Is there any way to make the notification area slide out, like on older systems, instead of opening the little window?

A:Customize notification area

Hi there Skit, and welcome to Eightforums!

You mean like it was under Windows XP? Where the notification icons would slide to the left?

Don't think it is possible in Windows 8. This feature was already removed in Windows 7. So I see there is no way this going to change anymore.

Just start getting used to the new way the notification area works .

My notification area always displays all icons and notifications, but when I want to customize those systray icons, for some reason I can no longer use "Restore default icon behaviors" or make any other customations.
In window "Select which icons and notifications appear on the taskbar" all the options beneath "Behaviors" are inaccessable (showing 'Only show notifications' in a greyed out fashion). Also, when trying to click on any icon beneath "Icons" nothing happens.

At the bottom the selection option "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar" is greyed out and its checkbox unmarked.

When I click on "Turn system icons on or off" I get the correct window ("Turn system icons on or off"), and "Behaviors" are accessable. However, when clicking "Restore default icon behaviors" nothing happens. Clicking on "Customize notification icons" brings me back to the "Select which icons..." window with those non working options.

I have tried Brink's tutorial "How to Hide or Show System Icons and Notifications in Windows 7", but no matter which of the included .reg files I merge, nothing changes and "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar" stays greyed out with its checkbox unmarked.

Otherwhise, my system (Win7 64-bit Ultimate) runs great, I just cannot make some systray customations that I would now like to.

Using this control panel applet, I can configure how these icons behave. But ... I can't actually delete the icon entries in this applet for apps I've uninstalled, etc. It's worse with some apps, for example: SpeedFan. This is a portable app, and I have it start with Windows. There are now *three* icon entries for it showing in this applet. I installed and later uninstalled Skype, yet it still persists in the Notification Area Icons app, with two instances, no less. (I used Revo Uninstaller to remove the app and registry entries, and I then cleaned the registry with Reg Organizer 5.0.)

In addition, I can see no rhyme or reason as to how the icons are listed in this applet. Every time I want to make a change to a program's icon, I must scroll through the entire list and find every instance. Why no way to sort, delete, etc.?

Or is there something I'm missing?

TIA!

There seems to be no way provided in Outlook for this so I assume it will be a non-conventional solution.

A:How to customize the notification wave in Outlook?

In Windows 98se, you open Control Panel->Sounds. Place a copy of your WAV file in the Media Folder. Then go down the event list to new mail notification and browse to your WAV file of choice.

If it turns out that there is no way provided, then simply move the current Windows notification WAV file to another folder. Move/copy your WAV file into the media folder and rename it to whatever the Windows notification WAV is called.

Hello,

I'm using XP Pro with SP3 and I realized today that the drop down menu for customizing my notifcations toolbar isn't "working." That is, when I go into Taskbar and Start Menu Properties >> Customize taskbar, everything is set for "hide when inactive" and the drop down menu doesn't work (ie, if I click the downarrow, nothing happens)

Also, only the "Current Items" are listed (no "Past Items") I've tried clicking restore defaults but no luck. Here's a screen shot -- I'm clicking the down arrow on the menu but only a small black bar appears beneath the field.

I've installed several programs during the past couple of days (Thunderbird for one). Could that be causing this? It's been quite a while since I used that function so I don't know when it went on the blink.

Any suggestions?

Hello all,

After hours of Googleing I haven't been able to find an answer to what I'm trying to accomplish so I hope someone here has an answer or an idea for me.

The Notification area in Windows 7 has a customize link to where you can show or hide different icons. In that customize section there is an icon to a program that I have installed and running in the background that I don't want to be there. I want that icon NOT to be displayed at all in that customize section.

I've found many of sites that show how to "clean" the notification area but that's not what I'm trying to do. Cleaning implies the app is no longer installed and the icon was left behind somehow. Also completely disabling the tray notification is not an option.

I want to be able to either remove the link to the customize option in the notification area or just remove the program icon itself via a registry tweak, loca Policy or any other way. I'm not sure is disabling the notification Area Applet in the control panel will help but if there's a way to do that I'm also open to try it

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

A:Notification Area Tweak

Not sure why you need to do this but I doubt there's a method other than telling the program not to display the icon. Maybe a registry tweak but that's probably program dependent.

without success. In the control panel I cannot click on "restore default". "Clock" ist working, but all other system icons are "greyed (blacked) out". The program icons are not shown (cpl) although the programs are running.

In my notification area (by the time) I have three objects: Sound controls, internet, and Action Center. By clicking on the arrow next to it you see a tray of many other things that I like to keep out of sight. However, often one of these items (For example, Dropbox) will randomly hop out of the tray and into the list with the other three objects and will be in clear sight. It is not just Dropbox that does it (although that seems to be the usual perp), so I don't believe it has something to do with Dropbox connecting all the time or being "active". Is there any solution to this problem? I have tried going into the properties of the notification area ("Customize...") and turning the icons off, but to no avail.

The most annoying ommission is volume control, but the battery icon (which shows how much power is left) and Lexmark All-In-One Center are also a pain.

Here is the new info. Machine A has multiple users, and under the second user's profile, the notification area appears to be ok. I think the problem may be related to Registry Mechanic 3.0, which I ran under my own profile (and also on machine B), but not the secondary user profile. Could RM have deleted an entry that makes the notification area function properly? If so, what would it have been and how do I get it back? Are there other explanations for this problem?

This is something that has been bugging me for a while now...

When I get a notification of new email (or other taskbar notification), it takes precedence over what I'm doing. So, if I'm typing something, I'm suddenly bumped out of the program when a new notification comes in (making the notification the active window).

How can I keep this from happening? I want to be notified when I get new mail or Adobe CC has an updates, etc., but don't wish it to take over from what I'm working on.

Old computer, fresh install of XP Pro SP2.

The problem: when I tried to update the WIDCOMM Bluetooth software, my notification/system tray area loses its little "Hide Inactive Icons" functionality and the only way to return things to normal is by performing a System Restore. Obviously I already tried going into Start Menu And Taskbar settings, and it didn't make any difference at all.

I also had an issue where Automatic Updates had to be manually jumpstarted, as in, I'd need to go into the settings, disable it, click apply, and then re-enable the option to notify me before downloading or installing (because this way, I at least know it's working). I don't know when this started, or what I did to cause it, but the only way to get THAT back was the ol' "nondestructive repair install." Of course, during these so-called jumpstarts, I still didn't have any icon in the system tray and for all I know the updates weren't being downloaded at all.

I put this OS on this machine TWO DAYS AGO and I've installed nothing besides the PCI USB 2.0 card, Avast Antivirus, Windows Defender and my network adapter.

I did the no-reformat repair today hoping it would solve the issue I'd been having with the Automatic Updates notifications, which at the moment, it seems to have done. But now my Bluetooth adapter, while "found," is non-operational. The Bluetooth software as such appears to be intact.

Due to the repair, I... Read more

I have an onboard ethernet adapter, and it is not plugged into a LAN. When I boot I get a network icon with a slash through it saying that a cable is not plugged into the adapter. I know this. I am using Win XP pro. I right click on the task bar go to properties, then click the customize button under notification area, then I choose Always Hide under that local area connection icon. However, when I reboot it is back in the notication area and it's property is Hide When Inactive. How can I prevent this icon from appearing in my notification area every time I boot?

Hi all.. Have a very random annoyance here. The "show hidden icons" arrow in the notification area will sometimes randomly go all the way to the right of the screen and the tray icons and even the time and date will disappear. If I hit the arrow, it returns to normal and moves over to the left and shows the icons and clock. Not sure what I am doing that is causing this. Using Win & 64 bit and this install is only 2 weeks old. I do remember it doing this some time ago when I first installed it.

This is kind of weird, I only just noticed it (reinstalled vista a week or two ago)
The notification area, down by the time, has 13 icons showing. And there isn't any "<" or ">" symbol near them at all. Is there setting that I touched on accident that disabled the notification area's ability to collapse after a certain number of icons are displayed? Or, is it normal for it to show 13 icons without collapsing....

A:Notification area not collapsing

Hi Seijun

Yes, there is a setting you need to change. It;s in the Start Menu and Taskbar properties. Right click the taskbar and select Properties, you'll find it in there. I'm booted into Windows 7 right now and that is changed a bit in this OS so I can't be more precise but you can't miss it.

I have 10 icons I show in the tray next to the clock at all
times.

Some days it will bring up the 10 other days it may show 3or 4. When it works the 10 will open during the first turn on of the day and stay showing until turnoff.

Next turn on may bring in 3-4.

It is somehow connected to the RBA function.

Sometime I get this pop-up."TBA has encounted a problem and needs to close. etc etc."

When this comes up my computer stops,if I click the pop
up to clear it the computer starts again and the 10 icons
all show in the tray. It will go several days without the
pop-up showing and the 10 icons will show ok.

Then it goes back to the 3 or 4 icons showing in the tray.
It will do that for a few days then the pop-up message
returns and I get the 10 again.

I haven't made any changes to anything it just started
its tricks about a month ago.

Any ideas will be helpful. Thanks Charlie
.

A:Notification Area in Windows XP

Hi, Charlie,
I can't comment on the TBA error but as far as the icons, I spent a lot of time surfing for an answer to the disapearing icons and found that if I wait
awhile before selecting my user name at logon (I wait until my Floppy drive active light comes on and goes back off - I know this sounds stupid) then all the icons are always there. Someone indicated that during start-up certain
programs do not get a chance to run before the desktop appears if you logon quickly and as a result some icons are not placed in the notification area. This issue seems to get worse the more programs you have loading at startup.

I'm working with a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro. So far, all I had done was:
Install the OS (on a freshly formatted drive),
Ran Windows Update, used "Check for updates," and installed all the important updates, then rebooted.
Repeated step 2 until it didn't find any new updates.
When it was done, I went to customize the Notification Area Icons, and I noticed that Windows Update appears twice, as seen here:

I've seen items get stuck there before, from uninstalled apps, and I've fixed it using Piriform's CCleaner.

So I downloaded and installed CCleaner, checked the "Tray Notification Cache" checkbox, clicked "Run Cleaner," and rebooted.

But it didn't fix the problem.  I realize this problem may be purely cosmetic, but I'd still like to fix it if possible.

Any suggestions?

I am really sick of my PC constantly changing whether icons in the notification area are shown or not. Doing this manually every time they change is a real pain (I have to reset my Mailwasher icon to 'Show Icon and Notifications' every two days or so, for instance). Why does Windows keep resetting my preferences?

I thought I may be able to make the task of resetting the icons to how I want them displayed, rather than how Windows decides they should be, a bit easier by backing up the relevant registry key when the icons are displayed as I want:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

and just merging it when things change. But although that seems to restore the values to the registry key it doesn't actually make any changes to what is displayed in the notification area.

Anyone know of a 'one-click' solution to this annoyance? Googling hasn't lead me to a solution as yet.. the following post (first answer) even seems to suggest that it isn't possible:

A glitch has arisen during boot. Running XP Pro 3, fully patched, the boot process has slowed considerably as if Windows is looking for something missing or some file it needs is damaged. The manifestation of the problem is in the Icon Notification area e.g. containing the clock. Hide inactive icons is not on. Nonetheless several Icons do not now appear. E.g. that for Eset Nod32, for Comodo, for True Crypt etc. Oddly some do appear, as they should, e.g. Spyware Doctor, the network icons, Sandboxie, an HP Printer Icon and EPU-6 Engine. All of the actual programs cited from the antivirus & firewall to the Engine seem to have started ok during boot as evidenced by using task manager and identifying the related processes as being ok and running. The issue is that they do not show in the Icon Notification area. Another anomaly: I looked to ensure that I had not turned on Hide Inactive Icons on the Task Bar and Start Menu Screen. I clicked it out of interest and while scrolling the Customize Screen the icons associated with various programs are wrong.
Thus ? Where might I look to identify the problem

I am currently running a SONY VAIO VPCCW21FX with an NVIDIA 310M graphics card installed. Recently, a black box has appeared in the right side of the taskbar, starting from just left of the change language dialog and going all the way right. When ending the explorer.exe process, the box remain, and when highlighting it, the loading cursor appears. I've attached some screenshots to give a better visual. Any ideas and/or known causes/fixes to this issue? It does not seem to affect performance at all, but it worries me that a more serious unseen issue may exist as well.

Thanks!

Edit: it should be noted that clicking the box turns it white, and after a few more clicks it goes away. Also, I apologize if this was posted in the wrong forum... I am still unsure as to if this is a hardware issue with my graphics card or a software issue.

Hello,

After waking up, as per usual, I turn on my computer. Let it boot up, and login to my user (who is administrator). After walking away, I sit down, and notice I have no icons in my notification area on my task bar. I proceed to restart my computer, thinking maybe my computer is loading rather slow - I was wrong.

I then began searching for help through Google and I found others with the same issue - most of which had been resolved. I decided to try each of these solutions, unfortunately, none of them seemed to work in any way. (If you're wondering, I tried Reset_Notifications_Icons_List.reg, Notification clear [program] and manually removing the 'explorer.exe' process and adding it again through the Task Manager).

Also, my pinned taskbar programs seem to be a lot large than they previously were. Which I'm not happy about.

Images below show changes in my task bar;

Before:

Now:

As you can tell in the picture now, I am also no longer able to change settings.

If anyone could give me a solution to this issue; much would be appreciated.

Got a call from a friend. The spkr. icon does not show in notification area, nor does she have sound when inserting a CD. My first thought is a bad sound card, but not certain. A:Spkr. not shown in notification area

Hard to tell what the problem is. The speaker icon is just a byproduct of the problem since she does not have audio.

Since the sound card shows the PC sound with no errors, RIGHT click on the sound entry to highlight it and then LEFT click "uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of corruption problems.

Yesterday morning I used my laptop and the notification area was fine and looked like this. Last night when I went to use it again it looked like this, a lot of the icons are missing and noticed it was running a little slow.

I thought maybe something got messed up and they got turned off/switched to hidden and went in to unhide them but as the 2nd picture shows the icons don't even show up. I updated my antivirus and antispywares and did a complete scan, but didn't find anything. I tried restarting it a few times and the only thing I noticed is that one time after a restart Norton was automatically turned off.

I don't have any Sony CDs so I don't think its their a virus using their antiprivacy program.

Any ideas?

I'd do an online scan to check for viruses: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Could you give us a few more details on your problem please? If you're concerned about the network icon being in your system tray, then it's nothing to worry about

Icons do not appear or appear randomly even though I have selected "Show icon and notification". Usually appear as hidden icons. I know this not an uncommon problem but I have yet to find a solution which works. If you have experienced this problem and have resolved it I would appreciate knowing the method short of re-installing Windows 7.

so i had to move my computer around a bit today
unplugged everything, did some cleaning to get rid of the dust, then plugged everything back in

first off, when i started up the computer i got a screen that i hadn't seen before saying the bios were reset, and prompting me to either set them up again, or use the default values. since ive never changed anything inside the bios i chose to have it use the default values, figured no big deal

and everything is fine now - almost. in the lower right hand corner, where id normally see my connection status, volume control, and all that jazz, only the volume icon is there, but i cant adjust the volume - right and left clicking on it does nothing. where the other icons used to be theres now just a blank space

when i click the up arrow to show the hidden icons, its the same thing, several blank spaces that disappear and resize as i move the mouse over them

ive attached a picture...this is pretty frustrating, if anyone could offer any insight that would be great! thanks!

oh and i dont think its any sort of malware...i ran a few scans beforehand when this started and nothing came up, but who knows

*edit*
also when i started up again i had to reset my computer date and time...maybe something happened to the cmos battery?

No matter what and where I search, I found no solution to my problem.
My notification area is behaving strangely :
By default if one clicks the clock, the network icon or that small triangle arrow that shows the list of hidden icons, the clock or the list should remain on screen so further action can be taken but mine clock or other list disappear as soon as I move my pointer on them. Strange isn't it ?
If I failed to make my point clear. Here is a simple example :
When I left click the far right of notification area i.e time & date, the calender appears, but as soon as I move my mouse pointer to the calender or some other area, the calender disappears whereas it should remain on screen to see some older dates or so. The same thing happen with other notification icons like network etc.

P.S. : If I move the pointer at a very fast phase (relay quick) to the opened list, then I am able to use it as normal. The keyboard arrow keys also work if left click the icon and then use the keyboard.

What options do I have to rectify this problem.

Thanks in advance.

A:Notification Area behaving abruptly

Run CCleaner and check the item; "Tray Notifications Cache" under "Advanced" options.

Now stop and then restart Explorer.

This clears the cache and resolves most problems.

For some unusual reason, the network icon has disappeared in the notification area by the clock. I have tried rebooting. Once it reappeared and then I noticed later it was gone again. I have tried going to the customization list and the name is there but not the icon.
This may sound petty to some people, but I really would like to have my network icon back.
And yes I am on the network but the icon is missing.

Thanks to anyone who can help me.

When you click on customisation, do you get the following option?

System Icons - Turn On or Off

or

Notification Area Icons - Hide or Show System Icons and Notifications

I've used far too much time on this but it's nagging me to resolve it. I hope I haven't done any damage with the efforts I've made so far but I do have a very recent restore point set so I guess I'm okay on that.

Here's my problem. I followed Brian Krebs' advice and installed EMET 4.1. That went okay and I'm able to open it from the directory it resides in and also using the shortcut I created in my start menu (it didn't populate my start menu on install). No problem. Except that in the notification area, if I right click on "open EMET" I get the dreaded "Admin privileges are required." I'd like to resolve that just because.

But also in the list of notification icons are several applications I no longer have. Will these drop off eventually or is there a way to edit what's on that list? I know I can control whether they show or hide but I'd like to be sure every vestige of the removed programs is gone and that would include its notification area listing. Which brings up another issue but I'll post it separately.

Thanks as usual for the help.

A:EMET and notification area permissions.

Hello Gorham,

If you mean that you get an UAC prompt when you open EMET, then that's normal since EMET requires to "Run as administrator" (elevated), and you must give administrator approval first. Are you logged in to an administrator account when you try to open EMET? Did you disable UAC?

You could use the tutorial below to reset your notification area icons to remove the old ones from uninstalled programs.

Hope this helps for now,

I am having problems with the Windows notification area. I have enabled the custom settings and set all past and present settings to 'always show'. I still do not have the sound icon displayed. 'Place sound icon in notification area' is enabled in the Control panel, sounds and audio devices section.

Is there any way to get the sound icon to display permanently?

Hi, I clicked on the bottom right of my taskber, where is says "show hidden icons".
I then clicked on customize and found 2 program icons that I had previously uninstalled. One was; Registrybooster and the other Revouninstaller.
I opened Regedit and found nothing conserning these 2 programs.
How do I remove them off the notification area. I don't just wont to hide them.

A:Remove notification area icons?

In registry editor go here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

Delete: "PasteIconsSteam" and "IconStreams" keys.

Close the registry editor and then go into task manager and kill the explorer.exe process.

Restart your computer, and hopefully the uninstalled programs should dissapear from your notification area!

Hope this helps.

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro X64.
Recently I have noticed that Notification Area Icons for some apps have disappeared.
A reinstall or a repair install sometimes brings them back but then they disappear after a while, and usually after the next reboot.
Have checked forums for the affected products and the only solution offered there is reinstall or repair install.
I very much doubt that this issue is down to the products. It is almost certainly a Windows problem but of course Windows Tech Support offers nothing other than the usual banal references to largely irrelevant "how to" articles.

Anyone else hit this problem?

A:Notification Area Icons Disappear

I wish I had your problem! Mine is quite the opposite - How to stop the notificationlist from building up constantly.
Anyway, what have you tried?

Click the small white arrow by the notification area.
Click Customise
Try clicking "always show all icons...etc (Bottom left item)
or you could try, in the same window, returning to default.
