consistently just about 3 minutes and 53 seconds. All BIOS settings are properly set to boot from HDD. No external HDDs or FDDs connected. Even removed the excess drive letter assignments in windows to be safe.
Satas in AHCI for the OS-SSD (and a spindle for storage). Booting from spindle drive is disabled in BIOS.

Problem with Diskeeper 2008
When trying to do a boot time defrag using diskeeper 2008 I get the following message:

Some argument was unrecognized or conflicting, boot-time not running...

The defrag is then skipped leaving my MFT and Paging file badly fragmented
I?ve Googled but can only find one post (That?s right only one post on all of Google) that mentions this error message but no solution, although I did follow a link that hinted at a possible regedit solution.

The possible solution was:
Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager" and remove the string [the name referenced in the message on system startup] from the BootExecute value.
Under normal circumstances only the following would be present:
autocheck autochk *
For Diskeeper it would look like:
autocheck autochk * autocheck AUTONTFS C: PAGE=KEEP DIRS=NONE MFT=MIN

I?ve checked BootExecute in the registry and the string I have reads:
autocheck autochk * autocheck AUTONTFS C: PAGE=MIN DIRS=NONE ENDPAUSE MFT=MIN
I?ve tried to modify string so it reads:
autocheck autochk * autocheck AUTONTFS C: PAGE=KEEP DIRS=NONE MFT=MIN
But after attempting yet another failed boot time defrag I checked the reg only to find that PAGE=KEEP had once again become PAGE=MIN.
I also tried with default autocheck autochk * no luck there either.

This is obviously not a common problem (YET).
Diskeeper 2008 is only new and of course I accept that there?s bound to... Read more

Now every time I try to start the system it gives the message 'Reboot & select proper boot device or insert boot media and select'. From this screen you can't do anything. I'm not able to start in safe-mode either. I can get F12 to work to get to boot manager. This seems simular to the post 'Laptop won't start up' posted by The Duchess. Please help. 1) Check the boot order in bios and make sure the cd & hd are the first two boot devices (in whichever order you prefer)

2) Download BlueScreenView:
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt

I have done a full installation from an original disk while keeping one partition of old data. I have tried both a 2005 and a 2004 editions (from an earlier computer I had). Both went OK but when the computer reboot after the first phase of the configuration, they both failed to boot after the POST phase. I have tried to install Ubuntu 8.04 and it booted successfully and also showed me the option of starting the windows installation, which again failed to boot. I have DELL laptop Inspiron 6400 and using its diagnostic tools, it showed that all components are OK.

I am interested to know if it is possible that the problem is due to:
1) bad cd drive, as it is making some noises.
2) bad memory as I had installed by mistake wrong memory and fixed this once I understoof it is causing some problems.
3) bad harddisk although I had no indication so far there is some problem with it.

I wanted to ask then why linux installed with no problem and to finish this query, I have noticed it is possible to install from a USB stick (to bypass problem 1), but I dont have windows (osx and ubuntu 8.04 only), is there a way to create a bootable windows installation USB stick using a mac or linux?

Thanks and best regards,

A:fresh installation of windows fails to boot but linux boot with no problem

Your confusing to say the least.
The correct way to dual boot Window/Linux is to Install Windows 1st(Always) using all the drive. Then install Linux. All Linux versions will install a Boot manager so as you can then select whichever OS you desire. There are other ways but for someone like you that is the easiest.
Linux will install to a drive that Windows won't, Windows is very particular as to the disk surface, any little fault and it will refuse to install.
May I suggest you look at Puppy Linux 4.1. very, very fast and great for Wireless.

I yesterdy tonight fitted an HP e-pc C10 with a new hard disk, and the disk
has been partitioned, formatted and set as primary. Using the HP
Recovery CD which came with the machine, I installed Windows 2000 on to
the new disk.
The install went without hitches until the very first full boot. Admin
sign-on is completed, then Win 2k spontaneously shuts down and
re-starts. On the re-start we get an error message: Boot failure, disk
not recognised. Press any key to restart the OS.
On pressing the key the boot once again fails. This is very hard to
understand, as the machine successfully booted in to the install
programme twice. Furthermore, the bios detects the hard disk as a
Primary IDE correctly. Yet, at the crucial moment of finalising the OS
boot the system fails.
Anyone any thoughts?

I got a SSD now in my system connected to the first sata port with win7 installed
My previous (mechanical) sata hard disk who was prev. setup on this port is still usable and also has win7 installed on it. i wnat to use it as a experiment setup.
If I connect this old hdd to another sata port say sata 1 or 2.

Can I choose to boot from either the new SSD or the old sata-hdd and run win7 without problems using the BIOS boot order?

I read some scary stuff about this scenario could mess things up because both both drives used to be 'C'

Also I have my BIOS setup with AHCI nowbecause of the SSD. My previous hdd used the standard sata-mode. If I use this old mechanical sata hdd which has windows7 on it and use AHCI in bios will it boot/work?

A:Boot from one of 2 attached drives with BIOS boot order no problem?

As long as you installed windows independently, with the other drive unplugged, there would be no issue choosing either one to boot from the bios.

I doubt if the hard drive will boot in AHCI mode, but test it to see.

I have a strange situation that has developed. I have an XP / Linux Mint dual boot. Everything works fine on the Mint installation, however the XP side has developed some strange characteristics. Firstly system restore will not restore to a previous setting ( Shows up on the restore Menu ).
I want to do a clean reinstall, set the boot order to boot from CD, reads the CD but wont boot up - just resumes to the original programme. Lastly Sound - works fine on the Mint set up but nothing comes out on XP. Device Manager says all systems are working correctly.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Done an AVG Scan - NO threats found.

A:[SOLVED] Restore/ Sound/ Boot problem on Xp dual boot

If you are trying to boot from CD and the CD drive is set to First Boot Device and you put your XP CD in, restart the computer and you do not get the message Press Any Key To Boot From CD/DVD, then either the CD is not First Boot Device, the CD is not bootable or the CD drive is not reading the CD correctly. Try the CD on another computer if it boots that computer then the CD drive needs to be changed.
To repair the other problems you are having in XP, go to Start/Run and type SFC /scannow and press enter. Put the XP CD in and it will replace any missing system files.
Remember if you are successful in reinstalling XP, then you will have to reinstall GRUB as XP will take over the boot order.

Hi all,

I have windows 7 x64 installed, and need to copy that partition to another partition on the same drive, and be able to boot between the two using EasyBCD. One will be normal/office stuff, the other will be music production stuff.

I copied the partition (C) using Acronis (bootCD mode) no problem, then copied that Acronis clone to the new partition (D). Booted back in to windows and used EasyBCD to add the new partition (D) to the boot menu with a new name.

Now when I boot I get the boot choices as expected, but no matter which one I choose, it always boots into the original partition (C)? I've used EasyBCD quite a bit before without problems but this one is driving me nuts.

Any suggestions? Obviously various boot related files are getting copied to the second drive along with all the other files - is this whats causing the problem?

Hello user54, welcome to Seven Forums!

Before we make any specific recommendations will you please post a snip/screen-shot of the entire disk management drive map with a full description as to which drive/partition is which, so we can see what you have going on as there may be a fairly simple way to resolve the situation.

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a snip of that.

I have Asus laptop with OEM Win7 HomeP 64bit on it, I installed Ubuntu 12.04 along side with Win7, didn't know that Ubuntu will be the main boot, I used Ubuntu 11.10 a year a go and Windows was my main boot, I tired several way to retrieve Win7 as main boot but didn't work.

I tried to fully recover Windows, but when finished I get black screen with "getgrub error"
now recovery doesn't work any more.

I want to get rid of Ubuntu for ever, how? without losing my genuine Win7

A:Dual Boot problem, Ubuntu is the main boot

Hello, Mesh F90 and welcome to Seven Forums.

First you to boot to Ubuntu 12.04 and follow this :

1. Open your Terminal.
2. Type grep menuentry /boot/grub/grub.cfg
3. You will got something like :
menuentry "Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1)" {
You will got other lines but you need this, this is last one.
4. Remember this quotes for Windows 7 (ex . "Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1)") (DON'T FORGOT quotes!!!) you will need it later.
5. In Terminal type this : sudo nano -B /etc/default/grub
6. You will got this :

# If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
.... you will have more ....

7. Change GRUB_DEFAULT to value for Windows 7 from menuentry (you remembered it ) (ex. GRUB_DEFAULT="Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1)") (DON'T FORGET quotes).
8. Press CTRL+X and type "y" (without quotes) to save it.
9. Important step! Type in your terminal : sudo update-grub
to save your changes

That is all and Windows 7 will be default now.

Hey all,

I had a problem in my dell800 laptop , which dual boot system (XP and Linux), I did use the BOOTMAGIC and it works fine untill last week.

It didnot able to boot and gave me an error message missing BOOTMaGIC .IMG , and it turns out to be boot in DE (DELL utility) programs over over again, nver let me back to ntfs window xp.

I donot have BOOTMAGIC now with me too, so doesnot know how to reinstall that.

As far as I know my system is not corrupted , may be one or two files may be. I have more valuable data and dont know have any external hard disk to back up.

I want to know how can I set the boot to ntfs and recover the system without losing datas, I am not very good in windows adminstration either.

I did tried BART PE to boot in XP , but didnot help , I could not able to see all the files in ntfs and it show me the file in FAT not in ntfs.

I dont have floppy drive for boot from floppy either, just CD drive.

I really appreciate any suggestion from the experts here.

thanks a lot....

any help ?

Hi v2010,

Welcome to TSG!

If you know whether the dual-boot scheme is implemented with the Grub boot loader there may be a way with a Linux Live CD (e.g. Ubuntu or Knoppix - do you know? Also, is the dual-boot scheme implemented on one or two disks.

The technique would be to boot up with the Live CD, let's say Ubuntu, and then use the System Administration pull-down menu selecting Disks to bring up the Disk manager. The ide... Read more

A:Problem reverting from Dual Boot to Single Boot

Hello Nosmas, welcome to Seven Forums!

Before we make any specific recommendations will you please post a snip/screen-shot of the entire disk management drive map with a full description as to which drive/partition is which, so we can see what you have going on as there may be a fairly simple way to resolve the situation.

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a maximized snip of that.

I had Win XP and Vista set up as dual boot. I have back up images of both using Norton Ghost. I then upgraded the Vista partition with W7 RC and all was fine for several months. Last week I had issues with the XP installation and the only resolution was to put the xp image back on the xp partition. This action has left me with a boot screen with XP and Vista on it and as expected only XP can be booted.
I put the W7 installation disk back in and it recognised the boot screen error and fixed it; (too good to be true I thought!) When booting, I got the choice of XP or W7, so the Vista option had been replaced ) however, there is an error that cannot be fixed and so the boot fails. The PC does the usual reporting to MS looking for a solution but can't find one.
So, will I have to replace the W7 partition with the Vista image and then reinstall the W7 or can I recover this another way? Also, what is the best way to image, individually, OSes, so that the boot screen doesn't get changed?

Hello gazandwiz, and welcome to Windows Seven Forums!

First, verify for me that you do NOT have a 100MB or 200MB "System Partition" at the front of your hard drive.

Based on your post, when you installed Vista, because XP was already there, Vista did not create the "System Partition" but put the "Boot Code" that allowed you to boot XP or Vista from the boot menu ins... Read more

Win 7, 64 bit

I recently replaced a HD due to a RAID failure. Everything mirrored properly.

However, when I boot up the process stops at the Win Boot Manager. On that screen I have the choice of clicking Win 7 or Win 7 Home Premium (Recommended).

If I click on Win7 Home Prem the PC boots up and operates properly.

My bios is set to boot up from HD.

How can I get it to boot up automatically from the HD?

I have a dual boot problem - maybe you can help.

Problem - I cannot get NT to boot on a dual boot system.

Win98 is on the first partition of the first HD (Primary 0) and WinNT is on the first partition of the second HD (Primary 1). Either OS will boot up fine as the first HD.

Win98 was installed on the first HD and once that was completed BootMagic was installed and configured. Once this was working the second HD with a working NT OS was installed. Once rebooted BootMagic detected the NT OS.

When I added NT OS from second HD (Primary 1) this message was displayed.

"Advanced Partitioning Warning!

You are adding and operating system to the menu which is beyond the first hard drive. You may need to enable Advanced Partition Hiding in order for it to boot correctly."

Tried it with "Advanced Partition Hiding" checked.

It boots up fine to W98 in first partition of first HD (Primary 0)

When booting to NT BootMagic comes up fine and then I choose the NT OS.

Next the screen displays
NTDETECT V4.0 Checking Hardware.....
That's it - it stops here. If I reboot it does this again.

I have tried it with and without "Advanced Partition Hiding" checked.

Do you have any idea why NT won't boot up?

Thanks for your assistance,

A:Dual boot - Boot Magic Problem

I've had a look on NTDETECT and this is what I have found from here:

Build a Windows NT boot disk and use it to continue Setup.

This allows Windows NT to continue and convert the boot partition to NTFS, rendering it bootable.

Its quite detailed, so its best if you look at the link, instead of me posting it all.

Just like the title says. I installed linux and grub, which kinda screwed up my windows boot. Long story short, i used rescue CD to do the fixboot => fixmbr => rebuild bcd.
After that i wanted to install linux again, but none of my flash drives are recongnized as being bootable. I tried a dozen times(for real) with 4 different distros, and 4 different writing utilities, but none of them worked. Windows bootable usb gets recognized in boot selection menu, the others don't. This happened only after using rescue CD(i just don't realise how that could have influenced things). I tested the flashdrives on my 2nd PC and they work, so we can be sure the drives are good.
I don't know what settings to change in bios anymore, i tried usb2 legacy enabled / disabled. I tried boot selection as USB hdd,Cd, zip fdd. Usually the usb drives should be recognized under the hdd section, they are not there either. What to do?
P.S. I posted in this section, but i don't know if i am right. Feel free to move the post. Also i posted in 7forums(i use win7) because i think it's a rescueCD generateb problem, i just don't understand it.

Well just a suggestion mate is do it from an optical disk I don't like booting from sticks personally.

Plus I prefer a bootable Ubuntu disk and just use the try version as I have had many problems in the past with dual boots

If you are trying to just reinstall the 7 clean see this again I use the disk variety

I have an Compaq Presario R3020 Laptop with an AMD Athlon 2800 Processor.

Okay, let me start at the beginning.
Last week, I performed my bi-annual format and re-installation of windows XP (for performance). I copied all my documents, media, soft installation packages, etc. to my external hard drive. then i re-installed XP Home (SP1). I installed all the drivers & my software and moved (Was taking up too much space on my External) all my stuff back to my internal HD..
Everything was running smoothly. About a week later, i began getting these strange
"could not write to C:\c$d4ci please blah blah.." (c$d4ci isnt the actual directory, it just remember it had a "$" as the second character).. I ran my fully updated antivirus (Panda Platinum 4) and detected nothing. I ignored the errors.
Next day my comp is running super slowly.. I open up my process manager and saw a process called PavProxy running. i closed it and my comp's speed increased dramatically, but i continued to get the read/write errors. I thought "Spyware!"
So i run adaware personal and it freezes. I decide to leave it be for now because i had a lot of things to do. Check out my computer next day, its doing something. Adaware closed itself completely and BitComet (My P2P/torrent software is going psycho, flashing and screwing up all my download tasks.) So i close it, and notice that Adaware mysteriously "closed itself".. okay.. i reboot, and stuff works. (still ... Read more

hey guys. i have seemed to run into a problem and some help would be appreciated. the story goes like this.

yesterday i came home with a semi brand new 60gb maxtor hard drive in my hand. i have a 120 gb hard drive already in my dimension 4550, and i thought hey, i got this for free from a friend so why not use it. I take the original drive out so it was less annoying for me to work in that small space, and put both drives back in. i must have gone wrong somewhere because when i booted up, it said that primary drive 0 was not found. after a while, i got the computer to recognize both drives. the 120 gb is a western digital and the 60 gb is a maxtor. even though the computer is recognizing both drives, when i go to boot, after the first part (the DELL sign and the loading bar), it is just a black screen with a blinking _. and after that it will boot to cd because as of now i have the xp professional installation disk in there.

now, when i run the ide drive diagnostics under the boot screen it recognizes both drives but this one word scares me. it looks something like this

wdc (the western digital drive) - thenabunchofnumbers - Fail - return code: 7
then the same thing with the maxtor drive underneath that.

i wouldnt really have much of a problem just re-installing windows onto the original drive since i didnt have anything that was irreplacable on there, but when i go to system recovery and the chkdsk option, it recognizes that there is an installation of windows o... Read more

A:hard drive problem / windows xp boot problem

Hi exodent and welcome to the TS Forum

you dont say how you connected the drives, or if they are IDE or SATA, did you

a) put them both on the same cable and set the jumpers correctly.
b) put them on seperate cables but have a CD or DVD on the same cable somewhere.

If its A then its possible that you have set them so that Primary drive 0 is now Primary drive 1 and thats why it wont boot.

Take out the drives and start again from scratch, find the one with the OS and make sure the jumper is set to Master and if you are using a cable that allows you to have 2 drives on it make sure it goes at the end of the cable and see if it boots.

If it does you now need to set the other drive as Slave and put it on the same cable and use the other IDE connector .

If it then misbehaves again and everything is set correctly then its possible that you have a drive that doesnt like having a Slave device attached to it, some IDE devices are like and your only choice is to put the 2nd drive onto the secondary IDE channel, again make sure you check the jumpers of any other devices you have on the channel.

Lastly some BIOS's allow you to set the boot device by actual connected device, such as primary device 0, primary device 1, for those that have this type of BIOS it means that they can have 1 or more drives with an OS and use the BIOS to decide which boots, other BIOS's just have the choice of HD or CD or Floppy in the boot order.

When I try to boot into windows 7, it keeps running the boot fixing thing. After its finished it runs again. So I decided to re install windows 7. But I need more storage to install it. How can I boot into windows 7 when it cant get fixed by boot solver or it cant be re installed?

A:Windows 7 boot problem and installation problem.

Try working through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot . You'll need to disinfect to make sure it will repair, then confirm the Active partition and run the REpairs as given. Everything is there to try to get it started, up to if necessary rescuiing your files to run Recovery or Reinstall.

If this is factory OEM and it requires running Recovery or Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 you can upload 7gb storage to MS Skydrive with each WIndows Live/Hotmail ID. Later your can even Sync Any Folder to Your SkyDrive Account.

Basically this problem is getting worse, my laptop only boots when the dvd drive is ejected when powered up, the drive drawer must be out when you turn the power on or else it just remains a blank screen, lights flash, fans power up and then it all dies, and repeats the process, however with the draw open it may turn on, i'd say 75% of the time, but it used to be every time, obviously the problem is getting worse, also when this happens and I do eventually get windows on I get a message saying windows recovered from the blue screen of death, with me running windows seven I get this

Hey Guys,

If anyone could help me with this, it would be great. Right...

The other day my computer started throwing up error messages. I wasn't using it at the time. The only thing I had done recently was install the latest Nokia PC Suit.
The error messages were along the line of "file not a proper windows image...."
It was impossible to do a lot as most things failed, and I could only just managed to do a few things in safe mode. I managed to run a registry cleaner which got rid of 100's of files. I then managed to run chkdsk/f, this also cleaned up alot of files. After a reboot I got the message ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt. I managed to re-install this file. I thought all good. BUt now it boots and got passed the windows logo and then nothing! Just blank screen, nothing happens, hdd silent!!
So if you guys have any idea's as to whats wrong, fix's pretty please let me know.

Mucho thanks!

Boot into Safe Mode and remove your monitor and/or video card from Device Manager (right click on My Computer, select Properties, the Hardware tab, then click on the Device Manager button), then restart the computer and power up as usual.

Note that it may take a minute or two extra to start, as Windows will load in the default drivers for your monitor and GPU.

Once you're back into Windows, install the latest drivers for your video card and monitor.

Well I pressed F1 and it went from that screen to an all black screen with a blinking - It looked kinda like a dos prompt, but I couldn't type anything.

I shut it down and tried to start it again, but the same thing happened.

By this time I'm ready to pull all my hair out, get the gun and shoot this piece of junk.

I finally ended up reformatting, and it worked fine till I shut it down. The next time I restarted it, it did the same thing. I ended up reformatting again, abnd just not shutting it down at all. I have a couple questions.

When you say you reformatted, how did you go about this?
Running XP Home or Pro? Do you have the cd?
Do you know what file system NTFS or Fat32 and any partitions?
Any new hardware or software recently?
