[screen glitch] before lock screen appears+smal boot delay

Q: [screen glitch] before lock screen appears+smal boot delay

Kind of screen glitch that appears before windows 8 lock screen appears at start /restart and a notable delay in starting/restarting time than with my 1st win8 install.

I think this appeared after I installed my windows 7 back ( dont ask me why..)( a clean install) and installed my win8 back again.I dont think Ive done them corectly:

I couldnt install win 7 it in C ,neither to format that partition because of this message [Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks] and an error code 0x0000 smth... while attempting to format the C. I could only manage to instal windows 7 back after deleting all of the partiton and now I have a single C one.

When Ive tried to reinstall windows 8 these days I expected to see only a partiton where to put my windows but instead there were other minor ones too ( they dint shown during my win7 install) like they appear now if I open disk management .

So now I have that glitch when starting windows 8. I dont know how to describe it: its a black screen -with that windows 8 doted loading wheel -partially covering my Motherboard logo screen ( that screen at startup with bios setup, boot menu options etc).I say partially becuase I can see parts of my motherboard screen on left and right but they are kinda shredded and disolved into scraps. This appears after the clean Motherboard screen witht those options I mentioned above. On my 1st win 8 install this dint use to happen.

So Now I f I want to do a clean correct install of windows 8 what should I do?asking these in the context of those EFI , recovery partitions I havent seen till now while installing windows.

Recently, i've noticed that everytime windows 10 (x64 pro) starts and gets to the initial lock screen, it takes up to 6 seconds to show the mouse cursor and register keyboard events in order to let me log in. It used to be instantaneous.

Is this related to Build 1511 (10586.104)? All my drivers are up to date, etc.

Specs:
-Core 2 Quad Q9550 (OC to 3.2ghz (vs 2.8ghz))

Title I wanted to use: Windows XP SP3: Slow Startup / Boot: Black Screen Delay & Delay after logging in

For some reason I can't preview my post when I use this title: I have tried removing all the punctuation, including the &, which doesn't work and have tried other titles with the same character length, which does work.

Problem Begins Here:

When I turn on or restart my computer, the boot up time from the time I press the power button to the time the final icon on my desktop loads is slow. I am not too concerned about the time after my desktop is shown since I have several items to run at startup.

The two areas of concern are:

1) After the XP logo is shown, my screen goes black. This lasts for about 17 to 19 seconds. I don't know when this started as I rarely restart my computer. The problem is worse if I startup in Safe Mode. It's about 1 minute and 10 seconds before I see anything on the screen, and another 40 seconds before something else is shown on screen. Note: In order to not to have to waste time pressing F8 and choosing Safe Mode, I enter safe mode by specifying so in msconfig. The options I chose were /SAFEBOOT and Minimal.

2) After I login, there is a delay of about 30 to 45 seconds before the desktop is shown. Windows stays at the login confirmation screen during that time. This I feel has happened recently.

Boot Time Results tested using a stopwatch:

Normal Boot (i.e. Not Safe Mode):

When the key is depressed it displays this in the middle of the screen
When i let go it displays this for half a second
Very annoying when doing anything not in fullscreen.

Hello,
First I want to point out that the "Play a slide show on the lock screen" is not the option that I'm looking for, since it remembers the original image that was set for the lock screen after I log back in, or restart the computer.

I am looking for an option that will always load a random picture from a certain folder to appear as my lock screen, every time the lock screen appears.
So for example, I turn on the computer and I see Image #1. I log into my account and after a few minutes I lock the computer. When I lock the computer, I want to see Image #7 as the lock screen. Now I restart the computer. Windows shuts down and starts up again. I am now at the lock screen again. I want to see Image #4. (The reason why those image numbers are like that is because they're random).

So does anyone know of an option in Windows that can do that, or a 3rd party program that can do that?

Thanks so much

I have an HP A250N Dektop, P4 2.6GHz, 512MB RAM. I damaged the motherboard while inserting a flash drive into the USB port. The computer froze and after reseting was dead. I replaced the motherboard, ASUS (HP) P4SD-LA SOCKET 478, with an identical motherboard. When powering up the CMOS screen stays on for 25 seconds, then the screen is blank with a flashing cursor for another 25 seconds with no other activity. Then the computer boots normally and works fine. Any ideas?

Often the delay is with a specific piece of hardware. Try to simplify things as you can. Hooking up only what you need to boot.

Hi, my first post as I am fairly competent with computers, but I'm frustrated. I have a Pavillion DV6, Intel Core i5-2430M CPU @ 2.40GHz, 6gb ram, with AMD Radeon HD 7400M Series and Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000. Under Windows 7, I replaced the standard hard drive with a Crucial_CT240M500SSD1 - 223.57 GB. On Windows 7 it was fantastic and boot time was seconds. When it became available for me, I took the option to update to Windows 10. Now when I start my laptop, the blue windows screen loads, the loading dots circle a couple of times, then I get a black screen for approx 90 seconds, then eventually the log in page loads and everything is as it should be. I have not been able to find this exact problem anywhere, the nearest seems to be having a black screen with a flashing cursor, but I dont get that, just a black backlit screen. I have tried a few "fixes" uninstalling CCC and drivers etc then installing and enabling/disabling in different configurations, but the problem persists. When the graphics drivers are disabled, the laptop boots in a few seconds to log in, but when loaded the display is like safe mode and unacceptable. Any help would be appreciated as my laptop is normally on for long periods whilst working, or I shut it down and only need to be on for a few minutes at a time and the delay in boot is annoying.

Recently, my computer has started to delay during boot up. The delay starts after the 'Starting windows' screen, it is a black screen with a mouse cursor, some times I can move the mouse, other times I cannot. The delay lasts for about 60 seconds. Then takes me to the log in screen (or logs me in if I have it set to automatic log on) . I am tearing my hair out trying to determine what is the cause.
I have used the instructions Trace Windows 7 boot/shutdown/hibernate/standby/resume issues - Windows 7 - MSFN Forum
to determine the issue is occurring during the SMSSinit phase of the mainboot. I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers. I have setup custom event viewers to look at the boot and also see the delay with warnings. MbAr found no issues, Combofix found nothing significant. Avast boot time scan found nothing significant. sfc found no issues (I did have the kb3022345 issue but have uninstalled that update).
Startup repair also found no issues.

Hi all! I'm brand new here.

This is a new build from about 11/15. System was rock solid until about a month ago when I had a weird string of BSOD at login. I went through a bunch of hoops and finally got the system back to normalish, although I never really figured out what the problem was..

However, since then I intermittently have a delay just before the login screen shows. Most of the time it's fine, when it's not, it manifests as a black screen with just my mouse pointer hanging out in the void. This delay can be anywhere from ~30 seconds to ~5 minutes.

Any help is appreciated. Let me know what additional info you might need from me.

Stuff I have done:

Updated all drivers for my hardware that aren't marked as beta (there's a couple of those for my mobo)
Ran chkdsk (no errors)
Ran sfc /scannow (no errors)
Changed my DNS server settings and disable IPv6 (I forget what led me to believe that could be the culprit)
Took the overclock off my RAM

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things.. anyway.. thanks in advance for any help.

I've been using Windows 10 for just over one year. For some reason the Lock Screen/Sign-in screen shows three users. All three are me in three iterations. I find also that when trying to save some excel and word documents I receive messages saying that i am not allowed to save to this folder or that folder. I am able to save to the desk top and then drag and drop the document into the folder that I need to place it in. I know that this must have something to do with "permissions". Not sure how to fix that. One of the accounts that shows up is the initial account that I created back when hotmail.com was around. Any ideas/advice on these issues? When i updated to Windows 10, pretty certain that i followed all of the instructions, although that has been over 1 year now. Thank you in advance...cheers and beers to all!

Hi,

My computer has been working fine for months, this last week it has been on for a few days as it runs as the server in my house with the adsl coming into it. Last night I turned the comp off to attach my parellel port zip drive, when I turned it back on windows xp boots upto the point of the scrolling bar then the screen flashes up blue and the computer resets.

when it tries to boot again it gives me the option of normal, last known good config or safe mode. Normal and last known good config result in the same blue screen and safe mode hangs when loading mup.sys

The blue screen isn;t up long enough to find out whats happened. The computer POSTs fine and I can still access the hard drive if I use a win 98 floppy boot disk.

Its really starting to get annoying as I have some serious deadlines this week and a lot of important info on the comp. Why does this happen just before I decide to back stuff onto CD and not after....??

My system is a duron 1300
256mb ddr
forgotton the motherboard make
onboard sound, vga and network
40gb harddrive
cdrw drive

any help is welcomed

A:winXP won't boot, blue screen appears

Try running the repair off your original Windows CD. Boot from the CD & run the set-up XP, select your XP partition, select R to repair let it do it?s stuff it should get you going.

If as you say you can boot from a windows 98 disk, can you see your data if so you must be running a Fat32 partition not an NTFS partition. if this is correct it may be an idea to copy off any important data first.

I did a clean install of win 7 pro 64 bit to get rid of vista. During the install and program reload i deleted the old vista windows directory. Now when I boot my machine it gives a screen to select my os prior to loading windows 7.

How can I disable or bypass that screen?

A:How do I bypass os select screen that appears during boot?

I don't know how you "deleted the Vista directory" but that is not how to Clean Install Windows 7. If you have a Dual Boot menu now then you must have installed Win7 to another partition.

Did you boot the installer, do a Custom Install using the Drive Options in Steps 7/8 to delete all partitions, create and format new as you wish. This is a Clean install.

If you have a Dual Boot menu then you likely just installed Win7 to another partition and still have Vista on there. Can you select Vista from the menu?

Either follow the steps I outlined above or post back a screenshot of Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

I'm using Vista Home Premium. Last night I just got rid of a virus (Antivirus 2009) and installed a new antivirus program (avast). I restarted a couple times, then went into safe mode, then shut off the computer. This morning I couldn't get it to boot, not even in safe mode. Everytime, it would make it past the loading bars, and then the screen would turn black, and there would just be the cursor there, with the little loading circle flashing.

Can someone tell me what is wrong? Or at least, can someone tell me how to get around this and boot up my computer at least once so that I can try system restore?

A:Vista won't boot; black screen with cursor appears before log-in

At this point the only thing I would suggest is resetting your BIOS by clearing your CMOS jumper on the motherboard.

Yello, I built a new PC not long ago and have an odd problem. Pretty randomly it will sort of lock up on the XP boot screen. I say sort of because the loading bar is moving, but at a speed of about one pixel a minute or worse. I left it for half an hour once and it didnt boot.

If I just hit reset it usually does it again, though sometimes it will boot normally, but if I turn the power off entirely for a few seconds and boot, it has a 90% success rate. It's not a huge problem, but I see no reason for it to happen and it problaby will trash something in time. The same thing happens with a seperate XP on another disk. The only thing I can think of is it's something to do with something not flushing properly. I dont know. It shuts down perfectly. Couldn't find anything about this elsewhere. Any ideas?

Hello. I tried to speed up the boot up process by taking some applications out of the start menu/inital lunch mode as the PC boots up. However, what has happenned is that I have inadventently caused the following problem: When I start the PC and Windows 7 loads, it shows normal initializing screens then goes black for 10/15 mins prior to getting to the desktop, and then the PC runs fine. The mouse/cursor is visible and moves as I command, but nothing else.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi, hope somebody has seen this before or can help!

I have an Asus X50N Laptop running Vista Home Premium 32bit.
(Model:X50N-AP048C)
AMD Turion 64 2.0GHz
3GB RAM, 120GB HDD

My problem is this:
I was installing a small program when my laptop froze completely for more than 5 minutes. I force powered it off by holding down the power button, and when I attempted to reboot, the laptop was completely dead other than the hard drive light staying on solid.

I then took out the battery and held down the power button for a minute, with the same HDD light-only result. I've reseated the RAM, repeated the first thing, and eventually gave up and left the screen open with the HDD light on.

After 5-10 minutes, the laptop suddenly came to life and showed the BIOS screen, then began to boot Windows. Unfortunately at this stage however, it just hangs at the green bar loading Windows and has done this for more than 15 minutes.

I ran a HDD test a few days back when it was working fine, and there was no sign of anything bad, but I'm going to take it out and run a full one now.

I'm not sure whether this is a software or hardware problem yet, but as the laptop delays boot even before the BIOS I'm assuming its hardware...

If anyone can help or has any suggestions to try I'd appreciate it.

I looked at my minidump file "last modified date" and it shows 7/30/2010 - does that mean that windows did not crash - but the screen locked up anyway???

Also noticed that tonight when it locked up, some music i had playing kept playing till I force quit the computer. (don't know if that means anything)

If you wish to have others assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder. The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
* Briefly describe the problem history and circumstances in the same post. Somebody will attend to your query as soon as possible.

So, yesterday I installed Windows 8 for good, but I'm facing some problems. The first never happened with the preview version but the second happened and I'd like to see if there is any way to solve.

UNNECESSARY DUAL-BOOT SCREEN

So, I installed after formating my SSD, which had Windows 7. There is also a 2 TB HDD for anything besides the system. Since almost everything is on that drive, I didn't format it. Anyway, Windows now thinks that there is a Windows 7 installation, even if there isn't. I don't know if it is because of that HDD or the "reserved by system partition". This happened once on W7, but only on the first boot. It must have updated the registry on something. Now, with W8, every time the screen appears.

I've upload a picture from Disk Management, but since it's in portuguese, I'll help: C is the W8 drive; D is the HDD and E is the "reserved by system" partition.

EDIT: Changing the boot order in the BIOS for the DVD -> SSD -> HDD (before it strangely was DVD -> HDD -> SSD) now shows 3 options in the dual boot screen, including 2 W8 installations.

NUM LOCK ALWAYS ON

My BIOS has set Num Lock to be always on and Windows 7 always had it on. But Windows 8 doesn't. I'm talking about the login screen. Is there any way to have it on even for that screen?

Thanks!

I have no password and I have chosen to not use a password to log in as I have found help information on, but this doesn't help me.

I was being silly and reactivated it some how by being a funny idiot and key pounding my keyboard randomly for a while. I changed my power settings on my Dell, which must have popped it back in.

I'd love whoever can help me! Appreciate any help in advance.

Hi, I have an office desktop pc (HP COMPAQ ELITE 8100) running 64-bit Windows 7. I was manually running Windows update and manually updating some of my drivers when the pc suddenly turned itself off.

I turned it back on and now it doesn't get to the login screen anymore. It just displays a black screen with a movable mouse cursor although I can't really click anything or even press any keys on the keyboard.

I tried loading into the recovery environment but it only gives me the option to restore my hard drive to factory settings, which I don't want since I have lots of important files in it.

I've searched around the forums but I can't find a problem that is EXACTLY like mine.

By the way, my pc is on a dual boot mode with an Ubuntu 11.10 and that is how I'm able to access this forum right now. The dual boot was set-up by the employee that I replaced so I have no idea how this is set-up.
Any help would be appreciated!

I cannot get to my desktop as this black screen is preventing me to do so.

It doesn't even give me enough time to log in!
It happened once before but it magically started to work the other time.
This never happened when I was still using the stock 640GB HDD that the laptop came with. So maybe I'm thinking it's because of my SSD having problems?

Fortunately, I can still get to Safe Mode and it says I got a BSOD and here's some details that it showed:

PIII Intel 82845 motherboard PC with Win XP SP2.
I had previously installed Vista Pack (thus replacing the Logon UI interface, other start menu etc) However that was removed half a yr back. It didn't quite uninstall Logon Ui. However, that did not pose any problem, as the XP without traces of Vista Pack continue to Boot up (although Logon screen splashed Vista type Logon Ui)..

That was to prepare you for history of this XP installation.

then, few days back, I used a exhaustive program called TuneUp utilities for XP 2008 edition. Somehow, I got hooked into changing Display setting etc. No probs. However, on few tries of changes, I happened to remember I clicked on the Configuration option of , 'Switch to Default Windows XP Logon UI' or something that prompted that TuneUp wants to bypass the VistaLOGON Ui.

After that setup change, the XP goes to boot process. On appearance of Logon screen, which somehow, it still props up old Vista Ui logon, a BOSD appears. STO P error. "Your system has been shutdown to prevent damage to registry."

I tried all options in Safe Mode, F8 button. I also used the "Don't shutdown on bluescreen option" That's how I managed to note down the Registry thing.

It also prompts me to disable 'Shadowing' option of RAM in BIOS. Although I doubt, cause the XP was working fine without any bios change.

I do not hv any backup disk or a bootable XP disk. Though I am having a Win95 partition and can boot to... Read more

Can it be run from DOS bootup without HIMEM access. Basic DOS? I have tried resetting and tried a new memory stick to no avail. I think it is the graphics chip set but not sure. The next step is replacing the mother board (rather than trying to replace the graphic chipset) but would like to know if theblinking LED on the caps lock key is telling me anything. It blinks 5 times, pauses and blinks 5 times, and repeats this endlessly. Does anyone know what it means or have any other suggestions?ThanxR.J.

This regards an HP ENVY Sleekbook 6-1129WM, windows 8.1, brand new, that I received last week. When I turn the machine on the HP logo appears and then the computer just sits there indefinitely, unless I press a key. Following a key press the normal spinning white dots appear and the machine begins booting. The lock screen appears for an instant, then immediately flies away revealing the logon screen. I can login normally and nothing else seems out of the ordinary. I've been wrestling with this issue on and off for 6 or 7 days now and I'm really at my wits end.

The history is as follows:
I get the new machine up and running and start updating windows 8

When windows 8 is up to date I upgrade to 8.1, at this point I save a system image

I install some customization programs- winaero, blackglass, a utility that removes shortcut arrows, change some icons, my lockscreen etc; I'm also installing updates for windows 8.1

At some point I notice that during a restart the screen froze at the HP logo, I tap space bar, the boot process then starts and the lockscreen issue appears. Everytime I restart this happens.

I figure the custom programs screwed something up, but no problem that's why I made a fresh image of the clean system.

I'm surprised the computer booted in Legacy BIOS mode, as the UEFI BIOS uses the GUID Partition Table "GPT" instead of Master Boot Record "MBR". The MBR has only one System Reserved Partition as GPT having 3 partitions on the hard drive.

Sounds like a driver issue, or a bad Windows installation. You've done a restore, and you get the same result. 2 things come to my mind.

1. Bad Windows Installation Media from HP. Believe me, a lot of times a prebuilt system with OEM software will sometimes be bad. I had an Acer laptop with Windows 7 and the Audio didn't work. Tried reinstalling drivers, did everything, couldn't get it to work. I ended up wiping all the preinstalled media, installed my retail copy of Windows 7 Pro, and the Audio worked. Bad preinstalled media for sure. Bad media can cause issues with drivers.

2. Faulty Hardware. Could have a key sticking on your keyboard causing the lock screen to unlock quickly, or could be a problem with hard drive, memory, or motherboard, if you get random freeze ups after updates are installed.

Those are a few possible causes.

I've recently reinstalled Windows 7 due to this problem, and everything was running smoothly up until today (approximately 4 days after I reinstalled the OS). This morning, I attempted to boot up my computer as usual, and it simply hardlocked as soon as the Welcome screen came up.

This hardlock only recently started happening with my PC when I hooked up a fourth monitor to my GPU, to produce a 3x1 monitor arrangement, plus my Cintiq tablet. (Currently, the Cintiq is in the shop for repairs.) When that configuration was plugged in, the computer started hardlocking. After that, I reinstalled Windows 7 over the weekend, and it was all working fine. Up until now.

There have been no BSOD's at all - even with the hard locks, and I attempted to use the driver verifier to see what was causing it, as this is my greatest suspicion. I rarely find that my computer builds have problems, though I don't have the tools to test my RAM yet (would like some help in this regard).

This is my workstation that I use for my art. I would like to resolve this ASAP before the week is over. Please help! ; 3

Have you tried the System Repair Disc you can make in Win7's Control Panel, Backup and Restore? It has to be for either 32-bit or 64-bit but your System Specs do show you have the 64-bit version of Windows. It doesn't necessarily have to be made from a specific computer.

What happens when you try to get into Safe Mode? The next most common issue for black screen hangs is a problem with the hard drive. You can try these commands from the Recovery Console ( http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-install-the-windows-xp-recovery-console/ )They will attempt to correct issues with the File System on your hard drive.FIXMBRFIXBOOTCHKDSK /RIf that does not fix it, then I'd suggest a bootable diagnostic available from the manufacturer of your hard drive. There's a list of the most common one's in this thread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/28744/hard-drive-installation-and-diagnostic-tools/ The diagnostic will tell you if your hard drive is starting to fail (or not).

Hi,

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

Hello. I am trying to fix an HP G62-367DX Notebook PC.
Operating sys: Win 7, 64bit, AMD Turion(tm) 530II Dual-Core Processor, 4GB, 2.50GHz. I had this laptop since December of 2010 and on June of 2013 is when I used my notebook PC and was initially of no use. I have been working on my laptop on and off since. I am not afraid to open the sucker up and get this thing up and running.

The problem started out with what most ppl call it, the "blue screen of death". Like most ppl, I did ignore the blue screen and did a restart which brought me to the normal Windows screen and then it would start back up just fine. I found this in Device Manager's (Hidden Files):
Non-Plug and Play Drivers
-! ehdrv
-! epfwwfp
-! Security Processor Loader Driver
I am not sure if it has anything to do with what it was the blue screen situation, but I tried searching on the net on what it all meant and to see if I was able to fix it, but before I was able to do something about it, the blue screen kept popping up and it was getting worse.

The problem progressed to where on Windows startup it would just stop there, blue screen would pop up and of course I had to restart it and do an F8 key press for Safe Mode. I had to work on Safe Mode for a good couple of weeks before I can figure out the problem/s. I believe I had went into the system and found out it had something to do with some kind of error... *sigh* I did write it down, but that was like a month ago and I am unable to locate my ... As my title suggest Screen Saver / Lock screen Slideshow / Turn off display after 5 mins are not working under Win 10
The Lock screen Slideshow is there when Win 10 starts but only shows ONE image, never moves to another.
THINGS I've done so far to get any of these working ...Screen Saver / Lock screen Slideshow / Turn off display after 5 mins
I’ve turned off all the Wake on lan functions
Tried different folder/ images for the lockscreen Slideshow ,window spotlight and picture
Tried to set new power options , was able to get SLEEP to show up in "Start" as it was not there before, but once click , the display DID turn off, but wouldn’t turn back on with mouse movement keyboard presses, had to do a hard reboot. Win 10 started without issue and the SLEEP mode was no longer aviable via the power "start" menu.
Anyone have a clue how to get all of these working. Really would like my display to turn off after 5 mins , and the Screen saver to work , the Lockscreen I'm not fussed about

A:unable to customize lock screen, start screen, account picture

If you're using the official release of Windows 8 Enterprise trial, you'll need to activate it. PC Settings doesn't have an entry to Activate, so you'll need to go to the Desktop to do so. The little Action Center icon on the lower right hand side (a little flag) should have a red X. Click on it, and it should say you need to activate. Do so, and you'll get those customizing features unlocked.

Whenever my laptop wakes up from sleep and shows the lock screen, I click and type in my PIN as normal. But on the lock screen at the top right, there's a Cortana box usually giving an example of what I can do, like 'tap and say remind me to water the plants when I get home'.

The problem is this box stays on the screen after the computer is unlocked, and displays semi-transparently in the top left over all other windows, with the only way to remove it is to double click, have a Cortana window display full screen and then close it.

I'd like to find a way of either fixing this or disabling Cortana from the lock screen altogether as I never use this feature. Any tips would be appreciated.

The image is still present when I click on Start button on desktop and in Control Panel. I also tried to set it again.

Hello,

I would like to fix this problem, In short, I have been uninstalling itunes and recently performed system restore, a few times and I dont remember having this problem before system restore. There is a few second (10-20) before and after the welcome screen which loads the desktop. The only culprit I can think of is the system restore.

I am currently using the most recent system restore and no luck at all.

Edit once windows has finished everything runs smoothly

A:Black screen delay before welcome screen and after

In my experience with my own machines, it's pretty common for Windows to do that. It's a pause for Windows to load background software before activating the Desktop Window Manager. If it's really a concern, you could look in the Event Log and see if there are any errors on bootup. It might help you to zero in on a cause.

My guess is that iTunes left something behind on the uninstall, and Windows is looking for associated files to load and not finding them. But as I said, it's only a guess.

I'm gonna report it to Microsoft.

Hi was wondering if others experience this. Trying to figure out the cause and if there is a fix.

When I turn on or restart my computer after the teal windows logo with the spinning wheel the screen will flash off quickly then come back on black and then 10 seconds later show the lock screen.

It's kind of annoying to have this delay happening and wondering if it's normal or something that can be fixed.

A:Black Screen after teal windows before lock screen

Hi BFG,

That sounds normal to me. The only variation might be "how long" you pause on the black screen (while your boot is being processed). Now, for some, that black screen might flash for only a few seconds but for others, it could last quite some time. My advice is to do nothing and live with it.

hi,
first to say: I hope I've posted this problem in a proper place, if not so plz forgive me

the last time I changed my OS, I faced a problem, the drive "C:" root folder was write protected (it was not before, I could easily create texts etc). I decided to let it be in that situation, the problem started while trying to install applications, the applications were installed incompletely or partly installed, so I decided to take ownership of the whole drive "C:". I think this occurred because of Sharing rules, anyway I took ownership of the entire drive except some sys files such as: hiberfil.sys etc. Before doing this the whole operating system was working properly but after doing so, my above mentioned problems solved, but after that, my lock screen image has gone "Blue"! and I guessed that ownership causes the problem, so I tried so many solutions, including reinstalling a fresh copy of windows or trying the method mentioned in this link, but nothing changed . first I'll share my current lock screen image to show you I've changed it, after I'll share a shot of my lock screen blue image! plz help me this is so annoying!

Every time I Restart my Laptop, the Lock Screen does not show the Welcome Screen and skips directly to the User Account login screen. Actually, it shows a darkish blue screen for a couple of seconds and then jumps to the user account login.

When I use the logout function or the shutdown (and I power it back on) everything works normally.

I have ran SFC / Scannow in windows (8.1 by the way).

Any suggestion ?

Thanks.

I may have misunderstood what you are asking but does this tutorial help?

In Windows 8 and 8.1 there are two "Lock" screens.
The user lock screen is the one that displays when a user locks the PC while still signed in to Windows, and when the user is selected on the sign in screen, times out, and returns to the lock screen. Each user is able to change their lock screen background image to an image of their choice. The default Lock screen image is the one that displays when there are no users currently signed in to Windows or selected on the sign in screen.

My caps lock, and number lock button on the keyboard don't have a light on it and the pop up that is supposed to pop up doesn't show up on screen.
I figured by doing a clean install it would all magically appear again... I was wrong, I have tweaked everything I could think of looking/trying to change setting from the keyboard in control panel, (including messing around with ease of use) and Gateways so called "support" area was of no help, as well as googling the issue has led me down a path of useless tips, I have also looked on this forum for help.

Hey I need immediate help!

It's my sis' previously-formatted HP Pavilion dv5201tx! The problem is as the title above. I can go into safe mode. I've used system restore twice. And in Documents and Settings folder I noticed it has:

Administrator
Administrator.computer description name
Administrator.computer description name.000
username1
username2

Is it creating more user folders? At some point Administrator.computer description name.000 wasn't there. Corrupted registry hive? I'm not sure! Restarted many times, used Last known good configuration, and it's still black after the boot screen. Please help quick, she uses it a lot. Thank anybody so much..

Hi all, Im having a problem and I will try to explain it the best I can. I have a Dell Dimension 4400 1.7g 256 ram with the Nvidia Gforce 3 Ti 200 video card. About a year ago I was playing a game and I started noticing a glitch so to speak, or a pause for split second about every five seconds or so. I used Dell support and they were clueless so they installed a new motherboard and memory, and we reformated my harddrive. Everything was fine then, well, about two months ago, same thing happened but this time no warranty so I reformated and everything fine once again. Well here we go for the third time of this happening. I really dont want to format again.
Can anyone help me figure this out. Its not only with gaming, it will do it also if I am watching a Video too!

Here's a link to what happens to the screen of my laptop: http://s987.photobucket.com/albums/a...t=MOV00830.flv
Sorry, I couldn't take a screenshot.

The first time it happened, I brought it to the distributor and they said that the LCD of my laptop was broken. They fixed it, brought it back to me, and everything was fine. The second time it happened, I asked my brother for help, and he said it was because of one of the Windows updates. He uninstalled the Windows update and again, it got fixed. But then the glitch kept on coming back and coming back. I've already stopped updating my laptop but the glitch still comes back. Help?

I hope the details are enough. Thanks in advance!

Ok I've been suffering this issue with Windows 10 for as long as I can remember, and it's stopping me using it as the primary OS.

In short I have two, intermittent issues which nothing I do seems to resolve.

1: After waking up from sleep and typing my username password and hitting return, the screen goes black. Cursor moves, Windows + P operates (Screen options do appear from the right) but doesn't actually make any difference, and I'm stuck having to hard reset because ctrl alt del doesn't work either. This isn't an every time issue, hence googling seems to fail miserably because all the examples are people getting it every time. This, for me, is a 3 in 10 regularity.

2: Logging a user off occasionally sees the lock screen ... locking up. Ironically. Mouse moves, and power button DOES work but that's all that works.

These issues are plaguing me and I just cannot fix them - endless googling has left me empty handed, and I've tried disabling SLI. No help. I've tried disabling apps. No help. Nothing I do makes any difference and event viewer doesn't seem to reveal anything useful either.

Anyone got any idea how I can resolve this?

System is:

132GB SSD OCZ
2TB Seagate HDD
4790K
2x980Ti SLI
32 GB RAM @ 1800 Corsair
Asus Z97-A
Windows 10 & Windows 7 dual boot 64.

So recently i have been having this lovely Fuzzy colorful dots streaming up and down my screen when i do this:

Keep in mind my computer is a laptop.
When my computer goes to sleep without the power cord plugged into it,
if I then plug the power cord into my laptop and bring it out of sleep the colorness begins and wont go away until either i restart my computer or put it back into sleep unplug the power cord then bring it back out of sleep, then i can plug the power cord in.

Any ideas why this is happening and how i can fix it. I have tried going back on video drivers and software to no avail i have tried reverting any windows modifications i have done no difference. I've also tried disabling aero.

I also attached some pictures of how it looks on my screen when it does it.

It almost sounds like a hardware thing. Did it just pop up all of a sudden? Does this glitch appear in safe mode?

As you can see in the picture, the boarder of the screen and the desktop background don't match up correctly, a decent sized gap between the two. I did not have this problem originally, just after I reformatted. The resolution is set at 1920 x 1080 which is native for my monitor and supported by my graphics card. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure that you have installed drivers for your Radeon. Download it from here: ATI Catalyst

I recently built this new system. As far as I know (I don't use the system often, it was built for someone else), there are no other problems except that coming out of sleep, the log in screen colors are all glitched. The user/icons are also, except that as you select each one, it un-glitches, while the rest of the screen remains the same.

Hello everyone!
I have been having a really strange and aggravating problem with my laptop screen.
I am a computer science major, so I have been trying to diagnose this problem aggressively, but no luck. Googling my symptoms didn't bring me any more information either.

First things first, the specs:
SAGER 9280
CLEVO CO. D900F
Windows 7 PRO x64
2.67 gigahertz Intel Core i7 920
6136 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies LTD 6.00 09/01/2009
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M [Display adapter]
Generic PnP Monitor [built-in] (17.2"vis, January 2007)

In case you don't know, Sager is an importer and reseller of CLEVO computers, a Taiwan based manufacturer, know for designing and building some of the best high-end systems. These clevos get resold by sager to many companies in bulk, resold again, stripped down, and get the Dell or HP logo slapped on. I bought mine from higher up in the food chain.

The problem itself is really hard to describe, so I did my best to film it, and uploaded it to youtube for you. Don't worry if you don't know what you're looking at at first, the graphics glitch becomes much more apparent halfway through the video. I first filmed it during a fullscreened video, and then while idling on the desktop.
I connected my laptop to another monitor, and confirmed that the glitch only happens on my screen.

This has been happening since I got the computer in November 2009.

A:Awful Screen Glitch... Please Help!

I will first admit I cannot diagnose your problem and I know you didn't ask my advice on this; but, I think attempting to fix this yourself is ill advised. Let's say you happen onto something that accidentally clears the problem and the problem stays cleared just long enough to get you out of the warranty. Then it comes back.

As much as you might hate to be without it for the two weeks, do you really want to risk the above scenario?

Hi, first post here by a rather happy Lenovo Yoga 13 + Windows 8 user.

As the topic says, is it possible to have the lockscreen turn on automatically after a few minutes?

As it is now I can only get to the lock screen after waking up the computer from the screen saver. I would like to have it configured so that the traditional screen saver is bypassed and it goes straight to the lock screen and stays there forever until I swipe it up.

I think the lockscreen is a very beautiful feature and it's great to see all these small notifications. It would be wonderful to just be able to glance at my computer and seeing these notifications without actually having to touch it.

I feel it's kind of useless to only see the lock screen while you're actually logging in, because then you'll see your notifications anyway on your start screen.

A:Can I use the lock screen as a screen saver?

The easiest way is to right click your account icon on top right of Start Screen and Lock it.

Don't know of a way to auto lock.

I own a Compaq Presario F572, running on XP Home.

It has an NVidia GeForce Go 6100.

On the left part of my screen, there is a vertical strip about an inch wide that has problems some times. There will be a yellow line, then some yellow mush within that inch when I move a window to a certain spot. It seems to only happen in certain situations (for example it isn't right now, but if I bring down a drop-down box in a website, it shows up.

If needed I will post photos of the glitch.

Is there any simple way to remedy this, or is it a serious hardware problem?

Thank you.

I've had this issue since I got the laptop but it wasn't bothering me too much until recently. Whenever I do anything involving full screen it glitches. My windows bar will pop up like I'm alt tabbing but it won't change the screen. In movies it's no biggie but during any game it auto pauses the game like I switched apps and back in a billionth of a second. Borderless window mode doesn't work nor does closing extra background applications. My Lenovo self test says that it's geometry calculations are off or something but Googling  the issue says it's a common thing that has no effect on my machine.  As a side note, my hard drive tool says I have 4 slots for hard drives with one m2 and one sata already taken. I've looked at pictures of this laptop opened up and I don't see any extra slots. I'd be down for another ssd if I can.  Anyway,  full screen gaming is driving me bonkers now with fallout pausing every 40 freakin seconds so I'm down if anyone has any ideas. It does seem to get better after hours of gaming. The interval increases and decreases between pauses.

A:Full screen glitch and extra hdd?

Seems like an application or background service is causing this. Check your game settings and enable "exclusive fullscreen" if there is such an option. Also run a malware scanAs for the slots, dont mind, other tools will also mention 4memory slots, but there are only 2. Its a usual thing with such tools PS. Do disable the touchpad and check if this happens again

First of all, i'm sorry if I posted this on the wrong forum. I wasn't sure which forum this thread fit in, and all of it happened while I was updating my VGA drivers...

Anyway, this really weird glitch happened to me after I tried to update my Intel HD Graphics driver. I updated the graphics driver in hope that I could run Sonic Generations a little smoother, but then I stumbled on this weird youtube glitch. It's an Acer Aspire 5742G, and I bought it for my brother this christmas. I was hoping you could help me out with this...

When I watch a youtube video in full screen, it looks all really weird. It's very hard to describe it, so I printed the screen to show exactly what's going on:

http://api.ning.com/files/DUxauHtfbE...eenShot001.bmp

As you can see the bottom bar, showing all the numbers and stuff, looks weird. And the video quality is also pretty messed up. It's like it changed for a lower resolution for an instance, or something. This is like nothing i've ever seen before! I unninstalled and updated VGA drivers lots of times before, but this never happened to me. I was wondering if anyone could help me out here...

Thank you for your time.

A:Youtube Full Screen Glitch

Jo?o,

Try getting the free version of Revo uninstaller: Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems
Use it to completely uninstall every bit of your graphics drivers (any audio, video, etc. that came with the update).

If you don't want to use the uninstaller, use control panel's built in uninstaller. However, this may not help solve the problem, as remenants of the previous driver may still remain.

Now, go into windows updates and install all important updates, and any "compatability" updates in the optional section. Next, redownload the graphics update and install it. This is the website for it, make sure you select the correct opperating system: http://support.acer.com/product/defa...x?modelId=3278

Find the control panel for the graphics card and set the resolution and other settings according to how you would like it. There is also a cleartype text function in windows 7, you might try it out: Windows ClearType Tuner. You can also enable cleartype in IE under internet options>Advanced and looking down the list for the option.

Hi. I have a problem that I haven't encountered before and I'm not sure what to even try with this one.

When I came home (from buying new RAM, ironically enough) my screen was all wigged out. I'm not sure really how to describe it, except it was as if the reception was bad. I could tell that the Windows 7 login screen was there, but everything was so distorted that I couldn't make out any letters or pictures, only a static blur of colors in horizontal lines. Not sure if that makes sense.

Anyways, I restarted my computer and when it came back on, the first screen that has my video card information was fine, then the screen that says F9-boot menu F10-setup etc. came up fine but when the screen that should say Start Windows Normally or Start in Safe Mode came up, it was static again, but this time only gray and black.

I really doubt it's my video card because I have an onboard and a PCI and the same thing happens on both.

What can this possibly be?

Today I have had problems trying to install Windows XP on a fresh hard drive. I have tried installing both Windows XP Home and Pro, and both have had the same error at one point or another.

I most commonly get it at the blue setup screen, right as it is at the "Please wait while setup copies files to the windows installation folder" screen. It gets close to the end, in the 80-90% range, and then all of a sudden I will get a strange, glitchy, pixelated pattern on the screen and that's it. I have to turn the system off and try again. As I said, this has happened on both Home and Pro, and I even tried an Ubuntu disc and it did the same thing, both when trying to install it and when trying to run from a CD. I have done fresh installs many times and this is the first time I've run across this problem.

I'm using a Seagate Barracuda 160 GB hard drive. I had a hard time getting it to do a regular format, and had to do the "Quick format", and of course it has stalled at various points. Though when I go back to try and install again and it asks me what partition I would like to put it on, I see that it is formatted.

Like I said, I haven't ever run across this problem before, and I'm not sure if it is a problem with XP or with the hard drive itself. Would appreciate some advice. Thanks in advance.

A:[SOLVED] Glitch Screen During XP Installation

Hi Again, I'm sorry to double post, but I tested this again today and I'm getting the same results. I have a DFI motherboard with a diagnostic LED on it that gives readouts if there is an error. Right now I am getting "FF" which means everything is running as normal. I am wondering if this could be a video card problem because of the glitchy pixelated look of the screen, however I am not getting that readout on the LED. It stopped at like 99% today, and right now I'm just letting it 'sit' to see if it actually goes anywhere.

It's been a while since I installed XP, after the blue "Please wait while setup copies files to the windows installation folder" is finished, is that when it goes to the windows setup that lets you put in the time, date, etc etc? Right now I'm kind of leaning towards it being a graphics card problem, but I can't recall the order in which things happen to figure out if this glitch happens when it goes to more intricate graphics than the blue screen.

I'm even more confused as to why this happens with ubuntu as well. Same error just at a different point.

I installed and activated my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my Laptop PC. The official release. When I installed it worked perfectly, Boot Time Duration was about 35 - 45 seconds (measured with Event Viewer). Then I installed drivers for my PC. After installing drivers, I noticed that startup was much slower and after reinstalling system and drivers about 10 times and some searching on the web, I found out that the problem was my graphics card driver, which had built in Catalyst Control Center, software which was developed for editing graphics card settings, which I don't need (I am sure Catalyst Control Center caused delay because other drivers didn't affect welcome screen display time and boot time - after I installed them, Boot Time Duration was almost the same). So I installed system and drivers eleventh time in a row without Catalyst Control Center and it worked fine. Boot Time was about 50 - 60 seconds and I was very satisfated. After that I had some problems configuring Windows Update, so i had to reinstall system and drivers again. I did it, and welcome screen delay happened again. I have to wait 20-30 seconds watching 'Welcome Screen' before displaying desktop every time I turn on my PC. Boot Time Duration is sometimes over 120 seconds.

Before every installation, I formatted my 150 GB (C:) hard drive (I don't know whether formatting hard drive can affect boot time). As I stated, hard drive was formatted more than 10 times. I used Disk Defragmenter and fragmented % of P... Read more

A:Welcome Screen Delay

SOLVED!

Finally! Suprisingly, the key thing was: DISK DEFRAGMENTER.

As said above, I have already tried Disk Defragmenter and it didn't seem helpful. But when I ran it last time, it behaved in a different way. When I tried it for the first time, I analyzed my Local Disk (C (button 'Analyze'), fragmented % was 4 %. After that, I pressed 'Defragment'. Disk Defragmenter did this:
1. analyzing;
2. defragmentation;
3. consolidation.
Complete process finished with Pass 3.

The last time I ran it, it was different. It did this:
1. analyzing;
2. defragmentation;
3. relocation;
4. consolidation.
Complete process finished with Pass 9. It also took much more time to complete.

From my experience there are some thing that I (don't) suggest.
1. Startup Repair from system installation disk. In my case, it wasn't helpful, it even worsened Boot Time. After I had ran it, another bad thing happened: after 'Welcome Screen', there was a little black screen delay, before the appearance of the desktop.
2. Important and helpful thing was Disk Cleanup. After I had ran it, I noticed slight improvement, not only in Boot Time, but in overall performance.
3. Be careful when you install Drivers. When I bought my laptop, there were too many unneeded drivers. They take a lot of RAM, slowing down startup time and overall performance.
