Q: unable to customize lock screen, start screen, account picture

i m unable to change my windows 8 appearance as this menu is disable in my windows can anyone please help me as i m new to windows 8 ?

A: unable to customize lock screen, start screen, account picture

If you're using the official release of Windows 8 Enterprise trial, you'll need to activate it. PC Settings doesn't have an entry to Activate, so you'll need to go to the Desktop to do so. The little Action Center icon on the lower right hand side (a little flag) should have a red X. Click on it, and it should say you need to activate. Do so, and you'll get those customizing features unlocked.

Hello! First post on this fantastic forum which has sorted me out a number of times. However I can't find a solution for this issue , so I hope someone can help me!

Following a rollback to 8.1 after installing the full release of Windows 10 I've been unable to change the account pictures, lock screens or picture passwords for any user. I've tried the following.

Create new userRegistry change and GPE change Unable to change the image on the Lock Screen "'Lock Screen - Microsoft CommunityDeleting account pictures folderTaking ownership of, and deleting C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\SystemDataRunning sfc /scannow, several times after checking component store for corruption

It's driving me a bit nuts now! If anyone has any suggestions I'd be very grateful!

I don't know what may happen, but I think it worth to try:
First of all, go to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft
and copy the Default Account Pictures folder and then rename it to any name, after this open the original Default Account Pictures folder and delete the picture and the data file which belong to the user and try to change accaunt picture

One thing that annoys with Windows 8 is the lock screen. I don't want my monitor to turn of after one minute (or whatever it's set to). I haven't found a setting to change this, so I guess you aren't supposed to change it? Unless I've missed it.
It feels like this was designed with only tablets in mind. Why couldn't it just be affected by the settings I've set up in the control panel? And I'd also want the screensaver to work..

Also another annoying thing with the lock screen is that I can't start typing my password immediately, instead I have to press a key and wait just a little before I can start typing. Sometimes I forget this and type in my password and press enter, but of course it says that it was the wrong password, because it didn't register the first two/three keys.

Since I'm using a desktop pc, what's the point with this "Swipe to unlock" crap? Though I like having the time and date in the left corner. The optimal thing would be to have the date and time and the wallpaper on the same screen as the password screen.

Does anyone know if I can do something about this?

A:Customize the lock screen?

Hello homtr,

If you like, you could disable the lock screen to only have the sign in screen instead.

For your monitor turning off after a minute, double check your power plan settings using the tutorial below to set "Turn of the Display" to "Never", or what you like instead.

I want my lock screen's date format to be abbreviated day, day number, then year. Can this be done? I know about the Registry LocaleInfo's TimeFormat key that controls the time format, but it doesn't seem to affect my Lock screen at all. I'd also like to see AM | PM in the time. It never shows, even though my key has h:mm:ss tt, with neither seconds nor AM | PM appearing.

What about the date? I'd like the date to show as, for example, "Sat. 16 May, 2015," and a long-name month as, e.g., "Fri., 25 Sep., 2015."

A:How to customize lock-screen date format?

Swipe down on the right side of your screen, or go to "Search" from the Start Menu. Search for "PC Settings" and choose the purple and white gear icon. On the left side look for "Time and Language." Click that and then make sure from there "Date and Time" is selected on the left. On the right side, at the bottom, select "Change date and time formats"
The lockscreen is not very customizable, but you should be able to get the date changed from there.

A:Is it possible to have a gif on the lock screen instead of a picture?

Hi Josbeph,

I was curious and found THIS. I only briefed it, so I'm not certain if it works with the 'lock screen' image or not, however there is some info about the "Smart Screen." I did read something about using your own images "at regular intervals," which I kow is not what you were looking for, but I did not read through everything. It's also for Win-8.1, but I would suspect if it has that option, then Win-10 might as well.

It mentioned THIS program to help.

You can choose a Background here. Windows spotlight will show images that Microsoft has chosen. Picture and Slideshow let you choose your own picture(s).
You can also open a photo in the Photos app, click the three dots in the top right, Set as, and then Set as lock screen.

The picture I have selected appears in the correct picture box in settings but when I restart my PC the startup page picture is one of Microsoft's own & mine is nowhere to be seen. Kinda having an odd issue. I use the windows spotlight to set my lock screen. So that it changes about once a day automatically. But when I reboot the computer, it reverts back to some old lock screen image I set manually a couple months ago. If I login to the PC and lock it again, then it will go back to the spotlight image. Not a huge deal, just thought this was odd.

I've had this issue for a while on my SP3.
6 out of 10 times when waking it up from sleep instead of showing my lock screen image it'll show just a solid colour, my accent colour.
I've been running Windows insider and have done a system reset, but it still happens (maybe the bug exists in my recovery partition too?).
I'm almost at the point of just doing a complete system reinstall.
Any ideas?

I really like the convenience of the start screen in windows 8  ... the computer is finally starting to think in images like I do!  However, all the tiles seem to look alike.  For instance, any web page shortcut that I pin to the start page mostly just has writing on it and looks similar to any other tile.  Can I edit the tile to have a picture?  I have several shortcuts to web pages of friends and would like to put a photo of them so that I can quickly see the difference.

A:customize or edit tiles on start screen?

This is the only program I know.
You can edit some things, but not all.  I knew of a program that let you change the icon pack of the tiles, but I have forgotten it.
Mind you, you will have to change the extension of this from .ex_ to .exe.

Hey everyone

Not going to explain my entire life on here, just a little question.
I want my laptop to have a nice dark theme to it
I have very sensitive eyes and normal brightness hurts very quickly.
So the only way i was able to nicely darken the screen, was to select one of the high contrast themes that comes preloaded with windows 8

and with a darkish desktop background, i think i did pretty well, I will try to post a picture up here so you can see what im talkng about, but im not sure if it will work

so anyway, i locked out of the computer, and took a look at the lock screen and it is this horrid looking dark blue purplish background, almost made me puke. Then i found out that you can change the background image

not for high contrast themes.

is there ANY way around this?
I dont care about the contrast, i just want a darker screen, and the only way i was able to achieve such freedom to change window colors and general colors was by selecting the high contrast theme and fiddling around with it.

I saved it as my own theme but theres no tricking this device, it still counts it as high contrast.

Does anybody know if i have any options around this? I have looked around for similar incidents, but nothing has come up yet.

any input is valued, friends

happy holidays.

Remove anything else except for that picture and frame.

I recently bought a 950xl. When I set it up, I used my old MS account (call it "account1"). The home screen was set up like it was on my 1520 when it imported everything, but when I would click on an email tile (I had 4 accounts) on the home screen, I would be sent to an outlook screen to "add an account". I could not edit any of the tiles for any email account. Deleted them, re-pinned but nothing would change. Going right into outlook I could only see the same "add account" screen and nothing else. So I tried a second time, same thing.
So on the third attempt to set up this phone, I just created a new MS account (call it "account2") and did all the email setups by scratch. I declined all onedrive settings with the new acount because I don't need it with a large NAS at home. However, a week later I have a disturbing thing happening with this phone.
The lock screen randomly changes from my setting it to a Bing picture, to "my picture". Now it doesn't take pictures of my new phone (of which I have about 5 pictures), but it is somehow taking pictures that were on Onedrive UNDER MY PREVIOUS ACCOUNT (account1). I can click on "account" and go to onedrive and there is nothing there of course because I declined to use it with account2. In fact I went to onedrive on my desktop, and logged in with my old account (prior to deleting it), and verified there were no pictures on onedrive under my old account1. I then deleted it ... I'm running identical Vista Enterprise computers in a lab environment on a Windows Domain, and am having an issue with the user account picture.  Namely, on the user logon screen, just above the fields for the username and password, there's a giant empty frame where the user account picture should be.
I've already replaced the user.bmp and guest.bmp, so that our company logo will show up for users in the start menu after they've logged in, and will show up in the logon window for their user name if they've locked their session, but I'm unable to get the picture to show up on the original logon screen before the user logs in.
Some group policies we have include:

Interactive logon: Do not display last user name

Interactive logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL

Always use classic logon

I just replaced the PSU on my wife's PC with a new (refurbished, actually) OCZ. At start, the COMPAQ page comes up and that's it. It won't go past that. It worked before I did the PSU replacement. I should say that it worked somewhat. The reason for the PSU replacement was because she was having a lock up when she played some of her games. Two are browser based (Runescape and Freerealms) and the others is Sims 3. She only has freeze up on these games. We were using a CoolerMaster PSU before and I understand they are not overly dependable.
I checked to make sure everything was plugged in and it was. While I await an asnwer, I'll put the old PSU back to test that.

I can't seem to find any way to lock my start screen once I get my apps organized and just the way I want them. Is there no way to lock your apps so that they can't be rearranged by someone? If not then that seems like a glaring omission. I spend a great deal of time arranging it and then my three year old comes along and messes it all up. I would like to prevent this. I know I can create a user password and just not let anyone on it, but that is not the solution that I'm looking for. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Start screen. Can you lock it?

Hi there
Not the answer to the question - but a decent "work around" - which you should in any case be doing as a matte of course.

BEFORE and AFTER making changes just take a system image backup -- if you have the OS on a separate disk / partition and keep your USER DATA (movies /office docs. photos, music etc) on different drives this should be easy and only take around 20 mins or so (much less if you have installed OS to an SSD and backup to an external SSD.

Use something like Free Macrium or even a commercial product like Acronis True Image.

The amount of time these types of program save is beyond calculation -- then simply restore the OS again - in any case I would do that after ANYBODY has touched the machine --you don't know what else might have been changed whether accidentally or deliberately -- not sure a 3 year old would actually do anything malicious on a machine - but it's still good practice to take timely backups.

Hello, I am pretty good with computer but I have ran in to a problem I just can't fix. The operating system will not let me change the lock screen background mode from Windows Spotlight to something else. I have searched for an hour without any luck. My laptop has had a history of breaking down. The first time was hard drive failure and I have lost all my data. The second time I needed to repair was when the computer got so slow it was unusable and eventually got blue screens at boot And I needed to reinstall the operating system. When I try to go to edit the setting it is grayed out and on the top it says Some settings are managed by your organization" I am not apart of any organization and I am the only user on the computer with Administrator privileges. I would be very happy if you could help me with this, thanks in advance!

A:Unable to change lock screen background mode.

I have a very similar problem as this with my lockscreen which I've been trying to fix for about a week. I have seen that it seems many have similar problems so it may be a common windows error. For a while my lockscreen was the default red rock formation but only half of it showed as the bottom half was black. Now, when waking from sleep or restarting, My lock screen will be all black when I wake it up like it's trying to load a picture but cant. I can't click through to the sign in screen so I have to wait but it eventually just goes to the signin screen. Attempting to go to personalization>lockscreen grays settings out without going to the lockscreen option and then I just have to close settings. I tried Deleting all files in C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\Loca lState\Assets and turned off sync for themes and windows settings and windows spotlight was working fine with new images last night and this morning but now it's back to the same thing. I get a security warning when selecting all files in the above folder and right clicking also.

I am currently unable to set a lock screen background image (Windows 10 Pro 64-bit). When on the Lock Screen customization window, it is pretty bare with no images to choose from. Browsing and choosing any image results in nothing happening and it does not add it (refer to LockScreen image attached). If I try to set it when viewing any image it has the error "Can't set as lock screen. Make sure the file isn't damaged and try again." (refer to PhotoSet image attached). Some background on this is probably needed, so here's what has happened/been done:
In Windows 8.1 I customized the default lock screen to a custom image using the guide at (the manual method/Option 2). Yesterday I upgraded to Windows 10 and it set the lock screen to a basic color. Then the fun started...

1. Lock Screen customization appeared normal/functional. Tried choosing a different image or custom image. It would appear set, but lock screen would not change (even after reboot).

2. Tried troubleshooting by taking the same actions as in Windows 8.1. Did the same actions for the new folders that Windows 10 uses in the %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\SystemData\ folder (deleted the images within the lettered folder(s)).

3. Checked every Registry Key I found mention of when searching online (none needing to be changed).

I have a older pc the onboard is really weak. it was meant for win xp but I have win7. I just got a NVidia GeForce FX 5500 250mb 128bit PCI TV+DVI. it came with the driver disk cause I got it new in box, when I put it in and start the pc I get nothing on the screen from onboard or the card. I tried disabling the onboard that didn't work, so then I tried taking the card out and starting pc an installing the drivers first but it said it couldn't find a device for the drivers, meaning I have to have the card in before I can install the drivers. how can I get video to come up weather it be onboard or video card long enough to install the drivers?

I've been using Windows 10 for just over one year. For some reason the Lock Screen/Sign-in screen shows three users. All three are me in three iterations. I find also that when trying to save some excel and word documents I receive messages saying that i am not allowed to save to this folder or that folder. I am able to save to the desk top and then drag and drop the document into the folder that I need to place it in. I know that this must have something to do with "permissions". Not sure how to fix that. One of the accounts that shows up is the initial account that I created back when was around. Any ideas/advice on these issues? When i updated to Windows 10, pretty certain that i followed all of the instructions, although that has been over 1 year now. Thank you in advance...cheers and beers to all!

I've recently reinstalled Windows 7 due to this problem, and everything was running smoothly up until today (approximately 4 days after I reinstalled the OS). This morning, I attempted to boot up my computer as usual, and it simply hardlocked as soon as the Welcome screen came up.

This hardlock only recently started happening with my PC when I hooked up a fourth monitor to my GPU, to produce a 3x1 monitor arrangement, plus my Cintiq tablet. (Currently, the Cintiq is in the shop for repairs.) When that configuration was plugged in, the computer started hardlocking. After that, I reinstalled Windows 7 over the weekend, and it was all working fine. Up until now.

There have been no BSOD's at all - even with the hard locks, and I attempted to use the driver verifier to see what was causing it, as this is my greatest suspicion. I rarely find that my computer builds have problems, though I don't have the tools to test my RAM yet (would like some help in this regard).

This is my workstation that I use for my art. I would like to resolve this ASAP before the week is over. Please help! ; 3

Have you tried the System Repair Disc you can make in Win7's Control Panel, Backup and Restore? It has to be for either 32-bit or 64-bit but your System Specs do show you have the 64-bit version of Windows. It doesn't necessarily have to be made from a specific computer.

I have run accross an unusual problem installing win7 on two different laptops and getting the same result, stuck on start up screen directing after the first loading of files. The logo does not even start to appear.

I have been repairing and building computers for about 15yrs. now and I have seen many issues from Microsoft that just sometimes defy logic.

I am attemping this on a Dell XPS M1210 and a Gateway MA7 MX6959.

I have done all the obvious things; change ram, change dvd module, OS system disk incl. win7 win8 winXP 32bit & 64bit, bios reset.

Both these computers are laptop so if you need further info to help I will need to disassemble for independent identification of components.

I have recieved both laptops with current issue and do not know history.

Please Help I am stuck.

I am trying to make a shortcut to lock my screen and invoke the screensaver with one batch file.

I came up with this:

@echo off
rem ScreenSaver
cd %windir%\
rem LOCK
cd %windir%\system32
start rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation

With this batch file, the screen locks (need to put in my password) but the screen saver doesn't start.
Upon entering my password, I see the settings for that particular screensaver were called for not the actual screensaver.

However, when I run C:\Windows\WLXPGSS.SCR the screensaver plays but doesn't "Show welcome screen" and password prompt as selected in the screen saver properties.

I want to click one batch file to lock the screen and play that screensaver only.

That screensaver, by the way, seems it's only part of "Windows Live Setup" which needs to be downloaded from here ...possibly not on all Windows 7 computers.
File Name: wlsetup-web.exe

Here is what is included with Windows Live can choose only what you want at install time.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi there,

The User profile Service service failed the logon
User profile cannot be loaded

I have no idea what to do, it has never happened before in the three and half years I have had the laptop and there is no help in the manuals. Any ideas or help would be much appreciated

A:Unable to log on the user account screen

It sounds like a profile may be corrupted.

You should run a disk check firt of all. That can be done from a command prompt on your booted DVD or from Safe Mode.

If that does not help, try logging in as administrator (Ctrl+Alt+Del twice on the logon screen, then enter "Administrator" and the admin password).

Hi there,
My partner Tracys HP DV6 laptop is refusing to boot. The machine appears to power up as normal, the power, volume and wifi lights above the keyboard light up as does the 'on' light at the front left corner and the fan can be heard running but the screen remains blank with no flickers of anything and no sign of even a cursor. The caps lock/num lock* lights repeatedly give two blinks in time with each other.
* I say num lock light. I think this is what it's normally referred to although num lock is not the nearest button. It's at the top right hand corner of the screen next to the 'End/page up' buttons.
After a bit of googling I have tried doing the hard reset (switch off, remove battery and power cable, leave for 30s then hold down power button for 1 min before rebooting). I also tried connecting an external monitor via the vga socket and to a TV set via the HDMI output. None of these approaches have yielded any results. My googling has also revealed the two blinks from caps lock/num lock are the code for a BIOS corruption fault.
I found instructions for restoring the BIOS here...
I was going to follow the instructions there but wanted to check here first in case there was a more appropriate course of action I should take first.
Another thing is that there seems to be a lot of heat being blown out by the fan considering the machine appears not to be booting.

On my Windows Vista 32 Bit version, i have two accounts. My admin acc and my guest acc. About a week ago my admin account stop working, when i logged into it the screen turned black and it would not display anything, except the task manager when pressed. The computer has started to freeze and go ridiculously slow. When i log out a blue error message displays and it kicks me off. I can however get acces to my guest account. When i log on a weird application called hn wants to run (this started to happen when first when the problem began.) I do not let it run. I have run multiple ad aware scans and Panda antivirus scans as well but they do not pick up anything. I would just like some help to stop my computer from going slow and to get access to my admin account.

A:Vista Black Screen Unable to access account

Have you tried logging on in safe mode? If not, try doing so. After you start your computer, but BEFORE windows starts, press the F8 key, and, I believe, an Advanced Options menu comes up. Pick the option for safe mode.

If Safe Mode does let you log on, run your anti-virus program, doing a *full* scan.

When i log on a weird application called hn wants to run (this started to happen when first when the problem began.)Click to expand...

While still in safe mode, check to see if this file is in the startup options - click start, then type "msconfig" (w/out the quotes) into the search box, then enter. The System Configuration utility should be on your desktop - click the "startup" tab, then look through everything that is checked, and see if you can find the mysterious HN application. If it is there, and there's a check mark next to it, UNcheck it, then press apply, then ok. Then windows will ask if you want to restart, click "restart now," reboot normally (without pressing F8) and try logging on normally.

Let us know what happens.

Good luck!

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

I am using a windows 7 Home prem. 64bit
I want a computer with no administrator privilege. The start up screen should only show one standard account. There should be no other account to see when I start up the PC.

And when the standard account wants a admin privilege, a box should appear where I can type in the password.

What I tried was activating the default administrator account by "net user administrator /active:yes". After setting the password I deactivated the admin account inorder to hide it at the start up screen. But when the "standard account" wanted to use the admin privilege it asked for the password with no field to type it into.
Apparently disabling the administrator account means; not able to use the admin password either. I had to restart the PC in "Safe Mode Command Prompt", go into the admin account, activate the admin account(net user administrator /active:yes), restart the PC and so on.....

Long story short; I don't want to have the admin account to be like "IN YOUR FACE" when ever the user "STARTS UP" this computer.
Is this thing possible?

A few years back I changed the name of my Dell D830 laptop from "pob laptop" to "D830-laptop". Everything was hunky dory (old expression ) until I decided to create a new user account and gave it admin privileges. I then changed the privileges on the D830-laptop account to standard user.
Now, when I boot up the laptop the welcome screen shows "pob laptop" and wrong password error. I then have to switch users every time just to get into the laptop. I have searched everywhere for this name "pob laptop" but can't find it at all. I've searched the registry user profilelist and nothing comes up with that name. I'm pretty sure that when I changed the name I went through all pertinent files, but evidently I must have missed an important file to have it resurface years later.  I'm really stumped. Any suggestions on how to remove this erroneous user account? I still want to be able to choose between standard user and admin user from time to time, so I don't want to remove the logon screen per se.

Hello...I apologize if this has been posted before...I don't exactly know what search terms to use to describe the problem to find an existing thread.

I am involved in prepping several Panasonic Toughpads for deployment in our environment w/ Windows 8.1 installed. While prepping, we are logging in with domain accounts that have some domain admin privileges for various setups on the local machine.

Upon completion of setup, logging in as the assigned domain user, which, on these systems, will be a local admin. However, after a few seconds, where the account name is displayed on the top right corner of the start menu, it shows the logged in domain username--as it should--then quickly changes to show the previously logged in domain admin user's name.

This is phenomenon is occurring for myself and two of my coworkers who are using isolated domain admin logins assigned to them.

Troubleshooting that has already happened: restarted the system, deleted the domain admin's user folder and assoicated registry key in the ProfileList to no avail. Logged in as yet a different user, and back to the assigned user's account but still showing my domain admin name in the account name. Is this getting circular yet?

Any thoughts?

A:Windows 8.1 Start Screen showing wrong account name

I could be off base here, but are you setting up an MS account for the domain user? That's the only way I can think that it would change the name.

Hello. I am trying to fix an HP G62-367DX Notebook PC.
Operating sys: Win 7, 64bit, AMD Turion(tm) 530II Dual-Core Processor, 4GB, 2.50GHz. I had this laptop since December of 2010 and on June of 2013 is when I used my notebook PC and was initially of no use. I have been working on my laptop on and off since. I am not afraid to open the sucker up and get this thing up and running.

The problem started out with what most ppl call it, the "blue screen of death". Like most ppl, I did ignore the blue screen and did a restart which brought me to the normal Windows screen and then it would start back up just fine. I found this in Device Manager's (Hidden Files):
Non-Plug and Play Drivers
-! ehdrv
-! epfwwfp
-! Security Processor Loader Driver
I am not sure if it has anything to do with what it was the blue screen situation, but I tried searching on the net on what it all meant and to see if I was able to fix it, but before I was able to do something about it, the blue screen kept popping up and it was getting worse.

The problem progressed to where on Windows startup it would just stop there, blue screen would pop up and of course I had to restart it and do an F8 key press for Safe Mode. I had to work on Safe Mode for a good couple of weeks before I can figure out the problem/s. I believe I had went into the system and found out it had something to do with some kind of error... *sigh* I did write it down, but that was like a month ago and I am unable to locate my ... As my title suggest Screen Saver / Lock screen Slideshow / Turn off display after 5 mins are not working under Win 10
The Lock screen Slideshow is there when Win 10 starts but only shows ONE image, never moves to another.
THINGS I've done so far to get any of these working ...Screen Saver / Lock screen Slideshow / Turn off display after 5 mins
I’ve turned off all the Wake on lan functions
Tried different folder/ images for the lockscreen Slideshow ,window spotlight and picture
Tried to set new power options , was able to get SLEEP to show up in "Start" as it was not there before, but once click , the display DID turn off, but wouldn’t turn back on with mouse movement keyboard presses, had to do a hard reboot. Win 10 started without issue and the SLEEP mode was no longer aviable via the power "start" menu.
Anyone have a clue how to get all of these working. Really would like my display to turn off after 5 mins , and the Screen saver to work , the Lockscreen I'm not fussed about

Whenever my laptop wakes up from sleep and shows the lock screen, I click and type in my PIN as normal. But on the lock screen at the top right, there's a Cortana box usually giving an example of what I can do, like 'tap and say remind me to water the plants when I get home'.

The problem is this box stays on the screen after the computer is unlocked, and displays semi-transparently in the top left over all other windows, with the only way to remove it is to double click, have a Cortana window display full screen and then close it.

I'd like to find a way of either fixing this or disabling Cortana from the lock screen altogether as I never use this feature. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hello Tally,

You might check to see if it opened a window that may be hidden behind another opened window. Sometimes these windows are small and can easily be covered up.

If not, then try a sfc /scannow command to see if it can find and fix any bad system files that may be responsible. Afterwards try again.

Hope this helps,

these instructions provided my Microsoft itself couldn't be further from the truth. It says on your Office 365 settings page, to click the photo icon, but there is no photo icon on the page at all. Nowhere in sight do I even see any trace of a photo icon to change. On my personal info page, it shows a generic picture icon, but it is not clickable or changeable! How do I change it? Because Microsoft's instructions are incorrect

A:unable to change Office365 account picture

Instead of trying in Office, go to your Microsoft account instead. there sign in with your Microsoft credentials. Then in the upper right corner you'll see your 'missing' avatar use the pulldown to choose settings. Then on the right side you'll see the Hello greeting. Click the blank image circle and change it there. That will then update to all your Microsoft services.

im unable to pin to start any shortcuts from explorer.

ive tried changing the local group policy Remove pinned programs list from the Start Menu to disable and it still doesn't work

When clicking on the down arrow to add existing shortcuts i can. But i have other programs I wish to pin that aren't listed in there.

Any advise regarding restoring the ability to pin programs to the start menu appreciated, cheers

A:unable to pin to the start screen

Hello Krohm,

Do you have a "Pin to Start" option when you right click on these files?

Are you trying to "Pin to Start" directly from the .exe files of these programs?

I found out that Update 1 (KB2919355) causes logon screen and lock screen issue.

Custom background for both screens are not displayed, instead of custom background there is a solid black background.

Uninstalling this update rolls back this issue and both screens are displayed correctly. Confirmed on Win 8.1 Pro x64.

I'm gonna report it to Microsoft.

Best regards,

A:KB2919355 breaks down logon screen and lock screen

I have the same problem on my laptop.

After the Update 1 my Lock Screen is completely blue and it's not showing the image anymore, I can see the icons but not the pic.

In addition to that, when I choose to reboot the laptop I can only see the loading circle and not the phrase "rebooting".

So I disabled the lock screen as it's just another unnecessary click to login, but what I want to be able to do is customise the background image of the login/ctrl+alt+del screen. I know you can change the "accent" colour but I don't want to use a solid colour. How do I go about this?

Hi was wondering if others experience this. Trying to figure out the cause and if there is a fix.

When I turn on or restart my computer after the teal windows logo with the spinning wheel the screen will flash off quickly then come back on black and then 10 seconds later show the lock screen.

It's kind of annoying to have this delay happening and wondering if it's normal or something that can be fixed.

A:Black Screen after teal windows before lock screen

That sounds normal to me. The only variation might be "how long" you pause on the black screen (while your boot is being processed). Now, for some, that black screen might flash for only a few seconds but for others, it could last quite some time. My advice is to do nothing and live with it.

How can I change the windows 8.1 login screen (that comes with a password) and replace it with any image? I'm not talking about the LOCK screen. I searched a lot , some websites told me to edit the group policy and add a custom image here

But this method did not work. What should I do? I don't need any third party paid software. I require a free method.

Since the latest update (It introduced the slide show of pictures on the lock screen. I think it is KB3124200) I haven't been able to press Enter or Space or any other key for that matter to "slide up" the lock screen photo to get to the password screen. I've looked through the lock screen settings, but I see nothing that could prevent this. Does anyone know why this is and a possible fix for it?

Thanks in advance!

A:Not able to press keyboard to get from lock screen to password screen

Okay, I think I've figured out a solution.

What I did was right click the desktop and choose "Personalize", then choose "Lock Screen" and switch "Show Windows background picture on the sign-in screen" to "Off".

I have no idea as to why this would change anything, but it did solve my problem, and I don't need the Windows logo background, so I'm happy!

Hope this help

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. Everytime or almost everytime I click on an app or go to the desktop and try to get on IE 10 (desktop version), my screen flashes and goes black for a few seconds then returns me to the screen with the space needle, then I click on it and it signs me back in. When I try to use Google Chrome, the websites freeze up on me. I don't want to have to reinstall/reformat as I paid $40 for this for one, and secondly, I don't want to have to repurchase Office 2010 as my licenses ran out. Please help. I ran every update that comes up and restart, but this doesn't change this issue. I'm hoping there will be a patch or service pack or some update that will fix this. Any ideas why it does this and any way to fix it without reformatting?

A:Windows 8 Pro, screen goes black and back to lock screen

I had the same problem at first. Then one day the listing of all my apps disappeared. I did a refresh and lost a lot of programs but the files were still there. Then I noticed that the problem with the apps had fixed itself and they worked. My feeling is that the initial install wasn't complete and the refresh completed the install. Recently, after loading my Epson printer's CD, the apps once again disappeared. Had to do a system restore. Now I am having trouble with my screen just being black and not coming on at all...even after a reboot. Win8 has a lot of problems.

I can enable auto turn off screen after period of time in control panel. But i found in lock screen, the monitor won't turn off automatically even if the time period is expired. Is there any way to solve this?

A:How to enable auto-turn-off screen in lock screen

If you haven't, try setting the screen saver (can use blank) and set it to the same time as the monitor time out.
