So I accidentally downloaded an antivirus program that is really a virus.

Q: So I accidentally downloaded an antivirus program that is really a virus.

So I accidentally downloaded an antivirus program that is really a virus.

It really sucks. Internet explorer refuses to work. Task manager has been disabled by the administrator. Any program that operates under windows explorer fails to run properly. This makes it very difficult to use the computer.
What exactly is wrong? Do I need to repair the registry? What if I did not make a backup?
This problem has been plaguing me for a long time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I accidentally downloaded a virus whilst downloading what I thought as something else. While I managed to find and delete most of the folders, two folders in particular will not delete due to something in the folder running. I cannot for the life of me figure out what they're running, and have even tried using Safe Mode with Networking to try and sort them out, but it still says they're running.
Can anyone help?

A:Accidentally Downloaded Virus, How to Destroy

So I tried to go on Google Chrome and it came up with an error screen that says that it is "Unable to connect to the proxy server". I can't access any websites or do anything like that, but my Skype still gives me updates so I know my internet is working.
This may or may not be related to me deleting load of files that may have included something necessary to run Chrome.
Can anyone help?

I was trying to download a game and got this computer security scheme instead.  It is called internet security and does not allow me to open firefox, IE or any other program.  It says that they all have a virus and that, if I sign up for their service and pay them money, they can take care of it.  I have tried going into programs on my comp and deleting them but it does not show up on there. Any help appreciated.

I have Windows XP 2005 which had the Norton Security pack with McAfee Firewall and McAfee Anitivirus. The antivirus expired. Oops on my part. I purchased and downloaded The Shield Deluxe 2008. Immediately I had windows popping up that stated - Detected: Riskware: Invader and messages of processes trying to inject into other processes. I have no clue what this means or the action to take. Is anyone familiar with this? I uninstalled the McAfee antivirus from Add/Remove. I don't know if I should uninstall The Shield or if it is actually working. Is there hope?

I turned on my computer today and instead of starting up it told me something similar to "there is a missing or corrupt file and windows could not start" and then it told me I had to put in my vista disk and try to repair the problem. I put in the disk, but couldnt get the computer to run the disk from the startup menus. I then went got frustrated and clicked on "recovery partition", where it told me I could re-download vista. I hoped at some point I would be able to repair my existing vista instead of installing a new one, but instead this new vista seemed to completely override my old vista, and then it told me all my old files were put into a "windows.old" file. Then after logging in it told me I had to re-buy vista, which i didn't do. When I logged in using the limited version of vista all of my files were gone and it seemed like all of my existing settings were erased. I was even disconnected from the internet. I'm wondering if there is some way I can repair and recover my old OS and get rid of this trial version.

A:downloaded vista twice accidentally

Redownload Vista?? thats not right. Vista is not downloadable. Only the updates are. the recovery partition/Disk either has the full installation O/S or a factory image of the O/S. It then just needs to be activated with your product key. The only way you get locked out and restricted to limited version mode and then are required to "purchase Vista" is if your copy is not genuine and pirated. If you bought your system you may want to contact Microsoft, and/or the store/system OEM (i.e., HP; Dell, etc.) for assistance.

Do you have a Vista premium DVD? and a sticker on the bottom/side of your computer with a Vista premium product key?

Put the disk in the drive, restart computer, when you see "hit any key to boot from disk" hit a key. Follow prompts to re-install Vista. when it asks you for install location, delete the current Installation partition, or format it, then reinstall Vista. It will ask for your product key at some point-enter it to complete the install.
You overwrote the operating system. You cannot restore it back, but you can recover the user data if you backed it up. All programs will have to be re-installed.

Yesterday, my naphew accidentally downloaded this file into my pc:

http://codecdownload.trustedsoftportal07.net/xcodec.207.exe

Then I accidentally clicked on it then try to delete it. It can't be deleted so I restart my pc and delete it. After that, I keep received fake SecureExpertCleaner alert. I found the way to removed it using some online instructions.

But when I wake up this morning and turn on my pc, my wallpaper changed to security alert warning. I can't change the wallpaper because the desktop and screensaver tabs disappeared from display properties. I also got Antivirus 2008 pop up and force me to download it. Once again, I found the way to settle it then recall the desktop and screensaver tabs using gpedit.

But I don't know what will come after this because I'm not sure if the source of this problem still in my pc. Anybody knows what I have to do? And how I can trace the source?

Around June 22nd, I unknowingly downloaded a toolbar... with it came a flood of popups. In my desperation I actually clicked on one of the links that claim to help you remove the spyware and proceeded to download and execute one of these "removal" programs. :sigh: *bash head against keyboard*

Anyways, I keep getting popups and sometimes I hear the sound that would usually play when my mouse clicks something, except I'm not the one doing the clicking. My general web browsing is sometimes interrupted as well, often getting the "page cannot be found" error for sites I usually visit. I've tried many scans including Symantec Antivirus, Ad-Aware SE, Microsoft AntiSpyware, CWShredder, and Spybot.

Help a naive web browser out?

Hello, I would very much appreciate help.  Whilst trying to download a PDF merger I was redirected and downloaded two different things after which things have been strange on my computer.  Namely, many programs have disappeared from my start menu and uninstall list (although they are still on the computer as I can open files with them).

I did some rather ham-fisted messing about to try and sort it so I hope I haven't cocked it up more.  Here are the links to what I downloaded:

Hello

I recently sent my laptop to HP for a fan repair and before I sent it off I accidentally deleted my Downloads folder and then cleared out my recycling bin. Well, I got my laptop back today and went to download a few files. After doing so, I realized that I can't find those downloaded files.

I have no idea where those files went. They were .rar and ZIP files and I can't seem to locate them. Does anybody know how I can find those downloaded files (where they might have ended up with the Downloads folder gone) and how I can restore my Downloads folder?

Thanks

Hello,
I'm new to the forum but have been monitoring this post closely as I've been having the same problem w/ the aprps file replicating itself in the registry. Anyway, I hope you don't mind me jumping in the discussion, I REALLY appreciate the help!

So I followed Cookiegal's latest instructions (allowing the FixAprps.reg file to enter into the registry).

I also ran the online Panda Active Scan & below is the saved log after scanning My Computer:

I don't use these programs but decided maybe I should do a scan and then delete it. I start the dl and when I get a chance to read the Avast terms of service I do. I paged down and once I seen this stopped and deleted it .

How about that. The antivirus used to stop intrusion becomes the intruder. It collects websites I have visited? For what? Data mining for profit? Is this why they are free? Plus they share it!

Hi All, I am new here but I was wondeing if anyone has seen the GuardBytes virus? It hijacked my laptop and wouldn't let me open any browser, run any antivirus software, or even boot in safe mode while asking me to register.. I Goolgled it but I got no hits. I was finally able to run the Super antispyware program which found some adware and eventually let me reboot in safe mode and run malwarebytes and a couple other programs to clean it out. So I am now looking for a good realtime antivirus program to keep this from happening again. Thanks

A:New Virus...looking for a good realtime antivirus program

You ask a common question for which you will receive varying opinions and recommendations. There is no universal "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone and there is no single best anti-virus. Every vendor's virus lab and program scanning engine is different. Each has has its own strengths and weaknesses and they often use a mix of technologies to detect and remove malware. In many cases choosing an anti-virus is a matter of personal preference and what works best on a particular system. You may need to experiment and find the one most suitable for your needs. Please read:Choosing an Anti-Virus ProgramHowever, an anti-virus program alone does not provide comprehensive protection and cannot prevent, detect and remove all threats at any given time. Anti-virus software is inherently reactive...meaning it usually finds malware after a computer has been infected. The security community is in a constant state of change as new infections appear and it takes time for them to be reported, samples collected, analyzed, and tested by anti-virus researchers before they can add a new threat to database definitions. Further, if you're dealing with zero-day malware it's unlikely the anti-virus is going to detect anything.Antivirus Isn't Dead, It Just Can't Keep UpHow useful is antivirus software?Symantec Says “Antivirus Software Is Dead”Is anti-virus software obsolete?Anti-virus software is just not enough anymoreWhy Antivirus Is Not EnoughAntivirus is a good start. ... Hi, I've had this virus on my computer for about a month now and I can't seem to get rid of it. Avast and AVG didn't catch all of it. Some of the files it caught were named winupdate and Skynet. When I try to run my computer in safe mode, I get a blue screen. I wasn't able to access the task manager up until today (was getting the task manager is disabled by your admin message). I'm about ready to give up on this computer so any help is very much appreciated.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.

The first noticeable change to my system from this problem was my desktop is hidden, in its place a blank screen.

Another change, continuous pop-ups warning of scans performed claiming 'Infections found!!!', 'Firewall Alert!!!', 'We have intercepted harmful programs!'.....and advising Security Tools software purchase to remedy.

If I try to start-up in safe-mode my system crashes.

If I try to run any program except Internet Explorer I get the message 'taskmgr.exe is infected with worm.Lsas.blaster.keyloger. This worm is trying to send your credit card details using taskmgr.exe to connect to remote host'.

My operating system is Windows XP.

Any help you can provide is very much appreciated - Dave

Hi, 2 weeks ago I went to log into my desktop, my desktop had changed to an old version of Windows and there was a small pop up saying that my desktop was moved (regret not screencapping it). I'm not sure if I restarted or shut down the computer, did one of those and instead, logged in the guest account. Worked fine so I updated my AVG, scanned and in red, found 2 threats (Adware Generic5.AZDR) . Immediately I removed it, restarted the computer, logged in guest account again, went on Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to update, it would not update so I went on my Antivirus program to see if it would have the same problem with updating, that too failed. I tried going on the internet and I would only get a blank page. I went on my desktop to check if it was gonna have the same problem I had when I first signed on , thankfully I got my desktop back, however the two programs and access to the internet still isn't working. It's only on the computer that can't get access to the internet, I can use the internet on my phone and tablet. I'm hardly on the computer. The last time when everything was working fine, I was tranferring pics and videos from my phone to my portable external harddrive. And every time I go on my computer I always update and scan it before doing anything. Thanks for the help.

Sorry in advance for the super long post...

I was having some problems with my laptop on Thursday evening - I was looking at some website when the system shut down unexpectedly. It was as if someone pulled the plug out, even though the indicator light still showed the computer was plugged in. I tried to restart the computer without success and had to then put in the battery (I usually leave the battery out if I am plugged in).

The computer seemed fine for a couple of hours (watched streaming basketball on TNT without problems), but after that - the pop-ups from Vista Anti-Virus 2010 started popping up. Knowing that it was a fake antivirus program, I tried to remove it with steps I found online but it didn't work. I ended up just deleting the problem file (idn.exe, I think it was). I had Microsoft Security Essentials installed but it would not run. (I subsequently uninstalled MSE). I also could not run exe files (including Chrome and Firefox), or Windows Update, until I applied a registry fix.

I downloaded AVG and ClamWin Free Antivirus. Running ClamWin, it found 4 files infected with: Trojan.Poison-618, Trojan.Downloader.Java-8, and Trojan.Downloader.Java-18 (2 were infected with this one), and removed the viruses. Then I ran AVG, and it found a corrupted executable file (was the ClamWin Portable file) and removed that.

I re-ran both ClamWin and then AVG and it seems that my computer is cleared of viruses. But I'd like to make sure it's all gone, and... Read more

ok about 2 weeks ago i ran a program on my computer. before i ran it, my virus scanner found no problems with it. but when i ran the program it acted very suspiciously. my firewall caught it trying to access the internet..then it said some other remote program was trying to connect to my computer. i blocked that request.

after that i virus scanned my computer and also did a windows defender scan. both found nothing. but when i submitted the file online to virustotal (scans a file with a bunch of virus scanners) it got a few virus hits.

i have not noticed any problems with my computer or any suspicious activity. however, i do have one question!!

***
when i ran the file the first time, THE FILE DISAPPEARED BY ITSELF AFTER I RAN IT. where did it go? did it delete itself?
***

i redownloaded the file again (but didn't run it) so that i could submit it to virustotal for testing. i also wanted to get the exact file name. i searched my entire computer (hidden + system folders) for that file name and it doesn't show up.

so again, when i ran it the first time and it disappeared, where did it go? is it possible it deleted itself?

thanks

A friend was cleaning her PC when she accidentally deleted DirectSound as well. Because of this, no sound files work anymore on her speakers. How does one go about remedying this?

I'm thinking of uninstalling the entire directx9c bundle and reinstalling hoping that directsound would be installed again, but I'm having a heck of a time trying to uninstall DirectX on her Windows XP machine. I've already downloaded the latest DirectX file off of the microsoft downloads page:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en

but the problem is that when I double click it, it doesn't seem to reinstall or uninstall the latest DirectX over the broken one (the one that's missing the directsound files) on her computer. I'm not even really sure if I'm doing the right thing. Maybe a file recovery program would do better?

What can I do? Any answers would be a big help. Many thanks to all. The more detailed the better.

I have been having this problem for a while. I received a notice to update my AVG. I don't usually click on the popups. So stupid, but I did. Had to "restart" and when I did it would get as far as the blue screen and crash. Had to restart in safe mode and do a system restore. That worked. PC runs fine. However, I no longer have any antivirus software on my pc. Had to uninstall it to get the pc running again and now every time I try to download a new version of free software, it downloads, runs the scan, then says to restart the pc and I end up in the same cycle. Have to reboot in safe mode, uninstall software, and system restore.

I am extremely computer illiterate. I have no idea what to do. Could someone PLEASE tell me how to fix this.

Thank you!

I called HP but they say they can't help and then called MS and they want to charge me for talking with them. Anyone, know how I can reinstall the program (legally)? My feeling is that it should be still somewhere in my computer - I just don't know how to access it.

I bought Easy Hi Qrecorder program a few years ago. It worked fine. I had to re-download to a new computer as the other had crashed.

I use XP home edition. The Easy Hi Q recorder is reputable, from Roemer Software. I redownloaded it to the next computer which had been recently cleaned out of my son's user account and all his programs and files.

The Easy Hi Q downloads fine and installs. But when I click on the execute file to start it, I get "DWGTrueView 2010 wanting to install instead, which was part of an Autocad program my son had, for mapping. I can't seem to get rid of this mix up. Then of course it can't find the "source" file from that autocad program since it has been deleted for months. I also tried a clean disk and defragmented after deleting all my sons files.
I just want my Easy Hi Q recorder to work properly and open up.

I just tried an XP repair using the XP disk. Still no change. And it took all afternoon to do this.

Hi all,

Please can someone help.

A work colleague of mine has downloaded the following:

Ewido Security Suite
SpywareBlaster 3.5.1
SpyBot V1.4
AdAware SE 1.06
MS AntiSpy

He says the computer starts up and then the Desktop icons and task bar disappear. The only thing that seems to stay is Messenger.

He hasn't been using any Antivirus software (as he switched it off, because it didn't seem to be doing anything) so I sudgested the above downloads as they have been great for me.

Has anyone got any ideas to what could be causing this and how he can go about fixing it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

My mother-in-law has a Dell Inspiron Mini and in October, she had a pop-up indicate the computer was infected and she needed to download "Windows Antivirus 2007" or something of similar naming. Of course, it is a scam, she got scammed, and I'm trying to undo all the mess it has made. Long story short, she finally gave me the computer to work on yesterday. I found a few problems with MalwareBytes and Microsoft Fixit, but not everything was found / eliminated. She also cannot access the internet either wirelessly or with the cable. WinsockXPfix did nothing. Finally, I tried to install ZoneAlarm, but cannot because the following warning pops up - The ordinal 1110 could not be located in the dynamic link library WSOCK232.dll.Below and attached are my logs. Hello,
I have Windows 7.

I noticed that all of a sudden my option to create a new file folder disappeared.  After some searching, it appeared the problem was with the registry.  When I went to change it, the Registry is not found.

I continued my search and realized I had a virus. No online scans work, the internet browser just closes.

I have download onto a USB and copied onto the infected computer- Norton Power Eraser, Super Spyware, Malwarebytes.  They open and close immediately.

I came to this forum to get instructions on combo fix.

I tried to pull up the command line with the winkey +R and I get the message I do not have access.

Can someone please help me?

Thanks

Hi there,
I know I got an infection and have tried various things to fix it without success. I have downloaded various applications such as FRST, Listparts, TDSSKiller, etc and got so far before resorting to doing a system restore in safe mode to try and restore to a time in the past when it worked okay.
I noticed yesterday my antivirus icon wasn't in my taskbar. When I tried to turn it on, windows explorer just hung and stopped working and my anti-virus woudn't load. I tried updating to new version but that will only go so far and say that it can't be completed because of an error. Also now Google Chrome is not working and when I use IE to download TSG Sysinfo or Malwarebytes it says it has a virus and won't alow it. Where do I begin to sort this?

Before posting I tried to follow instructions and downloaded DDS to the desktop but when I tried to run it, my computer opened a box asking me what program to use to open/run it.... I could not get it to run.

I have Malewarebytes and Bitdefender but when I try to run those the same problem exists.

It seems any .exe program won't work.

I tried to run in safe mode but that triggered only a blue error screen telling me that windows was shut down because it detected a problem and said to run antivirus.

In the control panel I tried to access add/remove software but it won't allow access.

I have Windows XP.

Don't know where to begin and appreciate your assistance.

I have the following files: an nfo file, 21 files named *.r00, *.r01 etc, an sfv file and a rar file which I have extracted...there are now a bin file and a cue file in an extracted files folder. What on earth do I do next? Please can someone help me with step by step instructions for a complete dummy !! Thanks.

THIS INSTALLATION PACKAGE COULD NOT BE OPENED-VERIFY THAT THE PACKAGE EXISTS AND THAT YOU CAN ACCESS IT, OR CONTACT THE APPLICATION VENDOR TO VERIFY THAT THIS IS A VALID WINDOWS INSTALLER PACKAGE

I have downloaded both program on a different computer then saved it to cd but even this did not work it came up with the same message

With Vista it's a good idea to right click on the installer and select "Run as administrator".

I've installed the latest version of iTunes on several computers without any problems.
Google Earth, OTOH, fought me tooth and nail before I got it installed - not a real pleasant experience. It took a lot of googling to get it to work correctly!

Not in the programs lists or on 'remove programs' either. I cant find any way of searching the PC like I did in XP or Vista 'search for all files and folders'. I have two programs in this folder , one of which is my antivirus(norton) and the other is Download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab. Are these programs already installed and can be deleted from the folder?

A:Downloaded program files?

The Norton one will be your update ActiveX,
The Flash is macromedia ActiveX control.

Both can be deleted,

However when you next update Norton it will be reinstalled, and by deleting the shockwave control will mean you will not be able to view some websites properly

Both are legitimate controls and can be safely left on your system

I have a Downloaded Program File entry, that has "unknown status", no creation date, and it says "none" under Last Accessed.

It does claim to be 4kb's in size.

This program file has no name, but instead, is a grouping of numbers and letters, all enclosed in parenthese..{}.

Highlighting it, and right clicking it only brings up the properties of the entry.

It cannot be deleted either from the keyboard, or from the menu...File>delete..Edit>cut.

The properties of this entry show it to be an Active X control, (with no creation date, no access date and no status. It does not appear to be damaged...it does not say that there are any damaged files associated with it).

I dont feel comfortable giving you the codebase http address, because Im not sure if it turns into a link that anyone can access. But I will tell you that it includes the words; fpdownload, macromedia, polarbear, ultrashim.cab

Using my search bar to go to that location brings me to a folder, with an apparent program that has yet to be installed.

There are 3 icons in this cab folder...a .dll icon, a configuration/notepad icon with the name "erma", and the remaining icon is an INSTALL icon.

Clicking on any of these icons brings up a command to "extract", or copy.

I do vaguely remember going to macromedia.com, (adobe.com) a couple of weeks ago, and downloading and installing the adobe flash player and the shockwave player. I seem to remember that when I first began us... Read more

may i ask you why my legit windows 8.1 pro 64bit full updated doesn't warn me anymore when i run a program downloaded form the net ?

for example if i download a program like process hacker under w7 i have a window like this
under w8.1 i haven't it
and i have never changed any settings

thanks

A:why no warning when i run a program downloaded ?

Windows 8 uses the SmartScreen filter to perform an application reputation check, and it now does system wide (not just when downloading programs with Internet Explorer like it did before).

In Windows 7 when launching these downloaded applications, you get the following notification:

In Windows 8, SmartScreen will only notify you when you run an application that has not yet established a reputation and therefore is a higher risk:

The user experience for applications with an established reputation is simple and clean: you just click and run, removing the prompt you would have seen in Windows 7.

Tools->Internet Options->General Tab, Browsing History, Settings->View Objects
a window pops up titled C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files. I came across this while trying to resolve another problem....which will be in another post and has nothing to do with this post.

The status of one of the files is "Damaged" and I have no idea if it should be deleted and reinstalled or deleted and not reinstalled, or just left alone. It also states the install date was on 4/29/05 (which would be before I purchased this HP Pavilion laptop--I purchased it after September 2005). The last access date for the program states today, 12/7/07.
Here is the program file description:
{49232000-16E4-426C-A231-62846947304B}
Under Properties is the following info:
ActiveX Control
80KB
Status: Damaged
Code Base: http://ipgweb.cce.hp.com/rdqnbk/downloads/sysinfo.cab

Would this damaged program be affecting the performance of my laptop? Since it's been installed since I've owned it, I wouldn't know if the performance is slower than it should be or not, or why the laptop is accessing a damaged file (and what happens when it does access this damaged file???)

Any info would be greatly appreciated....

I use a program (downloaded from the internet) which has become a problem.
It has been OK, but when I updated it to the newer version, it made my startup and shutdown, real slow.
I have uninstalled the program and wiped all traces of it.
My PC then ran as fast as new.
Am I allowed, in this Forum, to say the name of the program?

A:Downloaded program is problematic

I'd say so? Would help us to identify any common problems with said program. Maybe when you installed the new version, it added itself to the programs that start on boot. Could be something there.

I downloaded Norton Internet Security from the Net. Tried to install it but ran into a problem so I want to do an XP Home System Restore to a date earlier than the download. Doing so will lose all the recent downloaded Internet files so I need to find the NIS download file and burn it to CD before doing the restore. The desktop icon properties show the path but Windows Explorer only shows four temporary Internet folders, I think it creates new ones for each session, and I cannot find earlier ones. I've tried "show hidden files" but without success and have run a search in Explorer as well.

Any suggestions on how I can find older downloaded Internet files?

A:Where does IE6 put the downloaded program files?

Where the download is saved depends on your browser settings and whether you selected a folder at the time.
If you can remember the name of the downloaded file (or part of it) you can do a search for that file. If you cannot remember go back to the download site and follow the links to download and at some stage the filename will be visible.

Hello, my brother's computer was infected, and I do not know what the problem is as I have not used the computer. However, an "antivirus" called Antivirus System Pro downloaded itself, and there is no way to uninstall it, exit, or whatever. The program is probably the culprit. Well, anyways, please help. Last time I came here I was told to go through a process where I have to run a program and post a log? Please guide me through the steps to disinfect the computer. Thank you.

My computers are both running Win 7 64-bit. I am thoroughly confused when it comes to placing programs that I download into their proper folders: That is, program files (x86) vs program files. I have read stuff on this, but still confused. for the most part, even when a dl'd program suggests being installed into PF, I, for whatever reason, place it into PF (x86). Although I have read that placing the program into the wrong folder may cause the program not to work properly, so far I have not had this problem...nor any other problems that I am aware of. Could someone please set me straight on this issue?

A:Program Files or Program Files (x86)-Where to place downloaded program

I let the installer put it where it is supposed to.

If I trust the software I trust they know best where it should be installed/placed.

If I can't trust the software maker why am I downloading/installing their program?

Hi,My laptop was suddenly attacked by a virus when Firefox was unable to block a pop-up ad. Some are listed more than once installed, same day and version; some status unknown; some total size '0'. Surely some can be deleted - if not all - but?? Surprised the control panels add-remove does not show these programs to be installed??Esp Java runtime enviroment? Where do these programs originate from?? I know the Java program I am running is 1.5.0. updated to 6 but it does not show in this file. Even found some Symantec Script Runner Class and RuFSI Utilit Class files installed created 6/06 but I deleted all AV system a long time ago??

The "codebase" has an entry that I cannot put in here because it give access to my computer, and this program, (I think.)

Hello,
While searching for programs/files to remove that I no longer use I opened my downloaded Programs file and found "Adult Links". (Yes my husband visits those sites) Anyhow, when I try to remove it, a box comes up with the following: "These program files are currently being used by one or more programs. Please close some programs and try again. You may have to restart Windows" I closed all programs except "Explorer and systray" and restarted, but it just won't go away. I've been trying for a couple of weeks now. Also if someone knows how to remove it, could there possibly be a way to block it from coming back?

I'd really appreciate any and all suggestions.
Thank you
Yvonne

Unzip somewhere to keep and run hijackthis.exe - press Scan - the Scan button changes to a Save Log button
Save, and then copy and paste the entire log here.

I have "Damaged" downloaded program files, all of them at this status. What the heck could cause this? And what are these files in the first place? I have copied them prior to this damaged thing, on floppy disks. Do not know what the heck to do with the copies, but have them.
1-What are these "downloaded program files" and what do they mean to me, my system?
2-What could have caused them all to show as "damaged" in the status of each file? How do I figure out what caused this so it does not repeat itself? (had only 1 prob that day, with install of Microsoft updates?). Really think I should find out if I did something naughty that system did not approve of, so I can apologize to it and fix it up so it is happy with me again.
3-How do I use the copies of these files, if I need to, and do the "out with the old, in with the new" dance...how do I install the new files back into the system and get the damaged ones out?
Thanx for you help, again...have a great day!!

A:Damaged Downloaded Program Files?? What's this all about??

Downloaded program files are ActiveX controls and Java programs that are downloaded automatically from the Internet when viewing certain pages. They are temporarily stored in the Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk.

These can include perfectly legitimate applications, like Macromedia Flash player, Quicktime player, the Google toolbar installer, and the like, but also spyware.

The best way to view them is as follows:

Go to Internet Options > Temp Internet Files > Settings > Show Objects.

If any of them are damaged, right click them, and choose Remove from the context menu.

You'll just be prompted to download them again whenever Windows or an application needs them.

Cheers,

Hi..I'm looking for some advice here..I cannot remove a program that was downloaded from bearshare. I've tried restarting in safe mode, going into deleting the program, but it keeps asking me to insert the disk I originally downloaded from--and I don't have it.

A:Can't Remove Program Downloaded From Bearshare

Short Answer: Download, install, and use the trial version of Uninstall Plus! You can download it from HERE. This program can often succeed at uninstalling programs that otherwise are stubborn to remove.Long Answer: Using peer to peer websites is one of the top ways computers get infected. You have to ask yourself "Why would someone give me something of value (such as music) for free?" The answer is that bundled with the free something is a malicious something that you don't want on your computer. My guess is that you are experiencing other buggy behavior from this computer as well. If so, chances are good that you are infected. If you believe you are infected, then consider posting a High Jack This! log in the HJT forum here at Bleeping Computer. To find out more, read the Preparation Guide found HERE. It is very important that you follow ALL of the instructions found within before actually posting the log.

All of the Downloaded Program Files on my WinXP were listed as "damaged". So... I went off road and just simply deleted the file...the Downloaded Programs File, not each seperate file, as I had some type of error when I tried to do so, I believe something about the file was being used somewhere else, to close everything and try again, but would not delete no matter what I closed down.

Now, go figure, there is no longer a Downloaded Program File on the system.

My question is...does this return when there are new files that are downloaded for use? Or???? This is sounding more and more like an X-Files case...should have not cancelled the show!

Thanx for your time and help!! Hopefully I will get it some day!!

Hi.
I have an HP Pavilion running Vista home premium.

When I am cleaning my computer out at the end of the day, I open up internet options and "veiw objects", which brings up my DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES folder.

In there are 3 or 4 active x files.

But 1 in particular has a status of DAMAGED.

Vista is different in that I cannot just delete this damaged file, like I could in XP, or in earlier windows versions.

All I can do is right click it, which brings up a "properties" link.

This damaged file is an active x file, and the "code base" reads like this:

The link takes me to a gp[1] file that looks like it originates from my adobe illustrator installation, and inside this file are several Adobe GetPlus application files, a .dll and a .ocx active x file.

Hi All,

I'm using Blink Personal antivirus. Blink uses a program called "SyncItGUI" to download updates for Blink. I'm using the MS Resource Monitor and its showing that SyncItGUI is downloading a lot of data. I live in India so I have limited bandwidth. Is there a tool that will log how much total SyncItGUI is downloading? It runs in the background. The Resource Monitor just shows the current rate of download (i.e. the download speed). I want to know how much it downloads in total. Any tools can do this? I did an internet search and didn't find anything. I also looked at the Windows logs and didn't find anything. Thanks,

Hi
I have a desk top PC with Windows XP SP3 and use IE 8. When I clicked on Tools> Internet Options.>General Tab>Browsing History>Settings and then View Objects I found there were 17 entries with one dating back to 2005. Some entries are associated with programs that have long since been removed. Of the 17 files listed 10 were shown as "Installed" in the Status column while 6 were shown as"Damaged" and 1 as "Unknown".
Some of the "Damaged " files have either "none" in terms of size or "none" shown as a creation date.
Can anyone tell me whether or not it is safe to delete these entries?
I would appreciate any advice
