Context menu item problem and accessing files problem

Q: Context menu item problem and accessing files problem

I have 2 issues. I don't know if they are related somehow.

1. I installed PrivaZer and deleted it. It still shows up on the right click context menu. I tried to reinstall it and deleted it again. I still have that problem. I even restarted the computer. How can I get rid of the entry?

2. When I try to click on/install some downloaded .exe files, I get a message: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file." It hasn't happened with other file types yet.

I scanned for viruses and it didn't find anything. I wasn't sure what to do. Thank you.

A: Context menu item problem and accessing files problem

When you said you installed it then deleted it. Do you mean you uninstalled it ? If you deleted then there are left over to be cleaned, You must uninstall not delete.

Please download: ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows . Right click and run as Admin, locate the extension in question. If you double click it, it will tell you where it is stored on the HD, you can disable first then delete.

Whenever I right-click on a group of files with multiple unrelated extensions -- an MP3, a Word Doc and a DLL, for example -- the top option in the context menu is always the WinRAR feature, "Add to Archive." I would like to change it so the first option is "Open With." How can I bring this about? (I have experimented with Nirsoft's shell manipulation utilities for hours, plus numerous other context-menu editors, and am no closer to the answer.) Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

I'd like to change the name of "Screen resolution" item in right click menu and it works... by the time.
I've been searching for this name whole C: partition and in the registry, and I found it there:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\MuiCache\28\5DB2B7D1], more specifically in the @C:\Windows\System32\display.dll,-4 file as the registry says. So, I double clicked on this value and changed data from "Screen resolution" to just "Resolution" and it works.

Few minutes later I've installed a program, and the name changed itself back to "Screen resolution". I don't remember if it happens during installation or just after but it's not happening in every application I'm installing, like the last one TeamViewer I installed today, and still have "Resolution" as I want.
So, I go back to the registry and want change it to "Resolution" again and what I see is that the catalog 28 has a new name 2B. Everything else is still the same (except the "Resolution" name too ofc)
Anyway, changed the name back to what I want and it works again. Thought it wasn't changed properly by my fault but I pissed me off when I installed graphics driver and Kaspersky and the name was back to original but this time there was not 28 or 2B catalog in the tree but a new one - 4F, next time it was 48 and right now it's 11E. I've tried to kill explorer.exe and check if it a trouble but not. I don't think it's due to shutdown/restart if it was don... Read more

Welcome to the Seven Forums

A lot of times the text is in the .mui of the same .dll, I looked at the Display.dll.mui and as you can see from the screenshot below shows the text you want to change.
Being you're using a 64-bit system you also find that same Display.dll.mui in both C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64

Frequently when using the contextual menu, I experiment the following problem : context menu appears correctly but one element of the context menu sticks on the screen. The only solution I found to make it disappear is to reboot!

I have attached a file to illustrate the problem.
Any hint to solve this annoying problem would be greatly appreciated...

hi and welcome to the forums

there is a program from nirsoft called ShellExView v1.70 - Shell Extensions Manager ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows you will be able to see information on the context menus that should help your problem

64 bit version >>>

executable with un-installer >>>

zip file >>>

Shell Extensions are in-process COM objects which extends the abilities of Windows operating system. Most shell extensions are automatically installed by the operating system, but there are also many other applications that install additional shell extension components. For example: If you install WinZip on your computer, you'll see a special WinZip menu when you right-click on a Zip file. This menu is created by adding a shell extension to the system.
The ShellExView utility displays the details of shell extensions installed on your computer, and allows you to easily disable and enable each shell extension.

ShellExView can be used for solving context-menu problems in Explorer environment. For more information, read the following article: Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers

I found another bug in Windows Seven. I feel like I have more bugs with 7057 and 7068 than I had with 7000 and earlier.

I will probably solve this problem by rebooting, but I never reboot so this is annoying.

If I right click and choose an item in a context menu, the item stays, there is no way to remove it, and it is at the front of all other windows.

It can be removed by starting a game or switching to Win7 Basic, but it reappears as soon as I click an item in context menu.

Note: The problem is not for all context menu. I saw it appears in Explorer, Skype, Setpoint... Not in Firefox and some other programs.

If you right-click on an image in IE7, the context menu lists "e-mail picture" right under "save" as option. I don't use the "e-mail picture" option, and if I mistakenly click on it my computer usually locks up. Is there a way to disable or remove the e-mail picture option?

The only other option I use in that menu is "properties" about 1% of the time.

I have googled this many times over the last year, and have never been able to find a solution. (Although I *did* find some posts of others asking the same question). Any help provided would be much appreciated.

This is kind of baffling to me, but I can't find where to delete a context menu item that appeared when I installed some program on my HTPC (Windows 7 Ultimate x64).
It's not there when I right-click on a file or on a folder. It's there when I right-click the desktop.

It's the last item "Power".

Where in the registry can I delete this?

Hello yomammary, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It looks like you added the desktop context menu from the tutorial below. If so, then using step 2 will remove it.Power - Add Cascading Desktop Context Menu in Windows 8
If not, then export your DesktopBackground key at the registry location below, and upload it here. I'll be happy to take a look at it to see what item needs to be deleted to remove this for you.

Hello TSG!

I would like to add an item to the IE7 right-click context menu. Basically, I need to add a command similar to the one provided by Dr.Web LinkChecker. By right-clicking on any link within a webpage and selecting the item (e.g. "Scan Link"), I'd like to have the link automatically inserted in this online link scanner, in a new window, without losing the original window:

I have a relatively basic knowledge of Script writing and would need help from a skilled member to accomplish and understand this task.

Dr.Web provides this simple registry hack to add its link checker to the context menu:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt\Scan with Dr.Web]

There's an example for adding Google search to the IE context menu. By highlighting any word in a webpage, a new window will open and Google will search for that word automatically and show the results:
Registry hack:

This is a very strange situation: The folder context menu shows multiple instances of VTSync, see screen grab. This is a legitimate program, but really has no place in the context menu. What is so frustrating is that I cannot remove it!

The item seems to get placed in the context menu when the program is installed. Earlier today, I uninstalled the program; removed all entries for it from the registry, then reinstalled the program. Prior to uninstalling, it appeared three times in the context menu, now it appears four times.

I also tried the programs 'Shell Extension View' and 'Shell Menu View', but I could find no reference to VTSync in either.

Can you please offer a suggestion for getting rid of these unwanted entries?

Does anyone know how to add under XP a new item to the context menu that appears in folder view, i.e. when one right-clicks on the background of an opened folder and items like "View", "Arrange icons by", "Refresh", "Customize this folder" etc. appear.

What I would like to do is add a Python script and pass the name of the folder to it.

Thanks a lot!

I have spent enough time googlin, I give up.
My best guess is, this is a recent update change.
I dont recall ever having the option to create a new contact or journal document which is nice, nor do I know what program I may have installed that did this. But I would really like to know, how I can replace new bitmap image option in that space.
I learned that context menu is relevant to in what context we are referring. In this case, right click any blank space either on your desktop or in a folder and hover over new. The option for a new bitmap image does not appear in the New Item toolbar anywhere in the Pictures Library either. I recall being able to right click a blank space in most any folder and create a new .bmp image file.
Where did it go?
Better yet, how do I get it back. mspaint.exe exists where it is supposed to and sfc /scannow yielded no anomalies. Typical online suggestions for how to tweak the registry dont seem to apply to windows 8.1 pro.
Again, I dont think my windows is broken, just changed.

I am trying to add a custom context menu item to windows 7. I want it to show up when I right mouse click inside a folder in windows explorer. I want it to create a folder (pre-named to "temp"). Like the menu to create a new folder but already named. I know this can be done by right clicking and choosing new and then folder but that's not what I want. Can a context menu item be added to the folder view in the registry and then have it create a directory by running cmd.exe. I have tried to do this but it won't work. I added Create Temp to the registry in the proper place and added a sub key "command". in the command I added "cmd.exe /c md temp". This of course didn't work. Can someone familiar with context menus give me a hand on the proper way to write this. Thanks.

Running 64 bit Windows 7 SP1 with all updates

I've been cleaning up my context menu and I have it right where I want it except for one item which I have been unable to find out how to delete regarding text (.txt) files.

I use UltraEdit as my text editor and have set it as the default program to use for text files. When I right click on a text file there are two selections displayed that will open the text document for editing - OPEN and EDIT. If I click on OPEN the default program (UltraEdit) indeed opens with the text file displayed and ready to edit as desired. However if I click on EDIT, Notepad opens with the file displayed and ready to edit. It's no big thing but this will gnaws at me until "I get it the way I want it" and I want the EDIT selection gone.

I can't figure out and haven't found it on the web how to keep EDIT from appearing on the contaxt menu nor can I determine how EDIT is being associated with Notepad. If it insists on being there why isn't it using UltraEdit like I specified...Windows appears to be obfuscating that information but there has to be a way to do this?

I'd appreciate a little help on this one...

My question does not pertain to a custom context menu item; I already know how to customize the icons for those.

Rather, my question is concerning apps that I install which automatically set themselves up in the Windows Explorer context menu via, for example, HKCR\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers.

Today I installed EmEditor and now there is a Windows Context Menu item for it but it doesn't have an icon like the WinZip item, for example.

Sorry if the title is difficult to understand. The issue is unknown and unheard to me, and I simply did not know how else to describe it.

Here's what happens:

- I right click an item or selection to open context menu
- Context menu opens but it is as if it were only a placeholder, greyed out (enlarge the image to see that greyd out menu)

- Moving pointer on top of this greyed out context menu shows it normally and lets me to choose a menu item

- The chosen menu item stays on desktop, on top of everything else

- "Ghost" menu item disappears only when logging out or changing screen resolution
- This happens sometimes immediately after booting up, sometimes it doesnt in days even if the rig is on all the time except hibernating periods. If I temporarily fix the issue with resolution change, it happens as soon as I open any context menu next time.

Thanks. Hopefully somebody has an idea. Rig is the laptop described in my sys specs.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

@="Rename m4a to m4b extensions"

@="cmd.exe /c \"rename *.m4a *.m4b\""

Unfortunately, it is not working in Windows 7 32 or 64 bit. If I open a command prompt in the folder, the rename command works as advertised, but for some reason it won't execute properly from the context menu based on the registry key.

My hard drive failed a few months back. New HDD, reinstalled Windows 7. Reinstalled programs and games. Everything except Windows Media Player was fine.

Windows Media Player (12) was giving me a lot of problems with playlists. Any time I right click an avi, mp3, mp4, mkv, etc the item I'm adding to a playlist is added with some weird name and not the actual, displayed file name from Windows Explorer view of the file.

For example: A file named "s01e01 - TVShowEpisodeName.mp4" is now added to the playlist as "TVShowName.S01E01.HDTV.x264-KILLERS[ettv]" instead of just "s01e01 - TVShowEpisodeName".

Hoping to fix the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling, I uninstalled WMP 12.

When I reinstalled WMP 12, nothing had changed. Worse, now when I right click on a MKV movie file, there is no longer an option to "Add to Windows Media Player list" like I used to have and that I still get with MP4 et all movies.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this context menu issue and/or how to get WMP 12 to only show filenames in playlists? I've been all over Google for weeks now and I can't resolve either of these issues. I'm finally at my wit's end and have to ask someone...

When one right-clicks an empty space in Windows Explorer or on the Desktop, one'll see a sub-menu called 'New' which lets you create a new document in that folder. And it was so on my computer until I did something I do not know what. Now I can't make a new Notepad file: there is no Notepad file in the list of options. This is for XP Pro (I'm at work), but I'm pretty sure the menus are not much different.

You have to show the Menu Bar in an explorer window to get Tools to show up, but click on Tools -> then Folder Options -> then the File Types tab.

Find DVD in the list and select it.

I've been looking for a 7-zip replacement for a while. I've also tried the alpha.

Problem: After extracting files, folders that were unzipped remain locked and require restarting explorer in order to unlock them. Until then they can't be deleted, copied, moved or renamed.

Disabling 7-zip context menu solves the issue but that's not ideal. I've tried a few other programs to replace 7-zip including Peazip but finally settled on Tzip. (It's blocked from connecting to the internet by my firewall).

However there's still a problem with the right click context menu. It displays in Chinese. The GUI and everything else displays in English. I'd like to keep Tzip as it seems to work well but I'd prefer an English context menu.

Context Menu:

I've searched the registry for context menu handlers and found them but can't find any text to change.

I've used Process Hacker to edit Tzip's contextmenu64.dll but again there's no text displayed that can be changed.

I've used a tool to examine both Tzip's executable and contextmenu64.dll and here's the strange thing. Using the search utility in that tool I can find what I'm looking for but I can't pinpoint it.

If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it!

Here's what I find in contextmenu64.dll but how to get it displayed in the context menu?

I've been using 7-zip since early XP days and never had the problem you are seeing. Maybe you could use ShellExView with 7-zip installed to see what is causing the problem and disable just that part?

Maybe it's interaction with some other context hook?

OK. I have an issue here which I have never seen before, on my own main machine which is running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, and I am unable to solve it as yet. I don't know exactly when it occurred, but it was some time today.

The issue is, if I right click on a file in Explorer, then I get the same context menu I would get if I clicked on empty space. If I select the file first, by clicking on it, so that it is highlighted, and then right click, I get the correct context menu.

I have tried a whole lot of tests and settings, but I can't change this behaviour!

Anybody any ideas?

though, I can add any template, they will be present in the new menu, but for bmp, I can delete it, re-add it, it's never showing in the new menu...

can someone help me?

A:context menu -> new -> bitmap problem

Open Registry Editor, Start>Run>type regedit>OK.
Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT in the left pane.
Scroll down to the key .bmp and expand it.
There should be a subkey ShellNew.
By any chance does that key have an * in the name, ShellNew* or a -, ShellNew-?

In case you're unfamiliar working in the Reg Editor, set a new Restore point using the Windows System Restore utility before opening the Editor. Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.
Be careful to not delete or otherwise mess with the reg keys when in the Editor. You're just taking a look.

Hi folks,

Recently had an odd problem pop up with the system (specs available under my profile) and while I've done a lot of tinkering and googling to look for an answer I have yet to nail down anything concrete.

Primarily it seems to revolve around the alt-click context menu. I first noticed this while web browsing (using newest version of Firefox, but problem also manifests in IE). If I should alt-click on a photo I'd like a copy of, the menu comes up just fine. I can click the 'save as' option just fine. However - rather than downloading the file straightaway, or giving me a window to select a download destination perhaps, nothing at all happens. I don't freeze up, I don't crash, I don't blue screen. I can continue browsing as per normal. The download simply doesn't happen. This happens if I attempt a 'Save as' or a 'Save link as'.

The closest thing to my problem I discovered while googling was located here : (Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers). I downloaded the self-contained software mentioned in the article but haven't had any luck resolving the problem with it.

On a possibly related note - I also have occasion to use a piece of software called FileMaker Pro, a database software. (v3 - yes, ancient). What's interesting here is that the software is a self-contained directory. No installation hooks are ever put anywhere else. It's developed a never before seen quirk too now. I've got a weird annoyance.
My W7 install has started acting up (during the past few days).

When I attempt to bring up the Desktop Context menu (on the desktop, or in the folder) it takes between 30s - 60s to respond.
All other folders (that I've checked) seem to react instantly (as expected).

I ran sfc /scannow.
It reported no problems.

Windows Explorer has been a bit twitchy as well (USB HDD disconnection problems).

Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions regarding this problem(s)?

A:Desktop Context Menu Problem

I don't normally recommend this, but you may want to pull up a registry scanner and make sure there are no dead links or bad shortcuts involved.
That would explain the delay in opening as the system tries to verify a bad link.
You could also try looking at the folder with hidden files on to see if anything strange is there.

I added a "print this folder" script to the context menu (via Explorer - tools - folder options - file types etc.), and that worked fine, but now "Search" has become the standard process instead of "Open".

So if I double click on a folder, it does not open, instead the search window opens. Annoying!

Can anyone help me to make "Open" the default again?
Unfortunately it's not possible via the dialogue I have added the script with.

I'm having a problem with winRAR (v 3.91).
The context menu doesn't seem to be working.
Whenever I right click a .rar file, the context menu opens with all the options which should be there, but whenever I choose one of the winRAR features, such as "Extract here" or "extract to..." nothing seems to happen, the context menu just closes, so obviously it registers my click, but nothing happens. When I open the winRAR file though, everything works perfectly fine, and I can extract to wherever I want.

All the other optional features on the context menu seems to work perfectly fine aswell, so it is nothing wrong with the menu itself. ( Scan with AVG etc )

Thanks in advance,

EDIT: I've tried reinstalling, I've tried disabling the shell integration options and then re-enable them. No success so far.

This is to redress the issue:  The existing Answer refers to an external non-Microsoft website for a solution, and also states it doesn't guarantee the solution will work.  This site wants us to download an executable to fix the issue.  Me,
I'd rather poke my own nose into the registry thank you very much.
Well someone please from Microsoft Answer with the necessary changes to the Registry to fix this issue?
Since I know "Microsoft doesn't support the Registry", or at least I've read that too many times to count, and believe it to be true.  I'd just like to add that the
"Include in Library" context menu registry entries must have a vulnerability, since I know I didn't change it; and based on the number of people who in the past have had the issue, so please... Include the necessary
warnings if one must "Microsoft does not support the registry"  "Warning: Modifying they registry may cause your computer to stop working."  and last but not least:  "REGISTRY:  DO NOT ENTER!  HERE BE DRAGONS!"
Truth is I set up my libraries when I first got Windows 7; however, I haven't needed to add any libraries until now.  I finally realized that I could aggregate several folders of some new projects I'm working.

Would someone post the location of the pertinent entries, and what is needed to allow the
"Include in Library" context menu to work?

I modify and clean up the start menu entries on all my machines, and it's an irritation having to construct shortcuts to a program file that you are looking at in Explorer by-

Highlight and copy the folder address from Explorer address bar
Paste into the target shortcut address
Manually type a "\"
Highlight and copy the .exe file name
Paste (append) into the shortcut target address
What I want is a right-click menu item to copy the FULL PATH of the currently selected file to the clipboard. Just like the "Copy link location" menu function in Firefox.
Note this is not the same as the normal "Create Shortcut" option which creates a shortcut file in the current folder, I just want the path text on the clipboard.
Sounds simple but i'm not much of a registry hacker. Any idea how to do this?

I've been having some problems with the trackpad on my laptop (cursor skipping whilst typing) and couldn't remedy it even with updating the drivers.
For some stupid reason I thought I'd try a System Restore and rolled it back about 6 weeks.
I wish I hadn't now.
Firstly I've lost my copy of MS Office, but am trying Open Office instead.
I've had to reinstall a few programs such as iTunes and Chrome.

What's concerning me though is the odd behaviour of the desktop. When I right click on a file to get the context menu, instead a box flashes up for a fraction of a second with a load of messages preceded by an "exclamation point in a yellow triangle" and then vanishes before I can read it, but NO context menu. If I double click on the file then it opens as normal.

This applies to anything on my desktop, video files, music, documents or shortcuts.

Any idea how I can remedy this?

The same thin also happens with some programs if I try to right click on them from the All Programs menu to try and pin them to the start menu. seems to be the same problem.

Any suggestions (other than, don't use System Restore) will be welcome!

A:System restore causing context menu problem on desktop!

Can one use this to add entirely new file extensions in the registry?
For instance, there's a game I play that uses a scripting file (in reality nothing more than a plain text, but it's annoying to always have to go save-->all files--->.sqf)

I want to make it so that I can just spawn a new .sqf from the New menu, is this possible? What I have tried doing:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\ ---> (New Key --> .sqf) ---> (New Key ---> shellnew) --->(String "NullFile")

But nothing is coming up. Is there a way to do this?

A:How do I add a item to the "New" context menu?

Select relevant file extension or create one... ie .bat

Right click file extension and select New Key and name it ShellNew

In that key right click default and create a new string value called
FileName containing a valid path to c:\windows ShellNew\example.bat
NullFile leaving it's value blank.

The FileName method allows you to use a template file which may contain
in the case of a batch file @echo off as the first line.

The NulFile method creates an empty file.

Hope this helps.

Hi all,

I have just installed W7 ultimate 64bit and am having an issue with the context menu.

The problem is that the context menu option to create new files in that folder (word, open office , txt document etc) are only appearing in one part of the folder tree. The folder which is my user name (its 'Dale', and Im an admin) is the only place where those options appear in the right click context menu. It is also the only folder with a padlock on it. So basically, it works in that folder and its subfolders , but nowhere else.

When I right click on any folder in any other drive ( I have various attached via sata to the MB) on my PC and get the context menu, I get only the option to create a new 'folder'.

I think its something to do with permissions as I was messing about just now and got one folder to present those options, but I dont really know what Im doing.

I installed classic XP shell originally, but uninstalled it after finding this problem. I dont think its related though as I still have the issue.

Thanks for any help.

A:New files option not in context menu

Just found there are some other folders round the place that I have the new files options in the context menu , but I dont see the ryme or reason too it.

Also, just discovered I can get this functionality by 'sharing' the folder with my user name. Is it a good way to go about it just to just share all the folder paths I would like this functionality in?

I have several context menu options from various programs (WinRAR, 7zip, VLC, Winamp, etc... ) and I'd like to put them in my own order. The order they are in by default seems arbitrary. Any programs or ways to do this?

A:Any way to reorder the context menu for files/folders?

The order is not as arbitrary as it may appear. AppID/GUID determines sort order, followed by alpha sort within each hierarchy. ExtremeTech has a good reference under Hacking The Context Menu.

Unless you are cranked to 11 at all times, I would not play with this too much.

I would like to have a list of the Recycle Bin's contents in the right-click context menu (of the recycle bin.) I found the registry key for the Recycle Bin's context menu, but I have no idea how to 'reference' the files that are in the bin so as to list them in the menu.

I know it's possible thanks to a program called KO Approach.

There are at least 2 reasons why I don't want to just use that program:The context menu it provides is invoked by holding the left mouse button & I want this added to the existing right-click menu.
I think this is such a small thing, that installing yet another little program doesn't seem worth it.

Though this is small it would mean: right-clicking the recycle bin > seeing what's in there > clicking 'empty recycle bin'Instead of:right-clicking the recycle bin > hovering over 'empty recycle bin' > wondering/worrying what's in there > opening the folder > then finally clicking 'empty recycle bin'

P.S. This is my first post (on any forum, ever) so if I did something wrong, be gentle.

If I right-click the Excel link in my windows start menu, the context menu displays several pinned excel files that I commonly use. I need to change the properties (file location) in one of these pinned links. I recall creating some desktop short cuts and then moving them to a specific shell folder like shell:appsfolder, but cannot locate the correct folder or find original instructions I followed to create these links. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Note: This appears similar to Recent files....but they are in fact pinned!

I am having an issue where my right click / context menu is automatically closing after being opened while using Windows 8.1 x64 Professional, but only on one of my machines currently running Windows 8.

I can reproduce the issue relatively reliably (maybe 50-70% of the time) on the problem machine by taking these steps:

1. Select an item (file, directory, etc) inside Windows Explorer
2. Left click another item, selecting it
3. Very quickly (very small fraction of second, but clearly after the left click has been released), right click, opening the Context Menu
4. The context menu will close automatically after another fraction of a second

Another item I noticed is that the ribbon will update to match the new file type (assuming a new file type is selected) at the same time that the context menu is closed.

I have all non-windows shell extensions disabled through nirsoft's shellexview (including the explorer.exe or full windows restart after making changes), and I am thoroughly stumped as to why this might be happening. Any other suggestions / thoughts? Is there possibly something invalid with my HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT keys which may be causing this?

Hello everyone,

First of all allow me to introduce myself briefly, I'm DiaborMagics, new to this forum. I'm Dutch and my computer's language is set to Dutch, so if I mistranslate anything, I apologize in advance.

The thing I would like some help with is the following: I just tried to open a number of .png files at once, by selecting them all and hitting 'enter', but then a program pops up that asks me how I want to print the files. Confused I right-clicked and saw that indeed the default was set to 'print' (afdrukken in Dutch). Selecting only one of these files, however, defaults to my program of choice: Snagit Editor. By selecting multiple files I was unable to choose 'open with...' to change the standard program and seeing as my default program is already the one I want, that should not be a problem.

Obviously I wanted to open all of these files and I did not want to print them. I don't even have a printer....
So how do I stop multiple .png files from defaulting to 'print'? I did not check what happens with other files besides .jpg files and those work fine. They default to 'open', as they should.

If anyone can provide me with any insight or solutions to my problem, that'd be a big help now and in the future; I'm working with .png files more and more.

Thanks in advance,

To set WMP as your default player, either:
-right-click the file, and go to "Open With"->"Choose default program". Select WMP or browse for it, if it's not there. OR
-open the start menu and look or type in "default programs" (w/o the quotes) and open it. Select the file extension you'd like WMP to open by default.

Note that you have do the steps again for each file extension you'd like WMP to open by default.

As for the context menu, it looks normal.

I am trying to remove several context menu items for some file types AND folders. I've noticed that the right-click context menus differ depending on the file type, and also the folder type, depending on what type of files are in the folder. I've search far and wide, and have not been able to find software that will let me edit the menus. I've tried ShellExView and ShellMenuView but they don't list any of the menu items I'm looking for. Often times when I want to rename a file, I hit "delete" by mistake. I was wondering if there is a way to move the delete option up, so that it is not next to rename? I have tried a few context menu editors, but they do not seem to have rename or delete as options to play around with. Please see attached.

I know there's a context menu entry to show/hide hidden files. But is there one that makes/unmakes the file/folder hidden? Going to a file/folder's properties just to change it is a bit of a hassle (esp. on shortcut files).

Just in case I wasn't clear (or my wording was a bit confusing), example:
Let's call the context menu I'm asking for "change visibility".
1) Right-click on non-hidden file -> change visibility = file becomes hidden, but folder options remain as is (whether it shows or doesn't show hidden files).
2) Right-click on hidden file -> change visibility = file becomes shown (not hidden), but folder options is still unaffected.

I routinely back up some files on a second XP system located on my LAN. Some of these files are located in my wife's 'Documents' directory, which I routinely access on my main system. I back up manually, via WIndows Explorer, copying each of the directories from my main XP system using the mouse and right click, then pasting it into a dated directory on the second system. This works fine if I'm doing it from my main system, but if I do it from the second (backup) system, I can only access directories not located under my wife's 'Documents' directory. When I try to do that, I get the popup 'Access Denied'. This happens despite the fact that her Documents directory is set to share via network, and the Windows firewall is set to allow the folder to be shared on the network. I checked and confirmed these setting via (right-click) on Properties > Sharing via Windows Explorer.

When I still couldn't access the directory from the second PC, I disabled the 'Read Only' setting at the General tab at Properties, hoping that might help. When I applied that change (to all subdirectories as well), the OS spent several minutes setting the change down the line, then left the 'Read Only' box unchecked. But when I exited Properties and then re-entered it, the box was checked again. This is only a minor nuisance, but if someone can explain this to me, I'd appreciate it. I was infected by Ransom Virus few weeks ago but i cleaned it. It is possible that I was infected by some other viruses during that time. But currently my system is clean as per SuperAntiVirus, Hitman Pro, McAfee, ActiveScan from Panda and many other virus scanners/tools including Rogue Killer, TDSS Killer etc.
Unfortunately, when I right click on a file or a folder on desktop or in Explorer, I receive the following error msg.
There was a problem starting
A dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed.
and context menu opens.
I believe that his is a remnant of a virus. Interestingly, right click on Desktop or sys folder like Libraries or Computer does not produce the error.
Earlier Hitman Pro had detected wow.dll as a trojan in Windows\Temp\sbsbprt folder (not in path mentioned in error msg) . When i tried to see in Temp folder, i could not see sbsbprt folder or wow.dll. I restarted in safe mode and shredded Temp folder with McAfee and then Hitman could not find wow.dll anymore.
I think that a virus changed Right Click functionality (like in a game where right click fires secondary weapon) by running a script/exe. I cannot find any help to reconfigure right click to its normal behaviour.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am using Windows XP Pro, all updates applied.

In "Regional and Language Options", in the Regional Options tab, under "Standards and formats" I have "English (United Kingdom)".

In the Advanced tab under "Language for non-Unicode programs" I also have "English (United Kingdom)".

I regularly use a utility that compares discs, folders and files and gives a side-by-side report of the differences. This program is called "Beyond Compare 2" (BC2). This program is non-Unicode and does not work well with file names containing Thai characters, or files containing Thai characters.

I investigated the problem and have installed Microsoft's "AppLocale" program:

The AppLocale utility allows users to run a legacy application without changing to the code-page/system locale needed by that particular application. AppLocale emulates the code-page required by that legacy application without changing the machine's system locale. This emulation is only applied to the application that has been chosen during the AppLocale configuration wizard.Click to expand...

I installed and ran AppLocale and specified that I wanted BC2 to use the Thai locale. AppLocale then produced a shortcut which worked perfectly. I could start BC2 using this shortcut and it correctly compared two folders containing files with Thai file names and containing Thai characters.

I just built a new Vista PC. I was able to access and even see in network panel my win2k pc from the new pc. However in the beginning I could access and see it then after a time it would disappear and even attempting to map the drives would fail with an error saying it was no longer available despite the pc still being on and nothing having changed between the two. I could access and can still access the new pc from the win2k pc flawlessly at any given time no matter how long between times attempting to access. The problem connecting to the win2k pc from the new pc has degraded and now I can't access the old pc at all nore even see it in network panel even when both were freshly powered up. Attempts to access the pc manyually by typing the name of the old pc in the location text box "\\nameofpc\" i get a popup saying windows cannot access \\nameofpc\ etc and has a diagnose and cancel button. Pressing diagnose results in windows found an error that can't be fixed automatically. However I was able to access the win2k pc for a few days when it 1st no longer would show up in the network panel by using this method. I haven't done anything to change either pc since when it worked for the most part to now where it doesn't work at all. I am still able to flawlessly access the new pc with the win2k pc but not access the win2k pc with the new one.

I visit these forums alot, and ran a search just incase, yet was not able to find this anywhere. It's something I thought could be useful for some people

You know how you can shift+right click on items in windows explorer to get added options? Well, the same command works on jump lists, except with some useful added functionality.

I remember at least one forum member having mentioned that the reason they misses quicklaunch is that they could drag and drop files onto an app to open said files with said app. Well, although this doesn't completely cover that problem, as you have to use the keyboard, it sure does help.

Lets say you have 10 images you want to edit in a program, but you dont feel like opening up the program and then searching for the files, because you already have the folder with the files open in explorer. Normally, if you right click on the item in a jumplist that represents the application itself, you only get a tiny context menu with 3 or four options. I was messing around and saw that if you hold shift while you right click, you will get a full host of options like one might when browsing in windows explorer.

So if I want to edit those ten images in GIMP for example, I can select the images, right click and press copy, open the jumplist for GIMP, and hold down on shift while I right click on the GIMP program in the jumplist. Now the right click menu gives me the option to Paste, so I select paste, and voila, my 10 images open in GIMP. Hopefully t... Read more

I've got an external hard drive (actually just an internal drive in an enclosure connected via usb) that is giving me a problem lately. When I plug it into the computer it shows up and gives me the autoplay dialog. It shows up in Windows Explorer and allows me to look at the properties. It shows me the directory tree and names of files. I've even been able to click on a small file and drag/move it onto my internal hard drive successfully. But with folders containing 40gb of videos or lots of photos Windows Explorer freezes. Both of my photo viewing applications freeze too if I use them to view the files. I need to loolk at these files to see if I need any of them and I need to save the videos!

I tried booting into safe mode but I can't do that because my mouse won't work (its a usb mouse) - this is probably a different issue though.

I turned off indexing for this drive through the properties dialog. I also uninstalled the usb driver for it, plugged it in and let it reinstall a usb driver. I can't make this drive allow me to view and/or move all of the files! What could be the problem?

A:Problem With Hard Drive Freezing When Accessing Files

My first point of suspicion will be the enclosure you are using.

Try connecting your HDD internally and see whether you can access everything normally..

Now a question that should embarrass you: Is it difficult for you to mention the manufacturer, Model Number, Capacity of the internal HDD and the manufacturer and model of the enclosure? When you have a problem with a device you should always furnish complete details of the devices involved - not just my PC, my external drive, my enclosure.
