# If you haven't downloaded IE8 - Don't!

Q: If you haven't downloaded IE8 - Don't!

Just a little note, that IE8 came over with the latest updates from Microsoft and I downloaded it thinking that they improved it and ironed out all the previous problems with it, but they didn't! Big mistake!!!! I just recently went back to IE7 because there were too many websites that were causing me problems, plus my web printing was not working anymore for my HP printer and I found out that I could not print any of my cards in American Greetings!!!! I pay for that service and was very upset when I had a wedding to go to and could not print my card at the last min.!!!!! That was the staw that broke the camels back.....So, it was bye bye IE8, I am so disappointed in Microsoft for rushing this browser out to there knowing it has all these problems....Shame on you!!!!!

A: If you haven't downloaded IE8 - Don't!

Did you try the sites in Compatibility View?

I was at a friends house yesterday, and they just bopught a new Dell PC.
They are using AOL, cause they got 2 months for free, hmmmm

They like to use MSN Messenger to chat with friends, but when she goe's to e-mail somebody on her contact list, it opens with a
little windows that is a half in thick, by, about two inches long with the normal things at the top right corner to make the page bigger, put it in the task bar, and close.

To get the full page, she has to click on the box that opens the page all the way.
Any ideas? This is a new one for me.

A:This is one I haven't seen before

Try dragging it to full size (not the full window click) then hold the SHift key WHILE you click the X to close the window.
This may reset the open size to whatever size you created.

The Error is this.

INF txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing file. Status 14. Hit any key to
continue. Then the computer turns off and goes back to saying the same
thing.

They tell me they talked to Sony, and Sony says they have to get someone with a XP CD to install somewhat so they can get to the partition of the Harddrive that has the RESTORE CD's.

Can anyone explain really what needs to be done.

A:Haven't gotten the comptuer yet.

Howdy fatbobthefirst !

Window's setup errors usually occur due to hardware failure. That file is probably not missing or corrupt, but due to a bad memory chip, or a scratch on the CD...dust on the lens...setup is failing.
If you have a windows 2000 cd with sp2 slipstreamed...grab the W2K Service Pack 2, or applicable SP and extract and look for txtsetup.sif \i386\is = W2K Server, \i386\ia = W2K Advanced Server, \i386\ip = W2K Pro, \i386\id = W2K Datacenter Server, \i386\iw = W2K Powered.

This applied for Windows 2000 SP 4, so hopefully it will work for SP 2. Copy the txtsetup.sif according to your os into/onto the cd's i386 directory. When the setup is start it will find the txtsetup.sif and if you happen to copy it in the wrong place will still say it can't find or corrupt. you can actually try to copy it again and hit retry. If it goes and reboots, it should go into txtsetup mode part of the setup...It shouldn't complain on any of the generic drivers as the file should already be suited to your os/sp level.

If you needed to add raid drivers not included in the os/sp and/or such...you would do that before hand of course.

Now, when I try to get series 9, it won't let me, and I am assuming this is because I don't have the original. 1) Am I right? 2)Does anyone know where I can download the original. Greetings!

Recently, I have started getting popups, not necessarily while browsing the internet, which say "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." This is puzzling on two levels: one, I don't use Internet Explorer. Ever. Two, I don't have to be using the internet for them to appear. Watching a movie on my laptop is impossible because the popups always interrupt. These popups appear at least once every two minutes and are becoming unbearable. No matter how many times I click "send," "do not send," or "debug," these error alerts return. I do not have to be browsing the internet for these to appear!!! I have also been getting sporadic sound advertisements of an unknown source. I have tried everything I can think to try, which consists of downloading various spyware, adware, and virus scanning programs and letting them scan my computer. All of these have found nothing that has helped my problem. I admit that I am hardly computer-savvy, so I am sure that something can be done.

I am running Windows XP. Any additional information needed can be provided.

Any help would truly make me a happier person!
Thank you.

A:Please succeed where I haven't!!!!!

Well I guess you could say my computer is a virus galore, I can never really get rid of them not right now. Just recently my computer has been acting up again, I tried to install windows updates as it said I needed 15 very important ones, so I did that and then my computer reset and then it instantly went to windows repair and basically went in a loop for a half an hour before I gave up, then I decided to just start windows normally, and that worked, so now I am back on my computer, but I know there is a virus causing this some where, I have tried Jacee's idea about the flush.bat and I am scanning now, I am using Avast and Malwarebyes.

Does any one have any tips on getting rid of this it is really bugging me, and I have no idea what type of virus, I think it may be a back door trojan, because that is what Malwarebytes and Avast detects I swear I have deleted about 20-50 of them in the past 2 days.

Thanks.

A:Virus haven!

20 to 50 of them? If that is indeed the number of individual viruses, and not a count of files and registry keys, I would back up all important data online (if you connect an external drive, that can become infected) and do a clean install. It definitely sounds like you have an underlying problem.

Since this happened when installing 15 updates at once, it might just be a matter of needing to do 2 or 3 updates at a time, as doing many at once can cause a problem.

I'll try to make this as short as possible so....... I'm down in north Florida for an extended stay. My net connection is terrible so I have to go outdoors to be connected. Now anyone who's ever been in Florida knows that the bugs and insects here are ferocious and numerous. Having said that...... Theres these tiny little bright red spiders/mites. (They could possibly BE spidermites) About 3 weeks ago I had one get between the layers of my screen, don't ask me how , I touched my screen and squashed it. Its still there and I would like to get it out but thats not what I'm writing about. This morning while online I saw ANOTHER tiny tiny something crawling around inside my screen. I know it was inside because when I brushed it (no more squashing! lol) it just kept on going. Twenty minutes later it crawled speedily past my field of view again. Now , for my question(s). One.... how in the world did it get BETWEEN the layers of my screen and how can I remove it. Second, my Asus G74Sx has HUGE cooling vents in the back and I'm wondering if and how I could.....restrict them to insect invasion. Will listen to anything reasonable . Thirdly..... could there be insects (spidermites?) living IN my computer and how would I remove them?

Ok...... I just tried to do a screen capture to show the squashed bug..... its not showing on the capture but its there.

A:Here's one you haven't heard before.....

First thing I'd do is file a "bug" report with Asus.

Sorry. I couldn't resist.

I'm afraid the only thing constructive I may have to offer is to the name of your particular pest. I believe your poor machine may be infected with chiggers.

I also see all these messages (from 1 to 75): Tunnel-adapter for LAN-connection* (1-75)
medium status: medium disconnected (in Dutch "ontkoppeld")

So, I do have wireless connection, but the connection is really really slow sometimes (don't know if that has anything to do with it).. But I want my real physical adress! :p

If you're still using the original version or the SP1 version of Windows XP and you still haven't upgraded to SP2, you can order the upgrade CD from Microsoft for free. Just go here and provide the required information. The site says that shipping time is 4 - 6 weeks, but I received it in less than 2 weeks. The upgrade CD is advisable for those who are using a 56K dial-up connection because the 270 MB file is too large to download it from the Internet.

Note: The SP3 upgrade will supposedly be released later this year and will include the Internet Explorer 7.0 upgrade.

I've always been very conservative in applying updates, but in this case I now have quite a few that are on the list which I have to install. The question is whether it's safe to do a large number from the stock Update tool. Or should I install the System Update Readiness Tool and use that?

Are there any critical updates which have been shown to be problematic?

Running Win7 x64 Ultimate. Full retail installed on a clean drive.

A:Haven't done updates in a while - what's the best approach?

I would install critical updates first and important updates second. Install just a couple at a time to make sure your computer doesn't have any ill effects. If it does you can use system restore to revert back to its previous state. Once you've done all critical and important updates, then you can work on the optionals a couple at a time. I haven't experienced any problems with any of the updates on my 7 Pro.

I really need some support with this issue, it basically renders my PC usless for Games & Video. I have an old post about this same issue & I thought the problem was to do with my old keyboard driver but I don't even use that keyboard anymore and the problem has been back for a couple of months now!

While I play a game in the usual full screen mode, after a minute or so the game will minimize to the desktop, as you can imagine, that's incredibly annoying & dabilitating. There are no processes running that try to prompt me (That I can see) and I have stickykeys off, I am using Avast free but it also happened using Microsoft security with previous install of W7.
Re-installed graphics drivers ( I have latest compatable drivers) even tried older ones. Tried each individual setting in the nvidia control panel. Tried every available resoloution in "Game settings" and every changable setting in graphics/video options.
I always return all settings to their previous or default state.
Some suggestions I tried:
1. Have you tried switching to desktop when it happens to see if any windows or warnings have popped open? (Yes)
2. Perhaps your A/V program or firewall is prompting you for some action. (No it's not)
3.Windows 7 trying to change the colour scheme? (No)
4. Another service or app running in the background? (No)
5. Turn all non essential items off and make sure any updates have been done (java, flash etc) (Yes, check)

So I just scanned (quick scan) with MSE yesterday, and today it is telling me I haven't scanned in a while.

This happened a couple weeks ago too, so I just uninstalled and reinstalled and thought it fixed it but it's not.

One search suggested the system date and time might be incorrect, mine is showing correct date and time though.

I don't mind doing another uninstall / install but I don't want to make a habit out it.

Any thoughts or settings I can check?

A:MSE keeps telling me I haven't scanned in a while

Hi Derek,

There was a thread about this not too long ago, but I can't quite find it now. It went something along the lines of the OP used CCleaner to remove some registry entries that let MSE know when the last scan was done....or something along those lines. Could that be soemthing you had done recently?

Since its a reinstallation, I imagine those registry entries have been re-created so you wont see that issue again.

I'll keep hunting for the thread, and post a reference here if I find it.

Regards,
Golden

Hello phaartnokker, I am SifuMike and I will be helping you. You are running two antivirus programs (Antivir and AVG) at the same time It is not recommended to have this because it can cause file access issues. If there is an infection the multiple programs can block each other from dealing with the infected file and it also greatly slows your computer. See this: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.n...000031316555206 "Symantec recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."Start by choosing which you are going to run and uninstall the other.Reboot your computer normally.****************Your Java is out of date. Hello there,

I have had a couple viruses on my laptops before and I have been able to use TDSKiller and Combofix to repair them, but earlier today I encountered one that is troublesome because it will not let me run either of these. When I try to open many programs (including those two repair kits and Task Manager), the program starts to open and then closes, and a window opens that says "Virus Alert! Application can't be started! The file taskmgr.exe is damaged. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?" I have not chosen to activate this fake antivirus, but I do not know how to fix the problem. Any help I could get would be very much appreciated. Thanks so much!

Pretty much all I use a computer for is gaming and desktop publishing in creative suite. I tend to have tens of thousands of files that I have to search and store as well. So when I want to buy a new game like Battlefield 4 or a new software package like CS 7 I will buy it through the metro store? Will managing a huge number of files be easier with this interface?

A:Haven't been paying much attention to W8...

No.

Metro is not for managing files - it is simply for consumption.

The main interface (desktop) is for that .

Unfortunately, productivity has been relegated to second place.

I am building a new machine and need some technical answers.

Pentium 4, 3.0GHZ HT Prescott
Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000G ATX Intel Motherboard
2X Kingston ValueRAM 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM
ATI Radeon X800 Pro 256MB (already purchased for 80, good deal?)
Western Digital Caviar SE 250GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s
Rosewill TU-155 Black 0.8mm SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case Rosewill ATX12V 400W with P4 support Power Supply
ZALMAN CNPS7000B-ALCU 92mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan

First of all, is the memory good enough, or should i go with something such as Corsair? What is the difference anyways between Corsair and others? Also, the case comes with a 400W power supply. Is this adequate for all the stuff I have listed, or should I go with something different? Also, with a 3GHZ Prescott, how high could it conceivably be overclocked, and what would be a good number to overclock it to if it were on 24/7? Thanks a lot for your input, this is the best computer forum and site I have been too. Everyone is really cool and not elitist about helping people.

A:More questions...unless you haven't seen my other posts

Overclocking depends on each chip. 1 prescott might overclock really well while another might not. Just hope that your lucky and that you get a good one. Same thing for running them 24/7. I can overclock my 3200 to 2.8ghz, but I can only run it stable 24/7 at 2.65ghz (The equivalent of 4ghz pentium).

I haven't got the best chip, but it's still a good overclocker imho (it's stock clock is 2.0ghz).

For the graphic card, great deal ! Truly, very good. The chances that you can unlock to a x800xt are pretty good. You orginaly have 12 pipelines activated on the card, but you should be able by flashing your bios to activate 4 more pipelines and getting a full fledge 16.
They also overclock well, you should be able to get a 560mem/570mem(x2) without artifacts. If you get a good overclocking one 580/590. If it's great i've seen 605/615 on stock cooling.

I've got my x800GT at 590/600 with a zalman VF700cu. The GT I have doesn't unlock at all .

As for the RAM, it depends. Corsair and other elite brands will have lower lantency's, will support higher voltage (therefore you can overclock your ram further), etc. Kingston is still good ram though. You should be ok with kingston, unless you really want to push your ram.

As for you power supply, as long as you don't intend to sli or crossfire video cards and that you don't have a huge amount of extra peripherals (4 cd roms, usb coffee warmer, etc) 400-500 is enough. The amou... Read more

I have a column of numbers in Column "A" representing each week of the year. They go from "1" to "52". There is also another cell on this same sheet in another area that reflects which "week of the year" we are in. I would like to have the number in this "week of year" advance one number every seven days. For example, we have just finished the 7th Sunday of this year. This coming Sunday, I would like for this "week of year" cell to automatically change over to "8". Any ideas on how I may achieve this?

Hi all,

This is my first post here, so thanks in advance to all who take the time to read and to try and help with stuff on here

So, having been a Vista user for many years, I recently acquired a brand new Asus n551jx laptop, which came with Windows 8.1 preinstalled. After having numerous issues out of the box with the 8.1 setup provided, I decided it was easier to just do a clean install of Windows 10 rather than spend weeks wrangling with Asus' awful tech support.

I did a clean install of Windows 10 from DVD and the installation and activation went without a hitch (shock!). After being initially impressed by how clean and stable Win 10 appeared, this turned to disappointment when I realised that I only had a generic screen driver, no sound and was missing system tray icons for the NVIDIA card, bluetooth, etc. I was facing up to the prospect of spending hours manually installing these when I decided to run Windows Update and see what happened. I was pleasantly surprised to see it listed pretty much all the drivers i needed (including some ASUS ones, which I'd never have expected) along with a few Windows updates, and so I set them to download while I contiuned to tinker with my new setup.

Over time, I noticed that the display drivers and others were installed in real time as I was using the system, but when I checked on Windows Update it said 'waiting for install' next to said drivers, which I thought was odd. Once all the updates had downloaded, I then ended up doing... Read more

Hey guys, I'm running XP home with a raid 1+0 and installing to Home works just fine. I can format and re-do my old XP home no problem at all. The problem appears when I try to upgrade to XP Pro or anything above my current version (Being XP Home) I should also mention this is the older version of home before SP2 was integrated... not sure if that matters, the updates give you now up to SP3 but figured I should include that information.

Anyways, to give detail... doing a boot install with home, press F6... add my raid from the floppy disk for drivers and continue down the line. At the end... i should reach 1 large drive made up of 4 80Gig drives totaling around 310Gigs plus or minus. Works fine... no problems, I delete the old XP info, format and re-install good ol' home.

When trying to upgrade with anything outside of this XP home... such as going to pro, doesn't matter 32 or 64 version... I follow the proper steps as above, add my drivers, windows says that the supported drivers are newer in the install... I still use the drivers from the floppy (tried doing it with the windows supplied and the floppy drivers) it always shows 4 separate drives when reaching the final screen to delete/install new OS rather than 1 large drive.

How come on Home it works just fine? I follow the procedure, no problems... but when I try to chage OS to XP Pro it causes this situation where it shows 4 80 gig splits rather than 1 large drive? I can't seem to figure this out..... Read more

Maybe it's your PRO disc?
What exactly does it say on the disc?

I have many, many popups and after about a 1/2 hour my computer automatically shutsdown. I have ran adware but when using trendmicro to look for problems my computer restarted itself. I used Hijackthis and also the Hijackthis Analyzer in which I hope to post the result. I had to use my laptop in order to get this to you.
Any help would be nice.
Thanks

Hello, all. I started noticing some serious slowdowns on my computer after I wrongly clicked "Yes" on a UAC window for a file called "UpdateFlash_[number].exe." After that, I've been getting popups galore from my virus scanner saying that it caught malware (these are what it's found and failed to remove over the past few days: GoFileExpress, Miuref.F, CeeInject.gen!KK, Zbot, Simda, Fareit) but never actually removes them. I've scanned with MBAM, MBAR, and even tried removing it with HJT but alas, nothing has worked.

The requested logs have been attached. Looking forward to, hopefuly, getting this resolved.

I've been following these forums for years and this is my first time asking for help. Thank you in advance in addition to a thank you for many years of excellence in virus remedy.

I got the TDL3 rootkit virus on the 14th of this month, and was terrified beyond belief. I'll give a history of events as far as I can remember....

-Got the virus
-Got notices about the fake "Security Center 2010" telling me I had an infected computer and all
-Couldn't open any programs
-Rebooted my computer to try and run some programs right when I started it, but couldn't
-Not being the most knowledgeable about this kind of stuff, I used the mobile internet on my phone to look up what to do, and was brought to some threads here
-The second I logged back on my computer, I CTRL+ALT+DEL'd to try and stop the malware programs, which worked
-I ran scans with AVG Free, MBAM, and Hitman Pro.
-AVG and MBAM both eventually found some files, and successfully deleted them. The "Security Center 2010" program no long comes up.
-Hitman Pro found some as well, and those were deleted. But, the program said I had traces of the TDL3 Rootkit virus, which it could not delete
-I found out from here to get TDSSKiller, which found some things and successfully deleted them, as well.
- (If I remember correctly >_< ) After that, Hitman Pro no longer said about the traces of the TDL3 rootkit virus
-The whole time, whenever I tried to search in the Google search bar in Firefox, I would be redirected to a site "http://search.search-tab.com/index.php?cx=!partner-pub-8451664467457009%3Ajglzz2os78e&cof=FORID%3A10&ie=utf-8&q=google&site... Read more

hello and thanks for taking the time to read my post.
As the title suggest my old computer seems to have accumulated lots of bad stuff over the years due to indifference and neglect due to sporadic use.

But now I need to use this computer more frequently and would like to clean it up therefore I would appreciate some help.

I do not have the windows CDs anymore as they are certainly lost. I took the risk of running some of the tools used here and on other sites at my own risk hoping for a miracle cure but this did not work out. I've read the "read this first" section and performed the scans and have posted the results below (should be attachments too). But first let me describe some of the problems I am having with this computer that have happened recently:

1. Firefox stopped working one day all of a sudden. Reinstalling the program would let it work for awhile, but then malfunction.
2. Using IE, the browser set crawler as my homepage.
3. Sometimes the browser would redirect me to a page
4. Sometimes when clicking on a link from a google search the destination site would be not what I wanted but instead some other site.
5. Playing diablo II worked fine for a few days but then I encountered the "cannot verify version" problem that the blizzard tech site suggests could be due to a virus/malware. Reinstalling the game would fix this problem but upon exiting the game and trying to play again later this problem would occur again.

Hello, Welcome to TSF.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

I apoloized for this long delay.

If you still need help please submit these logs for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

Hi,

I have a major problem, every computer that connects to my network, becomes infected with viruses & malware/trojans

I haven't slept in 3 days, I've been up all night trying to get rid of them!

I currently use Norton Internet Security 2007

I downloaded Mcafee, to see i it would find, them, after my old trusty "AVG" fell short in the beginning.

I also have installed & run a sqaured on all machines, with no luck, just finds cookies (low risk)

I have more svchost.exe processes running in my task managerr than carter has liver pills! lol ) I may be sleep deprived, but I still have my sense of humor, it's the only thing keeping me sane at this point)

I'm a freelance web/graphic designer, and also a musician.

Ok, lets deal with the desktop "patients'" first:

Primary: I'm unable to print, open my wonderful adobe CS3, and other graphic editing software, my recording studio software (SONAR 6 & Adobe Audition, I seem to be able to surf the internet quite alright, except when I watch or listen to audio, it cuts out for long periods of time (Not a good thing, when you're trying to listen to stuff you've cut)
I have a lot of pop ups, my browser sometimes shuts itself down on it's own, and so does my system (restart), especially when I end those little svchost.exe processes (them little suckers, then really get pissed)

okay, i've realized i've got the about:blank hijacker. i've got spybot, adaware, hijack this, and adwareaway on the machine now.

the original symptoms were that nothing explorer related worked, no internet, no windows explorer, nothing.

i've gone through and run adaware, then spy bot, then hijack this for a log (where i found out i had this), then tried the adawareaway removal tool.

i've renamed (i think) the file in regedit.

things are sort of working again, can't get on the internet. i know this means the thing wasn't completely removed.

i can't run the recovery console because Ndetect fails (a problem i've also encountered out in the field but there it comes with a "cannot repair because drive is corrupt" message, more info than you need but an explanation of this would rock)

here's my second log, which one of these things is not like the other??? where's the blue meanie???

and yes, i have sleep issues and play a lot of games online in the middle of the night... ahem...

What's the situation with getting new Critical Updates that may come out while I wait to install SP2? Will MS stop offering them to my computer? If I see a Critical Update offered, should I NOT get it (because it may require SP2 to run on)?

Will forthcoming patches and fixes assume I have SP2, and will I be unprotected against yet-to-be-discovered browser vulnerabilities, or yet-to-be-developed threats (maybe a new Sasser worm)?

A:What if...new Critical Updates but haven't installed SP2?

Most critical updates will work without SP2 at least for a while

any that specifically depend on sp2 will inform you

take any critical updates offered now but get SP2 as soon as you can, it does install several good extra security settings

Hi all, I'm a first-timer at this, so please bear with me. I just built my first custom PC. The specs are below:

K* Triton (GA-K8U-939) Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 2000 processor
2x Kingston 512 MB RAM
2x Ultra 512 RAM
Power 400 power supply
nVidia GForce FX5500 AGP video card
Western Digital 80GB HD

I'm setting up a new computer for it's first boot and from the get go everything is excrutiatingly slow. I went into BIOS and that all is working at normal speed, but at the command promt, everything I do takes much much longer than it should. I'm booting from a boot disk so that I can install my Windows 2000 Pro OS and the probrams like scandisk and fdisk and format are taking hours. The Hard Drive is relatively new, but had some stuff on it, so I decided to start over.

When I tried installing the OS, I got the error: "Windows is unable to install Boot Loader" when trying to install.
Then, I typed : "dir c:" and got a bunch of gibberish (after like 5 minutes wait).
Then, I tried "fdisk" and got the error: "Error Reading Fixed Disk"
Lastly, I ran scan disk and it took 6 hours just to get through the first 2 parts of it. It did find and fix 2 errors, but I just can't wait forever so I gave up on that temporarily.

Anybody have any ideas why the system would be running so slowly? And more importantly, what can I do to get things working at a functional level?

A:Extremely Slow, Haven't Even Installed an OS Yet

Hi

I have Version 1511 (OS build 14295.1000) installed and there does seem to be a problem at least on my PC. Whenever I shutdown I always get the message to click cancel to return to save my data whether I have any data to save or not. That is the first thing. The next is that it says to click Cancel to return to save the data but immediately I do it carries on shutting down or restarting.

Currently I have no way of communicating this (or any other problem I come across) to Microsoft. I understand that I ought to be able to use either Insider Hub or Windows Feedback but I have access to neither. I have just finished reinstalling the same version again as others have said this has worked for them - no joy for me though.

So my question is: how am I supposed to get bug reports back to Microsoft? Can anyone give me any idea why I may not have these apps on my PC? If I'm supposed to have them how can I install them? Finally, is there any other way of submitting bug reports to MS? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Tracey

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium.
When I tried to log on today, I was asked for a Windows password. I have never set a password, hence the confusion.
I checked out a number of possible solutions but did not get anywhere.
Then I remembered I have an old HDD on the same machine. It was giving so much trouble some years ago that I was advised to buy a new HDD.
The old HDD also has Windows 7 Home Premium.
I was trying a possible solution I had found online. I was trying to get into safe mode via F8 but only got the boot sequence. I changed the boot sequence so that the desktop boots to the old HDD and that is where I am now.
I want to remove the password protection so that I can revert to my other HDD which has new programs and data.
My technical knowledge is minimal. I shall be grateful for any advice offered.
Thank you.

A:Windows password requested when I haven't set one

Sorry but our rules clearly state that we don't help with password issues.

Since there's nothing we can do I'm closing this thread.

Hi. I have Spybot S&D and Adaware. For the last couple months I've tried to update these programs and there hasn't been any new updates in this time. I find this strange and was wondering if spyware isn't blocking me from receiving these updates. Also, my dsl connection likes to stop working on me from time to time and I have to either re-boot my computer or recycle the modem to get it working again. It's like my computer's not even hooked up to the internet when this happens, but I can still play online with my xbox when this happens. Maybe it's an issue with my router? I'll post a hijack this! log.
Thanks, any help would be appreciated. P.S. I recently switched to Qwest Dsl from Mediacom cable internet and this problem would occur with the cable, but a reboot of the computer always fixed it.

Hey all,

A problem with my MSE has come up about a month ago on my main PC, running Win7 64-bit.

The problem is, more than once a day, the MSE tray icon turns orange and a message says "You haven't run a scan in a while. Please run a quick scan now.". This message comes up very often, even after I run the scan, and restart my PC. I have the scheduled scan disabled on all my computers, but this problem only happens on this one. I have tried re-installing MSE, but nothing seems to help.

I use MSE on all my computers, a combination of XP and 7, and have never had this issue on anything else. I love MSE and would prefer not to switch to another anti-virus.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it !

Well firstly I'll start by saying: Hiya! To everyone, I am new in this community and hope you guys may be able to help me on an issue I've had..
Back in 2011 I had a desktop PC (an eMachine), Unfortunately it died, I was able to recover the Hard-Drive though, I have a lot of family pics and videos as well music that I DO NOT want to lose, I bought a 3.5 Hard Drive enclosure and installed it.
While I had problems with the ownership of the disk and other type of permission issues (Which isn't a problem anymore, I fixed that) however, Now that I do have access to the hard drive whenever I try to get into a folder or put in a path (Example: F:\Documents and Settings\user ___\) It'll give me a message as: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. (and you know the rest), I tried different types of fixes such as:the fix manager error and other things I actually found on this forum and have had no luck, I need you guys' knowledge, these files are really important for me. I would appreciate it a lot.
Lastly, Thanks so much for taking your time in checking my thread and attempting to help. Much Love fellas.

A:lnk. Problems (Tried a number of things and haven't worked yet)

Does it stop you from browsing further in? Why not copy your pics, videos and music to another folder and delete the unnecessary user folders?

Hello all... I'm new around here and looking for some general suggestions... I am a basic computer user. Nothing fancy. I have a five year old Dell computer running on Windows XP... we only use our computer for basic functioning... email, word processing, internet access, picture editing, a few basic software programs. I try and maintain my computer to the best of my knowledge... I clean out old files, I run spybot frequently to search for spyware and what not, and I also have McAfee security suite that is always active and up to date.

Having said that... my computer has really been sluggish lately. Start up takes a long time.... I can often tell the computer is getting bogged down... especially when more than one application is running at once. This is a new development...

Also, I sometimes get messages that says my windows virtual memory is low? I have no idea what this means but am wondering if it isn't linked to my sluggish performance overall?

I've done a bit of research on registry cleaning... but backed out because of the conflicting reviews as to whether or not it is necessary and helpful... I do not want to risk damaging windows and having to redo my entire system. Are registry cleaners a good idea? If so, is there one that someone can recommend?

If registry cleaning isn't a good idea, is there anything else I can do? I'm venturing out in to computer speak now (don't laugh) could I need more RAM?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions&... Read more

I just shipped 40 computers to our partner last month. On each one, I personally entered the product key and saw the activation process completely successfully: The "your Windows is Genuine" message appeared at the completion of each activation.

Now, after the systems have been shipped to the other side of the country and installed in the field, we have most if not all of the system displaying "your Windows is not genuine" to OUR CUSTOMERS!!!

What the hell happened and what do intend to do about it? (Apparently, this has been going on for years...why wasn't it fixed???)

Hello, i'm a computer tech, and usually pretty good at removing viruses, but this one has me stumped.
It appears to be rootkit of some kind (a zero access i think) that is causing google redirects on this PC.
I've scanned it with combofix, bitdefender remotely, GMER (which removed what it said was a zero access rootkit), and Hitman Pro. Combofix initially deleted a few files but currently comes out clean.
I've tried running TDSSkiller, but that or avast's awr rootkit scanner just won't run no matter what i do. I've tried those from safe mode, after running Rkill, and from safe mode- command prompt, which has solved this kind of issue for me in the past. In this case though, i cannot seem to get this infection removed.
Can you provide some advice on where to go next with this?

A:Google redirect - haven't found anything that can remove it

Hello you will need to repost as it does appear to be a ZA rootkit.Having run ComboFix we need to see that and a DDS log. Please go here....Preparation Guide ,do steps 6 - 9.Create a DDS log and post it in the new topic explained in step 9 which is here Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs and not in this topic, thanks.Skip the GMER step and instead post the ComboFix log you posted earlier.Let me know if that went well.

I haven?t been able to successfully get into certain sites using Internet Explorer8. The scary part is that I?m able to log in to secured sites.
Every thing is OK when I log in as administrator, the problem is when every body else use it.

I should also say; every thing started after I got ready of a malware (thanks to the advice on this on forum using Malwarebytes? AntiMalware).
I?m using AGV anti-virus Free and I don?t know ho to set the firewall on it.

A:I haven’t been able to successfully get into certain sites using Internet Explorer8 !

It's possible you're still infected with malware...let's make sure you're not before we go further. Please post a in the Am I infected? What do I do? sub-forum with a description of your problem, the steps taken so far, and a link back to this topic (they will want to know why you suspect malware). Please note: the Malware Response team are always overwhelmed, and it could take a few days to get your first reply. Just be patient and don't "bump" your topic by replying to it, as that will only further delay a response (MRT members are looking for topics with 0 replies...if you reply to your own first, it will appear that you are already receiving help and thus delay receiving actual help). If you still have problems after being declared clean, they'll send you back here.Good luck.

About a week ago I noticed a problem with my desktop.  I can't open any jpg files. I double click them and nothing happens.  When I right click on my jpg's they show and show open with it shows Windows Photo Viewer.  If they are in a folder on the desktop they open yet very slowly. When I click on any Microsoft Word or Excel files where they are on my desktop or my documents I get the following error. "File is in use.  Auto Center Manager, doc is locked for editing by 'another user'.

When I run a video file I get a message that says, "Windows Media Player has stopped working".  If I download an email file to my desktop then I can't open it.

Now I have an error which pops us.  It says "Windows Explorer has stopped working". My screen flashes, go blank and then comes back up with the desktop after a couple of seconds.  I have run my Security Essentials, Malaware Bytes, Spybot and Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal  programs and they show nothing wrong.

I tried using System Restore yet the two dates from a week ago didn't work and the only other dates were today.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, John

Hello guys. I still need help on this. ===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been respo... I recently got cable internet (woohoo!) for the first time, and subsequently signed up for Vonage to cut down on the phone bills. So far, so good. However, my girlfriend and I each have laptops (hers is Win 2000, mine WinXP) and don't like the whole switch out cables/resetting modems deal. We haven't tried it at all yet since getting Vonage set up, so I don't know how that works (if both boxes even need to be reset or what). Anyway, we don't have a lot of desk space to use for both laptops to be set up at once, so a wireless option seems more sensible than a multi-port wired router (or whatever it would be). That way we can work on the couch or a table or something. Anyway, so here's what I have: the two aformentioned laptops (2000 is a Dell and XP is a Sony Vaio), and a Motorola SB5120 SURFboard cable modem (and a vonage box). I'm new to the world of wireless, but as I understand it, some wireless routers have modems built-in and some do not? Is there any real advantage to one over the other? Assuming my full refund from Best Buy on the modem I have goes through, I could theoretically sell it online and just get a wireless modem/router, I suppose, but that's a lot of hassle, and I'm a low-hassle kind of guy (I want to do things right however, which often interferes with my hassle policy).

Anyway, so what kind of hassle am I looking at? Also, any recommendations on a wireless router (make/model) that's good and reasonably priced?... Read more

A:some wireless questions I haven't found answers to

I would first contact your cable provider to see what they would reccomend as far as routers since you are also using the Vonage VOIP. If you do get a router with wireless get 802.11g capability and make sure your wireless adapters for the PC's/laptops are also 802.11g

According to MS Security Essentials, my PC is at risk because I "haven't scanned in a while" (i.e. five hours ago). How often does this thing think I should scan? It's a bug, right?

A:MS-Essentials-claims-I-haven't-scanned-in-a-while fail

When and how often does this notice appear? Immediately after startup or when you're in the middle of doing something? Does the notice disappear after a bit and things change to a green (protected) status or do you have to re-scan your machine? If the notice appears immediately upon startup it's possible you're just experiencing a bit of lag time before MSE fully loads. Especially if it disappears on its own.

If you recently scanned your machine but then install a system image (for example) the MSE will tell you you're unprotected, need to update, need to rescan, etc.
