Q: Windows 8 Games App

I can't sign out of this app. It's really bothering me because the account that's already signed in isn't the account I use in my xbox. I've tried to go to the settings then account, but there isn't a sign out button. How do I sign out of this app?

A: Windows 8 Games App

I am completely new to Windows 8 since I installed it today, and when I went into the X-Box games app, I couldn?t see any of my purchased games from GFWL, what gives? It would only seem logical or doesn?t it?

A:X-Box Games app and Games for Windows Live account merge?

Well, yeah I was hoping that would happen but at this time there is no merging yet but maybe in the future.
The Xbox games app shows your profile and scores and that is about it. I figure the reason is the games you bought are not Metro Apps which still uses a Client. Maybe the Client would be updated to Xbox Games instead since the client is not in the metro app thing.

I can say the Client works:

Hi
I was wondering about that if there's a some kind of conflict, or penalty if i want to play an original game on live (steam download) and later play another one but it's cracked. Let me explain i have some original games but i have one cracked that use games 4 windows, but i played it just offline so i don't have the need to go live with this one. The thing is that i uninstalled it long ago, but i want to play it again, so....if i install it again to play offline, would be a problem, conflict or penalty (like permanent ban or something) with my original games that i play online?
Need some answers please.

A:Cracked games conflict - Games for Windows

We can't help with cracked games.
If the game was originally registered on steam, then it is
still there.
All you have to do is install steam, login to your account and download it from "my games".

Hi,

Recently Windows has been hanging a little after closing Firefox and/or Windows Live Mail. For example, if I close Firefox or WM (Windows Mail) and click on the Start button or anything for that matter Windows will hang maybe 2 seconds before it loads it. It didn't used to do this. I've ran anti virus/spyware programs (Which returned no real threats) and Ccleaner. I've defragmented and ran check disk too so my files should be clean and in order for quick access. I actually recently had to reinstall Windows XP (32bit) so it's a pretty fresh install. As far as I know the drivers and whatnot should be up-to-date too. As for the game, it's particulary only one as I notice lags in a certain way that never had before. It's America's Army and every so often I will get this lag that will last for a few seconds and just go away. It will make the game real sluggish but only for about 4 or so seconds but gets quite annoying as this didn't used to happen before. I've tried system restore to go back to a point where I didn't think it had been doing this but none of the restore points were available for some reason and the one it did let me restore to didn't help. I don't notice any processes running that look suspicious or that shouldn't be running. I've also noticed the past few times I boot up and while loading windows my mouse will freeze for just a second which is also not normal.

I do have my CPU, ram and vid... Read more

A:Windows XP hangs a little after closing Firefox or Windows Mail and lag games.

A little update...

I ran Advance WindowsCare V2 Peronal and let it "clean and fix" everything but I still get the delay/lag after closing almost any program. For instance, I opened up Windows defrag utility, closed it and tried clocking on start and it didn't open for about 3 or 4 seconds. I don't know what's causing this but it will also slow my game mention above down like I have something else using a lot of CPU power or something for a few seconds...and this happens in the game quite often...I'd say it does it at least once every minute.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? It's very annoying and I would hate to have to reinstall Windows since I just literally got everything reinstalled and copied back over when this problem started occurring. If you need any more info or logs, let me know. Thanks.

Hello all, as you can see by the title I have a couple of problems, so I figured I would put them all into one thread to make it easier.

Okay this all started when all of a sudden windows would be deselected and if I am playing a game it would be minimized. I brang up a resource manager and saw that there was something there called System Interruptus, not sure if this has something to do with it or not?

I then went to update windows because I hadn't done it in a while, when I get error 80244022, I have tried to fix it but to no avail, I have also deleted the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder except for the ReportingEvents.log

So basically I need help with these two things, the windows being deselected and minimized is probably the most important as it is the most annoying, but I thought maybe updating windows could fix it (basically I haven't updates since installing :/)

Sorry about being so vague and not having much information but I don't know why these problems would be occuring.

Thank you in advance for your responses.

P.S. I have scanned twice with malwarebytes anti-malware since this occuring and it only picked up one virus on the first scan, and since I hardly ever torrent or anything like that I am doubting it is malware, but I'm not ruling it out as a possibility.

A:Windows being deselcted, games being minimized and windows update errors.

I just rolled back to a system restore point I had before I started having the windows being deselected and minimized issure, I have yet to see it happen but I just booted up and it always gets worse the more I use the computer so I will keppy you updated on if it fixes it or not etc.

Meanwhile if anyone has solutions to the problems would appreciate you posting them as it seems I am getting the problem again now

Hey, I have a problem, firstly here are my system specs:

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ 2.60 GHz
6.00 GB DDR3 RAM
Windows 7 64-Bit Home Premium
ATI Radeon HD 4300/5000 Series

My problem is that when I am playing games such as Minecraft or full screen games like Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike: Source, windows decides to Tab Out... When I (it just did this then) press a key it makes the noise that windows normally makes when you can't use the keyboard (I have no idea what to call the noise o.o) Windows also (it just did it again) basically makes the window look like another window is on top of it here, is basically what it looks like (on the right, I decided to put skype and chrome next to each other and click on skype which makes the top of chrome look (it just decided to do this again) like it's basically not in use, I really do not know how to describe this here is an image w/ the comparison http://puu.sh/1RDgf As you can see on the right (Chrome's top bar is abit lighter than Skypes)

This is really annoying, and I really cannot explain the reason fully, I have re installed windows once, and this does not do anything, so I am not going to try this again! I've tried in my best ability to explain this, but let me say one last thing, It basically seems like another window is popping up, but cannot be seen and this is making my games and normal windows tab out... I can tell because chrome or the game I am playing will either make the top bar look ligh... Read more

Hello,

I have 2 Windowses on my PC and I would like to play games that I have installed on W7 on W8 but there is a problem. Some games dont worked because of d3dx9 dll's and I solved it with installing DirectX , some games missed VC++/.Net. But now there are some games that still dont work. Like League of Legends didn't worked when i run it from W7 partition but when i copied it to W8 partition it worked. I don't want to do this with every game I have. Is there any solution to make them work?

Sorry for my english.

Thanks in advance.

A:Dual/Multi Boot games form Windows 7 on Windows 8

As a general recommendation you shouldnt try to run most programs that are installed on another Windows OS'es partition. some softwares need certain files, dependencies, Registry entries, etc, and if those are in your other 7 OS, then your 8 install wont be able to find everything, which may bring about errors.

The best thing you can do is either play them on 7 or uninstall them in 7 and then reinstall them in 8.

I also had the same issue when trying to run some other Windows games via WINE in Ubuntu Linux. same basic principle applies.

Hi folks

I'm having a massive headache with Games For Windows Live and - more specifically - the apparent need to update the Live ID Assistant.
The problem is that even if I run the installer from the Microsoft website as admin, it goes as if to extract the installer file, but doesn't actually do anything after that.
I've tried uninstalling the GFWL client, rebooting and reinstalling, I've tried compatibility but that isn't working either. I really do not know what the heck to do with this.
I've looked through numerous forums that have suggested uninstalling and reinstalling the client software, and some have said that the Live ID assistant doesn't need re-installing. I happen to be fairly certain that the ID assistant is a service (if I'm not mistaken), so I've looked through services.msc, and there's not a trace of it in there, so it really does need installing. I can't launch any games without it, and I've got a fair few that are just sat around doing nothing because I can't get the blasted assistant to install in the first place.
The next thing I notice is that even though I'm using Windows 8 (not 8.1, just windows 8) it tells me the update for the Assistant is for Windows 7 systems. Could that be part of the problem or have I really missed something?

Any help greatly appreciated!

A:Games For Windows Live ID Assistant update and Windows 8

Ok never mind. I managed to resolve that problem.
If only I can get Batman Arkham City to work, there's a bunch of solutions out there but none of them appear to be working for me - mostly because of the GFWL stuff I think.

Is there an issue with the 'Games for windows live' update that has been released on 13th March. It came through as part of the latest windows 'patch tuesday' updates. Every other security update installed but this one keeps failing. It says 'Windows Update encountered an unknown error' code 80070643. Repeatedly fails to install. Looking under my programs and features list it shows i have the following installed:-

Microsoft Games for Windows - Live Redistributable - installed on 13/3/12 version 3.5.92.0
Microsoft Games for Windows Marketplace - installed on 18/08/11 version 3.5.50.0

I can login to it okay but it keeps popping up as a windows update today and keeps failing. I think something is wrong with it. Anyone else?

Thanks,

This problem has occurred "somewhat"(I don't know when exactly) recently. I used to be able to play full screen games just fine but now (for some reason), everytime I launch a full screen game, it auto minimizes.

When I alt+tab back(or click the game icon on the task bar), it remaximizes the game but quickly gets minimized after a second.

Games play fine while in "windowed" mode(Warcraft 3, etc).. Full screen keeps minimizing.

I use Windows Vista Ultimate (64 bit):

Nvidia GeForce 8300(onboard video card).
I've done scans with Avast, Malware Bytes, and Super Antispyware and they all found nothing.

Three months ago(same system), full screen games played fine however I was on sort of a "full screen" gaming break, so I only recently tried playing full screen games like Warcraft 3 and this is when I encountered the "auto minimizes" problem.

The only major difference(between the time full screen games worked and now) is Avast 5. I upgraded from Avast 4.8 to Avast 5, other than that, there were no other major changes with the computer I am on.

Avast 5 is on Silent/Gaming mode, and I tried disabling all the shields temporarily to see if it would fix the issue but it didn't.

Does anyone have any ideas(or need anymore info that may help)? Any help will be appreciated, thanks.
Edit: I found a solution(though still looking if there is another way to "fix" this issue) - Right click on a program shortcut(or progr... Read more

Hello, I try to play old and new Games on the HP ZBook 15 G2 but each time between 2 - 15 minutes the Game freezes while the sound is still playing for at least 5 minutes until I can play further. It seems like the graphics card is buffering something like on a Video stream until I can continue playing. The Games work perfectly before and after this kind of game freeze. Is this a known issue? What could be the issue? Usually Games should either lag, being slower with less fps, have screen tearing, etc. but somehow buffer a Game for minutes until it works completely fine again is new to me. The same Games work on a much less performant HP 840 G1 Notebook but of course I need to turn down the graphics options depending on the Game. What is also odd it seems in general there are issues with using ALT+TAB to get to Windows while in a Game which works fine on my other PC. Hardware: Intel Core i7-4810MQ CPU, 16GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4600 and NVIDIA Quadro K2100M What I tried:I installed the latest Windows 10 64-Bit Version with all updates, used the HP Support Assistant Tool to install every Update it found. After the issue still there I later tried to install the latest Intel Graphics Driver from the Intel website (20.19.15.4483 from July 2016), the latest Nvidia Driver from the Nvidia website from the stable branch 21.21.13.7563 from October 21st 2016. Tried to disable the internal Intel Graphics Card but e.g. Battlefield 1 is then compla... Could anyone help me with this? I'll experience random, what seems to feel like, lag spikes, which aren't actually lag spikes while playing games. I'd be playing in offline mode against the computer and I'd have smooth gameplay for minutes before hitting this "lag spike" which would last minutes before it goes back to normal gameplay for a few minutes and then back to a lag spike, and this cycle would continue. This is for games that are extremely below my computer specs as well, so far, this has occurred with TF2 and alien swarm. my drivers are all updated, is this perhaps a software problem since problems with playing games only occurred once i went from windows XP to windows Vista months ago.

I just updated and rebuilt my PC and have reinstalled Win 7 64 bit and am constantly getting a BSOD while using the PC. Specifically while downloading/installing/playing games. I have also had the error occur just while surfing the internet.
From the program Blue Screen Viewer it seems to be caused by ntoskrnl.exe+7f1c0 and/or ntoskrnl.exe+7e769
I can not find any solution to fix this issue, I have updated drivers, I have ran the Microsoft memory checker, , I have changed out my memory, tried 2 other video cards, tried two different wireless network cards, now on wired connection, I even changed motherboards, got the errors on both SSD and HDD. The only things I haven't changed out is the PS and CPU, since I am using the PC to write this I am ruling out the CPU as the issue.

I have used Memtest86 and prime95 to test the memory and CPU, nothing is coming back with errors or issues. I did run driver verifier and got two .dmp files for some specific files but not sure what to do with those now. They are included in the attachement

It seems to be software/driver issue but I can not figure it out.

Any help would be great, thanks!

Does anyone know how to keep the Vista Games Explorer from automatically adding entries for games? I currently have a completely empty VGE and upon launching any of my games via double-clicking their exe, VGE creates a new entry once the game is closed. I already unchecked both "Download information about installed games" and "List most recently played games" in the VGE options window but that didn't help. I have a third party program that lets me add my own custom entries so obviously I'd like to add them manually so I have more control over fine details. I know that the automatically-created entries can be hidden after the fact, but that really clutters up the third party editor since it displays all games in its list, hidden or otherwise. Any thoughts?

Currently when I play a game the BSOD happens randomly, I can go a whole day without it, or it can happen frequently. It happens the most when I close or exit a game, then it'll kick to a blue screen.

I really appreciate what you guys do and I hope I followed all the instructions right on how to post my logs and stuff, here's the attachment and some basic system specs:

Before we can even begin to find the underlying cause you need to update the following drivers. Especially asacpi.sys. Yours is from 2005

Code:
ASACPI.sys 3/27/2005 10:30:36 PM
Lycosa.sys 1/18/2008 4:51:42 AM
nvm62x64.sys 10/17/2008 5:01:06 PM
netr28x.sys 2/25/2009 11:02:09 PM
How To Find Drivers:

Quote:
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference Driver Reference

Since i bought this rig a year ago i haven't been able to play any games that runs on the valve engine(half life 2, css, portal etc) more than a few seconds and then the comp reboots.
With Bf2 i can play max 30 minutes and Bf2142 maybe one hour then they crash exactly the same way as Valve games..
All other games i have tried runs without any problem, even the more demanding such as Crysis, Far Cry 2 and Dark Athena.
This is really anoying since the only game i bother about is BF and CSS.

My comp consist of:

cpu: q6600
gfx: 8800 gt 512mb Point of View
mobo: gigabyte ga-n650sli-ds4
ram: 4gb(2x1gb supertalent02 ddr2 pc2-8900u & 2x1gb dimm ddr2 pc26400u)
psu: 570 watt

Cpu temp is at full load 60c and gpu is at full load 70c, i added an extra fan to the gfx and set the fan to 80%. nothing is overclocked.
I tried with diffrent memorys, changed hdds, reinstalled a bunch of times, reinstalled windows xp 32bit, maybe 10 diffrent nvidia drives, also changed settings for the sound card but none of that made any diffrence.
Havent been able to test with other gfx.

Anyone else hade this issue and manage to solve it then please let me know, also greatful for all suggestions.

I have looked online extensively but haven't found anything related to this issue. Whenever I play games (any game), five minutes into play the game will freeze for about a minute. Another five minutes later it will repeat the process. Does not matter which game or which settings I am using. My CPU usage goes up to 100% which I haven't noticed happening before, temps have not increased. Memory is at 30-40% usage.-Checked drivers and updated-Ran memory tests and checked for memory leaks, returns nothing-Ran tests on hard drives, no issues-Checked temps, all normal-Ran torture tests on CPU, no problems-Formatted hard drives and reinstalled OS and games to test, problem persisted-Checked all connections-Cleaned inside and out thoroughlyCPU, Motherboard, HDD, and RAM are all about 5 years old. Everything else has been replaced within the last year.Thank you.

Asus A8N SLI Deluxe Motherboard

When I play doom 3, Half-life 2, F.E.A.R. or any other game utilising directx 9.0b and higher, the game crashes when I put all the settings to high. The weird thing is that it used to work just fine. Now, when games crash, it usually shows the whole entire screen, filling up with flickering blue squares. The sound keeps going on for about 10 more seconds, and then the sound freezes up too. When I press any button after this happens, The monitor flickers and then shows a screen that is bizarrely coloured. I am using Windows XP Professional 64 bit-edition

Yesterday I upgraded my wife's Hp Pavilion 6720 to windows 10 from windows 7 Home Premium. She plays a lot of offline games on it. On a few from "Bitwise" (Pocket Tanks, Super DX Ball to name a couple), her monitor is showing only about half of screen and is showing very large. I've tried going to her control panel and checking how I can make her views smaller, but I can't find the area I need to be in. Everything else seems to be okay. Can anyone help??

A:Games and Windows 10

Do you actually have a HP Pavilion p6720f Desktop PC (BV532AA) which came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and has ATI Radeon 4200 integrated graphics, or do you have a different model desktop?
What's the description of the monitor and its native resolution?

According to the driver downloads section for that desktop, no Windows 10 drivers are provided for it.
That means you're at the mercy of Windows 10 and Microsoft providing drivers for its graphics device and other devices.
It's my guess the graphics device is running in default VGA mode and isn't able to provide the necessary resolution setting for the monitor.

I'm running two machines, one XP SP1 and the other 2K SP4 in a public institution. (I'm kinda in charge of them). The institution would like to deny access to the built in games that come with Windows. (Solitaire, free cell, mine sweeper, etc') I deleted them from the Start menu, but of course they still exist in the System32 folder.
I tried to delete them from there, but Windows of course won't let me. Nor will it let me change the file names or extensions, nor deny access to those files.
How can I stop people from going in there and running these programs?
Thanks.

Hi,

I bought my laptop in October, its a Hp dv7-2111TX, with Q9000 Quad and 4 GB RAM.

Also, my graphics card is a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650.

I recently upgraded, not clean install, to Windows 7 Home Premium from Windows Vista Home Premium.

The main game I play on my laptop is Gears of War for Windows. On Vista, with max settings with EVERY setting, I was getting 60fps.

I installed Windows 7 and suddenly my fps dropped down to 30, sometimes 15 on maps like Mansion.

I went to the ATI website and then HP one (for Australia) and downloaded the latest drivers and Catalyst. This however had no effect on the fps at all.

To increase my fps I had to decrease the graphics settings to low to achieve at most 50fps.

IT IS NOT A HARDWARE PROBLEM, I HAD 60 FPS ON VISTA AND I HAVE A QUAD CORE.

I'm just wondering if anyone could help me out? It would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

I had to reload win 98 to correct another problem, which was fixed. Now, when i launch a game the screen goes black and the computer locks up. This happens about the time when the CDROM normally spins up to xransfer info, it remains still. This happens to more than one game and i have reloaded each. The only way to get back is to turn the computer off then on to reboot. I have reloaded win 98 again to no avail. The CROM works fine with programs other than games, i.e. tripmaker, office, even misic CDs work fine.

Hi to all

Have been trying to install Call of Duty 2(1.2),Dirt and MotoGP 08 on the old rig that I am using. Without success.

My system specs do not meet the minimum specs for Dirt so really no chance of running that any way.
Both CoD2 and MotoGP 08 ran well under XP but after upgrading to window8 (.exe not .iso) I cannot manage to install any games that did work under XP pro sp3.

The game disics were inserted to drive and using the open folder to view files at autostart prompt the set up.exe was ran as administrator, the installer started for CoD2 but stopped because of a problem but no pop up box with error codes or advice to rectify, the motogp 08 installer was started the same as CoD2 and did see aaplication successfully installed but when I double click the desktop shortcu,t get start menu, click start the game starts loading but just after second intro(Nvidia) game crashes and windows tells me there was a problem but cannot be fixed go to Capcom for advice....
Have been searching online and feel the best hope of getting gaming starts here so...

Any advice on diagnosing and rectifying what could be stopping my games from working would be more than appreciated so thanks in advance.

The only prob with machine other than games not working was 1) updated printer driver to vista/7 to get printer working and 2)as I had no audio at all so had to edit a file regarding version dependencies.Following instructions from these forums.

It was an a very low-rig laptop (but paid €1,200 for it around in 2003)

You could always dual boat into XP ... (also to note: if your current os is 8 and you install XP on other partition/drive/etc it may disable the boot menu, just edit it around

I downloaded a zip file containing a very old game. I found out it won't install or run on my Windows 7 operating system. Is there any way to get it to run or function on Windows 7? I tried using DOS-Box Emulator but it is extremely confusing and I don't understand how to make it run my program. If I repurchased a Windows XP would an MS-DOS program have an easier time running? I recently lost a Computer-Graphic picture from that game and it no longer exists on the web, so I am willing to do whatever it takes to get one of my first favorite pieces of art back.

I would be willing to buy a Windows 98 to be able to run old games, but the only question I have is would the picture and screenshots of the games have dots and lower image quality? I'm not sure if they would have complete clarity or if there would be dots and lines over parts of the image making low quality images.

A:Help: MS-DOS Games in Windows 7

If your version of Windows 7 is 64 bit, then the only way to run an old DOS game (which is very likely 16 bit) is to use an emulator like DOSbox or an operating system contemporary to the game either in a virtual machine or as a second operating system (installing an older Windows OS next to a newer one that's already installed is very tricky, so the virtual machine would be much easier.)

As to how the game would look, I would venture to say that your best bet would be to use DOSbox. Running an older OS in a virtual machine or as a second operating system might be ugly looking since it's unlikely that video drivers exist for your hardware that are compatible with a very old version of Windows like Windows 98.

DOSbox isn't really all that hard to use once you get used to it.

Windows 98 has those programs. It might be that the default is not to install it. Go to Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs > Windows Components tab. double click on the Accessories tab, and there should be a listing for Games. Make sure that it's checked. If it's checked and you don't have the listings, uncheck it, then OK it. Go back in and recheck it.

Hello Orimac, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you like, you can check at the Compatibility Center at Microsoft to see what games are compatible with Windows 8.
Windows Compatibility Center: Find Updates, Drivers, & Downloads for Windows 8, Windows RT and Windows 7
If it's not compatible, then you might see if running it compatibility mode may allow it to run in Windows 8.

What Windows7 is best for games? 32bit or 64bit?
Can a MIDI connector(Joystick connector) be used in Windows 7?
Can old joysticks be used in Windows 7?

A:Windows 7 and games.

According to our friend Wikipedia: Microsoft has discontinued game port support with Windows Vista, so it is probable that manufacturers will cease to produce boards with this connector. However, it's still entirely possible to provide third-party drivers that will work with the game port, and some companies that have produced game port cards in the past do so. USB adapters that allow gameport controllers to work have also been available. So you're pretty much on your own there. As far as bit goes, 64-bit allows you to have more than 4GB of RAM (which gamers like). But there are occasionally compatibility issues with 64-bit systems (certain drivers, programs, etc. don't work). Personally, I'm a 32-bit guy. 4GB of RAM is plenty for what I do. Your needs may differ, however, and perhaps 64-bit is right for you.It depends on if you want to upgrade your current system (and if it's compatible with Windows 7 and/or 64-bit), or if you want to buy a new computer with Windows 7 preinstalled. If you give us a little more info on what your current setup is and what you wish to have with Windows 7, we can better advise on whether or not switching to Windows 7 (or possibly dual-booting) is right for you. If you Publish a Snapshot using Speccy, we can quickly assess if your hardware is up to par with the requirements for running Windows 7.

Hi everyone

I recently bought a new computer, which came with Windows 7. To date 15 (fifteen) of my favourite games either won't launch or launch but won't run - some won't run at all, some show the opening credits etc, and then hits a brick wall.

I've tried EVERY compatibility on the drop down list but not one of them shows a glimmer of possibility. I know this is like asking for the Holy Grail, but does anyone have any other ideas as to what I can try. I've tried tracking down the original companies and the companies that bough them out for fixes and or patches, but I've drawn a big blank.

I didn't want to list about 15 or 16 games and their publishers unless someone wants it. I'm really mad at Microsoft. Why write something as big s Windows 7 *knowing* that software, printers, faxes, and a multitude of other peripherals just won't work. With the expertise they have they could have sorted that out before it was released.

I got 4 gB Ram, dual core CPU, Windows 7 Home Basic and a gigabyte Graphics card GT 520 with 1 gB Ram. The only solution *I*can think of is to back up my drive. then nuke it and install my beloved XP. But a thought crossed my mind:- Will XP be able to read data etc which was created by Windows 7. Could someone tell me that?

Many thanks

they may not have been selected during the install.

start/settings/control panel/add remove programs/add windows components, see if the games were installed, if not check the box, put the install cd in the tray/ok and you'll probably need to do a restart.

This happened once before it lasted about a week and corrected itself. The computer works well, any number of programs can be running, but as soon as a Windows game - Spider, solitaire, etc is started the system crashes within ten seconds.
The timing the first time: It started after a weekly Windows update was applied. It ended after the next update. Coincidence?
That was several months ago
Timing for second time: It happened following last update.
I'm suspicious but not certain. Has anyone had this experience?

A:Windows Games

I am one of those people who installs every critical or recommended update windows update has offered for my computer, I can not tell you why your computer was crashing, the only difference between what you would receive for Windows 7 updates and what others would receive is hardware drivers.

Those I do not install, because they are not always the correct version or drivers and can sometimes cause problems.

My problem is probally going to be with the OS of windows 7 being incompatible for these games is what i think. is there any way to bypass these problems so i can play my classics again? =)

A:Games for Windows 7

Hi,

The built in compatibility options in 7 are pretty good, but there is a large chance they won't work.

If you have Professional/Ultimate then you have access to a XP virtual machine free of charge (see: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir.../download.aspx) however at least on my machine (2.66 dual core, 3 gigs ram, 1gig GTS250) the virtualization slows things down to such an extent that it lags in Pinball (yes, pinball).

Your best option by far would be to dual boot XP and 7.

Especially as both games you mention were released pre XP

Reventon

How is it possible that a game from 1999 can run very good and then I have another game from 2003 that fails directly after launch?

I have actually given up on even trying to get it working after my spec destroyed the game CD while it was inside my computer and yeah....!

Populous: The Beginning released April 2, 1999.
Works 100% okay some small graphic problems.

Command and Conquer: Generals & Generals Zero Hour released September 22, 2003.
Crashes when screen with loading appears but it does not crash windows explorer, there is a blue screen(Not BSOD) left on my computer only thing i can do is take up task manager and end the process, after trying in different compatibility modes I hear a little cracking noise from my CD box and then a bang and I have no CD!
I also made a dual boot just to get the game working but I did not put enough space, Grrahhhh roar..!

I know i should have posted this when I still had the CD and before the announcement of Generals 2 TBA 2013!!

Not unusual for some old games to run well in Windows 7 while others more up-to-date have issues.

Possible workarounds:

- game update
- run the game in compatibility mode
- dual boot with XP
- if the physical hardwarw is powerful enough, the game may run quite well in virtual box (e.g. serious sam)

can you use a joystick controller for Xbox games on windows 8.1 and if so what controller do I buy?
I"m kinda new to xbox on pc and am not sure what controllers the games will work with ...

A:xbox games on windows 8.1

I would imagine controller support is based on if the application supports it or not so it may vary application to application on whether it will support joystick or game pads. Personally I have always been a big fan of logitech products as the ones I have install the drivers the moment I plug them in. If you want a game pad and you do not want logitech then you could use a xbox 360 controller and xbox one controller support on the PC is supposedly coming soon this year.

You just need the keys and should be able to download them from the software mfg website.

Hi there
If you have an XP installation THESE games will run

Copy to say a USB device from a Windows XP installation from folder windows==>system32 to a folder on your usb say XPgames.

don't forget the Cards.dll file

Cards.dll
freecell.exe
mshearts.exe
sol.exe
spider.exe
winmine.exe

if you need spider help files there should be somewhere a spider.chm and spider.hlp but it's not necessary.

Pinball also is possible --copy the entire pinball folder -- I don't bother with that one. (it's in programfiles==>windowsnt folder copy to same folder as you copied the other XP games.

works on W8 x-64.

have fin

Man, "cards.dll" brings me back - I used to carry around one that had customized card faces, but had to ditch it when moving from 98SE to XP.

Hey guys, I'm having a bit of trouble here. I've been trying to get Oregon Trail working on my Windows 7 for the past few hours now (here's the link if it helps at all http://www.myabandonware.com/game/oregon-trail-deluxe-1h9#download). I downloaded VMLite thing to get Windows XP Mode, which I then selected the oregon trail exe file to put the files but... well, either I did something wrong or it failed. Can anyone help? By the way I'm not too good with technical terms, so if you could try and keep it simplier, it'd be appreciated.

Just to explain a bit more, I'm at the part with VMLite where it says to specify VMLite to Windows XP Mode... and I choose the oregon trail exe file, and it says "failed to extract the msi file".

A:Running 32 bit (and 16 bit) games on a Windows 7?

After looking at that link you provided, I feel a wave of nostalgia overcoming me, I used to play that game all the time lol. I'm going to give it a download as well,

Ok to your problem, I had a look at the website and it recommends a program called D-Fend, which is a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for the DOS-BOX program (That allows you to mount and run old dos software). I know it doesn't say its explicitly for Win7 but have you tried that?

I used to play games on W7 a lot whilst waiting for a download or some other to complete.
and was upset (not the strongest word I would choose) when I found they had been removed.
After a number of searches I found this solution.
From a working Windows 7 x86 copy the games folder from your program folder
copy cardgames.dll from windows/system32
and put the games folder in W8 program files (x86). Even if on a 64 bit system.
Now put a copy of cardgames.dll in each sub-folder ie hearts, solitaire etc.
Then because you would manually have to edit a number of system files and programs
[email protected] created a small patcher to edit the files concerned.
this is attached ; Run the patch browse to the games executable say hearts.exe in the
program files (x86) then click patch. Repeat for each game you wish to patch.
Note ignore any virus warnings they are false positives but coming up because your editing a program exe.

I am actually posting this to find a solution for my friend. He just installed windows 7 on his computer the other day and when he tried to play his games some of them would be letter boxed.

His windows resolution is set to 1920x1080. In guild wars, he can change the resolution to 1920x1080 and it removes the black bars, however in assassin's creed when he sets the resolution to 1920x1080 the black bars are still there.

Two days ago when he played on windows vista everything was fine, it has just been since he has installed windows 7.

I've looked around on some other forums and found other similar posts, but no answers. He has up to date drivers and I have no idea what else would cause the problem.

The easiest way is to go to start, control panel, add remove programs, add/remove windows components(cant remember the exact wording..been a while since I used 2k), highlight accessories and click details. check the box and let them install.

You will need your windows 2k install disk.

I have alot of old windows 98 that played with fast frames in windows 7. too fast actually, that I have to use frame limiters to control the games.

in windows 8, its another story, same games, play at really slow frames. like my on an old computer again....
and the drivers and intel chipset drivers are up to date.

nvidia 580gtx
intel 2600
16gb memory

are rumors about other people having same problem.

its sad that I can run the same games in vmware and the play at very high framerates

I do have some games though had glitches in windows 7 but not in windows 8.

A:old games on windows 8 slow

Hmm, Yeah, don't know. It might be due to using older API but like you said it worked in Windows 7 so it should work in 8.

Can you check if these older games have newer equivalents like instead of playing Pinball in windows xp you can play: Pinball FX2 app for Windows in the Windows Store

Yeah you just probably need to use a Virtual system to get it up and running.

I've been perusing computer puzzle games online to purchase (Amazon). I've noticed they will say windows 7, vista, xp, windows 2000, 98, or any combo of these next to game/cd name. Many say Vista/XP, but not 7, and vice versa. Does this mean that if XP is required, it will not work with Vista or 7? Or if it says Vista/XP, it won't run on 7?
Just don't to waste money on games that it turns out can't be run on Vista or windows 7.
Thanks.

Hello!
I've been having an issue with limited success. I recently bought a new laptop for gaming and noticed a really annoying bug that has surfaced.

Laptop Stats:
CPU: Intel Core i7 Processor 720QM (1.6Ghz, 6MB, L3 Cache)
Card: ATI Radeon HD 5850 1 Gig
Ram: 8 GB Ram
HDD: 2x500 Gig Western Digital Hard drives

The issue is that in games, when something new would happen, the computer would freeze and the
sound would stutter for 1-5 seconds. So of course if I played LONG enough it would go away, but once I started the game again the issue would come up. I found that downloading CrystalDiskInfo and disabling APM fixed the issue for some games.

Games that I've had the issue: World of Warcraft, Counter-strike: Source, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress 2, Dragon Age, Last Scenario.

Games that I haven't had ONE issue with: Singularity, Dragon Age 2.

Now World of Warcraft was resolved due to Disabling APM.

Here is a list of things that I've tried:

- Updated all Drivers
- Used CrystalDiskMark on both Hard drives (Will post data)
- Ran EventViewer and noticed that when there was a stutter the Hardrive Spiked for the time of the freeze.
- Played with the APM
-Uninstalled the SATA AHCI Controller
-CheckDisk on both drives, no errors.

What makes me think it's a Hard Drive issue (or possibly a Driver issue) is because whenever the freeze happens the Hard drive light is on the entire time. I have two hard drives, all the games (save one) are installed th... Read more

Win 10 upgrade failed and I tried to restore my Win 7 from CD from hp.   No games were installed.  Why?

A:Lost games on windows 7.

heartlight I'd like to help you with your problem but I'm having difficulties with what you said. The HP Recovery Media for Win7 is NOT a CD, but instead, a set of DVDs (usually 3) and a separate Drivers CD. The full set of DVDs will reformat your drive and reinstall, not only the OS, but also all the drivers, the HP utilities, and everthing else that came preinstalled on your PC. If all you used was a single CD, that would not have worked to recover your PC. So please explain, in more detail, what you did. We can proceed once you provide the information. Thanks

hi, i just downgraded from WinXP (to strong for my PC).
here are my sytem specs:

633MHz Celeron
384MB RAM(256+128... i case u were wondering how i got 384 like i wondered how it was 384 when i bought it... LoL!)
GeForce2 MX200
SB Live! 24-Bit
Cable Internet
Windows ME(fresh install)

everything is much faster since the downgrade from WinXP such as opening Apps(Internet Explorer, Netscape, Media Player, startup & shutdown, etc, etc...) And even the games themselves load up faster. But gameplay is what is my concern, i expected them to be a tad bit faster. just a tad. but instead, they are exactly the same, and about 5 minutes into the game it gets even worse, as if my cpu or harddrive or RAM or all 3 are trying to do something or something. XP had constant performance(about 15 FPS in Enemy Territory/10 FPS in combat). but in my fresh install of ME, it is just a such until 5 or less minutes into the game, combat FPS drop to like 1 or 2 FPS... LITERALLY!!!!!!!. i am dead serious. why did everything else improve or stay stable besides my games? tip or tweaks out there from anyone desiring to help? i'd appreciate any help at all no matter how feeble of an attemp, i miss ET). thx!!!!!

A:New to Windows Me... how to tweak it for games!?!

First of all, Win98SE is faster than WinME, and uses less resources, and there are customization packs to make it look like ME or XP with all of their abilities.

Second, Win98/ME drivers aren't even being properly worked on, I wouldn't be surprised to see WinXP running games faster than WinMe even on your PC.

WinXP can be tweaked so much it can have the speed of a Win98SE with no problems - I really recommend switching back to XP and then tweaking that, my commit charge in XP is only 68MB with all drivers - and the thing screams on my Athlon TB 1.2GHz, I know your Celeron is slower, but it should run pretty fast too.

I really urge you to switch back, and if you need, I'll give you a list of links to make your XP every bit as fast as WinME (and faster in games).
