Hi, first post here by a rather happy Lenovo Yoga 13 + Windows 8 user.
As the topic says, is it possible to have the lockscreen turn on automatically after a few minutes?
As it is now I can only get to the lock screen after waking up the computer from the screen saver. I would like to have it configured so that the traditional screen saver is bypassed and it goes straight to the lock screen and stays there forever until I swipe it up.
I think the lockscreen is a very beautiful feature and it's great to see all these small notifications. It would be wonderful to just be able to glance at my computer and seeing these notifications without actually having to touch it.
I feel it's kind of useless to only see the lock screen while you're actually logging in, because then you'll see your notifications anyway on your start screen.
The easiest way is to right click your account icon on top right of Start Screen and Lock it.
Don't know of a way to auto lock.
I did an upgrade from Win 7 , and Screen Saver / Turn off display after 5 mins was working under Win 7 64 bit
As my title suggest Screen Saver / Lock screen Slideshow / Turn off display after 5 mins are not working under Win 10
The Lock screen Slideshow is there when Win 10 starts but only shows ONE image, never moves to another.
THINGS I've done so far to get any of these working ...Screen Saver / Lock screen Slideshow / Turn off display after 5 mins
I’ve turned off all the Wake on lan functions
Tried different folder/ images for the lockscreen Slideshow ,window spotlight and picture
Tried to set new power options , was able to get SLEEP to show up in "Start" as it was not there before, but once click , the display DID turn off, but wouldn’t turn back on with mouse movement keyboard presses, had to do a hard reboot. Win 10 started without issue and the SLEEP mode was no longer aviable via the power "start" menu.
Anyone have a clue how to get all of these working. Really would like my display to turn off after 5 mins , and the Screen saver to work , the Lockscreen I'm not fussed about
Screen saver works on each profile.
Screen saver will Not activate at lock screen or login screen.
Have used gpedit.msc to enable screen saver and to set screen saver time out.
have resorted to sleeping my monitor after 5min.
I would like to use the screen saver instead.
I want to lock the screen saver for all users because I don't want them to change it and only the administrator can.
Is there any idea to lock desktop properties??
You can do it through the local computer policy or an easier way is to use windows steady state
When my machine goes to screen saver it goes blank with the cursor in the middle and locks up. I reboot by shutting off and restarting. I have tried the properties on the desktop to turn off the screen saver and when I try to do anything with the screensaver the computer locks up. Help
Hello, it's possible to windows immediately initiate screen saver when I lock'im? (WINDOW KEY + L)? No matter how many minutes I put to initiate the screen saver. I want that it begin immediately after I lock windows. Just like GNOME does.
Thanks, if it's possible, I hope you guys help me.
I don't think its possible - try choosing the password option when the screensaver is interrupted and set the screensaver interval to 1 min.9 more replies
i want to make a shortcut on my desktop to activate the screen saver and also locks the computer at the same time?????????
For the screensaver, find the .scr file in C:\Windows\System32\ then create a shortcut to it with the -s flag. For example:
Target: C:\Windows\system32\[screensaver].scr -s
For locking the workstation, use:
C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation
Not sure you can do both in one, but I think you can set the screensaver to ask for a password afterwards, which has the same result.
I was wondering if anyone knew what settings I could change to lock the computer after it goes to sleep/screen saver kicks in (like XP Pro does). I just realized that after the screen saver and/or sleep kicks in, when I reactivate the computer, it doesn't revert to the windows logon screen (yes, the on resume, display logon screen is checked in the screen saver), it goes straight back into the account it was in.
I tried changing all kinds of security settings but to no avail. Anyone know a way around, or if this is a common issue?
PS - I set my logon screen to not show user names, so you need both the user name and password to access any account (and no-one can tell how many accounts are on the system), not sure if that "setting" is an issue to automatically go to the log-on screen after sleeping/screen saver. Help...thanks.

I recently upgraded to Windows 8.1, but it reset my custom lock screen image. I tried re-applying it but the lock
screen preview in the settings is stuck on a load loop. Does anyone know why that is and why it won't set my custom image as the new lock screen image?
i can't find the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Systemdata, folder,
in my laptop
how to get default lock screen images in 8.1? plz help me..
Please take a look at this link and it should solve your problem.
XP Service Pack 3
Screensaver is enabled and so is 'Display welcome screen when coming back from screensaver'.
This works most of the time, however on a regular basis the screensaver will resume to the following screen and just stay there forever.
The only thing to do is to press the power button, at which point a popup alerts that a user is logged in, do you still want to shut down.
I am aware of the Screen Saver setup and modify capabilities in the Personalization menu. I am also aware that there is a Preview button there also.
There is a program in the Windows system files that you can put on the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen. You can then click this Icon and manually start the Screen Saver.
I however (in my infinite stupidity) have forgotten the name of this program and where it is located. Can someone please tell me what its name is and where it is located?

I've been using Windows 10 for just over one year. For some reason the Lock Screen/Sign-in screen shows three users. All three are me in three iterations. I find also that when trying to save some excel and word documents I receive messages saying that i am not allowed to save to this folder or that folder. I am able to save to the desk top and then drag and drop the document into the folder that I need to place it in. I know that this must have something to do with "permissions". Not sure how to fix that. One of the accounts that shows up is the initial account that I created back when hotmail.com was around. Any ideas/advice on these issues? When i updated to Windows 10, pretty certain that i followed all of the instructions, although that has been over 1 year now. Thank you in advance...cheers and beers to all!More replies
I have a Dell 1750 Inspiron laptop that I use "as a desktop" as every piece of hardware is connected to it.
It runs with Windows 7 Home Edition. It has a 4gb memory and a 450gb hard drive which is less than half used.
I have the screen saver set to Photos and usually have a cut-in time of 1 hour idle.
The screen saver cuts in exactly when it should and scrolls through my photos for as long as the laptop is left idle.
However, as soon as I touch the mouse/keyboard, instead of reverting to the "normal" screen the photos disappear, the blank screen fades for a few seconds and then a message appears in a box, saying that the Photos Screen Saver is not responding, and gives the options of either close the program or wait for the programme to respond. Waiting doesn't seem to work so I have to click on close the programme and then cancel the statement that Windows will try to find a solution, because it doesn't!
I have tried to vary the time before the screen saver kicks in, anything from 1 minute to several hours but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
Can anyone help please?
Have you checked the timing for when the HDD turns off or Sleep or Hibernation kicks in [I disable both of those and lengthen the time on the HDD to several hours], Control Panel, Power Options?
The reason I mentioned the HDD is the symptoms you mentioned seem to apply. The screen saver could be in memory and not affected by the HDD until it's asked for something.

Hibernation in it self saves everything thats in RAM at the time the system is put into that mode. It should not lock the PC as that wasn't the state it was in before it hibernated. perhaps lock the PC before you push the hibernate button!
This is what someone else wrote in another topic: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/741250-windows-warning-message-win32-adware.html
"I booted my computer up today, and saw my background wasn't available anymore. Then I see the message, "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer". It says that Win32/Adware.Virtumonde and Win32/PrivacyRemover.M64 are on my computer."
I had the exact same problem but i followed the instructions that someone posted in that topic, these were the instructions posted by "drdrew1469":
"I just got through fixing this (I hope). What it did here was change the background and set the screensaver to the sysinternals bluescreen screensaver (which you may be seeing) while at the same time setting policies in the registry to disable the two aforementioned tabs in the Display properties window.

I have set up my Win 7 Pro 64-bit screen saver to bring up the password logon screen upon activation of the mouse/keyboard/whatever.
Late last week, whenever I moved the mouse or clicked the keyboard, the screensaver would go directly to the desktop, bypassing the logon screen. I went to the screensaver utility and unchecked and rechecked the 'On resume, display the logon screen' box, selecting 'Apply and OK' each time.
This would work for maybe two or three times and then go back to returning to the desktop.
I've run MalwareBytes, IOBit, and Norton and all come up virus/rootkit free.
There are a few seconds of "grace" time, meaning when the screensaver launches you have a few seconds to "wake it" and go back to your desktop without locking it.
I guess I can assume you're not talking about that, right?

Log On Screen Saver - Enable or Disable
Hello ZMan, and welcome to Seven Forums.
You will not be able to have a slideshow with the logon screen saver. As in the tutorial, it can only be a blank black screen if enabled. Anything else, and you get that message in the NOTE box at the top of the tutorial.
i was wondering if i can see any of my screen saver as my boot screen !!!
or do any thing to achieve that !!!
i really want to see my matrix screen saver when i turn my pc on !! i hope some genius of u can crack that !

I have a very strange problem, I'm stumped and would appreciate any help.
On my new HP6910 laptop, when my XP Pro SP3 (system default XP) Screen Saver comes on, the screen has a partial heavily corrupted copy of the bottom taskbar at the top of the screen (!) and when I ctrl-alt-delete and enter my password the taskbar at the bottom is missing all of its text but otherwise looks reasonable. The Oulook, Word, and other started tasks in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen have their icons, just no text, even if there is a group of them and you hover the mouse over the group and they expand. Most of them still work, but Windows Desktop Search (WDS) doesn't work and I have to close them and restart them. This seemed to start a few days after I installed WDS, added a DVI monitor to the docking station and the same day I installed Activesync 4.5. I've reinstalled WDS and removed my wallpaper but this didn't help, I'm about to reinstall Activesync but it takes a few hours to sync for the first time so I thought I would see if anybody had any other ideas before doing this.
All help is greatly appreciated!
I am having a very wierd issue with vista's screen saver. So basically when I leave the comp idle it goes into screen saver then turns off the monitor after 15 mins. Sometimes, more often than not, I come back and move the mouse and hit a few keys on the keyboard and nothing. The monitor wont come out of standby I try turning it off and back on, and nothing. I have the latest drivers for everything in my system and I checked the power management settings and they both are able to wake the computer up. I have a G15 keyboard and I keep the leds on and when this happens the leds are off and the lazer for the mouse is off too. Any suggestions as to what my problem is would be fantastic!

I am having a problem setting a screen saver on my new Windows 10. When setting a screen saver and selecting "Preview" or setting a screen saver and having it go to it at the appropriate time limit, the screen saver displays properly.
However, when hitting a key or mouse move or click, instead of returning to Windows, it displays a black screen and locks. I have tried everything, at the black screen, to return to windows without any luck, other than manually turning the PC off and rebooting.

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.
I downloaded a free sample of a screensaver from digiscapes.com just to have a look - and then uninstalled it. Now I constantly get a pop up window telling me I'm running an unregistered Buddy Saver screensaver. My husband reinstalled and uninstalled for me, but I'm still living with this Buddy Saver annoyance. How do I get rid of it ?? (I also sent them an email weeks ago to ask what to do but no response). It is probably running at startup. Go to start > run and type in msconfig and enter. Go to the startup tab and uncheck the item for it listed there.

Hello. I am trying to fix an HP G62-367DX Notebook PC.
Operating sys: Win 7, 64bit, AMD Turion(tm) 530II Dual-Core Processor, 4GB, 2.50GHz. I had this laptop since December of 2010 and on June of 2013 is when I used my notebook PC and was initially of no use. I have been working on my laptop on and off since. I am not afraid to open the sucker up and get this thing up and running.
The problem started out with what most ppl call it, the "blue screen of death". Like most ppl, I did ignore the blue screen and did a restart which brought me to the normal Windows screen and then it would start back up just fine. I found this in Device Manager's (Hidden Files):
Non-Plug and Play Drivers
-! Security Processor Loader Driver
I am not sure if it has anything to do with what it was the blue screen situation, but I tried searching on the net on what it all meant and to see if I was able to fix it, but before I was able to do something about it, the blue screen kept popping up and it was getting worse.
The problem progressed to where on Windows startup it would just stop there, blue screen would pop up and of course I had to restart it and do an F8 key press for Safe Mode. I had to work on Safe Mode for a good couple of weeks before I can figure out the problem/s. I believe I had went into the system and found out it had something to do with some kind of error... *sigh* I did write it down, but that was like a month ago and I am unable to locate my ... Kind of screen glitch that appears before windows 8 lock screen appears at start /restart and a notable delay in starting/restarting time than with my 1st win8 install.
I think this appeared after I installed my windows 7 back ( dont ask me why..)( a clean install) and installed my win8 back again.I dont think Ive done them corectly:
I couldnt install win 7 it in C ,neither to format that partition because of this message [Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks] and an error code 0x0000 smth... while attempting to format the C. I could only manage to instal windows 7 back after deleting all of the partiton and now I have a single C one.
When Ive tried to reinstall windows 8 these days I expected to see only a partiton where to put my windows but instead there were other minor ones too ( they dint shown during my win7 install) like they appear now if I open disk management .
So now I have that glitch when starting windows 8. I dont know how to describe it: its a black screen -with that windows 8 doted loading wheel -partially covering my Motherboard logo screen ( that screen at startup with bios setup, boot menu options etc).I say partially becuase I can see parts of my motherboard screen on left and right but they are kinda shredded and disolved into scraps. This appears after the clean Motherboard screen witht those options I mentioned above. On my 1st win 8 inst... Read more

If you're using the official release of Windows 8 Enterprise trial, you'll need to activate it. PC Settings doesn't have an entry to Activate, so you'll need to go to the Desktop to do so. The little Action Center icon on the lower right hand side (a little flag) should have a red X. Click on it, and it should say you need to activate. Do so, and you'll get those customizing features unlocked.

Whenever my laptop wakes up from sleep and shows the lock screen, I click and type in my PIN as normal. But on the lock screen at the top right, there's a Cortana box usually giving an example of what I can do, like 'tap and say remind me to water the plants when I get home'.
The problem is this box stays on the screen after the computer is unlocked, and displays semi-transparently in the top left over all other windows, with the only way to remove it is to double click, have a Cortana window display full screen and then close it.
I'd like to find a way of either fixing this or disabling Cortana from the lock screen altogether as I never use this feature. Any tips would be appreciated.
These aren't very important problems, but I'm just curious why this happen after Anniversary Upgrade.
- When I start my PC or when I shutdown/restart, in the log screen there isn't my profile image. Just the generic blank one.
The image is still present when I click on Start button on desktop and in Control Panel. I also tried to set it again.
- I prefer a "blank" lock screen background as I had before, with no panorama pictures or nothing. How can I remove it?
While the Windows 7 desktop background pictures fill the screen, the screen saver photos do not.
Is there a way to have the latter fill the screen as well?
Welcome Rambling One,
Are your pictures big enough to fill the screen? I can get mine to fill the screen but the pictures I'm using are also Wallpaper size.
Slowly but surly I am getting the system up and running...now we are in the fine tuning stage...
I now have the screen saver working, but there is one slight catch, after the screen saver has been on for a while and I move the mouse, the screen clears and what is left behind is the log on logo and I have to click on that to get back to the primary screen,
How do not have to go to the log off screen and just continue with my screen/window that I was on before the screen saver kicked in.
There is a checkbox in the screensaver settings that needs to be unchecked, see image below.
Screen Saver Password Protection -Enable or Disable
I found out that Update 1 (KB2919355) causes logon screen and lock screen issue.
Custom background for both screens are not displayed, instead of custom background there is a solid black background.
Uninstalling this update rolls back this issue and both screens are displayed correctly. Confirmed on Win 8.1 Pro x64.
I'm gonna report it to Microsoft.
I have the same problem on my laptop.
After the Update 1 my Lock Screen is completely blue and it's not showing the image anymore, I can see the icons but not the pic.
In addition to that, when I choose to reboot the laptop I can only see the loading circle and not the phrase "rebooting".
Since the latest update (It introduced the slide show of pictures on the lock screen. I think it is KB3124200) I haven't been able to press Enter or Space or any other key for that matter to "slide up" the lock screen photo to get to the password screen. I've looked through the lock screen settings, but I see nothing that could prevent this. Does anyone know why this is and a possible fix for it?
Thanks in advance!
Okay, I think I've figured out a solution.
What I did was right click the desktop and choose "Personalize", then choose "Lock Screen" and switch "Show Windows background picture on the sign-in screen" to "Off".
I have no idea as to why this would change anything, but it did solve my problem, and I don't need the Windows logo background, so I'm happy!
Hope this help
So I disabled the lock screen as it's just another unnecessary click to login, but what I want to be able to do is customise the background image of the login/ctrl+alt+del screen. I know you can change the "accent" colour but I don't want to use a solid colour. How do I go about this?

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. Everytime or almost everytime I click on an app or go to the desktop and try to get on IE 10 (desktop version), my screen flashes and goes black for a few seconds then returns me to the screen with the space needle, then I click on it and it signs me back in. When I try to use Google Chrome, the websites freeze up on me. I don't want to have to reinstall/reformat as I paid $40 for this for one, and secondly, I don't want to have to repurchase Office 2010 as my licenses ran out. Please help. I ran every update that comes up and restart, but this doesn't change this issue. I'm hoping there will be a patch or service pack or some update that will fix this. Any ideas why it does this and any way to fix it without reformatting?
I had the same problem at first. Then one day the listing of all my apps disappeared. I did a refresh and lost a lot of programs but the files were still there. Then I noticed that the problem with the apps had fixed itself and they worked. My feeling is that the initial install wasn't complete and the refresh completed the install. Recently, after loading my Epson printer's CD, the apps once again disappeared. Had to do a system restore. Now I am having trouble with my screen just being black and not coming on at all...even after a reboot. Win8 has a lot of problems.2 more replies
Hi was wondering if others experience this. Trying to figure out the cause and if there is a fix.
When I turn on or restart my computer after the teal windows logo with the spinning wheel the screen will flash off quickly then come back on black and then 10 seconds later show the lock screen.
It's kind of annoying to have this delay happening and wondering if it's normal or something that can be fixed.
That sounds normal to me. The only variation might be "how long" you pause on the black screen (while your boot is being processed). Now, for some, that black screen might flash for only a few seconds but for others, it could last quite some time. My advice is to do nothing and live with it.
I can enable auto turn off screen after period of time in control panel. But i found in lock screen, the monitor won't turn off automatically even if the time period is expired. Is there any way to solve this?
If you haven't, try setting the screen saver (can use blank) and set it to the same time as the monitor time out.3 more replies
How can I change the windows 8.1 login screen (that comes with a password) and replace it with any image? I'm not talking about the LOCK screen. I searched a lot , some websites told me to edit the group policy and add a custom image here
But this method did not work. What should I do? I don't need any third party paid software. I require a free method.
I recently purchased the Aspire R. I established a 4 digit pin code to unlock my Aspire. Until recently, when I tapped on the field to input my pin a on screen number keypad would appear in which I could use to type in the pin and unlock my laptop. That keypad has somehow dissapeared. I'm hoping someone might be able to help me change a setting or do something to get the on screen keypad to reapear when I tap on the field of the lock screen. Thank you in advance.More replies

I decided to let it be in that situation, the problem started while trying to install applications, the applications were installed incompletely or partly installed, so I decided to take ownership of the whole drive "C:". I think this occurred because of Sharing rules, anyway I took ownership of the entire drive except some sys files such as: hiberfil.sys etc. Before doing this the whole operating system was working properly but after doing so, my above mentioned problems solved, but after that, my lock screen image has gone "Blue"! and I guessed that ownership causes the problem, so I tried so many solutions, including reinstalling a fresh copy of windows or trying the method mentioned in this link, but nothing changed . first I'll share my current lock screen image to show you I've changed it, after I'll share a shot of my lock screen blue image! plz help me this is so annoying!
I'm having a weird issue.
Every time I Restart my Laptop, the Lock Screen does not show the Welcome Screen and skips directly to the User Account login screen. Actually, it shows a darkish blue screen for a couple of seconds and then jumps to the user account login.
When I use the logout function or the shutdown (and I power it back on) everything works normally.
I have ran SFC / Scannow in windows (8.1 by the way).
Any suggestion ?
I may have misunderstood what you are asking but does this tutorial help?
In Windows 8 and 8.1 there are two "Lock" screens.
The user lock screen is the one that displays when a user locks the PC while still signed in to Windows, and when the user is selected on the sign in screen, times out, and returns to the lock screen. Each user is able to change their lock screen background image to an image of their choice. The default Lock screen image is the one that displays when there are no users currently signed in to Windows or selected on the sign in screen.
See full tutorial here - Lock Screen Default Background Image - Change in Windows 8
This might be a stupid question but I havent found a solution for it myself, probably looking in all the wrong places.. would like to be able to have my computer go to the lock screen after an alotted time of inactivity without turning off the screen itself as in the power settings. I usually have screen shutoff/sleep set for longer periods but would like the screen to lock sooner. Is this possible?
If you have Pro you can edit the local security policy to do it.9 more replies

I have dropped it once or twice from at most a 3ft fall inside a padded case. I mostly use my computer for school work, some gaming, extensive video/photo editing, internet browsing. I've installed some debatable programs but have been installed long ago. Most of my programs included Microsoft Office, Adobe suite, Steam, iTunes, uTorrent, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, Winrar, VLC, etc. But are now gone due to the refresh I had just done last week for prior problems, but still experience problems.
I recently been having issues with my computer where it just won't respond at all. Like today, I had it working for a few hours, but then went out and left my laptop on the lock screen, and came back to it being completely stuck. Completely stuck as in, no keys or clicks would unlock the screen to the login prompt. However, my cursor was fully able to move around the screen, and my caps/num lock buttons work as they display the lights enabling/disabling them. The time when it was stuck was 8:03pm, but the clock was stuck on 7:55. But on the bottom of the front of the laptop, the HDD orange light is not lit up at all, which I believe suggest that the HDD is not reading/properly reading. Oddly e... Read more
Sounds like one too many drops killed the computer. You may get lucky and find a local mom & pop shop that will fix it cheaper then Sony.3 more replies
My friends dv7-1135nr is not posting. The num lock and caps lock led light will flash once every 2 seconds at the same time. According to HP this issue is a " not functional" cpu. I am ordering another cpu for 16.00 off ebay because this is cheaper opposed to ordering another board. Anyone else have this issue? And if so did you fix it ?

Hi. I recently bought a new R5-417T laptop, and in the process of personalisation found no intuitive way to disable the caps-lock or num-lock notifications. (Windows 10 btw) ^Notification in question^ How would I go about disabling this? I've tried looking in the BIOS, in regedit and some mythical "Launch Manager" program bundled with older acer laptops that I can't find a working version for.

I just did a clean install of 7 to fix errors with my laptop, and it fixed one, but not the other main issues,
My caps lock, and number lock button on the keyboard don't have a light on it and the pop up that is supposed to pop up doesn't show up on screen.
I figured by doing a clean install it would all magically appear again... I was wrong, I have tweaked everything I could think of looking/trying to change setting from the keyboard in control panel, (including messing around with ease of use) and Gateways so called "support" area was of no help, as well as googling the issue has led me down a path of useless tips, I have also looked on this forum for help.
Any help in this area would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Ok I've been suffering this issue with Windows 10 for as long as I can remember, and it's stopping me using it as the primary OS.
In short I have two, intermittent issues which nothing I do seems to resolve.
1: After waking up from sleep and typing my username password and hitting return, the screen goes black. Cursor moves, Windows + P operates (Screen options do appear from the right) but doesn't actually make any difference, and I'm stuck having to hard reset because ctrl alt del doesn't work either. This isn't an every time issue, hence googling seems to fail miserably because all the examples are people getting it every time. This, for me, is a 3 in 10 regularity.
2: Logging a user off occasionally sees the lock screen ... locking up. Ironically. Mouse moves, and power button DOES work but that's all that works.
These issues are plaguing me and I just cannot fix them - endless googling has left me empty handed, and I've tried disabling SLI. No help. I've tried disabling apps. No help. Nothing I do makes any difference and event viewer doesn't seem to reveal anything useful either.
Anyone got any idea how I can resolve this?

How do I get the ending screen to be the same as the lock screen?
I love the piano keyboard stock lock screen but can't stand the Seattle Space needle screen.
I logged into the hidden Administrator account and sure enough, the lock screen was the Seattle Space needle screen. I changed it there thinking that would fix the issue but no such luck. The issue, I am assuming has to do with the administrator account.20 more replies
How can I get rid of it? It's there every time I lock, and it's getting extremely annoying. I liked it before 8.1 when I could lock my computer and watch a slideshow of images while I did other things in the room, but now it's cut in half by this ugly keyboard and for the life of me I can't seem to find it. I'm using a desktop PC with Windows 8. I don't even have a touch-screen. Help, please!
Does clicking on the X at the top right corner of the Touch Keyboard close it?
Please help. My system is XP Home on a Toshiba Laptop, refurbished. I can't get my screen saver to turn on. Have tried changing settings, downloading and installing new one. Never turns on. Thanks for the help

How do you simply add a screen saver in 2K. There is no add on the sreensaver tab in the display utliity. The file I want to add has a .scr extension.
Copy it to the winnt\system32 folder. As long as it does not need any additional dll files, it should run. Select the screensaver in the normal manner.
I've tried getting rid of this SS from drop down list but its still there..ive deleted the .scr file from system32 & uninstalled it..heres link to screen shot show what i mean its 1 highlighted called united airlines saver http://i44.tinypic.com/2uo16vn.jpg

Is the screensaver a generic xp scr saver or a third party one.

Hello & welcome to TSF ,
do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it
if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system
if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to slipstream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create
this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )
this also applies to (sp3 )
now if you do have the Windows XP cd with sp2 please follow these steps as long as sp3 is not installed
performing a (sfc) system file checker
It is a scan that checks the core files & dlls of the (os) operating system and replaces them if they are corrupt or missing with the correct original version
#1 then select (run) , then press enter
a window will open
#2 type in ( cmd ) then press enter
another window will open
#3 type in ( sfc )then press enter
another window will open
#4 type in (sfc /purgecache) then enter / your pc will work like crazy / this helps in rebuiding the cache file (notice the space between (sfc & /)
#5 type in (sfc /scannow ) then press enter ( notice the space between the (sfc & / )
now a scan will start , have your (Windows... Read more
I use my pictures as a screen saver, but it won't ever turn off, I don't want it to sleep because it takes to long to boot up again, any other suggestions? I have Vista. I didn't have this problem with windows xp. I want into prefrences and just told it when to stop the screen saver.
I don't really understand what it is you want, I have my Pictures folder as the Screen Saver and it is set to activate after 10 mins of the computer being idle all other power savings are set to Never, whenever I want to use the computer again it's just a question of moving the mouse and the monitor is back to what it was either the desktop or if I left a program or forum open it would be back to that.28 more replies
I can't get my computer to run a screen saver, went thru all the steps and hit apply but ti still won't come up......arrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhhh!.........is this a vista problem???

The screen saver does not work when you use a Microsoft wireless pointing device on a Windows Vista-based computer
I'm running XP home. On screen saver tab in the display control panel, when "Windows" is selected as the screen saver, if you select the "settings tab", then the "general tab", it states that: "The system agent must be active in order for you to display the screen saver immediately by moving the mouse pointer to a corner on the screen."
I can't figure out where or what the system agent is and a search in windows "help" yields no match for "system agent" Does anyone know how to activate it?

I posted the other day and was told that my post had been moved to a different location, the link was broken so here goes again.
Computer had gotten real slow so after trying a few things (running malwarebytes, ccclean, register??) I decided to dump everything and start over.
Loaded up programs and things were a lot faster but the computer still didn't seem right. At times in typing, the letters would not type or a differnt letter typed.
Also internet explorer won't open so I have to use windows update to get on line, when I click explorer, internet properties comes up even off of Start programs internet explorer.
My computer (after apx. 5 minutes of non use) makes me log in again.
Ran malwarebytes, security essentials, so I'm not sure what is up.
Any help would be appericated
My friend has two drives in his computer.........one is the boot drive with windows 7 as the OS and the other is the one he stores all his photographs on and other data.
How can the screen saver for windows 7 use photographs direct from the storage hard drive? or will he have to copy all his photographs onto his boot drive to facilitate this.
Thanking you in anticipation of your help.
RIGHT click an empty spot on the desktop.Choose Personalize.Choose Screensaver.Click the drop down arrow under Screensaver, select Photo Gallery.A preview will be shown in the box. Since this will be from the default setting, pictures on the C drive, he will need to click Settings/Browse in order to choose the storage drive pictures folder. After he does that, click Save.If he does not want to use all the photos, he can create a folder and copy the photos he does want to use to that folder. He can then navigate to that folder using the method I described.5 more replies
I have a P3, 650hz, and 64MB ram. This pc had a donloaded screensaver loaded on it and then it started locking up during when the screensaver was enabled. I removed the screensaver and put one of NT's default screen saver on. It does the same thign when it is activated it just stops and then if you press the keyboard it will come back up but is really slow. I have reloaded SP6 on it and didn't help
Hiya and welcome
I use Win2000 but lets hope it works for NT. Go to Run and type MSINFO32. If this does not open, go to Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Information.
On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. copy/paste the list.
Also, can you tell me the name and/or the site where you got it?
The screen saver is not working,
when we go to the screen saver setting - there is a message - "The screen saver can't run because it requires a newer video card or which require Direct 3D"
But it was working a day ago.
Here are some items to check:
What graphics card do you have?Do you have a wireless mouse or keyboard? If so make sure it has they have the latest drivers installed.Have the latest graphics driver installed for it.Refresh or update your WEI score.
Is it just that screen saver, or is it all screensavers including the default one from Vista?
Hope this helps for now,
So, I made a 3D animation (using <anim8or, FREE) for my teacher to use as a screensaver. The thing is, i don't know how to do that second part.
The file is an AVI and that is the only filetype I am capable of without a converter (wich I am currently lacking...), so if tat's a problem, darn.
If you're like me, then you're confused about what I just said.
I have an AVI that I want to make into a screensaver. How do I do that?
EDIT: After doing a google search, I found something... but it sucks. Any reccomendation of the "Avi/MPEG to Screensaver" program (.exe file is avimpeg.exe) will result in a dead end on my part. Seing as every search result i checked was for this particular file.

Is it necessary to use a screen saver when you're going to be away for awhile or can you just use the power setting to shut off monitor after 20 minutes. Which is better? I heard that screen savers use a lot of resources. Thanks. Dori
Screen savers were developed to protect older CRT monitors from "burn in." They are unnecessary for modern monitors. Even for the older CRTs, a blank screen was fine, except that they did not have the power saving options we now have.
So, yes, using the power settings for the monitor to save power is best.
I have been having issues with my screen saver. No matter what the time I set it for it will not turn on. When I test it, it works just fine. I also have the computer set to turn off the monitor after a set time and that too is not happening. I was noticing that when ever there were updates to be installed that it wouldn't go to screen saver but there are no updates to be installed right now. I do not have a wireless mouse or keyboard everything is via USB.
hi and welcome to the forum
have a look here in brinks tutorial to see if you have missed anything? How to Enable or Disable Screen Savers in Windows 7 and Vista
Okay, sounds silly, but after multiple attempts to activate my screen saver on my new HP p6649c running Win7 with an ATI Radeon HD4200 graphics card, I can't activate it.
I've rebooted multiple times. I've reset the screen saver settings multiple times, clicked on "apply" and "OK" and no dice. I've set the options to my own pictures as well as the default screen saver images. I have also checked the power management settings but they appear normal. Nothing seems to affect it so the monitor just sits with my desktop on perpetually.
Are there some settings on the monitor itself I should modify?
I removed your other post. Do not post multiple threads for the same problem.
Next when you set a screensaver, are you using an account with admin priv?
What pw management have you selected ie balanced, high performance, or a custom one?
I have my new laptop set to go to screen saver after 1 minute of inactivity and password protected (you know, to keep people out of it when I walk away). I am noticing that it will start to go into screen saver, and then stop. I went to lunch and came back an hour later and no screen saver. Any thoughts??

In Windows 10 the screen saver option is bured within the lockscreen settings under "screen saver settings". It still doesn't look like it has been updated since 8.1 or maybe even Windows 7. In this day and age with the quality of displays there is no real reason to use a screen saver anymore like there was in the 1990s.
Iwanted to post a poll but the option at the bottom is just a little text box and I'm not sure if i am missing something here or i just don't have that ability.
So, do you still use a screen saver and why or why not?
I don't. I just set my screen to turn off after a given amount of time and then to have it go to sleep. I really don't see any reason to use it and as for aesthetics it just looks dated and boring.
The last time I used a screensaver was when I used Windows 7 back in 2012. I just let me screen get dark after a while and then have the PC go to sleep.1 more replies
