New tutorials suggested

Q: New tutorials suggested

Not sure if I have put this in the right place but here goes
1. Browser Choice. In Europe we get this option. But when it is taken (I stayed with IE10) the Browser Choice App remains and I cant get rid of it. There seems to be no means to uninstall it. Tried various sites on the web nothing works.
2. In the useful tutorial on backup using W7 recovery in Control Panel there is an option to backup system image to an external drive. I have one @1Tb but it starts then says cant proceed drive full - when it clearly is not. Any ideas? Is it not possible to backup the system image to SkyDrive ?
3. I do not use the Start Screen (Metro) as such but do put into it useful stuff that I need at odd times eg Administrative Tools. There seems to be no way to resize or recolour the tiles apart from "large" or "small". This is a nuisance as it gets too big to fit the screen. I found a site on the web that says it does this but my Rapport tells me it is unsafe so I have not tried it.
4. Is there a way to sort a block on the start screen(Metro) alphabetically without dragging tiles around one at a time.
5. A tutorial on each of these would be grand. I have found tutorials truly useful generally.

What tutorials do you suggest I utilize for the following?
I want to setup on my home network with full access to anybody that is attached to my network (wired or wireless). I'm not worried about somebody driving down the street and making a wireless connection to my network. I think I have that well protected but I'm open for suggestions. If somebody attaches to my wireless network (I will have to give them the key) or they plug into the Ethernet then I want them to have full access to any of my shared drives without jumping through hoops. Entering the wireless password and mapping the drive is all that I want them to do. I'm totally open for suggestions and guidance. I looked through the tutorial index, but I have no idea which I should utilize.
I currently have one desktop and three laptops, all systems are running Win10 pro 10586.164. I've shared several drives on my desktop with full permissions. After upgrading to Win10 10586.164 one laptop can access all the shared drives and has full permissions. The other two laptops get an access error when they attempt to access any drive on the desktop (I get "You do not have permissions to access (drive). Contact your network administrator to request access.) I've spent hours searching for a solution and nothing I found helped.
My desktop has a clean install of Win10 with the upgrade to 10586.164. The three laptops are upgrades from Win8 to Win 8.1 to Win10 (early versions) to Win10 10586.164. I've been avoiding the cle... Read more

Like many of you...I have never taken the time to visit the tutorials available here at BC which cover various questions/points which some of us have.Until today . sincerely urge all of you who are not familiar with this take a few minutes and scroll through the list of topics which are covered. If you see somthing that you feel might be beneficial or interesting to delve into later...just go to that topic and then add that webpage to your favorites.I have an extended list of such references (almost 1,000) which I keep in a folder marked Computer Help in my Favorites and I find that doing this saves me a lot of time in seeking information that might help someone or myself.Louis

I followed the advice in Tutorials "How to update a Windows hardware driver" Using the prog recommended, it showed 41 good drivers and 17 bad drivers.
Using Device Manager I right clicked each item and 'updated drivers'. Every one came back saying ?The wizard could not find a better match?.?
I looked up one manufacturers web site and found updates but none related to my hardware
So the question is. Are they out of date, or not?

Most likely if they are working you shoudn't need to update them. The only reason to update your drivers is if certain components on the computer are not working correctly.

So, I'm a newbie to computer security, but it's definately an interesting subject. I see all of these gurus around these boards helping everyone they possibly can.

So where exactly did these gurus learn their tricks? I don't know, but I'd like to.

With my computer experience in programming and networking I've noticed the best and usually only way is to read, read, and read more. I didn't figure this as an exception. So, I'd like to suggest some tutorials. And also, list books if you can (I'll just read the tut.s to hold me down until I get one).

Here are the subjects I'd like to expand on:

A:Suggested Hjt Log

Hello healing41 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

Fragmentation isn't really a malware issue. It is just a natural occurance that happens over time. XP has a built-in defragmenter and there are many 3rd party disk-defragmenters. It is good to defragment a drive occasionally but unless the disk is heavily fragmented and the free disk space is less than about 10% of the drive there will probably not be a noticible performance improvement. The 2 files that will have the biggest impact from fragmentation are the swap file and the Master File Table which can only be defragmented with 3rd party defragers. NTFS file systems handle file fragmentation better than the old FAT system found on older operating systems like Win98 so an acasional defrag with the built-in XP utility should be Ok.

?Checked hardware, no yellow ! marks
?Checked memory...all 6 scans 2 passes...nada.
?Checked drivers...diagnostic came up empty handed
?turned off startups...disabled windows services...nothing
?Defraged, disc cleanup, reverted to an earlier state for windows...none helped
?attempted to change Anti Virus Programs since Avira & Mcafee caught nothing...
now I can't install AVG because Mcafee is still present somehow...although
I couldn't uninstall it the traditional way...I googled and found links from threads that led
me to the uninstall tool...which I ran and's no longer in the uninstall options..but
AVG still says it can't Install because of McAfee.

I'm basically posting this now..because I don't see any fixes different than the ones I've already tried.
Can anyone help. I did go through some of the rules and if I broke any of them in this post...I appologize. I'm in safe mode now and my screen size sucks typing this too. Thanks. I'm glad

novice OS developer, and explaines everything in detail, while still being very easy
to follow.

This series follows a step by step approch, and builds a small 32 bit x86-compatible

It uses C and x86 assembly language.

If anyone is interested in OS development, or OS's in detail, heres the base site...

As a technology teacher I have written tutorials for the students to follow while using new software in school. Some I have written in Word and some in Coral. What I need to know is how to convert these files into Tutorials like the ones used in 'real' applications, without toolbars ect. and with just a 'next' and 'back' button to turn the pages. What sort of files are 'real' tutorials and can I change the files I have written into the same format. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been perusing through all the different topics and didn't see one that would encompass general PC maintenance to improve speed and start-up time? I know in working in the technology field, that is probably the most common question I get from friends and family. "My PC is so slow, what can I do"? I generally advise them the usual of ridding of junk files using the CCleaner utility, un-checking unnecessary items from the startup, and defragging if need be. Not sure if this is the best advice, but a good start nonetheless. Does anyone know if there is a good general PC maintenance tutorial on here or another site that would provide easy to follow steps for the average user on things they can do periodically to help improve the PC's speed on startup and in general?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been looking through the great tutorials here and have tried step by step to rid the computer of malware but no luck. It all started with Total Security. I tried to remove with anti-spyware of different types that I've had good luck with in the past. Now the computer has really gotten infected. I've tried using HJT, Maleware and others as the tutorials have mentioned. When I use them for the first time they will start then get killed off. When try to start from desktop after being saved after first initial setup it comes up error on all the anti-virus, and spyware, etc. that I've tried. Also task manager will not come up stating the administrator has turned off my access but I'm the administrator. Anyone ever heard of this? Thank you in advance!

My Altec Lansings are crapping out on me again. I need one with STRONG wiring & will last a long time to come. The quality isn't a huge issue since I'm just using the on-board audio. Nothing fancy like 5.1.

Help is much appreciated.

For ripping, try WMP itself. It's pretty good at ripping music CDs and the like into MP3.

Hello !! Welcome to SF !!

I guess the IE is messed up resulting this behaviour. The best thing to do would be to reset IE to default settings then try to turn off suggested sites might fix it.

Hi friends,
I am an exclusive FF user (except for MS sites ).
I found a very good extension for FF which I would like to share with you. Its called Flashblock 1.5.1. Go to Mozilla homepage>extensions and search with above name. You will find it.
It stops all the flash materials on an webpage and gives you an option to allow it to play it or not. As most of the flash materials are AD so it also increases your security.
My yahoo pages are loading lightning fast now. Try it & LoL.

A:Suggested Extention for FF

Thanks src. Another one you might want to install for extra security is NoScript which blocks all javascript, and has an option to block flash as well. It puts an icon in the status bar which you can click to allow java/flash for a particular site if required.

Ariesjill: Both tutorials are good and should get the job done.
Just be sure that you use only the correct # of standoffs and that they are in the correct place.
I always install the CPU/hsf on the board outside the box so that I have all the room I need to install the mobo.
Some cases are so small that it is advisable to remove drives, PSU, etc., so you have room to move around in the box.
Have fun.

There are tons of articles on installing and supporting Exchange, but I can't seem to find one for a company actually using Exchange. We are mainly interested in sharing contacts, calendars, and other basic features. So far, we're just plodding around blindly and finding it confusing.

Waht are some of the best books and sites to learn how to program C++ and VB for a beginner in programming, but not in HTML and stuff liek that that i already know. thanx

A:Best Books/Tutorials To Learn C++ and VB

To start with VB, I used Learn Visual Basic 6 in 21 days, then later used More Visual Basic 6 in 21 days. After I finished with both these, I used some How To books which were specifically for a particular topic like Database How To and one General VB 6 How To.

I think by the time you are thru with these books, you won't need any further books and MSDN would suffice.

Learning thru net and sites is okay, but books are better. If you are new to programming, I would suggest start with VB and leave C++ for some other day. Learn to swim in a swimming pool and then go for the ocean
