I am constantly plagued by this happening when my computer goes into auto update... Can anyone give me some answers as to what is going on...?

A:Failure Configuration Window 8 Updates

If the updates are failing at a certain point and reverting. Try this (copied from Microsoft forum -- this worked for me):

Hit windows key + R to open Run command.
Type in msconfig.exe and hit enter
go to the Services tab on the top
Check the box on the bottom that says hide all microsoft services
Click Disable all
Restart the computer
Install update
After installation follow the same instructions but click enable all instead of disable all and restart again and everything should be good. Hopefully it works for others.

Hello

First of all, I thank you for your attention.

I cannot perform any "Windows update" issue since the 23/08/2016.

Each time I reach the "Windows Update" screen, I get the following error message :

In french : "Redémarrer l'ordinateur pour installer d'importantes mises à jour"

In english: "Restart the computer to install importante updates"

Then, after rebooting, nothing change.

After further investigations, I get the following error message:

In French : "windows update ne peut pas actuellement rechercher des mises à jour car vous devez tout d'abord redémarrer votre ordinateur afin de terminer l'installation précédente."

In English : "windows update cannot research update because you must first restart your computer in order to finish the previous installation".

Then, I've recreated a new catalog by executing these commands:

net stop wuauserv

ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SoftDist.old

net start wuauserv

Now all services are running but I still cannot perform updates.

First ever Post I think (memory at 77 not brilliant): with updates first received error 0x8024402C.
Tried lots advice from different sites: regarding Proxy etc.; CHKDSK; Repair from installation CD; SFC /scannow; produced sfcdetails.txt;today ran KB947821.
following 947821 tried updates again this time Code 66A unknown error.
Produced CBs.zip but it's 19.3MB so I'm attaching (I hope!) an SFC SCANNOW.zip which I hope, in my ignorance, contains the uncorrected Corrupt files.
Hope I've everything correct only at my advanced senility .....

A:KB2604121+KB2468871 update failure+ SFC /scannow failure to repair

These are not errors as such - MS says they are the result of miscoding the files in a couple of updates as being static rather than variable.
You can either leave them alone, or uninstall the updates concerned - KB3022345 and KB3068708

As far as your WU problems are concerned, we need at least the CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.Persist.log files, together with the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file.

I'm not sure whether this question belongs in a software forum or this one, but when I now attempt to open any of my files of saved pictures I'm getting the following message; "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.'

What application is it referring to? I do not know what application is used to open up pictures, so I don't know what to attempt reinstalling to hopefully correct the problem.

Anyone have an idea of what this application is or how I could determine what it is?....or what this new problem may be?

Thanks...

Hi, this is my first entry to this site so bare with me if i mess it up

a few months ago i let my sister borrow my laptop. when i got it back the next day i turned it on and it started up as usual but before it went to the desk-top it came up with-

configuring updates: stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete
please do not turn off your computer

this is nothing new but it stays on 0% for 1/2 minutes then restarts, goes back to this page and does the same again, round and round in a loop.

i left it running like this for a couple of days to see if anything happened but still the same

does anyone know how to fix this?

A:update configuration HELP

Possibly, your sister powered down the laptop during updates. Try system restore from recovery console:If you have Windows XP CD... (if you don't have Windows CD, scroll down)1. Boot from the CD.2. When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts. Select the repair or recover option by pressing R:3. You'll find yourself at this screen:4. Once you are at the Recovery Console you will be given at least one choice of Windows installations. Normally the choice you want is the number 1 choice. Click the number 1 key at the "top" of the keyboard and click enter.NOTE: at this point your numbers to the right of your keyboard are turned off. If you insist on using these keys for your numbers remember to hit the Numbers Lock key before clicking a number over there or your computer will automatically reboot and you will have to wait through the previous steps to get back to the console. 5. You will be given a message asking for the administrator password. Unless someone or something has messed with your computer there is no password so you just click the Enter key. 6. This will bring you to a prompt that says: C:\WINDOWS>7. Type: cd \ Press EnterNote: between "cd" and "\" there should be a "blank space" otherwise the command won't work8. The prompt should now say:C:\>9. Type: cd system~1\_resto~1Press Enter.===============================================================================Note: If it gives... Read more

I was running Windows XP previously and I was using a D-Link DWL-G650 rev.B wireless card. The card itself worked just fine during the activation process but once Windows boots, it says the device fails to start. I do see in Windows Update that there is an update for this device. I can uninstall and reinstall this device and it works for a minute or so. I have completed a few other updates but when I try to run the update for the wireless card, it says it fails. I tried a few different things but I broke down and bought a new wireless adapter but is there a way to download updates for use on a different computer (i.e. I download the update at work and run it at home)

I just installed a bunch of Optional and Recommended Updates, but was sure to exclude the Bad Guys for the W10 Upgrade stuff: KB3035583 and KB2952664

So I still don't know if this is the best or not. I was not accepting Optional and Recommended before, but since having this Update issue though I would change my actions.

This is my current setting:
1. ?Check for Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them? Is this good, or should I got with checking for them Manually.

Now wondering what this setting should be:

Hi all,

Need some extra help here. I attempted to get the debugging tools to read the minidump files post-mortem, but can only get into safe mode, which doesn't help me. I've attached the zip of the output from the jcgriff2 app.

I'm not positive, but it may be related to an attempt to install Spanish & Japanese optional language packs to Windows 7 Ultimate installation alongside a recommended update.

Initially, it crashed during start up at the 'configuring windows' screen at 15% into it. Two system restores later to take me back two updates, and now it returns to the 'configuring windows' screen on startup and crashes at 0%. Not sure if additional system restores will do much good.

Thanks,

Hi guys, I've been having this problem the last few days where I am unable to update my trend micro antivirus. Every time i try to update i receive a message saying "could not connect to the server, please check your internet connection"" despite having full internet access. I have also been having problems with windows update, where updates continuously fail whenever i try to update them. Additionally i noticed that while browsing the internet my connection occasionally timed out, so i pinged a large website like goal.com on cmd and saw that the connection timed out. I ran a full antivirus scan using the trend micro and the kaspersky tool (KVRT.exe) and found no threats to be detected. I also tried using malwarebytes to scan the computer but when i installed it it required to update its databases before scanning and hence that update also timed out. I tried flushing the dns and and resetting the ip using netsh as well as other past solutions found on here to no avail. Your help and time would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I have been attempting various 'fixes' on a Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop since the release of Windows-10 Build-1511.  The original Win-10 installation was fine but the 1511 Update consistently failed at 40% (23% into the Drivers & Features part).  Non of the 'fixes I tried actually worked and the installation continued to collapse at 40%.
Last night I was trying a new (to me) Driver Updating program from Auslogics (Driver Updater) in an attempt to fix an issue on my Advent Desktop - after purchasing the full copy of the driver updater it downloaded drivers which other driver update programs had not found before and it DID fix my issue.  Consequently, I decided to try it on the Dell laptop as I wondered if it was a driver issue that was preventing the update to Build 1511.
The Auslogics Driver Updater found half a dozen drivers that Neither Driver Max nor Driver Booster 3 had found and after installing them I tried the Windows Update again.  This time it ran through to completion without any problems at all.  I am still uncertain as to which of the drivers was the problem but obviously Microsoft needs to take a look at their update code and to download necessary drivers when an issue is identified (or at least give a more meaningful error message than merely "The update has failed".

I hope this helps others with the same or similar problems with the 1511 update.  I would be interested to hear how you go on.

I tried F8 going to safe mode, but configuation step 3 takes over again, goes to 99% and shuts down to restart.
I tried the vista 64 sp1 disc...cannot acccess another restore point since it says the system is already in restore mode....just never gets there with the endless 3rd step update configuration loop.
The disc also does not offer the repair/update mode as an option...only full install.
I do have norton ghost 14 on the system...so there is a complete backup file on another internal drive...but no way to get to it to initiate a recovery.
VERY FRUSTRATING!!!
Could time remedy the situation...letting the computer lay idle for a few days...then try to boot up??? I've heard that this on occaision could work with Vista.
Any other thoughts???
Thanks!

BTW, computer is a hp desktop with Vista Ultimate 64 sp1, 4 gb ram, and intel dual core processor, with a bunch of bells and whistles.

Can you get to bios setup so you can change the boot order to boot from the Vista install CD?

Had this problem on 2 machines; I read and tried all the fixes suggested on the internet; about a dozen of them over and over again.
Problem is the HARDDRIVE!
I had a fresh install and had the problem with existing harddrive.
Also had problem on an up and running computer about 4 months old; just never got around to fixing it.
I tried all the fixes on the new one to no luck. I know some windows setup settings look for certain hardware for some setup processes so I tried an old drive I have kicking around. I Cloned the new drive onto it and ran the computer and then SP1 and all worked. I cloned back to the new drive and about 187 updates have now installed. It's working perfectly.
I had the same problem on the second computer and cloned it onto a different drive and then to an SSD also; it worked on both drives; also had 187 updates install.
Even after reinstalling the OS twice and immediately trying the SP1 it still didn't work until I cloned to the older harddrives.
Finally!!

Hi,

I have an Acer netbook running windows 7 starter...for several days each time I close the laptop there are updates that attempt to install but fails to do so for some reason...there are also issues of configuration, seemingly every time I start the laptop.

I have read the uploader tool page but before going through this process would like to ask why the laptop fails to update ? ...I recently got rid of any microsoft office programs...does this have anything to do with the failure to update ?

below are the updates that have failed several times ... sorry but the image is very small !

A:Windows 7 update failures and configuration issues.

It`s a couple of days since I posted the above but the updating failure continues...I`ve no idea if the failure is caused by this laptop not in fact having the required internal programs to ensure the updates are accepted...something is obviously not right.

edit ti add...maybe the laptop just doesn`t need these updates...?

Simple solution found for Dual Boot errors!

Here is an update. Since no one else has seemed to find a solution I actually managed to find my own. Just to recap you on what had happened to me, I was trying to dual boot Windows 7 x64 with Windows Vista Ultimate x64. Somewhere in my use with Vista my BCD was corrupt/deleted and caused this error to appear. (Windows could not update your computer's boot configuration.) After searching my computer I found the registry settings were correct, and file access to the folder that contained the BCD was correct, However my BCD was corrupt/missing and so I was unable to finish the installation and get my computer to dual boot. I found this out by typing bcdedit.exe in command with admin access and it gave me the warning "BCDedit.exe could not be run. BCD is either corrupt or missing".

In order to fix this it was quite simple. I had to use the original installation disc for vista to repair my computer's boot files. Unfortunately I didnt have an install disc that would work with vista since I purchased mine before SP1 came out, so in order to repair it I had to create a slipstream disc with the SP1 updates added to it. after repairing I instantly was able to see both Windows 7 and Windows Vista in my boot manager when I restarted my computer. I easily fixed and finished installation with out a hitch, and I'm now staring at internet explorer inside of Windows 7 typing this message. I hope this will help anyone else ou... Read more

I've been trying to upgrade from Win XP to Vista Ultimate. I have tried installing several times. The first time, the computer got hung up on expanding files at 21% and I rebooted. After that I have been getting the msg "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed. I've check on a few forums and someone always says to restore the default value for the UpperFilters registry entry and then restart computer. In the steps that follow, it says to modify UpperFilters and to type PartMgr and click ok. This seems to work for some people, I however already had the PartMgr value on there. Can someone tell me what I can do, besides doing a fresh install?

So yesterday automatic Windows update installed IE10, today I noticed that links in certain applications open in IE10 instead of my configured default browser, which every link from this or any other application used to open in before that update and the reboot that followed the update.
I checked the Default Programs section in the system control panel, expecting maybe Microsoft wanted to get themselves in any more trouble with the EU and changing the default to IE. This was not the case however, all the associations were still pointing to the configured default browser, I noticed however I could not uncheck the defaults already set.
So despite the obvious configuration being correct, links would still open in IE10 even after yet another reboot.
I went ahead and checked the registry associations, and found that http(s) protocol as well as htm(l) filetypes were associated with Internet Explorer with various EditFlags set (presumably to prevent changing them through the user interface, or to ignore the user interface settings).

Seriously Microsoft? Don't you have enough trouble yet?

Could someone please direct me to this definition so I can download & install it?

Hi guys, I'm currently using my backup of which is an old novatech model, running xp. I beleive someone may have manually turned it off at the button when it was closing down and installing updates. Since then it will only load through the windows logo into a black screen, with a responsive mouse. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could provide, thank you.

I am building images for fog deployment.
I started with a fresh image from last year (updated to June 2015) and attempted to install all available updates on a HP dx2400.
I left the process to complete overnight and was greeted with "Failure configuring windows updates. Reverting Changes."
I reimaged that machine back to the 2015 image and attempted it again with the 2400 and a Compaq 500b (different images, both 7 Pro x64), receiving the same error.
The 2015 images have performed flawlessly on hundreds of computers, and updated successfully during the year.

This should not be relevant, as the drive was wiped in the imaging process, but these machines did receive the free upgrade to 10 before being imaged.

I tried reinstalling or Repairing Windows XP Media from an OEM disk because I wanted to break a mirrored Raid setup. I had a few problems because I forgot to reset my bios to non-raid, but I eventually got it working. After it finally finished installing, it started to update. One of the updates was SP3 and I decided to go ahead with it, but it fails every time and does not give me an error message. It just quits and the updater says it failed! Whoopee, well I could see that!
I would just let it go but there are a few more updates included that are only for SP3 like Framework for SP3. Every time I turn on the computer it tries to update and fails. I had a problem once before where something got stuck in update mode and bugged me for 3 months. I finally got rid of it by deleting a folder but I cannot remember where it was.
Before I reinstalled XP, everything was up to date and when it started to update it didn’t go through all the updates that was on it before. I checked the update list and its all there, but I don’t believe it.
I have TWO questions.
1) I want to know if when you reinstall Windows does it keep the original updates?
2) And 2nd, how can I find out what is causing the SP3 update failure?

A:Another XP SP3 update Failure!

Help

The reason for the problem is not given on this "fix" page, but a person had the same problem and another person suggests (the above) solution Here.

You should read the second link before deciding to try the fix offered on the first. Hope this helps. If it does (or doesn't) please post back and report. This error seems both rare and new.

EDIT:

I psted these links after only casually reading them. At first, it seemed fairly clear: Problem-Solution.

But on second read-through it looks a little more complicated. As I understand it, there are some files that assist Windows Update in downloading and installing each Update and the General "fix" that is suggested for problems like these is to delete this (or these) files and allow Windows Update to rebuild them automatically.

But the second link involves a situation where are person tried to do just that, and instead of solving their problem, instead they got the same error message as yours.

Earlier in this thread someone had suggested to simply install SP2 over the existing O/S, and I assume the strategy here was to simply overwrite the problem file(s) and let SP2 take over the Update function. Which seems logical to me, only it didn't work for this particular User. You should read this thread (for second link above) and see what you think. I am getting the idea that this problem is "out of my league" and am going to only watch for a while... Read more

I received the MSI GX60 yesterday and while using it for the 2nd day, my computer restarted in order to complete updating windows 8. However this update was interrupted by the laptop suddenly shutting down. I then proceeded to use the F3 recovery function to restore Windows to factory settings, but again as with the update, the laptop abruptly shut down. Now I can log into windows, but a lot of the components and system files seem to be missing and it doesn't look the same as when I first used it.I tried to repeat the F3 recovery option again, but after I press the button to initiate the reset, I just get stuck at a blank screen. This might be due to the actual recovery files being missing due to the abrupt shut down I mentioned earlier.

I waited for the new laptop for 1 and a half months to get shipped to me (due to various reasons) and was looking forward to playing some new games on it. But it had to mess up on the second day haha, so I'd really appreciate any help you guys could offer. Thanks.

A:Win 8 64x Update failure

When you say "abruptly shut down" do you mean it just switched off instantly?

If so, that sounds like a hardware problem. You may have to return it, which sounds like it might be difficult, but if the hardware is bad, it's bad..

This is driving me zanny!! I am using Windows 7 on a Dell desktop computer about 4 years old. Every working fine except I keep getting a pop-up on my computer saying update.exe 0x752de5a8 failed. I haven't a clue what update.exe 0x752de5a8 is - other than Google saying it is NOT Windows related and that it could be a virus. I am using Avira Antivirus Pro and it does not detect anything. Further reading indicated it could be a hidden file in the C:\Program Files\Common files - which I could not find. I have been trying to kill this popup for last 2 weeks - but it is very persistent. Any help would be VERY MUCH appreciated!!!

You are infected and have a log posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.

Hello. I have automatic updates turned on, but noticed nothing was installing, so I went to Microsoft.com and tried manually. Here are the updates (critical) that are outstanding:

Security Update for Windows XP (KB890046)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB896428)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB893066)
Update for Windows XP (KB898461)
Security Update for JView Profiler (KB903235)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2005 (KB890830)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB901214)

I don't know why it will not let me install these. I tried disabling my pop up blocker, but no success, then I tried disabling my Symantec Antivirus and installing, which did not work either. If there is not enough info to go off of here, please tell me what else you need to know. Could firewalls be a problem here? Thanks in advance.

A:Why update failure win 7?

Do you know what update it is installing? If it is still the same after a few more hours then shut down by holding the power button for about 5 seconds. Unplug the domestic power and remove the main battery if it is a laptop. Next discharge the motherboard components by holding the Power Off/On button for at least 20 seconds. This sometimes unsticks things.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I just formatted a hard drive with XP home and updated with service pack 3 and .NET framework from the installation CD. Now the thing will download updates but fails on any of them - express, custom, necessary, software, and hardware. I was just browsing around the manage options on right clicking my computer on start menu. I see this anonymous logon entry every so often. If someone has the IP address can they hack into the machine by altering some kernel file in the system folder? If not, what if they also had the MAC address of the ethernet adapter on the board? Can you hide the computers MAC address behind the address of a wireless router?

Not 100% sure and I'm not a professional, but I'd suggest trying this utility:

Hi, all. I have been having problems with BSOD for quite some time now and my Windows 7 Ultimate hasn't updated for months. I have no idea what is causing these problems, and I am certainly no expert with computers.
I posted my drama on another Windows7 forum but had no takers.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
In anticipation!! binnsy.

Hi. I am trying to update my BIOS using download SP75637, but the update always fails.  I download the file and launch it and it tells me the process completed successfully, but when I restart the PC via the update process, the update fails.  The system states that there is a missing BIN file.  It also states that the file should be located in" C:\Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\New", but the update process doesn't even create this folder.  What is the problem? BTW, I am a retired IT professional and have perfomed BIOS/SW updates for 20+ years.  Why dosen't the update process create the necessary folders? TIA...JL

A:BIOS Update Failure

I have had a similar problem with this BIOS update this morning as well.  In my case, the update causes the system to reboot in an endless loop. HP Support -- Please, please pull this BIOS update and fix it before more users have this problem!  Thank you!!

Attempts to update result in continuous 'Checking for Updates' together with CPU use of 50 to 100% and very high memory use. I have to stop this endless service (wuauserv) with Task Manager. I've seen this failure all over the internet and tried all the MSoft 'Fixit's and other remedies I could find ... all with no success.

So I guess this is my last effort before I say goodbye to this PC.

Anyway, I tried to follow the instructions for posting this thread. Here are my results

1. SURT loaded up (and ran?) to 90% then stalled (yes, I waited for an hour)
2. SFC ran and found corrupt files that it couldn't fix. I cannot attach the resulting log zip file because it exceeds the forums upload limit of 8Mb (my CAB zip file is 10 Mb)
3. During a couple of my fix attempts, somewhere (MalwareBytes?)the following error message appeared: Windows Error Not Fixed: 0x80070005 (2015-11-07T-10_31_06A)
4. My 10 Mb CBS zip file is too large to upload (see #2 above) Might there be some way around this limit?

Other than Windows Update stalling, this PC runs normally.

Thanks in advance for anything you can do to solve this very time consuming Windows Update failure.

I am running Win 7 Home 64 bit and have encountered windows update issues. All suggested fixes have failed to resolve the problem so I tired to run system restore back to a date that I believed would restore the pc to a time when windows update was functional.
The restore also failed with the following window popups appearing: "Unspecified error during system restore 0xc0000022". The other popup tells me that "the program can't start because rtl120.bpl is missing. Try reinstalling the program to fix the problem". I don't know of the two error messages are related or the missing file mentioned relates to something else?
Any suggestions or guidance would be appreciated.
Frank

Unless you really want to stick with W7, I'd suggest you upgrade to W10 Free in the next 3 days, before the MS offer expires. It will be better in the long run and make maintenance easier.

Hello, I have an ENVY 17-J006ED Notebook; Bought in december 2014. On the HP website there was the advice to update the BIOS. I downloaded file SP76843.exe. I run the app directly from Windows; so I did not create an USB-drive. I had the idea that the update went well. The computer restarted, but I got a black screen. Some times the light of the Caps Lock key blinks two times. In this forum I found the following solution: So what I did was I formatted a USB as fat32 and named it HP_TOOLS and downloaded latest bios installation exe file. Drag the .fd file you want to the download exe file. Click next and there will be 3 options. Select the one with install to USB device (removeable media) the continue with it. It will create subfolders and insert the bios file in right place. It will be converted to a different format (bios file will be decrypted). The mentioned steps were done by a different computer. Take battery out of the corrupted laptop and hold down power button for 10 or more seconds. This will reset any active voltages. Don't replace the battery but plug the USB in and plug it in to the power. Now hold down Windows key and 'B' key together and the power button. Keep holding the three buttons until the CAPS lock led blinks once. Release power button and keep holding Windows + B keys together until CAPS lock led starts blinking consistently. Wait few seconds and it will automatically bootup via USB into bios recovery screen. I fol... Read more

Today I went to the page for my Envy to get updated drivers for the network.  While there, I saw a bios update dated 8-3-16  (today)   and went ahead and installed it.  It said in a box that it had to restart my laptop and that was the last time my laptop worked.  I now have a black screen and the cap lock key flashes twice and then pauses and then flashes twice.  Over and over. The system doesn't recognize HD, DVD nor USB drives. Is there anyway to bring this system back?

Hi, Please try again and do NOT select all of them at the same time, just do one by one. I think HP team needs to work a bit harder to get the download manager within HPSA getting better. Regards.

The Automatic troubleshooter indicates there are 2 errors it can't fix.
