Flickering screen at startup - then black screen when I enter password

Q: Flickering screen at startup - then black screen when I enter password

Hi there,

I developed a problem with my desktop pc yesterday. I was gaming and the screen began to flicker then the game crashed - citing "rendering device lost". I tried to re-load this again and the same thing happened again, this time with a BSOD. I tried a different game and the same thing occured, took slightly longer though. Given it was late I went to bed.

Today on loading up the sign in screen was flickering lots, I entered my password and was met by a black screen. The computer continued to make fan noises as if it was working, but nothing on my screen. This happened again. On restaring my computer the crash report read

"Blue Screen.
locale ID 2057
BCcode 1a
BCP1 0000000000005001
BCP2 FFFFF7009080000
BCP3 00000000000009ED
BCP4 B00000000

I've looked at the bug dump, but I was silly and did a system restore before this, so there's no bug dump.

The computer starts and runs fine in safe mode and without the graphics card in.

Since I've done a system restore
Cleaned everything again ( was pretty dust free to start)
Uninstalled and re-installed the graphics card drivers
Re-seated RAM and GPU
Done a memory diagnostic on my RAM
None of these have worked.
I've taken the graphics card out and it runs fine with the onboard GPU.

Some specs:
Intel I5 3570K
GPU - AMD Radeon HD 7870
Corsair Vengeance 8GB RAM
Motherboard: Asus P8Z77M pro
PSU -OCZ Core steam 500W

The pc has worked perfectly for 3-4 years with no issues with games previously. Real Temp GT clocks the GPU temp at 50-60 under load, similiar for CPU.

Do you need any more info to help diagnostically?

Is this all down to my GPU? Does anyone have any suggestions for a fix?

One of my PCs suddenly developed a habit to black out
the screen at login time right after I click owner, put password and Enter.

It was working fine before this, I do not connect it to Internet, yet I transfer some files
using USB memory stick from other PC which is connected.

Interestin thing that when I chose F8 for safe mode the PC that generates garbage bag black
screen works fine as far as I can tell. I can see my files in directories and open them
(clearly I checked only a few).

Is it a virus or I changed some setting during last log out ?
Thank you.

A:Screen Gets Black After Enter On Owner Password

There are several things that could cause this, the most likely being a corruption of your video drivers. To start with, uninstall the current video drivers from your system while in Safe Mode (go to Control Panel...Add/Remove Programs).

If this doesn't fix it, post back and we'll go through the steps for checking out your hard drive, your file system, and the MBR/Boot sectors of the hard drive.

So here's how it all went down...
This morning when I open the device manager, I saw that the display adapter, Intel HD Graphics 4000 had a yellow exclamation mark on it. When I clicked it, it saids Window had stopped the device from working(code 43). I fixed this problem yesterday with no trouble. I knew the cause of it because I was installing third party themes and somehow the display adapter got the yellow exclamation point.

But this morning was different, I decided to restart my computer when I see the yellow exclamation point thinking it would go away. Oh, I was so wrong. When I restarted, the computer boots up with "Lenovo" and the loading symbol. Then a black screen appears for about a minute then the mouse appears. After a few minutes, a grey screen started flickering everyone 3 seconds or so. When I try to move the mouse, it moves and went back to the center every time the grey screen flickers. I'm fairly positive that this is only the display adapter problems and every other hardwares are working fine and their drivers are up to date. I've search the internet but no problems was like mine, only black screen. The closest I found was graphic card getting uninstalled accidentally.

I've tried going to safe mode with F8 but Window 10 is a nutjob and I can't get anywhere. All there is on the monitor is black screen, then grey flickers. I tried my best to stay calm when fixing the problems, but I'm slowly going to panic mode.

Hey guys,

I tried booting up my PC which has Windows 8 installed and it was working fine until yesterday.

It has a "Enter Password" screen upon start-up and I think it's a virus because it only lets me enter 10 characters and even though, I do put in the correct password, it still says it's incorrect. The computer also shuts down after 3 unsuccessful attempts.

I have attached a picture of the screen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello there

So I'm experiencing strange BitLocker behaviour. I have this PC at work. Clean Windows 8 x64 installation, 3 HDD (AHCI), no SSD.

After I set up BitLocker to encrypt "C" partition, it gave me pop-up window, that I should restart PC to test the BitLocker loader. So I clicked Yes. And after few seconds I got this:

Mind, I'm still ABLE TO type password (i can't see sh** though), after I hit enter Windows IS booting, but it's really weird to see above picture instead of:

(at my home PC).

My GFX is OK, I tested it with games, benchmarks etc.

Any thoughts people?

Kind Regards

Okay, I completed an update for my fingerprint scanner about two days ago and didn't restart my computer right away. I restarted my computer today and it asked me to verify my password, unnfortunately I totally forgot it. After trying many many times with no luck I decided to undo the update by going back to the time before I updated. When I restarted my computer again, my log in screen was flashing, I couldn't do ANYTHING on my computer, so I restarted it.....still nothing. I got so frustrated that I just shut down my computer or a few hours, when I got back on my computer would not boot up at all. I have a black screen, PLEEEEEEEEASE HEEEEEEEELP!!!!!

I have an Acer Travelmate 2480, equipped with Windows Vista Home edition by default, and it's great.

HEre are my specs:

Mainboard : Acer, Inc. Prespa1
Chipset : Intel i943/940GML
Processor : Celeron M 420 @ 1600 MHz
Physical Memory : 1024 MB (2 x 512 DDR2-SDRAM )
Video Card : Intel Corporation Mobile Integrated Graphics Controller

(Thanks to PC Wizard)

Now, I don't know why, but my screen goes black randomly. completely not effecting anything, not lasting more than a couple of seconds, but nothing serious happens. The only time I know it happens is when I'm playing Second Life and it crashes. My screen goes black for longer, and then when it comes back up, the program is gone and drivers crashed but were successfully restarted. To my knowledge, this doesn't happen any other time my screen goes black.

Thank you.

Here is a 10 second video showing the issue im talking about.

I am not to sure how to start to tackle this.
Its only started to happen in the last week.
I thought maybe temp etc but ive removed both side my tower to allow a greater air flow & its clean with no dust clogging the fan etc but still the same.

It doesnt do it all the time but will do it every day.
Any advice would be great.

Many thanks

A:Flickering Black Screen

What is REALLY odd is the task bar at the bottom and menu bars at the top of the screen do not black out.

That tends to rule out hardware (and thus heat) or graphics driver related issues.

Have you scanned for malware? Does it only do it with your browser or every where else too?

having more than a fair share of problems with this new PC. My old HP is 8 years old, and is still running, so I was hoping for another good machine . Instead I got 1) black screen on first boot, got thru this by finding the tutorial on HP's site about pulling the plug, waiting 5 minutes, etc. 2) now, in the morning on a cold start after boot,  I'm getting a Black screen that lasts 2 or 3 seconds. It cycles thru this 4 or 5 times, then stops for 10 minute, then does it again.  eventually goes away, after 1/2 hour,  but I'm not paying 800 bucks for this. (monitor is an HP 2511x,  does not do this with any other PC.)

Today I uninstalled MS Office 2010. After doing this it informed me I had to restart Windows 8 for all changes to take affect which I did. Ever since I have not been able to get into Windows 8.

Essentially I turn on the PC, I see the HP logo, and then Windows 8 goes in an endless black flickering screen loop. I have closed the laptop and pulled the battery to see if that was the issue, but it was not. Considering it was running normally before hardware wise I believe something went wrong with Win 8.

Is there any known fix for this? I lack a Win 8 disc and lack a USB DVD drive regardless (laptop does not have an internal drive) and reinstalling Windows is out of the question as I have data I need on it.

A:Black flickering screen upon boot

Without a DVD Drive or even a Flash Drive to use, the only option you have is the Recovery Partition.

You could TRY logging in to Safe Mode, if you can get into Safe Mode you can run Bootrec /fixmbr and then /Scanos.

Read this Tutorial and try some of the ways to get into Safe Mode:

Advanced "Startup Settings" - Boot to in Windows 8

If you are successful getting into Safe Mode, type Windows Key+X and choose "Administrator Command Prompt". IN trhe Command Prompt run Bootrec /fixmbr and then Bootrec /Scanos.

And you may want to run an SFC /Scannow while you ar ein there, do it a few times.

The only other option you would have is to use your Recovery Partition, which WILL delete any important Data you need, as will a Windows Reset or Refresh as well.

If you can get a Windows 8 Installer on a Flash Drive, you could invoke a System Restore from it.

The Link I posted may show how to do a System Restore while the main OS is fouled up.

Also, you can search the Internet for a WinRE or WinPE ISO file, which you could convert to a Flash Drive using ISO2Disc. So if you don't have a flash drive, go out and get one that is at least 10 GB.

That periodical 5 - 30 seconds black flickering screen has tormented me on my Y2P ever since I upgraded to Windows 10. Just today in a Yoga 2 Pro tips discussion I read that the solution may be to disable Panel Self-Refresh in the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel (Power -> On Battery). Too soon for me to tell if it works but I have my fingers crossed.

Emachine windows 7 upgraded from 7 to 8 to 8.1 to 10 pro. Had black flicker screen problem with the windows 10 pro previously. And had other issues as well with signing in to my microsoft games on my pc.
So to fix the micrsoft pc games problem I removed everything from my pc and even deleted the previous windows so now there's only windows 10 pro on my pc.

So now I can sign in to my microsft games like bingo and so forth.

So now I'm having a problem with the black flickering screen which I don't know how to fix.
I'm current on my updates.

And here's the problem with the screen.

If I click on the windows icon on the taskbar and then open the "File Explorer" and then click to open a file like a video. And the vlc media player opens it will flicker once or twice. Or if I'm using the firefox browser and watching a video on netflix it will flicker a few times like maybe a dozen or so.

Youtube videos don't flicker and its getting me a bit buggy.

I'm loooking for a few ideas on how to fix it. My screen dose not turn black it just flickers once the players start.

But I didn't have the problem with the previous windows.

Please help me out with this. Thank you.

I have been having this problem for 6 months now and it's making me go insane. The problem is while im playing ingame my screen will go completely black all i can see are faint outlines of things then it will flicker back to normal then back to completely black again. This will go on for 15 minutes or so before it finally stops and it was happening once a day. Since then things have gotten worse, alot worse, Now when it goes black it will not even flicker back to normal it will stay completely black for about an hour or more or until i quit the game. It's so frustrating because I can forget about grouping or raiding at all because well, if the screen goes black im SOL. This is happening in WoW, EQ2 and WC3. I'm at the end of my pitiful rope please get me some help, if you can't help refer me to more tech forums where i can post my problem.

Stuff you might wanna know: I have the latest drivers for my video card (NVidia 6600 GT)I have the latest version of Directx(9.0c)I don't believe there is any overheating going on as i have a box fan on high sitting infront of the open case and there is an air condition directly behind the fan. Also don't think it has anything to do with sound as I've disabled sound in all those programs and the problem still persists. This is all I can think of right now. Thank you for your time.

A:y50-70 Flickering Horizontal Lines & Black Screen

Hi Amrradwan ,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
Since the issue would be intermittent , next time that it would happen to best take a picture of the image and likewise try to connect it with an external monitor to check if the same issue would appear.
I would stilll recommend that you call in this issue for documentation purpose and further reference in the future , You may consult tech support for an action plan for this event .

I upgraded my pc yesterday and reinstalled Windows 7. Now on the starting Windows screen I have a little underscore blinking in the top left corner of the screen.

Is it something to be worried about? What could it be?

A:Flickering underscore on startup screen

I think that is actually normal.

I've had numerous windows based PCs and every one of them has this just after the BIOS post screen. If it blinks a few times it is nothing to be worried about. My only guess as to the reason is that if you are a technician you can access DOS at that prompt before the PC boots into windows.

Hey guys, usually pretty self sufficient when it comes to hardware issues but i have no experience with monitors going awry and seek some advice.

The issues a relatively simple one, when first starting the computer there is a problem with the monitor getting power, the power light stays off and the screen, completely black flickers making a clicking noise gaining a very slight gain in brightness all the while the power light staying off.

After unplugging from the power, and disconnecting the vga connection a couple of times eventually the power light comes on and the screen works.

During use there are no issues with the picture and it works fine, it is only when the computer has been shut down and the screen off for a period of time i have this issue getting it back on.

Any help as to what it is appreciated i suspect it has come to the end of it's life as it is almost 3 years old now.

The monitor in question is a GNR, showing as a plug and play on devices and running of a gforce 8500 gt.

Thanks in advance

This has never happened before. I went on vacation last week and figured i would turn my computer off to save power. So i did. When i came back and turned on my computer after a week, i saw these slanted black bars with little stripes of the screen through them, they were flickering very fast. I got to the setup screen where all the information for the computer is at (Bios, Ram, CPU speed, etc.) and it stopped. I go back into windows and it started again right when i get to the windows loading screen with the blue bar and windows icon. After about 5 to 10 minutes it wears off for some reason but every time i turn my monitor off, or it goes to power save mode and i turn it back on, they are there again for another 5 minutes. What is this and how can i fix it?

by the way, these stripes re appear when i go into certain games or a website with a dark backround, they dont show up with Call of Duty 4 but they do with Overlord. In Overlord they will go away when i look up at a bright sky but re appear when i go into a dark area... its so annoying, i cant play with them there...

What do you have LCD ? If so, turn off pc, turn off monitor for 30 minutes. Then give her another try.. GL,,

SORRY--I ORIGINALLY TITLED THIS AS AN HP 35. That was two computers ago, this one is a 15. HP Notebook - 15-f111dx (ENERGY STAR) Not sure this is where it belongs. The first 50 results of what I thought was a narrow Google search had nothing matching this, and a lot of lockup after password results. While working on the computer, including actively typing, the screen will "blink" black for at least a full second, then come back to wherever I was before. Then a few seconds later, it blinks again and the password screen appears. The machine is well-ventilated and it not doing any processor-intensive gaming stuff. It is similar to a screensaver re-login. Pressing enter after the password returns me to the same place almost instantly. This has continued even after I have done at least two each, virus scan (Avast), malware scan (Malware Bytes), and spyware scan (SuperAntiSpyware). There's also plente of gigs of space left on the hard drive, 8 gigs of RAM, and Task Manager says there's still unused memory and the processor is somewhere less than 80% occupied. So what gives???? Thanks!

I have been having this problem since a week or so. Broni has helped me in malware forum to rule out malware as responsible. My machine is clean and I was refered here for further help.

Here is my problem:

At boot-time, I see windows XP load screen with the progress bar, the progress bar advances to the end and then, the screen turns pitch black and all is see is an arrow cursor I can move around. I thought until yesterday that this was a permanent freeze-up, but if I wait, say, 6 minutes, the black screen disappears and windows then starts normally.

Last week, problem was intermittent, it now happens all the time.

Windows boot-up was fine before.

Please help me.

A:Windows load screen at boot, looong black screen, then normal startup

I had this tons of times with my old XP PC. It is normal if you have a lot of files on the HDD and you have little RAM. How much RAM do you have? What is the capacity of the HDD? And do you have the Windows XP disc? Would you be willing to upgrade the RAM and/or the OS if we must resort to that? Or would you rather just buy a new PC?

Just today, I turned on my computer and got the blue screen of death, so I restarted my PC. Then a black screen came up saying "Windows could not start beacuse the following file is missing or corrupt : \windows\system32\config\system."

You can attempt to repair this file by putting the winxp cd in etc...

Now when i turn on my computer there is just a black screen showing, with nothing at all on it.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks very much for your help.

Hi all,

Starting yesterday my computer would go through startup... while loading the desktop it would crash to blue screen with white text (unfortunately, I can't remember the exact error message). If restarted, it either goes to a blank black screen or back to blue, and I could only get the computer to operate in safe mode with networking. My antivirus software (avast free, malwarebytes)scanned and found no infections.

I have Windows 7, Samsung laptop.

Today, I was able to start the computer normally and am functioning with internet (still acting a little funny), but I am sure something is still not right. I also did a system restore last night, with the same problems (crashing, not starting up).

Any assistance would be highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

PS: I (goofily) started a similar topic in the "Windows 7" forum section without knowing this section was down here... Sorry! I tried to delete the topic/post but couldn't. Thanks.

Hi, thanks for checking my question. I haven't found an answer to my particular situation:

Dell xps m1430 laptop w/vista (32).

It all started with a blue screen w/scrolling text after the fated restart. The blue screen text said "if this is the first time you've seen this message..." and then comp restarted, again showing the blue screen, then restarted into windows repair mode, after repair mode tried to fix the problem comp restarted, then the screen went black / blank right after the little windows loading animation (where the bar keeps moving from left to right and there's a small windows logo).
It all happened fast, so there may have been steps I forgot, but that's the jist of it.

Now screen always goes black / blank during startup after the windows loading animation, so I can't start windows in normal mode.
I can start in safe mode if I manually force shutdown by holding the power button, so I'm not imploding with fear... ok I am.

Possible causes:
1. This occured right after installing 11 vista updates (that restart was when I saw the blue screen)

2. Also occured the restart after running a patch called "Vista TCP/IP and UAC AutoPatch 6.0" I downloaded it from softpedia, the developer was listed as defcon, and their website listed was, but the site is down(I found this out after the problem occured). The patch had lots of positive reviews, and lots of people on other sites also suggest using it to re... Read more

Hello everybody, today my laptop has become blind. Let me explain:

My laptop was purchased in 2007
Alienware m9750
Dual nvidia 7950 go
Dual core 2.0
2 gigs of ram
80 gb harddrive

So here's what happened, today I was watch s movie on netflix when suddenly my screen goes black. Though I had crashed but my laptop was still on and the sound was still going. restarted, and the initial screen was slightly pixellated and garbled. Which has now made my laptop permanent garbled and pixely. After the windows logo. My screen goes black, but I am still hear the windows start up sound. I found that I am able to click on some music files on my desktop that are able to play, so this is a video issue. I reboot in safe mode which works this time figure to disable and uninstall the videocard drivers. I restart and I'm able to use my pc somewhat normally( still garbled). Reinstalled the nvidia drivers then halfway through says: error install failed or something, it happen really fast then crashed, tried restarting atleast 20 times in safe mode but it freezes up after it tries to load partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

All of the other options for start up(even last settings to work) the screen goes black after the windows logo. I have tried tinkering with the bios but it doesn't help. Its basically being blind using a computer. So I'm wondering if there is anyway to possibly blindly open up command prompt and possibly disable or uninstall the drivers from there, I'm ab... Ok 116 error is caused by your Graphics card.
First thing to do is update your drivers from the NVIDIA website.

If BSODs continue Try HDD tests,
download gpu-z to check if your card is getting too hot, also is there lots of dust in the card?

Do you overclock your video card?

Before explaining how i got here, i will explain what exactly is happening. When I boot up my computer i see the logo then text saying Preparing Automatic Repair with a loading icon. Then i would get a black screen that would sometimes show a cursor that i can use with the black screen but most times just the black screen. Eventually this black screen ca give way to Diagnosing your PC loading screen that loops endlessly

Okay this started after I downloaded the anniversary edition for Windows 10, the first time i booted up the computer i had faced the AVG Watchdog initialization bug which prevented from accessing the laptop for the few weeks as tried looking for solutions forcing me to eventually uninstall AVG through Safe mode (the only way i managed to was through turning it off and on 3 times as every other way including holding F8 had not worked). After booting up the first time without issue after removing AVG and getting some things done, I turned it off without issue then i faced this new problem which is still plaguing me. I've looked up in forums for a solution but the closest i found was just reinstalling windows and losing everything, does anyone have a solution where i can still keep my data?

A:Can't access startup screen, boot up leads to black screen

Hi Helix935 and welcome to Tenforums.

If it was less than 10 days since this happened, you might have been able to go into Settings>Recovery and rollback from the Anniversary Update. But it's been too long now.

If it's data only that you're needing to save, you could boot the system to Kyhi's rescue media and use File Explorer to copy your data over to an external drive, then perform a clean install, (or reset or refresh from within safe mode).
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - Windows 10 Forums
You will need to reinstall your personal applications after the OS is working again though.

Hi everyone,
I have a HP Pavilion P6-2004nl with Windows 10 running on it.
A couple of days ago i started up my computer, after a long loading screen it gave me a "Corrupted file" message.
Restarted and i never came further than a black screen after the BIOS with a flickering underscore.
I have two HDD's:
Samsung SSD 120GB (Probably windows 10 is installed on this drive, because when i only plug this one it gives the flickering underscore)
SATA HDD 2GB (Gives me a no bootable device found message when i only plug this in)
Anyhow on both harddisks my bootable USB with the windows 10 files installed on it wont boot. And in the bios it shows my Sandisk USB in the plugged drives but not in the boot-menu.
I have Aptio 2.11.1210 BIOS with superlimited options and i have no idea how to boot the windows install disk from my BIOS.

I just bought a new laptop the other day. Lenovo Yoga 2 13. During use, the lower half of the screen is turning black. It's almost like a pop up in that it appears, and any interaction with the machine makes it disappear. I can't screen shot it so I don't think it's software related. I've updated my graphics drivers but that hasn't helped. I've also done a clean install of Windows 8.1 and am still having the same issue. I've attached an image to represent what I see. There seems to be no consistency with the size of the black area but it never goes more than half way up.

That looks like a graphics hardware fault, I would return it for repair or replacement under warranty.

This is a problem I've never encountered in the past (and, believe me, I've encountered hundreds of them). When I turn on my desktop pc, everything is working fine until I come to the log in screen. My curser is an arrow, and it works fine, moves around the screen as it should, until I try to place it into the "type your password" area. At that point, the curser arrow turns into a hand, and it won't allow me to type my password, which means I'm unable to get on line.

I've tried everything I know how to try; unplugging the machine, rebooting, trying a different mouse, etc. Nothing works. Can someone advise me what to do in this situation?

Thanks for your help.

... after 15 minutes of hanging in that weird startup screen, considering whether to hard reboot or not, it went into start repair (still there now)...

To make a long story short, I suspected something wrong with my hard drive due to a software giving me an i/o error, after some research (I am not knowledgable when it comes to computers), I ran chkdsk, when I woke up it was still running as it should be (in the process of 'replacing bad clusters' for certain files... so there was something wrong alright) and was at 28%.

After leaving my computer for ten minutes, I found my computer had gone to a black screen and seeing as I was reluctant to do a hard reboot, I waited it out and it moved to a windows safe mode startup screen... but only the big cursor and standard background was present, nothing else (see attached picture). After ten minutes it went to startup repair, which has been running for the past half hour.

What has happened during the ten minutes I was away and chkdsk was still only at 28%, why did the subsequent events unfold as they did? What can I do now??

A:chkdsk ran 8 hrs, then black screen, then weird startup screen, then..

Hello Kayron can you still get into safe mode did you say? If so go in and run sfc /scannow

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

if that doesn't run then maybe you have a hardware problem.

I've got an HP laptop (dv6568se) and lately it has been having issues going into sleep mode. I close the lid, but it remains on and doesn't go to sleep. windows 10 HP Pavilion 15- n259Tx ( Can't type Password in login screen)

I am facing this issue that I can't type Password in login screen in windows 10.

When I press key to enter password nothing happened. Password field is blank, it is not detecting keystrokes.

I ran chkdsk /f and /r , no issue found. I ran through safe mode and then i was able to enter password. But when I again tried to login normally I couldn't enter password.

Later I did factory reset by pressing f11 key (using HP recovery manager) which wiped everything and from windows 10 it got restored to original windows 8.

So now in windows 8 during first login I entered password and it worked.

I restarted my system and Woah same problem again. I couldn't enter password.

I have been struggling with an intermittent problem for many months, and it is getting worse. I am running windows vista on a toshiba satellite laptop.

My screen will go dark (not quite as black as when the computer is off) when I am using it, and although the computer is still working, I cannot see the screen. Then, on startup, I can occasionally see flashes of the startup logo, which is enough to let me know it is loading. My cursor quits working as well.

After I run spybot in safe mode, and run it again at startup, it works for some time. (This last time was 2 days). So I believe I have a nasty virus. I run Norton 360 all the time, spybot rather frequently, and malaware bytes about once a month.

I am able to get it in safe mode by hitting the down arrow once, and hitting enter.

It is very frustrating. I don't think it is the video card, as it is repaired after spybot use.

Any suggestions?

A:Startup screen flickers to black, then all black screen

That is weird situation I'd say. I am unsure what actually is the issue here, perhaps one way of finding what may be happening is having a look at your Event Viewer Logs. You can find Event Viewer, in Control Panel, Administrative Tools.

Also please follow these 8-steps, and post your logs at Malware and Virus Removal Forum for analysis. Regards

Recently, I 'fixed' my dual boot system so that I could boot without windows again, using a recovery disk with bootrec.exe \fixmbr and bootrec.exe \fixbcd. The computer is booting properly now.

However, it has developed a problem. I can no longer enter sleep or hibernation. When trying either, the screen will fade to black as expected, but then nothing will happen; no keypresses will turn the screen on again. In the meantime, the computer seems to work 'normal', just with the screen off. After a while, the computer will simply power off and I will be greeted with 'windows didn't shut down successfully' upon restart.

I updated my drivers, updated and removed the Lenovo Power Manager, updated and resetted the BIOS, and checked powercfg -A which looks the way it should according to what I found on the internet.

Can anyone help me?

A:Unable to enter sleep/hibernation, black screen instead

Hello sanchises and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like some system files might have become damaged or corrupt when you "fixed" your dual boot system. I'd try running a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (Option Two), this tutorial.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

I'd also consider running a full scan with your anti-virus of choice just in case. A couple of free on-demand scanners worth considering are Malwarebytes and ESET Online Scanner.

If the problem still exists please post back.

Except that I can turn on and off the keyboard lights and if I have the battery in and take out or put in the ac adapter the computer makes a beeping sound. I've tried removing the battery, external devices and the ac adapter and then hold the powerbutton down, no success.I've tried pressing the F-keys to enter safe mood, but nothing happens.I've tried pressing the Lenovo recovery button, still nothing.I've also tried to install windows with a usb but nothing happens. I'm at a lost, does anyone know anythin more I can try??Appreciate all help!!

Hi, Looking at the post you made earlier in the year, the code e9lo77qz2g is correct for the hash you've posted. As it no longer works, check the following. 1.  Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Plug in the AC Adapter ( leave the battery out for the moment ), start the notebook and try entering the code again. 2.  Try entering the code via an external usb QWERTY keyboard. 3.  Remove the hard drive, start the notebook and try entering the code. Regards, DP-K

I am running Windows XP Professional Edition SP3 and the issue is on startup after the Windows loading animation the screen goes totally black with no cursor in sight.

This happened after a power cut when the computer suddenly shut down.

I can run it in safe mode.

I can run another Windows XP Professional installation that I have on my PC (same HDD) and that works with no issues.

I used system restore (24 hours) and it starts up after that, but then after restarting it will not work. Same applies for when I did a system restore from 1 week ago.

All help is appreciated!

Hello everyone.

I've had great success with computer problems here in the past and am hoping someone can help me out again. I've read through some of the 'booting to black screen' posts on here, and it seems like I need a Windows XP recovery disk, which I do not have.

A little bit of info on my problem:

I was given a Gateway desktop by a friend when it stopped working for her and she bought a new one rather than dealing with it. She is not a computer person at all, and could only tell me that it stopped working, no other specifics. When I try to boot the computer, the Gateway screen comes on for a second or two, then it goes straight to black screen. I've tried hitting F2 or F8 or F10, but nothing happens. My friend says that she doesn't think that the computer came with a recovery disk, or if it did, she doesn't have it any longer.

Is there anything else I can try, or do I have to get my hands on a Windows XP disk? I don't think I know anyone who has one, so is there anywhere that I could get one online?

Thanks in advance,

Hi again,

I have another very nasty issue...
My system fails to enter Standby or Hibernation. When I start the process, the monitor fades out to black - as normal - and the system begins to disable devices. I can see i.e. that an attached USB-Stick gets turned off. Unluckily, Windows seems to get stuck in between - my WLAN-Card seems to stay on (indicated by its LED), and the system just gets stuck there. (Interestingly, although the WLAN-Card stays on, the computer seems to disconnect correctly - I can't RDP in in this state.) I have to hold the power switch for 4 seconds to stop that situation.

The behavior started a few days ago, while I was messing around with my drivers because of another (unrelated) issue. Unluckily, System Restore doesn't want to go back, so I'll have to find another solution.
My biggest problem: I just can't find a way to analyze what device is causing the problem - the Event Log shows nothing of interest, and I can't think of other important logs.

Does anyone have an idea what may cause this or how to debug that issue?

Thank you for your help!
Felix Freiberger

Hi! I recently got a broken store and trying to fix it last week with a cmd method found on google. After scan and doing something it says it's ready. But yesterday after boot i got the well-known issue with the blinking black screen and moving cursor. Nothing helped Repair said that it cannot repair my pc. And it appeares that it cannot find any restore points wich is weird, the last i did was on 8 july since then i didn't installed that much.

Safe mode was hard either. The restart from Advanced Startup options said it had error d0000452. The solution i tried was RegCurePro from another hdd with win7 installed but it didn't fixed it. Lastly the sfc /scannow says it can't find anything to repair. Enabling the safemode from cmd was also a failure and says bcdedit cannot be found or somethin.....

The last thing is to refresh my pc but i leave it on the end. Is there anything i didn't try yet? pls tell me I'm on dual boot with OS X and have rights on windows files if that could help somehow..

I don't remember what was this fix, it was a week ago...Using Windows 8 Enterprise 32bit(not 8.1).

Nothing happens on pressing F1 or F10.
Have checked by replacing RAM, removing HDD, on battery only, on power only-but result is same!

Upon booting my computer, I'm presented with the option to go into startup repair, or start normally. If I start normally, it loads the logo, but before it gets to the login screen, it crashes to the boot screen. If I select the startup repair option, it shows a loading bar, which completes, but then the screen just goes completely black, no cursor.

I tried to use the disk system repair that Microsoft recommended, but it just shows a blue screen (not a bsod), and just the spinning load cursor. I'm currently writing this from Ubuntu running on livecd from the same computer, running at native resolution (in case it was an issue with the graphics card).

My specs are:

A:Crash to bootscreen on startup, startup repair black screen

See if disconnecting the hard disk allows you to boot from the repair disc off your CD/DVD drive. Avoid Static Damage to Your PC when removing the hard disk connection. Also, before removing the hard disk connection, make sure the power is drained from the system by turning off the computer, unplugging it from the wall/surge protector, and holding down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and allow power to dissipate from components.

I have searched through forums and tried the following:
Removed battery
removed battery and kept finger on power button
started up with power lead only
pressing ctrl/alt/del and typing in explorer.exe or explorer
starting in safe mode (which it will do!) and typing in msconfig and the disabling some bits and peices and restarting
starting up in low graphics mode

none of which seem to be helping. Is this a lost cause so i take it to a proffesional repairer, or is this soemthing i cna fix myself?

I would be most grteful for any help anyone can offer

During working with it last night it locked up and required a power down and restart and the black screen was what came up before anything else. in the middle of the screen is a blue bar with "enter password" in the bar. it most be a microsoft password requirement used by them it is not asking for my password.

I think this is more likely to be a BIOS or Hard Drive password if it comes up before the Windows loading screen. Probably need to contact manufacturer.

Ive been experiencing this issue since i got the computer and ive been trying to tackle it as an offshoot from another thread. When entering my password my computer will not give me the spinning wheel, no cursor or CTRL+ALT+DELTE options. Other thread:

Ive tried about everything i know how from the suggestions searching on here and other online forums. Ive updated drivers. Ive run command prompts with nothing coming back as a problem. Ive checked for Malware. This issue happens about 3-4 times a day anymore.

Today i realized that my Analog and Digital monitor cables were hooked up. I disconnected the Analog cable(cause i dont need two) and i set my screen saver to come on after a minute. Since then i havent had the black screen but it takes anywhere from 3-15 seconds for the desk top to load, and really seems really inconsistent. As well as a huge headache for a 3 week old refurbished machine.

Any help and or suggestions are appreciated. thank you

My laptop Dell Inspiron 15R 5520(Core i3 2370M 6GB ram win 7 64bit)  worked perfectly from Nov2012-April2016.

Now the screen started flickering and jumping since a few days and there's a white dotted line that appears along the top of the screen that starts the minute there is any kind of display.
How do I figure out if the inverter on the screen is faulty or if it's the screen cable or the whole screen itself?
To satisfy my curiosity I opened up my laptop to find that the lcd cable was badly crushed under the screen hinge (definitely , a design/manufacturing issue! Will dell take responsibility?), and each time the screen was shut/open there was substantial pressure on the cable was what I noticed.
Unfortunately I'm out of warranty and I don't know what to do.
Please advise on fixing this issue.

I am working on a friend's Vista Gateway machine. She ocassionally gets a blue screen and then she gets the System Repair screen. We got both when we tried to download her new anti-virus (yes, we uninstalled the old one first).

Then she told me that her last 'helper' told her not to download/install anymore Windows updates. This has been several months, and I told her I thought by now it may be a good idea to update. So we did. 64 out of 65 updates downloaded, installed and configured properly. One got an unknown error message. I went ahead with the reboot, and never got Windows back again.

Now I just get a black screen, even after going into safe mode, or selecting the system repair option, or the start Windows normally option. I tried going in the Boot options, and found that it was set to CD/DVD. I tried to change it to Main hard drive, but it didn't stick.

I'm not a programmer. I think I can change BIOS settings if you tell me to do something with those. I haven't tried the F8 command. Any ideas?

Hey guys, I've recently encountered a problem with my 2 year old computer. Sometimes (not always) after turning the computer on and getting the Welcome screen the screen remains black (apart from the cursor). Eventually it may continue loading to the desktop however sometimes it doesn't. It's getting annoying because if it doesn't I have to cold reboot it. The only 'recent' upgrade to my computer was about 2 months ago when I installed a AMD Radeon 7850 OC to replace my overheating ATI Radeon 5770. Thanks.

Hi, I was watching a movie when my computer froze in the middle of it so I manually restarted it. I have a compaq presario x1000 laptop 1.5 years old. It restarted but then the color on the screen flickered for a few seconds and I got an error message from windows saying a fatal error occured and that the error had been logged. Then it froze again so I manually restarted it again. This time it froze even faster so I tried to restart it again but it wouldn't start up. The power light is on and I can hear the fans running but the screen is black and the compaq logo won't even appear. I tried hooking it up to a monitor to see if the screen was broken but its not. I also tried to stick in a reboot cd but I couldn't see anything on the screen. Any help would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks a lot, Michelle.

A:Please help black screen at startup

The fact that you cannot seem to get ANY kind of "visual" from your computer means you have a very limited number of options, made even less so if you are less than computer inclined. Hooking up another monitor to an alternate video output may "rule-out" your laptop screen (monitor) being bad, but your video card could be out, or worse. Can you hear the Hard Drive spinning and clicking during boot ? Is it making any "beeping" noises ?

The critical step here is if you can boot to BIOS. That means, when you first turn on your computer, start tapping the "del" key about once a second and see if you can get to a 2-color screen (usually white text on blue background).

If you can get THAT far, that means something. If you can't get that far, you should be finding out if your machine is under warranty. You should probably do that anyways, even if you can get to BIOS, because this sounds serious and it sounds like hardware, and if it is still under warranty I would recommend getting it fixed and or replaced now, before it completely detonates after the warranty (if there is one) expires.

If you can get to BIOS, write back and we'll see what can be done.

If I should start my own thread on this matter I shall but I am having serious issue for which no fix seems to work. Basically I have a friend's computer (running Win10 Home v1511) which has the black screen with cursor after login issue. I tried all the popular fixes for that to no avail. I tried the sfc /scannow and that gets to about 49% before failing. I tried doing /restorehealth with DISM and get error: 1392. I tried using a tech bench ISO to repair the image and still I get error: 1392. I tried to do an in place upgrade using an ISO with the anniversary update but every time I get the error "Setup couldn't start properly."

If it makes a difference I was trying all of this in normal mode and not safe mode.

Ok so Im working on this laptop and it was booted in windows but the screen was black. I plugged in an external monitor and it worked and on the laptop screen it faded back up just a little bit not enough to really see anything though. So I used a multimeter on the inverter and it came back ok with 50Hz. So I plugged everything back in and put all the screws back and when I turned on the laptop again the lights and everything came on but when the hdd light started to flash the screen just turned off. When I plug in the external monitor it says no signal.

What do you guys think the problem is?

The laptop is a Hp G60

Also if it helps this guy came to me earlier in the week and he was missing some screws that were holding his screen to the hinges of the screen. Also the wires that were inside the screen were falling out and being pinched by broken plastic.

A:Black Screen on Startup

The cable that goes from the motherboard to screen, through where the laptop folds over, is supposed to be something that can fail on a laptop especially if its picked up by the screen half.

I hope this is the correct area to post this.
Several hours ago, while I was browsing online, a blue screen suddenly appeared with a "There is something wrong with your PC" type message. I have gotten that blue screen a couple times in the past and it always turned out fine, so I didn't think anything of it. I reset my PC, but instead of things working like normal again as it had in the past, I get a black screen that persists even if I leave it on for several hours. I get the "Toshiba" loading screen in the beginning, but then the black screen appears afterwards and nothing else happens. I don't get the log-in prompt or anything like that. No matter how many times I turn the PC off and back on, the black screen comes back.
Unfortunately, I don't have the money to just go out and buy a new PC, but at the same time, I absolutely can't afford to be without one, as my livelihood depends on it. I need this PC for work, in additon to there being a lot of stuff on the PC I can't do without, or that I don't want to lose. I've been panicking for hours about this because I don't know what I'm going to do without this PC. I'm at my wit's end.
Does anyone here happen to know what the problem could be, and hopefully how to fix it? Please, I desperately need the help.

I posted this in another subforum and was told to try this forum for help. Here is the long version of my problems. Below is the short version:I got a virus (AVCare) yesterday. I thought I had caught it using SuperAntiSpyware; however, when I rebooted, I kept getting error message about Run32dll, and I was unable to start any spyware/malware/virus removal programs (they would quickly shut down after I started them, or I'd get an error message during installation). Windows Explorer kept crashing and restarting. I was able to reboot and get to my desktop, but I kept getting the Explorer errors and restarts. During one of my many random reboots, I found myself staring at a black screen after booting up. I can see the cursor, and I can get the "sticky keys" window to pop up, but I can't use CTRL+ALT+DEL or anything like that. Since then, I've been unable to boot to anything BUT the black screen. I've tried normal startups, all forms of Safe Mode, System Restore, Last Known Good Configuration, etc. They all immediately give me a black screen on startup, though. How do I fix this virus problem when I'm completely unable to access ANYTHING? The only "program" I've been able to get to was command prompt via Repair Your Computer; I can't access anything through normal boots or Safe Mode, though. Please help!

A:ALWAYS Black Screen At Startup

Sorry to cross-post this, but I was able to get out of the black screen. I used System Restore; the earliest point I could restore to was roughly the time the virus was introduced into the system, though. With a constant black screen, I felt like I had no choice, so I did it. I was able to restart in normal mode without the black screen. However, Windows Explorer still crashes constantly. I am unable to access any type of spyware/virus protection program, and I cannot use HiJack This to post a log. Any antivirus-type program I try to run "disappears" 2-3 seconds after it starts a scan. Pretty much any program I run gives me an error message and forces me to restart the program, so nothing is working. How can I fix the virus without virus scans AND without knowing the names of the infected files? Is there anything I can do?

This sounds like a serious hardware fault; out of curiosity I would attempt to boot a live operating system such as Ubuntu Linux:

Download | Ubuntu

Download Ubuntu, burn the image file to disk (using ImgBurn, or similar), then boot your computer from this disk. Ubuntu has an option to "Try Ubuntu" which essentially runs it live from the CD.

If you get an Ubuntu desktop you can try moving files around on your hard drive, inserting a CD, etc.

Given what you wrote in your post - I doubt that you will get to the Ubuntu desktop, which confirms that you are experiencing a hardware fault.

Best of luck

FWIW: Spyware...can generally be easily defeated by running the appropriate software, there is no need to create logs, etc...just install, update and use the applicable applications of your choice.

Understand one thing...there is no one application...that can protect a system all the varying types of malware. System defenses should start with a firewall, installation of all critical augmented by a reliable AV program...and then reflect at least one program known to be adept at handling spyware/adware.

Did you try to boot into safe mode?
