Accidental merge of Downloads folder and Documents folder

Q: Accidental merge of Downloads folder and Documents folder

I cannot unmerge them!

I would like to avoid system restore or adding a new profile if possible.

right clicking and changing the location doesn't work because they are both changed by that approach

The icons appear unique but they are both titled "Downloads" at the moment

I had initially thought to save space on my ssd by having the folders point to an external drive. i then added a 2nd internal drive and decided to return the 2 folders to their original location.
(Both folders where titled E:/ as i had foolishly redirected them both to the same location)
when i right clicked on the downloads folder and changed its default location back to normal, then both folders changed. all my downloads and documents are intact, they are just duplicated. both folders have documents and downloads.

i have tried various regedit solutions from this site to no avail.

Good afternoon,
I use exchange online a lot (OWA) and a few days ago Internet Explorer started defaulting to OneDrive Documents Folder instead of my local Documents folder. It was running fine before that. Not sure what changed. I have since changed
settings in OneDrive to save locally instead of on OneDrive and even disabled OneDrive completely. However, every time I try to add an attachment from Internet Explorer, it defaults to my OneDrive folder and not my local folder. Anyone know of a fix? Yes,
I know I could just use a different folder and copy from my Documents folder to the new folder, but there's obviously an issue that I would like to fix. Thank you all for your help.

Q1. When I look at the folders in C:\Users\User-Name , I can see a [My Documents] folder. I double click on [My Documents] and the location now is C:\Users\User-Name\Documents , why is the folder name different from the exact folder location? (I notice all other folders that have the word "My" has the same situation)

Q3. I intend to follow this article User Folders - Change Default Location to move My Documents folder, in the article it says
"OPTION TWO 3. Create a New Folder by right clicking or press and hold on a empty space in the main window there, and click/tap on New and Folder. Name the new folder without spaces (ex: "Music" for My Music) for the user folder that you want to move there. (See screenshots below) NOTE: The name that you type in for the new folder will be what you see as the user folder name in the Start Menu (shell:UsersFilesFolder) location when finished with all of these steps. It would be best to use the same name as the user folder to avoid confusion."
"OPTION TWO 8. Navigate to the same location as in step 2 and 3 above, then select the renamed new folder (ex: Music), and click/tap on the Select Folder button. (See screenshot below)"

A:Why User folder shows My Documents but folder location is Documents?

Hello pcwin,

The user folders that have "My" in the name are not actually named with the "My".

These are symbolic links, so when you name the folder "Documents", it will automatically rename and display as "My Documents", but in reality is still "Documents".

It can be a bit confusing.

Hi there,
Thanks for letting me join.
I have a new issue on my laptop running Windows 7 that I seem to have a new folder called Desktop in my Downloads folder; not sure how that happened.
when I double click on the new Desktop folder, it opens to show all the files and programs I have on my actual desktop.

Can I delete this folder?
I'm a bit scared to do that without hearing from the experts first.
I really don't want to mess up my computer.

Can anyone help with that?

Im running windows 10 and Ive been having lots of issues with one drive so I decided to unlink it to my pc and turn it off completely.
The documents folder in 'this pc' no longer works now as the folder path goes to one drive. is there a way of fixing this?
Also the documents folder is missing from from 'the folder with my user name' (the one with all the lovely icons). When I try to create a new folder and call it documents, an error shows that I cant have two folders with the same name. I therefore thought that the folder may have been hidden so I set show hidden files and it showed me a my documents folder that was faded out and I cant do anything with that. no idea what that means.
The only place in which the documents folder still exists is in my user account?s folder in the c drive and library.
Can anyone help with this issue?

I am really perplexed as to what is going on with a Documents folder. It's not MY DOCUMENTS, but rather, the Libraries-Documents folder (versus the my documents under my user profile/name).

The folder is FULL of garbage. This includes things that appear to be "temp files" (but with valid file types such as jpg, mp3)...also in there doc files, png, tdb, diz, ebc, and others I don't even recognize. Some of these things include package files from the Sims series games (there were a TON of them in there) and others included pictures that I did NOT save locally (as if it were a temp file from the web). There are even many duplicates of some of these pictures. Some I *DID* save as part of a genealogy project, but I didn't save them there....I saved them in a completely different folder with a completely different name.

Needless to say, I've got a LOT of work ahead of me cleaning this sucker out (thousands of files to the tune of 16.5gigs...seriously).

How are these files getting here and how can I prevent it from happening again?

Thanks in advance!

Okay, here's the rundown as best as I can remember it...

Several years ago (around 10, if I'm approximating), I purchased a slew of components and built my first computer from scratch. Since that time I have run through four power supplies. It seems as though some other component is causing these power supply failures. This is not the purpose of this post, however (but some back story).

Now, I am not the most technically savvy person in the world, and after the second failure, I took the computer to a "professional". While I don't know what he did in its entirety, I did notice a change that confused me. However, as I had decided to be an end user from this point forward and not a techie person, I didn't question it. The change... I could access the user account "Documents" folder from the "My Computer" window but not from within the "Documents and Settings" folder under the root directory.

In other words, if I were to double-click the "My Computer" icon, I would be given the usual options of hard disk drives and CD drives as well as the "Shared Documents" folder and the "_Username_ Documents" folder for the user logged in. (That would by Ahr Neely's Documents for the Ahr Neely user, and as there was only every one user created on the computer it was the only documents folder that should have existed.)

However, if I were to, from the "My Computer" window, open the C:\ d... Read more

Prior to a few weeks back where I made added a function to the folder file type, it didn't matter if I doubled clicked on a file folder on either the left hand pane or the right hand pane of Windows Explorer, Folder View. Either way opened the folder and displayed in the contents in the right hand pane.

Since I made the change below however, if I click on a folder in the left hand "Folders" pane, it works as before and opens the folder and displayed in the contents in the right hand pane.

However, if I click on any folders in the right hand (files pane) a new windows explorer window opens a displays the "my documents".

This is driving me nuts. The same thing happens if you click on a shortcut to a folder. Instead of the folder opening, it opens a new window and displays "my documents".

This problems started when I added a new function to the folder file folder file type properties to print out the contents of a folder by calling a batch file that piped the content to a file.

In the file association for file folders in the advanced section I now have three functions
- the afore mentioned 'create file list'
- explore (the default), and
- find

For the folder file type I just have:
- explore and
- open

Any suggestions on how to put things back to the way Windows Explorer always worked before make clicking folders in the right hand pane open them up properly in the same window as per clicking them on the left hand pane?

Hello guys,

I have a rather strange problem. Lately I've been seing that I have a double refference of my "Downloads" folder in my user folder. You can see that effect on my attached picture:

They appear double though and lead to the same location (when right clicking and going to the position tab). When you open them of course they are one and the same. When you delete them... well... they both are deleted! (carefull there). I even tried to reallocate one of them and erase the other, but they both are moved. It looks as if one is the ghost of the other!

It's not a big problem of course but It pisses me off! Isn't there a way to make the downloads folder link single again? I guess I should look somewhere in the registry but don't know where to look. Any help would be hot.

I set this Windows 7 computer up wrong more than a year ago and have just lived with it, but I am wanting to use an online backup service, and want my files to be in a standard place just in case.

When I moved my files from my previous computer, the first thing I did was create a separate partition on my new computer, drive "R." I meant to then put everything in the "Documents" folder and locate it on the "R" partition (I had it set up this way on the previous computer, using Vista).

Somehow I got befuddled and they all went in the "Contacts" folder (correctly located on "R" but incorrectly identified). I think when I moved them from the default location on the "C" drive to the new partition on "R," I must have gotten trigger happy and hit the wrong folder button or something, I don't quite remember.

Fixing it is not as simple as using the "Location" tab in the "Properties" dialog for "Contacts." I want to leave all my folders on the "R" drive, I just want them to be in "Documents" not "Contacts."

I'm afraid if I simply rename "Contacts" to "Documents" or move them manually that will break all links to programs (big and small, such as Word, Dropbox, iTunes, etc.)

I recent tried reorganizing pictures on my external hard drive. Over time many of the folders became duplicated and took up a lot of space. I was organizing the entirety of the collection in the hopes of burning backups. I was copying and pasting entire folders together with the "Replace" command and the check box for do this for the next # of conflicts. That worked fine, but then I saw I could cut out a few steps by allowing windows to merge the folders which in most cases were exact duplicates.

I started to let Vista MERGE the files, and I suddenly was left with image files that couldn't be opened. The file size shows me that the images are still there as does the "Date modifed" though the "picture taken" info is gone when I mouse over the file. In a very few cases partial images show, but I can't open most of them. It tells me either "Invalid image" or Windows couldn't open.

OK guys, I have 2 Hard drives, both drives contain the same folders but with different files in each folder.

What I need to do is combine the contents of both drives somehow without physically merging the files on those drives so that they can be backed up to a single location on one of my NAS.

I use Beyond Compare to do my backups but when I attempt to do what I want, the folder sync operation wants to delete the files from one drive or the other, depending on which drive is selected at the time. I can set up file ignore rules, but there is just too damn many files to deal with. I have similar issues with other backup software also.

Drive D: ------> Single Folder On NAS 2
Drive E: -^

Drive D: ------> NAS 1

The files on Drive D: are uploaded to two different NAS's one of which is full. So no files can be added to D: and therefore any additional files are added to Drive E:. The files on Drive E: are uploaded to only one NAS which has room to spare.

Anyone have any suggestions?

A:Difficult folder merge - need ideas

As I understand the question, I just create 2 Folders on my NAS, open a second copy of Windows Explorer, set them side by side, go the Folder to be copied and drag it to the first WE window. One of the reasons I do it that way is that it's much faster later to move files from one Folder to another Folder on the same drive as desired and the other is to run a duplicate checking program on them which seems to be always faster than checking one HDD against another. I do have to be careful with the drag and drop that I get the right target.

My friend (we'll call him David) created for some sick and twisted purpose a folder path that contained 107 (no joke) folders within folders, something in the order of, "C:\folder\folder\folder\folder\..." David is now unable to delete the folder directory. When he tried to delete it, it says "Are you sure you want to move the folder and all its contents to the recycle bin? (yes, yes to all, or no)." He clicks "yes to all" or "yes", and it says, "The folder contains items who's name is too long for the recycle bin. Do you want to permanently delete it?" He clicks "yes" or "yes to all" again and it says, "Cannot delete z: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and filename."

Anyhow, does anybody know how to delete this file? Any assistance would be greatly apreciated.

First, please forgive me if I have overlooked this issue in the many searches I have performed thus far.

I would like to know if anyone has a way to change all folder icons within a single folder to one specific icon without performing each one individually. I have over 1,400 folders within a master folder of which I would like to change the child folder icons. I really don't wish to perform this on a folder-by-folder basis.
This is not a Default Folder Icon Change inquiry. This is simply all child folders within a single master folder. I would also be interested if the change would affect all folders of a specific type. Windows 7 does allow the 'setup' of a folder to be distributed (details view with selected details, order, and column size for example) but the icon did not distribute as well.

Any suggestions?

A:Bulk Change All Folder Icons in Single Folder or Folder Type

First, a little bit of theory. What happens when a person sets a custom icon for a folder in Windows 7?
1. Attributes of a Folder change to Read-only (of the folder, NOT content!).
2. A hidden system file created inside that folder, which contains a link to the icon.

Thus, having such file as model, it is possible simply copy it across desired folders, and change attributes of those folders correspondingly.

Secondly, having this idea in my mind, I have put all of my little knowledge of Batch files together and created a script.
BEFORE script is started the following is needed to be done:
Master folder needs to be selected and a custom icon applied to it.

1. Script is placed inside that master folder and launched.
2. First, script checks if hidden system file with custom icon settings is there.
3. Secondly, script looks for subfolders and start changing its attributes.
4. Thirdly, script copies this settings file to all subfolders of current master folder, including all levels of subfolders.

For 100 folders it took about 21 seconds, for 200 folders with different levels of subfolders it took about 57 seconds on my laptop.

I have included remarks (comments) in the source code for better understanding what is going on.

UPDATE: Original file deleted. Script was not meant to be applied to system folders.
Please check a newer FIXED version at this post.

I've looked inside my "Dropbox" folder for the "Downloads" folder but its not there

Is there a settinng for "restore favorite links" so I get the downloads folder and not the picture folder?

ps. the "Downloads" folder under my user name in the "Users" folder does not appear in my "Favorites" when I click on "restore favorite links" and instead "My Pictures" shows up there buts its named "Downloads"

Thanks a Million !

A:Downloads" folder in the "Users" folder does not appear in Favorites

Hello r cam, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to restore the default folders and their default locations.User Folders - Restore Default Location
You might consider this below instead to be able to access the files from your libraries with the files actually located where you like. This way you will not have to worry about any potential issues, as you found out the hard way, that could happen when moving user folder locations. Create a new folder at any location you want.
Move any files you want into the new folder.
Include the new folder into a library of your choice.
If you like, you can also set the new folder to be the default "save" to location for the library as well.
Hope this helps,

Was just doing a search for a file on my PC when I seen that I have lots and lots of zip or cab files and some other files in the C:\downloads folder and they are all dated 12/12/05 and the same time is on them. Seen the they are a IE update.
Never had anything in that folder before but i do see a "This folder is safe to delete.txt" file that says this...

This folder contains the information needed to install Internet Explorer 6.
Once Internet Explorer 6 is installed and functioning properly on your system, you may delete this folder to free up disk space.
If you delete this folder but later want to reinstall the product, you will need to download it again from the web site.

So can I delete the folder or just what is in it?
What are these files there for if IE is already installed and working?
I only use IE for MS updates so guess it is functioning properly or the best that IE can for being IE.

my os is vista home premium 64 problem is a few years ago, i set up an excel folder and everything was fine with that, but recently i noticed i now have 2 download folders, one within the excel folder and the other is the standard windows download folder.  after i noticed i had 2 download folders, i saw when i download an item it goes into the excel\download folder and when i check the microsoft download folder the file is in c:\users\.....\excel documents\downloads.  i seems every download i do duplicates and goes into both folders.  finally, i think, when i start a download and i change the address from 'excel documents\downloads' to 'downloads', it changes back to excel documents before the download finishes.
if it's determined all downloads are in fact in both places,  can i delete the excel documents\download folder?  if so, will i be breaking the path, if so, is there a way to correct the path for all items at the same time....or what to do?

A:Issues with downloads folder

There is no way to give you sensible advice without knowing your Operating System and just what kind of downloads you are referring to.

The best guess at the moment is you have Win 7 of some variety and the downloads are microsoft updates for the OS or updates for common applications such as Java. If this guess is not correct, then let us know. It would help if you give an exact filename of one of these downloads. For example avg_free_stb_all_9_114_cnet.exe or IEDevToolBarSe...msi

Hello people... here is my problem:
Since last Friday my Downloads folder has been dead. What happens is I can not download any photo from any attachements. Also I can not 'Save As' any pic from the Internet to my computer. No error messages on Firefox, just does not save.

I already ran System File Check (SFC) tool that is supposed to repair what's broken, no luck ... did not repair.

When I click on the Download button from attachments it shows me a file in the Downloads folder but when I click Save nothing happens. I used to be able to click on file in the DL window and open it. I don't even have this option any more. I changed downloading to the 2 different places and tried those... no difference.

The only place I can save pics to my computer from is my provider's ATT 'main' e-mail. Web e-mails Yahoo and Gmail do not work.
So frustrating!

I use Windows 7, M/Firefox v.18 browser.

Any suggestions, tips on how to repair the Download folder and be able to save pictures on my puter would be greatly appreciated. Obviously I can not download a new Java version that I need to have.

Thanks a million in advance.

Don't use IE but isn't there a download option to always save files to a location?

Also, you can just use a download manager like FDM. That way all your downloads are in one folder without any browsing through folders when you click download or you can group them accordingly or do whatever you like with them.

My Downloads Folder has a lot in it, using up memory.  Most of it is SetUp files, etc.  Often anonymous because that is  usually all they are called  ---- Setup.  Is it a good idea to delete (most) of these to save memory, especially on small machines like my Tablet, or is there an important reason for keeping them?  If one needed to install a program again it should be easy to do it from the interne (which also makes sure it is the latest version).

A:Clearing the Downloads Folder

Hi clayto To be honest, you should never keep anything in your Downloads folder. If you need to keep something you downloaded, you should move it in an appropriate folder, like Documents, Music, Videos, Pictures, Desktop, etc. If you downloaded a document only to see it once, you should delete it right after. It's safe to delete everything you have in Downloads that you downloaded if you don't need these files anymore. If you need the installation file for a program, I would redownload it to make sure that I have the latest installer anyway.

I moved the "My Documents" folder to partition D.
(What a mistake though!)
Instead of moving the whole thing as a single folder, it moved it's CONTENTS!
Which means, when I click on D, I see the "CONTENTS of My Documents".
But, I expected to see a folder named "My Documents", and the rest of the drive D (which was luckily empty at the time).
Even worse, it seemed like D had actually transformed into My Documents.
Like, when I attempted to move the other My ... folders, I got a message: Are you sure to move a system folder into another system folder? It is irreversible, and they can not be separated.
(Which truth I had already witnessed with the previous move.)
It also seemed like a ghost of the My Documents folder still existed on the original location (C:\Users...). Like when I created a new folder and tried to name it "My Documents", a duplicate name message would appear.
I put it back with lots of difficulty, and would like to know how to accomplish this task.

Hi Nina and a very warm welcome to the Forum.
First off, don't panic. After a short while on this forum you will find that there is a solution to most problems.
First off when you got the message "Are you sure to move a system folder into another system folder?" that should have rung bells. The My Document (Re-named "Documents" in Windows 7) is not the same as was on Windows XP.
Other better brains than mine will come to the rescue here I am sure but meantime have you tried a System Restore? That's what I would do first. Please come back here if you need help with that.

Now when I go My documents from Start I go straight to H: . I created a documents folder in C: & transferred the docs back to that but now it doesn't appear in windows explorer i.e. C: Users/user name .
However when I do a search for 1 of the docs in the folder from search at start & 'open folder location' it goes to windows explorer as before .
What a mess !!
How do I get things back to as before ? I've just done a complete recovery so don't want all that hassle again .

A:Help!!! My 'My Documents' Folder is Gone

Two things to try, the first is to go start>search and type in the name of a file and let it scan to see if it can find the missing files (if it finds the one whose name you gave it, you will find the lot.

In the event that they have been deleted and search cannot locate them, go to and download and install the Recuva prog ( a tiny little prog and easy to work). Let it scan you C drive or whereever your files were and see if it can find and recover them.( In case it can find them, you should first create a new folder on, say, your desktop as Recuva will ask for a destination for any recovered files).
It will probably find dozens of files covering all sortd of things, you will have to trawl through the list it produces to select the ones you want.

I keep my data files just about anywhere except 'My Documents'. Some are in subfolders of the program that runs them. Others are in folders named 'Downloads', 'Business', 'Computer-related' 'Temp' and similar, on the C: drive. My photographs are on drives devoted solely to photograhs. I have no music or video. My email is stored on an Exchange server.

I have used this general structure through every change in Windows from 3.1 onwards. It works for me, and I like it. I have thousands of data files, many in an elaborate hierarchy of subfolders, and can't just hurl them into an undifferentiated Documents folder and hope to find them again. If I moved them to subfolders of Documents, I'd essentially be re-creating the already-existing folder structure of the C: drive, which seems to me a little crazy. And it would be one more click to open them (in my Windows Explorer replacement: I never open anything from the Start Menu). I've always thought it was OK to do as I've been doing, because a number of programs offer a choice of where to store data files.

But today I contacted tech support for a shareware notes program that I run (and whose data files I store in the program's folder under C:\Program Files (x86)\.....). He said:

"In Vista/Windows 7, etc, you are not supposed put any writable files under Program Files, or for that matter, in arbitrary folders in your windows drive......You should be keeping them with your other application documents, either in Documents f... Read more

A:Is it OK not to use Documents folder?

Now I have got my head around libries in W7 the need to store in the old "My Docs/video/picture" structure has gone.

I would just be careful that any software you use is configured to use you folders, and remember any changes to your folder structure will stop the original programme from saving there until you update it.

Hello to all,
This is more of a question than a problem. In my WindowsXP SP2 system, if I open Windows Explorer to look at all my folders for whatever the reason, I've noticed for quite a while that, quite normally, I have the usual My Documents folder containing everything I expect it to. In addition to that, if I expand the + sign on My Computer, it shows me all my local hard drives as it should, a Shared Folder and another folder titled Pete C.'s Documents which is essentially a carbon copy of the normal My Documents folder. I'm just assuming perhaps I may have inadvertently created it under whatever conditions prevailed at the time or something of that nature. Can I safely delete Pete C.'s Documents folder from under My Computer? My experience level somehow tells me I can but I'd like to get a second opinion.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Pete C.

Hi my daughter's Windows 7 computer isn't showing the Downloads folder where it should be, where it used to be.
I had done a backup on her computer awhile ago and if I go into the backup on the external harddrive the Downloads folder shows up there where it should be. So I thought I'd just copy and paste the folder and everything in it from the external harddrive to her computer back to where it's supposed to be, and as soon as I go to do that the computer gives me a message saying that this folder already exists and do you still want to merge it with the new one that you are copying and pasting. I clicked yes and then it went through all the files and folders that already existed and do I want to replace this file or not etc.

I went ahead and copied and replaced all the files and folders from the Downloaads Folder to her computer to where it should be and once I was finished I could still see no Downloads folder.

So what it appears to me is that the folder is there but isn't visible to me.

If anyone can help please let me know.

Today's nightmare is: I upgraded to 64 bit from a 32 bit machine months ago. Even though I have Tools/Options set to have downloads go directly to Program Files, I've discovered that my downloads are going to the old Program Files (x86) folder, e.g., I just download Secunia PSI and when opened in Program Files, the old version was there but the new version 3.0 is in PF (x86). I tried to cut and paste it to PF but it didn't work. I have a download Firefox extension, Download Status Bar, that I really like; it works great.
I know that some programs in 64 bit need the old 32 bit version trom PF (x86) to work but I'd like to delete PF (x86). Would that be OK?
Your ideas about why this is happening will be greatly appreciated. ec

A:Downloads going to old Prog Files x86 folder

Windows 7 x64 stores all 32 bit applications in Program file (x86). This is normal and the intended function of Program file (x86).
it is not a remnant of an old 32 bit version of Windows 7.

Hi guys,

I'm going nuts trying to share my downloads folder in Windows own DLNA server (Homegroup Media sharing/streaming). I can share libraries, but can't find a loophole to share Downloads on it.

I have some issues with third party apps like serviio (doesn't run most times), Plex, Samsung Link and others cause unnecessary heating and recourse consumption.

My best option is going through Windows, but it's an hassle to keep copying videos from downloads to videos back and forward.. Also, these actions take precious life out of my beloved and expensive Samsung 850 PRO SSD!

Can anyone help on this?

One time I accidentally put a shortcut of my downloads on my desktop, and then deleted it and it deleted my whole downloads folder. Fortunately, I had a backup and got everything back. But programs like Opera and Bittorrent think my downloads is on my desktop. Is there anyway I could change this?

A:Accidently deleted my downloads folder

Hello Craig,

Double check using the tutorial below to make sure that your C:\Users\(user-name)\Downloads folder is set to it's default location. It sounds like it may be set to the Desktop instead.

I have a paid AT&T email subscription. When Outlook downloads the email, the AT&T spam folder email is downloaded together with the Inbox email. AT&T "Support" insists it's a setting in Outlook that includes the Spam folder, but won't tell me what that setting is unless I pay them a monthly fee for "Other Software" support.

The only settings I see are for the POP address and the port, both of which the rep verified are correct. Does anyone know about some secret Outlook setting that he claims exists? Note that Outlook is not pulling the email from the Trash folder.

Thank you

Hey, everyone. For the past while (I'm not entirely sure how long), I've been seeing tons of CAB files in my Downloads folder. Most of them are titled something like "Mar2008_d3dx9_37_x64," which leads me to believe that they're drivers of some sort, but I have no idea where they've come from. There are dozens of them, to the point where I no longer use my Downloads folder because it's so much easier to find things when I put them on my Desktop. I've read that Vista doesn't really use CAB files anymore, but I'm hesitant to get rid of them for fear of something bad happening. Does anyone know where they came from/what I can or should do? Thanks a bunch.

I recently got a new laptops (MSI GS70) which has 2 storage drives, a 256gb SSD and a 1tb HDD. As I was new to this concept, I derped hard when I tried to move my "downloads" folder from my SSD (where my OS is installed) to my HDD; I copied it to D:/User. When I did this, instead of placing the "Downloads folder" inside of that directory, it turned that directory into the downloads folder. I was then able t successfully copy other folders to my HDD by placing them in D:/User/Documents, etc. How should I go about fixing this? When I try to do the 'Restore Default' option on my D:/ drive an error comes up saying: "Failed to build the list of regular subdirectories under "D:/System Volume Information". Access is denied."
Thank you

A:Downloads folder problem when moving from SSD to HDD

Just moving downloads folder is not going to change path to it. You have to point browser to that folder as default downloads folder.
For instance, I use Firefox for browsing and just have it set to E:/ Downloads folder that I made in advance. Something like that has to be set in all browser or other programs.

I accidently deleted my Downloads folder, and it moved to the Recycle Bin. I was about to restore it again, but I had to go do something for my brother. When I came back, I totally forgot about restoring it. I had to delete some of my files, and those files went into the recycle bin. I opened up the recycle bin and empty the Recycle Bin WITH my Downloads folder in there. How can I recover it? I have all of my Itunes songs in there, and now I can't listen to any songs :|
Please help. Thanks

A:I accidently deleted my Downloads folder...?

Hello Rebpiz,

You should be able to create a new Downloads folder in the same C:\Users\(user-name) location to restore that folder. If that doesn't help, then you could use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to restore it.
Personal User Folder - Restore Missing FolderIf you had system protection turned on, then you may be able to use Previous Versions to restore the folder and it's contents.

Hope this helps,

I have set my Downloads folder to be on a second drive. by right clicking Downloads folder then selecting properties/location/"new location which I changed to F" clicked yes to move all associated files.

it has been working for a few days now all well and good.
earlier I went to download a image and when I right clicked the image and selected save as, a window appears where your able to choose a destination. The destination I wanted was already there as usual which is "F/Downloads" what caught my attention was within that window it usually shows all the pictures that I have in my Downloads folder but only one of them was there. I clicked save and the image saved.
I navigated to my Downloads folder on my F drive and the image was not there. All the rest of the images I previously downloaded was, even the only one that showed up in the "save to destination window" not sure of the proper name.
I tried to download another picture and when I right clicked it and selected save as
the "save to destination" window opened and showed the same single image as before and also the 1 previous download picture. Scratching my head I double checked the destination, destination correct F/Downloads. I click save, and navigate my way to F/Downloads and neither of the two pictures are there.

On my F drive I only have 1 Downloads folder. So where are these pictures that are not showing up in the folder but yet showing up in the "save to destinati... Read more

I turned on my computer today, and I noticed that all of my tray and desktop icons had no images. Seemed rather strange, so I killed explorer.exe and restarted the process, and they were still missing. So I rebooted my computer, and now my previously set tray and desktop icons are all gone (with the exception of the ones from programs installed across all users). I started up Chrome and OneDrive and noticed that none of my settings are there anymore, and I also checked my downloads folder and saw that it is completely empty, with no remnants in the recycle bin. I also ran Recuva and could not find the missing files. The files in My Documents are still there, and all of my programs are still installed and working as well as the drivers. So what could have happened? Yesterday, my computer was working fine.I have AVG 2015 installed, and I haven't been doing anything too weird. My computer is a:

Dell Latitude E7240
Windows 7 Pro SP1

EDIT: I found my C:/Users/[My Profile]/Downloads, but clicking the Downloads button in Windows Explorer doesn't seem to take me there. Interesting.

A:User Settings and Downloads Folder Gone

Hi. Boot into safe mode and see if anything is different. If it's the same, go to CMD, type in CHKDSK /R and press enter. When asked whether to schedule a disk check on next reboot, type Y and then restart your computer. The disk check will run upon reboot and it's gonna take some time. Do not interfere with the process even if it appears stuck. Do this while plugged in to AC power. This test could last for hours, depending on the size and health of your disk. If it has a lot of bad sectors, it's gonna take really long.

So I bought 2TB HDD for week ago, didn't use it but thought I'd sort all folders today

Anyways, something is very messed up

Double disk locations

(neither of them shortcuts)

No download folder (shown in first pic)

Basically I were going to try store download stuff on my new larger disk (done before, worked), had an error this time and it didn't work. I still got the files left from the download folder, however the download folder is now just a "normal" folder left now, and is not registered as the actual download folder, as the special icon for the folder is gone, and when I download stuff it just stores in the main E (new disk) folder

Anyways, I think I understand what is going on, the E disk pretends to be the download disk, which explains both problems, however how do I solve this?

My downloads have started to automatically go into my temporary folder. There is a way to stop this, but I've forgotten what to do. Someone please help.

A:stopping downloads from going into temporary folder

Hey Monidean,
I always save my downloads. This way you can browse for what drive and directory/folder you wish to put them in,or create a new folder for them.
Not only this, but then you can also choose where to install them.
Hope this helps!
Good luck,
