Vista only boots up to "Startup Error" Diagnostic Tool after SP1

Q: Vista only boots up to "Startup Error" Diagnostic Tool after SP1

I attempted to install SP1 from a standalone package (wave1) that
I downloaded from the MS website. The install was proceeding fine
then I shortly went to bed before it completed. Well, after
waking up the "Startup Repair" diagnostic tool was on the screen.
It read "Startup Repair cannot repair this computer
automatically". The problem details are listed below:

*****************************************
Problem Event Name: StartupRepairv2
Problem Signature 01: AutoFailover
Problem Signature 02: 6.0.6000.16386.6.0.6000.16386
Problem Signature 03: 6
Problem Signature 04: 1703962
Problem Signature 05: CorruptFile
Problem Signature 06: NoBootFailure
Problem Signature 07: 0
Problem Signature 08: 0
Problem Signature 09: unknown
Problem Signature 10: 1168
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033
***********************************************

I have attempted the following tasks:
1.System Restore - Result: Cannot find a previous restore point

2.Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool - Result: No problems found,
system reboots, and automatically goes to "Startup Repair" - Gives
the same dialog of problem details listed above.

3.Command Prompt - Result: tried bootrec /fixboot & bootrec
/fixmbr, but after restart it automatically goes to "Startup
Repair" - Gives the same dialog of problem details listed above.

4.Chkdsk - Result: No bad files or errors found. After reboot it
automatically goes to "Startup Repair" - Gives the same dialog of
problem details listed above.

5.Also tried the above from a Vista Restore Disc - Result: Repair
options finds no problems. However, after reboot it automatically
goes to "Startup Repair" - Gives the same dialog of problem
details listed above.

6.Enter "Safe Mode" - it automatically goes to "Startup Repair" -
Gives the same dialog of problem details listed above.

7.Enter "Last Known Good Configuration" - it automatically goes to
"Startup Repair" - Gives the same dialog of problem details listed
above.

That being said, I am stuck. I can navigate my C: and partitioned
D: drive with no problems through Command Prompt. All my personal
files are still there and intact. However, I can not understand
why the computer keeps booting up to the "Startup Repair"
diagnostic tool everytime. Before that happens I see two black
command prompts flash very quickly then the diagnostic tool comes
up. I have not clue what that problem detail events mean. It
appears (my guess) that SP1 got stuck during the install process
and will not allow me to get into my system until it completes. I
called MS Vista support and they are suggesting I contact Compaq.
I have made no hardware changes since I got this laptop 2 months
ago. I would appreciate any help I can from you guys.

Laptop Configuration:
Compaq Presario V6000
Vista Home Premium 32bit

A: Vista only boots up to "Startup Error" Diagnostic Tool after SP1

Hi, BigFeat, and welcome to the forums.

Before I suggest something as drastic as back up your files and format and reinstall, I want to see if anyone else has a solution to this problem that is non destructive.

However, I have a feeling this will happen again - unless, of course, there was a power failure during the night...which has just gotten me thinking.

Since you can use the command prompt, re-initiate the installation via the command prompt and see if it will let you start / pick up / finish from before....

Anybody know how/where to uninstall Microsoft Diagnostic TOOL (MSDT). Got on their site last night as they offer free help on SP1 and inadvertently clicked yes when I meant to click no when asked if I wanted to download the tool; comes with ActiveX too. Now, I can't find any uninstaller for it, anywhere.

Hi MorningStar,

Have a look in
Controlpanel>admintools>Taskscheduler>local>pcDoctor(hp).

Click on PCDoctor/hp> properties (left hand side)> triggers>change to what you want

It should be under the local section, If not on the first screen that opened scroll down to the date it was last run to get the correct name

as described in the title when i boot my laptop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834117780R
i get the "disk read error -> press cntrl alt del to restart" message. I then tried to access the backup partition through f10 only to run into this error "status : 0xc00000e9 Info : an unexpected I/O error has occurred" it seems that it cant communicate with my hard drive.

I read a few other forum posts but didnt see anyone have the 0xc00000e9 error also. Bios boot priorities are in order if that matters.

Is there a fix without having to replace the entire HD and buy a new vista installation(preinstalled w/ no disc in the box).

Im very reluctant to take it to a service center as i can very likely fix it myself (with the help of the friendly people here of course), only problem is im having a little trouble..finding.. my HD in this damn notebook.. heh, ill figure that part out. new to notebook repair.

Thanks in advance. Danny

edit: found the HD, doesnt look like it even uses a cable, just plugs right into what i assume is the mb. dont know if that helps just supplying what i can.

Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit, boots up and runs fine as long as "Windows Search" is NOT checked in "Services".

When I run msconfig in the Services Tab, that is the Windows Search checkbox that I'm talking about.

If the box is checked, computer will start up, allow me to click on my user icon and load everything as if it's ready to go. The cursor moves with the mouse but does not respond to mouse clicks, also the computer does not response to the keyboard. If I click the start button, I get the spinning round wait icon (or whatever that is called). It also runs fine in Safe Mode.
I tried sfc.exe /scannow I have all the latest windows updates. I have run several different anti-virus, anti-malware programs. I ran chkdsk. Do I need Windows Search checked in Services? What does Window Search do? Is that where you can search from the Start Button area?

A:boots up then freezes when "Windows Search" is checked in "Services"

Which flag did you use with chkdsk - /F ?? My first guess is that Search is trying to index and snagging on something - either a file system problem or bad disk sectors. The /F flag deals with the filesystem. If you haven't tried /R, for sectors, do so, but only after backing up important data, and perhaps taking a system image if the system's current state is valuable to you. I prefer to run chkdsk from a WinPE/RE boot disk so I can study its output at leisure.

Hello all,

I am experiencing an issue with an old HP 530 laptop. I have owned it for many years but I have not used it frequently for the past 2 years or so until now. It was working fine (albeit slow) until I booted it the other day after a Windows Update. Every time I boot, it goes to a black screen where I assume it is installing updates, but it gets stuck and flickers and shows the error code: "!! 0xc0000034 !!".

F11, which is I understand the recovery on-boot shortcut for HP systems, does not work. It simply goes to the Windows Error screen. Safe Mode, Last Known Config and Start Windows Normally do not work. It goes onto the aforementioned error screen.

I have tried a Windows Vista recovery disc. The disc loads, but I have had no luck with the options available on it.

Startup Repair:
- It scans, and then says to reboot to see if it successful. It is not.

System Restore:
- There is only one restore point, which is very recent (most likely the Windows Update that caused this). I tried it and received the error message "System Restore did not complete successfully".

Command Prompt:
- I have tried "bootrec.exe /fixmbr" and "bootrec.exe /fixboot". Both state "The operation has completed successfully." but there is no difference.
- I am about to try "chkdsk", although I am not confident this will work.

I just upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Win7 professional x64 hoping to fix the above mentioned problem. After a complete re-install Im getting the same errors.

Im not sure of the proper terminology here, but during startup the computer does a scan of all hardware and "Volume 0" has a "failed" message.

The odd thing is that sometimes after a few restarts and pointless boot menu visits the computer starts up fine.

I tried windows repair feature by booting from the disk, but when I get to the window where i select the operating system to repair, its empty. Drive C, where the operating system is, is not showing.

I have a feeling that the hard drive itself has gone bad and is very unstable. Please let me know if I'm missing something or we just need to get a new HD.

Thank you

What type of hdd do you have. For example if you have a Seagate drive, there is software you can run to do a diagonostic on the hdd before the operating system boots.
This would be a good idea, especially if you were having same issues when Vista Home Premium was installed first.

Do you have more than one hdd installed. If yes, make sure in BIOS settings, the proper drive is selected for First Boot. And better yet make sure its the only drive attached when booting.

When computer boots up, it automatically goes to the Startup Repair tool, which searches for a problem but then concludes that it "cannot be automatically repaired".

I've tried booting in Safe Mode, same problem. I've also attempted to recover the "Last Known Good Configuration" but that hasn't given me any success either.

I had the same problem with my Acer Aspire 6920G laptop. I finally used a Apricorn Live Wire and connected the hard drive directly to my desk top. I was able to see some files but none of the Picture files I had downloaded to the computer. I made an image of the drive using the supplied EZ Gig II software that came with the Apricorn hardware. I will return the computer to where it was purchased and hang on to the image in hopes that the future may advance something that will allow me to recover the data. I know that this doesn't help much......I posted a note like yours I think on Sunday but have not received any replies.

Greetings,

I realize that I posted this thread previously, but I see that I had erroneously created it in the inappropriate forum (Windows Vista). However, the user "Macboatmaster" was kind and patient enough to provide me with assistance there, though I am still waiting on his following procedures.

In the meantime, as this is the Windows XP forum (my operating system is Windows XP), I wanted to formally post my dilemma here as well, as I thought that I may acquire more feedback. Here is the problem that I am facing, along with what Macboatmaster already suggested:

-I recently encountered some trouble on my pc (a BENQ) with respect to starting it up. During a recent system restore, a power failure occurred, and ever since I attempted to boot the computer, I receive the following error just before the desktop appears:

"Explorer.EXE - Unable To Locate Component: This application has failed to start because WININET.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem."

This error prevents me from accessing anything on my desktop (i.e. task bar, icons, etc.) - only the desktop background appears, and all that I have access to is the Task Manager (Control+Alt+Delete). Control+Escape does not allow me to have access to the Start menu. I receive the same error just before I get into the cmd prompt, but it appears that I am still able to use it.

What has been already attempted (Macboatmaster's suggestion):

Yeah, I got infected with it too. Except I tried doing most of it myself and I think I kinda screwed up doing so. I ran AVG and Malwarebytes and erased it, but now things are getting even more frustrating as I can't open programs without running it as an administrator. I can't even run the task manager without some dumb error message popping up saying that the "application cannot be found." Almost all of the simple programs like iTunes or Firefox tell me that the extension .exe doesn't know what program to use to run it. Halp?

Hi all my computer has been playing up today when ever I open internet explorer 6 and go to another page its fine for about 20 seconds then an error message pops up regarding spyware/antivirus software then I click no and it redirects the page to a free antivirus page.
I have tried scanning for viruses and spyware with Mcaffe, viruses and spyware with AVG (picked up a few and removed) and also tried spybot which picked up heaps but the problem is still there.
I have been through the control panel and there is no software that shouldnt be there and have tried my best looking through the program files .

One of our users has Windows 7 Installed. When she emails out attachments, she right clicks it and chooses to "Sent To" and then selects "Mail Recipient". It opens and creates a new email fine. Upon pressing SEND it gives a "FIXMAPI 1.0 MAPI Repair Tool has stopped working" It does successfully email.

Hello All,

I wonder if there is someone who might be able to solve a recent problem I got with the Snipping Tool application (ST).

ST was working perfect until very recently and then it suddenly started giving my problems; everytime I tried to save an image I kept getting this error (See picture).

I've tried several things to fix this issue such as running DLL-Fixer (initially a thought it was a .dll issue), running Malwarebytes, HitmanPro, and a full scan with Norton IS-2014 and Eset Online Scanner. I found nothing, or at least nothing serious.

Afterwards, I performed a Clean Boot and checked applications in both *services* and *startup* to see if there was a conflict with the ST. I noticed something odd with one of the applications (on startup) called ADM Hydra Vision Desktop Manager (AHV): I realized that was able to get proper functionality of the ST after unchecking AHV and rebooting again... So, I thought that I had isolated the problem. Consequently, I decided to let AHV uncheck from the start up list (using System Configuration) and rebooted again, but after a while the problem resumed once more.

Any ideas?

Could anyone explain the differences to me.
Also, does anyone know a good piece of virus toolkit that can actually remove them as well as prevent them?

T.I.A.

A:Difference between a "virus removal tool" and a "patch"?

A virus removal tool removes the virus from your computer meaning that the file is already on your system and running, so it stops it from running and removes the file. A patch however is used to prevent bad things from being installed, usually released when big worms hit, like SoBig, MSBlast, CodeRED...etc...So patches are to prevent and removal tools are to remove files already installed.

Most mysterious: I've tried everything I know, but the personal startup sound (.wav) I want (to complement my personalized LockScreen) shows as the selected WindowsLogon sound on the select screen, and plays when [>TEST] button pressed. The "Play Windows Startup sound" is 'checked'. However, the personalized sound does notplay at 'startup ' (no sound at all), but onlyplaysupon a 'restart'. I did try winaero's "Startup Sound Changer", with no success. Sure could use some assistance.
PC Information:
HP STREAM 13-c010nr
Windows 10 HOME (x64)
Version: 151
OS Build: 10586.36
I have looked through the Registry and noted that "Window Logon" is associated with:
(default)/ RG_SZ/ Windows Logon
DispFileName/ RG_SZ/ @MMRes.dll,-5853"
ExcludeFromCPL/ REG_DWORD/ 0x00000000 (0)
Not sure if this needs to modified/adjusted or if a new Key needs to be created. (I'm assuming that '-5853' is the default startup sound.)
Again, I'm baffled and would appreciate some guidance.
Thanks,
Stephen

Yesterday I turned on my laptop which came preloaded with Vista and it popped up the black screen that says, "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause." Then it gives me the option to launch the startup repair or boot windows normally.

If I try to boot Windows normally, it just gives a microsecond view of a blue screen then it puts me right back where I started.

If I try the startup repair, it tries running for a minute, then it says, "Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically," and gives me the option to send or not send the info to Microsoft.

This system is used for my business and I'm pretty dependent on it.
Any suggestions for how to proceed on this would be VERY appreciated!!

p.s. regarding the computer's message about new hardware or software, I have not installed anything new on it for some time. Don't know if that's helpful info or not.

I tried copying a fresh version of the file to \Windows\System32. No dice. I tried renaming it all uppercase and then all lowercase. Nothing. I put a copy in the root directory. No effect. I tried everything I could think of, but nothing worked.

Then--doh!--I stopped thrashing and did what I should have done initially: I dug into the Microsoft Knowledge Base and learned about XP's built-in Rebuild command. It can often easily fix "Missing HAL" and similar problems in just a minute or two. If you know about this command and how to use it, you can potentially save yourself hours and hours of manually reinstalling or rebuilding a failed operating system.

Windows XP comes with a wonderful tool called System File Checker (SFC)
Itscans and verifies the versions of all protected system files after you restart your computer...
To Do This:

In the small box that Opens, type the three letters: cmd then click the OK button.
In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and white text), type the following command:
SFC /scannow

Today I got my new laptop and decided to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7 on it. After several hours of partitioning and researching, I ran into many issues. Eventually I decided to boot Ubuntu from a USB drive, open up Gparted, and delete any and all Linux partitions while expanding the size of the Windows partition back to normal.

Unfortunately, in the process, I must have made an error, because now upon startup I get the "bootmgr is missing" error. I don't have a recovery CD nor does my laptop have a CD drive, so that's out of the question, but I know for a fact my Hard Drive has a recovery partition on it. I want to restore my computer back to normal, keeping my old files if necessary. However, since I just got the computer today, I clearly don't have anything on there I can't afford to lose, so if I must do a factory reset I will.

When I searched this, Google came up with zero results. I have no idea what "EBIPO" is, and neither does the internet, apparently.

Two days ago, I was in the process of verifying Windows 7 (because I got the "windows 7 is not genuine" message) and then when I restarted as I was asked, that message came up and I haven't been able to get into the computer since.

I have tried booting directly from a Windows 7 disk, and the computer skips past it and returns to the message. I've tried putting a recovery .iso on a flashdrive and booting from that, and still, nothing. It will not boot from anything whatsoever, no matter what I put first, disable, enable, etc in the setup thing.

I have no idea what to do at this point, because I can't get into the computer for the life of me, and I can't lose the files I have on there. Not again. This computer was a gift from my grandparents, and not even three months later, I've somehow effed it up.

Hello,

I've been having this nasty problem since yesterday. I have no knowledge of viruses whatsoever so I am at a complete loss as to what to do.

I'm using a 7-year-old laptop and Windows XP. At a guess, the problem comes from my friend's USB. This is what happened: I inserted the USB and noticed a RECYCLER and some Shorcut to (1) etc. viruses. I thought this wasn't serious so I ignored it. An hour or two after that my Internet connection crashed (I don't know if it has anything to do with the virus). By checking randomly, I found out that gpedit.msc and my Antivir setup file also refused to run.

I then shut down my computer and have been unable to boot ever since. Every time I try to start up, I am faced with a dozen of "out of memory" pop-ups, all of them with "xxx" in their title bar. I tried closing them all, but new ones kept springing up. I opened Task Manager and found at least 20 processes named FONTS.EXE. I guess this was what caused the "out of memory" error, so I tried to end those processes, but they kept re-appearing over and over again.

The taskbar and the desktop icons won't show up. The screen is blank - there's just my wallpaper background, my cursor and the nasty error pop-ups. I can't run any virus check or do anything else.

I've also tried rebooting in Safe Mode, but it took me to the blue screen of death.

Another problem, my laptop's CD driver is out of order (as I said... Read more

Yet from the same partition i'm able to boot into a "dual boot type install" of LUbuntu which im using just fine right now
On my other hard drive with a windows 10 install. check disk reports NO errors

Trying to boot from the windows 7 install dual boot begins booting but almost instantly kicks to an old style loading bar then goes to startup repair
and it fails with the problem being "bad hard drive"

but somehow it LUbuntu has no problem booting when i select to boot from it instead of windows 7
all of my data MUST be intact because otherwise i wouldn't be able to boot at all. and i can see all the files on my drive just fine

When I tried to boot in safe mode. it stopped after a few system files were loaded then went to startup repair. I dont remember the file it stopped at.

I have no idea how to solve this??
Is there some way to do a full repair of windows 7? not just the silly startup repair?

Every page I've Googled about this error tells me my hard drive is shot and needs to be replaced. I'm in total denial so, can this really be? Have I lost all my data?

Does the hard drive need to be gutted and replaced?

Thanks.

Hello there and welcome to the forums Doomdaddy!

If you want to be absolutely sure whether your drive is gutted/or still recoverable, try and pull it out of the laptop and place it into an external USB caddy/enclosure, and plug it into a working system to see whether the system can detect it or not...

You can also try to reseat the the drive in the laptop by taking it out and putting it back in again after a cold shutdown..

Hope that helps!

I'm currently using TeamViewer 10, though this happened with TeamViewer 9 too.
This error message pops up appears when I log into Windows 7, but not does appear again after hitting OK.
This is still problematic because TeamViewer does not start until the error is clicked, so I cannot remotely restart my computer.

I've attached a jpg with the error, which reads:

"TeamViwer: TeamViewer.exe - Bad Image

A recent hardware or software change might have caused the issue after you install Windows Updates" error, the keyboard doesn't turn on during boot so I can't access the bios despite having changed the boot order to specifically boot usb before anything else, now all I can do when I see the message is turn the pc off again, unplug all the sata cables, which then allows the keyboard to start working straight away some how, then once I've accessed the bios I just turn it off again, plug the sata cables back in and the error just disappears, only reappearing when I next boot

A:During startup I always receive "Windows failed to start" error

Perhaps a device address conflict?
I had once a problem with loading, swapped the Sata port and it runs since than ok.

Hi,

After booting up my laptop (Dell studio 7 running Windows 7 Premium 64) today, two strange "Command Prompt Error" message appeared. They had something like "Hidden Startup" as the window title (I might not have remembered this completely accurately as I didn't think to take a screenshot or save them at the time).
I haven't seen these messages before, and since rebooting they haven't returned.
Is there a way of viewing them again so I can work out what they are and what might have caused them to appear? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I am in quite a dilemma with my current computer. I have recently purchased a new computer chassis which I transferred all my components to with no new additions.

On startup I was being sent to the Marvell Adapter 98xx which I had never encountered when my components were in my original case. The adapter was saying:

Virtual Drives: None Detected!

Physical Drives: Patriot Inferno SSD (which already has windows installed on it)
Western Digital HDD

It would then proceed to another black screen saying please select proper boot device etc etc.

I have since tried all the different SATA configurations, IDE, AHCI, and RAID. I tried all of these with the Marvell Adapter both on and off. I have tried all of the modes with both drives in each combination possible (SSD in 6Gb port/HDD in 3Gb port , SSD in 3Gb port/HDD in 6Gb port, SSD & HDD in 3Gb port, and the original SSD & HDD in 6Gb port)

I have reset the CMOS in a hope that It may resolve the issue, I have also pressed F8 (boot menu) and selected the SSD directly for startup considering it has windows installed on it.

Originally when the issue started I was able to enter the Marvell adapter and I created a virtual drive with both of my drives. This still resulted in me being sent to the "Please select proper boot device screen" and so I deleted that virtual drive.

In conclusion I have run out of ideas and I am stumped as to what I should do (as I have found similar sce... Read more

A:Startup error "Please select proper boot device"

Hey again to anyone viewing the thread. I have found out what the issue / resolution was.

In the end I just booted with the windows 7 disk in the dvd drive which enabled me to get past the error and into system repair. The issue in the end was a corrupt MBR section in the 1TB HDD. The system repair removed the corruption and removed the partition.

After that I was able to start up my computer like usual but the HDD had lost its info. Luckily with the program "EASEUS partition recovery" I was able to retrieve the lost data that was originally on my drive as system repair only removed the data instead of deleting it.

Thanks to anyone that showed interest in my thread.

I was recently running a regular scan on my computer with my anti malware program, when the program was done scanning it restarted my computer to finish the removal of malware. Upon restart of my computer I received an error that said "No boot device found. Please press any key to reboot your computer" I pressed a key and it brought me to another black screen that said "scanning media", I have now seen this screen enough that after a few seconds and only for a few milliseconds text beside it says [failed] then it disappears, seconds after that it brings me back to the first screen.
I have been unable to return to my computers login screen and have contacted dell and they have told me I must buy a plan for them to help me, which was quiet pricey, I plan to bring my computer in to Memory Express but they also charge a pricey amount so any fix would be much appreciated.

Yesterday, our computer around 6PM got a fake antivirus virus that popped up and installed automatically. I went and removed it off my computer. That one was called "Malware Doctor". Later, about 2 hours later, I got another one that popped up on my task bar called "Antivirus 2010". That one didnt install and I removed it. Today i started up our computer, and I got Antivirus 2010 again. I exited out of it, and removed it. Then I could not access the internet via Google Chrome, so i tried AOL. AOL worked, but it was freezing as always. I decided to restart my modem and my computer.

When I turned it on, It would go past the XP screen and continuously reboot. I then hit F8 many times, and got the menu(not sure what its called) and make it so it would not auto-reboot on system failure. Booting into safe mode doesnt work, or the other start options. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to access the internet/techguy.

I then got this error on a blue screen:

The Windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status o

I do not have a XP installation disc, or any other windows recovery discs. How may I go about fixing this?

Thanks! You guys are awesome, you helped me tremendously when I had my last virus/PC problem.

As this question was never answered I'll post it verbatim with my own comments below,
See original post here;
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/756093-flash-drive-s-active-light.html

In all operating systems up to Vista, the flash drive's "active" light turns off when I go through the disconnect procedure; but, in Vista, it doesn't. I have traditionally used this as part of my explanation to others (and a convenience to myself) about when to not to remove the flash drive from its USB port.

This is a problem common to all Vista systems I've seen.

Why does the light not turn off in Vista?

And, is there an easy way to correct this?

Additional information: I have eliminated this problem being hardware-related. I have loaded Vista onto one of my systems here that previously had Windows 2000, then XP on it and it was only with the loading of Vista that the problem developed on this system. Just to be absolutely sure, I did a restore of a previous image of Windows 2000 and the problem went away again. I put Vista back on and the problem came back. So, this is strictly a Vista problem.Click to expand...

I have had the same problem with every Vista system I have used and every flash drive (note this means SSD NAND flash not HDD's or card adapters). A:Flash drive's "active" light doesn't turn off in Vista when "safely removed"

have done a litte research and testing in my lab on several machines and have confirmd the problem. What it seems to indicate to me is that, in Vista, the light simply indicates power, not data transfer. Whenever I am transferring data, the light blinks.

While I have never actually tested it, I do not belive that the "safely remove" feature actually kills all power to the USB port in XP. If that is the case, then there is really no danger as long as vista has acknowledged the disconnect and knows not to try to write data to the drive.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

How do I remove this program from my computer? How do I change the execFilename property? What do I change it to?

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi and welcome to TSF.

It looks like you have also uninstalled Java as well which may well be needed in order to uninstall the other program written in Java. You can try using Revo Uninstaller (free version is at the bottom of the page) to remove the program.

When it has been successfully removed, I'd make sure that you have the latest Java installed on your machine.

On startup I get a popup window labeled "RUN DLL" with the following message:

"Error loading C:\PROGRAM~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\M3PLUGIN.DLL

I've done AV and multiple spyware scans, plus the usual ATF Cleaner runs at regular intervals, and this still comes up on bootup. It seems to indicate that whatever weird file it is can't find something else it needs to run, but given that the kids use this system and frequent sites like MySpace and Facebook, it's a little creepy.

Hello,

Customer Toshiba Laptop, Win7 Home Pre, lots of add ons, toolbars, PCFix Speed, Reg Optimizer Pro, etc. Removed with REVO, Cleaned up startup with CCleaner, and MSCONFIG.

Ran Malwarebytes and MWAV (Microworld stand alone anti-virus tool.) Reset all 3 browsers (IE11, Chrome, Firefox30) Reboot. All of the browsers open up to w w w-search .net > Tuvaro. Verified proxy in internet settings was clear and set to "automatically detect" and also without auto detect. (Proxy was set to 55150?) Reset each browser homepage but still goes to w w w-search .net.

Ran Combo-Fix 2x and the internet browser problem is fixed.

Now whenever the system boots up it shows two separate error messages box with RunDLL in the upper left corner and states
"There was a problem starting C:\Progra~!\common~1\System\Sysmenu.dll" The Specified module could not be found."

C:\Program Files\Common Files\System - no Sysmenu.dll here
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\System - no Sysmenu.dll here

I have re-run Malwarebytes and it did not find anything.

Looking in MSCONFIG and the startup section in CCleaner I do not see any item pointing to either of the locations - C:\Program Files\Common Files\System - in either program.

Is there any other load point that could be calling for this?

I do not have the infected computer at my access right now (brother in law's computer) so I have not been able to see exactly what is going on, so this is simply a general question post for now:

At startup, his Windows XP system shows an error that reads something similar to "lsass.exe operation failed - operation was unsuccessful". I tried to get him to boot into safe mode but somehow the same error appeared. From what I gather from a little research this seems to be some sort of registry problem. Hello, I just purchased some new RAM (Kingston PC3200 1GB DDR 400MHz)

I added the RAM into an available slot but it will not start now.
I have a Gigabyte nForce3 mobo with an AMD Athlon 64 Processor.
Windows XP Home SP2

Before I had this setup and it worked with 1 Card in the 1st slot and the second in the 3rd slot (4 Total Slots)

512mb Kingston PC3200 DDR 200 (has the little black box's on one side only)
512mb Kingston PC3200 DDR 200

Then I tried to add my 1GB Kingston PC3200 DDR 400 module into one of the free slots, resulting in BIOS giving the DRAM Error. I tried many configurations but it seems that I cannot have 2 RAM cards right next to each other.

-1GB Kingston PC3200 DDR 400
-512mb Kingston PC3200 DDR 200

Is what im using right now, and its fine but thats only 1.5 GB of RAM and I would be able to fully use the RAM I purchased.
It can't be an incompatibility problem since I Can in fact use either of my 512mb Cards with the new 1GB card, they just won't work with all 3 at once.

How can I get my full 2GB to work?
4 RAM slots = 4 RAM cards usable right?
If any other information is required please let me know.

Two major errors were not fixed that sound serious.
"Service registration is missing or corrupt"
and, "Windows update error 0x80070057 (2016-07-30-7-06-01P)"

The rest were fixed, all the rest being "Problem installing recent update." I don't take that to mean that the intended updates were actually installed.

Hi;
Had a sudden inability to go much further than a third or forth-level download on ANY given webpage and then PC would seize-up, requiring "cont+alt+del" in order to get freed-up. Thought perhaps I picked-up a bug of some sort during a recent google search, and went immediately to Panda and Trendmicro to perform both virus as well as malware scans. While the Panda scan was loading-up, I received the following error message....

... " DoPatch....dll reports error....Error "C:\WINNT\patch.utp"....unreadable or not a patch file..."

Was able to complete both scans. Nothing found other than tracking cookies.

I then did a file serch for the above and located it. It was installed TODAY apparently, and not by me, within minutes of the problem starting.

I'm guessing someone/thing slipped this patch into my WINNT file or modified it while I was doing the google search, so I have included a HJT scan below.

Hope this all makes sense and ties-out to something. Any help would be genuinely appreciated-

I was trying to respond to an old post about this error - it was an unsolved post - but was over the time limit. I have been encountering "Error 1402 - Vista Setup can not open registry key..... xxxyyyyzz"

I was attempting to install Microsoft Office 2007 when I received this error. I was able to fix it using Microsoft's "Fix It" wizard. I have posted a link here..

How do I restore security settings to the default settings? This restores your registry to default security settings, and in my case, it clearly fixed my error 1402.

Hope this helps.
Thanks
Andy

What is the difference between the "windows vista standard" and "windows vista basic" color schemes (under windows color and appearance > open classic appearance options)? They both look exactly the same to me.

A:Vista color schemes: "vista standard" vs "vista basic"

Technically they are not the same if you look at your close, minimize and maximize and the color scheme they are different.

I am a novice that has run into trouble with Location tools.I have tried Googling the issue, but I am not exactly sure what I have done.

I am rebuilding my laptop which has a medium size SSD and a 1Tb hard drive running Windows 7 Professional 64. I have much of my software installed to the SSD ( C: ), some installed to a small partition ( D: ) on the 1TB disk, and my files to a second partition (F: ) on the 1TB disk.

My Dropbox is in F, and I successfully used the “Location” tool to move my “Downloads” folder to F.
1.I went to move my Favorites folder with the location tool and fat-brained/fat fingered something and I found the individual elements (items and subfolders) of my Favorites folder in F without being part of the folder Favorites.
2.There was an option to return to the “default” which I assumed was like “Undo”.As usual a bad assumption. My individual Favorites stayed on the F Drive and copy of the F Drive appeared in my user folder.
3.I now have a “Local Disk ( F: )” in my User Folder on C:, but luckily it is not “taking up space” on C:. I cannot delete it or drag it. I also have my Favorites (items and subfolders) on F: with a Favorites Folder.
4.One more unusual note…. In one view of my User folder I see “Local Disk F:”, but when I go through Windows: User: I do not see “Local Disk f:”See attached screenshot to see that circumstance and for additional illustrat... Read more

What "Location" tool? Where is it, how do you get to it? The only thing I see if Location in Control Panel and I don't think that is what you are talking about.

I am not a very experienced computer user, so please keep it simple if possible

Hello! My parents are having computer problems, and I'm their first port of call. However, I'm at university a few hundred miles away, so I only have their words to go by...

That disclaimer aside, here's the problem as they sent it to me:

"The complete message received as you try to switch on is below. Whether you close the message box or click OK the result is the same, namely a few seconds attempting again to open Windows before the message comes back.

lsass.exe - System Error
Security Accounts Manager initialization failed because of the following error: The revision level is unknown. Error Status: 0xc0000058. Please click OK to shutdown this system and reboot into Safe Mode, check the event log for more detailed information."

The closest thing to this (aside from an archived, unanswered forum message on Tom's Hardware) that I can find is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316751 but that's slightly different.

I'm happy to confess that I'm way out of my depth when it comes to the intricacies of Windows, so any help would be much appreciated! I have a suspicion that a re-installation might be the only solution, but I thought I'd check and see...

Thank you!

On startup, my daughter's Dell Inspiron 1150 (OS Windows XP) displays a screen with the following:

"Memory write/read failure at 1118A000, read 640618F7 expecting 18F718F7
Decreasing available memory
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility"

It will start upon striking F1.
She moved all music & photo files to an external hard drive, we ran a spyware cleanup, removed all temporary & cookie files and ran a registry repair utility. I defragmented the C-drive. She's still having the same problem.
System Information shows Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB, Available Physical Memory 63.31 MB, Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB, Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB, Page File Space 1,017.73 MB. (all these numbers are Greek to me)
Any suggestions?

Today when I went to turn on my Samsung laptop (with Windows 7), I got a ""Logon Process Initialization Failure" error message. I didn't even get to the screen which asks for my password to access the computer's functions. I tried to reboot into safe mode, but I got the same thing again. I can't open any program or even get to my desktop screen.

I found a Microsoft hotfix that appears to be for this problem, and although I saved the .exe file to my thumb drive from my desktop computer, I'm at a loss as to how to install it on my laptop when it won't operate correctly to download and run it!

(The Microsoft link that seems to address my issue is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2615701).

The only thing that may have changed is that my old power cord to the laptop was frayed, and I ordered a new one off eBay. It's not a Samsung cord, but a replacement cord. My laptop worked fine with it for an entire day, then the following day is when this happened. I don't know if it's related to the problem or not. I sure hope I can resolve this problem; my laptop is nothing more than a five pound paperweight at this point.

Hey Guys, first of all Hi to everyone on the forums, its my first post!
Basically I have had this problem for a pretty long time now, every time I turn the computer on I get the message

> New CPU Installed! Please enter SETUP to configure your system.
> Press F1 to Run Setup
> Press F2 to load default values and continue

My computer works fine, its just annoying to have to press F2 all the time.
This started happening when I re-attached my whole motherboard onto a new case about 3 months ago. Everything works fine, but I get that message every time I
boot up the computer, and have to press F2 all the time. I tried switching the CMOS Jumpers from position 1-2 to 2-3 for 10 seconds like the motherboard manual told me,
plugged the cord back in, booted up but still the same problem..
I googled this matter, but there wasn't really anyone who had had the same problem as me. It seems like a rare problem.. My motherboard is a P4P800. What do you guys think?

I have recently bought a Kodak Easyshare M532, I didn't get the Easyshare software cd. I downloaded installer from the net and installed it. But I guess the online installation was faulty and it kept hanging. I removed Easyshare, now every time startup shows - "there was a problem starting c:\progra~2\Kodak\EasyshareSetup\$REGIS~1\Registration_8.3.30.1.s" , what do I do to get rid of this irritating notification?

A:Error msg. at startup-"there was a problem starting..."

Click "Start" and in the "Search programs and files" box type in

msconfig

It should find it for you. Run it and go to the "Startup" tab and see if the program causing the trouble is listed. If so, uncheck the box, reboot, then see if you've got it fixed.

I've tried all of the "solutions" here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392 with no luck

Before I use a last resort (like reinstalling the OS), I wanted to check some forums for any help.

Any and all help is very much appreciated,

A:"Bootmgr is missing" startup error

Hello there! AhellHound Welcome to the Seven Forums!

One thing I could say here is that if push comes to shove you could perform a repair install of the present Windows installation in order to repair the boot sector. Repair Install

The problem may not be as easily solved however if it is found that the boot sector ends up seeing a "boot sector unwritable" type error. The first thing you may have missed when trying the MS instructions however is a possible need to run the Startup repair tool a few more times to insure it finishes any repair it could make. IF and I say if the drive is seeing bad sectors at the front end you may be in for a disappointment however.

As of late for a friend on an older build with a drive now 6-7yrs. old in fact while it can still be seen at times with brand new drives as well as ones worn from use the Disk Check tool was run while booted live from the previous version's Vista dvd to run the "chkdsk c: /f" command at the command prompt option when suddenly seeing that type of error and Windows constantly failing to boot even after the last known to work had been used the last time the desktop was seen. A new drive had to be ordered.

That's the worst possible end. You may want to run a hard drive diagnostics tools to either confirm or be able to rule the drive out as the problem before anything else at this point. If the drive is found to good and troublefree the rest would be software/OS related which is better.

its in hebrew but never mind..

Anyway, when i log into Windows throw diffrent user, this error window dosent appers there.

I dont have a clue from where this came from, i havent downloaded any program that is called like that.

I've searched google and understood its a program for Firefox, (and im not even using firefox).

Anyway, tried Chkdsk, Eset Nod32 scan, Malewarebytes scan, Registery first aid scan, Nothing seems to help.

Please help.. !

A:"PasswordFox" error window at startup?

Hi,

The first thing you need to do is download MalwareBytes and performa a full system scan and see what results it produces.

If you don't know what the file is then it could be an infection and the scan would be the best course of action.

Okay before I get into it this started a while back
Since then an app I was trying trashed windows and I formatted same deal

So I really don't see any spyware keyloggers etc as being involved.
But just in case I have scanned clean with several scanners.

Here goes my attempt at an explanation...
Basically out of nowhere my laptops keyboard will go into what I'll describe as a diagnostic mode for lack of a better term.
Using my keyboard will simply repeat this pattern, "1234567890-=qwertyuiop[]asdfghjkl;'`\zxcvbnm,./-+\"

For example if I type "welcome" I would get "1234567".
If I come back a few minutes later and type it again I'd get "890-=qw"
Once I type enough to get to the end of that pattern it starts again.

However IE seems to be somehow involved but I can't tell you specifically how really. But in this case I launched a new IE window and it stopped.

I know it's not much to go on I've done my best to try and explain.
If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Kenny

A:Strange Keyboard "diagnostic mode"???

It is suggested that problem can be a bad system file.
go to start>command prompt>right click>run as administrator, type
scf /scanow hit enter, it should repair bad files if any (hopefully) see will that solve your problem

What is the difference between these two versions of Windows Vista?

- 66J-00003: Windows Vista Business English Upgrade North America DVD
(source: http://www.microsoft.com/canada/wow/save/eligibleproducts.mspx)
- 66J-00023: Windows Vista Business English Intl UPG DVD
(source: http://www.microsoft.com/italy/annunci/windows/generale/windowsvista....)

Can I legally use both of them in Italy?

A:Windows Vista "international" or "North America" version?!

It's probably just the languages available, the International version would probably have more languages and english for the default and less in the North American version, I can't see any reason why you couldn't use them in Italy.
