BDDVDRW DVD/CD Drive unable to read media

Q: BDDVDRW DVD/CD Drive unable to read media

I have an HP Envy Phoenix 810-135qe Windows 7 (64-bit) machine. The problem is with my BDDVDRW DVD/CD drive. It was working fine
up until a week ago, now it won't open/play any media. The strange thing is that the drive shows up in Device Manager and says the device
is working properly. It also shows up in diskmgmt.msc as well. I tried uninstalling it in Device Manager and restarted the computer and then
it worked fine. However on the next computer session I had the same problem. I tried the uninstall/restart again and it worked for a second
time. I experienced the same problem on the next computer session, but then any further attempts at uninstall/restart wouldn't get it to work
at all. So having done that, I'm fairly convinced there's a corrupted windows configuration or registry file somewhere. I did check the HP site
to see if there was a new driver available but there was none.

I formatted my computer 2 weeks ago, and ever since my disc drive hasn't been working properly. Its a HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW GGC-H20L.

I am unable to play blu ray movies/dvd movies/games on dvd discs. When I put any of those types of discs in my drive contiously spins them, obviously trying to read them. I open up my computer, and it says its empty. Occasionally it'll work by itself, or i'll restart with the disc in the drive and a couple minutes after start up it'll work.

It has NO problem at all reading any other types of discs like music cds, or games on regular discs.

I've tried to manually start the disc for example, when I put in the sims 3, I open up its launcher and try to load it that way and it tells me I need to put the disc in the drive even though it is already in there.

I compared the driver version with the most recent version I found on the internet and its up-to-date with what I found(Driver Version= 6.1.7061.17514). But I was unable to actually find a download for the driver. I also uninstalled the disc drive and it installed automatically but nothing changed.

I've formatted my computer numerous times, and since I never made discs for windows 7 I use the vista discs, then upgrade to windows 7 afterwards and it has NEVER caused any problems before.

So is it a hardware issue? Or software? It only reads blu-ray/dvd discs when it feels like it, but any other discs it reads normally......

What can I do?! This is CRAZY already. HELP!!!!!!!!!!

It was working fine up until a week ago. Now here is the very weird part... when I uninstall it in device manager and restart the computer it works. I was looking for an updated driver on the HP Support site but there were none.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I own a sony vaio vgn-nrs31z/s running windows vista home premium. The dvd drive was working properly during the first few weeks since I owned the laptop. After a while it slowly started performing poorly. At first it couldn't write an audio cd properly and after a while it couldn't read most of the dvds. I tried unistalling drivers and rebooting. System restored the drivers but it didn't work. I ran microsoft fix it center, didn't do the trick either. Are there any suggestions. I 'd appreciate any help.

Well, I've been having this problem for a while, but now it's getting a bit out of hand. When I go to stand-by and get out of stand-by, it says 'Unable to read/write from drive C:' and other times (just regular surfing, playing CS, etc) the HD locks up for about 10 secs. It also does a thing I'd like to call "HD-turns-off-then-turns-back-on-again-with-a-grinding-sound".

I've tried reformatting which had some '...trying to recover' errors. And I've tried ScanDisk on thorough A LOT of times and it came up with some bad sectors on some of the scans. I've also tried Western Digital's disk drive utils. but it has some weird error now saying the IDE isnt plugged in correctly, but it is.

A:Hard Drive acting weird. Unable to read/write on drive C:, and other errors

Hi trunten

A grinding sound with a hard drive and many bad sectors is not good. It sounds like your drive has bit the dust. Since it is 40 gig there is a good chance that it is still under a warranty as most hard drives come with at least a 1 year warranty and many have a three year warranty. You could recheck the drives jumpers (master/slave) and reseat the data cable but I don't think that will help. BOL

Hi all. I am desperate for some help here. Usually I can find my answers on the web, but this one has me stumped.

I built a system about two months ago with parts from Newegg.
? 250G Maxtor SATA
? Nec DVD+/-RW ND-3550A
? AMD 64 3500+ (Venice)
? 2 gig Corsair D400 RAM
? 7800 GT 250

Worked great for about 3 weeks, and then it hit the fan. I started seeing errors that OS files were missing or corrupt. I reformatted, and reloaded XP fearing that a virus had gotten by Norton. In time, I found the MaXBlast test suite that told me the drive was failing. The drive was RMA-ed.

While waiting for the new drive, I borrowed an 80 gig IDE WD drive from a friend. Put it in, reinstalled everything.. no problems.

The new drive arrived, installed it and started loading software. The DVD recorder doesn?t read DVDs that it created. Reformatted and reloaded the OS. Software is fine but the DVD drive will still not read DVDs that it made earlier. It sees them as blank CDs. The drive will write a DVD though.

Removed drive from device manager, reloaded drivers, updated firmware, physically removed the hard drive, reinstalled the hard drive, reinstalled everything, updated Windows XP with every update? no luck.

I swapped the HD so that the 80 gig was back in. DVD drive works fine. Swapped them back so that the 250 gig Matxor is in? can?t read DVDs that it created?

I am running Windows XP SP3, and my DVD drive is a LG GH22NS30.

The problem that I am having is that when I put a CD or DVD into the drive, most times it does not recognize the disc and will not allow me to access it. When this happens, I reboot my machine, and then it will allow me to access the first disc that I put in, but if I change that disc for another one I cannot access the second disc. Has anyone had a similar problem?

A:DVD drive doesn't read media

OK - so, after much poking around on the internet and on my computer settings, here is what I have done.

In Device Manager, under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers I went into the properties for the SATA controller that my DVD drive is connected to. It was set to use the DMA transfer mode. I changed this to PIO, and now it is reading all the discs that I put into it. Is this a proper fix for my problem? Which transfer mode is best?

Device Manager says my DVD/CD drive is working properly but it doesn't read the CDs (media) I am putting in. I have already tried updating the driver, uninstalling the device and restarting my computer to reinstall it. I checked the forum and downloaded
and ran the MrFixit that was suggested for someone else and it did not fix the problem and sent me back to the forum for additional help. Before I take the computer somewhere to get another DVD drive (cables can be checked at that time), is there anything
else I can do?  I have a Dell Inspiron computer with Vista Home Premium 64 bit OS. Thanks.

I recently use a recovery disc to restore my computer back to factory settings. The first time I turned my computer one, I recieved some sort of notice asking me if I wanted to disable my CD/RW capability in order to have DVD-R capabilities? I can't quite remember. Anyway, after all was said an done, I put in a CD to the the CD drive and it was not readable. After running my computer for a little bit longer, some of the CDs that worked eariler, no longer worked. I've been able to rip about half of my CDs onto my computer, and the other half go undetected (all my CDs are store bought, none are burned) . My DVD playback was really choppy too.

Things I've done to try and fix this have consisted of:
1. Uninstalling my D: Drive.
2. Uninstalling my IDE channels
3. Running the recovery disc again
4. Making sure all drivers were up to date
5. I've put the discs into another computer to make sure that it wasn't the discs.
6. I completed all the windows updates recommended.
7. Went into the properties of my CD/DVD drive and "Enable CD recording on this device."

Are there any other alternatives to get my CD/DVD drive back to 100% functioning? This could be a hardware problem, but considering it worked fine until the recovery makes me sceptical.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Within the last 2 months my CD ROM drive doesn't read my disks. In 'My Computer', the drive exists (drive letter E. I'm able to press the 'open' button on the drive, opening it for me to put a CD into. When it's opening, the LED flashes on the drive.

The problem is when I have a CD in the drive, go to the drive in 'My Computer', and right-click to open the drive. I'm told to insert a CD.

How could I fix my problem so that I could read CDs again?

Boot with a boot disk w/cdrom support and go to a dos prompt. Try getting a directory on the drive there.

My Sony DW-U12A DVD burner does not recognize media when I insert into the drive. This includes blank media, music cd or even an actual movie DVD.

The drive is visible in the control panel. I checked the 1st and secondary channels and they are in DMA mode. I uninstalled and rebooted for the device to be recognized by XP. I checked in the bios and auto run is "1". I opened the case and made sure the cables were secure. I believe that 2.0e is the latest firmaware for this drive.

Are there any other ideas I should try. I use the drive to burn my tv series and sporting events. I also use ERUNT so I went back a few days in registry and still no luck.

There has been no noise to indicate the drive was starting to fail. I know that sometimes the drive will fail with no warning. It has been a good drive. If I have to repalce this eide drive, can someone recommend a good drive that has excellent reading capability. I am not overly concerned with burn speed, just burn quality.

A:DVD Drive doesn't/read recognize media

Hi there,

Unfortunately, it does sound like your drive has failed. Luckily, DVD Burners are not as expensive as they used to be. A decent drive can be bought for under $40, shipped. I personally would recommend a Lite-ON model. I run a computer repair shop and that is the only brand I will use because they are not as likely to fail like other burners. Also, they come with a great warranty.

Hope this helps.

I have two questions about the BD-Rom drive in my Asus N53SV laptop.

When I first got my N53SV-DH72 laptop, I created the Recovery Discs using DVD media. I then installed a new HDD and a clean Windows 7 Prof install, removing the original HDD and all of it's pre-loaded software in case I sold the laptop later and buyer wanted original drive and software. Since then, I have been ripping songs from CD to iTunes and both the DVD write and CD ripping have worked fine. Blu-ray playback was never tested.

3 years down the road I am finding that the BD-Rom drive is intermittantly reading CDs when playing back in either Windows Media Player or iTunes. Some songs play fine, others hang partway thru playback. Other CDs are not even recognized by iTunes. I can play DVDs OK on Windows Media Player though I haven't played a movie all the way through. Blu-rays will not play at all.

The BD-Rom drive is a Philips Lite-On DS-4E1S. I have ordered a replacement drive by a company called HIGHDING thru Amazon/CBear Computers.

I checked the BD-Rom drive on my G73JH-A3 and it has had limited testing. DVD write worked when I created the DVD Recovery disks. This laptop also had the HDD replaced with a new HDD and a clean Windows 7 Prof install. Most of the drivers were installed. Blu-ray will not playback on this drive either. The BD-Rom drive on the G73JH laptop is a Matshita UJ141AS.

So, my questions:

Is my assumption correct that all or most BD-Rom drives are the same (physically and f... Read more

Well first you need a media player that plays Bluray (is allowed to play bluray). It is not a straight line solution.
Check out these threads:

If you are using a bluray capable program: if you are experimenting using just one bluray disk, try a different one from a different producer. Sometimes the DRM piracy scheme on one disk can gum up the works.

A few months ago I had two USB drives plugged into my computer along with an external hard-drive. Ever since then every time I try to install a program off of the internet the message "Unable to Read F Drive" pops up and the installation quits. I tried calling Dell but my warranty is up and it'll cost 40 dollars for them to fix. This has not especially been a problem but now I cannot install a program I need for school, and all the things in the external hard-drive are being displayed as H drive, which has wreaked havoc on my iTunes library. If anyone knows a quick way to dispose of this problem it would be greatly appreciated.

I have recently bought a Seagate 9SD2A4-500 (500GB External Hard Drive). It works like an absolute charm on every computer in my house (One version of XP and another Win 7). However, it does not work on my own computer.
It seems that this hard drive using USB 2.0 Cannot be read. When placed into my PC, (Win 7), it does recognise a device has been added, driver updates occur but it believes it is a "Initio Default Controller" I am unable to access it, reformat it or in any way change it. I have took advice from other sites and forums, for example I already have:

Used Seagate tools, but it doesn't work as the device is not recognised as it is an Initio default controller.
I have uninstalled content, reinstalled without allowing updates to happen, but a device is not recognised.
Used different USB cables, for example USB-B --> two USB A's so it can have more power, but it makes extremely loud noises and does not recognise it, and I think it is more damaging than helpful.
I have already determined that it is not the USB cable (USB-B to A) as it works on other computers. Similarly, it is not my own USB ports, as other devices work perfectly. It does have warranty, but bearing in mind that it works on other computers, I don't believe it is the hard drive's problem. It is most likely to do with some settings that I haven't considered so far.

Please can you help wise wizards of this forum!

Thanks in advance,

My friend gave me a Lacie 160 GB HD. He has a Mac and there are only firewire ports on the external hard drive. I bought a firewire card and plugged everything in.

Initially it doesn't show up and is missing the drivers so i download enum1394.sys. And then it stops giving me that message "new hardware is found."

However, the Hard Drive doesn't show up in My Computer.

Left side: My Computer
Right Side: Disk Management - I can see the Hard Drive it's called "Disk 1" and says "unallocated"

The second pic just shows just shows properties and such (maybe helpful?):

I was informed I should Partition/Format it. But there are 140 GB of files on here that I must have. I can not delete them. I just need to view the files.

Could it be I downloaded the wrong enum1394 file? Is it because it's a Mac? What can I do?

The problem started when I tried to burn FLAC files to a blank CD using Nero. I recieved an error message stating that the burn failed, so I closed Nero. Oddly enough however, the DVD drive was still revving as though it was burning the CD, and it wouldn't stop or eject the disc. My only option was to restart my system, and after that the drive cannot read any disc or burn any disc using any program. I reinstalled the driver for the drive but that has no effect on the problem. When burning with Nero I now receive a "Power Calibration Error." The drive is a Lite-On DVDRW LH-18A1P.

I've been trying to watch my Big Bang Theory Season 4 DVDs. I've started watching discs 1,2 and two and they're recognized fine in my drive but disc 3 isn't even recognized and the drive says please insert a disc.

A:DVD Drive unable to read certain DVDs but most of them are readable.

Hum maybe something wrong with the codec or damage to the initial read area - look at the very inner "start" surface as they read disks from the centre to the outside just like the old vinyl records used to read from out to in ( a very long spiral).

Look for scuffs and scratches though they tend to have to be pretty bad on DVD's. Blu ray disks are a little more susceptible because they use a finer "burn" line than the ordinary DVD's

I don't know where you are but if the problem is damage either take it back to the seller or try and repair the damage by buffing with some silver cleaning polish DON'T use brass cleaner as it uses solvents and will "melt" the disk surface the silver polish like Silvo is water based.
It takes a bit of elbow grease but works fine for me on DVD's and CD's and sue mainly an in to out cleaning action (straight strokes) .

You can but cleaning kits but in my experience they do more damage than good especially the ones that use a spinning disk that "wanders in an elliptical fashion over the disk surface

It could also just be a bad manufactured disk.

I've been searching for a solution for this problem for a while now but all fixes does not work for me. I have a lenovo USB optical drive (cd/dvd) and it cant read my burnt disc. - also tried disabling uac (someone suggested that)
- change the drive letter path of the optical drive

When I attempt to play an Audio CD I am prompted with the following dialog: We have determined that Windows Media Player cannot accurately read your CD drive digitally. Windows Media Player will therefore switch to reading your CD drive in analog mode. Your CDs will play, but the following items will not work when playing CDs: Visualizations, SRS Wow effect, Graphic Equalizer.

Could someone please explain what's happening all of a sudden? WMP was playing fine until recently.

Someone suggested that I change my drive designations back to default. I recently switched letter designations for my burner and my DVD-ROM drive. I attempted to switch them back by going to Device Manager but was unable to. My CF Card reader had taken over one of the previous letter designations of one of the other two drives. So I went into Device Manager to straighten things out, but now I can't even find my CF Card reader listed. It was there before! In fact, it still works, but for some reason it's not showing up in Device Manager. I find all of this really confusing. If I could find it perhaps I could get the three letter designations back to what they ought to be, and maybe then WMP would work properly.

I would really appreciate help with this very annoying problem.

Thank you,

A:[Solved] Windows Media Player cannot read CD drive digitally

Okay, I solved my own problem again. All I had to do was go into Device Manager > CD-ROM and remove something called NERO-IMAGEDRIVE 2. Doing so allowed me to switch my D and E drives back to their default settings. I had recently reversed them and found that I couldn't switch them back until I first got rid of IMAGEDRIVE 2.

Anymore it seems that every day I have another annoying problem pop up, some undoubtedly of my own making.

Existing CD/DVD drive doesn't recognize DVD media after installing DVD-RW+/- in separate bay. Both are on the IDE (ribbon). Existing CD/DVD drive is set to "Slave" and the DVD-RW+/- is set to "Master". OS XP Home. Sony tech says this is a common problem and that I can't have both the CD/DVD drive and the DVD-RW+/- hooked up to my computer internally. He suggested I purchase an external DVD writer. Any ideas on how to make what I have work?

A:Existing CD/DVD drive doesn't read DVD media after installing DVD-writer

Can you hook up one of the drives on the same cable as the hard drive? (I know I can't due to case / ribbon location on my pc).

Try setting both jumpers to cable select.

The only other think I can think of is upgrade your mother board bios, download the most current mother board chipset drivers.

If it's a compatibility issue with your board or the drives that can't be fixed.

I would get an external fireware/usb enclosure that allows you to but one of your drives into the enclosure then hook it up to your pc. The other route is to by an PCI IDE controller card and hook up you components differently (one drive on MB IDE other on PCI IDE).

Your DVD burner should also act as CD/DVD reader as well.

On my system I have a CD-R/RW and a DVD-/+ R R/W Dual layer drive one IDE channel.

I have an old Quantum Fireball SE 3.5 Series HD (capacity unknown). The owner tells me it runs on her old computer. I've hooked it up to my Dell Inspiron 1150 using a USB 2.0 to IDE cable and transformer. The power cable is connected. You can hear the disk turn. But my system doesn't read any other drive being present.
I tested this using a Seagate ST320014A. Again you can hear the disk turn. It 'registers' on the system but you can't read the disk.
I would appreciate any suggestions.

I have:
Platform: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Machine Type: Intel
System Version: 5.01.2600
Processor: Pentium 4 (Speed 2398 MHz)
Physical RAM Installed: 254 MB
MSHTML Version: 6.00

Hello all, I know this might not be a big thing to most, but hear's the problem...I've got an HP ZV5340US notebook (I know, just the letters HP have you cringing right about now) that has everything but a floopy drive. So I purchase a generic, no name USB floppy drive, boot-up the laptop, connect the cable, windows recognizes it and installs drivers for it and everythings ok...not. after slipping it a floppy and accessing the drive, I get a familiar message stating the floppy is not formatted...would you like to format now? At first, I say no, and then get a message stating the drive can not read the disc. Take the disc out and re-insert, get the same message, only this time clicking yes in answer to the format question...only to be greeted with a "can not format disc" message.

My question is did I get a piece of junk or do I need to enable something within Windows XP Home Ed. or it's registry? The floppies I tried are read/written to without a problem on another laptop that has a built-in floppy drive. I've also tried both the drivers XP loaded when it recognized the new hardware AND the drivers that came via CD with the drive.

I have an external drive that was formatted FAT32 which I have been using with my XP laptop for the past year. I have data on it that I want to transfer to my Windows 7 laptop. However, as soon as I connect it to my Windows 7 laptop, it comes up with a message saying "You need to format the disk before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" I assumed that Windows 7 was unable to read the drive because it was FAT32, so I connected it back to my XP laptop and ran the conversion: CONVERT E: /FS:NTFS - The conversion completed successfully and I connected the drive back to my Windows 7 laptop. But it still came up with the same message that the drive needs to be formatted. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

A:Windows 7 unable to read external drive formatted FAT32

What I would do, is format the drive using Windows 7 then copy the files with your XP then copy them over to your 7. Windows 7 uses NTFS system while XP can use both so if the drive is formatted with 7 then XP can backwards convert it. Windows 7 kinda sucks when it comes to accessing drives. I don't know why they did that but oh well.....

A:hp bddvdrw ct21l ata device help

Hi, First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below. Windows 7 Vista Check if the drive is now working. If the drive is not working, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Click to open the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.  Right click on the first channel and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When uninstalled repeat the process for each channel.  Also if an ATA controller is listed, right click and uninstall this, again not deleting drivers if asked. Then open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked. Reboot the PC and let Windows reinstall the devices.  Check the drive again. If it still isn't working, run the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below again. Windows 7 Vista Next, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works. Best wishes, DP-K

This computer came with a Blu Ray disc player BDDVDRW CH30L BC56. So far it has operated well but I recently purchased an SHM SACD the drive does not recognize the disc at all. Is there a firmware update or same way to get the drive to recognize the disc. The drive recognizes all other discs including regular SACD's but not the SHM SACD. I have tried several different software media solutions (Foobar, J River, Korg) that recognize DSD files and SACD's as well but when checking the drive itself in a "my PC" settings it does not show up as recognizing the disc at all. All software players say the drive is empty.Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have searched through several "optical drives not working" posts on this forum but am hoping there may be a test or two someone would know of doing before I try to price a new drive. It is the hp BDDVDRW CT21L SATA CdRom Device (BD reader/DVD and CD read/write/RW drive) on an HP Pavilion dv7 laptop. Warranty expired as of 07/2010. I was able to read disks earlier today. Put a data disk (written by friend, used in the recent past w/o trouble) and it will not read it. Light blinks a few times, you can hear it try to spin up and read then it goes quiet. Double-click the drive under My Computer and up pops a window stating Insert Disk. Cleaned then opened to check connections to no avail. Any other ideas/tests?

Thank you for your time,

A:hp BDDVDRW CT21L SATA CdRom Device not working

Test with both burned and commercial discs. Also try CD's.

In any case, if it won't recognize discs, the drive is very likely faulty.

hey, my computer generally reads disks, music cd's, dvd's, and games (new like sims 3, and old like theme hospital and shogun total war)

ive just got anno 2070 and put in the disk, but its not recognizing it at all, when i first put the disk in, it whirs, as it knows there is a disk there, and a disk icon appears next to the cursor, but then nothing, no disk appears in My computer, and when i click on the drive it asks me to insert a disk, i have tested the disk on a different computer running vista, anno 2070 runs perfectly, and also says it does run on windows 7, i have also tested other disks since putting the game into the windows 7 computer, which work fine, and checked whether the disk can be read in a virtual machine (windows xp in this case), which it cant as i expected, i have run the Microsoft disk checker and all it said was that the disk was unreadable, but the vista computer proves it is readable.

any tips on what to do next? i really want to get playing this

A:dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

I would think that your optical drive and that particular brand DVD media don't go together well. ( I have an Imation DVD+R DL that my Samsung drive only reads at times but not most of the time. On four other drives - a Sony, a Liteon, an Asus and a Plextor - the media is recognised and accessible without any problems. The Samsung drive is clean, has the latest firmware, can read and write other DVD media. So where am I? )

You may just try cleaning the lense with a Lense Cleaner CD. If it does not help, try burning anno 2070 to another known-to-be-good brand media at a lower speed.

A:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

Hi there!

Problem is pretty straightforward. Whenever I try to open a video file (whether it be .wmv, .avi, etc) through the File -> Open menu, whatever media player I'm using (except Winamp... that works for some reason) crashes! Both VLC and another program says that the "ModName" was msyuv.dll in the error report, so I guess that's a start. I've done full system virus scans, full system spyware scans, defragged twice with Diskeeper, cleaned and defraged my registry, downloaded a new copy of msyuv.dll, deleted my msyuv.dll in C:\Windows\System32 and rebooted (which forces System Restore to install a new copy), and NONE of this has changed a thing. Well, the only thing it has changed is that in some programs, the video file now opens after a 5-10 freeze (but the PLAYERS still keep crashing... applications that edit video files only open), but when trying to add a second, it crashes again. I've also uninstalled/rolled back WMP11 and removed all it's runtime modules, but that hasn't changed a thing, and I'm also fully up-to-date on Windows Updates.

As you can see this is a bit of a doozy. One thing to note is that I can still view video files fine if I find them through the Windows Explorer and right click -> Open with <player name>. Going through File -> Open causes the program to crashes and/or freeze. Winamp is ABLE to view videos through File -> Open, but no other player can (not even applications like VirtualDub are able to open video me... Read more

Hello, I recently installed a game which came on a DVD disk
The install had a few problems, and it needed to restart several times. (It looked as though it was unable to read the disc, which resulted in a failed install)
Eventually it installed and all was fine.
The game needs a disc check to start up, and so it must be able to read the DVD before the game can start. It was able to read it, and I quit and restarted the game several times with no problems. However, I tried another game restart and the launcher could NOT read the DVD ("no disk in drive" error). I re-inserted the disc and it worked.

Later, I had the same trouble multiple times. It worked one final time, but I later tried to start the game (and thus read the disc) and it refused to acknowledge a disc was in the drive. I restarted, I removed filters by editing the registry, I uninstalled the DVD drive drivers and even tried blowing air into the drive. I have also tried microsoft's "fix it" software for the drive. None of these methods resolved the problem.

The drive cannot read any other DVDs either (opening them from "computer" just opens the disk tray and states there is no disc in the drive)
The drive IS able to read CDs, which obviously means something (I'm not sure if there are two different lasers or something?)
For this reason I'm leaning towards a software fault, but I don't know what to do to remedy it.

The drive in question: TSSTcorp DVD+RW TS-H653F AT... Read more

The cursor shows the CD icon next to it then when it stops spinning the drive reads as empty. I have treid many programs and different brands of media (both suggested and not -- by TDK). Please list Computer Make and Model (if known) and Optical Device also. It should be listed in Device Manager.
You could try to put it in another computer as a test, or look for updated firmware for the Optical Drive.

So I turned my computer off last night, everything was working fine. Then when I woke up today, I turned it on and BAM, could no longer read my SSD (Vertex 2) and would get a message telling me to insert my windows install disk.

So I decided to humour it, and tried putting the disk in, checked the recovery options and was unable to find the SSD to perform recovery on. I carried on a few more steps to install a fresh copy and it wasn't listed there either.

I spent about a hour fiddling around with the hardware, swapping around wires and harddrives to check if it was the wires messing me about, turns out everything worked fine.

I then reset my BIOS and then checked the boot settings, but my SSD wasn't even displayed on the list.

So I was stumped.

On the POST screen, when the SSD was not plugged in, nothing would show up in that slot, however when the SSD is plugged in it says 'None'

(SSD currently plugged into C1 Master)

This problem has been bugging me all day, and I was hoping someone might know what it going on ?

A:Unable to read SSD

Have you tried to plug the SSD into another SATA slot on your board? If that dosen't work, try and connect a spare Hard Drive to the cable your SSD is currently connected to - just to rule out whether it's actually the SSD or a problem with a SATA port on the motherboard.

Now according to my research this SHOULD be a x64 system, so I used the x64 Recovery/Repair disk I made back when I had 8.0 (but should work?) . It loads the HP logo screen then just keep circling endlessly. Using my 8.1 laptop I made a Recovery/Repair USB drive and tried that but it doesn't work either.
Should I let the Recovery/Repair go for 2 hours (typical repair time) or am I SOL??

A:"Your PC needs repair" - Will not read any recovery media

Do you have the installation disk? If so, try that.
Keep us posted.

Dear Genius Helpers:
I have done so much to fix my laptop, XP media, SP2 that I'm not sure where to begin. As it says in the title, protection expired I wasn't aware of it and I've been working to fix the damage for about 2 weeks. I have cleaned all temp files several times, run: Adaware, CCleaner, Windows Defender, Advanced Windows Care, ComboFix and deep clean A-Squared. Found many bad files, deleted them. I installed Home version of Avast. I have attached a ComboFix log and would love for someone to take a look and see if there is something obvious that is causing the one thing [or more] I need help with: it takes forever to start [I've actaully turned off all start-up items] and very often, after starting [that is, desktop is up, folders are displayed on desktop and I have accesss to "start", etc] it goes into a deep sleep, screen is still on, nothing opens. I wait for sometimes 10-15 minutes, THEN when it "wakes up", every program I clicked on, every move I made, happens in split seconds. Sometimes it can open 15 windows, all stacked neatly behind one another. Thank you for any advice you can give. Deb

Hi all. I am desperate for some help here. Usually I can find my answers on the web, but this one has me stumped.

I built a system about two months ago with parts from Newegg.
250G Maxtor SATA
Nec DVD+/-RW ND-3550A
AMD 64 3500+ (Venice)
2 gig Corsair D400 RAM

The DVD recorder doesnt read DVDs that it created. Reformatted and reloaded the OS. Software is fine but the DVD drive will still not read DVDs that it made earlier. It sees them as blank CDs. The drive will write a DVD though.

Removed drive from device manager, reloaded drivers, updated firmware, physically removed the hard drive, reinstalled the hard drive, reinstalled everything, updated Windows XP with every update no luck.

I swapped the HD so that the 80 gig was back in. DVD drive works fine. Swapped them back so that the 250 gig Matxor is in cant read DVDs that it created

Both hard drives have the same Win XP media center OS, drivers, and Norton loaded on them.

I then... Read more

I always had a problem with scratching my CD's, so in 1998 I started making backups of all my music on my computer. Worked great until a few years ago when I got a decent stereo for my computer.

I keep everything Music\Artist\Album\ and I'm having problems because people are moving one folder into another one. And I just noticed today that I'm missing a Zeppelin CD that I remember getting as a gift when I was 19 (NOT COOL).

I've been looking around online all day for a solution and I can't seem to find anything. There are a ton of file security programs that will hide everything, but that won't do me any good. I need to somehow make these files read only. And I mean really read only, not the BS checkbox in windows that lets you do whatever you like to the file. I want to be able to play them, but I don't want to be able to delete them or change their locations. Closest I've come is File Guard by superhero software, and all it does is make a log of the deletion so I don't spend an hour trying to figure out what happened to it like I did today.

Thanks a lot. Sorry if this is the wrong section of this.

When I insert a cd into the disk drive I can hear it spinning and grinding but it never plays the disk & If I insert a blank disk to copy music, I get an error reading 'insert blank disk'.
Any ideas???

A:Unable to read disk?

Likely a bad drive. You do not state whether or not it's a CDROM or DVDROM or CD or DVD burner.

Autoplay may also be disabled, which isn't a bad thing but maybe you weren't expecting this. Simply open an explorer window to browse the CDROM. Does it read the disk or do you get an error? If so copy and paste the entire error back here.

The error you mention above isn't really clear, can you again post the exact error.

Also check the event viewer for any error messages that are logged onto the machine. Perhaps you have some problems and errors here that should be reviewed.

How could I fix this problem?

Can anyone help me on this please. I have a disk with a .igf file. (inset systems metafile) I think it's for a cad application. Would anyone know of a reader for this so I can open it? Thanks in advance for your ideas.

A:Unable to read file

You can click on it, select 'open with', then use Notepad. Likely that will not tell you what it 'really' is for you'll see a bunch of code. Occasionally you'll get readable text.

Hi and thank you for taking the time to help me out. The problem I'm having is with my cd/dvd-rom. Any discs I insert into my computer, even blank ones, aren't detected by my computer. I can't back up any files or play any cd's or dvd's. This happened out of nowhere, probably a while ago, but I never had the chance to get around to fixing it. After a while of not burning any cd's, I went to burn a cd one day and it wouldn't work. I tried uninstalling the drivers and restarting the computer to re-install them, but to no avail. I installed microsoft "Fix It" for it, and that didn't do squat. I don't know what I need to do to get it working again. Any help is appreciated. Thanks again.

A:CD/DVD-rom Unable to read *any* disc

Insert a bootable cd or dvd. Make sure the optical drive is the first device in the bios boot order. Reboot. Does the system see the bootable disc at boot? If not, you need to replace the drive. If it does, post back and we'll provide some suggestions for you.

Can anybody help me out as i am unable to get the problem & also the list of repairs is empty.
My first sheet is ok (sometimes) but i am getting my second sheet blank(always).

A:Unable to read files

Since I don't know what library you are using, my first guess is that you are using an incompatible version of Office. For instance, you have Office 98 and the library is writing for Office 2003 files.

If the error is in your code, double check that you are catch()ing all errors and checking return values for errors.

I have a Sony combo drive that can read DVDs and write CDs. Previously it was working perfect but now it just doesn't read DVDs. It is working perfectly as cd burner and can read disks other than DVDs. I think the problem started after i reinstalled windowsXP with SP-2 but i m not sure. Please help me out.

A:Unable to read DVDs

Doesn't it just read DATA DVD's or Video DVD's?
Try using it from a linux live cd, and mounting a few dvd's from there.
That might help isolating the problem.

Hello -

When ever I try to open an office document, be it word, excel or access, I get a message that says "Uable to read file." Everytyhing worked just fine last week, and I haven't installed anything recently. I tried deleting the to see if that was the case, and the problem still exists. I'm running a virus scan right now, and I guess I will try to reinstall Office next. Anything else I should try before doing that?

I'm running Office 2000 on XP pro, and again, all of these files worked fine last time I tried to open them.

The CD had shown 50% used with 50% available. When I accessed the CD today none of the files appeared. In properties it showed completely full. This CD is used in a program where I can use the CD in the same manner as another drive or a floppy disk. I want to know how I can acces the files that were on that CD

Hello Everyone,

I have two Windows 98 machines and one XP machine that are all experiencing the same issue. None of them will read cd's of any type.

Regarding the Win98 machines, I am wondering if the startup disk will resolve the issue? Is there a way that I can reinstal the cd drivers without reformatting my hard drives?

Regarding the XP machine, the McAfee Security Center recognized a program as a trojan and quarantined the program. In my haste, I deleted the program. Since that day the cd will not read any cd. McAfee has not been any help with this issue. Is there a way to reinstall the cd drivers for the XP machine?

As always, thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer in this matter.
