File size different between Explorer and Hard drives Prop

Q: File size different between Explorer and Hard drives Prop

We have a MAC machine running on BootCamp for Windows 8.1 as well as the MAC. It's been runing for almost 1 year. We found that on the Windows side (C:\ - BOOTCAMP) that this machine is only 4GB free space out of 371 GB. So we are starting to troubleshoot to find out what causing this.
We checked on C:\ drive (including Hidden file/folders) and select all the files and right click PROPERTIES to see the size and we found is 306 GB. So we are missing 66 GB !!!
Any ideas what causing this?
BTW ... we are running Windows 8.1 and we backing up via File History to external network device. But we now the fact that if the machine is not connected to the network, it backup to local disk. Now, we did setup to cache offline 5% of the disk BUT could be this is the issue?

I'm appreciated your feedback.

Bootcamp is a Virtual Machine. It will expand or shrink the VM, depending on the needs.

Also the fact that Mac OS-X uses a more efficient way of handling Drive Space use than Windows does.

Easiest way to find out is to click on "About this Mac" and "More Info". Mac OS-X 101.

Disk Inventory X is one of the better programs out there that shows you what is using up drive space for Size of the folders and how many files.

I have a question in regards on how to format disk drive (NTFS) to cluster size 128kb or 256kb.

people talks about 64kb+ cluster size for a raid array, which isn't what I want. under disk management when formating two dynamic drives together to create raid 1 or raid 0 single volume, maximum is only 64kb.

is it possible to go above 64kb?

I went to SSDs on all of my computers some time back, but I still use WD RE4s and 2.5 inch WD Black HDDs for a variety of backup tasks and for storage in which the data will not be accessed for a period longer than is ideal to use a non-powered SSD for. On my Macs I am using El Capitan with OS X Journeled, GUID map, and FileVault 2 encryption. On my SP3 and desktop I am using NTFS with Win 10 64-bit Pro with BitLocker enabled on both machines. The OS and third party programs are currently up to date.

I've generally used ExFAT and the GPT partition map because it allows me to use it on all of my computers, and I have always used the default cluster size. However, I do not think the default size was the best decision for me because the size on disk is over TWICE the actual size.

If I am correct, the default Win 10 cluster size is 4k, and that going BELOW that is useful for the drives I have many smaller files on. Is this correct? Additionally, the smaller cluster size I go, the slower the drive will write, correct? Also, if so, how low do you advise going? I am still torn between reformatting outright or trying one of the programs that allows changes to a currently in-use drive. Any advice? Thanks!

A:Hard drive cluster size issues? Size on HDD over twice the actual size

For the a sector size of 4k to double your disk utilization you'd have to have a really tiny average file size. From your numbers shown the average size if I calculate it correct is 132kb (unless you have 1 massive file and 17,711 tiny ones) so a 4k size will make no difference.

You could check with TreeSize Free - it will tell you if you right click on the status bar and select it to be displayed.

EDIT - having checked the default for ExFat is 128k for drives over 32GB ( and when I tried to format an external USB drive that is what it picked. According to macbook - Reformat exFat with specific Device Block Size and Cluster Size - Ask Different OSX picks 128k also.

So if you had 128k as your cluster size minimum disk utilization would be 17,772 files * 128k = 2.17GB. So if all your files were just over this (say 132k which looks like your current average size) you would be using 4.44GB add a couple of big files and it could easily be 6GB.

I would check your average file sizes and also your current cluster size (you can use chkdsk as described in the AskDifferent link above).

The default is 4k for NTFS and I have always formatted ExFat as 4k also. Depending on your current setting reformatting 4k looks like a good idea.

As for how - copying the data elsewhere, formatting and then copying it back has to be the easiest, safest and most likely fastest way. You'll also get the disk defragmented automatical... Read more

Edit: I simply wiped the disk and changed it to MBR through the command line. I don't think I need any more help right now.
I received a new laptop today with windows 10 on it. So I downloaded rufus and used it to make a windows 7 installer. I chose MBR partition format. When I made it partway through the install I could not select a partition because "hard drive is GPT format".
I could make a GPT windows 7 install but to my understanding that only works with Fat32. And to my understanding fat32 can only make a file 4 GBs in size. That seems like that limitation would be a huge problem. I have a 7 gig .rar file of a game I was planning to play on the new computer but I don't think I could transfer it to the fat32 hard drive.
I need some help here. If GPT can only be used with fat32 and therefor have a 4GB file size limitation, then is there any way I can get my 1TB hard drive to MBR? I'll admit that there's a lot I don't understand about this.
I have a UEFI bios by the way along with a legacy mode option for windows 7.

A:GPT hard disk file size limitation

What is the Hard Disk size?
GPT and MBR are partitioning schemes, FAT32 and NTFS are File System types that can be used to store files/folders on the partitions independently if the disk is partitioned as MBR or GPT.
I think the confusion is because when creating a bootable flash drive to install Windows on a UEFI system with GPT you need to format the flash drive as FAT32.

So this is a very strange problem and I've scoured the internet for hours looking for any explanation, but have yet to find one.

So when I open up some sort of folder the explorer shows the normal details per file, including file size. The strange thing is that there are no longer and commas separating every 3 digits. For example, a file that used to read a size of 2,453,242 KB in the explorer now reads a size of 2453242 KB. Needless to say this isn't stopping me from using my computer, but its extremely annoying. Note that when I bring up the task manager, the RAM being used by programs also has its commas missing.

I'm using the most currently updated Windows XP and to my knowledge I haven't installed anything before or since this happened a day or two ago. The only non-perfect operation that happened around this time is my ATI Radeon graphics driver gave me a small issue and restarted its drivers after playing Oblivion. But it seems fine and back to normal. Needless to say I've also restarted my computer and the explorer shell itself and nothing seems to turn it back to normal. I don't want to do a system restore yet.

Anyone else ever hear of something like this?

This problem is very annoying.

In Windows XP when I open a folder, a music folder for example, it would display the total number of files in the folder and the total file size. Windows 7 does not do this, which is fine, I thought, I'll just highlight all the files with Ctrl+A, doesn't work, I have to click on 'Show more details' which is hassle.

And why such a arbitrary number 15?

Is there a registry modification to increase this number? To say, 9999?

I installed Windows 8.1 on a different hard disk, and am setting my most preferred settings on this new installation. According to the attached picture, I noticed that I was able to add this bottom grey bar that states the total size of the files in this folder only (kinda like how it was with XP), and completely forgot how to add this feature to File Explorer.

Do you remember how I did this?

It is likely a Fat32 file system....... I believe the limit is 1 byte short of 4 gigs

Just today this just started happening. Have no clue why, but suddenly explorer.exe began using all the resources it could and kept growing in size, RAM and virtual memory. My external drive also acted like it was being read, but I wasn't doing anything to it. I haven't downloaded any new software other than VLC.
It seemed to only do this while clicking on one .avi file I had Azureus not download. The other files are fine, but simply clicking this file makes the drive start doing what it was doing, and Explorer started eating the system. The file gives can in use error when I try to delete it also. I thought it could have been that file, either a corruption or bad sector, but the problem popped back up when I was transferring a few more .avi files from my laptop drive to another external drive. I'm pretty sure I didn't click or hover over any files I didn't download completely. The same symptoms occurred, but neither of the external drives looked like they were being read. Since I read from the laptop drive, maybe that was in use, but I'm not sure. Ending explorer and running it again fixes the problem until I click the problem file again. Also no new processes running in the background. Is there a simple solution or explanation to this problem? Thank you.

A:Explorer using 100% CPU suddenly with external hard drives

Well the problem is with the codec information that was with the avi the simplest solution to that is to delete the avi file in question, it will not work it will just keep doing the same thing over and over there is no fix for that problem unfortunately.

Hi all,

so I've been trying out build 7100 for a few days on my system, which includes quite a bunch of hard drives (usually around 8 of them) and ever since I got to run Windows 7 for the first time, most HDDs are listed as "Local Disk" in its explorer, while they're obviously supposed to be named something else (screenshots included below).

The thing is, even when I try to rename them, nothing changes in explorer. But there's a twist. If I have a look at the disk management utility in the control panel, everything looks fine! Labels are here and even get updated as I try to rename them through explorer although nothing seems to happen.

I've really tried out a lot of things already (ie : matching the security permissions of a working disk with the other ones, checking out if this has to do with the various sata chipsets those drives depend from) and I'm definitely running out of ideas. I couldn't find any consistent link between the working drives until this hit me right in the face... The only drives actually showing their names in explorer are of the same size, which is also the biggest one (1 Tb)!

Did anyone else ran into in this issue? Any ideas how to to fix this?

Oh yeah, one last thing : this only seems to affect my Sata drives. My IDE DVD drive and my usb flashdrive show labels correctly. And just in case, all those drives are showing up fine when I boot Windows XP instead.

A:hard drives labels not showing in explorer

But i only have SATA Drive, before 2 days there is no such problem.
Now I can see drive names in Disk management of Windows 7 and normally in Windows XP (Dual Boot)

Last thing, i run a full pc scan by eset nod antivirus before this problem

Since upgrading from windows XP to windows 7 I've experienced several issues:

When browsing windows explorer it's quick to return the following error message

Usually after closing the program it then creates further issues such as right click lock ups on sub folders which I have to start task manager to physically end task on a sub folder that's stopped responding just to get rid of the window.

Another issue which seem to be permanent is when I resume computer from stand by or hibernation it shows BSOD then restarts I'm not sure if all these problems are related but I eventually plan on fresh formatting my pc but I'm just hoping that I won't encounter or experience the same issues.

Intel Pentium 4 2.93GHz

Thanks for help

A:Explorer right click lock ups and hard drives not always displaying

Since you're getting BSODs and plan a clean install, you'd be best off to go that route right away, rather than spend a lot of time trying to clean this up.

To bump performance a notch or two, add more memory, as 1GB is slim for running Windows 7 without a lot of hard drive thrash.

One of our users has reported that their mapped drives were missing. Our user's mapped drives are all being pushed out by group policy so at first this was not an unusual report.

Upon investigation I seen the drives were in fact missing so I did a gpupdate to refresh the group policies which normally fixes the problem. This time it didn't, my backup plan is normally to manually map the drives needed until we figure why the group policy is not working.

Here is where things get weird:

When I go to map the drives, they are all already mapped. Then I find out from the user that they are all showing up correctly through their applications such as MS Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro. They can also access all of their files normally through each app. But they are not showing up in file explorer when we go to 'this PC'. A reboot normally fixes the problem though the user is starting to get a little annoyed of having to reboot each time.

Anyone have any ideas of what could be causing this?

I believe I have contracted some kind of hidden virus. I'm at a complete loss as to what to do. I've purchased SEVERAL anti virus programs, anti spyware programs, etc....

nothing seems to work.

i've completely reloaded my system 4 times now (and even bought a new hard drive for a fresh install), i've spent hundreds of dollars on a couple of new external hard drives to keep all my business files intact.

it began with one of my extra drives shutting down every time i accessed it. it was a storage disc for my office files.

then, the problem began happening on all of my external hard drives and then, it appears, any folder that contained video files. i noticed a suspicious looking file called thumbs.db (which is usually normal, but this one is kind of greyed out- it looks different than what i'm used to seeing).

i thought i had the problem licked until today when i reloaded my system yet again (and now it takes about 10 minutes for the black screen to come up with "windows xp" and finally load).

i also spent 2 and a half hours on the phone with microsoft, who couldn't help me either

so, if anyone can help i will be eternally grateful!

i'm very new to this posting stuff so, if anyone could help could you please email me directly at [email protected] so that i don't miss your help?

A:Connect hard drives for file transfer

Actually the easiest way to do this is to pull that drive from the machine and make it a slave drive on another machine. There are other ways but let me ask, how many files and how much disk space are you trying to recover? If it's small then you needn't go through that hassle.

Whenever I try to do a completely normal (explorer) copy of large files between two ordinary internal disk partitions, explorer reports (and takes) 90% of infinity to do it! It starts out telling me it'll take 20 mins, then 40, then 60, then 240, and on and on. Obviously, I usually cancel them, since I don't have weeks or months to copy a single file!

We're talking about a 4 GB or so file or folder, so it really shouldn't be a big deal. I am NOT copying from a CD/DVD or to/from a network; these are ordinary files on ordinary disks.

I have gobs of memory available (1GB installed, very little in use at the time). My disks are quite fast (10,000 RPM SATAs). My CPU is quite fast (3.2 GHz, hyper-threaded Intel P4). Every other copy of smaller files completes very quickly. I have only an ordinary anti-virus util running, and I've tried completely disabling it and it made no difference.

Recently I formatted all the hard drives on my Gateway MX6214 Notebook computer.

When I attempt to install Windows XP it says the Setup cannot continue because no hard drives were found.

Obviously, the hard drives are in working condition because I also checked with some bootable diagnostic tools and the hard drives are check. But now it seems the "internal?" drivers on the hard drives have also been deleted during the format, so WINXP cannot recognize during installation. Same goes for installation of the OS Ubuntu =/

I do not have the original diagnostic cd that came with the notebook.

Are there any solutions anyone can point me towards?

I currently have 2 PATA hard drives installed in my system that both run off the same IDE ribbon cable. My MSI MS-7184 motherboard has 2 SATA connections and 2 SATA power supplies available. Would I benefit much by upgrading my hardrives to SATA ones? One of them holds the operating system and programs etc (160GB) and the other stores my mp3's (320GB). Would there be much speed gained or not enough for me to notice? Also would data be transferred faster if my PATA drives had one IDE cable each instead of sharing one? Thank you for taking the time to read my query.
I just restored a bkf file and the restored folder is smaller than the original bkf file. I need to delete the bkf file which is 12 GB but don't want to until I am sure all the files were restored.
I would like to figure out which files were not restored.
Is there any way to figure out which files are missing. After I restored the files, the report says that hardlinks could not be transferred but does not the size of them. The bkf file size is 33,754,314 bytes larger than the restored file, but the bkf file "size on disk"is 19, 099,648 bytes smaller than the restored folder!!!
When I left click on the bkf file and select properties it does not tell me how many files are in the bkf file only the bytes.

Is there any freeware/program that will tell me the number of files in the bkf properties dialogue box? Or even better let me look at the size and number of files in the three main folders I backed up.? I can not access/explore the bkf file only restore it. That would solve my problem. My backup tree is C:sharedhardlinkdata>beth>documents and settings>beth> and then 3 folders underneath
Thank you

I have MS Access 2010 & have a database that has been about 45 MB in size for 2 years. About a month ago I noticed it now is 67 MB. I compact & repair every time I save it which is twice a month. I've gone back & did a compact & repair on the 67 MB file but it does not change.

I must have looked at & changed something without realizing it. The actual number of records appears to be correct. How can examine and/or compare tables or other internals between the two sizes? I've seen a program called AccdbMerge come up on a few Google hits & was wondering if anyone ever used it?

And & all suggestions would be appreciated.

A:Access file size increased in size by 50%

The only reason I've seen for a database to get very large is when there is a picture (JPG file) used in a form. Apparently Access does not do a very good job with storing this type of data. Perhaps your database has an image stored as a data item in a table (or some other place.) Other than idea why you should see such a large size.

Alternately, you can create a new empty database and then copy each object from your current database to the new one, one at a time, and check the size of the new database after each copy. That will at least identify which object is causing the problem.

After doing a lot of file management (backups, deletion of unnecessary files, defrag, etc) I was able to recover a substantial amount of space. When opening up Computer, I noticed that the size was only registering about 70GB free (out of 500). Knowing this couldn't be the case (I had found the directory my screen recorder saves to, apparently it records lossless avi at 1gb/minute) I did the usual right click on all the folders in root:\ and the size count was only 162GB, with hidden and system folders viewable. I found TweakNow PowerPack 10, which I had used for its Disk Usage Analyzer. That came up with only 94GB used.

After those installs, the disk size jumped to 94GB free.

Attached is the Systweak file structure (only root:\*, so nothing personally identifiable), the [email protected] Hard Disk diagnostic (can't make much sense of it, I'm a computer guy but not that far into the really specific components), and the main Computer window and properties.

Occasionally, I need to look at my file trees in File Explorer, to see what's where, move stuff around, etc. It'd be helpful if I could display a tree in File Explorer, on screen, and then print a hard copy of what I'm looking at, so it remains accessible as I move to other trees, files, etc.

I'm old enough to remember the old Print Screen command, and there's even still a key labeled that on my keyboard, but of course it won't work. Or at least it doesn't print screen when I click it.

Is what I want to do possible in Win 8.1?

A:Can I print a hard copy of a file explorer tree I see on screen

Sorry for the confusion, but all the print screen button does is take a snapshot of your screen and saves into the clipboard so you can do something with it.
You can paste it into mspaint for example, save it as a jpg and print it that way.
Of course Windows 8.1 has a wonderful utility called the Snipping Tool that allows you to take full or partial captures and save them directly. Just search for it from the start screen.

As you see in the screenshot Explorer just sits there trying to load the folder I've requested. This happens, seemingly, randomly, at least I haven't been able to find a pattern. If I unmount all network drives the problem disappears. Sometimes it loads within a few seconds while some other time it can keep loading for several minutes preventing me from doing anything useful. As you can imagine this is very frustrating. One solution to temporarily bypass this is to cut the network connection and open the folder I need and then reconnect the network.

-Windows 10 Home/Pro.
-ZyXEL NAS540 with latest firmware (I've gone through several firmware updates since purchase).
-Other devices mounted as network drives for easy access (e.g, Android phone, Shield Android TV, etc.).
-Router Netgear WNR3500Lv2 with Tomato firmware 132 by Shibby (Same as NAS, gone through several firmware upgrades/-downgrades, problem persists).

The router is Master Browser and WINS Server and these features are turned off on the NAS. ipconfig /all shows WINS Server as (router).

As per instruction on the link below, I have modified registry to increase page file size.

I have put each 5,000 MB so page file size should be around 15 GB according to me. But when I look at "performance" tab, it shows limit only 3765392 so around 3766 MB.

I checked under settings >> Performance Options of Advance computer properties, there it shows Total Paging Size 2046 MB. But when I click change, there it contains custom size of 5,000 MB.

So finally I just want to know if my paging file size have really increased to 15 GB or it's just 2046 MB as it shown there.

A Moderator has Moved your thread to our Windows 7 forum as there are some things you need to know in order to

rescue data you probably need and some other stuff you shouldl be aware should arrive soon

My hard drive won't boot, and SMART says it's 'BAD, backup and replace."

I can't replace it now(no money), so I was wondering if there's a way to get Windows 7 completely pulled off the drive from its sectors and transferred to another storage drive WITHOUT the hard drive connected to a motherboard, no BIOS, etc. Just independent of its self, with the jumper/power to start it, can data be physically removed from it without it being connected to a motherboard?

Is there any way something like this can be done?

Because here's what I want to do ...

I want to clear the hard drive and keep its files, the OS, and other files on it, move them to another storage drive, then boot them from, say, a 64GB USB drive, and install them on a new hard drive from there. Will something like this work?

Assuming I boot from the USB with a new, functioning hard drive installed, can I just sort of "move" the OS to the new, empty hard drive to install it there? What are the steps of doing this exactly?

I'm not skilled/experienced in this area at all.

I am running Windows XP SP3 right now on a Lenovo 7650-ELU and experiencing some odd problems. For some reason, the laptop I have will not recognize USB Flash Drives that I put into it or External Hard Drives. I know that the USB ports work correctly, because I have plugged in optical mouses and keyboards that work. I searched the forums and didn't see anything like this.

It's odd how when I first insert them, it makes the sound and shows the icon in the taskbar that would allow me to safely remove the device, but nothing else. So far, I have gone into the device manager and uninstalled all the USB ports and restarted hoping this would solve my problem, but it continues to do the same thing.

If anyone has some helpful advise, please post. I appreciate all the help.

A:Replacement hard drive showing wrong capacity in File Explorer

This is normal after a cloning. The partition needs to be expanded. If you look in disk management is there a partition after your Windows C: partition? If there is then you will need to use a third party partition manager to first move the partition after C: and then expand C:.
Partition Wizard can do the job. All steps are virtual and will not complete until Apply is clicked. This lets you back out of any steps if a mistake is made.
If there is no partition after C: you can expand it in Disk Management by right clicking C: and selecting Extend Volume.
Can you post a screenshot of Disk Management?

When I right click a file to view it's properties there are two different values shown: one for file "size" and the other for "size on disk". The second value is always larger. Could someone please explain what the difference is because I'm in the process of allocating space for backed up user data on a network share and I need to multiply the average file size by the number of users to get an estimate of how much space to allocate to that share. Thanks in advance!

A:file size vs size on disk

Disks are laid out at a base level in sectors, and then in clusters which are groups of sectors.
For example, on a 32GB partition (Fat32) the cluster size is 32000 bytes. On a NTFS system, the standard size is 4K.

Files can only be on a cluster boundary. Therefore, in this example, a file that is 16,000 bytes (file size) will be 32,768 bytes (on disk). And a 40,000 byte file (file size) will be 65,536 bytes (on disk).
Or, on a NTFS system, a 5,000 byte file will take 2 clusters, or 8,192 bytes (on disk)

Do Start > Run > Command and at the prompt enter

After it runs, the "xxxx bytes in each allocation unit" is the cluster size.

I've got an old Dell Inspiron 8200 PC that the office uses as shared storage, printer server etc, and it's been having issues seeing USB drives correctly (Although the laser printer that's on USB has never ever had a problem!?!)

Yesterday it dawned on me that instead of plugging in the extra 2 drives I need I could put another couple of hard drives in, in place of the optical drives, that are never used on that machine.

So after a bit vague googling it seemed this was possible, so I went ahead and removed both optical drives, replacing them with 2 hard drives, (so now the PC has 4 internal drives).

... and they work! You wouldn't believe the hassle I've had with NetworkAttachedStorage and various different USB drives, while figuring out that this machine doesn't like USB drives!)

The thing is: the drives seem to be running really slowly. Is this because CD drives won't need to receive data as fast as hard drives do? Is there any way of setting it up to send data faster to these drives?

You can consider the use of the Panda Vaccine on your computer and USB Drives:
Download Panda USB and AutoRun Vaccine - MajorGeeks

This tool provides a two way security by vaccinating both computer and/or USB drives.
It work on NTFS, FAT, FAT32 formatted drives.
However, vaccinating a USB drive cannot be undone without formatting the USB disk, using a hex editor, or a File Manager in a Linux distribution..

Next, make sure that your Antivirus can scan USB drives. Some do not have this option.

Is this a problem?
Anything I need to do to prepare for a 4Tb drive?

A:Mixing internal HDD size drives

Hello rocks,

It won't be a problem at all to have different sized hard drives. It would only matter if you were going to use them in a RAID setup.

For a 4TB drive, depending on how you wanted to use it, you may need to:If you wanted one large 4TB partition, then you could format the drive using GPT instead of MBR for this.
If you are going to have more than one partition each under 2TB on the 4TB drive, you wouldn't need to do anything different.
MBR disks supports up to 2TB per single partition. Default, and can be used on data and OS disks.

GPT disks supports up to 256TB per single partition. Should only be used on data disks, and not for a OS disk.

Hope this helps,

What's the best way to do this? if i pop out the second drive and put in a blank drive of a larger size will it mirror it and span the whole drive or will i be stuck with a 32GB partition on a 74GB drive? i can use imaging software to create a clone of one and image it to the new larger drive and it will span the whole drive but i'd rather not if the raid controller utility can it for me. it's an HP Server. ultra320 scsi hot swap drives. thanks!

A:Replace 32GB hot swap drives with larger size

I'm sure the HP RAID utility will limit the size of the biggest drive to the smallest drive in the array, thats the norm. But if you have a utility you can resize the partition once you've replaced both drives with the bigger ones.

Of course you other method of using disk imaging software will work too and it'll be quicker I think.

Hi, here's another problem that my pc came up recently.
I installed xp and Vista on the same HDD and i forgot to install my antivirus when a virus came and totaly wrecked my pc up... When the virus was installed... i couldnt do anything and my explorer couldnt open even with safe mode. I installed xp on an pre-unallocated 5GB size and booted from there to fix the problem. i deleted that virus and the PC wouldnt start even with the recovery disk. so i had to backup my music and pictures to complete delete the volume and make a new one.
Through many dificulities i managed to install Vista back and delete the xp on the partition to enlarge the size of it and have both OSs on 1 hdd. Now here starts my problem.
Vista wont allow me to make more that 7 or 8 Gb of partition size, so i make 3 partitions of 7GBs and then delete them to create a brand new 21GB partition, (and if i delete that partition and stick it with the main HDD, and ask to shrink partition it allows me 21GB, i want an answer here, why in the begining 7 and now 21?)...
I try to install XP and it loads everything fine, but then, some where in the end of loading setup files it ask me to wait 15 secs to reboot ot press enter to reboot now...
It restarts, and loads back to Vista! Why? It shouldnt normaly do that because i ve made numerous of formats in the past.
I try to set the boot priority to DVD/CD and again i get the same results.
I am very suspicious about these 0MB of unallocated HDD space.

If you right click properties of both the paste file and original file and compare both of the file size shown there, if both are the same does it mean that the paste file is properly copy over?

A:simple question regarding file size of copied and paste file

Did you copy/paste the file itself or just its contents?

If you did copy/paste the file itself it's the same as a "file copy". If there is an error it's reported on the screen! There are many checking mechanisms on disk like CRC check for example (google yourself). And drive firmware itself can check if write was succesfull.

You have to trust win7 or the program that copies.... you can't check if 1000's of files are copied succesfull manually.

Everytime i try to print my resume or anything from Word perfect or open different documents Prop Res Dll not loaded appears in a small box and makes me end application now.

A:Prop Res Dll not loaded?

The most common solution is to reinstall the driver software for your printer.

PS I assume the message refers to "PropRes.dll" and not "Prop Res Dll" as you suggest.

Is there any way to patch the file system to make it be able to support having files larger than 4GBs? Because I have a usb hard drive in which I have formated in FAT32 so I can plug it into my Playstation 3 so I can listen to music and watch movies. And there is some files I would like to put on it that are over 4GBs. I have heard of patching FAT32 to allow files over 4GBs on the file system but I haven't seen anywhere to get this patch. So I thought I would post here to see if anyone had any idea to get around this issue without reformating or changing the format of the drive.

I downloaded a file, didn't download correctly, size = 0 bytes.

Reports owner unknown. I can't change ownership, remove file properties, any of that stuff. Can't rename or delete. I'm logged in as administrator but it keeps asking for administrator permission.

Another question about file ownerships - I tried to do a backup once, during an OS re-install, many files came back garbled, with file names switched around, many picture files had a file size but would not open, even if I changed the extensions, etc.

It seems easier to just copy files to an external, then copy back, than doing the windows backup. Is this what other's have found?

I had completed a beautiful 82-slide PowerPoint presentation, but the wav file I embedded was HUGE (about 200 MB) and not to my choosing. I just had to have the music a certain length to span across 82 slides. Is there ANY WAY to reduce the size of this music wav file (so that it conforms to the 50 MB max file size for PowerPoint). I would rather embed this music file than to have a link. Any suggetions?

A:Reducing wav file size (audio file) for powerpoint?

I'm not familiar with PP but could you not convert the wav to mp3/ogg or other? Or split the 200mb wav into 4 * 50mb files?

As I say, I'm not up on PowerPoint, but workarounds..... ;-)

You can try copying the printer driver files located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3 directly to the system32 folder, or have the following Microsoft Fix-it do it for you:

I have just recently changed my PSU. I now have conflict with the hard drives and the DVD ROM and CD RW. When i plug the main wire in (the wide wire which goes to the motherboard from the drives) it seems to freeze the computer. As i do this, there is a change in noise coming from the computer it seems to go quieter. I think that when i plug the drives in it takes most of the power away from the hard drives therefore they are unable to run. I am running a 400w PSU for a P3.

Am i right in saying this, if so what can i do to over come this? I have been advise that it might be the jumpers on the CD RW and DVD ROM but i haven't changes these plus i do no what/how these work. Could this be a/the problem?

Thank you

A:Conflict between hard drives and cd drives

That would be the IDE cable and they have to be connected to PIN#1 of the drive to pin #1 of the cable there is a colored strip on one edge of the cable that connects to PIN#1 of the drive when connecting the drive the colored strip should be closest to you. Also please don't tell me your connecting cables with the PC powered up. IDE drive can also be daisy chained (two drives on each channel Master and slave)

Hey Guys,
I have a Dell XPS 600 with 2 160GB hard drives that mirror each other and would like to be able to reinstall the operating system but I'm not sure how to configure the RAID option. I would like to reinstall the O.S. either on one and keep the other as storage , or keep them mirrored and reinstall the O.S. I am using original Dell XP Media Center Edition 2005 disk. Thanks

I installed a HGST 500 gb hard drive on my Dell E6410 Latitude Laptop.
But it says:
No Boot device found! Can't go to BIOS either!
Re installed the original and it works fine!
Wish to know whether the HGST is compatible with Dell Latitude.
THank you.

A:HGST Laptop hard drivesvs Dell E6410 Hard drives.

It won't boot until you install an operating system (windows) on it. however you should be able to get to BIOS.

So the machine I am working with is a consumer line Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows XP Media Center and the latest A17 bios. It came with a 60GB sata hard drive that was almost full and wanted to upgrade to a larger drive. I grabbed a brand new Seagate 320GB hard drive.I booted up Acronis and attempted to clone to from a 60GB drive to a 320GB. Everything looked perfect. It saw all four partitions from the source drive and once done showed that for the destination as well. I shut off the computer install the new hard and proceed to boot. The computer attempted to boot but then received a stop 0x0000007b error (unmountable boot volume, for those unfamilar). Common issue when cloning disk so I proceeded to boot to an XP disk so I could repair the Windows install. Once it booted up, I noticed the drive was shown as a 58GB hard drive (the brand new 320GB drive). I restarted the machine checked the bios and it saw the drive as a 58GB hard drive. I pulled the drive and hooked it to four other machine that all stated the disk was now a 58GB hard drive. We checked disk management, booted to several hard drive testing tools and even poped it into a linux environment. The drive had been Permanently changed to a 58GB disk. To my disbelief, I started investigating. I tried another 320GB new hard drive, this time with ghost booted from win 98. Same process, everything seemed perfect. Reboot, dosnt start. I check the BIOS. This drive as well has been Permanently changed to a 58GB.Keep in m... Read more

After some more research I have figured this out. I can post what the fix was if anyone is interested. It was NOT a virus, it was Dell Media Direct.
