I have hotmail on the mail tile but I would also like to have windows live mail there too. Does anyone know how to do this ?

A:Move windows live mail to the mail tile.

Do you mean a account? I would assume that you could just add it the same way as the account, but I don't have one so do not know for sure.

I am really enjoying Windows 8 so far. It took some getting used to, and I still believe it is more ideally suited for touch-interface, but I still enjoy using it and updating my computer usage habits because of it.

That being said, I don't seem to understand the Mail app that comes on the start page. I have added my accounts, and can check them accordingly, and I really enjoy it. But when I get new mail, I get a popup in the upper-right hand corner of the screen about the new mail. My question is this:

Can I make the Mail Icon show my new mail, (in a live-tile fashion) much like when I get new messages the friends live-tile shows those messages. Is that possible? Even if it is just the title/subject, or author that would be a nice customization and benefit to me.

Thanks for reading, and sorry if this belongs in the customize section and not here.

Hi I am not sure if this belongs on this thread and I have seen possible solutions but I don't know if they are what I need for my issue.
I have a Windows 8.1 Desktop (HP) and not an upgrade from Windows 8 (I don't think so at least).
Every so often I can not open the tiles.
Instead it tries to open and maybe the top bar appears then it will return to the home page where the tiles and apps are. T
he Mail tile (Hotmail) is usually the one I open and that will either attempt to open but won't work or just not open.
I can get onto the desktop from the desktop tile and I have noticed the mail tile icon is on the task bar of the desktop. When I click on the icon it won't open.
I then try other tiles, including the live ones which are updating the news etc but they will not open. These icons also appear on the desktop tool bar.
I have only found that restarting the PC allows me to get the tiles/apps open.
Luckily each time I have restarted the tiles work as expected.

I have seen problems others have with tiles not opening and the issue seems to be something to do with going from Windows 8 to 8.1 and I bought the PC with 8.1 installed.
The issue occurred again on Sunday 9th November, the day before it was fine.
Before I tried to open the tile, there was a java update required and I ran that - not sure if thats connected to it.
With the icons appearing on the desktop although still not opening I am not sure whether the tiles are opening but not completely or it is something mor... Read more

I have upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1. After doing so and making sure my accounts are all setup, I have found that I can not get the mail tile to act "live". I have verified it is set to live by right-clicking and seeing that link state "turn live tile off". I tried doing that and then turning it back on. I have tried rebooting. But the tile just isn't live. My other live tiles (news, finance, weather, store, etc) all seem to be live. It is only mail that I am having a problem with.

Any suggestions?

A:Mail Live Tile not Working after Windows 8.1 Upgrade

OK. Not sure what is going on. My Yahoo Mail account would not allow me to set it up as get messages as they occur. I had to set it up as check every 15 minutes. My Gmail account did not have this issue. But still not getting the live tile to work. I saw 15 apps needed updating now, so did that (mail was one of them), but still no live tile working for mail.

I finally decided to install Yahoo Mail because I needed the live tile for that account. But that live tile was not working either. I had people send me emails, and nothing. They sent to Yahoo and to Hotmail. Then after about 4 hours, all of a sudden I started getting the live tiles updating. I have no idea why.

I removed Yahoo Mail, and still the live tile worked for mail. I waited until the next morning to verify it was all good and it is still working.

So marking as solved. Not sure what solved it, but there you go.

My parents bought a PC last year running W8. I set up there talktalk E mail accounts in the W8 Native E mail client from the Mail tile at the start screen without any problem. All worked fine until recently when in order to download an app they had to register an Outlook E Mail address. Not sure if they had updates applied as well but they had to start logging on to the PC at boot up every time using a password. In an effort to resolve this they restored the PC to an earlier time which has cured the logging on issue (ie no password required) but when they access the Mail tile from the start screen it is an outlook E Mail account that comes up. I have tried without success logging into this outlook account and then adding the talktalk accounts. I even tried using my own account but could not add that either.
All they want is to click the Mail tile and get there talktalk accounts to come up just as before (no outlook or hotmail or anything else). Is there a way to reset the E Mail client/tile in W8 back to what came with PC so that I could set it up just as I did when the PC was purchased. They are running W8 and do not wish to restore back to factory settings as they have a few other bits and pieces of software installed.
If they upgrade to W8.1 will they be forced into using a password to log on every time ?
Any help in restoring the E Mail back to the native W8 client would be much appreciated

Hi, I hope I am posting this in the correct part of the forum.

I'm setting up a new laptop that has windows 8.1 for a friend. During the setup we used her existing email address / password. So currently if she selects the mail tile it opens up right into her email.

However, she is very paranoid about security in general, and she doesn't like the idea if she happens to leave her laptop on laying around the house, that anyone can just come up, press the mail button and view her mail.

Is there anyway to set up the preferences, so that when you press that mail tile...a password box comes up and forces you to type in a password?

I am aware that she could use the windows keyboard button +L to lock her whole computer

A:Mail Tile ... how can I require a password

Hello Harley,

Not that I'm aware of. Access to the Mail app is protected by the user account password.

The safest thing to do is lock the computer when leaving the laptop for a bit to prevent unauthorized access.

When I go into the mail tile, it tell me to choose you email provider to add my account. Comcast is not an available option so I go to the "Other" account. When I type in my account information and press connect, it says "adding your account" but then it just sits there and acts like its searching for the account but does not do anything after that. I was wonder if this is a problem with my mail tile or doesn't Microsoft acknowledge Comcast as an email provider.

A:Mail tile - I can't add my comcast email account.

Instead of using the mail tile how about downloading and installing Windows live essentials 2012. You can install comcast on there

Apologies if this has already been discussed.

I use an app to change lock screen images. The most frequent the app can change the image is every 15 minutes. I emailed the developer asking had they any plans to make this more frequent. They emailed back very quick and explained something about windows only allowing apps to refresh tile/lock screen app info every 15 minutes.

A quick Google search gives you this

Windows 8 Store app : Background task interval between reexecution - Stack Overflow

So that sort of put the pieces altogether in my long search for a decent mail app! The ones, that I'm aware of, that have live tile capability are Yahoo! Mail, Gmail Alerts, MailXprZ and since yesterday Gmail Touch.

Out of those, Yahoo! Mail (and now Gmail Touch) is the only one with lock screen notification functionality, and so is an outright alternative to using the built-in windows app. However I've been cursing it out since about how "slow" it is to update (notify you of new message). A long delay in notifying you of new mail, and another long delay after reading and deleting the message for the new mail notification to leave the tile and lock screen. (the same applies to Gmail Touch)

But knowing that there is a 15 minute restriction, it makes sense now.
So, does all that mean, no matter how 'brilliant' any email app is in functionality, it will never beat the built-in mail app for the refresh time, which is pretty much instantaneous?

A:App tile refresh time (specifically for mail app)

actually, I think the tile for the live tile updating is shorter than 15 minutes but still longer than desired.

the best way to measure is to use a clock tile app that has live updating. When the clock first updates, the tile will show the correct time. Between that update and the next update of the tile, time will pass while the tile still shows the time of the last update. At the next refresh, the time will be correct again.

I've stopped using live tile clocks as a result. But I've never seen it drift 15 minutes off.

I don't know about lock screen functionality as I don't really use that functionality.

I am having a small problem with the metro mail tile. When someone sends me an email with a link to a website, and I click on it, it opens up in the "metrofied" version of chrome. I would prefer it to open in the desktop version of chrome. I am fairly certain that my default web browser is the desktop version of chrome. How do I check what my default browser is, or does anyone know a way to fix this? Thanks.

A:Metro Mail Tile and email links.

If you are accessing your mail through the Metro email App the links will open up in Metro IE or what ever you are using for a browser in Metro. I don't see any settings to change this behavior.

You may need to install a desktop version of the Email client in order for the links to open in desktop browsers, I'm not sure which email client you are using.

I can access my Hotmail account directly from desktop IE without having to install anything else by just going to Favorites lower right and clicking on the Hotmail link. You may be able to do this for Gmail and others not sure.

Since I'm already signed into my Windows Live account my mail connects directly from desktop IE and email links open up in desktop IE as usual.

somebody can straighten me out. I have tried to use the new Win 8 stuff on my desktop but I came across a couple of things I didn't see how to overcome. I"m certainly open to any advice to get me back on the path.

I thought I would clean up my Inbox. Normally, I'd sort by name and then click and shift-click to select the ones for deletion and that would be it. With the new app I couldn't find any way to sort by name and delete.

I was composing a message to a friend and remembered he had asked me a couple of questions in an earlier email. Normally I would have opened the other message and read it to refresh my memory about the questions. No way to open a second message while the one I am currently writing is open. So I downloaded and installed Live Mail 2012.

I might as well throw in the other new app that is poor IMO. The picture viewer. Can't do anything much with it and if you have a multipage jpg file such as a bunch of combined scans you can only see the first one. When you back out, you end up back at My Pictures not at the folder containing the picture you started with. If I wanted the OS to think like this for me and tell me where it thinks I should put my files, I'd have bought a darn Mac. So back to the Win 7 style picture program.

Like I said, I'm willing to be enlightened. I do like Win 8 but the above problems are real negative influences on my productivity.

A:Goodbye Mail Tile app and Picture Viewer unless...

It's true that the mail app is... well, limited. But it works pretty well for basic email. There are a few tricks you do.

For instance, for deleting mail by a specific user, you can simply search for that user (WinKey+Q) and then you can highlight and delete. Not as simple as sorting, and you need to re-search for each group of emails, but it's at least an option.

These apps are basic apps, and you can expect that more powerful ones will be coming down the pike. Meanwhile, you might try any of the dozens of other photo apps in the Windows Store. (You did install all the latest Windows Store App updates, right?)

Windows Live Essentials 2012 also has a photo app.

This will remove Mail and calendar and preserve account settings.
Open Store (if it was already open you must close it before)
On the search bar type "Mail and Calendar"
It should be the first App found.
Click on Free to start download.
Wait until it finishes and re-open Mail and Calendar, you will see your previous accounts already listed.

When I set up the computer for her I installed Stardock so she wasn't faced with the fullscreen apps, and I installed Windows Live Mail because that is what she was used to. Could anyone suggest how to troubleshoot this? Many thanks, Monty

Recently Windows has been hanging a little after closing Firefox and/or Windows Live Mail. For example, if I close Firefox or WM (Windows Mail) and click on the Start button or anything for that matter Windows will hang maybe 2 seconds before it loads it. It didn't used to do this. I've ran anti virus/spyware programs (Which returned no real threats) and Ccleaner. I've defragmented and ran check disk too so my files should be clean and in order for quick access. I actually recently had to reinstall Windows XP (32bit) so it's a pretty fresh install. As far as I know the drivers and whatnot should be up-to-date too. As for the game, it's particulary only one as I notice lags in a certain way that never had before. It's America's Army and every so often I will get this lag that will last for a few seconds and just go away. It will make the game real sluggish but only for about 4 or so seconds but gets quite annoying as this didn't used to happen before. I've tried system restore to go back to a point where I didn't think it had been doing this but none of the restore points were available for some reason and the one it did let me restore to didn't help. I don't notice any processes running that look suspicious or that shouldn't be running. I've also noticed the past few times I boot up and while loading windows my mouse will freeze for just a second which is also not normal.

I do have my CPU, ram and vid... Read more

A:Windows XP hangs a little after closing Firefox or Windows Mail and lag games.

A little update...

I ran Advance WindowsCare V2 Peronal and let it "clean and fix" everything but I still get the delay/lag after closing almost any program. For instance, I opened up Windows defrag utility, closed it and tried clocking on start and it didn't open for about 3 or 4 seconds. I don't know what's causing this but it will also slow my game mention above down like I have something else using a lot of CPU power or something for a few seconds...and this happens in the game quite often...I'd say it does it at least once every minute.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? It's very annoying and I would hate to have to reinstall Windows since I just literally got everything reinstalled and copied back over when this problem started occurring. If you need any more info or logs, let me know. Thanks.

Yes, I understand that to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 you must go through the Store in the Modern UI/Metro environment, but, well into the first day of the Windows 8.1 upgrade release, the initial tile for that upgrade is still saying:
'Windows 8.1 Preview'.

That threatens implications that I'd rather not contemplate.

Is anyone else seeing '..Preview' on the Store tile?
Has anyone ignored the Preview reference and chosen the download link beneath it?

For the past week, something is effecting Firefox when in Yahoo Mail. It does not happen at any other web site.: 64 bit Win7 Home Premium, dial-up internet connection

Firefox starts doing something very intensive once in Yahoo Mail. Sometimes it is in this state when it displays the first screen of mail boxes after I sign on. More often I can do a little bit of something, such as open a mail box or a single e-mail therein before the problem starts. From my perspective it starts this aberrant behavior just when I click on the next thing: open another e-mail; open a different mail box; delete an e-mail.

Normally while in Yahoo Mail, or at any other web site, Task Manager reports CUP usage at from 0% to 5%, occasionally a few percent more for a very brief flash. When this Yahoo Mail thing starts
# The CPU usage jumps to 25%, with occasional bursts up to 30+%. Task Manger shows it is due to the process firefox.exe*32.
# The browser will not respond to any controls. I can do nothing with the keyboard or mouse. No menu will open. This peculiar activity has never ended on its own.
# Task Manager reports the immediate drop of network activity to zero -- nothing going on over the phone line -- or so Windows thinks. Disconnecting the phone line does not release the browser or lower its CPU use.
# A few times the entire computer has locked. I have only been able to get out of it with the hardware reset button.
# Sometimes Firefox is totally unresponsive itself but I can cancel it via... Read more

A long-standing problem I have is that email links with mailto cause the Outlook email to hang, and I have to kill the process. In other words, if I click on a person's email which has the form mailto:[email protected] I get the Outlook email form but the cursor turns into an hour-glass which does not go away until I kill the process.

My Outlook email uses the POP/SMTP of my ISP but I use my Yahoo email predominantly and would like the mailto to bring up my Yahoo email form so that I could write into it, not the Outlook form with the hour-glass!

Must my default email be the Outlook? How can I change this, or can I? But most of all, why do I always get this "hang" that I have to kill?

I have Windows XP SP2 Home Edition.

Thanks for any insight into this.

Thanks, Mardy

A:Mailto Hangs Outlook Mail

The mail to: function always brings up an email client such as Outlook on your desktop. You can change which one it brings up by opening Internet Explorer & at the top choose Tools > Internet Options > Programs, clicking the down arrow next to Email: as shown in the pic below, & selecting something other than Outlook. Click Apply > Ok & your done. You should then configure the newly selected program to check/send your email from your ISP & your Yahoo account. I'm personally going to try to make this simple, and yet cover all of my problems in a small thread.

I updated windows 8.1 pro with wmc from store.

I had NO problems, received no error messages, had no dc's, the power didn't shut off, the download didn't stop .. literally nothing went wrong. After update everything worked fine. All the apps are downloaded and were working fine.

After 2/3 months since updated, I suddenly noticed that every live tile / folder / app / game / setting etc. which were working fine, now not working.
When I clicked on any tile, nothing happened. It just went to a blank green screen because my background color is green. It appears on the left upper corner as opened but doesn't run. When I click, I am send back to Start Screen or Desktop. Even Store and Windows Setting stopped working. So, naturally i started checking the web for answers, but couldn't find a solution to the exact problem i was having. I saw countless posts of people saying "Just uninstall / re-install the apps" but at first, I couldn't get my App store app to run. Again, it was just blank after several minutes of waiting. I was able to download it after using the search bar menu on the right side of my computer, and was able to start installing some apps.
So i thought that everything was going to be ok, but then I ran into another problem where some of the apps wouldn't install, and I received an error message with the code/number of 0x80070002... Read more

Sometimes when I type keys that require CTRL+ALT (ALT-GR) I hit a key by accident that completely messes up my desktop. It tiles all my windows, and as I usually have a lot open each window becomes microscopic and it's just a nuisance to clear it all up. I'm not sure exactly which key cause it, I haven't been able to pin it down.

So the question is, how can I "undo" this? If there isn't an undo, what keyboard shortcut cause windows to tile, and is there a way to disable it?

Hi All,
We are in the final stages of our preparation to roll out Windows 8.1 using SCCM2012....and we'd like to use the thumbnailPhoto attribute already populated for our user base in the Windows 8.1 tile. We already have Outlook and Lync pulling this attribute out and diplaying fine, so it's just a solution for the 8.1 tile that is missing.
Having tried many blogs and other links, nothing seems to work.

Where do I start? I still love XP but I guess since I've been purchasing computers since 1988 I should have learned nothing is static about computers. Somehow I uninstalled the MAIL tile from the Metro Screen. I went to the MS Store but didn't see it there. Did I also uninstall the whole feature?

Also, these lame replacements from, Yahoo and Gmail. I guess there's nothing we can do now to send really nice emails with graphics such as we could with Outlook using Word as our editors?

Is Thunderbird a good replacement and how does that work?

I cannot find a Gmail app at the store although I found a Yahoo app. How lame these programs look. I don't even see a place for contacts ... yet!

I appreciate your help and I'm afraid you may see me here often. After using XP for 6 years and knowing all the tips and tricks and how to get into and around all issues, 8 makes me feel like a newbie all over again. Hate it!

Thanks, jack

A:Wow! From 6 years of XP to Windows 8. OS Shock. Metro Tile

Hi Jack!

Welcome to Eightforums!

The MAIL tile is part of the "Agenda, Mail and persons" tile. So search on "Agenda" and you should be able to find it.

Isn't it great that Microsoft can even make the 'nerds' feel like they are newbie all over again? I loved the feeling myself! Beeing able to search the net for an answer to an obvious easy question. The feeling that you have to find it all out again. To be able to make the journey again..... I'm loving every minute of Windows 8!

So, my advise to you is. Don't give up. Give Windows 8 a change. Don't hate it that you feel like a newbie all over again. Love every second of it, because it probably will be another few decades before you can experience it again.

And, if you have any questions ==> ask everybody at this forum!

Just upgraded to 8.1 and noticed the new dynamic tile color feature. For non-metro apps, it seems that there's some algorithm that picks out the "primary" color of your legacy icons, then makes the tile background a similar color.

This has the benefit of making tile backgrounds for non-metro programs more colorful, but the algorithm really seems to like a particularly hideous shade of orange, and it also makes no effort to avoid picking tile colors that cause your icons to disappear into the tile background. There are certain tiles on my start screen where you actually can't even see anything but a solid orange or purple or blue tile with a vaguely discernable shape in the middle.

It's a headache, and I would love it if I could just turn this thing off. The neutral tones of the Windows 8 tile colors were far preferable.

Someone please tell me they found a registry value that I can change/destroy so that I don't cringe whenever I hit the start button.

A:Windows 8 Desktop Icons in Tile View

Well, just after posting this, I finally managed to fix this problem. Here is how I did it if anyone else runs into this issue.

1. Run regedit
2. Go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\1\Desktop"
3. Locate the "LogicalViewMode" and "Mode" keys
4. Bring up the Windows Task Manager.
5. Kill the "explorer.exe" task. Any changes to the keys made above will not take while explorer.exe is running.
6. Change "LogicalViewMode" to 3 and "Mode" to 5.
7. In the Windows Task Manager, click the File > Run New Task option, type in "explorer" and push enter
8. Your icons should be returned to their normal state.

I'm using Windows 8.1, and I have accidentally deleted the SkyDrive App Tile and am trying to find a way to restore it.

What happened was that I deleted the SkyDrive shortcut in the start menu, only to realise that doing this also deleted the SkyDrive App Tile in Metro View.

Is there a way to restore the SkyDrive App Tile? I have tried searching for SkyDrive under Apps but it isn't there, presumably because it is integrated into Windows 8.1. I also found the SkyDrive menu that the SkyDrive App Tile is a shortcut to under PC Settings, but it doesn't look like it's possible to make a shortcut to it directly from Metro View.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Only a few days ago I realised that both my computers (windows 8.1) had live tiles enabled in the metro interface, and that they had been downloading things for them (various new pictures to be displayed on the tiles, and alos adverts for apps available in windows' store. I disabled the live tiles (there was only one, the windows store) on both machines as soon as I realised this. So they won't be wasting any more of my bandwidth downloading png pictures of apps I don't care about.
This however got me thinking: If the windows store shows adverts, and these adverts are shown (atleast in some sense) through the live tiles, then could these tiles end up distributing viruses? As far as I could tell the only things be downloaded (and wasting a small amount of my bandwidth) were png images, but part of me wonders if flash animations (with hidden exploits) or exe files could be downloaded and run like this? Has this ever happened yet? I have no particular cause to think it has happened to me but the fact that these tiles exist like this and do what they do makes me think it could happen some day? If it could then that would be a huge problem waiting to happen, viruses delivered through a running function on a computer that most people would never even think to look at.
Would it be possible? Has it ever happened yet? The same concern would probably affect windows 10 as well, because it too has live tiles.

A:Could an infection be delivered via a live tile in windows 8/8.1 ?

Tile images are usually hosted by programs so in order to get malicious one would require you to install one of those. You can still create one of your own and for example poll data from
website. It usually involves downloading image and small config file. In this case the host is IE.
Technically it could be possible to send some malformed config which then uses some vulnerability within system itself in order to inject malicious code. Still would still require you or some other program in your computer to create new live tile. I don't think it would be very useable case since you already have an access to the system at that point.
I don't think its going to be any less secure then just surfing over web. Microsoft controls Windows Store so there shouldn't be any problem with that matter of malicious data being send over their channels.
If there were some major security issues with this I think they would have been noticed at this point. But this is majorly just speculation on my part.
So as Didier Stevens pointed out, live tile hosts(Apps) are run inside sandbox environment. Most malicious active would require to escape that sandbox or use
some other exploit. As with the regular programs, user discretion is still advised when installing apps.

A:metro mail hangs and doesn't work sometime

That is because Metro uses JavaScript, HTML5, Visual Basic, .net and TragicX, depending on the app.

You can run Metro app's from Desktop mode if you use Stardock Software "Metro Mix". Along with Start8.

Personally I would use the Web email page for emails, vs an OS based. I started doing that, When I was dealing with my kids when they were younger, would use my login on the desktop, if I took a break from it.

If you want a better email client. Use Mozilla's Thunderbird. It only works in win8 Desktop. But a lot more powerful than the neutered Metro email app.

When you set it up. Set it to leave emails in your online account/server. It will download the emails. Then as you delete them, Thunderbird will tell the email server to put them in the trash.

The tiles in the 1st column take too much space vertically so windows scrolls all the tiles down. That's what's happening.

Is anyone else experiencing a problem as such? As you can see, all the tiles I modified have the selected colours applied in OlbyTile, but the images all consist of Internet Explorer icons. I recently reset my Lenovo laptop which is running Windows 8.1, using a recovery USB that I created when I initially bought it. After doing a full reset, I noticed that I can no longer rename tile groups on the start menu. I hold ctrl+mwheeldown to zoom out, and can still rearrange the tile groups, but if I right click on one, nothing happens. In the past, doing so would allow me to give the group a name (eg: naming a group of tiles for various IDEs as 'Development'). I know this shouldn't be the end of the world, but it's really bothersome considering I reset the PC to start fresh with a clean slate. I did not have this issue before I did the reset.

Hello Carpediem, and welcome to Eight Forums.

When Store apps are opened, they use the full display of the monitor they are opened on and cannot be changed. If you set your displays to act like one display (ex: Eyefinity), then the Store app will naturally fill all of them.

The only way to prevent this is to not have all of your displays act as one display.

If you have an image that is larger enought to display on all monitors at once, then you will still be able to set it as your desktop background for all monitors. This doesnt help wth the desktop itself though.

Most likely a quirk of 8.1.x that has not been found yet. Majority are using Desktop mode, so they never notice these issues. I would submit a ticket to MS, showing the issue. You will have to also show that all programs are installed and able to run (Screen print of Event log showing where you ran the program, then stopped it.

The engineers would tell you exact information to look into why they screwed up.

Hey guys,

I have a question about my IE. There seems to be something wrong with it, when I use it to check my Gmail emails. Whenever I select emails, you know, by checking the check boxes (selecting) to delete or move etc, everytime I click a check box, it takes maybe 15 seconds to check the box. It sort of just hangs, and it does that with all check boxes. It didn't use to do this, I used to be able to delete 10 messages in 5 seconds, now it takes 2 minutes just to select all of 10. I'm not sure what the cause can be. I thought maybe Gmail changed some of their scripts or something which caused this, but I've tried googling, couldn't find anyone with this problem. I know its only in Gmail, because when I use my hotmail account, it doesn't do this. I've also tried other emails and webforms with check boxes, and it doesnt do this. There seems to be something wrong with my IE, because when I login to my Gmail account with my roommate's computer, everything is fine. But then again, he is using a older version of IE. I'm using IE7. I have tried using Netscape 8.0 to check the boxes, and it works fine. So it has got to be my IE!

Windows XP Pro running on a Dell Optiplex with various business apps; not much personal stuff.

Gang I have seen this problem before and solved it but this time I'm getting stumped.
we have an application [bookeeping] that does reports - you pull the report up on the screen then either archive it or print it or whatever, and one option is to send it via email. That function worked fine until it broke
But it isn't just dormant... the behaviour is that it does invoked Outlook Express, the window pops up but then it freezes - that is goes non-responsive. At that point everybody stops.... you cannot input anything in the To: field, and when you look at the apps in Task manager they are 'not-responding'. in some cases the machine [winxp pro on a dell opti] will have a hard hang where it will not respond to a restart command or anything else. Most of the time however we can kill both applications and get coherent again.

How to solve? In checking the windows error log I see nothing being created co-incident with this problem. there are a few other warnings & such, one of which relates to the application in question but has nothing to do with the Send-To function.
The error is just not generating a windows report. so no help there.

I'm baffled.....

Windows 8.1 tile apps, no issues on desktop, give me Internet connection errors. Apps like euronews say that I am not connected to the Internet and I am. I also get "internal error" on other apps. Anyone can help?

A:Windows 8.1 tile apps give me Internet connection errors

You may want to try Stardock Software's Metro Mix. It will allow you to run Metro Apps from the desktop. The problem with Metro. Is that it uses a mix of Javascript & html5. A lot of apps in the Microsoft App store are poorly written. So in turn, you have issues.

Some have found that the problem is also as simple as the third party Internet Security or Firewall software that they may be using. See metro apps can not connect to internet! for further help.

Prior to upgrading to Windows 10 Phone (Mobile?), when I pinned a web site to the start page, the tile contained an icon representation for the web site. That made it easy to know which tile to press to go to that web site directly.
After up grading to Windows Phone 10, all of the tiles now show the E from Edge itself. Now I have a bunch of tiles all showing the same icon, Edge's E, making it hard to know what tile is a shortcut to a specific web site.
How do I get the icon for the web site back onto the tile.

MS and their mail systems are giving me grief. I have a Vista 32 PC using "Windows Mail" and want to transfer email folders (lots) and messages to Windows 7 using Windows Live Mail 2011.

Note: Windows Mail was a replacement for Outlook express on Vista.
Windows Live Mail 2011 is a replacement for Windows Mail on Windows 7.

I tried a couple of things.

1) Basic Export and ImportI exported relavent files: Account info, Contacts and all the messages to a folder (in Windows Mail format) on old computer and used the old "Addias" transfer - copied folder to stick and RAN it over to the new computer.
- Imported (using the Windows Mail format) the Account info successfully,
- imported the Contact info successfully.
- Import Messages - appeared at first to be successful

Issue: Message folders appear to be renamed and some folder names have been truncated, not all folders appear to be there. (Looks like "long Name folders greater that 8 characters get truncated)

2) Tried the "Easy transfer mechanism (Vista and Win7 transfer utility) - but couldn't get the new computer to see the Vista even though I could see them on the network. I thought that this would transfer the folder names correctly.
I'm about to try a time consuming effort of coping folder by folder (export/Import)
What I am more concerned about is that the individaul messages may have the same issue Ie not all coming accross and subject names being lost.

A:Solved: Troubles transferring Windows Mail Vista to Win7 Windows Live Mail 2011

I get a little nauseous just thinking about Windows Live Mail 2011, much less expending effort to use it, but I would try installing it on the Vista and see if it has the option right up front of importing stuff from Windows Mail. If it does, and happens to work correctly, then all you would have to do is find its files and copy them over.

By the way, are you putting on airs with "Addias" transfer? We plebeians just used "sneaker net."

I currently have three Email Accounts. 1 x Windows Mail, and 2 x Windows Live Mail.

I would like to clean out all the File Folders in both locations, but still preserve my existing Folder setups, at the same time.

If I try to Export the Message contents of a Folder to DVD [E:/ Folder], I get this Error message;
Is there any way that I can get around this, so that I can create a DVD Archive of all of my Emails.

Basically, I just wish to clear out all the old Emails from each Account, but still retain a record of them, at the same time.

Hello Tony,

You will need to export to a empty folder on your desktop first, then copy that folder to the DVD, or place that folder in a ZIP and copy the ZIP to the DVD.

I have read many of the other forum threads hoping to solve this issue... to no avail.

I have been running Windows Mail on my laptop for seven months now with no issue. After changing my password, Windows Mail no longer wants to send or receive email.

I have tried many things (from other people's successes) to solve this problem:
- Changed my password again (note: both password changes have been successful in my webmail and in downloading to my Blackberry)
- Removed the email account and readded it
- Disabled the auto scan components of McAfee
- Uninstalled McAfee
- Repeated earlier deletions and additions of my email account
- Downloaded Windows Live Mail to the same errors and repeat of the above
- Reset my password/account through the email host/server

Here is the error message from Windows Live Mail:
Unable to send or receive messages for the (christine) account. An incorrect password was entered. The next time you send or receive messages, you'll be asked to enter your user name and password for this account.

One of my computers has 3 or 4 emails that dropped into the junk mail folder in my Windows Live Mail for Windows 7 and I cannot seem to get rid of them.  I have tried to repair it in the control panel, and have tried a couple suggestions and steps from the internet, but I still cannot get rid of them.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get rid of it?  Should I just delete the Junk folder all together, and then create a new one?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey everyone. I have been on a mission to solve this problem. I've been seeking out and posting on several MS/tech/computer support forums looking for an answer. I've also spent quite a bit of time googling for a solution on my own. So far I have come up empty handed.

My situtaiton and problem is as follows:

I'm working in a small office where we have some computers running Windows Vista and using Windows Mail (version 6.0.6000.16388). We have hundreds of contacts and a couple of contact groups on these computer.

A few months ago we got two new computers which are using Windows XP and Windows Live mail (version 2009, build 14.0.8089.0726). Other computers in the office still have Vista and the other version of Windows Mail.

I have been able to export our hundreds of contacts and import them into Windows Live Mail so the new computers have all of the contacts... however I was unable to find a way to import the groups.

These groups are all very large and consist mostly/entirely out of contacts which don't have individual contact entries.

I have been googling to find a solution to this problem. The closest page I could find was this one:

I was very discouraged when I saw the big red warning near the top of the page:

In Contact Groups from Vista, only the contacts that are also included as normal Contacts will be imported into Windows Live Mail. Contacts that were created fo... Read more

I copied my "Windows Mail Contacts folder" from my previous Windows Vista pc to my new Windows 7 pc. I have close to 4,000 contacts and they are all organized in subfolders. How can I import them to Windows Live Mail while keeping them all organized as they were in Windows Mail on Vista? If I have to manually organize them again it will be an endless task. I have built this organized list of contacts over several years of work. For people like myself who rely on this type of organized list of contacts for work purposes, switching from Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail could possibly be a nightmare. I really hope there's a positive quick solution.

Please could I have some help on Windows Live Mail?

I have just upgraded to a new PC running 8.1. I have installed Windows Live Mail which seems to be regarded as the best email client.

I have about 11 GB of messages from my previous Vista installation (seven years of my life) which I would like to be able to manage in WLM.

I have imported them using the File/Import Messages/Windows Mail command but I can't see any of them in WLM. They appear to been imported in WM format and so aren't readable.

In that case, I'm not quite sure what is the point of the import function. Can anyone suggest a solution please?

Hi there,

I have - quite stupidly, as I now think - installed Windows Seven on my old Vista on my Laptop without thinking about the Mail program at all. That is: neither did I make a backup nor did I export contact lists from Windows Mail, etc.

I was, however, able to import most of the stuff from Windows Mail into Windows Live Mail anyway. I took ownership of both Windows Mail folders (in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) including subs 'n files, and tried the import function in Windows Live Mail - three times, I think.

I can't really tell whether or not all my messages are there, yet I can say for sure that what I find in the Storage Folders section in Windows Live Mail reproduces only a part of the filing system I had established in Windows Mail. That is to say: A lot of the folders I used to have in Windows Mail are simply missing. Are the messages that used to be in there missing, too? No idea so far... they might be in the Inbox or somewhere else.

To be sure, I have everything, that is: all my messages, on my webmail-account. Yet it took me forever to work out my huge filing system (including all the message rules, etc.) in Windows Mail which allows me to have more folders than my webmail account that is for some reason limited to 258 folders. So even although I know that in the end I do have all the messages on my webmail, I would just hate to have to do all that work again! Thus I'd just love to "simply" get my Webmail stuff imported as it was.... Read more

I have an Windows (Vista) notebook with outlook 2007, and now I have an new notebook with Windows 8.1. Where I want to export my mail & contact to Windows live mail, how can I import this in WLM on my other notebook?

I already have configure my mail on WLM where I can receive and send messages. I tried something with the program Mailstore 8 but my mail is now on another computer.

I also find this link: how to export mail, calendar contact in outlook to windows live mail clientWith the "Outlook Conversion Application" solution but is this possible on different computers and has WLM an import function?

A:Export mail and contacts from Outlook 2007 to Windows live mail 2012?

Don I might be way off track here mate but was the Outlook account the same email address as you have set up in WLM?

Just a thought you might try adding an account to WLM using the old address and password. I did this with my old account from my service provider then went to a Hotmail account.
Now admittedly it was still within WLM but worth a try.

What I will do is try and add my work account (Outlook) to my WLM and see if it works.

PS It added the account but I have to get the POP and STMP settings right first.

Completely baffled. I've sync'd Windows mail with my Gmail account, everything back and forth is fine. Trying to send email w/attachments from Word 2003 results in nothing-no error, no nothing. I have the 'mail' icon on Word 2003 set, I can access the 'send to mail recipient' on 'file' so that I can enter email addresses to send the attached file to whomever-but when I click Send...nothing. I am absolutely at my wits end, and I can't self diagnose this to fix it. Again, my Gmail and Windows Mail are sync'd fine-can send msgs back and forth. About to blow a gasket on this, have depositions to send and can't! thanks so much

Microsoft is "upgrading" people's,,, and accounts, to a new (built upon the latest Office 365 infrastructure), which is INcompatible with Live Mail 2012 (and presumably older versions as well):  Effective late June 2016, Windows Live Mail 2012 will no longer synchronize emails, contacts, and calendar events from these email accounts.
People who use Windows Live Mail 2012 to connect to other email services, including Gmail, Yahoo Mail, or other services that use POP3 or IMAP protocols, do not need to take action.
Is this another veiled attempt to force users to "upgrade" from Windows 7?
Users can still access their e-mail via their web browser(s).   Or they can use the new and/or a Mail app on Windows 8.1/10

I have been using WLM for some years. Yesterday, it stopped sending emails and now just leaves them in the Outbox. Here is most of what appears in the error box:

The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's email address. The sender's email address was '[email protected]'.
Subject 'Newsflash'
Server Error: 553
Server Response: 553 Sorry, over your daily relay limit.
Server: ''
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC78
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 80
Secure(SSL): No

I don't send many emails and don't send emails with large attachments, so I don't know why the "over your daily relay limit" message appears.

Port 80 has worked for a long time and works (sends emails) from the other computers on the network, so it doesn't seem like I should need to select a different port number.

The "My server requires authentication" box is selected/ticked.

None of the settings have been changed for a long time.

Our ISP is GoDaddy.

Thanks for any advice.

I have several accounts in Windows Mail to use in different locations. When I am at home I set the appropriate account as Default. Windows Mail uses this reliably when creating mail. However, when replying to incoming mail the programme always tries to use another account (not default but one I use in Portugal) and of course it fails to Send because the settings are not correct. I have to manually change the account in the outgoing address box. Any solution?
