Desktop Page Flashing

Q: Desktop Page Flashing

I have hp pavilion g6-2249 wm notebook. My laptop is 4 months old. Two days ago when I started my
pc, the welcome page opens and then I sign in. Everything is ok on the apps page that immediately opens.
If I click the desktop app icon, it goes to the desktop and the entire page starts to flash, it shows the desktop
for 2 seconds and then then flashes to blue for 5 seconds and back and forth, etc.

The desktop will not stay open long enough for me to do anything. I cannot get it to start in safe mode. I clicked
F8 repeatedly on start up but nothing happens. I used the esc on startup and ran every test offered except BIOS.
I don't know what to do with that so I didn't mess with it. All tests were ok.

If I go back to the app page from the flashing desktop, the app page and charms start flashing also. I can't even
shut down properly then. Norton 360 runs in the background all the time but I can't get to it to do a scan. I
can't get to any file. The only way to get online is to turn off pc and turn on later. App page does not flash at
that time. I go to search and click on Explorer and I can go to my homepage. If I click on required addons then
the background starts flashing and I have to reset my cursor every two letter that I type. I am going crazy.
Can someone help me???
Thanks

If you can do this, you can get to Safe Mode:

Windows key + C.
Settings
Power
Hold shift key and click RESTART.
then you have all the options.

Click on Advanced Options then Startup Settings.
Click Restart and you have almost the full advanced Boot Options menu like XP, Vista or Win 7.

Hi,

I have this flashing banner ad at the bottom of every webpage I go to.
Norton popped up and said it detected infostealer.gampass

So i can't get this ad to go away and when looking for info on google for it, the links almost all send me to MSN livesearch page.

I pretty much have no knowledge of computers. If anyone can me that would be great.

Thanks

I am having problems with my computer. I have windows vista home edition. When i turn the computer on all it will not go into windows and just gives me blank screen with flashing cursor at the top of the page. F8 will not work so that I can go into safe mode. I am able to hit F2 to get into system settings but I do not know enough about computers to do anything. I have no recovery disks because computer did not come with one. Before it crashed I got a message saying I had a trojan. So i opened up my malware and started a scan, I left the computer and an hour or two later when I came back is when the computer screen was blank with cursor. I am aware of the viruses that come up making you think something is wrong with computer so you will go and purchase a bogus antivirus program. I have had these attack my computer lately and the way I got rid of them was to use restore points. RIght now I cannot do anything, none of the function keys work except F2. How can I check to see if this is a virus or if there is a system problem. I have put anti-virus cd in my computer but it will not boot from this. Please help

Greetings to all -- this is my first post, so if I act funny ......

Yesterday I am certain the Whatsapp voicemail thing hit my oldish Dell Inspiron Windows 7.  Foolishly I clicked on the email and here I am.

Things went downhill from there, until today, all the computer does is blink at me with the black Dell bootup page, flashing on and off, with a little grinding sound, mocking, laughing at me.

I tried pulling out the battery and putting it back in;  I tried booting up with a cd in the player;  I tried prayer;  so far nothing has worked;  still getting the flashing Dell boot up page.    So I can't even get to first base on any of the strategies for downloading cleanups, etc. described in the Forum.

Really, what I'm most concerned about is my document library.   I'm wondering if there's a way to extract it from the demonic broken Inspiron even without getting the computer well.   I probably ought to trade in the thing anyhow, since I've had it since 2010.   By the way -- I'm writing this now on my pre-historic Dell Inspiron, which actually went to Iraq with me in 2006.  It's heavier than an M-16, but it's working fine.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received -- thanks to all.   Will check back tomorrow.

Best wishes,

Grapeshot

A:Whatsapp Virus -- Flashing Dell page, and nothing else....

Couple of questions to rule out some things first.

First, you mention the Dell page "flashing"  Does this mean that, when the computer is turned on, the computer flashes the dell page over and over again, until the computer is turned off?  Or, does the page flash once, you hear the grinding, and then the computer shuts off until you turn it on again?

Second, you mention a grinding noise.  Any other noises?  I'm particularly interested in beeps.  if there are any beeps, how many and in what pattern?

Hello,

Hopefully I posted this in the right forum? Sorry, I'm kinda new to this...

So the log in page on my computer is not loading at all. There is no icon, no password, nothing, just the log in background screen. The screen also flashes a black screen really fast... When I put my computer to safe mode the same problem is there except the flashing occurs once every ~1 minute. Because of this problem I can't use my computer at all and I don't know what I should do next..

Computer:
Windows 7 Home Premium
Fujitsu Lifebook L Series

Also, yesterday night I turned off my computer to go to sleep, my computer was doing an automatic update so it was on for awhile while I slept.

Thanks guys!

After an apparently succussful startup, the desktop icons (all of them) and the toolbar flash off and on; maybe 3-4 seconds on, then 3-4 seconds off, repeatedly and endlessly. When icon is clicked or a program is selected from the Start Program menu, it will come up, but the desktop continues to flash off and on. Restarting has not helped . . yet.

i cant semem to get rid of this problem. i have run antivirus and adaware many times and this still crops up. originally i followed directions on how to get rid of the virus that puts winserver.exe in my running programs. i have successfully rid myself of this, but my screen still flashes like it is changing desktop settings and I noticed if i right click on the desktop, the file reference is desktop.html in the c:\windows\web folder. i dont see any instance of that. it sounds like this was evidence of the [email protected] worm. so i followed the instructions on how to get rid of this on the symantec website. can someone help me. here is my hijack log. thanks so much

Hi Everyone.
The last week or so, a desktop on one computer(1st) (on a network with multiple computers) begins to flash off and on. The desktop is not responsive at all, however I can open programs like outlook or chrome and use them while behind, the desktop is flashing.
I have found out that if I restart a different computer(2nd) on the network the flashing stops! While the first computer I mentioned is flashing, a third computer(3rd) on the network will have the spinning circle on the mouse pointer, spinning of and on constantly. And again once I restart that network computer(2nd) the flashing on the 1st computer stops and the spinning circle on the 3rd computer stops...That 2nd computer threw a "sihost" error, but I only seen that once.
I have turned off the recommended services listed on other forums, I don't see any of the 3 programs Microsoft has said caused this installed.. And I have done complete virus removals on the computers.. During the scans it found minimal items and nothing too serious.
I am not sure what to do... Every time I think it is fixed the issue comes back. I have been a tech for 10 years or so and never came across anything like this?
If anyone has any insight or solutions please let me know. My clients needs to be up and going correctly.

There is two accounts on my laptop, one for me and one for my dad. The one for me is Admin and password protected, but my Dad's is restricted and non password protected. He complained to me one day that the desktop kept refreshing, so I logged into his account. Then, when Windows loaded, I thought everything was fine until after about three seconds when everything seemed to have "Refreshed". The icons and the bottom bar would dissappear and re-appear every few seconds. When I viewed my processes, I saw Explorer.exe terminating and restarting again.

Google got me nothing, and Norton/A bunch of spyware programs did not help, so I created a new account for him and moved some powerpoint files there. It worked fine. After, I decided that it's okay now, so I deleted the old account that was having the explorer.exe troubles. But now, the new account that I thought was safe is doing the same thing. Does anyone know why? Because it's not happening on my account.

I am running windows xp. I am having all kinds of trouble with this computer. i started getting homepage hijacking, and pop-ups saying my computer is infected. so i downloaded many different spyware removers. i used advanced systemcare 3, spyware terminator and symantec endpoint along with spybot and adaware. All the programs seemed to pick up many different problems and after fixing the problems with the programs, the computer is doing something totally new. the desktop flashes on and off. i lose all the icons, background changes, and i lose the start bar and then they come right back, it keeps doing this every 10 seconds then they just totally disappear. i followed a thread similar to this one with the suggestion i use SDfix but here is another problem: I cant get into safe mode. When i hit F8 the screen comes up for safe mode then my keyboard freezes up so i cant highlight it to run this SDfix.
This is my hijack this log report maybe that could help

However, I tried the solution presented in that thread and my desktop still flashes on and off. It seems to me that the process causing explorer.exe to crash is wuauclt.exe, but I don't know enough about this sort of thing to take action without advice.

Hey,

I'm having a slight problem with my PC, I don't know the cause as of yet but I'm guessing it may be a virus of some sort. Yesterday my computer froze and when I restarted it, everything was normal, except for when it reached the Desktop. The icons & task bar began to flash on and off. I tried restarting the system but to no avail. Now the icons & taskbar don't flash on at all and i'm left with the desktop's background image and nothing else. I tried to do a System Restore but I have no dates that I can restore to apart from yesterdays date after it all began, so that's no use. If anyone can help with what the problem might be and a fix, it would be appreciated.

Oh, and the specs of the PC are:

Packard Bell
Windows XP Home Edition Ver. 2002
Service Pack 3
Intel Celeron CPU 2.50GHZ
256MB RAM

Thanks

I am running Windows XP SP2 and I am trying to figure out how to make my icons on the desktop to stop flashing. I have probably downloaded a nasty trojan or worse. Computer is running slow windows boots up, but I when I try to access something from the start bar icons flash and the command that I just did resets itself making it very difficult to do anything. I can access the internet and explorer holds a solid connection but I can see the icons still flashing in the background. After a little while the flashing stops and the icons no longer apprear. Then all I can access is the task manager by ctrl>alt>del. But that's it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Please make the flashing stop...... I have a feeling that I miht be able to do something using the safe mode but not sure what to do.

My computer will boot up fine and windows will load and as soon as the desktop is done loading and everything initializes, it begins to flash and all the icons disappear and reappear including the taskbar and start menu. My computer boots up fine and windows loads, but as soon as the desktop is done loading/initializing it begins to flash. By this I mean all the icons disappear and reappear. Also during this time any programs or windows I have open get closed as well (except task manger). This repeats until eventually I'm just left with my wallpaper and my right clicking function on desktop no longer works. Now I have had task manager open while this happens and under the processes tab I'll see imapi.exe pop (when the icons return for a second) and then go off the list as well as my icons redisappearing. At once point I also saw the process verclsd.exe pop up, but only once. Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today. Without meaning to sound condescending, please don't fix entries yourself with HijackThis; it can actually do more harm than good because the main bulk of the log lists legitimate items. Please download VundoFix to your Desktop.Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.Click the Scan for Vundo button.Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button. You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YESOnce you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo. When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt in your next reply. Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting. Please include VundoFix.txt and a new HijackThis log in your next reply. Thanks,Charles

Check out this tutorial on how to boot into safe mode: Safe Mode - Start Windows 8 in

How old is the laptop? If it's still in warranty, you may want to send it back to HP for repair.

Hi, a few days ago I noticed that my desktop icons flash. The flash is bright white. It's not the entire desktop just at the top. It's like there is a camera back there, and the flash is going off. Sometimes, if I click anywhere on my desktop a few icons will flash. Anyone have any suggestions? It's very annoying.

Thanks,

Wendy

In the last two days i have seen three systems with the desktop icons flashing on and off. You are unable to do anything because the whole screen disapears and when it returns the task you attempted to start has stopped. I have tried in Safe mode as well. Using windows XP restore wont work either. Is the a virus? I am a computer tech and have never experienced this before. The only solution i have found is to reinstall Xp Pro. Also of the three system, all stated that they had just finished an update. One was with Norton System works 2004 and one with MS update. The other was unsure. All have Service Pack 2 as well. The third machine has a variant of the above problems in so much as it will not allow you to activate any system command. ie. Restore, control panel, my computer etc. It is a slow system and hence the flashing is not as quick yet in safe mode it appears to be the same problem. Please help.

This computer is running Windows XP. The problem I am having is that my desktop background is flashing and it wont allow me to change it. Prior to this blue to white flashing there was an error message with a button on it that said something like, click here to restore your web background. I wasn't running any virus protectionbut just installed and started running Mcafee internet Protection Suite and SpySweeper. Once I ran these and deleted the tons of spyware and viruses that were found on the computer, that is when the error message went away and the flashing started. Please help. Thanks so much.

My Desktop is flashing from normal to an error message saying that it has been changed. It has a bar that says "to restore desktop click here" I've tried to click, but nothing happens. I can't pull any of my programs up, because they disappear when the screen flashes. I did get to the system restore, but it won't give me an option to restore to an earlier date (meaning that when the calender comes up, there is no other date besides yesterday). It will let me online if I do it quick enough, but I can see the flashing in the background. I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to completely restore, and loose all that is saved. I'm using an emachine, with windows XP. Can Anyone help?

Thanks,

I have a windows 8 laptop. It takes forever to boot. It automatically goes to the desktop. After the icons have loaded, they all disappear. I am left with the taskbar, which is empty except for the windows logo. Then the whole screen flashes between dark blue and light blue.
I got into safe mode, and the same thing happens. It doesn't give me time to do anything. In safe mode I opened IE, then it started flashing, all the icons disappeared. IE stayed on the screen but it was inoperable.
I don't have any system disks to reinstall or repair from.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Right before I was rebooting my computer yesterday, I got a dll error (i couldn't read the error it flashed to quickly).

Since rebooting the taskbar & desktop icon keep flashing on/off. I saw another poster on here that was having a similar problem: http://tinyurl.com/2ahlmh, but I couldn't reply to that post.

I ran vundofix, sdfix, combofix, and gmer. But I am still having the problem. What do you suggest?

I got a flashing desktop (goes black and desktop) after upgrading to Windows 10.  After logging in, it is fine for about 10-15 seconds, then it will start flashing. I couldn't do anything - click on anything except CTRL-ALT-DELETE to go to Task Manager. I did the upgrade 2x already. Before my first attempt, I did not do anything with my PC - I did not do any driver updates. When I got the flashing desktop after ugrading, I panicked and immediately rolled back to Windows 7. I was able to get to the Recovery window during the 10-15 seconds time frame right after logging in. Thankfully, it went back to Windows 7. After the first try, I read a little bit about the similar issue and so I tried some of suggested solutions - to update drivers on my PC, to disable Windows reporting services (While on Win 10), to try to go to Safe Mode. So I tried again. I updated all the things I can update (drivers mostly) before the upgrade. Did PC Clean up. I got the flashing desktop again. It's the same. So while, it's flashing, I tried to disable the Windows reporting services which is very difficult to do with the flashing desktop. It did not do anything obviously. So I went to Safe Mode. After booting to safe mode, I got the normal desktop screen for about 5 seconds but a blue window quickly flashed then the desktop on Safe Mode just turned black, with only the mouse pointer visible. So, I rolled back to Windows 7 again. I don't have a lot of stuff/programs on my ... Windows Hate. I mean Windows 8! It's a little difficult to describe.  When logged in to any account the desktop starts flashing, slowily at first.  Every time it flashes or refreshes itself whatever is typed or partly open becomes undone.  For example if I manage to open a run command whenever I start typing after each flash/refresh the typing is undone.  Then it starts flashing even faster and makes it impossible to open anything or perform any task.  I managed to turn off  most items in msconfig and to enable safe mode which had to be done extemely quickly after log in. But after logging out of Safe mode (which seemed to works OK), and logging back into regular mode, the safe mode feature seem to be turned off again. Was able to run JRT and Esset while in safemode but did not solve the problem.

Thanks for your input!

I didn't notice this problem until I installed the Jaton GeForce 6200 graphics card. I installed it and updated the drivers. But now, sometimes when I open programs, there's this 1.5 by 1.5 inch square in the middle of the screen! If it happens when I open Google Chrome, then when I close it, there's a white square. If it's Steam, and I close it, it's a gray square. This is also really annoying when playing games, because it flashes on and off and makes gameplay difficult if not impossible. I have an LCD monitor and have already run a bunch of dead pixel tests, and haven't come up with anything. I have mcafee total protection, and I clean my registry weekly...can someone please tell me what's wrong?

All the programs seemed to pick up many different problems and after fixing the problems with the programs, the computer is doing something totally new. the desktop flashes on and off. i lose all the icons, background changes, and i lose the start bar and then they come right back, it keeps doing this every 20-30 seconds. also, when the icons come back i have a background that is an "active desktop recovery" screen. it still has all my icons on that screen and they work, but when it goes blank is is a screen of just my wallpaper with no icons or start bar. i noticed in the running processes that there is a edi.exe that keeps popping up in there. i manually end the process but the flashing continues. someone said it was a virus and could be dangerous if left alone, but it is very hard to remove. please help. here is my hijack this log:

Hello all. I got on my my laptop today, and after logging in and getting to my desktop, about every 8-10 seconds my toolbar and desktop icons disappear for a few seconds and reappear. This is extremely annoying as it minimizes whatever I'm doing each time it occurs. I don't know what caused this, but I try to keep my laptop well maintained and use the basic XP tools to keep everything running smoothly. This includes making restore points after maintenance work. I've tried to do a system restore, but the only date listed is from the time I logged on after it started doing this. My old desktop had a System Recovery that is available upon boot, but my laptop does not. If anyone could help me here it would be GREATLY appreciated because some applications I can't run and I can't access my college's website because of this. And again, any advice is highly appretiated. Thanks.

A:Taskbar and Desktop Flashing After Upgrade

I had this problem too. I booted into safe mode using the Shift+restart method. then once i was there and youre at your desktop, click the windows logo + X and select device manager. Find your graphics drivers ( for example mine was intel integrated graphics) and uninstall them. if there is an option to get rid of the current drivers do that as well. Once your PC has restarted see if the flashing continues. (mine did not) go back into the device manager and right click your graphics and "click Scan for hardware changes", if nothing appears you should be good i hope this helps!!

If it only flashes when Windows loads, try running the Dell hardware diagnostics accessed by F12 at Power On. If that passes, my only suggestion is to do a factory reinstall from the Dell PC restore accessed by F8 at power on.

If it flashes when first powered on, that suggests a hardware problem. If it is still in warranty contact Dell support, if it is not, sadly the all in ones are basically a one motherboard with everything built on the board (like a laptop).

One final thing you can try, if this has a port for an external monitor, you could try that to see if its just the monitor that is the problem. Otherwise a new motherboard is likely what is required to fix it (or better yet, if this an older machine it may be time for a new one - sorry).

I have:
AMD Phenom 9500+
3Gb RAM
Nvidia 8800GT 512Mb 185.85
Windows Vista Home Premium 32Bit

Playing some games like Morrowind, the wallpaper and Vista sidebar flash through the game graphics. It doesn't make it unplayable, but it is annoying.

What causes this and how can I fix it?

A:Desktop and Sidebar Flashing in Games

Well, for Morrowind, using compatibility mode for XP seems to have improved the situation. Glad they kept that feature.

Hi,

I recently updated to 8.1 from 8. Now when I start my laptop, it boots up normally and loads my desktop screen, but the screen flashes every 10 seconds or so, sometimes more.
In addition to this, all my desktop and taskbar icons are gone/not showing, and when I put my mouse over the taskbar it displays the loading symbol and I can't click on anything. Task manager shows a certain process is using 100% of the diskspace. Should I just kill the process?
Help would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks.

A:Desktop flashing after updating to Windows 8.1

Yes, kill all those Seagate Dashboard tasks. Then disable/uninstall it and see if things are better. May need to reboot also.

EDIT: Also, Indexing Service may cause high usage for awhile after a major update/upgrade.

I got a Dell desktop that won't power up. I've unplugged everything, plugged it back in, held down the power button...nothing. The amber light on the front just keeps flashing, even with the power cord unplugged from the computer.

Any ideas? Bad power supply?

A:Dell desktop amber light flashing

I'd say so. Do you have or know anyone that has a similar computer? That way, you can switch PSUs to see what the problem really is.

Hi bigmacousooners,

Welcome to Tech Support Forum!

I apologize for the delay getting to your log. The helpers here are all volunteers and we have been very busy here lately. If you are still having malware problems, I will be glad to help.

OK, let?s do this first.

Today I started experiencing several issues with my primary desktop pc.

WinXP Pro - Home built system

First thing that noticably started to happen was my taskbar started to flash randomly. Closed out and noticed it was my desktop icons as well. Rebooted and then ran SpyBotand AdAware back to back. Multiple trojans and spyware found and removed. Rebooted. Same symtoms.

It seems everything on my pc is accessable via Task Manager> Run however it only takes 10 minutes or less before the taskbar and icons stop flashing and are gone completely. Prior to that they are 'clickable' and 'accesible' if you can catch them between flashes

Tried running anti-virus (AVG) and discovered 2nd issue, at somepoint around 20 min into scan My computer rebooted.

Tried going into safe mode and running scan again, this time I stayed close and watched (boring) Got this error msg before pc rebooted again"

"DCOM Server Process Launcher terminated unexpectantly ...."

So .... here I am ... I installed HijackThis and here is my log from safe mode:

My friend's laptop is having a strange issue where the desktop flashes on and off with the theme color.

I did a virus and malwarebytes scan, and found nothing.

I turned off all startup programs except a few.

It seems to work fine in Safe Mode, however.

Here is a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pXMqmvZhhw

Does anyone know what this issue is and how to fix it?

Let me know.

Thanks,

David

A:Windows 8 Strange Issue with desktop flashing on and off

Hi davidkimball,

At first glance, I'm suspecting a graphics' driver/card issue but I could be wrong. In any event, could you check the Event Viewer logs to see if there are any entries being logged that are "time-coincident" with the flashing? If some are found, please post a few examples. However, if none are found, do you have an extra monitor you could try?

Hi everyone,

Many thanks in advance for any advice on my situation. I think I've got a malware problem. The symptoms:

Massive amount of IE popups: I only use Firefox, but IE is installed and I've suddenly been deluged with IE popups. One of these was to install SystemDoctor. This may have been clicked by someone in the household. Not me, I swear!

Slow start up: Upwards of 4 minutes to get to the desktop. This is very unusual.

Flashing desktop: Started with the "recover active desktop" screen. This flashed alternatingly with my iconless desktop wallpaper. I've managed to get rid of that screen, but now my desktop flashes between icons, taskbar and wallpaper to just blank wallpaper. The icons appear for only a few seconds before they disappear, so I cannot open any applications from the desktop. I use the task manager to open explorer or desktop, but this doesn't work consistently. Sometimes the applications I open shut down immediately, but sometimes they stay open and I can actually perform work. The desktop is usually flashing in the background this whole time. It usually takes about 10 minutes of fiddling around before I can get an application to stay open and work correctly.

What I've done: I've gone through all of the "Preparation guide", except I couldn't get Housecall to run. It froze my system and I had to restart. I also followed Grinler's "How to remove system doctor" thread. The popups are gone, but I am still experiencing t... Read more

After clicking a link in Yahoo Search the system paused for a while, then the desktop went black and a box flashing in the middle of the screen stated that the system was infected with Spyware. A red X appeared down by the clock. I scanned with MicroTrend Internet Security and removed all infections. I scanned with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and removed what it found. I scanned with Ad-aware and removed what it found too.
Now I can not see any web pages, can not get email, and the clock is running on 24 hour military time.

I had a similar issue with my laptop as well, unfortunately I did not find any way to fix it. Its some software / driver incompatibility. I have a Lenovo Y50. Ultimately I had to reset and upgrade the installation from the initial restore partition from Lenovo, that worked.
You can login using safe mode if you want to take some back ups. It works properly in safe mode.

All,

Can someone please help me figure out how to turn off the icon that suddenly started flashing randomly on the left side of my desktop? It is a box with a speaker with an "X" through it. It flashes vertically up and down the left side of my monitor.

My OS is: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Sound: Confused on this.
Speakers are: VIA High Definition Audio
Sound Card: AMD Catalyst Control
Under this Control Center, says "Audio" Default Audio Device

I was playing a game. Had it on "pause". Went back to it and hit resume with my mouse. Then this flashing mute sound box appeared.

I didn't hit any hot keys that I am aware of and the sound is still functional when I test it.

The Icon in my toolbar does not show "muted" and I have sound.

Did a System Restore. No change. This is extremely annoying.

I'm sure it's probably something simple, but I can't figure it out.

Thank you in advance for your help.

MJ

A:Mute Sound Icon Box suddenly flashing on desktop - can't turn off!

VIA is your regular PC sound. The AMD is ONLY for HDMI audio.

That must be something that a program, most likely the game, caused. Check the game for options.

Well this sure is frustrating. I have little experience with viruses and similar because I have not had the displeasure of having to deal with them. Until now. Yesterday my desktop computer icons started flashing on and off and that was the first sign of trouble.

I use Norton Internet Security and Windows Defender. I have used Norton products basically since there have been Norton products. My Norton subscription recently expired and I just have not renewed it yet. I wonder if Norton has failed in this instance because it is expired or because it simply is unable to deal with this particular problem.

Since I cannot open IE browsers on my desktop (the browser itself will open but it just hangs and will not connect), I have downloaded programs to my laptop and moved them to my desktop on a USB key. I do not have any desktop icons but I can Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open Task Manager, then click on File, New Task (Run?) and type in C: - this will bring up the desktop icons temporarily and I can then click on My Computer and get into my USB key if I do it quickly! The programs I have tried so far are Spybot S&D, Symantec FixVundo, Atribune VundoFix, SpywareBlaster and AVG Anti-Rootkit.

Some identified items are:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\opnklkk.dll - [B] >> Generic.Malware
C:\WINDOWS\system32\geeda.dll - [B] >> Trojan.Vundo
C:\WINDOWS\mrofinu572.exe - [B] >> Generic.Malware

I have not been able to remove any of these. I did go into msconfig Start... Read more

A:[SOLVED] Desktop flashing - vundo, geeda. Crippled computer!

Please disregard this thread. And I will mark it as solved. I back up my entire hard drive once a month with Norton Ghost and decided to go that route. Hello,

My Laptop has been giving me some issue for past 4-5 days. The Start button and my deskstop suddenly started flashing for every 15 secs or so and it does not allow me to start any program from desktop. It is very difficult to even click anything as it keeps on flashing. My Norton never detected anything and so I never knew if it was infected with any virus. Although my firefox would hang a few times and I would have to close it very often for past few weeks. This time it just hung up on me and I tried to close it and then I tried to restart my machine and from then on this issue have creeped up.

One of my friend told me to run the spyware doctor and malware and they both showed that my computer is infected with trojan. The malware removed some of the viruses but still spyware doctor shows some low infections. But my laptop is still not OK as it is still flashing and also closes all the windows that I open with great difficulty including explorer etc.

So with great difficulty I ran the dds and gmer. My laptop was infected sometime in Jan when one of your representative had helped me in cleaning and at that time I had downloaded the dds and gmer and it was already stored in my laptop and I used the command prompt to run and log the findings.

Attached are the arc.txt, attach.txt and dds.

Hi there,

When I turn on my computer (running Windows XP), it seems to boot up fine, but a few seconds after the desktop appears, the screen goes black for a few seconds. Then the desktop appears for 4-5 seconds, then the screen goes black. This just reapeats over & over and the computer seems frozen. There is also a little red 'X' hanging out in my toolbar, who looks especially evil. As time passes, the toolbar becomes warbled.

I rebooted my computer in Safe Mode, which works fine & have been trying to fix it from here all day. I tried following the 8 steps to rid/protect your computer from malware/viruses, but some steps can't be completed in Safe Mode.

Can you please help?

Thanks!

Recently my computer has been a little odd it how it has been running, but I've run ADWcleaner and have always had anti-virus programs on my computer so I just assumed it was me, or the fact that I have more programs on my computer.

However, this past day when I restart my computer, move things around on my computer or scan using Avira I get the error saying that file directories do not exist, even though I can still access them

In addition, dexpot (which I have used for months with no issue) now crashes citing the error above as a reason for why it no longer works. (Dexpot lets you create multiple virtual desktops and its very useful).

On top of that, when I restart the computer the desktop icons will flash a few time (which is normal) but then a minute later start flashing again. Also, my Avira desktop icon disappeared and in my listing or when programs were installed, Avira jumped up to the top, installed the same day that all these issues popped up. I also cannot uninstall Avira (or run the reinstall program for it) citing the same error.

Throughout the day when I closed the lid on my laptop, twice I've had the computer log me out entirely rather than go to sleep as it normally would, and it would take much much longer than it should to log back in, often getting the windows 8 one-colored screen popping up with the 'this is taking a while, please hold on' message.

To top all this off, combofix will not run, claiming that my c... Read more

Hello,
I somehow got a Spydawn system alert popup virus after downloading codecs from the 'net thinking it was safe, i was wrong. I knew i shouldn't have trusted the download but did it anyways.
I managed to get rid of some items that were sent to my desktop plus the system alert that was in my control panel-add/remove programs. I ran ewido, adware, spybot and smitfraud, it doesn't say smitfraud fix..? I even did all of this in safe mode too, but the system alert popup is still flashing in the bottom right corner but now i can not access internet explorer...can't make a connection to the internet.

I don't see anything referring to spydawn in the log.

My Hijackthis log displayed these files that appear to be part of my problem.
I have no internet connection so i can't show you the complete log unless i copy all of it word for word...which i did for just these particular ones that seem suspicious.

Hi Everyone!

I just joined and hopefully I can be of some help for others, but for starters I need to ask for help for myself! Before posting this, I did a search of the forums here but did not find anything identical to my issue.

I have a 10-month old Acer 5100 notebook that will no longer start Windows Vista (Home Premium if that matters).

A few nights ago I noticed the machine was at the "Windows did not shut down properly" screen (black background/white text). Unfortunately I was not around the machine when it got into this mode. The screen showed a list of 5 or less choices - I think the default highlighted choice was to let Windows search the hard disk for errors. I chose this but it didn't seem to start after watching it for several minutes. So being the impatient sort, I rebooted the PC and the same black screen with choices displayed. This time I selected 'Start Windows Normally' but when the system came back up it ends at the same screen again. (I believe the "Windows did not shut down properly" screen I was seeing was not the normal one I've always seen, but a different one with less choices, if that makes sense)

So I said forget this, I have a backup. I tried restoring a backup of the hard drive I made with Acronis True Image (I booted off the True Image CD). I chose to only restore just the C: partition. Both times I tried, it gets to over 50% complete then there's a message about the image being corrupt.

So I shu... Read more

I just recently installed the Windows 8.1 update earlier today. Immediately after the required restart, my computer has not been working properly. As soon as I log on, the desktop flashes back and forth from the desktop picture to the color of the menu background. It flashes back and forth pretty quickly and while this is happeneing I can't perform any functions. When I try clicking on the internet or anything else it is nonresponsive. I tried doing a system restore but after my computer restarted it said the restore was unsuccessful. I tried it again, as well as trying it from a different restore point but neither would work. I then attempted to restart my computer in safe mode but immediately got a pop up saying: "The instruction at 0x35f7649c referenced memory at 0x35f7649c. The memory could not be rewritten. Click OK to terminate the program." After clicking OK, the popup immediately came back and neither clicking OK or pressing the X in the upper right would make it go away and it would just immediatley pop back up and I could not click on anything else while it was up. Also while in safe mode, my desktop shortcuts and desktop picture were again flashing. I'm concerned I have a virus but not exactly sure how I got it or how to fix it. I have Webroot installed and it alerted me to a potential virus a couple days ago but when I tried to fix it, it said something about my product key expiring it and since it wasn't causing my any problems I ignored it. I recently installed zoomtown broadband for my brother. At the time I noticed that "Windows XP Professional" was back on the splash screen, which seemed to me to indicate that something had happened to remove SP2. At my next opportunity, I returned with an SP2 CD to re-install it. In the interval, it seems his son had downloaded Winfixer 2005, the latest Netscape and well, I don't know what else. At the time AVG Free Antivirus and the Zone Alarm Firewall were working, but when I re-installed SP 2 from a disk copy, at the re-boot, after logon, the desktop began to "flash" on and off, with the icons and taksbar disappearing.
Even I could tell this was not good. If I waited, I received warning windows from ZA that it was stopped, but trying to clicking the button to restart the "vector" just led to the re-appearnace of the window. After copying the contents of the HD to a backup HD using Drive Image, I did a repair install of windows from the XP cd, which at least enabled me to get back to a "stable" desktop; however, since the re-install, while I can get to a desktop that doesn't "come and go" like the Room of Requirement, there are still problems:

I cannot create a dial up connection-- the choice is greyed out in the wizard, though the modem is installed and tests OK in the device manager.

Following the re-install, I received a message from the AVG program that it was damged and required a re-installation which I pe... Read more

While I was on the internet, a web page made itself take up most of my desktop. Originally it said all this crap about SPYWARE FOUND OMG OMG OMG!!!, but I edited the source so now it's just a blank page, but I can't get rid of it. I've used Spybot SD, Ad-Aware, AVG, and Xoftspy, and nothing was found, and there's no program running that could have caused it (I checked all the processes in Task Manager, and they're all ok), so I can't figure out how to get rid of it. Any ideas?

I am using windows xp with two user accounts. Both desktops have minimal folders and stuff on desktops. The problem is when either user tries to go from the user page to the individual desktop. Very slow, sometimes paints black screen for sometime, sometime repaints desktop few times, sometimes goes back to user page.. and sometimes actually goes directly to the desktop.. very confusing. Anybody got any ideas what is causing this software behavior.

Ok, I'm sure there's an answer somewhere on Google but I can't seem to phrase it right, so here goes:

When I minimize Chrome or bring up another program like iTunes, I get a blank desktop page with none of my icons on it. Can't left-click OR right-click on it, but the taskbar still works, and if I click Show Desktop, there are my icons again. BUT if I should change anything or open up a program, back to the blank desktop.

This isn't the end of the world but it's damned annoying. Please help!

Hello,

This is my first time posting a question any time any where so please bare with me.

I am running my computer with windows XP. I cannot get it to get past the main page (desktop) when I go down to the task bar where it says START i get an hour glass. I cannot click on any of my desk top Icons and have them do anything and I cannot go into the start menu. I have tried control, shift, escape to see if I can run off a cd this could be of help if a cd is needed to fix the problem. I did try to boot the computer off of a disk thinking perhaps I had a virus (I still think that might be the problem) but I was unable to do this. I reset the boot to start from disk and when it started in dos and gave me my 4 choices I chose boot from disk then it said press f1 or f2 to continue. I pressed F1. when I had the Norton anti-virus disk in there it gave me the choice for normal startup or start up from disk. I tried to choose start up from disk but it wouldn't let me. I tried this several times with 2 different versions all with the same result. My 30 seconds ran out and it started up normally and then got stuck on the desk top page. I tried the same boot with the windows XP disk hoping that it might have a diagnostic bit to it, but no luck I chose boot form disk and it still went to the desk top page and got stuck. Anyone with any information or suggestions on what I might do would be greatly appreciated. I would hate to think that I will have to take it in somewhere only to ha... Read more
