Windows 8 Audio suddenly stopped working

Q: Windows 8 Audio suddenly stopped working

I have a dual boot Win 7, Win 8 setup. Suddenly the audio has stopped working on Win 8. (Works fine on Win 7) I checked for driver updates, even "installed" an old driver which didn't actually install. The volume control shows its trying to work, puff of green comes and goes at the bottom of the slider.

If you have had this problem and solved it please let me know. Other suggestions welcome however I've tried "cleaning" for other concerns and that made a real mess of the setups for several programs. I suppose I could do a refresh but that's equivalent to a re-install... what a pain.

A: Windows 8 Audio suddenly stopped working

I guess I looked in the wrong place for answers and they moved my posting to this area. Unfortunately it appears others have the same problem with no solution. I did try updating the video driver along with all available Win 8 updates. Still no audio.

I have all my programs running well on the Win 7 partition so I'm thinking of doing a Refresh. If that "refreshes" back to the original installation I assume the many many updates will be required. Any idea how long that will take?

Hi guys,

I wonder if anyone can help.

My wife was using our PC, playing an online puzzle game, and she muted the sound.
When I came to use the PC myself, I noticed the sound was muted, so I un-muted it, expecting all to be good again, but it wasn't.
No sound at all !
After messing around for quite a while, I tried uninstalling and re-installing the drivers, that hasn't worked.
I've just done a system restore, and that hasn't worked either.
I've run MBAM & Microsoft Security Essentials, and neither has shown any problems.
I'm at a total loss, please help.

Many thanks in advance

My audio has stopped working for Windows and Gaim, but Winamp and various games are still fine. I've reinstalled the drivers many times and uninstalled every possible audio device, but I always end up with the same thing.

In Winamp's WaveOut plugin, the first device is messed up.
In DirectSound everything is fine.
In Windows' sound manager, the preview button is greyed out.
I think this means there is something wrong with my wave settings, I just don't know how to fix it. Hope the pics help, let me know if you need more info.

Both audio playback through the integrated sound card and recording through a USB microphone stopped working suddenly

I cannot play back or record anything

No application software can find the either the sound or recording channels.

In device manager both recording and playback devices are listed, enabled and working properly.

If I launch an audio track the sound bars levels against the device do not move. The speaker next to the clock is present and does not have a red cross through it.

The first thing I did was do a system restore to a couple of days previously when I know it was all working - still nothing.

I have checked the BIOS to make sure audio is enabled and set to automatic - it is.

Cannot be the integrated sound card - Dell XPS 430 - because the separate USB microphone does not work either.

It is like all audio functions have stopped being accessible to software applications, although Windows 7 Ultimate 64 sees them as present, enabled and working.

So Windows sees the audio devices, Windows applications do not.

Any ideas please?

Thanks

Do headphones work?  How about bluetooth?  Bluetooth adapters are pretty cheap, I paid $15 for mine, but I'm told you can get them for as little as $5.  I have a problem with my Toshiba laptop speakers that I've circumvented with bluetooth speakers when home, and headphones when I'm not.

Good luck.

Both audio playback through the integrated sound card, and recording through a USB microphone stopped working suddenly - cannot play back or record anything and no application software can find the audio devices.

The first thing I did was do a system restore to a couple of days previously when it was all working - still nothing. So this eliminates drivers etc being an issue.

I have checked the BIOS to make sure audio is enabled and set to automatic - it is.

The Windows audio manager service is enabled and set to automatic.

Cannot be the integrated sound interface - Dell XPS 430 - because the USB microphone, which is not connected to the sound interface, does not work either.

It is like all audio functions have stopped being accessible to software applications, although Windows 7 Ultimate 64 sees them as present, fully enabled and working.

Any ideas please?

Thanks.

Hello!

The first step here is to go ahead and check the service Windows Audio.

Do you know how to do this?

Windows Audio should be set to
Startup type: Automatic
Make sure it is Started!

I do not know what happened. It just suddenly stopped working one day and now the sound icon in the toolbar has a red "X" on it. When I click on it it runs a trouble shoot which eventually comes up with "ATI High Definition Audio Device has a driver problem." I have tried to go to Realtek and download the "ATI HDMI Audio Device" and run that but it hasn't worked. I also tried to do the driver only download from the website for Windows 7 but that didn't seem to work either. I eventually received a message that stated "Install Realtek HD Audio Diver Failure !! [Error Code : 0x000000FF]." I looked in Windows Update to see if maybe there was a new update for a driver to fix it but it didn't have anything.

I come to you all because it's what I did last time I had an issue and you all were very good to me. You all are a lot more computer savy than I am so you all are able to think of things to solve issues that I never even think about. I really need you alls help. Also, I have heard that this type of information may be important in trying to solve this to by motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-770TA-UD3.

Again, please, any help will be much appreciated. I have tried a lot of things but nothing has worked.

Thanks in advance

A few days ago the sound on my computer stopped working. I just woke up one day and went to play a song in itunes and it wouldn't play. I clicked on volume and checked it. Then clicked on playback devices and it said no jack information. No audio controller installed or something. I went to device manager and tried to reinstall or update drivers. The drivers were moved to unknown with a yellow exclamation point. I tried this to no avail. I tried in safe mode. I tried redownloading drivers from motherboard website ASUS. It keeps telling me Access is Denied (Code 28). A couple of times after restarting it said I needed to Reinstall driver, but when i tried it said the latest driver was already installed. Then it went back to Access denied. I don't have any idea what happened. Can someone please help me.

A few days ago my itunes was working perfectly fine. Then for some reason it stopped starting up.

When I click on the icon my computer shows the hourglass for 2 seconds, as if was going to start working, but then the hourglass disappears and Itunes doesn't open.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I have also tried a system restore, thinking that maybe I deleted some program critical to Itunes opening on accident. Neither of these have worked.

Does anybody know how to fix this?
Anything I should try?

Hello windows gurus.
I believe this is a setting problem, but can't figure it out.
Dell Studio 1749 laptop running win7 pro 64

I was browsing the internet with IE10, had a bunch of other stuff open (xcel, quickbooks, other software).

All of a sudden, I must of hit some kind of key combo, because the scroll wheel on the mouse started zooming in and out the active windows instead of scrolling them up and down. Also IE10 looked different, the tabs on top "dissapeared" until I hovered the mouse up top, and then they popped back down. Kind of like the Dell Dock.

Then when I typed in a key different windows would open. I believe "i" opened IE favorites, and some other keys did different things.

The keyboard did not work in the sense that I could not type in url's into IE, or information into exel cells, notepad, etc.

I clicked around in control pannel thinking somehoe I activated some global stickey keys, but couldn't find anything.

Num lock and caps lock still activate, and if I reboot, I can login into windows with my password, so I know the keyboard is still connected and working.

Device manager says the device is working properly.

Please help?????
Thansk in advance. I know this is something stupid.

Sounds like you hit the F11 button, try hitting again.

You may have an F lock key on the top row somewhere too.

I'm dual booting Windows 10 on one SSD and Windows 7 on the other SSD; motherboard is the ASUS Sabertooth Z170. Secure Boot suddenly stopped working for Windows 7 but not for Windows 10.

Today, on the Windows 7 install, a few updates came through on Windows Update: KB3138901, KB3139923, KB3137061, KB3133977, none of which seem to have anything particularly to do with Secure Boot. After installing them, I rebooted, and it booted up fine.

I then updated Steelseries Engine (for my Steelseries Rival mouse) from 3.6.6 to 3.6.7, then rebooted, and the red alert window came up talking about a Secure Boot violation, unauthorized changes, etc.

Booting up in Safe Mode was not possible, and the Secure Boot setting in the BIOS was greyed out and not changeable in a straightforward manner. I eventually learned how to disable Secure Boot on current motherboards by backing up then deleting the PK Secure Boot Key.

Now that I could boot into Windows 7 again, I uninstalled Steelseries Engine 3.6.7 and installed 3.6.6, then turned Secure Boot back on by restoring the PK key that I had backed up, but Secure Boot still didn't work. I then uninstalled the four KBs and Secure Boot still doesn't work.

I guess I just won't use Secure Boot again until I'm ready to re-install Win7 on that SSD, which I won't do until after the only reason I'm using it now (to run Skyrim, because DirectX9 has a 4GB limit for VRAM usage in Windows 8 and later).

I'm baffled... Read more

A:Secure Boot suddenly stopped working with Windows 7

I'm not sure of your reasoning regarding skyrim, 32-bit DX9 apps/games are limited to 4GBs of VRAM regardless of OS afaik. Also there is a memory mod, that will allow skyrim to use more than that with a modified DX9 .dll, might want to look for that. As far as SecureBoot itself, can't offer much but I would run a malware/rootkit scan just in case. Edit: I'm also pretty sure SecureBoot is Win 8+ only, but if it does work with Win 7 somehow, maybe you just need to re-install the key because maybe one of the updates changed the boot code or whatever it checks. Should be an option like 'install default key' or something in the bios. (I'm assuming Windows loads a new key into the bios when necessary, to be honest I'm not intimately familiar with SecureBoot so this could be completely wrong.)

Hello.

I ask that you please be patient with me, as I am not very knowledgeable where computers are concerned.
So my wireless internet connection has been working completely fine on my Windows 8 laptop up until a couple of days ago. The wireless internet is working for all devices in my home except for the laptop. I am currently typing this on my mobile phone. When I try to diagnose the connection, I get an error message that says, "'Wi-Fi' doesn't have a valid ip configuration". I went into the Administrator Command Prompt and attempted an ipconfig /renew as I have heard this solves the problem, but I receive a message that says, "No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection* 11 while it has its media disconnected."

I have reset the computer, but to no avail. The internet connection icon on my taskbar shows me that I have a strong internet connection, but when I mouse over it, it says, "Unidentified Network. No internet access." I have also tried resetting the router. Any help would be much appreciated.

A:Wireless Internet Connection Suddenly Stopped Working on Windows 8

The Local Area Connection would not interfere with the wireless as that's the Ethernet port. That message is normal.

Go into the Network and Sharing Center, then on the left side in the blue section choose change adapter settings.

Right click on the wireless network icon and choose properties.

Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 and click properties. Make sure both sections are selected for Automatically Obtain IP/DNS address. If you had to change them, click OK then Close. Go back to command prompt and type ipconfig/all and post teh results here.

So suddenly when the my laptop sleeps or turns the screen off,

the audio device gets taken over by some hidden application

or the optional update was just faulty.

I've been experiencing this for two days now. Check the picture for more information

And yes, I have tried every possible solution I can think of

- re-installing the drivers
- disabling then enabling the audio device (which somehow solves it. i wanna know why)
- restarting the laptop (yah solves the problem.)
- etc

except for buying a new laptop.

So maybe anyone can help me with my little situation here?

it's a hassle to restart the laptop/ disable-enable the audio device when someone needs to use it

A:Windows 8 audio suddenly not working.

Well, one obvious choice is to find that device that's hogging audio. Skype ?, maybe some other comm program, music player ? etc.
If you disable some startup items, you could find what's doing that.

When my headphones are plugged in the jack it wont work, but when i take the sound jack out my computers speakers (which are coming from the monitor) make very strange noises. A:Windows Audio Has Stopped Working :(

This is caused by stapo64.dll, which - from name - is a driver by IDT Audio. If you are not sure about this device and/or its driver, whether or not it's actually a component of your PC, then you'll wanna check the driver using virustotal.com. The file's located in Windows/System32 directory. If the file turns up clean, then find an update for it at your audio device manufacturer or your PC vendor's website.

motherboard: ASROCK N68C-S UCC
audio driver: VIA High Definition Audio
latest Windows 7 updates installed.

I've spent 10hrs reading all over the internet and have done the usual troubleshooting:system restore
driver updating (from disk as well as site)
trying different audio sockets
using different external speakers
enabled/disabled playback devices
system speaker levels are full
enabled Loudness equaliser
used Microsoft Fix it Audio Playback which found no issues
run the audio troubleshooter from Control Panel, no issues found
i even reformatted and reinstalled windows hoping that would sort it out, yet that was pointless as i still have no audio.

can someone please help me find a fix for this.
if a system format did not fix the problem, im only left thinking that the on-board sound has died completely and i need a new sound card?

A:Realtek HD Audio stopped working after I upgraded Windows

There is a generic driver available from RealTek, but if you have reinstalled the correct driver from Gateway, I doubt that the direct from RealTek will help.

Are there any other problems that you are aware of, after the 8.1 update? I don't recall this being a problem with audio.

Go to the Device Manager and display what is listed in the Sounds Video and Game Controllers section. Post back on what is listed there, including any error codes. Better yet, post a screen shot of that section.

A:Wireless router suddenly stopped working (Lights still working though)

what devices do you have connected the router anything else wireless
make and model of the pc

does the PC work if you connect to the router by a cable ?
if not
try connecting directly to the modem and see if that works OK

we need to see some details, which will mean you need to copy to a working PC
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Direct link to the program is here http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifi_download_redirect.php
Then run and install the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.

Okay, this is the weirdest problem I've ever hard with computers. Here's what happened:

1. I had a few years old Pentium D 2,8GHz processor running on Asus P5VDC-X mobo. PQI 566MHz DDR2 and GF 7600GS 256mb PCI-E, 350W power.
2. I updated the mobo to Asus P5L-MX to support faster PCI-E cards. Everything worked fine, despite the processor ran too hot (58C on high use)
3. Because of the overheating I replaced the thermal paste but it had no effect on the temperature.
4. I thought I used too much paste so I replaced the paste again.
---
5. Bang, no video when I turn on the computer. I tried taking off everything part by part but nothing worked. It didn't work even when I only had processor and used the integrated graphics port. Tried resetting the bios too.
6. Nothing worked so I put back the old P5VDC-X and it worked like charm.
7. I thought it was logical that the problem was caused because of the mobo so I bought a new one, Asrock G31M-S.
8. No video... Did the same steps to this one too. It also had integrated gfx but it didn't work either.
9. The old P5VDC-X still works.

So I have no idea what's causing the problem. Is it the CPU? Mobo? PSU? RAM? I have no speaker on my case so I can't hear any beeps, but it won't start loading the OS from the hardrive and my USB mouse won't turn on. Tried using a differen't monitor too.

The main point is why it stopped working suddenly on new mobo's but still works with the old P5VDC-X? A... Read more

Two new motherboards tells us you made the same simple install error in both of them.
Tell us more about power supply, memory, cable.
Did you make sure the memory was correct for both new boards, and what is the memory on the old board. Would also like to know the power supply and other hard ware.
What happens with the most basic, simple install. Does everything light up?

If you used the same hard drive with the same Windows install on the two motherboards, that is the problem. Windows has detected that you have changed the motherboard and will not operate unless you reinstall Windows on the drive on each new motherboard... One install for each motherboard.
My guess is that you will be fine if you change hard drives or do reinstalls or repair installs of the Windows on the new motherboard.

Hi wingy17, Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the information pasted from "Problem Reports and Solutions".

Just Rename SFDAPO64.dll (Related to Sonic) and verify.

It may be due to "Fast Resume". Try this fix from microsoft.

Hi,

I've been using the Microsoft Wireless Broadband router (MN-500) to connect to the internet. This afternoon, while I was away, the wireless connection was suddenly lost. The internet is fine, because when i plug my computer directly into the router (via ethernet), i am able to access the internet. However, the router does not seem to broadcast a wireless signal for the LAN.

I've reset the router, both manually and via the software and reconfigured the network. After this process, the Wireless Network sometimes appears momentarily in Windows...but the connection drops before it can connect.

All the lights on the router light up as normal and it indicates that both the wireless LAN and the WAN are working properly. I have no idea why I can't connect to the network wirelessly though...

Any thoughts?

Thanks

hi,
My ps2 just suddenly stopped working, it wasnt at all gradual and it just makes a lot of clicking/loud/grinding (not very nice!!) sounds! i tried the solution that involved rotating the white clog in my ps2 which just changed the sounds - at one position it doesn't make the sounds but then doesn't seem to be able to read any discs. i marked the original position so i've now returned it to its original state but i would be very grateful for any suggestions on how to solve the problem!! (i've also tried cleaning the laser)
Cheers, Rich

Good morning everyone, and a Merry Christmas!

I'm going to try to make this as brief as possible, while still including every detail I possibly can.

Today I received a few cool gadgets for Christmas that I wanted to install on my PC. I realized I was short on USB slots, so I tried to install a secondary set of USB slots. I plugged it in wrong twice in a row, due to me misreading my motherboard. After a few restarts, my computer wouldn't boot. I attempted to clear my CMOS, which didn't help. I then turned off my power supply's switch, then turned it back on. After I did this my PC booted, but I was fronted with a boot screen that said the CMOS settings were wrong. I was confused as to what this meant, and my options were F1 to Bios, or F2 to default settings and continue. After booting, my Razer Deathadder quit working. Now, at this point, I'm not sure why exactly I did this, but I reinstalled Windows. I am using Windows XP Pro -32 bit. After reinstalling all my drivers, I realized that NONE of my USB ports were working. My keyboard, mouse, webcam, nothing worked. I updated my Windows, BIOS, drivers, everything is new.

In the screen for Hardware, all my Root USB kits have exclamation points, and it says they aren't functioning properly. I have NO idea what the hell is going on, and if anyone has any ideas or comments, please please share them with me.

I'm thinking that when I reset the CMOS perhaps something malfunctioned on my mainboard a... Read more

Hey guys,

So I put together a new PC running Windows 10 Pro around 3 months ago and everything was working perfect till 2 days ago when my mic suddenly stopped working. I use a Steelseries Siberia V2 headset and the headphones work fine, but the mic is not picking up any noise at all. I tried plugging in both the back and front ports and my realtek always detects that a mic has been plugged in, but it simply won't work. I thought maybe my mic got busted so I also tried using an A4 Tech headset that I had lying around in the office but it has the same issue, the mic won't work. I looked around online for possible solutions and tried the following with no luck:
Ensured the mic was set as the default device and that its volume settings were maxed out.Tried disabling all sound effects (noise suppression, acoustic echo cancellation etc).Uninstalled all audio drivers and reinstalled the latest realtek drivers on my motherboard's webpage: GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1151 - GA-Z170MX-Gaming 5 (rev. 1.0) Uninstalled all audio drivers and reinstalled the latest realtek drivers on realtek's own webpage: RealtekUninstalled all audio drivers and let Windows auto-install drivers.I even uninstalled all realtek drivers and tried using the standard "high definition audio device drivers."

Basically tried everything in this link: Microphone Not Working in Windows 10? | Win 10 FAQ

The conclusion was the same with everything I tried, the sound worked fine in both my speakers a... Read more

Hi, one day I started my laptop and the SSD in it (MZ-7PC256D) suddenly stopped working.

What options do I have to get it working, or atleast recover the data in it.

I tried putting it in another laptop or checking in BIOS, it's simply not getting detected.

EDIT:
The SSD gets super hot when I connect it to the laptop and start it.

A:SSD suddenly stopped working.

Not to be harsh, but when you get it working again thru what ever means you might have to do, make an image on a flash drive or what ever you choose and then, if the SSD has failed completely, install a new one and use the image to bring you back to the time of your last backup.

Hi all,

I run a network at home, 2 computers, both running xp. One connecting directly to cable broadband modem (computer 1) with the two computers linked by a single crossover cable. For the past year or so I have happily shared the internet connection as well as the printer and numerous files but today when I booted them up computer 2 - the one not connected to the modem - simply gave me a "Limited or no connectivity", I'd had the problem before and had in the past easily fixed it by repairing the connection however now it simply hangs on renewing ip address.

I've tried restarting computers, disabling and enabling connections, nothing I do seems to work. Any help is greatly appreciated and any more information I need to provide just ask.

Thanks in advance, Andrew
PROBLEM SOLVED!

I just went to check on firewall on host computer, when I tried to open up firewall settings i recieved something along the lines of "Windows firewall and internet connection sharing are not currently running, would you like to start running them?" Ridiculous i could spend 2 hours on something and solve it like that >.<

Out of curiosity, how did my internet connection service just "turn itself off"? seems strange to me,

I have a Compaq Presario CQ62-215DX, running Norton Internet Security and firewall through Windows 7. I sucessfully installed new Wireless LAN and Lightscribe system software several days ago, along with the Live Essentials, Realtek and Windows 7 Updates.

Everything was operating correctly yesterday, but when I booted up my computer today my wireless mouse refused to work. After trying a fix involving a USB stick, I realized that none of my USB ports work. The ports light up when I restart, until Windows 7 finishes logging in, and once it begins the drivers refuse to work. Is it because of the recent updates? Because I cleaned up my back-up copies? Any help will be apprecited!

A:USB Ports Have suddenly stopped working...

Have you tried disabling and re-enabling all of your USB controllers and ports in Device Manager?

If you don't know how to do get there...
Start menu > Right click on Computer > Manage > Device Manager

Moreover, to disable USB ports, go to the Universal Serial Bus Controllers button in the Device Manager. Right click each individual one and click disable. For each one. Then after each one is disabled, start from the top and do the same thing but click Enable this time. There are some dependencies in there sometimes that will disable more than one individual device, so be aware of that.

Hi guys,

The other evening I was downloading and installing iTunes after buying a new iPod, after numerous failed attempts of opening iTunes after downloading it I gave up and uninstalled it and turned my computer off for the evening.

The next evening after work I log on as usual and notice my internet is not working on my PC, I checked my laptop which is picking it up and working wireless, my xbox was working which is connected via Ethernet to my router.

I removed my ethernet cable from my PC and try it in both my Laptop and Xbox and it works fine so the Ethernet cable is not faulty. A green light still shows up on the back of my PC where I plug the Ethernet cable in so im assuming something is working there.

I have tried a system restore to the date before the problem started but I was getting an error saying that there were files that couldn't be found and the system was not restored?

My computer is Windows 7 premium
Network adapters - Realtek PCI GBE Family Controller, Realtek PCIe CBE Family controller, Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface (Yellow explanation mark next to it) .
I am at my wits end here now with trying to fix this, its a top of the range PC and is less than a year old.

I'd like to add I also have a USB to Ethernet adapter and I tried that and that was also not working!!
Things I have tried are,

Uninstall iTunes and everything that comes with it
Reset my router numerous times
Disable and Enable the network adapters

A:Internet has suddenly stopped working

you can try going into the device manager, Control panel>device manager.
Click on Network Adapters and in the drop down right click on the ethernet device, in that drop down box select Uninstall, but keep your drivers and reboot your pc. If that does not work do the same thing again except remove the drivers. reboot, re-install the driver (you'll need the drivers on your pc to install) and see if that does anything

A:USB ports suddenly stopped working!!

Tell us the brand and model of computer, whether a desktop or a laptop, and the location of the usb ports... whether front or back, or whether we are talking about a powered external hub, or a multimedia box in the middle of the computer which has a 9 in 1, 15 in 1, or similar memory card reader with USB ports.
Are the USB ports built into the case, or on a pci card slot on the back of the computer.
Generally, USB ports do not fail. There are a few times when they do because any electronics made with chips, thyristors, and printed circuits can fail. But USB ports are among the most rare of failures... except when you are using multiports.
On inexpensive USB connections, they all share one connector... If you have four or five ports on one connector to the motherboard, then those in use will reduce the power that is accessible on lower quality units.

Hi Turbonis!
This article from Microsoft support page may help you understand and fix the issue through a few steps like scanning for hardware changes and resetting the USB controller:
https://support.microsoft.com/kb/817900?wa=wsignin1.0
If not, then it could be that the USB ports have just died. For that, you'll need to take your PC to a professional to determine the damage.

So a few months ago, I built the computer I'm currently using. Everything ran relatively smoothly up until a day or two ago, when the audio just stopped functioning. I've done just about everything I can think of, with both speakers and headphones. I've followed up on just about every lead i've managed to find online, but I'm still open to suggestions. To walk you through exactly what I was doing leading up to the problem: I was using my computer in my room, audio functioning perfectly. I power it off and unplug everything, and carry it to a room opposite to mine. I plug it in and set up my monitor, mouse and keyboard. Now, here's the unusual part. I plugged a phone line that was connected to my into the port on the back of my computer. I'd never done that before and to be honest I was curious. Nothing happened, and while I messed with some settings for a little bit, it was uneventful. I then powered the computer off, returned it to my room, and set everything back up. Before putting on my headphones, I received a popup notification from Razer Synapse, asking me If I wanted to use my settings from the cloud or my local settings. I selected Cloud. It was at this point that I noticed that my audio had ceased to work. When I plugged in my headphones, I could sometimes get 2-3 seconds of almost clear audio, but then it would cut out again. Since then, I've uninstalled, then re-installed Razer Synapse, but It made no difference and I'm not certain it's even related. I'm in the pro... Read more

I have a printer plugged into a USB port, and it works, although I did have to reinstall the driver for it recently, because it too get the same error.
Is there a driver or drivers I should reload? What should I do to determine if it's really a hardware (port) problem? Devices will work on other computers, just not this Compaq desktop, 1.6Ghz, 2GB RAM, roughly 3 years old, XP SP3

We've got two PC's that are connected to the net, mine and my father's. I hadn't done anything to modify either hardware or software configurations, however, my Internet stopped working on my computer. My father's remains working. Putting it directly from the cable box to my PC works, changing the port in the back of the router does not, however my father's will work on any of them. Obviously the only thing left would be the cable connecting my network card to the router, however, I've tried another cord I had laying around (which was working the last I tried it) and it still doesn't work. I've tried ipconfig /release and /renew numerous times on the varying configurations that I've tried. No luck.

Any ideas? I don't really want to go out and buy another network cable if it won't work out for me either.

Hi and welcome to TSF!!!

Please check the device manager to see if the wireless device is still installed; make sure you do not have anything with an !, ?, or a red X next to it.

Check to see if your wireless service is running:
Click on START
Click on RUN
Type SERVICES.MSC
Click on OK
Locate the "Wireless Zero Configuration" service
Double click on it
Make sure it is set to START TYPE: Automatic
If the service is not running, please click on START to start the service.

My USB 3.0 ports have been working fine up until this morning, when I turned on my PC, and my mouse hadn't been moving. So I plugged it into one of the regular USB ports to see what would happen, and it worked there. I tried various other devices and I ended up finding out that none of my devices were working in the USB 3.0 ports. I only have two regular USB ports, and I use more than that many devices, so obviously this is a huge problem. I tried reinstalling my USB 3.0 drivers, the Etron 3.0 USB drivers, but to no avail. Still nothing. It may be worth nothing that when my keyboard or headset are plugged into a USB 3.0 slot, they light up but do no function. Screenshot of system specs attached.

Well, it says that some computers are joined, (on the individual computers) but when you open the Homegroup, no computers show and it says that there aren't any connected. I can have two laptops and a desktop all together, right next to each other, on the same network and they'll all say that. Yes, they all have the same password.I've tried to leave the Homegroup from all computers and start over again, but it won't allow me to create a new Homegroup. The only option is to "Join" which I did and am in the same place.Old stuff that still works, somewhat....

A couple of days ago, it seemed to be arbitrary while watching a movie I think on netflixs,  the sound just started to shriek. when I moved the mouse to bottom right of screen to adjust the volume, I found it had an x over speaker icon? when I clicked on it to get to volume control, a audio window opened and a message that said detecting problem and fixing problems but nothing was resolved. On the same speaker icon I  Right clicked the sound option ad it states "no audio" for playback and recording options? So I go to the Realtek audio manager folder to reinstall but there is no response?I reinstall Realtek audio manager from realtek and still nothing? So I end up here frustrated.  How can I get my sound back? Thanks in advance IkarlosI

Hi guys, I know this is my first post so I'm sorry that it is to ask for help.

I own a set of Turtle Beach X11 headphones that I originally bought for use with my 360. However, I discovered I could use them for PC too so I now use them primarily for teamspeak and such. To start with I had no problem setting it up: Just plugged in the USB lead, mic lead into pink jack, audio into green jack and everything worked fine without the need for drivers or any set up.

Everything has worked fine for weeks but all of a sudden my microphone is no longer detected by my PC. The headset speakers work fine, I can hear other people but they cant hear me. The weird thing is I can hear myself speak through the speakers when i speak into the mic, so clearly it isnt a hardware issue but something else has changed by itself.

The only thing I did before the mic stopped working (Aside from use teamspeak like normal) was to install hamachi and to try and use the STEAM voice chat feature, out of curiosity. I first assumed that one of these had maybe interfered so I did a rollback but that didnt help.

I have tried all the basic stuff and am pretty sure my sound card drivers are up to date that I know of but any help would be very much appreciated.

P.S. I have an ASUS motherboard with a built in sound card. Here is a dxdiag just in case it helps:
UPDATE:

I bought a cheap plug and play mic that just plugs into the mic jack to check if a new one would work. Unfortunately it doesnt, same... Read more

Newer PC with two HP dvd1270 drives, W7pro. Recently I discovered that neither appears to work. If a dvd or CD is inserted in either drive, the drive light comes on for a few seconds and then nothing. The drives do not show up on my COMPUTER page but they do appear in Device Manager. Whatever happened to them, it appears to have happened at the same time. Any thoughts?

Hi, I'm sure this is not the most uncommon topic brought up on the sound and audio board but I checked and didn't see anything that sounded helpful - the audio on my laptop suddenly stopped working!

I was watching a youtube video with my headphones, all was going fine, I paused the video and walked away for a moment then came back and the sound no longer worked. I unplugged the headphones and still no. I tried restarting the computer and still no. I checked the device manager and it says my sound devices are working properly. Everything is unmuted.

I do recall this problem happening once of twice in the past and its always been when I had my headphones plugged in so I really think its got something to do with them or the jack. The problem always seemed to fix itself eventually and the sound would come back. I'd like to get this figured out and not have this problem anymore. Does anyone think this could be a hardware issue? My laptop is barely a year old. Its a Toshiba L655 running Windows 7.

Any tips or advice would be most appreciated. Thanks!

***Update***

I shut my laptop down for the night and just tried it again this morning, the sound is now back.

I would still appreciate any tips/advice for what may be happening. I'm sure it will happen again. Restarting does not help but apparently shutting down over night does?

My sound was working earlier today. I was listening to music on youtube, and paused it in order to read something off a different website. When I went to re-play the song, my sound had suddenly stopped working.

I've tried system restore and updating drivers. Everything seems to be working correctly, but no sound will play. There are no errors in regards to the driver, card, or playing sounds.

However, when I go to the sound mixer and there is a sound playing, no green line will appear indicating volume. Same if I click on the mixer and adjust the volume.

Can anybody help me?

Thanks.

so i was playing xbox live until suddenly i got disconnected. i checked my computer to see that it said the network cable was unplugged. i already tried to uninstall drivers, reboot, tried a different cable etc. i narrowed it down to the nforce network controller. any help would be much obliged

Update: fixed it myself, im guessing it was an irq problem because i went into the bios and just disabled some ports i wasnt using like the parallel port for example, and the problem has cleared up.

The machine has the usual back and front ports and also a card reader (Icy Box with 2x3.0 and 4x2.0 and SD etc slots)

Now I have tried chkdsk /f /r sfc MBAM SAS ADW full Kaspersky scan and tried the sticks and drive sin my other machines and all are good. Have installed all the drivers etc etc but still no go.

Any ideas please before I run a rescue disk and memtest as I seem to be running out of options. Boards about three years old now - Asus P8Z77-V

Try unplugging all the power and let it sit overnight. Then plug in and try again in the morning. I've seen this work on occasion when all the USB ports suddenly don't work. For that matter, if simply unplugging AC doesn't work, might be worth pulling out any CMOS battery too.

I don't really know where else to post this, so I'm putting it here.

Whenever I try to open Firefox, I get this error message:

"Error launching browser window: no XBL binding for browser"

The odd thing is, the last thing I changed with Firefox is downloading the new update (since it did that all on its own) and removing the CoolIris plugin because I decided I didn't like it. It didn't stop working right away, though. It was fine for a day or two and then it suddenly wouldn't work anymore. What could be causing this?

Today in the morning i noticed that my cd-rw drive and cd drive stopped working suddenly. They have been working for years and both do not read discs anymore. The trays open and close normally and they both show in the Device Manager and say they are working properly. This is what happens:

I open the CD-RW tray and put in a disc.
I close the tray.
Then on the drive I see the green light flash about 6 times (scanning).
Then the orange light comes on and flashes fast continuously.
Nothing happens and the light keeps flashing and does not stop until i take the cd out.
The drives do not read the disc and in the explorer it shows the drives with no disc in them.

I tried checking the IDE (ribbon) cables and they are all snug...I also checked the jumpers to make sure its set right...I tried uninstalling the drives from the device manager and nothing works.

someone help!!! ive tried many tech forums but they cant help!

Hello all,

A Few days ago my laptop stopped reading my 2 USB 2.0 Ports (I am using a Compaq Pressario v6000 Laptop with Vista Home Premium 32bit). I went to the Device Manager and updated, uninstalled, reinstalled, prayed to god yada yada the drivers with no luck. I also went back to a old restore point and no luck with that. My computer is fully updated and I have no other idea's what to do. I have read something about INF files but I am somewhat computer literate (enough to get me in trouble) but not enough to know about INF'S and what to do. It was working one day, and then the next it wasn't. I've tried all the common fixes, like checking to see if everything is plugged in correctly, looking in Device Manager to make sure the volume is up and there are no "mute" boxes checked. Device Manager says the card is in working order. All of that, but I'm getting no sound. I know the speakers work because I'm running the sound through a Pioneer receiver and when I set it on "tuner" I can hear sound. So that's not the issue.

I'm thinking it's some kind of driver conflict or something, but I haven't added any software lately, so I don't know why things would've changed.

The bottom line is, any help you could give me would be appreciated much.

A:Sound on my PC stopped working suddenly

It would be useful to know brand, model, OS, and age of computer.
Have you looked in the device manager for red, yellow, or black flags indicating a driver problem?
If you have driven your computer to high volume for very long you may have "burned out" the sound components. In that case, if you have on-board sound, you will need to install a PCI sound card.

Hello,
I am new to the forum so I apologize if I'm in the wrong section with my question. (Writing this from my phone so hoping comes out ok! Lol)
My laptop died last week and have been using my husbands, which I hate! We had some issues with computer freezing on some webpages or after being on webpages for awhile (like facebook). Yesterday it froze and I could not get it back on. When he got home he did scan disk (which I also did) and got it working after going into safe mode and doing system restore. He said an update had gotten through and messed things up. (Though I'm sure his many viruses had a lot to do with his other issues!)

Anyhow, after he was on it a few hours last night, we lost connection. I figured the crazy weather was the culprit but it has been off all day. Our router is working and connecting but the adapter is not. Also our home phone says there is no line. We have unplugged everything several times, checked to make sure everything is in the right spots, I have even reset the router and rebooted the adapter. I uninstalled and restalled the adapter also. It is now telling me that "the connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the Internet is broken". The only lights I have on the adapter are power, battery, DS and now the US light is blinking. The online and link lights are not on.

What does this mean? Will I need a new adapter or is there something we have not tried yet that will work?? The phone is no longer sa... Read more

okay, lets see if i can explain this in a coherent manner. a few days ago my cd burner was working fine, but now when i go into my computer the drive isn't in there. in the device manager there are three errors, see below

in all of them, it says "the device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed." it's a plug and play thing, so i don't' have any driver disks, and i tried removing the drive and getting windows to re install it but it's still the same. when it was re installing it, windows didn't really seem to go through all the motions, if you understand what i mean. it took a super short time, so i know something messed up during that. i've checked to make sure the wires are all connected.

i don't have another cd drive to use, i used the burner to read cd and everything else, so basically i'm screwed without it.

last week i had some problems with my computer not starting up, but i managed to get that fixed by screwing around in the advance trouble shooting options. everything was unclicked, so i clicked it all and have been slowly unclicking it again. take a look and see if i messed anything up

is that okay? i don't know. and now since that starting up incident the internet won't play movies. i doubt the burner and all this are connected, but maybe i messed something up. also, i did a spy ware sweep with a bullet proof soft program, so maybe something... Read more

A:Certain keys suddenly stopped working

Boot into safe mode or command prompt.

See if keyboard works. Or even in BIOS and see if the UP key works. Make sure its not a software issue (virus). if those keys still don't work... you have 2 choices:

1 - Buy a USB keyboard for $10~25 (cheap and easy)
2 - Order a new keyboard from SONY and install it yourself of pay a tech. Most likely will require taking apart the notebook.

Onboard Realtek HD audio on the Asus P6T board.

I noticed last night when I tried to play something the sound wasn't working anymore. It hadn't been restarted in a week, so I'm not sure what could have caused that.

I have ensured playback devices are enabled and I have set both the 5.1 speakers and the C-Media USB headphone/mic audio device to default. Didn't make a difference, no sound coming out of the headphones or speakers.

In the Asus ExpressGate I can go to YouTube and my speakers work fine, so it's gotta have something to do with Windows.

I ran windows troubleshooting on Playing Audio and it says "Hardware changes might not have been detected" with a little yellow exclamation point and no other options but to close. It does say detected next to it though, so I'm not sure.

It happened all of a sudden, so I'm not sure what the deal is. I'm downloading the new Realtek audio drivers stickied at the top of this forum and hopefully that may make a difference.
I checked Device Manager in safe mode and it shows no little yellow exclamations indicating an issue. I cannot pull up Device Manager in regular mode, and I've tried to do a SFC /scannow which also doesn't work.

I also cannot get system restore point to open from the control panel, system, uninstall a program. So somethings farked up with Windows.

Hey guys! I've had my Aspire E14 for a few months now. I was using it today to play music when suddenly, one of the speakers stopped working. The left speaker literally stopped mid-song. I checked the volume mixer, and when I tried minimizing the volume of the right speaker (the working one), I couldn't hear anything, so I know that the left one's busted. I haven't dropped my laptop ever or anything like that, so I don't really know what happened. I haven't tried anything yet aside from restarting, because I might tweak something that I'm not supposed to, so I wanted to ask around first. What should I do and what do you guys think happened here? My cd burner of unknown brand (came with my Gateway) has been working perfectly for the pasy 1 and a half years. This morning while loading up CDRWin to burn a cd I got a strange error -

Followed by
(40) The data area passed to a system call is too small.Click to expand...

And finally
Error: Unable to initialize the ASPI manager. ASPI initialization failureClick to expand...

. It then doesn't let me burn because it says it cannot detect a cd writer. The only change I made to my computer was installing Winamp 3.0. Device manager says everything is working ok, and cds can be read from the drive. I get similar errors in other burning programs and have reinstalled CDRWin just to make sure. Hi guys, I'm hoping somebody can help me out here...

The first thing I do after installing win 7 is apply the uxtheme patch. I've been running custom themes for a while, but yesterday decided to change the look of things. I applied a os x leopard type theme, it didn't work and now I've lost all desktop visual effects (transparency, themes, win+tab).

I run the diagnostic and it detects that 'Windows Desktop Manager is disabled' - so I think "Ok, I'll just go into services and re-enable it"... but it's GONE! How the hell can a service just remove it self?

So I run System Restore back to when I knew it was working, but still no damn transparency, that service or themes, just the default non-transparent Aero!

Earlier today I had my laptop connected to some speakers with a male to male jack, and everything was going fine. I unplugged that cable (no music was playing at this point, so I don't know if the problem started then or not) and put it into sleep mode. Later I woke it back up, and suddenly there no was sound. I checked the Device Manager, and the sound systems supposed are working properly, nothing's muted. I plugged a pair of headphones in, adjusted the system volume and could only hear the faintest sound when I maxed it out. Also, the little bubble, "You have plugged a device into the audio output jack" didn't pop up when I put the headphones in or out.

Actually, I just double checked the headphones, and they seem to be working decently. They are some old cheap ones, which is probably why they didn't seem to work at first. I have to find my good ones, I suppose.

What seems to be the issue?

A:Sound suddenly stopped working

Go into device manager, delete the audio devices, and reboot. Hopefully it'll redetect everything. If not, you'll want to go to computer make (HP, Toshiba, Sony, etc ) web site and download and install the drivers.

Last night, I was playing World of Warcraft and my keyboard suddenly started malfunctioning. I figured that it was becoming unresponsive because of losing battery power, so I replaced the batteries (It is a wireless keyboard.) However, when I put the new batteries in, it started acting odd, if that is a good way to put it.

For example, if I typed "M", it would input "MNH", if I typed "H", it would input "HNM". If I typed "O', it would type "Ol;," and if I typed "i", it would type "i000000000(repeating0s)".

On windows 7 I tried uninstalling and installing USB drives manually but don't work. Can anyone figure out which problem I'm facing? Is it related to my hardware?

A:Suddenly all USB ports stopped working on win 7

First place I would start would be update all primary drivers for your PC, what ever flavor you have, desktop/laptop. Go to that vendors website and download and install all the latest drivers. If you have add on specific hardware go to that vendors site for drivers.

The next thing I would do is to rule out any Virus's, malware, spyware and adware that my be lurking about your system. It's known that some of these nasties can and do corrupt system software and hardware.

On a previously fine PC, I noticed the usb cable for my Palm Pilot had fallen out (so that's why I couldn't connect to it!)

So, I foolishly plugged the usb cable in. The screen froze, had to press reset to reboot.

On rebooting my ISDN adaptor had a cross on it, indicating it wasn't enabled, it was IMPOSSIBLE to restart it. So I deleted it in device manager......it wouldn't delete "the device has failed to respond in a timely fashion".

Then I realised all USB connected peripherals were not responding, ie isdn adaptor & printer! Everything I've tried has failed, switched ports, cables, nothing is detected when a usb cable is plugged in. So I was stuck with no internet connection, until I reinstalled my old PCI modem. Please guys, any advice would be much appreciated. I'm concerned something I did plugging that cable in has fried all my usb ports on my mobo

Now, suddenly, I am connected to the Net but nobody can get connected from their laptops.

The ONLY thing that has changed recently is that I did a reformat on my PC. That's all I did, I didn't unplug anything, just the simple reformat one does by putting in the Windows disk. Can that have caused this?

I've restarted the D-Link, and tried unplugging it, to no avail. I'm not all that brilliant with computers so I am now at a dead end.

Can anyone help?
