Hard drive just keeps running lower and lower on space

Q: Hard drive just keeps running lower and lower on space

About 1-2 weeks ago, I had 15GB of space left on my SSD that is solely committed to OS and drivers. Today, I have 2.9GB left. I have downloaded nothing, and I have changed nothing. What is going on? Any programs to help me take a closer look at why my SSD space is disappearing? I've had this OS for 2 months now and it wasn't a problem until recently.

A game i was playing's website got infected with some type of malware, and ever since that happened and i was on it, I've been getting popup ads in the lower left and the lower right corners of my screen, no sound or anything. Occasionally i get redirects as well. I ran a malwarebytes quick and full scan and got nothing, a Microsoft security essentials scan and got nothing, and a adwcleaner scan and got nothing. I saw some other people had this problem, even on this website but they used combofix, which i'm not suppose to use unless told to. So yeah, hope you guys can help :3. 'Quick edit, the ads were from ad.yieldmanager, and ad.xtendmedia, if it matters.

Hi!

I have a five year old Lenovo Z560 laptop. After my last windows 10 update( 2 days ago), the driver's disk space on which windows is installed suddenly dropped to 400 MB.
I tried to clean up system files but simply after running disk cleanup the checkbox does not appears.
If anyone could help, I would really appreciate?

Best regards,
Peter

I've been having popups in the lower left and right of my pc.  I ran malwarebytes and the popups still persist.  I thought I needed to remove the 5 things that it quaranitned so I did as was still getting these things.  Now the internet explorer screens look different.  mostly white.  It is hiding areas that can be clicked but I knwo they are there because the pointer goes from an arrow to the hand when I acroll over.  the worst thing is that the popups are still there.  Not sure where to go or what to do. Your site helped me on another issue I had in the past.  Oh I tried system restore and it didnt help the screen..I think the only system restore point was after all the above.
thanksMod Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to a more appropriate forum. ~bloopie

Greetings
In windows XP when going online e.g. the page isn't aligned. At some point recently i slid some unknown key combo and now pages open different sizes so the bottom is below the toolbar line and sometimes covers it making it necessary to move it up with cursor...likewise the top.
How to relock this action would be a nice piece of info...

It showed my CPU running at a fluctuating speed of 988mhz without any programs other then Everest running. It usually stays around 988mhz but will sometimes jump up to what it is susposed to be for a few seconds then go right back down. This computer is an HP. Someone please help me.

A:Why is my physical memory running at 95% and how do I lower it

Hello Scotty and welcome to Seven Forums.

Unfortunately, I'm on a work computer and it won't let me open your attachment. But Windows 7 has a built in utility called Resource Monitor that can tell you exactly how your RAM is being utilized. Click on the Memory tab to see the specifics.

Resource Monitor

One thing about Windows 7 that takes some getting used to is how it utilizes RAM. The Windows 7 philosophy is very simple: unused RAM is wasted RAM. Even if a computer has 16GB installed, just about all of it will be assigned a specific function. Some might be cached, some might be in standby, etc. But it's gonna get used somehow, someway.

If you still have questions after reviewing the Resource Monitor, don't hesitate to post back. And if you need help deciphering Resource Monitor you can also post a screnshot.

Hi there.
I was just wondering, is there anything at all that would be wothwhile to make my computers more cost efficient, and less costly to run?
Cheers.

A:Lower computer running costs!?

What do you mean? Like to save costs on electricity? If you are using a CRT monitor, then switching to an LCD will reduce costs. Turning the computer, monitor, speakers, and printer off when not in use is a great idea.

Also using a high efficiency power supply can reduce electricity bills considerable over a few years. Here's one company's notes on efficiency and savings: http://www.pcpower.com/technology/myths/

Ok, I've had this laptop for a year, I've been bored lately decided to go back to play some ps2 emulators. My system was running them kinda slow. I didn't expect it to be super speed but I was curious. So I downloaded CPU-Z, it says my processor is running at a Bus speed of 200.00MHz which is ok, but only a x6 multiplier, which everest says SHOULD be x10. Unfortunatly, I have a locked bios, even after upgrading it. I called Asus support and they're customer service seemed to be reading straight out of a manual, I need help by people with more experience. I paid for a computer that is 2.00GHz processor not 1.2Ghz. What is wierd, is that is randomly spikes, very rarely back up to 2.00Ghz and runs pretty damn fast for the few seconds it is up. Well thx in advance, and let me know if you need anymore info, I'll leave my pc info here:

Processor
Asus F50sv x-1
Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo T6400 @2.00GHz
Code Name Penryn

AMI Bios ver 205

Motherboard:
Manufacturer - Pegatron Corporation
Model - F50sv

Hello. I'm curious as to why my monitor, an acer 1080p, will not run certain resolutions fullscreen.
For example, 1776*1000, which is the same aspect ratio, will only run at that many pixels on the screen, it will NOT stretch to fill the entire screen area.
Same for other resolutions, 1600*900, etc, and the lower it gets, the more black around the edge of the screen.

It uses the literal resolution as far as pixels are concerned, it does not scale it up after to fill the screen space.

This is the first monitor I've had that does this, and yes, it is the monitor. The effect happens even when I'm only on the desktop, should I change windows resolution.

I've looked into AMD's CCC for a setting that might allow the stretch but found nothing, and there's nothing in the monitors own basic settings that does it either.

I mainly ask this due to games/applications that I can not run at full resolution. Reducing the resolution in game to take load off of my aging GPU takes the monitor with it, loosing precious screen space.

I just recently got a wireless adapter and installed it and the drivers but i am maxing out at 3mbps on every speed test site. when i boot into Ubuntu with the same computer and same wireless card i get up to 9mbps. Please help.

A:Internet Speeds Lower than Normal Running W7

Hello geek,

Plain and simply put, Ubuntu will get faster speeds than windows. It was designed to get every last bit of bandwidth and suck it down (You can even steal it from others on the same network, but anyway...).

Windows reserves some bandwidth for things like windows update, etc. and there are many different applications that use the internet at random times: Updaters, etc.

However, sometimes a slightly older version of a wireless adapter software can be used to browse the internet a bit quicker, as I've noticed. You might try this out. Search up ways to speed up internet speeds, but be careful, because not everything that claims to increase speed will, nor is it always good for your computer.

The less 'automatic' programs you have running, likely the faster (if slightly) speeds you will get.

Hey guys. I have a question: Is it possible to overclock memory that is rated at a higher speed but is running at a lower speed on your motherboard? Ex: I have PC3200 memory in my computer. It can also run at PC2100/2700. Currently, it's running at PC2100 (the motherboard's max stock memory speed). Is it safe to overclock it to its PC2700/3200 memory speed?

A:Overclocking memory running at lower than rated speed

u would have to raise the front bus speed, you can if your cpu can handle the load

I have gone thru all the ways of trying to get rid of the running processes, but the computer will not let them go. I went to MSconfig and to START UP and unchecked a number of the processes and the computer puts them right back on. NOW I even see that they added the printer and safety remove hardware since I've been working on this.
I now have 11 processes and all I want is my Virus System.
Thanks.

Some of the icons are removed by going to their individual "contol centre". Select one that you are trying to removed, right mouse, properties and see if an option like that is available. If so, select it and poke through the options.

Hi i was wondering if anyone could help me. i discovered my dvd rom drive wasn't working the other day when i popped a pc dvd rom game into the drive. it isn't the game because i decided to test some regular movies in the drive as well and they've always worked.i tried cleaning the lens. this did nothing. i like never even really used the dvd drive except for like once! i usually just use cds. it stil reads cds fine. i decided to proceed to the reigistry to see if i could find any problems w/ the filters. i discovered my upper filter is there but my lower filter is not. it just mysteriously disappeared. does anyone know how do i get my lower filter back? i'm running on a dell dimension 4600 home edition pentium 4 on xp. also does anyone think this could be whats causing my dvds to not be read or maybe i just need a new laser? any help would be greatly appreciated. i really don't feel like dragging this thing to get fixed again!

It is more likely the case that you need to remove the upper filter as well see this article

I check My Computer and i dont see my E: drive. I checked my BIOS (i think) and i went into system information -> components -> CD-ROM and it was empty. I also checked HK something local and i found the right file some long code like 4Dxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxx and i didnt see anything lower filter or upper filter.
I have a Dell 1735 studio laptop running windows 7
heres what happened. I got an ISO of rollercoaster tycoon which i burned onto a disc on my upstarts computer (which runs XP) and i installed fine on that computer and played the game and everything was all good. I take the CD-ROM that i burned with rollercoaster tycoon and I slip it into my aforementioned laptop. some rollercoaster tycoon thing comes up, I click install and think everything is fine. When i click the .exe file to play the game, it asks me for my E: drive. i check my computer and there is no E: drive. I also cannot eject my disk now because the computer isnt detecting an optical drive, let alone a CD to eject. I also have no cd tray on my laptop, the disc just slides in and im pretty sure theres no manual eject button. I looked.
Any Help? I tried to look a bunch of stuff online. I even did one thing relating to disabling integrity checks via the command window? i dont really know what else to do. restarting and system restores didn't work.

I would appreciate any help. Thank You!

I have an HP Envy 17 notebook. My notebook has 2 hard drive slots. It came with 2 500 GB HDD's. I decided to re vamp my laptop when I got it new. I put in a 40 GB SSD as my main drive. Desiganted as the C: Drive. I didnt have money for anything larger and I had my mind set on having a fast SSD instead of a normal HDD. I also put in a 320 GB Hard drive as the secondary drive. Its my E: Drive.

I also put in 8GB of Random Access memory. It came with 4GB. I then Installed Windows 7 Ultimate to my 40 GB SSD. I had about 7 GB left after installing. I just wanted a fast boot up. And I wanted Windows to run fast and smoothly.

Awhile later My SSD started having space disappear for no reason. I wasn't installing anything new on the drive, nor was I saving anything extra to it either. The extra 7 GB dwindled down to about 200 MB. Now my notebook is always running on low disk space. I have tried removing unwanted programs. I also tried clearing out cookies, history and my cache. Even tried removing system restore and shadow copies. And also tried the windows disk cleanup utility.

Does anyone know why my SSD started to have space magically vanish? I would like the space back. And can anyone give me any other ideas on how to free space on the drive? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I cannot get my Dell Inspiron 1420 Laptop running windows vista to recognize my DVD drive, the light on it blinks, makes some noises but nothing ever shows up in "my computer" however they do show up on my device manager under DVD/CD-ROM Drives and both with yellow flags by them. One is called a "Base System Device" and gives a code 31. The second is called "TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L632H ATA Device" and gives a code 10.

I found a thread on here that said to go accessories>run>regedit>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE......but when it says to change the upper and lower limits is where i get stuck.....I HAVE NONE! they are nowhere to be found! The only thing on the right hand side is under the name column>default under the Type column>REG_SZ and under data (where i assume the upper/lower SHOULD be) all it says is "(value not set)"

If someone could please help me it would be greatly appreciated!! I have searched the web more on how to fix this issue than any research paper and I am at the end of my patience!!

But when i open "my computer", it says i only have 2 gigs of empty space out of 51 gigs. Why does this happen? Is there a way to fix it/

Hi, my drive is divided in two -- C and D drives. The C drive is where the computer's basic systems run; the D drive is just for files and for non-essential programs I've installed. The problem is that the C drive is running out of memory: about 170 MB right now. It used to be about 3 GBs. I don't know what's been filling it up, but I assume it is because of updates to windows and also to Firefox (which is installed on the C drive). I've removed as many programs as I can from it but the memory keeps dropping.

I was hoping that I could get some advice about how to resolve this problem. I can imagine two solutions: (a) remove the wall between the C and D drives or (b) learn what has filled up the C drive and how to remove/resolve. I don't know how to do either.

About my computer:
Dell Latitude D505
Win XP
Service Packs: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 AND Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 (also Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 and Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SPI)
Thank you very much.

Hi All - Basically my problem is - I have installed a 2nd (larger) Hard drive on my computer (IQON running Vista Home Premium/32 bit).

I want to transfer everything from the original HD
(HDT 722525DLA 380 ATA)
to the new one
(SAMSUNG HD 204UI ATA ((F4EG Spinpoint)) ).

I am trying to do this with DriveImage XML. This free program asks me to give sizes of partitions for the new HD before it can continue. I don't know what sizes to key in.

The original HD's capacity seems to be: Partition C - 206 GB/Recovery 26.8 GB (although I think I noticed that 500 GB was printed on the HD's top cover).

The new HD has a capacity of 2 TB.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I am no spring chicken & have only been using this technology since August. Many thanks.

When i go to my computer the drive that usually says (:e) or whatever for it, is missing. Ive been looking online on how to fix this and nothing worked, then i read to delete the upper and lower filters but my lower and upper filters are missing. How can i get them back? I read that deleting them solved the problem for some people

A:cd drive missing from MY COMPUTER. Lower upper filters missing??

It could be a hardware problem ie. seized motor in your drive.

Quick way to test this. Insert a a disc in the tray, make a note of any writing or picture you can see on the disc, push the tray in. Wait for a minute or so, then eject the disc. If the picture/writing is in the same position as when you first put it in, then your drive motor is most likely knackered.

If this is the case, only real fix is a new drive.

Not sure why your score would change, it should stay the same no matter what version of windows you have installed.

I recently up-graded my cpu from a Q8200 to a Q9400, before the up-grade my WEI for the CPU was 7.3 but with the new Q9400 im getting 7.1, yes it?s a lower number.

After looking around at other peoples scores It seems that my old Q8200 was a fast one and my new Q9400 is a slow one.

Would anyone like to comment.

Why would a chip running 300mhz faster and with more cache give a lower WEI reading?

A:Faster CPU = Lower WEI

It could very well be the processor itself. Try as they might to be consistent, there is always going to be variance in processors of the same model, even if we were to use two processors from the same production run. It's plausible that you indeed had a Q8200 that could handle more calculations per second than your current Q9400. Regardless, I wouldn't read too much into the WEI scores, as they are not a reliable indicator of real world performance.

I purchased an hp laptop and it shows the RAM as 4 GB SODIMM 1333 MHz.
The RAM specifications as given on the site are 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.
The laptop was given for repair at hp service center because the original RAM was defective according to what hp told me.

Is the new RAM same as the previous in terms of specifications ?
I am not as good at computer hardware so I'm sorry if you feel the question is very childish.

A:RAM frequency is lower than specified

The RAM is likely 1333 able to be 1600 with O.C.

My one friend in Mexico had a similar issue with a Core i7 build that was only running at 1333. Maybe this article will help about the XMP configuration in BIOS to get it to 1600.

I've been looking at RAM and am unsure which would be better:

1. Buying 3GB of PC3200 RAM with a CAS Latency of 3.0
or
2. Buying 2GB of PC3200 RAM with a CAS Latency of 2.0

I've been looking at RAM on Newegg and found 1GB sticks with 3.0 latency to be around $80, where as the 2GBs of 2.0 (split into 1GB sticks) is $240 which led me to think that I could get more RAM for the same price with a higher CAS latency.

What would be more important and why?

Thanks heaps in advance.

*BTW, the RAM is going to be used in extensivly in Photoshop and other Adobe products that seem to be rather RAM hungry, in my experience. (And maybe some gaming, too.) That may be something to consider as well when you answer.

Hello,

My gaming laptop, yesterday (or two days ago), started having lower FPS rates. When I check FPS rates it is at 300, then drops to 200 in open areas, sometimes to 150, and occasionally it drops to 70 or 80 for a few seconds. When the drops happen I can see that something is wrong.

Before my games ran smoothly now you can feel that something is unnatural about them even though the games still run. I had an FPS issue before where my game was running at only 30 FPS through out and I solved it by realizing that my ac-adapter was set to minimum power usage. Now it is a different issue and I have no idea what is causing it. I went to Dell website and downloaded latest update for my graphics card but still no progress.

An error report from my computer gave me the following today. I cannot help but wonder that perhaps this is the issue behind the problem.

i found that it depends if you click on quick match or search, the ping varies with which server you are connected to, sometimes you are connected to a server thats steam powered and sometimes your connected to a dedicated team server, the dedicated servers are the ones that you may get best connection with, the steam servers are pap.

Hi,
My audio jack recently broke, so I'm using a USB "sound card", which basically converts a USB port into an audio jack. Everything's working just fine, the problem is that it is way too loud. I'm using a pair of ear buds and VLC media player to play my music, and both are set to 1%, but the music is still much too loud. When I set both to max, I can literally use my ear buds as an external speaker. I would like some sort of way to decrease my audio output by like 99%, because it's just about 100 times too loud.

A:How to lower the audio below 1, but above 0

You cant. Simple.
try making windows default volume to 1% and then vlc volume to 1% too, see what happens

On a good many browser pages I get pop-ups in the lower right corner of the screen. Frequently it says "PLAY NOW" and "DOWNLOAD". If I were to click on the "PLAY NOW" I would get a redirect to... < http://d32.vidrecordger.com/download/bin/ww/setup.exe > Of course I have not done that. Other times the pop-up resembles an IPhone or I get a smaller "double" pop-up (first one appears then is quickly followed by another that slides over the first). I can then close (X) the top one exposing the lower one... but I cannot close it. These double pop-ups are usually topic advertising. Please help.

I desperately need help.

I bought a HP netbook a few months ago. It has NO CD drive, and the place I bought it installed all the programs, including Windows XP as the operating system.

I?ve used it without any problems for the past few months, as it is not even six month old. I worked on stuff today, and then shut down the netbook to take a break. When I booted it back up, all of the icons were GONE and the lower nav bar GONE!

There was only the blue screen you get with windows XP, and the cursor. When I click the cursor right or left, nothing happens. I can only move the cursor around.

I really depend on this netbook to make money, and I don?t have any money to take it in for repairs. I'm completely broke.

Please, please help me. Thanks

A:Icons and lower nav GONE!

Sorry about that.. Wasnt thinking.

Goto task manager -> file -> run -> type in explorer.exe and click ok.

I am now on Windows 7 Build 7201 and while I've been updating it so it fits what I want such and programs and all that I realised I had to update Realtek. Well, I did and I got the version that works for Windows 7 and its basically the same as I had for Vista really. What I'm actually confused about my speakers don't max out to what they used to do on Vista, I know my speakers aren't damaged in anyway so I'm obviously blaming either the drivers or the OS. I max everything out as possible to see how loud it goes compared to what it did on Vista and its not exactly as loud. Can anyone tell me why its like this and if there's a solution around this.

Thank you for any help.

A:Sound lower than what it used to be

What other things have you tried? Have you tried hitting up the sound icon in the control panel and checking out the settings? Do you have your microphone connected and is it running as well at the same time you are trying to say listen to music because it could be that if your mic is one for some reason, there is a setting in windows that will lower the audio volume to allow for clearer conversations through the microphone.

Is there a realtek audio control panel? Have you tried playing around with the settings in there? Let me know if that idd not help at all and I will try again

Hi,

today I thought that I haven't updated my WEI some time and ran the assessment. Now all of a sudden my processor's rating dropped from 7.7 to 7.6.
Is that normal that it drops for some strange reason or what might be causing this?

Thanks!

A:CPU WEI rating getting lower?

I would not worry about it. That is within the rounding accuracy. And the WEI does not mean much anyhow. It is just a number.

A:How do i lower my memory

Hello hariza,

It sounds like you may have a few programs running in the background. There is a way to check that so what were going to do is:

Start search > type msconfig > hit enter > accept the UAC prompt > browse to the 'startup' tab and post back what runs at start-up please

More than likely there is some programs that don't need to run at start-up -- not only will this improve boot times, it will also lower memory consumption at idle.

Hello,
I have been having pop up problems in both Google chrome and ie7 for the past couple of weeks and cannot seem to get rid of them.  I run avast on my computer and a full scan does not find anything, I also was told to try registry mechanic and while that seemed to find a lot of problems, it did not solve the pop up issue.

This is my first time using these forums and unfortunately I am not all that computer savy so if you could gently walk me through a fix I would greatly appreciate it .

I read through the preparation guide and ran the DDS.  Hopefully this is what I was suppose to copy and paste.
Thank you so much for your time!

I purchased a new Toshiba laptop with Win 8.1. On my old XP Dell, I was able to copy a 699MB folder of music MP3 files to a CD to play in my car. I've done it many times, and have 8 folders on my computer that I frequently copy to CDs for that purpose. In the past, I've copied 700 MB of files to a CD without difficulty, so I learned to maximize the number of files by storing the data in groups of 699 MB to avoid overloading a disk.

I tried to copy those folders to a CD using the new Win 8.1 machine, and have discovered that the CD capacity is only about 696 MB. I'm using the same CDs, and attempting to copy the same files. The only difference is the operating system and the new hardware. When I contacted Toshiba, the tech said Windows 8.1 stores files differently on CDs and the capacity is about 2MB less than on older machines.

Can this possibly be true?!? Is this a Windows 8.1 problem, or a hardware problem? Do I need to use my older XP computer to maximize the number of files I can store on a CD? Can anyone explain what's happening? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

A:Lower CD Capacity on Win 8.1?

If you want to maximise your file storage I suggest you use your old computer however you could buy a bigger size disc and store the music from your new computer. Your choice!

Hello,

I've noticed a decreased performance of my hdd (seagate barracuda 7200.11 500GB Firmware SD1A) in windows 7, extracting and copying files takes longer than in vista. I'm assuming it is a win 7 /driver problem since yesterday it was running fine on vista. Also it is a lot quieter. I have installed the latest intel_inf without succes. The hdd is running in AHCI mode.

A:lower hdd performance

Problem solved. The intel infinst update utility just seemed to install drivers. When i checked in device manager, windows was still using the old drivers so i had to update them manually.

CPU Utilization:Processor utilization is high
The average processor utilization during the trace was high. The system will consume less power when the average processor utilization is very low. Review processor utilization for individual processes to determine which applications and services contribute the most to total processor utilization.
Average Utilization (%) 5.36

i ran an energy report ( through elevated command prompt) and this came up high, is there any way i can adjust this? im runnin w7 home premium on a laptop, i think if i adjust this it might affect my battery life in a good way that is

A:help:need to lower CPU Utilization

The best way to reduce CPU utilization is identify the most resource-intensive programs. Get rid of anything you don't use. Security programs are usually pretty high up there. I recommend using Microsoft Security Essentials, as it is pretty lightweight.

Hi everyone, I've just bought a 19'' TFT/LCD monitor for my Pc. It has the resolution of 1280 x 1024. This is my first Lcd and I didn't pay much attention on the fact that the resolution is too high. So after I changed the display to fit the new monitor, everything on the screen is now painfully small. If I adjust the resolution lower than 1280 x 1024, the text would appear not as smooth as on my old CRT. Is there anyway I can make the screen look bigger without that problem because I miss those big fat 800 x 600 texts and pictures.

I posted this on a Counter Strike board but since it's happening in other games as well I figured it is most likely a general hardware issue.

My specs are:
AMD Athlon XP 2500+
512MB RAM
Geforce 6600GT

I used to have a Geforce 4 MX440 until about a month ago, when I got a 6600GT. My FPS was awesome for about two weeks, pretty much 100 constant. I've been having mouse/keyboard lag in CS since I got the card and started fixing it by setting hl.exe priority to low (A known issue in Counter Strike and the most common workaround for it). A few nights ago I started noticing lower FPS, to the point where now I get 50 in a big area and I don't even get 100 when I'm staring at the floor. Changing the CPU priority back to normal hasn't fixed this.

Any ideas about how this could have come about or how to fix it?

After connecting my new laptop to the my 30" tv with an HDMI cord and then removing it later, the resolution was messed up. I received a notification bubble saying that my resolution was at the recommended settings. I went to my screen resolution settings and the slider said it was at 1366x768 ,which is the max on my computer, but below was a warning saying, "Your resolution is lower than 1200x900. Some items might not fit on your screen". If there is any way I can fix this please let me know.

Thanks,
Ryan

A:Your resolution is lower than...

That would be because the Flat Screen you are using is unable to show anything higher. You can verify that information in the manual for your Flat Screen.

Hey guys I have Nvidia 7900's in my M9700. One card is running at 76C and the other at 84C. I'm wondering what I need to do to lower the temps, and what exactly would that do for me?
The Fix: So I don't know why it happens, but if I make my laptop hibernate and then turn it back on it works properly with no lag. That's all I do haha. Now my cards are running at 70C and 78C. Meh, it works though.

A:how to lower gpu temp

Maybe you have dust in laptop. It will be good to clean it. If you can't do that, contact some who's working that.
Also it will be good to have a cooler on your laptop. If you already don't have, you may look at this. It's from CM and is pretty good.

Yes it does. To record whats on screen uses a lot of system resources and creates extra hard drive activity.

on my old setup, which was really just the same comp, minus a vid card, stick of ram and a new PS, i had awesome framerates in Source based games, and I could run bf2142 on high. i had an xfx 7600gt 256 xxx then, with only 1gig of pc5400 ram. then i went out and bought an 8800 gts 320mb when they first came out, and another stick of ram... and of course, a new power supply... but thing is, I get WORSE fps in Source games now (ie. tf2, day of defeat source) and can't even play 2142 on medium! i've reformmated loads of times since the upgrade(not to fix it, just to clean er out now and then) and tried a hundred different drivers.

is it my cpu? maybe still the power supply isn't big enough? it's a 500w ps. certainly wouldn't hurt to upgrade it further, but, i don't want to go spend money if i don't have to.

A:upgrade but lower fps?

Check the amps available on the PSU for the 12v rail. You will need about 26A (check your card for exact aount), but a 500 should be big enough.
As you have reformatted, have you got the mobo chipset drivers and nvidia drivers for the 800 instaled? sounds like one of these is most likely the problem

I have R7 260X 2GB OC from MSI and the card is old maybe 3 months or so. Now everything is fine with it but I noticed that my Mem. clock speed on GPU-Z is 1250MHz and core clock is 1050MHz while everywhere on the internet I see Mem. clock 1650Mhz and core clock 1150MHz. Just google it and you'll see that every 260x has higher clocks than mine. Since it's OC it should be even higher than stock what's up with this?

A:My GPU clocks are lower than others

Have you tried getting something like GPU Tweak(http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=9&m=ASUS+GPU+Tweak+for+Graphics+cards). Or using AMD overdrive to overclock it back to stock speeds. A reason that the GPU's "stock" speed is lower than others is because you CANNOT make a exact clone of a GPU/CPU from silicon there are a few variables that come in to play. And the card may underclock its self so that its "safe".
Hope this helps.

My headphones are mega loud for some reason. Right now 0 is the best volume setting lol. In XP there was a wave multiplier in the volume mixer that I used to fix that, but I don't see that in Vista. And it was annoying, because I had to change that every time I restarted. Is there a multiplier in some config file somewhere I can change to fix this permanently or something? Thanks

A:How can I lower the volume more?

Right-Click your task bar
Click Properties
Click "Notification Area" tab
Checkmark "Volume"
Click "OK" button

Your volume control should present itself as an icon next to the system clock

Clicking on it will present you with the master volume control, clicking on mixer will allow you to select the volume for individual applications

If it's still too loud you could go into the control panel and go to SOUND and tweak the settings there.

If all else fails they do sell some headphone with volume control built in and you can control it that way

So I'm having a problem. I'm using Google Chrome and esp. when I'm on FB playing games etc. it's very slow, loading takes a while when I move my cursor around it takes a while to actually get to the place where I moved it, and the game skips a lot, another problem that I'm having is when I'm browsing the internet, all of my tabs pop out and go into new windows..without me doing anything! this happens every time, all the time! and I keep getting pop ups from Chrome saying my flash player is unresponsive..
Also, when I go to Task Manager, and under processes.. I have like 10 "chrome.exe" ..is that normal?
I don't know why I have so many..every time I open Google Chrome and look into processes there's always about 10 of them..more or less. and I only have one Google Chrome opened.

I heard that if CPU usage is high..it can cause these problems, things not loading/are slow/and are skipping/crashing.. etc..but I don't know for sure that CPU is the problem..it's hard to tell but I am having a lot of similar issues.

Is there anything I can do?

I tried other browsers but IE crashes on me nonstop and FF doesn't load at all..when I'm on FB it takes half an hour to load a game...

A:Is there any way to lower CPU usage..? ++

UPDATE*** I just realized that my laptop's power plan was set to "power saver" from last time I disconnected it, and forgot to set it back..I always had it set to "balanced", but is it ok if I set it to "high performance"? or will that cause problems..?
So..everything seems to be running ok..my game anyway.

but still wondering about the 10 processes that Chrome has in task manager and..if there is a way to lower CPU possibly and how my tabs are always popping out of Chrome into new windows..
for now my game seems to be running smoothly..but will keep an eye on everything.

Hi,

I still use an old CRT 19" monitor (Philips 109p4). It displays best, sharpest picture at 1152x864.

But Windows 7 "thinks" and persists that my Philips should be fed with 1600x1200 image (it calls it "Recommended resolution") . But it's too much for my monitor - and the picture quality suffers (everything gets a bit blurry).

What's the problem, one could ask, simply go to the display settings and set the screen resolution to 1152x864. And here's where the tricky part begins! Windows 7 only pretends to let me set lower resolution! The desktop size changes to 1152x864, but the nVidia graphic card still generates 1600x1200 image (which is confirmed by OSD function in my monitor). Thus the smaller desktop gets smoothly (with some kind of antialiasing or rather bilienear texture filtering) magnified (projected) to fit the big phisycal 1600x1200. Result - lack of sharpness.

I can understand that this trick may be usefull for some kind of users with some type of LCD displays. But in my case - CRT - this sucks big time!

How to make Win7 *RELLY* set the resolution to a lower one?

Thanks,

latet
(Win7 RC 7100, nVidia GF 8600GT).

I have exactly the same problem and still no solution.

I have a Pentium 4 3.2 GHZ. My friends 2.8ghz usally uses 1% of the cpu. My cpu usage shown on the task manager is usually 25%. When I play games, this rises to 100% and my cpu overheats and computer shuts down automatically. I would just like to know if there are any settings for windows xp professional that allows you to configure the amount of cpu usage.

A:Windows XP lower cpu usage?

You can't limit the amount of CPU usage or there would not be enough power to play a game. You can, however, buy a new fan to keep your computer from overheating.

This is a weird problem that has popped up recently. I used to have no problems in resolutions under 1280x1024 on my 17 inch LCD hooked to my PC via a DVI cable. Recently, I bought a game that resizes the screen to 1024x768 and the screen goes black or its garbled. If I try to set that resolution in Windows, it does the same thing. I've upgraded all my video drivers, chipset drivers, etc. Is the DVI cable bad or is the video card going bad? Everything works fine in native 1280x1024 resolution.
I've got a Radeon 9700 Pro by the way.

Any tips would be appreciated as I'm stuck right now.

Hi!

I keep getting ads in the lower corners of all of my browsers (the ones in Firefox get blocked by Adblock but are visible when I disable it), mostly in the shape of iPhones but regular ads and sometimes videos also appear. At times I also get redirected to other pages when I click any link. I am currently running Windows 7 64 Bit, and I have tried different Spyware software without success.

Any help would be appreciated.

hi gurus,

i've been afflicted with a pop up appearing on either the lower left or right corner (it was happening on both corners...lucky me!) of my browser (ie8 and google chrome). i'm running win7, 64bit. what i've done so far after reading threads with similar issues is:

1) have run malware bytes (found nothing);
2) ran superantispyware and deleted what was found (found 173 ad tracking cookies);
3) ran rogue killer and fixed hosts;
4) rebooted after any process that has required it.

i use ESET smart security (scan found no threats).

after doing the above, i still have some occurance of the pop up, but it is happening less than before i ran the above. any assistance to get rid of the bug i missed would be greatly appreciate...tia.

Hello friends, i have been having problems with my laptop for a while now.
I have a Dell Studio XPS 13 laptop using Windows 8, i have had it for a while now and it used to work perfectly until recently, it started to give me way less internet speed than what i am currently paying for, even if there are no other devices connected to the internet, it only gives me around 3 mbps, compared to the 10 i'm paying for.
When i connect with other devices to my internet it gives me normal internet speed.
I have used speedtest to check my download and upload speed in this laptop to compare it with my other devices, they all give me around 12 or 13 mbps download, and when i use the exact same test on this one i end up having around 3 mbps with fluctuating results. (The test was made at the same distance from the router in all the devices).
I have tried a lot of things people have recommended to fix this problem with no positive results. I'm stressing out
I was wondering if somebody could give me a hand in trying to fix this problem. Thanks in advance!

hello,

my name is DarkWazaman. I just recently (like yesterday) noticed that i cant adjust my screen brightness with the shortcut keys (f2 and f3) and in the power options.

when i have my laptop plugged in the brightness is at full, when i have it unplugged, using the battery, its lower than half so it can last longer.

right now is unplugged and the brightness is at max, when i touch the brightness keys it show its all the way down but i cant raise or lower it and the brightness stays the same .

dont know if keeping it connected to my lg tv via hdmi for a month maybe changed some settings or something. also i connected and usb receiver for wireless keyboard and mouse.

i had no problems during this time, when i was connected to my lg led tv. even playing for hours some video games like godfather 2, evil dead regeneration. but just this days i noticed it went total shutdown after a while of playing resident evil 5, guess it made it overheat alot and it shut down or hibernate or sleep. so what i did was i put a big fan at max towards my laptop so it wouldnt overheat and it worked but i decided to disconnect it from the tv and use it normally.

but thats when i noticed this problem.

I have 2 580 gigabyte cards in sli but can't see any benefit over my previous 460 cards. I've had to tune down graphics in games to about average. on a scale of 1-5 in graphics quality (1 being poor, 5 being best), my card ranks at perhaps a 3.5

My monitor is connected to my first card, and PhysX is streamed from the second (Nvidia configuration):

I have the most recent Nvidia update. Nvidia is set to "let the gaming application decide quality". The cards seem to run a bit hot too, unless I pull a giant fan up to the case to cool it down. My case doesn't seem to have very strong fans, however.

I ran this test: Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark with the most recent version, and my 1st card (monitor) had a 25% load while my 2nd (Physx) had a 99%. There were artifacts as soon as I started running the test (not in the windows environment, only through the test's picture).

I don't know whats going on, perhaps I should test the cards each one by one to see if they stand well alone? The monitor doesn't have its driver, but I wouldn't think that would really matter. Any suggestions, I would gladly welcome your help

Hello.

I'm not sure this belongs in this forum - the heading for "audio and video" said video cards and my problem is about the screen itself. Anyway, if this isn't the right forum tell me and I'll post again.

I have a MAG Innovision 17" LCD monitor, model 780, prod. # MS-776, on Win XP.

Currently it's identified as a "plug and play" device. My current settings are 1280x1024 32 bit (highest available in the settings menu). In order to play a game I want to change the setting to 800x600. When I do that, the screen goes blank and I get a "mode not supported" message from the screen.

I tried looking for appropriate drivers but I couldn't find one for my model (not even on the MAG website).

Can anyone tell me what I should do to make it work?

Thank you,
Zohar

A:Switching to lower resolution with MAG LCD

The resolution shouldn't be an issues. It could be that with the lower resolution the refresh rate gets set too high for the monitor.

Try forcing the screen to [email protected] and see how that works.

I just picked up a Windows 7 book at the bookstore (can't remember the title), but it indicated that the maximum RAM that can be recognized varies by edition. I think this is where it stood:

Home Basic: 8 Gig
Premium: 16 Gig
Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise: 192 Gig

I was surprised by this, as I don't remember seeing in the version matrix that Microsoft posted. It won't be long before 16 Gig is not such a huge number. And I am glad I went for Pro, but my motivation was solely XP Mode. Another goody I had not expected to find is EFS.

A:Max RAM is lower with Home and Premium?

Vista was the same - the x64 version dictated how much RAM you could use. However, Windows 7 increased the max quite a bit! Don't forget that starter is limited to 2GB.

Hello, i noticed a strange behavoiur on my Elitebook Folio 1020 H9V72EA running Ubuntu 14.04.3 64 bit: The core-m processor wont maintain high frequencies during longtime high-load-scenarios (thats how it is supposed to work). But: - On battery power it constantly runs on approx. 1450 MHz- docked and on ac-power it drops down to approx.1250 MHz That does not seems to be right - anyone with windows having the same behaviour ? Kind regards, HPUser2k15

A:Longtime CPU-Frequency lower when on AC

I do find it odd, that when you're on AC power the CPU frequencies  are actually lower when they should be higher. I will say, I have some experience with HP Core M products and I've found they throttle quite often, even when temps are good.  I think it's a power limiting issue or TDP issue. It seems to be more prevalent on HP products than other OEMs.  It's extremely noticable when doing something like gaming, where the GPU and CPU are being hit hard.

Just curious if lower is supposed to always be better for each setting. Also, when people talk about memory timings, what order do they list them in? Because my motherboard goes CAS, TRCD, TRAS, TRP but i have a feeling that most people list the TRAS last since its always higher than the others.

So anyway, i can get mine down to 2-3-5-3 but i've noticed that its actually a bit faster when i go 2-3-6-3. Why do some people have a relatively high number in there sometimes even with high quality ram? I often see a 9 or an 11.

A:Memory timings. Is lower ALWAYS better?

Ive never seen 9 or 11.

Also, the only reason why I can think 2-3-4-3 is slower then 2-3-6-3, is maybe your ram cant run at those latencys at its full speed, so it lowers the actual speed of the ram, allowing lower latencys.

right now ddr3 is a lil bit better than ddr2 but its so much higher in prices.

A:when is ddr3 going to lower in price?

Hi Chilloh,

Yeah, for the price vs performance, it just isn't worth getting DDR3 right now. My guess is to give it around a year or so before prices get reasonable. I would check out the DDR2 1600 MHz sticks. They have some reasonable prices.

If you are thinking of getting a new motherboard, see if it will support both DDR3 and DDR2 for future upgrades. You may have to find the DDR3 boards online.

I'm sure that it's something that I've done wrong in the past but I have searched everywhere within my file systems but to no avail.

Please help Best wishes Derek Miles in the UK.

I am a Windows 7 user that has recently begun seeing pop up ads that show up in the lower right hand corner and am randomly redirected to sites other than those I intended to go to. I usually use Google Chrome as my browser. I have run Malwarebytes Anti Malware and it is not finding any infection.

A:Pop ups in lower right with random redirects

Hello

I was curious to know. I heard there could be firmware preinstalled that forbids low write speeds. I'm trying to achieve 4x

I burn with DiscJuggler. It reports 30x-40x speeds, despite setting 4x everywhere in it. I'm using Sony blanks.. or could they be the conflict ?

My friend said to try Nero DiscSpeed.. to hopefully lower the drive's minimum write speed.. I set 4x here and there (been a while), but it did no difference.

Could this be somewhere I have to hunt down in the BIOS ?

My drive is a..

hp dvd-ram gh40l scsi cdrom device (Device Manager)

SuperMulti DVD Burner with LightScribe Technology drive (PC specs page)

Please assist

A:Lower CD-R write speed ?

I do a lot of Audio CD burning as I have a recording studio. I use 8X as my audio CD burn speed "standard". This allows compatibility with almost all audio CD players. I've been using the 8X for about 10 years and have burned hundreds of audio CD-R's and have never had a CD come back as "unplayable" or "skipping". I only use JVC-Taiyo Yuden "Professional" ink jet printable CD-R blanks, but the brand does not dictate the burn speed, its the drive.

The burn speeds are hardware dependent. e.g. most SATA CD/DVD burners will only go do wn to 16X (except one model LG CD/DVD burner). PATA (IDE) burners of recent production will go down to 8X for audio CD burning. Although there may be some software utility that will change/lower speeds, I havent found one. I have Nero and use Nero Burning ROM for all my CD Burning. I have a bank of 5 USB connected PATA burners that I use for my CD production.

With CD burning software, you must have a CD-R blank loaded in the drive BEFORE you attempt to burn, so you can set the burn speed. If you try to set the burn speed first, without a disc in the drive it will only default to its highest burn speed.

Other recording engineers, that I've talked to on recording forums agree on the 8X speed.

The only CD burner drives that I know that will burn at 4X are very old (obsolete/out of production) PATA (IDE) drives. The last one I had was one that came with a Windows 98 PC.

When I try to use the lower case B it does not work, only if I use shift and upper case. It must not Be the keyboard or the upper case would not work. Short of reinstalling windows how do I fix it?? In case you are wondering, the word keyBoard I typed with a capital B and the spell checker changed it. I do not have a clue as how to fix this. TIA

A:Lost My Lower Case B

If it's only the one key, I'd still suspect the keyboard, whether it works with shift or not. Is it possible to try another to make sure?

My headphones are too good and i dont have any other ones so they can be REALLY loud even on 1 out of 100 sound.

So is there a way or a program that can lower the volume more than windows 7 allows.

A:PC How can i lower my sound even more than 1 without muting it (W7)

you should be able to lower the volume even more by clicking on the audio icon on the notification bar and selecting mixer, lowing the volume of the particular application will silence things more, it's a little bit of a pain when using full screen applications and games but still, it does the job.
