All Downloaded Apps have an "X" on the tile need repair

Q: All Downloaded Apps have an "X" on the tile need repair

The default metro apps are OK. The store apps that I bought and downloaded from the Microsoft Store have an "X" in the lower right corner of their tile. When I click on the tile, I can go to the store and "repair" the App. How can I do this for all store apps at once, rather than one by one?

Hi guys. I noticed that in Win7, the applications in the new Quick Launch move if you run one of the applications in the "Pinned to Taskbar" section. For example, if I have Windows Explorer and Firefox next to each other and I click to open Windows Explorer, the Firefox icon will slide far to the right so that it's after the Windows Explorer task in the taskbar.

Is there a way to keep the new quicklanuch icons in Win7 in the same place, like WinXP?

Hi all,

Sorry to repeat a question I see a lot of instances of, but none of those seem to be addressing my problem correctly.

I have not done anything new to my computer in recent days, so this problem has caught me off guard (I see most instances of this problem come after upgrading to Windows 7, I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

A:Stuck on "Starting Windows", Repair Shows "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted"

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

3. If neither of those work, its likely that because of the fact that when windows is repairing itself, it is generally putting copies of its system files in the same physical location on your disk. Because your disk is obviously not completely dead, ie....its still loading to the windows 7 startup screen, its just copying files to the bad sectors on your hard drive and gets stuck when loading. This is especially my guess because you said Safe mode is having same problems, even after attempting to repair. In the past, I've tried and salvage a disk by reformatting it and only leaving on partitions which do not contain the bad clusters. This takes some time, and some guess work.....and really this is only a "bandaid" fix because once the disk has bad clusters, its only a matter of time before these things give out. You wouldn't want to trust your important data on it anyways....

I hope this leads you in ... Read more

I've scanned my laptop with SFC four times in this past week, and each scan ended with the same failure to repair specific files. I'm uncertain how to proceed with these corrupted files.

I followed the instructions in the SFC /SCANNOW tutorial; I installed the System Update Readiness Tool (CheckSUR in attachments) after running SFC three times and it managed to find and fix some sort of error. However, the results seem to be the same in the new SFC scan logs.

I also tried obtaining a .iso of Windows 7 home premium from Microsoft's website (Access Denied) to run a repair install, but it will not accept my product key due to it being a pre-installation provided by Samsung.

I do not have a Windows 7 installation disc so I cannot manually replace them like the tutorial suggests.
Also, I don't know if this is relevant or not, but I ran the WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab troubleshooter several times as well (dism.txt is in attachments). Every single time it says that two problems were found:
1. Problems installing recent updates (Not fixed)
2. Service registration is missing or corrupt (Fixed)

Additionally, I've recently noticed that my free hard drive space has been decreasing rapidly. In the past two days, it has decreased by 2 or 3 GB, despite not downloading or installing anything. Is this related to my current problem with the corrupted files or something else? I don't know how to find what's eating up my storage space.

Any advice is appreciated,

I have looked around for help on this issue and havn't been able to find a resolution that works. I think because I havn't been able to find any imformation on my specific issue.

I am one of the most computer literate people I know, so when a co-worker mentioned to me that he was having problems with his computer, I agreed to look at it. His problem was simple, he had a lot of viruses. I have cleared most (however I assume not all) viruses and instinces of spyware. The computer worked fine for a little while while I did some final checks on his computer, then the problems started.
He has a Dell Inspiron 710m Laptop, running Windows XP Pro. (Service tag 8sk8091)
As far as I can tell, he has not added or upgraded it in any way. He only has some basic programs.

I know that the issues might have something to do with his wireless.
He is running the Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG.
The computer is getting stop errors (BSOD)

The first one was called DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Stop: 0x000000D1 amd listed the file w29n51.sys (which upon further study, turned out to be a file related to his wireless.)

I have already updated the drivers and reinstalled the program with the latest versions on the Intel website.

I also noticed (though with not frequent) the stop error with the same name and stop code, but which listed the NDIS.sys file (which upon further study turned out to be a system utility).
and now, I have gotten a stop error of 0x0000000A, (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQU... Read more

I upgraded to the CP a few days ago and just noticed a huge problem. The "Show Desktop" tile that is normally on the start screen be default has gone missing. I can't figure out how I got rid of it in the first place, but is there some way to add it back?

EDIT: I have changed the title to more accurately reflect the problem. A bunch of the features that come with Windows 8 CP (the tablet friendly Settings page, Remote Desktop, the show desktop tile, The Windows Store, etc) all vanished shortly after I installed Windows 8. I tried reinstalling and the same thing happened again. If anyone else is having this issue, let me know.

A:Can't find "show desktop" tile on Metro start screen

Go to the start screen and just type Desktop. The first screen shown below should appear with the Desktop listed. Right click on the desktop icon and re-pin it to your start screen using the option at the bottom of the screen. Despite Win8's report indicating all my programs and hardware would be compatible with the new OS, Outlook stopped sending mail, and Acrobat Distiller would not spool to the printer after my "upgrade" (Microsoft's term, not mine). I tried reinstalling Office and all my Adobe programs, downloading new drivers for my printers, and of course crying ... to no avail. Win8 also wiped out all my previous restore points, so I used its suggested "refresh" function, which "refreshed" nothing and instead UNINSTALLED EVERYTHING EXCEPT WIN8! A:"Refresh" sounded innocuous (like "repair") but ...

Actually I think that Refresh reinstalls Windows 8, preserving many settings and user data and some (all?) Windows Store Apps. Legacy applications (you know, our useful desktop programs) are preserved only if you have made your own image file. And I'm not sure I would trust that. See this article for more info.

You may be able to recover some data using a data recovery program, such as Recuva. Remember that any usage of the system will potentially overwrite more data.

You had lots of data not backed up? Business data? If so, I think that I had better not make any comments.

Installed Win 7 SP1 with media refresh from (X17-58997). Made it a bootable dvd with MS USB/DVD Download Tool. Booted from dvd and used "custom" install option. I did not reformat nor set partitions (this is where I maybe goofed?).

My disk mgmt ended up looking like this:

BUT, I also have a windows.old file which I understand only appears after a repair. Also, I thought System Reserved was supposed to be 100 MB and mine is 350??

So do I have a clean install or a repair install? There have been a couple of glitches (display adapter acting up and WMP initially not playing any files until I reinstalled mf.dll file).

Any comments? Help? Suggestions? Thank you in advance.

A:Confirm "clean" vs "repair" install from .iso?

With Windows.old, doesn't look like a clean install to me.

You didn't have to "format" or "set partitions", but you should have deleted ALL existing partitions on disc 0----if you wanted a clean install. Deleting all partitions turns the entire disc 0 into "unallocated space" and you then install directly to the unallocated space---without directly partitioning it.

Was your E drive disconnected when you did the install to C? E should not be "active".

I know next to nothing about Windows.old--maybe you can just delete it instead of a re-do, but a clean install is not going to have it.

I've seen System Reserved vary in size, but not sure I ever saw 350. But you should have deleted it as well.

Hello to everyone,

I have very annoying problem with Windows 8. The problem is in metro control panel "PC Settings".
I don't know what is the reason for removing all apps control in the Notifications menu.

I had this problem so many times and the only fix for this that I know - is to create a new microsoft account or to do clean install (which I don't like to try those suggestions anymore).

Any other solution mates?

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and was excited to find it as there are a lot of people giving great answers to Windows 10 problems and I sadly ran into one recently. I have had Windows 10 installed for about 4 months now and things have been going decent. A couple of days ago my system received a Windows 10 update that took about 2 hours and looked like it was installing Windows all over again (but it wasn't) and once this happened I couldn't find the Microsoft Edge application and the start button would not work at all. After doing a system restore to a date prior to the update things are back to "normal" except for this one problem.

Currently my start menu does not show any Recently Used or Favorite Apps in it as shown below:

If I select the All apps button it also shows nothing:

I made sure that all of the settings in order to see recently used apps and all my apps are correct as below are my settings:

I have tried a couple of solutions that handled Cortana not searching for programs or "some" apps were missing from all apps but I have yet to find a solution to when absolutely no apps are showing in the start menu. I know the applications still exist on my machine as I use Firefox and Microsoft Word and Outlook plus many more apps but they aren't showing up at all. I am also under a local account instead of my Microsoft account and both have this problem.

Then resorted to restoring from backup (we used MS backup)- was surprisingly straightforward and hassle free.
If you haven't backups and eseutil /p will not run you will need to try a eseutil /r to get the databases into a 'consistent' or clean shutdown state before it will let you run the /p option. Our database was 12Gb and the /p took 8 hours to run. After that you'll need to do an isinteg - but be aware there can be significant data loss.
Good luck. Lots of help here:

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Can't "Get" new apps from App Store. I get the message: "Try that again. Something happened on our end. Waiting a bit might help."
Can get updates for installed apps.
Can download/reinstall "owned apps" that were previously uninstalled.
Can download/install apps which were installed on my other Lumia 640 LTE on Window Phone 8.1. Any "Owned" app seems to be no problem.
This is what I have done so far: Soft reset including removing battery. Hard reset and restore. Reset time zone. Turn on/turn off battery saver. Verified that both of my Lumia 640's are listed under "Devices" in my Microsoft Account.
Hope someone can shed some light on this, and I don't have to wait on a future update to rectify the problem.

I used to be able to access the "Repair your Computer" option when I booted up the install and repair disc (that I originally downloaded from digitalriver since I have an OEM installed version of Windows), but now I get the following error message:

"System Recovery options
This version of system recovery options is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of windows".

I've read another post that says the issue may be the Service Pack 1 download:

"I have heard some people mention that you cannot use the original DVD to recover once "Service Pack 1" is installed but I never tried it for myself. So it is plausible that this is your issue; you may have upgraded to W7 SP1 (part of Windows automatic updates) and the disks were created when you were just W7."

This is the only explanation I can find for my situation.

Has anyone experienced this problem and what is the solution?

I am trying to access the "repair your computer" option to restore a System Image from a backup on an external hard drive because I want to test that it works before I have to use it for real. How ironic that I can't even get access to the option to restore a system image....

My understanding is, if your system has SP-1 installed your Repair Disc must also have SP-1.

So I prompted to install an "important" windows update (I'm running Windows Vista, 32-bit). In the middle of the update, I attempted to minimize the window, and then all hell broke loose...

The screen froze completely, I was unable to shut it down from the start window because the mouse pointer was unresponsive. After waiting almost 30 minutes (each minute hoping it would fix itself, but hey, it's Vista, what was I thinking?), I broke the rule that should never be broken: I held down the power button on my laptop and shut it down manually.

Upon starting up, the screen was black for at least 15 min, in my impatience (because I am an idiot) I manually shut it down again (...stupid, stupid, stupid). I started it up again and I was given an option to Repair my System because the startup wasn't working properly. I chose that option and Startup Repair began...

It began over an hour ago. This time, I decided I would wait and not shut it down... Yet I'm still waiting. Any thoughts of what to do? The warranty is expired and it's a fairly old laptop anyway. I have a better one now, but I'd still like to save the other one. (The one in the infinite loop of Startup Repair is a HP Pavilion dv6000).

I was thinking to manually shutdown again, starting in safe mode, and system restore it myself to yesterday... But will this damage the system more than I already have?

Ok heres the deal.
I crashed my system and have done a clean install. I couldn't find my winxp pro disk so I barrowed my friends. His has SP2 on it. I then found out after installing it, that it wouldn't work with my product key. So i had to go searching for my disk. Thankfully I found it, and did a windows repair to reinstall the system with the new disk.
My disk didn't have SP2 on it.

So I go to windows update to do updates and it trys to install like 80 something updates and everytime it comes back with ": A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed "

I have a feeling that it thinks SP2 is on my system. is there a way to resolve this without having to do another clean install?

A:"A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed"

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Why wouldn't it work with your product key?
It is better to install with SP2 incorporated onto the cd, saves a lot of time. SP2 should have been eliminated while performing the repair install.

You could try the following but you need SP2 installed before installing the updates, the site should have recognized it was not installed. If the following does not help then I suggest you Slipstream Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD and do a clean install using the proper software

Try re-registering the windows update components. This may help fix a corrupt installer

1. Click on Start and Run,
2. Type "REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL" (without quotation marks) and press Enter.
3. Should get the message "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" Click OK.
4. Repeat above for each of the following:

5. Reboot

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

We have a gmail account. We receive lots of emails from a friend whose ISP was recently bought out. Using his former ISP, when he sent an email with an attachment, we'd click on " download", then get the pop-up to "open, save or cancel". We'd then click on "open" and there was the attachment. Now that he's changed over, emails with attachment don't give us the "open" option when we click "download" in the body of the message. He knows even less about "computering" than we do but, since we receive and open email attachments from other people, logic would tell us that something's not set up right on his end. He does say, however, that we and one other of his email friends are the only two that this is happening with; others are able to open his attachments. Does he need to confer with his ISP support people or do we need to make some sort of setting change in gmail? Any advice would be much appreciated.

I am thoroughly stumped on this one. I have a user with a brand new, freshly installed computer running Win7 (Prof, 64bit) and Office Pro 2010 (32bit). The computer is connected to a Win2008 Active Directory with roaming profiles.

When the user downloads a report in .doc format on this computer, every table has a very odd bit of what appears to be scripting code of some type. Here is a sample:
Here is the kicker -
if the user goes to another computer and downloads the .doc file, the code block is not there
if another user logs onto HER computer and downloads the .doc file, the code block is not there
which tells me that the problem is NOT in the document itself, nor is there something wrong with the Office install on her computer.

A:Wierd "script code" in a downloaded .doc file

What are the specs of the other machine? Which service packs of Office?

Off the top of my head you're looking possibly at a failure to copy an excel table over or a vbscript/macro which hasnt/wont run.

Copy the contents from the machine that can see the code into a new .doc file, then open it on the other machine, is it still there?

Do the same the other way around

Hello goldensunshine Welcome to the TSF Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum. I will be assisting you in cleaning up your system.

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

After 3 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

It may be obvious but I need to say it anyway. If your credit card has been compromised then you need to consider every password you use on this computer as being compromised also. That means making sure you get to a clean computer and change them all.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.

I was using the hide update tool from MS; - Its great and works as it should - scanning available updates.

But; I can hide updates that seems very nice, like lots of Intel drivers and other nice to haves. The thing is I can hide them, IE - stop them from being fetched in the main update tool - but the main update tool shows no updates are available, I'm fully updated it seems :|

And it annoys me. I'd like those updates!

Any input?

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

Hello together,

I am new here and I can't find my Question answered for the last three Days now....

I wish to remove from "All Apps" some Programs. I do not wish to uninstall them, but just to remove them from that list.

I found that I can add here X:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu things to autostart, but thats mostly it.

As example, i wish to remove "Steam" folder and Link in the "All Apps" .... but I cannot find anything how to do, besides of a uninstall

Same goes for lots of other stuff I get from Windows as default added... Cortana, Groove-Music, Mail, Contacts, Xbox and what not. I am simply not using all that stuff and it just bothers me that i have to scroll everytime so long to get where i want.

Is there a way, an Program or something that I can hide/remove here all unwanted Links to stuff I do not use at all?

In Win7 I had such a neat and completely clean Startmenu. This Tiles are nice, but I want to have everything clean and the way I want it, and not how the OS is forcing me to have. Like Accesoire... that Point in Win7 really came down to the Stuff i am SOMETIMES using, everything else was removed. IF i need something, i can check where to find that Application via Explorer.... and well, that never happened till now

Any idea how to do that or what Application I can use for a cleanup?

A:Remove/Hide Apps in "All Apps"

Oh damn! ... I think I have found it, by accident

Start -> All Apps -> Folder:AMD Catalyst Control Center -> Right Click on App:AMD Catalyst Control Center -> More -> Open Folder (Can't translate it correctly to English as it is German Language OS) -> VOILA!

X:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Seems like I can move and remove Stuff to get everything sorted out as i need it!

Edit: Maybe not that easy *sigh* removed several things, but the folder/link still exists, but doesn't work anymore and there are not all Apps to find.. like xbox and other System bloated stuff.

Hi everyone, i was posting to another thread in which i was uploading a snip of my desktop that i saved to the downloads folder, and when i clicked on the "Attach Files" tab to browse to the snip there appeared to be lots of stuff in the download folder i had deleted ages ago. I think there are two identical library's in Win 7, but for the life of me i cannot find the other folder. I want to see if the stuff is really there, and if so i wish to delete it. I took another snip so you all can see the stuff in the download folder, which i thought was deleted. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had a few problems, which I hope have been resolved, but I still have two downloaded files which say they are damaged.

In XP using IE, Tools -> Internet Options -> Settings -> View Objects
the following files have the status "damaged:"

Async Downloader Class
cpbrkpie Control

A. Do I fix them? Delete them? Ignore this?
B. What is the likely cause of this? Virus? Worm? Spyware?

When attempting to load a second virus software, the following file was deleted from my Temp Internet Files: C:\Documents&Settings\my name\localSettings\temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ECJHRSQ9 motiveSB.exe
Was this something sinister? It seems to have fixed everything except my mouse (2 of the 5 buttons don't operate as programmed and I'm having no luck finding new drivers for it).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Also, my wireless router is giving me grief and I had to bypass it to get online.

I just tried to install the latest version of SceenHunter Pro from Wisdom Software website. When the download completed, I got a message in the notification bar at the bottom of IE9 that it is not commonly downloaded and could harm my computer. I deleted the download but it's from a reputable company and I didn't get that notification when I downloaded an earlier version a few weeks ago.

Your advice would be much appreciated.

A:"Not commonly downloaded" notification in IE9

There is no right or wrong answer here. The download can be a problem or on the other hand it can just be different.
I would use this software to test the download
VirusTotal - Free Online Virus, Malware and URL Scanner
If negative, I would google the software, if it is a problem many others will make comments.
Then I would ask myself if based upon the facts is the game worth it?
If you decide to download it make a system restore point first as soon as its downloaded make a full anti virus scan. If you do not like the results use System Restore to go back before the download.

I removed the Windows Apps (3D Builder, Groovy etc.) using PowerShell and Remove-AppxPackage / Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage on our Windows 10 machines (64bit, some Home, some Pro) at home.

This worked satisfying enough, but for some (very few) local users the start menu entries for those apps are not removed. I refer to "All Apps" (the A-Z list of all apps).

Situation is like this:
application is removed (checked with Get-Appxpackage in Powershell)start menu still refers to the Windows Apps with the text entry; it does not show the icon, but a coloured rectangle (sized like an icon)application cannot be started through this icon (as it is uninstalled)
(Screenshot shows the Maps (german: Karten) and Contacts (german: Kontakte) "icons")

I checked the usual places:
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\
but of course there are no links to those Windows Apps.

Does anybody have a hint how to remove these orphan "icons" from the start menu (A-Z list)?
What makes Windows show those entries in the start menu's A-Z list?

Thanks for any hint.

Recently I have had a problem on my PC where in the lower third of the left hand of my screen a tooltip keeps popping up. The tooltip says "Display Devices and Installed Apps." This tooltip seems to override everything because if I'm full screen in another application it will still pop up. When I play a fullscreen game it will keep me out into windowed mode and show the tooltip. It's fairly annoying and it even prevents me from clicking on my shortcuts or things on webpages. The thing is, there is nothing there to display that tooltip. I moved all icons away from the area and it still shows up.

Does anyone know why this is occurring and how to stop it from occcurring? At this moment I'm thinking I may have to install a new OS and see if that works.

I was wondering if there was *some* way to launch Modern apps with the "Microsoft Mouse And Keyboard Center", or whether there's a Modern version of "Microsoft Mouse And Keyboard Center" in the works.

Is there some sort of command or something that can be put into the "Open a program, webpage, or file" field?

If nothing else, is there a program that can be launched that can automatically launch a metro app?

A:Launching Modern apps with "Microsoft Mouse And Keyboard Center"....

I was wondering if there was *some* way to launch Modern apps with the "Microsoft Mouse And Keyboard Center"

The only method that I have seen is using macros.  E.g. find the minimal, most reliable method of using the Start Screen to do whatever it is that you want to do via the keyboard, then express that sequence by a macro and assign it to an "unused"
function key.

My modern apps no longer will run in my windows 8.1 Pro laptop.
The two that I use are Microsoft Solitaire Collection and the Weather app.
I don't want to uninstall and reinstall them (also for the umteenth time), because I DO NOT want to lose my Solitaire collection stats, 500 wins out of 500 plays in Freecell.
What to do!
I know it's just a stupid game, but, still, there should be some way to fix this without having to uninstall and reinstall, again!
Or, if there is a way to preserve the stats in an uninstall/reinstall scenario, that would work for me.  In the past, the stats get reset in an uninstall/reinstall of Microsoft Solitaire Collection.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

A:My "Modern" Apps have stopped running for the umteenth time in my Windows 8.1 Pro

The answer turns out to be quite simple.  When I added the "Authenticated Users" user in the security tab for my Users folder, and propagated the changes down through the directory tree, any folder that had the ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES (or
some other metro based user account) user got hosed.  (The ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES user got dropped).
This, combined with the fact that, I guess, the metro apps run under some user other than the logged in user or depend on a software component that does the same, AND that when folder access is denied to the metro app, the program just closes with no error
message, created the problem.
I understand that the metro app programmers are just too cool to need to bother with such error popups ...
Once ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES is added, the metro apps start working again!

Straight to the problem. I have a amd athlon running XP on it and it is hell. I tried to install the new Itunes 7 and was promptly told that i had to install quicktime and that:

The Installation of Itunes did not complete sucessfully. Itunes reqiures Quicktime.

Like that... Short and sweet. So I download Quicktime and i get another error message along the lines of:

Error reading from file C:\Documents and Settings\Patrick\Local Settings\Temp\IXP915.tmp\QuickTime.msi. Verify that the file exists and that you can acess it.

I got basically the same error message when i tried to install Java Runtime environment 2 on my PC. I believe it has something to do with what i can and can't acess on my PC. Help Me please!!!

A:Installing Apps... A headache -> Cant acess "Local Settings/temp..."

Hello Patrick.
First, turn off any real time virus scanning and try again.
An easy way to verify permission to that folder is to open Windows Explorer, browse to C:\Documents And Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Temp. Right click on the folder, and look at the properties. If you can't make sense of them, open the folder and try to copy/paste a small file within it. If you get an error message saying something like "Access is denied, please make sure the disc is not full, or write protected" your problem is related to permissions to that folder. This usually only applies when permissions have been set by a network administrator.
Are you chosing to run, rather than save the file? If so, try saving it somewhere other than your temp folder, then executing it from there.
Another, although more involved, workaround that often helps is to go into the control panel\system and click the advanced tab. Then click Enviornmental Variable. Set your downloaded program files to go to a temporary folder you create on your desktop, and try running the program from there.
Good luck!

Hello Large Brains,

I need some help. I recently installed Windows 8 Customer Preview over (not partitioned ((stupid))) Windows 7.
Everything seemed to work fine in the installation process. I did selected to KEEP my Legacy Software, Files & Settings...

THE PROBLEM is that when Win 8 opens up there is a blank screen. Charms load. Can access Search for Apps, Files, Settings. Search for Files and Settings works but NOTHING comes up for apps. I am forced just to win E myself into the old desktop and not use Metro at all.

I am on my 2nd install and has nothing changed. I did a SFC /SCAN as admin and it procuded some errors and fixed them but nothing has changed.

What do you think is the problem. I know there is a solution without having to REFRESH. That is just silly.

Please Help my friends,

Immediately after purchasing an 8 GB USB flash drive with the intention of running portable applications off it on the various Windows XP machines I have to use, I had installed the Portable Apps Base ( and then through it, several applications, including OpenOffice Portable, Firefox portable and Tucan Portable.

Probably after using the drive on one of my office computers, some files and folders seemed to become corrupted. After trying unsuccessfully to delete mysterious, un-openable files with special characters in their names that appeared seemingly from nowhere, I formated the drive.

After formating, I was able to copy data and music files from my computer's hard drive to the flash drive correctly. However, I am now unable to properly re-install the PortableApps Base program on the flash drive. Thus, the main purpose of buying it is

The PortableApps software does seem to install, but when I double-click on the StartPortableApps.exe icon on the flash drive

Sometimes the message says that only part of the read request could be executed, and sometimes I get "StartPortableApps.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". I got the latter after scanning the drive with an antivirus (no virus detected) and then checking the drive for errors (F -> right clock -> Properties -> Tools -> Error checking).

Last night I started getting a strange issue, and I can't find anything about it on google. When I bring up the start menu, scroll down to the apps menu, and move the mouse at all, it instantly brings me to the desktop where "Asus Installation Wizard" will launch and then immediately tell me that I don't have the supported hardware (even though the Asus Live Update program tells me everything is fine and up to date). I can close it, but it just happens again and again when I visit the apps menu, and ONLY when I visit the apps menu. It doesn't happen on startup or any other time.
Nevermind what the actual program is doing, I can't seem to find out how to stop it from launching. I cannot do anything in the apps menu because of this.
Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.

Real quick. Just installed Win10, and installed all the programs.

So I have a bunch of "New" programs. Is there a quick way to clear New, without having to open every single program?

Can't seem to find an option or anything on google about it.

Also, I go to add more shortcuts to the Start Menu (All Apps List).

I go to both locations here:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu (which goes to C:\Users\[Login]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs)
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

But whenever I copy a Shortcut for this one particular program (HexChat) into those locations, it just pins the shortcut to the tile area of the Start Menu, and not in the All Apps list.

It is actually weird, because the first shortcut I added was added to the All Apps list just fine.

Edit: Seems to be only this one program, HexChat

2 days ago, I used add/remove programs then Norton Removal Tool to remove Norton AV, and replaced it with AVG Free. My PC seemed to work fine until yesterday: upon booting, AVG automatically tried to update and ended up reporting "something bad happened...";

Not sure if AVG issue is relevant but now I CANNOT OPEN FOLDERS or APPS!

Now about 9 times out of 10, when I try to open a file or app, the screen icons and background pic disappear momentarily, and nothing opens. If I manage to open a folder, it seems my PC hangs up similarly at the following task (sometimes I get my RCA Lyra icon suddenly showing up in the toolbar).

BTW I experienced the exact same problem a couple of times before the AVG install but rebooting would always fix the issue. Not anymore!

It took many reboots but I was able to get AdAware to run - found nothing - and Maintenance Mechanic 6 - showed PC Repair is needed but hangs once it gets to reading the disk index. I tried deleting Lyra, but it won't let me (hangs once I manage to open the add/remove program page).

Help! (at very least, I would like to salvage my e-mails, incl. many software registration numbers and passwords, and photographs).

Thank you

I'm running Win7 64bit on a custom PC i built this summer. I am a big gamer and though I have recently acquired a second monitor, I have been experiencing some problems. When I play games (on steam or Games like LoL where it is helpful to have the wiki open while playing) I like to have them full screen covering my larger monitor. I also like to have a couple other programs open on the other monitor (such as Chrome, Spotify, etc...) so I can get things done when I am dead and waiting to respawn. What has been really annoying me is the fact that when I scroll my mouse over to the second monitor it moves over like it should, but then when I click the open tab (Chrome, Spotify, etc..) to change something the full screen tab auto-minimizes it's self. Apart from being very annoying this is bad for me because I need to see the game so i can know when my respawn timer is up. Like I said in the title; is there an option for "Leave fullscreen Apps open while other tabs are active" or a way to do this? I know it might not be possible, but thanks a million for any answers.

I've had windows 10 for several months (previously had windows 7). Up until yesterday, when I clicked on "all apps" an alphabetical list would come up, I'd scroll to what I wanted, and click on it. If there was an item with a sublisting, like Microsoft office a down symbol would appear. Click on that and the sublisting would appear and I could select word, excel, etc. Now when I click on the down symbol it just flips to an up symbol ^ and no sub menu appears. I'd really like to get to excel. This failure to bring up a sub menu happens for every down symbol, not just Microsoft office. What do I do? Try to re-load Windows 10? Uninstall and reinstall Office? Thanks

A:"All Apps" function doesn't work properly

Hi, do you have any idea what happened yesterday? For example, if you look at your update history- did you receive an update?

Do you have System Restore on, and do you have any useful restore points?

Do you use system imaging (Windows Backup and Restore) or disk imaging which we keep strongly recommending here; that means you can restore an image previously created and get your Windows back running as was without technical help - and even recover from a disk failure or an unbootable PC? (e.g. Macrium reflect (free)).

Those could give you ways to recover.

What is your build version? (Windows key + R, winver).

If you haven't started using those vital recovery methods yet, you could try this:

Well, here is a fun one. A coworker spent the entire day getting a Windows 8 machine up and ready for imaging. As part of the process, he went ahead and let it update the metro apps from the store.

Big mistake: Apparently updating Metro apps breaks sysprep;
Sysprep giving "fatal error" -- but *only* after updating Metro apps?

Here is a KB article on the issue;
Removing or Updating Windows 8 built-in Windows Store apps causes Sysprep to fail

It's even being reported that simply "opening" a metro app will cause sysprep to fail on Windows 8;
Techy Geeks Home: SCCM capture of Windows 8 fails during Sysprep stage - Fatal error occurred while trying to sysprep the machine
Needless to say, my coworker was pretty miffed about losing an entire day on this particular issue.

A:Sysprep fails if Metro Apps have been "updated"

Thanks for pointing to the KB article! I've had scenario 3, and ended up reinstalling the OS I had prepared on a VM. The KB article suggests removing all updated apps, so it wouldn't work for my purposes anyway.

I also had a sysprep issue when simply installed an app from the store. But in that case I managed to remove it manually after analyzing the sysprep log.

Hello all, I upgraded to 8.1 earlier this evening and was greeted by an extremely unpleasant error in that all of my Metro apps have now become non-functional, including the Windows Store and the PC Settings apps.

I have spent the last 2 hours trying numerous solutions to the issue, none of which work. The only remaining option seems to be to try "refreshing" my Laptop, but this is not an option as I do not own any Windows 8.1 Installation media. I used the $15 Windows 7 to Windows 8 upgrade offer a few years back, so I don't even have an original Windows 8 CD.

I also really cannot download an ISO as I am currently on satellite internet, it took me nearly two days to download the 8.1 update so I would rather avoid doing that if possible.

I've checked my file permissions, I've tried all of the Powershell commands suggested here and here, none of it has worked. When I attempt to do the powershell commands I get the following error:

I also don't see the choices: "Open new window", "Run as admin", or "Open file location" that I see in an example under that tutorial.

Going to Settings -> System -> Default Apps and trying to change some default app.

Firstly, none of the entries immediately reflect the change of the app. For example, if one changes the default Web Browser from Google Chrome to Edge, visually nothing will change - the corresponding entry on the Default Apps screen will still show Google Chrome. One will have to leave the Default Apps screen and re-enter it again to see the change. Apparently the change sticks, but the GUI for some reason does not update itself right away.

Secondly, trying to change the default Photo Viewer from Photos to Paint also works as above - the GUI does not reflect the change. However, after leaving and re-entering the Default Apps screen, it shows an empty '+' entry for Photo Viewer. The machine continues to use Photos for photos, i.e the change does not stick.

I don't remember having this problem before the Anniversary Update.
