Q: New windows 8 Samsung Laptop is slower than 3 year old HP

I currently have an hp paviliondv4 (4gb RAM, 2.2GHZ with windows 7 and avast anti virus). I just bought and returned a Samsung NP550 (6GB RAM, 2.5GHZ with windows 8 and Kepersky security). As soon as I began surfing the net I noticed my new 600 dollar purchase was actually slower than my hp. I ran numerous speed tests and found out my less powerful hp was dogging my brand new more powerful computer. Best buy refunded the purchase completely but not with out a fight. At first they said it was not the computers fault and the Samsung was indeed faster as they pointed out the .3 GHZ advantage it had over the 2.2GHZ hp. They said internet speed is the only factor when speed testing...NONSENSE. I tested both computers on the same internet and the hp was faster in every category every time. The tech and I speed tested the two laptops once side by side and the hp won. Still he said It's not the computer. I told them to have a side by side race with my hp 50 times on the same internet opening a page and playing a video and that's when they refunded me completely including setup. I went to the back of the store and the display model was out performing my hp. Now I'm thoroughly confused. Maybe the display has a different security program? Is this a windows 8 issue? could Kapersky be causing lag? Did I get a defected model?
hp has AMD processor and the Samsung has core i5

I bought a new Acer Travelmate 6592G (with docking station) just after Christmas to replace my 4 year old Acer desktop. This new laptop is slower than my old system. It seems to be running a lot of stuff that I don't use or want, as it takes forever to boot. Can anyone suggest how I can speed this thing up. I would appreciate any and all comments. Below is the hi-jack log. I can't believe how long it is. On my old desktop's log was only a fraction this size. I am on a network, but don't use bluetooth or any of the laptop's security features. I also prefer WordPerfect to Word

Thanks

Hi TechSupport,

I built a gaming pc about a year ago now and never really took notice of my boot time until I saw it side by side with my old laptop. It has a significantly slower boot time compared to my laptop and I have no idea why. When I switch it on the BIOS goes by normally as it should and then it starts the "Starting Windows" section. Once the animation is finished it hangs there for a good 20-30 seconds before moving onto the log in part. I have checked Task Manager after the computer is fully booted; it had 59 processes, cpu was at 0% and memory usage was at 27-30%. I don't have any useless software installed (unless you count games as useless). I'd appreciate any help that you can give me.
EDIT: My system specs can be viewed on the side
EDIT2: The computer runs fine perfectly once booted

Thanks

I cannot believe it. This damn laptop, out of the blue, completely died. Will not boot from hard drive, will not restore to the image I created on another partition...will not do anything. The recovery/restore programs actually throw an error...pretty ugly. So who knows what the heck this is. I have all malware/virus scanning - all of that is running and secure. It did a Windows update the very last time I shut down, and this is how it came up (or didn't!). I am beyond pissed...and hoping that the thing is not trash can material.

I have the "Samsung Media Recovery Disk", and am attempting to reinstall the system that way. As I have not done this before (at least on this laptop) I don't know what my next selection should be. I have attached a screen shot. Can anyone help?

Hi,

I bought my laptop about a year ago, and back then it was absolutely amazing. But with time it has become slower, and I'm wondering if you could help me with some tips on how to make it run faster in games like Borderlands 2, Minecraft and Watch Dogs.

some of my specs are:
Intel Core i7-4700M
NVIDIA GeForce 780M
x1 SSD 125GB (Main, windows installed here)
x1 HDD 1,5TB (Secondary, steam, games etc installed here)
Resolution: 1920 x 1080

A:Gaming laptop getting slower and slower, tips needed

Defrag, clear cache's, uninstall unused programs/games.
Check for dust buildup.
Think about and take a look at the programs you now have versus initially. If they are not needed right away, set them to not auto load with windows. Run as needed instead of always on.

Check the manufacturer site for and update drivers. (Video, audio, USB, ect. )

The more stuff you add, the slower it will get, so trim it back to what you need and it should speed back up.
Also check that your antivirus has a game mode, as antivirus are the largest slowdown of a system.

I guess it is also possible that over time the PSU and hardware can wear down and have trouble performing, but try the cleaning and stuff first.

I have updated my Samsung 550P7C from Windows 7 to Windows 10. The update process appears to have loaded drivers for all the devices successfully, apart from the touchpad.

In the case of the touchpad, a Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad driver has been loaded; it works satisfactorily, except that there is no option to reverse the direction of two-finger scrolling. ((When the laptop was running Windows 7, the touchpad driver was for a Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad, and two-finger scrolling worked in the "reverse" direction.)

I have tried updating the driver using the Samsung Update facility, but this did not help.

I have checked available drivers on the Samsung web site, but it only lists Windows 7 drivers. (I'm sure that the last time I checked, it also listed Windows 10 drivers!)

My questions are:
I have found a site (http://www.driverscape.com/manufacturers/samsung/laptops-desktops/550p5c-550p7c/1166) that claims to provide Windows 10 drivers for the 550P7C. Is it safe / sensible to download drivers from sites such as this, or would I simply be downloading a virus?! Or can someone suggest where I could obtain a Windows 10 driver? Is there any way to check the manufacturer and model of the touchpad, without disassembling the laptop?Would loading a driver for a different Samsung laptop be an alternative? If so, can anyone suggest which model ranges would be most likely to use the same touchpad as the 550P7C?

I am attempting to repair my friend's Samsung laptop running windows 8.1. I don't have the model name in front of me but I can post it when I get home if important. After a software update (as was told to me) and then subsequent reboot, the little cyclone spins around for a few seconds and then just a blank, white screen, no BSOD or something similar . I downloaded the manual which says in case of windows not starting to hit F4 upon start up. Hitting F4 does not cause any different change of events, just the spinning cyclone and then white screen. I can hit F2 to get into the BIOS but I don't see any settings in there such as "access recovery mode" or something similar that can help me. Unfortunately there is no cd/dvd media with the laptop.

Any suggestions? Are there any bootable troubleshooting programs I can download and burn to a CD that might help me? I was tempted to pay $120 for windows 10 and just see if it would boot off that and then load windows 10 but I'm afraid if it's not a software issue then I would be out$120.

I am trying to install Windows 7 on a Samsung NP300E5E laptop. The laptop had Windows 8 pre-installed.

I followed your tutorial on how to do a clean installation of Windows 7, followed the UEFI route using a usb that I created by using the setup dvd as described in the tutorial and changed all settings in the setup.

After the laptop did a reboot during last part of the setup, it doesnt want to go any further, just gives an installation error stating that the setup will continue after rebooting, and then reboots and does the same again. No error number to go by.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi, i recently restored my windows 7 laptop and everything went fine. I backed it up and everything. And before i restored it, i used to be able to connect to the wifi automatically. Now, instead of it showing the bars that you see on the bottom of your screen that shows that it can be connected to a network, now it shows an icon of a computer with a red X on it. I have tried several things but nothing seems to work. For example, i have tried "netsh wlan show drivers" on Command Prompt and it just says "There is no wireless interface on the system." I have also tried going on Services and set WLAN Autoconfig to Automatic and i changed the status to 'Started'. And I did the same with Network Connections, Network List Service, Network Location Awareness, and Network Store Interface Service. I have also gone to Network and Sharing Center>Change Adapter Settings. There it just has the picture of a 2 monitors and it says Bluetooth Network Connection, but it says "Not Connected". Someone please help me. Thanks for reading.

Hello.

My problem is that I can't install windows 7 on my laptop even from the recovery disk which came with it. I have tried other 7 editions too, but neither works.

Problems begun when I tried to install ubuntu on one of my partitions. After installing it didn't boot and do anything at all. Then the problems came, and by accident I changed the attributes of the recovery partition that cam with the laptop (I made it visible somehow). After I have found that no more I can use that partition (recovery won't work). Then I tried to install the windows from the DVD-disk. I found that the install hangs at some point (after choosing partition to install the OS on). From my experience I knew that sometimes you can't install the windows OS from a disk if you have the recovery partition (Asus case?). Then I deleted the recovery partition.

Here problems became even worse. If before the install hanged somewhere after choosing the partition to install on, now on the install hangs either after writing "starting windows" with only the red visible from the whole WINDOWS FLAG, and that only a point.

Should I take my laptop to the recovery center or the problem can be solved with available in the internet methods?

I am not entirely sure what happened or how to fix this, so here is what I was doing and what i've done to try and fix it.

I was on my samsung laptop last night, and I found a folder called "Searches>Indexed locations". I saw it was taking up some space so i went through some of the files seeing that some were Type:Shortcuts. So I deleted them to free up a bit of space thinking "it's only a shortcut, can't harm it". Now some icons are missing from my windows 8 start screen and some programs have become inoperable because of missing files. I tried System restore to bring some of it back, it was going ok, then when it tried to restart, showed the samsung logo, then just blackscreened for 4+ hours. It was on , but blank. Haven't been using the laptop long so I don't really know the specs on it.

My parents got it for me, they said it came with no DvD/CD for me to use to format the laptop and I cant get it on to boot it up right for me to format it to begin with.

I atleast do know the graphics card was an AMD Radeon HD 7460
Can't seem to access Bios either.

EDIT: One thing I forgot to mention which might have something to do with it, is I was using a custom windows 8 theme, because microsoft, being as stingy as they are, from what i assume does not enable you to have your own theme, so I had something called the "ribbon disabler and UXTheme Cracker" to use a custom windows 8 theme.

Samsung laptop owners are being urged to update their Windows PCs after the discovery of a vulnerability that can allow remote attackers to download files onto a targeted system and gain complete control over the laptop.
The flaw is tied to a feature called “Samsung SW Update Tool 2.2.5.16” designed keep Samsung laptop users’ drivers and software up to date. Security researchers at Core Security discovered the vulnerability in November 2015 and disclosed the flaw March 4 after Samsung issued the patch to fix the problem.

Hello everyone,

Got a problem with a fresh install on my laptop like the title says. Normally I can always figure pc related problems myself but this is my second night trying to fix it and I"m about to give up. So my last resort is to create a topic here, hopefully someone can help me out and figures something I haven't tried yet (or make a conclusion my laptop is ****ed).

So here's the situation. Bought this samsung R710 laptop about 2 years ago with vista premium on it. With windows 7 release got a digital legit version through my student program on MSDNAA. Downloaded the image, burned, install went all smooth. So basically I've been cruising on windows 7 professional 32 bit since the release without ANY problem.

Thing is now, computer was getting slow and started to see some malware and spyware so like most people do then, time for fresh windows install! So yesterday I started the process of getting the fresh install. Backing up all my files on my external hdd en found my windows 7 dvd again. So my computer is nearly completely empty, something like 250gb free of the 300gb.

Got the disc in, rebooted my pc in the hope that the installation starts. And here comes the problem, it's getting the disc and i'm getting the screen with windows is loading the files, then the windows is starting logo. Then I see some low resolution big ass mouse appearing on the screen and I"m like, well this is going fine, this is the installation starting like I remember. Well after ... Read more

Hi. My father has a Samsung S6 and wishes to copy photos from it to a Windows 10 laptop.

When I visited him recently we were able to copy photos from his S6 to his Windows 10 desktop PC without any issues (with phone connected to PC USB port). But we couldn't manage to copy them to his new laptop, a HP Pavilion x360 (Windows 10).

We searched Google and tried a few suggestions (updating drivers for S6 via Device Manager, and uninstalling S6 > restarting HP x360 > reinstalling S6) but with no success (when S6 was connected to HP x360 there was always yellow triangle with exclamation mark next to HP icon in 'Devices and drives' in 'This PC')

Any advice would be very appreciated.

I recently reinstalled windows 7 on my samsung rv511 laptop and now it's running very slow and many features aren't working.

i've been reading forums and chipping away for 2 weeks so far. if anyone has any other ideas, they'd be much appreciated.

here are the main problems i have noticed
1. hdmi connection not working.
2. itunes tells me i don't have hd drivers installed.
3. computer generally running slowly.
4. shift keys and caps lock key often don't work (this was also an issue before reinstall)
5. 3 samsung drivers failed to install on multiple occasions.

here's what i've done so far;
1. reinstalled windows 7 from cd
3. installed all drivers for my model from samsung website
4. installed all windows automatic and optional updates
5. ran nvidia scan to check for updates (none needed)

i've read on seven forums that samsung computers can be very difficult to reinstall, so any advice would be much appreciated.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this question, but i'll post it anyway since it's a big problem for me.

I wanted to help a friend of mine by downgrading his Windows 8 laptop.
I installed Windows 7 x64 by DVD without any problems.
I've formatted al drives.

After the installation the laptop tried to boot, but it only shows a black screen after the BIOS splash screen.

Bios settings:
Fast BIOS : enabled
AHCI Mode Control : Auto
Secure Boot : Disabled
OS Mode Selection : UEFI and Legacy OS

The laptop is a Samsung NP355E7C-S04NL
The BIOS version is: P02ABF

The HDD is set up as the primary boot device.
The strange thing is that if I use the Boot Override option and select this HDD, Windows boot normally!
Of course this only works once, so I always need to go into the BIOS to use the boot override option.

Does anybody have any experience with this problem and maybe a way to fix it?

YES & NO, down to your UEFI/BIOS firmware setting.

As this a OEM manufacturer's PC with Pre-installed Windows 8.

Downgrade Windows 8 to Windows 7
Warning you must have the UEFI/BIOS firmware setting in Step Three set.

Make sure you read the NOTE at Step three.

2) If Using a USB Pen drive on a PC with a UEFI BIOS.
USB Pen drive need to be formatted to FAT32 as in
UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows
Take note of Step 11 for Windows 7.
Also you will need to use a USB 2.0 port, as there are no USB 3.0 drivers in Windows 7.

Hello,

Hopefully I followed the instructions as described.

My laptop has gotten slower and slower and slower. I've tried multiple "cleaning" applications but nothing seems to work. One symptom I can re-produce every time is when watching a YouTube video, it it extremely choppy. It's almost as if my PC can't keep up with the video. The audio stays constant but the video skips large amounts of frames. Also, when clicking between tabs in Firefox, it's almost as if I have something intensive running in the background. I click on the tab, then a second later it will actually click on the tab. Everything is delayed.

Hopefully this is detailed enough. I would be happy to answer any questions.

Thanks...

EDIT: I uninstalled Flash using the Adobe Flash Uninstaller before running these logs.

I reinstalled windows 7 64 bit on my Samsung R580 and now a lot of things aren't working. It used to have windows 7 home premium 32 bit on it from the factory. The wifi isn't connecting, the ethernet port doesn't work/ isn't connecting to internet, the hdmi output doesn't work. I used to be able to change the brightness/volume using the FN key and the arrow keys and now that doesn't work. The taskbar used to be see through and now its a solid color and I can't get it to be see through again. I think that's because something with the chipset is wrong or the driver. There used to be a power setting called Samsung optimized and now that's not there either. I don't have any of the backup file/ disks either. I appreciate if anyone could help me out...I really messed this up.

Everything you need to know is here to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7?

Unfortunately Samsung is one of the hardest to get everything working correctly after the reinstall, however if it can be done then we will help you finish it.

First go to the Samsung Support Downloads webpage for your exact model to download to a flash stick or CD the network LAN driver, install it to get online.

Once online immediately install all of your Important and Optional Windows Updates after enabling Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware . These will include more drivers and important performance updates.

Once all Updates are done, look in your Device Manager for which drivers are missing and import them from the same Samsung SUpport Downloads webpage for your model. s

Now watch closely to see what isn't working correctly and look for a software package on the same Downloads page for FN Function key software which often includes both the functions and the lighting, any hotfixes which solve an issue you may be experiencing.

Those problems which you have problems with should be posted back here so we can help you resolve them. Often you can ask google and will get an even faster answer since almost any problem which has already been solved can normally be found by google if you deftly ask the question.

Hey all
Recently my internal WD Scorpio blue 320GB Hard drive broke on my 3 year old samsung r510 laptop. it made the classic buzzing noise (i also dropped an external HDD so i know what it sounds like)

anyway i bought a new one, same make but 250GB and put it in my laptop. When using the "system recovery media" supplied by Samsung to install Vista, i got the following error when selecting a drive to install to;
"This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

when i click on the hard drive partition and try to click next, i get this message;
"Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation."
Anyway this drove me nuts. Here is what i have done already to no avail:

1) Followed microsoft support advice for the errors. I Formatted the disk, Deleted it, partitioned it, restarted the laptop repeated again and again. still nothing.
2)Changed the order of the BOOT devices in the BIOS menu. (the laptops BIOS menu options are pretty limited and ive tried changing what i can, but still nothing.
3)Used an official Vista from my Tower Comp in the laptop to see if it would install. still nothing.
4)plugged the hard drive into my tower. The tower is pretty old and still has IDE connected hard drives. when booting up the tower, it obviously booted up the new HD first so i put in the samsung recovery media disk and inst... Read more

Hello, I am trying to do a fresh install of windows on my Samsung R510 Laptop.
The screen is completely broken and has been totally removed. I use an external monitor in order to use the laptop.
The LCD connector is no longer connected to the motherboard.
However, the external monitor does not become active/receive a signal until the laptop boots to the Windows Log On screen. I cannot get the external monitor to display the BIOS/boot settings and have tried everything I can think of and searched the internet long and hard for a solution.
I have disconnected the LCD completely from the motherboard, however the laptop still does not automatically send signal to the external monitor immediately. I have tried pressing FN+F4 at various points during the boot, and it has no effect.
Is there anyway to disable the original monitor completely so the boot and BIOS boots immediately sending signal to the external monitor?
Does anyone know where the laptop Lid Switch is located on the R510? I have read one post where it is suggested to put a magnet over the lid switch to trick the computer into thinking the lid is closed upon boot thus automatically sending signal to the external monitor.
I cannot install a fresh copy of Windows without being able to see the boot screen on the laptop and this is what I need to do.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Hello, and Welcome

See if this works. At boot tap the F2 key (page 79 of the user manual). This will cause the Computer to enter the BIOS screen. If you got it right, Windows will not boot up and you will not see the Windows start screen on the external monitor. Now press the Fn key + F4 at the same time. This key combination is supposed to change the output from the LCD to the external monitor which should let you see the BIOS screen on the external monitor. See page 50 of your user manual.

I recently bought a Samsung NP350V5C-A06UK laptop with windows 8 pre-installed on it. I deleted all partitions when I began installing Windows 7 on the laptop (deleting the horrid Windows 8 in the process).
The problem I have now is that I can't boot straight to windows. All I get is a blank screen. I have to go into bios (F2) and boot from the exit screen by selecting the hard drive listed there.

Within the bios I have disabled:
Fast bios mode,
Secure boot,
and changed OS mode selection to "UEFI and Legacy OS"

A:Samsung NP350V5C-A06UK Laptop - Windows 7 boot problem

Hello and welcome Mcclaine Mate for all the problems it is going to cause personally I would have one of to things
1: stuck with 8 and use on of the programs that starts it up like 7
2: I would find some way of wiping that drive buy an OEM 7 and install it.

Of course you do realise that this will void any warranty eh?

Usually if you try to install over another OS it means problems the other thing is is to buy a new drive not expensive depending on what you want of course. I do see it comes with a 1TB drive bit if you go 500GB then you can always clone to the larger one not vice versa. Myself I do not like larger than 500GB as when the big ones go south so does a lot of data. The 1TB you could wipe anyway put it in an enclosure and use it as an external.

Ok, so the problem is that this computer refuses to boot it is in some kind of sleep mode after it boots with black screen nothing works so i have to press once power button to go to sleep than press it again so i can see the mouse pointer with black screen(this is the only path i am able to hold shift and reach recovery mode) , so far i tried refresh i got message this computer cannot be refreshed same goes for reset and when i tried system restore it said no restore points added also safe mode does not work - SO i guess failed update to 8.1 or something worse i tried also sfc /scannow repaired something but no help(run it 4 5 times to make sure) I can't tell what kind of Samsung model is cause while i type here i am running chkdsk /r on windows partition also i can't lift it cause the case is broken and the owner has created some stand that holds the laptop so i will guess series 6 or 7 , any clue on what to do next will be appreciated. (there is f4 factory recovery that prbably works but if there's a chance to save data easily than copying 300 gb to external disk via ubuntu.

Also ran Hdat2x for 30 minutes no hdd errors.

I have two laptops, both Samsung, one mine and one my sisters.
My one is Windows 8 and her one is a slightly older model so Windows 7
Now both are are very similar in spec, being 4GB and Intel Pentium 2.3GHz models.
She recently asked me if i could sort out her laptop with Windows 8, so I said yep should be no problem.
I went and bought a Windows 8 Pro 64bit and was at first going to just do a plain install. But then had a bright idea and thought why not do an image of mine and recover it to hers, and then when started up just enter the key of the new one. that way she gets a full original Samsung install along with all the apps and everything.
At first i tried the samsung built in Recovery software but had no luck as it was just a complete nightmare. Not booting the USB I put it on for the first few times, then eventually after changing the BIOS setting to UEFI and formatting her Disk to GPT it started but then said no image found. In end I tried the old way by using the Windows built in File Recovery Image tool which made me a repair disc and 3 discs for the image itself.
This booted first go and went all way through the recovery, and then did the usual "restarting in X seconds ..."
But after it rebooted to my horror the Samsung Logo screen appears and then after that it just stays blank.
It does every few seconds momentarily flicker on the screen but then just goes bank again. I cant even get into the BIOS anymore or boot from anything.

Most, if not all laptops are designed to operate that way. However, try pressing [F2] at boot up to get it to the CMOS/BIOS Setup screen. Now press [Fn][F4] to attempt to toggle the output from the internal LCD to the external monitor.

I have an Acer Aspire 3100 that I got for Christmas in late 2006. I'm still using it to this day with Windows 7 as it came with Windows XP. However, the 60GB HDD it came with is starting to give me trouble so I was thinking about upgrading to an SSD.

Would this be possible with my laptop? I'm not entirely sure of the HDD connection but I believe it may be IDE. If this is the case, then will I need to get some kind of SATA to IDE adapter to use an SSD, or do they possibly make SSD's that can fit my laptop? I can only hope that I am not out of luck when it comes to upgrading the sustainability of my old and faithful mobile computing device.

Thank you for the helpful, yet knowledgeable replies.

A:SSD on 5 year old laptop?

The Aspire 3100 appears to use a 2.5" ATA100 (PATA) drive.

As far as I know, SSDs in that form factor are SATA.

While SATA to IDE adapters appear to exist, I'd be surprised if one would fit in a laptop. (I haven't checked for the 3100, but it may include a proprietary mounting adapter, that would have to be transferred to a replacement HD.) Can't swear that it's impossible.

A quick look at www.newegg.com shows a couple of 2.5" PATA 5400 RPM replacement drives, so at least you can keep the old laptop alive.

Hi

I have bought a new samsung laptop. I have installed a 30 day trial version of windows 7. But the loading is taking long time and i am seeing black screen for long time.

It is core i5 laptop
Which version of windows 7 / 8 (beta) supported?

I bought this laptop with dos version. I guess it is a mistake. The present windows 7 is not working good on my laptop which i got it from a torrent site.

I have another 27 days to go before activating it.

The laptop should have come with Windows 7, and yes, it's completely compatible. If you don't have a license sticker with a Windows 7 key, you should look into buying one ASAP. Do NOT use a torrented version, as it could contain malware.

I'm going to be traveling for the next year, and I'm not taking my laptop with me. I have a Dell Inspiron from August 2006, and someone told me that the internal battery would "die" if I keep the machine turned off for a year. Is someone able to confirm or deny this? Ideally, I would like to be able to use it when I return. I also have a friend who could turn it on for me regularly while I'm gone to keep it working, if that would be good. But if that's an option, I'm wondering how often it should be turned on. Can anyone help with this? I would really appreciate any advice! Thanks a lot!

A:Can I keep my laptop turned off for a year?

I would recommend removing the battery if you're not going to be using it for a year. You will need to charge the battery completely when you go to use it again.

I have owned the laptop for 2 years, purchased new. a week or so ago, it started telling me I have a non genuine version of windows and need to activate.

I tried the on line system to re activate, but the key was rejected ? I then wanted to try the phone method but once validation is started, ( right click computer >activate now )I don't get the option to activate by phone, just a message saying this key is invalid.

This is very confusing, it has worked flawlessly for 2 years, I tried ringing the Australia activation ( I got the number from internet ) and was asked to enter the first 6 installation ID numbers, which I got from the MGAdiag report, but was told the number is invalid too. So I am stuck, nothing works here.

How can I get the phone activation on screen, it's not given as an option? Microsoft automatic phone person just hangs up on me.

I have done thorough scanning for malware and all is working fine, have I been hacked?

Ron.

Which key are you using to activate this installation? You must use the 25 character product key afixed to the COA sticker stuck to the bottom of your laptop.

I bought this laptop on ebay new for my mother and had kept it in my closet for a few months. I gave it to her as a gift and a few months later i was watching her use it and noticed she was repeatedly shutting down the laptop and turning it back on, i asked why? She said the internet wouldnt work unless she did that multiple times. So i had a look at it and made sure all of the drivers were installed (they were) and counldnt find out why it was doing it other than a hardware issue (possibly) So i asked her where the warranty was tried to see if i could get hp to take it back, but the warranty said it has expired. She didnt use this thing for a year, i kept it in my closet for months..is there some way hp takes in certain cases and looks past the warranty date?  I cant really afford to buy her another nor can she and she is stuck with this thing. The laptop is still in very good condition we just need the internet to work on it. Is there anything that can be done?

I feel so sad on my G50-80 laptop which dies only after 1.5 years. Starting about 1 months ago it started very slow, after power on it stays in black screen for couples of minutes, then started booting as normal, then that wait time become longer and longer, last Friday it took me about 8 hours to see the boot screen. Sent my laptop to Microcenter for fixing which is a certified fixing provider close to my house, they just give me a call saying it's motherboard issue and the parts could not be found any more. More than 700 bucks for 1 year and a half, how expensive it's! Not sure is there anybody able to help? Maybe even old motherboard, as long as it's working, is acceptable to me.

Hello,

I've never posted here before but I've read through the rules and some stickies so hopefully I'm doing this right.

My wonderful laptop is running very slow. I've only done the usual virus scans, disk defrag and clean up, and did a registry clean up once a few months ago (which I now know is bad after reading through some threads). Generally, it's running sluggish and is probably just clogged with God knows what, but it seems like it's just from three years of daily use.

My question is, is there any general things I can do to clean it up? Is there a thread with a list of programs I can use to give it a nice boost? There's probably a lot of uneeded programs running in the background but I'm not sur what is needed and what is not. I was going to use the system restore DVD to wipe it clean like I bought it new, but that seems a bit too drastic just to get it cleaned out.

Hello,
I have started to get fairly frequent BSoD on my Dell XPS 17 L10x laptop which I bought just over a year ago now. The error message at the top of the blue screen says "driver_irql_not_less_or_equal". The specs of the laptop are:
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
CPU: Intel i5 480m
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GT435M
RAM: 4GB (not sure of specs)
HDD: 320 GB (again not sure of specs)
Sound: On board realtek, although I use an M Audio audio interface as I do some recording work.
I also use an external TV display as a second screen, which is connected using an HDMI cable. Hope this is enough information with the attached dump info.

A:Random BSoDs on one year old laptop

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible. Please attach the DMP files to your next post not to post one.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

Quote:
* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Quote:
* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

Hi all,

I have an HP G60 Notebook PC running Windows 7 Home Premium. I have had the laptop since 2010 and have used it for general everyday use. Over the past couple of years, it has become sluggish in its overall performance and has started some strange quirks. Here are a few issues I'm wondering about:

-Sometimes when waking it from hibernate the screen won't come on even though the computer will. Even upon pressing the keyboard and mouse, the screen still won't turn on. It takes a hard shutdown and reboot before it turns back on.

- I generally keep it plugged in, but it often tells me that the battery needs replacement and regularly suggests that I use an HP Smart AC Adapter "for full performance". Anyone heard of these and does it actually improve performance?

- I maintain and run Trend Microvirus antivirus software and run Advanced System Care to clean out the system, however, it has still become slow in its boot time and regular performance. I don't store much on it, so there are really no space issues as far as the hard drive indicates, and it doesn't receive very heavy usage. I'm wondering...is there anything I can do to try to improve the performance, or is this a product of a 4-year old computer these days or rather a just a poor computer? I'd rather extend the life of it if possible over buying a new one right away.

Thanks for the help!

Hi,
I've read every post I could find on this so I'm sorry to ask another dumb question but here goes.

I created an access database (volunteer work) which has an autoincrement field to issue numbers to animals taken in at our shelter. My 'boss' (also a volunteer) wants this simple autoincrement changed to a value which begins with the two digit year and then has 4 digits, starting with 0001 which will increment sequentially and restart at 0001 with the new calendar year. Therefore, records will start with 10-0001, 10-0002, etc for this year and 11-0001, 11-0002 for next year.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I found a post on this exact topic from back in 2010. I am trying to incorporate the code into my database and am not able to get the code to work if I make any changes. Here is the link to the previous thread: http://forums.techguy.org/business-...increment-field-including-year-restart-2.html

I have also uploaded the database that was provided in the last post. If I try to change the field and object names I appear to be unsuccessful in having the code still work even when I change the items in the code as well. I woud like some help. I would like for there to be a field called "RequestDate" that has the date stamp that is keyed in by the user. Then after that is keyed in on the form the "AssignmentID" field is updated to the new assignment number. The "RequestDate"="Admit_Date" and "AssignmentID"="ActualFWCNumber". I am trying to do this in Access 2010. If I make changes either the number field doesn't autopopulate or the same number keeps repeating. Any and all assistance on this would be great.

tamanthalou, welcome to the forum.
As you have posted the original database a copy of your database with no data in it would be better to understand your problem.

I have created
C:\00 - savehere \2012
C:\00 - savehere \2013
C:\00 - savehere \2014

current vba code is:-
ChDir "C:\00 - savehere \2012"
Range("c57:h102").ExportAsFixedFormat Type:=xlTypePDF, Filename:=composedfn & ".pdf"
Is there a way to save to ChDir "C:\00 - savehere \ currentyear
without having to change the vba integer value to each new year? or using if statements for each year? So when the 1st of jan comes it automatically save to the new current year directory and if possible creates a directory at the start of each new year as well?

A:Solved: Save PDF to a year directory each new year or month

If folder exist....

' Does this directory exist? If not, create it.
If objFSO.FolderExists(strParentPath) = False Then
Set newFolder = objFSO.CreateFolder(strParentPath)
Wscript.Echo "Put a ocr fold here" &
Else
'Save it here code'
End If

This will get you the year
CurrentDate = Date
File_Year = DatePart("yyyy",CurrentDate)

You should be able to code it with this info

We bought my son this laptop from Best Buy a couple of years ago.  He didn't really take to it because the track pad is so awful but he was just finally starting to use it (with an USB mouse) when Windows 10 came out.  The OS upgrade was a fiasco.  We almost couldn't get Windows 10 installed because Windows was reporting an issue with the fan.  After a 2 calls with Microsoft support and many hours we finally got the upgrade completed.  However, a few weeks after "upgrading" the operating system the computer stopped working altogether.   The message we get is the following:  The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly Then the system shuts down.  You can hit enter to allow the computer to startup normally.  It will still turn off though after a few minutes.  I just called HP support and was charged $243.00 to ship my computer to them and have this issue resolved. What choice did I have? Otherwise this is simply an$800 paperweight.  I asked if I could just purchase a warranty but apparently my calling support and reporting the issue would prevent me from simply purchasing the extended warranty for this machine.  (Although, I didn't try it).   Frankly, this is highway robbery for a product this age and for the amount of time this computer has been been in operation.  It had only been lightly used 50 or 100 hours at most.  This issue is reported numerous tim... Hi Everyone

It seems this is a common problem with laptops judging by this forum, but I have not found an answer that seems to relate to my problem.

All started when the battery life slowly reduced from around an hour ( a month ago) to 20 minutes, then 5 minutes (a week ago) until now when you turn it on there is nothing on the screen but the power light turns green as does the battery light, it sounds as if it is booting up, then it turns off, the battery light turns orange... then it repeats the cycle and the lights turn green again. We can also here some slight 'clicking' when this happens.

We bought a new power lead about a month ago so I am pretty sure this is still working becuase there is a light on the power supply.

We have also tried removing the battery and just running the laptop from the adapter, but this does nothing.

We also bought a new battery as it seemed to make sense that the battery might be at fault becuase of the reduced battery life... but this has done nothing.

Any ideas would be greatly apreciated as I have a large premier project on the laptop which I need to finish in the next two weeks.

Rob

A:Advent 5302 1 year old laptop, won't boot

Something wrong inside that case. Check your battery connectors very carefully to make sure they are not out of position when the battery is installed. Then check all your wiring under the keyboard... You will have to remove the keyboard, then unplug and reseat every cable.

I have an installation folder on my main machine(Windows 7) with all my software. I have repeatedly run into issues connecting odd devices to my shared folder. This time I have installed Windows 10 Technical Preview (on a different machine) and don't understand why it tells me I can't access my own machine. After all these years, you would think user friendly would be a reality. It seems to be a coin toss as to which machines will connect. I hate never knowing I can access my own machine without issue. Here I am trying to install applications but yet I can't get to my storage location.

What is the secret to sharing your machine, so that anyone on the same network can access shared folders?

Edit: I always turn on "Network Discovery" and "File and Print Sharing".

A:Network connection issues (year after year)

I'm more brutal via the firewall:

set trust localhost and your lan ip's, eg 192.168.0.1/24

then add two rules for only the PRIVATE PROFILE

inbound allow tcp/udp from 192.168.0.1/24 to any for ports 137-139,445
outbound allow tcp/udp from any to 192.168.0.1/24 for ports 137-139,445
I use a much more complicate scheme in reality to enforce known vs unknown devices and to segregate WiFI from wired access, but that's just me.

In services, ensure these are running

Bonjour Service ( mDNSResponder)
fdPHost
Network Connections
Network List Service
Network Location Awareness

I'm not exactly sure what you need but if you're asking how to recover the 360 product key so you can reinstall you might try Belarc:http://www.belarc.com/free_download...It will list most/all? of the product keys associated with your installed software. I've had my Samsung laptop since summer 2012, and I get random BSOD shutdowns. This has happened since I got the computer, basically. I bought it in the US and now live in Hungary and depend on it for my job, so I have not been able to send it away while under warranty.

Anyway, sometimes I get the error more than once a day. Sometimes I don't get it for a week or two. As I said, it seems completely random. More recently, if I close the laptop and put it in my bag, it will have restarted on my walk home. As the thread title says it is most often 0x0000003B, though once is a while it is something like "0x000000D5" (I have to admit I'm not 100% here).

It's frustrating problem, and I'd just resigned myself to it. I only found this forum this evening and performed the SF Diagnostic (attached). I hope this gives you enough information.

A:Random BSOD errors on year-old laptop, usually 0x0000003B

Hello jdenn81.

It is a multifold issue, but the main issue is network related. It is caused by Kaspersky, mainly. Kaspersky uses some Zone Alarm services like True Vector. And Trye Vector hijacks TCP connections; which results in ntework blockage, and causes BSOD.

Code:

It is caused by this element in your system : c:\program files (x86)\checkpoint\zonealarm\vsmon.exe

Alongwith this one, Kaspersky itself is failing, too.

Hello everyone! This is my first time posting on these boards and I was hoping someone might be able to give me some tips for troubleshooting an issue that popped up yesterday with my Alienware laptop. It is 20 days past it's extended 3-year warranty, and Alienware would only refer me to other services to have it looked at (such as a diagnosis for $120+)! I have been building my own systems for years and years, and I'm hoping someone out there might have some insight into ways i can troubleshoot my laptop so I can (hopefully) repair it myself and avoid the overpriced "diagnosis" fees. It will still have sufficient power and it will do a complete shut off(Not a proper shutting off- but instant) I have gone through the power options and nothing there should be causing this. I have also tried updating the drivers. I sadly do not have another battery to test if my battery is the problem. Secondly, while playing games, I believe my laptop is selecting the wrong graphics processor to run off of. It seems to be based off of whether or not the laptop is running off battery or plugged-in, but it also just seems random sometimes. Sometimes I will be getting 5fps on a game, and after unplugging my laptop from the power source it will jump to 60fps. Sometimes it will do the reverse. In both the intel and nvidia control panel, I have selected it to use "high-performance Nvidia processor" for whatever game it is I want to play, but that seems to make no difference. I've also checked the power options. Another problem I'm having is about 50% of the time I start up my laptop, the sound will be an awful mess of crackling. Restarting my sound cards and whatever else I've tried doesn't seem to do anything, except restarting my laptop. Lastly, my internet will drop out every 15-30seconds for a couple seconds. Hi everyone.
When i first bought my laptop i was able to run League of legends max settings with 60 fps stable, but somehow after a couple of months i started to notice that my fps are getting lower and lower,so i tought maybe the game has become more demanding so i tried Cod but the same thing happens.
What i did,i reinstalled my system, updated all my drivers, cleaned up the fan and the cpu from dust, but the thing that seems to be confusing to me is that i feel that my pc isn't running as fast as it can, because when i bought it,when i played anygame my fan would be a bit loud but now it's like im just browsing the net,i think that i somehow changed the CPu settings or something that could have slowed down my system.
My Specs:
4gb Ram
Intel HD Graphics 4000

500 GB HD
Thx in advance, would appreciate any help .

The make/model would help. Do you have latest HD 4000 drivers installed? Sometimes the drivers on the OEM site are best. Other than that, check your power advanced power options especially the CPU max/min.

Hello

Here is the problem. When I start my laptop its not too slow, but still kind of slow; as time goes on it gets slower.

When I did a scan with Super Anti Spyware, it catches a few adware and quarantine/removes it. My laptop comes a bit better but still slow. When I go to rescan it after my laptop has become quite slow, Super Anti Spyware takes forever to initialize a scan. If I restate my lap top and scan it, lo and behold..the adware ends up being detect again.

Here is my Hijack this log...thanks in advance

A:Laptop Running Slower

Hello and welcome to TSF.

I can't see anything towards malware in the logs. Not all sluggishness is caused by malware. Please visit this page and see if any of their suggestions help.

Slow Computer

================

You have LimeWire 5.1.2 installed. This practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Please read this sticky:

Perils of P2P File Sharing

I would strongly urge you to remove it via Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel as suggested in our
NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help page.

Quote:

p2p programs like uTorrent, Bittorrent, LimeWire, Morpheus, etc., as they are a major conduit for malware and a likely source of your current issues. See this link

===============

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs):

Java(TM) 6 Update 13
Java(TM) 6 Update 3

These are all outdated, and security risks by having them installed still. Unfortunately, Java does not uninstall these older versions when you update, nor tell you that you should. Java(TM) 6 Update 15 can be updated from the Java control panel Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now. An update should begin; follow the prompts.

Basically, what the title says. This laptop (about 4 years old) is running so sluggish, it takes it almost 15 minutes to completely start up. If we try to open anything, even just a folder on the Desktop, it slows it down even more. Once it gets warmed up, it's pretty much okay, but this is still quite an inconvenience, and every now and then (in fact, it just did it), there will be a moment or two where it will start just randomly "thinking" as I call it and nearly freeze up the other windows until it's finished.

The laptop doesn't go online but maybe 5 times a year, so I'll be the first to admit its security measures are rather lax. Still, I've got an up-to-date AVG Free on it.

I've done all of the before-posting-a-log steps except the Panda scan (every time I try to either login or re-register, Panda says there's an error and won't proceed). I did a systems cleanup last night and compressed nearly 4 gigs of old files, and that's actually helped quite a bit. It only took it about 5 minutes to fully boot today instead of its normal 15, but I still want to be on the safe side since, as I said before, the security on this computer is really lax since it doesn't go online but a few times a year.

Below and attached are the Deckard logs as instructed. Thank you very much in advance for your time.

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Nothing malicious in the log though you can have the following entry fixed with the HijackThis. It's a registration reminder that's used with various companies.

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entry:

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Close all browsers and windows, click on "fix checked".

Increasing the RAM will greatly improve the speed. 191 MiB is very little for XP.

Hi All,

I've recently got a Sony VAIO E11. I have read the reviews, and the most say it lacks slightly in power compared to other comparable laptops.

However, my local store had them on sale, and for me it will be perfect (I'm taking it away with me for several months with work to watch movies from the hard drive, surf the net and reply to emails etc) and skype home, so this will be fine.

However, I have spent the past day and a half uninstalling all the Sony VAIO Bloatware, and I have noticed an improvement. But there are some things that it continues to lag with.

At the time of writing this, I have google chrome open nothing running in the background apart from Vaio Smart Network, Bluestacks Agent, MSE and Vaio Care (which I can't stop from loading on startup).

It says there are 94 processes, the second I open task manager CPU usage is around 50% and physical memory at 46%.

Within a second the CPU usage drops to around 10% whilst the physical memory stays the same.

Is this normal? With a few applications it seems like it hangs for a few seconds before continuing with its operation... just wondering if there is anything else I can do to clean it up a little?

Edit: Forgot to add, if I am browsing and watching videos on youtube, the CPU usage shoots to between 55% and 70%, sometimes reaching 80% and I hear the fan start to whiz pretty fast! Normal?
Thanks all
Amnesia

A:New Laptop, slower than expected?

Look in "Services" to see if you can disable or start Vaio Care manually.

90 processes sounds extremely high!

Hi, my Lenovo laptop (Inter Core2 Duo CPU @2GHz, 2GB ram) is running a lot slower sometimes. While most of the time (90%) it seems to be running perfectly, especially at start-up it 'freezes' for about 5-15 seconds and does not do anything (though you can do move and click with your mouse).

I have run a full scan with both AVG free anti-virus and Avira free anti-virus. Both found some possibly infected files which (as always) I've moved to quarantine. However it didn't seem to have done a lot.

So I decided to do a HJT scan. I've looked at the log myself and while I'm able to identify most of it I am not an expert on the subject.

Extra info:
- this laptop has fingerprint hard- and software and is attached to a larger flat-screen (the Fn+F5 service I assume).
- I dont use IE, but the Opera browser
- I use iTunes and my iPod a lot, but my iPod is unable to write anything to its HD so I've send it to Apple. I guess it might be related if I had any kind of worm?
- I run XP service pack 3, I don't have a legal key (anymore) so I dont have access to all the security updates

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi. Lately my laptop seems to run slower than it usually does. Firefox takes longer to open, windows live mail takes longer, windows explorer, etc. I'm not sure if I have malware or a virus, but I would appreciate some help from an analyst. I do not have a windows disc. Thanks in advance.

Hi

The fan on my 3 year old HP pavillion laptop was breaking so I recently bought a Packard Bell Easynote LJ61. I bought this particular model because its specs were around the same as my HP DV9000, most of its specs were actually higher. Now, I took this to mean that it would have no problem playing the games I usually play, thinking that they would in fact play better on my new hardware.

However, this isn't the case. The games I play aren't really graphically intensive, most of them running on the source engine (TF2 and L4D for example) but I can barely play L4D on the lowest settings, the frame rate is so bad, and TF2 is only just about playable. CS:S runs fine, but still occasionally suffers from frame rate issues.

I just downloaded Braid too, thinking that it looked like simple graphics that my computer could cope with, but no. It runs very very slowly. Here are the specs for my new Laptop:

Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6001) Service Pack 1 (6001.vistasp1_gdr.080917-1612)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: Packard Bell
System Model: EasyNote LJ61
BIOS: Ver 1.00PARTTBLD
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) X2 Dual-Core QL-64 (2 CPUs), ~2.1GHz
Memory: 2814MB RAM
Page File: 1734MB used, 4123MB available
Windows Dir: C:\Windows
DirectX Version: DirectX 10
DxDiag Version: 6.00.6001.18000 32bit Unicode

Hi Tech Support Guy forum,

I recently built my first PC:

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 58 Stepping 9 (overlcocked to 4.1)
Processor Count: 8
RAM: 16339 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670, -2048 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 122001 MB, Free - 31407 MB; E: Total - 1907726 MB, Free - 1693556 MB;
Motherboard: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC., P8Z77-V PRO
Antivirus: avast! Antivirus, Updated and Enabled
But I have been having major issues with internet speed. I browsed through the forums and, as a result, updated my ethernet adapter(?) with the latest driver for the Intel® 82579 Gigabit Ethernet Controller.

Whether it is connected wirelessly or via ethernet, according to speedtest.net, pre-driver-update I was getting a ping of ~20ms, download speed ~1.6mbps and upload of ~0.5mps. Immediately following the update (and without restarting) download speed jumped to ~9mbps and uploads to 1.5mbps. (This is more in line with my 2005 Dell Inspiron 9300 which is getting around download ~10mbps and upload ~2mbps). But when I switched to wifi, it wouldn't connect and then wouldn't connect again when I switched back to the ethernet. So I restarted the computer and for some reason the speeds have dropped to ~2.5mbps and ~0.6mbps.

What is going on??

I've looked through the forums and have found people with similar issues but still can't get the problem fixed.

Hi, I've recently experienced some issues with my laptop, and it seems like a BSOD while playing Planetside 2 was the cause.

I've check the log viewer, and found an issue with WHEA 17 warnings.

I've followed the guide here Potential Fix For Nvidia Owners with Stop/WHEA Event 17 Errors!

However, it doesn't seem to have resolved the issue.

After the BSOD, I reinstalled the latest NVidia drivers, causing my computer to recheck the Windows Experience index. I previously had a score of 7.1, but after the BSOD, it fell to 6.2

The bottleneck is now my Disk Transfer rate, suggesting an issue with my OCZ Agility3 SSD.

I'm attaching two BSOD reports, (they happened in short succession) and hopefully you guys will be able to help me find the issue with my laptop.
