File Explorer Folder and File Options

Q: File Explorer Folder and File Options

I have a lot of music files. I have ended up with many duplicates, perhaps because when I was learning Windows I didn't quite understand the filing system. To date, I am not sure I do! The column # which states the 'Track Number' which to me is undesirable (I have no use for it), seems to be my problem! When there is a track number - it seems to put it first before all else in the 'Title', namely before the title of the song or the name of the Band.... thereby sorting instead of the title of the song, it sorts by the Track number. Even if I change the defaults and take out the Track # column, it doesn't seem to make a difference when sorting - it still insists on sorting by Track number. The only way I can change this, it seems, is by going into each and every individual file property and physically changing this! I hasve already put many hours into this, and it still seems to be an overwhelming job! Is this not what computers are for, to make life easier.
MY QUESTION; IS THERE A WAY TO GET THE FOLDER OPTIONS TO CHANGE ALL THE FILE PROPERTIES IN THE PARTICULAR FOLDER TO DELETE THE TRACK NUMBER (#) INSTEAD OF ME DOING IT SINGULARLY? IS THERE A DOS COMMAND THAT CAN DO THIS?

I would look for a free audio file tag editor. Many will process in batch mode. I haven't used one in a few years so I am not up on the current features. You might find comparisons of the utilities in places like PCMag.com or just search on "best free Windows tag editor". I have a nice sort tool called Fat Sorter but it only works on FAT partitions. The idea being to force a USB stick to sort according to file name. I don't know if there is a similar utility for NTFS.

Hello:

I am using windows XP pro with SP2 installed.

I have somehow managed to loose the ability to open folders in the Windows Explorer pane by double clicking on them. Instead, a double click opens the Search Files feature.

How this happened was NOT by altering viewing options.

I recently went to support at microsoft.com to add print directory functionality to Windows Explorer. I found article ID#272623 "how to add the print directory feature to Windows Explorer. The url for this article is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272623/en-us?FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH

I followed the instructions as closely as I could although it wasn't exactly the same as described.

That is:
after clicking on 'tools' in explorer clicking on 'Folder Options' then 'File Types' and then 'File Folder' I could not find the edit button.
I clicked on ADVANCED then NEW and found the 'New Action' dialog box.
I entered "Print Directory Listing" in the 'Action' box and browsed until I found the file I had created as instructed by the above article.
I then clicked OK and backed out of the rest of the windows.

I tried to undo what I had done but to no avail as I cannot remove the 'Print Directory Listing' action from the list in the advanced File Folder TAB. The edit button is greyed out as is the remove button.

Does anyone know how to remove an action, and after that restoring the ability to open folders in ... Read more

Basically the title. Almost every single time i move ANY file or delete any file, the window im in freezes and the progress bar freezes. Now when i create a new folder the window im in freezes also, but i'd say its only 50% of the time. The temporary solution i found was to go to the task bar, end explorer, and restart it using run. Now when i check back on that folder, whatever action I did (ie delete file) does do what i wanted, its just the freezing. I'm looking for a permanent solution to this and any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi erod49, try looking in your error logs. You have given a good discription of the problem. Tel us your system specs as well.

To get into your error logs,

Left Click on Start Menu.
Right click on Computer and choose manage.
Click on the event viewer.
You now have loads of options to try and pin down what is happening.
Expand the error tab.
Look for things in the last 24 hours.

Other things to look for are updates, has an update caused this. Has your computer autoupdated any of the motherboard drivers.
Have you tried to restore the computer before the error started or has it always been like that.

Hi all,

I have been hammered by several viruses. The result of the attack is that Windows Explorer now shows the file type for an exe file to be a file folder instead of an application. I assume there is something not right in the registry but I do not know where to start looking. Can anyone help? Thanks very much.

You can go back into the Folder's Opitions, click on Folders. then click the Advance button. Check Explore box and OK on out. Other than that, I don't understand what else you could have done.

Why are some options greyed out in folder options >file types>advanced? Most importanly, the Remove option. I manually added an entry in there (Xplorer2, a file managment program which I abbreviated X2) but now there is no way to get rid of it. The remove button is greyed out and still shows up in the context menu when I right click folders. I've tried context menu editing programs but that didn't help. Hello.
I have problem with Windows 7 folder/file listing behavior.
I 'appliy to folders' to my liking(view -> details) but Windows 7 keep changing its file listing to certain folders.
for example.. currently listed with columns
Name | Date modified | Type | Size (+ other options.. applied to all folders)

BUT if 1 folder has too many MP3/Video file(or any type of 1 similar file types) Folder setting reconfigs itself to something like this
Name | # | Title | Cont. artists | Album (it also changed initial 'sort by' & 'group by' settings. it actually removed/unchecked those settings.)

Forgot to mention that these *changed itself* folders were initially displayed correctly.
is there any way to fix this problem?
Thanks in advance. (sorry about ninja edit)

i was clicking around in the folders options menu, at the file types tab. i mustve have done something wrong bcos now all my folders and my drives, whenever i double click it it opens the search (as in the search tool in windows), so then i went to the only available option there: i clicked on advance under "FILE FOLDER" and "DRIVE" and under the actions list there it says "find". which means, i assume that whenever i double click any file folder or drive (usually it would open to its contents) but now it opens up in the search window.

ive tried so many times and clicked on set to default under the file types options, but it doesnt seem to help.
so now whenever i want to open a file folder i have to right click and select open.

any help is very much greatly appreciated!

You know, the bar at the top that gives you the options: Include in library, Share with, Burn, etc. I would like to remove the options I dont use & add ones from xp like Delete & Copy to folder. I realize I can still do these things from the right click context menu but its an extra step, I liked the file & folder tasks pane in xp, wish there was a way to use it on Windows 7. But if I could atleast have that option at the top would be nice. Believe me I been googling for hours & cant find a thing cept other people requesting the file & folder tasks pane from xp. Hi folks,
I have a problem that I hope someone can help me with. I recently downloaded Total Converter, but unbeknownst to me it also downloaded Total Player - which I didn't want or need - but when I realized it was there I decided to check it out. Unfortunately, it screwed up my audio/video file types. Apparently, because its in all-in-one player, after I uninstalled it - because frankly it sucked as a player - it retained the all-in-one component in my file types under Folder Options. Whenever I change a file tape to play on a different player, it changes all the other audio/video file types with it, forcing me to use just one player - which, for certain reasons, I don't want to do. When I try to change an individual file type under Folder Options itself, as soon as I click "Edit" after inputting the file type, I get a message that says the file type in question is assigned to "totalplayer.file." I've looked everywhere on my computer for a file associated with totalplayer, but I can't find one - as far as I can tell, everything was fully uninstalled when I got rid of it. Can someone tell me what's going on and how I can fix this? Thanks. -Steve

Still learning the nuances of Win 7... so much appreciated if someone can shed some light.

In most folders, Windows Explorer shows me the list of files with sizes and dates as expected. (see image "Typical" below)

But (new in Win 7) on some folders it seems to have some knowledge that the folder is music related, and substitutes in some alternate column headings. (see image "LibFmt" below). This is what I'm a bit confused about, and how to control to turn it off. Those headings are rarely useful, whereas size and date headings are fundamental to my version control.

(FWIW, I prefer not add these folders to my music library since it is a great bunch of constantly fluctuating audio and txt/pdf/doc files that I manage between my external hard drives, and various CD/DVD offline storage.)

Changed some Folder Options > View settings so the following are checked:
always show menus
display file icon on thumbnails
display file size information in folder tips
display the full path in the title bar (Classic theme only)
show hidden files, folders, and drives
show drive letters
show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color
show pop-up description for folders and desktop items
show preview handlers in preview pane
use sharing wizard
select the typed item in the view

A:Windows Explorer - .wav and .mp3 file display options

Right click the inside of the folder and click properties. Click customize. You should see a drop down box with "Optimize folder for" above it. Change it to "General Items" and tick the apply to subfolders box. Keep in mind you can't do this when going through the music library. Only when going to C:\Users\[username]\Music.

Hello all , i am new to batch programming.

I wish to have a batch file to read .apk file from folder and then copy it to another folder. Then it should rename the copied apk file to test.apk

eg:
i have a file in folder e:\apps\angrybirds.apk , I want to copy this angrybirds.apk to d:\apps and rename it to test.apk

Here the file names in the e:\apps\ will be changing. So what ever may be the name , it should read the name of the file from e:\apps\ folder , copy it to d:\apps\ and rename it to "test.apk" . Test.apk is a fixed rename

Since 2 days ago I've noticed that I cannot create a new folder with File Explorer by any way possible. Using the taskbar or the SHIFT + Ctrl + N. Even when saving projects with Save File as... and trying to use the "New Folder" text string button does not create any folder. Using CMD prompt or powershell all works well as with Total Commander which i only installed to see if it could create folders and it does. Other programs that auto create folders also works well (i.e. Foobar when transcoding to new unavailable folder). My Windows 8 Pro is original, it's a 4 month old install, I've not made any customizations, no registry hacks, Windows is bare apart from Classic Shell which i only use now as a custom button to go to start screen with the mouse. I'm having an odd problem on a customer machine, for which my Google-fu has reached its limits.

There is one specific folder in the Documents library, which when opened directly (like from a shortcut on the dekstop) only shows "corrupted" files with unusable strings for all file names and extensions.
However, when opened in tree view, the files appear as they should. So at least it's reassuring that the folder contents are still there and can properly be read and changed. But the issue is still inconvenient and worrisome.

I have already tried chkdsk /f on the partition and even mirrored the whole volume to a new harddrive, but that didn't help. I also tried copying the whole folder to another location, it shows up just fine that way as well.

Now I am out of ideas how to fix the problem or to make a proper diagnosis. Any suggestions?

OK, this is my first post here, & I've never joined a Windows forum, or one for people who build their own computers, although I am somewhat familiar with forums, so let me try to give enough info to see if I can clarify my first question & add a few related ones.

I just upgrades a Dell Precision 690 desktop to Vista Ultimate 64, because for some of the work I do in Photoshop CS4, I felt I would benefit from having access to over 3gigs of Ram. The Dell has 2 Intel Xeon 3 gig processors & the compatibility in place to run a 64bit OS, so I bought Vista Ultimate 64, and upgraded to 8 gigs of Ram. That all works fine & I set up several 66 meg files for large format printing the other day, so I'm pleased with the upgrade from that standpoint.

I just need to get used to some pesky details that slow me down & haven't figured them out from searching. I did make my way to the "local group policy editor" and "enable folder options" so this is now giving me my preferred view (details) whenever I open Windows Explorer.

There are 2 related issues I want to ask about. When I open Windows explorer, it opens as a small window & I like to maximize it. It also opens with the folder named after my user name expanded, and the "Computer" folder collapsed. I never store anything in the folder named after my user name, & I store everything in a mapped network drive, that is mapped to show up below the "computer" folder.

I really don't know how to better describe this particular problem in the title so I'll use this space to describe in more detail this annoyance.

I would like to prevent Explorer from scrolling a folder's contents to focus on a selected file or folder. Like, if I have a folder open with quite a few files in it and the file I want to double click to open is on the third row I'll go to double click but with the first click Explorer has scrolled along and the second click lands on a completely different file.
It's extremely irritating.

Hopefully at least one other person out there will get what I'm on about and be just as annoyed by it as I am.

Thanks.

I confess... I do not follow what you're describing.

With Windows Explorer, the folders show up on the left pane as you expand them, and the contents of those folders (both sub-folders as well as files) show up on the right pane. You wouldn't have any files show on the left side, so the only place you can select a file would be on the right side.

Now you say you want to double-click on a file, which I would think MUST be on the right side. When I click on a file on the right side (which by definition must already be visible, so that I can click on it) the only thing that happens is that the selected item lights up, as "selected". That's it. No scrolling of any kind.

Have I described what you're doing correctly? Or does something different happen for you than I've described, at some point in the sequence?
Perhaps you could provide two screenshots, one just before your first click on the file you want to double-click on, showing its initial presentation (i.e. in the third row as you describe).

Then, a second screensh... Read more

The default build on my work machine is really annoying me.

They moved around default locations of several system-type folders.

Specifically, the Libraries folder in File Explorer is not on it's own root. it is instead, under the "Desktop" folder. I want to return the Libraries folder to its own "root" location on the left nav.

Below is an ASCII representation of my current file explorer:

* Favorites

- * Downloads
- * Recent Places

* Desktop
- * Libraries
- * Computer
- * Network
- * Control Panel
- * Recycle

I want it to be:

- * Desktop
- * Downloads
- * Recent Places

* Libraries
- * Documents
- * Music
- * Pictures
- * Videos

* Desktop
- * Computer
- * Network
- * Control Panel
- * Recycle

Any idea how to fix it?

PS - they had also added the User Folder to the desktop in the above tree but your site had a tutorial on how do kill that off the list (so thanks for that)

Is there any way to format folder file display for a group of folders (or subfolders) in file manager? I need to be able to do this to display my contacts properly, for example. It looks like you can either format file inforamation display for all the folders or an individual folder (one-at-a-time), but not a group of folders. If this is true, why?

I don't know if you could create another "type" such as Windows has for photos, music, etc.. I'd look through Brink's tutorials first. If nothing there you might try Windows Annoyances.

If you go four levels down:

C: \ 1 \ 2 \ 3 \ 4 . . . and right-click on 4 to make a: New / Folder . . .

. . . if there are a lot of folders in the right hand pane,
and your mouse is hovering over one of them, after you click on the word "Folder,"
it doesn't do the expected action, to give "New folder" a name, instead,
whatever folder you were hovering over in the right hand pane,
it puts the focus on that, and leaves you with a folder called "New Folder."
You have to then go back, right-click on "New Folder," and rename it.
Alternatively, if you quickly move the mouse, and hover in the left hand pane after clicking on the word "Folder," it behaves as expected, and waits for you to give "New Folder" a name.

It seems to me like the default action should be to leave the focus on, first, giving "New Folder" a name, regardless of where the mouse is.

I see that it acts this way, because in:
Control Panel / Folder Options / General tab / Click items as follows /
I have it set to: Single-click to open an item (point to select), and Underline icon titles only when I point at them
If I have it set to Double-click to open an item (single-click to select), it behaves as expected - but I like Single-click

I think there should be an exception for this, when making a New Folder with Single-click

I have a web page that is distributed to users within the company that has various links to the users machine and company's intranet.

One of them is a file:///d:/FOLDERNAME link that should open up the folder in Windows Explorer. All users of the web page will have this folder on their computer.
However, when I test it in IE, the link does not respond at all. Hovering over it displays the correct link. But clicking on it, or right clicking and selecting open does nothing.

WHAT DOES WORKI can put the URL directly into IE and it opens the directory perfectly.
I can put the link into an Outlook message and it opens the directory after giving a warning. (Micorsoft Office has identified a potential security concern. The location may be unsafe. Do you want to continue)
WHAT ELSE DOES NOT WORK
I tried opening this with Safari and I get a message "You don't have permission to view this page"
MY GUESS
I think this must be some IE Security setting or a permission on the actual folder. I've tinkered a bit with this, but with no real direction and no different results.

Hi

With my folders I usually change the view options to "Details", and order either "alphabetically" or by "date modified" but when I restart these settings are not saved and I have to do it again. Not the end of the world but is it something I can help or is it not?

If you like, you might see if using the tutorial below to set this folder view to all folders may work better for you. You will still be able to set individual folder views afterwards as well though.

When I display a folder containing *.mpg video files and I switch to 'Details' view, file explorer crashes after a few moments. I've read online that this might be related to bad codecs on my machine. Is there a way to definitively test this or is there a trusted site where I can download an up-to-date set of comprehensive Codecs (with instructions on how to perform this Codec 'update')?

I'm running Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit and I use the VLC media player as my default program associated with video files.

I am experiencing a problem regarding ejecting USB devices that may indicate a more fundamental issue with Windows/Explorer within Windows 10.

In the last one to two weeks (possible updates?) it has become increasingly difficult to eject USB devices.

Process Explorer handle search reveals Explorer is keeping open directory handles and thus preventing the ejection of the USB devices. Killing Explorer (or deleting the handles) permits ejection (obviously).

A slightly deeper look into this reveals that browsing to a specific directory will result in handles being opened for all sub-directories. Moving away from that directory and/or closing Explorer does not close those handles, and thus prevents any removable media from being removed "safely".

One of the possible problems is Context Menu hooks, so I've disabled all of those as a precaution but the problem continues.

Is anybody aware of any problems and associated solutions?

As an aside I looked on the Microsoft community forums, with a view to posting there, and commentary around this kind of issue is being directed toward TechNet.

Hello there,

I have a problem with my Windows 8.1 (it's legal, not pirated) with explorer crashing randomly on selecting files or folders. There is no rule to this behavior. It may crash clicking the same file, for a couple of hours and then stops crashing. Then, crashing comes back on other files (or folders). When it crashes no error message pops up - it just closes (and all other opened explorer instances).

Here's what appears in the event viewer:

Recently a change occured (after an update?).
I have a folder containing only 6 shortcuts, linking to devices or to drives, connected to devices, in my home network. Opening this folder takes about 30 sec. It has to do with those shortcuts that link to drives, connected to devices, which are off. Apparently, file explorer, when trying to present the shortcuts, also tries to get some info from those drives. After failing, file explorer nevertheless decides to present the shortcut after long waiting time.
This effect has come recently in W10. In most cases, the effect is there, but in a few cases, the map is opening normally.

A:File explorer slow in opening folder with shortcuts

Additional info:
When the folder is closed for a longer period, then opening gives an instantaneous result.
After closing the folder, and opening again some time after closing, the shortcuts only show up after ca 30 sec.

Hey all, a few days ago my Windows 8.1 File Explorer started acting weird. I can’t create a new folder, nor does double-clicking work to enter a directory. There aren’t any errors, it just doesn’t work. I AM able to create folders via the command line via mkdir though. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this?

A:File Explorer New Folder and also double-clicking problems

I would be inclined to a Windows restore to a date before this problem started, you should have a suitable restore since this only started a few days ago.

Click 'Win key + X - Control panel - Recovery - Open System Restore'. This will take you to a screen listing the most recent restore point(s). If there isn't one listed from before the date this problem started then click the button 'More restore points'. Then start the restore process. Accept the warnings about this being irreversible and let it do it, it may take 10 minutes or so - do NOT interrupt the process. When it is finished you will get a message either 'Successful' or 'Failed - no changes were made'

If it worked, try Win Explorer again. You may need to re-install any updates between the date of your restore point and now. I suggest doing them one at a time and testing Win Explorer after each one since it is possible an update caused this problem.

If the restore didn't work, then uninstall any recent updates one at a time and test again.

NOTE - A restore should not have any effect on your installed programs and data, but it is a good idea to back up your data before starting.

Hi i hope someone can help me, ive been trying different phrases for days tryin to find an answer,
im running win 10 pro 32 and the way i have file explorer set up is in List view in name order,
the problem i have is because there are soo many folders when i right click and copy a name ( ie Tech Reports v23) then right click and make a new folder, that "new folder" is thrown into alphabetical order before i can paste the name in ,, usually as i try ive clicked in an empty location meaning i have to go through the routine of right click then rename then paste,, not fun when you have between 20 to 40 a day to do,,

so can anyone please help me in switching off the refresh while im working in that folder so it only refreshes when i manually right click once ive finished working

many thanx in advance

A:how can i stop file explorer refreshing when i make a new folder?

Hi, If you use the button (3rd right on title bar) to create the new folder, your cursor ends up in the name field of the new folder.
On the other hand, if I rt click empty space and create a new folder, what happens in mine is that the New Folder appears in the middle of the pane once it is created.
(Using list view in alpha order)
In Details view, in alpha order, it appears at the top of the list as displayed in explorer once I've created it.
But in neither of these cases does the cursor end up in the name field, and I have to right click to rename it.

Are you expecting that when you create the folder you should be prompted for its name?
Unfortunately that's not how it seems to work from a rt click new folder create. A bit messy.

XYplorer behaves as I think you wish: the cursor is left in 'New Folder' in the newly created folder, ready for you to rename it.
Some here use the free version, so you might consider using an alternative file manager.

Hello,

I installed Windows 8.1 on a different hard disk, and am setting my most preferred settings on this new installation. According to the attached picture, I noticed that I was able to add this bottom grey bar that states the total size of the files in this folder only (kinda like how it was with XP), and completely forgot how to add this feature to File Explorer.

Do you remember how I did this?

A:Show The Total Files' Size In A Folder In File Explorer

I just read my post and it actually sounds a little confusing. What I meant to say is that I've been using Windows 8.1 and have managed to add that bottom part to File Explorer in Windows 8.1. I installed a fresh version of this same Windows 8.1 on a different computer, and am trying to remember/research how I was able to add that grey bar down there. Have you managed to come across anything like this anyone? Does it ring a bell?

Hi,

I had a problem where my system32 folder was not showing in windows epxplorer. I could not figure out why. I could access it directly by typing in c:\windows\system32 and I could acces it through my command promt, but it simply was not showing in explorer under my windows folder nor was my search function finding it. But my computer was working just fine as far as I could see.

I could not find the solution here on the forums so I checked elsewhere and found the solution to having it display again. So, if you are having this same problem, here is the solution...

Simple, just go to your command promt and type in...

attrib -a -h -r -s c:\windows\system32 (and of course hit enter)

The problem should be solved and your system32 folder should now be showing up once again. Worked for me!

However, I cannot say why this even happened in the first place or how the above command fixes the problem. Perhaps someone else can clarify all this.

And BTW, I was not hiding system hidden folders and files so that was not the reason.

Anyway, I love this forum and I thought it would be a good idea to post this here in hopes that it might help someone else with the same problem.

When trying to delete a file or folder (by pressing the delete button on the keyboard or right-clicking then clicking delete), a box pops up saying that explorer windows has encountered an error and needs to close. When that happens , another box pops up saying the debugger has encountered an error and needs to close.

The result:my computer hangs and nothing happens,it stays stuck in the screen where it happened.Cant click anything nor move the cursor and I ended up pulling the power cord or pressing the reset button.

I think this started to happened when I used a third party software to delete files then windows explorer crashed and the problem started.

I was able to do this in Win7 but can't figure out what to do in W10.
Problem is that I want File Explorer to start with the display at a particular folder. In my case that is D:\Tony\Pictures. And with the contents of that folder in the right-hand pane.
I should add that C: is the label for the SSD on this PC and data is stored in D:
At the moment, in the folders pane it shows five items: Quick Access, OneDrive, This PC, Network and Homegroup. If any of these are expanded then it will remain expanded but only down one level when re-opened. The default selected item of the five is always Quick Access and that is of little use to me.
Thanks in advance!

Hello,

A friend just showed me a weird problem he is having with his computer. He has a folder under My Documents, in which he keeps his work files. He emails these files using Gmail, which he accesses via Internet Explorer.

All worked fine until a few days ago, when he noticed that when he clicked the link in Gmail to attach a file, his folder wasn't listed in the Open File dialog. He looked in Windows Explorer, and could see the folder OK. I tried opening Word and using the Open File dialog there, and the folder wasn't visible.

If he clicks in the address bar, and adds the folder name to the path, it opens the folder, but shows it as empty. I actually has two subfolders. If he adds the name of a subfolder, then the Open File dialog shows the files in that folder.

I checked the permissions on the folder, and couldn't see anything odd. What I don't understand is how the folder can be visible in Windows Explorer, and not in the Open File dialog.

Anyone any ideas? Thanks

A:Folder appears in Windows Explorer, but not in the Open File dialog

Rightclick on the folder where you can actually find it in Explorer, look at the path. That is where it now resides.

If it cannot be found there when browsing in from Computer>C then I'd back up the files in it to a new folder you temporarily create in C root, delete the problem file and recreate it.

Hi,
I have a XP Home SP2 computer and whenever you try to delete/rename/create anything using explorer explorer crashes giving the send and dont send dialog. Meaning i cant do anything. I can use the command prompt to do these tasks however, so i dont think its a hard disk issue. I have tried all of the above in safe mode under the administrator and a normal user and i still get the errors. I have also disabled all non-MS services and all unnecessary startup entries and the problem still occurs. The computer runs Zonealarm Security Suite (Firewall, Anti-virus, Anti-spyware etc...) and Adaware se personal, both which turn up no viruses or spyware apart from the occasonal cookie. So i dont think that it is a virus or spyware infection. This behavior occurs over all system files. Does anyone have any suggestions before i have to reinstall XP?

I will post a hijack this! log if required..

Thanks for your time,

File Explorer usually (not always but most of the time) became not responding for 30-60 seconds when creating new folder or renaming a folder within a library. During it hang, opening another File Explorer and browse to the same folder will see the folder is not created or renamed yet. After 30-60 seconds, the folder is created or renamed without any error.

The issue only happen within a library. If i create or rename folder within the same folder under direct path (e.g. D:\Music\) then there is no hang issue. However, if i access the same folder under library (i.e. Library > Music) then it usually hang.

Tried with other existing Library or create new Library and all had same issue as long as it is within library. Also tried with different hard drive and it was not hard drive specific issue.

Any idea?

Possibly after editing, this may be useful as a tutorial -- but note the problem at the end ...
(sorting in Windows File Explorer may not always work correctly).

I tried to include all of the steps. I did not know how to capture a screen shot of the active
window while the Ribbon was present (to set the View to Details) and
while the context menu was visible (when right-clicking on one of the column headers).

In performing a search, I used the Search Box in File Explorer.
I don't let my PC access OneDrive or Google Docs -- generally,
I do only searches just on my PC or just on the Web.

1. Perform a search.

2. Set the View to Details (if it isn't already).

3. (if the Folder path column is not already present...)
Right-Click on any of the column headers.
A context menu appears.
4. Select More in the context menu.

A Choose Details dialog box appears.

(5. You can uncheck the box next to Folders - to get rid of the Folders column).

6. Check the box next to Folder path - to make the Folder path column appear (you'll have to scroll down to find it).
7. Then, click on the Ok box to dismiss the dialog box and save the changes to the Details View.

8. With the Folder path column now present, click on its column header to sort the listing by Folder path.
(The next picture shows the result after clicking on the Folder path column header.)

It is unfortunate that either Microsoft forces the search to be re-done or it was something they missed on their part.

I am having issues with the way file trees open and scroll in Windows Explorer.

I have explorer configured to resemble the classic Windows file manager look; drive and directory tree on the left, files displayed in a detailed list format on the right.

When I click a folder in the tree to expand its contents, depending on the amount of items in that folder, the left pane usually scrolls. The problem I am having is that there doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason to the scrolling method. Sometimes the folder I am working in jumps to the very top of the window, sometimes it jumps to the middle, sometimes it jumps all the way to the bottom. When it jumps to the bottom, I have to scroll both panes to see the contents.

Is there a way to mitigate this behavior? I'd rather the folder simply stay put, or maybe jump to the top of the window at the worst. Having it drop to the bottom of the window (which seems to be the case more than 70% of the time) gets annoying because I am constantly having to adjust and scroll to view the contents.

Thanks.

I am having this problem recently and I am not sure of the solution.
To solve the problem on the fly one has to start task manager, stop the explorer.exe process, start a new task, type in command.com enter explorer.exe into the Dos window and press enter.
This enables one to carry on using the computer.

Ways to prevent:

I have been told and have found what seems to be the solution:
Type run in the search programs and files(bottom right) click run, enter MSCONFIG, go to startup tab and disable programs that may be causing the problem.
I am not sure I have found the problem program causing this yet but I have disabled a couple of startup programs and the right click freeze seems to be happening less now??
Any comments.

Hi,

I did some messing around with new Themes, and found it annoyingly more complicated than in the XP days, so I used a theme installer, its safe, didn't mess up one thing. But the themes I got didn't please me as planned so I went back to my default Aero Landscape theme. Except one thing changed seemingly forever and I can't change it because Aero ignores change one makes to colors and such apparently.

The change that is left is pictured in the attached picture. When in explorer, when I selected a file or multiple files, a blue rectangle would appear over it, right, like a marker. Now it's just these slightly visible blue lines around a selected file as you can see. I thought putting back the usual theme I use would fix it, but it didn't. Please tell me those new themes or the theme installer (which when uninstalling it, undid the changes it had done) caused this. It's so annoying, I can barely see if what I selected was indeed selected.

I am running Windows 7. For some time now if I double click a file or folder in windows explorer left or right pane it moves up a level to the parent folder and shows the contents of that in the right pane rather that opening the contents of that folder.

I have no trojans or viruses. I am using the QTTabBar.

Any ideas of why this is happening?

Thanks, Tom.

In windows 7 there was this feature I loved when you needed to open a file in a program via standard "File -> Open" dialog and if you had the folder with that file already opened in windows exlorer then you would just click that explorer window and your Open File dialog window would instantly display that folder.Afer upgrading to win8 i lost this function and really want it back.just a detailed process because I know it's hard to understand if you never experienced it:1) You have pressed File->Open in some program and Open File Dialog showing you some random folder.2) You have Target_Folder opened in windows explorer3) You click on the windows explorer window4) Open File Dialog automatically switches to that folder and you can just pick your file there without navigating for 2 minutes.

A:How to make Open File Dialog to show the folder opened in explorer

I don't think that what you are describing is a feature of Windows 7. I cannot duplicate it on any of my Windows 7 machines or VMs.1. I had a Windows Explorer Window open to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft.NET2. I used notepad and used File->Open. The Open File Dialog started in my Documents folder.3. Clicking the existing Explorer Window that was open to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft.NET did not change the Open File Dialog to point at that location.I tried a few different programs (Wordpad, notepad, Paint, and Microsoft Word) and I wasn't able to get the behaviour you described. The feature may have been coming from an add-on program of some sort, or may be specific to programs that you use (and those programs may not support the feature in win8+).

Hi, this will definitely require going into the registry editor. It's a small, but annoying hassle for me.

When I'm dragging something in File Explorer, too often, just by moving the cursor over some folder, the stupid folder will expand, causing me to have to scroll down (sometimes over a page) to get to the folder I want.

So, how do I increase the time from when a folder auto-expands on mouseover? Right now it seems to be in a hair trigger. I guess I'm moving my mouse too slowly, but it frequently expands some random folder I was over.

Ok I'm totally at a loss on how to word this so I'm just going to write it out the best that I can...

First I have a batch file that I'm writing that will convert mp4 files to mp3 files (I have a lot) for a buddies band using ffmpeg.

Here's the code that I'm using:

ffmpeg -i folder\video.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music.mp3"

what I would like to do is add to this so that I don't have to write out this code for every file I have... :/

I have the mp4 files in one folder and than the mp3 files are saving to another folder.

So here's an example of what the code will do if it isn't clear yet.

Folder 1:

video1.mp4
video2.mp4
video3.mp4

what it should do is grab video1.mp4 and convert it.

ffmpeg -i folder\video1.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music1.mp3"

and than move onto the next one

ffmpeg -i folder\video2.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music2.mp3"

and than the next one

ffmpeg -i folder\video3.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music3.mp3"

It's going to have to grab the name from the mp4 file and insert it for the mp3 file.

I can get around pretty good in cmd if it's basic commands but when it comes to something like this I'm a little confused...

Thanks for the help in advance!
I'll see what i can do about searching some more on what I would have to do and if I find the solution I'll post it here if it isn't already answered.

A:Batch File that grabs file names from folder to insert into batch file

A DOS "for /f" loop should do the trick, although changing the filename extension for the output to do everything in one line escapes me at the moment.

Perhaps you could do a dir .\folder\*.mp4/s/b > mp4s.txt, then make a copy of that and edit each line to rename the file to the destination name, and save it as mp3s.txt. Then you just feed both the source (mp4s.txt) and destination (mp3s.txt) filesnames into the for /f loop which handles the ffmpeg conversion.

Quite a crude solution and you'd have to handpatch the destination filenames, but i can't think of how to get a source mp4 filename and then just change the extension.

I cannot copy or paste jpeg files from my computer to my SD 2GB cards. Also, I get this msg when I try to print jpeg files. Using Adobe Elements I am able to archive these files. Oddly enough I can attach and send these jpeg files via email. Prior to August '08 was able to do these tasks without a problem. I suspect that there is a software compatibility problem since this problem came on suddenly (maybe iTunes?). No problems importing jpeg files from SD cards. I've looked at several sites on the internet but none seem to have the right solution for my problem. THANKS for any help that you can provide! -Stu

A:Error copying file or folder; cannot copy img the directory or file cannot be created

This has caught me more than once.

The problem is a limitation on the number of files and folders allowed in the root folder of a FAT16 file system (as for a memory card) of 512. (Note, this number is reduced much further if longer file names than 8 characters are used, as most people will want to).

When transferring the files onto the card, new files will be rejected when you hit this limit.

So keep your files in separate folders, so they are not all in the root folder.

For files and folders in root it might be worth keeping your filenames under 8 characters in length so you can use the full 512 files on root folder.

Hi,
I would like to create a .bat to copy files from source folder to destination folder.
Some files in source folder already exist in destination folder (Same name)
What I would like is that files existing in destination folder to be rename to f.eks filename_BAK.extension.
Eksampel.:
Source folder include. FileOne.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt
Destination folder include. FileOne.asp - (NO FileTwo) - FileTree.txt
Result. FileOne.asp (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileOne_BAK.asp) - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileTree_BAK.txt)
Now in desination folder.: FileOne.asp - FileOne_BAK.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt - FileTree_BAK.txt
Files in source folder are placed in different folders, but in same structure in destination.

I can see and log in to the share without any problems, but if I try to create a folder that is longer than 8 characters, I get the following error message:

I only have this problem when I use my Windows 7 machine. XP and Ubuntu work just fine.

I am having trouble linking my hotmail account with Outlook 2007.
It was working last week just fine but I deleted my profile and all the .pst and .ost files in the c:\outlook folder because I wanted to start outlook from scratch and reconfigure all my email accounts in outlook. I did back up all the .pst and .ost files on a thumb drive before I deleted from my HDD. I even uninstalled and deleted outlook connector.
I reinstalled outlook connector today and went through the steps of adding my hotmail account. After I click finish a new folder pops up in the left pane with my email account but when I click on it, it reads "the set of folders cannot be opened. the file hotmail.ost is not an offline folder file."
I have tried deleting my profile and the .ost files, and I bought advanced exchange recovery but that failed to fix it. I have spent the past 3 hours trying to figure this out with no luck. I moved the old hotmail.ost file that I saved back into the outlook folder but that didnt help either.
Any suggestions?

I've been searching the last 2 hours on a solution to my problem & have yet to find an answer so I thought I would post it here.

Description of Problem:

I have a folder dedicated for songs (guitar tabs & chords) that are .htm extensions, however I would like to move these songs to the/an appropriate Artist folder.

For Example: (current DIR layout)
Folder \ songtitlewithnospaces.htm

Ideal DIR layout
Artist Folder \ songtitlewithnospaces.htm

I have a listing or can create a listing (.txt file) of the songs by the artist, I need a way to search this .txt file for the song name (with no spaces i.e. songwithnospaces.htm) and move the file to the corresponding artist folder.

I would like to create a .bat file for this as I have 1000+ songs and to search/find & move each song file to the correct artist folder would take more time than I have.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

So if you deleted it, it should be in the recycle bin as long as it hasn't been emptied. If the person who sent you the file deleted it, they should have it in their recycle bin.

I have recently changed from Win7 to Win10. My habit is to view folders/files with small icons with the "navigation pane" turned off. This gives me a compact listing of all my folders and files. In all previous versions of windows, including up through Win7, folders and files were arranged alphabetically top down, going to the next column after that column was filled. Now the folders and files are arranged in rows going across the top of the window and going to the next row when the first is filled.

Now, this is not really a big deal, and I imagine it's something I can get used to, but as I am looking downward to go through the alphabet and not across, it takes me much longer to find what I'm looking for.

I know there are lots of ways to customize the appearance of folders and files in File Manager, but I cannot find any way to change the pattern to go back to columns not rows.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm sure there's a way to do this, but it's out of my realm of digging in windows.

What I need essentially is a Symbolic Folder that will scan a set directory and only return specific file types.

For example, I have five folders with .jpgs, .psds, and .txt.

What I would like is to create a folder that when opened will only show me .txt files from those directories.

Is there a program, or service that will allow me to do this?

A:Symbolic File Folder with Specified File Types?

This is quite easy to do with Windows Search.

This example is how to create a shortcut to all images on chosen folder (location), inclusive all its subfolders:Open the location you want to use as root. In this example I'll use Libraries
Type to search field kind:image, click Save Search:
.

.
Name the search as you want to, click Save:
.

.
Now when you open the folder %USERPROFILE%\Searches, you'll find shortcuts to all your predefined searches:
.
Using the same method you can create shortcuts to almost anything. Some search criteria examples:ext:pdf = all PDF-files (extension .pdf)
ext:jpg = all JPG-files (extension .jpg)
datemodified:‎01/‎09/‎2010 .. ‎31/‎10/‎2010 = all files modified between 1st of September 2010 and 31st of October 2010 (notice the date should be in default format used by the current Windows user account)
kind:music = all music files

When I tried changing the icon of 'File Folder' in 'Folder Options' --> 'File
Types' , by mistake I made 'find' in 'Action' list ('Advanced' button) the
default. Now I am unable to remove it. So whenever I try double clicking a
folder, a search window appears.

Now I don't want anything in the list to be made default. System does not
allow me to do so.

What I tried to do and how it failed?
1. I tried adding a new action item with the application as 'explorer.exe'
and made it the default. After this whenever I double click a folder it opens
in a new window. Note that the Browse folder settings in General tab of
'Folder Options' is still 'Open folders in the same window'

2. There is a checkbox in 'Advanced' settings for 'File Folder' with label
'Browse in same window'. This option is unchecked and the best part is, this
is disabled.

3. Even file folder is not present in file types..
How do I go back to my old settings where in no item in Action list is set
as default?

Anytime I drag a file(s) in a folder window, a translucent, oversized icon follows the mouse pointer, partially obscuring up to 4 nearby items.

Can this effect be disabled? I'm sure somebody at MS thought it was slick idea, but it just gives me a headache. I haven't found a setting that controls it -- maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot. (Am guessing, while this isn't an "animation" per se, it's in the same general category.)

In windows Explorer files of the extention .avi will have an icon that is that little film strip with a screen shot from the video file. Matroska files (.mkv) only show a generic icon in explorer? How can i fix this so that the Matroska file will show the screen shot from the video file as is does with avi files in windows explorer? I have Home Premium? Thanks:)

A:Matroska File to show screen shot as icon like an avi file does in explorer

I wrote a similar post about mov files in here
Have a quick read at it (to understand what you're doing and why it's the way it is), then grab some matroska directshow filters. There's a list here: http://www.matroska.org/downloads/windows.html

P.S: Keep in mind the filter sparses the mkv file only (aka the container), it does not decode the audio or video stream inside of it. If you're only getting a filter but can't see the video, it would be because you're missing the codec (compressor-decompressor) for the video stream. I'm mentioning it because mkv files are usually encoded using codecs for which the avi container is not suitable (for example H.264 or AC3). If that's the problem, be sure to get codecs too (for example ffdshow-tryouts for H.264, or AC3filter for AC3).

Not sure if this is an annoying bug that everyone knows about by now, but I'm hoping there's a setting or registry value I've overlooked.

Here is how to reproduce and some loverly pictures.

1. Open File Explorer to a folder with multiple files and select one with left click.
2. Right click on that same file and you'll get your normal context menu.

3. However, if you right click any other folder or file besides the already selected ones, you will clear the selection and not get the context menu for the file or folder that you right-clicked on.
In previous versions File Explorer behaved rationally and a selection event was presumed when right-clicking an unselected item.

Are we out of luck until MS fixes this or is there a remedy?

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

Hello Everyone,

I have kind of an odd question, I have been looking into changing file type icons when I came across an interesting conflict.
I would like to be able to change the file type icon for all .exe files to the same file type icon within a file explorer. If you were to try to do this, all icons that are associated with each .exe program becomes the same icon no matter where they are located.

The thing is that usually when I am in a file explorer the .exe files are installers and when I have .exe files in places like on my desktop, in the start menu, and in the taskbar, they are for launching already installed programs.

Can anyone think of a possibly way that could solve this conflict easily with some kind of setting or software.

I thought maybe something with shortcuts but that turned out to not work for me.
I also believe that .ico icon files have multiple sizes within them but I don't think there would be a realistic way to edit each of them for all the programs installed.

Has anyone else ever tried something like this? or have any solutions that I am not aware of?
Thank You

A:Changing .exe File Type Icons In File Explorer But Nowhere Else

File Explorer is on Windows 8/8.1, renamed from Windows Explorer on Windows 7 back to Windows95/Windows NT4.

Usually an .exe file for running a program will have its own icon, right-click a Shortcut, Properties, Change Icon to see what the .exe file has in it. Some programs may have a separate icon in their Folder in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86). If no icons are found Windows will put up a panel with a number of choices but they are more generic, mostly for Windows things.

Installable .exe files will have more of a generic icon and are of only a few types.

Hi - I have tried now for 2-3 hours trying to delete an .mkv file from my "Downloads" folder It says the file is in use by Windows Explorer and cannot be deleted I have tried deleting it using Del command prompt as me and as Administrator (I am the Admnistrator, there are no other users) - no luck I have tried Safe Boot and then deleting - no luck I have tried rebooting many times and then deleting - no luck Any ideas?
