Laptop power issue, sometimes wont charge.

Q: Laptop power issue, sometimes wont charge.

i don't exactly know where the best place to put this tread is, or if this is even the right forum. But i'll make a post here anyways.

So two days ago my laptop was not able to turn on at all and so i checked the ac adapter and it was beeping so i got brought a replacement from Canada Computers.

So everything after here is with my new ac adapter:

Now it powers on but if the power is connected after the computer starts up then the ac adapter is beeping and the computer no longer receives power but after a random interval of time the beeping stops and computer is charging again.

However if i put in the power line before the computer starts the power line is beeping at first but once i boot the computer the beeping stops and windows shows the power as connected.

Also when i change the Battery Mode in the Lenovo energy management panel the power disconnects and the ac adapter starts beeping again and after another interval of time the power is recognized by windows again and the beeping stops.

As well if i plug out the power supply from the laptop and plug it back in it takes a random interval of time for the power to come and there is also beeping.
So is there anything that i can do to fix this problem.

Thanks,
Harry

Last night my son was using the laptop for a school project (it was not hooked up to the power cord) and in the middle of what he was doing it shut off.  He says that he never recieved any message stating the battery was about to die.  We plugged it into the power cord all night and it still doesnt do anything.  It doesnt even show a light that the power cord is plugged in.  Has anyone else had this problem and can anyone help me?

So, my issue that ive looked everywhere for a solution to is this.  I was about to give this laptop to someone and I reformatted the hard drive to clean it up before doing so.  After this I went to dells site and loaded up the drivers for this machine.  All is fine up till this point.  Then I updated the bios to the newest version a12, and all went fine.

Well, later that day I needed to unplug the laptop and go to a different room and It just turned off after I unplugged it.  It wouldnt turn on with battery power either.  Plugged it back in and it loads fine but the battery is stuck on 36 percent charge and says not charging.  Now im getting a message saying the battery needs to be replaced as well, which is *** because I know that the battery was working just fine before this day.  Not only that why wont a battery with 36 percent charge turn on the laptop?  Its got the flashing red battery symbol when powered on with the ac adapter but without the computer on, but still plugged in, the battery doesnt charge or have any lights.

I have already tried the uninstalling of the acpi trick, as well as the taking the battery out while its running, or taking it out purging the power and reseating.  Ive tried all the common tricks to no avail.  Not sure whats going on but I know this battery was good, and it still says 36 percent but wont charge and wont power the laptop on.  Hope someone can help.

Thanks Gary

A:DELL VOSTRO 3500 BATTERY ISSUE (not charging and wont power on computer with charge) HELP!

First check:  make sure the BIOS (F2 at powerup) recognizes the AC adapter.  If it does not, the battery will not charge.
If the AC adapter is not recognized, try another Dell OEM adapter.  If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the DC jack:
http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=9935
And if that doesn't solve the problem, replace the mainboard.
If the AC adapter IS recognized, but the battery will not charge, unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Try again -- if the battery still won't charge, odds are the battery itself is bad.
If the battery is original to the system, it's about four years old - well past its expected lifespan.

Hi all,

This is my first post here/first Toshiba issue after owning my laptop for about 4 years!

I have a major problem with my Equium p300-190, with a Li-ion battery pack.

This morning, there appeared to be an issue with my power supply. The charger connection would rapidly change from charging and then not charging every second or so.

This continued throughout the day until the computer suddenly turned off.
Now even when the charger is connected, the lights on the front of the computer do not register it as charging the laptop.

I initially thought this was a charger problem, but the computer turned off when on 43% power. I was wondering whether anyone can help me determine whether this is a battery problem, or a motherboard problem, as well as suggested courses of action.

Any help is really appreciated!

A:Equium P300-190 power issue - no charge

> Now even when the charger is connected, the lights on the front of the computer do not register it as charging the laptop.

Does this means that the power LED and AC adaptor LED don?t light even if the AC adaptor is connected?

In such case the new, good working AC adaptor should be connected in order to check if it?s AC adaptor or notebook related problem.

Just for info: I don?t think that the problem is battery since the notebook should operate properly using the Ac adaptor only. Even if the battery is removed and Ac adaptor connected, the notebook should power up?

So either its AC adaptor or notebook?s hardware problem.

about a month ago it wouldnt charge. the light next to where the ac adaptor plugs in always lit up before telling me the computer registered that it was being charged. now my laptops completely dead because the light next to the ac plug in wont light up. i dont know if the problem is internal or if i need a new battery or adapter.

i'd like to go the cheapest route possible because i'm a college girl and am pretty much broke. lol. im sure you all know what thats like.

A:My laptop wont charge!!! =(

It could be the charger, replacements not that expensive (try to stay away from universal adapters, they are often really poor quality)

It could be the DC socket (the hole where you put the charger in) Does it wiggle around a lot when you put the charger in?
has it still got the PIN inside that hole? Does it look damaged?

Also
Try taking the battery out and plugging the charger in - see if that fixes it? It may be a faulty battery causing the issue.

Let me know. I will advise

I noticed the other day my laptop was dead. When I went to plug in up a red indicator light for the charger came on then went off and would not even power up when plugged into the wall. Last night when i plugged it back up just to see what it would do a white blinking indicator for the charger came on but still will not power up. I bought a new charger but it will not come in until next week. I just want to know if maybe i should order a new battery. (it is about 4 years old)

my laptop wont charge in a nut shell.

the battery indicator has 0% remaining, and i have to have it run on mains permanantly, even with the mains plugged into charge the percentrage doesnt change, the AC adapter LED is green with power obviously because its making my laptop run on mains!

the battery itself i have taken out to see if there are any dust obstructions, there is a button on the battery itself and it tells you the charge level, it has 5 led's and it has 1/3/5 all flashing when i press the button.

i have a samsung q35 laptop.

any further questions please ask!

Ok i have a Gateway MT6451, its about 8 months old and IS still under manufacturer warranty. In the past few months i have noticed that my battery isn't all that good. I do leave my laptop on my bed charging most of the day all week long. Now about 2 months ago something happened to my all the outlets in my room, and none of them work still to this day until an electrician can get there. After that i noticed that my battery doesn't like to charge as good as it used to. Now by that i mean, every so often i would see it flicker on and off as if its charging and not charging, but the whole time it wold be plugged in. Well last night it did it tremendously bad and began to flicker a lot when i would wiggle the cord. Well i woke up this morning and my computer wont charge at all. I called Gateway and they said to reseat the memory and hard drive (whatever that has to do with power i don't know). I did that and still no power. I know my battery isn't very good, and doesn't last long when unplugged but like i said i hardly ever unplug it. My question is there something i can do to fix the computer myself instead of having to send it to gateway. I'm a college student and cannot afford to go without my computer for a month while it sits in gateways warehouse waiting to be fixed. Any suggestions? Anyone think they may know what the problem is? Thanks

I though the battery had gone bad, however it does this when plugged into electric also. Any ideas?

Hi,
I am using a HP Laptop, 6314tx. It has been 1 year and 9 months since I am using it. In the past couple of months, I have experienced a battery problem. My laptop battery doesn't charge more than 33%. It was 67% first, then came down to 43% and now 32%. Sometimes, it shows '100% available (plugged in, charging).' But, when I click on the battery icon, it again shows as '32% available (plugged in, charging).'

Is there any solution to this?

A:My laptop wont turn on or charge

If you don't have the original charger and you are using a charger not designed for your laptop voltage, amps and watts you most likely damaged your laptop. (Capacitor or resistor on the motherboard).

Hi freei32002, and welcome to TSG.

Was the charger plugged into the laptop when you dropped it? If so, you may have broken the charger jack on the motherboard or broken the soldered connections between the jack and the motherboard.

In addition, it is constantly charging the battery, but the battery charge meter does not rise. Hi JOVVVVV,
Are you using the original Dell OEM adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point. Check the battery health in BIOS (if applicable).
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.

The battery would stay at 53 percent and when i would unplug the charger it would immediatly shut off. i troubleshooted in the device manager and reset the laptop. Nothing happened. I reset a second time and the battery was charging and the laptop would run off battery power. this soon stopped working. I continued to troubleshoot. i got it to charge again and run off battery power but now it will again not run off battery power. the battery is now at 74 percent so i know at some piont charging was happening. this is very frustrating. Iv built a gaming pc jst recently and i feel like i should be able to figure this out. Any help would be much appreciated.

I currently have a XPS 12-9Q33 laptop that is not charging. The light at the end of the power adapter is no longer lighting up so it appears to be faulty. I've called Dell to purchase a new adapter but was told that they no longer sell replacements for them and was recommended to buy an adapter from a 3rd party source.
I purchased a replacement with the same voltage and amperage that is supposed to work on a XPS 12. The laptop now powers on but will not charge. The BIOS states that the adapter is unknown and will not allow it to charge.
What can I do now? I find it really frustrating that I cannot get a direct replacement from Dell themselves so I'm stuck with a laptop that is not portable at all since the battery is at 0%

Third party adapters usually do not have required logic circuit to complete the batter charging loop.  It's easy to find genuine, OEM Dell adapters:

Hello, I have a one-two year old Compaq Presario and it has stopped receiving power a couple of months ago. The battery currently doesn't work. I took it in to Micro Center, and they saudered the power port. That fixed the problem temporarily, but, two months later it stopped recieving power. I was running Ubuntu Linux then decided to change back to Windows XP. I was happily running the Windows set-up disc to reformat the entire hard drive. After this was done, the set-up disc went on to copy over a load of files and then went into a reboot, the screen went black (OK) but then everything just hung . In the end I went to power off intending to start again. The computer would not power off except by my pulling out the battery and supply cable. If I reconnect the cable, I can power on with the power button after which I hear the fan and the optical drive being read but then it just stalls - nothing on the screen, cannot get in bios and still refuses to power off. It"s either a big coincidence or the three symptoms ( no screen: no bios: no power-off ) are all a result of the failure to self-reboot during the windows set-up? I have removed the CMOS battery and left it out overnight but to no avail Can anyone help? My laptop is a HP Compaq NX6325. Thanks.

A:Laptop wont boot and wont power off

The first question is hardware or software? That this happened in the middle of a Ubuntu to XP conversion is interesting, but may be purely coincidental. It could be a straight-up hardware problem that just happened to occur at this time.

So, the way to determine this is to try to boot using some kind of media. XP disk, Ubuntu Live, Hiren's, whatever. It if boots, hardware is possibly good. If not, hardware is bad.

If hardware is bad, you WANT the hard drive to be bad. Everything else costs more money than the computer may be worth.

Hey guys, I got my hands on a pretty sweet dual CPU HP Z800 workstation. So I threw my GTX 980 in there and at first everything seemed great. But it's been having issues powering on. Below is a video of the exact symptom but basically it turns on for about half a second then shuts off, and continuously repeats this loop. I've looked into this a bunch and found several possible issues and I think i've tried almost all of them. One of the things im confused about though, is that theres a greenlight on the back of the power supply and everyone says if i take it out and plug it in the greenlight should "come on" if the power supply is good. I cant find any clarity on if the light is just supposed to come on for a second or if its supposed to stayyy on! So if you guys have any ideas on that please let me know. Because I'm still not certain if its the power supply thats the actual issue, and replacement 1100watt power supply is very pricey! Here's a video of whats happening:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_fF9yVLaSU&feature=youtu.beI've tried:Removing all RAM and replacing.Different video cards.Reseating all the connectionsMade sure the PSU connectors/pins are all snug where they should beDifferent power outlets/not using a power stripUnplugging all peripheralsMade sure nothing lose in case (like a screw) shorting it outPlease help - thanks in advance!

A:laptop wont power up

If it made 3 loud beeps when it powered up, then the RAM is faulty. There are 2 sticks of memory in this PC. 1 of 1gb and 1 of 2gb (unless you upgraded). If you know how to check RAM proceed to reboot with one stick taken out - no beeps means resolved. Hopefully it's the 1gb not the 2gb that's faulty!

Hi..Just purchased a Dell Latitude D505. Can not get it to power up. Have seen a few other threads with the same issue so followed a few of the steps. Pulled the battery, held Fn key while powering on and got the one key next to the power button to light up. I also pulled the memory and added some that I know does work and still nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

If your purchase was from Dell or a dealer, that should be your first point of contact. If from a private party, was the machine working?

my dell inspiron 6000 is refusing to turn on.

earlier this week the power cord like ripped and the ground wires broke so the power supply fried itself. the laptop was still working and I was able to use it until the battery ran out. I orderd a new power supply and when I plug it in the laptop wont turn on, charge or anything.

I could still even turn on the laptop even when the power was too low, it would flash the power too low screen and thats about it....but it would still turn on.

But then light goes out, and laptop doesnt go on.  Tried the on/off switch...laptop still doesn't go on. Closed laptop, then Removed and then reinserted battery. Reopen and laptop again tries to go on then cuts out. Left it to charge a while incase theres an issue with battery being low. Still no joy. on/off switch not reacting at all. but the action of opening the laptop, from closed, triggers something and the machine starts to whir into action, but then cuts out. tried hard reset, no joy there either. i am not technically minded so dont know what i can try next. any help please? TIA

Hi all,

I have an Acer/Texas Instruments Extensa 390 laptop which wont power up at all, the charge light comes on when the ac adapter is plugged in so at least something must be happening. I know this is an old beast but I would really like to get it going as its perfect for what I want to use it for.
At first i thought the problem was the power switch, replaced that, still nothing. The battery is warm after a while with the power connected, therefore it must be charging and there must be at least some power going through the motherboard as the battery is at the front and the power connector at the back.
I have removed and tried without hdd, cdrom, battery, ram. still no luck. tried the ram in both sodimm slots, no change.
Its been a while since i have worked on a laptop so forget what it will and wont start up with. Should it still power on with no ram or bad ram? i have some more ram on the way for testing. What about the CMOS battery, I have tested this at 2.91v but cant remember what its meant to be, will check it again today after a while with no power connected to make sure its at least holding its 2.9v.
What about the 'lid closed' switch? will a laptop normally power on with the lid closed (ie. if the switch is faulty and the computer thinks the lid is closed when its not). I cant see a switch anywhere under the hinges so must be under the latch at the front.

Any info or ideas would be hugely appreciated

Hey all,

I was fixing my stepdad's laptop today (ibm thinkpad t21...fairly old with no battery) as it had a virus. I fixed the problem using spyware doctor or whatever, and everything was fine... computer worked perfectly.

So i told him to try it out tonight, and now it wont power on at all!

It is getting power, as it has (and always has had) and orange flashing light telling me the battery is dead! However when i press the power switch, the light doesnt blink (so in effect misses a blink) and thats it, it carries on blinking again, with no action from the computer. No sound of it even attempting to boot up or anything.

Any suggestions? Could my fixing of the spyware problem make it not even attempt to boot up??

Hi Ascfire,
First you should check if the power cord works. You can also try to remove the battery and HDD, power cord unplugged, of course. Put all together and try again. There may have been a current peak and it can make a lot of harm, which needs professional help.

hi
my laptop will not boot without being plugged into the wall...

here is what happens.
Booting from battery: loads fine up to windows xp loading screen then freezes..

booting plugged into wall: Goes absolutely fine

also the laptop will run off the battery AFTER being booted up with the wall socket...
can anyone help??

A:Laptop wont boot without external power

Logically the ability of the battery to sustain the boot-up power drain sounds to be the problem, which indicates that the battery is on the way out.

At Windows boot, the instantateous power drain is probably at its peak, hence it runs OK after its booted if its the battery unable to deliver the power in that amperage.

The problem started about a month ago, I would be using my laptop and it would shut itself down. If I let it set for 30 mins it would come back on and I could use about an hour and it would go down again. The machine is all orginal nothing has been added or changed from the orginal config. I took it to a local pc repair shop as well as Gateway and was told they could not duplicate the problem and nothing was wrong. Now it wont come on at all, it tries to boot up and shuts right back off. Sometimes it makes it to the Windows XP screen and then shuts down. At first I thought the laptop was getting to hot but now it seems like a power issue. I am not techincal, but am tired of spending money to be told there is not a problem with the machine, therefor I am looking for a resolution to this problem myself. Any suggestions is much appreciated. Thanks!

I have a 7537 laptop, that just died after powering on.  I was on airplane, on a fully charged battery, It booted, I went to connect to Airplane Wifi and poof, just blacked out.
So before someone, asks,  yes the battery was fully charged, no there are not any lights on. I pulled the battery and then just tried the ac adapted after I arrived to my hotel.

After googling this issue, I am seeing this is a common issue and Dell does not have an answer for it. other than replacing the motherboard.

any suggestions would help especially since this is financed threw Dell still.

I just had a similar problem with a Latitude E5570. Here's what worked for me:
Disconnect the power adapter
Remove the battery
Hold the power button for 5 seconds
Reinstall the battery and try powering on.
Reconnect the power adapter.
My problem was something to do with static flea power.

Hello Guys,I have HP dv6 pavilion series with Windows 10 (64 bit) for 4 years now. I dont have the Battery so I usually work with directly connecting the Power cable. It worked fine till now. Today it abruptly Shut down and since then its not booting. The Charging light keeps on Blinking.I have tried the 40/30 sec trick (holding thepower on button for 30-40 secs for the capacitors to discharge) twice, but in vain. I also cleaned up my cooling fan and checked for all the wiring, its all intact. After re-essembling the laptop, the same problem persists. And about the Bios update, I do think I have the latest bios updated, as my laptop is connected with internet, and I usually keep it all Updated. And if someone recommends me to Update the BIOS, well I cannot power on my laptop, so is there any alternative for updating the BIOS? Earlier it did Abruptly Shutdown twice or thrice over last few days, but used to Power up again. But today it wont work. Please Help Me guys. Thanks

Hi guys,

I just replaced a bad T61 power jack ( I'm sure it must've been bad since two of the wire connections came loose from the jack itself). The new power jack had all the connections to the jack just fine, so I plugged it in, connected it to mobo, put everything together and still no power.

Could it be that when the connections came loose originally the motherboard got damaged in the process? I felt almost sure it was the dc power jack as soon I saw those loose connections, but i guess not?

EDIT: To give you guys a better idea. I bought one of these: T61 DC Power Jack

I also tried plugging in the charger (which I've tested with a multimeter, and it is also a new chrarger) into the NEW port, then trying to get power from the contacts on the mobo connector (white piece in the picture). I tried pushing down with the negative connector to one of the black wire contacts, and pushing the positive tip to one of the red wire contacts and did not see any power there, so I'm wondering if I tested it wrong?

Hello,

This problem is from a friend of mine but he doesn't has a computer now. Yesterday he was charging his powerbank through his Laptop (Asus bought 3 months ago) USB port. After a while the computer was shutdown and won't turn on, even when it's plugged through its power adapter.

Is there any solution to this?
Thanks!

A:Laptop wont turn on after charging power bank

Hi and welcome to TSG.

As annoying as it can be to have to do it, your best option if it appears totally dead is to RMA the laptop if it is only 3 months old. Fiddling about with it too much trying to diagnose the problem could end up invalidating any warranty your friend has.

The only simple checks I would do are to try and power it up with and without the power cord connected.
Then remove the battery (assuming it is a removable one) and try it again with the power adapter attached.

It could be a problem with the laptop or that the power brick has just failed, it happens occasionally.

A:laptop blue screen of death, now wont power on

I'd start by making sure the power adapter is working and the jack on the laptop has not broken - as is common.

Then I'd try re-seating the memory or try the memory one at a time if there's more then one stick.

You could also have them remove the battery and try it just on AC power and vice versus.

Hi, recieved this laptop with it turning on with only black screen. Power leds were on along with the quick play and battery lights. Fan was running. No show on external monitor.

Removed battery and wireless card. Hooked it back up to AC power and it booted up all the way. Problem was when it went in sleep mode it wouldnt respond. Had to remove battery and AC power then reconnect them to get it back on.

Decided to do the reset thing. Removed battery, cmos battery, and AC power then held down power button for 60 seconds. After that i left it alone for about an hour. Replaced all the batteries and connected it back to AC power and now nothing. No response at all. No power lights except for the blue ring at the dc jack. Battery light comes on for about 3 minutes then goes out. No fan or hard drive spin. What happened? How did reseting the cmos and static discharge proceedure make it do this? Im lost. Any ideas? Thanks

A:[SOLVED] My Laptop Wont Start Without Power Cable!!!!

Check your power settings (while the 'puter is on AC, of course).

two other posibilities:
the battery contacts might not be in full contact - to fix: remove battery, clean contacts and make sure they still have a little spring or bounce to them. (if they don't bounce a little, they might not make full contact)
the battery may no longer be holding a charge - only fix for that is a new battery.

Pull the battery out with the AC adapter disconnected, hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Replace the battery and see if the laptop will boot. If not, remove the hard drive and re-install the memory. Does the laptop try to boot? If all this fails, the motherboard might be bad

I'm trying to fix a laptop for someone, but I can't quite seem to figure out the problem. After the computer has been powered on for about 15 minutes or so, the screen suddenly gets all crazy and the computer shuts off. If I try to turn it back on, it will instantly shut back off after about 1-2 seconds. It takes several minutes before it can be booted up again. Even if I don't let it run for 15 minutes or so, and I shut it off after only 10 seconds while it's still booting, the results are the same. There currently is no battery in the laptop (I was told the battery wasn't charging), and I already tried using a replacement power cable. Any ideas?

I have a Toshiba 1110 Satellite and for some reason, the lcd backlight wont power on. When I start it up, I get the "Toshiba" splash screen and then the backlight shuts off. I can just barely see the windows desktop.

Heres the strange part, I plugged in an external monitor and then restarted, causing the lcd to light up perfectly. The screen will then stay on until the next time the monitor is shut off, then it's back to not working.

I already had the inverter replaced and that did not help and then the repair shop wanted 700 bucks for a new screen ( how those idiots figure that $700 is an economical quote for a 3 yr. old computer, I do not know )

Anyway, it seems that the screen works perfectly fine until I shut the it off. So I am kind of baffled as to why it wont power on unless I plug in an external monitor (????????). Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Just a side note: if I have to replace the screen, am I able to use any compatible 14.1" TFT? Because I heard that the compaq presario 1700 uses the same screen and there are quite a few on ebay for next to nothing.

I was wondering if anybody can help me with my current problem. My laptop won't charge, nor will it start up. I had recently had AC adapter issues and had to get it repaired. I had soldered a new tip for the old adapter, and it worked for a time, but the solder was a horrible job and it got loose again, so I just decided to get a whole new adapter. Before the solder had come off of the old ad adapter, the laptop ran fine, receieved power, and charged the battery. Now with the new ac adapter plugged in, the power blue LED simply blinks blue while the orange battery light remains off. I was wondering if there was a quick fix for this. I have already tried taking the battery and AC adapter out and holding the power button for well over 30 seconds and I still receive the same result- blinking LED. Can anybody help me out here?

My laptop model is a Toshiba Satellite A135-S2426. As it is an old laptop, it's really not worth bringing in getting it serviced and I have a little knowledge about the laptop itself. Also a point of note, it isn't the AC jack on the inside, since i've removed the casing and checked on the jack...it's completely separate from the motherboard and when plugged into another ac source, it worked fine. The new AC adapter has a green LED lit meaning it's receiving power, and it's also brand new so i don't think it's that. But yeah, any help here?

A:Toshiba laptop power issue

Toshiba's are notorious for power problems. I had a Satellite P10-809, I paid a small fortune for it, and within 6 months I started experiencing power problems. I was also receiving a constant mild electric shock whenever my arm rested on the casing of the unit while typing.

I believe there is a class action law suit against Toshiba (http://www.mommamuse.com/2006/11/14/class-action-lawsuit-against-toshiba/). I was furious trying to deal with Toshiba as they denied any problems and more or less implied that I was imagining everything. In the end, I wrote off the £1,500 I spent on the unit and have never purchased Toshiba since. I have also warned every company I have worked for to boycott Toshiba.

If I have the battery removed & the unit is plugged in, there's no life at all. If the battery is in place & the power cord is unplugged, the power light blinks for a bit. Hey guys...

I have an ASUS G71G-Q2 Laptop, and recently I have been having some major problems with my power supply when the laptop is running..

Basically, I have no problem charging it when it is off, and about 60% of the time I'm using it there doesn't seem to be too much of a problem...
However, for that other 40%, while my power cord is plugged in the laptop keeps switching from Battery Mode to AC Mode ever 2-3 seconds, and eventually stops recognising the power supply all together...
Also, when I fiddle with the nose of the power supply in the laptop, I find that its searing hot - so much so that it has burnt my fingers quite a few times....

This is a pretty major problem for me because everytime the laptop switches power supplys, the entire screen freezes for about 1/2 a second - and as you can imagine when this is happening every 2-3 seconds its fairly infuriating (a few pens have gone flying heh)

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this / a solution?

A:An issue with my power supply on my laptop

I believe there are two primary possibilities here...

1. A defective socket - or other issue with the AC Power Supply. (Eg transient open in the cord) Either would cause "high resistance" in the line and might result in the heat you are experiencing.)

or (Less likely) 2. The battery is bad. (This could cause a high current from the power supply as it is essentially trying to charge a battery with an internal short - again resulting in heat.). (I think this is not likely; since you say it charges fine.)

Since this is a "high end" machine (or was when it debuted), and since it is relatively new, you might want to check whether warranty is still in force, and whether a warranty repair may be possible.

Otherwise, I would consider swapping PSU (~$65), Battery (~$90), or both.
Of course, if it is the socket itself that is bad, swapping either or both (PSU / Battery) will not help. Hence, a physical evaluation by a service tech may be the best first option. (~$50? 100? or more?) But a bad socket, on a machine only about a year old (?) I would be inclined to push for warranty repair on this kind of hardware issue.

Someone else may weigh in with a different POV.

HTH.

Hey guys, I'm working on a Gateway MX6960 with a power jack issue for a friend. It was just the typical broken solder joint on the board, so I put a new jack and all that on it. Tested the connections afterwards, and everything was fine. 19V constant to all ground points on the motherboard. Put it all back together, no dice. Laptop wouldn't charge at all. Took it back apart, th/inking something lost connection. Tested again, 19V. Never seen anything like that before. :-/

All in all, motherboard is getting power, but won't charge, or turn on via AC power.

Any ideas?

I have an Alienware Sentia M3450 and for a while now I have been having problems getting it to charge. It seems as though there are problems with the power circuit board and/or DC jack because the computer does not know when it is plugged in; the battery icon in the taskbar always shows that it is plugged in and because if that I cannot tell when the plug has wiggled loose and so if I am using the laptop for any prolonged time and the plug does wiggle loose (it does not take much for this to happen) and I don't realize it, I don't receive any low battery warnings or anything; the only way I know the plug has come out in this case is when the computer completely dies and shuts off. Does anyone know why this might be happening? If it helps, the area of the computer where the DC jack is located often becomes extremely hot-- to the point where I can't even touch it.

Hi all, I'm running a HP Pavilion xt155 and Windows XP. The power port on the back of the laptop is going bad. The central pin hasn't broken off (yet), but it seems loose. My wife's Compaq has the same problem. The power supply seems to be fine when I checked it with a voltmeter, so I'm suspecting a short in the port.

Now, what are my options? BB and Circuit City said it'd be about $300 to send it off and get the port replaced. Too much $$. I've thought about opening the case and soldering a jumper wire to the port connections and installing a Radio Shack plug for my PSU, but I've also heard horror stories about opening HP laptops. Finally, there are some odd looking contacts (?) on the bottom side, could they be power contacts for a docking port or something? I checked them with a voltmeter when I had good power and got nothing, so I don't know what they are.

Any ideas, suggestions, thoughts, or comments? Thanks a bunch!
John

I have an E System 3087 laptop with power issues.
When on battery power it works perfectly, but when you plug in the mains adaptor the problems start.
the battery icon in windows keeps alternating every 2 seconds or so, showing on AC power then battery power. I have bought a new mains adaptor, but its still the same.
Everytime it changes to battery power, the screen goes dim which is really distracting.
Any suggestions would be helpfull

I am working on a friend's toshiba satellite a75-s2111 laptop computer. She gave it to me telling me it was not even turning on. I have worked with it and discovered 2 issues with the power supply. First that the power cord is a bit loose going into the computer and not always giving it power, however seems fixable when I plugged my rocketfish universal adaptor into it (piece 41 was used, even though this specific computer is not on capatibility list, which is what similar toshibas listed used).

However there is a second problem with the power supply that I am not sure how to even begin fixing. When the cord is plugged in and the computer is off, the power cord light on the front of the computer shows green and the battery light shows red. While in this state, the battery seems to charge some. If I turn it on, the power cord light and the computer on lights turn green, and the battery light turns off. The power is then drained from the battery and not from the power cord. The computer shutting down from lack of power when the battery is drained and refusing to run completely if I try to run it without the battery.

How do I go about fixing this second problem or is it even fixable? I do not want to suggest trying out a new battery unless I know for sure that would solve the problem, otherwise it would be $100 wasted if it does not work.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

Does sound as if the battery is dead, however I can understand your reluctance to buy another should that not be the real fault.

I am sure there are other more experienced people here that know about electrical circuits. If it were me I'd try and get hold of replacement power cord, exactly the same as the old one.
I'd take my Tosh to shops selling second hand Toshes and ask to use thier power cord to test connection. Or even ask about trying a new battery before you buy.
I might buy a new cord from Ebay.

If its an old machine then it will probably be the battery. And Tosh batteries when they go they just go!

Let us know what happens, I have a Tosh so maybe my fate will be yours

I have an HP Pavillion v6500 laptop that belongs to a friend. It's preloaded with Vista so it cant be that old. What is happening is that when the power button is depressed all the LED's flash on for a second, including the power indicator, and then it just shuts off. I've tried this with just the battery and with just the power cord and no battery. Either way it does the same thing. This laptop does have a light that surrounds the power input and it does light up indicating that power is getting to the unit which indicates to me that the power supply is working. If anyone has any experience with this type of problem and would like to share some input I would greatly appreciate it. I'm not reluctant to open the unit up and do some soldering or such as long as I get some conclusive and reliable info.

Thanks

My letter to Mr. Michael Dell

Dear Mr. Dell,
I realize that there is an extremely small chance of this letter ever reaching your desk, and I guess that is the reason I have never written a letter of 'issue' or 'complaint' to a company. I have little faith that it will ever make a difference.
However, I am so extremely disappointed.... at the moment, and I feel I must do 'something' for my own peace of mind.....
I am a single mom ... raising 2 kids, alone. I have 4 desktop computers ("hand me downs" from friends). I have been able to fix almost every single problem that has ever occured.......with all my desktops. I have replaced fans..... installed hardware....set up a complete wireless networking system etc.. (I understand this may not be impressive to you, but I have had no computer classes or nor have I ever been taught anything....)
Six months ago I made the decision to purchase a laptop. I was looking for small... convenient and inexpensive. This would just be a luxury for me to check email and have a few files on hand for when I go somewhere.
I did a lot of research... and talked to several friends... My brother has 2 HP's and loves them... but he started having problems with one of them (it was TWO years old)....I wanted a more 'reliable' laptop....... LONG story short... I decided on DELL...
I purchased the Dell 1000 (service tag # 8MFXZ51) on Feb. 19.
It has been less than six months and a few days ago I start... Read more

This is what has started popping up on my new laptop. When I say new, its less than a week old! The AC power supply IS a Dell 45w AC adapter, it's the one that came with the machine! Anyone have any idea what the issue might be?

Hello all,

Really frustrated here, hopefully someone can help me out. I am working on a laptop that was damaged with a big glass of water. Luckily, the laptop was off when the water was spilled, but was turned on about 8 hours later. The laptop had some serious problems, but after a little cleaning, it turns on. Here is my problem.

The AC adapter has a solid green light.
The AC adapter keeps the machine running.
The machine will also run off of the battery by itself.
The AC adapter won't charge the battery.

Also, the laptop won't "recognize" the AC adapter. The screen gets brighter when I plug in the cord like it supposed to, and the laptop runs off the AC, but the power light on the laptop is not lit up. Windows says that the laptop is running of battery. When plugged in, it says there is 3456 hours of time left (Basically infinite), but when I unplug, it says 50 minutes or whatever is left on the battery.

What could be going on?

I had a working acer extensa 2200 laptop which had badly damaged hinges, covers, screen, bezel, so I purchased an identical one on eBay that had a dead mobo. I then put the good motherboard into the good body and powered it up last night and it was working ok, except the keyboard wasn't working. I left it charge up the battery last night and then today, took out the keyboard and rectified that situation except now, the power connector is not working. I plug in working adapter and it is not getting power, I tried both connectors from both laptops, no joy. It powers up alright, but only from battery. This is really frustrating as it was working. When I put the adapter into the dc jack, I notice a little flash of light just as it touches it, is this normal, well, I've never seen it before, what does this mean? any advice please?

So, I switched out the power cord, tried fn f2 f3, plugged in a different outlets and still the results are the same- giant paperweight. My trouble all started with downloading Windows 10. The computer crashed constantly, lost power out of the blue, and some other annoyances. I have uninstalled that beast from ***, but encountered issues though less frequently.
What I am getting from the previous posts is that I need a new mother board, right? That seems expensive or techie.  Is there some other means to just charge my battery that doesn't involve another computer?  I have hardly used this refurbished hunk of junk. I refuse to ever get another HP because of the problems I had with their laptops. I hope Dell isn't heading in the same direction.

Right, so my laptop turns on and the Acer splash screen appears - all good. Thdn there is a black screen with a flashing cursor... then the screen dies, and I'm back to sqaure one.

I'm fairly new with computers, but I've looked on about 7 websites on how to troubleshoot this infinite reboot problem. Each website directed me toward Advanced Boot Options, okay fine... only problem is that when I press F8 for advanced boot options, my laptop just goes back on it's infinite reboot track.

So far I've tried reseting the CMOS... which is the only thing I can do, courtesy of Acer and their ****** computers. Please help :(.
