A: Windows 8 is an extraordinarily large piece of poo

Hi there
As a new member you are showing an awful lot of arrogance here -- in any case all programs are really applications so there's nothing wrong in calling a program an application -- can't see what the problem is.

You also mention Windows 8 which is now obsolete and has been replaced by Windows 8.1 which is a lot better and if you don't like the metro desktop you NEVER have to see it.

Apart from missing the standard start menu - which you can easily replace either by a 3rd party (usually free) application or custom toolbars or both you can make it look and behave identically to W7 which certainly was regarded as a good OS.

Now if you were referring to the ways Ms is choosing to implement updates etc (via the store rather than full ISO's) then your post might havce some merit - otherwise it simply adds totally NOTHING and doesn't enhance your reputation ONE IOTA. If you REALLY hate W8 so much just disappear and let others get on sensibly on this Forum.

I am currently running Windows 2000 service pack 4. The computer is not mine, but my families comp and I believe one of them clicked on something they should not have. Anyways, the comp will boot fine, but when it comes to the Window's logon menu the computer begins to slow down considerably. It takes almost 20 mins to load the desktop and when you click on something it will take up to a minute to load it, but all you get is an outline of the application and you are not able to really navigate anywhere. Basically, everything loads very, very slow and will not load when you click on it. Is there anything I can do just even to recover files?

As the title suggests, my computer running XP 32-bit is extremely slow. I have tried everything in the "slow computer? it may not be malware" section and nothing has helped. I recently reconnected to the internet, and it is slower even than it was before. Although I have not received any specific error messages, it should be noted that MBAM, BitDefender, and the computer itself will not update. That's where the error messages come in. I think I'm infected with something but I'm not sure, and I'm not sure what to do or where to go at this point. Any help would be so very appreciated!

For the past few months, my system has taken an inordinately long time to boot up, maybe three or four times longer than normal. It usually hangs on the desktop screen and lags for a few minutes before other programs start running. It also seems to take much longer than normal installing and uninstalling programs, as well as updating programs. I've run many malware and virus scans, and nothing has turned up. I also ran a hijackthis log, and many entries ended with (file missing). I'm very unsure of what to do, or even what the problem exactly could be.

Thanks in advance,

I bought this computer and from the getgo it was running extremely slow and always hesitates, and pages take forever to load, whether I try to open wordpad or go online.  Online, it is always freezing, and I have to keep on rebooting every 5 or 10 minutes with the power button.  Cntr, alt, delete won't even do it because it is conpletely frozen. The only thing I loaded onto it was Superantispyware hoping that would help and it has not. I returned the computer to best buy and they gave me another one. It is doing the same thing. If this can be fixed I would like to do so, otherwise I need to return it. Please hurry as I only have 2 days left to my 2-weeks to return it. Thank you.

A:Brand new computer running extraordinarily slow both online ...

I couldn't find an edit button, but wanted to add that I tried to call HP and was told that they charge for tech support for "slow" and "freezing."  I just bought the thing.  If this is what HP has become, well, this was my 3rd HP over time.  It would be my last unless they support their products.

Hello folks,

I plan to upgrade to windows 10 from Windows 7 Home premium. My Windows 7 installation got corrupted and gave constant BSOD that I could not really work. I tried system restore but as per Murphy's law, nothing is going smooth. I have been trying for 2 days and all sorts of errors during system restore. As a final attempt, I cloned my old hard drive and thought of upgrading on that (Same windows 7 installation, old drive was before I upgraded).

Now I notice that even this installation has some issues, primarily it has issues with windows update. I am trying various things to fix it but it isn't getting fixed. Meanwhile, I am using WSUS offline updates to apply missing updates.

My question is, if I decide to upgrade on this installation, do you expect me to get any errors? If my understanding is correct, windows 7 installation is needed for licensing issues. I tried clean install and it doesn't activate. MS support was far from useful. Hence all trouble.

How do you folks recommend to proceed?

Many thanks in advance.

A:Upgrade from windows 7 - Activation piece

Hi, as you have a valid Win 7 license, and MS relented and decided to allow people to enter qualifying license codes, you should be able to do a clean install of Win 10 and use your Win 7 key to activate it.

I understand you said you have tried this - what went wrong?

It's also of course true you can upgrade from a Win 7 installation. Naturally that will retain most of what you have installed, albeit carrying a risk of conflicting programs.

So, if you can't clean install Win 10 now, but would be happy with a clean install, then if you have Win 7 installation media, you could start from that.

I don't understand it. It won't let me drag files onto my play lists, I have to click file, open, and if I select more than one file they could go into different folders and I have no idea where some of them are. Why can't it be like the older versions where you see every song on the play list and they aren't all in dumb folders. I put it in list view and it didn't change anything. I still can't drag and drop files. I am so mad right now I could break something. I really hate Itunes. It is so stupid.

Have tried to find somewhere to reduce the size to normal, but unsuccessful.

I will shortly need to move a large number (20,000) very large (20-30Mb) image files and associated tiny xmp sidecar files from one hard drive to another.

MS file explorer will make a meal of this so any suggestions for alternatives please? I have several folders each containing many thousands of files as above so moving a folder en-bloc is an option rather than file by file?

A:moving large number of large files to new drive

Simply drag and drop the folder(s).

Might want to do a copy first, verify that everything did indeed get copied, and then delete the originals.

First post here on the SevenForums! I'm only saving the tough ones for you guys! Here's the problem:

My client's computer was infected with a virus obtained via Facebook. I removed this and multiple other infections (and I'm pretty thorough with my scanning). She gets it back, starts working on it, and apparently her devices and printers icons are blank. Not missing, like with a "blank page" icon, just... blank. Here's the kicker: it only happens with large and extra large icons. It also happens with normal folder icons. When I change it to medium or lower, they come back. I've tried rebuilding the icon cache database several times, tried sfc /scannow, tried chkdsk, tried uninstalling any recent updates, etc... There have been no hardware changes, the hard drive has been tested as good (no bad sectors), her dual monitors are at a sane resolution, and I'm confident that the viruses has been removed. Trust me -- I've tried all the obvious stuff I can think of. Thanks and Good luck!

Edit: Also, I did about 30 minutes of searching through previous threads. Couldn't find a thing, but I could have missed it...

Well you probably pulled some icon cache files off that were infected but also had the L and XL icons. If sfc didnt work you could try a repair install. It will re-install only the files with different hash marks.

Last week I had SaveNow, Relevant Knowledge, NewDot.Net and Brave Sentry get onto my PC. After rebooting into Safe Mode, I was sucessful in cleaning pretty much everything with a combination of AVG Spyware and SpyBot.

I have this new screensaver(yes got it last week, some coincidence) and whenever it kicks in, my Trend MicroPCillin Real-Time protection thingie sends a popup referencing this file:

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{49238636-6A46-4DA8-92A1-5A5DA2BD9A93}\RP302\A0056565.exe

I think it's some residue from SaveNow but when I scan my system now, it doesn't detect any malware. Is there a way I can clean this annoying file without uninstalling my nifty new screensaver?

Sorry if this is the wrong place. I wasn't sure where to put this.

I am looking for a covert program that will snap pics with my web cam at specified intervals so I can see what is happening in my computer room while I am not around. I have birds in the same room and my son uses my computer. I want to know how much he may be abusing the birds because of the noise they make or if he is just covering them up shortly after we leave to make them be quiet, etc. I have that Timershot Powertoy for Windows, but it leaves an icon in the tray. The last time I left it running, my son saw it running within about 5 minutes and shut it down. So, I want something that runs in the background and is free preferably.

A:Looking for a Piece of Software

I'm not an expert with webcams etc so can't really help you there. However, I'm just wondering if you're maybe taking the wrong approach here. Obviously I have no idea about your relationship with your son, but it seems to me that perhaps you need to sit down and talk. While he may be guilty (of something), you are proposing to spy on him. To me that does not bode well for your relationship.

Hope that doesn't sound like I'm preaching - I just wanted to let you know my thoughts.

I'll save the whole anger-venting thing for last. First, the problem(1), my PC specs(2) and what I've done so far(3).

(1)The PROBLEM: I am seriously pissed off. My computer is restarting randomly-well, maybe not randomly, it has a tendency to restart when I am running a full system scan in almost any anti-spyware program. I get stupid pop-ups when I am on the internet, even though I have Google toolbar popup blocker.

My D drive consists mostly of music.

Suggestions made that didn't work:

Now, to entertain myself even more, when my computer STILL restarts, I get a happy little blue screen telling me that my hard-earned PC has\is a failure. What a shot to the self esteem. Firewall? Security software? Use something like the free download of Network Magic to examine your setup. Usually it is something you missed. Netgear is quality, and relatively easy compared to many others.
Look very carefully at all the steps that Netgear lists in the setup. Be sure you understand them and you haven't missed something that seems minor but is really essential.
It is difficult for us to help on a network installation without seeing it. There are so very many potential issues.

Hi there
I am new here and hoping for help with my PC.
A couple of weeks ago we starting getting very annoying popups on our PC that the AV on PC mechanic or Spysweeper would not stop.
I uninstalled both of these and instead put on a new Kaspersky suite, it straight away found several running programs and got rid of them.
The problem is that it does keep on picking up a trojan every now and again and there are also a lot of security warnings for things trying to access the internet however it is impossible to know what these programs are due to them just showing as numbers and letters!
I was advised to download a program called Vundofix, i did and ran this, it did find some more things however there is 1 resilient program that no matter how many times Vundofix picks it up and says it has dealt with it it keeps coming back. It is called ddabc.dll.
From looking through other posts people post there log from hijackthis, I have included mine below.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as we are reluctant to use the PC for internet banking etc.
Thanks in advance!

Some time ago, I stumbled upon a piece of software that could automatically log in at start-up, and then log the computer. The purpose of this piece of software is to allow the computer to start up and load the different progresses while the computer is locked. I have searched for it but was unable to find it, so now I wondered if anybody knows it?

A:Searching for a certain piece of Log-in software

No but I have considered it. The reason why I don't want to use it is that, it is too easy to lock in through the alternate boot modes

Never liked facebook in the first place, started using it cuz people at work use it.

All started well..

Now, what ever browser its in, the facebook screen freezes, I can switch tabs and do anything else on those, but the facebook screen is un-usable, can't type in any box or press any links, they don't light up or anything.

Out of no where, it will work and just freeze again.

Not only that, the chat box stopped working properly, like I'd have to refresh the page for it to update what was said in it.

Using chrome, tried firefox, cleared cookies and such.

Sounds like a Flash plugin issue, especially since you say it doesn't happen in IE (which uses its own version of Flash based on ActiveX).

Since a new update to Flash was just released anyway, try installing the latest plugin version. Does that fix the problem?

First of all you need to step back and cool off. This is a family forum and language like that is inappropriate, even if you use asteriks.

The standard instructions we give to remove viruses are below, but from the sounds of it, you may be better off wiping your drive clean and starting fresh.

If you have a virus/spyware infection we recommend that you read this article?"NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help"; follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information; as instructed, in theHiJackThis Log Help Forum.
(Simply, click on the coloured links to be re-directed.)

Please ensure that you create a new thread in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum; not back here in this one.

When carrying outThe 5 Steps, if you cannot complete any of them for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed.
However,it is extremely important to make mention of the fact that you could not complete any of the steps in your post toThe HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you with other workarounds.

Once done, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will answer your request as soon as they can.

After your system has been verified as clean, if your are still experiencing those problems come back here and we will assist you further.

I'm looking for some software that will allow some one to save a file to a location temporarily then maybe 5-10 min afterwards delete it.

My circumstance. I have a computer setup up where I work to allow people to apply for jobs. We're doing this a bit differently by having them download a PDF app, fill it out, then upload that to our web based recruiting service (Free Recruiting Software for Applicant Tracking and Management | SmartRecruiters). The problem we're faced with is that there will be multiple applications on the desktop with the candidates info saved in it.

What are my options?

One thing I thought about was something that was set to delete any file older than let's say 10-20 min.

Ok, well i got my Dell Deminsion 2400 in october of 2003, iv been haveing trouble with it ever since. I have been illeagally downloading music, i called dell told me to restore my harddrive, so then i got rid of the illegal downloading and the problem of it being slow and sluggish persisted. So I call the horrbible technical support at dell....again.... this time I ask for a new system, and of course this happend in a time period of 5 months. so they tell me i dont need one and i have to restore my hard drive yet again, then about 3 months down the road, from the last time i restored it, it was doing the same damn thing, i had all the virus protection everything, so once again called dell. At this point i was like screw it i want a new system, so the guy said that next time that this happens i can have a new one. Instead, they sent someone out to look at it. They gave me a new hard drive(40gb), I installed it everything. Ok well then about a year later yesterday it happend again. I was upgrading the harddrive to a 160, because my dad who works with computers said that you should try installing a new harddrive see where i go from there, so i do that and it tells me EVERYTHING ON THIS DRIVE WILL BE ERASED AND PUT ONTO THE NEW HARDDRIVE!!!!!! so i click ok thinking that everything will be copied to the new Seagate 160 GB. Have another thread about this below, but I figure it's got to be a fried piece of hardware at this point and nothing that can be fixed with any sort of voodoo on my end.

Symptoms:
I have no sound even though all drivers are installed and device manager says everything is OK with my card. I get that loud buzzing feedback sound when I remove/insert the speaker cable into the sound card and the system is off...so it's getting juice and sending that feedback up to the speakers...just won't play any sounds.

2) I have no wireless connectivity. Under device manager for my Belkin 54mbps wireless adapter, there's a yellow !...when you click on it it states that "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use (Code 12). If you want to use this device, you will need to disable on eo fthe other devices on this system. I've presently got a cat-5 cable running between my laptop and my desktop, and that gets the desktop (the problem computer) online.

3) Whenever I reboot, right after the POST, I get 2 errors, one below the other, that say the exact same thing "04/00/00: Error allocating Mem BAR for PCI device"
I figure my sound card is fried for sure. But I can't figure out what the issue is that's preventing the wireless network from working. Has my RAM stick gone bad? Is the power supply not providing enough juice? Is the adapter itself bad? My mother board decided to pack it in?

A:Need to know what piece of hardware is bad/what to purchase

That indicates to me that either one of your PCI cards is faulty, or that the PCI bus controller itself is faulty.

Or that the motherboard chipset drivers need renewing, however you suggest that you have done that. Did you specifically do the chipset drivers or just the Audio?

If you have renewed all motherboard drivers, then try taking one PCI card at a time out to determine which is faulty. If it still happens with all drivers renewed and all PCI cards out, then it could be a motherboard (PCI controller) failure. New motherboard, complete reinstall of everything.

I first posted this in the Windows 7 forum, but it appears that this is a hardware issue. When I turn on my computer one of three things happens:
Nothing. Lights come on, fans come on, but the BIOS doesn't even post or get to the splash screen.
Bios loads, but Windows 7 doesn't load.
Bios and Windows 7 loads, but is extremely sluggish.
However, in the last few hours, it's only been the first selection that's been happening. I can hear the optical drive spinning and everything else, but no BIOS.

Is it a bad hard drive? bad memory? power supply? I'm totally stumped. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Which piece of hardware is broken?

Here are the specs:

Power Supply: NZXT PP-600 600W
Motherboard: ASUS M2N-SLI
HDD: Samsung 1 TB

Okay about 3 months ago I started getting suspicious activity on my computer. A hidden file called "ljasvmibvb.tmp" showed up on my desktop and I tried scanning it with 3 programs "Microsoft Security Essentials" "TrojanHunter" & "Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" and nothing showed. About a week or two later my computer became actively infected and after start-up once I was logged in an "anti-virus" program started popping up messages saying that I was infected and it was scanning and If I wanted to download some software, which of course I didn't do.

I started getting messages popping up saying "Application cannot be executed the file mpcmdrun.exe is infected, do you want to activate your antivirus software?". The message would pop up everytime I tried to run any program other than my web browser and saying that it was infected and wouldn't run. After another week or so the virus dissapeared and I thought I was clean or it was done doing what it was going to do.

Given another 2-4weeks my system became infected with the same problem again, my anti-virus showed up with things "Trojan.Dropper" & "Trojan.Generic" on it and I cleanned them off. The same messages started popping up again and they hung around for longer. They often started appearing straight after logging in and stayed active on my system for around half an hour before disappearing again. The virus changed a few of my internet s... Read more

I'm cleaning up a PC but have come across some spyware that I cannot remove. Spysweeper and Spybot no longer trace anything on the PC.

I've attached the HijackThis log and refer to the following 2 entries:

O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [0k4ny.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\0k4ny.exe /k

They keep appearing even though they were previously removed by HijackThis

Also when I open Internet Explorer, Zonealarm warns of an .exe file trying to access the internet. The name of the .exe file changes everytime with it's latest manifestation detailed on the log as:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\g2d.exe.

A:which piece of hardware is screwing up?

hey cmbl,

first check your cpu and system temperatures in the bios. if your cpu is over 60c, its very hot and below 60c is fine. also how much power are you running on your computer? 350watts? 400watts? what brand is your power supply?

you can also try changing the videocard drivers from your videocard and see if that helps get rid of the problem. another thing you can do is to check the eventlog and see if the computer post any errors. you can go to the eventlog by:

right click on my computer -> click on manage -> click on the eventviewer on the left hand side. then see if you get any errors mesages and post it here so we can help you further solve the problem.

another thing you can do is to test out your ram for any errors. check out www.majorgeeks.com and download memtest86 from the memory section. then you will need to put the program on a cd or floppy and boot from the cd or floppy. of course you will need to change your first boot device in the bios to cdrom or floppy. then the comp should boot to memtest86 and the program will begin testing out your ram for errors. let memtest go for about 10passes minimum.

Hey everybody, new to the board here, looking for some help with a relatively new HD thats already quitting on me, of course after I put GIGS of important data on it (and please, no 'always back up your data' replies. I know). Ok, the specifics:

Its a WD 80gig, formatted and partitioned to be a slave as it was only a dump for overflow. Running win98se. Has about 30-35 gigs on it.
I was copying a rather large folder from my boot/master to the slave WD when I noticed the transfer speed sucked. I assumed that I had somehow deactivated either DMA or block data transfer so.......I cancelled the copying in mid procedure. This is where the trouble started.

file folder pathways no longer existed when clicked on or entered manually upon restarting the drive shows up as D:, but when any operation regarding it is performed I get the message 'device attached to the system is not functioning'. BIOS recognizes the drive obviously, as does windows. A diagnostic test by WD utilities says there are no errors.

I have booted to DOS from floppy disk, and I get the same thing 'invalid media type reading drive c:' (c: b/c i ran this diagnostic w/only the WD attached to the sys). Nothing can be performed on the HD. Booting to win98 with a different master/boot drive yields no results. Messing with jumper settings on the WD does nothing. Trying a different IDE cable is ineffective.

I dont see how cancelling a copy procedure could junk the drive. Its rediculous. ... Read more

In order to use it, you'll need to have the drive connected internally on an IDE connector. But partition recovery is probably where you should look, and this is a good free one:

I am currently trying to make a copy of the files on my laptop to an external drive but after 1 Gb of data is transferred the status box when copying stops and doesn't seem to be copying over any further files. When I try to cancel the process it does not register that I have pressed cancel and I have to shut off my laptop manually, waiting a few seconds before turning it back on.

I have uninstalled avast believing that it might be causing an issue with the transfer but the result is still the same.

Recently after a failed attempt it has rendered my hard drive back to an ntfs unreadable state due to error code 0x80070570 .

Any help to resolve either issue would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

A:Windows 7: Windows 7 stalling during copying of large files to externa

What is the external HD? How old is it? When was it formatted etc..

In any case I would run a diagnostic on the external drive.
Also try a copying utility such as TeraCopy free version and see if it has similar problems(once the external drive is returned to a normal state or using another drive.)

A:Windows TOO large

Hi RM2007 !

What's the maximum display resolution you can set in the display properties ? You probably need to update your video drivers.

Your computer is pretty old and there doesn't seem to be any drivers for XP available from Dell's website.

Found these drivers from Ati's website : http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/legacy-xp.html. Yours should be the second one (under Rage Pro).

If your video card has the standard 4MB memory then once the drivers are installed you'll be able to set your display resolution to 1024 x 768 (85Hz).

About the run command, check that it's checked to appear in the sart menu properties :

I just bought a 160G hard drive, Seagate, to be used in an external case. Seagates software recognized it as 152+G but said that win 98 would only recognize as max of 137G unless I used their software and partition in 2 partions. This was Ok 1 partition at 80G and 1 at 80G. When all was said and done I only got 80 G and 1 at 57G, with 2 partitions. The partitions were done on a win98 desktop with drive as secondary slave. Any ideas as how to get more out of this harddrive.

Thanks for any help.

I used to have Avira Antivir. Then I got a rogue antispyware virus. I tried removing twice with Antivir (and Spyware Doctor) and it would not go away. Then i got Windows Live OneCare, ran a scan with it, and the virus was gone. I had no more popups. This just goes to show that you get what you pay for. Usually if you use a free Antivirus, then it will not work nearly as well as an antivirus that you pay for (except for Norton, Norton is just a piece of junk).

A:Avira Antivir is a piece of junk

I'm surprised to hear you say this. I've used Avira for a few years and have had no problems, and I've heard it recommend by others too. But I'm sorry you couldn't get rid of that virus with it.

A:Icon cover by piece of paper!!

If you have overlay icons (e.g. Xs) over your shortcut arrows on top of your Desktop icons this Tutorial may help: Shortcut Arrow - Change, Remove, or Restore.

If you follow the Tutorial (above) you may need to make the following adjustment: when “extracting” the ZIP file, right-click on the ZIP file, select Open With, and choose: Internet Explorer. Then select: Extract file to remove or replace shortcut arrow. That opens up a Folder, in which each of the files can be right-clicked and Properties can be accessed.

I need a new PC to replace my dead P3 700MHz (512 RAM). I don't use it for much beyond web and Office applications. I'm getting an AMD Athlon 64 bit, but need help to decide whether to buy the most basic 1.8GHz of 2.0GHz 754 sockets, or pay for more processor power and the 939 socket, which also comes with double RAM. Will I notice much difference in speed, and is it worth shelling out the extra cash for power that probably goes beyond my most basic needs?

A:AMD Athlon 64 bit. How long is this piece of string...

well if you go beyond your basic needs today, then you will be future proof for a long long time. socket 939 will be much faster than 754, and you can get a cheap processor for around $146 bucks.. you can get them even cheaper, too.

i dont know much about the specifics of the 2 types of processors except that one is faster than the other . im just saying that if you go big now, then you save money in the long run, as it will be a long time before you have to drop big bucks to upgrade again.

As the title suggests, I am looking for a new, reliable piece of virus protection software to use! What would you guys recommend that I use?

Right now I am currently just using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes, but I feel as if I should have something more! Please help! Thank you in advance!

A:Looking for a new piece of virus protection! Any suggestions?

WinPatrol (free and paid) has real-time protection BillP Studios - WinPatrol 2012 It checks for system changes.
I've read some people feel there are too many popup warnings.
I don't have that problem.
It depends on how much you install/uninstall programs, make system configuration changes, etc.
You can try it for free and see how you like it.
Malwarebytes offers free and a paid versions. The free version does NOT have real-time protection.
The paid (Pro) version does have real-time protection.
The Pro version is a one-time fee, lifetime license, no annual fees.
If you are using the free version you could upgrade to Pro.
If you play around with new programs a lot you could also consider Sanboxie
Using a VM (Virtual Machine)
Browser configuration and add-ons can also help with additional security.

Common sense, safe surfing, and reading before clicking are the best protection.

Hi, a week or 2 ago I was trying to install a keylogger on my pc (flatmate kept f*ing up my pc) which seems to to have been a malware or virus or something. A blank box flashed for like a few seconds and then closed itself. Ever since I have been plagued with problem after problem. First, whenever I connected my pc to the internet (plugged the router in) it just froze my pc. So I used my sister's laptop to download a bunch of anti-spyware software and updated virus defenitions for AVG and AntiVir Guard. Did a sweep in Safemode and tried to fix everything that it found. Then done the same in normal mode. Now I'm able to connect to the internet, but I believe the problem still exists.

Firstly when Windows loads up, just after all start-up programs have loaded, the whole screen goes blank for a second and comes back (I'm guessing thats the virus/malware doing that). Everything else seemed normal, but I have also noticed it has somehow limited my download speed to 200kB (I have a 15MB line that normally downloads files between 800k - 1, 1.1meg). But now however many files I download the maxium of my total downloads doesn't go past 200kB.

I have run a variety of antivirus and anti-spyware software (AVG, AntiVir Guard, AVG Anti-spyware, Spyware Terminator, Spyware Blaster, and a few registry cleaners), but none of them seem to pick up anything.

I found something called "Appinit_dll", googled it and found it was some CWS thing that needed to go. And follo... Read more

Hello leonardo2525 and welcome to TSF,

Before we begin, I'd like to see a more comprehensive set of logs.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.

What DSS will do:create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review.
DSS automatically runs HijackThis 1.99.1 for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt in your next reply.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and

Viruses keep randomly showing up (And are quickly stomped down by Avast) when I'm on non-suspect websites, which I suspect (But can't be sure of as I don't know my viruses very well) is because this piece of malware acts like a magnet for other malware.
My computer, after running a while, and even with only a few windows open, starts slowing down randomly.
Every time I go to the next page of e-mails when I check it, it automatically logs me off even if I've only been on a few seconds
Whenever I click on a link on Google, it redirects me to something completely different through websites such as hvacjob.com, euro BBq.com, personalmobility.com, and others.

Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Hello and welcome! Yes you are infected.. Let's do these and see what comes back. I am moving this from the XP to the Am I Infected forum.Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.46) and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button... How would I test which piece of hardware is broken: a sata to usb adapter or an internal harddrive? Sometimes, nothing is wrong at all. Other times, the harddrive keeps on disconnecting from my computer at random times, and im afraid it might destroy the platters from constantly stopping abruptly.

i dont want to have to buy another adapter/hdd to test out what is wrong. I want to buy only one object and be sure its replacing the right object

if this helps:
power cable: many, so i think that all of my power cables are fine

sata to usb cable: Newegg.com - SABRENT SATA-C35U Serial ATA (SATA) to USB 2.0 Cable Converter Adapter

harddrive: Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARS 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

A:How to check what piece of hardware is broken

I'm not certain that your problem is related to something that I read here on the forum recently or not. But WDC released a firmware patch for some drives, that would increase the amount of idle time before it would park the heads, reducing certain problems. I do not know that parking time would be involved with disconnections or not, and I failed to find exactly what I read. I do not think that this is exactly the patch mentioned, but it might help?

After screaming at me for almost an hour and insulting me she said she will only get my laptop refurbished on the spot        at home. The parts were installed back on my system but when I  used the laptop the following day another problem              had accured. 4. I contacted them agai and told them about my past experiences and that I wasnt accepting it under any standards.                  Nobody should have to spend so much money on a system  that fails and when asked for a replacement due to defects        and bad representation. 5. Hello.

I've spent hours looking trough google searches for every possible search combination, but I cant find anyone else with the same exact problem.

I bought a "Dlink NAS 320L", everything works fine and I had no issues setting it up, however on my only windows 8.1 PC, all the files show as taking 4GB size on the disk.

Picture:
I have updated to the latest firmware and the problem still persist. This issue does not happen on my other pc's and laptops which all run windows 7. My windows 8.1 is a fresh install is fully updated as well.

Disk checks out for errors.

Does anyone know why my windows 8.1 is showing every file as being 4GB in size on the NAS only? Even files larger than that. It seems like a windows explorer issue but I cant find any fixes for it.

It's also purely a display bug, on my windows 7 pc's and connecting online to the NAS shows the files as not taking up that much space. The problem is, windows tells me there's no room on the NAS based on it's reading the Size on disk as 4GB. Part of my music collection on it was 20~GB in size, but it showed as 14+TB on disk. The disk that's inside is 2TB large.

The NAS is running some kind of linux os with an ext4 file system (cant be changed).

I hope someone knows why my explorer is reading those files as that.

Much appreciated for any help anyone could offer. Thank you.

A:File Size on disk for NAS showing as 4GB a piece

That's interesting. "Size on disk" is reported wrong for files on my NAS also:

Time to go Google!

Edit: Ok, like the OP, when I check this from a Win 7 machine the "size on disk" is reported correctly. Googling around found lots of "wrong size on disk" issues, but nothing specifically related to Win 8.1. Oh well....

This isn't really related to windows 7 (although I am using it and doing my programming based on it), I have a simple circuit consisting of a battery, a transistor and an LED.
I want to use the transistor to light up the LED by sending voltage to a cable. I tried using the USB port, however, it has a positive, negative and 2 data cables. Both cables are continuously sending data, so I cannot make the voltage 0 on any of them and stop the LED.
I've heard I must use a printer port, or an ATA connector, I am fairly unsure of what control software has over hardware. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Later edit: I mean other than using an USB interface

A:What port do I use to send information to a piece of hardware?

With a 16 bit OS or even Windows 9x this would be a relatively simple task. But with the NT platform direct access to hardware is the exclusive domain of system level code. Actually it is done by the HAL but that can only be called with system level code, or in other words a device driver. Writing a device driver is not a simple thing.

You really need to find a device driver that can do what you want.
