Updates to Window 8 Apps and Installation of Apps

Q: Updates to Window 8 Apps and Installation of Apps

Hi, My name is Roy, ive searched all the other forum threads in this topic and i couldn't find what i was looking for.

Now, my problem is that my Windows 8 apps wont update and i cant install new apps. ive had this problem before, but i forgot how to solve it. I remember it had something to do with a folder not being in the C:/windows folder. I also remember it began with a "A" (Appinstaller?).

i was wondering if anyone who CAN install their apps and update them could look into their C:/Windows folder and write down a list of folders that appear starting with the letter "A".

Thanks in advanced!

Roy (emoteen134)

Hello Roy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Usually when you have issues with installing or updated apps from the Store, you would need to clear the Store cache to fix it.
Store Cache - Clear in Windows 8
If that doesn't help, then double check through the troubleshooting steps in the tutorial below to see if one may be the issue.

Newly installed apps. ot appearing in program menu unable to pin apps to start menu.

This happened to me previously and I could find no solution....I eventually created a new admin profile, where newly installed apps appeared in the program menu and I could pin apps tomthe start menu feom a desktopmshortxut etc.

I copied over my video docs pictures and music folders to the new profile. Now a few months later the same thing is happening again. I have created a new admin profile and it all, works fine there. I have searched on the internet and others have the same issue, but of course anything you search for always finds someone else with the same issue...

Hopefully someone can help me with this very annoying problem

A:Newly installed apps. ot appearing in program menu unable to pin apps

UPDATE
actually resolved the issue....I turned on windows update and did a massive update, the start menu looks a little different, maybe a different font, pinned items can only be mace smaller or bigger, used to be an option for long ( didnt use this anyway ) but new apps now showing and pin to start menu works.....so MS fixed it, there is some advantage to updating, have backed up with true image and turned off updating, will back up again before updating next time......the update didnt like GPU-Z and temoved it plus a few other apps and turned defender back on i think.......shutup-10 sorted all this out.....

Hi,

As the post title suggests, I am having trouble with the modern apps and connectivity. It feels like half my computer will connect to the internet, and the other half won't. Desktop apps like Chrome, Steam, Outlook, iTunes etc. all connect to the internet fine, but any of the Windows apps like Xbox, Store and (most frustratingly) Settings will not connect.

In my network and sharing centre in the control panel it says 'You are not connected to any networks' - but in the system tray, and in the settings app it shows me as connected to my home wi-fi. I am on a desktop, and using a USB wireless adapter. I don't think the adapter is the problem as I have tried it on another desktop in our house on Windows 10 and it worked fine. Curiously also, when I click 'Adapter settings' in the control panel, it shows the wifi connection.

I've tried updating the drivers for the wireless adapter, both through the Windows update and adapter website but to no avail (and as I mentioned, it seems the adapter works fine elsewhere). I've updated manually to the latest Windows 10 Pro build, i've done a DNS flush, I've tried disabling firewalls and anti-virus, I've tried disabling startup apps, I've done a clean install of Windows 10 and still am unable to fix the issue.

If anyone has any ideas that might help that would be great. I'm happy to provide any more information if people need it.

Thanks very much.

A:Modern apps not connecting to internet, desktop apps work fine.

Is your DNS client service running on your system .

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.In the list of services, click DNS Client.Make sure that the Status column displays Started and that the Startup Type column displays Automatic. If the service is not set to Started or if the startup type for the DNS Client service is not set to Automatic, follow these steps:
Right-click DNS Client, and then click Properties. In the DNS Client Properties dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Automatic in the Startup type list.Click Start, click Apply, and then click OK.

Hi,

I've been struggling with this problem for a few days now. The problem is that I do NOT have internet access for firefox/chrome/dropbox/etc but i DO have internet access for IE and certain OS apps (like Network Troubleshooter). I've read and tried most of the typical solutions with no avail.

What I've Tried:
Safemode with Networking - same situation, I can use IE but not Firefox/Chrome/etc
Reseting Winsock (netsh winsock reset, etc) - didn't work, possibly just made matters worse?
Flushing DNS (ipconfig /flushdns, etc)
I do NOT have a special proxy, and neither firefox, nor chrome, nor IE are trying to use one
I have added exceptions in Windows Firewall, then just straight up disabled the firewall
I have Avira antivirus, but it does not contain any firewall features and no place that I can see to add any such exception
LSP-Fix.exe (I tried to fix the LSP registery, it found 1 problem from leftover Bonjour dll, and I've repaired it but its changed nothing)
I ran quick-scan on malwarebytes - found nothing
I ran checkdisk and found no errors
I have no system restore point
Also, with firefox, I hve tried it in safe-mode and created a new profile, but that hasn't changed anything. When I try to make a connection with firebug open, it says the request was "aborted"

Because native Microsoft software (IE, OS software) has no problem connecting to the internet, I'm just trying to figure out what bridge was burned between firefox/ch... Read more

Ok, so literally nothing was working - I did a "Repair Install" using my windows 7 cd. It took 2 hours, but when it finished up all of my networking was working So, for those of you who are having similar issues, as a last resort I'd give that a shot. Definitely read a few articles about what is required to successfully perform a Repair Install, as you don't want anything going wrong during that process.

I was given a Windows 8.1 tablet that once had a detachable keyboard which the guy lost. he reset the whole computer and after I got my information on it instead. After the reset, Windows was no longer activated and I had to reactivate it. which neither of us knows why, it was activated before we did a data factory reset. after I created my user, I installed a bunch of exes. now I go to try to see if I could test out the Windows Store to search for apps. but I search "Windows Store" or "app store" and several other things that may bring it up, but it always says, "no apps match your search" like if the Windows store is missing or somehow magically removed with the reset process. How do I get it back?

Hi
i do prefer a local account
but when i try to install new apps from app store
w8.1 asks me to switch to a microsoft account

can i install apps with a local account?
and how can i understand if i have a local account or microsoft account

thanks

A:can i install apps from apps store with a local account?

See the screenshot below for selection you have to make for not to convert your local account to a Microsoft Account:

Windows Store - Sign in with Different Microsoft Account in Windows 8

Screenshot from tutorial Skype App - Use with Local Account in Windows 8.

You of course need an email address (Microsoft Account) but it will only be used for the app in question (Windows Store is also just an app), so in the next dialog either give an existing Microsoft Account credentials or select Sign up for a Microsoft account to create a new one to be used with Store app:

Your Windows sign in account will remain local, it will not be converted to a Microsoft Account.

OK, i'd like to make it clear that i'm using the so-called "real" Administrator account that is hidden but can be activated, not a regular account with admin privelidges. At first i was trying to figure out if Metro apps can be used by this account, and it appeared that they cant, but managed to find a trick to enable it. i did it by making sure UAC is on, making sure that FilterAdministratorToken is set to a value of 1 in the Registry, and by enabling "User Account Control: Admin approval mode for the built-in Administrator account" (secpol.msc [Local Security Policy]> Local Policies> Security Options).

So i did a bit more research and toying around, only to discover that although i might have found a workaround for running most Metro apps in general, i discovered that syncing, d/l'ing of apps from the Windows Store, etc is not possible unless you're using a Microsoft account. Please note that any other account with admin privelidges can use the apps without a hitch, as well as any Standard account. So it clearly is not a limitation of just having an admin account, alone.

Also, the built-in Admin is the only kind of account that cant be converted from a local account to a MS Account, all other accounts with admin privelidges can do so. If you look in the Control Panel and try to make changes to the account, you will find that the option isnt available, whereas with other accounts it is. This brings about the issue of not being able to sync or d/l... Read more

A:Use Metro Apps As Admin AND Be Able To Sync, d/l Store apps, etc???

Hello Stephen, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Setting that security policy below to be enabled will basically just turn the built-in elevated "Administrator" account into an unelevated administator account that requires UAC approval to open or run anything that requires elevated rights to do so.

This would be why you are able to open the Store afterwards, but you would still need to sign into the Store with any Microsoft account to be able to install any "Metro" Store apps.
Windows Store - Sign in with Different Microsoft Account in Windows 8

You still will not be able to switch the built-in "Administrator" to be a Microsoft account. It can only remain as a local account.

Hope this helps,

When you go into the Windows Store and right click and choose 'your apps' the selection 'apps not istalled on this pc' still shows apps that I have deleted. Hi Everyone,

I'm superlulu from France (sorry my English)
I'm installing Windows 10 on new computer for my organization . I try to configurate one with fresh install (package of apps like Libreoffice, VLC, etc. for users) and custom desktop describes in this tutorial:

Default User Profile - Customize in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

It works fine, in audit mode I install apps, drivers, custom desktop and configure default apps like google chrome for internet browser, adobe reader for pdf files etc.

then I run the command line to enter oobe mode generalize. Everything is ok, I continue my install. Then I create new user local account. And when windows starts, I have my custom desktop but default apps are removed (Microsoft Edge replace Chrome, Pdf files are read with Edge, etc.) and Apps Windows like "Weather" or "Actualities" crash . I really don't understand what happened... i try many times for same issue...

Does anyone have an idea ?

Thanks a lot

I never tried sysprepping 10 but i have faced similar issues with 8.1. Turned out that you need to save the default app associations to an XML file using DISM (before Generalizing the image ) and later import it.

Export or Import Default Application Associations

Configure, export, import App File Associations in Windows 8.1

I have used "Setupcomplete.cmd" to auto import the app associations during the last face of install.

Add a Custom Script to Windows Setup
You may also need to disable the new app notification before generalizing the image.

Win 10 has inbuilt/default apps that cannot be uninstalled officially. Some can be uninstalled.

Now if you sign-in in Store app, it shows updates available...And updates available shows updates for both installed default apps & uninstalled default apps too.

I have removed default apps that can be removed officially i.e has uninstall option.

I have set updates for apps in Store to disable. I dont use apps except Calc.

Do you guys updates apps? And not updating the apps pose security risks?

Various updates to native apps available today including mail & calendar, news, money, weather. All run manually from store. All went in first time and verified as still working across all user accounts. Recommend if you run multiple user accounts that you take a restore point prior to running these in case you need to rollback should any of these apps corrupt.

Hi! Welcome to SevenForums!

Have you tried locking the taskbar? Try it.

If that doesn't work, right click the taskbar and click properties. [See Screenshot Called Properties]

Then under Notification Area click Customize. [See Screenshot called Customize]

Then tick the box at the bottom and click apply. [See Screenshot called Notification Area.]

Try that and report back!

Hello all,

I am new here, although I did come here quite a few times and many times found the solution :-)

My problem is (I am on 1511) that some icons of removed (by powershell) apps reapeared, and there seem to be no way to get rid of them. Nothing I have found had worked (like going to start menu folder and deleting the shorcuts).

Namely it's MicrosoftWindowsAlarms, MicrosoftZuneMusic, MicrosoftWindowsPhotos, and in Apps the name looks like this: @{Microsoft.WindowsAlarms_10.1607.1991.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwems-resource--Microsoft.WindowsAlarms-Resources-AppName-Text}

Moreover, few days ago some "new" apps have materialized - that was a shock........no update, nothing, out of blue I had about 10 unwanted apps in my all apps...............crazy.

Any thoughts?

P.S. Normally I deffer updates by turning the service off and/or metered connection. Now I have left it on by mistake...........still should not install against my will some unwanted apps..........and as I said, no update.....

A:Icons of uninstalled apps showing in All apps

Those left-over icons may be a result of deleting programs instead of using Control Panel, Programs and Features to uninstall the programs. When a program is installed the install routine puts the program files in either C:\Program Files [32-bit] or C:\Program Files for 64-bit or C:\Program Files (x86) for 32-bit depending upon which version of the OS is in use. It will also create the icons, write support files to C:\Windows or other Folders and create Registry entries so Windows knows how to run the program. The uninstall routine is supposed to get rid of everything associated, don't know if PowerShell can do it as cleanly.

Hey Guys!

I didn't know who to turn to and you guys seem to know alot about Windows 10 so far and might be able to help me. I have been using WIndows 10 since they released it and one issue has been plaguing me since then. Whenever I leave my computer and come back after some time i will notice apps are opened sitting in my taskbar. The main apps that do it are Photo and Calendar.

I don't use those apps for either photo or calendar things and I am not even signed into Windows 10 with a MS account.

But every hour or so, these apps open up and hang out in my taskbar. I have even removed them from default apps and uninstalled what I could but no luck.

Any ideas.

A:Window 10 Apps Keep Opening On Their Own.

I have the same issue... but so far only with the Photos app. I'll look down and notice it in the taskbar, then I open it, but there's never any image loaded, and I don't recall clicking/evoking anything that would make the system think I wanted to view an image.

Also of note (?), this only happens on my secondary monitor (I run the latest version of DisplayFusionPro).

Lastly, can I confirm... no such thing as right-clicking an image and selecting Preview anymore? Is the Photos app - or an equivalent - the new norm?

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Hey guys,

I have had this issue for awhile now, and didn't think much of it. But here is the exact issue.

Whenever I install a new program, it never gets populated in the start menu. So I assumed that the installer executable wasn't making a shortcut there despite telling it to. Didn't think anything of it.

However, just today I went to install an app from the Windows Store and everything downloads and installs fine. No issues at all. Went into my start menu, clicked the arrow to show all apps, and it is not there. Normally when a new program gets installed, you see a new icon in the start menu and it says "new" next to it. I did not even find the icon for the app. I then went back into the Windows Store, and went to account, then my apps, and it shows that it was once installed because it says "you own this app" but below the name of the app, its says "Not Installed" so I install it again, and everything goes fine, if I click on the pop up notification at the top right of my screen, the app launches. But once I close the app, there is no way for me to get back into it again. And it still shows "Not Installed" in the Windows Store.

My first assumption was okay, there is a problem with permissions with the files/folders. But I double checked my start menu folder and everything matches there with my surface pro 2, and that functions as it should.

I really can't find anything on the web either. Everything says "click ... Read more

Very often when I have focus on an app that has more than one window open, and then change focus to another app (always using the task bar) another window for the first app appears over the one that I had focused. This has caused a lot of cussing lately, because I've been doing these copy and paste operations, wherein I paste to the wrong window, without realizing it, which does real damage. What can I do about that?

A:Window changes precedence when switching apps

From what I gather, the loss is due to the original app having priority in the processing queue and still working and when it 'finishes' it gets displayed as the first priority.

Bottom line - slow down, let the first app do its' thing then proceeed..

Now, you might get free of that issue if using multiple core or HT cpu by setting affinity for 1 app to core 1 and another app to core 2, like that.

I am using windows 8.1. It was ok till some day before. Now when I click the windows' app button, it shows "This app can't open. Contact your system administrator about repairing or reinstalling it." So what should I do now? Any suggestion. I tried troubleshooter but it does not work and my store app is not working too (even though it does show that sign).

Ever since the update my windows apps(edge, weather app etc) have this issue in which tabs and menus just keep flashing and are un-clickable as if a key on my keyboard is being held down. I unplugged my keyboard but there was no change. Rebooting my computer fixes the issue temporarily.

Edit: figured it out, apparently my DS4 controller was causing the issue, wasnt even aware you could control these apps with a gaming controller lol.

Working on an HP 5800 sff running Win XP Pro, SP3, with MS Office 2007 installed.

In our corporate environment, we push out Windows updates once a month. I have a user who, for the past few months, loses either Word or Excel from the Office suite when the updates are applied. And I don't mean they don't work, I mean they are gone, icons and everything. I can reinstall the apps and things are fine until next month when the updates go out again. I've tried un/re installing the Office suite in it's entirety, but that doesn't fix the issue. I've googled and binged this issue to no avail. Does anyone have any insight, or perhaps someone has seen this before?

Hello,

Is there any other free apps around that can prevent users from installing all kinds of software, pretty much like Deep Freeze. See I'm running a small internet cafe business, and I hate it when people install all kinds of third-party apps (e.g Yontoo). Kids are regulars here in my cafe and some have no idea what they're doing with the system.

I don't want to use Deep Freeze. I want something simple to use and with much flexibility.

Thanks.

hi im just wondering what apps should not be removed i have windows installed onto a small ssd and will never use any of the apps besides calculator off the top of my head, and its a laptop so really i don't need apps. i have already uninstalled cortana and it now crashes computer while typing into start so anything like that is what im looking for thanks

A:what apps should not be removed (breaks installation)?

Hi, quite agree about ignoring apps mostly. Best to use Classic Shell or similar as a start menu.

Cortana is not intended to be removed. There is no formal easy way to remove any of the universal apps except with powershell commands. It simply isn't worth bothering, as these will be reinstated in any new upgrade released by MS such as the November build. There will be more to come.

Note too that the powershell commands to reinstall/repair apps now break them last I knew - we hope MS will fix that.

This implies fixing your PC now means either
- you restore a previously created disk image (you do use disk imaging, don't you.. it's a huge advantage
or
- you do an in-place upgrade repair install (see tutorial section for full instructions).

Newbie here! Just installed a few MS security updates and for the third time I have driver, application and software malfunctions. Touch-pad: just moving the cursor causes the open window to re-size, dialog boxes open and close for no apparent reason. Function Keys: none work except one that causes the menu bar to hide then reappear. All my restore points wiped out, even though I had plenty of hard disc space allocated and left free. So I cannot restore!!!
The last time I downloaded security updates, my music files ended up all messed up. 340 songs in one file with no information as to album or song name.
This is the third time these types of problems have occurred. I am getting tired of restoring this Toshiba back to out of box condition.
I am just letting off steam. No way to fix but to do a wipe.
Microsoft if the best sales agent for Mac Book.
If anyone actually has a suggestion including "Nuke" Seattle, I am open.

I am experiencing a large number of application crashes and conflicts. For instance Eclipse IDE is crashing and refusing to cooperate. Also many of my game applications are crashing. I have 4 gigs of memory but the system is hogging it. When this first started happening I bought Avast! anti-virus thinking that it was a virus. Now unless I turn Avast off I can't access webpages. As a last ditch effort I downloaded a windows 7 dvd and reinstalled windows trying to repair any damaged files. Tonight I called Avast tech support and they wanted to charge me $190 to have an expert clear all the junk files out. He has some voodoo that was cool revealing various caches and logs of all the applications that were failing. This was his proof that an expert was needed. Unfortunately I don't have any money to spend so a friend of mine recommended this site.

The Tech Support guy also said that my windows security updates were a problem. It seems like there is a lot of conflicts that need to be sorted. I would like to figure out how to do this.

Now what? I would particularly be interested in the voodoo which seemed to involve Performance monitor and opening log files. How do I do that?

A:I need help "Cleaning" my windows installation (Apps crashing)

I'm pretty sure that pchealthboost.com does that for wayyyyy less than $190! And while you're at it, uninstall Avast and any other malware/antivirus programs you have installed and try to find one single program that does everything so that you don't have the old McAfee vs Norton conflicts of the late 90s. hehe. Hope I was able to help you, even a little bit! But, do try pchealthboost. They worked miracles on my computer. Cleaned up all the redundancies and errors. :D

I was wondering why I have to reinstall apps after a terminal server installation. I have installed terminal server and not reinstalled anything. Everything still works as expected.

The main program people will be running is Vfox (Visual FoxPro 5/6) on the servers I am rolling Terminal Server out to. I so far haven't noticed any problem in this. I am running Windows 2003 Server.

Can somebody let me know if I am heading for a pitfall or if this is ok. I get the impression that the reason you are told in reinstall applications is to make sure that they are installed in multiuser mode, but I can't see why I'd want to do this if I'm not having problems with it.

Anyone care to explain?

After I did an update of nVidia 9600 gt driver in 'Windows Update', no longer is the window size of ANY applications that were open at the time of the update remembered (after I resize them, then close them then reopen them).

It didn't affect all apps - Firefox was fine, but Internet Explorer, all MS Office apps, Corel PhotoPaint, etc can no longer remember the size I made their windows.

It didn't help to put the old driver back - in fact it made it worse, as by then I had even more apps open, and now none of those can't remember the window size either.

There must be some place in the registry where a change got made for each of these programs that can be fixed?

Thanks for your help.

Hello! Once upon a time there was a windows update. Yup, caused problems.

Pretty sure it wiped out my older system restore points (could be me of course but not likely on this).

So with that fix useless, am left with apps which startup via an .exe or a shortcut (Not win7 system apps) that opens the app fine but is a small to tiny window with tiny text .

The odd (maybe) thing is these apps (registry/data clean/malware) when opened in safe mode, just work dandy as can be, with the large window and easily readable text as they always have been in the past.

So go figure, eh? The right click with properties & size changes I have tried from research have not worked. Same with drag the sides etc.

Anybody got a thought on this weird one?

Thanks much in advance, James

I am experiencing the following very strange intermittent problems and evil behavior in XP.

My Start Menu sometimes only appears for a split second when clicked and will not stay displayed. Also minimised apps. wont maximise and apps. and short cuts on the desktop wont launch when double left clicked and instead show properties as if they were right clicked!!

I have done the following to try and resolve these issues.

1. Updated from SP1 to SP 2 as well as all the security updates.

2. Ran Adaware and Spybot to find any unwelcome visitors. Adaware only found one minor issue.

3. Ran Symantec Antivirus which found and quarantined several viruses.

4. Ran WinDoctor which found and said it resolved quite a few issues.

This is really a pain as it makes the system virtually unusable except for when it is behaving which is rare.

Would be grateful for any suggestions, solutions, incantations or workarounds for this issue/s

Kind regards

Binaryboy

Please post a HJT log for us to review.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I save almost everything into Dropbox. When I try and attach an file to an email through the Chrome app (non-desktop version), the Dropbox app (not the programme on running on my desktop) will not allow me to select the files to add. I think this is because the Dropbox app is essentially the same as the website and I would have to download the item first. This wouldn't be a huge problem if I was able to get at the document some other way but I get stuck!

I can attach the document if I switch back to the Chrome desktop app, but I am not sure how I managed to make this change the first time!

Does anyone have any ideas about how to switch from between app modes? Thanks in advance

I can only connect to the network using 64 bit applications on Window 7 Pro SP1.

The problem occured after installing the latest version of iTunes (may or may not be related). I uninstalled iTunes with no change. IE 32 bit crashes after opening. Firefox opens but gives Server Not Found error. I cannot connect webservers on the local network with Firefox either. Filezilla will not connect to local or remote servers. VNC will not connect to local servers - IE 64 works fine and command line tools like ftp and telnet to internal and external sites works fine - this is not a DNS, Firewall, or Routing issue.

Same results in Safe Mode
sfc /scannow runs clean.

I reset the winsock, uninstalled all my network adapters, including the drivers and resinstalled them. Rebooted multiple times.

Unfortunately I just discoved that System Restore was not enabled so I can't roll back.

I doubt this is malware related as I have multiple levels of defense (postini, SpyShelter, Symantec Endpoint) and outside of iTunes have not downloaded or installed anything or even visited unusual websites. I'm about to do a deep scan that will probably take a few hours just to play it safe.

Please! Does anyone have any suggestions? I see plenty of posts about similar issues but either they never get resoved without a rebuild or the winsock reset works.

Thanks!

This is a problem that I've found a lot on the Internet but have yet to find a solution that works in my case.
I am using Windows 8.1
I cannot download apps from the Store and an error message says that this is due to Windows Firewall not being turned on.
I cannot turn Windows Firewall on because we error message says that it cannot change some of my settings. (Side note: I am using Avast but even when this is turned on I get the same message from the Store)
I cannot start it manually as I get an error message there too (I'll update with exact wording later as I'm currently on my phone)
I am also completely unable to restore to factory settings or create any recovery media.
I have done comprehensive virus scans and have absolutely no issues in that sense.
I have reset Internet Explorer (apparently to reset my connection) to no avail.
I've tried every solution I've found online and I'm just stumped. Help would be deeply appreciated.

In installation window the window is minimised as always and some option get hidden, like they cut off only slightly showing a portion of selection button.. Like when installing program there shows selection button like, NEXT to carry on installation and CANCEL button to stop installation. It happens like NEXT button partially showing and other selection button cut off outer of that minimised windows.. Same problem with apps which use by default minimised window. Some selection option cutoff.. Though there no option to make those apps maximised. Is this problem because i use full HD monitor..? I would so happy if anyone knows what to do..^_^

I've recently noticed a Windows update that changes the way you close apps, amongst a number of other things.

What it was:

What it is now:

And you know what? This update was unticked in the 'Update and Recovery' section. Every other update had a checkbox ticked, this one didn't.

Other changes bought along by installing this update:

- New applications in the 'Apps' section of the Start menu are now highlighted with a greybox.

- Shut down options now in the start menu (and search, I'm not sure)

One extra thing that seems to be around depending on... something.

This one's related with Chrome. Usually when you start typing in the url box, your search terms are cut off with a rounded border going around. This box has disappeared with the latest update, but I have seen this happening in earlier versions of Windows.

Hi everybody.
I have searched now for the last 4 hours every forum, but I did not find a solution. I just bought today a lumia 550 with windows 10 (10.0.10586.0).
If I want to download an app from the store (e.g. whatsapp) the download starts but than it remains at 0.0. However the connection is good, I can surf in the internet, update my mails, etc. but the store downloads don't work.
Does anybody have a solution? I?m pretty desparate. I also did the region and time setting thing, but it didn?t help
Thanks a lot in advance'

I originally had 8.1 on my laptop  and at one point it stopped being able to install updates. They would fail every time it tried. I ended up doing a reformat since I couldn't find a cause for the problem. Well this time I left it at 8 but after around a month it started again. It can't do updates ,it can't  install win 8.1 ,  apps won't turn on (was finally able get the app store to start). Also system refresh and any other repair thing won't work. Firefox also acts funny  where ad block won't work and  certain settings won't save.  I've run every scan I can think of but have not found anything. I'm at a lost what to do not knowing if it is some kind of virus or hardware malfunction or something else. The system uses a partition to reformat from not a disk. I also here a periodic clicking and the  dvd drive or hard drive (not sure which) would rev occasionally. I don't think it has done it recently.  The computer is a asus g75  gforce gtx 670mx.

Some of the scans I've done are  avast and avg, malware bytes, advance system care, ccleaner, bitdefender, Microsoft malicious scan, spybot search and destroy. Also some Microsoft system file scan but forget the name. I didn't have both anti virus on system at the same time.

Just wondering if anyone had some imput on the best free apps to run on a brand new installation of xp sp2... mainly Anti-virus, Anti-spyware, software based firewall... ect. The rules change from time to time, and I have not been following the changes for some time, so I thought I would create a thread and ask for some advice here..

I usually run:
Free AVG AV
the new free AVG antispyware
adaware... scan about once a month
spybot to immunize... ocasionally scan.
Firefox for my web browser.

I used to run zone alarm, but found it was interfering alot with my ability to network my home computers... That could be a secondary question... Is there a way to run a software based firewall so that it does not interfere with networking within a home workgroup?

your advice is appreciated. Thanks!

This is a company/business user's computer, so much of the software might be in-house software. The anti-virus is provided by Trend Micro. Computer is a Dell Latitude D600 running Windows XP, SP2.

Problem: Original issue user reported was that Microsoft Word locked and froze when opening. Microsoft Word was unistalled in preparation for a re-install.

New/Additional Problem(s):
Computer is running very slowly.
Anytime IE is closed, (and sometimes when other applications are closed,) or any part of the computer is browsed to, the "Internet Explorer has an encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." pops up.
Accessing the data of the error report reveals the ModName: hostie.dll as the problem.

Hey guys.

So I live in Ireland and when installing Windows 8, I set some language choices to Irish (keyboard and date/time), but language to English UK. In previous installations of Windows, such as Windows 7, this did not make apps show up with Irish language titles.

After removing Ireland from the Language options > Control Panel - Language, some apps went back to displaying in English. But other Modern UI apps, like the news still show up in Irish titles.

Have I missed a setting of some sort? I have attached a screenshot of my language options, just in-case i'm missing something.
PS: I have already rebooted a few times since changing these options.

Thanks!

EDIT: Fixed. The latest batch of Windows updates seems to have kicked it back into English. Thanks anyway!

Hello to everyone,

I have very annoying problem with Windows 8. The problem is in metro control panel "PC Settings".
I don't know what is the reason for removing all apps control in the Notifications menu.

I had this problem so many times and the only fix for this that I know - is to create a new microsoft account or to do clean install (which I don't like to try those suggestions anymore).

Any other solution mates?

A:"Show notifications from these apps" error, no apps listed

Hello, minomk. Welcome to Windows EightForums.

Not sure why you have to create a new microsoft account or to do clean install. Apps can notify a user when new content arrives. Not quite sure what your problem is. Do you want to shut notifications off for all your apps? Perhaps particular apps?

Push "Show notifications from these apps" to pick on/off individually.

I hope that helps you.

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and was excited to find it as there are a lot of people giving great answers to Windows 10 problems and I sadly ran into one recently. I have had Windows 10 installed for about 4 months now and things have been going decent. A couple of days ago my system received a Windows 10 update that took about 2 hours and looked like it was installing Windows all over again (but it wasn't) and once this happened I couldn't find the Microsoft Edge application and the start button would not work at all. After doing a system restore to a date prior to the update things are back to "normal" except for this one problem.

Currently my start menu does not show any Recently Used or Favorite Apps in it as shown below:

If I select the All apps button it also shows nothing:

I made sure that all of the settings in order to see recently used apps and all my apps are correct as below are my settings:

I have tried a couple of solutions that handled Cortana not searching for programs or "some" apps were missing from all apps but I have yet to find a solution to when absolutely no apps are showing in the start menu. I know the applications still exist on my machine as I use Firefox and Microsoft Word and Outlook plus many more apps but they aren't showing up at all. I am also under a local account instead of my Microsoft account and both have this problem.

Has anyone ran into this before or know how to fix this situa... Read more

New to this forum: I have been unsuccessfully trying to resolve this issue through other forums. I am unable to "Get" new apps since Anniversary Update.
Lumie 640 LTE, Windows 10 Mobile Build 10.0.14393.189
Can't "Get" new apps from App Store. I get the message: "Try that again. Something happened on our end. Waiting a bit might help."
Can get updates for installed apps.
Can download/reinstall "owned apps" that were previously uninstalled.
Can download/install apps which were installed on my other Lumia 640 LTE on Window Phone 8.1. Any "Owned" app seems to be no problem.
This is what I have done so far: Soft reset including removing battery. Hard reset and restore. Reset time zone. Turn on/turn off battery saver. Verified that both of my Lumia 640's are listed under "Devices" in my Microsoft Account.
Hope someone can shed some light on this, and I don't have to wait on a future update to rectify the problem.

Is there any better way to do this. Anyone know of a fix or have others experienced this problem?

Hi,

I like to make a thread here for people to discuss Apps. To be honest i am not really a big fan of them but i do think they have their place on a mobile phone or tablet and not on a powerful computer.
The reason i am not a big fan of Apps is because they are really just cut down versions of programs you have on a computer. On a computer Why would you use an App instead of using the full programe or the website you can go to? I know that Apps are designed to make life easier but i have felt recently as Apps seem to be everywhere these days and are not going away, That they seem to have made people very lazy in computing, Some people cant even be bothered to switch on their pc and this is not a good thing!
Woman are a very good example here as they love their phones and are always using the App version of a programe instead of using a computer and it kinda gets me cross if like me a computer user is using the same programe as they are and they cant access all the features you can, It is really very frustrating!

What do you people think?
Do i have a point?

I like Win 8 and some of the apps are useful but i always seem to goto my desktop and never the Metro to do my computing and to be honest felt the apps are best suited to a tablet as they are are a touch screen.

I can only connect to the network using 64 bit applications on Window 7 Pro SP1. The problem occurred immediately after installing the latest version of iTunes (may or may not be related). I uninstalled iTunes with no change then reinstalled just to see if there was a difference: nope. IE 32-bit crashes after launching. Firefox opens but gives a "Server Not Found" error for all requests, local or internet. Filezilla will not connect to local or remote FTP servers. When I ciick on the new tab that shows apps three out of four apps I have selected are showing generic icons rather than the normal icons, also three out of the four are grey; they are as follows:-

1] Web Store-----------color
2] YouTube-------------grey
3] Google Search-----grey
4] Gmail-----------------grey

I have run the Chrome Cleaner, uninstalled/re-installed Chrome, deleted the app extension, reinstalled the app extension to no avail. Each time the grey icons appear and on the last go round they appeared as generic cubes. To boot the same condition applies to my other two computers. It seems when I install Chrome each time this condition manifests itself no matter where I install it; it's like it's locked in to any install on any machine be it laptop or desktop, like I inherit it. I was given these instructions but am unclear on exactly what they mean and how to go about doing it and that is to remove the following.

Hello together,

I am new here and I can't find my Question answered for the last three Days now....

I wish to remove from "All Apps" some Programs. I do not wish to uninstall them, but just to remove them from that list.

I found that I can add here X:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu things to autostart, but thats mostly it.

As example, i wish to remove "Steam" folder and Link in the "All Apps" .... but I cannot find anything how to do, besides of a uninstall

Same goes for lots of other stuff I get from Windows as default added... Cortana, Groove-Music, Mail, Contacts, Xbox and what not. I am simply not using all that stuff and it just bothers me that i have to scroll everytime so long to get where i want.

Is there a way, an Program or something that I can hide/remove here all unwanted Links to stuff I do not use at all?

In Win7 I had such a neat and completely clean Startmenu. This Tiles are nice, but I want to have everything clean and the way I want it, and not how the OS is forcing me to have. Like Accesoire... that Point in Win7 really came down to the Stuff i am SOMETIMES using, everything else was removed. IF i need something, i can check where to find that Application via Explorer.... and well, that never happened till now

Any idea how to do that or what Application I can use for a cleanup?

A:Remove/Hide Apps in "All Apps"

Oh damn! ... I think I have found it, by accident

Start -> All Apps -> Folder:AMD Catalyst Control Center -> Right Click on App:AMD Catalyst Control Center -> More -> Open Folder (Can't translate it correctly to English as it is German Language OS) -> VOILA!

X:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Seems like I can move and remove Stuff to get everything sorted out as i need it!

Whohooo.

Edit: Maybe not that easy *sigh* removed several things, but the folder/link still exists, but doesn't work anymore and there are not all Apps to find.. like xbox and other System bloated stuff.

Hopefully other users will be able to provide you a technical answer to these questions (I've just answered your related post on ''Windows Backup'' within CACS)

But I'm wondering, when you say these options are disabled, are the boxes for ''Startup Apps'' and ''Windows Backup'' not checked for you, but simply greyed out?

Immediately after purchasing an 8 GB USB flash drive with the intention of running portable applications off it on the various Windows XP machines I have to use, I had installed the Portable Apps Base (http://portableapps.com/suite) and then through it, several applications, including OpenOffice Portable, Firefox portable and Tucan Portable.

Probably after using the drive on one of my office computers, some files and folders seemed to become corrupted. After trying unsuccessfully to delete mysterious, un-openable files with special characters in their names that appeared seemingly from nowhere, I formated the drive.

After formating, I was able to copy data and music files from my computer's hard drive to the flash drive correctly. However, I am now unable to properly re-install the PortableApps Base program on the flash drive. Thus, the main purpose of buying it is
defeated.

The PortableApps software does seem to install, but when I double-click on the StartPortableApps.exe icon on the flash drive
(F:\Software\Portable\StartPortableApps.exe), I get various error messages. Sometimes the message says that only part of the read request could be executed, and sometimes I get "StartPortableApps.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". I got the latter after scanning the drive with an antivirus (no virus detected) and then checking the drive for errors (F -> right clock -> Properties -> Tools -> Error checking).

As a lay person, my guess is ... Read more

Hi, I just got an Asus R510DP-FH11 laptop (Newegg.com - ASUS R510DP-FH11 AMD A-Series A10-5750M (2.50GHz) 8GB Memory 750GB HDD 15.6" Notebook Windows 8 (64 bit)) and, after installing a bunch of updates, got Windows 8.1.

Last night I started getting a strange issue, and I can't find anything about it on google. When I bring up the start menu, scroll down to the apps menu, and move the mouse at all, it instantly brings me to the desktop where "Asus Installation Wizard" will launch and then immediately tell me that I don't have the supported hardware (even though the Asus Live Update program tells me everything is fine and up to date). I can close it, but it just happens again and again when I visit the apps menu, and ONLY when I visit the apps menu. It doesn't happen on startup or any other time.
Nevermind what the actual program is doing, I can't seem to find out how to stop it from launching. I cannot do anything in the apps menu because of this.
Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.

Let's have a look at the setup. Here's how to show us:

I have a nearly fresh install of Win7 32 bit on a pretty modern machine. It has been intermittently laggy since I installed Win7 about three weeks ago.

Here is a list of symptoms:
1) Apps are slow to open
2) Double clicks aren't registered until 5-10 seconds later
3) Typing is slow on most apps, but only intermittently
4) Most Net browsing is very slow - not slow to load, but slow to react and slow to open new tabs & windows

System specs: quad core Pentium, NForce 750 mobo, Nvidia G9500GT card with 1GB, 4GB 800mhz RAM, cable internet and Buffalo router.

Any thoughts on where to start?

I don't think it's a system issue. Also, the Win7 install is super fresh. Further, it's the second install on the same machine (I thought I could fix the same issue with a fresh install). My experience index is 4.6 limited by the graphics card.

A:Slow to open apps, all Net apps slow, slow to type... laggy everything

OK so I isolated the following:

- Antivirus: I am running Panda Cloud, which is the same AV as on the PC upstairs
- RAM: checks out fine, 4 GB, same amount runs fine on the PC upstairs
- Vidcard: system performance seems OK if I do not switch between programs. That is, if I stay in one program for a while, the systems runs at an acceptable speed.
- Web browser: system lag is identical in Chrome, IE, and Firefox.

"Switch between apps" window won't go away???.
Go to PC and devices -> App switching and turn OFF "Allow switching between recent apps"

A:The "Switch between apps" window won't go away.

When the Switch between Apps window comes up, move your mouse to the upper left hand corner to close it.
If the "Switch Between Apps" window still comes back, please follow this procedure:
1. Press the Windows key and the S to open the Search box.
2. Type in device manager and click on the app.
3. Expand the Human interface Devices in the Device Manager.
4. Right-click on the HID-compliant touch screen and select Disable.
5. Select Yes to answer ?Do you really want to disable it??
6. Close Device Manager
