Q: Outlook 2010 - Mailto I want OUTLOOK not the MAIL APP

Hi there

In Outlook 2010 now if I click on a Mailto or email address link in an email I want outlook to open another window with the email address in the TO column.

Now the wretched Metro Mail app starts with the nag about Ms account etc etc.

Is there any way I can CONTINUE to use outlook like it USED to behave. I don't want or need that stupid Metro mail app -- whoever thought of or designed that particular app should be slowly drowned in a pit of Bovine excrement together with the Manager for allowing such a stupid piece of software "Out of the Door".

I've temporaily solved the problem by sending these emails from a W7 virtual machine - but I'd much rather have OUTLOOK work the way it's supposed to. I believe the same problem occurs in Office 2013 too --I'm not running Office 2013 but I believe it's similar (and Office 365 for that matter).

(Is there perhaps a default EMAIL program setting I can set up somewhere. I can't seem to find it -- probably haven't had enough BEER yet !!!!.).

Update --finally Found it -- you need to set the default in the MAIL APP as well to outlook. You need to set the default in OUTLOOK as well !!! . I'll post screenshots just in case someone else has a similar problem. (CTRL panel ==>Default programs)

Hello everyone,

When ever I click a mailto link in either Chrome, IE, Firefox and Opera it opens up a new chrome browser window. Before I installed windows 8 I had it opening up Outlook 2010 new email, now it opens up a new Chrome browser window.

How do I change it in windows 8 to when I click a link in any browser to open up Outlook 2010 new email as it did before?

Double check to make sure that Outlook is set as the default program for all of it's associations. Specifically the mailto protocol.

A long-standing problem I have is that email links with mailto cause the Outlook email to hang, and I have to kill the process. In other words, if I click on a person's email which has the form mailto:[email protected] I get the Outlook email form but the cursor turns into an hour-glass which does not go away until I kill the process.

My Outlook email uses the POP/SMTP of my ISP but I use my Yahoo email predominantly and would like the mailto to bring up my Yahoo email form so that I could write into it, not the Outlook form with the hour-glass!

Must my default email be the Outlook? How can I change this, or can I? But most of all, why do I always get this "hang" that I have to kill?

I have Windows XP SP2 Home Edition.

A:Mailto Hangs Outlook Mail

The mail to: function always brings up an email client such as Outlook on your desktop. You can change which one it brings up by opening Internet Explorer & at the top choose Tools > Internet Options > Programs, clicking the down arrow next to Email: as shown in the pic below, & selecting something other than Outlook. Click Apply > Ok & your done.You should then configure the newly selected program to check/send your email from your ISP & your Yahoo account. I recently bought a new PC, went from XP to Vista. The new PC comes with IE 7.0.6000

I use MS Outlook 2000 as my email program.

I want to set Outlook 2000 as my default email program when I click on a MAILTO function in internet explorer. Instead, it defaults to MS Mail (any time I click an email address online, it opens MS Mail instead of Outlook)

I remember in IE it was very easy to set the default programs for various functions. Now when I try to set the default program, I can't change it from MS Mail to Outlook. I got to:

Tools
>Internet Options
>>Programs tab
>>>Set Programs

I then get options to:
-"Set your default programs"
But I can't find a way to set Outlook as my mail program
or this:
-"Associate a file type or protocol with a program"
Then I find the MAILTO protocol, and select "change program" but MS Mail is my only option. I want the MAILTO protocol to open up Outlook 2000, not MS Mail.

Yesterday, my Outlook (2010) stopped retrieving e-mail from the Comcast server.  When I tried to fix it today, it still wouldn't work.  All the settings were correct, but it wouldn't retrieve my e-mail.  I deleted the account and recreated it.  Now, Outlook points to a new .pst file instead of my old Outlook.pst file, named [email protected]  To make matters worse, it doesn't delete the mail off the server.  Before, when I would open Outlook, it would download new message to my Inbox and delete them off the server.  The new messages would stay permanently in my Outlook inbox.  No more.  Now if I manually delete one through my Internet browser, it also deletes it out of my Outlook Inbox.  It’s as though the new account is just a window to the Comcast e-mail server.  I tried changing the Root Folder Path on the Advanced tab of the e-mail account settings to point to the location of my Outlook.pst folder, but that made no difference.  I also tried deleting a recent Microsoft update (KB3054976), but this did not help, either. This is a complete disaster for me, as I can't even send e-mail now, except through the server.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I figured this out.  When I reconfigured my e-mail account in Outlook, I used IMAP settings instead of POP3.  This was not how I did it before.  IMAP works great if one wants to keep all e-mail out on the server and access it from various devices.  That isn't what I do.  I changed the profile to POP3 and the poblem was solved.  Still don't know why it initially failed two nights ago, though.

Recently a customer of the company I work for did some upgrade to their system (not exactly sure what). The result is that when they send a mail containing a hyperlink to file on their website, the link doesn't work.
When you hover over the link you should get something like 'https//thiscompany.com/page.do?DOCID=123456'.
However, what we actually get on Outlook 2003 is 'outbind://39-00000000C176F3FF67E6754394476777057BDCA60700071475F5FEB9AC4FABB3D7C8EE9381620000007059
EB000088DD1DB25534C84FACDD47289A5756BB000000B81C170000/thiscompany.com/page.do?DOCID=123456'.
On mac mail it looks like this 'x-msg://24/thiscompany.com/page.do?DOCID=123456'.

The links work fine on Outlook 2010. Any idea what's happening here?

I recently purchased a new computer that has Office 2010 installed. I would like to move the contents of my .pts file from my old computer which has Outlook 2007 to my new computer which has Outlook 2010. Before, when I wanted to transfer my .pts file from one computer to another I would just copy the file to a portable hard drive and then transfer the file to the other computer. However, Outlook 2010 is completely different animal. When I go to C:, Users, App Data, etc., new computer, it is completely different from my other computer that had Vista. My question is, how can I transfer my .pts file and/or my address book, calendar, contacts, etc. for my older Windows Vista computer that had Outlook 2007, to my new computer that has Windows 7 and Outlook 2010 installed? Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Hello referee07;

Copy your .pst file from your old computer to the new one or your portable hard drive.

To launch the Outlook 2010 Export/Import wizard, first go to File menu, navigate to Open, and click Import.

In the Import And Export wizard, select Import from another program or file option and hit Next

Under File Type, select Outlook Data File(.pst) and hit Next

Now choose the file to import, select the options, and hit Next

Once done, finally select the folder to import from(if you want to import complete data don’t change any settings) and make sure Include subfolders is checked. You can either import the file to the current folder or choose the folder.

I have been looking everywhere and can't find a way to setup Outlook 2010 to only send emails and not receive any. I have a cloud RDS server and I'm running a program that uses Outlook to send emails, but the problem is that i don't have a lot of space on the server so I would like to stop outlook from receiving any emails from the IMAP accounts in order to save space. the users have outlook on there personal desktops and they receive emails there so no need to put it on the server.

Hi, I am wondering if anyone can help me please. I have just brought a new dell laptop, and office professional. I have tried to set up a pop email in outlook 2010, but I did it wrong, so I deleted it and started again, but instead of creating a new one it called it (2) not just the normal name. I have gone through the process and it says it works, but theres nothing coming into my inbox, and what I think is happening is that its going to the original inbox of the one that I named wrongly! Is there a setting for when I forward e-mail, the "from:".."sent:", etc. at the top are deleted so that the person receiving the forwarding will not see where it came from before me?

I have just spent a couple of hours trying to fathom the totally impenetrable instructions from Microsoft on how to do something that is so simple on Lotus Organiser, print a set of mail labels. Not only are the toolbar instructions given different names to the ones actually on the tool bar, but the buttons are not named exactly the same either. Are they all mad or on something at MS?

When you try to follow them all sorts of extra dialog boxes pop up and it suddenly starts to print something, when I never went near an instruction to print.

I have created my address list and allocated a category to the group I want to print labels for of a basic L7163 Avery label

All I want to do is select that list and put the names and addresses onto a label - not too much to ask for such a supposedly sophisticated piece of software, or is it? The stuff on their website is so suitable opaque as to be useless!

Can anybody out there tell me where I can go to find some simple intelligible instructions on how to do this, or am I best keeping my old copy of Organiser up to date?

Hello all, nice forum.

I hope i have not duplicated this thread.

I have office 2010 installed on my daughters christmas prezzie laptop (Toshiba with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit) but i am struggling downloading mail to the outlook inbox, or anywhere else for that matter.

Her original mailbox is on the family desktop in outlook express which works fine & as far as i can see i have mirrored the setting. I have also enabled leave a copy on the server on both machines.
Test account settings tells me test email sent & congratulations, but no visible mail, only on the desktop.


Any help would be greatly appreciated & i thank you in advance.

I cannot get the new mail notification to work with Outlook 2010(Win7 x64); it plays when I test it, but that is it. Startup/shutdown sounds play ok. Come to think of it, not sure if the icon changes in the taskbar - need to watch for that. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hello, I just set up Microsoft 2010 this week and was configuring Outlook 2010. After everything was done, I found that every time I send an email, a copy of it is automatically sent to my inbox. This would normally be fixable by applying a rule (every email I send to my own account be automatically deleted or something to that extent), but this email account is for the entire company, and they are still being forwarded the copies that I send.

Would this issue have anything to do with me using 2010 and my co-workers using 2007? Or maybe because we're using gmail, which hasn't been confirmed to work with Outlook 2010?

Please help.

Hi All,

i encounter a problem when i was opening my outlook 2010. i got this error message.
There is no email program associated to perform the request action. please install an email program or, if one is already installed, created an association in the default programs control panel.

i try to set outlook to default programs but it still doesn't seems to work. previously i have both 2007 & 2010 office install. i already uninstall 2007 and did a repair on 2010 but still no outcome. so i uninstall both office and install 2010 and now i only have 2010 on my windows 7. Thus, i still getting the same issue. anyone can assist me on this? i have attached the error message in this thread.

I have a very big problem, with Microsoft Outlook 2010, and the junk e-mail settings.
When users are sending mails within our own domain, Outlook some times categorizes our own domain e-mails as junk and automatically moves them to the Junk Mail folder.

When is just add our domain as trusted senders in the junk mail settings none of our domain e-mails is moved to the Junk Mail folder.
I have about 1000 computers running with Outlook 2010, and i want an automatically deploy of our domain as an trusted sender.
I've found this website http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179183.aspx where Microsoft describes how to setup trusted senders through the OCT tool.
But the problem is when I follow the guide and saves the MSP file, and afterwards executes the file on an other computer, our own domain isn't created as a safe sender.
In the OCT tool i have specifed a network path to the TXT fie, where my domain is written in. I've now tried to run the MSP file on 5 different computers, but none of them imports the trusted senders file from the network. All the computers are connected to the same network.

Can anybody help me?

I need a good email program as I am tired of logging on just to check if there are new emails. I know that Outlook is considered the numero uno program for managing emails, but I've also heard of Windows Live Mail, that it is the reincarnation of Outlook Express which personally I've never liked and never used, is considered quite capable of getting the job done, and it is also free, unlike the quite expensive Outlook 2010 (as a part of the whole Office 2010 pack).

So, why do I need a costly program for handling emails if I can get one for free? Why do people praise Outlook so much when they have a free alternative?

Any help will be appreciated.

I have been using an email cliient since windows 98 and it has always been the client that came with the OS; Outlook Express, Windows Mail and now Windows Live Mail and never a problem. Lets think about this, its used to check mail, if it does that its good enough. People that say too slow, mail missing, does not work is just in peoples minds; it works fine. In answer to your question, I would suggest that you use any of these fine clients; bottom line they are all the same

Install YPOPs! and make sure it is running.
Select Tools | Account Settings... from the menu in Outlook.
Go to the E-mail tab.
Click New....
Make sure Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP is selected.
Click Next >.
Type your name (what you want to appear in the From: line of messages you send) under Your Name:.
Enter your full Yahoo! Mail address (e.g. "[email protected]") under E-mail Address:.
Make sure Manually configure server settings or additional server types is checked.
Click Next >.
Make sure Internet E-mail is selected.
Click Next >.
Make sure POP3 is selected under Account Type:.
Type "127.0.0.1" under both Incoming mail server: and Outgoing mail server (SMTP):.
Type your Yahoo! ID under User Name:.The Yahoo! ID is also the first part of your Yahoo! Mail address, i.e. everything before "@yahoo.com". If your Yahoo! Mail address is "[email protected]", the ID is "example".

Enter your Yahoo! Mail password under Password:.
Click More Settings ....
Go to the Outgoing Server tab.
Make sure My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is checked.Leave Use same settings as my incoming mail server selected.

I have an Annoying Thing (password request) which pops up when I am using Outlook 2010 to connect to my internet mail server btinternet.

I had this problem in November. I changed all sorts of things, re-entered all the info in the email account settings etc etc but nothing seemed to work. Then it went away of its own accord. It never appeared from 26-Nov until two days ago when up it came again, time after time. I have again reconfirmed all the info in email account settings but it won’t go away. It doesn’t appear when I am using Internet Explorer, it is an email issue.

I am not aware that anything changed on 26-November nor two days ago. It doesn’t come up every time Outlook connects, just every so often.

Any ideas for getting rid of it permanently?

Randomly we have issues at work were mail messages will get cut off mid sentence and the remaining part of the message will not be displayed. If we go to the Webmail interface for the mail account the whole message will be displayed there. So somewhere while it is being pulled down the whole message is not getting to Outlook. This problem will happen maybe once a week or once a month which makes it hard to track down.

We recently upgraded to Bit-Defender but we did not see the problem until about 2 weeks after installing the software. Looking for ideas on where to track this one down.

The two things that come to me are to do a Repair of Outlook at Control Panel / Programs, and to do a clean reinstall of BD or turn off its email protection to see if there's a difference. But if this is happening to multiple units I would contact BD.

Outlook has stopped sending or receiving mail. The account buttons do nothing when I try to amend or add an account. Mail to be sent goes into the outbox and stays there. Nothing comes in. Old mail is still accessible. (Or was).
The calandar now tells me that it can't save. But that may be because of the other stuff I've done to try to solve the mail problem ( as I got more and more desperate). Or it may already having been in that state. I hadn't checked it.

Steps so far.
Repair of .pst files. It said it had repaired problems. but it still didn't work.
Copied .pst files from backup - no different.
Uninstalled and reinstalled - no different when I reinstall. In fact the account folder trees and stored messages are exactly the same; even the ones in the outbox.
Revo-uninstalled then reinstalled - as above. The reinstalls actually look the same as the uninstalls
Deleted appdata Outlook folders then uninstalled and reinstalled.
Deleted .pst files and reinstalled - got messages asking for them.

The "File" menu looks very strange- see below The add account and account settings buttons don't respond. I don't use Hotmail so don't see what the Upgrade connector is about. And anyway it's been like that for days. (I did even try a manual download and install.

I receive a number of e-mails in Outlook 2010 in which the hyperlink to a Web site does not work. The link shows correctly, and when I mouse over it it shows the URL. However, when I click on the link nothing happens. Other e-mails I get seem to work fine. Any ideas on why some links don't work?

I am trying to migrate all my settings and emails (Outlook 2010)from One computer to another but I am having difficulty accomplishing my task

One PC is running Windows XP 32 bit and I am trying to migrate my settings to the new one running Windows 7 64 bit, which should not be a problem, right? I would not ask for help if it was only 1 email account but I am running 3 email account from Outlook and I can't remember the settings of 2 of them as it is... it has been a while

Office 2010 backup method suck from here to the Moon since you may be able to export your Data but NOT the settings.

1st thing I tried was Backrex Demo, it did its job on the XP side of things but on the Win 7 side it tells me that it does not find my outlook even though it is installed. Heck, I even installed the one I do remember but to no avail... Backrex told there was no Outlook installed.

Granted, it was only a Demo and I sure the heck don't want to spend money for the Paid version if it will not do what its supposed to.

So, any FREE third party Apps I can run or heck, I would be glad if Microsoft can throw us a bone and give us something to work with.

i just found another problem in outlook 2010...my OUTBOX doesn't work.

no matter what e-mail account I attempt to send from...& even tho the accounts are set up correctly...the outgoing message goes to my outbox & just stays there.

very unhappy w/ outlook 2010...especially in light of my former (& still existing) problems (Click-2-Run doesn't work...MS Single Image pops up at least 900 times) & now this...???...the way i'm seein' in...windows live mail smokes it big time

I can manually "export" my Outlook 2010 mail to a specific destination using Outlook's features.
But I want to schedule an "automatic" backup instead, weekly or monthly, etc.
My OS is Windows 10.
I tried Windows 10 Task Scheduler but cannot seem to have this do it for me.

Anyone know how to backup Outlook 2010 mail on a regular automatic basis?
Anyway to do this within Windows 10 or must one buy a software program too do this?

First, I tried to get Outlook 2010 to see my .dbx folders from Outlook Express, it wouldn't.

I then migrated my OE mail to WLM. I then tried to both export my mail to Outlook 2010 and Import from Outlook 2010. When importing, Outlook only saw the welcome mail message but didnt see anything else.

I should add that I copied my old (2007 Outlook.pst) file into Outlook 2010's store directory. I am not sure if this is why I am unable to import my mail.

Any ideas?

I just got done getting my e-mail from WLM to Outlook 2010.

There are a couple of tricks:You need to have Outlook set as your default mail client
Outlook needs to be the 32-bit version. The 64-bit version will not work
Make sure Outlook is not running
Open WLM. Menu item: File -> Export Messages
Select output to Exchange format. This will generate the PST file and follow the directions as they are presented
Close WLM
Open Outlook. Your entire email account will appear as a folder under your default account in Outlook. Time to move things around.

This is the exact same issue as reported in a closed thread in this forum that is occurring for me. In a nutshell:

I use a Yahoo Canada (.ca) account in Outlook 2010 as my primary email account. Recently, I started getting the same authentication errors for RECEIVING email (sending works fine). So I used Yahoo's online chat help system. We went over so many different configurations for settings in Outlook (seemed like they were grasping at straws), and what happens is that the settings work for about 30 minutes, I can send/receive with no problem but all of a sudden I start getting the endless prompts for password authentication and then the error that my login/password could not be authenticated (plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com). Interestingly enough, I can receive on my cell phone(s) with no problem, and haven't changed any settings, this includes on several BlackBerrys, a Palm Pre, an Android and an iPhone (I know, I'm a cell phone junkie LOL). But it also does not work in Windows Mail (Vista) or Mac Mail (Mac OSX).

My ISP (Rogers) blames Yahoo and Yahoo blames Rogers.

In the meantime, I notice that when I get the authentication error mentioned in the link above, if I go to a browser and log in to my account, then go back to Outlook, receiving works fine again...for a short while.

So it seems like something is dropping my authentication to the Yahoo POP server after a few minutes, no matter which 3rd party email client I use, EXCEPT on cell phones!

I have seen this same problem where the users inadvertantly moved the folder underneath another folder. I would check your folders with the + symbol and
see if it is now under another folder.

Otherwise you might want to check your deleted messages folder to see if it is there.

Exchange 2010

Client with the issue is running Outlook 2010 on Windows 7 Enterprise x64 (90% of users on this same OS). Desktop, hard wired on a steady internet connection.

With this user, some (not all) emails that are sent via a distribution group are delayed 5-20 minutes. For example, last week an email was sent out to all employees of our office at 4:50pm. This user got the email at 5:06pm. Looking at the header of the message, it does in fact show a time of 4:50. His send/receive settings match up with mine completely.

Anyone have any suggestions as of what to try next?

I purchased a brand new computer with Windows 8 and Office 2010. Everything set up in a cinch and has been working like a charm... that is, until two days ago. When I launched Outlook, it seemed to take all day to receive my mail messages. Sending mail works fine, but the program never seems to receive my mail. Wednesday there were 11 messages for a total of 1.21 MB that never completed the receiving process. So I went to my webmail server and logged in - all 11 messages were there, and I could open, reply, forward, etc. just fine. I didn't change anything on my computer, I didn't have any technical issues prior to this problem. It's like it just woke up Wednesday morning and decided not to receive any mail.

On top of that, when I close Outlook a window pops up that says "Microsoft Outlook has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem", and it shows a green bar that moves from left to right but just hangs out there all day. As I type this, it has been searching for a solution for over an hour.

The email account is a POP3 account.

Anybody got an idea what's happening here? I've searched the internet and Microsoft's website for a solution, but nothing works.

I have 2 64 bit machines
On my XP machine im trying to export WLM then importing to Outlook 2010 on my windows 7 machine

First off when exporting on XP machine:
Open Windows Live Mail.
In the Windows Live Mail window, click the File button and select ?Export? and then select ?Email messages?.
Select ?Microsoft Exchange? as the format and then click Next.
You will see a message that all email will be exported to Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Exchange, click Ok to continue.
You can export all email folders or select the appropriate folders that you want to export by using the ?Select folders? option.
After you select the appropriate option, click OK and wait for the export process to be completed.
When the ?Export Complete? dialog box appears, click ?Finish?.
Now..... Where does it export these too??? I cant find it anywhere...and it doesnt give me an option to choose...

Hi all
While there are other methods of "Backing up " Email folders etc this method is EASY.

1) DOWNLOAD PFBACKUP.EXE from the Microsoft site Download details: Outlook 2007/2003/2002 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup

IT DOES work for outlook 2010 but you have to find it in the ADD INS on the menu - image shown.

This IMO is the EASIEST method of saving mail folders - very useful and quick when messing around with office versions on different computers too.

I just bought a new laptop because my old one was fried.

So I am using Windows 7 and bought Outlook 2010 to use for emails. Anyone know how I can import all of my old emails saved, account settings, etc, from Windows Mail on Vista? I have it all stored on an external harddrive. Tried to follow the steps that Outlook 2010 provides and it doesn't work.

Anyone have an idea?

This setup is needed for a business.

I have a GODADDY account using the email server at secureserver.net.

I am using Outlook 2010 (not hosted exchange/exchange 2010/whatever) - just a standard IMAP/POP3 connection with several email accounts (I don't need the Exchange features at the moment, but perhaps I would need to to acheive this?)

I am connected with a modem HOTBOX- configured as a modem/router.

My ISP domain shows up on all the outgoing mail I sent (not the internal IP, the PUBLIC one!!!)

Using Outlook is a must for our company, but I could not find any configuration to set privacy of the IP I'm sending from.

I've tried using a standalone proxy/VPN software called proXPN - which works fine for browsing but it blocks ALL my in/out mail - won't receive or send using Outlook. Outlook itself doesn't have any kind of proxy settings.

In GMAIL it's so easy to see the headers (original message) - and this exposes me completely.

I need a PRIVATE IP (or an IP from another country) if for all ports including browsing/mail - then it should be STATIC and a FIXED IP.

But most importantly, I can leave my ISP IP as it is , but I NEED THE SMTP to hide my IP, send through a proxy, or my website domain, or even just show GODADDY's secureserver.net only without showing my real IP.

I've searched google, but found no simple way of doing this, and I'm posting this to get a more specific answer.

I am trying to help a friend and have run out of ideas.
She has Outlook 2010 running on Win 7
She also has a iPhone 3G
(I debated if this post belonged in this part of the forum or under phones. I think the problem is Outlook so hope I am right)
Her email is POP3 with Homecall.co.uk

The Problem. Messages downloaded to Outlook still come through to the iPhone.

Solution Tried. Outlook set to NOT keep messages on the server once downloaded and iPhone set to only download messages manually when they are requested.

So as I understand it messages should in theory go to Outlook, be deleted from the server and then if she is away from home and tells her iPhone to check mail she should only get new messages. But she gets everything.

Any suggestions?

UPDATE. I think i have found the problem. The Outlook setting to leave messages on the server has indeed been un ticked. BUT it seems to re- tick itself and when it does naturally the problem starts again.

I am running Outlook 2010, Windows 7 & continue to have a problem with new mail alerts & icon in the systray. I have everything marked for sound & desktop alert yet sometimes it works & other times it doesn't. I run Outlook 2010 @ work with XP & it functions properly all the time. Don't want to switch to Live mail, but at least I get the alerts of new mail

Hello. I have a question regarding Microsoft Office 2010's Outlook program. I have been using Office 2007 for the past few years and now I have Office 2010. Both my Office 2007 and 2010 versions have Outlook 2007 and 2010 respectfully. I just installed Office 2010 and setup my e-mail accounts in Outlook 2010. While setting up e-mail accounts, I used the same process as I did when I setup e-mail accounts in Outlook 2007 -- they are essentially the same manner and method to setup in both Outlook versions -- nothing different. Now, after I setup my Outlook 2010 and downloaded my e-mails into Outlook 2010 from my e-mail server , I rechecked my webmail account online. I was surprised to find that the same e-mail messages were STILL ON my e-mail server AFTER I downloaded them to Outlook 2010. I then uninstalled my Office 2010 and consequently Outlook 2010 and reinstalled Office 2007 with Outlook 2007. After I setup my Outlook 2007's e-mail accounts, I downloaded the e-mails from my e-mail server as well AS I KNEW they were STILL ON their e-mail server. I went back into my online webmail account, and this time, there were NO messages left on it. I have known this to be the case with Outlook 2007 from the past.

My preference or desire? To leave NO messages on my e-mail server when they are downloaded to Outlook 2007 AND Outlook 2010. ...but I did NOT do ANYTHING DIFFERENT between Outlook 2007 and 2010?!?!? So what is going on???????

There is a setting in Outlook 2010 to keep your mail on the server even after downloading it to a POP3 account - all you need to do is turn it off.

Unfortunately, Im on a different PC today, so if you can wait till I get home in about 4/5 hours I'll find that setting in my Outlook 2010 and post it here for you.

I have two email accounts that I want to be able to switch between using outlook so that I can use one for general use and another for a mail merge.

When I run the mail merge, microsoft word 2010 looks like it performs the merge correctly, however no emails are sent to outlook.

I am using Word 2010, Outlook 2010, and Windows 7. The email accounts are gmail accounts (POP3).
I was able to mail merge before I set up multiple accounts, and I have been able to get multiple accounts to work on separate computers (not with the same email address's though).
Unlike other people's problems sending emails through mail merge, I am not able to send any emails out - not plain text nor HTML.
I have looked online and found a suggestion to run SCANPST.EXE, and it did not fix my problem. I have also read online that this maybe an unknow bug or issue.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Maybe there is something with office 2007 that my give clues to what may be wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have 3 computers setup to send and receive IMAP/SMTP mail from my domain server using Outlook 2010, 2 with Win 7 and one with XP.
Everything was working up to 10 days ago, 19th Jan was the last email I received normally. Since then I cannot get the 2 Win 7 machines to receive my mail. The XP machine still works fine. The emails are on the server obviously or XP would not fetch them and I can see them in the web mail client. Sending test emails from the Win 7 machines is not a problem.
I have checked the account settings between XP and Win 7 and as expected they are identical. Last Windows Updates were installed on 13/Jan/2012 and the Win 7 machines were working after then.
Appears something else in Win 7 is at fault.

Solve the problem-

i found out out i was running 32 Bit Microsoft Office. I have a 64 Bit System. Removed, then reisntalled the 64 Bit version.
I then updated to make sure i have Office 2010 Service Pack 2 isntalled.

Not sure if this was the root of the problem. but my Outlook 2010 is now working again. I really dont use the Windows Mail App, so i dont know if that was fixed or not.

I keep contact details in my Microsoft account (at Sign in to your Microsoft account). I've been using Outlook 2010 with the Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector and this used to synchronise my contacts fine.

However, for a while now, I've noticed mail synchronisation errors and I've had to configure my Microsoft mail account to use the standard IMAP settings (not via the Hotmail connector).

However, this method no longer synchronises my contacts. How do you configure the mail and contact settings in Outlook 2010 to synchronise both mail and contacts in Outlook 2010 with my Microsoft account?

I am totally not sure whether I am posting under the right category or not. I just need a solution to transfer emails from my previous windows laptop to the new mac that I have bought a couple of days ago. I need to transfer email data and folders from outlook 2010 to apple mail in mac. I have transferred almost all the data that I need to mac but the mail migration is the problem that I am stuck into.

I currently use Windows Live Mail.
I was looking at "Office Home and Student 2010" and "Office Home and Business 2010" (1 user license).
Business has Outlook, where as Student doesn't.
Is Outlook "better" in any way than WLM?

I have recently upgraded to Office 2010 (from 07) and I perform a lot a mail merges. I have come across a few issues with this feature within 2010 and wondered if anyone has a solution. I am obviously running Windows 7.

Issue 1 - When performing the mail merge to emails (HTML), Word 2010 doesn't seem to recognise my IMAP email account, which is set as default in Outlook 10 it uses one of my other pop email accounts.
Is there any way to set my IMAP account as the default for mail merging?

Issue 2 - Once I have completed the email merge I then need to create them as a PDF, which in 2007 worked fine but the Acrobat addin in Word 10 doesn't do anything. (I do have Acrobat 8 prof installed as well) I have done a little research and can see that this is a problem but I need a solution to fix.
Otherwise I'll be reduced to uninstalling and re-install 2007!

Anyone with solutions please let me know.

Hello,

Here's the background info:

We're on Exchange and we use the Lync tool. The user in question had her domain changed. I made the change in Lync as the change was already made in outlook. She then could not book online meetings and would get an error saying the user names in outlook and Lync were not the same even though they were.

To fix this, I deleted her profile and started outlook again. After her profile was downloaded from the exchange server, many of her new email she was receiving would appear with her name as the sender in her inbox. This is happening with most of her mail but not all.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

This problem just started happening to me this afternoon.

Normally, when I open an e-mail that has a URL in it, Outlook displays that URL to me as a hyperlink. However, now they are just displaying as text, and to use them, I have to copy and paste into browser.

This is not an issue with hyperlinks not functioning properly. No error messages, nothing. The URLs simply aren't hyperlinks.
To be clear, the e-mails in question definitely have URLs that Outlook on another computer (at home) is still indeed displaying as hyperlinks....same e-mail....hyperlinks at home, but no longer here on my work computer.

I have not tried it yet on a different work computer (next step), but I did try it with a different 'profile' in Outlook, and got the same behavior (or lack of behavior).
It's not happening to all e-mails in all e-mail accounts. I have a bunch of e-mail accounts that I access through Outlook, and this problem is only happening to certain ones.

Example: I have at least 3 e-mail accounts on a single domain. This problem is happening to the e-mails in the inbox (and/or any other folder within that account) of two of these accounts, but not the other one.

For some reason, I was going through and turning off all kinds of autocorrect stuff (cause I hate that stuff), and didn't realize that this particular setting governed how e-mail gets displayed.

I thought since it was in the section called 'Editor Options' within the section called 'Compose messages', it was only relevant to what happens while composing new e-mails.

At any rate, I got it taken care of. :-)

Hey all,

I have this very weird issue on several machines using Outlook 2007/2010 + Exchange 2003. When in Windows Explorer I right-click a file (say, an xlsx file), choose Send To > Mail Recipient and, in the new email window, click the To button, the contact list opens but freezes for anywhere from several seconds to up to a minute. My machine is quite fast, thus the wait is fairly short, but on slower machines (E5400 + 4GB RAM) the wait can reach a minute in length. Sadly, the issue is quite frequent and I am able to reproduce it quite easily.

Hello here's my situation..... I'm changing my email client from windows live mail 2012 to outlook 2010. I have several distribution lists in my contacts folder. How do i export those lists to outlook 2010? I noticed in outlook 2010 that there is an option when sending an attachment you can click outlook item then browse to contacts and then select the list - this option is not available in windows live mail .......any help would be greatly apprecitated thx

I must open Outlook 2010 before emails created with the right click menu from an Explorer window are sent.

This was not a problem with Outlook Express. I have changed internet providers to Verizon FiOS from Time Warner Cable.

I have "Send immediately when connected" checked (and I'm always connected),

I've sent the test emails through Account settings (no problems),

I tried setting the log on information in advanced settings (instead of using same info as incoming settings),

as well as turning off the "scan outgoing mails" with ESET.
I noticed "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication " is checked. If I uncheck this, the receive works but the send fails.

I tried Google and the forum search, but I can't find an answer.

I don't know what else to do. Thanks.

Thanks in advance for your help! Previously, when I clicked on a "mailto" link in my web-based Gmail (mail.google.com), the new email composition box would pop up in MS Outlook 2010. That is my preference.

However, I downloaded the Opera browser today and I undated Chrome to Version 51.0.2704.106 m, and somewhere along the line, doing these updates changed some of my defaults. I have used Control Panel to change my defaults back to MS Outlook, but it didn't work. When I click on a "mailto" link in Chrome Gmail, a mail.google.com composition box pops up instead of MS Outlook.

When I go to chrome://settings/handlers, I see "Active protocol handlers," "mailto," "(none)." My only two choices are "(none)" and "mail.google.com."

Any help appreciated to restore MS Outlook as my "mailto" default. Thanks again.

Hi,

First i like to said that i've made a search on the forum and didn't find the answer to my question.

My problem is that i received some email in html format, with a mailto hyperlink formated something similar like that <a href="blocked::mailto:[email protected]">. The problem is that, when i click on the link, Outlook pop up internet explorer with [ blocked::mailto:[email protected] ] (without the []) in the URL address bar, and doesn't know how to handle it.

The action wished is that outlook open up a new mail window with [email protected] in the from form.

Did i made myself clear ? Does anyone have the same problem ?

No problem of course with correct (i mean without the blocked:: stuff) mailto href.

Two days ago the mailto weblinks on ordinary webpages no longer open in Outlook. I get a small pop-up that says, "The operation failed". Previously those links opened from all the browsers. I haven't made any changes to Outlook either, and otherwise, it's working just fine. After an extensive web search I followed the recommended fixes but they didn't work either:
*uninstall outlook connector
*uninstall adobe reader
*run outlook detect & repair
*run scanpst
*created a new profile
*reinstalled outlook

This is the main computer for a small business and it's the only one having this problem, and it is using Win-7 pro and Outlook 2003. I know it's an old program, but it was working fine until a couple of days ago. I tried system restore, but those restore points only went back a few days and none of them fixed the problem. I do have a disk image from June that might pull from, but I'm not sure what part of it I would need to restore. Since this is a small business with 9 workers our resources are not able to start replacing full computer systems.

I've seen this problem mentioned several times in other forums but no one seems to either understand the problem or they don't know what to do.

Any help is sincerely appreciated.

When I click on a "mailto:"; link, the default mail client opened together with an extra browser window. The browser address bar contains mailto:<email address> . so, I end up with 3 windows (mail client, new window with mailto in address bar and the main window where I clicked the mailto link).

I'm a web developer and use mailto links in my applications. What can I do to fix the issue mentioned above?

Yes, I just recently installed Microsoft Office 2010 Pro onto my computer. I have run into a bit of a problem. I wanna make Microsoft Outlook 2010 the default email client for my user side and I wanna leave Outlook Express as default for another user on my computer. I cannot seem to figure out how to do this because once you pick a default email program on one user desktop it also makes it the default for other users on the computer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

We are running Exchange 2003 SP2 and our clients have Office 2010. Our Outlook profiles are created automatically by using Group Policy to set a registry key which points to a PRF file with all the Outlook settings. Lately, many of our users are reporting that their emails are getting stuck in the Outbox. If you look at their Outlook profile, they have two Exchange accounts listed. You cannot delete either of them; it gives a message that this is the default email account.
 
The immediate solution is to recreate the user's Outlook profile. This allows the stuck email to send. The real issue is that this keeps occurring. Recreating the Outlook profile sometimes fixes the problem for a long time, months maybe. But other times the problem occurs the next day. This is happening with users who have established Outlook profiles as well as new users logging into their PCs for the first time. I've attached the code from our PRF. Any help is appreciated, as we have around 400 active users and we're constantly chasing after this issue.

Couple steps you may apply...
 
1. Repair the offline file with a Microsoft utility called SCANOST.exe. I’ve seen this file reside in a number of different locations, mainly within Program Files. It might be best to search for it with Windows or Google Desktop. SCANPST.exe will also work, though you’ll have to go digging for your outlook.ost, which should be near c:\Documents and Settings\ %profile%\ Local Settings\ Application Data\ Microsoft\ Outlook\ outlook.ost. If your file is significant in size, you’ll save a lot of time with the repair operation by not creating a backup. Because if the repair finishes successfully and Outlook still bombs, you’ll need to.
2. Shutdown Outlook completely, including any runaway outlook.exe processes in the task manager. Open Mail in the Control Panel and before you delete your profile completely, write down the server settings! There’s no need to worry about backing up your mail as it’s stored on the Exchange server. (Essentially, you’re deleting that outlook.ost when you drop your mail profile.) Now, start Outlook and it will create a new profile, where you’ll configure the server with the information you wrote down previously.

hi guys,

I have import/copy all mail & account setting from OE to outlook 2010 in the same computer. I have many folder in sent items folder, the problem is got an empty folder in sent items folder, which means all the email is not copy/import to from sent items in OE to outlook 2010. how can i get my mail back ? it is possible to import for the second time ? I have the outlook Hotmail connector installed on my work machine (On outlook 2010), and I also have outlook 2016 (which connects to outlook.com natively) on my home machine.

Both have stopped playing nice with outlook.com in different ways::

outlook 2010 simply wont connect with outlook.com at all -
Outlook 2016 shows my email and calendar from outlook.com but will no longer show my wife's shared calendar.

Both of these installations were working perfectly with no issues prior to the recent outlook.com upgrade.
Has anyone else experiences issues like this?

I have a new Dell Inspiron 14Z running windows 7 pro 64bit and i'm using Microsoft office 2010.
I'm trying to retrieve archived emails that i backed up on an external hard drive from a previous computer, the files are .pst which is an outlook format but i keep on getting an error message saying the file is not an Outlook data file (.pst).
i dont have any other way to retrieve these emails since they were deleted from the server and its about 1.5 years of work emails. Not sure what to do? should i move the files from the external driver to a different location on the computer and open them, or are they corrupted and need to be fixed?

I have WinXP Prof., and Outlook 2002. IE 6 if that matters.

My outlook works fine under normal situations but when I clink on any kind of mailto link in excel, word, or on a web page outlook opens and keeps opening. After 30 seconds I might have 100 instances of it open and it's not stopping. I have to hit CTRL ALT DEL to stop it and reboot. I have never seen this before. Any ideas? I'm wondering if it's a registry problem or some screw up in an .ini file or whatever. I'm not sure where to look or what to look for. I tried reinstalling everything. Repairing too.

When I click a mailto link, instead of Outlook 2003 opening up an email w/the address already on it I get a 2nd instance of outlook and I'm the default mail client is not installed properly then IE 11 opens up new windows until I manage to shut them down.

Default mail program is Outlook 2003 in control panel?

I use Chrome for my browser. If I click on a mailto: link on a page, this calls Outlook. Now, I have Outlook as part of Office 2010, but I don't want to use it. Can I change this behavior so that a mailto: link will call Gmail?

I send invites to lots of all day events from my Outlook 2003 to users who have Outlook 2010. When I send these through I set them to not have reminders set. However, when they get accepted to Outlook 2010, it sets a reminder which means they are being woken up at 11.45pm by reminders for these events. I assume this is a compatibility thing between the two versions? Does anyone have any ideas on this?

This is becoming a real pain for our managers so any assistance that anyone can offer would be appreciated.

Hi,

I've just started using Outlook 2010 instead of WLM 2010, because it is getting too slow and really bugging me.

I'm able to send/receive mail from a web account (from a website I administrate), my Gmail and ONE windows live account, but my main email (the second windows live account) just wont process.

Attached a screenshot of what happens.

Like I said, it's weird this is happening to just one of my Hotmail accounts, but it's so annoying to have to use two email clients, or one client and one browser.

This seems to be a very unreliable thing Outlook Connector does, but is there any way to fix it? I've tried repairing/re-installing Connector, repaired Office, re-added the account, and deleting the OST files. still no luck.

I'm on Win 7 Home Premium SP1 Running Office 2010 Pro.

Are you using the 32-bit version of of Office or the 64-bit version?

Assuming you are using the 32-bit version of Office you also need to use the 32-bit version of Outlook Connector and vice versa.

Hi I am trying to move one pst file from one laptop which has Outlook 2010 32 bit to another laptop which has Outlook 2010 64 bit installed,
steps taken
1) Copied the pst file from the User/AppData/Microsoft/Outlook folder to usb.
2) Pasted the file from usb into User/Documents folder.
3) Tried to open the file in Outlook and I get the error that Outlook encountered errors while opening the file.
Now how is that possible when the file is working perfectly in one laptop but when I copy and paste it into another it gets corrupted? Is it due to 32 bit to 64 bit outlook? I tried to repair it using scanpst and it brought back few mails, so what else can I do? Am I doing something wrong in moving the file.

This is my first post on the Windows 7 Forums I hope General Discussions is the correct place for my post.

I will shortly be getting a new desktop pc with windows 7 home premium 64 bit. It will have Microsoft office Outlook 2010 on it.
This will replace my current computer which has Outlook 2003.

Is there a way of transferring my saved emails from Outlook 2003 on my old pc to outlook 2010 on my new pc?

Also I currently have 3 email accounts. Is it possible to configure Outlook 2010 to be able to view emails from 3 different email accounts?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

I'm not a fan of Outlook so I don't have a lot of experience with it. Having said that, I remembered an old Microsoft Answers forum thread about moving 2003 .pst files over to 2010. The first answer by Russ Valentine should still be valid. One suggestion if I may. Before attempting to move any emails I think it would be helpful to back them up, make a system image, do something to protect them should the unthinkable happen.

Just going through the frustrating task of switching to new Win7 machines from old XP machines.
 
I have several thousand important (business) e-mails on my old XP machine under Outlook Express 6.  Six different accounts, each with their own inbox.  Four are POP3, 2 are IMAP.  The new machine has Office 2010 with Outlook, and I have set up all 6 accounts and they are sending and receiving fine.
 
I have read several articles on how to move (or export/import) all my old e-mails into Outlook, but they all seem to be written as if I have both Outlook Express and Outlook on both machines - not the case.  Some say to install Outlook temporarily on the old machine and make the conversion there - is this really necessary?  Where would I get just Outlook 2010?  Download a trial version?
 
The articles all seem to make reference to a PST file.  I have located the store files on the Outlook Express (old) machine, and they are all in a .dbx format.  Additionally, there are literally dozens of these dbx files, many for old folders that I no longer have on the old machine, even some old e-mail accounts that have been closed for years..

Recently my Firefox (3/6/13) mailto: links no longer open an Outlook Express Create Mail window as they used to. Instead, it simply goes to Outlook Express. From IE it correctly opens the Create Mail window but I don't want to use IE. My Firefox setting in Tools->Options->Applications under mailto is Use Outlook Express.

Any help is appreciated.

When I'm at work outlook 2010 will send e-mails without any problems.
When I go home after work and try to send an e-mail, they go straight to the outbox folder. They won't send until I'm back at work the following day. I don't understand.

Hi,

I know this topic has come up before but the thread seems to be closed and I do not see the resolution. I am trying to move my messages from Outlook Express 6 to Outlook 2010. They are on different computers. I already copied the entire OE6 directory onto the new computer and tried to use the import function in Outlook. I am getting the error "No internet accounts found to import". I do not see where to browse to the data files.

Is this the best way to maintain the integrity of the folder structure?

i would install 2010 onto PC with outlook express - you can use the trial version of outlook to do this
then import on that PC - it should pick up the internet connections

then move the PST file across to the new PC

Ok so I downgraded to office 2007 after experiencing some showstopper bugs in outlook 2010, also outlook 2007 32bit is way faster than 64bit outlook 2010 so still some work for MS to do

Now whenever I start outlook I get a message telling me that my profile was created with a newer version of outlook, I click on ok and everything works however if possible I would like to get rid of this message.

Can my profile simply be converted to outlook 2007 format, or is the only solution to make a new profile?

I had Office 2010 installed temporarily a WHILE ago. I have had 2007 installed for a while again..suddenly I started getting the error message that Outlook profile was created with a newer version of Outlook. I have tried everything to get this fixed..with no luck..

Here is what I have done:
1. Deleted mail folder. Made new mail profile in Windows and in Outlook. Didn't change anything despite losing messages. I created "new" mail profile for 2007, and it is still telling me profile was created in Newer Version
2. I totally deleted and reinstalled Office..still getting error message..

This is driving me crazy. It's not a big deal-Outlook still works. It is just bugging me..
Any assistance is appreciated. I thought I had tried everything.

You might want to go to control panel, programs and do a repair on office/outlook 2010, some of the microsoft office updates do strange things with outlook. I have had to repair my 2010 a few times.

I have 2 problems with using the Outlook version 2000 Mail Merge feature.

Problem 1:

I want to Mail Merge Outlook contacts into Mailing Labels. however, there is a field missing from the available fields after I complete the all the steps.

I tried this 2 ways:

1. All contacts in current view/All contact fields

2. All contacts in current view/Contact fields in current view--after adding the Categories field to the Current View

I also tried adding a user-defined field and then tried both choices above.

In all cases,the Categories field or user-defined field is missing from the available fields: missing from the Insert Merge Fields and missing from the Mail Merge Recipients dialog box.

Here is the sequence I use:

Open Outlook

Click on Contacts shortcut (or View/Go To/Contacts)

Tools/Mail Merge

Select All contacts in current view/All contact fields from the dialog box choices. Select Mailing Labels from the Document type drop down box.

Click OK

Click OK on the warning message: "Outlook has created a MailMerge document...."

In the Mail Merge Helper dialog box, click on Main Document/Setup

Select the label product/type from the Label Options dialog box. Click OK

Click on Data Source/Get Data/Use Address Book. Select Outlook Address Book. Note that the Categories field is not include... Read more

Folks I have read the MS tech notes on how to get Outlook 2003 [I have it via Office 2003 Professional, full install] to import from OE6. It fails under either option: import from "another program" or "Import Internet Mail....". Under the former it is pointed to the correct folder, but fails with Error: Cannot open,.. another program in use" but there's not... I tried copying the folder to a nice clean location on the C: and checked all the properties, nothing interfering, still won't open the folder.
Under the latter option it just doesn't do anything after directing it to the correct folder. Seems to accept the command, closes the window, but does not import anything. No error messages.

Umm.... do MS teams communicate with one another??

Closely related: If I could just get the FOLDERS I had setup it would be a great asset, or if i could just get the ADDRESS book it would help. Do you know how to import *.dbx folders into Outlook 2003? Or the old outlook Express address Book?

They are written in two different formats that are uncompatible. The Oulook Express has a file sytem totally unique to it.

I had the same problem about 6 weeks ago going from XP to Win7.
I had to transfer address book to notepad and put it into Outlook one at a time. The old mail sits in the old PC.
I have heard you can transfer the OE mail files over to Windows mail or gmail etc. Then transfer files from the new mail server to Outlook.
File system is changed over with the mail transfer- I haven't tried it though.

But i want it back as the 2nd pic, where i can see on a second line the subject ... I searched but could not find the option to switch it back. Does anyone know how to get it back?

We are moving from Windows XP / Office 2003 to Windows 7 / Office 2010
Huge change and of course people try everything that is possible...and impossible, things that you wouldn't of think of doiing.

But yes it seem you can actualy take files, in that case PDF files on your desktop and drag and drop them into an Outlook folder directly.

It doesn't show as an MSG file, it realy show's itself in Outlook as a PDF and you can double click it to open it.

It probably has the same system as Windows Explorer does

We have Symantec Enterprise Vault to Archive emails witch will automaticly do so after a predetermined period of time
We can archive the PDF file and it will result by creating a blank email from yourself with a PDF attached to it

So it does seem to work, i don't see any bugs or error or problem soo far.
But that is "so far"
I can't find anywhere on the internet a post or something that tells you "yes you can do that with Outlook 2010"

Anyone has an opinion on that matter understanding that everyone has differents ways of working...

Want to set some accounts to check for new mail every ten minutes, others every 30 minutes, others not at all (only manually). Can't see how to do this. Even TBird can do that. What am I missing?

It is quite easy, in fact. In Outlook you do this using so called Send / Receive Groups. A group can include just one or multiple mail accounts.

You can define Send / Receive Groups as you wish by following these simple steps:
On ribbon, select Send / Receive > Send / Receive Groups > Define Send / Receive Groups:

Click New to create a new Send / Receive Group:

Give the group a name, click OK:

Select account you want to include in this group on the left pane, select Include the selected account in this group. Do this for each account you want to add in this group, finish by clicking OK:

Set the online and offline send / receive values for each group:

Save settings by clicking Close button
That's it.

Notice that you can also send / receive each group manually:
