8.1 update completed but problematic

Q: 8.1 update completed but problematic

I'll give some background.

I have a tri-boot setup. Windows 8 one ssd, windows 7 pro on a second ssd and ubuntu 13.04 on a partition on a 2 gig raid 1. The boot partition is on the windows 7 ssd. All drives are on the same Intel controller. Prior to the 8.1 attempt it worked. I'd boot the w7 ssd and a black win7 style boot screen would appear with the 3 OS choices. I'd been using win 8 as primary since it's release with no real issues.

I updated through the store early today and the process had a hitch after the first reboot but I rebooted and it completed the install. Windows 8.1 started and walked me though an initial setup. Once in, all looked pretty much unchanged. The only issued was it asked me to reinstall some XLan software.

I rebooted to check my other OS's and the problems began. I boot up, it loaded the blue win8 boot screen with all 3 OS present when I attempted to boot ubuntu it went to a black screen with no possible input. Hard rebooting brought up the grub bootloader (not win8 bootscreen) and I was able to enter ubuntu. Same thing happened with win 7 pro. I soft rebooted and the win 8 bootscreen appeared. Choosing win 7 took me to a hung black screen - hard reboot directly started up win 7. Restarting to win 8 bootscreen again and choosing win8.1 took me to another black screen - Hard reboot from there started up a win 8 repair process.

This is always the case with each of the 3 OS's. I have found that I can get into win8 if I enter through safe mode or if I choose alternate option 1 (enable debugging mode). If I enter through option 1 more often than not I get a blue screen error pointing to iaStorA.sys. In all cases I can never boot directly I have to boot after restarting and entering the repair screen.

I suspect a bad install. At the very least there seems to be a problem with the boot loader. Is there a simple way to reinstall 8.1 or return to 8 so I can reinstall from the store?

I'm usually pretty comfortable with installs but I'm a bit lost on this one any help appreciated.

thanks, DArt

edit: ok the iaStorA.sys error is caused by speedfan as it does drives analysis. I was able to get win 8 to boot by using easyBCD to set the debug flag on. This doesn't explain why I need debug to or solve the problem with booting but it is a start.

edit2 (grammar and info):Both win7 and ubuntu will boot from the win 8 boot screen with the debug flag active.

A: 8.1 update completed but problematic

I have the exact same problem. I even had the XLan error you described. Once I restarted the computer, it always go to a black screen. I do not have multiple OS's to boot into, but the black screen always comes up after the little blue windows 8 loading screen.

If you get your issue solved, please report back.

When I tried your suggestion of enabling Debugging, it loaded up. However, 1-2 minutes later it would freeze and I would have to push the reset button on the machine. In Safe Mode, I didn't have any of the freezing, but when I tried to uninstall Norton Internet Security, it would freeze. After a restart, I downloaded the Norton Removal Tool, and removed Norton. At this point, starting Windows 8.1 with Debugging allows me to stay freeze-free. However, trying to start up without Debugging gives me the same black screen.

Another thing to note is that when I have all non-Microsoft services stopped, I still get the black screen upon bootup. I'm not quite sure what Debugging mode does in terms of bootup, but its definitely a workaround for now. I used msconfig.exe to keep debugging turned on for now.

Again, if someone figures out the fix, report back.

Good afternoon everyone,

I just received an alert from Windows Update that KB915597 (Windows Defender - listed as Important) is ready to install. However, when doing both a Google search and a search here, I find quite a lot of past posts going back a few years in which people have experienced significant problems after installing this particular update. Info about the update also indicates once it is installed - it cannot be uninstalled.

Given the problems that have arisen with quite a few of Microsoft's Windows Updates/patches in the past year or so - I'd prefer to be reasonably assured this "out-of-patch-Tuesday" update isn't going to cause issues. Particularly given the fact once installed, it can't be uninstalled.
(I do not see this particular update shown in the list of currently installed updates on my computer).

My question: Has anyone already downloaded/installed this update today and experienced any issues with it?

Thank you for your time and any feedback!

I updated Firefox a few days ago and have had nothing but troubles:
My tabs are not being kept open from session to session.  I have checked it as a preference on FF (Tools/Options/General)  and in the config: sys ("3" is checked).
The menu bar (3 line at upper right) is non-responsive; most options greyed out.
Cannot "bookmark all tabs".  A box comes up with "enter" at bottom but not a place to enter information/title of bookmark group.
Dashlane not in tool bar but have am working with them separately.
1) Can I roll back firefox?  Updated to FF 45.0.1.  Was forcibly upgraded to Window 10.  On Dell PC.
2) Mozilla told me to update graphics drivers and/or disable extensions.  All are up to date and no problems in past.
3) Also said something about Hardware Acceleration?  Don't want to mess around with that if I don't have to.
Thanks for any and all help!!!!!

A:Firefox Update Problematic

It sounds like something in FF has gotten corrupted.  I'm running FF 45.0.1 under Windows 10 and am not seeing any of the problems you mention, so I think the simplest thing to do would be just to save your bookmarks, then uninstall and reinstall FF.  Other things you might try would be to run SFC and you could try System Restore to a point prior to the beginning of the problem.  You could also check your Downloads folder to see if you might have a stub for downloading an earlier version if that's really what you want to do.  To run SFC, open an administrator command prompt and issue this command: sfc /scannow .  That will scan for any corrupt files and attempt to repair them.
FWIW I couldn't figure out what you meant by "I have checked it as a preference on FF (Tools/Options/General)  and in the config: sys ("3" is checked)."  I don't see anything in Tools/Options like that.
 Good luck.

Among the Patch Tuesday updates of August 2014, IIRC, KB2976897 was one of the problematic security updates. I just did a clean install of Windows 7 x64, and KB2976897 is being offered as an update. In checking MS support MS14-045 there is no notice of withdrawal, or replacement. Can someone confirm that KB2976897 is good to go. I ask out of an abundance of caution. :-)

A:KB2976897 update offered after clean install. Wasn't it problematic?

I don't recall any specific problems with this patch - and as far as I can see it's not been updated since release- although there were reports in the scaremongers, Iif I remember right the problems were ascribed in the end to prior infections.
It shouldn't cause any problems.

When updating to Windows 10 Anniversery Update (1607) everything goes fine till the first restart of the computer.Nothing happens even if you wait for about 8 hours. The screen is blank and the keyboard does not respond. After having turned of the computer and started it again you get the information: "Restore the earlier version of Windows..."  (Windows10 for home use).

Just wanted to add my story, similar to above.  Product# F3F15UA#ABA, 10" Pavilion notebook.  Win 10 Anniversary Edition update will not install. Machine gets to 32% and then locks up completely; grey blank screen. Have to unplug and remove battery to shut down.   After powering back, automaticaly recovered to previous version of Win 10 (1511).  Machine now almost unusable since it spends all day re-downloading the update files and then doing an automatic update reboot every evening. This has happened 4 times already; now keeping it in airplane mode.  Was on MS Assure service for hours.  2nd  tier guy said to just wait for MS to come out with a revised version of the update. Tried installing MS registry update fix (MSI) issued 10/5, but did not fix the problem. I have a completely clean machine, all drivers up-to-date, nothing installed except Office 365 and 7-Zip.  Installed Win 10 1511 as a complete replacement (OS and all apps) a few months ago and performance improved tremendously.  Except for this update problem, after the OS replacement PC works very well (for a slow, under-memory PC).  I mainly use it to take to meetings to give PowerPoint presentations, for which it works just fine.  I never do email with it or download apps. Above reply suggests updating from a USB after a image backup.  Can try that to see if I get a better result, but wonder if it would be better to skip "update" and, i... I tried to update to 1.7 and it failed.  We had to run a mongo change regarding the certificate.  When that was completed the install was fine, but we started getting an invalid cert on the web interface.  I finally dug into it and saw that
the ata gateways were no longer talking as well.
I updated the cert so i have that cleared up but the gateways wont connect.  I updated them manually by downloading the installer and the install went fine but they still wont connect.  I decided to look at the cert thumbprint of the package /
json file and it is below.

What would i need to get these to connect again?

Greetings, I am new to these forums, but I am in need of assistance.

My computer has some problems. During gameplay, and rarely browsing the internet/watching movies, my screen will turn into a boatload of 2 tone vertical lines. (The color they are depends on what the screen looks like at the time.). Then about 10 seconds after that it goes away, my screen turns black and my game comes back on. Or in some cases it will stay black and my game won't return. I usually play WoW but it happens in all my games.

My System is:

AMD 64 bit 3200+
ATI x1900GT
Corsair XMS 3200 (I think) Ram.

Hello, I need some help with my PC. The first sign of trouble was a few days back, when the computer froze/hanged during boot up, at the "Verifying DMI Pool Data" screen. Over the next few days, I get random computer hang, shortcuts at the desktop being moved around and changing their icons, as well as a Ask toolbar in Firefox. I did a Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware just now and it found C:\Windows\System32\secushr.dat (Malware.Trace), quarantined and deleted successfully. There is no options to remove the Ask toolbar, both in Firefox and Control Panel. And I just uninstalled ATi's display driver to see if it is the cause for the random hangs. Here is my HJT log :

I need help with my problematic computer. I used to be able to play call of duty 4 with recommended settings for a few months but after a while my monitor would go blank on me but my computer and game would still be running I know this because I could still hear what was going on. After waiting for a minute or so everything would go back to normal. I thought it was the graphics card so I checked the temperature using many programs such as HWMonitor, SpeedFan and GPU-Z and they all said my graphics card was around 100?C which apparently is bad... So I ripped off the sides of my computer tower and put a mini desk fan next to the graphics card and managed to lower the card to around 56?C. My 2nd problem is a bit more complicated. I used to be able to put the computer to sleep and wake it up just fine. But now if I put the computer to sleep and wake it up, my monitor, keyboard, and mouse don’t work. The monitor goes into standby, the mouse and keyboard lights don’t even come on and the only way to get them all working is to hold the power button for 5 seconds and shut down the computer and start it back up again. This is where the 3rd problem comes in. After doing all that and managing to get to the desktop, the video driver always reinstalls itself and I have to restart and things go back to normal until it’s time to put the computer to sleep, then it’s back to square one with the unresponsive monitor, mouse and keyboard. Even shutting down the computer a... Read more

Currently running DivX 5.0.2, saw that there had been an update released, and decided to grab it. I despise spyware, and don't have any money to pass out (though I wish I did), so I have the barebones version. I found no Upgrade link for my version type, so I simply downloaded the entire installer, and went to work.

I ran the installer straight off the bat; It automatically removed everything from the 5.0.2 Bundle, went great until the very end of the install. I then recieve a "Divx503Bundle has caused an error in DIVX.DLL". So I hit close, the installer goes to the "finished" screen, and nothing else appears to have happened. I went ot reconfigure the codec, because there were several new options, and received "Config has caused an error in DIVXDEC.AX". So I hit close, and nothing else happened. I checked to make sure that the program was no longer lurking in the Explorer task list, and it wasn't. Ran the player itself. Played the video OK, same as last time I tried, with v5.0.2. When I went to uninstall, to go back to v5.0.2, after using the "Remove DivX Bundle 5.0.3" shortcut in the Programs menu, I received another error, simular to before: "Unvise32 has caused an error in DIVX.DLL". So I hit close, and then the same err appeared again. It when through the uninstall without another problem, and reported that it was uninstalled sucessfully. So far, this is the only two things that I noticed but I am pretty sure that more problems will arise as I am using more and more my computer. I am displeased with ComboFix. I had to call my support and they were aware of issues that happened while using ComboFix. Apparently, they often fixed problems that ComboFix leave the consumer with. A:ComboFix problematic

This is one of the reasons why we recommend not to use ComboFix on your own (see here). There are risks involved and we would prefer it if someone (a trained expert) who knows how to resolve any issues that may arise when running the tool, is supervising it's use.As a general policy, Bleeping Computer does not offer advice on how to run ComboFix unless we asked someone to run it or if there is a problem with the computer caused by running the tool. We recommend that people should not be using ComboFix without being advised to do so by a trained expert (see here) who is assisting them deal with a malware problem. When issues arise due to complex malware infections, problems running ComboFix (i.e. stalling, hanging, crashing) or with other security tools causing conflicts, experts are usually aware of them and can advise what should or should not be done while providing individual assistance. When false detections are identified, experts have access to the developer and can report them so he can investigate, confirm and make corrections. Those attempting to use ComboFix on their own do not have such information and are at risk when running the tool in an unsupervised environment. While our policy is not to offer advice on running ComboFix unless we asked someone to run it, we are willing to assist with resolving problems caused after using it and we are certainly willing to help with malware disinfection.Since you already ran Combofix due to possible malware infection, its log s... Now, CPU-Z is as nice as to show me that my RAM is currently running at a slow-poke-ish 409.4MHz. NOT what i paid for (not to mention that a week later the RAM price dropped 40 dinerros)

Enough of me talkin smack, here's the CPU-Z screenshots.

I have been having problems with this update from the first time it updated. I didn't think it was Firefox but decided after everything else it had to be, therefore I uninstalled the first update and went back to the previous version. Everything returned to normal until it updated again, I must have accidentally clicked on update.

At any rate it updated and worked fine for a minute then started back with the same problems like snail surfing to a point it just got on my last nerve. I uninstalled it again and now I'm using 3.6.10 and there are no problems except that I'm getting constant reminders to update to 3.6.13 from both Firefox and Secunia. I don't want or need the bother so far I've just ignored the reminders. Any information or similar problems with Firefox v3.6.13. Thanks!

A:Firefox 3.6.13 Is Problematic!

If you're having trouble with the latest Firefox 3.6, check your addons for compatibility issues. Disable them all, then restart Firefox. If this solves the problem, start re-enabling them one at a time, restarting Firefox each time until the problem reappears.

Also, you could upgrade to Firefox 4. It's in the final beta stage at the moment, and is due to be released as a full stable version in about 3-4 weeks.

I'm completely new to this but in a moment of complete insanity I disabled my anti spyware programs, virus checkers etc. I am now paying the price.....S**T. Spysweeper caught virtumonde and a potentially rootkit masked registry whatever that is!! Zonealarm also keeps asking if .exe files can access the internet such as TMP5E.exe, TMP892.exe and seemingly other random numbers. I think I know I have a prolem but have no real idea how to fix it. Any help would be massivley appreciated. Many thanks. Stuart.

I have an issue with my Sony Vaio Flip (recently refreshed to Windows 8) that is not allowing me to load Windows properly. I have been told by multiple people now that the best thing I can do is a factory reset and load a copy of windows from an external hard drive (I have no CD drive). My school offers a free copy of Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. Would it be a bad idea to try to load Windows 10 in place of a new copy of 8?

So my buddy got the Worm.Win32.NetSky virus on his computer and I told him that I could fix it ( done it about 10ish times already). Well the problem that I am getting is that explorer.exe is locking up the computer when its trying to run. So I tried to boot into safe mode and then i get BSOD when the drivers are trying to be loaded. So I tried to repair windows but the computer is unable to read the Win XP CD and USB. So now I am at a in pass on what to do and any help would be very appreciated.

After reading this thread it seems like this is the unfix able virus.... So I am gonna start bootin up in ubuntu and try to fix it from there.

Hi everyone,
I know this might be a topic that has been discussed many times on many forums but I have tried everything I could on my own and really require your help :X...
My computer has recently (in the last few months but I maybe not noticed it) given me trouble with music, no matter if it came from a media player or internet. I get these lags/glitchs every ~1-10 secs (but not quite regular) and that seem to appear as soon as I start a new tasks or open a new tab on my browser for example. I thought it might be sound card related and bought a Soundblaster to see if that would change anything.. it did not. Then changed my graphic card for a smaller one, again with no luck. Last week I reinstalled Windows and updated all the drivers I could (even motherboard) but I still have the same problem.
It is a decent (but old) machine, or at least has enough for my everyday things (I can play BF4 or any game i want). This sound problem is really irritating as I just got a turntable that I obviously can't use with my PC.
Here are my machine's components (with Windows 7 Ultimate 64)
- Intel core 2 Quad Q9300 (2.50 GHz)
- Gigabyte G41MT-D3 Motherboard
- 8 GB DDR3 Ram
- NVIDIA GeForce GT240 (I downgraded my graphic card thinking it could help, I have a GTX 560 OC edition otherwise..)
- Creative Soundblaster 5.1 VX
I thought the problem may be related to CPU spikes so I got DPC Latency Checker and indeed it showed how significant my problem was. I tried to isolate which driver(... Read more

Also this bsod happens quite random not rlly game related, same CDD.DLL .

This driver will frequently cause BSOD's in Asus systems: ASACPI.sys (dated Thu Aug 12 22:52:52 2004) Go to the Asus support website and update your AISuite or PCProbe utilities to the latest Windows 7 version. If you can't find one, post back for further instructions.

Issues with memory. Please run this memory diagnostic:

Finally, please run Driver Verifier to see if it will identify the culprit. Please follow the directions exactly:

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista Startup Repair feature).

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click &q... Read more

I've been working on cleaning a computer at school of spyware and viruses, and I've recently come across a problem. Something is preventing windows from fully loading. I recently deleted some spyware registry keys (because Ad-Aware couldn't remove them) and shut down some system processes, and I found and deleted Pynix.dll, and that is where the problem is. Whenever I restart the computer under the staff login I meet a message saying somethig like "Unable to locate Pynix.dll", and whatever is trying to load is preventing windows from fully loading (going to the desktop and start menu, but I can still access everything from task manager). The upside to this though, everything I got rid of was robbing the computer of memory and there are no more pop-ups...but still. I've also found a registry key that Ad-Aware detected, but I cannot delete it (it is: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE:system\controlset001\enum\root\legacy_tapisrv\0000\control\". And then there is "...\0000control "Active Service"). Grr, any ideas? I'll post a Hijack This log in the forum.

Running a Sony 8x4x32 and did a disc to disc copy of an audio cd which was burned successfully vis a vis the software. However the burned cd (which contains 9 .cda files which it is totally compatible with0 is not playing with volume on any cd rom players either on my system or my home stereo.

All the tracks are listed and the track times progress as if it is playing but no sound, the computer is playing the actual (real) cd no problem but can not get the burned disc to play, do I have a setting wrong. I burned one over the weekend and it was fine.

I am perplexed. Any advice you could offer would be great, thank You

A:Problematic CD Burning

There are not usually any settings if you are using the regular mastering software in copy mode. Other than setting the speed and source and destination drives there is not much you can set. I take it you are using Sony CD Extreme software which is nearly bulletproof.

I would say your best bet is to try a different brand of blank media. It is possible for some of the blanks in a spindle or package to be bad. You might try uninstalling and reinstalling the software if the problem persists with different media.

I donít think it has anything to do with your problem, but Sony has a new update to the software which includes some drivers for Sony burners. It allows them to overburn and write to larger capacity blanks where they couldnít before.

I've made a post about this before, but now it went from a major irritant to debilitating. For some odd reason the task bar at the bottom of the screen shifts to the left and the computer freezes and becomes unusable. Below I've posted what the computer looks like when it's working properly, and what happens when the task bar becomes messed up. I really need this problem fixed. i've look online for a problem such as mine, and I've yet to find one. As you can see the taskbar is completely unusable in this form. This is what it normally looks like.

My company has Word templates for the reports we have to submit, and one of them is a real pain because spellcheck won't work in it. Naturally its the longest (9 pages) and most detailed one.
Someone created it from a letterhead document in which spellcheck was not enabled for the blank portion of the page or something like that. I checked every option I could find, and checked the spellcheck option but noting makes a difference. I am not a Word expert nor do I know how to make templates, so my knowledge of how to correct it is very limited.

What happens if I click on check spelling, it says something like "spelling and grammar check completed. Text marked "do not check spelling and grammar was skipped".

I have repeatedly asked the people in my office to fix it or provide a new one, but so far nothing.

Is there any to change the "text marked do not check spelling and grammar" so that it will check it?

I get so frustrated everytime I have to use that template - I really rely on spellcheck because I am not the greatest typist.

I have Word 2002 on my computer, the version that came with Works 2002, but I previously was using Word 2000 from the Office 2000 Pro. My company is still using Office 97, if that makes a difference.

If anyone can tell me now to correct this template, I would be eternally grateful - and my blood pressure will stay down

A:problematic Word template

Hey Suzi,
This works on normal documents - it should also work on a template.

Select all (Ctrl + A) on an un-filled template and then go to:
Tools, Language, Set Language
Uncheck the box that says "Do not check spelling or grammar".
Re-save and see if it works.

When I put my computer to sleep, and close the lid, every time I lift my case with the laptop in it the lid opens and therefore my laptop resumes from sleep. When I open my case the laptop is so hot the hard disk stops working and I need to turn off.
Sometimes it's more severe than that.

How do I prevent resume from sleep when opening the lid? SO that only clicking on mouse/keyboard will send signal to resume from sleep.

A:Problematic problem with sleep and lid

Always shutdown your computer normally, or put it in hibernation mode when travelling. In sleep-mode the system is still running!! When riding on a bike, in a car or just walking with a suitcase .... switch off computer.

So forget sleep mode in this situation!

But I have never heard about something like "awake from sleep when opening lid". There's a close lid action but not a open lid action afaik

I've been handed a Compaq D51C running XP which will not boot up. No matter if I try safe, last config etc, gets as far as the XP screen, almost loads and restarts. I've tried chkdsk /p/r through recovery, always fails at 25%. Tried fixboot and fixmbr, still no joy.

The problem is, I just need to get the users files off the damn thing. So I have a USB HD adaptor which when I plug into my PC can see the drive but cannot access due to I/O error. I've run PC Inspector File Recovery which can see the whole directory under C: but see's nothing in each folder.

I own a ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, and a Geforce 2 MX 400.

After installing the new Nvidia drivers I noticed that Battlefield 1942 was having a lot of issues with missing textures, invisible walls, floating objects, etc.

When I installed the new ATI drivers (for Windows 2K/XP) it said the drivers were not certified by Microsoft, so I rebooted to check the installation. After rebooting I noticed that a lot of things were slow, such as the start menu loading, moving/resizing windows, etc. I uninstalled the drivers, rebooted, reinstalled an rebooted hoping the problem was that I should have uninstalled the drivers before updating but the same problem occured.

So, I uninstalled the new ATI drivers *again* and reinstalled the old drivers (note: I never updated on the last go round, so I am using the 3rd to newest drivers). Then Windows told me same thing saying the drivers were not certified for Microsoft. Since everything was working perfect before I basically said the heck with it, and since it would not allow me to reinstall the older drivers I did a Windows restore to the day before.

I know a lot of people are having problems with the new Nvidia drivers, but has anyone had problems with the new ATI drivers?

A:New ATI & Nvidia drivers BOTH problematic

I installed the latest 3.9 cat drivers last week. I have been playing Halo, contract JACK demo, command and conquer generals, and links ls 2003. Have not noted any graphical errors or performance issues. I would think that if I was going to see any performance issues it would be on Halo, for an XBOX port, it sure is system demanding.

Hi, I have Avast Free on my Vista Laptop, and a while ago they told me to download and update to their latest version which I promptly did. Ever since then, their scanning doesn't seem to be the same. The difference is that in the old version you could follow the scan progress in real time, meaning you could see exactly which file it was scanning each second, you could see the time duration of the scan in progress, and you could see the number of processed files. In the new version however, the time duration is never available, while the percent and the others are available only sometimes. Even worse than the above is that when I try to scan any CD or DVD, Avast doesn't do anything, the only thing that happens is that the scan screen pops up, and then it just stays on 0%, and I'll wait and wait and nothing happens. That's not right, especially when you keep in mind that the old version would scan a CD and DVD (which usually has a few 100 MB to a few GB on it) in around a minute or 2 if not less.

I've attached a screenshot of the Avast screen supposedly scanning a DVD, but just staying at 0% with no progress. I'm also attaching a screenshot of the Avast version that I have.

Any assistance that I could get would be most appreciated and welcome, since I don't know what to do about this, and am doubting whether the new Avast is even scanning a lot of the things it claims to scan, and whether I should just uninstall it and download a older reli... Read more

Hello everyone!

I just got a Buffalo Linkstation NAS, which has user/group security features. I have set up a dynamic DNS and routed port 445 to the correct LAN IP. Some shares on the NAS are protected by username/password, some are not.

All cases below refer to the the SMB protocol.

1. When using the LAN IP to connect to the device, all connections succeed.

2. When using the WAN IP or dynamic DNS to connect, all connections to non-protected shares succeed.

3. When using the WAN IP or dynamic DNS to connect, connections to protected shares fail in Windows XP and Mac OS 10.4, and succeed Mac OS 10.5.

Any troubleshooting ideas? Thanks!

A:remote SMB access problematic

There might be other ports in use for the protected shares for authentication. I would download Wireshark (freeware packet sniffer) and install it on a PC. Then do a packet sniff while you establish a connection to the NAS and see which ports are being used to mount up a secure share.

As an aside, I would highly caution against exposing your NAS to the internet this way. You're essentially giving anyone access on the internet to your NAS and your only security is how well the NAS is set up to defend against unauthorized access.

I've recently upgraded my pc hardware.I changed motherboard, graphic card and memories.Since then I cannot play a game anymore.I can do almost everything but when I try to play a game some times the pc shuts down or even in the introduction clip of the game!
I searched the net and I found and downloaded 3DMark06.I run it and immediately after 30-40 seconds my pc shut down.I run 2-3 more times and once it didn't shut down but it rebooted. So a minidump file was created.I have done a clean installation (XP PRO SP3) in another partition and I run the test again.Same things happened.I run it 2 or 3 times again and once it rebooted so another minidumpfile was created.I have the most recent drivers of the gpu installed.
I've already run a Prime95 (32bit) - 25.11 test as well for 8 hours and 40 min. to exclude that there is a problem with the cpu, the memories and/or the mobo.My memories are also tested with memtest and everything is ok.
Is the problem the gpu for sure or could it be something else? What else can I do to be 100% sure that the gpu is the problem?

Hey there, would like to start by saying thanks for the help in advance. Here's the situation:

My laptop (running on Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2) recently became infected with the 'Vista Home Security' malware. Needless to say I was unable to do anything booting up normally, so I tried to start up in safe mode. However, starting up in safe mode did nothing to stop the malware, so I had to use my girlfriend's computer to download rkill and Malwarebyte's Antimalware. The first time I ran rkill and did a quickscan with Malwarebyte's it captured the malware and I was able to start up normally, however my virus protection (webroot antivirus with spysweeper) kept getting turned off and I had to turn it on normally. After a few more scans with malwarebytes I removed the same viruses again, and since scans come up clean. Since then I've become aware that my computer probably became infected because I've neglected to update many of the programs on my computer for a long time.

Since then I've been running updates for everything, but the problem is that my computer takes forever to start up, and freezes when I'm surfing the internet. The mouse freezes and I cant do anything, and have to wait for about five minutes for task manager to open up. This never happened before I removed the malware. Malwarebyes and webroot haven't turned up anything since but the poor system performance and random freezing leads me to believe there might be something that wasn't picked up when I re... Read more

Is there any way around this stuff with the newest version (8.1.1, I believe)?

Or is it better to install an older version? And if so, where can you *safely* get that from?

Any help is appreciated -- thanks!

Happy Holidays!

I currently have an Acer Aspire T310 with a P4 2.8 and I am trying to upgrade the CPU to a p4 3.4 prescott.

My PC works fine with the 2.8. When i put the 3.4 in I find that it is really difficult to get it to boot at all. My monitor is blank - there are no errors. I have upgraded the PSU to 480W and I have got a better heat sink/fan. Plus I have updated the bios.

I know the CPU works, because on odd occasion it has actually booted up?!

I have looked at the capacitors near the CPU and they look in good nick.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A:Problematic P4 3.4 Prescott Upgrade

My voltage is dropping?!

I thought my new power supply would cut it. Its a 485W Enermax EG465P-VE. I have 2 hard disks and a 6800 GT card (uses a power connector for its fan) and a USB expansion card.

I looks like the 12V supply is dropping. I have found unplugging some USB devices helps a little bit. I have tried switching round the power connecters, but the voltage seems to hover around 11.96v to 12.03v. With everything connected it drops to 11.76v which makes the odds of booting a lot harder. I dont appreciate why the intial startup voltage has to be 12V but later it works fine if it drops below this.

Apart from upgrading the power supply again. Any ideas?

I was on Facebook playing Farmville when my firewall asked for permission for an unknown file (oiu0.*****) to run - I denied it and then updated Malwarebytes and SpyBot - both of which found things and removed them. My computer no longer shows signs of any infection but becomes sluggish - I ran Process XP and it shows svchost.exe as eating up mt CPU - I kill the process and everything returns to normal. Downside is that updates fail.

I've gone to the process in the system32 folder and both scanned it for viruses of malware infections but it comes up clean. I am out of ideas as to what the issue can be, I've reseaqrched replacing the file but there is nothing online so I haven't touched it.

I've shut down system restore and searched the registry for JdiNQyasYS which had been identified as the main file - the registry came up clean.

Early on - thatever this thing is deleted shortcuts in my start menu - did no damage and I've replaced most of the icons. It also set the attribute to every file on my computer to "hidden"; I changed them back without issue.

I am more annoyed than anything but I would like to make sure my computer is clean - the svchost.exe issue continues.

I hope someone can help.

Thank you,

I use a program (downloaded from the internet) which has become a problem.
It has been OK, but when I updated it to the newer version, it made my startup and shutdown, real slow.
I have uninstalled the program and wiped all traces of it.
My PC then ran as fast as new.
Am I allowed, in this Forum, to say the name of the program?

A:Downloaded program is problematic

I'd say so? Would help us to identify any common problems with said program. Maybe when you installed the new version, it added itself to the programs that start on boot. Could be something there.

It BSOD'd on me even while I was running the "BSOD_Windows7_Vista_v2.60_jcgriff2_.exe"

Normally I don't ask for much computer help as I've been working on them for years (In fact I just got out of Advanced MS Server '08 class ) but I never have understood BSODs. Hopefully I can get some info on it here.

Updates are installed weekly. Old HDD was dieing due to bad sectors (S.M.A.R.T kept telling me so) so I replaced it with a bigger HDD after I backed up the old. Then I put in the new, restored it, and expanded the drive to full capacity (which worked flawlessly).

Let it be known the BSODs have been happening on this particular computer for years even with XP.

A:[SOLVED] Problematic BSOD

That is a sure sign hardware is the cause. Since the hard drive was replaced, we can eliminate that, but other causes remain.

I suggest you start out by testing the RAM. See this guide:

Also, run Prime95, to detect CPU, motherboard, RAM, and heat problems:

Run the Blend test, as well as the Small FFTs.

Haven't heard of it but you could have her check in msconfig and if its there then uncheck it and see if anything she instaled stops running. If not then delete it or have her run a scan here .

HelloI am having a terrible time trying to rid my computer of an infection that seizes my browsers, runs my memory down to zero, causes my browsers to crash often, makes my harddrive run like crazy even if I am not doing anything etc etc. When the infection first occured I kept getting this pop up that said I must by ANTISPYWARE 2010 to clean my system because my computer is infected. I then noticed that the infection had turned off my AVG antivirus program. Then came a rash of other pop ups and computer malfunctions. I tried running various malware/virus programs to clean my system, but nothing worked becasue the programs would shut down before they could initialize or finish the clean up. I tried Malwarebytes, Spybot, A2antispyware, Kaspersky etc etc and nothing worked. I tried Spyware Doctor and it detected the rootkits and variuis other malware and cleaned them out...or so I thought. I had the names of the rootkits and malwares, but when Spyware doctor cleaned them out I discarded them thinking everything was fine....IT WASN'T.THe infections and abnormalties returned with a vengence. Hey Hows it going.
So at the moment im running Vista Home Premium on an acer extensa 7620Z notebook.
I have had it roughly a year , and ive allways had problems with the video card / drivers , running certain games etc, ive never really been best with video cards to begin with , so i just figured as much as i didnt have the specs to run them.

So earlier today i was in my BIOS and noticed it said '' 8 mb of video memory '' .. and as far as im concerned that would stand for my video card? correct me if im wrong , and as far as im concerned my computer was i do believe 312 , 315, 350 something like that im not sure..

But i mean if i really did have just 8mb? wouldnt i not be able to even so much as run vista?

Im very confused as far as that goes , because i cant so much as run alot of games either anything past 2004 keeps erroring out saying '' has encountered a problem and needs to restart' everytime.

Its been nothign but a headache for me.
So if you can help me out Thanks much in advance.

A:Problematic Video Card

According to a few sites, you seem to have an Intel GMA X3100, which is an integrated, entry-level, non-gaming graphics adapter.
It doesn't have its own video memory, therefore using the system RAM for its uses. It can use up to 252 MB of RAM. The reason it shows 8 MB in BIOS is propably because it doesn't need to use anymore in BIOS, thus the RAM hasn't been allocated for it.
New games crash because the X3100 is not enough for them. You'll need an actual gaming PC to play games that have certain features and graphics technologies.

My computer boots up very slowly and it is very difficult to use it for the first 10 minutes, till I hear the Windows start sound that is way too late. The Windows 7 login screen comes up and I log in without bigger issues. The desktop shows up with some glitches. What happens afterwards is strange. It would appear that the computer is ready to be used, yet nothing works well. Outlook doesn't start and when it does start it is unable to get any messages. Internet Explorer is unable to connect to any web site (it is able to load the home page which is a photograph stored on my PC). Any pages I try to connect to don't load, don't respond and need to be recovered. After some ten or more minutes I hear the Windows start sound and all the internet connectivity issues vanish momentarily. This sounds appears not every time. To use my computer in the first ten minutes is problematic every time.

My Problem

I have two SATA drives installed in the system a 160GB drive and a 500GB drive. The 160GB drive has windows installed on it and windows boots fine and works perfect. The problem is windows cannot see my 500GB drive, the bios sees the drive and even windows "Disk Management" can see it, although when I right click the drive in "Disk Management" I only get the options to set a new partition, properties or help and in properties the volume properties button is grayed out.

So how can I resolve this?

So I'm trying to clean up my buddy's sisters laptop. He said it was getting blue screen within minutes. I never played around on it, I just put in my windows 7 disc and began trying to wipe it and install a new windows 7.
I tried wiping and formatting the hard drive and throwing windows on there but I think I messed up somewhere. Whether I formated it wrong it was something else, I'm not sure but it wouldn't install windows. When I try to install windows it says it cannot install required files. Make sure all files are available etc. Error code 0x8007045D
When I boot the laptop it says bootmgr is missing. So I think the hard drive needs to be formatted properly and windows 7 installed. How do I go about doing this? I'm guessing I need to open cmd prompt in the I'm windows installation screen and format it through commands.
Can somebody help me out with this?

Frankly, I'm confused.

A February 11th blog posting at The Microsoft Security Response Center regarding problems with a patch issued last week said "We also stopped offering this update through Windows Update as soon as we discovered the restart issues."

This posting has not been updated in the six days since it was written.

The patch in question is known as MS10-015 and as KB977165, depending on the context.

Yesterday at Gregg Keizer also reported that MS10-015 was no longer being issued. He quoted an email message from Jerry Bryant of Microsoft: "Automatic Updates for MS10-015 will remain disabled until our investigation into the restart issues is complete"

A:Has the problematic Windows patch been pulled or not?

What I read today is that MS has "confirmed" that the problem is due entirely to a specific malware infection present on the affected PCs. Thus, their recommendation was to disinfect the PC before applying this KB.

Given their current position on this, it's unlikely that they will be pulling this "patch".

Is there a list of them posted somewhere? After several different searches I'm not finding them online other than KB977165 which causes the BSOD.

A:Which problematic Windows updates should I avoid?

To the best of my knowledge no such list exists. Many times once an update is known to cause problems it is pulled until fixed. Many times MS will never acknowledge the a problem ever happened. Only those who have experienced the problem or those asked to help attempt to fix the problem caused are ever aware of it.Many times the problem update is only a problem for those running a particular make\model of PC, a particular third party program(s), or someone already infected with the exploit that the update\patch is attempting to correct. It is for that reason that I actually run with MS auto-updates off. Unless it is an extremely critical update, released out of cycle, MS only pushes out updates the second Tuesday of every month now.Agreed it can be a bit of a PITA remembering to check but I have found it far easier to remember and check, then if a problem should arise to track down it`s source. The only program on any of my machines set to auto-update is my AV.DISCLAIMER; The above is purely my opinion and my opinion only. Your mileage may vary.

I bought some 32GB and 8GB flash drives from China so that I could sell them here in South Africa.
They are all FAT32, copies of Sandisk Micro, IBM thinkpad, Sony VAIO and some pens.
I am on Windows XP, all the data can be copied and read from the drives, but when I remove the drives and put them back in, some of the data is lost.
If I put multiple folders, only one folders has files which can run, some files become corrupt.
The Sandisk Cruzer Micro is corrupted after I tried formatting it, now it doesnt even wanna format.
Help please?

edit: ALL my other previous working flash drives and my friend's flash drives are in FAT, maybe this is the problem, because these chinese flashes are in FAT32. I cant change format from windows or control panel. any special software?

A:Chinese flash drives very problematic

You can change formats. FAT32 I would think is more widely used for larger drives.

If you didn't buy "Official" Sandisk drives of course they aren't going to be any good. It is widely known that they are fakes, I think you even acknowledged that by saying they were Chinese. That is the reason they were cheap to buy, they are DESIGNED to scam people into buying them thinking they are getting a good deal.

Your story is analogous to buying a cammed version of a new movie rather than paying to see it in theater and then complaining the picture and sound quality are bad.

Hi all,

Like many others, my computer has been afflicted with Winantivirus Pro 2006 and other similar unwanted popups claiming that I have all these problems with my computer. I've probably noticed about 10 different popups, but I'm guessing they're all related and/or affiliated. The problem has gotten worse recently and I'd like to do something about it, if possible.

I did a search, but my understanding is that every case is unique. So I figured I'd post here and hope some kind soul will tell me what to do...

I have a Windows XP Professional installation. When I started my PC the following message appeared:

I recently got Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 Extended and installed it in my Windows 8 PC. First of all, here are my specs (Please refer to the 'System spec' section below the thread for more information) ;
OS - Windows 8Processor - Intel Core i7-3770 (@ 3.40 GHz)GPU - NVidia GeForce GT 640 4.00 GBMonitors - 2x (Dual) Acer S231HL 1080p, Full HD Monitors.
So after I installed Photoshop and launched it, it said that there were problems with both of my monitors. I ignored that (there was nothing else to do) and now when I open a new project (Ctrl+N) in Photoshop with;
Canvas Size - 1024x768 (This doesn't actually matter because the problem repeats in other sizes too)16 bit color. Background color - white.
The white background is rather link an off white - peach color. I did not do anything to Photoshop nor did I change the PC settings.

Screenshot of the canvas configurations;
Screenshot of the 'white' canvas;
Please note that the WHITE color can be seen properly in any other application. The color tint of my monitor is set to 'Cool' and not 'Warm'.

Please help me with this issue.
Thank you very much...

Hi folks,

Strange new issue just popped up, and my guess is that it has to do with one HDD, but a bit of context first:

I have Win7 on a SSD / I have 4x HDD's for storage - 2 of these have digital film files (mostly MKV or AVI). One drive is generally for new downloads of all files, many of which are films, and the other is the archive. Everything in the archive is backed up onto external HDD's, and those are used to hook up to the TV in the living room. This system has been in place for quite a while.

Two days ago, I downloaded a few new files, and was informed they were corrupt during unpacking (start, middle or end of unpacking). Upon playing any video file, it shows moments of high pixelation, like you occasionally get when there's a data pinchpoint somewhere. Well these ones are happening almost half the time, like this:

At first I thought I had some bad luck with downloads. But I noticed that the rest of the files on this HDD do the same thing, and some of them have been on there for well over a year.

So I moved one to the other media drive... looks exactly the same. Tried it with 3 files, same results. Played other media files from the other drive - no problems with those at all.

I moved some packed files over to the other drive and upacked them there - corrupted. I downloaded the same files to the other drive and upacked them and they're fine. Moved that same new file to the Downloads drive, and it's pixelated.... Read more

For years I have been using Windows Search/Find feature to find and delete files--until XP. Mainly, I use it to clean out an entire hard disk of certain file types.

What has happend to the Search feature in XP? First, it doesn't always find files that are confirmed in Windows Explorer to be right where I'm looking and confirmed to be of the file specification I'm looking for.

And, to make matters worse, I cannot delete files from the Search window as I used to when it does find them. I click Edit> Select All then press the delete button and I get the following error:
Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk.
However, if I go into the search window and select files only in single folders at a time, I can delete them just fine; but, this is time-consuming and not the way it has ever worked in any previous version of Windows.

This problem is not just my own XP machine. I am finding this exact problem on every XP (only XP) machine I've tried it on, which is up to a count of about eight now. And it doesn't matter if I'm on a FAT-32 or NTFS partition.

I have been having intermittent problems with WIN 7 freezes in both 32 and 64 bit. Two to four minute freezes and then it recovers. This happens in various programs and browsers. Also "cold start" was too long 3-4 minutes whether in safe mode or not. Primary HD is WD Velociraptor 150GB,SATA 10K rpm. Formatted and re-installed WIN several times. Problem continued even when no other S/W or devices were installed. WIN diagnostic/operation test showed long boot time from cold start. Then installed WIN 7 64 bit on another HD and all the problems vanished. I took the problematic HD to the representative who tested the HD with WD diagnostics since it was still under warranty, but all of there tests were successfull. Their conclusion is that there is nothing wrong with the HD.

Any thoughts or recommendations on this situation?

Any help is appreciated.

A:Suspect problematic hard drive

Try SeaTools and the Long DST, that may not be able to run because it isn't a Seagate drive. If that is the case try Long Generic.

Also, and this is just a shot in the dark, does the drive have a jumper on it that you can force legacy SATA mode? If so, it might be worth flipping it over to legacy and see if the problems persist.

Thirdly, are your chipset drivers current?

My D-Link DIR-615 Wireless N Router has speed issues, connectivity issues, and is blocking things for no good reason. Sometimes the speed fluctuates between normal (about 45KBps) and very slow (2KBps). This happens with a wired or wireless connection, usually slows down after about half an hour, and I have to reboot to fix it. I do not have this problem connecting directly to the modem. My connectivity issues occur when I try to use my PS3 on the wireless network. When I try to use the Internet browser it reports that a network error has occurred. Most other PS3 online features work somewhat okay, but I sometimes have to reboot to get them to work. When I try to download software for [email protected] on my PS3, after about 10-25% through, the routers internet (or globe) icon turns red, which I assume means it is blocking something, and my PS3 shows an error message stating that the software could not be downloaded due to an error (81 is the only two numbers I remember). I have satellite internet connection with a Telesat Ka-band modem and satellite with connection speed at 512Kbps. On my Desktop PC I run Windows XP Home w/SP2, and on laptop, Windows XP Pro w/SP2.

A:Solved: My D-Link DIR-615 wireless N router is really problematic.

A couple of things to try.
Download and install the latest firmware. Many times, issues with new products are resolved by a firmware upgrade.
Reset to factory defaults and reconfigure.
Call D-Link and get a warranty replacement.

Considering the number of threads out there that actually deal with freezing and or restarts on Windows 7 you'd figured I would find the problem but unfortunately no.

So the ease of it is simple, whenever my computer is useing a heavily intense application involing the internet my system will;
A) Hard Freeze no mouse, keyboard or computer response or
B) Randomly Restart without any notification.

checking my event logs I came to see this event periodically: Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0

This issue happens when I run Prime95, use any online game such as AION or DemiGod, Supreme Commander, Command and Conquer ext. or supriseingly viewing flash intensive websites such as you tube although they aren't as common. I've tried reinstalling, no such luck there. I've tried different configs, i.e. no RAID or stock settings taking out ram replacing all the components in my computer and I keep getting the same exact problem involving the internet and or internet intensive programs.

I've uploaded my system info, I have had the computer OC'd but even encountered the problems at stock settings. I've left it in the BIOS to see if it is a hardware error for 24 hours and nothing seemed to go wrong, it worked fine and booted normally. I've turned off services and such and have all the updated drivers for my equipment but the problem still remains. If anyone has any idea then I ask for help.

I hope someone can understand this. My problem..
I use Alcohol 120% and have the remains of a virtual drive left over on my PC, Device Manager recognises it as plug and play bios extension with a configuration problem. Driver details as follows.. Device Instance Id is ROOT\SYSTEM\0003, Hardware Ids is root\a348bus and Service is a348bus. I can't find it to save my life and desperately want to get rid of it as on startup it always recognises new hardware. I have looked in the drivers folders etc. I do have another valid driver/extension for an Alcohol virtual drive though, listed as vax347b by the way. Any help is appreciated.

my question is if anybody knwon on function in HP switches that recognize over booking traffic and automatic disable the bombed port?
now we have spening tree and brodcaste limit on every switch but its not enough, the big traffic kill the network until we disable the problematic port and igonre the bombing server.

Hi all,

I have recently formatted my pc due to a virus, however my foresight isn't all that good and i didn't think about how i was going to get my hardware drivers back, you see my computer was given to me as a present by a computer programmer (who i no longer see) who built the pc himself, which is why there are no documents or backup / driver discs, only the xp disc was provided.

so now i have 18 (was 20 but i managed to find 2 of the drivers i needed online, woohoo!) 18 drivers missing or out-of-date. i downloaded belarc advisor to find out the makes and models of my hardware in the hope that it would be as easy as visiting the makes website and retrieving the drivers from there... i was horribly mistaken.

i now have driver detective which tells me exactly which drivers are missing or out-of-date, but i still have no idea how to get them all back. but one things for sure and that's that i won't be formatting my pc again any time soon!

for 2 days now ive been working on this problem with no result, so i havent just taken the easy way out and come straight here, and to be quite frank this problem is absolutly doing my head in now!

The computer still runs fine just extremely slowly and playing games on it is an absolute no-go! like counter-strike source one of the most unrequiring spec games in history is running at an average of about 7-9 fps now which not only is extremely frustrating but frankly unplayable!

Hello, I'm far from computer savvy and have a problem, I cannot do a search using any famous search engines (Google, Yahoo, Ask, and Bing). Of course Google is my search engine of choice and I am feeling like someone has cut of my right arm, because it's not working. I am using FF3.5.1 as my main browser, but search doesn't work in IE8 or Safari4.0.2 either. Last night I ran through a complete scan of the latest Spybot and Malwarebytes. Spybot did nothing to improve my situation and Malwarebytes appeared to fix the problem at least for several hours and then the PC returned to the same state.

DDR.scr returned no log files, but I was able to run a hijackthis and malewarebyte log files. See attached log file.

Hi guys,

I've just popped open my Sony Vaio NR21J/S laptop to put a new hard drive inside and my setup looks like this (sorry in advance for the bad quality images):

(IDE 2.5" 40gb Hard Drive)

I haven't fitted a hard drive before but have done a lot of research online before I finally gave in. The problem is my setup doesn't seem to look like anyone elses. I have the caddy and my new hard drive ready to go, but what is the circuit board piece for?

It slots nicely into the IDE slot on the mother board but it doesn't fit on the hard drive properly. As far as I knew it was a case of putting the new hard drive in the caddy, fastening it all and lining it up and sliding it in the IDE slot, but it won't fit which leads me to believe the circuit board must play a serious part (no way Sherlock, I know)

If anyone could shed some light on exactly how I install this I'll be grateful.

A:Installing new hard drive in Sony Vaio problematic!

The circuit board came with the new drive? If so that's odd. Where did you get this drive from? Why only a 40GB? But from the specs it would appear the hard drive interface is SATA not PATA(IDE), maybe they expect you to remove the PATA circuit board and use the SATA circuit board with the hard drive, but there's odd that they'd do that.

Also please do not use profanity, this is a family oriented oriented forum. I've edited your post.

Hey, here is my simple but aggravating problem. I backed up some of my DVD's from my collection. I used Sony DVD-R's. When I use DvdInfoPro the ID shows as SONY16D1. I burned my DVD's fine, without problems, (With A Lite-On LH-20A1H with latest firmware), but then when I wanted to watch it on my computer I couldn't get it to play back, windows media player just freezes after a few seconds into the intro as does any other media player I use. I put it into my Samsung Writemaster SH-S203B (with latest firmware as well) and it won't even show anything, it just freezes and I have to force quit windows media player. But when I take the burned dvd-r to my phillips DVD player it plays fine. So I am thinking that these DVD's are crap because I have many other blank DVD media in which I have backed up DVD's including Memorex, Verbatim, and even a couple off-brand no name DVD's and they all worked no problem in my burner. I thought it was the firmware, but I uprgraded both drives firmware and same problem. Is it just crappy DVD's, or maybe something else? I read that the SONY21D sucks, so I wonder if the 16 is not far off. I have so far backed up 6 of my Home DVD collection DVD's, and 3 work in my burner, and 3 do not. I am ready to bring them back and complain, and then come away with Maxell DVD+R's.

Any info would help ladies and gents.

Well I was having the same problem with my Sony DVD-R's.....and I have a Sony DRX-83OU DVD burner. When I tried to burn a DVD the first 2 times it worked but the next 10 tries were unsuccessful and I wanted to know why so I looked on the internet and found out that the Sony DVD-R's are not compatible with the Sony dvd burner....go figure!!!! Well I had to switch to Verbatim and they work perfectly. Maybe Sony does have some crappy dvd's!!! Hope that helps!!

Greetings,First off, thanks for any assistance you can provide. The situation has been worse before I make this post, but I've managed to kill most of the infection through other help sites. The problem that has been getting me is what came with the malware- a rootkit, as far as I can tell. MBAM and AVG both don't seem to detect any problems, but GMER detects problems with atapi.sys. I've already tried to fix it by using recovery console and a spare copy of atapi.sys, but as far as I can tell, it hasn't done a thing. The source of the original infection was ave.exe. As far as I can tell, it's been taken care of, but the rootkit might be preventing me from cleaning up any remnants.Symptoms (from what I've experienced already) are redirects from google, random new tabs leading to ad sites when firefox is up, and iexplorer occasionally popping up by itself (hasn't happened lately, though). In the beginning of this fiasco, pages have been closing by themselves for no foreseeable reason. Before that, due to the remnants of a previous infection, my address bar in explorer windows will reset after typing for a couple seconds and my computer won't go into standby or hibernate.Combofix had been run to clear the original infection, and when I discovered the rootkit and replaced atapi.sys with a clean copy, I ran it again and it deleted some stuff, but the symptoms persist. I'll attach the last log I got from it with my other stuff, if it helps. TDSS K... Read more
