Windows 10 insider on my 7 year old HP a6433w Vista machine!

Q: Windows 10 insider on my 7 year old HP a6433w Vista machine!

I have the same machine, and I am running windows 10 Home the only problem is none of my drivers well update. How do I fix this problem?

A: Windows 10 insider on my 7 year old HP a6433w Vista machine!

Hi, Typically W10 will update when it's good and ready provided there are driver updates available. Double check the update settings under the Settings---->Update and Security--->Advanced Options. If the above is OK then review this information. I am running W10 on a seven year old VISTA laptop and W10 really didn't have any driver updates other than what is built into W10. In fact, I have to use a VISTA update to get one of my devices working. You may have to do the same.

Evening guys,

I returned from my new year celebrations to the usual look on my parents face's when I've been away - computer problems. Typical.

At some time on New Years Eve the laptop would no longer access the internet.
My ISP is o2 in the U.K
Expected Upstream is around 3000Kbps/800Kbps

1) We have three machines in the house. A desktop and laptop running Windows XP have no problems connecting. The remaining laptop running Windows Vista fails to connect.

I contacted my ISP, and told me it wasn't an ISP issue as when I ran the following tests from within the command prompt...

: netsh int ip reset
: netsh winsock reset catalog
: etc IP information was returned.

2) I have disabled/&reinstalled Anti-virus(AVG free) and Firewall(Zone alarm Free) to No effect. But Zone alarm is struggling to initiialize - True Vector service I think.

3) I have disabled/&Uninstalled the network adapters to no effect.

4) I am now going to copy in a log of the standard ping tests.

If I register myself in the Insider Program, can I try to install Windows 10 on a machine that has Windows XP already running? Can I leave the program at any time? I know that If I leave the program my Windows 10 license become inactive. In that case can I reinstall Windows XP again, or I can't because there is already the registration of the componentes in Microsoft servers when I was running 10 on the machine?
Thanks in advance

A:Testing Insider Preview on XP machine

The first question is whether the WinXP can meet the requirements for Win10. The next question would be if Win10 will have drivers for the devices on the WinXP computer, most times won't. I've not heard of WinXP working with the digital entitlement of Win10. Win10 was not offered as a free Upgrade to WinXP [only Win7 w/SP1 and Win8.1] so would assume that wouldn't be a path for Upgrading. And I haven't seen a Retail version of Win10 that can Upgrade over WinXP or WinVista. That said, I have Upgraded a couple of WinXP computers to Win10 but only after Upgrading to Win7 w/SP1 so as to get the freebie. There were drivers available for those Win7 computers which will be a key item for the ability to Upgrade, Win10 may or may not work with Win7 drivers.

I've checked here and on a couple of other places; many people seem to have similar problems but not similar enough that I've been able to solve it.

I have a HOME workgroup on my Vista machine that is connected to the printer I want to share. I have made HOME the workgroup on my W7 laptop. The Vista machine is able to access folders on the W7 and the W7 "sees" the Vista machine... the network map on W7 shows a "dotted" line from W7 - Vista but when I try to connect from W7 to Vista it will not accept a logon. I have tried using my normal Vista machine User Name and password and even tried creating a new one just for this connection but Windows Security always says "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password".

One of the other sites suggested that Client for Microsoft Networks needed to be installed on the W7 laptop but when I checked the properties for the W7 NIC there was no Install option... does W7 need Client for Microsoft Networks?

All settings on the Vista Sharing and Discovery are on.

A:Windows 7 machine cannot connect to Vista machine

I finally figured out that it was Vista machine firewall (AT&T Internet Security Suite by MacAfee) that was blocking the W7 machine from accessing the Vista machine.

After I checked the box in Port and System Services to allow RDP access, I was able to access both the Vista computer and its attached printer from the W7 machine.

A:Replacing graphic cards on a 7 year old machine?

Hi Colette,

Replacing a graphics card isn't as hard as Dell makes it sound. It's actually pretty easy, and you can do it safely and easily in the comfort of your own kitchen.

The harder thing to worry about is what kind of graphics card to get. Pretty much all new cards will support more than one monitor. If I assume that you want to stay with Nvidia, I'll have to let some of my forum friends advise you on what model to choose from. One important thing is to make sure that your power supply can support the new card, and that the new card's dimensions will fit within your computer's case.

Most new GPUs are of the two slot variety, meaning that they take up two of the slots at the rear of the computer. They don't use two slots on the motherboard, just the two on the rear panel. As long as you have room to put in a two slot card, you're fine. The other thing to worry about is the length of the card. You will have to measure the inside of your case from the back panel to the front of the case or drive towers to find the depth of your case. The card can be no longer than that dimension.

The final thing to worry about is the power supply. Depending on how many drives, fans and whatnot you have in your PC, your power supply must be up to the task. Most new GPUs have a power connection on them that comes direct from the power supply. Your power supply should have that connection. For a newer card, your PSU should also supply around 500W to give you enough margin to r... Read more

A week ago, I made the mistake of visiting a website for video game cheats - I think I picked up some malware or (gulp) a rootkit during my time there. Especially distressing, because I tend to make surfing in paranoid mode an art form. Shortly afterwards, my PC would keep running for minutes on end. When I tried to shut it off, I got a small windows pop up that popped away so quickly I couldn't read it. Shortly afterward, I noticed that the process 604BC32A-9680-40D1-9AC6-E06B23A1BA4C was running, and sucking down up to 2-3 gigabytes a run. I've terminated it, and since got back over ten GB of storage, and no further drains. I then ran a defrag, which temporarily sped up the computer. I noticed afterward that my Instant Messenger software was missing my buddy icon until I logged on, and some of my permissions were gone (I chalked that up to the defrag). Next time I logged on, everything was as it should have been. The computer became severely slow after running SuperAntiSpyware, Malware Bytes and two Norton scans in a row, but this is typical of the unit. Otherwise, no problems, except when I type there is occasionally a slight dragCurrently, my main problems are all video and audio related:On youtube and streaming video sites, the video quality has suddenly become very poor. HP Pavilion a6433w, asus mobo, 500 gig HD, E2180 dual core cpu

My desktop got shocked, psu green light was blinking, so I called HP techs, they told me my mobo was shot. So, I order a new one, along with a new psu, hard drive, and cpu.
I put in the recovery disk and all the lights come on, fans twirl, dvd tray opens & closes, but it will not boot up. they
I don't know what else to do. Every time I call HP, it cost me 49 dollars, and I feel that they don't tell me everythin g I need to know at once, just want me to keep spending 49 $.
I replaced everything as HP informed me, since they didn't have any of the original parts on hand, I had to buy the original parts else where.

I have a little knowledge of computers, no expert here, I just know that it won't boot up with or without the disks?

Thank you for any help you send my way.

Vista Incompatibility...instal Vista Transform Pack for XP and wait 1 year for
Vista itself to get sorted properley with driver issues...

I installed Vista the other day and...
My Sempron Mobile PowerNow driver wouldnt work (leaving the fan 24/7)
Nero wouldnt work
My Anti-virus wouldnt work
WinAVI wouldnt work
and this is on an OFFICIAL RE-LEASE..!!!!

The very next day I it and Re-Installed XP with Vista Transformation pack 6.0 and it
honestly was better than vista itself (in terms of looks etc, sidebar, tooltip windows, these
weren't on my Windows Vista)...the good thing about it (obviously) is that it was just XP re-skinned so everything worked on it.............

Just like ALL Microsoft Windows Before, (even though they have been vigoursly tested)
they ALL started out with issues......
look at XP...the Blaster Worm etc.etc.. then updates & service packs..... (say no more)

Wait another 6-12 months for millions of people to complain about thier issues and Microsoft
to fix em with then there wil probs be a Service Pack....
THEN get/install it..........

A:Vista Incompatibility...instal Vista Transform Pack for XP and wait 1 year.....

I never understand why people need to rush and install the latest O/S assoon as it is released.

The reason, as you can see, is above.

I'd rather wait a minimum of 12 months before all the initial bugs are found, patches are released etc etc...

Just seems too much of a headache, as well highlighted here if it all goes pear-shaped!

I have a new Gateway Vista 64 machine for my office . The old HP Pavillion Pentium 4 with XP 32(?)is networked in other room Here's my setup:

-HP Laserjet 1200 printer is plugged directly into the Vista 64 machine.
The XP Unit is on the network.
I can see and share files between the machines just fine but I get an error when choosing the networked printer in "add printer" when setting up XP unit.
(Print sharing is turned on on Vista Machine).
I choose the networked printer found on Gateway, it says that it will install drivers onto my machine to make things work, I click ok and it says that server for my printer has the wrong driver installed, would I like to find right driver? Clk yes. It looks for a VSFILE\XP but can't find it. It tells me to manually find the file but I can't find that file on HP site or any of my discs. I've uninstalled and reinstalled original drivers onto the XP machine (PCL6) and downloaded a Universal PCL5 printer file. None correct the problem. Vista automatically loaded the printer drivers when I turned on the power. It has a PCL5 file. The 1200 printer works fine when printing from Gateway machine. Here are the details: I bought a pre-built Gateway LX6810 PC with Vista installed on the HDD. After 2 years, I feel the MoBo, processor, and RAM are sub-par. I built a whole new rig with very nice components and want to move the HDD with OS in tact to the new machine. I realize that I will most likely have to clean out the drivers for the old MoBo...but how do I do this? What else should I be concerned with? I know this could get it even worth it to preserve my programs and file structure?

A:Need help - moving my HDD with Windows Vista to use as OS in a new machine

Your best bet is to put the drive in the new machine and then do a repair install of the os and during the repair install you feed it the new mobo drivers.

Normally you just do a new install and install your programs again. Much cleaner.

A:Log onto local machine in Windows Vista

Have you tried right clicking the install.exe file and "run as Adminstrator" An irritating security feature of Vista. Although you are a user/Administrator, (I'm assuming that is the status you have?), you are not a power Adminstrator.
You do not say which Vista version you are using, but you can, in the advanced versions, also create a Power user account, as you may have been more used to in XP.
Go to Start/All Programs and right click the command prompt.
Type Control UserPasswords2.
Click Advanced.

I have tried running Malwarebytes, Spybot, SpywareBlaster, and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool without luck.  I has subsequently installed Kaspersky, but this was after the infection.  I see the Kaspersky icon on the Firefox toolbar showing it's working in the background and various things are being blocked and under "Ad agencies" that is blocked but random windows are still opening, so I don't know if there are other programs infecting my mom's computer as well.

My Vista laptop (Medion MD97310 bought from Aldi in 2008) died recently with a graphics card error. I purchased a new laptop (Medion MD98770) with Windows 7 pre-installed and installed the hard disk from the old PC in the new PC. I can read all of the data etc. no problem but cannot do what I want to.

1. I can boot Vista from the old drive by changing the BIOS boot order, but naturally none of the drivers work. It asked me for the location of the new drivers. I pointed it at the Drivers folder in the Recover (D: ) partition of the new drive. For each driver it searched for a while, found the driver, but then could not install it and gave some obscure error message. Am I doing anything wrong and should I expect to be able to install Win7 drivers in Vista? If not how do I get Vista drivers for the new laptop?

I tried to run Windows Easy Transfer but it has no option for reading directly from a local hard drive. How do I do it? Can I just copy my entire user directory across or has Microsoft changed all of the file names and formats once again in its constant effort to make life as hard as possible for users?

What I would do is...

Keep the HDD with Win7 pre-installed in the new laptop.

Make some recovery CD's to avoid complications in the future.

Get an external enclosure for the old HDD with Vista on.

Copy all necessary data across from the old to the new.

Format the old and use it for backups.

Newbie here. I just built myself a new computer and i'm wondering if vista ultimate will run smoothly on it, or if i should use xp. I just bought vista ultimate through my college for 15 dollars which is a steal. Even though it's the "upgrade" dvd i've been told i can install a full version onto a formatted hard drive with a trick i'm sure you're all aware of. (if this doesn't work, correct me)

i also have xp if needed and currently have it on the IBM thinkpad T40 pentium M 1.5 ghz that im using right now and it runs pretty fast.

here are the specs of my build (budget build to replace my 2.2 ghz athlon xp tower)

Motherboard: ASRock ALiveNF7G-FullHD (7050 4RAM 256M-VID SND LAN RAID)

CPU: Athlon X2 5000 AM2 Dual-Core (2.6GHz 1280k 2000FSB 65w)

RAM Memory: 4GB 800MHz (2X-2GB) DDR2 PC6400 RAM

Hard Drive: 250GB 7200RPM SATA2 HDD

Optical Drive: BLACK 22X Dual Layer DVD-RW Burner

PC Tower Case: BLACK Steel Gaming & Side-Fan Mid Tower

Power Supply: Okia 550W BASIC LOAD

I plan to use this computer at home. I do NOT play any games and will be relying on the on-board video. I like to watch movies, use dreamweaver from time to time, and maybe some very light video editing. I will also be upgrading the sound card and be hooking the computer up to my 2.1 non-computer sound system which consists of a yamaha natural sound receiver, two mission 727 30 inch floor speakers, and a JBl SUB10 10 inc self powered subwoofer.

thanks for any replies

A:install windows xp or vista ultimate on new machine?

If you want to use the entire 4GB RAM, Vista x64 needs to be installed. Just make sure all of your hardware is compatible with x64. Xp 64 doesn't have enough support to even be considered as an option at this point. Vista should run smooth on that system.

Hello, I am having a very strange problem with my Windows Vista PC that practically makes it useless. Something is apparently hogging a lot of the physical memory. When I boot up the computer, right away and without having done anything (and no Sidebar), the Task Manager says 80% or so of the physical memory is already used. The Task Manager also says sidebar.exe is running (even though I turned it off), and so is dwm.exe (the Desktop Window Manager), and explorer.exe. I'm not surprised that those are running, but I'm surprised that they are apparently taking a lot of memory - each one in the Task Manager shows 10-20K at least. IE will also use a lot of memory if I start it.

Without even starting any applications, I'll get warnings from Windows saying that I'm low on memory, and it will tell me to close applications such as Desktop Window Manager, Windows Sidebar, and Windows Explorer. Obviously, that's pretty basic stuff that I shouldn't have to close in order for my computer to function normally. If I do start applications it gets even worse, and sometimes the computer will not even let me do that. If I try to start an application, like MS Word or Adobe Acrobat, sometimes it will just be killed. The window will try to come up...and then it's gone. Sometimes if a window does succeed in coming up, it doesn't fill in; just the outer part comes up.

Also, Windows will sometimes force me from the Aero feature back to Basic.

Sometimes these things are accompanied by war... Read more

I've searched for a solution and all I find are lots of other people with the same problem. I've tried different suggestions made by others such as changing the compatible issue within the properties, that did not work, nothing has worked. Of course Microsoft has no clue how to fix any of the products they make so it's useless asking them for help with anything.

Does anyone know how to get the game working? Thanks for any help.

Recently I installed some old software for my youngest son. They were some educational games, called Reader Rabbit, which had been a favourite for my two older sons. When I installed them I anticipated there would be some compatibility issues, due to the different operating system on which these programs were designed to run during a different time period. This software seemed to work well for a couple of days but the monitor (out TV) mysteriously turned off after closing the program and switching users. I tried connecting the PC to an old monitor and after an hour or so of fiddling around I managed to get an image to appear on the screen. I tried booting the computer in safe mode and ran a virus scan (I use avast by the way) to see if an undetected virus was perhaps causing the problem. After a very thorough 2 hour scan the computer stated that it could not find any viruses. I restarted the computer, this time booting the computer normally, without safe mode. After showing the green loading bar Starting Windows... the monitor mysteriously cut out and the sound cut off. I heard the Windows start up sound but I could not see anything on the monitor. I left the computer for a while to see if anything would happen, but nothing did. I tried restarting the computer in safe mode with networking to copy some important files in the event that I would need to restore the computer to a back-up point. I restarted and booted the machine again and noticed in the start-up screen that for a... Read more

I purchased this computer just before Vista was available but also bought it with a Vista upgrade disk whic was sent to me when it was available.  After seeing the problems with Vista I did not install it for several years.  When support for XP was stopped I installed it and it worked fine.  My son had the machine and was having some problems with it.  I went out and cleaned it for him.  There was quite a few Windows updates that he had not run, so I proceeded to install them.  After installation it started giving a me a compatability message for one of the drivers and disabeled it.  I need some help addressing this problem.

See this kb from Roxio. If you have any of the software mentioned, you need to apply a patch depending on which version of Vista you have 32bit or 64bit. If you used an upgrade disk then you most likely have Vista 32bit but you can check it. Right click Computer > Properties.

Hi -

You more than likely have a recovery partition on your hard drive. Try F10 during boot-up. If not try F11.

You should also contact Toshiba support and order a set of recovery DVDs. The cost from other manufacturer's like HP is about USD $25.

Similar to Windows XP Home Edition, Home Basic is intended for budget users not requiring advanced media support for home use. The Windows Aero theme with translucent effects is not included with this edition. Home Basic supports one physical CPU.[6] 64-bit Home Basic supports up to 8 GB of physical memory, and will be supported until 2012.

1) does anyone know if Aloha Bob's PC Relocator Ultra can work with Vista?

2) Is anyone aware of anyproducts, preferably shareware or freeware that can migrate both data/settings and programs from Win98 to Vista Home Premium?

A:Moving from a Win98 machine to a Vista Machine

I don't imagine there are any software apps with that feature - any of them new enough to work with Vista would likely not bother with Win98. Data won't be hard to migrate, but I don't imagine Win98 programs would work the same on Vista... You will probably have to reinstall the programs - if they are compatible. (My CD burning software, for example, was compatible with XP but caused the PC to not boot when I tried to install it on Vista) Settings are probably going to be a lot different on Vista vs. Win98...

So, a friend got a Toshiba laptop which has Windows Vista installed. His old laptop (which was running Windows XP) has a problem with the screen so he can't use it. I took the hard drive out of his old computer and put it in an external USB hard drive enclosure and transferred his files to the new machine.

I copied all of his music from his old hard drive to the new system but I didn't think to copy his playlists over, for some reason.

Anyway, once we locate his playlists what is the proper way to import them into Windows Media Player on Vista? Do we just put them in the Music folder or must we go through a formal import process using WMP?

Hello all,

This is the first time I've ever had to post on a tech forum to assist me in an issue, but I'm at an absolute loss.

A friend of mine was having trouble with his Dell Inspiron 1525, informing me that every time he booted the machine normally, it would freeze. He's not exactly computer savvy, so the machine wound up in my care to be diagnosed and fixed. I'm only a computer programmer, but I'm not exactly a slouch.

Safe mode and safe mode with networking work perfectly. Thinking the issue was just a plethora of viruses, I downloaded SuperAntiSpyware and Windows Defender and began cleaning out around a dozen or so pieces of malware and spyware from my friend's computer. I figured I had done my job and rebooted the computer normally. No go--- the issue still remain unresolved.

I'll describe the problem in more detail. I can get to the Windows Vista login screen just fine, and I'm even able to log in and get to the desktop... for about a minute. Then the machine locks to the point where I can only use the mouse and nothing else. I was able to get both Task Manager and Process Explorer working, and there is nothing taking up 100% of the processing power before the machine locks up. There was a svchost that took up 20-30% of the processing power but PE showed nothing abnormal with it, and I've even seen the computer freeze when that process was down to 0%. The physical memory seems a bit high at 850+ but nothing that should... Read more

A:Clean install of windows 7 professional 64 bit from Vista machine

Hello Tn4Bama, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yes, that DVD will allow you to do a clean install with it.Clean Install Windows 7
Of course, to be able to install a 64-bit Windows 7, your computer will also need to meet at least the minimum requirements below:1 GHz 64-bit processor
2 GB RAM for 64-bit Windows 7 (recommend at least 4 GB)
20 GB available hard disk space (recommend at least 60 GB)
It would also be a good idea to make sure that you have 64-bit Windows 7 drivers available for all of your devices, and to have them downloaded and ready to install after Windows is finished installing.

Hope this helps,

I was helping a friend who has a Dell Dimension E520 w/ Vista Premium that is a year old this week. He was complaining that IE 7 was freezing up occasionally, his AOL 9.0 vr desktop software would freeze after he downloaded pictures and then tried to view them within the AOL interface. In the last few days it has frozen a few times on the Dell screen that displays his bios information as it starts up.
I ran CCleaner, spybot (found 1 item), trimmed a few items in the Startup and Services tab in Msconfig and even though I'm not familiar with his computer I wasn't happy with the performance after doing these things. Using Firefox was an improvement over IE 7 in performance.
It got me thinking, would it just be better not have done anything and suggested to backup the hard drive and re-install Vista after re-formating the hard drive?

What is your opinion on this? Is it better after a year's use to start from scratch or spend time trying to clean up things?

well...since I couldn't find anything about this in the searches, here goes.

I just bought an HP machine running Windows Vista. So I went ahead and put another disk drive in and installed Windows XP on it. Now there are two disk drives, each with an OS on it. I can boot either one fine and all software meant to run on each OS runs fine. Photoshop, Premiere Pro, whatever. That is normal behavior. The problem is that I cannot connect to the internet with the Windows XP side. The Windows Vista side works fine, no problems other than the normal issues facing the current built of Vista.

I have to guess that the issue is coming from the driver for the networking card. But my solutions to that have not worked so far.

I have tried:
1) Updating the service pack
2) Using a chipset for Nvidia nforce (the manufacturer of the networking card) being sure to use XP versions of the AMD64 drivers which I believe to be correct.
3) Using an AMD chipset.
4) pulling most, but not all, of my hair out.

The error is the typical cannot open page. The network says connected so the system knows there is a network but no packets have been sent so I am not connected.

And here I had plans to install another drive with Ubuntu on it too. I wonder if that would give me the same problem with the internet connection.

There is something I don't understand here. I'm hoping someone in this community can shed some light on the situation for me. Is there an issue with the hardware? It just se... Read more

It could be a compatibility issue for sure. Have you checked out the HP website for the network card drivers, windows xp version? If not, download the drivers, un-install the current network card drivers and reboot the computer. Once you boot to windows xp again try installing the updated drivers.

Worst case you can just go to your local computer store and purchase a separate network card.

make sure you have all the drivers you need standing by on disc.... so you don't need to download anything once you're installing. Check and doublecheck that you have everything.....

Also, as soon as you've installed windows, do a defrag, then set a manual restorepoint so you have a blank point to get back to. Even better is doing a ghost image to a cd or an empty HD drive....

Then, what I usually do is defrag after every big install (like office) and after 3 smaller installs (firefox, VLC, that sort of thing....). I'm sort of neurotic with this...

I also make a list beforehand as to which things I want to install on it exactly....... so I can determine a good order in which to install....

But recently, when I was learn R programming, I ran a script accidentally( Copy Paste) which was meant for a octacore processor  on a Core 2 Duo processor(2.2 Ghz, 800 MHz FSB). The function was basically stop all the computing functions of the machine and give the script the whole processor to run to analyse the data. I found a post on this exact topic from back in 2010. I am trying to incorporate the code into my database and am not able to get the code to work if I make any changes. Here is the link to the previous thread:

I have also uploaded the database that was provided in the last post. If I try to change the field and object names I appear to be unsuccessful in having the code still work even when I change the items in the code as well. I woud like some help. I would like for there to be a field called "RequestDate" that has the date stamp that is keyed in by the user. Then after that is keyed in on the form the "AssignmentID" field is updated to the new assignment number. The "RequestDate"="Admit_Date" and "AssignmentID"="ActualFWCNumber". I am trying to do this in Access 2010. If I make changes either the number field doesn't autopopulate or the same number keeps repeating. Any and all assistance on this would be great.

I've read every post I could find on this so I'm sorry to ask another dumb question but here goes.

I created an access database (volunteer work) which has an autoincrement field to issue numbers to animals taken in at our shelter. My 'boss' (also a volunteer) wants this simple autoincrement changed to a value which begins with the two digit year and then has 4 digits, starting with 0001 which will increment sequentially and restart at 0001 with the new calendar year. Therefore, records will start with 10-0001, 10-0002, etc for this year and 11-0001, 11-0002 for next year.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have had no problems for a year and three months roughly and all of the sudden it started locking up with almost any program I would try and run (Word 07, IE, Excel 07, games, etc.). At first I thought it was a virus so I ran McAfee several times after locking down my firewall and came up with nothing. I heard that Norton could cause a problem after the trial periods came do so I completely wiped the drive clean of all Symantec and Norton traces. I noticed a significant improval for about a week and then it went back to freezing with every program and started freezing when coming out of sleep mode. I tried doing the restore point to a month before, no luck, then I tried to reformat the computer (has separate partition on HD for Windows Recover) and it kept failing at 45% then on the fourth attempt it finished after about 12 hours. I ran the system diagnostics thinking it could be the HD or the RAM but the check came back ok(as well as the processor). I just recovered the computer again and I have nothing but a half installed WOW client, having all the problems from the first time before I tried to recover. Any suggestions out there?
~ BTW I have two other PCs, one with Vista Home Basic, and Laptop with XP if I need to test on either one of those.

A:Sudden Vista Premium problem after 1+year

If you've reinstalled from the recovery disks, then all should be well. This leaves a problem with the recovery disks, or a hardware issue.
I'd suggest getting another set of recovery disks from Compaq and trying them. If you still have problems, then it's most likely a hardware issue.

My friend has had this machine since the middle of last year. Updates have been failing to install or even download since SP1 failed to install. I have included a Screenshot of the last time any updates were applied. As you can see there is an SP1 failure and the security update before that was the last successful actual Windows update to be applied. There is also another SP1 fail a few days before that too. The only updates after the SP1 failure are Defender updates and Office updates and these are all successful.

I have tried the instructions in but none of those work (the first step is non-existant and when I try and install the Windows Update agent it just responds with the usual 0x8000FFFF (Catastrophic error i believe code). After doing the manual reset of the Windows Update and going to the inbuilt Windows Update it now comes up with the 0x8000FFFF error and says it can't search for updates which it was doing before. If this is the result of the failed SP1 update, is there anyway to remove the partially failed installed components of it? Any help would be great.

I have my first windows 7 computer on my home network, and it appears to me I have outgoing networking, but not incoming. On the Windows 7 computer, I can get to the router and the Internet, and can access shared folders on Vista machines on the home network. The computer name "advertising protocol" works as the name of the Windows 7 computer in the "Network" user interface on the Vista machines (the user interface accessed from Network and Sharing Center by 'view computers and devices"), but attempting to access it gets a "cannot access" error, and attmepting to diagnose gets a "cannot find" error. For whatever it is worth, highlighting the icon in the "network" user interface does not show anything for "location".

I am going through this to get shared folders on the Windows 7 computer visible on other computers on the network. Obviously this is not working. Just to recap the configuration:
1) all computers on the network are members of same Workgroup
2) My documents on the Windows 7 computer are shared read-write with everyone
3) advance sharing options show:
Network discovery ON
File and print sharing ON
Public folder sharing ON
128 bit encryption
Password protected sharing OFF
IPv6 disabled
Homegroup stuff either OFF or ON and managed by Windows (but this is irrelevant)
4) firewall off

A observation:
I noticed something funky with MacIDs. the router - when the Windows 7 computer authenticates - sh... Read more

A:Cannot ping W7 machine from any vista machine

Why is IPv6 disabled? You do realize that IPv6 is only used on the LAN and is needed for Homegroups to work correctly. Maybe you were just thrown off by the first picture below which is only telling you that IPv6 is not connected to the WAN because it's not supposed to be.

The second picture shows it as enabled for the LAN.
It doesn't matter much either way unless you are Homegroup, but Homegroup only works with Windows 7 computers. For Vista and Win 7 you need to use either workgroup or public file sharing. You also need to enable file sharing on the Vista machine.

You should not need to turn the firewall off.

Are you sure that you are sharing the correct group. There is a seperate public file sharing settings page but the workgroup and homegroup use the same settings page.

Maybe you were thrown off because there are two settings pages. The third picture is the Homegroup and Workgroup settings page and the fourth one is for the Public file sharing.

A:Not on Insider Build but error message: Your Insider Build Needs Attn

Hello Pkshadow Welcome to the Ten Forums!

The prompting you are seeing is most likely to get you to notice and install updates that have been accumulating. Otherwise that is a strange one. You might have to sign into an MS account if you already had one setup in order to see that account's information updated on the change from Insider to Anniversary. That would then see everything synced properly.

I am new to this site and desperately need advice. I have a 3 year old Dell running Vista Home Edition. For the past two days I had noticed issues with Outlook. It would hang and go unresponsive. The solution was to use Task Manager and shut it down. This happened again last night but when I went to shut it down it wouldn't. So after a few minutes I powered down using the on/off button; waited a few seconds and powered up again using the on/off button.

The system appeared to be loading. I had the horizontal small sliver box at the bottom and watched for about 10 minutes as the green trail moved across the slot. After that I powered down again.

On the next start attempt I got the "System Repair" screen. I followed the instructions and after quite some time I got the screen that said it couldn't repair the problem. When I checked the log all tests ran successfully. There was a message that read"Root cause found: Unspecified changes to system configuration might have caused the problem."

But when I try to reboot again the same screen appears.

Any suggestions are welcomed.

I have an installation folder on my main machine(Windows 7) with all my software. I have repeatedly run into issues connecting odd devices to my shared folder. This time I have installed Windows 10 Technical Preview (on a different machine) and don't understand why it tells me I can't access my own machine. After all these years, you would think user friendly would be a reality. It seems to be a coin toss as to which machines will connect. I hate never knowing I can access my own machine without issue. Here I am trying to install applications but yet I can't get to my storage location.

What is the secret to sharing your machine, so that anyone on the same network can access shared folders?

Edit: I always turn on "Network Discovery" and "File and Print Sharing".

A:Network connection issues (year after year)

I'm more brutal via the firewall:

set trust localhost and your lan ip's, eg

then add two rules for only the PRIVATE PROFILE

inbound allow tcp/udp from to any for ports 137-139,445
outbound allow tcp/udp from any to for ports 137-139,445
I use a much more complicate scheme in reality to enforce known vs unknown devices and to segregate WiFI from wired access, but that's just me.

In services, ensure these are running

Bonjour Service ( mDNSResponder)
Network Connections
Network List Service

I have a dell studio 15 laptop Windows Vista Home Premium installed on it. I got this laptop in November 2008, since then it was working fine just when I returned from Germany o india its not working. initially i thought disk got damaged due to x-ray scanning on airports but I read several threads on internet which says it does not erases/damages hard disks same I have also experienced during my several visits in which same laptop has gone through with this scanning process.

I tried to recover my OS by using OS DVD provided with the laptop. I booted my laptop by setting up the bootable device as DVD in BIOS but it does not help me to recover. I tried to install Windows XP also in C derive so that I can see the data(i.e. my all useful and important) present in D derive but its is not allowing me to install windows XP too on it.

While searching information, I came to know that it seems like its a issue of Windows Vista Home Premium and several people have faced the same . In one solution, it is mentioned that OS DVD provided with laptop may not have files to boot and recover so i downloaded a bootable files and tried with that too but that also does not work for me but it has worked for others as per reviews mentioned.

So as many has already discussed here my Windows won't activate after I did a clean install of it.
The steps I took was that after it did the self update from my last insider build I decided to do a clean install with the mediacreationtoolx64 because after doing a normal "reset of pc" I ended up in a loop of BSOD that I couldn't escape.
I was hoping very much that my windows account would automatically link my profile so my windows would stay legit, though now it seems I'm without an activation code and can't return to the insider build. Am I screwed without a key now?
Also I get the [Error code: 0xC004C003] which I understand means "busy servers" but I'm afraid I might not have a key for it to activate at all once it comes alive again.
Am I right/wrong in things? A helping hand would be great, thanks!
**Also when I try force activate it through cmd prompt it gives a "The activation server has determined the specified product key is blocked".. hmm

A:Windows 10 Activation as Insider

I did the microsoft chat. the guy said MS will fix this within 24-48 hours
I did the microsoft call. the guy said that you cannot clean install. the reason my product key (which I had to use a tool to grab from Win10 after it was an upgrde of Win7) wont work in a clean install of Win10 is because it is specifically an upgrade key. you must ALWAYS upgrade. I dont think the guy knows what he is talking about. or if he does, that sucks bad!

The answer is, of course and quite clearly a big NO. You cannot get Windows 10 free to your new computer. It is and has not been free since Windows 10 was released on 29th of July 2015.

Microsoft has all the time been and still is quite clear with this:

Users who installed Windows 10 Technical Preview on their computers before the launch last July and will remain in Windows Insider program will have a legal, valid and activated Windows 10 as long as their device remains functional, and are able to upgrade it to any future builds of Windows 10 Insider Preview

After the July 29th 2015 users have had and will have two ways to get Windows 10:
If a user has a valid, licensed and activated Windows 7 or 8 on a PC, that PC can be upgraded to Windows 10 for free until 29th of July 2016If a user has any other operating operating system than Windows 7 or 8, or if a user gets a new PC without operating system, or if a user will upgrade Windows 7 or 8 after the Jul... Windows 10: Windows Insider Program participants can upgrade to the RTM build next year

Offering the latest build of Windows 10, Microsoft's upcoming operating system that is set to launch in 2015, via a special Windows Insider Program to eager beta testers is a new move on Microsoft's part, in the hopes of obtaining as much feedback as possible. With a simple click of a button, you can check for a newer build and download/install it for evaluation purposes. This allows you to be on top of the developmental process and give testers the chance to tinker with the latest improvements and features.

Microsoft has already outlined a roadmap for Windows 10's release, which is set to happen sometime between late summer or early fall of next year. But one question has come up regarding these preview builds. Will Microsoft allow testers the ability to upgrade a preview build to the RTM (final) version of Windows 10 once it becomes available? The answer is yes.

Kaspersky declines to support Windows Insider builds of Windows 10

While not exactly new information, we?ve received a tip from a user of Kaspersky. When inquiring about Kaspersky not working with Insider builds of Windows 10, the company responded that their policy of not supporting them isn?t new.

?Kaspersky has never supported beta builds or preview versions of any operating system and it?s very unlikely that this will change, as we cannot guarantee the stability of our product on such builds. As a result, the chances of our product supporting such builds in the future is to be honest extremely low.
We absolutely respect your decision to continue using the Insider preview build and uninstall Kaspersky instead but in such a case there is not unfortunately anything further that we can do.?

aspersky points out that because Insider builds aren?t stable that they won?t support them. A similar sentiment was said by Microsoft themselves in a forum post. On that forum they state that ?You likely won?t see a fully supported version of Kaspersky until Redstone reaches general availability, which is in the second half of this year. That?s if you don?t like it, its best you stick with a fully supported stable build such as the Windows 10 November Update.?

Hi Guys and Gals

I used to have windows 10 Insider Preview running on a separate partition on my laptop, until recently.
I had a choice at boot-up as to which operating system I wanted, either the Insider or my regular Windows 10 Pro, then, all of a sudden the choices were not there. I just couldn't get into the Insider system.
I thought that if I deleted the system I would be able to download a fresh installation, but, I just can't find an installation that will load. I keep getting the error message "winload.exe has expired" and there is nothing I can do to get my Insider programme to load and work.
Please, please, has anybody got any ideas as to what I can do next, I still want to be a member of the Insider programme, but can't download a loadable replacement.

Waiting with fingers crossed

Hi everyone, I?m excited to share the news that we?re rolling out our next build update to the ?Fast? ring of the Windows Insider Program ? Build 9879! Once again this build has a ton of changes, some noteworthy new features, and a few gotchas to be aware of. It also has a number of things that YOU have influenced directly with your problem reports and suggestions. Thanks!

Getting started:

If you are new to the Windows Insider Program you may want to check out my post here from last month since this post is using some terms and concepts I first shared there. (e.g. our ?ring progression? model.)
Just like last time, this new build will come to you automatically via Windows Update, installed during your maintenance window if your PC is plugged in and on or sleeping.
If you don?t want to wait for it to download and install on its own ? you can go to PC Settings, Update and recovery, Preview builds and click the Check Now button to go get it now.
If you?re currently in the Fast ring, the build is available now. If you?re in the Slow ring, you won?t receive the build right away ? we?ll publish to Slow after we see how everything goes with the Fast ring.
This is a full build, and it will be installed as an in-place upgrade, so you?ll go through those colorful ?installing your apps? screens again. This is because your account is being re-provisioned after the upgrade.

I have Version 1511 (OS build 14295.1000) installed and there does seem to be a problem at least on my PC. Whenever I shutdown I always get the message to click cancel to return to save my data whether I have any data to save or not. That is the first thing. The next is that it says to click Cancel to return to save the data but immediately I do it carries on shutting down or restarting.

Currently I have no way of communicating this (or any other problem I come across) to Microsoft. I understand that I ought to be able to use either Insider Hub or Windows Feedback but I have access to neither. I have just finished reinstalling the same version again as others have said this has worked for them - no joy for me though.

So my question is: how am I supposed to get bug reports back to Microsoft? Can anyone give me any idea why I may not have these apps on my PC? If I'm supposed to have them how can I install them? Finally, is there any other way of submitting bug reports to MS? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

I have been running Windows 10 Technical Previews on my Acer C720 for the past few weeks. Yesterday I updated to full Windows 10 (don't think it changed anything, was running 10240 before and 10240 afterwards) and I wanted to stop Insider Builds due to the laptop being stable to use and since I use it for college I want it to remain stable.
