hp 2000 notebook Hard Drive DST short failure, Reinstall?

Q: hp 2000 notebook Hard Drive DST short failure, Reinstall?

So i got this hp 2000 notebook pre installed win 8 from a friend. I did some HP tests and shows HD short DST Failure.
I was able to refresh the pc and it does run per sa but constant always getting dst failures. So i assume its dying. I bought a new hard drive for the unit. Now if i put it in, will windows setup pull the product key from the bios? I put windows 8 on a usb key. Can anyone guide me through the process?

A: hp 2000 notebook Hard Drive DST short failure, Reinstall?

Hi, if the PC came originally with Windows 8 preinstalled the product key is embedded in the BIOS so it would be detected automatically. Here is a great tutorial how to install Windows 8 Clean Install - Windows 8.

Good luck, werty

Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

A:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

HP diagnostics returned error code 9lhvwc-5rg85u-mfh15f-60t903 during a hard drive short self test this evening. Prior to the test, the disk drive was working very slowly, as if it had trouble reading data. I am able to log in with windows in it's normal mode, but the drive performs poorly. Safe mode is better. I own an HP dv7-6175us with serial number 5ch134ijx7.

A:Hard Drive failure during short test

I suspect it's an issue with the header, because the disk drive was also clicking, and it was the click you hear when the accelerometer halts the hard drive. I suspect it's impact/shock damage. It was repeatedly clicking for about 5 time before I shut it down manually.

An issue I had resolved a few months ago has begun occuring again, wherein the laptop has difficulty loading things when started up and soon after crashes and has to be restarted. I assume this means the hard drive has failed again and so I have no doubts about how to resolve this, but I am posting this query to ask: Why? Why has a laptop I have had for not even a year at this point already had the same problem occur twice, even with replacing the part that broke the first time? I'm willing to assume it's something to do with excessive use as I will admit it is switched for a good part of most days, often for several hours as I play games on Steam on it. I do not currently plan to have the hard drive replaced again as this is clearly an issue that is going to keep occuring the way things are and so I may as well get a PC that won't break every time a gust of wind hits it. Any information on why this is occuring and how it could potentially be prevented in the future is appreciated , particularly if it provides a solution that doesn't involve paying an extortionate amount of money.

A:Hard Drive short DTS check failure code meaning?

Hi, The  error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the boot issue you describe. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know - include the full Model No. and Product No. of your 15 series notebook - see Here for a further explanation. Regards, DP-K

A:Hard Drive Failure. Need windows 8 to reinstall OS

A "Hard Drive DST Check" error typically indicates that the hard drive has failed or is about to fail and will need to replaced. After replacing the hard drive, please use the HP Recovery Media you previously created to return the computer to a factory like state. If you didn't create your HP Recovery Media when you first setup your computer, please contact official HP support in your region / country, via the HP Worldwide Support Portal, to see if HP Recovery Media is available for your computer. As for the data on the failing drive, remove it and place it in USB 2.5" SATA enclosure and connect it to a working computer. If the drive is still accessible, you may be able to copy your work to another computer. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Please click the White KUDOS "Thumbs Up" to show your appreciation

Hi. I don't know much about Windows 8 so I am looking for some help in this matter. Here's the situation...

A friend of mine has a Acer laptop running Windows 8. When it boots up there's a message that says "No Bootable Device Found." I tested his hard drive and it's a complete failure. I even took it out and hooked it up to a dock to try and view and recover files and it's not readable at all. Below are my questions about it which I hope you can help me with...

1. I know he needs to purchase a new hard drive. 2. He never made recovery media so I guess he must order recovery media from Acer or is there another way around this? Is there a Windows 8 iso for download that I can use to reinstall his OS? What about a OS product code? How do I know what his registration code is? Is it in the BIOS? How can I find it? Any and all help with this is greatly appreciated as I am a novice with Windows 8. Thank you!

Hi all,
I am relatively new to this forum, but I need some help figuring out this issue with my PC. In short, I cannot reinstall either Windows 8 or 7 from a new disk. I can't do the Windows 8 refresh, nor can I do the restore. I have looked at other forums, and nothing has seemed to work. Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated.

If you'd like to know what exactly has happened, I will outline my story.
1. Using the Windows Upgrade Assistant, I upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7 a month ago.
2. My performance on various programs diminished.
3. In an attempt to solve the situation, I tried to reinstall Windows from the Reinstall CD. I was able to get to the point where is asked for a partition to install on, but it said no partitions were available.
4. I tried the Windows Refresh, and Reset tool. That failed because it asked for install media, and said the drive was locked. That is where I am now
NOTE: I can still boot up into Windows 8 even though the reinstall disk claims that the disk is locked.

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!

A:Windows 8 Failure to Reinstall/Hard Drive Locked

If you have a spare 2.5" HDD or SSD just lying around what you could do is replace the one in the Laptop then using your install disk reinstall whatever OS you want (win 7 or 8). . . Good luck

Hi,
I have a DELL XPS8500 desktop and I have this error code: 2000-0142. I know it means that the HD needs to be replaced. When I chose to boot in partition, I do see the C disk so I'm still confident to be able to recover personal datas at some point but that the Windows booting partition is damaged....
I don't have any recovery nor Windows hardcopy but went from Windows 7 to 10 a few months ago.
I downloaded the Windows Media to create a Windows.ISO on a DVD or USB drive.
I tried to boot from the DVD but it failed to reactivate and reinstalled Windows as I guess the Internal HD is really screwed.
My questions:
- If I install a new HD, should it be straight foward to reinstalled Window by booting from the media DVD?
- Could my damage HD could be access as a ''standard drive after'' as I guess that it may be hopefully just the Windows partition that is damaged.......
Does Dell can supply a Recovery with my Service tag and Express service code?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

A:HARD DRIVE FAILURE ERROR CODE 2000-0142

If you've already activated 10 on the system, you can reinstall it at any time.  You'll need the same version (10 or 10 Pro) you had - you can get the ISO from Microsoft and put it on a flash drive to do the installation.  Once 10 is activated, you have a digital entitlement on the system that allows reinstallation.
It is better to remove the faulty drive from the system and reconnect it once you have WIndows reloaded - to try and copy the data.

I went to reinstall windows 2000 because I thought it would fix some problems I was having (not too serious). When the reinstall was almost done and in the registering components state, the progress froze. I waited a long time and it wasn't moving, so i manually rebooted the machine. Now when i restart I get an error that SYSTEM.SAV is missing or corrupt. I can boot from my other hard drive and look at the files and i can see the SYSTEM and SYSTEM.SAV files, and they are the same size. What should I do??
All help appreciated.

If you've verified that all devices are plugged in to power and the correct cable (ie floppy cable for floppy and ide/sata for HD), then it's possible that the power supply failing could have damaged the circuitry on the drives.

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. Kyle, welcome to the forum. This error message is telling you that your hard drive has failed.  Your only option is to replace it.  You can test it further using the SMART test from the BIOS.  When you replace it you should buy one the same size or larger.  If you didn't backup your personal data, you will not be able to retreive it.  You should begin doing this immediately after you replace the drive. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Hello there! My computer recently started rebooting (BSOD) nonstop after turning it on, and it won't even go into Safe Mode. After running a system quick check, I received a message stating Hard Drive Short DST: Failed. With this message, I assume I need to replace my hard drive. I'm not sure where the best place to look for a new laptop hard drive is and how to find one on the HP store. Recovering potentially lost data is also a concern. What's the best way to go about replacing the drive and attempting to recover what was on it?

A:HP envy dv6 Hard Drive Short DST: Failed

You can use any manufacturer's hard drive. HP uses Toshiba, Seagate, etc in their laptops-they do not make their own. Western Digital is a popular replacement. Best Buy, Staples even Wal Mart carries hard drives. Just be sure to get a 2.5 " hard drive for laptops not a 3.5" desktop hard drive.Example:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8516564&CatId=1277 As to recovering files you may be able to do that by installing the old hard drive into a usb enclosure then plug it into usb port of a working machine. If the hard drive has any life left in it you should be able to browse it and copy files over to hard drive of host machne.Example:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3195233&CatId=2781

Hi, I'm new to the forums so I hope this is the right place to post this But anyways, I basically dropped my HP 15 Notebook (15-f305dx) and now it won't boot. When I turn it on, it goes to the loading screen for a few seconds and then goes to a blank, black screen, and after a long while, a blue screen that has an 'Unmountable Boot Volume' error . Sometimes it starts and says 'Preparing Automatc Repair' but only for a few seconds again, then it goes back to the black screen and the same error. I saw some tutorials but it involved me getting a bootable CD or USB drive and I tried that and it still won't work. It just makes the loading screen stay on a little longer then goes back to the error. So I ran a System Quick Check and it failed the Hard Drive Short DST check. I don't know what any of this means. do I need a new laptop?

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check Fail?

It appears the impact of dropping your computer damaged the hard drive. The Hard Drive Short  DST Check Fail error is an indication that the hard drive has failed or is about to fail. You will need to replace the hard drive with a like unit and use your HP Recovery Media to return the computer to a factory like state. If you didn't create your HP Recovery Media when you first setup your computer, you will have to purchase this media from HP. Please see USB - Windows 10 64b Recovery Kit to order the media or contact HP Customer Support to purchase the medai, If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Please click the White KUDOS "Thumbs Up" to show your appreciation

Hi I been using my laptop as usual today and all of a sudden a notification popped up saying hard drive failure imminent. I restarted the laptop, pressed f2 and ran a system test. Everything in the test passes expect from the Hard drive short dst check, which failed.Failure ID: 0SG2J1-7K289U-XD7WLJ-60VW03I'm not sure why this has occurred. I regular run virus scans and defrag the hard drive. The hard drive is 1TB and around 100GB is used. The laptop is only 2 years old and ran out of warranty around April/May (typical). I don't have any recovery disc or back ups, is the laptop now unusable? I try to boot up but the laptop either freezes on login or on desktop. I have all my uni work, including my dissertation report on there, please help.ThanksDale

Hi @Himanshu9001, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion Notebook and getting the start up error message failure ID. This error is DST Short Test Failure code. What that means is your Hard drive could be failing. I recommend  the first thing you should do is back-up all your personal files etc as soon as you can. Wondering if maybe reseating the Hard Drive would help. After you reseat it I would run the Hardware Diagnostics again. Please get back to me how this goes. If this post helps you to resolve the issue you can click the Thumbs up icon to show gratitude! Thanks.

I know my hard drive is failing. I cannot boot my computer tried every method. It's in the automatic repair loop. I'm going to have to send it in I'm pretty sure of it. However I was able to access the notepad through the command prompt and noticed that I can still see my files in different folders. Is there a way for me to back up my files? Is there a way I can access a program from command prompt and transfer files? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Bought this Pavilion 17t in December of 2014.  Upgraded to Windows 10 about 6 months ago.  Just last week the laptop got stuck in an automatic repair loop. I tried a hard reboot and that didn't work.  I ran the diagnostics test and got a Hard Drive Short DST check Failed.  Failure ID Q4JF9G-7G189F-MFPV7A-60SU03  Product ID J7B57AV.   Does this mean my hard drive is failing after such a short time?  Is there any solution other than an expensive repair?

A:HP Pavilion 17t Hard Drive Short DST failed

Yes unfortunately it means the hard drive must be replaced. If you are willing to do it yourself, hard drives are probably not as expensive as you fear. We would need your precise model number to provide the correct manual and instructions and likely a video. Since you had Windows 10 installed and activated you can use media downloaded for free direct from Microsoft.

Your hard drive must be replaced. Post back if you want specific help with that. On  your model it is manageable for the end user to do, although not real easy. Are you under warranty? Manual see p. 46.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

A:hard drive short DST check failed

Stop using the laptop. Replace the hard drive with a new one. Get a SATA to usb adapter to connect the old drive (which you will remove) to another computer to try to salvage data. There is a good chance data is still recoverable this way.  See p. 49 of the Manual: Manual If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Hey all I'm technologically challenged and this is my first time posting on the forum so lemme know if I miss anything....Like the subject says my notebook was freezing and running slowly I didn't know what was happening but long story short I can't get past the boot up screen anymore with HP logo and I ran diagnostic and got hard drive short and long dst failed. I'm pretty frustrated cause my laptop is less than 2 yrs old and my warranty expired how can I replace the damaged hard drive and what exactly should I buy? Also will my files be lost?

A:Hard drive long and short dst fail

A retail laptop/mobile 2.5" SATA hard drive can be used.Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Sorry to say files also die with a hard drive. Best practice with any computer is an external USB hard drive to back up files.

tbh, I'm not sure if I'm running windows 10 64 or 32, I'm using the default it shipped with So, what happened was first my computer would boot up fine, but it would "lock up" occasionally. I would be watching a video, click to a different tab, stuff like that, and everything would become unresponsive and freeze (didn't just happen to my browser, would happen even with my search bar). Restarting and giving it a moment would fix this problem, but it got to the point it happened 20 or 30 minutes after start up. I decided to do a reset, chose to not save my files (didn't do a 100% wipe though) because there's nothing critically important, and I thought it could be a virus. Did the wipe, got an error a good bit in that the wipe couldn't be done (I do not remember the exact wording). Tried again, same thing. It directed me to some options, chose the launch windows 10 normally one, just to see if I was still having problems. Did this, and what would happen is computer would boot up, HP logo, cycle back to computer boot up, HP logo, it was in a loop. Waited a good hour and a half to two hours, would not stop. Turned computer off manually and on a few times, same problem. Turned computer off then on, f2, system quick test, and I got the error in the title FAILURE ID: QBS97X-82L863-XD7WMA-60WD03PRODUCT ID: P1A95UA#ABA

Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. As your notebook shipped with Windows 10, it is probably still under warranty, so contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-K

Hi,

I recently aquired a new molex-sata adapter for adding a second HDD to my computer, but when I plugged it in and turned the PC on, it won't power up. Without either hard drive plugged into the power supply, the PC will start but obviously go no further, but with either hard drive plugged in the computer simply won't start.

I've tried with three molex-sata adapters now and none of them will make it work, so I was wondering if it is likely that the new adapter has ruined my hard drive? If not then any tips for fixing it?

Thanks very much

I wanted to convert my Sony Vaio back to Windows 7 after updating to Windows 8 last year. I tried using the recovery disks that I created when I got the laptop. It told me that I couldn't reinstall. So after trying multiple things, I finally decided to wipe out the entire hard drive thinking that it would automatically reinstall Windows 7 64 bit. Now when I try to reinstall, it can't find a drive to install it to and all I have is a black screen now telling me Operating System Not Found....please help so that I can reinstall Windows 7 64 bit on my Sony Vaio VPCCW21FX with a 500 GB SATA Hard drive and 6 GBs of RAM.

I'm thinking I may need to create a partition so that when I put the recovery DVD in to reinstall Windows, it has a drive to install the software onto. I don't know how to create a partition or if that will solve my issue. My laptop is now worthless. Also, I can't access BIOS. I completely erased the entire hard disk.

A:Erased hard drive to reinstall Win 7 but now won't reinstall

Jim depends on how you set the wipe up and how you formated it mate look at this and if you have access to another machine do it.
If the drive is wiped clean then follow this it says for SSD's but will also work on spinners

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.  Yes, the files can most likely still be retrieved.  To do this, you would need to take the hard drive out of the notebook and connect it directly to a desktop computer or insert it into an external hard drive dock/cradle and browse to the files you need.  If you feel this is too difficult then you could take it to a local computer repair store and they'll be able to do this for you (for their fee). Once you've got the old drive out, you can have another put in and recover the operating system using the HP Recovery Media and it'll put the notebook back into the same condition as it came out of the box.

I am investigating a possible failure with my "C" drive which has WIN7 loaded on it.

My question is regarding license issues with my getting a new hard drive and doing a new install of WIN7. Do I have to call Microsoft and explain the issue and get some sort of permission or will WIN7 install and process as a properly licensed version?

A:Drive Failure and WIN7 Reinstall

What kind of license are you using? Retail licenses (the one you buy from a store, comes in a box) and System builder licenses get tied to original hardware and may deactivate if you change hardware frequently. If you havent changed hardware around and just plan to swap the hard disk, online activation should go without a hitch. If it doesnt, a phone activation may be required.

Hard drive error code 2000-0146
Dell Inspiron 1525 computer. Screen goes black after Dell logo is shown. Ran diagnostics available when F12 key pressed when Dell Logo appeared. Two error codes came up during diagnostics. 2000-0142 and 2000-0146 "Self test log shows previous errors" Co-incidentally an email had been received with subject line "I enjoyed you in secret video" Others have had problems after this email, yet I can't find any reference to it on the net. It may only be co-incidence.
I tried booting from the installation disk. Screen showed "files loading" bar then went to the next screen with the green progress bar for a few seconds, then black and soon the hard drive ceased any activity. After a few attempts now the boot from the DVD just grinds away. There is hard drive activity but no progress.
I'm thinking bad hard drive but it doesn't seem reasonable. It is only a few months old. Ccleaner is used regularly and there hasn't been any lead up problems.

The other day I was workigna t ym computer, when it started to show tell tale signs of HDD failure, and then would not boot, could hear thrashing and clicking etc when trying to read it.

I was pretty annoyed about that but I thought oh well its all backed up just need a new HDD.

So got a new one ordered all specs reccommended by the computer manufacturer, installed by a preofessional too.

*** was going well, new OS flying along nicely so I went to my external HDD to transfer some data. Uppon trying to open my 1.5tb external HDD I realise windows cannot read it, although it is shown in "device manager" as a usb sotrage device. My other lapotop wont read it, nor a mac, nor linux even with force boot command.

I then go to my emergency backup 320gb hard drive with a small fraction of my important stuff on it. this 320gb hard drive WAS readable when I installed my new HDD with OS on it, but I went to the 1.5tb first as it had more on. But now even the 320 GB hard drive cannot be read, by a selection of computers.

I then plugged by 8GB Nokia N95 in and now it cannot even be read.

Complete disaster.

I have tried chkdsk, macs reading all drives, linux force boot commands.

I am quite scared that my new 500gb OS hard drive will fail soon too but I dont know what is causing this please any help much appreciated.

Regards

Steve

A:Hard Drive failure + External HDD Failure Similtaneously

What OS?
Look in Event Viewer/System for any red marks that may provide clues.
I understand the initial drive failure. but the subsequent failures suggest a major problem with the computer itself. Power supply, memory IDE controller, motherboard?
A virus could do this. There may be some rogue file on the external drive.

Your hard drive is probably failing. I would get your important data off it as soon as possible. After your important data is off download Seatools for Windows and do a diagnostic to confirm the hard drive failure.

My laptop will not boot, the screen comes on and the dell logo is there and the lights flash around the like it's trying to boot and then it goes dark and that's it.  When I check the setup it can find the hard drive, it lists it by the HDD.  When I run diagnostics it fails with short test unsuccessful.  I have reseated the hard drive and tried to reboot,  but it is not working.  I'd like to run chkdsk /r from the command console like I saw in one of the possible solutions, but I don't know how to get to the command console.  I'm thinking I need a new hard drive but I would like to try everything to save this one first.

Hey guys and gals. I was trying to backup some files (yet another issue). My external hard drive enclosure appears to be malfunctioning. Or it could be the SATA drive itself. You see when I try to turn it on the computer can't read it. Perhaps it was a power surge or something IDK. Does anybody have any suggestions or recommendations?

Tomorrow I'll try to take the computer apart and test the drive itself; I have a limited number of SATA interfaces on my motherboard and one of them is connected to the OS HD. I hope it is o.k., there are some recent backups I don't want to lose. Would be a pain to ask for those last few documents at work and rescan them. Guess I am going to need 4 external backups.

It is a Manhattan USB / EATA Enclosure 3.5 (large internal HD). Model Number unknown.

I knew I should have invested in 'more' storage . Well, my weekly backup was today even though I normally backup files right after.

So, I had gotten up this morning and was on my computer fine and dandy for a couple of hours and left for class at around 1:30 PM. When I return at around 4, I turn on my monitor and there's a blinking underscore on the top right of my screen. I went ahead and made a startup repair disc for Windows 7, but it could not find anything wrong with the system. I then went into the ACER factory settings utility on the same disc and both options:

> Completely Restore System to Factory Defaults
Restore your PC to factory default status. All data on C: drive will be deleted.

> Restore Operating System and Retain User Data
Restore only the operating system of your PC to the factory defaults. Files from your user accounts will be transferred to C:\Backup. This option will not remove persistent viruses or malware.

Are grayed out. I assumed that this could only be because it wasn't detecting my hard drive? I went into the setup menu in the BIOS, and I see:

> IDE Primary Master [Not Detected]
> IDE Primary Slave [Not Detected]
> SATA7 [Not Detected]
> SATA8 [Not Detected]

However, when I start up the computer it says it's automatically detecting my SATA drives. I honestly have no idea what the difference between IDE and SATA mean, or if my computer not detecting the IDE drives even means anything. Maybe I never had IDE drives? I am a total noob in the hardware department.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Goomba.

I removed the hard drive (hitachigst travelstar) and placed another one from another laptop. The laptop worked well. I placed the 1st hard drive in the 2nd laptop. I got the same error as above.

So is something wrong with the hard drive???

When I shake it gently, I can hear a small part moving inside. This doesnt happen in the 2nd hard drive. So is something broken too?

Two times now, at a seemingly random times (both times round about 11:00AM), all of a sudden, loads (and I mean tens of thousands) of TMP files, looking like 0fb149fbcb12b2799cfd1c55fc08b4e9.TMP are pumped into my system32 folder. In a matter of 15 or 20 minutes, this may generated as much as 5GB of used diskspace. Some are 0K, some are 91K, but other than those tow, sizes seem to be constant.

As this happened at work, I didn't have time to launch something like process explorer or similar to check which process has handles in that directory. I just gradually cleaned up the files (which took a long time!), and the problem went.

First time 24/9
Second time 5/10

Whatever process was doing this, has stopped generating the files after a while but this could be due to the fact that my Harddrive was having 0MB free then.

Both times, I was working in my Office Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 environment, with published apps (about 9 or ten open), connected through PNA/ Not sure if that's relevant, but I thoug... Read more

H again,

Found another post that said to delete all files in the prefetch directory. One I found there was FAD052.TMP (with some before and after it). A searhc on this file led me to loads of spyware forums.

Anyway, I deleted the prefecth dir, and I'll keep monitoring it. See what ends end there after a few days.

I have a two year old HP Pavillion (now a year out of waranty) that crashed and now returns "disk read error press ctl+alt+del to restart" when attempting to boot. Using the diagnostic tools avialable under F2, I get the following failure: Hard Drive Short DST Check: FailedFailure ID: GLL3S1-76684P-MFPV7G-60RA03Product ID: E9Z18AV Would anyone be so kind as to tell me what this particular failure ID code means?  Thank you.

A:Disk Read Error on boot, Hard Drive Short DST Check fails

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced.  A retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used-Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Your model is not one of the easiest to replace hdd on but the Maintenance & Service Guide will help you or your chosen repair shop.http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04438537

Hello all,

I'm after some help/advice please?

I have a Compaq Mini Netbook with windows XP installed on it. I would like to sell the netbook however I obviously want to erase my hard drive of any personal data etc and restore the NetBook to factory settings (as in when I bought it new) and leave windows on for the potential buyer!

As with most netbooks it doesn't have a CD drive and already came with windows XP installed. Can anybody give me any insight into how I can accomplish this please?

I would be really grateful for any advice given!!

Thanks,
Scott

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 15 N5050.
This unit was having high lag and memory utilization of 100% shown in task manager and resource monitor. Ran Dell Extended Troubleshooting. Results = Hard Drive error. Replace hard drive.
What are the Hard Drive specs for this unit.
This unit runs Win 7. How do I reinstall on new hard drive?
Thank you in advance for your help!

A:Inspiron N5050 Hard Drive Crashed. Drive type and OS Reinstall help

Any 2.5" SATA notebook drive will work that's 9.5 mm or slimmer.
Ideally you prepared a set of recovery media when you received the system -- if you did not, you will need to contact Dell to purchase that now.

Hello, My PC has 500 GB hard drive that is about 55 percent full at present.  I would like to install a second working drive -- either SSD or regular.  I would connect it via USB 3.0.  Is this possible?

A:Can I add a second hard drive to my Notebook PC?

Yes, you can easily attached an external hard drive via USB 3.0A better option may be to replace your existing Optical Drive Bay/DVD drive with a Hard Drive Caddy.  If you found my answer helpful please say thanks by clicking on the Thumb's Up icon.        If my answer solved your problem please mark it as the Accepted Solution. Hi,

I have installed a new hard drive in my HP Compaq nx6125 notebook. I am also trying to do a clean install of Windows 7.

The new hard drive is 149 GB, larger than previous hard drive.

I am receiving the following error message while trying to install...

"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. Ensure disk's controller is enabled in computer's BIOS menu"

Windows 7 detects new hard drive.

Can someone please help me? Thank you!

TJ

It is for Vista but same principle. Error message when you try to install Windows Vista on a computer that has uninitialized hard disks: "This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk"

Hi,

i'm trying to install a new hard drive in my notebook (dell, running windows 2000),
i know i need a startup disk, right?
but when i try to make a startup disk the system asks me for the cdrom of windows 2000, which i don't have.

the question is can i use any startup disk or one generated by the current os?

i have the cdrom of windows me and a startup disk of windows me, can i use those to install the new hard drive on my notebook?

plus, anything else i should know? any tutorial around?

thank you!

A:installing hard drive in a notebook

Are you wanting to install ME on the new disk? If so, then pop out the old HDD, and put in the new, and use the ME Startup disk to make sure the new drive is fdisked and formatted properly. After that, you can reboot and start installing the OS.

You can learn a lot from one of our member's sites.

I'm running a HP dv8408 notebook with 1.25GB RAM, planning to add a secondary hard drive. There is a second bay in the dv8408. The drive connectors are SATA. My question is: do all notebooks have the some sort of standardized way of holding the hard drives in the chassis? My primary hard drive is clipped to a sort of stainless steel shroud, with two tabs that are screwed into the chassis to hold it in place.
Thanks in advance for any insight. I figure I'm going to end up talking to HP before I figure this one out.

Yes, My friend has an HP Pavilion notebook ze4500. Her hard drive is dead and she wanted to know if she can get any notebook hard drive for it? I told her I don't see why not. Anyway I told her to get this one but she wants to be sure it will work in it before she buys it. Her dead Hard drive was a MK4021GAS:* 40GB capacity ,Rotational Speed:4,200rpm. The one I told her to buy is:Seagate Notebook Internal Hard Drive (ST9120821A)

SGE ST9120821ARK
• 120GB capacity, 5400RPM
• 8MB cache
• Ultra ATA/100

• Highly secure
• Low battery consumption
• For Mac® and PC

Hello. I have a Dell Inspiron 5160, which has a 100GB hard drive, interface type ATA-6. I have 5GB left, so I figured more storage was needed. I purchased a Seagate Momentus 5400.4 250GB hard drive, model ST9250827AS. Here is the problem. I included the model number in case I write the following wrong, the whole problem is in the look of the pins.

I went to install it and saw very quickly the interface pins are very different. On the notebook computer the interface has 42 straight pins, not including the jumpers. On the new hard drive, I can't even count pins because it is a different interface completely. There is a break in the pins...so its hard to describe, but I would say there are two banks of pins. One bank has 15 pins of different lengths and the other bank has 7 pins, also of different lengths. The jumpers seem to be in the same place though..

Has notebook hard drives changed since I bought it in 2004? Is there an adapter that I can get? If so, where could I get one and what would it be called?
HELP

Thank you for your help.

A:Trying to put a SATA 3.0Gb/s hard drive into my ATA-6 notebook

The new ATA harddrive does not come with the end connector (presently on your original drive)
You need to either purchase another end connector, or remove the original one (i Use a small flat screwdriver)

I couldn't find a quick pic on the net (actually didn't search much) but again it's the narrow block at the end of the original HardDrive

Look for your model or serial number go to www.hp.com type in your model and see what the type of HDD is uses or can handle. How old is it? Is it 3 years or less. You might be able to use 160GB or 80GB. Check on the HP site first.

A:Replacing a HP Notebook Hard drive

Not easily, I'm afraid, since you can only connect one drive at a time.

The easiest would be to buy an external USB enclosure for your new drive and then use a cloning tool to clone the old to the new. A recent user used XXClone running from Windows successfully.

The other method involves buying 2 adapters for the drives and connecting them to a desktop for the cloning process.

The enclosure could be used for your old drive as a backup and storage place after the cloning is finished, so that seems the logical best idea.

Free Drive Cloners/Imagers:

SystemRescueCD
EaseUs Disk Copy (Copies disks or partitions)
XXClone
CloneZilla GParted LiveCD (Complete partitioning and drive imaging/restoration tools)
CloneZilla
Partition Saving
PCI CloneMaxx
Drive Image XML
HDClone
DriveClonerXP
Self-Image
copyr.dma (Copies disk with bad sectors for recovery)

Commercial Apps:

O&O DiskImage
Acronis True Image Home
Farstone Drive Clone (Drive image, snapshots, file/folder backups.)
EAZ-FIX Professional and Easy Image
Drive Snapshot
Keriver Image
Avanquest Copy Commander
Paragon Drive Backup
NovaBackup
R-Drive Image
Norton Ghost
HDClone Pro or Enterprise
Terabyte Image for Windows
Terabyte Image for DOS (can directly access FAT, FAT32, and NTFS partitions)
Spotmau Disk Clone & Backup

My 4 year old toshiba satellite is now making noises when I tilt it or put any pressure (resting hands) over the area of the hard drive. It sounds like the hard drive is wobbling or jamming. If I keep tilting it the computer goes to the blue error screen and the computer restarts. Is my hard drive about to die me? Think there is somekind of fix for it?

Pop it open and see if anything is loose like Connectors ect ect....

Whilst you have it open turn it on and find what is making this sound..

When it reboots NOTHING HAPPENS. Just the blank black screen with the cursor.

Is this a new drive?
Your problem sounds typical of a defective hard drive. If new, replace it under warranty.
Most often this problem occurs when any of the first four sectors have defective media.

My wife (bless her heart) dumped a glass of wine on our relatively new HP notebook. The power immediately went out, and of course it wont start up at all. No power. I assume something shorted out or the power supply is cooked. I have no idea.

I was wondering if anyone knew if there was an adapter available out there that would allow me to plug her notepad hard drive into a regular PC via a USB, or Serial port. She's a teacher and has information saved on there vital to her job.

i have an older ibm thinkpad 600E type 2645-4AH that runs on a PII with a 6.4GB Hitachi hard drive. i would like to install a larger hard drive 20GB or 30GB. i took a look at the hard drive in the notebook and it seems to be a size around 12.7mm (0.5 in.) most of the new notebook hard drives i can find are in the 9.5mm (0.37 in.) size. will there be any problems installing a thinner drive than my old drive in the notebook? will it be secure in place or will it move around too much and get easily damaged? would i also need to upgrade the bios?

tks for the help in advance.

The thinner one will be OK. It is screwed into a cradle and that stops it from movong. No you should not need a bios update.

All I wanted to ask was that whether installing a new notebook hard drive is as easy as taking the old one out or will I need some installation kit, software etc etc. Also I'd really appreciate it if somebody could direct me to a site where I can find step by step instructions for installing my new hard drive.
