Unable to change folder icons in (extra) large icons view

Q: Unable to change folder icons in (extra) large icons view

I have two icons that I want to assign to two folders. Unfortunately, something has gone wrong. Let me explain what happened step by step:

1. I have two folders: "A" and "B".
2. I have two icons (.ico files): "A" and "B".
3. I place icon "A" in folder "A" and icon "B" in folder "B".
4. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
5. I notice that I've switched the icons around.
6. I move icon "A" to folder "B" and icon "B" to folder "A".
7. I rename icon "A" to "B" and icon "B" to "A".
8. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
9. I notice that I still get to see the switched-around icons that I assigned in step 4 in the large and extra large icon views. In the smaller views the folder icons are now correct.

Here's what I did to try solve this problem:

- Follow two tutorials: Icon Cache - Rebuild and Default File Associations - Restore in Windows 8 (for .ico files).
- Remove the icon cache using the Disk Cleanup utility.
- Run "sfc /scannow" and "chkdsk /f /r".
- Run CCleaner to cleanup the registry and manually remove some registry keys that I pinpointed by looking for the registry keys that change when I assign an icon to a folder.
- Restart the computer and the "explorer.exe" process.
- Completely remove the two folders, recreate the folders and icons and reassign the icons.
- Change the icon's path (rename the icon or any of the parent folders).

Only the last solution on that list actually 'solved' the problem, which gives you an interesting insight into the problem: it seems as if the switched-around icons are actually 'hard-coded' into the paths on which they existed when they were assigned in step 4. So it doesn't matter what you do: if the icon exists on any of the two paths on which the switched-around icons existed when they were assigned in step 4, and you assign it to a folder, you get to see the switched-around folder icon every time. This path and corresponding icon must be stored somewhere, else this wouldn't even be possible!

I've run out of possible solutions so I know of no other option than to go to these forums.
Hoping for some suggesions... Thanks in advance!
EDIT: SOLVED

It's a bit of an anticlimax but I've solved it. Apparently, removing the icon cache using the Disk Cleanup doesn't really remove the icon cache. So instead I went to:

C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

...and removed the cache manually. That did the job. I'll leave this thread here for people that experience a similar problem in the future.

Hello! So I just signed up here because I'm desperate and don't know what to do.

So basically, I thought the windows 10 default folder icons were pretty bland and ugly so I decided to change them. I read that you could change your default icons by going into to registry and I did just that. Long story short, it didn't work so i deleted the registry folder that I had just created, like they said you could. I was very careful (or so I think) to not touch anything else

But now I'm worried I might have messed up somewhere because now I can't change icons for some of the folders I use. Not sure if this was a problem before that I didn't notice or if it's due to me messing around with things I don't understand.

As things are now, I can change icons for folders that I created but the folders that came with the system (like documents, music, movies, downloads etc) I'm currently unable to change. The thing is, I was able to change the folder icons just a while ago, so I changed them all by right clicking on the folder, choosing properties and then changing the icon, and that worked fine. Then I decided to just use the default icons anyway but I was only able to switch back some of them, and some of those now had the wrong folder icon. My "downloads" folder is just a blank white space for example and I'm unable to change it.

To show an example (I'm sorry the text is in swedish I hope you can somewhat understand):

Hi, whenever you are about to make changes to your registry, back up beforehand. So you now know that and I'll show you an excellent way to rescue yourself in future.

First, do you have System Restore turned on (it's off by default in '10), and do you have any useful restore points?
Second, have you made a system image using Windows Backup and Restore or do you use disk imaging?

Either of those could let you restore your PC to a point before you made these changes- hopefully System Restore would protect enough to reverse your changes.

Please advise.

If you can't do that, and you are convinced there is a problem, then you may have two options, assuming you've not done some damage to the registry.

1. If you create a new user account for test purposes, do your folders look normal?

2. If not, I suggest you do an in-place upgrade repair install.
I will provide the instructions if necessary when you have replied.

Please post back and advise on these points.

I can also tell you how to achieve this quite easily and relatively safely:
Now here's the backup method we strongly recommend:
Creating disk images lets you restore Windows and all your disks and partitions to a previous working state, quickly and probably without technical help.

You can recover from:
- a failed disk drive (restore to a new one)
- ransomware (which encrypts your disk)
- user error
- unrecoverable problems from failed updates to problem programs
- unbootable PC (hardware faults aside)

I've seen multiple posts here and other forums and I have tried all of the steps provided in those posts but it is not resolving my issue. I have the exact same issue as the user in THIS THREAD. I have tried the icon database rebuild (both manually and using the bat file HERE), I have tried ie4uinit.exe - ClearIconCache from command prompt, I have tried Disk Cleanup and checked the box to delete icon cache and I have tried different cache size amounts using the steps HERE. I've tried these all from normal boot and safe mode. I don't know what else to do. The icons that have the problem keep changing every time I restart the PC. I can change them to another icon, rename the icon the shortcut had previously been using and reapply that icon and it shows normal at that time but as soon as I restart the PC, icons change to the smaller size on random shortcuts again. What other steps are there?

Thanks in advance.

A:Multiple icons showing in smallest size when using Extra Large Icons

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Have you tried the batch file in this tutorial:
Folder View Settings - Reset All to Default
It resets the area of the registry that stores some desktop icon info.
warning: read the note about desktoprestore.

You might also want to try combining the batch file for icon cache rebuild with this one... only kill/restart explorer once at the end.

Does this problem happen if you create (& log onto) a new (test) user account?

I've got a little registry file that I run on all my new installs. One thing I been wanting to add to it is the ability to set the Folder View settings to "Large Icons" for "All Folders". The manual way to do this is...

- Open folder
- Right-Click > View > Large Icons
- Tools > Folder Options > View > Apply to Folders

So basically I'm looking for the registry key that I can change to set this via reg file. I've tried digging around in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU & Bags but it looks like those are for all folders. I'm looking for the one specific key/value that windows checks to determine what the folder view should be.

Thanks in advance!

Hello all,

I have been having a seriously frustrating time trying to fix icons displaying in my games folder way too small. Every icon is a custom x256 by x256 icon, and I have seen them all work properly at one point. However, for some reason these icons now appear in their 32x by 32x bit forms, as seen in the attached image.

I have tried everything, including rebuilding and refreshing the icon cache, editing the registry value to x4068 size, only refreshing or rebuilding then restarting, moving the icon files, moving the game shortcuts, so on. All of these shortcuts are offline .exe files, and these icons have taken me a long time to build.

I'm sick and tired of trying to solve it myself, so I've come here for help. The only thing that has worked so far was a Microsoft support file, which fixed the problem until I switched my account to my brothers so he could play, where his icons were broken and when I logged back in so were mine. I haven't been able to find the support file since. I'm very tired of trying to fix this computer, with some V9.com malware stuck in there and rooted so I cannot remove it, broken Windows Photo Viewer that won't even launch, general messes. Do you guys have any clue how I can fix my icons?

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
We might look into this malware issue first,
Post all scan results for review,
Repeat for all users,
Review Jacee?s instructions to run Adwcleaner here post #7,
Ignore the title of the thread,
Instant Savings App
Screen shot of the download button to use for Adwcleaner
You can use these free tools to see if they find anything,
Manually Update them before running full scans,
Try not to use your computer while the scans are running, (one at a time of course).
Uncheck the box to Activate the Free trial from the final install options,
Also use the Custom scan option not the Threat scan,
Select the drive to scan usually C,
If your really infected check the box to scan for Rootkits = this scan option will take several hours to complete,
Never use your machine while scans are running for best results,

First post here on the SevenForums! I'm only saving the tough ones for you guys! Here's the problem:

My client's computer was infected with a virus obtained via Facebook. I removed this and multiple other infections (and I'm pretty thorough with my scanning). She gets it back, starts working on it, and apparently her devices and printers icons are blank. Not missing, like with a "blank page" icon, just... blank. Here's the kicker: it only happens with large and extra large icons. It also happens with normal folder icons. When I change it to medium or lower, they come back. I've tried rebuilding the icon cache database several times, tried sfc /scannow, tried chkdsk, tried uninstalling any recent updates, etc... There have been no hardware changes, the hard drive has been tested as good (no bad sectors), her dual monitors are at a sane resolution, and I'm confident that the viruses has been removed. Trust me -- I've tried all the obvious stuff I can think of. Thanks and Good luck!

Edit: Also, I did about 30 minutes of searching through previous threads. Couldn't find a thing, but I could have missed it...

Well you probably pulled some icon cache files off that were infected but also had the L and XL icons. If sfc didnt work you could try a repair install. It will re-install only the files with different hash marks.

I recently had to do a fresh reinstall of Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit, & am now having problems changing any folder's image in the customary way (Properties >> Customize >> Choose File (to show on this folder icon)). After choosing & opening a file image, I "Apply" & click "OK". However, the selected image does not show up immediately as before (& as it should). I now have to add an empty "TEST" folder to the folder whose image I'm trying to change. Once this "TEST" folder has been added, the new image appears (sometimes I need to re-boot), & I can then delete the empty "TEST" folder. Furthermore, this method can be inconsistent, & a folder may revert to another image (especially in my backup drive). I have attached 2 screenshots of my Folder Options. Any help/recommendations to solve this maddening problem would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

as its an image you want to show in the folder and not actually change the folder icon to a different one.
then rename the image inside the folder to "folder", it will show then ,or at least it should, this is only a workaround im afraid and doesnt really answer your problem, i wonder if rebuilding the icons cache may help

Hi there,
I was just wondering is there anyway to edit the size of the icons more than the 'Extra large Icons' maybe a tool or some manual way ?
Thanks.

A:Bigger than 'Extra large Icons' ?

Hello MoeX,

Very good question and this has baffled me; i have done some research for you.

It appears that a icon's Value (size) are in pixels and range from 0x20 (32) to 0x100 (256) with the default being 0x60 (96).
(32) being the smallest, and (256) the "extra Large".

However Microsoft don't allow bigger then 256 Pixels (Extra Large). Bit of a bummer really.
There 3rd party applications available that allow you to view your photos in a bigger view, but not permanent thumbnails.

I'm sure there is a way to make them bigger if you had edited the registry, but i DO NOT recommend this, unless you are 100% sure what you are doing. and have a Back-up and Restore Point.

Hi there, my problem is when I start up in the morning my icons and gadgets are extra large and I mean large, I solve this by right clicking on desktop, click screen resolution (which is also extra large) then click detect. This opens a normal size window and I am good to go. The display is set at (default) 100% and never changes so that isn't the problem. Also this only happens on a cold start up and not if I reboot

I've been tinkering with the look of my whole system recently. I didn't like the default theme or the folder icons. Now with the help of SevenForums article How to change default folder icons: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...lder-icon.html. It was a very handy article that got me quite far and the same principles applied to Win10 as it did on 7

I've been able to change only a few of the default folders. Now as I'm fairly average at tinkering I've done what the article said on my 10 machine with some success as shown below:

However the live folders do not update despite editing both the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons AND the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons Registry locations. This met with the above result after a restart. Below you can see what I did to the registry:

As you can see from the registry paths I replaced 3, 4, 5 (back), 6 (front) and 162 (full). But 5, 6 and 162 have not updated at all.

So Am I missing something or is there no way to alter these types of folders? Including but not limited to such as the Fonts folder icon, live folders, full folders or folders containing data of one form or another for example:

Any thoughts, help or suggestions would be appreciated, and if this article happens to already exist somewhere I do apologise for cluttering the forum up here as I've not been able to find anything specific so far.

Whenever I view a folder which contains .MP4 (H264) video files in large icon view (shows thumbnails), Windows 7's Explorer crashes. Explorer loads for a few seconds, the green progress bar shows up, and then boom!, Explorer crashes. The thumbnails are not shown before crashing. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I tried setting Folder options to 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' (disables thumbnails) on the same folder with MP4 (H264) video files and Explorer doesn't crash if the MP4 thumbnails aren't shown. I tried testing in other folders containing other video formats (with 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' set to off) like .AVI/Xvid, without an MP4/H264 file, and Windows Explorer shows the thumbnails fine without crashing.

I have not currently experienced problems with other formats, only MP4/H264. The only media players that I have installed are KMPlayer and VLC Media Player which both do not install external codecs, AFAIK. The only external codec I have installed is CoreAVC, but I have been using CoreAVC for months (KMPlayer+CoreAVC is one of the first things I installed in Windows 7) without any problems (this issue just arose a few days ago).

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit.

Note: I prefer a solution that will not end up disabling video thumbnails for MP4 files. I still would like to see MP4 video thumbnails, if possible. If the video files themselves are problematic, I reckon Explorer should not crash and just not show the thumbnails.

Hello! Yes, I'm a newbie and a numpty. This place looks wonderful! I hope you can help me.

Here's what happened: I reinstalled Windows for my sister, who is visually impaired. I just installed Windows XP Pro. Just finished it, and then handed it over to her, to customize her settings. Since she has bad vision, she usually lowers the resolution down to 800x600 and has the font size and title bar sizes larger. Well as soon as I left her alone with her computer, she messed up the windows or icon settings so bad, so everything is HUGE. Everything is so huge, that (what should be) small menus now fill the whole screen. We can't get to the part of the preferences window to change the resolution to something higher, and we can't get to anywhere (that we know of) to change anything back to something resembling normal. Basically, we can't do anything anymore.

I know I can reinstall Windows XP all over again, but since I JUST DID THAT I'd like to avoid having to do it all over again. Is there some way to reset the preferences, without having to reinstall the whole operating system for something so seemingly idiotic? Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

First, please forgive me if I have overlooked this issue in the many searches I have performed thus far.

I would like to know if anyone has a way to change all folder icons within a single folder to one specific icon without performing each one individually. I have over 1,400 folders within a master folder of which I would like to change the child folder icons. I really don't wish to perform this on a folder-by-folder basis.
This is not a Default Folder Icon Change inquiry. This is simply all child folders within a single master folder. I would also be interested if the change would affect all folders of a specific type. Windows 7 does allow the 'setup' of a folder to be distributed (details view with selected details, order, and column size for example) but the icon did not distribute as well.

Any suggestions?

A:Bulk Change All Folder Icons in Single Folder or Folder Type

First, a little bit of theory. What happens when a person sets a custom icon for a folder in Windows 7?
1. Attributes of a Folder change to Read-only (of the folder, NOT content!).
2. A hidden system file created inside that folder, which contains a link to the icon.

Thus, having such file as model, it is possible simply copy it across desired folders, and change attributes of those folders correspondingly.

Secondly, having this idea in my mind, I have put all of my little knowledge of Batch files together and created a script.
BEFORE script is started the following is needed to be done:
Master folder needs to be selected and a custom icon applied to it.

ONLY AFTER THAT
1. Script is placed inside that master folder and launched.
2. First, script checks if hidden system file with custom icon settings is there.
3. Secondly, script looks for subfolders and start changing its attributes.
4. Thirdly, script copies this settings file to all subfolders of current master folder, including all levels of subfolders.

For 100 folders it took about 21 seconds, for 200 folders with different levels of subfolders it took about 57 seconds on my laptop.

I have included remarks (comments) in the source code for better understanding what is going on.

UPDATE: Original file deleted. Script was not meant to be applied to system folders.
Please check a newer FIXED version at this post.

How can i change the icons when seing control panel in Category View !!

These icons !!

Please help !! Thanks !!

A:How to change icons when seing control panel in Category View?

Like this

They are in a Icon folder in the imagere.dll in C:\Windows\System32 & if you are using 64 bit it's in both C:\Windows\System32 & C:\Windows\SysWOW64
1st do this System Restore Point - Create
Make copy's of imagere.dll and put on the desktop and edit the .ico images with something like Gimp each .ico has layers to it edit each layer then you need to Take Ownership Shortcut then Permissions - Allow or Deny Users and Groups and rename the imagere.dll in C:\Windows\System32 & if you are using 64 bit it's in both C:\Windows\System32 & C:\Windows\SysWOW64 to imagere.bak.dll and put the imagere.dll you edited in there and restart your PC

I recently installed Windows 7, and I wanted to see about changing the folder view--not the folder tree, but the way the actual folders appear, specifically for folders containing photos. I have a lot of photos in different folders, and my old computer displayed each folder as a flat, square folder with 4 little preview images of what is in the folder. The new version of Windows displays the folder vertically with the folder open and the documents/photos inside spilling out, I have the view set to "extra large icons" but it is still difficult to tell what is in each folder, I really want to go back to the old way. I looked in the folder options in the control panel but don't see anything for a classic view. Can someone help me with this?

A:How to view classic folder display/icons in Windows 7?

I hope no one can . In windows vista or windows 7 there is no longer the thumbnail preview , but the live folders ... half open with the contents shown .

Probably there is no way to get the option back .

Anybody can share how to increase the size of icons in the details view of folders? there are a couple of howto around but they don't work, any new solution you know?

A:Increase Icons Size in Folder Details View

You can change the icon size to pretty much any size you like using CtrlMouseWheelZoom.exe

It's an AutoHotKey script compiled as an executable and you can download it here:

How to assign browser-like zooming hotkeys for resizing icons on the Desktop and in the Explorer window in Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 | Winaero

In addition to the video shown in the above link here's another video (below) showing the script in action on my machine.

Folder is set to "General Items" and "Details View"

Icon size is remembered on a per folder basis (Folder Template Discovery is off). Not sure what happens if you've got Folder Template Discovery switched on.

Note: CtrlMouseWheelZoom.exe will run until you kill the process via task manager or other method.

How can you remove/delete program icons etc. for one user, not for other.

I have my system set up with TWO users; Administrator and one other 'limited' user [so the kids can be on PC etc.]. When I install programs, icons are on both desktops. If I for instance delete an icon in one user, it also disapears in the other.

I have checked everywhere; For eg. in c:/users/.../desktop folder there are only some files/icons there, but on the desktop its self there are many more, and if I delete an icon, it also dissapears from my admin desktop.

A:ICONS View/Hide program icons for users

I believe you need to move the icons out of C:\Users\Public\Desktop to your account Desktop. That should prevent them from being visible to the limited account.

A:how to change folder icons

The way I did it was by changing the default icons in the imageres and shell32 dll's using Restorator.

If you take ownership of those 2 dll's in system32 you can then replace them with the modified ones, if you upgrade to build 7260 x86 I can give you the dll's to replace the originals, also you will find the the download links for the blue icons in the custom theme thread.

Hello,
I have been running into a interesting issue with my two computers; one has Home Premium 64, and the other is 32.

When I right click on a folder, and click "properties", then go to the "customize" tab to change the folder icon, nothing happens. I have tried using the standard built-in System32.dll icons, as well as custom .ico files that I've downloaded. But it is a hit or miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I thought maybe it was not refreshing immediately. But even when I restart the computer, the old icon is still there.

Any ideas?

You will probably say "Go into Folder Options, go to file types" etc. Well I need a way besides that. Both "File Folder" & "Folder" already have the icon I want set, however my actual folders still have the default Windows folder icon set.

So my question is, how do I change that? I looked in the registry and the right icon is set as the default Icon, yet still....

P.S I don't want to change the icon for just ONE folder, I want it to be system wide, and take effect on all new folders also.

I've done a couple of searches for terms I thought might be relevant to my question but didn't turn up anything that looked helpful. I need Folder List view but badly want to use seven-forums' awesome auto-arrange solution, which won't work with the gutted win7 list view. I've been giving Small Icons a try as the closest thing to list view, but there's one problem with Small Icons that I find to be a deal-breaker: when Small icons has a big enough window to display columns, it doesn't list the items in order all the way down a full column and begin again at the top of the next column, like List view. Instead, Small icons sorts items _across_, in rows, and begins again at the next row.

Unfortunately, although I've given it a good try, I find that it's far more intuitive for my eye to move down a column when dealing with discontinuous units of information (such as file names) than it is to move across rows, so I absolutely must find a way to change this or it's back to List view and (ugh) auto-arrange.

I know the Windows GUI doesn't provide a way to do this, but is it possible with a registry hack? One of my web searches revealed ListView (GUI), which might enable me to use list view in such a way as to prevent auto-arranging, but my scripting ability is way too limited for me to jump into something like that without a couple of vacations' worth of spare time to do lots and lots of learning-curve work.

Thanks much for either good or bad news re the Small-icons issue--... Read more

I have some files and folders on a DVD. I open the DVD on my Windows 7 Home Premium.

1. Please see the attachment named 'File Icon'. Side by side are 2 movie files. Codec of the movie on the left is 'H264-MPEG4 AVC (Part10) (AVC1)'. The icon shows an actual picture of what is in the film which is very helpful to identify the contents without playing the film. The file on the right with the VLC Player icon does not show the content. Codec of this film is 'Flash Video (FLV1)'. Is there any way that I can get this also to show an actual picture from the film instead just the VLC icon?

A:How do I change files and folder icons

Seems to me the file association is the issue, depends upon the file type, i.e. .wmv is associated with Windows Media Player. VLC can play a number of formats. But again, it depends upon the file type/s of your videos. Changing the extension can change what program you'll need but also can kill the ability to view a file. I've had success in changing a few .mp4 files to .flv but VLC still plays it.

Have done a search and could not see a definite answer to this.

I would like to change a couple of individual folder icons in W7. However, I do not want it to effect and be the default icon for the whole system , just an individual icon for one folder alone. The others can just stay as they are now with the standard W7 icon.

Is there any way to do that without causing problems with the default icon used by all other folders.

Any advice appreciated :-)

Hello, I am hoping some of you bright minds will help me figure out a problem I am trying to solve. I am trying to manually edit my folder icons since iconpackager has failed to do so. I have edited the imageres.dll file using reshacker and have replaced the imageres.dlls in both the system32 folder and the systemwow64 folder. I rebooted then proceeded to clear my iconcache as well as deleting thumbs in disk clean up. After rebooting twice, not all of the folder icons appear with the changes I've made....
However, the libraries icon and favorites icon changed just fine.
I edited icons 3,4,5,6 and 162 with reshacker.

I've included an attached snippet from my documents, as you can see, the xwidget folder that is pink changed, but I do not understand why the others look like the default style...

Anyone have any ideas for a solution?
Thanks in advance!

EDIT

So I was able to make them change when I went to control panel > folder options and ticked always show icons, never thumbnails under the view tab... I'll keep this thread up if anyone else might run into the same issue...

Oh boy! More Windows 7 frustrations. Please help.

I have folders containing audio files (mostly audio books) with completely irrelvant and stupid pictures on them which I cannot change!!! There is no customisation tab on the properties menu like Vista.

I now have an audio book based on picking up women with a strange looking woman on it and an audio book on Atheism by Betrand Russell with a big, fat gospel singer on the front because Windows Media Player thinks that it is an album by a singer which it isn't! Even the files have the same incorrect picture which I am helpless to change.

This is so damn dumb! Why can't I change the picture on the front? Am I stuck with it?

Any ideas?

> I use the tried and true OLD explorer view to include the Menu bar.

> Select the desired folder from the left nav pane such as Desktop>Libraries>Pictures.

> Right click on the folder and select Properties.

> Click the Optimize this library for: drop list and select General Items.

> Click Apply then click OK.

> From the Menu bar click View>Choose details... and select (or deselect) items as desired.
I hope that at least gets you started.

Hello and thanks for reading!

We have a multimedia production department, and I'm thinking on a system to mark the "ready for backup" folders. We create one folder for every project (and we can find all related documents, images, etc inside).

We can't change the folder name to mark it because there are some documents inside with absolute paths, this means that if you move or change the name of the folder, you have to relink too many things, and this is not an option.

OK I thought that it would be a good idea to mark the folder as "ready for backup" with a different icon, but it doesn't work on the network folders (only in local). I tried creating and customizing a desktop.ini file inside the folder but it doesn't work in our environment (SBS2008 server + NAS disks and W7/WXP clients).

I wonder if somebody have an idea to do it.

Thanks a lot,

Jud

Hi All,

Wondering if you can offer me some pointers here......

Brink put together an excellent tutorial on this process for Windows 7 (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...tom-icons.html) and with some adaption for the revisions to the Metadata Authoring Wizard contained in the Windows 10 Drivers Kit I have already customised my device icons and even provided some (limited) assistance to others grappling with the task (iPhone shown as Unspecified in Devices and Printers).

All that is, with a couple of pesky exceptions namely the main system icon which remains set at it's somewhat bland generic Windows 10 image and I am at a loss as to how to change it to a more representative custom image....

Secondly, the (ugly) generic icon representing the WiFi Gigabit Router (always shown under the custom name assigned to my network) is inaccessible ("greyed out") such that selecting properties (right click) and bring up the properties dialogue offers the usual "General", "Hardware" and "UPnP" tabs but the "Properties" button on the "Hardware" tab is "greyed out" and thus non of the required Hardware ID's can be accessed.

Returning to the "System" icon customisation I am able to access the Properties and from the Hardware Tab to select "ACPI x64-based PC" from a very comprehensive "System Devices" list and then to select the "Properties" button and from the resulting "... Read more

Customising user folder icons has always been a bit tricky. All user folders apart from the desktop and contacts user folders can be changed via the customize tab in properties when the user folder is accessed from my computer (i.e. not from the desktop).

To customise the desktop and contacts user folders requires a registry change. For Windows 7 this is explained here User Folders - Change Default Icon - Windows 7 Help Forums, and the necessary .reg files are also provided. This method actually worked for me too in Windows 8. However, after the newest updates, the icons I had added this way have disappeared, and so has the customize tab which I had added via the .reg files available on the page mentioned above. Repeating the reg change would not make a difference. The newest updates must have changed something in the Windows 8 registry to that effect (through those updates all other user folders also lost the custom icon I had previously added, but I was able to easily restore them, as the customize tab of these user folders didn't disappear).

Hence my question: how to now change the folder icons for the desktop and contacts user folders in windows 8?

Since all my other user folders are customised in a particular style, leaving the default icon for the desktop and contacts folders looks a bit weird...

I have had this issue for several weeks now & there is very limited info about it on the net, and what I have found about it hasn't resolved the issue.

Basically my external hard drive & my flash drive appear as folder icons in My Computer & not drive icons.

I am guessing that the virus is on my laptop and then transfers itself to any external media I connect to it. Then if I put that same external media into a different PC/laptop, it transfers itself to that PC/laptop too...

Having a problem with System Icons not showing. Been really frustrating trying to resolve. One shows the 'Always show Notification Icons...' greyed out and no icons listed on the Manage notification icons window (you will also notice no system icons are displayed). The other shows all system icons greyed out except for the Clock

Here are the steps I have done:

1) Enabled the 'hidden' Administrator account as seen here:

Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable

2) As this Administrator account, Run several Malware/Virus/Rootkit scans from numerous vendors, no issues found

3) Used the registry options to try to enable notification area settings

How to Enable or Disable Changing "Notification Area Icons" Settings in Windows 7

"Notification Area Icons" Settings - Enable or Disable

4) Used the registry options for each system icon to enable

How to Enable or Disable Windows 7 Notification System Icons

System Icons - Enable or Disable

After all the steps above, including the Malware/Virus scan - still greyed out options.

Does someone have some advice on anything else I can try?

Steve

Hello Steve,

Double check by using step 1 in OPTION ONE of the tutorial below to see if this may the issue instead. It looks closer to how your screenshots look.

Hey everyone! Long time no see!

Okay, so a friend of my dad told him that he used to see the folder icons and labels in the left pane of Outlook 2007 in a bigger font/size before switching to a new computer with Windows 7. Obviously, we all know that upgrading Windows won't change font sizes that are coded into independent programs, so I'm thinking that maybe his old computer was running at a lower resolution. Anywho, my dad's friend asked my dad to ask me this question, and since I don't use Office 2007 anymore, I need to ask you: is there a way to change the size of the folder icons and labels in the left pane of Outlook 2007, without changing the size of anything else?

Thanks for your help!

A:Change size of folder icons and text in Outlook 2007

Not sure about Outlook 2007 as I've been on 2910 for a while now but if you go to the file - options - advanced and check out the options for the navigation pane there should be a font button - change this to something more appropriate to your needs andthis will not alter the other panes

If would also appear that the icons expand to match your font choice

Hi guys,
I've recently attempted to patch my folder icons manually with Resource Hacker. It didn't work, in fact it had worked for some folders but most folders remains the same beige icons.
I got frustrated since every step seems correct, but anyways I decided to revert back to normal, by replacing the custom imageres.dll file with the original to both System32 and SysWOW64 folder, and deleting iconcache.db for it to rebuilt.
Most icons revert back to normal after that, but except the folder icons in the C:\Windows folder, where some of them are still showing up with the custom icon.
I've restarted, tried changing the icon and rebuilt the cache file so many times, I even restored to a backup point before the change is made, but still no luck.
I've taken ownership for the necessary files and have run as admin when necessary.

Any ideas why this is happening? and if anyone can provide some tips to successfully change all folder icons, I will be really appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there,

You might want to consider a System Restore if this is a recent occurrence.

Using the System File Checker (sfc scannow) would be my next suggestion.

One of the most noticeable interface tweaks in Windows 8 is the proliferation of ribbon menus through Windows Explorer. The ribbon interface adds a host of new buttons to the Windows Explorer menu, which makes it quite easy to navigate. Ok that, if you are a customization enthusiasts, you may like to customize the ribbon menu. Here is how to change the icons on the Windows 8 Explorer with a free tool Ribbon Icons Customizer.

Hi,

I have a folder with about 20 images and 20 folders (with avi's, images, and txt files inside).

When I initially check the disk size (while the folder is being viewed in Icons View), the disk size reads 28,415,404,695 bytes.

When I change it to Thumbnail View, the disk size increases to 28,415,444,631 bytes.

I know it's only a 39,936 byte difference but I'm just wondering where this is coming from? When I change it back to Icons View, it still reads 28,415,444,631 bytes. How do you get it back to the original 28,415,404,695 bytes?

Thanks

Hello. This is driving me nutz. I did a reformat recently. I have XP Home. Before I reformated, in view as icons in a folder, I used to see .ico files in the folders as they really were. ie... the actual icon picture. I can see them in thumbnail view, but their real small.

The problem is now is when I open my icon folder and set view as icon, all I see is my .ico files with the icon for my paint progam. Make sense? I hope.

I'm wanting to know how to set it back to see the icons as they really are in the folder itself. Thanks.

hi there

as the title said i have really weird issue here...

the story goes like that...

i have a folder named "Desktop's icons that not in used" since old XP, i used to add all the icons of the progrems that i don't used (and use) often to it so i will find them right away when i need them, even when i format my pc and i backup stuff i also take this folder with me , put it again on the new OS and add each icon to it again when i reinstall it progrem. anyway long story short (and i think it will be right to add Weird xD) when i enter to this folder which i used to put on medium icons all this years it randomly change back to details sizes... mostly when i close other folder that have details sizes before i enter to this one.. but not allways, the windows keep remeber the icons's sizes and even the windows position and size in other folders ...so why only this folder just suddenly stop to remeber it own icon's size? is it corruption registry or something of sort?

i also tried to make a new folder with the same name, cut paste all of the icons into it and the issue still occur, and tried to disable some option that let the system choose what to change in my system's view (from look to performance) if it have hard time to display anything (which is hard for me to believe because i have I7 and Geforce 295 gtx..) and the issue still persist...

i know it just one weird and idiotic issue to make fuss about.. but i want to know if something is wrong with my sy... Read more

Hi all
(I'm italian, excuse me for my bad english).
I have a pc with windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I have a problem with some icons on taskbar: sometimes some applications are displaying the wrong icons, sometimes, as you can see (screenshot), I don't see some icons: sometimes a few are missing (this time I have 8 icons of about 20!).

If I restart my pc, some icons return, but many still missing or are wrong!

So I launched this tool from microsof (I think it rebuilt icon cache, but I'm not sure): In Windows le icone vengono modificate in modo non corretto
but it doesnt' fix the problem, see this screenshot after using this tool from microsoft:

now as you can see some applications are displaying the wrong icons and 2 icons are still missing ...is there any fix for this problem? thanks!!

So I'm trying to add an incon for my folder but all the icons seem to be from XP and small (in the default folder %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll). Tryed to google the location of large icons but all it gives me is links for downloading new icon packs... no thanks.
Please help. Thank you!

A:Where are the large icons?

Hi karelo

The icons in the shell32.dll contain all the sizes from 16x16 to 256x256.You can use the device images scroll bar to see the different sizes available as below.

You can use this- Download IconViewer to open the .dll files to view the icon sizes.

Hope this helps

Probably not what you're looking for but,
you can list desktop icons in list view using file explorer > desktop

Running File Explorer and clicking the UP arrow until you reach the desktop.
Change view mode to list.

Open your Display Properties by right-clicking on the desktop > Properties.

Under the Appearance tab you'll be able to change your font's size. Under Advanced, you'll have a scroll down menu to adjust all the other settings like icons, toolbars, etc.

You will need to install your device drivers (chipset, graphics, audio, etc) .

You may have a disc that contains the Drivers or you can download them from the

Hi, having installed xp again I see the icons on the desktop are bigger than they used to be and the start bar seems about 1/3 or so deeper than before.

Also, some web pages don't all fit on the page as they did before, some only display 2/3 across the page instead of being able to read them right across. Is there some change I can make in windows to fix this. Thanks for reading and in advance for any help offered.

Right click on the desktop > Properties > Settings.
If you can't change the display options there to produce the result you want, have you installed the drivers for your graphics adapter?

I'm not sure if this is the correct section, it seemed like the only one which was relevant to my problem.

In Vista I used to be able to view a folders contents and arrange the files by date modified or name etc by clicking on the field on the title bar (I think it's called title bar). Now in Windows 7 when viewing large icons the title bar is missing and I have to right click in the folder and then choose 'sort by', then select what I wish to sort by. This takes a lot longer than having the title bar there. Is there a way to get the title bar back when viewing by large icons.

Thanks.

A:How do I get the title bar when using large icons

The snipping tool is a wonderful thing. Attaching a picture of what you mean is very helpful.. You can attach a file by using the paper clip after making Snipping tool copy.

For now all I might suggest is to adjust the view settings, or use the Organize option to go to folder options which are both in the "Title Bar" or close anyway
