Extremely long backup times w/ Paragon Free for W8

Q: Extremely long backup times w/ Paragon Free for W8

Hello,
I have used Paragon Free version for Windows 8 once before. Don't recall anything special... I am using the USB to my WD External drive. It took over 6 hours, and I don't know how much longer, as I went to sleep, to backup 26GB.
Is this normal? The drive is used on other computers with Paragon and Macrium and W7.
Thanks for any insight!
Glenn

A: Extremely long backup times w/ Paragon Free for W8

I don't do backups. I only do system images so I can't say for sure; however, it also depends greatly on the hardware speeds involved so let me give you an example of a how long it takes for me to create a system image on two different rigs and you can decide for yourself:

Rig1: creating a 17-18Gb image:
Using SATA III SSD to SATA II SSD, create System Image process takes about 5 minutes using inherent Win 7 imaging.

Rig2: creating a 16-17GB image:
Using SATA II SSD to SATA II hard drive, create System Image process takes 8-9 minutes using Macrium Reflect Free.

Now, you have to evaluate your own hardware and the best way to do that is compare my apples to your apples otherwise you can wait for someone else to respond that does true backups. Good luck.

Hi all
This might not be an issue for you - especially as it looks like a great FREE program but the amount of backups and restores I do I need it to work FAST.

Laptop - W7 X-64 partition (the OS not my data) 50 GB approx 27 GB used.

Paragon backup time 58 Mins
Acronis True Image 14 Mins

Both run at Max compression.

Although I have to PAY for acronis for me the vastly superior speed its worth it.

Don't get me wrong Paragon Backup seems fine if you can afford the time - and it also gives you a bootable "bare Metal" recovery.

Some of the "RAW" options might be interesting but I can't say I've ever needed or used this type of process.

Up to you -- Good software but seems a tad too slow compared with the commercial competition.

However - in any case please guys ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR SYSTEM (and data - inc music collections etc).

Cheers
jimbo

A:Paragon Free Backup (V10) - takes too long

I can only confirm your experience. I have tried Paragon products a number of times on different operating systems and they always been extremely slow. It finally came to the point that I made a promise to myself never to install a Paragon product again. I am now a happy Acronis user.

Hi Everyone,

I have Paragon's Free 2011 Backup program, and also Seagate's free DiscWizard program. Both have always worked reasonably well for me, requiring only about 5 or 6 minutes to do a disc image of my Patriot Inferno 60 GB SSD drive (only around 25 GBs of data) to a Samsung 1TB drive running in an external enclosure, fed by eSATA.

But ... since June 1, 2011 the backups have been excruciatingly SLOW to run. In fact, my usual 5 minute run is now around 2 hours and 20 minutes!!!

Has anyone else run into this strange behaviour lately? I thought it might have been a Windows 7 Update that messed something up, so I uninstalled the only updates that have arrived since June 1 (a few MS Visual C 2005 updates) but this has not made any difference.

Any help is much appreciated.

A:Paragon 2011 Free Now Takes Too Long to Backup

Since I posted this message, I have done a fresh backup with EaseUS Todo Backup 2.5.1 Free and also did a restore using the Linux boot disc. It worked PERFECTLY!

It took about 25 minutes to backup, which is slow in my opinion (though much faster than Paragon or Seagate lately), and only 11 minutes and 13 seconds to restore. This program also lets you schedule your backups, which is exactly what I wanted. So, until I can get some accurate feedback on why Paragon and Seagate have freaked out on me, I will be using this free EaseUS Todo program.

PS Win 7 did a complete image backup with its own Backup and Restore program tonight at 4 am. This consumed all of 10 minutes from beginning to end, and created an image file 21.6 GB in size. Thus it is clear that the only image backup programs that are running truly slow are the Paragon and Seagate versions. The EaseUS Todo program took around 25 minutes, and is probably slow as well, but not 2 1/2 to 3 hours slow like the former two!

Does anyone else have an SSD with about 23 gigs on it, which they are using Todo to image? How long does it take for you?

Hi!

I just found the new release of free backup software from Paragon.. it might be one to test, although I'm guessing it doesn't have much in the way of features.. did anyone know anything about this software?

Below what Paragon says about it -

"Easy step to total PC safety. FREE!
Backing up your data is like an insurance, you never have to worry if disaster strikes. Now there’s no more excuse for lost data – this insurance costs you nothing! If your system and data are safe now, keep them that way with Drive Backup 9.0 Express. This simple easy to use software doesn't ask you bewildering questions-it just backs up your data when and where you tell it, and recovers whenever disaster happens."

I found a posting on another forum and it worked. Paragon Drive Backup 8 available free for a while. This is the replacement for their Exact Image 7 program and it creates images similar to Ghost and Acronis.

There are two links needed. One downloads the program in zip format and the other link is for the free registration code.

Hardly know where to begin. I used Paragon Drive Backup 9.5 Free, started it up and let it backup my windows 7 with all my installed apps on it. Something went wrong or else I did something wrong. Now, I only have the drive this software created and my C: drive with windows 7 on it is apparently gone!! Can't find it anywhere and not even a sign of it. Am stuck with the backup made by Paragon. Now my drive C: is this *&&^# Paragon backup and only 160GB free out of 193GB. Where has my 500GB Hitachi HD gone. Oh I know it is still in my computer but it does not show in the Computer icon on my desktop. What confounds this even more is I only had an Acronis Home 11 image file saved on an external HD that is a March image. Afraid I know what you may say about this---nothing to do but re-install. I surely hope someone has a better plan than that. As usual, TIA.
BTW, after the fact but I now learn that my version of Acronis does not support Windows 7. I am using an ISO CD I burned some time ago and that is the way I accessed my Acronis backups on the the external HD. Help--please. That ISO CD may just let me continue using the Acronis version I now have and until I can buy the 2010 version.

Paragon is very good for servers or situations where you have to make frequent backups. The writing of differential backups is extremely fast (in my test just a couple of minutes). But as usual with those advanced programs, you need to do some learning. To purchase it is pretty expensive - $80 last time I looked. So my gaming rig I built about 3 years ago is having some odd problem. It has a 350gb hdd (back up atm) 16 GB of ram and a10 5800 and a 1gb graphics card (about to be upgraded). I had to reinstall my windows 8.1 and I did it at the time I had a 350gb hdd and a 500gb hdd and I had windows installed on the 500 gig. After a while my windows 8.1 would freeze up and I had to restart my computer this is where it gets weird, it wouldn't boot it just stayed on the windows loading screen for hours and then maybe restart. Now its gotten to where it takes about 1 hour and it will black screen for a while until it actually restarts and boots fine. I have tried everything to fix it but to no avail. Is it hard drive related or os related or maybe something else? Please help

A:extremely long boot times?

Disconnect the secondary HDD and test.

Also, you can test both HDD's using the drive manufacturers disk tools.

Hi! Let me start off by saying that I've already scanned numerous times for spyware and virii, and my computer is clean.

Basically, overnight, my Windows XP startup times have gone down the toilet (I'm talking 2-3 minutes at least, if not more). I've run a Bootvis scan, and the problem seems to come from Logon+serv taking some 130 seconds or so to start, and during this time, everything else seems to grind to a halt... so I figure that's the problem.

I have tried rebooting with my network cards disabled, but the problem seems to persist.

Once the startup does finish, everything runs extremely smoothly, including the shutdown.

Searching on Google only seems to yield generic "tweak Windows XP websites." So... I would really appreciate any insight into the problem, other than a fresh install of Windows. :P

Thank you!

First I would like to say that I have never posted to a forum before, so please be patient with any 'newbie' mistakes I might make. Secondly, and most importantly, the problem:For months now I have been experiencing a lot of odd behavior. When I boot up, whether it is from scratch, hibernation, or standby, It may take up to 5 minutes to get to the log on screen. A lot of times though, 40% of the time or so, it will just freeze with a blank screen; never even achieving the windows loading screen. This has become very infuriating, as the only way to get anywhere is to shut it off the hard way (pressing and holding the power button for 5 seconds) and trying again. I run a HP Pavalion dv4000, all stock. It's less than a year old. Here's what I've tried thus far:I have been runing Norton Antivirus regularly, Ad-aware, AVG Root kit, Spybot S&D, and ccleaner (always creating a restore point and never having to use it) for years. I have tried scans in both regular and safe mode and I have tried doing everything with the system restore disabled; still the same problem. Truth be told, I'm starting to think it isn't malware at all, which isn't a fun idea. I tried doing some research with the startup programs from the db here at BC and stopped a couple of the unnecessary processes, which helped some, but didn't rectify the situation. Any help would be appreciated. Here's my current HTJ log. Also, if someone is able to help me out, I am very interested in learning why cert... Read more

Found this while searching for utilities. Paragon has 49 days left on it's Backup and Recovery package. It has the backup and restore functions as well as a file transfer utility which showed all my devices right off and ready to move files around. I believe it also supports NAS. It has the rescue kit as part of the package. It will make a Linux or WinPE recovery media.

https://www.paragon-software.com/home/brh/download.html

Also there is a Recovery Kit available as a standalone package. It builds the media and has a backup and restore and other functions on the media.

I built a recovery WinPE with the in 64bit mode for EFI and it did boot in secure mode from a usb. For some newer computers, if you have no backup solution, this is one to try.

Paragon Drive Backup 8.51 Personal Edition

I have a old backup made in XP on a stationary computer. Now im restoring it on my laptop with Vista on the D: drive. It started after the reeboot and have now been running for more than 20 hours - and still running. The backupfile was about 50GB. How long time will it take to restore????

I have seen severel pictures, movies, documents and temp. internetfiles running, but that was hours ago. My labtop have 3GB RAM, 2,000 HZ and there was about 73GB avalible on the D: drive.
There is no progress at all in the timelines for either Suboperation, Run schript or Overall progress.

A:Paragon - long time to restore

That is a fairly old program .

Depending on the speed of your pc - 50gb would could take up to 90 mins. to restore with the modern Paragon apps.

Is the partition you are restoring to smaller than the original ?

You might try stopping the restore.

Run checkdisk on the drive.

See if all the data has been restored - it may be - perhaps Paragon is hanging on a bad sector.

Otherwise , try the Paragon Backup & Recovery 10 Free Edition

It is compatible with prior arc folders.

Try verifying the arc - and / or restoring it with B&R 10.

B&R10 also lets you restore individual files and folders from the same restore wizard - if you already have most of them restored - try getting the last few with that.

If you need to start the entire restore process again - try using the B&R10 boot disc.

When going to My Books EH and clicking on a specific file, in fact all files, it goes to Windows Cannot open this file and gives me two choices to use the web to find program to open or use a program listed on my computer to find the correct program to open it.
What is your recommendation?
I have previously down a backup from Vista Home Premium tp My Books EH and don't have any problem opening and viewing these back up files. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for getting me this far.....just a few more posts and I will be there!

You have to access the files through Paragon Backup. I haven't installed that yet, so don't know if you can select individual files to restore, but the help files for PB should help you there. There should also be an option to create a recovery disk of some kind.

There is also a Registry Editor and bcd corrector. These two only seem to work on Vista - but will do no harm to 7 - it just doesn't get recognised.

It is an .iso that burns itself to cd.

Definitely worth getting for disaster recovery.

Great catch! richc46

Now with that along with the Acronis True Image(for WD drives free version) along with the full retail version of the same I can make some comparisons. The initial backup using the custom option of selecting the host drive and where to store the image was started following the installation and system restart required.

Note it will immediately ask for a super large external drive when first starting it up to back up all internal drives installed in one super large backup. Simply close that out for selecting one or more drives depending on how many you have by leaving them checked off and unchecking any not to be included.

This puzzles me. I just did a backup of my HD with Paragon. Now here is my question.
What good is it if the computer is completely hosed and won't even boot up?
What am I missing here? I am thinking that when the Exterior hd is plugged in
I will be able to use Paragon to do a restore.

A:Solved: Paragon backup

Well I will reply to my own post. I found the following but don't know what the h**l it means.
Anyone care to explain this?

In the event of an unbootable system, Drive Backup includes an advanced recovery CD to boot from and access backup images locally or via the network.

Never mind. I found out how to do it in the help file where I should have went in the first place.

I think Paragon offers creating Bootable Recovery CD/DVD or USB flash drive
So create it.

And when your system fails you can just boot from that CD and recover your PC.

This morning I have being practising with Paragon Backup and Recovery 2010 and I'm very pleased with it, you can burn a recovery bootable CD that works out side your OS to reinstall your complete OS from a backup archive. Paragon Backup and Recovery 2010 can also test your backup archive for integrity. I am looking forward to using this software on my new external hard drive after I have formatted it to NTFS.

I was trying to run Paragon backup the other day to back up my OS like I've done many times with it before. Now all of a sudden I'm getting this error message:

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

A:Getting an error when trying to run Paragon Backup, please help.

I had that happen to me. I discovered it usually meant your hard drive has bad blocks. I fixed it by running Seagates Seatools on my HDD. The windows disk check did not see the problem. Seatools found and corrected the error. Barring that, try Paragons own Hot Processing method.

Open Paragon, On top menu Tools> Settings> Hot Processing Options> Click Enable Hot Processing> Switch form Microsoft Volume Shadow Service to Paragon Hot Processing> Click Use Hot Processing only when partition is locked> Ok your way out

Try a backup that way. It will work just the same, and restore fine if needed. As I say, if you want to correct the original problem, you can try chkdsk , but it didn't find anything for me, whereas the Seatools disc did. Also make sure the Volume Shadow Copy service is set to automatic.

Hello:

I have been testing Paragon free and it looks promising. However, a lot of people like me are experiencing problems using the recovery CD Linux based that it is created with the free version of Paragon. It is basically unusable.

Does any one know how to build your bootable CD using WINPE or Linux?
I understand that WINPE is not free and you need to build it from your own windows environment. However, I know people build their own with many different applications. Does anyone have instructions how to do this with WinPe or Linux.

I can buy the paid version and do it. I just want to customize the recovery CD and I am only planning to use Paragon for one function.

thanks

WinPE stands for Windows PreExecution Environment and is part of downloadable Win 7 software, the WAIK (Windows Automated Installation Kit).

Paragon Net Burner-2-0 is a unique utility to ?share? a CD/DVD/BD burner over the network and remotely make a CD/DVD/BD recordable device available for use by other networked computers. It gives users the ability to record CDs/DVDs/BDs without having a local burner device. This solution is extremely helpful for notebook users without CD/DVD/BD burning devices onboard.

Easy-to-use even for inexperienced users.
User-friendly wizards will help you to mount (or remove) a remote optical drive in only a few clicks. Access the mounted drives no differently than your local devices.

Extremely useful for notebooks without optical drive.
Paragon Net Burner is a great solution for notebook users who have no optical drive onboard (subnotebooks, netbooks, ultraportable laptops). Mount a CD/DVD/BD drive located on another machine in your local network and grab, record or master CDs/DVDs/BDs without having these devices locally. Net Burner is must-have for home users who have both subnotebook(s) and PCs ? now you can forget about tiresome transferring of files from one PC to another to burn them. With Net Burner, if you take your subnotebook on a business trip, you can burn CD/DVD/BD discs using another PC.

I have used Acronis for years. But with 7, I'm considering using Paragon.
Have any of you used both? What is the difference?
I mean, Paragon is FREE! It appears to be about the same thing really but free.
Mine is for home use, no server.
One thing I love about Acronis is that you can click the image it has made and it mounts it as a virtual drive. And on that virtual drive you can open and move files to your c drive without restoring the whole c if you want to do it that way. Just move files and folders between real and virtual drives.
Is that possible in Paragon?
Thanks!
Mark

A:Acronis vs Paragon backup software.

Hi there
Acronis runs like greased lightning compared with paragon.
System of Incremental backups seems easier to manage.
Individual file restore can be done even from "Image" backups.

Backups can be made to networked devices .

Paragon *might* have improved since I last tried it -- all I can say that I've been using ACRONIS for at least 5 years now with never a hiccup either.

Acronis will even backup and restore LINUX partitions - and the Universal restore feature means you can restore an image to UNLIKE hardware and load drivers -- I use this quite frequently in creating Virtual Machines from an existing windows image.

For things like backups its worth paying - even though I like using opensource or free software when I can get hold of it.

Just think how much it would cost to replace a music library if you didn't have backup.

I'd go for Acronis. It doesn't cost a fortune -- you can get a free trial to see if you like it anyway.

I think the FREE version of paragon is quite hobbled compared with a paid for version in any case.

Cheers
jimbo

I am experimenting with the 10 Free version of this application and have a question about the proper configuration choices when making an image.

Here is a pic of the ?what to back up? screen in the wizard.

If one wants to back up only the C drive, what are the correct choices?

Local Disk C only?

Or should MBR and/or First Hard Disk Track also be selected?

I made an image and checked Local Disk C, MBR, and First Hard Disk Track, but have not attempted to restore it.

If MBR and/or First Hard Disk Track should be included, I find it curious that those choices are optional in this screen.

Would the proper choices change if it were known that the image would be restored to a different hard drive?

A:Paragon Backup and Recovery Question

If the setup on the different HD is different, as for example you only will have one OS on it and you have 2 OS multibooting on the current drive, you should only save C:

You can save MBR and first track separately.

I would advise against making the Boot Capsule hidden restore partition unless you are prepared to fix your partition table. I had 2 different versions of Paragon Drive Backup hose 2 different versions of Vista when I tried to make the backup capsule.

Also if you have a Raid controller you might want to try the restore. You don't have to put the image back on to test it. Just boot the Rescue CD and enter the restore program. If it doesn't support your Raid controller your video will go crazy and you will have to cycle the power. Regular Sata controller should work ok restoring from a USB external drive.

I used PDBU 8.5 and 9.0 and the free 64 bit edition. I went to Macrium Reflect because the Linux Rescue CD supported my Raid controller directly. Thing is you won't know until you boot the Rescue CD and try it.

My system is getting slow and hangs at times, so I thought maybe a clean reinstall of Win 7 will be the way to go.I have an Acronis Free image on a Seagate ext HD, but I found that I cannot restore from that without using a full paid version of Acronis.

Running Win7 Pro 64-bit on brand new Thinkpad Edge. Installed a Kingston 128GB SSD VNow. I installed off the system restore discs. No problem. System runs great.

I went to setup backup using Acronis TrueImage Home (latest versions 2011 Update 1) I have my SSD partioned into C (OS) and D (Data Files). When I try to make an image backup of C: (and the SYSTEM DRV partition) the system freezes for a moment and then Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) about 1/3 through the backup.

So I tried Paragon Backup. Same thing. But at some point I stopped getting BSOD and starting getting VSS can't read volume data. I tried changing Paragon Hot Swapping Setting to always on per Paragon forum post I saw. No difference.

So then I tried Macrium Reflect. Same thing. BSOD roughly between 1/4 and 1/2 through C-Drive image.

I did notice that it appears if I'm not using the computer the crash doesn't happen so soon but as soon as I start browsing the web a few minutes later I get the BSOD. I don't get the BSOD at any other time, only when backing up the drive.

I went into BIOS and changed SATA from AHCI to Compatibility mode but Windows fails to boot when I try that.

I verified TRIM is active so it knows it is using SSD. Although the C-Drive is showing Defrag option still but I think that is okay.

This is driving me nuts. I need to backup my drive!

A:Cannot Backup SSD Paragon TrueImage Macrium, etc HELP!

Hard to tell. But here are a couple of suggestions:

1. Did you check the alignment of the SSD SSD Alignment
2. Did you run chkdsk /r in case there is any corruption
3. Since you say it occurs when you run other things in the foreground, does it work if you just let it run by itself.
4. Did you try to image the partitions one by one rather than combining them in one run.

Hope you can figure it out. I image SSDs with Macrium all the time and never saw anything alike.

Hi all;
Recently, i have just completed a clean installation of Win 7 and have downloaded all my favourite drivers & software. Hence, i would like to treat this as a "factory/ stock" copy and to create a full system back of everything on my hard disk drive and burn it into a few DVDs. Hopefully, these will be bootable DVDs whereby i just need to boot from these DVDs to recover to my present state should my Hard Disk fails.

Question:
Can i do the above by using Paragon Free Back Up and Recovery 2013? So far, this is what have been done.

Choose option #1 -----> and proceed to burn everything in the Hard Disk.

Then, i just burn this into a few DVDs.

Hence, are these bootable DVDs? Whereby should my HDD fails, then, i can just boot from these DVDs to my present state?

It's not immediately clear what this is for. It isn't just for upgrading to a new o/s .

It has lots of other useful functions.

It consists of Partition Manager (personal edition ), and the Virtualization manager.

Even if you already have the partition manager, it is worth the download for the Virtualization manager.
That includes the Boot Corrector to resolve most common boot problems,
and P2P Adjust Recover the OS startup ability after system migration to a different hardware platform.

Also, unusually for GOTD downloads, Paragon normally let you keep the installer , so as long as you keep a copy of the product key - you can reinstall the product as often as you like.

Like many others I have never been very good at backing up my files until it is too late. Recently I decided that it was time to change. I purchased a 1.5TB hard drive which I partitioned in 3, and attached it to my desktop computer. I also purchased a Linksys wireless router & high speed internet. Both my desktop & laptop were upgraded to Windows 7. I was hoping to find software that would allow me to 'set & forget' the backup proceedure, with my desktop direct to one of the hard drive partitions, and my laptop over the wireless network through a homegroup to a second partition. I first purchased Laplink DiskImage, but ran into problems there. Now I am trying to do the same with Paragon Backup but again had problems when trying to backup from my Laptop over the network. Paragon started ok, but then came back with this..... Hard Disk Management, 0x11025, Unable to write file.
Can anyone shed any light on my problem? FRUSTRATED!!!!

Special Edition of Paragon HDM 2009 on GOTD Today only.

This is a great app. , partitioning and backup all in one program . Particularly useful is the ability to resize Extended partitions.

It is a big download because it includes an excellent bootable disc.

As usual with Paragon , though you have t d/l the app. , and get the product key today - once you have them , you can reinstall as often as you like.
Unzip the large file, run the setup.exe that GOTD wraps it in - then it will extract the actual installer direct to your C drive ( by default - but you can change that).

Copy the installer and your product key somewhere safe - for future use.

It doesn't "officially" support 7 - but I have no trouble running using it on 7 x64. The partitioning rules for Vista and 7 are the same.

The bit that doesn't recognize 7 - therefore won't add it in - is the bcd corrector - which is in the boot corrector module on the bootdisc. You are not likely to use that anyhow.

I?ve already seen Paragon was giving Partition Manager Pro for free for a short while. I?ve downloaded and installed it successfully. Those who missed that day, can get it till October 25.
Here is the link: Paragon Partition Manager 9.5 As I can understand, they?ve just opened freeware downloads page. And sometimes commercial software will appear there for free. Very friendly I think for me it?s just like I earn 80 bucks for nothing (professional version of Partition Manager 10 costs $79.95)

So, what do we have here (taken from Partition Manager 10 site, but it works for 9.5):
Advanced Partitioning Operations: Enlarge NTFS partitions without rebooting Windows or interrupting your work, repartition hard disks without data loss, redistribute free space between partitions, merge two partitions to one etc.
Apple? BootCamp Support: Redistribute unused space between Mac? OS X and Windows partitions (great for me!)
Initial Backup Facility
Safe Defragmentation Mode
Etc.
Full feature list is here . The difference is that 9.5 doesn?t support Windows 7.
The program runs on Windows 2000, XP and Vista (32 or 64 bit).
And Paragon provides user support only for the promo period. And only on Twitter . No WinPE included.
You will need to input your email on registration page to get a free serial ? that is your only payment for the soft.

A:Paragon Partition Manager 9.5 Professional Free download

The difference is that 9.5 doesn’t support Windows 7.

Actually - they don't claim it - but it does support Windows 7.

I have been using for a while on my 7 x64 - it works perfectly.

It is exactly the same build as the PM10

The only you don't get - is the WinPE disc and Adaptive restore feature. Run off the bootable Linux/dos cd from within the program to get it in bootable form.

Terriffic opportunity to get a great piece of software - Paragon are the best in Hard Disk Management.

I have converted to Windows 7 from XP and already know I will miss the "repair/install" or "in place upgrade" feature of Windows XP. Under XP I could replace my motherboard/Processor and run the "repair install" from the XP CD and have the new mother board boot and run XP with no problem. All the installed programs, such as Office and Firefox were still there and functional. Under Win 7 they do not get carried over to the new MB computer according to post here and elsewhere and will have to be reinstalled. Under XP, I did have to reactivate with a 'phone call to MS but that was no big deal.

As I understand it, Paragon's Drive Backup Professional 10's P2P Adjust feature will allow me install a new MB or other major hardware and restore EVERYTHING from a Paragon backup to the modified computer without having to reinstall my programs.

Is this correct?

Hi, I?m about to commite suicide so I just wanted to make a final query before I do it.

I have a 320 GB western digital HD, it has windows 7 (x64) in one partition and data in the other.
I used paragon partiton manager to redistribute the free space (don?t ask me why didn?t I use the W7 features please). It did, but the partition with all the data was "not formatted". It showed the exact used and free space (so no data loss) but I couldn?t have acces to it. I manged to convert it to NTFS... still showed the right used and free space, but no luck having acces to the files.

So I used the W7 function to check the disk... and after it finishes it the partition with the data is empty, the OS partition is intact, but the other one is empty.

I tried everything, so I?m not actually asking for a solution, my question is:
Given the fact that I haven?t erased the partition or deteled it or have done anything other than redistribute the free space... will a professional HD recovery be able to restore the filesystem or the files?

Thanks in advance.

A:EMpty partition after redistributing free space with paragon manager

Use free Partition Wizard bootable CD which has helped with hundreds of complicated partitioning operations here without a single failure. Partition Wizard

First from the Wizards tab, run Partition Recovery Wizard to see what it finds. When you identify the lost partition by size and space usage, tick the box next to it and restore it.

If this fails, use the Data Recovery Wizard or Recuva data Recovery software.

In the future, always keep your files backed up externally and ask here for exact steps to repartition or "redistribute free space" (whatever that means).

The Dell Splash screen comes up normally. It is the time between it going off and the XP splash screen coming up.

HI. I'm using a vista home basic laptop, and have objectdock, AVG free and Spybot as my preferred background utilities.

However, it's taking my computer more than 6 minutes to startup... is there any utility to SAFELY check and remove any erroneous startup entries that might be slowing down my laptop?

Also, for some particular reason, Spybot keep repeating the same three notifications every startup- something about NeroFilterCheck. The messages just tell me that Spybot has allowed the change of the programs based on my white list- my problem with this is, this notification usually happens only once after I've allowed a change. This three notifications show up every time I start up- is this a bug? or does it mean that changed values are part of the startup ang are changed everytime?

One more gripe- I uninstalled Nero 8 essentials and opted for Nero Micro (didn't need all those software utils), but whenever I see the autoplay dialog box, there are still some options about opening the DVD or Audio cd with Nero Showtime (one of the those utilities that Nero Essentials had but Nero Micro doesn't have, thank God).

A:Extremely long startup. Help, please.

Hi
concerning startups, a good website to check if the process task is need or not and what it is, is www.answersthatwork.com just click on task list and choose the letter the task starts with (some aren't there, to encourage people to buy The Ultimate Troubleshooter). With that you can then use spybot to choose what you want to startup with windows (or you can use msconfig).
(a good way to see the essential processes (the basics) is to check out the processes in Task Manager in Safe Mode.)

Hope that helps. If you're still not confident to disable startup entries, I find The Ultimate Troubleshooter a lot of help (there's a trial version (answers that work website) if you want to check it out).

You can also get a good idea of problem startups (which are often problem shutdowns) by installing Soluto – Anti-Frustration Software which provides a less complicated trace and how to use Soluto to remove unnecessary apps from the boot : Soluto Support

The first day I installed Win8, it was working relatively well. Boot times were about average and everything was running smoothly. After shutting it down and leaving it overnight, waking up the next morning yielded an exceptionally long boot time taking around 30 minutes to cold boot. Restarting immediately afterwards yielded perfectly normal boot times. Again, shutting it down and leaving it overnight resulted in more long boot times. This seems to happen every time I shut down the computer for an extended period of time. Today, I got home from work at around 8PM. Booted up computer and went to do something else expecting long wait times. It is now 10:15PM and it still has not gotten past the splash screen with the Windows 8 logo and the revolving dots. Talked on the phone with tech support for about 3 hours and couldn't come to a conclusion. Booting from optical drive is not possible for whatever reason and the install was from a fresh new install over a newly reformatted hard drive. It's getting to the point where I feel like the only way to resolve this issue is to leave my computer on 24/7 without turning it off so I don't have to deal with this extremely slow boot sequence.

A:Extremely slow boot times

I may have just fixed the issue. Someone enlighten me if I am correct/incorrect. I've had this computer for about 6 years now. I've had to change out the RAM, the thermal compound for my CPU, the hard drive (twice), the PSU, and the NIC so far. Everything else has been reused. One of my two optical drives started failing about 6 months ago.

I was just reflecting on my conversation with the tech support guy from Microsoft and remembered him mentioning something about making sure there were no external hard drives etc. plugged in that could interfere with the boot process. I also read on the forums something along the lines of Win8 will not boot unless all drives can be recognized or something. So I simply unplugged the non-responsive drive and everything seems to boot up fine for now. Then again, this is what I thought twice before (once for updating drivers and the other for disabling hybrid boot) and both times the problem just repeated itself the very next day. I will post back with updates tomorrow after work.
