Microsoft Edge accessing Windows Explorer = Did you mean to switch apps? - Can this be removed

Q: Microsoft Edge accessing Windows Explorer = Did you mean to switch apps? - Can this be removed

Dear Support,

I have an in-house web application that accesses Windows network locations, using something like this:

<a href: file://<file-location>>Click here</a>

The internal website is added to Trusted Sites, with security settings to allow the application to open folders/files within our network.

In Internet Explorer, on Windows 7, this works fine.
On Windows 10, although this still works fine in Internet Explorer (without any messages), Edge prompts the user to confirm the irritating Did you mean to switch apps? message.
Can this be removed/overwritten/anything?!

Thanks in advance

Hi guys!

I'm having this problem since yesterday, and I can't find anyone with the same problem.
I have this problem where no microsoft applications work. I can't open Edge, Windows Store or Photos app. When I want to open them, there is absolutely 0 response. No error-message, nothing! When I observe the task manager while starting these apps, they DO appear for like, 1 second. They immediately disappear though.
I don't know what the issue is. I have this problem since I installed the application: SaferVPN (I already uninstalled it).
Ou yea, my Windows search doesn't work either. No reaction from the system at all.

I already tried running sfc /scannow.
My computer is up to date.
There were no windows updates involved at the point of time where the problem occurred.
I tried restarting windows several times.

I run Windows 10 for quite a long time now. Also, when I want to add a Microsoft Account, it give no response either. (I think thats because it usually opens a small Edge Browser Windows for entering the credentials.

Can you guys please help me? I usually find my solutions in already existing forums, but I didn't find anyone who had the same problem as me (perhaps I didn't google the right thing and couldn't find it because of that.)

Thanks for anything in advance.
Kind Regards,
Maarten

Hi smaardy, welcome to Ten Forums. The best way right now to fix your problem is by doing an repair install/ in place upgrade. This is from the Tutorial Forum. Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums . Choose the option to keep your apps and files. There was a way to re-register the windows apps, but it has not been working with the latest version of windows (fall update or version 1511).

First off Hello everybody and sorry this is my first post I am normally just a lurker. This forum, even though I have never posted ,has been a huge help with quite a few things and a great resource in general.

Trying to clear out the All Apps list on the start menu. Most apps I have uninstalled and utility folders deleted. The 3 things left on there that I would still like to remove are Cortana, Microsoft Edge, and Settings. I do not want to uninstall Cortana or Microsoft Edge. I simply do not want those three things to appear in the list. i.e. I deleted the Administrative Tools folder from programdata/microsoft/windows/startmenu which stops the shortcuts from appearing in the list but I still have access to all the things within.

I know its small but its important. On a side note I could have sworn i read somewhere that microsoft was going to be updating their upgrade system so you no longer had to do an in place upgrade before you could do a clean install. Does anybody know anything about that or is that not a thing. I do not seem to be able to find the original article I was reading and may have misread.

Bit of a late reply here, but the issue is still relevant so I thought I would reply.

As yet there still seems to be no solution to this problem. Microsoft have bypassed the normal folders that list apps in the start menu so that some apps can't be removed from the list. This includes Edge, Cortana and... Read more

In windows vista and windows 7 Microsoft removed the old class Windows Explorer .

The old class Windows Explorer .Show a root directory ( The root directory is the highest directory level of a disk. The files and folders you see when you open (double-click) your hard disk icon are the contents of that disk's root directory. ) and windows explorer the displaying of directory tree hierarchy

The only thing that comes close to old class Windows Explorer is when a user click on computer ( for old windows user called my computer) and you see drive and you click (C) and + under C on split-pane, list on left .

But this crude way of doing it and when user types in run/search box in start manue it takes you to a more user profile page of things for user to work with than the admid will work with.

The old class Windows Explorer like computer ( for old windows user called my computer) is some you really did not want computer novice or young kid to go into. That why in old windows OS computer novice or young kid use my documents folder on the desktop and to run programs click start than all programs and click on the programs in the list and the admid will lock out of other areas

The Windows Explorer back in windows 3.1 was file manager this was not for novice or young kid to go into. Why is Microsoft changing this.

This more meaningfuf for advanced computers users.

I hear you can download a advance file manager to get it to look like this ( third party) http://utilities.softland... Read more

A:Why did Microsoft removed the old class Windows Explorer

Not sure if you're running it, but I have Windows 7 Professional and when you change the theme to "Classic" it turns into an approximation of the old XP look and has similar functions, including the one that you outline in this post. You may want to give that a try before using third party software.

I have Windows 7 Professional on my PC. In the first load I had, the PC should automatically detect if the LAN cable was plugged in, turn off the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable was now in use.
Unfortunately, I had to reload my PC, and since then I can't get it to do it again.
So, what I'd like to achieve is this: Have Windows automatically detect when the cable is plugged in, turn of the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable is in use - and, obviously, vice versa.
Can someone tell me what I need to do, please?

A:Have Windows 7 automatically switch to LAN when cable is plugged in and switch to wireless when it's removed

Hi,
There are two methods can help you.
1. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings> and right click your wired and wireless adapters one at a time to change the properties. Select IPv4, click <Properties>
then click <Advanced>. For each one, clear the "Automatic metric" check box and assign the metric value manually. Setting your wired adapter?s metric value lower than wireless adapter one, such as ?1? for wired adapter and ?2? for wired adapter.

2. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings>,
hold down 'alt' to bring up the "File" menu, select "Advanced", select
"Advanced Settings" from the dropdown menu, adjust the priority of your wired adapter higher than your wireless adapter in the "Advanced Settings" window under the "Adapters and Bindings" tab.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click ?Mark as Answer? on the post that helps you, and to click ?Unmark as Answer? if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

It seems any real work or asking question about MS Edge not doing any thing very well except saying it' read fast get covered up. Will Yes it is fast because it doesn't do very much. I keep reading about problems I am having and the solution is always use
the option to open it with IE. So what good is Edge other then adding another layer of confusion without controls.
If it doesn't get fixed real quick. It will cause many users to start dumping Windows 10 and going other places for support, like Apple, or getting off of windows systems. Right now it is a pain in the backside, and don't try tell us how good it is,
because you sound like Bagdad Bob did in IRAQ.
MS Edge needs serious work to make it functional for real work...

Internet Explorer turns 20 this year, but there will be no celebrations. Instead, IE is being pushed off the Windows desktop in favor of a new web browsing experience: Microsoft Edge.

Internet Explorer is not dead, nor will it be missing from Windows 10 when it ships on July 29. Instead, it will be like the ironing board you take out of the closet when you absolutely have no choice but to iron that shirt. You?ll use IE when Microsoft Edge?s forward-leaning technology doesn?t support the outmoded past.

Microsoft executives explain the name by saying it lives "at the edge of modern web standards and capabilities" and seeks to push limits. It may also be called this because it's an edgy gamble on the future, one that Microsoft did not approach lightly.

This is a great hoax, and also seems to make it or for two reasons:
1. Attempt of Stop of growth of Microsoft Edge
or 2. Google Revenge
What is the solution? This:

After go to Emulation, in Browser select or Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, and Solutionated.
Well, I hope to see their opinions and also see that users of Google in Edge make.

I'm not exactly sure about what you're saying.. Afaik Google hasn't implemented any limits for Edge users. Do you have proof of this? The picture you have added does not proof that Google has implemented a limited number of searches for Edge users

A:return apps removed while refreshing PC/ windows 8

Hi Pops, I am sorry that happened to you    -- it is actually the way the strandard Refresh program is written. The short answer:  You have to reinstall everything that is missing from your backups. The list of missing apps should be in a file located on your Desktop:  Removed Apps.htmlHow you get them back depends on what they are, where they came from, and what is needed to resintall them. About the standard Refresh procedure:Refresh your Windows 8 system from a Recovery Drive ? OEM Recovery You might like to read about how to use File History (backup and restore features) and how to create a Custom Refresh Image that will have more of what you need when you next perform a Refresh on Windows 8.  Those subjects are included in the document link shown below.  This may well be a case of "too little, too late" for this time, but you might find the information helpful later. When SkyDrive opens, look for and open the file named:Windows 8 Features ? A Quick Tour I hope this helps. Click the Kudos Star!It is a great ?Thank You? for the HP Experts who are here to help!

Earlier today, I decided to accept the free offer on my Win 7 Samsung laptop to upgrade to Windows 10. The upgrade checker started by telling me that this laptop was compatible but now seems to be in two minds about the subject and won't let me upgrade. Some assistance would be greatly appreciated, as the July 29 deadline is fast approaching.

One screen on the Get Windows 10 dialogue box reads as follows:

This PC works with Windows 10

You won't be able to use the Guest account in Windows 10.

You'll need to uninstall these apps during the upgrade
Samsung Recovery Solution 5
Easy Settings [another Samsung app]

I decided to uninstall the 2 Samsung apps before starting the Win 10 upgrade, but the Get Windows 10 dialogue box still insists that they are there despite a couple of reboots. Those apps no longer appear in Control Panel's Uninstall or Change a Program list. Neither are there any obviously related Services still running.

When I try to proceed with the Win 10 upgrade I am presented with another page of the Get Windows 10 dialogue box:

Unfortunately, this PC is unable to run Windows 10
We're sorry to let you know that this PC can't upgrade to Windows 10 because one of more things are incompatble. See right for details [that takes me back to the other page quoted above, which tells me that my laptop works with Win 10!]

This is very frustrating. Where do I go from here?

"Right-click taskbar > Properties > Taskbar > Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar" determines whether Store (Metro/Modern) apps show up in the regular taskbar as well as in the "point to upper-left corner for recent apps" area.Apparently, this has recently acquired a bug where icons for Store apps will remain in the taskbar even after they are tombstoned/killed.Turning off this setting will clean icons for tombstoned Store apps from the taskbar, but, of course, leaving it off makes it more difficult to work with Store apps that are actually running. This setting is, for some reason, also responsible for whether the taskbar is accessible by mousing to the bottom of the Start Screen. With it unchecked, there is no way to access the taskbar when running an application that blocks the taskbar, like a video or a game running in fullscreen or windowed borderless modes. Leaving it off is therefore not a viable option.

The part about tombstoned apps not vacating the taskbar is new behavior (to me at least), so I assume this was broken in a recent Windows update (I installed over 200MB of updates earlier today). My new habit to work around this bug will be to uncheck, apply, check, and apply this setting whenever I close Store apps, but is anyone aware of a real fix for this issue?

Microsoft Edge comes out as a promise to finally end the bad era of Internet Explorer. It?s a browser built from scratch with new UI, new engine and many other promising things. On the speed test front, Edge now on par with or sometime faster than its competitors. However, one thing that keep people from changing to Edge is the lack of extension. Microsoft promised it would come shortly after the July launch of Windows 10. Now the feature is pushed further into early 2016. And no extensions means no ads blocking at this time. Ads blocking has become an important thing and for laptop/tablet users, it?s crucial because these ads are eating away your battery. While waiting for Edge?s extensions, I?ll show you how to use Hosts file as a way to block ads.

I have noticed Edge being sluggish and more demanding of CPU resources than Firefox.  Today, for example, I had 5 or 6 tabs open in Edge, with it being the only browser I had open, and the computer I'm using had some noticeable sluggishness in browsing and when opening other apps such as WPS Writer and WPS Spreadsheets.  Granted, I had 2 tabs open for Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com) and it is a heavily tasking website.  But, with Edge closed and Firefox open with 25 tabs and then opening kbb.com and obtaining a price quote on a car, I did not experience the negative impact I noticed with Edge.  I have drifted away from Firefox for periods of time but I have enjoyed using it with Windows 10.  I have the latest version of Firefox, which is 42.0 at this time.  During the months I've used it with Windows 10, it has consistently performed well with many tabs open and/or viewing complex web pages. One feature I like very much is being able to right click and get a popup panel with Forward and Back buttons for navigating pages. With Edge, moving the mouse pointer up to the upper left corner of the window to click the Back or Forward button is required.

Microsoft is so confident of how it has hardened its Windows 10 Edge browser that it's dropped support for it in EMET 5.5.

"Given the advanced technologies used to protect Microsoft Edge, including industry-leading sandboxing, compiler, and memory-management techniques, EMET 5.5 mitigations do not apply to Edge," Microsoft's EMET team said.

Microsoft is just as confident that Windows 10 devices won't need EMET.

As of late, my computer has gotten so slow. Even on Microsoft Edge, the browser constantly hangs and says it's not responding. Sometimes it will even crash.

I have scanned everything with MBAM, SAS, and my antivirus program and they found no threats and still no sign of any performance gain. I have even optimized my disk with Disk Cleanup and ran the Defragmenter. No help whatsoever.

I am really getting tired of the problems with Windows 10. I am a big Microsoft fan, but enough is enough.

Please help!

I have window 10 pro updated to the anniversary edition. I would like to use Microsoft Edge. The only problem is that the javascript is not enabled so most pages are not viewable. My system:
Toshiba C640 Laptop with intel i5 2nd generation.

It initially had Win7 Pro which I updated to Win 10 pro and then recently to win 10 pro with anniversary update. Before the anniversary update I had the same problem since the end of December last year (2015). I was able to enable javascript by fixing the registry. This fix got overturned after the anniversary update. Unfortunately I have forgotten the regedit fix steps. The group policy route is not relevant since the allow script option is not visible under group policy.

Hello and welcome,

Java, ActiveX, Silverlight, Browser Helper Objects (BHOs) and other plugins are not supported in Microsoft Edge. Most modern browsers are moving away from plugins and toward standard HTML5 controls and technologies.

Today, we have updated the Microsoft Edge Dev site with major fixes and new features, including Windows 10 virtual machines with Microsoft Edge and a faster, clearer platform roadmap. With these features, we are excited to remove the ?Beta? tag from Microsoft Edge Dev, and will be redirecting modern.ie to our new home.

Test your site in Microsoft Edge with free Windows 10 virtual machines

Windows 10 virtual machines are now available with the latest updates to Microsoft Edge and the underlying web platform. With this release, we have automated the process we use to create the virtual machines, so future updates will be available more quickly as the platform is updated. By popular demand, we?ll also be supporting new formats for VMs, starting with Vagrant boxes (with VirtualBox) and QEMU. You can expect to see these starting in the coming weeks.

We have also updated RemoteIE to use the latest Microsoft EdgeHTML rendering engine inside Internet Explorer, which gives a very similar rendering experience to testing inside Microsoft Edge. RemoteIE continues to leverage Azure RemoteApp to enable cloud-based testing across platforms without the need to download virtual machines. We are also continuing to work on making Microsoft Edge available via Azure RemoteApp and will provide further updates as we make progress.

Hi there

Great stuff -- I'll see if I can convert one to VMWARE format. I used QEMU years ago -- thought it had "Died the death" -- when VMPLAYER couldn't CREATE VM's but only PLAY them QEMU was a great free tool in being able to create new VM's for VMPLAYER to work with.

Edit -- VMWARE format IS available in the download. !!!!

Anyway I'll post results of messing around with this piece of software if I can get it to work.

And -- Ms have images as well as for Windows - but MAC and LINUX TOO !!!! So Ms does believe that there is life outside Windows.

Edge is severely behind in times. It doesn't run well compared to other big name browsers, has a lack of extensions and half baked implementation of them with the lack of a solid store category in the windows store, and far more. But today I'm going to focus on 5 reasons why I can't use EDGE as my daily browser on Windows 10. Customizable New Tabs PageEdge Crashes On Form FillsAbility To Mute TabsEdge Becomes Unresponsive When Tabs Become UnresponsiveRight Click & Search 1: Customizable New Tabs Page
Currently on the new tab page, the only websites that will appear are ones that Edge believes you visit frequently. That means you can't choose what websites are show on this page. In order for you to get websites shown on this page you first must visit that page many times and then make sure you never accidently click the little "x" on that website when loading it otherwise it will disappear forever unless you completely reset Edge. What a crock of bull. We should be able to choose what sites we want there, choose the order in which they appear, and if we accidently click the "x" button on their link, then it shouldn't require completely starting over with EDGE to get them back. I shouldn't have to switch to Firefox, Chrome, or Opera just to be able to customize the websites on my new tab page. 2: Edge Crashes On Form Fills
With Edge in it's current form, it is prone to crashes. That is common knowledge. Sadly. But one of the biggest issues I have is t... Read more

You may also try the Windows registry setting. Kindly be careful while editing windows registry.
Have a look at the following registry location (note that you need to invoke regedit.exe with administrative privileges in order to make any changes in this location) and ensure that the value ClearPageFileAtShutdown is set to 0 (if it is set to 1, change the value to 0).

When writing an email in Windows 10 Mail, I can highlight text with the mouse and cut or paste it but I can't drag to move it, but I can in other apps. When I want to move text, I have to select it, copy it, paste it, go back to original text, highlight it and cut it. Very annoying,
In the Windows 10 Mail app I can't scroll messages with the trackpad, I can in other apps though. See previous post: Windows 10 Mail App---trackpad scrolling - Windows 10 Forums
It seems newer Microsoft apps like Edge and Sticky Notes, exhibit this same behavior, while other apps, like Firefox, OpenOffice and Windows Live Mail 2012, don't.
Is it just my system exhibiting these behaviors or is it happening to everyone?

I was having a conversation on skype and firefox open but not browsing. So only this 2 app running.
Suddenly I saw the effect when you open a new window, but in fact it didn't appear anything.
So I opened Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 - and watched the processes on "Network Activity".
It was showing "Skype" and "Windows Explorer".
The strange thing is that Windows Explorer was making activity downloading and uploading (just a few kb) from an USA ip
*23*.*62*.*237*.*14*. Then after 1 minute Windows Explorer went away from Kasersky List and remained only Skype.
I want to add some additional details about my friend I was talking in skype: He is not from USA and he was using Skype on Android smartphone.

Was my Windows Explorer remote controlled by someone else?
Is my pc infected?
Is it normal for Windows Explorer to make network activity?
Or there is nothing to worry about??
Is the ip related to any update server from Microsoft or any other software?

Microsoft Kill Switch for Windows 10 Insider versions - gHacks Tech News

Microsoft revealed yesterday that it will kill old Windows 10 Insider versions that are expired so that devices won't boot killed builds anymore.

The company's Insider program is designed to give users and companies a chance to test new builds of the Windows 10 operating system before they become available on the stable channel, and to provide Microsoft with data that it can use to fix or modify features.

Insiders can upgrade to the next build whenever it becomes available. All Insider Builds have an expiration date associated with them after which the copy expires.

The concept is not entirely new though. Last year, Microsoft announced that it would block old Windows Insider versions from booting.

Microsoft handles the expiration of licenses differently on retail versions of Windows. This involves usually a black desktop background, a notification, and reboots every hour.

This does not mean that the operating system cannot be used anymore though. Microsoft plans to change that however.

Microsoft's Windows 10 Kill Switch

Microsoft won't kill Windows 10 Insider Builds the moment they expire. The company will use a tiered approach for that to give users and administrators ample time to upgrade to a new version of Windows 10.

The process has the following steps:

A:Microsoft Kill Switch for Windows 10 Insider versions

This will go a long way in the fight to curb pirating of the insider builds too.
Now that it is a paid OS I have run into advertisements for unlocked insider builds,
MS is obviously aware of this too. Its a good tactic.
An OS rebooting every hour would drive me nuts lol
I like the Kill Switch idea, till malware authors find a way to exploit it and
your system starts rebooting randomly rofl.

Microsoft has a plan to stop people from ignoring Windows Store apps, and it involves putting recommendations in front of users' faces.

In Windows 10, Microsoft plans to look at how people are using the software, and figure out what kind of apps they might like. Over time, users may get app recommendations in different parts of the operating system.

For instance, the Start menu might show a recommendation directly underneath the list of most used apps. If the user installs the app, it'll then be available to launch from that same space. Microsoft's Joe Belfiore said he hopes this creates a cycle in which users discover new apps, pin them as Live Tiles in the Start menu, and free up the recommendation space for something new.

I had to add a built in administration profile in order to recover the damaged profile, and as indicated on the tutorial you have to erase a bak file in order to do so. My ABS computer stopped working a few days ago, the trouble is with the motherboard. It is under warranty and is in the process of being repaired.

Before I shipped it to get repaired I removed the hard drive, and would like to access this working hard drive on another system to back up critical data.

I was told it can be installed in place of a cd drive or dvd drive by removing the cd and installing the hard drive in it's place.

Is this true and how would I access this drive from the pc?

so i've just upgraded from w7 to w8 (please hold you judgements, i like it )

I have 4 hard drives, 2 of them still have my applications from w7. i had to do a fresh install, had some errors, but i would like to be able to open the old programs still on the other drives. i know the dll files will have been wiped, but is there any tool to scan for the ones i need again, and other files, to allow me to not have to reinstall a huge number of things, most of which i do not have the disks at uni for?

thanks

Hello Again,

I am the administrator and only "user" on my new Windows 8.1 laptop.

Two questions:

Firstly, I want full control/access to ALL the files and directories on my computer.

I've turned on "show hidden files" in the control panel but still get the access error shown on the attached image.

Secondly, how do I change from icons to details when viewing a folder? This was easy in XP but I can't seem to find the right place on W8.1

I know that the answers are out there on the WEB but it seems to take ages to search through all the results of a web search to find the relevant answer.

Maybe you could point me towards some good Windows 8.1 explanatory websites so that I don't have to keep posting here with basic questions.

I can't even access "My Documents"

Thanks in advance,

Michael

Hi, I have a 1TB Toshiba external HDD and really need to recover important files (mainly memorable pictures of family events).

2 days ago, it was fine until I was copying large files and then the progress bar when copying just disappears so I decided to do an attrib -h -r -s /s /d g:\*.* on the NTFS HDD. Was that right? I think now that it wasn't.

Now it really takes too long to open the folders and files, even right-clicking it too. Any help, will be great.

Sometimes, when a input a path to access it, it shows "g: not accessible, device is not ready" too.

Autoplay still shows it when connected, it,s just that accessing the folders inside bugs me.

Thanks.

It is still ok in Disk Management though..

Microsoft Office 10 (limited edition of only Word and Excel, stripped down) came with my Toshiba Satellite laptop. After some automatic Windows Updates that happened last night, I find that I cannot open my Word or Excel, and all my documents and spreadsheets are inaccessible. The programs were on some sort of virtual drive called "Q:\" , already installed when I bought the laptop computer. The computer will not let me access it nor open documents and spreadsheets that were created with those programs. Can anyone help? I am essentially out of business.

I'm encountering a number of random scrolling issues within Edge and other Universal/Modern/Store apps. When scrolling a web page, the page gets "stuck" and won't move within the browser window. Edge itself remains responsive - I can reload the page, or close its tab. And other tabs remain unaffected. Also, links on the page itself still work. I can actually interact with the portion of the page that's visible, just not scroll it in any direction. Reloading the page doesn't fix it, but if I close the tab and reopen it, then load the page again, it works (happened just this morning on "Dilbert.com" when viewing one of Scott Adams' blog entries).

I've noticed this behavior in at least one other app: Readiy (an RSS reader app). In the main "All Items" view, the list of articles will often become "stuck," much like a web page in Edge. I've also noticed the behavior occurs more often when using the touchpad in the Type Cover of my Surface.

Note: I'm running the Insider Preview build 10532 on a Surface 3 (not Pro) w/4GB RAM.

Anyone encountering anything similar?

I opened HyperTerm to try and access the switch through COM2, the port I thought it was connected to. I have rebooted the PC, turned the switch on/off - nothing. What am I missing???

So all a sudden I cannot access ie or firefox. Programs like aim and even games like wow and cs work fine tho and can access the internet, but im never able to display a browser. Im not a complete noob but ive never heard of this particular problem. I recently installed a startup program control pannel to control all that crap that i didnt want starting when i booted my comp. Im not sure if it happened exactly after i checked off many programs off my start list but i happened the same day, which is why i thought that i may have checked something critical off...but i really cant think of any critical programs that would affect ie only in the startup list and im pretty sure that the startup program control only lets you check off optional non critical programs but maybe im wrong. When i go home im going to try repairing ie in the add/remove program list and checking if my firewall may have accidently blocked it. but i dont known why it would of all a sudden be blocked when i wasnt even playing with the settings for the firewall. Has anyone heard of this problem before?

Hi,This is driving me crazy!! It started about three weeks ago.My Vista SP2 laptop boots up and acts fine when the WiFi connection is turned off (switch to disable radio on laptop). BUT when I boot up with it on, or I turn it on after boot up the PC freezes for between 2 and 4 minutes!! Task manager shows that the CPU usage stays at near 100% during this freeze time. Also the Hard Drive activity is above 75% and many apps are trying to use the Network connection. When I had MS Security Essentials it seemed to take 40 to70 % of the CPU time during this period. I have now removed it and replaced it with AVS. This is still taking 30 to 50 % during this initial internet start period. Also both seemed to continue to access all the files on my harddrive for long periods even with Auto scans were disabled.I've tried all the standard things: Avira, AVS, Malwarebytes runs and CCleaner. Disk Cleans, cache flushes. Nothing seems to make a major difference.I have followed the Prep Guide. attached are the requested files.Thank you in advance. I'm not sure when this started, but now as soon as I try to access anything in a specific folder, Windows Explorer will crash 100% of the time. If I so much as right click the directory itself, WE will crash.

I've already tried using ShellExtend View to check Context Menu Handlers. I checked all the ones not made by Microsoft by disabling them one by one and checking to see if any of them is causing the problem. None of them seems to be the culprit.

This folder contains a few hundred gigabytes of software, so I can't just delete it.

The Windows phone is a more than capable smartphone with a quick, smooth, intuitive interface. My Nokia Icon only lacks some current apps, only available on IOS and Android. On my Android phone I only have about 25 apps that I consider of functional value, but on the Icon, it's a mixed bag of full versions, pared down versions, 3rd party paid versions, or no app at all. I prefer the windows phone over the Samsung or Moto mobile phones I have access to but the app gap is becoming too difficult to deal with. Microsoft might think about creating their own apps to fill the gap and end the argument. Start with the apps linking with interfaces in new cars, fitness bands, music systems, and other smart devices/appliances like thermostats, people are most like to use on a daily basis.

I got a switch today which is like a router but no encryption etc (since it's 70+ dollars cheaper than a router). I connected both computers to the internet... the internet's working awesome (probably even better than before) and both computers are connecting nicely.... one computer is a HP (two weeks old) the other is a Cicero (but it rocks even better than the HP and it is 4 years old oO)

Now I did a IP check and they were different.... the last 6 numbers were completely different... but here's the problem... whenever I try to log into an online game the HP computer connects, but the Cicero computer doesn't connect for some reason. Now I'm not sure if it's an IP problem or if it's just the computer problem? But for some reason I think it has to do with the switch.... can anyone advice me on this one?

I mean I would understand if they don't let me connect since we got the same IP... but apparently that's not the case... but maybe there's something to do to mask the IP or whatever... I really don't know... but appreciate some suggestions...

A:Switch (router) -accessing Online Games Problem

Yunalesca, it surprizes me that you can get online with either computer. Only one computer can access the modem's IP at a time, which usually denies both if they attempt access the internet together. The point of a router is it utilizes DHCP to share the connection with several computers. It will function as a gateway and control the internal (LAN) IP addresses. It can and does serve other purposes but for home/small office envioments this is it primary job. The switch it like a smart hub, and is often used in conjunction with a router. On a closed LAN (no outside access) you can assign each computer an internal IP address and use a hub or switch to link them togther. You could also connect one computer to the internet directly thru the modem and "route" the other computers thru the first. Th first computer would be the "Gateway" computer. with a second NIC in the Gateway computer you would attach the switch or hub. That is what I would recommend if you cannot take back the switch and exchance it for a router. I would recommend the Linksys Nwtwork Everywhere NR041-mw 4 port Router. I have use it for years and as a basic router it is bullet proof.http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3910287

I bought a used Dell Dimension 8400 PC w 1 GB RAM, 160 GB HD, DVD/CD burner and reader with XP/SP2 running and MSFT Office 2003 installed on it. I tested it before purchase and it worked AOK including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. The owner (who flew to Spain the next day) removed some of his files before I picked it up but left AVG Antivirus and Office 2003 on it. Two days later, after thoroughly vacuuming it inside and setting it up, I found it impossible to access any Office apps without (apparently) invoking an installation of the app, with a "Preparing to Install" message from Windows Installer, then "Please Wait while Windows Configures MSFT Office 2003 Pro Edition" message, followed by "Gathering Required Info" followed by a long delay accompanied by the hourglass symbol and considerable disk activity. After a couple of minutes, the app comes up and appears to be AOK, but if I quit out of it and run it again it repeats the process. I looked into the installed software (via Control Panel/Add & Rmv Programs) and MSFT Office 2003 is listed there. I plan to take this up with the guy from whom I bought the PC but in the meantime has anyone any ideas about solving this problem (other than reinstalling Office 2003)?

hey guys, im new here (signed up solely to ask this question cuz it looks like a pretty cool site) and i need some advice

so i built my own computer out of purchased parts about a year ago but its been having freezing problems until a few months ago (bad hard drive lol!). i havent noticed this problem til recently (due to the constant efforts to diagnose the freezing/crashing) but my computer seems to eject any usb mass storage device when i try to say.... copy files into or out of whatever drive is connected, whether its a flash drive or my phone's sd card (which is connected via usb).

For example: this happened today - i tried to drag an .avi file out of a SanDisk cruzer and the windows dialog box pops up to tell me that it has begun copying. after 5 minutes, it is still 'Calculating...' the ETA and i notice that the explorer window that displays the content of the drive has been turned into that washed-out, unresponsive state. Running Windows 7, if i try to close the window, i get the choice to either close the program, wait for it to respond, or some other thing.

this happens if i plug any usb drive into any usb port (front or back) on my computer. Wow that was a lot to write. well if anyone has come across this sort of problem before or can help point me in the right direction,

I'm not sure why this is happening, but if I attempt to open a drive in Windows Explorer, it takes a really long time (sometimes several minutes). It takes that long for the progress bar on the address bar to fill up. Does anyone know why this would be?

A:Accessing drives in Windows Explorer takes a long time

I have only noticed this the first time or two that I open drives that where used by Vista and the Vista OS partition itself. Places with large numbers of files not created in 7 to start with. Explorer apparently needs to index these files so that it knows what's there to begin with. Hasn't happened here for a while. Yes if the partition (drive) is large it can take a few minutes. I would think mapping a network drive would have a similar process as windows discovers what all is available there.
