Win 8 screen size in Virtualbox

Q: Win 8 screen size in Virtualbox

Hi what is, I'm running Win 8 in Oracle VirtualBox version 4.1.4, and I'm finding the screen size to be small. I also run Ubuntu in virtualBox, and it has a big screen. Anybody any ideas on how to increase the screen size. Thanks

A: Win 8 screen size in Virtualbox

Hello Robin,

While running the Windows 8 VM in VirtualBox, you should be able to open the desktop from the Metro "Start" screen to change the screen resolution to a higher resolution the same way as in Windows 7 to have the VirtualBox window be larger.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I have Win XP SP2, all updated, Word 2002, SP3.

Choosing say A4 for page setup, setting it to 100% and viewing as Print layout, at 100% used to give a screen size page which was actually equal to A4 ie 21cm x 29.7cm.

For some time now, the screen size is now larger than that - the ruler at the top and bottom shows the marking as being 21cm x 29.7cm, but the cm units on the ruler are marked off at larger than cm units, consequently the screen size page is larger than actual.

This is annoying as it is not an accurate representation of the page layout for things on the page relative to each other.

Any ideas what has caused this and how to fix?

I purchased an Apple computer (a Macbook Pro 13") two months ago, and installed Windows 7 (run via VirtualBox) because I need to use one Windows-only software essential for my work. My problem is that I can't get the full 1280x800 resolution in Windows, as my current Windows settings offers only screen resolutions with a 4:3 aspect ratio (800x600 to 1600x1200).

Windows 7 recognizes my display as "Generic Non-Pnp monitor on Standard VGA graphics adapter". I downloaded the latest driver for Intel HD Graphics 3000, "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Windows 7", but the installation was not successful, showing this message: "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software".

Any advice on how can I get a 1280x800 screen resolution option? Or maybe, what exactly are the "minimum requirements" for installing the Windows 7 graphics driver for a Macbook Pro?

Host OS: Mac OS X (Snow Leopard) ver 10.6.8
VirtualBox version: 4.1.0
Windows version: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1

Thanks in advance.

Hi Protonic, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Might it be the obvious reason? You need to install VirtualBox Guest Additions for the emulated GPU to fully work. This pic is from an Ubuntu vm running on VirtualBox, but for you the procedure would be the same:

(When your Seven guest is running, install Guest Additions from vm's Device menu.)

If you have a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 whats your browser window size?

its obviously not 1366 x 768

is there a way to see this for other screen sizes?

A:Screen size and browser size?

If you want the renderale size, this can be grabbed by a quick bit of javascript accessing the window.screen property (for example). There are other ways as well.

I have a suspicion that I am missing something very basic indeed. But if I don't ask, I won't know.

When I download images from my digital camera and view them, they show a certain amount of content. When I print them, usually in 6x4 format, a small part of the image gets chopped off - usually the top of someone's head! Could someone please tell me how I can ensure that what I print is what appears on the screen without reducing the content of the original image?

Many thanks

I have new Dell Windows 8.1, IE, and using older 2010 office (word). When I write or create something on Word, it doesn't match the actual 8 x 11" page, and I always have to guess and see if the size is right. When I print, the sizes are never the same. I need to compare both of them exactly, so that I can see the right size on the screen. How can I do this? I have tried many many possibilities but never seem to work. Thanks!

got a old computer that im trying to sort out.

its running windows xp

i have adjusted the resolution and everything is either so large you cant realy focus on it properly or it seems like the actual screen has got a magnifine glass on it, i have to push the mouse to the edge of the screen to see what else is there.

does anyone know how to fix this???

(adjusting resolution doesent work i have already tried it.)

A:how do you adjust the screen size without haveing to scroll round the screen

When you mentioned that you've adjusted the resolution, I'm presuming that you mean the adjustment in the PC by means of the control panel > display. If this is what you have done with no joy, why don't you try the adjustments on the monitor. All monitors have adjustment controls but they all differ in the way that you gain access to it,.. just have a look at the front of the monitor just below the screen,.. there should be a knob or dial that is pushed or turned to scroll through the adjustment menu. Another suggestion is to try another monitor,.. they are quite cheap for second hand units, maybe $10 to $20.

I'm using my mother's Toshiba Laptop while I am visiting.  I placed a link to Outlook on the Favourites Bar so I could get to my emails.
From that, I placed a Shortcut on the desktop.
When I open Outlook from the Favourites Bar, it opens full screen.
If I open it from the Desktop, from the shortcut icon, I get a screen that is @ 2/3 of a screen, that I then have to maximise to read.
From memory in the long distant past, I had this issue before with W7 when I used it but I can't remember how to fix it.

Pulling the screen out to the edges, then using "Exit" instead of  X, doesn't fix the issue.

Anyone got any idea how to stop this and have it open full screen every time?
thanks
Hoges

A:Outlook opens in 2/3 screen size, not full screen.

Hi Hoges This kind of issue is always tiring, because you don't know what will work in order to fix it. To be honest, there's no "actual" fix to that, it really depends of the system, program used, etc. There's a few tricks mentionned in the thread below for that issue, if you want to give them a try:https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie8-windows_vista/how-to-make-internet-shortcut-open-maximized/b2a0b8ae-ce6d-47bb-99fc-7080e88ccac3To be honest, the one that might work the best is the shortcut of the browser that opens directly on the website, and where you'll check the Run Windows Maximized box.

My laptop suddenly has a black bar on the right side (about four inches of black) and a thin band of black (about an inch) on the bottom. It's as if the entire screen just got smaller and shifted up a little and over to the left. The area of the screen I can work in is now much smaller. I can't do anything in the black areas, not even move the cursor into them. Also, Start button has a smeared blue streak on the bottom of it which extends to the bottom of the screen. Everything else seems to be functioning properly.

I have checked the screen resolution and it says 1024x768. The only other option it allows me to change it to is 800x600. I'm not very tech savvy, but can find my way around a computer with clear instructions.

Here is my lapto's info:
OS Version: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium , Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6400 @ 2.00GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10

Motherboard: Quanta, 3602, 02.22, CNF91624Q5
Antivirus: Webroot AntiVirus with Spy Sweeper, Updated and Enabled

A:Screen size shrunk! Thick black bar on right of screen!

I would recommend updating your video card driver from here.

You could also try: Right click on the desktop and then click on screen resolution and then change the resolution to something different and then change it back to 1024x768.

I hope this helps,

JB

I went to SSDs on all of my computers some time back, but I still use WD RE4s and 2.5 inch WD Black HDDs for a variety of backup tasks and for storage in which the data will not be accessed for a period longer than is ideal to use a non-powered SSD for. On my Macs I am using El Capitan with OS X Journeled, GUID map, and FileVault 2 encryption. On my SP3 and desktop I am using NTFS with Win 10 64-bit Pro with BitLocker enabled on both machines. The OS and third party programs are currently up to date.

I've generally used ExFAT and the GPT partition map because it allows me to use it on all of my computers, and I have always used the default cluster size. However, I do not think the default size was the best decision for me because the size on disk is over TWICE the actual size.

If I am correct, the default Win 10 cluster size is 4k, and that going BELOW that is useful for the drives I have many smaller files on. Is this correct? Additionally, the smaller cluster size I go, the slower the drive will write, correct? Also, if so, how low do you advise going? I am still torn between reformatting outright or trying one of the programs that allows changes to a currently in-use drive. Any advice? Thanks!

A:Hard drive cluster size issues? Size on HDD over twice the actual size

For the a sector size of 4k to double your disk utilization you'd have to have a really tiny average file size. From your numbers shown the average size if I calculate it correct is 132kb (unless you have 1 massive file and 17,711 tiny ones) so a 4k size will make no difference.

You could check with TreeSize Free - it will tell you if you right click on the status bar and select it to be displayed.

EDIT - having checked the default for ExFat is 128k for drives over 32GB (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/140365) and when I tried to format an external USB drive that is what it picked. According to macbook - Reformat exFat with specific Device Block Size and Cluster Size - Ask Different OSX picks 128k also.

So if you had 128k as your cluster size minimum disk utilization would be 17,772 files * 128k = 2.17GB. So if all your files were just over this (say 132k which looks like your current average size) you would be using 4.44GB add a couple of big files and it could easily be 6GB.

I would check your average file sizes and also your current cluster size (you can use chkdsk as described in the AskDifferent link above).

The default is 4k for NTFS and I have always formatted ExFat as 4k also. Depending on your current setting reformatting 4k looks like a good idea.

As for how - copying the data elsewhere, formatting and then copying it back has to be the easiest, safest and most likely fastest way. You'll also get the disk defragmented automatical... Read more

Okay, So I've had this computer for 4 1/2 years, it actually runs pretty good still. I wanted to extend it's life a little longer and get rid of some clutter so I formated my hard drive and was going to reinstall Windows XP.

The "Recovery CD's" that I have for my system aren't working. I don't know why. So I used another copy of XP that I had and it's all up and running now. Only problem, the monitor drivers are on the Recovery CD's and now I'm stuck with a 800x600 screen resolution on a wide screen monitor.

The specs I have, give the monitor as being 15.3" wide. I don't know where this number came from. Here's what I got from actually measuring:

13.25" : 7.75"
(1.7 : 1) or (16 : 9.4)

So the closest standard screen resolution for this is (1280×768) I think, which is a ratio of
(16 : 9.6)

*NOTE* This is a built in Monitor. It's a Desktop/Laptop Hybrid of sorts.

And yes, I have checked my Display Properties, it only lets me select 800 by 600 pixels, I can't slide the bar down or anything.

So how do I "stretch" my screen resolution out?

Thank You to anyone who can help me out with this.

I have Win 7 Pro with a 24 inch LCD monitor and in a number of programs the screen is too large and some of the lower buttons needed to fully operate the program features are not fully visible and unusable. I have investigated Display Size Settings and find that the resolution is set at the recommended value of 1920x1080 in landscape.

There does not appear to be any way to reduce the screen size - for example by increasing the screen resolution to a value greater than the recommended setting.

Any one have suggestions on how I might reduce screen size in those programs that are affected by screen size?
TIA,

Frank

Double check your DPI scaling level for your display to make sure it's set to 96 PDI (100%). Increasing the size of the DPI will make items appear larger.

I am using XP with service pack 2 on a compaq monitor.. The screen size is bigger than the monitor and I can't get to the toolbars or the start menu and it bows in in the center of the sides like a carnival mirror. I reset the screen resolution to the lowest number and that helped initially, but it stretches out again. the front of the monitor has 3 buttons you can adjust, but the changes don't seem to stay for very long. This is not the biggest problem in the world, but I sure would like to know if there is a simple fix.

A:screen size changes

If this is a CRT monitor the adjustments you are looking for are on the monitor itself not in Windows.. The front for buttons and knobs and you will see how to adjust screen size as well as the bowed edge. If they aren't 'staying' then you may be looking for a new monitor in the near future. To make sure it's not the video card if you have a friend that would let you borrow a monitor for a day or so you can see it things hold on it and that will let you know it's the monitor. Good luck

Hi group, I have recently gone onto "Windows 7" for my sin's - at least I understood X.P. (well better). On opening any window the screen appears just one third of the available screen height, like cinemascope! I can then maximise it in the normal manner to achieve full screen, but why does it always come on in "minimise" mode. May be this is a characteristic of "Windows 7"?

When I go into properties and try to change it, the monitor goes blank for 30-40 seconds then comes back on, unchanged.

Nothing fancy about either the computer or the monitor. I've never had this happen before.

Sounds like your zoom level is set too high.

How To reset browser level to 100% Windows 7

Press Ctrl-0. However, you may find that 100% does not leave enough fuzziness for Clear Type to interpolate with. So, I like to use 112%, e.g. by pressing Alt-x Z C 112. It may not be so important on W7 but in W8 it is essential at least on wide-screen LED monitors.

In Internet explorer you can use these shortcuts. Other browsers are similar.

CTRL +(plus) Zoom In
CTRL + (minus) Zoom Out
CTRL + mouse scroll wheel

Hope this helps,

My mom bought her husband a new computer and got one of those 17 in. plasma flat screens (which is 2 in. bigger than the one we have) but for some reason I can't get his webpage browser to fit everything on the screen like ours does, Even if he maximizes the page he still has to use the left/right scroll bar to see things that he can see with out that scroll bar on our computer. Both computers are the same os (windows xp) same type and come from the same place (dell dimension) but I can't figure out how to change his computer so that it is like ours when viewing web pages. Any suggestions?

I recently bought my wife a laptop. Toshiba satelite p205-s6347. It came with Vista Home Premium. SHe has a problem that occurs when she is using internet explore. It does not seem to matter what she is doing or what she clicks on but the windo seems to randomly jump from full screen to a smaller size. It happens when she is playing euchre on line, hotmail, or just about anything else. she will left click and the screen size changes. It is a very nice laptop but this is driving here crazy. I watch her and she doesn't appear to be doing anything out or the normal.

Yesterday I had an "illegal operation" message and had trouble getting it off the screen. Shut down the computer correctly.
Today when I powered up, I cannot get Windows 98 to fill the entire screen. I have black margins on three sides -- 1" left and right and 1/2" inch on top. I reloaded the driver for the monitor, but that didn't work. Usually if this happens, it corrects itself when I shut down and restart, but that's not working today. Need help as this is driving my vision crazy.

A:Monitor Screen Size

Although this could be something entirely different, it's worth a mention. When I installed a Voodoo card in my machine I had black margins around my sceen, none of which we're even - this was corrected eventually by using the controls on the front of your monitor to stetch up and down, left to right and then centre - even if this isn't the cause, perhaps it'ss do untill you get the correct reply.

I use MS Outlook 2000. With my Inbox open, when I click on "NEW" to compose a new e-mail, the resulting new screen only opens in a space of about 3" by 3" If I click on maximize the screen enlarges to what it should be. If I drag the corners of the box and make it larger all is well. But the very next time I want to compose mail the same 3" by 3" box appears. How do I get this new email box to open at full page or thereabouts, each and every time?

LCD Monitor 2434Pw-AOC LCD Monitor Australia & New Zealand
Just purchased this monitor with a new system. It says it is capable of 1920x1080 resolution. I set it to that resolution, then found that the screen size shrunk by 2 or 3 cm on ALL sides (not just 2, I think it's 16:9 screen ratio). This same thing also happened when I booted from acronis disk director off a CD. The wierd thing is, however, that it works at full screen size when I have it at 1600x900 (or something in the 1600s).

last night I was switching between to websites, so I shrunk both screens so both were visable on the screen at the same time. That was fine. Now, when I open just one screen, it opens as a small screen and I have to maximize to full screen! What an I do to make it open at full screen on opening???

A:Screen size on opening

Open the screens, one at a time, place your cursor on the edge of the screen, it will turn into a double arrow. Left Click and hold. Drag the screen open to the size you want and drop it. Do the same for both horizontal and vertical sizes.
After you have it sized the way you want, close the screen and open it again. It should be as you left it.

I have XP Pro SP/3 with Malwarebytes 2.0.2.1012. My monitor is about 11x14" and I like the 800x600 pixel setting the very best (others are too small).  The Malwarebytes screens are too large & will not re-size. I have tried smaller settings and can then size the Malwarebytes screen on top or bottom, but not on the sides.  I go back to the 800 x 600 & the top & bottom are ok, but the sides are still off the screen.  I have searched diligently & used M'bytes help to no avail.  Does anyone have a solution?  I do not want to change the 800x600.  Yes, I am a very experienced computer user, and also very elderly.Edit: Moved topic from Windows XP to the more appropriate forum.~ Animal

I don't know what started it but suddenly whenever I decrease the resolution on my computer it shrinks the screen instead of increasing the pixel size. This typically manifests itself in older games that have an 800*600 resolution. Instead of filling up the whole screen it displays a large black area around the shrunken screen. Additionally, when I change the windows resolution from my the default 1280*800 to something smaller it creates a black border around the screen. Help?

Have you tried accessing game options from the main menu? There should be display options that have screen resolution among them.

That's it's programmed size. It's windowed.

But the real question is what someone would need to use it that often for. It is really for diagnostics. Few things there should be changed, and startups that are safe to change are more easily managed with a startup manager. Services should never be changed there, but in the services console.

Making changes means that you are always in "selective" startup mode.

i got a new laptop a month or so ago, but since using it the screen is doing my head in. it keeps flicking from filling the whole screen to having a black bar about 1 or 2 inches wide on either side and everything on the screen then fills only that area, not even the cursor can go in the black sides.

my tabs on google crome also get smaller, for example, the twitter tab when the screen is big will say twitter/home with a little gap after and when it is small only twitter/ho will fit. it happens constantly no matter if i'm touching the laptop or not. the screen will go back then swap size. however, if i'm typing it will carry on during the balck screen that's on for like half a second, but the cursor will go back to being in the middle. sometimes it can be like 15 mins between size changes, but sometimes it like happens about 10 times within 30 seconds.

i checked the screen resolution but when i change that the font just gets bigger, and thats not the problem.i get a message each time it changes saying...

Do I need to get the O.S. boot structure to include the Dell video driver??
Do I need to update BIOS?

Also my second Question...
A couple of the Laptops gave me an error after the O.S. and drivers are installed. Invalid system configuration information
Time-of-day not set......

I get this message on the ones I have configured with no Battery..{There on the way}
I just configured it with the ac adaptor....
I set the time in the os and bios but then put them on the shelf for a day, and then I boot em up and I get this error...I press f1 and the os loads fine......

Is the clock not holding because it relys on a battery in the bay?????
Or do I have to worry about that little battery pack by my Ram Slot inside the laptop goin?

Check the Fn keys usually there is something on there to resize the screen. As well just try fiddeling with the resolutions you set it at. Native is ALWAYS by far the best. I am not familiar with the make and model but I know with the IBM's if you set the resolution to a "non standard" resolution then they had this same bootup effect. I.E. Native resolution is 1024x768 and the user sets it to 800x600 then the user got the bios and bootup with a band on it.

...and I can't figure out how it happened or how to fix it.

While browsing a web site, Pinterest, I went from one recipe screen to a second and noticed that the screen size had changed. It got larger and I can't see the entire page as before. I tried other web pages and found the same problem, the screen size had somehow been changed. I've checked the screen resolution and it's the same, 1024 X 768. All my non-web screens, excell, word, etc. are fine and haven't been changed, just web pages.
I ran AVG to see if there might have been a virus and it found nothing. Ran Malwarebytes and it found nothing. Did a CClean and that didn't help either. As a last resort even tried restoring back to 2 days before the problem occured. Still didn't correct it.
Other than changing the screen resolution at the control panel is there somewhere else for changing the screen resolution for web pages?

Hello to all,
Been away for awhile but I never forget to come back to where the knowledge and help really lies.
Anyway, I had to reinstall Windows XP on my son's Dell Dimension desktop. Everything seemed to go well with the install but I can't get the proper resolution on the monitor. Right now the icons are large and the Settings tab under Display in the Control Panel shows me its 640 x 480. I tried to simply move the slider to the right to change the size but the following occurs: when I hover the pointer on the slider it lights up but if I hold down the left mouse key to do a simple "drag" it won't let me. I tried rebooting but that didn't seem to make any difference. During the install I remember a message coming up asking if I wanted Windows to handle the resolution issue "Yes" or "No" and I responded "Yes" which I'm beginning to think locked me out of being able to manipulate the slider. Just a guess.....frustrating though, I need to resolve this so I can load the CD-ROM for my Internet service which won't load because it tells me the screen size is not enough to display all the info or something. Can you help?

Regards,
Pete C.

if your icons seem bigger than before, it could be that the resolution has been lowered. Try right clicking on the desktop then click properties. Under settings, move the slider for resolution to 1024x768.

If you have software installed for your video card, there may be an option for that instead.

About a week ago, I left my computer on all day for it to download a big file. When I returned that night, I noticed immediately that something was wrong. The screen had gained a greenish tint to it and the whole thing had shrunk and there was a thick black border around all of it. I played with the monitor controls and was able to enlarge the screen so that the content fit the monitor and changed the monitor colors so that it showed a normal setting. I thought that had fixed it, but went I restarted the computer, the opening sequence was in a shrunken state until it reached the blue windows loading screen and the desktop, where it was the size I had set it to with the monitor. I thought that it might be a problem with the monitor, so I hooked up my laptop but it what working just fine. So after finding that the problem was with my computer, I played with the resolutions and tried playing some of my fullscreen games. In both cases, the screen switched back to the shrunken state. It was a different size depending on the game or resolution, but it didn't fit the monitor like it was supposed to. I noticed that the black outline has the same appearance as the screen turned off. Not an illuminated black, like the first part of the opening sequence, but the lifeless black of a turned off screen. I went through the computer's troubleshoot guides and read some other posts and thought it might have something to do with and outdated or broken driver and/or card, but I thought... Read more

I use Firefox, and it's page fits on my Desktop quite well when it opens.

Also, I can move it around by grabbing the bar on the top. And can re-size O.K. when I want.

But for my MS WORD and Excel, they open up and totally take up the entire visible screen.
Also, I cannot do any dragging by trying to grab the top bar.

If I go to minimize by clicking on the "-" button on the top right, the screen totally disappears.

Any thoughts on how to have Word and Excel, and a few others, just open up so that they don't take up all
the real estate, and that I can re-size, and also how to be able to grab them to move around
and re-position ?

Thanks,
bob

Yesterday I turned on my desktop PC and the desktop screen, all the icons and the toolbar was much larger than they have ever been before. I have searched the forums and they all say to change the screen resolution. I have checked this and it is 1024 x 768 and the dpi is 100% at 96. I have tried clicking the desktop and scrolling the mouse back too but nothing has worked. Another forum suggested upgrading the graphics driver which I did but that just made it worse so I uninstalled that. I also did a System Restore and that didn't work either.

Any help or advice please? This is getting very annoying, especially as I don't know what I did to get this problem.

Many thanks.

I just updated my dell inspiron 8000 laptop from windows ME to windows XP Home, but the webpages are TOO big for my 14 inch screen. I guess XP thinks I have a 15 inch screen. Could someone please tell me how to change the size of my screen?

Thanks.

Good Morning,

Easy one I hope. In the lower right hand corner of my screen I could set my screen size, 100%, 125%, 150%, 200% and so on. For some reason I cannot seem to do that now, or even see the area to click on to do it. Does anyone know how to get it back? Thanks,

I recently installed windows xp pro on a Dell Lattitude CPi A366XT laptop with 64 MB of RAM. Shortly after, my screen size shrunk to approx. 6 inches by 5 inches giving me a black border for the rest of the screen! My screen resolution was set at 800 X 600. If I set the screen resolution to 1024 X 768 I get my full screen back except when I play any games. I've updated my video driver (Neomagic MagicGraph 256AV) but didn't help. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

hey lots of times this happens. I do not have a laptop but i do know why your games are not 1240X1208 or watever size you want them. Simply changing the siz of your screen in windows does not usually effect the size of a game. You should open your game and try to go to options or settings and resize your game. What game is it? some games do not have resize options.

Hello,

I am working on creating a website and would prefer to use my laptop. My laptop is a 17" widescreen. When I create on it, and then compare to a desktop regular monitor, things are not in the same place.

Someone mentiond to me I can adjust my laptop screen so it doesn't take p the entire widescreen. It can look more like a regualr monitor. Is that accurate? Can i do this? If so how?

I have a Toshiba Qosmio G45-AV690 w/ Windos Vista Ultimate if that helps

Thank you

How do you make this screen size fill out the entire monitor?

A:Screen size too small

Right click a blank space on the Desktop/Properties/Settings and drag the Screen Resolution bar to the right to increase the resolution. If it won't let you, then you need to install an updated Display Driver from your computer manufacturer or Video Card manufacturer.
