Sound Blaster ZxR and Toslink - No System Volume Control

Q: Sound Blaster ZxR and Toslink - No System Volume Control

I'm having a little problem here which I wasn't quite able to solve using the official Creative Support.

First a little explanation:
Before installing my new Sound Blaster ZxR I had to temporarily use the Onboard Sound of my Asus Rampage IV Black Edition because of a SLI Water cooling component blocking the necessary PCI Port of the former Sound Card ( a Sound Blaster Recon3D Fatal1ty Professional ).

Because of the cracking ( grounding loop? ) I receive during the startup when using 3.5mm jacks ( or 1/4" with the ZxR ) I stopped using them whenever possible and instead started using the Toslink connection on both the Recon3D AND the RIVBE as it electrically disconnects the PC from the Sound System.

Now here comes the Problem:
Using the new Sound Blaster ZxR and having it connected via Toslink to my Sound System I'm not able to control the Volume using...
Multimedia Keys on my KeyboardVolume Mixer from the TaskbarEven Muting isn't possible

The only way to change the Volume level from now on has been by doing one of the following four...
Change the Volume level by Hand in the corresponding App itself, not the overall System Volume - Kind of sucksUsing the Hardware Dial on my Speaker System - Hard to reachSwitch from Toslink to Jacked Cables - Startup cracking

Switching the default Playback Device from Speakers to Digital Audio (S/PDIF) - Will cause me to loose the ability to run Encoders like Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect and it's DTS Neo:PC Music Mode feature which, in my opinion, really improves my listening experience as it then uses all my Satellites, not just the front ones.

To be honest... I'm not sure how my settings were while still using the Recon3D that allowed me to go Toslink while still being able to change the System Volume simply by using the Multimedia Keys of the Keyboard but if anyone has an idea I'd really appreciate some Information.

Thanks in Advance.

A: Sound Blaster ZxR and Toslink - No System Volume Control

I have a recording studio and use Toslink's. I have to control the volume level in my recording program. There are level controls on my recording interface unit (Roland Octa-Capture) but it is for analog only.

In a PC, when you use a digital output, that bypasses all (or most all) of the sound card as the device its feeding is the one that has the volume level control. I suspect this also applies to what you have, as it apparently works the way my Toslink works (the level control in the application program).

Hello everyone, I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop running Windows Vista. I recently bought a USB audio sound card (since my computer's headphone jack was damaged).

The volume control on my computer has always worked fine, but when I plug in the sound card I'm no longer able to control the volume via the sound icon on the taskbar. The sound card's volume always comes in full blast, and I can only lower it through the controls in the program it's currently running (i.e. the volume control in a YouTube video). Therefore, when I try to control it directly through my computer it doesn't work.

Is this a common problem? Is there any way I can get this fixed or configured, or is there a problem with the sound card?

A:USB Sound Card - system volume control not working

As this is a software issue my response has to be quite limited. Basically, you may need to check a box specifying your default audio device in your sound settings. Hope this helps, if not drop your question into the software section.

I've had my new sound card for over a week now, and I've had constant problems with the sound since then. It's better than the complete lack of sound I had before, but now it's starting to get on my nerves.

My SB 5.1 VX card constantly makes crackling noises when in windows and other audio is not playing besides regular windows sounds (folder opening, errors, etc) and even with all volume set to maximum, it's still incredibly quiet all the time.

I use a pair of headphones, although the speakers have the same issue when I use them. Neither speakers nor the headphones have drivers or anything of the sort. They're both plug and play.

Any assistance fixing this problem would be appreciated.

Upgrade your drivers, which version of windows are you running? I had a similar problem with a Sound Blaster card when I moved from 32 bit to 64bit windows, that turned out to be a driver issue.

Probably a stupid question. My old soundcard [M-Audio Delta 2496] still works with Win7, but all I use it for is to send spdif coax signal to my Benchmark DAC. Motherboard [Asus M5A97 Evo] has integrated sound with toslink out. Is the quality of the output signal identical via either MB or soundcard to Benchmark DAC?

Does using the soundcard coax out bypass all card circuitry or does the card provide essential conversion that may be superior to what the MB does? The answer may be obvious . . . or not :-). Help appreciated.

I purchased a new computer (well second hand) and installed a fresh version of XP Pro on it. The computer now does not have sound or a volume control in the task bar. I assume the computer did have sound previously as there were a large assortment of video and music files.

When I search for volume control and click on them I get this message:
"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices go to control panel, click printers and other hardware and then add hardware.

The program will now close"

On the side of the computer it has the following listed as its audio device:
Integrated Realtek ALC658 Digital Audio. Dolby 5.1 surround sound ready'
Anyway, i downloaded a Realtek ALC658 driver from google and still no use.

Here is a question I can't seem to find the answer to in the archives.

How can adjust the volume output from my Windows ME machine (with SoundMax Digital Audio) so that the volume of the background music I like to listen to (via RealOne Player version is quiet, but the other important sounds my PC makes (like email or calendar notifications) are loud enough so I can hear them?

I've seemingly tried all combinations of settings for the volume sliders/adjustments, including:

1) The volume knob on my speakers
2) The RealOne Player volume slider
3) The Windows volume control panel "Volume Control" slider
4) The WIndows volume control panel "PC Beep" slider

Even when the "PC Beep" volume slide is set to maximum, and the "Volume Control" slider is set near minimum in the Windows volume control panel, the PC beep is virtually inaudible when the background music is acceptably quiet (by adjusting the RealOne volume slider and/or the volume control on my speakers).

Am I doing something wrong? Is there some other way that I'm not thinking of to boost the volume of the system sounds my PC makes, while keeping the RealOne music volume low?

Hello, All! This is my first problem request so if I forget something please humor me.

Yesterday I played a YouTube video on my eMachines laptop (reconditioned, and purchased in 2004, that has worked just fine all this time but I know has to be replaced). When I tried to play this video for my daughter, the slider on the volume control in the system tray and the slider on the Windows player refused to hold the volume I wanted and slid to the low position, causing the sound to be nil.

I went to a Windows forum and searched for the problem - to no avail - but downloaded SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition to check to see if I had bugs. Aside from the usual ad-related stuff, it found something called Trojan.Agent/Gen-Krpytik which it subsequently quarrantined and I deleted. However, that seemed not to have solved the problem.

Then I looked in my Bookmarks and found you lovely folks. Since I'd forgotten the name/password I'd used the last time I had a problem, I joined again, and spent two or three hours searching for a post describing the same problem. Today I continued by lonely search with no more success than I had yesterday.

I'm posting in hopes that you will be able to help me with this. There was one person who had a similar problem some time ago, but that post had never been answered. Help, please?

Many thanks and bright blessings!

When I click (once) on the little speaker in my system tray, a volume slider comes up. Whenever you click on the slider, it makes a tone, presumably so you can hear how much it needs to be adjusted. It should make a "ding" and "click" sound, but instead I'm getting the system beep, which is always the same volume. It used to work like I wanted it to, but I recently reinstalled the OS, and I don't remember having to change anything for this. I have looked through the sound effects listed in the "Sounds and Multimedia" applet in the Control Panel (I'm using W2K), but none of the listed settings seem to affect this sound. I've even looked through the registry for "beep", but I didn't see anything that was clear as to what it was intended to do. Where do I go to make this adjustment? I also noticed that, when using MSN Messenger, the popup tray notification (for when someone on your list logs in) is using the system beep sound instead of what it's supposed to use.

I have a dell windows 8.1. Everything has been fine for a long time and now... no sound. I must admit to never really understanding how sound works on my laptop. After some fiddling around I managed to get some sound - but only when speakers are plugged into the headphone socket. Now my PC controls make no difference to the volume. I think the ss below suggests that I want the sound to go through the 'speakers headphones' but the sound level meter says its using the communications headphones.
This is what I have for my sound card.

The same happens when I stream audio - only works if headphones connected and no control over the column from pc.

Lastly, when I right click on the top one and click test it says 'failed to play test tone'

Can anyone help please?

Many thanks

A:sound only works with headphones - no control over volume

The first thing I see is you do not have the correct sound driver. You only have the generic, basic function, Windows installed High Definition Audio Codec (Driver).

First step is to install the correct hardware sound driver. Not enough system spec's provided so I can't research what you need. If its a factory built PC, go to the PC vendor and download the Win 8.1 driver. If its custom built, go to the motherboard vendor for the driver.

I have a friend who bought a new microphone for her laptop, which runs Windows XP Home Edition. The mic is one of the ones with the pink input plug, which her laptop does support. When she plugs it in and tries to record something, it's just dead silence.

I tried to walk her through un-muting the mic, but she has no options for that under Sound/Volume control. Under Options->Properties there is no option to select Microphope or Line In to be enabled in the main window.

I got her to update her sound drivers, but it didn't help, either.

Anyone have any idea what might be wrong, and why there is no way to enable microphone settings under the Sound/Volume control section? Thanks...

I have an older Dell Inspiron with WINXP. Over the past week or two I've been burning a lot of CD's to iTunes, typically listening to them while they copy.

Today I just wanted to play a song in iTunes but speakers were quiet. I checked speaker volume, it's on. Task bar, it's showing that it's mute. So I single click the speaker icon, and it does not show that sound is mute. Volume is at 75%. I also opened the volume control panel and same thing, none of the mute buttons are showing mute.

While typiing this post, I had some other ideas... when I opened Quicktime it went into an install process. I then tried playing an song in itunes and it works fine. HOWEVER, the task bar speaker still shows mute.

Question: Why does the taskbar show MUTE when I can play music and the actual volume control does not show mute? (If I open the volume control and click mute, it mutes but the icon does not change).

Thank you very much,

Hi there,

Bit of a weird problem here. The sound was working absolutely fine on my PC until recently. The machine is second hand, but according to my control panel, I have an M-Audio Delta Audiophile soundcard installed. This hasn't been changed. When I first got the machine, I ran the audio through the in-built speakers on my monitor. Then, briefly, I ran it through a stand-alone speaker. The sound came out of the machine just fine at this stage. When I moved the audio to go back through the monitor, it would not come through. I then tried to run it back through the speaker, but still no joy.

Now, as I've already said, this machine was second hand, and in the time I've had it, I didn't fiddle about with any of the audio settings through control panel, so I can only assume that the ones I see before me now are the ones that were presented to me when I got the machine. However, the first major thing that I notice is different is that I no longer have a speaker icon on my task bar. When I go into Sound and Audio Device Settings, the Device Volume section is greyed out. As are the speaker settings options. I cannot hear system sounds either.

I have two system conflicts in device manager - both of them are listed as RAID Controller. I have no idea what these are, so I'm not sure if they would be causing anything, but as I've not added anything new to the system, I should have thought that these would have been present when I received the machine.

So, I'm at a bit ... Read more

I hope you can assist me as the Windows 7 volume mixer is freaking me out and I cant seem to find a way out with this...

I run Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron 6400 and I use the volume buttons on front a lot to increase/decrease/mute the sounds... however this feature is not working with Windows 7 or maybe I have not fixed the correct settings.

Also I have a Logitech MX610 mouse with volume buttons on it that don`t work as well.

For the volume buttons on the laptop, is there or did you install a driver for it? It may or may not be needed, but from the sounds of it, it is.

Hi all,

Just joined up....
What I want is actually the opposite of what most people are looking for.
I want to install windows 8 on my kids computer but want the volume level to be set at a certain level so the sound is not to high no matter what they do.

I am able to achieve this right now as the desktop is on XP and i have the wave bar set to a certain level so no matter how high they put the volume bar it just stays at a certain level.I have hidden the wave bar so they cannot even get at it by mistake.

The main thing is that I am using a sidewinder X4 keyboard which has the vol+/- so they can easily increase the volume even if I hide the volume tab from the desktop in windows 8, while in XP it remained a certain lvel even if they put it upto 100%.

I have been searching for win 8 mixers where I could maybe have the same type of control as the XP but so far have found nothing.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated and used

But it happened 4 times already and the only other thing that fixes it beside rebooting is uninstalling the sound device from the device manager and installing it again. What is causing this? Welcome to the Windows 7 Forum.

The first thing I see is you do not have the correct sound driver installed. I don't know what your hardware is but what is listed is the "High Definition Audio Device" which is the Windows installed generic sound driver. You should install the correct driver from your PC vendor.

In addition I see the NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device and that has caused some problems in the past. Temporarily disable that in the Device Manager and see if that helps.

Please fill in the "My System Specs". It helps us to try and help you.

Recently I went through a day of torture by an unsuccessful attempt to System Restore. I lost a display driver from some inadvertent deletion in either Sytem Mechanic or some other registry cleanup program. I tried several solutions, then, perhaps prematurely, reinstalled Windows XP Pro. Experiencing further difficulties, I then reinstalled Service Pack 1, which fixed the display problem pretty much. BUT... some sound problems developed:

a) I was no longer able to locate any volume or play control. I found an article in the Windows Knowledge Base that told me how to install the play control panel through the command prompt from my XP Pro disk. This fixed this problem... But...

b) While I can now control the volume through the sys tray icon and the play control panel, I no longer have this function on my keyboard! I reinstalled the keyboard software from a download site, and the keyboard's shortcut button functions all work BUT NOT the volume control. The mute button works fine, but NOT the volume control buttons (the - and + buttons). They were working fine previous to my reinstalling Windows. I fear that some registry file or setting needs fixing.

c) Lately I have discovered a final and third problem. There is no sound recorder in my files! I find NO sound recorder in my Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment section, nor anything like this by conducting a file search. It seems that this recorder didn't get installed when I reinstalled Windows. Is there a file... Read more

A:No Sound Recorder in Windows XP and Can't Use Volume Control on Keyboard!

Check Device manager and particularly the Keyboard and Sound items. If either have yellow marks or don't agree with what you know to be the correct item, delete all of the listings and ask for a new detection, as you can do there.

Even if there are no apparent problems shown there, delete those two items anyway, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Windows will pick them up again and perhaps you'll get lucky.

Beyond that, be certain that you are supplying the correct drivers for the enhanced keyboard that you apparently have and if you have sound card drivers, supply those instead of letting Windows do a default selection for you. Normally XP does well that way, but you're evidently not a normal case.

Good luck.

Pretty often clicking on my sound icon (Which IS present in the system tray), does not open the volume control slider. When this happens I go to Control Panel but Sound controls won't open from that location either. There's no way to control the volume and must reboot to get it back (temporarily, because it keeps happening).

Do I possibly need driver updates? If so, which one of these is my sound card?

Did it before? The Windows volume control doesn't affect any of my players volumes, so if I have Winamp open for example, adjusting the volume with the Windows mixer control doesn't move the Winamp slider, nor does it move the WMP slider, which is why I leave Windows volume at full, and adjust the volume from within what ever program I'm using to watch a film or play music.

I have problems with an application written in Visual Basic. The application is supposed to be able to control the volume of different output channels of the sound card RME Fireface 800. Within the VB application direct sound is used to control the volume.

However, volume control changes work for some of the assigned channels but not for others. Looking at Window's volume control mixer it can be confirmed that the output channels are correctly assigned to the application but the volume control changes are ignored for some of the channels.

The application and the volume control changes worked fine with the same application and sound card on a Windows XP machine.

I'm thankful for any suggestion on how to solve or work around the problem.

I recently bought a dell computer second-hand from my friend, who had XP installed on it. It came with a subwoofer and a set of 4 regular speakers. On it, he had installed a form of creative volume control in addition to windows volume. The way it worked was he had the windows volume set to 100% at all times, and the creative volume control around 3% for regular browsing, 10-25% for gaming and 50% or higher for rocking out with music. I recently acquired windows 7 home premium x64 and upgraded my operating system. My soundblaster card has all the necessary drivers and the audio is all hooked up properly, and the only thing missing is this form of volume control. After looking around for the old software and trying a few different freeware and shareware programs, nothing has pulled through for me; any suggestions?

A:Creative sound card, windows 7 compatible volume control?

What exact sound card do you have?

Have you checked creative's website for additional software that goes along with the driver of your card? Is the windows volume not sufficient for you, or do you just want the extra ability for volume control?

If you installed the creative driver, have you checked in the audio control panel that's built into the driver?

Hi guys,

The following set of exes allow you to map custom buttons on laptops to Windows shortcut commands . Currently supported is : to increase and decrease volume/brightness by a single click . Quick brightness change is great for long gaming or development sessions on the pc !

I have been missing that feature badly.

Also sending shortcuts i.e ALT+TAB is supported.

You need your laptop to have the software that can map the button to the exe.

This is donationware so all help is appreciated.

Coming soon also one-button changing the Nvidia color levels, as this is another thing that has been killing me.

I am quoting from the post, I wrote on Norton Community support:"I borrowed my friends USB memory to give him some videos about our project. Well, I was careless and opened the usb drive immediately, and there were some kind of virus in it. I usually check external drives for the virus looking like files with WinRAR, as I use it for the first time. When Norton detected the virus, it was too late. I guess I've got cleared from the viruses; I made a Full Scan. But their affects remained. I can't make the volume control icon appear on the taskbar. I used to miss it sometimes, but just deactivating and activating the icon used to fix that issue. Now it has completely vanished... I can't even control volume from my keyboard shortcuts, which I could before. Also I .mp4 based video files are missing their videos, although I can hear the sound of them. I tried XP Recovery without formatting my HDD. I don't have enough space to backup my files to my external drives. So, my only option is to make a proper recovery somehow..."Additionally, I used ComboFix and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. My daughter has a Dell 4600 desktop running Windows XP and the hard drive crashed. I purchase a new Seagate 160 GB SATA hard drive to replace the bad one. After putting in the new hard drive, I used the Dell Reinstallation CD to install Windows XP Home Edition.

When I try to install the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 drivers and application software I get a message that says "Setup could not detect any Sound Blaster Audigy 2 on your system."

I have removed and reinstalled the sound card which did not help.

Device Manager shows the following:

Sound, video & game controller:
Audio codecs
Legacy audio drivers
Legacy video capture devices
Media contrl devices
Video codecs

?Other Devices
?ethernet controller
?PCI modem
?SM bus controller
?Video controller (VGA compatable)

Properties for each item in ?Other Devices indicates "Drivers for this device are not installed."

In the BIOS the settings are as follows:

Sound off
Network interface controller on
Mouse port on
USB emulations on
USB controller on
Serial port 1 auto
Parallel port enter

Dell support and Dell forums and Creative Labs (Sound Blaster) support and forums were no help at all.

I right-clicked and chose Properties on the taskbar and found that the volume icon option has been grayed out. I logged off and found it to reappear. Could anyone kindly shed some light to what has happened? I haven't touched on any of the drivers let alone uninstall any but I did notice this happened right after I installed a truckload of fonts and I do mean a truckload (about 3000+ at one go)... Could that be the problem? Thanks very much in advance.

I'll be frank and direct: I'm going INSANE with this god damn problem. I my volume control icon has disappeared from the system tray which means I can't control my volume the way I like (choosing how loud each application would sound, adjusting sound volume manually instead of using the Quickplay buttons I have).

I have tried like five different freaking solutions and I just hate none of them working. I've looked all over the internet and no one has been giving me the right solution.

1. I tried erasing Pasticonsteam and iconstreams via regedit, and it didn't work.
2. I tried adding two or three registry items offered by websites to supposedly fix the problem: it didn't work.
3. I checked my device manager to see if my sound card was iffy (with and exclamation mark) and no, it works fine.
4. I tried "enabling" the volume control via the Properties option on the task bar but the volume control is GRAYED out.

NOTHING works. Someone please help me, I'm really annoyed wit this stupid problem. ANy help is HIGHLY appreciated.

ok so this problem was just about from the beginning. i thought i would be patient and it would go away. at first i noticed that while using msn messenger, its volume control for voice chat controled the main volume for the whole pc. so if it was low things wouldnt sound as high as i wanted. no matter if i adjusted the main volume in the control panel, which was always set to highest, the volume would still be at the mercy of Msn M. so if it was lower than usual i would have to sign into msn m and adjust it. not only does this happen with msn m. it also happens with web video applications used by youtube, livevideo, etc etc! those arent usually the culprit of low sound. its usually just msn m. even now with live messenger i have the issue. im tired of being patient so here i am

Hello :)
I hope I put this in the right area..

I've been searching for a solution to this volume problem for a while now, but to no avail. I've found others with a similar problem, but no solution. So here's the deal: I just got a new motherboard, and ever since I got it my volume control has been faulty. First of all, all sounds are very quiet, even when all volume sliders are set to maximum. Next the main volme control has no effect whatsoever on the volume of the computer. I can can slide it all the way to the top, or all the way to the bottom, nothing changes. The only thing that makes any difference is the Wave control and it barely does anything. Also, when I put "Mute all" doesn't mute. However when I put mute for Wave control, no sound comes out.
All this is incredibly annoying because I often listen to music on my computer, but now I basically can't hear it. To note: I don't have a volume control on my keyboard, or on my speakers, and I know nothing is wrong with the speakers.

If anyone could help, I would really, really appreciate it. Thanks :)

I just got my IR Blaster for my XBOX ONE. I've gone thought the devices setup for my TV and Cable BOX. Also setup the TV guide. The only thing I can't get to work is the volume up down on the TV? Pushing those buttons on the XBOX Media Remote does nothing. It works during the setup, I can see it increment by one when it sends the volume up signal and asks for confirmation that it worked. Sound is to the TV VIA HDMI. TV and cable box go on and off when the XBOX is turned on and off. Chanel up down works on the cable box with the XBOX remote. I've gone through the setup several times but can't figure out how to make it work? I have not been able to adjust the volume, ever from the XBOX remote, either in games, or playing media on the XBOX ONE. I just assumed it's because I don't have any external speakers attached? Short Story
Wave meter in volume control keeps stopping. I googled it, seems to be a virus. Performed a virus scan, came up with nothing. Did it with another anti-virus program, also showed nothing. Need help. Thanks.

Long Story
So basically, I wanted to watch a youtube video. When I played it, there was no sound. Thinking it was a simple volume problem, I checked the video volume, the small icon on the taskbar, and even went into the control panel to adjust the volume settings. I thought it might be my headphones, but I tried using the speakers and neither worked. I tried doing the voice playback, and then I could hear my voice. I thought maybe it was fixed. Played the video, no sound. At that point I thought it was my sound card. I didn't want to replace it, so I kept trying to look for a better solution. After much frustration, I managed to make my way into the volume control. Start - Control Panel - Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices - Adjust the System Volume - Audio - Sound Playback: Default Device: SoundMAX Digital Audio - Volume - Wave. I saw that the Wave option was all the way down, and moved it up. After moving it, I could hear the video crystal clear, so I closed all the windows I didn't need anymore. Well, after about 30 seconds, the volume shut off again. I went back into volume control, and the wave bar was all the way down again. I raised it, and closed the window. I was looking for the apply button to become available, for I had assumed that not app... Read more

I'm running windows XP on an old Dell Inspiron 1501 and I'm trying to get my microphone to play directly through my speakers so I can record them both simultaneously. The only answer I've been finding is to tick the 'microphone' checkbox in the volume control playback properties panel, but I don't have a microphone checkbox. There should be a 'microphone' box under SW Synth and CD player but I don't get one apparently.I've downloaded the latest SigmaTel Audio drivers from Dell and despite not having a problem with them before this, I'm inclined to believe that they're the problem. Any ideas?

A:No microphone control in playback Volume Control panel

Okay well of course I find an answer right after posting the topic:

Those two pages detail how to get an Input Monitor checkbox which functions just like the microphone one I wanted (although you can only mute it, not alter the volume). I used Instructional Set 3 from the second page, having to add the 'RecMonitorMute' entry as detailed in the first page and I can now hear my microphone input directly through my speakers.

HOWEVER, I'm still unable to record both the microphone and speaker sound at the same time. I thought recording the 'Stereo Mix' channel with the microphone coming through the speakers would work but it isn't and I don't know why. Any ideas?

I recently purchased the Creative Sound Blaster Audigy FX and am having problems getting it to actually play any audio or record any sound.

I've browsed other threads with similar issues on this board and as such have disabled my motherboards onboard audio in my BIOS settings, have reinstalled the drivers from disc and from the Creative website, and even attempted to use Driverpack Online to download any missing drivers. However my problem still persists.

I can see that the Sound Blaster Audigy FX is present on the sound option on the control panel, but it never actually plays any sound. Additionally, whenever I try to play a test sound in the speakers advanced properties I am returned with the error "Failed to play test tone".

I've included a few screenshots that might help make things a bit more clear, and I'd be very appreciative of any help I can get with this issue.

A:Creative Sound Blaster Audigy FX Sound Card, no playback/recording

First thing, I assume you have correctly attached your speakers to the new SoundBlaster.

As you have a separate sound card, did you disable any on-board (on the motherboard) audio in the BIOS? If not, that is the first step. The on-board, is still enabled, can conflict with the SoundBlaster.

Also, temporarily disable the AMD HD audio in the Device Manager for testing (the AMD is for HDMI audio). Reboot after doing this.

Finally, although this has may not have any affect on playback, the default recording device should be the SoundBlaster "What You Hear". In the Recording sound panel, RIGHT click in an empty area and then check to show Disconnected and Disabled devices. If the SoundBlaster was installed correctly What You Hear should now show up and you can enable it and make it the default recording device.

Before, I had a soyo and a 2800+ AMD Athlon XP and i had the Sound Blaster Live 5.1. Now with this ECS mb, the sound card doesn't get detected anymore, even in device manager. I downloaded the new driver for the Sound Blaster Live 5.1 from their official website and when I came to install it... it said that there were no Sound Blaster cards detected on my computer even though it was securely pushed in IN a pci slot!!

Then I decided that I don't need sound blaster so i installed the driver for the integrated sound card on my mb (realtek AC-97) and everything LOOKS fine according to their program and the control panel (sound and audio options) but i dont receive any sound from anything at all. Ironically, it was detected on his 1.2 ghz AMD Athlon Thunderbird and now i'm puzzled as why it wasn't detected on mine.

What solutions have I tried?

I installed numerous drivers for both the sound blaster and the integrated sound card repeatedly and there wasn't any hope.

I am so close to having my new audio system established. On the headphone side, all I need to do is place my order. However, I've run into a bit of a snag considering the sound card.

I was originally recommended the Sound Blaster Z to pair with my headphones. Exact card here, the one with the external microphone since I'll need it. Unfortunately, this sound card specifies Windows 7 and 8 as supported operating systems. I asked if it would still work for Vista, but the other forum (headphone forum) seemed to think that it wouldn't, unfortunately. I'm not looking to upgrade my OS. As horrible and clunky as it is, I've made it work for me.

IF it would work with Vista, than just let me know and read no further. If not, I'd love if I could get some recommendations for a comparable card.

I'm looking for the best sound card possible, given my physical and operational specs. I have PCI-E slots 1x and 4x free, and my OS is Windows Vista Ultimate 32x. The card will support both gaming and music, though I'm more concerned with gaming than music at this point. I'm not looking to drop a bundle (the SB-Z was a little on the expensive side) but as high as 70 or 80 is acceptable. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I'm raring to place my orders, haha.

I've been using my microphone and a few days ago on the volume control the mic volume was at the top. Yesterday, it was in the middle and i couldn't slide it up any higher than that, and today it is at 10% and i cant budge the knob to turn it up. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

A:Mic volume unable to go above 10% on Volume Control

mmmm....actually i've had a very similiar problem....not quite sure how i fixed it though. Try updating your drivers for your soundcard, that might help. Also(obviously) go into control panel, and mess with things from there. Also, do you have any errors with any sound drivers of any kind? i know if....kind of nuke some of mine(stupid me) with an anti-adware program....if you have that could be part of the prob, and those usually aren't to hard to fix, just take a little time.

It makes it sound like the only way to get sound from all of your speakers is to enable cmss and click that top option. The only way I can get sound from all of my speakers is to enable the bottom option. What is the deal, and am I getting the best/worst sound in the way I am doing it?

I'm trying to make my "Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum ex" works on Windows 7 64 bits, I did install the most new version of the drivers provided by Creative Labs, it seems like it is installed without any problems....the Device Manager shows all drivers are installed correctly...when I run the audio test the graphic moves like if the soundcard actually works but the real thing is: THERE IS NO SOUND!!, I have done all the tests that Creative labs recommends in their page but I got nothing, please could somebody help me to make this sound card works??

Thank you!

A:Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum ex does not sound in Win7x64

That is an old sound card and what Creative calls a "legacy" card. Do you have the SB set as the default audio playback device?

Do you have any integrated audio (on the motherboard) devices enabled? If you do, disable that in the BIOS as it can conflict.

Try reseating the sound card (with the PC off) and see if that makes any difference.

Have you tried plugging a headset into the GREEN speaker jack on the rear of the card, in case your speakers are the fault?

Also, please fill in the My System Specs as it helps us to try and help you.

This seems to be a problem that Creative has not been able to fix with new drivers. The work around is to limit the computer to below 4GB of memory. Has anyone come up with drivers that work so I can use all my memory?

Hey guys,
I just recently bought a Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit external sound card to connect my 5.1 speaker set into. I plug the Sound Blaster into my laptop which runs Windows Vista Business.
I have been able to get all the speakers working with the Windows drivers installed using the "Virtual Sound" option (Control Panel -> Sound -> Speakers -> Enhancements.) Windows tests all speakers correctly also.
However, when I install the updated Creative drivers it will continue to use only 2 speakers even with DVD's etc... even though Windows understands I am using 5.1
I would just leave it without the Creative drivers, however I need them in order to record audio properly through its inputs.
Has anyone else encountered this, or know how to fix this? Damn Vista always causing problems
Any help would be appreciated.

I have put the sound card into my computer and made sure that I've hooked up everything correctly, but I have ran into a problem with it. When I ran the download "Product Identification Module Update" from the Creative website, it's telling me that I don't have the right OS, and tells me to update to Windows 7 or later versions. Well, my problem is that I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, which I know is plenty new, and I don't understand why it's not letting me download the update/driver for the sound card. Please do help if you are able to

A:On board sound gone after installing Sound Blaster Audigy Fx...

Hi: See if your BIOS has an onboard audio setting. If it does, it may have automatically gone to disabled when you installed the add on video card. Check the options you have for the onboard audio setting. If it is on Auto or Disabled, change it to Enabled, save the setting where you made the change, and again when you exit. The sound should work on both devices then. And if the audio card doesn't work with the onboard audio setting on enabled, then change it to Auto if the onboard setting had been on disabled.

Hello guys,

Last night I was helping to a friend and connected his computer with mine by KVM switch. We had done all, I got unplugged KVM switch, reconnected my monitor,KB an mouse.Everything was just fine.

After a while, without reason, (or there may be some reason which I can't figure out),I just got lost out of my sound. Uninstalled and reinstalled all X-Fi apps,no good.

Now I have installed a fresh OS,updated (it's all accurate under my system specs),and all drivers, including SB X-Fi Xtreme audio. No good.

1.Device Manager recognizes proprely under Sound, video and game controllers (SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio/This device is working properly.)
2.Click on Speakers icon,on the General tab,Jack Information :No Jack Information Available
3.Check or uncheck box next to Digital output settings makes no difference
4.Headphones tested on another computer,working
5.Equalizer shows moving green line when playing audio,as if it work
6.No system sounds
7.There are 2 events in Event Viwer, attached to this post.

I have fresh Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64,no antivirus,no antimalware,no any other program,only updates, Adobe Flash Player,and drivers.

Starting to think that i'm missing something simple.Totally confused here after checking so many things so many times.

Looking forward to your response.

1. Reseat the SoundBlaster sound card (with the PC powered off, unplug then plug back in). SoundBlasters have a history of seating problems.

2. Post a screenshot of the Device Manager, Sound section.

the games that i've experiencied this sound glitches are GTA San Andreas and Splinter Cell 1, they are the ones i've been playing lately...

Hello all!

I just installed a Creative Sound Blaster: Value 1024 (WDM) from 2001, I know it's quite old, but it's the only one I have available to me.

After I installed it, it worked temporarily until I rebooted to finish the driver installation. After that, I've had no sound at all, and I need my sound for my games.

My computer specs are as follows:

Processor: Pentium IV AMD Athlon XP 2100+ ~2.1GHz
Video: NVIDIA GeForce5 FX 5200, 256MB Onboard RAM - Overclocked to 325 MB.
Sound: Creative Sound Blaster: Value 1024 (WDM)
MoBo: VIA KM266
Memory: 1GB 210MHz DDR RAM - 1 Stick
Hard drives: (2), 50.4GB SATA (7200RPM); 111.4GB SATA (7200RPM)
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP3

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Get into the device manager and "roll back" the sound driver to the time before you installed the non-working driver... or remove the sound driver and reboot your computer and see if the driver is automatically reinstalled and working

Disabled Auto Installation of Drivers
Disabled Virus Protection and Firewall
Disabled Onboard Audio (BIOS)

Installed Sound Card
Installed Standalone Driver SB24_PCDRV_LB_1_04_0090
Opened Sound Control Panel > Speaker Properties > Custom and selected Digital Output Only (my speakers are digital) omit this if your speakers are analog

Hope this helps!

The first thing I would do is install the latest driver. Maybe you did this already but you didn't mention it. If you did and it isn't working, maybe an older driver might work.

Done the research, and unless I've missed something, there's a caveat that hasn't been addressed in this issue.

I have an SB Live! value card, have installed the Daniel_K driver for it, following the suggestions about deleting the existing RealTek (which didn't seem to work, though I didn't put *any* time into why that didn't work), and scrubbing the system with the recommended driver scrubber - can't remember the name but it was recommended in an earlier post.

I *record* with the SB Live! value card because of the low-noise, and rock-bottom price that these are now available for. On-board sound has terrible noise floor issues. They all do. I occasionally play games with the analog joystick, and attach to the midi port to back up my Roland VG-8 guitar fx box. The card is fully utilized in my system, so I don't want to switch to the on-board garbage.

So, back to the problem. The Daniel_K drivers installed well, BUT, though I see the VU meter in the system tray responding on playback (i.e,, it jumps around indicating that Windows is trying to send the signal to the card), I get no sound out of the speakers. I've tried headphones with no joy. I've also tried the KX drivers (nice effort btw, but no midi, or joystick drivers with the KX stuff), with the same result. No sound from the card.

No IRQ conflicts, no DMA issues, etc. I've tried it in the only other slot on the mobo.

BTW, mobo is new, and uses the AMD SB710 southbridge. Does that Southbridge just n... Read more

A:Sound Blaster Audigy SE or on-board sound?

ok you will need to download this program because there are a few motherboards that use that

than after you have downloaded it right click on the file and hit extract or it might say unzip than open the extracted folder if it doesn't do that automatically than run cpuz. after its finished loading look at the top and click the tab that says mainboard than write down the information it says about your motherboard than post it here and that should make it easier to tell you which is better.

Hi everyone,

I noticed the volume of my music was not as loud as it was in the past when playing CD's or MP3 files with Windows Media Player 10. I had the volume turned all the way up in Media player and also in Realtek HD Audio Manager, but the sound was just not anywhere near as loud as it was before. I recently un-installed "Discover stream hub / Discover.exe" and thought that this might have had something to do with it, but that does not seem to be the case.

I decided to try to play an mp3 file with Realplayer and found that with the volume turned up in realplayer, the mp3 files sounded normal again, plenty of volume.

What surprised me is that if I close Realplayer with it's volume control turned up, then open the MP3 with Medial player, it will sound normal in media player, (plenty of volume). If I turn the volume control in Real player all the way down, close it, then play a file with Media Player, there will be no sound at all.

Somehow, the volume control for Realplayer is effecting and overriding the volume control for Media Player. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how this might be happening ? Has anyone else ever experienced this type of thing ?

It's not a big deal now that I found out what was going on, but tracking down problems like this can drive you nuts. It seems crazy that the volume control from one program would control the other, I'm just wondering what might be going on. I'm using Windows XP Media Center Ed... Read more

A:Real Player volume control also controls Media Player Volume ?

Hi John

The reason that this happens is that when you change the volume in real player, it changes the 'Wave' volume for the whole system. I don't pretend to know too much about this but basically, real player changes part of the system volume which also affects the volume in media player. To see this for yourself, open Real Player and then go into Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices under control panel. Click on Advanced Volume Controls under the 'See Also' heading on the left. There should be a column labelled 'Wave'. If you now change the volume in Real Player, you will see this changing also. As a result, it changes the volume system wide. Hope this solves your confusion.

Last week I was trying to copy some audio cassetts from my stereo to my hard drive. That was when I found out I did not have the appropriate sound card to do so. I cantacted Dell and purchased a sound card which is supposed to work with my system, which is a Dell XPS420 Windows Vista Home Premium. The sound card arrived, I installed the sound card and the Drivers from the CD which came with it. My speakers sound like a Microphone without a wind damper, and no volume. I disabled the "Digital Output Device {SPDIF] High Definition Audio Device} driver so their would not be any conflicts. Sound very fuzzy and very far away, even with all the volume controls turned up. The sound card is from Creative labs and is a Soundblaster Audigy 24bit. Normally I am very good with this type of thing. By the way I have contacted their Tech Support twice, went to the site and tried all their troubleshooting tips there. I gey whispering sound from the speakers when I move the mouse couser accross the desktop.

First time posting here, hopes are high.
I have a computer, athlon 1800+ XP processor, 512MB Ram, 30GB HDD, DVD combo drive, CDRW Drive, Sound Blaster 2 Card, Raden 8500 video card. Systems running windows 2000 professional, recently purchased Logitech Z-640 Speakers in hopes that I could listen to my movies in surround, but alas the speakers have thwarted me. I have it all wired correctly, speakers to sub, sub to center channel, center channel to the 3 surround outputs on my card. I get sound through the Front left and front right and sub, and if i press the nifty matrix button I get some use out of the center channel. The rear 2 speakers have not worked to date. I have the most recent drivers available from Creative, july 29 04 i believe was the date released. The speakers work fine if i switch the rear and plug them into the front. I tried to download the DVD-audio play software from creative, but it wont install, as well as the surround sound mixer program from creative. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot!

You may want to remove the 5.1 sound card and drivers, then
uninstall the drivers for onboard sound. It may be a good idea
to run a reg cleaner after uninstalling all sound drivers.
Disable the on board sound in the bios and Re-install the sound card,
boot into windows and install the sound card drivers.
