Hyper-V Error Adding Virtual Switch - Ethernet Port Bind Failed

Q: Hyper-V Error Adding Virtual Switch - Ethernet Port Bind Failed

Hi All,

Getting a strange error with Hyper-V on Windows 8 Pro x64.

When I try and add a virtual switch I get:

Error Applying Virtual Switch Properties Changes
Failed while adding virtual Ethernet switch connections.
Ethernet port '{a bunch of stuff}' bind failed: The data is invalid.

There doesn't seem to be much on google that relates to this (in particular the bind failed: the data is invalid part).

Anyone have a clue what the cause might be?

A: Hyper-V Error Adding Virtual Switch - Ethernet Port Bind Failed

can be many thing, in 3 or 4 years that I'm using Hyper-V I never encounter it, you need some networking knowledge to play with virtual switch, but usually 0x8007000D error are due to files corruption or permissions, try to run hyper-v management as admin.

I've had this problem for quite some time, and I really don't understand what's going on. I try to set up an apache server on my computer to help test my web designs, only it won't open now. I've checked the port(80), and nothing seems to be attached to it(it says "Listening").

I did a little research and there was something about the host and the virtual host trying to bind to the same port, but I don't think that's the problem either because the host binds to 80 and the virtualhost is set to 443(in the httpd.conf anyway). I would really like to fix this.

A:Apache OS 10013 Error (Failed to bind to port)

Assuming you are doing this on a Windows computer I am betting IIS is somehow interfering.

As a test or work around try setting your apache configurationg file to listen on port 8080.
See if you can connect to it using the urlort

Hi this is my first post but I am really confused as to an issue with hyper-V

Whenever I go to open the virtual switch manager, it says; The operation on computer 'DESKTOP-V1A0142' failed: Generic error. Is there anyway to fix this. I have not yet created any switches because it won't let me.

A:Hyper-V error when creating virtual switch.

Hi Nukeproof, welcome to the Ten Forums.

First thing to check is that the Hyper-V Extensible Virtual Switch is enabled in your NIC's Properties:
If it is totally missing click the Install button and install, it, you'll find it under Protocol:
Install if needed, enable it and reboot and try Virtual Switch Manager again.

Everytime I restart my PC, the connection on my host PC doesn't work.
The network connection on the Virtual machines still work.

I have to disable the Virtual Switch, then check all the settings for my Ethernet connection which says it's disabling everything. Then enable the Virtual Switch and now everything is working.

Any reason I have to do this after every restart? below are the settings when I first start up the host computer.

A:Hyper V Virtual Switch

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

Hello all,
I'm learning windows phone 8, and I want to run the windows phone 8 simulator on my PC ( OS windows 8.1 pro ), but the simulator can not run because it can not create the virtual switch in Hyper-V, and I also can not do it manually .
This is the error when I create the new virtual switch.

After this, my main network adapter (ADSL) is disconnected, and this is it's properties :

I must unstick the hyperV option to make it connect to internet again.
And this is the properties of new virtual adapter nothing happen if I stick the hyperV option like the above picture )

I have read many post from google, but I still haven't created virtual switch . And now in my computer I have ~ 20 virtual network adapter which can not run, and can not be deleted .

( I can not run on real window phone device because the connection between phone and PC is disconnected and connected rapidly >"< , so I must run on the simulator )
Could anyone help me .

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Hyper-V enabled. When I had Windows 8 I could install a Virtual switch with out any problems, since upgrading I can not install a Virtual Switch with External or Internal settings.

Not sure if this is relevant or not but when I look at the Ethernet properties never "Hyper-V Extensible Virtual Switch" or "Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Protocol" are ticked. I have tried ticking them but get the error message "Could not add the requested feature. The error is: The data is invalid". I have checked that I am using the latest and correct driver for the card.

Any help gratefully received.

A:Can not install Virtual Switch external in Hyper-V

I think it is a hardware problem - when I switch on the computer today there was no internet connection. Looking in the Device Manager there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the Broadcom Netlink and the message says "this device cannot start (code 10).

I will get a network card and see what happens!

I have a Win8-64 system hosting a Win8-32 VM. A physical Wifi adapter provides Internet sharing, and a virtual switch provides Internet access to the guest VM via "internal network".

However, the Win8-64 host seems to be confused as to which adapter provides Internet access. If I delete the virtual switch, the Wifi adapter works fine. If I create a virtual switch, the system works initially fine with both host and guest accessing the internet. However, on wake-from-sleep the host loses Internet access while the VM still retains access!

My "layman diagnosis" is that the virtual switch bypasses somehow the host. I am getting rather desperate about this behavior, and I haven't been able to find any advice via Google. Can somebody enlighten me on how to instruct the host to always poll the physical adapter for Internet access?

many thanks in advance!

A:Weird Hyper-V virtual switch behavior

I should mention that of course I could connect the VM through an "external network". But then I would have two different IP addresses for guest and host - which is OK in my home network, but horrible anywhere else. In a hotel, I would have to buy two access codes for guest and host! Hence, NAT is my only viable option.

May I ask why you would like to enable the Hyper-V Extensible Switch? It is needed only when you have created Hyper-V virtual network switches, which your screenshot clearly shows you have not done. Even then it does not need to be manually enabled, the Hyper-V Virtual Switch Manager does that for you, disabling everything else in your native physical network adapter's properties, only enabling the Hyper-V Extensible Switch.

Screenshots from my PC showing how the properties are set when an external virtual switch has been correctly set up. Notice that these changes have been automatically made by the Hyper-V Virtual Switch Manager, I have had no need to edit the properties manually.

The host physical NIC properties, everything else disabled, only the Hyper-V Extensible Switch enabled:

And the properties of the Hyper-V external virtual switch which at the moment takes care of my network traffic, over the Hyper-V Extensible Switch on my host NIC:

I have succesfully used a Hyper-V virtual switch connected to the wireless adapter in my laptop. All my VM's could access my LAN independently, and could get an ip address from the DHCP server. This means, AFAIK, that my wireless adapter can and does opererate in promiscuous mode.

This worked up to build 10586. Today, I upgraded to build 11102, and this setup no longer works. It appears that wifi adapters are simply not supported with Hyper-V virtual switches. Bummer.

When you try to configure a wifi adapter in a virtual switch, it is not simply grayed out, or otherwise made impossible, but it tries to go ahead and then gives an error message (see attachment)

This does not make sense. There is no other bridge or switch configured.

I found two work-arounds:

- configure the wired ethernet adapter to the virtual switch, and create a bridge connection between the wired and the wifi adapters. For me this does not work, because I get an other error trying to create the bridge connection, which I will report in an other thread.

- use ICS. This works, but has the huge disadvantage of having a NAT layer between the VM's and the rest of my network.

Has anyone experimented with this, too?

A:Wifi adapter no longer supported in Hyper-V virtual switch

I am now at build 14257. I am still not able to create a virtual switch which connects to my wireless adapter.

Could use a little bit of help on this one...the guy at BB talked circles around my head when i asked how to set this up.....i have a DLink EBR2310 router that is currently all used up by 3 PCs and the XBox....i wanted to add the one lone printer to it so the kids can use it off of their pcs.....everything is hard wired to the router.....Question ...How do i hook up this Dynex 5 Port Ethernet Switch to the Router and where do all the cables go in what order???? again the guy at Best Buy talked circles around me.....Thanks all

A:Adding Ethernet Switch

You would disconnect one ot the PCs from the router. Then connect an ethernet patch cable between the disconnected port on the router to a port on the Dynex switch. Then plug the PC into the switch. If the printer is a networked printer, also plug it into the switch.

I recently purchased a NAS Drive which works ok. However I have also found out that my Sky Hub only supports <100Mbps.

The problems I have is when copying to the NAS drive I only get write speeds of around 10-12MBps which sounds about right being around 1/8 of the 100Mbps. Also when I stream I get a lot of buffering/cut out with any HD content streaming to my Xbox 360.

I just wanted to know if unplugging everything from the router and into a gigabit Ethernet switch then connecting that to the router will speed everything up? Or would I be better off going all out on a pricey router?

Basically am I right in thinking the switch will bypass the router for anything not using the internet?

I am attempting to add a Cisco (Linksys) SRW224G4 24-port Managed Switch to my network, but everytime I attempt to install it I lose connectivity to my entire network...

Currently we have the following:
Linksys RV016 firware/vpn router
2 SRW224G4 24-port Managed Switch that are connected to the network (setup before I joined the company).

I tried to connect a cable from the switch to port on Linksys RV016 but no success. I also, tried to connect a cable from one of switch one to switch 2 (not sure if I should be doing that) but still no success.

The instructions that came with the switch don't provide any way of setting up, it just lists info about the configuration and what each settings means.

Can anyone assist?

A:Adding a 3rd Linksys SRW224G4 24-port 10/100 switch to my company network

Do you get a link light when you connect devices to the switch? By default, these SMB managed switches should all ship with all ports set up on VLAN 1 and all interfaces in a non-shutdown state. Have you logged into the web interface for the switch to see what is going on?

I have a Linksys WRT54g wireless router. I use one of the LAN (wired) ports for one of my desktops. However, the other day, the first LAN port died on me. I was surfing the net, when the computer told me that a network cable has been unplugged. I checked the connections, but the problems persisted.

I then moved the cable to the next LAN port over on the built in switch, and that one worked. This leads me to believe that the first LAN port has failed.

What should I do about this? Do you think Linksys would provide me with a new one?

When I add a virtual switch the host's network dies. Basic W8-64 setup with Intel DH87RL MB with I217-V Ethernet adapter. Play by play:

Observe Host's network functional.Create new external Virtual Switch "VS1ex" with defaults on . I have read several instructional articles and tried a variety of things but all seem to suggest it should work like this but as you can see in step 3 I'm off the air on just the host. I've also read dozens of forum threads with a similar problem but none of the suggestions offered worked for me. At the moment my work-around is to make it an internal adapter and bridge on the host. This works but I am not satisfied with a work-around. Does anyone have an idea how I can make this work?

Hi, guys.

When I want to install certain programs, there is a set of error messages that makes the installation fail. They're as follows:

"c:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll initialization. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

If I push "ignore" then this message appears:

"c:\Windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the application."

I have a feeling that this is caused by a Norton antivirus program I installed couple years ago that I had a heck of a time removing. Could there be a chance that some parts of the program is still lingering to cause this?

I've been having this problem for the longest times and threw away a bunch of software because I simply couldn't install them. It's soooo frustrating. Please help!

This is driving me crazy. Everything I search for doesn't come up with the right answer. I have two Hyper-V VMs and I want to run them both full screen and switch between them easily. At present I have to exit the VM into the host OS and back into the other VM which then is not full screen. Any ideas ? Many thanks. Gary

A:How do you switch between Hyper-V VMs with a hotkey ?

On a single display system there's no way to do that. On dual / multiple display systems you can use ALT + TAB by first making a display not currently showing a full screen vm active, then switching task with ALT + TAB.

The same can be done on dual / multiple display systems easy and fast using the Task View button.

I have an ethernet cable run in my house. What I need to figure out is if there is such thing an ethernet switch that does not require a power source. (or something that can get this situation resolved)

Here is my situation:
I have a cable ran to my basement, and have a bedroom directly above the basement that needs an ethernet run. It is not possible for me to run a completely new cable from the original starting point, so I was somehow hoping to use the cable going to the basement, put a head on it, put it into a switch/hub/splitter and run a cable out of it to the room directly above, and use the other cable coming out to stay in the basement.

Is there something that can do this for me? Is there a better way to do so? What would you suggest? Thanks!

Hello, 2 months ago I built a new machine with a Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 7 motherboard and Intel Core i7 4790K. It is running Windows 8.1.

I have virtualization enabled in BIOS and Hyper-V disabled but, in some machines on VirtualBox or VMWare, i can't set it to use 8 cores instead the 4 physical ones. In other, it allows me to use it. At this time I could only set it to use 8 cores in a Windows 7 VM in VMWare.

I checked CPU capabilities with coreinfo and it says Hypervisor is disabled and the other two options are OK.

Did I forget to change some setting or something? I can't understand why sometimes work and sometimes not.

VMware Workstation 11 in the VMware settings for the VM you cans et the nr of processors - I think 32 is the max. !!! You don't need to set it in the Virtual (or HOST) Bios. Use the settings in the VM.

Hey guys

Was just wondering. If I have a Licensed Server 2012 R2 running 3 Hyper-V machines, can I use 3 NEW, never activated OEM Licenses for Windows 7 Professional to activate on the virtual machines?

Under the FAQ OEM licensing it says that it can be used for 1 install of either Physical or Virtual.

Q.Can I install OEM software on a virtual machine (VMware)?

A. You can install OEM software in a virtual environment as long as you have a separate license for each instance of the software. It is fine to use the OEM version as long as it is properly licensed. To be clear, a separate version of the
software must be installed for both the ?standard? and ?virtual? installations.

Please advise.

I am preparing to go to Windows 8 but I teach a lot of workshops. Most of the time in the workshops, my students use virtual images that I build.

If I build an image on Win8 in hyper-v, will my students be able to run this image on their Win7 boxes? They will be 32bit images. If they can't, I'm pretty much hosed since I have to be able to provide images that can be run on Win7 for quite a while.

A:Run Win8 Hyper-V image on Win7 Virtual PC

Hi there
I believe Hyper-V images Can be converted back to VM's that Virtual PC can handle on the W7 boxes - but it's a task as far as I can see that is NOT for the fainthearted.

Threads from THIS Forum should put you on to the right track.

Migration from MSVS 2005 to Hyper-v and the reverse

Test the VM's yourself though on a W7 box --remember also that VMware and Vbox products can't run on W8 while HYPER-V is enabled and the reverse is true too.

Here's how to convert to VMware type vm's too -- this could be a better idea than virtual PC since VMware player is FREE and reliable so the client W7 machines shouldn't have any problem installing VMware player.

Convert Hyper-V to VMWare - Blog

Converting the SharePoint and Office 2010 Information Worker Virtual Machines to VMWare from Hyper-V ? Geoff Varosky's Blog

Good luck with it -- please post how you got it to work if it all turns out OK. There are tools around from converting one virtual image to another -- but you won't simply be able to take the HYPER-V virtual machines and boot them up into Virtual PC just "as is".

After i updated to Windows 8.1 Enterprise from Windows 8 Enterprise, Hyper-V does not function correctly.
When I add an iso image to a new virtual server or start one of my existing, I can see the iso file is loaded in the bottom thumbnail.

But when I connect to the virtual server it just says: Connecting to virtual server... and it times out after 5minutes.

All my virtual servers are running locally, they are able to start and are running fine, I just cannot connect to them.
Also the ability to turn virtual servers off tends to hang and I have to kill the processes and restart the services for it to stop.

Does anyone know of a workaround for this problem?

Upgraded my win 7 pro that had virtual XP mode to win 8.1 pro. Everything from Win 7 came with it including my install programs. Noticed the virtual xp file .vmcx is there but can't access it. So I installed Hyper-V and got to the point of connecting to Virtual Hard Disk. Noticed it creats a .vhdx file. I assume this would be a new file with nothing I had on my old .vmcx file. How do I get my old virtual files over to the new one?

If I can't would I be able to install the virtual file that I got from Microsoft's website, WinXpVirtual6.1KB958559x64RefreshPkg.msu (it included a license key), or I need to have another installation disk that has Windows XP with a license key?

Hi There

I am using windows 10 Pro, and had a virtual machine installed using Hyper-V with two virtual HDD in that VM.

Recently I had some problem with my Windows 10 OS and had to reset my windows with keeping all the files and settings, and it installed a new windows 10 for me, and also I cleaned the old windows folders.

Now the problem is, the old virtual hard disk space still showing as used within my current disk space,
Total HDD capacity: 500gb
Total current file size: 30.9 gb
Free space: 342gb only!!!

The reset of the space was allocated to virtual machine in my previous windows installation, and is there any way that I can delete the VHD and have the space into my current disk space?

Your advice is highly appreciated

Thank you

A:Virtual Hard disk created in hyper-v

That 2nd picture only shows the size of directory d8e6.... not the whole drive. The whole drive you have used ~120GB as shown in top picture.

Try downloading Treezize free and run as administrator - it will show you what is taking the space and where..

By default Hyper-V disks are stored in C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks\ so probably they'll be under C:\Windows.old\Users\Public etc but it will be easier to look with Treesize.

I set up Hyper-V in my Win 10 Anniversary install and created a Win 10 Virtual Machine which is fully activated.

I tried setting up a picture password for this VM. The Picture Password option was not available but I got it to show using gpedit. I then set a Picture Password but when I reboot, the Picture Password does not show up.

Is it possible to use a Picture Password in a Hyper-V VM?

First post!

I'm trying to create a virtual USB drive to use for Windows To Go inside client Hyper-V. Is this even possible? I've attempted to create a VHD on the host (Running Windows 10 Education), setting it to offline and then adding it to the client (Windows 8.1 Enterprise)
on the SCSI controller. The client can then see, use the drive, and can be added or removed while the VM is running but when running the Windows To Go wiz it doesn't show up as an available USB drive.

If this is possible, what am I missing? I'd appreciate any help you can offer.

Same error of timed out and failing to connect shows up. I seems to hang up loading the virtual program even though in the Manager it shows loaded and ready to us. Tried several things to no success. My internet connections include a Blackberry VPN which I could form a bridge with the VS. But no internet connection from hyper-v.

So a couples of days ago my computer lost connection a few times, but it got back up running without any problems, yesterday however I had huge problems browsing trough the internet and had problems connecting to pages several times, but downloading worked just fine, but today I'm not able to do anything, it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting, but when its connected the connection is so bad that I can't access a single site.
I know it must be something wrong with my computer, because I've tested two different cables in two different ports, and I know one of the cables must work since I have no problems connecting to the internet on my Xbox 360, and all the other computers in the house have no internet problems what so ever, including the wireless connection on my laptop, and I also run into the same connection problem even in safe mode.
I noticed that the light on my ethernet port is solid orange, but usually it is green, and I've tried to do a virus scan to check if that might be the problem, but I doubt it since I haven't accessed any pages I don't usually visit in a while and it didn't find any viruses.
I have had some problems with the ethernet port before, but nothing that was permanent, I have experienced that my computer has had connection problems while everyone else in the house have had no problems, but after waiting a bit it suddenly reconnects and has worked just fine for many many months, and I've only experienced this pr... I am attempting to test ATA and have created a test DC and ATA Gateway connected to the same virtual switch on the same hyper-v host (2012R2, all recommended patches installed). I have also enabled "Microsoft NDIS Capture" on the virtual switch
and configure the DC as the source and a secondary none routable vNIC on the gateway as the destination (, no dns or gateway). All vNICs are tagged on my test vLAN (ALL traffic must be tagged on these hosts) and I fear this may be the issue. Does
Hyper-V port mirroring support tagged traffic? Is this my issue and if so how do I solve this problem.

I was initially led to this assumption due to the following link:
Which states: "Traffic generated on a VM with a vNIC set to tag traffic with a VLAN id cannot be directly monitored on another VM, unless trunking is set on the target" and then suggests running the following command: "Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan
VM3 -Trunk
-AllowedVlanIdList "100,101"
 -NativeVlanId 0"
However I tried this for my specified "Mirror" nic the gateway as well and it did not work.  It is worth mentioning that I have not yet installed the gateway and have used the Microsoft network Monitor tool in promiscuous mode
as prescribed and returned no results for LDAP or KerberosV5. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I recently did an in place upgrade to Windows 10 Pro and tried to create a free virtual machine using the provided MS development environment/build: Get a Windows 10 development environment - Windows app development
I created a internal and external virtual network adapter/switch, and after all is done attempted to either use the "Enhanced Session" or Remote Desktop Connection to enter my virtual machine. This machine seems to otherwise work fine (especially in Basic Session or when the network is set to Private instead of External or Internal), but if the audio is available and any sound attempt to trigger (in VM, to be played by host machine), it will crash.

The message just states that the connection has been lost. The Event Log on the host machine (my Win10 Pro) simply shows that the 'vmconnnect.exe' crashed with event 1000, and that there is a .Net Runtime error event 1026.
My repeated attempts to solve the issue involving looking into anything wrong with the connection setting or firewall setting revealed nothing. Internet searches also did not reveal any answers, though the closes person to have my issue also has no answer post (Windows 10 Hyper-V keep crashing - Super User).
I tried other OS for the VM as well, but all had the same issue (Win7, and Win8)

Short of the in place upgrade causing this issue, I was wondering if anyone here may be able to help me resolve this problem with the audio crashing the Virtual Machine.

I have 11 computers connected by cables to two 8 port Linksys switches then to the router. Some time ago I lost connection to six of the computers. Today a staff member purchased a Netgear 16 port switch thinking one of the switches was bad. The two switches were connected to one another with a crossover cable. We connected the computers to the Netgear switch using the cables from the Linksys switches (eliminating the two switches) and now none of the computers have internet. The ports are numbered 1-16. The instructions say nothing other than turn the switch on and plug in the cables. We use a local DSL provider. Most machines use XP, a few 2000.

Original problem is intermittent motherboard RJ-45 Ethernet socket plug,

I recently purchased a ( made in China ) CN008L USB to RJ45 Adapter dongle which came in the box with a mini CD. The software on the CD does not list WinXP 32 and the instructions ( what little are in Chinese ). The dongle is compliant with USB 1.0, and 1.1, and 2.0.
So theoretically it should work to use a USB port on the computer to connect to the old D-
Link DSL-300i ADSL Ethernet Modem thereby bypassing the need to use the intermittent
motherboard RJ-45 socket!

I downloaded upgrade drivers to allow for win XP 32 setups and downloaded the drivers but
no luck so far.

Is there any reason that I should not be able to setup and run PPPOE or other software over
the USB interface in stead of the RJ-45 Ethernet port. You people should have someone there with that "savoir faire".

To date I have not managed to find PPPOE software that pre-selects USB channel rather than RJ-45.
The setup for my wireless TP-Link 54 Mbps is connected to the USB port and works well but I did use setup disks specifically designed for that product.

I also ran a command, 'netstat -aon' and did not find a listing of 1270.0.1:80/443 or which seems to imply that nothing should be affecting port 80 or 443.

I also downloaded firefox and it cannot access the internet either. The only way I'm able to access the internet at the hotel I'm located at was to call the hotel's tech support and they had me go into the LAN settings of internet options and manually select port 8080.

So all computer in my network are working great! Sharing files/Internet

I got a new Wireless Laptop with 11g 54Mbits.
Can I add an Access Point to my Home Hub and another Access Point to my hub at work, so that my Lappy can be used wirelessly both home & work???

Or must I rethink my entire network with the use of a new ADSL Modem with router..

A:Adding a switch or router

You currently have a switch.

You can replace it with a wirelss router, go into the router settings and disable DHCP server.
Assign yourself a wireless password and security like WPA (at least) and you will have essentially the same setup, but with wireless capability.

The plug in the wall is an rj45 so i have an rj11 cable running from that to the dsl input of the router. My laptop sees the router fine but it wont connect to the net. I believe it is a configuration issue with the router (which is an netopia 3347wg).

I am lost tbh, and its quite hard to explain in a post. I can try and explain further if ye dont get me .

A:Adding a router behind a switch

on the assumption that the socket in the wall is fed from a communal router, then to
go wireless you need a wireless access point, this is like a standard hub but has wireless capability.

have a look in your router config page and see if there is anything about "wireless bridging" if there is then this will work.

A:would adding a gigabit nic and switch help

in a word, no. your internet would remain at the same speed, and your average desktop machine will not deliver much extra network performance over a gigabit connection. for network backbones, gigabit is a good idea, but for your purposes the answer is no.

No, you can use the same one for all VMs (assuming you want all to connect to internet). Windows host will also connect using this virtual switch.

ok, here's the deal

standard network;
each pc has a wallplate with 2 x rj45 sockets, one connects to the pc to allow network/internet access, all standard stuff really.
The other is required for voice, whereby the pc user just plugs their phone into it and it works, enough said.
Now the comms rack has just a 24-port data switch at present and the telephony people have just installed a live phone line and thats it.
So, what is needed to allow the 2nd rj45 port to be used for telephony (apart from phone handsets ?)
A voice panel of some sort? some kind of convertor?

Any and all advice appreciated.

A:Adding telephony to a data switch

rj 45 is not used for telephony except through voip. You will need to establish a voip service. skype, vonage, etc....

if you want standward telephony, you will need to use an rj-11 port with a telephone and a program that allows usage of the rj-11 port.

a voip setup is easier.

Instead, you might try this one: The DevCon command-line utility functions as an alternative to Device Manager

Simply download & unpack. Then open a command line in the i386 or ia64 folder of the tool. For your purpose running

devcon.exe install %windir%\inf\netloop.inf *msloop
should do the trick.
You should then see output similar to this:
Device node created. Install is complete when drivers are updated...
Updating drivers for *msloop from C:\WINDOWS\inf\netloop.inf.
Drivers updated successfully.

Now the adapter is ready to configure/use.

I'm trying to run Client Hyper-V on my Windows 8 Pro machine. I was able to successfully install the service, and can create virtual machines and hard disks on my local system. I can even start them, and see boot activity via the preview window in the MMC.
I cannot, however, connect to any machines from the local system: when I do, it hangs on "Connecting to <machinename>" for 30 seconds before it pops up with the dialog:
"Cannot connect to virtual machine. Try to connect again. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator."
Obviously, because this is Client Hyper-V, I am the system administrator, so I scour the Internet to solve my problem. I see solutions related to firewalls, administrative permissions, a few other things, and nothing has worked. I also tried creating
a virtual machine on a Windows 8 Enterprise system (which can connect to it just fine) and export it for the Pro machine to import, and I still cannot connect to it, whether the VM is registered in place or copied to the host.
Some other notes:
- None of these systems has an OS installed - two locally created ones either had no boot or booted off a Linux LiveCD, and the exported one attempted to do a PXE boot. Thus, I cannot attempt to link via Remote Desktop since the computers have no names
- Hyper-V has some other quirks on my system as well: in order to stop a virtual machine, I have to end the vmwp process - which restarts the machine - and then stop it fr... Read more

Another thought for changing my network for printer only sharing.

All things being equal, which hardware item will be better for printer sharing - Hub or Switch. I don't want to have to redo my cabling.

I understand a hub or switch will change the direction internally, so I don't have to buy any cross-over patch cables, but just plug each computer in to the hub or switch - right?

The other alternative is to buy a second cheap printer, but that entails cartridge additions at a later date.

Comments please. . .

We have several computers on a network attached to a router. My son uses his PC and plays games on line using the Xbox. Everytime he wants to switch from one to the other, he has to pull the Ethernet cable out and put it in the other unit. He isn't close to the router so its impossible to set up two separate connections. Is there anything out there that would serve as an A-B switch where he can hook up the Ethernet line to the switch, then run another two shorter wires out to the PC and Xbox. It would be nice for him to be able to go back and fourth without having to crawl behind the Xbox and attach.

Got an odd one for you, but someone might have run across it.

In addition to software security devices when accessing the Internet, I use hardware security as well. Since being disconnected from the Internet is the best possible security, I use an RJ-45 coupler in the Ethernet cable between my computer and the cable modem, keeping one or other side of the cable disconnected except when I'm actually using the Internet (downloading mail, etc.)

This is quite convenient, but the Ethernet connectors invariably break after 100 or so connect/disconnect cycles, and the cable segment has to be replaced.

The best solution, if anyone has ever seen or heard of one, would be an on/off switch designed to link two RJ-45 Ethernet cables. Not as good would be a little two-port Ethernet "hubby", such as used to be available for a while 10 or 12 years ago, with its own power supply; I could then use an ordinary 120V AC on/off switch to control the Internet connection by powering the hubby up and down. But I can no longer find any of these hubbies.

Any info on either of these devices, or suggestions of better alternative methods, would be much appreciated. Thanks.

My 64-bit Windows 8.1 Pro Update 1 computer meets all the hardware and BIOS requirements for adding Hyper-V. Nevertheless, Hyper-V fails to install.

After attempting to add Hyper-V from Control Panel my computer restarts and gets to 93% completion of the work. Then a message appears: We couldn't complete the features. Undoing changes.

Event viewer shows no errors or warnings.

EDIT - Hyper-V consists of two components: Hyper-V Management Tools and Hyper-V Platform. I decided to install each component separately.

Hyper-V Management Tools installed successfully. Hyper-V Platform resulted in the behavior I describe above.
How can I successfully add Hyper-V?

A:"We couldn't complete the features" When Adding Hyper-V

I am indebted to the Kaspersky User Forum for this solution. I use Kaspersky Internet Security 2015.

The "Self Defense" feature of Kaspersky software interferes with adding Hyper-V. Disable "Self Defense" in your Kaspersky software and you will be able to install Hyper-V.
Once installed don't forget to re-enable Self Defense!
The Kaspersky team determined that this is a bug and it will be fixed.

I had Hyper-V and Ubuntu running on Windows 8 no problem. I've since done a fresh install to 8.1, and I can no longer create an External Virtual Switch. The button for "Create Virtual Switch" is grayed out when I select "External". I can create Internal and Private switches, but not External. There's no error or message so I'm having difficulty troubleshooting. All of the tutorials I've seen don't talk about any configuration I would need to do before creating an external switch. Any ideas? I have the default Windows 8.1 firewall and antivirus stuff.

I tried creating the Virtual Switch in PowerShell with the following commands

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> Get-NetAdapter

Name InterfaceDescription ifIndex Status MacAddress LinkSpeed
---- -------------------- ------- ------ ---------- ---------
Ethernet Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller 3 Up B8-97-5A-13-7C-E6 1 Gbps

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> New-VMSwitch -Name "TestNew" -NetAdapterName "Ethernet" -AllowManagementOS $True

New-VMSwitch : Cannot find a physical network adapter named Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.

+ New-VMSwitch -Name "TestNew" -NetAdapterName "Ethernet" -AllowManagementOS $True

A:Cannot Create External Virtual Switch (Grayed out)

So I think it was the Nvidia network chipset drivers that were causing the problem. I just went into device manager, uninstalled my Realtek ethernet drivers, and reinstalled. Hyper-V can now create an external switch. Just in case anyone runs into this issue again.

Okay I now have 5 devices to compete for 4 ports on my dlink wireless g router. The new device is a gigabit network drive. I would like to upgrade my two computers nic cards to gigabit and buy either 1) a 4 port gigabit switch(cheaper option) or 2)(much more expensive) a whole new 8 port gigabit wireless-n router.

If I go with option 1(preferred because of cost and size constraints) were would be the optimal place to put the switch and what devices to connect to it to eliminate bottlenecks and improve file sharing speed?

The two computers and network drive are all gigabit connectors. The other two devices are 10/100 media controllers for streaming audio. Would I place the two computers and network drive on the gigabit switch and the other two 10/100 devices on the regular router. I do have cable internet but am running only about 15mbps download speeds. Would the switch have to be behind the router? or in front? inquiring minds would like to know...

A:Adding gigabit switch to a wireless g 10/100 router?

I have an 8 port gigabit switch connected to my router. I plug all the stuff into the switch, and just run a single wire to the router. I have another gigabit switch remotely to split out some stuff in another part of the house.

Hello Friends,

I have a win xp system which connects to internal network & Internet.
The problem I have is, for each work i need to change the IP address.

Ex: For internal network the ip should be
To connect to internet the ip should be

Now I want to be connected to both internal network as well as internet at the same time. So what should I do ?

* I can not add another physical network card.
* I can not change the IP's of any other system or config servers etc... (as it is used by our internal application, doing so will make a mess.)
* I have the admin rights so any software changes to my system can be done.

So i was hoping to add a virtual network card, and configure it to the new IP. So can that be done ? if so how ?

Will be using two desktop PC's in house for the first time now.

Have always had a hard wired Ethernet cable between Router output and the one desktop pc.

New PC coming with, apparently, some "wireless" capability.

a. Can one of the PC's be connected to the Router wirelessly (and the other thru the Ethernet cable) ?

If so, where are the Settings to do it, and how would I go about it ?

b. Or, is it better to try and set up a GigaBit "Switch", and have both PC's use it ?
Would this be better than one PC wireless, and one PC thru the Ethernet cable ?
Why ? Any caveats or gotchas doing it this way ?

hey guys i have a quick question bout a situation i have going on. the computer i am now on is hooked up into the internet via a wall ethernet jack, which is hooked into an ethernet switch (or hub i think) in another room where the cable modem is located. the tv that i play my xbox 360 on is a good 10 feet away or so, and i want to get connected onto xbox live from there.

i have an ethernet cable that is long enough to run from the xbox itself to the wall ethernet jack that the computer is hooked into.

what my question is is that if i buy another ethernet switch and hook it into the wall jack, and then from that switch run another ethernet line into the computer which is literally right on top of the jack and then another line from that switch into the xbox 10 feet away, if this will work since the wall jack itself is hooked into another ethernet switch in another room.

i can kinda guess that was kinda annoying to follow but i just wanted to explain everything to avoid confusion. help would be really appreciated . thanks guys

A:ethernet switch question

im not sure if theres a difference between a hub and a switch, but i do know that the wall jack is hooked into an 8 port linksys ethernet switch. if that helps at all
