Hi: What is the full model # of your HP 2000? You will need to order a set of recovery disks if the F11 recovery manager option isn't working.

Help?

A:Missing operating system on startup

Hi

Please post the full spec of your PC (Make and model of Motherboard, CPU , HDD , RAM etc ) in case it is an assembled one and Model number and service tag in case it is a Laptop or Branded PC.

"Missing Operating System" is generally happens due to corrupted boot code . Boot code corruption may be happened due to a failing HDD. Please try the following steps.

1 ) Replace the SATA cable (in case of PC. If you don't have a spare one swap with DVD drive cable) or remove and re insert the HDD if it is a Laptop.

2 )Boot from the Windows 7 DVD and follow this step by step tut to do an automatic startup repair attempt :

  http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/ss/windows-7-startup-repair.htm

If the above steps can't solve your issue, then we need to test your HDD health before performing any manual repair attempt. Waiting for your reply.

Hi, I apologize if this isn't the right subforum but I saw a couple old posts about this in General.

Yesterday one of my kittens knocked my laptop off my chair causing it to hit my PC tower on the way to the ground. My tower immediately froze and when I went to restart it manually I accidentally pushed the reset button instead. (It's the button on the right) Upon doing this my computer restarted and gave me the Missing Operating System error.

Since then I have tried several things from pressing F8 and specifying the drive to boot from, to entering several commands listed here to booting from my Win7 disk and running startup repair. This final option I did a couple times last night rather uneventfully but today it failed. Under problem details it gave me this:

Problem Signature:
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline
Problem Signature 01: 0.0.0.0
Problem Signature 02: 0.0.0.0
Problem Signature 03: unknown
Problem Signature 04: 0
Problem Signature 05: unknown
Problem Signature 06: 1
Problem Signature 07: unknown
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

I don't know if this information is relevant or helpful but I thought I'd include it anyway v0v

edit: I just told Windows to go ahead look for a solution and it claims I have an attached device that needs to be removed, which I don't.

edit2: Would a total reinstallation of Win7 fix the problem?

Any advice is appreciated.

A:Missing Operating System/Startup Repair Failure

First, I would open the tower and check to see if all the connections to the hard drive, etc. are still secure.

So I've encountered something strange with my computer. I was performing maintenance that had a long time coming, and decided to take out some of my startup programs. Now I know to keep Microsoft Windows Operating System, however when I looked in msconfig, it's not there. At all. As far as restore points go, I have none (have already tried), and reinstallation is out of the question, not to mention it doesn't make sense that I should because the computer is reacting as if it's in there and checked. I'm thinking it may have something to do with a registry setting.

I'm running Windows 7 Home 64 bit. The last time I remembered it in there was sometime last year. Maybe a little before that. I just knew to leave it alone. I mean if there's no way to fix it without a reinstall, I'll just suffer with it not being in there as I know it's reacting as if it were active as my gadgets are working, my system boots up fine, everything runs just peachy. I've used programs like CCleaner in the past as well, I don't know if that could be the issue too, I don't have any backups of the registry either. It's a head scratcher for sure though, not seeing it there, yet everything being fine and dandy. Any ideas?

A:Microsoft Windows Operating System missing from msconfig startup.

Hey all! I am pretty new to this kind of Win7 issues, so I hope some of you will be able to help. Story goes...

After few hours of gaming the computer died. (It happened right after switching keyboards.) Now, on every setup BIOS(?) comes up with list of options (F2 enter BIOS, F11 boot options, F6 Flash etc.). After that a black screen with error message comes up: Missing Operating System.

I tried rebooting from USB (since I have no disk-drive) and I keep on getting the answer: Error Loading Operating System.

Any ideas?

Thx

A:Missing Operating System/Error Loading Operating System

All unlikely, but possible - (a) your HDD died. (b) your bios became corrupted (c) your HDD boot sector became corrupted (d) your HDD partition is corrupted.

Does the drive spin up when you switch on (feel it)?
Check the bios to see if the HDD is reported correctly and is at the top of the boot order.
Find a bootable CD - an OS installer, or create Easeus partition manager bootable CD http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm and boot from it. What does the HDD look like with Easueus?

I just upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Win7 professional x64 hoping to fix the above mentioned problem. After a complete re-install Im getting the same errors.

Im not sure of the proper terminology here, but during startup the computer does a scan of all hardware and "Volume 0" has a "failed" message.

The odd thing is that sometimes after a few restarts and pointless boot menu visits the computer starts up fine.

I tried windows repair feature by booting from the disk, but when I get to the window where i select the operating system to repair, its empty. Drive C, where the operating system is, is not showing.

I have a feeling that the hard drive itself has gone bad and is very unstable. Please let me know if I'm missing something or we just need to get a new HD.

Thank you

A:Win7 pro startup error "Boot MGR missing"/"Operating System Not Found

What type of hdd do you have. For example if you have a Seagate drive, there is software you can run to do a diagonostic on the hdd before the operating system boots.
This would be a good idea, especially if you were having same issues when Vista Home Premium was installed first.

Do you have more than one hdd installed. If yes, make sure in BIOS settings, the proper drive is selected for First Boot. And better yet make sure its the only drive attached when booting.

I'm officially out of ideas and I'm hoping you kind folk here could help me out. I have a Hp 2140 notebook whose hard disc I formatted while transfering data from it to my computer (so I could do a fresh OS). When I returned the hard disc into the notebook I found that I could not install Windows 7 by any medium. I tried plugging in an external DVD reader and installing windows 7 like I did the first time on this notebook, but it would not read from the device. BIOS recognises it only as USB LEGACY SUPPORT. When I tried installing windows 7 from an USB, like I did many times on my computer, the screen would freeze when I pressed any key to boot from USB. I tried changing USB ports for the devices I used, it did not help and I tried changing USB memory sticks from which I booted but alas no success. I don't know if there is a way of transfering the files from the dvd onto the hard disc, make it bootable somehow, and then install the OS on the hard drive (the same one). I also tried installing other OS using the same methods (Windows 8 and XP) but have had the same problems. P.S. I haven't tried preinstalling a system on the hard drive on another computer and then inserting the HD into the notebook, hoping it would boot. I tried that once on a comuter and have had no success. Please do help, cheers

The short answer is NO, as the CD that shipped with the Hp? is only compatible with their machines.

I suggest that you purchase a Windows? XP CD (OEM version) as they are now fairly reasonably priced.

A:[SOLVED] Notebook unable to find operating system at start-up

When you see a system trying to boot via the network card, it usually means the hard drive cannot be read. You could try removing and reinserting the drive a few times to clean the contacts but, it probably won't help. More often than not, they're dead and need to be replaced.

When i start my pc, i get a 30 second count down to either choose an operating system or system restore. if i choose windows xp professional, everything is fine. when i choose restore point, i get "INF file textsetup.sif is corrupt or missing, status 14. setup cannot continue. press any key to continue".
choosing last known best settings hasnt changed this situation either.
basically i just dont want to see this screen, it prolongs the computer start up. i just got it today as a refurbed hp desktop from buy.com. i tried system properties, advanced, startup settings and unchecked both boxes, as well as clearing the boot.iti file to no avail.
a rep at hp that was nice enough to just give me an opinion said i need the disk that came w the pc, which i obviously cant get. any ideas?
thank you so much for your time.

You probably could purchase the disk from the manufacturer. They make a lot of money selling them to people.

Post the manufacturer & model of the computer, and verify the exact text of the message. That message is odd.

I am having problems starting up Windows 2000 on my computer. It seems to be booting up just fine and then I get a message that says "error opening operating system" and nothing else happens. And now this is where I am really screwed, I somehow managed to lose my original windows stuff including the recovery cd during a move. I don't know much about computers, but I'd assume that I'd need that recovery cd to fix my problem. My question is how I should go about fixing this problem. And of course being a poor college student I need a cost-friendly solution. Do I need to buy a whole new Windows 2000? Is there some way that I can just get a recovery cd? Or do I need to take it in somewhere to get fixed? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Windows 2000: error opening operating system

You really need a win 2000 cd and perform the windows recovery using this, if you have truly lost the disk you either need a good friend who will loan you a cd or you need to buy one (Student License is cheaper !). Taking to repair outlet will not help as they will require you to supply license and cd or purchase them!

The computer gets to the windows 2000 screen and then restarts the booting process again. It actually shuts down and then restarts itself. Please help!

A:Problem Booting Windows 2000 Operating System

Hiya and welcome

Can you get to safeMode:

If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
When you see the black-and-white Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen, start tapping the F8 key. The Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu appears.
Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected. In most cases, it is the first item in the list and is selected by default.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Ah, I see that you've already tried the options in F8. Have you tried the option Last Known Good Configuration?

1. Restart the computer.
2. Press F8 when you receive the following message:
Please select the operating system to start
3. In Windows Advanced Option Menu, use the arrow keys to select Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.
4. If you are running other operating systems on the computer, click Microsoft Windows 2000 from the list that is displayed, and then press ENTER.

WARNING: After you start your computer by using the last known good configuration, changes that you made since the last successful startup are lost.

If you can start your computer by using the last known good configuration, the last change that you made to the computer (for example, the installation of a driver) may be the cause of the incorrect startup behavior. Ran Ccleaner last night on windows 7 64 and everything was fine. Then this morning when the computer re-started, it says missing operating system and windows will not start or read any discs. checked to make sure CD was 1st in the boot menu. And I am currently running diagnostics on my hard drive. So far everything is passing.

A:Missing Operating System?

When you used CCleaner, did you use the registry cleaner portion of the app?

If your drive passes diagnostics, I would try to do a System Restore to a time prior to using CCleaner--which I think you can access from a Windows install disc, if you cannot boot at all.

A:Missing Operating System

Welcome to TSG....

Contact the manufacturer of the computer and order a complete set of recovery disks for thsi computer, they will arrive via snail mail with in two weeks after paying for them.

Also while you are waiting you can remove the hard drive from this computer and install it as a slave drive on the second IDE cable and when it is seen by windows then manually backup all of the important data from this drive to the computer it is installed in and burn to another media like CD-R's, DVD or other media that you prefer.

After this is done if you are impatient you can press F10 and try to restore the computer back to when the computer was brand new but this looses all of the data.

I am in need of help again. While I can usually troubleshoot almost any problem, there have been a few that have thrown me for a loop, and this is one of them.

Yesterday Microsoft released a number of updates for Windows Vista. I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Only 3 of the updates installed, although I couldn't tell you which ones. The system prompted me to restart and upon restart I get "missing operating system". I can't get to the boot selection screen to even try safe mode. I tried booting off of the DVD and doing a repair, only to find that my hard drive can't be found, or at least not the Windows installation on it. It's a SATA drive and the drive letter is able to be found when I tell it to look for drivers, although it says the file format is wrong. Microsoft tried to tell me it could be a bad hard drive. Yeah, could be, but it happened at the exact moment I restarted after installing their update. My thought is that it's a corrupted boot sector or boot loader. Any ideas, possible fixes?

Hi there,

I am getting this message on my laptop that tells me "operating system is missing". This is supposedly to do with my hard drive either being broken, or the black cable connecting it is damaged! I opened up the computer and while the cable looks in tact, it has a bit of fraying at the end that connects to the motherboard, so what I would appreciate some help with is what I should do next. I would rather not seek a PC repair company because chances are I can fix the computer myself!

A:''missing operating system'' ???

Sadly, the only way to fix this is though a installation disk or a recovery disk. Also, some manufactures sell a recovery disk for ~25 USD. this does depend on the manufacturer of your PC (dell, HP, and the like)

Also, is this a duel-boot, or just two PCs (under your name it lists XP and Vista)

Boot into BIOS setup to see if the hard drive is detected at all under Storage drives or in the Boot order. If not you'll need to try reinstalling it to see if you can get it to be detected. If it can't be detected you'll need to replace it.

Reset BIOS to defaults to see if you can boot a disk: How to Boot A Computer from CD or DVD - YouTube

Once you can boot a disk you can try to rescue your data using Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console from the Windows disk to another hard drive, external drive or flash stick. If you have all three you can try writing the Win7 installation media to flash stick to see if it will boot, but you must copy your data out to external then.

Once you can boot the disk you can also access System Recovery Options to run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times.

If these fail then everything else that can be done to start Win7 including hardware tests to confirm the hardware status is in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start leading up to if necessary rescuiing your data to reinstall.

I turned on my Dell Latitude Laptop which immediately displayed "missing operating system".

I restarted the computer and got the same message.
I restarted and pressed F12 for reboot options and ran diagnostics. All passed.
No other functions are available.

Is there a program I can download to a flash drive to boot up the computer to run a virus scan.

I am using Windows 10

A:Missing Operating System

Even the HDD diags passed too? Cause it sounds like no HDD is being detected. I'd you press f12 for boot options and select internal hard disk does it work? Does it give an error?

Hi. . .

The recovery DVDs must be burned per the manufacturer's instructions so they are bootable discs.

Also, make sure that your BIOS settings place the DVD drive 1st in boot-up order.

You should have a manufacturer recovery partition on your system - the majority of Vista Systems do.

I am getting the message of "Missing Operating System" on the computer and the computer will not boot up. It is an old Dell (2000?) and belongs to a friend of mine.

I am NOT well versed in all this computer verbage but think if someone gave me some advice, I might be able to fix it.

I should also say that before I get the message "Missing operating system" a computer message comes on of "enter F2 for setup and f12 for boot menu."

I have a feeling I was in the BIOS part of the computer and might have switched a setting.

Help me please.

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspirion desktop. About 10 days ago I installed Windows 7 on this computer. Everything has been working fine, did all the Windows updates. Today I turned the computer on an it says "Missing Operating System".

Before I installed Windows 7, I ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. I met all requirements. Also ran the compatibility wizard.

After installing Windows 7, I have rebooted the computer dozens of times after updating.

I'm hoping someone could help me this problem. I'm trying to avoid reinstalling Windows 7 again. But if I need to reinstall Windows 7 again that's not a problem.

Thanks,
Mike

You can boot up from your Windows media (dvd?) and go to the repair options on the 2nd page.
From there, you can do an automatic startup repair which will hopefully repair your machine.

I am at a complete standstill. I used my recovery CD's and reinstalled the software that came with my laptop. After a couple of weeks, I began getting the BSOD. I did all of the obvious things, decided to reinstall again. Now when I turn the laptop on, I see the Toshiba logo and it immediately goes to a black screen with the message "missing operating system." I have a separate diskette drive with bootable disks; I can't get past the message. I can not boot from the A: nor will it let be access the CD drive to reinstall a clean version of Windows XP. I have also pressed the del key when turning the laptop on. It only leads to a message to hit the F1 key. When I hit the F1 key, it goes directly back to the original message, "missing operating system." What can I do to resolve this situation. All files are backed up so there is no concern there. Help!

swabbye7 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about missing operating system and wanted to help -- but need more information. If you can, please follow the directions in this link to find the detailed product number of your PC: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824?jumpid=reg_r1002_usen_c-001_title_r0001If that is not possible, then look for a sticker on the PC that includes the product number and post that here.  If the battery is removable, the sticker is likely to be in the battery compartment. Also, need to know what Windows version your PC is running. We need that information because troubleshooting steps are different for the various Windows OSs.IF it's running Win10, did it come with that preinstalled?  If not, what was the prior OS of the machine and how long ago did you do the Win10 Upgrade?  And, was your machine OK after the Upgrade or were you having problems, and if so, what were those problems? We can proceed once you provide the information. Thanks

Hi

Have just registered to see if anyone has any ideas for a solution to a problem with my that is running Windows 7 (I think 64bit). It refuses to boot and just says "missing operating system".

Using the repair option on a boot disc does not work (have tried 3 times)
If I boot using a windows 7 cd/dvd I only get given the option to install windows.
I can see both hard drives in the BIOS.
I am able to get to a DOS prompt using the boot disc, but have no idea about DOS myself.
When booting from the Windows 7 cd I was able to see the C: drive but it would not open, saying it needs formatting before use.

I think that's about it, will post anything else relevant if I think of anything.

Any ideas? Hoping my drive is not dead :/

Thanks

d:

diskpart
select disk 0

ditto for selecting volume d to get the following:

Suggestions would be appreciated. I do not have a backup of the SSD drive. While it would not be a major disaster if I had to reformat the drive and do a clean install, I'd prefer making a good effort to recover the data. I have limited computer knowledge. Thanks.

for the harddrive capacitys quoted can we assume that means remaining free space? If I were you I would put a new high capacity harddrive in and reload XP then use one or the other as a slave drive or use them as external usb connected backup drives.

After turning my computer back on I got a "Missing Operating System" message. I managed to fix the problem by using Repair from the install disc. Now I'm just wondering why it happened. The only explanation I can think of is that it had something to do with my external hard drive. I left it plugged in when I turned the system off. The reason I suspect the external hard drive is because I read about someone else who had a similar problem due to their USB ReadyBoost thumb drive. But does anyone know exactly why this happens?

Hello

This is my first post on the forum so excuse me if i make any mistakes

Last night, i let my PC on to run a disk defragment and when i woke up i realized that it was crashed, my monitor was on but i couldn't see anything on the screen so i restarted the PC.

Then i got the error Missing Operating System.
I accessed the BIOS and i noticed that the Primary IDE Master/Slave were not detected.
Then i inserted the Windows 7 disk to perform a repair and it didn't detect any operating systems. I clicked on Load Drivers but i couldn't access any of the drivers and it asked me to perform a format.

I've also attached some pictures of the screen to help you understand the problem.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

A:Missing Operating System

Welcome vpro

It looks like disk defrag may have wiped your bootable OS. It looks like your bios only shows you have 2 SATA HD connected to the MB. If you do not have any IDE HDs, that is why Primary Master/Slave were not detected. Normally the Bootable SATA HD should be on the first SATA connection on the MB. Your 5th pic, in the background says (4) Hard Disk Drives ? Could you please give a few more details of your hardware specs ? How much data & programs were on your Boot HD ?

I have had a long 16 hour work day, already so I don't want to advise you what do do yet without more info & hopefully some more of our Guru members will see your thread also.

If the OS was installed where is it? It does not matter whether or not you can burn a CD, you can even borrow one; you need a key number and that will cost $150 for an upgraded DVD and more for a full version. There may be a key on the computer, take a look

Can anyone help me with a real problem i've encountered with an old p.c

I had to reinstall windows XP home edition on a friends p.c that had completely frozen up.
This was sucessful and i loaded all the security gear back on, did all the p.c maintenance (defrag etc). I found that there was no sound on windows media player. Having acertained through the troubleshooter that the drivers were working properly, a friend said i should check the bios and see if the sound card was still switched on.

Having necer done anything like this before he said i should press delete on boot up and that would take me to the bios screen. This i did, i found that the soundcard was switched on so tried to exit but had to press N in the save changes box to escape.

Since that i have not been able to boot the system up. It flashes the p.c info (american trends etc) then i get a black screen sayin "Missing operating system" when this appears the hard drive light goes out and the only way i can get out of it is to press Ctl-alt-del or switch the tower off which restarts on its own and tries to boot up again.

I have been back into this bios page to see if there was a restore defaults button but there are only F buttons for optimum settings etc.

this appears to be a non standard build p.c all i can tell you is that it was built in 2001, has a AMD athelon 2.0 processor, 256mb ram and 60Gb hard drive also has 350amp P/S

Any help or clues as what to do next would be most welcome

Brand new Vista 32 bit Business computer - just 2 weeks old. Tried to partition C: drive (using Acronis Disk Director Suite). On first reboot, gave dos message "Missing operating system".

Went into bios, tried loading failsafe defaults - no success. Having googled on this, I came to the conclusion that I needed to boot from my Vista installation disc to do a Windows Repair etc. I tried to do this (having set this boot option in bios), but when it gets to the Press Any Key to Boot from CD bit, the error message "Missing Operating System" comes up again.

At this stage I am not too concerned if I lose what little data is on the C: drive (though it would be nice to think I could still recover it) - more concerned to just get Vista up and running without having to buy a new HDD.

Help! Where do I go from here?

Gordon

A:Missing operating system

It looks like you either formatted the wrong partition, or formatted the entire drive. This message is shown when there is no operating system, or if the master boot record is corrupt.

Do you have your Vista installation disc? A Startup Repair should fix the MBR situation if that's all that went wrong.

A:Missing Operating System

Welcome to TSF

This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

* The basic input/output system (BIOS) does not detect the hard disk.
* The hard disk is damaged.
* Sector 0 of the physical hard disk drive has an incorrect or malformed master boot record (MBR).

Note Some third-party programs or disk corruption can damage an MBR.
* An incompatible partition is marked as Active.

Your hard drive has failed. If the pawn shop did not provide disks or you did not get the Dell - Ownership Transfers you'll need to purchase a Hard drive and you'll also need to purchase an operating system.

So, I have a toshiba satellite m55-s135 which was running a fully updated windows XP. However, after installing some virus scan software tonight I had to restart my computer. When I did this I was greeted with the following message: Missing Operating System. I have no doubt that this is due to a virus. I have tried booting from a windows XP disc but the process stops at the screen which says: Starting Windows. Windows never actually starts however. I have also tried booting from my toshiba recovery disk but am unable to do a partial recovery and rather it says I need to reformat my hard drive.

My Question is this: does anyone know of another way of reinstalling an OS other than reformatting? Or perhaps a way of regaining at least some of my data after I reformat? I know that wiping a hdd tends to still leave traces of data; is there a way to reclaim these bits?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode?Another thing you can try is to boot your computer using a boot CD such as the UBCD. You should then be able to copy stuff off the drive before you go for the format option.

If you have data that is valuable, don't do anything hasty.

There is a chance that the HDD is faulty, which means that your data may not be recoverable, but in hope that it is, I would recommend removing the HDD and connecting it as a slave drive to another PC running XP (or 2000) using an adapter. Then trying to recover the data.

Anything you do with the HDD in the laptop is high risk to your data.

As any HDD is one of the most failure prone devices in a PC, having valuable data that is not backed up is never a good idea, under any circumstances.

My brother wants me to fix this laptop that he got from someone awhile ago. I have no idea what the history of it is or what the issue is, but I know that when I start it up, it says the OS is missing. I put in an XP disc to try to reformat it and reinstall XP, but after loading everything up, when it says it's loading XP to go to the screen where you can reformat or repair Windows and stuff, it just goes to a BSOD saying something about partmgr.sys.

I was wondering what the issue is here and if it's possible for me to reformat this drive and use it again or if I would need to buy a new one.

Thanks.

Hey all so I just picked up a machine. When I initially turned it on I got "Missing Operating System" I was able to run the Win 7 Recovery CD and fix the MBR allowing me to log in to windows. However, when I log in there are no desktop icons and the start menu is empty. I cannot access task manager either by right clicking task bar (greyed out) or hitting ctrl-alt-del (doesnt even show up)I dealt with this a while ago and it was easier to just backup the data using Sata to USB adapter and reimaging the machine. I was able to update and run Malware bytes and the scan came back clean. I also installed and ran AVG (free) with latest definitions again clean. I ran Kaspersky on the drive while it was slaved from my pc and it said there was one infected file but of course my license expired last week so no resolution haha.

Anyways, Im under the impression this is a rootkit and can be cleaned. When the drive is slaved I can see the data. I dont want to back everything up and do a restore and run the risk of restoring the virus. I am gonna try RKill and security essentials to see if I can make any headway.

Its an HP Tower running 32 bit Win 7. Nothing fancy. Dual core processor couple gigs of ram. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Looks like there is a possible problem with the hard drive.

Boot into the BIOS (System Setup menu) and check to see if the hard drive is detected properly.

I used revo to uninstall that useless Pinnacle video editing software and the 200+ GB's of files and other junk associated with it. fter it ran, I used the revo tool that erases the unused space, IE permanently gets rid of, that those files used. I used Crap cleaner afterwards. I rebooted fine. I then started messing with my RAM voltages a little and when i went to boot I get, "Operating System Missing."

I have set my voltages back to levels at which the computer WAS working....... operating system missing
I have used the WD utility to check the hard drive, it checks out fine.
I have inserted my Vista installation disc (retail 64 bit Vista), and tried to do both a restore and and repair. "No operating system."
Bios sees the HDD as did the bootable WD HDD utility. I have an option in the repair (Vista disc) to load drivers, but what file is it that I use to load the drivers?

Any suggestions on how I can recover this HDD? While losing my data won't stop the world, I have about 2 years worth of articles I wrote that I don't want to lose along with my COD WAW profile lol, (not to mention some kick ass recipes I found over the last 18 month's lol). Besides, I'm hard headed and sick to death of the Microsoft typical "Reformat and re-install" method of fixing any minor OS problem. That's not a solution, that's dropping a nuke to get rids of a fly that's bothering you, sure the fly is gone but.............

Hi all,

I got a blue screen error message saying "memory dump". Now when I start my computer it says "missing operating system".
1. I tried to reinstall Windows 7/64 bit with my installation disk. Didn't work.
2. Tried to use a system restore disk that I made when the computer was new. Didn't work.
3.Tried to boot up from an old HD with windows on it. No luck
4. Tried to boot up in the safe mode. Got the same error message.

What more can I do to recover my missing operating system?
How does a computer "lose" an operating system?

Thanks for your help,
Dan

A:Missing OPERATING system

That sounds like either hard drive corruption or end of hard drive. Can you boot to safe mode? Or better yet "Repair My Computer". From there you can run "chkdsk /r" from cmd prompt which is available but make sure it points to "c" drive first.
To help more we need to know make and model of laptop or desktop.

i tried to turn on my computer and missing operating system wont let me what does this mean ?? i have a newer computer and am running vista....how did this happen thanksss

A:missing operating system

Welcome to TSF

The "Missing Operating System" (white "DOS" text on black screen, top
left) is usually from BIOS when it can't find anything to boot.

Can be due to:
- HD is defective or corrupted
- HD is not selected as a boot device
- a non-bootable disk is found before the HD in the boot order

Try this:
- insert your Vista DVD
- allow the "press a key to boot DVD" prompt to go by
- does Vista boot?

If Vista boots this way, then it's most likely the HD isn't in the
boot order, or there may be something wrong with the Master Boot
Record (MBR) code.

Is the system still under warranty? Find the manufacturer of your hard drive and run their Hard Drive Diagnostics Utility. Or there may be diagnostic utility already on a partition on the drive. Press F12 to see if there is a utility to use.

Sounds to me like the harddrive is dead/dying. I would suggest performing a repair install with your Windows CD (if possible).

For the 2nd time in three days, when I attempt to boot, I got the error message "Missing Operating System". When I first contacted Hewlett Packard, they told me that the MBR was missing or corrupted and that I would have to reinstall everything.

I did!

Now, two days latter, I get the same message ... from the computer and from Hewlett Packard.

I'm not sure what happened the first time, but the most recent occurance happened when I attempted to reboot to Vista after running a Linux Live CD (SimplyMepis). I did not install Linux, just ran it off the CD. I closed down Linux, took the CD out of the drive, and attempted to boot to Vista. Result "Missing Operating System".

I've checked the boot order in the BIOS and even changed it so that the hard drive booted first. This didn't work.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this without a reinstall?

Does anyone have any idea as to the cause of the problem?

Does anyone have any idea how to avoid this in the future?

I sure need your help. Thanks.

Hey there!

I have a Dell XPS 8300, and after being away for 10 days, I came back to my computer and saw Missing Operating System...

I've done everything, and all the symptoms are as same as yours (thorough checking says all disks are ok, cannot get C: drive to show up in MS DOS)...
How did you fix yours??

Thanks!

Jim

@xsailor please do not hijack someone else's thread. Please start your own thread, as your issues are different then the OP's
Usually when it says Missing OS that means that the HDD has failed. On another computer download the ISO image for Seatools in my signature. Burn the image to CD using IMGBurn also in my signature and boot off of the newly created CD and run the short and long tests on the HDD. If either test fails the HDD needs to be replaced.

If it says missing operating system it might mean that the harddrive has failed. If thats the case all you can do is get another harddrive as when they are toast they cant be fixed.

It seems one mystery just leads to another....

Our newest computer, DELL Optiplex 780m tower, Windows 7 Pro; after a minor glitch or two, this unit had been shut down and later started, and restarted, a number of times and all was running smoothly.

The only thing I changed, and I somehow don't really think that it has any bearing on the situation, is that, in the wee hours of last night, I installed Photoshop Elements 12.

Upon installing E12, I clicked the button that said "restart now"; the computer restarted without a hitch; I played around a bit with both sections of E12, the Editor and the Organizer, and then I shut the computer down for the night.

Then, this morning, I turn the computer on and it stops at a black screen with the message "operating system is missing"

It did not say anywhere to do this, but I pressed Ctl-Alt-Del, and it then proceeded to boot right up.

I thought this might just have been a freak occurrence, so I shut it down, waited a bit, and turned the power on again; it stopped at the same black "operating system is missing" screen; ctl-alt-del got it to start again.

History: this unit was new just days ago with a clean install of Windows 7 Pro.
Due to getting the error 0x80780119 when trying to create a system image, I used EasyBCD to relocate the boot manager to the C:\ drive after which on the next restart it said "bootmgr is missing"; I used my Windows system repair disc and it booted ... Read more

Hi everyone... I'm here begging for your knowledge to help me out of this mess my computer has got me into.I'll try to keep it short.I got the blue screen of death on Friday night, for no reason at all. I made a vista recovery disk from Neosmart as I was getting nowhere with the F8 key.Everything went fine from these instructions HERE, recovery disk loaded and went through the motions... however when it got to the part with the System recovery options, I didn't have any system on my list.I also don't know where to find one in the drives... it just wants me to keep opening folders, so I can't even select the whole C:So I click NEXT.Nothing there in the following list works.I've seen a post simalar to this one on the site but here's where my problem differs. In the command prompt the directory isX:\Sources> and not X:\windows\system32which wont allow me to type in any prompts giving me this message everytime ' ...... is not recognized as an internal or external command, orperable program or batch file'Sooooo what do I do???Anyone that can shead some light on this, I'll be soooo grateful. I'd hate to have to reinstall everything and loose all my stuff and I've no clue how I could even back them up as the system wont even start up without the recovery disk.

I had to download the updated drivers for my computer that has windows 2000 loaded on another computer. The drivers were too big to copy to a 3 1/4 floppy, so I copied the drivers to a cd disc. When I try to update the drivers using the cd disc, the pop up screen say "this is not a valid mfg hardware update." I know they are valid because I copied them from the mfg website. How can I get these drivers installed in c:\winnt folder since the first place the installation looks for is files that are under this particular folder first and then ask if you have disk. Any help will be gladly apppreciated. Thanks

Hi ja50us, Welcome to TSG !!

I did the exact same thing. I downloaded the new drivers for mine to CD (video, MB, audio, nic, etc.). I opened device manager, Right clicked the device I wanted, selected properties. Clicked on update driver, Then pointed to the cd. Found the driver and installed it. Did that for each one.

Hi everyone.

Where do I start. I have Windows XP SP3
I was looking at getting software to cloan a drive that I'm going to replace in a rebuild. So I loaded Norton Ghost on my own PC to try it first. Here starts the problem. When I loaded and tried this, Ghost rebooted my PC but it failed to reboot and reported 'Missing Operating System'.
I reloaded the BIOS. Still no boot up.
Next I tried repairing windows using my original XP CD, but repair now asks for an 'Admin password'. Why it's asking for this beats me. I only loaded XP in my new PC about a year ago and I definately didn't put an Amin Password in. Is there a default password?
I'm not trying to find someones password as I know this is against the forums rules, just a default one.

Doeas anyone have a solution please?

Hi there,

When I recently added a partition to my harddrive and set it to active, but on reboot all I can get is a 'Missing Operating System'

I can assure that my BIOS are correct and I have them in the correct boot order.

What do you guys recommend I do to be able to boot back into windows 7. I would like to keep my data but if no other options work then I will resort to system restoring.

Also, if possible, is there anyway I could boot something to fix this from a USB disk rather then CD rom.
Thanks for the help
