Could use some help on how to allow a user to set their default browser permanently even with IE11 being set via Group Policy as the usual default.

For logistical reasons, we are still on IE11 instead of using Edge for our default browser - mostly because our software hasn't been 100% tested with Edge and to avoid overall confusion in having made the jump as a company to Windows 10 recently.

I successfully created a default configuration associations .xml file and it is pushing IE11 as the default.

However, knowing we have some users who would like to use a browser other than IE11 and let it be their default, we're trying to accommodate them while still enforcing the policy in place. Additionally, we don't want to 100% dissuade users from
utilizing Edge, so we haven't tried removing it from public visibility within the OS.  The users in question are local admins on their machines and should, in theory, be allowed that capability.

Any suggestions?

We have Windows 10 Pro on a laptop.  We want to set the default browser to Internet Explorer 11 (rather than the default, Edge).  I am familiar with the process of setting "Default apps" in Settings/System in Win 10.  When I choose
"Web browser," I see Internet Explorer as an option.  When I choose IE by clicking on it in the "Choose an app" window, the change does not occur.  The Default apps screen still shows Microsoft Edge as the default browser.
I should note that the same thing happens when I try to select "Outlook 2016" as the default email program on this screen (nothing changes).
Thanks for any help you can offer with this frustrating problem.

For curiosity I checked my XP to see what it said was my default browser.

sSart>Control Panel>Set Program Access and Defaults>Custom>Expand

I got this :-

I have Chrome as my default browser. Why does the Windows panel not show it ?

A:Checking Windows XP for Default Browser

Start>Run
Entering "www.google.com", Windows opens Chrome, which means  that Windows does recognise that Chrome is my  default browser, although the default selection panel does not show Chrome as being checked..

If it works as shown with no browser nominated as default, then  why have these alternative browsers listed as a default choice ? "Use my  current Web browser" appears to be sufficient.

Hi,
I've been using Windows 8 since the Developer preview and I've had no problems with it until now.

I recently got fed up with Firefox (for being too slow, and buggy). so I installed Chromium (not chrome. Chromium, the open source version of Google chrome without that spyware Google puts in it's browser)

But I have a big problem with it - I can't set it as my default browser. If I go to the settings and and click the big button that says "Make Chromium your default browser" all I get is this.

I've seen many tutorials about adding default software, but for some reason chromium isn't listed in the "default apps" section of control panel.

Is there a way to navigate to a certain .exe to add it as a default?

I'm running on windows 8 and would like to set my default browser to nothing whatsoever or a junk program. My aim is to make it so that whenever malware or any program attempts to open a browser nothing whatsoever happens.

Is this possible, through editing the registry in some way, and will it have the effect I'm aiming for?

A:Windows 8, how to set default browser to nothing or a junk program

Malware would still easily be able to open a browser or any other program even if you change the default to nothing or redirect the default setting to something else. Your best bet would be to install a good quality antivirus to detect and block any malware in the first place.

I used the free Windows 10 upload from Microsoft to update my computer from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Windows 10 was working great, then all of a sudden a couple of days ago, I kept getting fatal error messages, my computer was connected to the Internet but programs kept telling me I wasn't. I could not print, could not open my email in Yahoo. I would open Internet Explorer and the page would be completely blank but yet I was connected to the internet.
My computer is hard connected to my modem, not wireless. Called my internet provider and they could not find any problems with my connection.
I tried all the suggestions on Microsoft's Forum, like deleting SpyHunter and using my command prompt and running DISM and SFP (I think, can't remember) but they kept coming back no problems found.
So today I decided instead of using Internet Explorer, I would use Google Chrome. It worked, no problems!! So I set my default as Chrome and now all my problems, so far, are gone. Can anyone explain this phenomenon to me?

A:Had to make CHROME my Default Browser in Windows 10

You are lucky! If I set any browser other than edge to be the default, I get all sorts of problems and error messages. So I have to leave it set to edge. I then use Firefox, as I have not used IE for the last 10 years due to its total lack of work-ability. Edge is just the same, but if you ask Cortana a question it always answers in Edge. Why does Microsoft not just get out of the browser business, and leave it to people who know how to construct a browser? Incidentally, Cortana will help if I type in the text box, but does not seem to have any language for British English that I can find, so there is no chance of "Ask Cortana" using a microphone.

I would not normally come whining and crying to you folks but I am not able to solve this one myself.

This is a new install of Windows 10- done yesterday and Firefox was installed today.

Using Firefox or Default apps in Windows 10, I cannot make Firefox the default browser. Giving the instruction in Firefox, nothing happens. In Windows 10 Default Apps when I select Firefox, it kicks back to default and has a message "Reset to Microsoft Recommended Defaults".

A Windows 10 computer about 5 feet away from me has Firefox as the default browser but it was done in July.

Google was no help so far so do any any of you experts have an idea what may be happening?

As always, I will be forever in you debt.

Hi

Lately I upgraded to Windows 10 1607. It seems that whenever I open the default apps window (and only that window), the taskbar icons are blinking and I can't change the default browser to Firefox (I'm using the portable version). It's in the list but when I select it, Edge is re-selected and the icons keep blinking. If I select Internet Explorer, it is selected and the icons stop blinking.

I guess that because Firefox is portable, it does not appear in "set defaults by app", so I can't use this solution I read on the internet. I don't remember having this problem before with Windows 10.

Any ideas?
Thanks

So the problem started at September 26. My Default Browser (Chrome) began opening new windows randomly, all of them opened in Google's home page (my default home page) and all the tabs I open also redirect there. Any other browser I use also redirects the tabs to the home page but does not open new windows, only the default one does. I've tried everything, every single program to remove malware and such I can remember (malwarebytes, hitmanpro, zemana, ADWcleaner, you name it, I tried it.) I installed and uninstalled Chrome (the browser where the problem started), re synced it, reset it to factory settings...reset my modem, nothing works and the problems keeps happening. Google Forums haven't given any response that helps so far. Either my Google Chrome is infected or the problem may have reached the BIOS since it persisted after I formated my Hard drive, and changed the hard drive from my laptop and not even that worked as the problem returned. What should I do?

The hard drive I had when this started had Windows 7 home premium, i formatted it and reinstalled windows, and the problem came back. I changed for my original hard drive that has windwos 10 pro and the problem is there. So what I think (since I tried another computer on my internet and I didn't sign in my google account and had no problems) is that it's either my google account that is infected or the problem may have reached the Bios. What can I do? I would please appreciate any help you can give me.

can see what I mean.

Then we I click blue button to choose default browser and choose IE new window is opening which looks like Edge - full screen mode with address bar on the bottom of the screen.

Two questions then:
1. How to fix it that IE will remember default browser and not ask each time for this
2. Is there any Edge browser on Windows 8.1 ?

Hi All,

I have a problem where I run Google Chrome as my default browser for my Windows 7 application but in a certain number of applications, Internet Explorer open automatically. A typical place where this happens is if I go to the Windows 7 "Windows Update" from System and Security in the Control Panel, and select "Find Out More" from the bottom box with the description of Get updates from other Microsoft products. It launches IE8 rather than Chrome. These are the things I know:
* I go to chrome options and it reports that it is the default browser
* Chrome acts as the default browser for 99% of the times I need a browser
* I need to keep IE inistalled because a couple of corporate applications cant run in Chrom (even though I have the IE extension for Chrome)
* I haven't configured IE so maybe it will become out of date and a security hazard.

If anyone can recommend how to fix this without blowing away IE8 it would be appreciated.

So yesterday automatic Windows update installed IE10, today I noticed that links in certain applications open in IE10 instead of my configured default browser, which every link from this or any other application used to open in before that update and the reboot that followed the update.
I checked the Default Programs section in the system control panel, expecting maybe Microsoft wanted to get themselves in any more trouble with the EU and changing the default to IE. This was not the case however, all the associations were still pointing to the configured default browser, I noticed however I could not uncheck the defaults already set.
So despite the obvious configuration being correct, links would still open in IE10 even after yet another reboot.
I went ahead and checked the registry associations, and found that http(s) protocol as well as htm(l) filetypes were associated with Internet Explorer with various EditFlags set (presumably to prevent changing them through the user interface, or to ignore the user interface settings).

Seriously Microsoft? Don't you have enough trouble yet?

I'd avoid IE10 and uninstall the update. It's riddled with bugs.

Hello, B.C.

My english is not 100% perfect, so I apologize.

After looking at how many problems were solved here I wanted to show mine, since yesterday, while not browsing or playing a fullscreen game, my default browser randomly opens, if I am playing a game, it minimizes it which makes it unplayable. And when I am browsing, no matter what browser is, my current tab switch to the browser home page, for example, In opera my home page is the speed dial, while browsing on a website e.j. wikipedia or any other, it changes to the browser home page for no reason, and that happens in all browsers, no matter what the default one is.

I do believe this is caused by a malware. I scanned my computer with both avast! Free Antivirus and Windows Defender and found nothing. I deleted opera and made firefox my default browser, it randomly opened constantly as it did with opera. I restored my system to 04/12/12 and the problem was still present (I also rebooted many times), however, as I deleted opera when restoring my system it was still there as my default browser but, when whatever was causing the problem attempted to launch it, it popped up a window telling that the launcher file could not be run, and so that window popped up randomly and it was actually the same thing, as when I deleted the launcher file, it stopped popping up the window (and a browser, because I had no default browser). Recently installed the latest version of Avant browser. I have set it not to be my default browser or to check if it is default on start up. I have Firefox set as my default browser and to check if it is on start up. The problem is every time I launch Avant and use it it makes itself the default browser. I know this because when I launch Firefox it says it's not the default and also if I wan to set it as the default. I do and when I use Avant again it steals the default browser setting again. I asked about this on the Avant forum and nobody has a solution. Most people on the Avant forum use that browser as their default so they don't care if it makes itself default. My desktop URL link is unable to access the Web based Admin console of my Netgear Router,
and various application "F1 / Help" buttons no longer give help when they need internet resources.

Previously I started with a conventional installed Firefox Browser,
but after erratic premature update releases chose the more stable Palemoon,
and placed the Portable variant on my secondary HDD because I dislike the junk that Mozilla browsers place on my system drive.
Everything worked perfectly.
I never recognized that once or twice a month only Firefox COULD meet a "Default Browser" requirement

With a brand new install of Windows on a new SSD,
and Palemoon continuing to work perfectly on original secondary HDD,
I thought all was well.
Now I know better.

My old desktop URL link to the Router was simply
http://192.168.2.1
I have now replaced that with a desktop shortcut to Palemoon plus argument
E:\Portable\PaleMoon\Palemoon-Portable.exe http://192.168.2.1
I may in future find more URL links that need replacing.

To access help on my applications I now have to firstly locate and secondly download relevant resources that I can quickly link to.

If I really have to then I will use a standard non-portable version of Palemoon,
But I am hoping for a clever trick that would make Windows use the Portable version as my Default Browser.

Regards
Alan

A:IE 8 as default browser.

you could browse for it.

press the browse button and navigate to c:\program files\internet explorer for a 32bit system, or c:\program files (x86)\internet explorer for x64 - then select the ieexplorer.exe

OR,

Am running I.E. 6, and use Firefox as my main browser. Recently had problems with Flashplayer download, conflicted with Firefox for some reason. Anyway, used IE 6 as main browser, solved Flash problem and went to make firefox main browser, well it won't let firefox override IE as main browser. Windows mail used to go through firefox, now it goes through IE and IE refuses to give up main browser. Clicked on make firefox main browser many times and the tab for IE does not say to give up the main browser. Do not like using IE for my mail handler, ever since I clicked on IE as main browser till flash got fixed now won't revert back. Any ideas would be appreciated. Have latest version of firefox installed.

I was and still am having trouble with Windows Exployer. I can open it, but after opening a couple of pages it logs itself off. This is still happening.

I tried using Firefox instead (now have both loaded) and have it listed as the Default, but I get an Unable To Connect error everytime now. Links try to open in Firefox and will not open.

Questions:
1) Why is Exployer logging off?
2) Why can't I connect with Firefox?
3) Which do feel is better?
4) How do I set up default browser? ( I can't remember how I did it)

Thanks for the help,

Hi Guys

I have recently upgraded to Windows 10 and am slowly getting used to the system. I have one problem in that the default browser is Edge 12.1 and it is not compatible with Trusteer Rapport. I have talked to IBM and they say there are no plans to make it compatible.

I have what might be basic questions. I know how to make google chrome my default browser but how to I change it back to Edge in the future when Trusteer becomes available, and how will making Google my default browser interact with Cortana and other Windows 10 functions?

This morning, as part of my maintenance routine, I ran Windows Update and RegCleaner.

Later, when reading E-mail, every link launched IE. I checked FF, Tools, Options, General for default browser and was assured that FF was default.

That was FF 1.5.0.0.11. I downloaded FF 2.0.0.3. Went to Add/Remove to remove FF 1.5. Task Mgr. opened, but nothing there, i.e., nothing running or not running.

Pushed big button on computer to shut down.

How do I stop IE from launching? bob j (DoctorJ)

You can set the default browser and even remove access to IE using "Set Program Access and Defaults". You should be able to find that in your Start Menu or under Add/Remove Programs.

A few weeks ago I changed my web browser from Internet Explorer to Firefox Mozilla. I have Mozilla set as my default browser, but whenever I log onto the web, it will always use Internet Explorer. Also, I have noticed that some items that I have in my Favorites Folder are listed as Internet Explorer and others are Mozilla.

What do I need to do to have Mozilla as my browser in every situation?

A:Default Browser

Not sure what you mean by "log on to the web" but it might be that your ISP requires the use of IE to do the log in. The IE favourites are those you imported, and the Mozilla are those you created/used with FF.
Cheers,
John

By the way, there is an extension for FF (View in IE) that will allow you to click on a link (or click on a page) and view it usinging IExpress. This would allow you, hopefully, to launch FF and then proceed with your login using IE.

I am having a problem whereby my default browser keeps changing from IE11 back to either Edge or blank. Can someone suggest why this might be happening or what program is causing it to change? I thought it maybe the Windows Auto Update that keep changing but am now not so sure of that since the last recorded update is back on 14th January and my default Browser got changed again last evening.
The only other programs that run regularly are Norton Internet Security and Norton Utilities. However, I have been through the settings of both of those programs and cannot detect anything that would indicate that they change the default Browser.
Also, in IE11 under the advanced tab I have ticked the option the "Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default web browser" and yet (a) I do not get a notification and (b) the default browser keeps getting changed.
Note: Please don't offer suggestions on how to set the default browser in Win10 because I am well versed in that operation having already performed it around 400~ times.
Any suggestions would be welcome - have already scanned this and other sites for solutions or those with the same problems but none seem to match my problem.

Hi, just wondering if you've successfully changed any other defaults and if so, is this the only one with which you have problems? There are some lengthy threads where people find their defaults revert to MS after restarting.

Sometimes this is found to be due to old versions of other apparently unrelated programs- example Winzip.
File associations revert to Windows default apps on every boot - Windows 10 Forums
(That's a short thread- there's a much longer one near it)

A:W10 won't allow to set default browser

Have you tried the following 2 methods ?

1. The Win 10 way:
Left click at Start button > Settings > System > left side, click Default Apps > right side, scroll to Web Browser > click the box > do you see Cyberfox in the list > if yes, click it.

2. The old fashioned way:
Right click at Start button > click Control Panel > top right, click View by > click either large or small > click Default Programs > wait for loading > click Set your default programs > left side, do you see your Cyberfox ?
If yes, click it > right side, click set this program as default > click OK when done.

Does any of the above help ?

Which browser are you switching to?If you're switching to FireFox, to make that your default, go to Tools>Options>Main TabOn the bottom of the window, there's a default settings and check the box to make sure that it checks to keep FireFox the default browser. Then click on the button next to it, "Check Now".If you're wanting to make sure IE is your default, if you've used FF at all, make sure that box is unchecked and open the IE browser. Click Tools>Internet Options>Programs TabAbout 2/3 of the way down, there is a box to check and then click on "Make Default". Have only just worked out a problem I have had for some time regarding a website not displaying correctly in IE.

www.mandurahhomes.com.au

I have a slideshow on the main page. I have never been able to get this to work in IE 7,8,or 9. Instead of showing the slideshow one image at a time, they line up down the page one after the other. My client, however, sees it working correctly on her computer in IE. For months I have intermittently scoured my computer to see if I had made some change to a setting that was causing this.

Today I tried somethig and it worked. I made IE the default browser and lo and behold the page is working as it should.
My default browser is Firefox. All other browsers when tested show the slideshow as it should be. I of course changed back to Firefox after the test!

Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

A:Default Browser - EI11

First you will need to see IE brought back from the dead of course and then simply go into the 10 "Start menu>Settings>System>Default apps" where you scroll down to the Web browser option to see IE11 set as the default. Since Edge will be forefront when first arriving after IE is back working for you you simply click on the rectangular box as the lines will appear and browse through the list of browsers if you have others installed or simply see IE on the spot to select that instead.

Since IE11 is still a feature but disabled and not in plain sight you will want to review the guide for this in order to get IE back up and running in Option Two. Internet Explorer - Install or Uninstall in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

I really need to know how to change my default browser.
I have windows 98.

Also, I wanted to switch to the Mozilla web browser and I downloaded the file, but when I try to use the browser, I get a message saying that website can't be found.

Can anyone help me?

A:How do I change my default browser?

I believe it's:
Start>Control panel>Internet options - then click on the "Programs" tab. Untick "Internet explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser" (or have this ticked if you want it as your default). After that go to the browser you want be the default browser.

For example, Mozilla or Netscape should be:
Go to EDIT>PREFERENCES
Expand "Advance" then click on "System"
There choose the appropriate file types you want to associate it with Mozilla or Netscape.

Without going into major detail, I'd like to ask a quick question. I use Windows Vista. I have been using IE7, but recently downloaded Mozilla Firefox 3. It was necessary for an online job. I have had multiple issues in both browsers and with Adobe Flash versions, etc. Question: Is it advisable to not designate either browser as the default browser? Is there any advantage in doing so? Does it sound like a possible fix to conflicts between using the 2 browsers?

Ok.....that was more than one question.

When you stop laughing or scratching your Please give feedback.

Thanks in advance.

Hi folks,

Background Reading

I am in need of some help, the company I work for have developed a custom web browser. It will be distributed in schools as part of our ?safe surf? initiative. The web browser has a limited interface i.e. no address bar and only points to our website which has a directory of ?porn-free? websites, which the student can click on. It does not allow students to type in a URL as that way they can access inappropriate material. All websites are pulled from the SQL database, and each website has a rating from 1 to 10. Each student has a username / password which is stored on the SQL server along with a Rating of 1-10. If a student has a rating of 5 then they can only view websites, which have a rating of 5 and below. To stop users from accessing the web from other software via hyperlinks etc they have been blocked by a software firewall.

The Problem

The student will be browsing the web through our web browser however when it comes to popup windows, or windows open in a new folder, Internet Explorer is currently being forced open, which is no use as it will be blocked via the firewall therefore a ?page cannot be displayed? error is shown. The default web browser has to be changed from Internet Explorer to our custom one. I have changed all file associations for .htm / .html etc but no luck. I need a solution that will work across Microsoft Windows 98/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003. I know this may be impossible but I could really do with some feedback.

I am having a problem setting IE as my default browser. I have selected it as default in 'Choose access and defaults'' but in "Set default programs" IE isn't listed as a option. Any help/advice?

A:Cannot set IE11 as default browser

Have you turned it off?,
Check via

ControlPanel >> programs >> then top LEFT features, another window will open and IE will be there,
It should be ticked, if not tick it, a reboot will be needed.

In Chrome, go to the tool icon in the upper right and click on Downloads/Download Folder. Here you can delete any Stuck Downloads.
To make FF your default browser, If you have FF already installed then go to Tools/Options/Advanced/Check to See if Firefox is my Default browser/Check Now.
If you don't have FF installed, use IE to download it.

I want to use firefox as the default browser. I have it at the top of 'start'. However when I click the link in email, outlook, Internet Exporer is coming up. How can i change it to firefox?

A:Changing the default browser

if you are using XP, you ought to be able to do this with [Start] -> [control panel] -> [Add or remove programs] -> [Set program access and defraults] and make the changes you want.

See the link below for screenshot.

I want to replace Comcast.net with Firefox as my default browser. I have followed the instructions on Firefox but neither of them worked. First, I tried doing it via Tools, Options, Main Panel, etc. Then I tried to do it in Control Panel: Add/Remove Programs, Set Program Access, Choose default browser. I clicked OK or Apply (which ever one is on that screen).

I shut down the computer to see if that would help but it didn't make any change. I still cannot make Firefox as my default browser.

What should I try next ?

I think I already know the answer but I wanted to know if there is a way to keep/launch ModernIE if you make something other than IE your default browser?

Although it has a mess for favorites I do like the simplicity of ModernIE and often prefer to browse using it from the Start screen. However, it does suffer from some rendering issues and sometimes I need to "view on desktop". I often find if ModernIE has rendering issues, so too will IE10. I would prefer that my default desktop browser be Firefox. When I set Firefox to my default, it kills any access to Modern IE and any IE icon leads to the desktop.

So is there no way to keep ModernIE as a browser if you have a different default browser? It isn't that I don't like ModernIE, I just want it as a secondary browser instead of my default.

A:Any way to keep Modern IE with another default browser?

Hello esspee,

Sorry, but no. Internet Explorer must be kept set as the default program to have the Metro IE10.

If it helps, you could switch to IE10 desktop mode from within IE10 Metro at anytime.
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...ktop-view.html
In addition, you can also set links to open to either IE10 desktop or Metro mode.

Hope this helps,

Have you tried this? Control Panel>Programs>Default Programs>Set Your Default Programs>Click onGoogle Chrome>Click on Choose Defaults for this Program>Check boxes for HTTP and HTTPS>Click on "Save" and close out open windows. Chrome should now be your default browser - at least it works for me.
