hello everyone. recently i installed xp on an old computer, and it was working fine for about a week with normal usage. it was a modded version called xp essential 2, with themes and programs pre installed. currently, this same xp is installed on 5 other old computers working without a hitch.

here are the computer specs:
processor: pentium III-S tualatin 1400MHz
ram: 512MB
mobo: qdi advance 10t
graphics: nvidia riva tnt2 model 64

now, here is the problem: after about a week, when you restart the computer, upon logon an error message pops up saying something about a missing shared dll file. click ok, it logs on fine. in the start menu, under "all programs" there is another folder called "programs", which is empty. before the problem occurred, you could mouse over this folder with no problem. after the error message, however, when you mouse over it, after the delay of them popping up, when the sub menu should show up, the computer just immediately shuts off with no warning, almost as if i unplugged it. i turned it back on, got the same error message, clicked ok, ran ccleaner registry scan and when it scanned activex and class issues, the computer would switch off, like before. i have reinstalled twice, but after the exact same amount of time, i get the same problem.

this problem turned up after i got a new processor for the computer. it originally had a celeron 1ghz (slow as hell), so it needed an upgrade. after i installed the n... Read more

I have a widescreen monitor. I had some issues with my computer and had a tech guy look at it.

Everything is fine now, but my screen. It is not full screen, but it is cropped up. Meaning that my viewing of the internet is all cropped together.
Can someone me?

Right-click anywhere on the desktop background and then choose Display Settings. What does it show for the resolution? Does it have (recommended) next to it? What about the orientation? This should be Landscape. Are you sure the correct drivers are loaded?

go to your mfg's website and download the win 8.1 drivers - not all 8 drivers work with 8.1, you will also to continue to get the 8.1 update nag screen until you update

So yesterday automatic Windows update installed IE10, today I noticed that links in certain applications open in IE10 instead of my configured default browser, which every link from this or any other application used to open in before that update and the reboot that followed the update.
I checked the Default Programs section in the system control panel, expecting maybe Microsoft wanted to get themselves in any more trouble with the EU and changing the default to IE. This was not the case however, all the associations were still pointing to the configured default browser, I noticed however I could not uncheck the defaults already set.
So despite the obvious configuration being correct, links would still open in IE10 even after yet another reboot.
I went ahead and checked the registry associations, and found that http(s) protocol as well as htm(l) filetypes were associated with Internet Explorer with various EditFlags set (presumably to prevent changing them through the user interface, or to ignore the user interface settings).

Seriously Microsoft? Don't you have enough trouble yet?

I'd avoid IE10 and uninstall the update. It's riddled with bugs.

So, my laptop which has the 64-bit version of vista, freezes up after a few minutes of start up. Then the screen/display messes up and there are bars of colors everywhere. It might just be the display issue that's causing the freezing, but I'm really unsure. I might be able to post a picture of what's wrong, but I can't seem to find my camera atm.

Edit: My laptop's an HP Pavillion, I have Avast! and Commodo installed for protection, and my graphic card's an ATI Radeion (I can't remember what type, sorry.)

A:Windows Vista freezes up after a few minutes of start up, and then the screen/display messes up

I'm currently facing three chronic Vista problems, so I decided to combine them into one thread.

1. System Restore gives me an incorrect parameter error when I launch it, when I click OK (the only option, it quits). I don't know the exact error message.

2. Windows update gives me error 8007002 when I go and check for updates; all my update history has also been wiped. (The check runs for a while, then stops and gives me 8007002.

3. My internet stops working after resuming from sleep.

I've recently crashed and re-installed Windows XP on my Dell M4300. Completely removing all old data. After installing windows, I updated everything via Windows Update so that everything is good to go.

Now, when I startup windows xp, I get the normal Win XP splash screen: http://tinypic.com/r/2dt5b0g/6

After it loads, the screen immediately changes to this: http://tinypic.com/r/ivkca1/6

And it will stay that way until I manually shut it off. Upon turning it back on, the exact same thing happens. Notice that the messed up screen always looks differently: http://tinypic.com/r/5arg4m/6 (notice the different colors)

However, I can start up in safe mode just fine! No problems whatsoever!

What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

A:Solved: Error, Screen messes up on boot but works in safe mode, Win XP

When Windows will only start in Safe Mode, it's typically a sign that you've got a bad third-party driver installed (since they are not loaded in safe Mode) and in your case I would have to say it's the video/graphics driver. In Safe Mode, Windows loads it's own low-res generic video driver, hence no stripes on the screen.

Download the correct video driver from Dell if you don't have a driver CD for your M4300, and install it in Safe Mode.
You can get internet access on your M4300 (to download driver from Dell's website) by invoking the Advanced Startup Options and choosing "Safe Mode with Networking".

It's so weird. I can do absolutely everything else on my computer but when I open Windows Media Player to listen to some music the pointer on the screen starts vibrating. Now i'm no techy, by far. I thought it might be my mouse so I wen't and bought a new one. A wireless one this time instead of having to worry about that stupid cord. But as soon as the player opens, the pointer on the screen starts jumping up and down. I don't even have to be playing music yet for that to happen. And it doens't matter if I play music or not. The eniter time the player is open, the stupid thing vibrates. Even if i minimize it and jump on the internet. Anyone know what's going on? And try to dumb down your responses because as I said, i'm no techy.

A:Every time I open my Windows Media Player my pointer on my screen messes up

Could be several things causing that. Easiest to try is; Open Media player, click on 'help' in the bar at the top, in the drop down box, choose 'check for updates'.
See if that cures it.
If not, try, Start, All programs, Windows updates. If no improvement, it could be that you have one or more 'codecs' missing from your system, ( should have been covered by the 'updates' point I mentioned above ), but you can install a very comprehensive codec pack, that I have used before with good results.
Copy and paste this link into a new tab in your web browser; (or just double-click on it)
http://download.cnet.com/Media-Player-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10749065.html

Note that you can uninstall this afterwards if you don't think it helped.

Hope one of these works for your jittery cursor !!

Hello, and thanks for giving some time to try and help. Yesterday i installed 2 1 gig ram sticks (pc3200) to my existing 2 512mb sticks (pc2700), and everything worked without a hitch. I mention this because it was the only thing i can remember that changed on my computer, hardware/software wise, all day. Late that night i was playing call of duty 4, and my pc froze. Taking this as a sign that it was time to goto bed, i switched off my pc and did just that. Waking up this morning i switched on my pc everything was fine, it geos through the loading screen, then when its suppose to get to the welcome/login screen, nothing comes up, its just a pixelated mess (http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/8937/img0001ei0rb4.jpg it didn't always look exactly like this, as I've tried to fix the problem the screen looks different.) The mouse cursor appears, turns into an hourglass sometimes, and i can even move it around for a little, but then it totally freezes.

Thinking it was the ram, i took out the two new sticks, but the same thing still happens. The computer boots into safe mode/safe mode with networking just fine, and that what I'm actually using to type this.

While playing Battlefield 2142, my audio on the headset (Cyber Acoustics?) began to mess up

Now I have low sound even at maximum volume, and when I play music it fades in and out, making strange changes. However when I change to balance to one side it works perfectly, and if I do a speaker test it sounds fine. Earlier I listened to my speakers (Realtek) and they were fine, but later on they started to have the same effect.
I temporarily fixed both headset and speakers by rolling back my sound drivers and restarting the computer. But right now only my speakers are good. Now when I play music on my headset, it switches from bad to good quality. I'm not sure if the game had anything to do with it.

I don't know what else to call it.

It's a Canon BJC-250, I've had it 4 years, (this is the 2nd PC it's used with) and it's occasionally done this. Can't seem to pinpoint when and why.

Every now and then, usually in the middle of printing, but then for awhile after when I try and continue it, it only prints a few little meaningless symbols in the upper left corner or along the top, then rolls the paper through.

I go in to the printer (it still shows what's left of the print job, or the new one starting) and cancel it and start again, and it does it again.

Later, the printer seems to work okay again.

I was just printing 8 pages (it usually prints much more, but I don't usually print things that have too many pages) on the last page it stopped. Said there was a problem and did I want to retry or cancel? I kept retrying and pushing the reset on the printer, and it kept printing out the symbols on top.

I cancelled it and highlighted what I had left and tried to print it (selection) which was only 1/2 a page and it kept doing it. I tried copy pasting it in WordPad (instead of WORD2000 where I had it) and it did the same. (WordPad doesn't have so much, and sometimes it works better).

I saved the 8 pages in WORD and probably later will be able to print the last 1/2 page.

But, just wondered once and for all why it does this?

This is WIN 98 SE (the first PC I had with the printer was WIN 98)

Not really sure if this is a WIN problem... Read more

I have a guy that used to work at my company install more ram memory on my computer. He said he would also put XP Pro on it...I told him I liked Home but he said I could have both and it would work better and faster for me. He assured me it would do no damage, but it has or maybe just messed things up. I turn on and pick which I want then in Home nothign works...not my favs, not typing a site in go line not clicking on links...I get a message Application not available. I have done a restore to yesterday on it but it didn't help.

Can I uninstall pro and not lose any info and is it easy enough for an old lady that knows little about puters to do?

Is there anyone that I can get to help me or do it for me thru remote assistant? Please help, I am handicapped and work from home online and need my puter working right for me.:

A:XP PRO messes up XP HOME...help.

unless that guy gave you a legal xp pro cd, you have an illegal operating system on your computer. That guy need to be shot if thats the case.

Did he partition a drive to install xp pro? or was it installed on a second drive on your computer? does the nonworking application work in pro? Finally do you have a xp cd or recovery cd for home?

Basically all you need to do is to format the partition/drive that xp pro was installed on to get rid of it - start xp home, go to my computer, highlight and rightclick the drive xp pro is on, then click on format. Finally insert your xp home cd and boot to the recovery console. Once there just type fixmbr and it should take care of your dual boot screen.

I have these 2 files I can't delete.
Prev I had about 15 I couldn't delete, but finally I was able to delete those through command prompt, and restarting, etc.
These 2 files [ mkv and avi ] will NOT delete at all. Also once I try to delete you will have a screen come up that says "Identify item -- Recycling" But it doesn't work and when you do that it takes the normal look of the download//the faves etc off by making a magnifying glass on all 3 and move around in a circle like its searching.

I have tried command prompt, deleting and re-adding explorer.exe, system restore, clearing cache and restarting, right click delete, clicking the delete button, pulling it to the recycle bind. I still haven't gotten them to delete at all.

My comp is a new one about a month old its Alienware, Core i5, Windows 7, Intel. M14X.
I'm not sure how to get on safe mode in this F5 and F8 is suppose to take you to safe mode I am told, but it does not take mine to safe mode at all.

As soon as you power up, just keep tapping F8. If it doesn't work, same using F5. I know you've tried this, but it should work. If still no luck try a few of the diagnostics at boot-up.

When I opened up FF, all my bookmarks were gone. They were there 5 minutes ago. I can't go back and do a restore so I just did a fresh Uninstall/Install then it showed up again.

I'm pretty PO'ed that I spent 15 minutes redoing the process again because of this update.

Is this a common occurrence?

You sure it was a MS update blackbeagle? I've never seen that description (Yellow Exclamation) of an MS auto update before.

It could have been an update for Firefox and by cancelling it before finishing you could have corrupted something.

Put the 15 minutes down to the learning curve and now you got the bookmarks back, don't fix what ain't broken!!

I installed the Sims 3 on my computer, started it and it crashed. The screen goes blank. My PC far exceeds the recommendations for playing the game. So I updated my graphics driver and installed the latest patch for the game. Still doesn't work. Not wanting to mess up the PC any more than I did, I uninstalled the game. It works on another PC with the same specs. Then I tried to play Fallout 3 on the PC which the Sims didn't work on. whenever i use shift its almost like they are being clicked at the same time. for example if i hold shift the underlines will appear in file, edit notepad. i cant use capitals at all and i know the keys haven't been swapped around because i tried using alt and that does not work either.

i have also tried going into language in control panel tried changing languages, moving one from the bottom to top and i tried all that and still get the same result.

i also tried restoring to a previous date and that did not work either, but i was not able to go very far back unfortunately which is possible that this error was occuring then i just did not realize

anyway if you have any ideas please let me know, i appreciate it

With my keyboard setting (Hungarian) I can usually type these characters by pressing AltGr + B or N. However this software has hotkeys such as Ctrl + Alt + B or N and instead of the {} getting typed it just brings up the function the hotkey would!

Are there any ways to prevent AltGr from functioning as Ctrl+Alt too?

Please help!

HOWEVER, when both drives r connected to the system at the same time and I try to boot W8 the W7 drive gets corrupted such that the next time W7 is booted it must run CHKDSK.
I did this on both a laptop and a desktop and get the same results.

any ideas why?

A:W8 messes up another connected drive

Win8 hybrid boot/fast start feature does that to other partitions that are visible to it. Disable that feature in Win8 or "hide" the Win7 OS partition from Win8

Hey guys i am new to the forum!
For a couple of days I've been using a slicer icon pack for iconpackager then i decided that
i want to go back to default icons, but each time I click default windows icon pack it does not work there is still some icons still applied I have tried to reboot, clear icon cache system restore sfc /scannow still not working. So after trying all of them i decided to check if imagres.dll was the problem i opened up ResHacker and when into system32 and clicked on imagres.dll and I saw that there was Slicer Icons left instead of Windows 7 icons. So could someone could just upload there default Imagres.dll and I could replace it.
Please and Thank You! I have tried fixing for 3 days still no luck
And Here are some screen shots:

Welcome to the forums ... and nice username

Do you still have Iconpackager installed? Select the default icon theme, and uninstall it . And then see post 4 and post 5 of the thread Help! - How do i restore default icons? .

Post 5 is much easier option, IMO .

How fun. Earlier this week, my state experienced some severe weather which ended with a tree on our street falling and the power going out all day. It took a bit longer after that for our cable services to be restored - internet included. Ever since then, my computer in particular seems to be screwing things up for everyone else. When my computer is shut off, every other computer (one laptop, two desktops) in the house has been able to connect to the internet and maintain that connection all day. However, as soon as mine connects, the connection dies within minutes - for everyone.

I thought it could be an IP conflict but every machine in the house is set to obtain their IP automatically.

Interestingly enough, when the XBOX 360 is bridged through my computer it (the xbox) also maintains a connection, albeit a slower one.

I have spent all day trying to figure out what is going on to no avail. I have reset both the router and modem, including hard resets, and I've pinged and pinged and pinged. The same thing seems to happen regardless of whether I am using a wired or wireless connection. Here's what I have:

Computer model is HP DV6838nr.
Modem is Toshiba DAZ8821F.
Router is Linksys wrt54g v5.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate.
I am using Firefox but have also tried Opera with the same results.

A couple of weeks ago I developed a problem on my computer at work. This all happened after the IT department switched us from Lotus Notes to Outlook for e-mail. Wordís Normal.dot file would reset itself every day so that all my macros disappeared. Iíve had to import my backup copy several times now when all my macros have vanished at startup. After the first week or two, instead of automatically erasing Normal.dot, Word started giving me a message when I start it that thereís a problem and do I want to create a new Normal.dot, to which I say No, and it all seems fine. The IT department doesnít know why this happened nor do they particularly care, which is why Iíve come here for help.

Iíve found that if I start Word first, Normal.dot works fine and there are no error messages. If I start Outlook first, when I open Word I get an error message that somethingís wrong with Normal.dot and do I want to make a new one. If I compose an e-mail in Outlook before opening Word on its own, Normal.dot is erased and all my macros disappear. Obviously, Outlook is doing something. Iíd like to make it stop. Iíve looked for settings but canít find any that seem to indicate a preference for overwriting Normal.dot. Iíve come to prefer using Word as my e-mail editor, since I can use my macros and Autocorrect, which saves time. Despite having the ďuse autocorrect when Word isnít the e-mail editorĒ option checked, Outlook wonít actually use my autocorrect settings (Access does use t... Read more

The more I looked around on the net for anything relating to the problem of "Outlook corrupts normal dot" the more information I found on viruses. Have you considered that possibility?

Have you tried deleting the normal.dot you have with all your macros and then running Outlook and then trying Word? If things work correctly doing that, then look to your copy of normal.dot as the culprit rather than Outlook.

It's a place to start, anyway.

So i recently downloaded hamachi on my laptop and my desktop. At first it was working fine and there were no problems. Now the hamachi network connection combines with my network 2Wire707,disables internet access, and makes it local only. When I disable the hamachi network connection, the internet comes back on. This is an on and off thing, sometimes the wireless and hamachi will work with each other but at other times it just doesnt work at all. When it doesnt work, windows offers the solution of rebooting the router, disabling hamachi, or renewing the ip for hamachi. Rebooting works temporarily but the problem eventually occurs again, disabling isnt what im going for, and renewing the ip does absolutely nothing. My wireless connection type is WPA-Personal and my signal is strong. If theres any other information that you need just ask. Thanks!

This is NOT a request for help, but more along the lines of a guide.

OK, here's the situation:

Computer:
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H rev1.1 mobo
Intel i7-3770 (not -K) CPU
32GB Kingston Black 1600 RAM
Antec EA650 PSU
Antec Easy-SATA disk adapter for boot disk

The problem:
I have several different boot disks that can be plugged into the Antec adapter, allowing me to change OSs easily. My data disk (D) is also in an Antec adapter, so that can be changed too. The data disk is formatted in NTFS by Win 7.

I started with a fresh disk, and clean installed Win 8.0 when it came out. This was done with the data disk unplugged. I then switched back to the win 7 disk, rebooted, and got on with business as usual. No problems with the Win 8 installation, BTW.

A few weeks later I started playing with Win 8. I plugged in the Win 8 disk, leaving the data disk in, and rebooted to start Win 8. I allowed some updates then started the process of integrating the data files on D into Win 8. When this was complete, I shut down and switched the boot disk back to Win 7 to get some work done.

Upon restart of Win 7, chkdsk went nuts trying to "fix" the data disk. After about 200,000 errors, I finally gave up and rebuilt the disk. ARGGHHH!

It turns out I did some things wrong - NONE of which were pointed out by Microsoft - ANYWHERE. First, I did a clean install of Win 8. In and of itself this is not a problem. It only becomes a problem if Win 7 or... Read more

Yesterday's Firefox Update has changed my ability to drag intact one of my 275 SF links from Bookmark's tab into a post here.

Before I could drag the Bookmark title and edit it just like the other text, only it was in blue. Now it immediately converts it to the URL so that I can't edit the link title until it is posted. And the link title is no longer my custom title but the one originally given the webpage.

Is it possible to roll back this update and skip it altogether?

Roll it back as in uninstall FF13 and go back to 12? I don't see why not, unless I'm missing something here.

alright well my friend recently got a new monitor and he has been having some trouble with it. when he plays some games the resolution will get all messed up and what happens is it shows evenly sized blurred squares so he can't see any thing. the only way he has been able to fix this was restart his comp. his current resolution is 1600x1200, he has set his video card to that resolution which is the recommended resolution for his monitor. now i and he have no ideal how to fix this and why it is happening. do you guys have any ideal?

A:Video resolution messes up during games

You need to check what refresh rates the monitor uses at different resolutions and compare that to what refresh rates the graphics card uses at those resolutions.
Also, is the graphics card fairly new? And has it had any similar problems in the past?

-it took me almost 30mins to type this thread with the one-screen keyboard, i really need your help!-

my problem started when i noticed that it appeared as if my CTRL button was being pressed down(when i wasnt touching it) while i was using my keyboard. so i googled the symptons and some forum told me to me to mess around in the Accessibility Options. the CTRL button lock problem is now gone, but now the Ctrl, shift, caps lock, Windows key, Esc, on the left side of the keyboard arent working! this also includes the spacebar and random alphabet keys.

Let me tell you what is checked in the Accessibility Options under the Keyboard tab.
Use Stickykeys is unchecked, under it's Settings; keyboard shortcuts is unchecked but everything under Options and Notifications is checked.

Filterkeys is unchecked but everything under it's Settings are checked, including ignore repeated keystrokes.

Togglekeys is also unchecked.

Since the last update came down, my browser jumps whenever I touch the mouse. I'll go to click on a link and the wrong url comes up because the browser, or mouse, jumped. This will also happen when I just touch the mouse. It mostly happens opening a new page. After 2 jumps, it settles down.

Is there a cure for this? Not a show stopper but very annoying.

A:Latest Update messes up Firefox

Maybe just coincidence, but the same thing happened to me; except it didn't end with Firefox.
My mouse was double-clicking all over the place! "Annoying" wasn't a strong enough word.

I tried a different mouse and the problem went away.
It's weird that my mouse should give up the ghost at the same time I install the SP1 update, but that seems to be what happened.

I upgraded Firefox to their latest version 4 beta 12; it now seems to handle most of my add-ons.
Probably didn't have to do that, but since the mouse wasn't that old it didn't occur to me to check it right off.

Don't know if this any help to you, but you might try it?

my keys would also become active just by pressing it but not holding it as in, it would just spam a later after pressing it once, this applies to all of the keys i mentioned.

I can't determine whether its an update, process, services or anything.

Iv'e tried two system restores, even before 11/30 and I still have this problem.

A:Help...i kinds messes up at system configuration...

Welcome to TSF!

It sounds like someone told you to go into the msconfig and change some of the settings. Does that sound familiar to you? If it does sound familiar to you then to get back to it you would go to run > type "msconfig". That will open a box that will ask you what you want to have star up when you start your computer.

As for why your sound is gone, I am not sure about that one. You might want to check your device manager and see if there are any yellow "?" next to anything. To get to the device manager you click on the control panel, then system, then it is one of the tabs in there, I forget which one at the moment. But anyway, see if there are any ? next to anything and then post that back up here.

Cheers!

I work at a church and we are using an hp pavilion dv6 laptop computer running windows 7. This computer has worked perfectly fine for us for about 2 years now. We use it for mostly for projecting words and sermon power points. Up until now everything has worked perfectly using a powered vga splitter to project. About a week ago i decided to try connecting through an hdmi to see the difference. It worked fine but when i tried going back to using vga it didnt even recognize it. Ever since i plugged the hdmi cable into our laptop it wont recognize vga at all. Its not a problem with a cable as I have tried other laptops and they work perfectly fine. Only thing I can think of is that plugging in the hdmi cable messed up something software wise. I would be forever grateful for your suggestions on how to fix this issue!!! I really dont have to many clues. Thanks!

Since last year, every time I install all of the windows updates, my laptop will have start-up problems. Either I can't make the password screen load (so I can't even log in), or when I do log in, the desktop doesn't load and all I get is a black screen staring me in the face. I've tried installing all the updates numerous times, and had to do a system restore each and every time, just to get my computer to work again.

My question is: does anyone know what's going on and how I can fix this problem? I don't have the time to go through each update to find out which ones are causing this, so I'd rather not resort to this.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey everyone, Im new here and I just got vista laptop last sunday 3-22-09. I have searched the forums and have not found an answer to this.

How come every time I uninstall VPN software it messes up my onboard network port and wireless. The software installs just fine and works correctly but i have tried many differnet ones. It says there is hardware problems and ip protocol bindings. I have checked the device manager and it shows they are fine. I have uninstalled and reinstalled in device manager, reinstalled drivers, etc.. The only way to fix it is to do a system restore.

The vpn software is compatible with vista 64 bit so I don't know what else to do..

Thanks in advance

A:Uninstall VPN messes up network drivers

Sounds like it (the VPN client) is simply buggy. The act of uninstalling ought to put back network settings and component bindings to the way they were. Obviously, that's not happening.

Why do you wish to reinstall it again after a system restore fixes you up? Are you trying to remove this thing or to work with it somehow? What's the actual problem you're trying to resolve?

I just recently got my laptop back from repairshop where they changed the HDD and CD/DVD-drive. I started up the computer, everything was fine, then I noticed I only had Windows XP SP1, but I had upgraded to SP2 a long time ago (which went very, very smoothly). Well, windows update start to fetch some other upgrades that were supposedly more important than SP2. So I update and upgrade until I get the SP2 on windows update. My laptop reboots and everything seems to be fine, until the internet browsers (IE7 and Firefox) become inactive. That is I only get blank pages and neither brower tries to load any website I try.
I uninstall SP2 and everything works perfect, install it again and the same problem occurs. I'm connected with a LAN cable into the wall (it's a connection through my universitys system), and I seem to be connected according to my "Local Area Connection" in the "Network Connections" folder. I check the ipconfig in cmd and all looks correct. According to everything I'm defenitely connected to the internet.
But I also noticed that the Security Center has been totally disabled. Can't even turn on Windows Firewall. I try WinsockFix (Utility to Replaced Damaged Winsock Values in System Registry), that doesn't work. I try "netsh winsock reset" in cmd, doesn't work. And I thought of updating drivers as a futile attempt at doing something clever.

Hi, lately whenever my computer does an automatic update, it makes my computer act funny.  The easiest way for me to know is my frequent websites page changes and clicking on it pulls up a new tab instead of staying in the same window.

My did a computer restore and it fixed it, but now the updates are coming daily.  It used to be occasionally.  I didn't change it, but I noticed it's now set to daily updates.  Yesterday I turned it off to never do any updates.

So I kept doing a computer restore each time it happened, so I was doing it daily.  The daily updates started either June 3rd or June 4th.  The last restore I did started giving me messages that things couldn't be found (dll directory, or something like that).

I ran a eset scan, but it didn't show any viruses or infections.  This is getting worse.
Also, the last update made it so that the AntiMalware Bytes couldn't be used.

Luckily I had an older restore point and put to that so my computer is working again, but it's just a temporary solution until the automatic update thing gets resolved.

This is Windows7 and I use IE.
Please let me know if any other information is needed.

Thanks!

I left it to charge in the room and when I came back after around 20 minutes, there was smoke and I could smell something burning. I found out that my laptop had stopped working and I couldnít turn it on anymore. When I removed my battery, I found that part of it has melted as well. The following day, I took my laptop to the service center, only to find out that my motherboard was burnt and the only remedy was to replace it.

So I went to the shop where I purchased the class A charger from and explained to them what had happened. I blamed their adapter for being responsible for spoiling my motherboard and asked them to shoulder the expenses. They said that it was a 50-50 scenario, that is, it would either be the adapter that spoiled the laptop or that the laptop spoiled the adapter. They agreed to pay for the repairs if I could produce a report from a service center wherein it specifically says that the adapter was responsible for my laptopís damage. When the service center published their report, they were only able to mention that it was only a possibility that the adapter was responsible here as the adapter wasnít working anymore when it was given to the service center. They said that they could not be 100% sure that the adapter was at fault since they do not have any basis to write that.

I was just wondering whether it is possible for me to get a concl... Read more

I had two older ide drives locked up and the bios didn't want
to get past detecting the drive with windows 8 on them.
With my newer IDE drive in there,I got it running, but I don't
get the press delete selection to enter the bios, just the boot selection.
I have to reset the cmos to actually get to bios setup.
All the drives check out good in drive tests and scan disk and work
fine with other operating systems.Go figure.
http://netbooknetwork.net/2011/windows-8-bios-speedy-boot/

A:Well maybe this explains why windows 8 messes my bios.

My Dell E5420 doesn't respond to F2 since Windows 8, but it still responds to F12 (boot options menu), and from there I can get to the BIOS.

On the other hand, I use BootIt Bare Metal as a boot manager (as well as a partitioning tool and a launch point to Image for DOS), so dual booting is not an issue. I have my Windows 8 DVD copied to a small partition on my hard drive that I've made bootable, and I can boot to that through BootIt BM. It loads sooooo much faster than a DVD rescue disk.

So I'm not really much into eye candy with Windows 7 and even XP previously. I usually adjust for best performance and keep a few small things enabled. However in Win7 whenever I disable certain things my desktop gets completely messed as in no wallpaper and no icons. Its completely random also. From testing if I disable one item the whole desktop goes. I need to readjust back to default settings to get my desktop back.

Anyone tried this?

Every time i update my nvidia gpu drivers the setup messes up my desktop icon positions and doesn't return them to their original positions after the installation. This has occurred every single time i've updated my gpu drivers from the beginning of time. Is there way to prevent this?

My desktop is usually full with clutter because i always put the files which i frequently use there.

Is there any stable program that can save the grid layout and formulate the positions automatically from memory or a file?

The proxy settings on my laptop keep changing. If I open the connections tab in IE (or just search proxy in start menu) and open LAN settings I can see that "Use a proxy server for your LAN" is checked in. I uncheck it and it works for a few minutes, but then I notice a cmd window opens up for half a second, and this messes up the internet, and enables the proxy setting once again.

This also affected the hosts file in \system32\drivers\etc with a ton of junk. I found that and erased it, and it has since not returned/changed.

Another thing it did, when I first discovered the issue, is that my wireless connection was set to shared. I unshared it and it has remained fine ever since.

I have attempted scanning with malwarebytes antimalware and it did find some issues that I did quarantine, but the problem persists.

Thanks for helping.

I have a digital microscope camera "Premiere MA88" that seems to be interfereing with my Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 program.
Let me start by saying I had this same set up and used it on my desktop with some interference with photoshop, we moved and my set up is different. I now am trying to use it with my laptop which is on Vista 64 bit. It wouldn't work. I called where I got it from and they sent me a new one with uipdated software. I returned the other one. I set up the new one and this is when the "editor" part of Elements 7 has stopped working completely.
When I try to access the editor it closes the program and gives me a message that Windows is closing it down. I have uninstalled both microscope camera software and Adobe Elements, tried reinstalling just Elements but to no avail!! I really, really, need my photo program restored. Any suggestions??

My email address has been with pacbell.net for many years. Of course, Pacific Bell became SBC, which became AT&T. AT&T has a deal with yahoo to run email through their servers.

For many years, I have been getting my emails downloaded into Outlook Express on my own hard drive from the pop.pacbell.yahoo.com server.

Today, AT&T/Yahoo sent out an email entitled "Email security enhancements - action required".

Basically, the instructions involve the following:
change pop.pacbell.yahoo.com to pop.att.yahoo.com
and
change smtp.pacbell.yahoo.com to smtp.att.yahoo.com
and then
set encrypted port 995 for POP3 and port 465 for SMTP.

Well, I made those changes, and the next time I clicked on send and receive, OE is trying to download 10,000 messages.

Those 10,000 messages are already on my hard drive, and I don't want them again!!!

What can I do so that I only get the new messages?

Thanks for any advice!

Hi Guys

I'm a newbie here at the forum but I am a long time user of IT and work in the IT industry.

I've been Googling frantically to find a solution for this but have found nothing.

Background
I have 3 machines which I am using to interact with each other as a part of my ventures in web development.
1) Main Machine - Running Windows XP Media Center Edition. I have a network drive mapped to the website directory on my Web Server so I can load the files and work with them direct without having to copy/cut.
2) Web Server - Running Windows XP Professional SP2 connected via Wireless. It is used to host my website and uses Windows file sharing to share the website directory. I administer this PC using VNC from my other two computers.
3) Laptop - Running Windows XP Professional SP2. This has a mapped network drive to the shared Web Site directory on the Web Server configured to use offline files, so I can work with the files whilst not connected to the network, then synchronise when I reconnect to the network.

All this has been working great with the offline files on my laptop and having the mapped network drives on both computers to work with the files on my website whether at home or elsewhere.

However, I am someone who isn't easily satisfied with leaving things as they are and I like to test the limits on what may be possible.

The Problem
Whilst playing around the other day on my laptop at my Girlfriends house (connected to her wireless network, not my own... Read more

I have a large mp3/wma collection and I play the music with WMP10 and its library. Before adding new music to the library, I tag the files with the software "Tag&Rename" that gets music info from Amazon. Then the files are added to WMP10's library.

WMP is not allowed access to the internet because it would replace my beautiful Amazon tags with faulty crappy inaccurate CDDB infos. Also, all this database fetching stuff is disabled in WMP options.

I have recently discovered that even though WMP is blocked at several levels, it randomly changes the genres of some files to "Other" and then also loses custom ratings. The changes appear not only in WMP library but also in the mp3 tags as such.

I can workaround the problem by write-protecting the files but this is no solution. Microsoft has no right to fukk up my tags.

Do you experience the same?
Do you have a solution?
Do you have a recommendation for more professional and less faulty media player than WMP?

Thanks in advance,
mapex

Over the past week, whenever I boot my computer, my network access is listed as limited or inaccessible (the yellow triangle icon) and thus I have no Internet access (I'm cable connected to a router).

So, when I open Network and Sharing Center (I run Windows 7), I notice that, apart from my home network which is 'Joined', there's also an unidentified public network listed as active, which I'm not connected to. I figure that's the one causing the problem, yet I cannot delete it as it is listed as active. The other computers on the router have wireless connections. Does this mean someone is leeching off my interwebz?

Anyway, I can resolve the problem altogether by disabling and re-enabling my Local Area Connection and I return to just being connected to my home network. What I would like to know is how to get rid of the unidentified public network for good.

Okay, so it's been over a year, and my 6cell battery is beginning to die out. I ordered a replacement battery from eBay rather than Dell. Hello! I purchased a refurbished elitebook 8440p with pre-installed windows 7, 8GB of RAM, 2.40 GHz processor.  I continued to refuse the windows 10 upgrade when it constantly popped up, and then one day I turned on the computer and it upgraded anyway without permission. Ever since the upgrade, if I shut down my computer, or try to put it in sleep or hibernate, when I go to wake it up or turn it on, I always get a blank screen. I generally have to turn it on and off several times before any start up screen will appear. Then half the time, when I do get a start up screen, my cursor is stuck at the top of the page and only moves left or right anytime I try to move it around. So, I have to turn off and on again until a new screen appears. I have investigated how to remove windows 10 and reinstall windows 7. I am past the 10 day or 30 day period. The media creation tool asks for the product key which I type in from the sticker on the bottom of the laptop, but won't let me go past the verification process saying to contact the manufacturer for help.  Apparently there may be specific drivers or something that were removed when it upgraded and the media tool doesn't want to allow me to create anything to let me do a clean reinstall of windows 7. I tried to find an f11 factory reset option after pressing esc at the start up screen. There was no option to do so. The best I could do was "reset" the computer, but it only took it bac... Read more

HI. Its my first post and sorry my bad english. So cut to the chase - ive installed windows 7 ultimate 32 bit and what ive noticed was - high cpu drain from hardware interrupts.

I have two sound cards- first is Realtek HD which is integrated with motherboard. Second is SB Audigy.

Ive noticed some trick to clear the cpu drain from hardware interrupts to a normal size (close to 0%). The trick was to enter sleep mode and come back from it. But the problem was- my system was running quick and easy but without any sound ! Thats a common problem with vista and windows 7 that ive heard of.

So i took out the sb audigy and there is some small improvement. Cpu doesnt get that much load from interrupts (around 10 -20% less). I use now only Realtek HD and now the sleep mode option doesnt work because the interrupts drain stays aswell with the sound.

What to do ? Drivers as windows 7 says are - up to date. I guess that problem was even before installing w7, but then because of xp which works faster on my machine could have been unnoticed by me.

I got hit by a weird virus recently that I'm still trying to clear things up... AVG didn't stop it

Anyway, maybe someone can give me a few tips/places to check to fix things back to normal.
All I have to work with is that it deleted "C:\Windows;" and "C:\Windows\system32" from my path variables--which made it difficult to check my ipconfig

I noticed that I had a problem when I started getting intermittent connectivity on my router. my cell-phone could get a perfect wireless connection and worked very speedily. My computer however kept disconnecting (it would say it was connected to the wireless network but I'd try to go into the router menu from my browser and it would clock for 5 min before giving up--the same thing goes for when I would try to go on a website). Occasionally, I'd randomly get internet again to load one page, but that was it.

Anyway, I figured the path thing out and now it doesn't do it as much but it still has trouble loading my homepage with ease (I'm using Chrome and I have yahoo as my homepage if the details are necessary) Going to google has the same trouble. And what I mean is...it loads it very slowly but it claims it is still clocking even though everything on the page is loaded and it says "waiting for www.google.com" &c.

Should I try to reinstall my browser? is there something I can download that can help with this? Should I double check to make sure AVG is working? What else can/should I do?

A:Hit by Virus: erased some path(s) and messes with internet connectivit

Hello,

It wont have deleted your Windows folder or you wont be able to boot to Windows. What a lot of the modern viruses do is write the 'hide' attribute to the folders and files on your PC so that you cant use windows properly or use programs.

In this situation it is normally easier to re-install the OS.

If you would like to try and resolve it without a re-install then I would first un-hide the as many folders within the Crive as possible. Then try and go back to a working state by using System Restore. If this works, when the System is restored download Malwarebytes and run a full System Scan to make sure that the threat is gone.

I really would just re-install though as long as you have a backup of your data.

Hello all,

I installed the Creative X-Fi Audio Processor update (10/22/2009), and it completely messed up my computer (Windows 7 x64).

I accidentally installed this update while checking if I had new updates to install. Little did I know that it would cause me much grief. I rebooted the system so that the updates could finish, and when I saw my login screen things went bad. The screen resolution was all out of whack (800x600, while my regular resolution is 1920x1080). To make matters worse, the mouse won't move. When I logged in, I discovered the internet wouldn't work either. Soon, a popup window popped up, saying that "No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver appropriate for your ATI hardware." I went to the display settings (using only the keyboard) and discovered that my default resolution was no longer on the list. Dejected, I went on my other PC and downloaded the ATI driver pack for my video card on the crippled computer. I transfered it via flash drive to the crippled computer and installed it - rebooted, my resolution was back to normal, but the mouse and internet were still not working. I then transfered a Creative driver pack I got from the official site and put it on the flash drive and transferred it - no changes. I then used Guru3d's Driver Sweeper to get rid of the dregs of the Creative drivers, rebooted, nothing, and now my audio's dead too.

Windows update KB2847077
causes Media Player 12.07601.17514 to lose track of all settings and libraries

Double clicking on a video media - opens a first time window that asks to use recommended or custom settings.

(this is catastrophic for me as I use Media Player's DLNA connectivity)

This has happened twice to me - first from a standard Windows Update (yesterday 12/11/2013) - I had to do a system restore to before the update, then figured out that it was KB2847077 - so updated everything else except for KB2847077 - my PC and media player were just fine after the restart.

Last night for some reason that update was installed again, from one of my vulnerability scans (despite me specifically hiding it in Windows Update) - so this morning my Media Player was messed up again - did another system restore before that module update, and everything is back to normal again.

I go to this site: The House Player to listen to an online Christian Station out of Oklahoma.

The site "plays" fine. If I try and stop the player, however, it will not stop. I can't use any of the controls on the player in Firefox. If I open it in Internet Explorer it works great.

Also, I have another online radio station I like to listen to: WCLN which is a local station here. I can listen to it fine in Internet Explorer, but it won't even run in FireFox.

Does it run in any of your Firefox browsers? If so, what options or extensions would help to fix this?

Thanks.

A:Solved: Firefox messes up with Online Radio sites

If you really want to use firefox and no updates seem to fix the issue, try using the IE tab extension for firefox. Not sure if this will work, but in theory it should.

Hi,

Everytime I try and change the default program for an extension to something else, its icon gets messed up.

For example,

I am using WinCDEmu ( WinCDEmu - A free CD/DVD emulator for Win32 and Win64 ), and want to mount an .mdf, but unfortunately, the .mdf has not been automatically associated, so I manually do it in Default Program. But when I am done, the icon for the file gets messed up and looks like this:

The icon, should look like this though:

What can I do to fix the icon issue?

Thanks,
Slasher

A:Changing default program for extension messes up the icon

It happens . The file will take load of the file icon of the default program associated . If you shift from WMP to VLC as your default music player, it will also happen .

There is no way to get back unless you get back to default default application .

Anyway, it's not an issue . It's natural .

Hello all,

I just installed Vista (64 bit edition) and its working well for the most part. The only problem I have is with my display. I have an Acer AL1916W monitor which is 19" widescreen and its best resolution (looks poor on all other resolutions) is 1440 x 900 (16:10). My graphics card is an ATI X1600.

Straight after installing Vista, I could easily change it to the above resolution and everything would be just fine. However, when I update the video drivers either through Windows Update or through the latest Catalyst drivers on the AMD/ATI site, it messes up the resolutions available to me and I can no longer use 1440 x 900.

As soon as I uninstall the driver I can select 1440 x 900 again. I don't understand why the driver 'deletes' that resolution.

By the way, Windows XP (32 bit) works just fine at the 1440 x 900 resolution.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me here. I'm tearing my hair out trying to get this working!

Cheers, Chili.

Just a day ago I had this happen and now it won't go away. When I clock on the volume icon on my system try it shows the volume for a split second then the start menu vanishes. If I hit the start menu button I get the start menu but I don't have access to anything on my task bar or system tray ( I can still use the items under the start menu). If I want to switch between programs or windows I have to use alt-tab.

If I log off and log back on sometimes it works for a bit but always goes back to this. I am running windows vista 32 bit.

Does anyone else have this issue or know how to fix it?

I've been having this problem for awhile now, and I've gone to many different forum trying to get help with trying to get my games to work cause they'd crash. Here is a recent post I did in the oblivion forums on the issue that describes everything.

I just bought Oblivion GOTY edition yesterday and it crashes right on start up. The launcher pops up and I hit play and it comes up " Not Responding ", with a small black box at the top left corner of my screen, and I have to go through the task manager to cut it off. I will mention that I am a Vista user (32Bit) and alot of my games haven't started crashing sense I have installed my Tablet, and ran PC pitstop on my computer (and I regret that). Ever sense then though a lot of my games haven't worked for me the same. (Bioshock, America's Army, Unreal Tournament 3) I have tried a number of solutions. But first of all I will show my some system specs.

Processor: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+ ~2.1Ghz
Memory: 3070MB Ram DDR2
Video: ATI Radeon X1600/X1650 Series 512MB

If there is anymore information you need please let me know, but here is also a list of solutions I have tried.

-Run as Administrator
-Installed Latest DirectX
-Update Graphics Card Drivers
-Installed Patches for Oblivion
-Turn off my Tablet Input Service
-Renamed the Oblivion folder in Documents/MyGames/Oblivion
-Reinstalled numerous amounts of times
-Scan for viruses
Still haven't got Oblivion to w... Read more

Maybe, would anyone happen to know if in Vista you can temporarily turn off drivers for specific devices? Maybe that'd help?

I have been getting 'nag' messages from windows asking me to install SP1 almost ever since I got this laptop. The problem is, each time I try and run the installation, everything goes fine until the reboot (ie just after the 'configuring the service pack - do not switch off - 30% configured message' appears).

Then all I get is a black screen - nomatter how long I leave it. Indulging in the 'system repair' menus allows me to look at the command prompt and see what drives there are. Instead of c: (windows), D: (DVD drive), E: (data) and Q: (system) I get D:, F:, E:, C: respectively plus a new letter X: which appears to have an older version of windows and possibly some recovery stuff?

In all previous attempts, the only way out of this is to choose the system 'restore' option - which has always worked promptly - until today!

Looking around the internet, I have found a variety of suggestions and tried them nearly all. These include the following - with the results indicated:
1. Microsoft's own 'pre-update install' tools and hotfixes - no effect
2. Using 'diskpart' to assign the 'correct' drive letters when the first reboot fails - the letters fail to 'stick' and revert to the 'wrong' ones.
3. Using bootrec.exe to repair/replace/examin the MBR - no effect
4. Try 'startup/repair' at least three times - no effect
5. Microsoft support article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392 - no obvious change
6. Going via 'safe mode' - I get a 'failure configuring service pack ... Read more

Have you moved critical system files/folders off the Windows partition? How many HD's are involved?

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Hi all

Half way through the Windows 7 Repair install the monitor drivers seem to have corrupted. The screen works fine up to the Windows logo on a black background, then the screen goes dead.

Everything is still working underneath, key presses seem to affect the hard disk, caps lock works, I can even hibernate with the sleep key, but I can't get Windows running so I can install the monitor drivers (or do anything else).

Repair Install did ask me to uninstall the ATI Catalyst drivers, but the screen worked fine after.

I have tried:Restarting
Typing my Win 7 license key and pressing return
Connecting to an external monitor via HDMI
Booting from a USB and DVD Win7 installer disk and trying the Startup Repair, Restore, installing drivers (I think they only go into memory), etc.
As above but using the DOS prompt, copying fresh copies of the monitor driver files inf/monitor.pnf inf/monitor.inf and sys32/drivers/monitor.sys then rebooting
Trying every option in the BIOS (although nothing was promising - was hoping to turn off PnP but there was no option)
Trying a new repair install by booting from the Win7 disk - it boots, loads fine, but at the compatibility check demands I start Windows then run the installer from within Windows
Is there any way to avoid a fresh Windows install? All I need to do, I think, is install a different video driver, and I have full access to the file system.

Huge, huge, huge thanks for any leads at all, been on this a few days now and this Win... Read more

Hi,
I've just installed Windows 7 Starter on my Acer Aspire One (after having XP), and I get through the whole install and can even run it in Safe Mode (I'm using it to post this), but in normal mode, it keeps getting frozen at installing 13/14 Screen saver install. It freezes up the whole computer. Is there a solution to this? I can't bypass it, as it automatically starts back up where it left off the last time it was installing once I log in. I can get to the start menu, and even do a few things, but I have about a minute until it gets to the freeze up point.
Any help would be great.
Thanks,
evenoski

Hi Guys, I've literally spent HOURS squinting at my tiny iPhone screen
pouring over post after post on Google. :(

Here's the problem:

*brand new, 1TB Hitachi HD
*attempting to install Vista Home Premium; with Hewlett Packard's System Recovery, factory made CD's
*have had a 1TB drive before in the machine; I have also REPEATEDLY used these disks to restore my system, in the past
*the CD's work, Vista loads, HP's driver platform loads the drivers, the Os functions all the way to the point where it asks for region & timezone
***after resetting, after the initial "region config", Vista hangs at the blue "one-time setup process" screen. The little green cursor/bar thingy at the bottom of the blue screen marches across the screen with impunity. Nothing is happening; I've had the computer on this screen for so long, the power settings put it into hibernate (which I think means at least 5 hours with no activity). The high-speed Internet IS working. I've done a fresh, full restore 3 times with identical results. :(

I read alot of BSOD posts... But I don't think is a true BSOD; I have found others reporting this problem, but thus far the solutions offered have been insulting (it CAN'T be a virus, I very much doubt it's a driver problem, as I am using factor-made model-specific disks)

Thank you guys so much for your time! I very much appreciate your input; I am so very sorry to burden you, I tried everything I could to fix this on my own. :)

Oh, full sys specs in my profile. ;)

Thanks for all providing valuable suggestions in my previous thread Win 7: Black screen on boot up, before login screen?

As I am picking the clean install option for my resolution, I am opening this new thread.

I reviewed the tutorials (Macrium) of this community. I found Macrium Reflect Free (Version: 6.0.753 (21 July 2015)) for download.

I downloaded/installed above Macrium to working PC. This version has an option to create Macrium Reflect rescue media on CD, DVD, or USB stick upon installing on working PC. I created a rescue media USB.

I created complete HDD image of my unbootable (Z580), before doing clean win 7 install. I am going to clean install Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) using my OEM KEY.

I posted the OEM DISKMAP in my previous thread Post # 90

I find System (d:\) 200 MB Windows_7 (OS) ( c:\) 653.44 GB & my Lenovo_data (e:\) 25.47 GB. Lenovo says, if I change the partition configuration, it will make built-in Lenovo recovery unusable.

I like the idea of adopting infrequent system changes (adding new programs etc) and frequent data changes (growing user documents) in image backup strategy. I mean taking system partition (d:\ + c:\) image back up as and when I add new programs and taking data partition (e:\) image backup periodically.

How do I re-structure my DISKMAP to have effective periodical image backup without disrupting built-in Lenovo recovery?

Are there any Windows 7 disk partition recommendation/guidelines?
Thanks for sharing/h... Read more

Hello, I've been noticing this over the years. When Daylight Saving Time occurs (whichever one, moving the clock forward 1 hour or moving it backward 1 hour), ALL my files' "Date Modified" detail move forward or backward 1 hour.

For example, I have a document file called asdf.docx and its Date Modified detail is: 9/26/2015 4:00 PM
When Daylight Saving Time comes around to move the clock forward 1 hour, that file's Date Modified is now 9/26/2015 5:00 PM. That's not correct, it should stay at 4:00 PM. What the hell is happening?
