Problem on updating Windows Live Mail / LOST EMAIL ADDRESSES OF CONTACTS

Q: Problem on updating Windows Live Mail / LOST EMAIL ADDRESSES OF CONTACTS

Dear All,

I have been using windows live mail since quite a few time now.
While I logged in to my msn messenger today it asked me to update as there was a new version available.
I did that and alongwith messenger it updated and installed other programs as well.
It updated my WLM and gave it a new look. I NOW HAVE VERSION 2009 (BUILD 14.0.8064.0206)
I was happy to see the inbuilt calender which was not there earlier.
But what it did with my contacts was shoking.
I have 1197 contacts in my Windows Live Mail Contacts.
It is showing all 1197 names but only showing emails of about a 100 contacts. Rest all email addresses are lost, only their names are there.
THIS IS REALLY SHOCKING. I HAVE LOST ALL MY EMAIL ADDRESSES IN CONTACTS. THIS IS A BIG LOSS. PLEASE HELP ME.

Please tell me how this problem can be resolved and why did this happen?

I am eagerly awating your reply.

PLEASE HELP ME.

REGARDS,

TARUN MAKKAR

A: Problem on updating Windows Live Mail / LOST EMAIL ADDRESSES OF CONTACTS

Hi All,

This same problem happened to me, plus I have some additional info.

Just like the earlier poster, I am a longtime user of Windows Live Mail. I was prompted to update and did so, and liked a number of improvements.

However, the email addresses of my contacts had been removed, along with all info other than just the contact names. The number of contact names is unchanged, and as far as I can tell, all the same names are there. The few email addresses that do remain (about 20 out of 500) were all used recently, AFTER the first launch of the previous WLM version on this computer, which is new since February. My guess is that these email addresses were automatically added per the preference setting "add email addresses to contacts after third reply."

Here is the added info: when I tried to import my contacts again from a CSV file, it didn't work. A window came up saying that the program was updating my contacts, and it took a REMARKABLY long time, but after it finished, I was left with the same scenario. My CSV file is still good, but WLM will not work with it.

I'm out of ideas. Please help.

Thanks to all in advance.

-Robert K.

Hi,
I have been using Windows Live Mail on this computer for 5 months or more with no issues. Today, out of nowhere, all contacts, safe sender and blocked senders were gone. I never had to actually sign into my Live Mail account, but today, it prompted me to get a hotmail account so I could log into Live Mail.
I have no need for a hot mail or yahoo account as I already have email through Hughes, net, but after I signed up for a hot mail account, it automatically signs into my LIVE MAIL account also. I had to re-input 150 contacts. What has changed?
I never needed to sign in before and I always had my contacts????

Thanks
Joe

WLM can be very confusing when it comes to contacts. There are two ways to use WLM (1)"signed-in" and (2)"not signed-in". Each has its own contact list. You may have been signing in automatically all the time using the same LiveID that you used when you originally downloaded WLM. (You couldn't download WLM in the first place without a LiveID.) If you again sign in with the LiveID with which you were previously signing in automatically you will again see that "signed-in" contact list.

If OTOH you really were optioned to "never sign in" (Options/Connections Tab) then you were always using the "Not signed-in" contact list. You will see that list again if you do not sign in. I'm not sure which is the case.

WLM can actually be used with m... Read more

I have been using windows live mail for years, and today I noticed my contacts have all disappeared. I try to restore to a former date, but it wouldn't let me do that, either. I have Windows 7, had taken the computer in because my windows mail got corrupted and it kept downloading Outlook.com for my mail. I did not want that mail program. The computer tech fixed it for me, but at that point my contacts disappeared. AFter working on it longer, I don't know what he did, but the contacts showed up finally.

That was three days ago, now my contacts are gone again. Any suggestions how to get them back? When I log into my email program, it is titled Windows Live Mail 2012.

Thank you.

A:Windows Live Mail - lost contacts

Hello Tielfeathers,

With the way they are disappearing like that, you might check to see if you are still signed in to Windows Live Mail with your Microsoft account (Windows Live account) like below.

Usually your contacts are tied to the account you sign in to WLM with.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I have been using Windows Live Mail for a while now on my Windows 7 machine. It is the newest version available. I have setup my account to be a pop account to access my ISP's e-mail. There were lots of contacts listed in there.

For some reason today I noticed a button that says "Sign In". I clicked on it and it asked me to sign into messenger. I figured what's the harm. I have never used messenger better and maybe I should start. So I signed in.

All of a sudden all my contacts went blank in WLM. No big deal. I closed the program and re-opened it and still no contacts. It seems like it got the conacts from Messenger which I have never used before (so there were none) and replaced all the current contacts.

Is there any way to get my old contacts back. It would save me a lot of time instead of having to type them in. I don't even know why it deleted them. I would have been happy if it synced them up with Windows Messenger so I could have a backup online but it just deleted them.

Hi! isilver18, welcome to 7F

Go to the Start Orb\All Programs\Windows Live.

Right Click on Windows Live then click on Properties

Click on Previous Versions, pick a date/time before you tried messenger, click on restore, then Apply, and OK.

You can also backup your contacts. I'm trying to find a good explanation for you .
When I do I'll post it.

I just tried to send an email and Windows Live Mail did an automatic update. I couldn't send an email without it. When the computer re-booted all of my contacts are gone. Help, I'm not a computer expert but how can I retrieve them? All of my calendar works but no contacts. Wish it was the opposite....I'd tellyou the version but I don't know how to find it. I don't "sign in" when I get my email. But now even if I needed to that part is "frozen", can't type anything there. Hope someone can help. Thanks

A:windows live mail update lost all of my contacts

Programs and Features>Windows Live Essentials; highlight; use the change/uninstall link at the top; in the next window choose "repair". All the installed components of the Essentials package should be repaired, including Mail. This should repair WLM so that it is working properly so you should be able to "sign-in", however if your contact list was created without "signing in" it won't help to sign in. Assuming your "not-signed-in" contact list is still on your computer it may come back when not signed in but if it doesn't you could try to do an "Import" from the contacts pane, but that only works if you have previously made a backup "Export" of your contacts.

I am sorry if this question has been posted elsewhere in the Forum, but I have not been able to find anything that relates. Thanks for your help.

Welcome again to Seven Forums Wembley You'd want to see if you can convert the file into a .csv file that you can then import into WLM. See if these instructions allow you to create a .csv file

Then use these instructions to import the .csv file

To import offline contacts into Windows Live Mail

Open Windows Live Mail by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type Mail, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Live Mail.

In the lower-left corner, select Contacts.
Click Import on the ribbon.
Select the file format that matches your exported contacts (.csv or .vcf).
Click Browse and then select the folder containing your exported contacts.
Click Next and select the check boxes next to the fields that you want to import.
Click Finish.

I think I agreed to an update of live mail a couple of nights ago. The live mail client looks COMPLETELY different, probably good (who knows), but first thing was that when I typed in a name I use frequently to send messages to (which usually just brings up the address) nothing happened, so I pressed the "to" field, which usually brings up my list of contacts where I can search and found that there are no contacts; then I tried opening contacts (from bottom left pick options) and it simply will not open.

My contacts are still there - I can see them from my hotmail account on the web. How do I get them back into my new, improved version of the mail client!??

Thanks

I have bought a new computer with Windows 7 preinstalled. Before setting it up I backed up all my outstanding emails (204 .dbx files) and email addresses (one .wab file size 176kb) from my old computer on to a memory stick. I now want to import them into Windows Live Mail. I have gone through the recommended procedure for the emails, but only some of them have come across. I have been totally unable to import the addresses. The only procedures I have found seem to relate to a different version of Live Mail because they tell me to click on things that don't appear on my screen! Can anyone help?

It occurs to me that maybe not all the messages are being imported because I haven't imported the relevant contact details. Could this be the case?

By the way I can't go back to the old computer as it has completely died, which is why I replaced it.

Hi,
I?m using Windows Live Mail Version 9 ( Build 14.0.8064.0206) and Win XP 5.1.2600 SP3.

Windows Live Mail is my default mail and news handler.

I?ve suddenly lost all my Contacts ? for when I?m about to send a new email and click on the icon ?To? - to select an email address to send the mail to, - a pop-up appears which states: -
None of your contacts has an e-mail address defined. !!!

Whatever email address I?m using, the result is the same.

There should be one active directory with all my contacts, but I cannot find it.

This may have happened when I added a hotmail account to my email accounts.
(I?ve attempted to rectify the problem by downloading and running a program contacts.msi ? but it made no difference).
Any ideas please?

A:Lost contacts in Live Mail

Find and locate the default path of the 'Windows live contacts' as mentioned below.

C:\Documents and Settings\<windows id>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts

One is named "Windows Live Contacts" and has several empty sub folders such
as {db09dc1a-3d71-448e-8494-146d685c3ea4}

The other one is named "Windows Live Contacts(24)" has the same sub
folders (same names) and a sub sub folder named "DBStore"

each "DBStore" has 3 files :

contacts.edb
contacts.pat
edb.chk

Delete or rename "Windows Live Contacts"

and rename "Windows Live Contacts(24)" as "Windows Live Contacts"

and Open you Windows Live Mail

You will get the contacts back

evening alll...new to site and hope that someone can help me...
i run my own business and was using outlook express to send mails to clients.
i have a database with 20,000 email addresses and when i wanted to contact a certain area i would block email them.
basically i would copy from my excel database and paste into the BCC section on outlook and then press send....simple....
problem now is that my netbook broke and so i have a new one and set up windows live mail....well brother did....all was well sending mails and recveiving them but tonight i tried to copy multiple email adresses from the same database and put them into the BCC section on windows live mail and it will not send.

BAsically when I paste then adresses it is stacking the names above each other with no semicolon between them. If I just put a coupe of the adresses in and then put a semi colon between the adresses the mail will send..

question is how do i send mails to multiple users (50 adresses at a time)

i really look forward to hearing from anyone

many thanks

We did find it in Hotmail (which we don't use) and tried to delete them there but it did not work. The other laptop we have has WLM in it also but "contacts" folder is accessable in the WLM menu. How do we get the same access on the first? Are there two different versions of WLM? Both versions were down loaded from Internet.

After the desktop computer I was using until a couple of weeks ago crashed (permanently), I bought a new computer (AMD quad chip, Windows 7 64 bit). I put the main hard drive from the old computer into a case, and was able to connect it by USB to my new computer to save my data (I copied the libraries onto the new computer), but have not been able to find out how to rescue my Live Mail account information, contacts, message rules and saved or unread emails. Any article I find talks about first exporting the information, but since the hard drive that version of Live Mail is on is no longer bootable, I have no way to export the data. If I can find where to locate it, I would like to be able to copy the files into the new computer, replacing whatever files would be set up when I first start Live Mail. The old computer was Windows 7 32 bit. Any help with this would be appreciated.

A:Problems moving Live Mail accounts, contacts and email

Were you signing in to WLM on the old computer? If so, your contacts are at the website contacts.live.com and will be imported into the new program when you sign in. They should also be here for 2011:C:\Users\<windows username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts; (in 2009/2010 the sub-folder under Microsoft is "Windows Live Contacts").

The message store folder is along a similar path ending in "Windows Live Mail".

You could try dragging and dropping the contents of the old folders into the new. I've done this only with contacts to see if it would work for the not-signed-in case. It worked for me in 2009/2010 but in the process I had to answer a lot of prompts with "try again" or "yes" since WLM wants to be sure you really want to do this. BTW, the folders may look empty but that's only beause they are hidden by default; they can be dragged even if not visible by selecting everything in the right pane of the Explorer window showing the folder's contents.

The messages may work the same way. If not you can make them visible by changing the folder/view option to not "hide protected operating system files". Create new folders in Windows Explorer to keep your groups of *.eml files, then use WLM's import messages feature to navigate to each folder separately and bring it's contents in to WLM.

As for the accounts and message rules, I usually just set that up from scratch myself even though there is an export/imp... Read more

I have upgraded my Computer from Vista and Windows live mail 2011 to Windows 7 and Windows live mail 2012.

Live Mail 2011 used as Contacts just the Vista Contacts.
Live Mail 2012 is having it's own Contacts which are not compatible with Windows 7 Contacts.

I found a way to import Windows 7 Contacts as Live Mail 2012 Contacts but no way to export it as .contact file again (export can be done as CSV or VCF file only).

Since I still want to synchronize my Windows 7 contacts with an old Vista Computer the Import is not a solution for me.

Is there a way to persuade Live Mail to use the Windows Contacts again
and where are these new Live Mail Contacts saved?

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts seems not to be used.

Your best plan is to access your mail account directly, the use .csv format to export / import them into WLM 2012.
If you don't use WLM signed-in they wont be remembered.

Don I might be way off track here mate but was the Outlook account the same email address as you have set up in WLM?

Just a thought you might try adding an account to WLM using the old address and password. I did this with my old account from my service provider then went to a Hotmail account.
Now admittedly it was still within WLM but worth a try.

What I will do is try and add my work account (Outlook) to my WLM and see if it works.

PS It added the account but I have to get the POP and STMP settings right first.

A:Export E-mail contacts from Windows Live Mail to Hotmail

Windows Live Mail is Hotmail, with a new look. So I am confused as to what you are trying to do.
It sounds like you created a whole new name for Windows Live Mail... you didn't need to do that.

If you just open Windows Live Mail and logon as the HotMail name you will see all of the contacts.

This thread was previously closed due to lack of answers, however I found a solution.

When importing a csv file into Hotmail, the email address field is expected as "E-mail Address" however in the csv file created by Windows Live Mail the email address field is "Email Address".

Note the missing hyphen. This means that the email address is not transferred over to Hotmail.

The solution is to edit the csv file using Notepad - simply add the hyphen to the top line of the csv file, save the file and import it into Hotmail.

If you have the same problem with other fields, a useful test to see what field names Hotmail expects is to export a contact from Hotmail and then inspect the csv file which is created using Notepad.

Still battling with Windows Live Mail. I have imported my address book contacts about a dozen times now from XP and want them on my local PC when I am offline.

I do not want to be forced by MSN to sign into Live Mail ID to see information that belongs to me, that I want accessible on my hard drive at all times.

Is there any way that I can prevent Windows stealing my contacts? Or can I import them somehow to 'my documents'? Or can anyone suggest an address book/data programme that works alongside Windows Live Mail?

I really don't understand why MSN are so determined to help themselves to users data and then force them to access their own information through the pointless LIveID operating system, that is simply another completely unneccessary layer of control/signing in/data harvesting etc.

Any advice greatfully received - Thanks

I have managed to install Windows Live Mail (part of Microsoft Windows Essentials 2012) on my new Windows 10 laptop and got it working but only very simply. On my previous laptop I have several email addresses - based on my domain name - and currently use different ones for different sets of people. All of the names are from the one account ie all replies come to my inbox, and all sent items are in the sent file no matter which email address I use. Can I set Windows Live Mail to do this too? or do I have to set up a totally new account for every variation of [email protected]? Sorry if I haven't explained this very well - any advice would be most appreciated.

A:Windows Live Mail - using with different addresses

I have several email addresses...............and currently use
different ones for different sets of people.

In that case you'll need to setup a new account in WLM for each email address.
After doing that you'll notice that each email account will have its own Inbox and Sent Items folder.

.......ie all replies come to my inbox, and all sent items are in the
sent file no matter which email address I use.

You can configure WLM to do that by adding "All inbox" and "All sent items" to the "Quick Views" section of the folder list. It's basically a custom view that displays the sum of all Inbox and Sent Items folders.

In Win XP, the contacts selection called up the contact name and e-mail in separate columns, so that you could sort the list by name or by e-mail address.
Is there any way of doing that in Win 7?
Occasionally I get an e-mail with just the e-mail address, but not a contact name, and I'd like to be able to find out who it is.
All suggestions appreciated.

A:How can I sort e-mail contacts in Windows Live Mail?

Under the Home tab in Contacts Click on View there is a Sort By with an arrow. Click there and you have a choice of how to sort, last or first name.
Also if you click on Mail- the same thing- Under the Home Tab-View- there is also a way to sort the emails

You could try a repair of WLM. Go to Programs and Features, highlight "Windows Live Essentials", click on change/uninstall at the top, and choose repair in the next window. All installed parts of WLE will be repaired, including Mail.

I use WLM as my default e-mail program. I just updated to WLM 12 from 9, and noticed that my address book had 3 of the same address for 90% of the people. I went thru the book and deleted all the dups. . . and when I ask for an address for a new e-mail, no dups. I also deleted about 100 no-longer-valid addresses.

However, I have 2 drives on this computer: an SSD that is the boot drive, and E:, which contains the working files. BOTH DRIVES HAVE A CONTACTS FOLDER under USERS/(my name)/DOCUMENTS/CONTACTS. BOTH of those folders still contain addresses that I DELETED!!!

Questions: Why do I have a /Contacts folder on BOTH drives. And where is WLM getting the contacts if it does NOT show the contacts I deleted, but the Contacts folders do?

I noticed that my WLM categories were somehow corrupted and missing some names. When I click the category on the left, in the list of names on the right they are all there. However when clicking edit I notice some addresses are missing. They are also missing when attempting to send mail. When I add the missing addresses and click save they are not actually saved. I tried deleting the category and making a new one and that seemed to work for a while but the next time I logged onto WLM the same names were missing again.

Your advice would be apreciated.

A:Windows Live Mail Categories Not Saving All Addresses

The problem seems to have been solved. I suspect the contacts store in Windows live mail was somehow corrupted. When I composed a message on the web interface the group contacts worked correctly. Also when I used Windows Live mail on my laptop signing into the same user the goup contacts also worked well. I figured I needed to rebuild the contacts folder on my desktop computer from the good source on the Microsoft server.

I closed WLM. I found the windows live store folder which is located at:

C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts

I renamed the "Contacts" folder to "old_Contacts" and restated WLM which rebuilt the contacts folder from the Microsoft server. That seems to have solved the problem.

Hi guys. I hope I can make this clear to understand and not too confusing.

I've recently run Killdisk, reinstalled Windows 7 Pro x64 on my laptop, got it to where I wanted, including all MS updates and email, and have done an Acronis backup.

Before the format, I manually saved the email folder with all it's account and email content. Then reinstalled WLM on the fresh W7 install, went to 'Users/Me/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows Live Mail', deleted what was in there, and then pasted my saved email folder contents. Loaded WLM and hey presto, everything there, with all my emails. No problem with that.
The next thing is putting my mail contacts back (also manually saved before the format) but I can't get them to show up. They normally reside as DBStore files in Windows Live Contacts folder, also in the same area as the email. 'Users/Me/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows Live Contacts'. So I put that folder there but nothing appears in my contacts when I load up WLM.

I removed the whole folder, and decided to do a test and add a new contact in WLM. I found out the new contact has appeared in a different place, 'Users/Me/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows Live/Contacts/Default' and then inside there, a folder saying 15.5, and inside that, a DBStore file. As another test, by removing the DBStore from 15.5, my contact disappeared in WLM but reappeared when I restored the DBStore file to the 15.5 folder.

By adding a new contact, I had expected windows to create a new Windows Live Con... Read more

A:Windows Live Mail Contacts

Which version are you using because in WLM 2012 there is a problem with group contacts sending, they do not go and there are other problems with 2012 also
your email address does not have to be in a contacts list for it not to send, but again if you are sending a group contact and your email address is there it actually does not matter if it is there or not it will not send the group
this is only happening in windows live mail 2012
If you have windows live mail 2011 then I suggest you try to do a repair and see if that fixes it

A:Windows live email contacts?

If you have been signing in (either manually or automatically) each time you open WLM, your "signed-in" contact list should be visible both in WLM's "contacts" section and at the website: contacts.live.com. If you have not been signing in, then the contacts visible in the contacts setion of WLM is your "not-signed-in" contacts list. Both lists are stored on your computer but only one is visible in WLM depending on whether or not you are "signed in".

Hey gang!

I have an issue with Windows Live Mail, it won't let me import contacts, all options are grayed out.

OS: Windows XP, SP3 with all updates, freshly installed.

I successfully imported the email accounts, messages AND contacts after I installed Windows Live Mail. When I launched the program the next day, everything was fine except there were no contacts listed. I saw them there after the import (over 500 entries) but now they are all gone. The contact list is a .csv file exported from Windows Live Mail prior to reinstalling the OS. So I attempted to do the import all over again except I can't; all the import options are grayed out. I can create a new contact from scratch as well as create categories/groups but it won't let me import a contact list. With over 500 entries to restore I really don't want to do them by hand!

Any ideas?

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I use all of the windows live applications except for "family safety" (which is currently not installed).
All of the applications run fine except for Live Mail which freezes when I am signed in and click on contacts.
No problems sending, receiving or writing emails. No problems adding contacts to an email (even if I am signed in to Live).
It simply freezes when I am signed in and click on the contacts option of the application. Or if I am in contacts and then sign in to Windows Live.

I have done a repair of all windows Live products. I also followed another troubleshooting tutorial and changed the "contacts" folder name in order to allow Live Mail to re-synchronize contacts when I signed in again. Neither of these worked.

I would prefer not to have to re-install the application altogether if it can be avoided.

Any help is much appreciated!

I've been using WLM ver. 9 for many years, but some functions, like the "undo" arrow, ceased working. So I just installed WLM 12. Strange thing happened to the Contacts; not all, but 98% of my contacts appear 3 times. I.e., there are 2 duplicates for every contact. When I open the Contacts folder, only one address exists there for each contact.

While I COULD simply delete the 2 duplicates throughout the list, I run a small business on this computer and have ~600 addresses in Contacts. . . which is now ~1800. . . and I would have to delete 1200 of them. Sitting here for an hour or more doing that is not appealing

Another unexplainable thing: If I go to create a new e-mail and click "To:" to look up the name, the list that appears HAS NO DUPLICATES. I only see the duplicates if I click Contacts at the bottom left of the main WLM page. So why do they show there, but not when you go to select someone to put into the "To:" box?

I have just built a new PC with Windows 7 on it. My old PC had XP with MS Office 2003 OEM, but I have decided to go with Open Office on my new machine to save expense.

I have some miscellaneous contacts and some calendar reminders stored on my old machine in Outlook, and I need to transfer these to my new machine. I thought I could do this using Windows Live Mail. So I nstalled it on both machines, then transferred my Contacts from outlook to WLM on the XP machine, then exported them to a csv file. So far so good forgetting about reminders for the moment....

But when I try to import the contacts csv into Windows Live Mail on my new Windows 7 machine, I find I can only import mail messages. A lot of the menu icons are greyed out and there is no option to import contacts. Is this because I have not set up WLM as an e-mail client? I have not done this as my e-mail is web based and I dont need a client for it. I just want to store some contacts / reminders on it.

A:Store Contacts in Windows Live Mail

WLM is an email client or program that must be downloaded and installed on a PC. Hotmail is the web based email service that Microsoft provides. If you want to import contacts into Hotmail, check out the Hotmail website for options.

It looks like it should be easy.
I start off by clicking on " contacts" at the bottom left (below "calendar" and above "feeds")
Then , being sure to highlight a contact , I click on the tab underneath where it says "export" (at the top near the middle -just to the right of where it says import and to the left of where it says "directories") and am invited to choose between .csv or .vcf formats.
I choose one of these and

nothing happens...

I imagine I have failed to spot the next step... unless the program is at fault

I need to do this as I want to backup the program prior to uninstalling and replacing it since there is a small problem that recurrs each time I open it...

somewhere in the settings of skype you allowed WLM to have access, go back into the skye settings and see if you can fix it there.
If not, you might have to remove the contacts in skype, then they should remove from WLM, then just put them back but you still have to go into skype's settings and see where you have a check mark to allow Skype to put your contacts in Wlm and remove the checkmark

I have a Windows 7 machine and had been using Windows Live Mail and after an update, all of my contacts disappeared.  I've read that I can Log on to Live Mail but I have never done that so I don't have an account to log into.  All of my contacts were local.  I tried to do a restore of a previous version of the contacts.  I had several versions, all 24+MB in size so I suspect it has information in the file.  It says it restored the contacts but when I went to view them, nothing displayed.  Of course, I was a fool to trust Microsoft and never backed up my contacts so I have no file to import.

If anybody has any thoughts on what is causing this, how to recover from it, and how to prevent it in the future, I would be much obliged.

Thanks

Hi! Try highlighting something and then pressing CTRL and C to copy. And then to paste into those fields, press CTRL and V.

That usually bypasses ALL of the security settings.

Hi, all. I've read a ton of Windows Live Mail lost Contacts posts from all over and still don't know if there might be a solution to my particular situation. I am using WIndows Live Mail 2009 (Build 14.0.8117.0416). I've been using Live Mail for several years ... always locally only ... I've never signed in and don't plan to. It is still set under Connections to 'Stop signing in' just as I set it after its initial install. All of a sudden when I select Contacts folder it says I have no Contacts. When I check the Windows Live Contacts\{...}\DBStore folder, all the appropriate files are there including contacts.edb which is 6M in size. The {...} value appears just as it should in the registry. I use Casper backup which creates a file by file, folder by folder backup. My backup from just a few days ago when I know I had Contacts available because I have used my Contacts list since that backup shows exactly the same files and sizes under the backed up Windows Live Contacts folder. Replacing the current folder with the backup, of course, then makes no difference since they are identical. If the Contact database hasn't changed and the client, wlmail.exe, has a last modified date of 4/16/2010 (so it hasn't changed), I am totally baffled as to why, all of a sudden, wlmail is telling me I have no Contacts. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello first time poster here.
I have a hotmail.com email account and an outlook.com email account. I would like to access these two email accounts using Windows Live Mail. I have set up both accounts in WLM. But I noticed that I am "signed in" to WLM as either one or the other account even though I can send and receive email from both accounts.

My problem is, I only have access to the contacts of the account I am "signed in" to. So if I am "signed in" to WLM using my hotmail username & password, I can send an email from the outlook.com account but I can only see my hotmail contacts. I would like to keep the contacts separate since one is personal and one is work. So I am repeatedly forced to sign in and out of both accounts when I want to get to my two contact lists. Its very annoying... is this how it is supposed to work, or am I missing something here?

What I want to do is, if I'm sending from my outlook.com email let me see my outlook.com contacts, and if I'm sending from my hotmail.com account let me see my hotmail contacts. Is this possible to do? (without merging my contact lists).

Thanks for any help.

A:Windows Live Mail - Contacts question...

When you sign in to the accounts can you not click the box to keep you signed in . I hv a hotmail account configured to WLM and that shows all the contacts I have. If you want to keep them separate just put the contacts on one account in a sub folder of the main contacts folder and same with the other one. You can then just toggle between the two!

Hello all:

I am having problems importing a customer's address book from Outlook Express (XP) to Windows Live Mail (7). The addresses are being (mostly) split into each individual entry: some are just physical addresses, some email addresses, some phone numbers.

I searched on your forum here and did not find the answer to the problem (indeed, I didn't see anyone else having it!) so I thought I'd ask to see if you've heard of anything like this. I would appreciate greatly any response and I apologize if this is something that has already been posted.

Thanks,
Jacob

The first part says the problem is with importing the address book but the Edit part says emails are being split. Is the problem with address book or emails?

Hello all,

I've got a folder full of about 700 emails that I sent from Windows mail (Vista). Now, I want to take the "to" addresses, and export them as a csv file, or some other type of file I can import into a database. Alternatively, just creating an contact folder in Windows Mail would sort of do, but I can't work out how to create a bulk list of contacts from "to" addresses.

Anyone got any deep thoughts on the matter?

Cheers,
Richard

HELP!!
i have several email addresses for different things but I cannot find any info on how to switch between email accounts (used to be called identities) in Windows Mail. Does anyone know how? Thank you so much.

A:Windows Mail / switching between email addresses

From what I read you can't do that anymore in Windows Mail.

I think you can add all the accounts, which will send the emails from all the accounts to the inbox

So what you would do is create multiple inboxes and then set rules so that you assign a inbox to only accept emails from a certain account

I dont have Windows Mail, just info im reading from the web.

Hi, first time poster here.
I have read numerous forums and also tried a few things myself but I cannot fix this problem.

Problem: I updated my system from a HDD to a SDD , fresh install of windows 7 home 64 bit.
When I go to windows live mail my contacts folder is gone. This was just via the internet, I didnt know whether I needed to install windows live essentials/mail or not. (still dont know)

I tried locating files for windows live , but it seems I didnt have any, only windows mail. ( was looking at :user>local>microsoft>

I tried the latest install of essentials but it did not help.

Before the installed the SDD i copied all my program files onto a external hard drive from the HDD. In those there is a contacts folder with about 10 dll files. (not sure what they all are)
I have tried installing the older windows live 2011 essentials (which the HDD was running)and then copying the contacts folder across into the location of the windows live folder from the install of 2011 WLM but it still does not show up.

I am unsure how to get the contacts folder back and working, and whether my old contacts are gone or not.

Any help most appreciated.

Hi,

Please note that this is not Windows Live (Hotmail) but the offline Windows application with that name. I find Windows Live Mail as a great way to manage my email, I want to manage my contacts there too. However, all my contacts are currently loaded on my iPhone (I have the contacts manually created on the phone a long time ago).

Thanks for your suggestions.

A:How to export iPhone contacts to Windows Live Mail?

If you want to directly export the contacts use a small application intended to run on your PC called CopyTrans Contacts.

1. Run the tool on your computer and connect your iPhone. You can download the program from here: export iPhone contacts

2. Once your iPhone contacts appear, drag and drop a selection to a folder on your PC

3. Select the type of contact files you wish your iPhone contacts to get exported in. Windows Live Mail recognizes Windows Contacts, so select that format

4. Your iPhone contacts will be saved to your PC. Now go to your Windows Live Mail application and import the contacts from the folder on your PC where you saved them in

While trying to research a different problem, I created a *.live.com id in Live Mail. Now I can't figure out how to go back to my default identity. *.live.com has no contact list. Windows Live Mail asks me to login with the previous Id, but does not accept the default Logon Id. I've tried to have it reset repeatedly, but to no avail.

I do not have a problem with the *.live.com ID, but I need to get my contact list back, either move it to *.live.com or somehow copy and paste it to *.live.com or else get back to my default identify so I have my contacts again.

Thanks for your assistance.

1. Need to " un-hide " operating system files " and also " show hidden files "......

Start > search box, type folder options > Enter > View tab at top > ....
put a blue radio dot at " Show hidden files, folders and drives ", and
un-check " Hide protected operaring system files " > OK

2. Here is where you will find WLM contacts
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\{ a string of letters and numbers }\DBStore
Inside the DBStore there is the Contacts.edb. \that's where you contacts are.

One problem I have : I can't open the contacts.edb. I used Adobe Reader, Internet Explorer, Notepad, Wordpad.... none are able to open it.

3. For WLM messages
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail

I installed new Windows Live Mail 2011 and it upgraded on its own to 2012. Can you tell me where to go to setup my email accounts to save contacts in our contact folder for addresses we send email to, I know I've seen that option some where?
I just had a computer person reinstall Windows 7 on my computer. He saved all my documents and pictures. Failed to save our two email accounts. Wife is complaining about losing her old emails, is there a folder where I might find them?
Thanks

I'm on Windows 7 and my Live Mail won't allow me to add contacts or update existing contacts. A few months ago I upgraded to Windows 10, hated it, uninstalled it, lost my prior email, even after trying steps for email recovery. The problem with contacts may have, or may not have started then. I'd appreciate suggestions.

I just had my Windows 7 reinstalled and have installed Windows Live Mail. Prior to doing so I did a full backup to an external hard drive. I did not do any special export for Windows Live Mail. I have copied contacts from the Contacts file on the external hard drive file into the Contacts file on my computer. Windows Live Mail does not recognize those contacts. The only way I can make it work is by clicking on a single contact in my C Drive contacts folder to send an e-mail and then do an add to contact and presto, it now shows up in Windows Live Contacts. I am trying to avoid having to do this for each contact one at a time.

I would have thought I could simply copy all of my contacts from the backup drive into my C Drive Contacts folder and they would then be usable in Windows Live Mail. Obviously it is not that simple. Hope somebody can help me.

Thanks

A:using contacts from backup folder in Windows Live Mail

You may have to use the Import in WLM to bring the contacts from the Contacts Folder in C:\Users\YourUserName\Contacts. I've had to change Folder Options to Show hidden files, folders, etc., in order to show that Folder. WLM may be able to Import from the external drive.

Friends
I've given up fighting Windows Live Mail [the client-side version] many bugs and have moved on. But I need to get the Contacts, and then the folders/Messages. Every time I attempt a .CSV Export of the Contacts WLM crashes [hangs, spins up CPU, does not resolve itself]. Anyone know the cause or cure for this?

Failing a cure of this yet-another-bug, where is the Contacts store? Anyone know its file Extension? how to safely copy until I can figure out how to extract and use?

Apparently WLM does not like any copies of OE on a system... it monkeys with Outlook Express system files when it cranks up - I guess they share stuff under the hood?.. dunno. Attempts to get answers to these various issues on "Microsoft Answer" are time-wasted, in my experience.

A:Windows Live Mail Contacts Export Crashes - how to get them?

Contacts are stored here

C:\Users\Your user Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Contacts\Default

Try exporting while in safe mode.

That is what you get.
Cannot transfer groups. Just contacts. You will have to re-create the groups.
P.S. They call it " category " in WLM 2011, not group.

Newest version of Windows live mail is 2012, you might want to download the newer version and it will overwrite your older version, and restore your missing folder. Just to be safe I would do a complete image backup 1st, using a program like Macrium Reflect free. Here is the link from MS for the newer version.

During the install you can choose which apps you want to install.

I was running the XP version of Windows Live mail on my desktop. Recently I did a custom install of Windows 7 and the W7 version of WLM on that computer. The installation of WLM did automatically import a contacts list, however, on examination it is an obsolete version, not the current contacts list from the XP version of WLM.
Can anyone tell me how I can recover my latest WLM contacts list?

Thanks

Hi - hoping someone can help a newbie...

JUst upgrading to W7 and trying to import emails etc so installed WLM on XP and all menus and icons show up fine.

Have imported emails ok.. and now have 20 inboxes, 20 sents boxes 20 delete boxes... you know the drill... although all messages being sent from my primary email address which I absolutely don't want

On W7 there are no menus and no icons to reveal the menus. I have tried Alt a thousand times and although the hidden letters appear, I can't get them to do anything.

So I still have my problem no menus, no file, options, settings and right now I want to import my contacts the default message is login to Windows Live ID - but they aren't there - they are in a WAB file I cannot install!!

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated - I usually okay with this type of problem - but this one's got me beat. Attached images of the exact problem - one with icons and menus - the other, all missing

Thanks

A:Cannot locate contacts or menus in Windows Live Mail in W7

Welcome to the Seven Forums, Mike11.

As for Menus, everything that you may want is in the Ribbon Tabs. Contacts are on the left pane towards the bottom below the Calender. If you choose Contacts on the left panel you should be able to locate Import on the Ribbon.

On the extreme left of Ribbon Tab is the nameless WLM Tab that too provides a lot of options. You may like to click on it and have a look.

WLM has everything that was in the Outlook Express but it takes a little time to master, because all of us have been used to OE for years.

I can not import my old contacts from Microsoft Outlook, to Microsoft Windows Live Mail. I open Live Mail, then go to Contacts page, then open "FILE" , then open "IMPORT", then try to select one of the types of files, such as CSV or Outlook, but NOINE of the file types are highlited, they are all grey, and you can NOT click on any of them.

Any ideas what is wrong??

A:Can NOT import contacts from Outlook to Windows Live Mail !

Forget even trying that. The closest you could import if possible would be from Vista's version of Windows Mail not from Outlook or Outlook Express. In WLM you simply have to manually add most of your usual contacts in or use the add name to contacts list when going to send the first mail out to someone. That can save time if you have a good number on the list.

Under XP, I have always backed up my OUtlook Express address book and email messages from the C: drive location.

Now under Windows 7 and using Windows Live Email, I am trying to find the appropriate contact and message files so that I can back them up in the event of ever needing a possible OS reinstall.

Can someone give me the path to these files (including the file names and suffixes)?

A:Backup Windows Live Email Contacts and Messages

Hi Coastalguy, there is no need to backup email in WLM as it will still be available by accessing your account directly. WLM only uses a contacts list and if its the same account your signed in with, they will be available on WLM when you sign in again.
If you don't sign in to WLM messages can be saved. I use WLM 2010, so yours will be slightly different if using WLM 2011.

I've been successfully using Windows Live Mail 2011 since it first came out. Last week that changed. Now when I send an email it goes straight to my drafts box and I get the following:

Error Message:

Server: 'mail. iinet.net.au' .....that is my ISP and I haven't changed any settings.
Error ID: 0x80070057
protocol: SMTP
Port: 25
Secure (SSL): No

I have no idea what is going on and need help.

A:Email problem using Windows Live Mail in Windows 7

Hi Don, welcome to the Seven Forums.

That error message means there are messages in Outbox that can not be sent. To get rid of those, first click Work offline button in ribbon:

Now go to Outbox and delete all unsent messages. Check then your account settings; if the error message in your post was copy pasted there seems to be a typo; the mail server name has one extra space after first dot "mail. "

Shut down WLM, relaunch it and click Go online.
