Dell E6410 auto restart after BIOS update

Q: Dell E6410 auto restart after BIOS update

Hi
I have an old Dell E6410 Laptop, which i need to BIOS upgrade in orden to use my SSD disk.
I download, and I try to upgrade, which runs fine, but when it comes to the auto restart that should do the actual update, it will not auto restart...
I'll have to push the power button, and it starts with a not upgraded BIOS.
Does anyone know why auto restart is not working on the laptop?
I can't do a autorestart at all, i allways have to push the power button..

A: Dell E6410 auto restart after BIOS update

Hi,
Thank you for writing to us!
This could be an issue with the motherboard that could be faulty .
We would advised you to restore BIOS to Defaults and then run diagnostics on the system.
Kindly private message the service tag and email address.
Thanks

I was installing Windows 10 on one of my older laptops and like any other update it restarted itself but now it won't go past the dell logo that pops up when it turns on. I've waited as long as 30 minutes and nothing. I turned it off and on again but still nothing happens

When making changes in the BIOS setup program, subsequent access to the BIOS setup shows the settings have reverted to initial previous (default)  values/settings. Things that are NOT the problem:

BIOS is always under either laptop battery or AC adapter power. Battery and AC adapter are original OEM with this computer. Therefore, the problem cannot be the CMOS backup battery, because it only comes into play if the notebook battery and AC are disconnected at the same time. The notebook battery is good. It powers the unit for over 2 hours.

Things that might be the problem:

The hard drive was replaced and Debian linux was installed. The small diagnostic  partition no longer exists, because it wasn't transferred from the old drive to the new hard drive.

Finally, the settings might be persistent, but may be displayed incorrectly in the BIOS setup program.

So, why do the BIOS settings not persist?

I suspect the Dell proprietary diagnostic partition--or lack of it--is the culprit! But I want to know for sure. And I'd like a link to download the contents of the diagnostics partition for this model computer.

Thank you,

Awesome

Hello,
I have a Latitude E6410 working fine. Today, I've reinstalled everything (Windows, Drivers, etc)
Then I've updated the bios (A04) with this update : http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/driverdetails?driverid=R305353
The update has been made without any error, and at the end a message said something like 'installation was successfull' in green letters. Cool. Then the computer rebooted by itself. Then I've nothing more than a blank screen...Not cool.
Could you please help me ?
Thanks in advance

I have a couple of PC systems that do not have the BIOS option to restart after loss of AC power. It seems like there should be a way to briefly close a relay contact connected to the ON switch when power is reapplied. Anybody have a circuit or idea how to do this?

In case your wondering, these systems are used for voicemail and do have a UPS connected. We live in a rural area and sometimes the power goes out for extended periods.

Thanks

Hello,
It's been a while since I posted anything as I have just now taken care of a pirated W 7 problem. I have resolved and am legit now, but if I ever find the guy who, well never mind. Here is my issue. I now have W 7 Home premium. I have windows update set to auto update. As I was checking email and just cruizin the net etc. My pc just shut down and restarted. I discovered that it was the auto update. I want to continue to use auto update, but I don't want my pc to shut down and restart even though it warns me. Can anyone tell me how to change this?
Thanks, John

Hi..
I've got a fresh install of windows XP pro SP2, that is currently downloading a 1.3GB update for a game.. however windows has downloaded some updates and keeps bringing up this dialogue box that gives me about 4 mins before the machine will automatically restart - thus cancelling my download (which is about a quater of the way through).

Is there a way I can just stop this from coming up like stopping a service or something? I just don't want to be sitting in front of the computer clicking "restart later" every 10 mins or so..

A:Windows update: Auto restart

Just click restart later as many times as you need.

Installed Win 8 Pro with 'keep Win 7 settings' option; it frequently and automatically restarts when the PC is left running idle, both when I am logged on and off and so far always when I am not at the PC.

When I then log in/start it up again, it asks if I want to send 3 files to MS (Windows\Minidump\nnnnn.dmp, an .xml file in AppData\Local\Temp which is no longer there when I look, and Windos\MEMORY.DMP which no longer exists either even though I have not sent them to MS).

I found a winstore.log file which seems to relate to this event, perhaps (it talks about 'exiting' at the end):

A:Win 8 Pro Update - frequent auto Restart

No, that's just exiting the update process, not exiting windows.

We say this daily around here. Upgrades are problematic. When they work, they work. But frequently, they go very wrong. The reason is that Microsoft cannot predict every possible configuration, and some of them won't be able to be upgraded without problems.

I estimate that > 50% of all upgrades have some kind of issue, usually small and niggly, but of that 10-25% have major issues that require you to take further steps.

First, try a system refresh. If that doesn't work, then you may be stuck doing a full clean install. Just say no to upgrades in the future.

I want to switch between 2 laptops onto a DELL E178FPc Monitor (which is VGA input only).  The Laptops are a DELL E6410 -VGA out only, running Win7    and  a DELL Inspiron 5000 series machine -HDMI output, running Win10.
I have tried to achieve this using a KVM switch (the ATEN CS22U, non-powered). It claims to be Win7 compliant.
When I connect it to the E6410's VGA port and then in to the Monitor it says 'no signal detected'. Subsequent research would suggest that even if I were to somehow get a display through the KVM switch it will be lost as soon as you switch to the other laptop (!).
I have come to believe through research on the web that the E6410 Laptop will only work with a VGA monitor being directly connected to its port, or an alternative (powered) KVM Switch with so called Active-DDC (whatever that is!) may also work.
Needless to say I have exhausted my tech knowledge on this one.
Can anyone offer further advice or recommend a solution?
Ed.

So we have a PC in my shop right now that dell replaced the motherboard in sept 2013. Apparently at that point I see alot online about them not giving paper keys when they did the repairs. In this case the customer is fed up with the BS of Dell support as they want to charge him for a warranty to help. The PC lost all power, lights, etc and had the motherboard replaced but dell says all they did was replace the modem card. Machine has no modem as its a ultrabook. But anyways, heres the question. They keep telling him if he purchases a Dell Windows 8 recovery disk that the machine will activate again. Is this true or just them trying to milk him out of $60? I didnt know if they were similar to the windows 7 disks with "slic"? I dont remember the term right now. I thought they would pull the bios key the same as a OEM windows 8 disk would.

They have been using the computer all this time with it complaining that it wasnt genuine and just closing that out but the computer got murdered with a really bad virus now and the recovery cant verify the edition of windows or something to that nature.

Tried loading with the OEM generic key and using the key tool to pull the MSDM key off the board and once I did that it was when I realized the board was replaced and thats when the customer remembered this also.
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can suggest here. Dell actually offered to remote in and activate the version that I couldnt activate and they believe it or ... Read more

On Restart, at the login screen, when entering the password, I get a sad face BSOD with
Kernel Auto Boost Lock Acquisition with Raised IRQL.
The crash occurs on entering the first 1 or 2 characters of the password, before enter.

The problem persists, (repeats) after the crash restart until I do a shut down, usually on the login screen, before I enter a password.

The problem does not show up with a Shut down, power on sequence, only when I do a restart.

I have a dual boot environment (configured with the MS bcdedit boot manager), for Win8.1 and Win10. Win8.1 remains stable, so this is unlikely a hardware problem.

The problem showed up immediately after the anniversary update (AU, version 1607) was installed. My Win10 was stable from July 2016 until 10/1/16 when AU installed.

I've looked at drivers. Very few have timestamps newer than July 2015, i.e. they should already have been in place for AU. Only one has a roll back option and it's timestamp is 8/11/13.

The problem is not completely repeatable.
<5% of the times after a restart, I can login successfully
<10% of the times after and crash and then shut down, it will still occur at the next login.
Doing 2 consecutive shut downs fixes the double crash > 95%.
I had to do 3 shutdowns once in the last 80 crashes to get stable again.
<5% of the time I get a second crash during the restart from the first crash
<.005% of active use I'll get a crash in the middle of a session. I think these occur... Read more

I purchased a used Latitude E6410 which is running Windows 10 Pro on a legacy boot, because I couldn't get the computer to install Windows 10 Pro using UEFI.  The BIOS is showing version X35, which doesn't appear to be the right BIOS for this computer (A16 being the most recent BIOS in Dell Support).  Should I try to flash the BIOS to A16?  Obviously, the last thing I want to do is turn a working computer into a dead brick.

Hello to all,

Newbie here...I work in tech support for the local University here... I've had a number of Dell E6410 which have gone to a BSOD on me. One seemed to have an issue with an inverter which may have been the problem. And I've seen a couple others come and go. I'm hoping that I can start posting these BSOD's so maybe we can narrow down the issue rather than just re-image and say 'I dunno what fixed it, but it's fixed'
I actually like know what's going wrong so I can give the client advice as to what to avoid as well as a more detailed report for those who ask.

Hi,

I’m using ASUS P5N-E S motherboard. I have used the EZ-Flash 2 utility to update my BIOS from a floppy disk. It went fine. The BIOS was updated and the computer restarted.

After it restarted however, I got a message saying that the computer couldn't start and I would need to restore the default settings. I went to setup and restored the default settings and now whenever I try to start my computer, I get the following error: "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER".

Please can someone tell me how I can stop this from happening and get my computer to start up normally?

Thanks,

Make sure that the hard drives are detected correctly and the boot order includes the hard drive. The BIOS reset the settings to the defaults so it may be set incorrectly now. Also if you have RAID setup then you need to re-enable that as well.

Have a Dell Latitude E6410 - If the laptop sits idle for a while (about 10 or so minutes) I get the BSOD. Not sure if it is related to the hibernation or not. Have a few new AC adapters I bought for it, but can't confirm that is the problem. Have read about hibernation causing an issue, but wanted to get the thoughts of the forum based on what the log collector shows. Thank you for all help !! JB

I am attaching a picture of the BSOD as well.

Hello people
I have a Dell Latitude E6410 running on Windows 7, I installed some windows updates and after that the cursor just froze, upon restarting the problem still persisted. Right now my touchpad is dead. I have uninstalled all the security updates of windows except for one because it is not uninstalling, I tried uninstalling the touchpad driver and re-installed different drivers but nothing seems to work here, I even tried the troubleshooter.
The Dell touchpad software detects the touchpad and even shows that it is ON.
In short I have tried all the methods posted on the forums online but I cannot find a solution. Please help me out here!
Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone,

I need help fixing a dell latitude e6410 Core i7 Laptop. I tried removing and reinstalling the cpu on the laptop and I put everything back together. When I turn on the laptop, it wont display anything on the screen. What would be the cause of this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I made sure I put in the thermal paste on cpu and installed Heatsink and fan.

The fan was clean and aswell as the heat vent.

I already tried other cpu's and it didn't boot up aswell.

Is there any special key combination do I need to press when I power on the system.

Can you think of anything else that can be useful to resolve the issue.

Hello everyone.
I have a Dell Latitude E6410 laptop, which I bought it as a used laptop. Last week, while I am using it to browse websites, it SUDDENLY shutdown, then I try to turn it on again by pressing the power button, but it doesn't turn on. I look at the power adapter, it's green light is FLASHING. When I disconnect the power adapter from the laptop, the light on the power adapter is STEADY green. As soon as I connect the power adapter back to the laptop, its green light is FLASHING again. I also tried to turn on the laptop by using the battery, but it doesn't turn on. There is NO sound or light on the laptop at all. What's wrong with my laptop, is the motherboard dead? Sorry for a long message. Thank you very much for any help.

Hello,

I've just done a clean install of Win 10 on a Dell Latitude E6410. I didn't have acccess to Dell's own driver setup discs, so it's just what I got from Microsoft. Windows appears to run OK, but there's no sign of my DVD drive. That is, there are no DVD/CD entries in Device Manager, and no drive appearing in File Explorer.

I know the drive is fine, because I've set up the laptop as dual boot with Linux Mint, and it works perfectly well there.

I've tried doing the usual registry fix (reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001), and rebooted, to no avail.

I've checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}, and there are no entries for Upper or Lower Filters to delete.

There are no entries for IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers in Device Manager.

There is one unknown device in the Other devices section, but from the driver details (ACPI\SMO8800\1) it appears to be the Dell Freefall sensor.

The Drive is a TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-U633F D500. Dell say they don't support Win 10 on this machine, and don't seem to want to provide a driver for it on the model specific page. I may have found one elsewhere, but as the drive doesn't appear in Device Manager, I don't know how to update it...

Can anyone suggest a solution?

Thanks,

Piers.

A:Dell E6410 - No DVD after Win 10 install - Fixes don't work!

First, the ONLY driver for optical drives of any type is the default built in Windows driver. It has been this way since Win XP.

Since Linux detects it, this says its probably not disabled in the BIOS, although I would still check as Linux can do strange things. If its disabled or not detected in the BIOS, Windows will not detect it. Dell Calls the BIOS the "Setup" and its accessed by F2 at power on.

If the BIOS is OK, reinstall the Intel motherboard chipset drivers - even if the version you have is the latest. One of the things the chipset drivers do is identify all the devices on or attached to the motherboard.

There are chipset drivers on the Dell downloads but they are old. You can get the latest at Intel: Tablet, 2in1, Laptop, Desktop, Smartphone, Server, Embedded

HI Anazer01
Thanks for writing to us.
When you say bluetooth is not enabled where are you checking the status.
What happens when you try to pair a device. In the taskbar on the bottom right corner of the screen, right click on the bluetooth icon if any and try to pair a device and let us know how it goes.
Also update the drivers from support.euro.dell.com- enter the tag#-submit--drivers and downloads--select operating system--network and install the necessary drivers.

I recently bought a Dell Latitude E6410 with Win 10. I have problem with its sound and mic. When I active the mic, I don't have sound on internal speaker, when I fix the sound, then the mic doesn't work. If I add an external mic it does work with sound together but not in all apps. For example, they don't work together on Skype.
When I used Dell driver checks, it showed me the BIOS needs to be updated, but when I want to update it gives me error.
Appreciate any help.
Thanks.

Hello. Dell does not support Windows 8, 8.1, or 10 on the Latitude E6410 model and cautions that you might lose some functionality if you do run Win10. You can see the notice on the E6410 support page.
The E6410 has IDT audio hardware on the motherboard. The IDT company went out of the consumer audio business before Windows 10 came out, so I doubt that there will ever be a Win10 IDT audio driver for that model.
You can try to use the IDT Win7 audio driver in Win10, by installing it while using Compatibility mode.
1. Download and save the audio driver to your desktop or any convenient location on the hard drive.  [There are two "formats" on the driver's page. Scroll down to the 2nd one, named "Hard Drive" format, and download that one, not the 1st one named "Windows Update Package".]2. Double click on the new folder to extract (unzip) the driver files.3. The extractor wizard will create a new folder for the driver files. It will be at "c:\dell\drivers\xxxxxx". Write down the exact location that the wizard creates. 4. If the driver begins to install automatically, halt (cancel) the installation.5. Browse to the driver files on the hard drive (the location you wrote down).6. Find the "setup.exe" file.7. Right click on setup.exe to open the context menu.8. Select the Properties.9. Select the Compatibility tab.10. Check the box "run this program in compatibility mode for"... W... Read more

Hi, I'm so glad that I have a place to ask for this kind of questions. Thanks for everyone in advance!

My laptop keeps failing me when I switch the internet connection from wifi to LAN ethernet. Once I plugin the ethernet plug, I got a BSOD. The details are something like the image I attached.

Since it's complaining my nwifi.sys, I tried to download the latest driver from Dell, but it's still crashing. Then I directly downloaded the latest driver (newer than the one Dell put on their page) from intel, things still happen.

I've also tried to run with the verifier open, it will crash even earlier (before the windows os booted) and the dump file is still blame the nwifi.sys, not a third party driver.

All the files I collected are attached too.

FYI: When i run perfmon /report, the window opens and it keeps saying collecting data. It never finishes and creats the report. Any help would be appreciated.

Three problems
1-sptd.sys used in alcohol120 and daemon tools is a huge problem

Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%.

They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs.

Use this SPTD uninstaller DuplexSecure - Downloads

when you're done you can use this Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) in its place.

Hello. My configuration is:
Dell Latitude E6410, Intel Core i5 2.4 GHz, 4GB RAM, Bios A09
Windows updates and Dell driver/BIOS updates: Current
BIOS settings: Default
Windows 7 Professional SP1, 32-bit

Using Windows 7 Professional, 32-bit, after the system has gone to sleep using the Function-F1 key sequence, it occasionally has trouble waking up. It will start to wake up, spin the hard drive, and the screen may come up, but then it locks up. Pressing the caps-lock key does not light up the caps lock, so it looks like the keyboard is locked up. Also, when that happens, the mouse is locked up and the pointer cannot move. Any ideas why this happens intermittently? Thanks in advance.

irql_not_less_or_equal
driver crorupted expool
Kernel security check failure

now i have been able to hot swap this this hard drive with other laptops and it boots my old windows no problem but on this laptop i cant install anything.
even if i try to fresh install windows 10 it also gives those errors above especially Kernel security check failure.
the only way i have been able to use this laptop is to install windows 10 32 bit in another similar dell laptop then put the hard drive in this laptop and boot with legacy mode.

Sometime I get to see the BSOD, but usually by the time I get to my system has automatically shut down. When I press the power button, it restarts with the message your system did not shut down properly, do you want to restart in safe mode?

I have attached all the SF Diagnostic files, would appreciate feedback.

I have noticed today that after a few minutes of idle time my laptop completely freezes, no ctrl+alt+delete and I have to manually power it down.

I have even seen this when i reboot my computer and don't enter my password at the login screen for a few minutes.

The hard drive LED keeps glowing.

The only change I did was run windows update. The Perfmon file and the BSOD Diagnostic tool report are both attached with this mail.

Would appreciate any help am at my wit's end. Unfortunately System Restore was disabled too so I can't even rollback.

Unfortunately your zip doesn't contain the necessary dump files but it does contain everything else, s please do the following below in quote.

Quote:
We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.
To ensure minidumps are enabled:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

I have a Dell E6410 and of late I have noticed that my system locks up with horizontal lines on my screen. No keys work and I have to hit the power button to shut down and restart.

It's a Core i5 with Intel Graphics running Windows 7 64bit.

It's under Dell cover and they already replaced the screen and motherboard but the problem continues.

I have ran Dell Diagnostics as well which ran without any problems.

I have a screenshot here. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Hello, I've researched extensively for a solution to why my brand new battery and AC Adapter won't fully charge.
When I first turned on the computer it charged to around 72 percent.
Then after the first recharge, it only went up to around 48 percent.
Repeated again, and only got around 39 percent and now it seems to stay there.
I've updated the BIOS already, tried uninstalling the ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery Driver and reinstalling it.
So my question is, is there any place I can download an updated driver?
The one on my computer states that its from 06/21/2006. Perhaps there's an updated driver somewhere?
My Operating System is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
Please help.

I have a Dell Latitude E6410 laptop and when I try to do quotation marks, I push shift and the quotation mark key, but nothing shows up on screen until I type the next letter. When I had my old computer (which had Windows XP as its OS) there was no such delay.

Also, if the next letter following the quotation mark is an I, my computer does this:
?
That comes from me pushing the shift and quotation mark key, and then pushing the I key. Why doesn't it just do "I"? (in order to make it do that I have to type the letter I first and then go back and put in the quotation marks around it).

Does anyone know how to fix this so my quotation marks just show up immediately when I push the shift and quotation mark key, or how to make my computer stop doing this: ?

Thank you!!

My new laptop ran Dell Updates overnight a couple of days ago and I had to power it up the next morning, only to discover it was a complete restart and the programs I had open were closed. Luckily I think I was able to recover everything from the closed applications, but is there a way to tell Dell Updates when I want to restart the computer?
Also, I was able to do this with Windows 10 before the anniversary update, but the option seems to have disappeared in the settings now.

Yes, when you have Windows 10, the BIOS can still be updated.
NOTE: BIOS version 2.5.1 is required, when new CPU Support was added.

About six months ago, I upgraded the hard drive for my Dell Inspiron 2200 from the original 25 GB to a Western Digital 120 GB. Two weeks ago, the drive failed and I returned the drive to Western Digital for replacement. Today I received the replacement drive and Western Digital has sent me a 250 GB drive. My problem is that the original BIOS (1.10 A03) supports a maximum drive size of 120 GB. I've checked Dell's website and as far as I can determine, none of the BIOS updates address a larger hard drive. Can anyone verify that I am correct about this? I can't email Dell about it, since my warranty has expired. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I run a server at night to run a program file and every now and then it crashes and comes up CLOSE program.exe as an error ( i turnred error reporting off - still comes up though)

Anyway since i cant get rid of this error message is it possible to have a prog to auto kill this when it crashes? OR

A prog that can restart the program/ process on a crash or hang?

A:Auto restart a process or auto kill on CRASH or HANG

Have a look in the Event Viewer through the control panel-> administrative tools. Look at both "system" and "applications" . If you can determine the program that is giving the error you will want to reinstall that troublesome program.

So after installing Windows 10 I decided to update my drivers and one of them was the "BIOS Update" after a while the update stopped at "sending the update image to FW for verification" and it's stuck on 3%. I'm not a computer wizard so your help is appreciated. Also if you're wondering , I'm using the Dell Inspiron 3847.

Bios updates require special installation and must be done alone. It cannot be done with other drivers. Bios updates should be done before updating to win 10 not after. Use caution updating bios since it can brick your computer.
You should not be updating the drivers yourself. Go to Dell Drivers and downloads and let the scanner tell you what windows 10 drivers you need--

Hi all, yesterday I tried to update my Dell XPS12 (9Q33 mid 2013) BIOS to the last version (A08). During the installation, the laptop remained stuck in "EC programming" at 50%..I waited two hours but nothing changed and my PC was unusable: completely blocked, no keyboard,no touch and even the windows clock was blocked.
So, as I read in a lot of BIOS-related threads, I removed the AC adaptor and let it discharge completely..some users resolved with this workaround, and their PC's worked well after.
Unfortunately, my XPS12 doesn't want to power up anymore..I also tried to put the .hdr file of the BIOS in a USB stick and tried to power up with "end" button pressed. It powers up and the fans are working, but nothing happens then..Am I using the wrong procedure to repair the BIOS?

Thanks in advance,

Fabio

Good day ,
To help me resolve this issue I would ask your assistance by performing these troubleshooting steps,
1)Remove all the peripheral components from the system .2)Disconnect the charger from the system ,battery from the system and perform the power drain test on the system .
3)Plug in the charger back and use F2 key to get into BIOS then use F9 key to reset the BIOS to default settings.
4)If you are unable to get to the BIOS page or if there are any concerns do reply to this post with the service tag of the system (sent via private message ) so that I can look into the specifications of the system to assist you better .
Awaiting your reply .
Have a great day ahead !

I went to the Dell product page for my computer - Dell XPS 8500, and ran the scan to check for updates.  3 updates, one of them for BIOS.  I ran the updates and initiated the BIOS update.  Midway through it appeared to get hung up and my machine froze.  I left it for an hour, came back and still no luck.
So I rebooted the machine and of course now it won't boot up.  I have power and can hear the fan, but no lights on the box and no screen input.
Looking though the manual and on this forum, I've tried resetting the BIOS jumpers, and removing the CMOS battery.  When I rebooted I saw lights on the box this time but it shut down after 30 seconds, and now back to the same problem.
From what I read on this forum I'm SOL unless I buy a new motherboard.
Just thought I'd check if anyone had any other suggestions.  If not, where can I get  a new motherboard for this?  The product page for my model doesn't list it as an option...

Thanks for your help!

A:Failed BIOS update - Dell XPS 8500

When did your warranty expire? If it expired less than 6 months ago, you might be able to get Dell to fix it, assuming they can get the board. They had a policy to replace a board -one time only- if it failed a Dell BIOS update within 6 months after the end of warranty. I don't know if that policy still exists.
Those are all different revisions of the same motherboard. I don't know what the differences are. They could be as simple as a different supplier for one of the components on the board all the way up to a change in the circuit layout.
Maybe Dell Spare Parts can tell you about the differences among the 3, or at least tell you which is the most recent revision,  even if they don't have the boards available...?
All three support the H77 chipset which is a key issue.
Look at your motherboard for the sticker to see what version you have now. If you can't find out about specific differences, you may want to get one that's the same version, assuming it's one of the choices available.
You should look elsewhere if Impact doesn't have the revision you want and/or for price comparisons. And always ask if the board is new, used, refurbished and about the warranty.

Hello guys, I'm new to this forum. And I hope I find a solution here.

It all started when I was updating drivers and came across updating the BIOS on my working Dell XPS 400. After Updating it, the BIOS was flashed. Once it rebooted a Post showing came up and at the bottom it said "BIOS updated successfully. AFTER that the computer made a total of 6 long beeeeeeeps with no display, monitor light is orange not green. So I shut down the computer and try to turn it on...it turns on for a half of a second and powers down...after 3 seconds it turns on...however no Display...no light on the keyboard or mouse..I just get those 6 long beeeeeeps one after the other.

I tried the following:
-removing battery for 30secs=Did not work
-removing battery for 30mins=Did not work
-Clearing the CMOS, moving the jumpers from 1/2 to 2/3=Did not work

I was read some similar problems and most say the Mobo could be dead. How could a simple BIOS update cause this. There has to be a solution. Anyhow I yet have to try removing the RAM, Vcard, any other attached hardware inside to see what happens. I cannot hit any keys on a keyboard that does not respond aswell..so that holding the insert key=Did not work

A:DELL Wants To Update My System BIOS: Questions On, Please ?

The BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is the chip that controls your system during boot up until it is "transferred" to the OS itself.
(That's a nutshell description, but should suffice here).

It is not the OS, but the SW "Guts" of your computer (Motherboard).

Whether or not to upgrade:

First, what does the update correct? They should list that info, or link to it.

In general, I'm the type to always update the BIOS if a new firmware is released, that said though, my mainboard has three separate BIOS's that I can switch to, so if one is borked by an update, or changes I make, I can go back to the original (I leave one on the original for that purpose).

If all is well on your system, you do not have to perform the update at all, and that may be the best advice I can give you, especially if you are questioning it to begin with, but if you are willing to do it, depending on what it may change for your system, it may be worthwhile.

I'll review it and post later, or others may chime in as they see fit.

UPDATE: I checked the Dell site for your system, but don't see an update for today, that's not to say anything malicious is going on, but can you give more details on the pop up?

What version it wants to update you to? Etc.
You could also boot into your BIOS and give us the version you are on, if you are several versions "behind" the most current one, it may also be beneficial to do it, again depending on what I outlined above.

A:Bios update failed - Dell Precision M4600

That is NOT the issue! There is nothing wrong with the M4600 motherboards per se.
Everybody has been trying to find why when trying a BIOS upgrade, the system immediately fails with a basic "BIOS Update Failed" and no specific error code or more explanation. The answer is in the PDF document below - that is the message displayed when BIOS authentication fails!
You just have to look up the Dell Signature Firmware 'feature' that was introduced into a number of laptop incl the M4600.  Download PDF doc. That was a feature introduced per NIST requirements.
In a nutshell, they changed the way BIOS authenticates a BIOS file before it will use it to update the BIOS & EC firmware. The M4600 is in the list of "Legacy Systems" where this was introduced. Basically, these systems did NOT have the Signature Firmware when produced.
Version A04 introduced this feature. After you install that, you will have an option to turn the Signature Firmware requirement On (default is Off). Once turned On, it can NOT be turned off!
The problem starts in BIOS ver A08. Something in the code is wrong. Because on some M4600s it updates the BIOS AND Activates the Signature Firmware requirement. After that, the system will NOT authenticate ANY other BIOS versions so you will NOT be able to upgrade past version 8!
I manage many, many systems for a company. I am currently sitting on 33 (yes, that many) M4600 with that exact same situation!

A:Dell Inspiron 15R 5521 BIOS update error.

No -- 5G is more than enough free space for a BIOS flash.  Is the system failing to recognize the AC adapter (F2 at powerup to check)?
If it is, the BIOS won't flash - this is a hardware problem a BIOS update won't fix -- either the adapter, the DC jack or the mainboard is bad.

Hi,
Any advice?
I have a 9010 SFF that was working fine, except that it would not install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.  Repeatedly, about 30% through the update it failed with a BSOD. I tried several times.
Somewhere I read that the BIOS might need updating so I headed over to DELL support.  I let the website automatically detect my system and it found a recommended BIOS update, version A24.
I initiated the BIOS update from the website and it seemed to run successfully but when the PC rebooted it hung half way through POST.
On a second attempt to start the machine - nothing - no display, no light, just will not start.
I tried clearing the NVRAM as indicated on the DELL website here: www.dell.com/.../SLN284985
I tried both the RTCRST jumper method and the battery removal method.
The result - it now continuously reboots but still no POST, no display, nothing.
I should add that during the original BIOS update, the PC had a Quadro 600 graphics card and a LSI 9200-8e SAS adapter card inside. They had both been working faultlessly and were removed when I tried to reset the BIOS NVRAM.
Any suggests on what next to recover my "bricked" desktop?

Hello,
So as it says in the title i have a 4 years old Inspiron 7720, and for the larger portion of that period of time it worked like a charm.
However lately it started doing some quirky things.
About two weeks ago my GPU (GeForce GT 650M) just disappeared from my Device Manager. I tried updating my GPU drivers, updating Windows (10) but it didn't seem to change anything. So i did some digging and found this: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19498450
Apparently I'm not the only one who encounterd this problem and there is a solution.HOWEVER, whenever I try to flash my BIOS an error pops up which reads: "ERROR 105 - Command line error! Status = 105."
I searched and found more users that experienced this problem, but the only solution I managed to find was reinstalling the OS, which is quite a drastic measure.
Is there any other way to fix this error?Thank you

Hi Dell fans,  just hoping for a bit of direction with this issue:
I have an inspiron 7535 laptop that has started powering off after about 30 minutes of use.  no warning, no graceful shutdown, just straight to power-off.  I've cleaned and serviced it, the normal dell heatsink paste was dry as a nuns hip flask, so that's been renewed and and it's cooling just fine, but i dont think that is the problem.  Mainly because you can turn it straight back on and continue working for another period of time without any need for a cool-down.

My gut instinct is saying BIOS issues.  It's currently at versions A05 31/Oct/2013 and the latest from the support is A13 Release date 15 Jun 2015 (Last Updated 02 Aug 2015) however i cannot get this to install.
If I install within windows (10 x64)  it runs the extractor and flashed up a command window too fast to read the error. and I cannot find any logs it might create.  the command line options dont do anything.  every version does the same thing back to A06.  I seem to see something about intel in the message but cannot really read it in full.
i've also tried booting off a freedos disk and trying all versions too.  this extracts okay and gives error 8743: unknown or unsupported platform, cannot locate hardware platform identification this program cannot be run on the current plaform BIOS version too old please use the latest BIOS to flash.
Any ideas? either on the random pow... Read more

Hello and Thanks in Advance.

I am experiencing BSOD crashes and a buggy driver could be the culprit. Dell recommends updating the BIOS prior to the drivers.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/982135-learned-source-problem-bsod-but.html

I checked Dell's website and the current BIOS for my machine is A08 and my system at present is A05, so maybe this should be done anyway.

The BIOS update is just a .exe file.and its description is "Dell Computer Flash BIOS Upgrade."

I am afraid to run the BIOS update in "normal mode" because of these persistent crashes. Who knows what state my computer will be in if it crashes/freezes during a BIOS update.

My computer runs fine in "Safe Mode." Would it be OK to update my BIOS through Safe Mode so that I don't have to worry about my computer crashing in the middle of the update? Does the computer care if this is done through safe or normal mode? Should I log in as an administrator to do this also?

If anyone has any advice, I am all ears. Thanks!

Chris
