I have a Dell Windows 8.1 computer. For the last couple of months when I turn on the computer and the sign in page comes up there is an overlay of a photo. Once I touch any key it disappears. This photo is one that I had stored in Pictures, so I thought I could go there and remove it. I looked at all pictures thru the Gallery and it is not even there. Don't know where it is saved. So how do I get rid of this?

A:Sign-in page mystery

Are you talking about the Lock Screen? If so, see this Personalize your PC to see how to change the picture.

If you have 8.1 Pro I assume the following still works for eliminating the Lock Screen entirely ...

To disable the lock screen in Windows 8 Pro ...

In a Run box type gpedit.msc (and press ENTER). Navigate to Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - Control Panel - Personalization in the left menu. Double-click the Do Not Display the Lock Screen option in the main pane to open a new window. Select the Enabled radio button, click OK. (from PCWorld magazine, March 2013)

A:Html/ftp sign up page

First off there are php/mysql scripts that you can buy that will create folders for people that also gives them an ftp account.

You'll have to look around at http://www.hotscripts.com and to the best of my knowledge most of them cost money.

Second you could use htaccess(assuming you're using apache) to protect your folder.
Heres one little tutorial I quickly grabbed -> http://www.tomsnewbiebooster.com/password-protecting-a-folder.html

You can go to google.com and search for more just type htaccess password protecting folder.

Hello - can anyone please explain this to me. When I arrive at work in the morning I sign in to techsupport before I start work, to see what is happening. This has never been a problem until Friday of last week. When I tried to sign in I got a blank page with this written at the top "In order to accept POST request from this domain the admin must add this domain to the white list". At first I thought it was the computer at work, but then tonight I tried to sign in under my husbands account on this PC and got the same message. Under my own account it is not a problem.

I have been having trouble for a month or more with my PC being very slow to load anything, especially the Hotmail Sign in page when I first switch on.
I installed and used RegCleaner yesterday - that was before I read your advice (Geekgirl) saying not to do this! (ask Leo quote). I unfortunately had not discovered this site yesterday.
Hotmail takes well over a minute and a half to load - and everything is slow anyway.
Anybody got any ideas please?

A:Always slow, especially Hotmail Sign in page

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Spyware can slow down a system by 500% !!! Make sure your system is clean by running multiple scans.

Is the system just slow on the internet or overall slow?

Reboot your isp modem/router. Disconnect the power cord for about 30 seconds and reconnect.

I don't know if this is the right place for this topic, but I've narrowed down the problem, so hopefully it is.  I have a new ASUS notebook running Windows 8.1 with IE 11.  I also bought Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013.  I tried to install it, and can put the key # in, and when I click on "Redeem online", the webpage for MS Office comes up, but a pop-up box eventually says the page is taking longer than expected....  and never goes past that point.  If I go directly to the Office website, same thing, pop-up box and message.
If I try to get on that website on another computer, it goes right to the sign-in page.  So its something to do with that actual page on my new ASUS computer.

Any suggestions?

A:Can't get to Microsoft Office sign in page on new laptop

There have been a lot of issues with Windows 8.1 and IE11. But, try changing the DNS servers to OpenDNS as shown in this link. If you have DNS servers listed, right them down before changing them. Note: Flush the DNS cache  and browser cache as shown in the links at the bottom of the page.

Hi, I am new to Windows 7 32bit. I am having a problem when I am downloading or trying to back up my data on my harddisk, after 1 or 2 minutes the computer reverts back to my sign in page...and it shows that as being 'locked'....and also a 'Change User'-I have a Guest Account but it is turned off. When I resign in it then goes back to the original page but again cycles back to the sign in page..again and again.
I only have an Admin account(password protected) and a Guest account I would like to delete but don't know how.
How do I get this 'unlocked' status off my sign in page(Admin user) and how do I get the computer to stop cycling back to that page whenever I have to perform a task as downloading pictures or backing up my system(which are the only 2 I have encountered SO FAR)..??
Please help,
Rob

A:computer going back to sign in page when downloading..

Before it goes to the login screen, does a screensaver or a blank screen and then it goes to the login screen when you move the mouse / press a key. If so, open the start menu and type Change Screensaver. Press enter and then there should be a check box that says "On resume, display logon screen", make sure it is unchecked. Also if you don't want any screensaver (if there is one set), click the drop down box and click "None"

I Hope I'm understanding the question correctly and am giving you the right answer.

I have two laptop computers. Both have WinXP and IE8 on them.
One (Dell) my Hotmail account (Now called Outlook by MS) sign in page shows up fine and it is easy to get
into any of my three different Hotmail accounts.

The other laptop (HP) just shows a blank page when I go to the sign in page for Hotmail. I do not use this computer
as often since it is mainly a backup to the Dell, but I have updated it regularly regarding MS and IE updates as well
as for viruses, spyware, etc..

What do I need to do to get the Hotmail account sign in page to show up properly on my HP?
I do not seem to have any other problems displaying pages or accessing of any other internet sites I try to visit from the
HP computer including this site.

Thanks for any suggestions that anyone has regarding this problem.

I can enter my email address, but the box below, for password entry, is partially covered by the blue 'continue' button, which makes entry impossible. I've been able to login via the yahoo help page (they sent a verification code via sms), but I'd like to solve this problem.

Welcome to Seven Forums DharamSingh89. Which browser are you using to try and sign in? Have you tried with another browser? I would try to access the sign in page in Safe Mode with Networking and see if it works there. If so, try a clean start to see if you can find a conflict.

Safe Mode

Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

If no help, it will be a tough one since it is specific to that one sign in page, and they have a known issue who's solution did not help you. If you don't have a second browser to test, it is a good idea to download Firefox, or Chrome to have as a second choice if needed, and to test this issue.

Hi,

Trying to sign-in to Yahoo mail, (at https://login.yahoo.com/config/login? so I am fairly sure its the genuine site), but looks like a "text only" version, no graphics, and getting an error message after supplying credentials "This page requires that you have Javascript enabled on your browser", which is strange because I do. Have checked browser settings (both Chrome and Firefox).

Have gone to http://www.javatester.org/javascript.html which says

JavaScript IS WORKING in your web browser
Your web browser supports JavaScript version 1.7
Your web browser is Chrome version 26.0.1410.

Every web browser identifies itself to websites with a character string called the "user agent". The User Agent string for your web browser is:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1) AppleWebKit/537.31 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/26.0.1410.64 Safari/537.31

Not having this problem with any other website. Yahoo sign-in was working sort-of OK a couple of weeks ago (was able to sign-in but was text-based and most pages were very slow).
Have tried Yahoo Customer Support but again its all text based and cant find a link that you can actually CONTACT people with, only look at static answers - perhaps that also needs Javascript to be detected to work properly!

Searched the TSG Forums and found this from a couple of years back, problem description seems the same but it seems to have resolved itself spontaneously so have started a new thread:

Howdy:

I have two WindowsXP laptop computers. On one (Dell) which I use regularly, I have no problems with the Hotmail login page or much of anything else.
The other (HP) is used very irregularly since it is a backup. It was working fine the last time I used it a few months ago, but now whenever I try to log into my Hotmail account, the sign in page is blank. I have updated the different MS patches that came out for WinXP while I was not using the account, the Malware and anti-virus programs have been updated and do not detect any problems This problem with the sign in page occurs when I use IE8. When I use Firefox it works fine.

I see other people have had the same problem, but seems like nobody has found a real solution. I am wondering why one computer would work fine while the other developed this problem while being off and unplugged from the wall.

Thanks for any help. I am wondering if I should format the whole computer and then re-install Windows XP which I like better than Windows 7 that I have on a newer computer.

I have read and initiated all of the suggestions in the sticky about secure websites on this forum.  When I'm at auduble.com and click the "sign in" link, the URL briefly changes to the sign in URL and then reverts back to the home page.  Strangely, this is the only site I have a problem with.  I am using Win 7, IE9, Norton Internet Security.  The problem started after I upgraded to IE10, although am not convinced that was the cause. I did a Reset on IE, then reverted back to IE9 and then IE8 with no luck, so upgraded to IE9 for now.  I have done complete scans with NIS, MalwareBytes, MalwaeBytes Anti-Rootkit, Super AntiSpyWare, Microsoft Malicious Removal Tool.  I have deleted all cookies, history, temps, MRUs, etc using CCleaner, Disk Cleanup, ATF Cleaner, and IE's browsing history delete.  I don't have this problem with Firefox or Chrome.  I am good at keeping a clean computer and frequently clean up other people's computers, but I have never seen this problem before.  Any suggestions?

thanks!

When I click on email links on websites, instead of my mail program coming up with the address in the "to" line, I get a mail sign in page. To avoid it, I have to right click and copy email address, then go to my mail program and paste it in. What a pain. Can this be fixed?

A:Clicking email links takes me to mail sign-in page

Hello Snail,

Ok bring up control panel:

1. + R
2. type "Control", click "ok"
3.in the search bar type "Default"
4.Click, "set your Default programs"
Note: This will now scan your system for the applications you have installed.
5. Find the application you want set as your default Mail client, click it and press "Set this programme as default"

then click "choose the Defaults for this programme" because we are going to have make sure a few settings are correct.

This is because you need to make sure the option "MAILTO" - Description "URL:Mailto" Is set to the correct Email Client. In this example if this was set to the Windows Mail App when you try and click in your browser to email someone it will load the mail app. If you are wanting to set it to load in outlook you will need to make sure when choosing outlooks defaults this is ticked.

I do not have Outlook installed on the computer i am doing the screenshots on but what you need to make sure is set to the correctly will be shown below.

Click Save, click ok.

Hope this helps,

Harry

I installed a newer modem for a friend and now he is unable to sign in to AOL via AOL Desktop. The sign in screen shows "connected" but not "signed on." When I try to sign on for him, to log into the AOL account, it goes to an error code. His Internet provider has not changed and his broadband connection didn't change either--only the modem itself. I didn't change any settings and of course, his Internet access is always ON and works fine with any browser. I thought uninstalling and reinstalling the AOL desktop would solve the problem, but it did not. The same thing happened when I tried to sign in.

Via Chrome, or any other browser, I can access AOL and sign in just fine. It is just a problem for him because he is not tech savvy and has been used to using the AOL Desktop and he knows nothing of using another browser to get to the Internet. I

If you have any ideas that will help, I will try them. Since I am the one who installed the new modem, I feel responsible to try and get things back "the way they were."
Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi,
I have a custom build desktop. One week ago it started to stop booting due to a missing file or corrupt file error on Windows XP. Yesterday when I decided to fix it via repair function of windows, I plugged the desktop to the outlet and press the power switch, It startedas normal ( fans started spinning, lights came on) and couple minutes later, It shut down itself andsmopkes came out of the power supply.

I unplugged the computer, from the outlet and removed the power supply unit from the case, I smelledlike cable burn and Ifigured that I fried my power supply some how.

I went to a computer store to replace my old power supply ( Turbolink Switching Powersupply Model: LC-A350ATX) with Antec BP 350. I installed the new power supply and pressed the power switch the fans and lights came on again but one minute later it shut down itself and since that time whenever I want to start it, It doesn't do anything at all. No fan spins, no lights.

I removed all the cables from other devices. I checked the connections of motherboard, no sign of burn mark on motherboard. But still no nothing.

What else can I do to figure out the problem?

Thank you for your help. I appreciate it.

A:No sign of any power on desktop

When a power supply goes up in smoke, it usually takes other parts with it. Unfortunately, without replacing or testing each part one at a time, there's no easy way to tell.

The fastest solution would be to bring the whoel PC down to a local repair shop to have them test it.

After I sign into windows, I have a black screen and the My documents folder opens.  No right click ability, no desktop, no start menu, but I can navigate, etc.

I've tried several options but none have worked so far.
Here's what I've tried

-Restore to earlier point (no restore points were found due to no memory being allotted. That has been changed)
-Created new user, instead of a black screen, it gets a blue one, but still my documents opens, and have to navigate that way
-Looked through the regedit in order to change  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell as seen on other forums. I have no winlogon in the currentversion section.
-Tried to run my avira virus scan, but avira doesn't work now.. might be some connection
-Ran malwarebytes and superantispyware at different times. Both found objects, mostly were cookies, but some were files/exe/reg.  I will include the malwarebytes scan log at the end of this.
-Other fix I've seen was to reinstall windows with the CD but I have no clue where my CD is if I even got one.

So, prior to this happening, my computer quit connecting to my home network while other devices could connect. Went a whole day like that, then I restarted the computer to see if that would fix anything, and thats when the black screen started happening. Took it too school and was able to connect on their wifi, brought it home and its now connected to the home inter... Read more

I wonder whether Windows has gone into limited mode because there is a problem with your license?  In this case doing a repair install from your original media is the best answer.  If you don't have one they are easy to find, unless you have an OEM version of Windows for only, say, HP computers-- then you would need one of those which HP would send you free.

Of course if you unknowing bought a system with an unauthorized copy of Windows, expect more trouble, especially if the seller is no longer around.  It would certainly be worth talking to him if you could.

If you must have a computer on an emergency basis, load up a live version of Linux, which runs from CD or DVD without interfering with Windows.  Save your work to a thumb drive before shutting down unless that Linux let you create persistent storage.  One Linux I know is very good for this is Puppy Linux.

Best,

While showing its age a bit , it still works well, until it would artifact and go black.

Inspecting the TIM and thermal pads I saw or thought it was a heat issue due to that are as old as the dead sea scrolls.

Purchased some fujipoly pads for Memory, 1.5m and for VRM (same), replaced them and the TIM [AS5]on GPU.

So, booted up into windows 10 1607 and after 10 min temps soared display went black.

Replaced with an old ATI X1950 pro with Microsoft basic display driver. (it works at resolutions that can be seen from the ISS). Plus no legacy drivers work with it anymore.

Any suggestions, will re-seat H/S/F later tonight, hope it works.......

Hello and be patient with me. This is my first.

Computer A running Windows 7 Professional.. Desktop to be connected to from Home
Computer B running Windows 7 Home and Office..Laptop wanting to connect to Computer A

I would like to say I have configured it correctly as I have done this in the past, but obviously not
or I would not be seeking help.

Anyway, The Remote Desktop on the laptop will allow me to connect with my password and BLANK password. I have that checked the registry to make sure the requires password is enbled. It allows me connect to a desktop remote screen but rejects both my password and the blank. This remote desktop does not reflect the user Picture Icon.

I have created the port forwarding to 3391 in my router. Went into registry on computer A and changed the port setting to reflect port 3391. I have tried the setup both as computer running any version and NAT Authentication.

A:Remote Desktop Allow sign on but rejects password

With internet explorer I can do the control T command and pin a website tile to my start menu. What I like is each tile will have a logo from the website instead of just the e. It seems like with Edge we cannot do this, pretty boring tiles. Is there a way to pin a website tile to the start menu that shows the website or company logo instead of just the e/

Also, is it true we will no longer be able to use explorer? There are still issues with edge so hope this is not true, or at least something that will happen years down the line.

I am having all kinds of problems with windows sign ins. Initially could not sign in with Groove, then it seemed to work fine but cannot play solitaire as the xbox live does not want to sign in. This happens all the time, one day it all works fine then several days later I have problems.

I am also having a problem with Adobe Bridge. Whenever I try to go to camera raw I get a solid yellow block with a blue background and no image. Again it worked fine when I first bought my computer but now I am having issues. I updated my Nvidia driver and I suspect this is causing the problem.

I just bought a new Dell XPX15 laptop but this may be my last windows machine, it just seems like too many problems with Microsoft. I am just more than a little frustrated right now.

A:sign in problems and edge question

Internet Explorer is going the way of the Dodo bird. Microsoft wants everyone to use Edge. People are starting to use Fire Fox & Chrome more, because there are things that you cannot use with a tablet browser.

When I first setup my PC I used my MS account to login. The account name was an email address from cox.net. However shortly thereafter I changed to a local account. A few months ago I changed the account name to a Gmail address in anticipation of changing my internet provider but I've continued using a local account to login to windows, I've never used the Gmail login name.

Today I wanted to look at the extensions that were available for Edge, so I needed to sign into the Store but the login box was prepopulated with the old account name from cox.net. I assume that I should go to setting, select Email & App Accounts and select the add an account button and add the MS account that uses my Gmail name, correct?

After I do then then how can a delete the old, inactive account with the cox.net user name?

I think my error is confusing the account name which may or may not be an email address with the actual email address used for communication about the account, correct?

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Microsoft Account Sign In Question

Hello SoFine409,

You should be able to add the Gmail address as an alias to your Microsoft account.

Microsoft Account Aliases - Add or Remove

Afterwards, make the Gmail address your primary alias.

Microsoft Account Aliases - Change Primary Alias

You can then remove your Cox address as an alias if you like.

Hey all, my name is Alex, and I have a problem with my desktop and my screen saver. My desktop has been taken over by a bright blue and yellow warning sign that says my computer has been taken over by spyware and I need to download a removal tool to clean my computer. My screen saver turns into another warning sign that says windowsXP requires a reboot. It then proceeds to fake a system reboot, and then brings up a screen filled with fake registry entries and the like. Usually it says something like "BOGUS_DRIVER" at the top.

I went through your steps to try to fix the problem myself, and even ventured to the self help section and used SmitFraudFix, PandaScan, and HackThis tools to scan and get logs for you all to look at. Would you like me to post them?

However, everytime that I start my computer from my morning bootup, the Signon Window has the deleted User, Nathon.
I have to type in Jack, for the new user, and I get into Jacks Account.

Why is Windows not remembering that I have deleted the USER, Nathon?

You have recently removed one or more virusus from this computer, but now a new one has appeared.

First, AOL is extremely slow to start when I click on the icon. Once I've signed on, after a time a new sign-on screen appears on top of what I'm doing. I cancel that one. Soon I see activity at the bottom of the screen (where ordinarily you see "Done" or "//http:/..." etc. The virus is doing its own AOL activity! Soon afterward AOL is canceled, as if I had canceled it.

Also, Microsoft XP suddenly announces they are having to increase my virtual memory. Paging size is currently at 384 Mb, and my RAM is 1.25 GB. This is happening more and more frequently.

I have again changed my AOL sign-on password, and I no longer permit it to use the password automatically (I have to enter it at each sign on).

Thanks for any help you can provide.

After having done the update, I'm having two issues that are bugging me:

1. I cannot change the lock screen from the "cave by the shore" default nor bypass it (Brink is working on the bypass issue I believe)

2. If I go into netplwiz and uncheck the need for a password, the "Welcome" screen has the system default user picture, that drawing of a circle over an arch, not the picture I assigned to the account. With the need for a password, the picture on both the sign-in screen and "Welcome" screen is correct tho.

The lock screen issue I can live with since I normally don't use a password, but the default user picture is bugging me. I went into %ProgramData%\Microsoft\User Account Pictures and replaced all the default pictures with ones the same name and size of the picture that I have for the account, but it still shows the default.

I've searched around for another place where the default picture is, but cannot find any, even with the search including hidden system files.

Anybody know where the system default user pictures are stored, other than in the User Account Pictures?

Q1) I've added OPTION THREE in the tutorial below to be able to disable the lock screen again, but it doesn't do so at startup.

Q2) I'm not aware of way to stop this yet when you have netplwiz set to automatically sign in to an account at startup. The blue note box at the top of the tutorial below will show you the default locations for account pictures to help.

So I just reinstalled Windows 10 on my machine.

Before I had it set up so that I could log in with a password or fingerprint.

Now it seems my only options are (1) password only OR (2) password, PIN or fingerprint.

I don't want PIN as a sign in option. But I have to enable PIN via "Windows Hello" before enabling Fingerprint sign in.

And once I have fingerprint sign in enabled, if I remove the PIN I lose both PIN and fingerprint sign in options.

Any ideas how I can set up password and fingerprint as my only two sign in options?

Hey everyone

Every now and then my Windows 8.1 x64 shows the first sign-in sequence after a restart. I noticed it most recently happened after a normal Start->Power Options->Restart. I'm quite sure it has also happened after right clicking on start button (Control-X) and restarting from there, as well as from a custom shortcut I have for restart (shutdown.exe /r /t 00).

I had just finished installing IBM SPSS 22 for a class I'm taking, but I think this is unrelated.
It goes through the whole "Setting Up Your PC" and "Installing your apps" screens even though its perfectly fine and and all my data including app data is still there. See the attached file for an example of what was most noticeably shown.

With another incident, something similar to this happened but it actually reset some of my settings for things like MediaMonkey, Connectify Hotspot, GOM Player and VLC player. It was like they had been started for the first time ever with no license information or preferences like Always on Top.

Its not a matter of urgency but I keep worrying that one day it will actually mess with my system in a very annoying way.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
Thanks

Windows 7 sp1 RTM: Logon, Desktop Sidebar & Windows Live Sign in Assitant Issues (unknown minnor issues-if you face the same issues, please post it here)

Hi Guys , please read the clarification before going to the issues part.

Clarification :
I faced a few issues after installing the Windows 7 sp1 RTM. I am very sure (100%) that these are the Windows 7 sp1 RTM fault (already gone through a few discussions and tested by myself on various ways).

There is no problem with IE9 RTM as these problems were also existing when I used IE8 (Original file came with my Windows 7 pack).

I am certain that my Windows Live Sign In Assitant has no problem at all (tested with latest Windows Live Essential 2011 pack-the one with minor update).

Everything works properly prior/before of the installation of Windows 7 sp1 RTM (of course by reverting back the Windows 7 sp1 RTM to Windows 7 will solve everything).

The point is I want the solution for Windows 7 sp1 RTM. Hope you can help. Kindly view my issues below.

I have hp pavilion g6-2249 wm notebook. My laptop is 4 months old. Two days ago when I started my
pc, the welcome page opens and then I sign in. Everything is ok on the apps page that immediately opens.
If I click the desktop app icon, it goes to the desktop and the entire page starts to flash, it shows the desktop
for 2 seconds and then then flashes to blue for 5 seconds and back and forth, etc.

The desktop will not stay open long enough for me to do anything. I cannot get it to start in safe mode. I clicked
F8 repeatedly on start up but nothing happens. I used the esc on startup and ran every test offered except BIOS.
I don't know what to do with that so I didn't mess with it. All tests were ok.

If I go back to the app page from the flashing desktop, the app page and charms start flashing also. I can't even
shut down properly then. Norton 360 runs in the background all the time but I can't get to it to do a scan. I
can't get to any file. The only way to get online is to turn off pc and turn on later. App page does not flash at
that time. I go to search and click on Explorer and I can go to my homepage. If I click on required addons then
the background starts flashing and I have to reset my cursor every two letter that I type. I am going crazy.
Can someone help me???
Thanks

A:Desktop Page Flashing

If you can do this, you can get to Safe Mode:

Windows key + C.
Settings
Power
Hold shift key and click RESTART.
then you have all the options.

Click on Advanced Options then Startup Settings.
Click Restart and you have almost the full advanced Boot Options menu like XP, Vista or Win 7.

In 7 they have that icon, but it is VERY small and sorrounded by a white web page look. All of my web shortcuts have this same look minus w/e is in the middle and as a result I can not tell the difference between the links. Any way to get the old XP logos back?

Hi guys,

Since going to windows 7 I am having trouble using the page up, page down, and the arrow keys to navigate web pages.

The only key that somewhat works is the " page down " key but when I use it, instead of just moving the screen up to the to the last line displayed on the screen, It takes me ALL the way down to the last page.

How do I correct this ?

Many Thanks,

Hello,

This is my first time posting a question any time any where so please bare with me.

I am running my computer with windows XP. I cannot get it to get past the main page (desktop) when I go down to the task bar where it says START i get an hour glass. I cannot click on any of my desk top Icons and have them do anything and I cannot go into the start menu. I have tried control, shift, escape to see if I can run off a cd this could be of help if a cd is needed to fix the problem. I did try to boot the computer off of a disk thinking perhaps I had a virus (I still think that might be the problem) but I was unable to do this. I reset the boot to start from disk and when it started in dos and gave me my 4 choices I chose boot from disk then it said press f1 or f2 to continue. I pressed F1. when I had the Norton anti-virus disk in there it gave me the choice for normal startup or start up from disk. I tried to choose start up from disk but it wouldn't let me. I tried this several times with 2 different versions all with the same result. My 30 seconds ran out and it started up normally and then got stuck on the desk top page. I tried the same boot with the windows XP disk hoping that it might have a diagnostic bit to it, but no luck I chose boot form disk and it still went to the desk top page and got stuck. Anyone with any information or suggestions on what I might do would be greatly appreciated. I would hate to think that I will have to take it in somewhere only to ha... Read more

I post on message boards. I know that many posters occasionally check IP numbers in order to try to determine who is posting. If I click on one of my own messages I can then go to "page source" under "View",and can scroll down and see my online IP number. My question is about the information that comes immediately after the IP number. In my case it says :
<!-- RAGNT Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.8.1.9) Gecko/20071025 Firefox/2.0.0.9 RCHAR ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7 RAC text/xml,application/xml,application/xhtml+xml,text/html;q=0.9,text/plain;q=0.8,image/png,*/*;q=0.5 RLANG en-us,en;q=0.5 -->
<!-- end -->
Can someone either tell me what all that information means or tell me a site that explains (simply) what it all means? Does it identify the computer on which I am posting?

Thanks

I have had many people tell me that to get the best performance from Windows you need to set the Page File size manually. I have heard that a size of 2.5 and 3.0 times installed RAM is the right size.

My question, and maybe I am over analysising here, is on a computer with integrated graphics should I subtract out the amount of RAM that is siphoned off of main RAM to support the onboard video before I make my Page File size calculations?

Googling this gets a million answers of course (all seemingly disagreeing!). However...

My PC has two 500GB Samsung EVO 850 SSDs. No other hard drives, apart form numerous larger external HDDs for backups etc. It is used just for gaming - MS Flight Simulator - and I don't need more space than that. (It is also linked on my home network to two other PCs which have a lot of storage space...).

I used to set the page file to 1GB min and max size on my C drive. However, I was getting OoM errors in Flight Simulator. With Win7 x64, 16GBs RAM, and plenty of available disc space showing, the message "Your computer has run out of memory. Flight Simulator will now close" was very unexpected (not to mention 'unwelcome'!) and clearly not accurate! My FS9.exe file is patched to '4GBs', for those who are aware of this sort of thing.

As part of the troubleshooting, I let Windows manage my page file instead, which means I have a 16GB file now. A bit silly, when, according to my desktop 'widget' it is hardly ever touched. So far, no more OoM errors and FS shutdowns, though it's early days - I only made the change a couple of days ago.

My question: What I'd like to know is whether letting Windows manage the page file on the SSD is a good idea. Obviously the fragmentation is not an issue, but what are the advantages and disadvantages of allowing a system managed file on an SSD (or even on a standard HDD)? Wear and tear? (Seems that the old idea of fixing the same min and max size i... Read more

I am using Front Page 2000 in Windows XP. When I create an htm file out of a word file and then import it to front page, it always double spaces the text instead of single spacing it. Is there a way to get around this? Even when you try to delete the extra space, it won't let you.

Thanks for the help.

theolddog

A:Front Page Question

Try this, old dog.

Paste into FP.
Select the entire text you pasted.
Hit Format-Paragraph.

In space before and after, put 0.
If that's too much, undo and try 6.

Word has paragraph spacing, but by default, it's 0 and 0.

FrontPage, as with all HTML, has more space between paragraphs.

If you want Word's stuff to behave when paste, use Shift+Enter instead of Enter when you start a new paragraph. Unfortunately, if you Shift+Enter in Word, you won't get a new bullet and such, so it's no fun really.

Synopsis: Do the dirty workaround or start building in FP.

Experience: I just (about an hour ago) did about 2 pages with stupid bullets and such from Word to FP for a client.

My (gaming) PC has two 500GB SSDs, and no HDDs. The first SSD has two partitions, the first, smaller one (80GBs), being the C Drive for the O/S. The second SSD also has one smaller partition and one large.

As I have 16GBs of RAM - and I find that leaving Windows to manage the page file (rather than set minimum and maximum sizes, or tinker with it in any other way, as I always used to, once upon a time) gives the best, stutter-free performance results - I obviously as a consequence have 16GBs of space used up on my C drive for the page file: as the Windows partition is getting fuller, I'd like to reclaim this...

Is there any reason why I shouldn't leave just a small page file on the C-Drive and set up the system managed page file (so, 16GBs) on the 2nd. (large) partition of the 2nd SSD (where there's loads of room)? I am presuming that, being SSDs, the location of the page file isn't important from a performance point of view. Or would that somehow interfere with (and make pointless) having Windows managing the page file, if I have set it up on a partition other than the one with the O/S in it?

I know I could just reduce the page file to 1GB, or whatever, but as I say, it seems to me that I get the best gaming performance with the page file left for Windows to manage...

I do not have a hibernation file, for obvious reasons...
Thanks!

I've heard 2 different explanations regarding the page file and I'm wondering if someone could clarify this for me. One says: when physical memory is used up, pages of info start getting transferred to the page file. Second one says: that a full copy of whats stored in ram is maintained in the page file "all the time" and that information isn't "madly" transferred out of ram when it reaches its limit because it's already there. The information is just dropped out of ram. Which is correct? Thanks everyone!

A:Page file question

Both are partly true.

The pagefile is used to store infrequently accessed data, thus leaving more RAM for more important uses. This is an ongoing process and the system does not wait until RAM is full before beginning. The time required for copying data to disk is essentially free as other activities can take place while this is happening. Note that this is for infrequently accessed data only. If data is frequently accessed it will probably never be copied to the pagefile. Also note that the data is copied to the pagefile and the data remains in RAM. In the event that the RAM is needed for important purposes it can be immediately reused as the data is safely stored in the pagefile. If the data thus displaced from RAM is later needed it will be loaded from the pagefile.

The pagefile isn't normally used to store program code. There is no need to do this as there is already a perfectly good copy available in the original files they were loaded from.

The guiding principle behind all of this is too keep frequently accessed data and code in RAM, with the remainder in the pagefile or executable files files. The memory manager also strives for full memory utilization all the time. Free memory is wasted memory.

I created a web page in photoshop where I could play around with the designs and now I'm wanting to put all the individual elements into frontpage to actually build the page. The pictures looked real nice in photoshop with a shadow but I can't seem to figure out how to make this image have the shadow when I insert it to a webpage.

Is that even possible?

Also, a related question about page size. Should I make my background image 800x600 or 1024x768? What is the most common browser window setting? How can I make the size so that it will look right on almost everyone's browser?

If I make it 1024x768 and someone has their browser at 800x600, the whole page is going to look wierd.

A:Question About pictures on a Web Page

Well vanilla web pages just display images from bitmaps so you have to incorporate the shadow effect into the image bitmap somehow by eg using paintshop. Re the size - if you really want to get the right size of image you should check the browser settings with script at the start of the page then set the image size or load the appropriate image using the script to generate the HTML on the fly. I would tend to use javascript, always remembering that the browser may have scripting disabled. Below is a simple script you can add to the head of your page. Note that it may be word-wrapped by the TSG page. Also note that the scrollbars can effect the window size.
?=Tag starters removed so that script is displayed.
?script language=javascript>
?!-- //screen size detection script for ver 4 upwards browsers
var w, h

w = window.screen.width;
h = window.screen.height;

document.writeln ("Your PC is set to a screen size of " + w + " x " + h + ".");
//you could set your image size etc here.
}
else if (h < 700)
