Two years ago, I bought a computer. The computer has an Intel motherboard. That time, Intel website claimed that the maximum amount of RAM is 4gb, and so did the seller. Now, Intel changed the motherboard specifications by reducing the amount of maximum RAM to be 2gb. Thesedays, although Intel reduced the maximum RAM in specifications to 2gb, I'm thinking of increasing the amount of RAM to 4gb, so would there be risks over my computer because of doing that? If so, what are they?
Thanks previously.

I have an m7664x that I will be upgrading to 64-bit Windows 7 and I want to upgrade the RAM. According to the product specs, it has the A8M2N-LA (NodusM3) motherboard with 4 DIMMs.  On that page, it says that it supports up to 4 GB of RAM at 667 MHz. Now, I've come across a few posts here and elsewhere that suggest that it can handle more (up to 8 GB) and higher RAM speeds (PC6400 / 800 MHz) and have it recognized and utilized. Can anyone confirm that it can support up to 8 GB of RAM and with higher speeds?

Wow, what an old thread! To answer your question and to update this thread, I bit the bullet and bought 8GB of 800 MHz RAM and it's been working for close to a year now.  I seem to remember that I ran MemTest on it and it shows that it's indeed running at 800 MHz but it's been a long while since I would've done it, if I did. I also thought about upgrading the processor but already by the time I installed the RAM (close to a year ago), the compatible processors were hard to find and expensive.  Plus, the machine wasn't used for anything other than general duties and was also hampered by on-board graphics to boot.  In the end, spending extra money on RAM for a pretty old computer was the limit for me. blueeclipse86, you can try and upgrade the RAM on your machine as I did but, of course, I can't guarantee that it'll work for you.

I have the M4A785TD-V EVO motherboard, which has 4 dd3 1333mhz slots, and each pair of them support functioning in dual channel. At the moment i have 1 kingston stick of 1gb (KVR1333D3N9/1G) CL9, and 1 kingston stick of 2gb (KVR1333D3N9/2G) CL9. Note that usually i have tons of programs loading at startup and i do a lot of multi tasking.

I really need some advice here, i don't know if i should go to have as much memory as possible (6gb-8gb) so that i don't have to worry about buying more in the next 5 or more years regarding intensive gaming or the windows that will come next to seven in 64bits. I say this because so soon i don't want to have a computer using lots of virtual memory, if in later years the new windows that will come out asks tons of memory or the games themselfs, much like windows 64bits is doing in relation to the 32bits versions.

Another problem i have is, if i buy 2 x 2gb sticks, if keeping the original two sticks working at single channel will affect the performance of the new ones, even if they all work at CL9-9-9 and they are in different channels...

And at last, i ask the same question as above, but in the case i choose now a different brand of sticks other than kingston and which one you recommend...

cesm23,
I'm reading that this board only supports up to 4gb of ram. I think you should get another stick of Kingston KVR1333D3N9/2G and ditch/sell the 1gb stick.

As well 32 bit W7 only supports 4gb of ram with a practical usage of around 3.4gb.

Hey guys, I never had an issue like this occur-I am running XP Pro with SP2...I recently installed a 4th hard drive into my system so I now have 5 devices total (4 IDE and 1 SATA 80 gig drive which is my primary windows drive) I have the DVD burner and a hard drive on the primary channel, and the 2 other drives as primary/slave on secondary IDE. The problem I am now having is Windows wont recognize my optical dvd burner drive but the BIOS sees all 5 devices fine (I cant open the drive and its like there is no power). However, if I power off and unplug the drive that is set as slave sharing the same channel as the dvd burner, when I power back up the burner works fine. Does XP have a maximum amount of devices it supports?

I have a 5 - 6 year old Compaq Presario 5900T desktop with an Intel Pentium III 733 MHz processor and Windows XP SP2. The last BIOS update for it was released in 03-06-2001 and is installed.

According to the HP and Crucial site, the maximum supported amount of RAM is 384 MB. The Crucial site does make note that a BIOS update can alter that amount.

According to the Kingston and MemoryX sites, the maximum supported amount of RAM is 768 MB.

I currently have 320 MB of RAM(128 - 128 - 64) in this computer. Because I now have Windows XP SP2 in it instead of Windows 98SE, I would like to increase the RAM amount to 512 MB by replacing the 64 MB module with a 256 MB module.

Does anyone out there have personal knowledge if this computer does support 768 MB of RAM before I go through the trouble and expense of buying and installing a 256 MB module?

I have a Compaq Presario 5900T with an Intel Pentium III 733 MHz processor that I acquired a few months ago.

According to the MEMORYX site, it states the 5900T supports up to 768 MB of RAM.

According to the KINGSTON site, it states the 5900T supports up to 768 MB of RAM.

According to the CRUCIAL site, it states the 5900T supports up to 384 MB of RAM.

According to the HP/Compaq site, it states the 5900T supports up to 384 MB of RAM.

Why the conflict in RAM amounts?

I currently have 320 MB(64/128/128) installed and am running Windows 98SE, but if I decide to upgrade to Windows XP SP2, I would like to add more RAM.

I tend to lean more towards what the CRUCIAL site recommends for computer RAM, but now it has me wondering.

Hi EightForum,

I really hope you can answer this simply request.

Nowadays is pretty common to have a new Ultrabook, laptop or notebook for general purposes. A very important feature is to have a healthy battery. We all know that Lithium-batts do a terrific job and are more resistant than never, but after many years of experience, I've learnt that having a software like "Eco charge, Battery care, Smart charge...etc " is a clever and vital feature already present in major brands BUT HP, believe or not. I've just received a new Ultrabook Spectra x360 with windows 8.1, and so far I cannot find any special battery function for this request, even worst nobody can answer in their forum either; I really can't understand this flaw in HP. So, I'd like to know is there any reliable battery software that can allow me to keep the battery charge to 80% and no more, even connected to AC power.

I've seen several that keep info about battery and how to optimize but none with the simple function that I need.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

A:How can I set maximum level of battery charge for notebook

I honestly don't think it is possible to change what is built into the hardware and ACPI that ships with the computer. Would take a program that can access and change the settings in ACPI and this most likely would have to come from the manufacturer.

Terry, welcome to the forum. Here is what the specs say about maximum memory: The memory sockets on the system board can be populated with up to four industry-standard DIMMs. These memory sockets are populated with at least one preinstalled DIMM.  To achieve the maximum memory support, you can populate the system board with up to 4GB of memory configured in a high-performing dual channel mode. Here is the Hardware Reference Guide for the computer.  You will find the above information on Page 25. The maximum hard drive size with Win 7 is 2TB. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

A problem has recently developed with my Envy notebook.   About 2 weeks ago my entire wireless network began slowing down when on it.   Noticeable on all devices.    When my provider came out, checked and tweaked some issues it appeared to be ok.   I went on with my daughers HP laptop and was drawing 20-24 mbps all over the house. When I reconnected mine to the system I was only pulling 6, 3, 5, up and down.   It doesn't start right away but after a few minutes.   So I put my duaghers right next ot mine and low and behold, when I ran her's it pulled 3 - 6 also.   So I turned my wi-fi off and hers' popped right back up.   I have also tried this with an old XP mini, my i-pads etc.   As soon as mine gets on the network the speed crashes.    This also happens with no one else home and no other devies conncted. I have downloaded the latest up to date Intel driver for this network adapter and it hasn't changed anything. Any ideas?

Bill_Ving Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about wireless networking poor performance and wanted to help. My immediate guess is that you might have mixed-mode networking going on.  This happens when you have two different PCs networking in two different modes -- one using "G", the other using "N".  The wireless router (or access point) can optimize performance for either mode, but not for both.  So, the "G" mode drags down the performance of the "N" mode PC, but even worse, with the router set for mixed modes, it performs more slowly than with either PC connected by itself. Here are some other troubleshooting steps you can try: HP PCs - Troubleshooting Wireless Network and Internet (Windows 8) | HP® Customer SupportGood Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------Please click "Accept As Solution" on the post that solves your issue to help others find the solution. Please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on the left of the Reply button to say thanks fopr my help.========================================================================

I made a Google notebook to keep the minutes of a meeting my business partners and I held last weekend. I made them all collaborators on the notebook so they could all make any changes or annotations they felt necessary. However, when they go to access this notebook they are prompted for a password.

There is nowhere (at least that I can find) to even choose to password protect the notebook let alone change the password. I'm pretty confused as to what password the notebook could be. The only thing I can think of is that it's asking for the password to my gmail account, which I don't really want to be handing out. Any ideas on this one gang?

New here and so I hope that I am posting in the correct place.
My new notebook an M50-MX5 was in the warranty depot as we thought it had a dvd burning problem, however that was not the case; it was the media.

Anyway before it was sent into the toshiba warranty depot the level 2 tech phone support said to get the computer to be like it was when I unboxed it 2 days earlier, this was last month.
And so to my frustration all of my programs were removed, however before doing this the software techie at the office Ghosted it to my Western Digital Storage Unit and then sent it off to the Warranty Depot.

While it was in the shop I used my 3 yr old toshiba satellite 2410 which I am now typing on at this moment.
I was finally able to get the software tech from the office to reGhost my new toshiba M50 on this past Saturday and left it with him for a couple of hrs and then returned to pick it up as there was not much in the way of programs on it and so it wouldn't take long to Ghost the Images back.

Well, in my Western Digital Storage unit are Ghosts of this 3 year old satellite that I am presently using.
After the techie got my Restore Disk installed and tried to reGhost the image onto the New M50, it crashed.

He was using the wrong Ghost, he was using the one that was from this unit???
I was not happy, especially after he claimed that he now had it Ghosted with the proper Image and I tried it out and it was very sloooooow to Boot. He said it was my Norton 2006.

Something you might want to try (it's a pita) is a repair of windows - this may fix some of the slowness issues you're seeing. The install program he's talking about is probably the U3 component of many larger USB pen drives. I think it's on most of Sandisk's newer large drives. A repair of windows might also take care of this. I seriously doubt that putting the wrong image on the machine and then putting another image on could do any damage to the machine itself - the folks here at my job do it all the time.

My wife has a two-year-old Samsung notebook. Recently when she unplugged it the machine cut off, even though the battery said 79% charged (it wouldn't charge any further). I figured that the battery was bad so I bought another one from Amazon.

This one charges to 100% percent and does exactly the same thing. I'm perplexed but think there's something going on with the motherboard that won't let it use battery juice, even if Windows 8.1 says it's 100% charged.

I've tried the hold the power button down for 1 min with the battery out trick to no avail.

Any ideas? I'm stumped and think I might need to get her another notebook.

Thanks, Robert

There are always the same programs running, doing the same, but the Task Manager (show processes of all users activated) shows extremely different RAM sizes being used. About 2 to almost 4 RAM (I have 4 GB RAM). The system slows down extremely. When I add the used RAM in the Task Manager (the column in tab "Processes"), e.g. now I get an amount of about 1,5 and 2 GB used RAM, but in tab "Performance" is displayed about 3,6 GB used RAM. What does that mean? Might there be anything I could correct, e.g. free RAM or anything else?
And though often the same amount of used RAM is shown and there is (according the Task Manager) enough free CPU performance, sometimes the Notebook runs OK and sometimes runs slowly, so you cannot use it anymore.
I have tried some programs, which shall free (none used but occupied RAM), but they all do not work, cause problems, you have to restart the system.

I know that the general concensus, at least to a degree, is the more RAM, the better. But realisitically, what would the absolute least amount necessary be? I ask because I'm considering an all-in-one Dell which comes with 4 GB of RAM & no option to add more during the ordering process. Is 4 GB enough, considering I'm not going to be using any memory intensive programs?

A:Necessary amount of RAM

It's fine for most users.

I have 4 and rarely use more than 3.

Windows 7 will run tolerably well on 2--or even less.

A:Amount Of Ram

Hi, 256 is the min. to run XP. But it will also depend on what other programs you have running as well. I would recommend a min of 512 and an average of a gig. Once you start using photo and editing software you will need a lot more ram.
I have 3 computers and all have 2 gig of ram.

I have a 4gb of ram that runs windows 7 (64 bit) Dell laptop. Now my problem is that my Ram is being used up when i'm doing nothing. I noticed it a yesterday. So i disabled alot of start up programs and restarted my pc. And to see that about roughly 1.25 gb of ram was used after the boot. Nothing was running. I find this a lot of ram to be used up when nothing big is running. When i open google chrome (only have about 3 extensions running) and it would go up to about 1.45 - 1.75 gb of ram. Again nothing else is running just chrome. I ran a virus scan , a malware bytes scan and even a combofix scan. None of the scans found anything wrong.

I can't even seem to play my game. I get about 20 fps on it and drops to about 7. Before i would have around 45-60 fps. So i'm wondering why this is happening. Am i infected by a virus? This problem occured about maybe 2 days ago, i don't think i downloaded anything that would have done this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Unusual amount of Ram being used.Help please

This is absolutely normal. You are probably used to the old XP nums - but those days are over. Windows 7 does an excellent job managing RAM. Just let it do the job.

Disabling useless startups was a good move though.

Here is my Resource Monitor for comparison. I have only 1 IE tab (the forum) running.

Hi?

Anybody up for a challenge in writing a general boot up program that?s meets these few ideas.
Firstly to stuff ? Bill Gates ? hogging the amount of systems resources that one might have on ones PC, but most of all; one that can be downloaded and put onto a floppy disc or pen stick for the none computer savvy people like myself. It would be GR8 if it could work across the board on all platforms; I am on ? Windows ME ?

Limit the amount of memory available at start up
IE:
If you have 256MB or 512MB of Ram, fool the PC to leave just the absolute minimum amount memory needed to run Windows, then once windows is run free up the remaining RAM so as to leave more availed to do other things.

Any thoughts on whether this is possible or practicable?

A:Amount Of Available Memory

As far as I'm aware, the only way to restrict the memory pool prior to Windows booting would be to insert a process to allocate raw XMS memory in 386 Enhanced Mode, ie in a Virtual Machine, then remain as a stub after Windows booted to release the memory allocation later, if such a thing is technically feasible.

However even if it were technically feasible, the idea wouldn't have the desired effect. Windows dynamically allocates memory from the global pool, if more memory "became" available to the pool after Windows was operating it would not use it in any different way to memory that was present at startup.

Windows actually manages memory rather efficiently, the main FUD suggesting it is poor comes from software developers who would like you to think you need to buy their memory enhancers to "free up" memory. What you need to remember is that "free" memory is unused, ie it is not currently doing anything useful, and is therefore being wasted. If your system runs typically with 10% of the available memory free, then having 25% "free" is not going to help at all, in fact it means the other things that would otherwise be in memory ready to be used, now have to be loaded from the page file or the original file locations. Lying to Windows about the available memory at startup would have the same effect - system files like .DLLs would not be pre-loaded into memory ready for instant use, they would have to be loaded from the hard d... My MOBO will support 3 gig of PC333 or 2 gig of PC400. If I have more then a gig of ram, does this mean XP only will use 1 gig, or will you get the usage from the ram, but it just wont show in the device manager.

A:Full RAM amount not being seen

Hi
Although I am only a NEWBIE, a 32bit system will only take up to 4gig of RAM.

So your system will not recognise the full 6gig.
64bit systems will take more memory upgrade.
But please check, don;t take my word for it.

We were curious if there was any truth to what we are hearing about using more than 2 gigs of memory with XP. We were told that adding more than 2 gigs wouldn't really help that much, and might even hurt performance.

Can anyone explain why adding more memory would hurt performance? We always thought that adding more was better

Hey guys, I have a question wich I got no clue if it's possible

I want to play this beta game that asks 512ram minimum (they say they set the req amount for beta higher then what is actualy needed).
Thing is... for the download it check's if you actualy do have enough computer power.

Since I only got 236mb of ram, it will not let me download!

Was just wondering if ther was some kind of way to pretend I have 526 so It passes the system requirement test and let's me download!

A:Fake ram amount!

Borrow a stick of RAM, d/l the game and then give back the borrowed RAM. Mind you the game probably won't work properly so its not really a recommended course of action.
The more people who try the game the more it suits the program developers so they wouldn't put up unnecessary restraints.

I have 4gb RAM cards

I installed vista, no problem

Then i checked the P of My computer

it says I have 3329MB of RAM.

Does that mean Vista is using around 800mb of RAM? Is this normal?

A:[SOLVED] Amount of RAM used

this is normal because you have a 32 bit os

By crazijoe
4GB of memory installed but only 3GB is showing in Windows.
Does this sound familiar?

Many people have noticed that when they install large amounts of memory in their systems, that Windows will show much lower then the actual physical amount. This is basically a limit of the 32 bit OS. Example: you install 4GB of memory. The system BIOS will show 4 GB of memory but the Windows OS only shows 3.25GB of memory.

Windows XP 32 bit version will accept up to 4GB of memory. However Windows will reserve the address space 3.5GB to 4GB to hardware devices. If these devices need more memory, Windows will allocate more of it to accommodate it. It is rare but not uncommon to see a system with 4GB of memory installed and only 2.75GB that is usable. Another note PCI-E 16x usually will gobble up 256MB of the address space. So if you have an SLI configuration, the 2 PCI-E 16x cards will chew up 512MB on top of the other devices that need the address space. It is possible to tweak the BIOS to reduce the amount of memory these devices use but often the result is negligible.

This is a note taken from an Intel MB manual:
ftp://download.intel.com/support/mot.../sp2gp2tps.pdf

Note: Memory between 4GB and 4GB minus 512MB will not
be accessible for use by the operating system and may be lost
to the user, because this area is reserved for BIOS, APIC
configuration space, PCI adapter interface, and virtual video
memory space... Read more

Hello,

Haven't needed help from you guys in a while. I'm even using windows 8 now. Your advice was so good the last time.. I'm back.

Ok so I have a brand new kingston 4gb ram chip installed on my ecs p-45-t black series board. It replaced a 1gb chip. My other chips all say 1.8v this new one is 1.95.

According to my board manual, the board may only take 2gb chips, that contradicts its 16gb max capacity it boldly advertises. So I threw a dart. Now its telling me that I only have 7gb's one gigabyte more than before but I technically just added 3.

So far I have increased my memory voltage in the blue setup screen you get when pressing delete to 1.95 to see if it would fix this. It has not. I also just downloaded two bios files that I have not loaded.

I wait to hear from you again.

Thanks

A:Full amount of ram not available

Looks like the new chip is incompatible with the old ones.

It seems ddr2 667 and 800 are supported, 4 slots, up to 4 GB in all slots BUT only if the chips are identical (same manufacturer and specs) that would guarantee the full capacity and stability. Voltage would have to be the same for stability.

I looked here:
ECS Web Site > P45T-A (V1.0)
Is that the right motherboard?

You get 7GB instead of 9? Means you had 6GB initially

Sounds weird for RAM, usually jumping from 4GB to 6GB but to 8GB would be the best bet. Doubling capacity with each upgrade is ideal: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB...

I'm not an expert but when it comes to RAM, I never had issues: jumped from 2GB to 4GB and from 4GB to 8GB on different pc's.

The full size isn't always what you get from 6GB...
You should try and remove one chip of 2GB (one you think is the baddest in the setup) and remain with 4GB then insert the newer kingston of 4GB and you should get 8GB.

If that doesn't help, the voltage or frequencies incompatibilities still remain and you might get another identical kingston to replace the older (smaller) chips.

I know from upgrades that some older chips get (scarified) removed from the newer setup due to incompatibilities.

I hope you get some extra advice from others here and good luck in fixing this issue.

Cheers!

Well, I have a similar problem, I have installed vista with 2Gb of RAM in two 1024Mb PC2-5300 DIMM modules on my ASUS Commando motherboard. Worked ok. I purchased 2 more from a different manufacturer. The BOIS board registers the 4096Mb but when vista loads, it sees only 2Gb of RAM. Often this leads to a blue screen, it crashdumps but no solutions are available, obviously. So i mixed them around and it works fine for 1Gb of each make but vista will not recognise anything over 2Gb.

A:Cubase sx 3.0 very odd extraction amount

I think you misread the installation instructions. They advise to have a minimum partition size for Windows, when you start afresh. Does the installation come in a tar or tar.gz type of file? They have extreme compression.
If that is a downloaded iso, it probably includes someone else's projetc(s).

I have a desktop computer running Windows XP, SP2. It is used by my elderly mother a few times a week only for emails, youtube and occasional web browsing. I am usually around in case she encounters any difficulty, but do not use the computer myself other than to update windows, and scan for viruses.

After each session, I run SuperAntiSpyware and do a quick scan. Usually it comes up with nothing, or at most 1-3 tracking cookies. However, the last two times I have done it, there have been 75 adwares, many from porn sites. This amount is excessive and unusual, especially since none of these sites have been visited.

I did a malwarebytes scan, which found nothing, as well as a virus scan.

When I first ran a virus scan when I first got my computer, I had 100,000 files on it. Now when I run a virus scan, I have over 1,000,000 and it takes over 4 hours to complete a scan. Is it normal to have this many files? I don't add that many files, the only thing I add is music and I surely dont add that much.

Hey all,

Quick question for you all, does a 1Gb stick of ram @ 2,4,4,6 timings need a higher voltage level than a 256Mb stick also @ 2,4,4,6 timings ???

Cause im thinking of adding some additional ram to my system but I just need to make sure the new larger 2 x 1Gb sticks aren't going to need a higher voltage level than the current sticks I have in there now.
The new ram is the same speed (400Mhz) and brand (Corsair) as the current ram, it's also DDR SDRAM, and is a matched pair for dual channel use, just like the current ram I have in there already. It's just the size's that are different.

Cheers, Dayus

Hi all
Reading these threads a lot I get the impression that a great many people think that simply by adding more RAM on a computer will automatically improve the performance.

This is not necessarily true as there are many many factors that need to be taken into account.

The amount of REAL RAM allocated by the OS is based on very complex algorithims and not purely on the size of the application being run. For example I might have a HUGE powerpoint presentation (say 50 MB -- a lot for a powerpoint demo) but the actual REAL RAM needed is of the order of a few KB (yes Kilobytes).

Most applications (possibly Photoshop is one of the rare exceptions) do not need to be 100% loaded into RAM while working. Only the amount of real data "pages" need to be accessed at any one time. The amount will obviously dependon what the application is doing , other processes etc etc.

For example in the power point example as above the data has to be transferred to a Video display -- whilst this is being done the next "slice" of data can be read from the "paging" disk.

Applications which wait a lot on input from the User (such as word processing) can use actually a very small amount of RAM since the keyboard input is far far slower than any DISK I/O required to get data from paging into real RAM.

So before you go "buying huge amounts of RAM" think what you actually need.

For a lot of people better graphics, faster CPU and above all FASTER DISKS... Read more

A:More RAM doesn't always amount to better performance

This is false... The amount of VMemory allocated to each program is 4 gigs on a 32 bit system. The amount actually in the RAM can be super small yes. Yes the Disk is possibly the biggest bottleneck, but your title makes it seem like more ram can be worse, where in all reality it won't ever hurt. If you have a crappy hard disk, disable your page file, buy 4 gigs of ram and run completely off ram, this will stop page faults (swapping of memory to the hard drive and vice versa) which is a huge performance gainer...

When it comes to games, Graphics cards are your bigger bottleneck, due to the fact that most of your textures etc are loaded into memory. And if you only have a little RAM then your OS is going to be forced to swap memory in and out of the page file, which will really kill you if you have a crappy hard drive, but if you are playing Crysis, more ram and a kick a video card are a way bigger factor than a fast or slow hard drive.

If you aren't a gamer and your machine sucks, get a core 2 duo or better, with a decent hard drive and a ton of RAM :P

And, it's easier to upgrade ram than say a CPU, also generally more cost effective, but unless you are someone who does some major video editing you probably won't get any performance boost above 2-4 gigs.

I recently installed 2 x 1GB DDR2 DIMM's on an Asus WS64 Quartet server board, 975X chipset, Conroe 6600 CPU. I am not tweaking or overclocking this memory. I also have 1 GB total of meory on the video cards in the system. This should have me below the 4GB limit.

Dumb question, but here goes: If I right-click on My Computer and choose "Properties" it says I only have 1.37GB of RAM installed. All other info, such as CPU speed, is correct. If I look at CPU-Z utility, it says I have 2048MB installed, which is, again, what I installed.

Is WinXP Pro not recognizing something? My BIOS post screen also correctly shows 2048MB installed as dual channel, interleaved, etc. Why is it just WinXP Pro showing a lower number? Is there something wrong with my system? Is some memory not available for access? Needless to say, I am not using integrated graphics, so I assume memory is not being stolen for an integrated controller.

Thanks for any info/help.

I know initially it'll run on a couple of gigs but, I also know after updates, antivirus, and firewall downloads and updates after some time the memory gets consumed and the computer gets really slow. My daughter got a laptop for her birthday and it came with 2 gigs of RAM, a dual core intel processor and windows 7. Shouldn't this thing have at least 4 gigs of RAM to allow for all the updates and the antivirus and firewall software and it's future updates, or does it really need more? You know it's cheaper to get it already installed than to add it later.
Thanks!

I will try to keep this short and simple. I got a call from my isp Comcast that my computer is using an insane amount of Bandwidth a Month. In the last 3 months I averaged about 1 terabyte of BW a month. I dont know how that is possible. My wireless router is using WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] security option with a very random pass phrase that is not likely to be compromised. Comcast told me that for the next 6 months if I go over 250g of BW a month they will be forced to ban my service for an entire year. I cant let that happen so now I am freaking out. I dont usually download a lot of stuff. The only thing I can think of is using Pandora radio a Lot and Playing world of Warcraft for few hours a day. That shouldnt be the cause for such extreme bandwidth usage. I tried scanning my pc using malwarebytes and found nothing, I try to stay on top of my security updates and maintain my pc as clean as i know how. Any ideas or help would be most appreciated. Please help me figure this out and I will do what ever I can to return the favor. Its only the 11th and I already used up 75% of my BW. I am really worried that my computer is being used by someone (or something) which is causing this issue because I simply cant comprehend using this much BW on my own. Here is a shot of my recent bandwidth usageTy in advance, you guys are pretty much my last resort.

I just purchased a new motherboard/processor. I brought over my old RAM, GPU, SSD/HDD/Case. I did a fresh install, formatted/installed Windows 7. I had a few programs causing BSOD's after about 30-45 minutes of a reboot/power on, that I was able to troubleshoot(Speccy + antivirus)

I cleared it up, no BSOD's after initial 5-10 hours of up time. I went to bed, I woke up, I saw that I was crashed. My computer would reset and then just hard lock up at loading screen. If I power cycle and turned back on, it boots up with no issues. I check the event log in Computer/Manage - it pointed to a ram issue. I took each stick and ran memplus86 on it for about 5-6 passes each, no errors. I purchased a single 4gb stick to test as well.

I tried leaving my CPU with just the new single stick, same thing, BSOD after about 24 hours.

I decided to come here, I have a new symptom now, though. I have a little bit of distorted sound for the split second of the sound starting. Example, the windows "ding" sound it makes or the bootup windows sound, it's distorted and static-y for the first half a second or so.

Also, when I was creating folders/renaming them on desktop for your SF_diag tool, I had to right click- refresh to see the changes.

Do I have a 3.0 GB or a 300 GB hard drive? I was wondering because I just orderd a Western Digital 500GB external HD for backing up pics and music. Does that mean 500GB or 5.0 GB. Just a little confused..
Thanks in advance.

A:Confusion RE Amount of Memory On MY PC

Okay.. Easy answer thats confusing here...... You have both.

You have a SATA II, 300Gig hard drive.

300 Gigibytes is the size OF THE DRIVE, and it transfers at a SATA II speed of 3.0Gbytes/sec

300 Gigabytes = 286 Gigabits... it's due to the convrsion of 1 unit to the other.

I recently took delivery of a new computer with Vista Home installed. Didn't care for it and some of my old programs were not supported by it. I bought and installed XP Pro and I have 4 gigs of RAM yet the OS only shows 2.75 on the systems page. All the other computers I've owned always showed the correct amount including this one when the Vista was installed. Did I mess up something here? Can this be fixed to show the correct amount of RAM installed? Thanks.

Gregg

A:XP Pro not showing correct amount of ram

Does that amount of RAM show up when it POSTs? It might the the MoBo that isn't recognizing it properly. Memory addressing in earlier versions of Windows may not show that amount, but can still use that memory. Make sure you have Service Pack 3 installed from Microsoft Windows Update. According to the list of fixes of SP3, it shows that the INI file for the Addressing.Go to start, then click Run. In the field enter msinfo32 and it should pop up with info. The info should say around 4096 MB RAM. It clearly recognizes the amount.Microsoft Support Article

I have rainmeter installed so that I can always monitor what CPU % is being used and what amount of RAM is being used at all times. Usually my computer runs at 1% CPU and 6% RAM when idle. Recently it has been jumping to 32-41% of ram when idle. I honestly don't know what to do and need help to see how we can fix it, if there is indeed a fix. This happens as soon as the computer turns on and never goes away. Noticed it when playing Starcraft 2, it started running a bit slower which prompted me to check my ram usage. I found that it was unusual and started looking for help. Thanks in advance,A very concerned individualHere is the DDSDDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSX64 Run by Diego at 18:44:39.27 on Sun 09/12/2010Internet Explorer: 8.0.7600.16385 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_21Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 6.1.7600.0.1252.1.1033.18.4085.2254 [GMT -4:00]============== Running Processes ===============C:\Windows\system32\wininit.exeC:\Windows\system32\lsm.exeC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k DcomLaunchC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k RPCSSc:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Essentials\MsMpEng.exeC:\Windows\system32\atiesrxx.exeC:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNetworkRestrictedC:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalSystemNetworkRestrictedC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcsC:\Windows\System32\DriverStore ... Hi,
Pertinent Info:
Windows 7 HP x64
16 GB RAM installed
1 TB HDD / 4 Partitions (1 Primary + 3 Logical - Extended)
Avast Free Anti-virus

I hope I've posted this to the correct forum.

My C-drive is located on a 204 GB partition but I have less than 90.0 GB of available space. Yet, all folders & their subfolders in root directory (excluding hidden system files, I'm assuming) total around 53.1 GB.
After running WinDirStat, I see that pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys, winsxs, & an "Unknown" file (System Restore?) are taking up large amounts of space.

I wanted to know the following:
1) Is it recommended to disable/delete Hibernation since I'm on a desktop? And why do I even have a hiberfil.sys file? It's not a Shut Down option, only Sleep is listed, and I have 16 GB RAM.
2) Can I shrink the pagefile (safely) w/o experiencing performance issues? Or relocate the file to the next closest partition?
3) What is the recommended percentage of disk space for SystemRestore points? BTW, I only have it configured to make ShadowCopies of C, not any of the other partitions.

Thank you.

A:OS using large amount of C-Drive & I don't know why

Hi SoNotAGeek You're right that on a desktop, hibernation isn't really useful, except if you want to save some electricity. Personally, I disabled it on mine and I never had an issue with it. And so does all the desktop computers at my workplace. If you disable it, it should solve the hiberfil.sys problem by removing it. Here's a good tutorial from SevenForums showing you how to disable Hibernation mode under Windows 7:http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/819-hibernate-enable-disable.htmlYou can safely shrink the pagefile.sys file without expericing performance issues. If you are to use your full 16GB of RAM, then it's either by mistake (not intended) or on purpose for a very specific task and that task shouldn't really on the pagefile.sys file to maintain the rest of the processes. Here's an article on HowToGeek showing you how to shrink the pagefile.sys file:http://www.howtogeek.com/126430/htg-explains-what-is-the-windows-page-file-and-should-you-disable-it/You can decide to disable it (if you read the whole article and decide to do so), or simply manage it manually and set the sizes yourself. Also, the recommended amount of disk usage for the System Restore can depend on the size of your hard drive and how often you need it. I would suggest you to always keep between 5-10 Restore Points and once it exceed that point, to flush the older ones. Reason is that restore points can easily become corrupted, therefore unusable and keeping only a few of them, but good ones, makes it ... Read more

Hi what is the max amount of RAM that Vista 32 bit will recognize?

I ask this because I have 3 gigs of RAM currently on my 32 bit computer and I want to go buy some more. I found a good stick for under 20 dollars that I don't mind spending on.

If I make my RAM go from 3 gigs to 4 gigs, will it recognize the extra gig? I heard that it will not recognize 4 gigs but I also heard that it won't recognize anything more than 4 gigs.

Thanks.

A:Max amount of RAM for Vista 32bit?

How big is your graphics card? That is included in the amount of memory your OS will be able to address.

Hello.

What is the "safe" amount of space to have left on your operating hard drive for an XP machine?

I think it is calculated by percentage of total disk space rather than an actual size?

Thanks,
The Panda

A:Amount Of Disk Space

I believe that 25% would be the minumum...XP needs a little space for swapping during operation in order to run smoothly.

Hello,
I just added 2bg of RAM to my Dell Inspiron 1501 (32bit OS). I replaced one of the original 512mb cards. Under properties in my computer it shows 2.5 gb like it should. However, I noticed the computer works at the same speed as it did before. I checked task manager and it shows I still have 894mb. I also ran msconfig and the maximum amount I can set is still 896mb. (I attatched a picture for more details.)
Thanks in advance for help. I highly anticipate a faster machine.

hey everyone!

i just need to check something with you all: when the bios show a memory amount such as 256mb, could windows show it as being 512mb or does windows get the memory amount from the bios?

thanks

A:bios memory amount

Is this a hypothetical question, or are you actually seeing a specific result?

I personally would expect the opposite, if anything...less found in Windows, than elsewhere.

A:unbootable volume amount

Hey,

I believe you have your words mixed, maybe it's unmountable boot volume? Anyway, question, I'm not quite understanding you, is this the main hard drive on the computer that has the operating system on it or is it just another hard drive you have? At any rate, if it's the main hard drive with the OS on it, boot into recovery console with your XP disc. Type "chkdsk /p" and after that is done type in "fixboot". Do both of those commands without the quotation marks. Try rebooting and you should be able to boot into Windows. If that does not work, reboot into the recovery console again and use the command "chkdsk /r". Reboot and attempt to get back into Windows.

Regards,

Brandon

When I first got my computer, and ran a virus scan it showed that it had scanned 100,000 files. Now when I run a virus scan (a year later) it shows that it has scanned over 1,000,000, and it takes 4 hours to complete a scan. I was just wondering if this was normal? I don't add that many files, and if i do it's music, and I surely don't had THAT many.

A:Overwhelming amount of files.

you get more files added over time. every time you install a program, like say, microsoft office, you dont just install one file-it will install dozens of different files that all need to be there for that program to work. music and pictures will be just one file, but youd be surprised how much that adds up, like you type a paper and save it, download a pic, etc. etc. and then there are cookies your web browser downloads without your knowledge every time you visit a new site, each cookie is a new file, and yes you get malware and spyware over time without your knowledge, even if you did a scan and deleted it, more will appear over a period of a few months of casual web surfing. You need to scan for spyware and malware on a regular basis. but as for as 1,000,000 files that kind of a jump, it may be from the things I mentioned, but on the other hand it could be a virus that your normal scanner isnt catching. Im assuming its up to date, but no single anti virus scanner can find everything, you might try using different scanners. ones that I like to use are AVG or MCAFREE does a free online scan that I use a lot. Im sure theres better ones out there.

i recently began playing the MMO black desert online, i noticed that 98% of my 8 gigabytes of ram would get gobbled up, the game locks in around 4-5 gigs, and then DLLHost.exe eats up what ever else is available.

if i end process on DLLHost.exe, it has no immediate effect on the game, but around five minutes later the game crashes to desktop, with no error message of any kind, basically the process just ends abruptly

i stumbled across a person with a very similar problem, SOLVED - COM Surrogate problem and dllhost.exe overload
the only difference is in my case the dllhost.exe does not copy itself, i only have one dllhost.exe that is using a massive amount of ram.

Hello,

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.

It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

I would like to start out saying that i do have a basic knowledge of computers and am pretty decent at troubleshooting.. that being said i have some pretty bad luck with computers...

It all started when i F!%@ed my HP laptop with spyware malware and the basic annoying/dangerous programs and to help me i installed hijack-this and it worked great until i accidentally targetted my AV program (norton). this caused norton to block anything new or updated and was generally annoying and the only solution i found was to reformat

I couldnt reformat it using my XP CD because it was an earlier version than the manufacturer had installed and i couldnt update on startup because it couldnt read my hard disk drive (according to google searches its because i didnt have a raid or SCSI driver) so i opted to use my friends CD and install it on safe mode to bypass norton which also worked fine... however his CD is XP 2007 and to use it you have to activate it using a unique code which comes from the cd key, which is teh same as my friends which means i cant enter windows and i cant reinstall on startup because as ive said i apparently done have the drivers

this means that i cant reinstall my version of XP meaning that i cant use windows meaning i cant use my laptop which is currently collecting dust... i tried a whole bunch of methods and all i found out is that the internet is full of jerks and microsoft tech support is [email protected]#ING useless... hell i knew more than her... anyway helpwould b... Hey guys,

When checking my RAM Usage I notice a High Amount of RAM Chached ... Is this Normal if not how can I lower this?

Many Thanks,

That is normal.
Windows 7 is anticipating what applications you may need.
All that RAM will be available if the system calls for it.
Why do you want to lower it?

To find out which type of, and the maximum allowed RAM for your system try the crucial memory scanner... http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/

You can purchase RAM from Ebuyer.com amongst others if you are in the UK, or I think a popular US site is Newegg.com

Hello,
Recently my PC has been constantly pumping out data, probably to the web. I believe this because every time I turn on my computer the bandwidth goes down to 0.4Mbps compared to a usual 16Mbps... I've tested with other PCs on the network. I believe it's a virus... I've tried running an avast! boot time scan, Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10, Adware cleaner, TDSS Killer to no avail. Please help.
Also, what log should I be posting?
Thanks a lot,
