Update April 30 2015 for Alps Pointing Drawing 12C HID Driver.

Dell XPS 13 9Q33 Windows 8.1. Intel I7, 8GB. SSD.

Took me a while to figure this was the culprit. Caused System Service Exception on re-start. No logs available.

My computer takes a good 10 minutes to load up. It gives different messages every time I turn it on. Today the messages are: Alps pointing-device driver has stopped working; and Microsoft windows search Indexer stopped working and was closed?

can anyone tell me how to fix this? Visata is driving me mad!!!!

A:Alps pointing-device Driver has stopped working

Your Alps pointer problem is probably driver related. To fix it:
1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Right click on Computer & choose properties
3. Open Device Manager (Admin password may be required)
4. Under Mice & other pointing devices, right click Alps pointing-device & choose Update driver software
5. Choose Search automatically & it will download and install the latest signed driver from the windows repositories & hopefully that will fix that problem.

good luck, hope this helps

I'd appreciate some help. Ever since the Big Windows 10 update nearly two weeks ago, the automatic updates history shows that Windows is updating and installing the ALPS pointing device driver once a day, nearly every single day. Obviously this is a bug. I don't get any message telling me that the update failed, however. It just seems to mindlessly repeat the operation every day for no good reason. I've searched various help forums and it would seem that it's impossible to disable automatic updates for any single or specific driver, because Windows knows best . I understand that I can simply disable the device and its updates, but I don't want to do that, even though I rarely use the touchpad (I have the touchpad disabled when a USB mouse is plugged in). Also I should point out that this is not interfering with my laptop's performance per se, as far as I can tell. It's just annoying to know that this is happening every day and is a needless bit of activity! Thanks for any help you can give me.

Why is this message coming up? Is there anything I can or should do? (I really don't want to do anything unless necessary)

I have tried everything to solve this, even a clean install but still doesn't work, so here's my issue.

Went to sit down on the couch last night and discovered my touchpad wasn't working, even the software wasn't running, do went straight to device manager, no issues higlighted, but my touchpad that usually shows up as "Alps Pointing Device", was shown as a HID-compliant mouse.

The software and drivers were still installed, so tried to reinstall it, but got the "this device cannot be started. (code 10)" error, but then did show up in device manager as Alps Pointing Device, but obviously with the yellow triangle.

Just had a tinker when I've got home, still to no avail, but did notice this (see attatchment).

I can understand it showing 2 mice, as I use a wired Raptor the majority of the time, but it's showing that I have two keyboards.

Between Saturday and lastnight, the only install I had done was Everest Ultimate Edition, and nothing else had been played with, but the fact it's not working after a reinstall, makes me fear the worst, but at the same time, Windows is registering it as working.

I've tried options in normal mode, safe mode, run as admin, compatibilty mode, and now out of ideas.

Any ideas?

Hi

Bought an Acer laptop last week (running windows 7), and already the touchpad has stopped working. Checked the control panel for any obvious solutions, but everything seemed normal. I later went to the device manager, right-clicked on "alps pointing device" and went for "update driver software." After restarting, it renamed to "PS/2 compatible mouse" and the touchpad just doesn't seemed to be recognized at all now

Any help on this would be appreciated, pretty sick of using my leg as a mouse mat! Thanks

I was about to make a final image of my laptop before doing a fresh installation but the Alps pointing device has stopped working all of a sudden. It was working just fine and the only thing that did was remove all crap from my laptop using a freeware uninstaller called Revo.

The attached image shows what I get in the device manager. When I remove the HID compliant mouse ting (hoping that at the next reboot it will automatically detect my Alps pointing device), the laptop starts, the mouse works but the keyboard does not. Just finished to the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8. The upgrade went surprisingly seamless and except for the long download and installation was a breeze. I have looked everywhere and can't seem to find a Dell (or Alps) Windows 8 driver. I am running a 64 bit processor.

If I can't find a Winows 8 touchpad driver, is it possible to locate a Windows 7 driver and use it. Has anyone been successful doing this. If so, what is the process to install the driver (8 or 7) in Windows 8.

I am fascinated with the process to setup Windows 8 and just as amazed at how it works. It does work much better with my laptop then I thought it would!!!

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

I just this morning installed my drawing tablet on this computer and I got this error about 5 minutes into using it. That's the short story.

The long story, however, is that this is my 13th BSOD since I installed a new HD into this laptop and reinstalled the version of Win7 I had. The difference is that this BSOD is the first one I've got that's not a 7A error and that's actually created a dumpfile. It's something of a revelation for me, but it doesn't appear to be at all related to the BSODs I've been suffering to date. Basically, I don't think this means that my old BSODs will suddenly be making dumpfiles for me too. I am curious whether there might be something in the attached dumpfile zip that tells me more than just the basics of what caused this particular BSOD and might help explain my others. That's for someone who know what they're looking at to determine though. For now, it would be helpful to get a solution to this specific BSOD and then I can work on the BSODs that have been bothering me until now.

Here's a link to my original thread addressing all the BSODs I've suffered previously if that info is of interest to anyone and could perhaps help here...

A:microsoft - pointing drawing - microsoft hardware usb mouse download fail.

Hi Alona,
If you receive Windows Update error 80070103 while installing updates, you might be trying to install a driver that is already installed on your computer or a driver that might be less compatible than one you already have installed.

So, if you did not encounter any performance issue about mouse and keyboard before, you can hide these updates and don't install them again.

I have good news for laptop users with built in ALPS Touchpads. Acer/Gateway (same company) have been generous to create a new driver for Windows 8 32/64-bit users.

To make sure that your ALPS Touchpad may be compatible with this new driver for Windows 8, make sure that before upgrading to Windows 8, in Windows 7 open Device Manager, check the "Mice and other pointing devices" category and your Touchpad should be listed as "ALPS Pointing-device".

If it is, then you are a candidate to install the newly released drivers. Click the link for a direct download from Gateway.

The link below is for driver verison 8.100.2020.112 (Windows 8 32/64-bit)

Instructions:

1. Unzip the file.
2. Double-click on setup icon and install.
3. Reboot.

After installation, this new driver adds Windows 8 gestures that are found on Microsoft Surface and other tablets for the TouchPad. There are other features there, but those are up to you to experiment with.

You can access the TouchPad settings by either clicking the TouchPad icon in the taskbar or by going to Mouse Properties in Control Panel.

I have a Lenovo G530 4446-25u. Recently my Windows XP partition became corrupted after a system recovery which forced me to initiate a recovery install. This wiped out the touchpad driver I had installed. So I re-downloaded the package from the Lenovo website which installs the Synaptics Pointing Device software and ALPs Touchpad Driver automatically. The thing is the ALPs Touchpad Driver always fails to install with no indication why. The reason this is annoying is because my touchpad is extremely sensitive and it is always clicking when typing. Without this driver in XP I cannot disable tapping. This has turning into a major issue believe it or not as I use my laptop generally to type papers and take notes during lecture. I've also tried installing the driver in safe mode but I get the same results.

I need a "good' Alps touch pad driver.
Something with similar options such as synaptics....preferably swipe and coast scrolling. All of the Alp drivers I have tried have jumpy scrolling ...jumping a few lines at a time rather than matching actual finger movement.
Since Alps touchpads seem to be gaining popularity with the manufacturers,I am hoping a good driver now exists.

I have found one that didnt jump a few lines{precision scrolling} at the dell site but it didnt have continued scrolling...meaning when your finger reached the bottom corner, scrolling stopped rather than continued until lifted or moved back up.
I would settle for continued scrolling without the jumping of lines{precision scrolling}....but opt for the coasting feature.....So in a nutshell I need precision scrolling..with continued and or coasting scroll options.

If anyone has a good alps driver on their laptop or knows of a good Alps touchpad driver..I need the model number for the unit or the version number of the driver

For about two months now, the touchpad on my Dell Inspiron 1420 has not worked properly. The touchpad does not respond to touch (at all) nor do the buttons work. Additionally, the touchpad driver does not show up in ?Device Manager? at all. The files do still exist under ?Dell Drivers? though and the application can be found under ?programs?.

So far, I have:

-uninstalled and re-installed the touchpad driver (many times). If I remove all files and re-install the drivers, and reboot as instructed by the prompts; the touchpad will usually work until I put the computer to sleep or restart it. Then, once again, no response at all. The icon in the bottom right of the desktop also disappears, as does the driver in ?device manager?. The files still exist though in ?dell drivers? and under ?programs?.

-started the computer in safe mode. The touchpad works fine anytime I am in safe mode.

-disabled all programs (programs that had that option) that run on start up. I did this thinking that a start up program was controlling the touchpad since it starts fine in safe mode. The Alps driver (for the touchpad) that should appear under start up programs does not and I have never disabled it when it did show up. Stopping all programs that run at start up did nothing to fix the touchpad.

-I run AVG anti-virus software every day and have run Ad-Aware antispyware multiple times but this seems to have no effect on the touchpad problem.

Today I signed-in and requested to update to the new windows 8.1 version. Upon completion and restart of my laptop,
I keep getting this warning box message. "ALPS driver has found IOCTL - error:320".
Click ok and message box goes away, but keeps displaying every attempt I log in.

How can I fix this problem?
Is there some new Alps driver I need to download?
Never had this problem before I applied 8.1 updates.
Thanks.
TC.

A:Annoying ALPS driver error message.

You should be able to go to the Dell Support site for this laptop and download the ALPS driver.

If you have updated to 8.1, there may not be an ALPS driver for it yet, try the one for Windows 8. This is for 8.1

Driver Details | Dell US
If you go to Dell Support on your laptop, you can use the Auto Detect laptop, it will shunt you to the proper page to download drivers. If you have 8.1 it may give you a page with no drivers, in that case you will have to change the OS to Windows 8. But I just checked, they have 8.1 drivers.

Hi, I would like to ask how to change a function assigned to a gesture (e.g. to a 3-finger flick navigation). After the recent APLS driver update it has changed from "back/forward" to "task switch" and I'd like to change it back (w/o reverting the driver, of course). Also applies to other gestures, like e.g. 2-finger tap would be nice to perform a middle button click for me.

I don't see a way to change this from the (IMO bad) driver advanced settings UI, unless purely experimenting with registry settings. I'm not against a registry manual edit, some details on what and where to change would however be appreciated.

Thanks.

I just bought a HP Pavillion dv6000. I am trying to enable the scroll on the touch pad. When I go to the control panel to mouse a message come up stating: UNABLE TO CONNECT TO THE SYNAPTICS POINTING DEVICE DRIVER. Can someone tell what I need to do to connect.

A:Synaptics Pointing Device Driver

Sound like the driver may not be properly installed. First check Device Manager to see if it's working OK (Start...Run...type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter. See if the device has a red x or yellow ! by it.

You can go to the HP site and download updated drivers for the touchpad if need be.

Then, check in Control Panel for the Mouse or Pointing Device option - then open it to see if the rest of the software is functioning correctly.

Finally, ensure that any switches that may enable this are turned on (there may not be a switch - I'm unsure about HP laptops). But I had a similar problem with a touchpad that took 2 hours to solve - and all it was was that the switch was off!

G'day,

I have an issue with one part of the Personalize setup, that I cannot resolve. Some time ago [I don't know how or when], the touch-pad on my Laptop became 'inactive'....I can't use it. The device shows up in all the right places as being OK, but I have been unable to find a locale where I can re-activate it.

When in Personalize, I click on to the Mouse settings section, I get this attached error message. The window for changing settings for my wireless mouse appears, once I have checked out the OK. Any thoughts?

And the Solution was?

.....right in front of my rather large proboscis! Plain bloody common sense..

First. Go to; Control Panel>Programs and Features[Classic View]>Synaptics Pointing Device Driver[Right click]>Uninstall.

Second. Go to; http://www.synaptics.com/ >Support and Driver Downloads>Drivers><Select your system>Run or Save etc.

That's it! No sweat!

And the second part is; Read your PC or Notebook User Guide!

After doing the above, the Touchpad was still not working. So today, I decided to go back to basics and consult my Acer Aspire User Guide......the solution at last!Somewhere in the mists of time, Fossilised had turned the thing OFF!

My system has the function where the Touchpad can be activated or disabled, by use of Hotkeys.

Hot Keys> Touchpad Toggler> press keys, <Fn>+<F7>, and presto! You can now turn your Touchpad on and off at will.

I'm off now to buy a new used b... Read more

The pointing device in question is the touchpad and the left and right clicking buttons on your laptop so it's probably better to go to the manufacturer's site and find the right driver.

A:synaptics pointing device driver?

The pointing device driver...allows notebook users to use that small area on the laptop...in the same way that some use a mouse.

Me, I prefer a mouse. Sooo...if I remove mine from my laptop, there's no impact. If I used that area on the laptop, I would not remove the drivers for it, unless I thought that the drivers were damaged and needed to be replaced.

Chances are, replacement drivers are available for download at the website of the laptop manufacturer.

Hi there, new user here.

My Synaptics Pointing Device Driver is malfunctioning and I need to uninstall it. However, when I try to do so I get an error message telling me I must be an administrator to do so and to "please log off and log back on as administrator". I am already the administrator of my user account, but after some googling I found out I could enable a "true" administrator account of Windows 8.1 by doing
Code:
net user administrator /active:yes

and logging on to the now unlocked "true" administrator account.
After doing this I still get the same error. I've tried running control.exe as administrator but no luck there either. I've tried reinstalling the driver as well, which completes without errors, but nothing changes. Any help here?

I'm puzzled as to how it's even possible to create a third party application that defies the highest administrative level of windows 8.1. It seems like malware pushers should take some pointers from synaptics...

A:Uninstalling Synaptics Pointing Device Driver

That's not normal. I installed and then uninstalled the Synaptics driver on my wife's Acer Windows 8.1 laptop. It turned out it has an ELANTECH touchpad, not Synaptics. What ever is going on may be why its malfunctioning.

When I sat down at my creaky old XP machine this morning, I discovered that the scrolling feature on the touchpad no longer worked. Previously, I could drag my finger along the left edge of the touchpad to scroll  a window, All of the rest of the touchpad functions are working.

I opened the Control Panel and then the Mouse applet. I got the message in the title:

Unable to connect to Synaptics Pointing Device Driver

The actual pop-up is in the attached screen shot.

I think the Synaptics applet that runs in the background somehow got disabled.

Can anyone help me get it reenabled?

A:Unable to connect to Synaptics Pointing Device Driver

The problem seems to have fixed itself. I just had to reboot after a software upgrade. When the machine came back up, the Synaptics applet was running again and the scroll feature is working. I had tried a reboot previously to try and fix the problem without success so I don't know what was different this time. Random gremlins.

Hey guys,
I'm having problems with the Synpatics Touchpad driver. When I install it, it works great (except for the left-edge-swipe but that's a known problem) but after some time using it, I will eventually get this error. Every single time I installed this driver, I get the error a few days later. When I choose to uninstall it and reboot, my touchpad and keyboard don't work so it uninstalled the whole driver and didn't even use generic Windows 8 touchpad drivers. Then I have to plug in an external mouse for me to be able to reinstall the driver from my desktop. Then I reboot and everything works again but eventually I will get the error again. Now I got the error again and I'm sick of it! Is there a way to fix it? I downloaded the driver from here Drivers | Synaptics and I choose the first one for Windows 8. I know that using HP drivers for my laptop (HP Pavilion DV7-1130eg) could be a better option but they are from 2009 or so, and they don't have the edge swipe gestures for Windows 8 (that lower the pain of the UI-formely-known-as-metro lol). I tryed to let Windows "update" the driver from the device manager (although I knew I was using the latest one) and it downgraded it to a 2011 driver. If I didn't want it, uninstalled and installed the newest one, it was the new one the first time I open it, and the second time I opened it, it reverted back to the 2011 driver (I had BSoD problems in that time that were caused be someting else, so I reinstalled whole Windows... I need help with this please, I'm not really an expert in technology, so I think I may have done something wrong.

So here's what happened:

I got tired of my laptop's shutdown being a bit slow, so I went to figure out how to solve it. A forum stated to use the Msconfig' option which only shut down all the drivers when I used basic mode. When I activated normal mode again, everything was fine.

So I decided to see if I could change the mouse pointing, and I get a message saying the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver is not connected and the icon that appears on the windows 7 tray is gone.

Did the driver become removed during that incident or?

If not, download the latest driver for your touchpad from here.
To get to the download select your OS (Windows 7 32-bit) --> click the plus next to Touchpad --> download the first version (v15.3.6.0 - Synaptics Touchpad Driver)

I bought an Asus K53S laptop about 4 months ago and recently I went to msconfig and disabled some startup programes. One of them was the Synaptics Pointing Device driver. I then enabled it back again and now it won't run in startup eventhough it is marked in msconfig. I have to manually start it in my own by going to Control Panel>Devices and Printers>Mouse Settings in order to the icon appear in the taskbar.

I would be extremely appreciated if anyone could help me with this problem.

You don't need half of that stuff running in the background. take the checkmark back out of the synaptics driver in msconfig.

have you checked to see if the touchpad drivers are in device manager.
also if you type mouse in the start search then click the result, there may be a device settings tab that allows you to disable the touchpad when a mouse is plugged in.

Hi, I am another victim of BSOD. I've spent months on this and at many times thought I solved it.

Here is my PC Spec:

Pentium 4 (2.67 GHz)
1.5 GB RAM (2 Chips)
Nvidia Geforce 6200 (512 MB) Graphic Card
Windows XP Home with SP3
Free AVG 9.0 AntiVirus
Default Windows Firewall

My Story:
This started like 5 months ago, I thought it might be the RAM because I found that one of my chips was faulty and was not operating on its own, so I replaced it with a new 1 GB Chip. This didn't help, it kept going blue, then the power (240W) supply burned out, so replaced that with a 420W one, thought that this must've been it, but no that wasn't it either.

Then I formatted the PC and reinstalled everything, all drivers making sure all are there and they the lastest, but the damn thing still goes blue. And when typing this for the frist time my PC went blue twice in 5 minutes with 2 different messages.

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me with this.

Thanks

Hi everyone, I've been having trouble with one of my computers recently, and after trying the stuff I know, I thought it would be good to come to the great people at techguy.

So, randomly, one of my computer starting crashing getting BSOD's. For a while the error code I was getting was 7F, telling me ntkrpamp.exe was at fault. Later on I got some 50 and 7E codes. Some of which pointed to memory corruption, other seemed to point to random applications.

On some of the crash dumps I analyzed, The crash happened while trying to dereference a NULL pointer or reading from a bad memory address. I compared these, and the bad address was at the same spot, and on other at around the same spot. So naturally I thought this looked like a RAM issue.

I ran memtest86+, It came back with no errors. I have updated my video card driver, and disabled all non-microsoft driver from msconfig. I ran a scan with malwarebytes in regular and safemode.

I'm really at a loss on what to do right now. I know that faulty RAM can pass memtest86+, so I'm currently testing the RAM one module at a time by running memtest, taking out that module and putting in the next module.

Can anyone recommend something? Thanks.

I'm attaching the minidump files in case anyone is nice enough to help and wants to look them over for him/herself. It's about 1.5MB worth.

Hello, for the past couple of weeks, I've been having BSOD crashes at least once every week. Sometimes while using my computer, sometimes while it's idle. The latest one happened a few minutes ago, which is why I'm here. I downloaded a program called Blue Screen View, and EACH AND EVERY BSOD point to a file called ntoskrnl.exe.

The two main errors I've been getting are "IRQL not less or equal" and "memory management". However, the one a few minutes ago stated "Pool Corruption in File Area", once again pointing to ntoskrnl.exe as the cause in BlueScreenView.exe.

Now, I'm beginning to suspect this is my RAM going bad. I say this because I remember when I upgraded to my RAM to 8 GB this past August, I had bought Patriot brand RAM sticks, but I should've read the reviews BEFORE buying it because lots of people were complaining of Patriot RAM failing. Can anyone offer any help to determine what I need to do? I know I need run memtest, and I will hopefully get a chance to do so soon.

I'm running on 8 GB RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, Intel Core 2 Duo on a Dell Studio 540 desktop. Windows Vista was originally installed on this system, but I bought and installed Windows 7 over it in January '11. In August '11, I reinstalled as 64 bit when I upgraded my RAM. The system was purchased from Dell in December 2008.

Attached in one file are two DMP files from the two latest BSODs.

They seem pretty random but they always point to ntoskrnl.exe as the culprit, tho afaik that happens when the OS has no idea what caused the crash.

What I did so far:

Tested memory with Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Tested memory with memtest86 overnight, 6 passes
Swapped the memory modules and inserted them on different slots
Tested system stability with Prime95 Blend for 2h
Tested VGA card with Furmark for 30min
Tested with Windows Driver Verifier
Tested system files with SFC
Tested with CHKDSK
Tested HD with WD Diagnostics
Reinstalled all drivers with latest WHQL versions or BETA
Updated BIOS and reflashed it just in case
Reinstalled Windows
Absolutely every test above ran clean and had no errors whatsoever.

The important thing to mention is that I never got a single BSOD while gaming or running resource intensive applications, it only happens when I'm browsing or the computer is idle.

So anyone has any suggestions of what might cause this or how to fix this? Thank you.

Hi.

Few weeks ago I started getting BSODs. I've never had them before. I did not install any new hardware. The only updates that I recall were VMWare Client and regular Windows updates.

After I run uTorrent I get BSOD pointing to NETIO.sys. I tried everything, I even re-installed Windows.

After that I ran driver checker and if I run it I also encounter BSOD while launching VMWare Client (two of my dumps are pointing to vmware).

I am quite frankly running out of ideas and I would appreciate a little bit of help. Dumps and system health files are attached.

The vast majority of these do point to NETIO.sys with only the two driver verifier ones Related to vmwvusb.sys VMware View Generic USB Driver (32-bit) from VMware, Inc..

I would do three things

Hello,

I've been having some difficulty with a new computer. The BSoD seem to be kind of random to me...sometimes it happens while playing graphic intensive video games (FFXIV/Witcher) other times it seems to happen while streaming movies on firefox.

I've also had some issues with the USB ports on the front of the computer. One such example of the issues I'm having with that would be, the other day my sister plugged her smart phone into one of the USB drives to charge it. I lost all display (displaying on my vizo smart tv via hdmi) and the TV said "No signal". The computer was still running but I was unable to regain my display. I tried unplugging things and turning the tv on/off. I had to manually reset the computer. This has happened more then a few times.

I'm not sure if that is related to my BSOD problem or not. They both seem to be a MB/vid card issue.

I've the attached the suggested zip file, let me know if there is any more information needed.

Thank you

SYTEM SPECS ADD IN
Can we have some system specs please as what you have posted gives us not thatmuch to work with and given there are so many manufacturers of components and configurationsthat do influence what goes on within any given machine and OS.
System Info - See YourSystem Specs
In the dumps there is indeed a graphical problem and I would suggest you uninstall the Catalyst Control Centre first

Now as for the sister I would break it gently to her which is he power charging port is on your machine as there is usually one one for that purpose the others will struggle or not work at all and maybe hence throw your system into the black hole of chaos

Yes, those files are supposed to reside there. Also, 3rd party blue screen crash analysis often blames Windows processes. So does the tool we use, but it provides more information to track down the actual cause, which is why we use it.

Also, the BugCheck codes you are getting are going to blame Windows files since they indicate a Windows process was terminated unexpectedly. These crashes typically indicate a hard disk problem or system corruption.
This could mean hard disk corruption, bad sectors, a failing hard disk, Windows files or registry corruption, viruses, or memory problems. If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.

Run Disk Check with both boxes checked for all HDDs and with Automatically fix file system errors checked for all SSDs. Post back your logs for the checks after finding them using Check Disk (chkdsk) - Read Event Viewer Log (you may need to search for wininit instead of chkdsk).
For any drives that do not give the message:

Hello.

I finally gave up all hope trying to solve my problem by myself.

I just built a new computer early last month and everything was fine til a week later when I started getting very random blue screens mostly blaming ntoskrnl, or other windows services. These blue screens didn't seem to have any real pattern and sometimes occurred when playing games either online of offline or just browsing net or being idle.

I have ran SFC /SCANNOW command twice and nothing has shown up both times.

Also, I used a utility called WhoCrashed to help me analyze minidump files and somehow the SF Diagnostic Tool missed out on one of my dumps which I can't seem to find either. But here's what WhoCrashed says:

For the past two weeks or so I seem to be having a lot of BSOD's randomly on my computer, it can happen while I play, browse, watch, well, it just happens at any given time.

I've ran memtest a few times, no problems came up.
Also scanned my computer a few times, also no viruses found.

I am attaching a rar file with the most recent minidumps, help would be appreciated.

Sorry if my thread isn't specific enough, thanks for any good soul out there who'll help me figure this one out.

4 year old Dell Studio XPS, running Windows 7 Professional.

Today, after no obvious changes (except a reboot) my Dell Studio XPS started blue-screening, with the error "Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed". On reboot there were odd characters across the screen, Windows started to load, then BSOD again.

After much head-banging and time-wasting I read the BSOD message! I was able to boot into Safe Mode.

Uninstalling the driver for my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 allows me to boot normally, but obviously with crap graphics.

I have tried reinstalling the drivers from the Dell site, and those from the AMD site, but both cause the same BSOD.

Are there other drivers I can use?

But my mousepad isn't disabled: it continues to work just fine. I LiveUpdated Norton and ran all the scans, updated XP, and downloaded Widestep Elite Antikeylogger. Things were OK for a few hours, but then the "disabled" prompt and funky cursor for a few seconds.

Over the past day or so the window would pop up within ten or so minutes of a startup, so making it go away for several hours was better than what I had, but still. . .

I removed the drivers for my Gyration keyboard and mouse. While everything was loading at the next startup a box from the antikeylogger popped up and it said:
Name: unknown module
Type: Files and processes monitoring
Home Page: No information
The "warning level" was pegged.

But I allowed it for one session just to see if the problem was the Gyration software. Sure enough, an hour or two later I got what I suppose to be an attack.

I re-started, and this time the keylogger showed two more prompts in addition to the one I cited above. One said "Keyboard monitoring" and the other one I don't remember exactly but it sounded like part of a keylogger malware app.

This problem with my laptop continues.

I ran the Secunia program, removed all the old versions and installed the latest ones, and I'm still getting this prompt about my touchpad. Only happens when I'm online and it usually takes 10 or 20 minutes after startup b4 it happens.

I'm worried about two things: the possibility my laptop is under attack and that I've said something wrong in this forum and that that accounts for the lack of any response to my post. The latter is of greater concern to me.

Is this concern well-founded?

I've been away from home and I don't have my laptop with me, but I was reading a blog this morning and I came across the word troll. Never had seen it used like that b4, did a little research. I have zero information about the thinking which informs the response to this post, but the troll thing reminded me of that "0" in the "Replies" column. I always tell people they should never deny things they haven't been charged with, so I'll say this: I'm a novice user who thinks his computer has been attacked and wants some advice about dealing with it. That's it.

My beloved xps 12 has an issue where after heavy wifi usage (Netflix or streaming games over steam) it will fail after a while. Sometimes an hour or two, sometimes  a bit less. The first thing that happens is that it looses internetconnectivity. Then it seems to fail and "go offline". I see the wifi icon change to a lan icon...
Rebooting will cause the machine to hang, and I have to hold the power button down so turns off manually.
After the powercycle it works like it should again.

seems to me that the hardware is failing. I have the newest drivers.

This problem started this summer.

Any tips?

We have two XPS12 9Q33 units that have the BIOS Admin password set, but no one left in the department knows the password. We've tried all the normal variants to no avail.
Yesterday I spoke with out of warranty support, and the gentleman was unable to help as from his documentation this computer has a Phoenix BIOS, while in reality all the units we have are AMI BIOS. We have 12 of these units, but only these two have the admin password set.
Does anyone know of a way to reset the BIOS ADMIN password? Not the system password, we have that, it's specifically the ADMIN password. Support yesterday was very frustrating in trying to get them to simply listen to what our problem was so I gave up on that and came here.

Recent versions of the DW1560 driver have made my system completely unstable due to recurring BSODs which note one of three errors: bcmwl63a.sys, fault in page file, memory management.
I've run checkdisk and Dell's PC doctor app and neither shows an error, I've also done a clean reinstall of Windows 10. Only going back to the 2014 W8.1 driver has worked. Unfortunately, both Dell update and Windows update will continue to attempt to install the new unstable drivers.
This appears to be a widespread issue (see google results for "dell bcmwl63a.sys windows 10". Posting here in the hope of getting an update on this issue, or any info on a better workaround.

Hi,
I previously upgraded from Windows 8.1 to 10, but the Anniversary Update will not complete properly and I've been stuck on v1511 for a few months now.
The installation goes through most of the steps but on reboot it just goes to a black screen with the dell logo and the endless spinning dots.  The error message after rolling back is: 0xC1900101 - 0x30017 ("The installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during BOOT operation".
I've tried the following based on other forum posts, unfortunately without success:
1)  Leaving this running overnight.
2)  Unplugging all USB devices.
3)  Installing upgrade from USB drive.
4)  Installing from a clean boot.
5)  Installing with wireless adaptor disabled.
In each case it hangs at the spinning dots.  After a few forced reboots the upgrade rolls back fairly quickly to the previous version.  One thing I haven't tried is a clean install, as if it fails I'll not have anything to roll back to.  Also it's unclear if my existing Windows 10 license will carry over.
Any help appreciated.

A few weeks ago, I developed two problems with my Dell XPS 12 that seem like they may be related, but unfortunately, I haven't been able to solve either.
1) The first issue is that sometimes when I turn on my laptop (this has been progressing to EVERY time), it emits a series of 8 short beeps.  I can then turn it back off and on, and it starts normally.  (Except for today, which took several tries.)  I found that 8 short beeps is the beep code for the LCD screen.  However, I'm not having any screen issues.  I also ran the full diagnostics from Dell support and passed everything, including all LCD tests.
2) The second issue is regarding screen resolution.  Again, not EVERY time, but sometimes after my laptop has been in sleep mode and I "wake" it, the screen has resized from its normal HD (I have it on the recommended screen setting) to a much smaller, square width, resetting all my windows with it.  I can set it back, but it's VERY annoying to keep having to do this!  I have tried a number of fixes I found online, including making register alterations and changing when the laptop sleeps, but none has helped.
I'm by no means a computer expert, but I can find my way around with guidance, and I would appreciate any help with this!!!

Hello!
so I basically just recently got a new laptop and started using it about a week ago but past few days (2-3) i got 3 BSOD already all saying "Driver irql not less or equal." I'm not sure what's causing it but it's making me a bit worried. I really hope i did the dump file thing right. (I have windows 8 btw)

Also, if you don't mind just making your answers a bit more simple and concise because I really don't know much about laptops or these things, basically a noob sorry.

Thanks in advance for your help!

UPDATE:
So I heard there's a problem with a chipset of some sort?

So just tried updating Intel Corporation - Storage Controller - Intel(R) 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller, it has been trying to update since a week ago apparently. For some reason, it keeps failing.
And then I tried going to synaptics drivers, to see if it that will help, but a previous version of the Synaptics Touchpad has already been installed. Should I uninstall to install again from Drivers | Synaptics?

Or i do have some sort of feeling it's because of McAfee because I've looked at forums with the same BSOD error as me and a few said to delete McAfee but I dont understand why and if it applies to myself.

Make sure you have the latest Java installed well, then head on over to this link:

Intel? Driver Update Utility

Let it scan and most likely it will show you updates to install. I am not completely sure (a little rusty doing this but that's ok hah), but perhaps the SMB driver is part of the Intel Chipset Update Utility. (I think so.)

In any case, we at the site and you together will fix this up. Good luck with the above for now.

I do recommend using the McAfee uninstall utility they have on offer, in Safe Mode is best - if issues persist after the above. Then, install Microsoft Security Essentials either permanently or temporarily until you have it all sorted out.

Hello,
I have recently upgraded to windows 10 and everything seems file except one problem I am facing which is the wifi card connectivity issues. My connection to router drops very frequently, curently the generic driver which windows think is appropriate is installed. I wanted to undate that with Dell's driver which I can't find on driver download section. 64 bit WiFi driver is NOT there. 32 Bit driver is but that won't install on my machine.
Can someone from Dell help? either to give me the link for correct driver download or confirm driver is not available in which case I would need to downgrade to windwos 8 as the system is unusable in its current state.

A:Dell Inspiron 15R 7520 SE - Windows 10 64 Bit WiFi Driver not available on Dell Site

Hello,
On the Drivers & Download pages for the Inspiron 15R 7520 there are only 64-bit options for Windows, whether 8.0,8.1, or 10.   So those drivers are the ones for the 64-bit version of Windows 10, as long as you filter the operating system option to Windows 10 64-bit.
The file name may state "Win32" but if you click on the "View Details" link, and then check "Supported Operating Systems" near the bottom of the page you'll find that the driver supports both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
You don't mention which wireless card you have in that system so I can't link directly to the specific driver.  Which card do you have and what error are you getting when trying to install the drvier?
I would also recommend updating the firmware on your router.  Many routers need an update to be able to handle Windows 10 specific drivers and cards reliably.   What router brand and model are you connecting to?  And do you have problems with all routers or just this one.
Lastly, here is a link to the Dell Networking & Wireless Support Center.  You will find a few support articles in there that may be of help to you.
Let me know which card you have and when the last time you updated your router and, if you can't get the connection to work, I'll see what else I can suggest to help you.

Hey all.
I've got a Dell Latitude E6320 where the driver installer for the Dell Wireless 1530 wireless card fails.  I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, the computer boots in UEFI mode, and I've installed all of the drivers according to the Latitude E-Family Re-Image Guide.

A:Windows 10 chipset driver and video card driver for Dell Inspiron 640M - 2006 model

You will not get win 10 video or chipset drivers for the old laptop since they don't exist, so you have to make do with lower resolutions on the new monitor. Touch will not work on the old laptop. Time to upgrade to a new computer!

A:Dell dell inspiron - No USB driver installed

To make sure your Going from SATA to USB, if so, then are you using the USB with + or power port.  Depending on the motherboard.  (had the same issue in the E Series Dells)    Also, SATA does not provide power on its own, it needs to be plugged in, or you need to plug the two cables into two usb ports
the cable for it could be One connector, and two on the other side.  The main cable is the data+power, the other is the extra Power.  USB gives Max 3.3V, SATA usually need 5 or 12V to work.
If all else fails pull your CD drive and connect to that if you can.

I have had BSOD for a while and being super busy I did not have time to look at it and get it fixed. Well Being a computer guy I assumed I could fix it myself. But with tons of research and trying to use every guide I can find I decided to try here(probably should have came here first). Today I started Driver Verifier and having it check all drivers. It crashed a couple times before I realized it was a process I had to stop. I then came here to try and get some help sorting out the driver. Thank you in advance for any and all help anyone provides.

I have found in my startup list something called Alps Electric Co Ltd. I understand that this is a pointing device to do with Windows but don't know more than that. I use a laptop with a separate keyboard and mouse and use Vista SP1. Can I safely disable Alps from my Startup list?

A:Alps Electric Co Ltd

Hi,
I found this at Bleeping Computer:
"Name:AlpsPointFilename:Apoint.exeCommand:Unknown at this time.Description:Touchpad software for laptop PC's. For instance it is found on the Panasonic machines and allows part of the touchpad to be used for document or Web-page scrolling. See if anyone else can advise you further?

I am currently running Windows 7 Pro on my Vostro 2510 Laptop. It's the best deal I ever got, but the touchpad is simply wretched cause its an Alps Touchpad. The drivers are simply abominations. The only gesture my touchpad driver has is Scroll.

So I looked around, and found this newer driver. It had some decent and most basic gestures, and it sufficed for my needs. However, it causes my Aero cursor to freeze up and no longer animate. This usually forces my mind to think my computer has frozen when it has not, very discontenting.

Then I had another Idea, what if there was a way to force Synaptics driver to think my Alps touchpad is a synaptics one so I can get synaptics features?

If anyone get help me fix the error with the new Alps driver or synaptics idea or anything else, I'd appreciate it very much.

Hi, when I tilt my screen forwards and backwards (not really when I rotate it in its frame) I get a flicker and the screen goes black for a second. It feels like it might be a hardware issue - I just wondered if it was common and there was a cheap fix? Or if it is a software issue is there something that can be installed to remedy it?
Thanks!
